More time should be devoted to doing the right thing from day one – Economist tells NDC

Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and Economist, Godfred Bokpin has advised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to promptly address key issues if they emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.

He emphasized the need for a reduction in the size of the government and a limitation on the number of ministers to 40 as one of the primary actions to be taken.

Mr Bokpin highlighted the urgency of addressing pressing national issues promptly upon assuming power.

“Some time can be devoted to reviewing the past. Yes, we will do that but more time should be devoted to doing the right thing from day one. There cannot be any longer honeymoon.”

On JoyNews’ AM Show, Godfred Bokpin expressed that given former President John Mahama’s previous experience as president, he should be capable of implementing changes and improvements swiftly.

He cautioned against blaming the current government for the country’s problems, as it could lead to disaffection among the people.

“So we will need to court both the opposition and then your own people along a certain path. Without that, you may not be able to carry through the structural reforms, which will be very painful. There will be too much division.”

He added that, the development of Ghana should be a unifying force, rather than something that divides the people

“Development must be about people, preserve our planet earth and peace. So the development that divides Ghanaians is not development. We want development that brings Ghanaians together as one people regardless of our tribal affiliations.”

‘Honeymoon period’ for next govt will be dependent on tight expenditure – UTAG-UG

Labor unions have expressed their commitment to offering support and flexibility to the next government, provided that the political party aligns its expenditures with available resources and avoids unnecessary spending.

The unions stand for responsible fiscal management and financial prudence.

This stance comes in response to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, who has requested a “honeymoon” period from Ghanaians, especially trade and labor groups, should his party regain power.

Mahama emphasized the importance of time to revive the economy before addressing specific demands.

Following former President John Mahama’s appeal for a “honeymoon” period, the President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) – University of Ghana Chapter, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has indicated that the association would only contemplate granting such a period if Mahama demonstrates a genuine commitment to tightening government expenses.

It is his hope that the next government “wouldn’t be seen or be heard talking, telling labour to tighten their belt while you and your appointees will be living in opulence, as we keep seeing now.”

“So what is going to be the size of the government? Are they going to be selling vehicles that may be bequeathed to them by the current administration? I mean, if some of these things are done, we will not get the support from labour,” he added.

Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the spokesperson for John Mahama, has assured that the former President is prepared to exercise control over government expenditure if he receives the support.

‘The economy is broke’ – Mahama backs down from making further promises

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized a measured approach in making promises ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Mahama acknowledged that the existing economic conditions impose constraints on his ability to put forward extravagant commitments.

These remarks were delivered during his address to NDC supporters in Hohoe, situated in the Volta Region. He was ay Hohoe to climax his two-day tour dubbed “Building the Ghana we want together”.

“…I am being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crisis in which this country has been plunged [into]. We will show you the books and finances of this country, and you will realise the harm that the New Patriotic Party administration has done this country, the economy is broke.”

Additionally, he announced that, if elected, the next NDC government would institute a policy to provide monthly allowances of GH¢1,000 to all Assembly members.

Mahama estimated that the implementation of this allowance program would amount to GH¢80 million annually for the nation.

He added: “The office of the President’s budget alone is more than GH¢2 billion. We are going to reduce the President’s office expenditure to pay the Assembly members.”

The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized his cautious approach to promises in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, citing the current economic challenges as a limiting factor for grand commitments.

Speaking to NDC supporters in Hohoe, Volta Region, Mahama stated, “…I am being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crisis in which this country has been plunged [into]. We will show you the books and finances of this country, and you will realize the harm that the New Patriotic Party administration has done to this country; the economy is broke.”

Mahama also revealed that the next NDC government, if elected, would institute a monthly allowance of GH¢1,000 for all Assembly members. He estimated that this initiative would incur an annual cost of GH¢80 million.

Additionally, he pledged to reduce the budget of the President’s office, currently exceeding GH¢2 billion, to fund the proposed allowances for Assembly members. The announcement came during Mahama’s two-day “Building the Ghana we want together” tour in the Volta Region.

  • Bright Simons validates Mahama’s allegations of cheating in WASSCE with figures

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons
seems to have supported the assertion made by former President John Dramani Mahama regarding an increase in examination malpractices in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) under the current government.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Mahama, faced criticism, particularly from supporters of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, after expressing concerns about the credibility of the 2023 WASSCE results. His concerns stemmed from the significant number of passes recorded.

Mahama raised issues related to lax invigilation and teacher involvement in student cheating, warning about potential consequences for the country’s educational system. The comments received attention and were met with criticism from some quarters of the public.

“In many places, they let the children cheat. You go to places, and the teachers are conniving with the students to cheat. The effect will be seen later,” Mahama said.

Bright Simons has presented data to support the claim that examination malpractice has risen under the current administration.

In a post on X dated January 4, 2024, Simons shared statistics indicating an increase in the percentage of cancelled West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers during the current government’s tenure.

According to the figures provided, less than 0.2% of WASSCE papers were cancelled in 2014. However, in 2023, over 0.8% of WASSCE papers were cancelled.

Simons highlighted that this represents approximately a 600% increase in paper cancellations attributed to cheating during WASSCE examinations.

“On whether exam cheating is worsening in Ghana, why aren’t education stakeholders simply plotting the trends like they do in Nigeria (see attached)?

“We know that cancellations for malpractice in Ghana have increased from 0.13% of results in 2014 to 0.81% in 2023 (600% increase),” he wrote.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made a commitment to provide an additional Eid holiday for Muslims in Ghana if elected in 2024.

Expressing concern about some Muslims missing out on the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to the 29 or 30-day rule for moon sightings, Mr. Mahama addressed this issue during the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi on Friday, December 29.

He emphasized the intention to address this concern without negatively impacting productivity. Mr. Mahama outlined his plan to modify the Public Holidays Act, ensuring that the same number of public holidays is maintained in Ghana while introducing an extra holiday for the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.

“We aim to address the issue where some of our Muslim community members are unable to enjoy the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to the 29 or 30-day rule for sighting the moon.”

“To do this, we will introduce an additional holiday to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. We will, however, ensure that this does not affect productivity by modifying the Public Holidays Act so that Ghana continues to have the same number of public holidays per year.”

You have no plan for the future of this country – NPP tells Mahama over WASSCE results brouhaha

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, following his comments on the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) results.

During his country tour, Mr. Mahama discredited the examination results, pointing to malpractices and students conniving with teachers to cheat.

In response to the former president, the NPP Deputy Youth Organizer, Sandra Sarkodee-Addo, criticized Mr. Mahama for failing to appreciate the achievements of the candidates.

She urged the former president, “To credit the Ghanaian youth with some considerable amount of intelligence when given the platform to speak. He is at least a former president and a considered statesman, and must live with respect to his office. In 2024, John Mahama must be a changed man, devoid of antics in attempt to trick Ghanaians into believing he has anything new to offer the country.”

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in a Facebook post, also responded to the issue and offered words of encouragement to students, particularly the 2023 WASSCE candidates, urging them not to let anyone diminish their achievements.

In his post, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that not everyone comprehends the challenges faced by intelligent students, praising their accomplishments as a result of hard work.

“We will introduce an additional holiday to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr” – Mahama pledges

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged to grant the Muslims in Ghana an additional Eid holiday if elected in 2024.

He expressed concern about some Muslims missing out on the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to the 29 or 30-day rule for moon sightings.

Mr. Mahama, addressing the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi on Friday, December 29, stated that he would ensure this adjustment doesn’t adversely affect productivity.

He emphasized the intention to modify the Public Holidays Act to maintain the same number of public holidays per year in Ghana.

This comes after the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, introduced a new bill aiming to amend the country’s Public Holidays Act 2001, Act 601.

The proposed amendment includes the addition of two Islamic public holidays, Tashreeq (a day after the Eid-al-Adha Festival) and Shaqq (a day before the Eid-al-Fitr).

The bill was submitted to the Clerk of Parliament on November 29, 2023, and is currently in the processing stage.

According to Sosu, the amendment aims to create a more progressive, productive, and inclusive society by extending the public holidays for Muslims from one day to two days for each Islamic festivity.

“The right of every Ghanaian to freedom of religion is a fundamental one. In Article 21(c) every Ghanian has the freedom to practice any religion and to manifest any religion. Being the 2nd dominant religion in Ghana, Ghanaian Muslims must have equal opportunities when it comes to the celebration of religious festivals.”

“After 40 days of mandatory religious obligation of fasting, practitioners of Islamic Religion deserve an additional day for rest and to prepare for full activities,” he said.

“The religious significance of these holidays is to afford Muslims the opportunity to fully manifest and observe their faith, and offer gratitude to Allah for all that He has done, granted them, and continues to do; as well as for them to fully place and restore their trust in Allah and His abundant care, Grace and wisdom,” he added.

Your efforts to underplay 2023 WASSCE results is uncalled for – Oppong-Nkrumah tells Mahama

Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has expressed profound disappointment over former President, John Dramani Mahama’s recent remarks, which downplayed the success of the Free SHS program.

Addressing journalists during the Christmas festivities in Akim Anyinase, Minister Oppong-Nkrumah criticized Mahama for undermining the accomplishments of SHS graduates.

“It is disheartening to observe how Former President Mahama will go all lengths to belittle the Free SHS program and its results simply because it didn’t emanate from him,” stated Minister Oppong Nkrumah.

The recently released 2023 WASSCE results, considered the best since 2015, have been attributed to the positive impact of the Free SHS policy. However, former President Mahama, during his country tour, discredited the outcome of the examination pointing to malpractices and students conniving with teachers to cheat.

Reacting to Mr. Mahama’s claims, the Ofoase Ayirebi legislator found his accusations of malpractices and cheating “shocking and disappointing,” emphasizing that such remarks disregard the hard work and accomplishments of the students who benefited from the initiative.

“While he may not like the entire SHS program, he shouldn’t try so hard to denigrate the beneficiaries. Yes, the program may have some challenges, but to say that even the exceptional success of the students is fake is just amazing,” the Minister added.

Minister Oppong Nkrumah recounted the stiff opposition from Mahama and the NDC to the Free SHS programme, emphasizing that the former President’s comments are a continuation of that stance.

This, he urged constructive discussions to improve the Free SHS initiative and enhance the education sector, emphasizing that Ghana would be better served with ideas rather than attempts to undermine the efforts and achievements of the beneficiaries.

Every examination is different every year – NAGRAT reacts Free SHS-WASSCE brouhaha

President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has refuted former President John Mahama’s recent allegations of widespread cheating among senior high school graduates.

Mr Carbonu emphasized the uniqueness of each examination, stating that “no two examinations can be the same.”

Former President Mahama had expressed concerns about the authenticity of the recent West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, pointing to the high pass rates.

He alleged instances of invigilators and teachers aiding students in cheating, cautioning about potential consequences for the country’s educational system.

In response, Carbonu challenged Mahama to provide statistical evidence supporting his claims, suggesting that there might be information not known to the public.

“The information the former President has will help all of us to resolve the matter,” he added.

Angel Carbonu clarified that it is incorrect to make sweeping statements about teachers’ performance, stating that not every teacher engages in cheating.

While acknowledging that there have been instances where a few teachers were implicated in cheating, he emphasized that this does not reflect the broader teaching community.

The NAGRAT President urged politicians to refrain from meddling in the country’s education system and instead focus on addressing the challenges confronting teachers.

“We beg you politicians, stop playing political football with our exams. Let us maintain our standards. Every examination is different every year” he stated.

Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has conveyed profound disappointment with former President John Dramani Mahama’s recent remarks that downplayed the success of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, deeming them “woefully disheartening.”

Addressing journalists during the Christmas festivities in Akim Anyinase, Minister Oppong-Nkrumah criticized Mahama for his attempt to undermine the accomplishments of SHS graduates.

“It is disheartening to observe how Former President Mahama will go all lengths to belittle the Free SHS programme and its results simply because it didn’t emanate from him,” stated Minister Oppong-Nkrumah.

The recently disclosed 2023 WASSCE results, lauded as the best since 2015, are being credited to the positive influence of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

However, former President Mahama, during his country tour, cast doubt on the integrity of the examination results, citing malpractices and alleging collusion between students and teachers to cheat.

In response to Mr. Mahama’s assertions, the legislator for Ofoase Ayirebi expressed shock and disappointment at the accusations of malpractices and cheating.

The legislator emphasized that such comments undermine the hard work and achievements of the students who have benefited from the Free SHS initiative.

“While he may not like the entire SHS program, he shouldn’t try so hard to denigrate the beneficiaries. Yes, the program may have some challenges, but to say that even the exceptional success of the students is fake is just amazing,” the Minister added.

Minister Oppong-Nkrumah recalled the strong opposition from Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, highlighting that the recent comments from the former President are a continuation of that stance.

He urged for constructive discussions aimed at improving the Free SHS initiative and enhancing the education sector. Minister Oppong-Nkrumah emphasized that Ghana would benefit more from collaborative ideas rather than attempts to undermine the efforts and achievements of the beneficiaries of the Free SHS policy.

Quality of education hasn’t been compromised – MoE tells Mahama

The Ministry of Education has criticized former President John Dramani Mahama for his recent remarks concerning the 2023 WASSCE results.

The NDC Presidential candidate had cast doubt on the authenticity of the results, alleging that some invigilators were lenient, allowing teachers to assist students in answering questions.

In response to these claims, the Ministry of Education asserted that the disparaging remarks were a deliberate effort to undermine the significant progress achieved by the ministry in enhancing learning outcomes in the country.

According to a press statement seen by JoyNews, the MoE highlighted substantial advancements in core subjects, citing an increase in the average score from 40.93 percent (A1 – C6) in 2015 to an impressive 69.73 percent (A1 – C6) in 2023.

Furthermore, the MoE emphasized that Ghana had achieved its highest-ever 8A1s in both 2020 and 2023, contributing 411 out of the 465 8A1s recorded across West Africa in the latter year.

The ministry denounced the former President’s assertion as a false representation of the facts, aiming to unfairly tarnish “the integrity of the vast majority of our hard-working teachers and students.”

Calling on all well-meaning Ghanaians to condemn the former President’s statement, the Ministry affirmed its dedication to maintaining the highest quality of education in the country.

“The Ministry reiterates our commitment that the quality of education and examinations at all levels, including the WASSCE, will not be compromised,” the statement concluded.

He extended commendation to students from various schools, including those from lesser-known institutions, who achieved impressive aggregate scores.

In a Thursday Facebook post, Dr. Bawumia expresses appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the students and their teachers, acknowledging that their outstanding performance is a testament to their commitment.

He emphasized that their achievements have made Ghana proud and extends his best wishes as they face future challenges.

It’s noteworthy that Dr. Bawumia’s message sharply contrasts with former President John Mahama’s perspective during his campaign tour.

Mahama suggested that the students’ success was a result of collusion between teachers and students to cheat.

Mahama will mess Ghana up if he becomes a president – Carlos Ahenkorah

Member of Parliament for Tema West, Hon. Carlos Ahenkorah, has argued that granting John Dramani Mahama a second term would be detrimental to Ghana’s growth.

He emphasizes that recalling Mahama’s first term, marked by mismanagement, should serve as a reminder that he has nothing new or better to offer.

Mr Ahenkorah asserted, “John Mahama has nothing to lose, and such a person cannot be made president. He has only one term and therefore will not be considerate in his decision-making, among other things. He will mess the country up because he will not be up for any form of election.

Contrastingly, he praises Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, highlighting that Bawumia, having more to prove and lose, would make prudent decisions beneficial for Ghana’s development.

Mr Ahenkorah contends that Bawumia’s awareness of facing another election incentivizes him to prioritize decisions that align with the country’s progress.

Addressing claims of mismanagement by the NPP in the country’s economy, Ahenkorah contends that the economy was thriving until unforeseen crises impacted it. He suggests that Ghana would have been in optimal condition if not for these crises.

  • Ghana will lose cocoa production position to Ecuador if NDC doesn’t come to power – Mahama

Ghana will lose cocoa production position to Ecuador if NDC doesn’t come to power – Mahama

Expressing concerns about Ghana potentially losing its standing as the world’s second-largest cocoa producer to Ecuador, former President John Dramani Mahama attributes the decline in cocoa production to what he perceives as detrimental policies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Mahama points to Ghana’s cocoa production of 960,000 metric tonnes in 2016, contending that policies implemented by the NPP have negatively impacted the industry.

Specifically, he highlights the discontinuation of free fertilizer provision to farmers, resulting in increased challenges such as pest infestations and a subsequent decline in productivity.

On December 22, 2023, at a durbar in Nyankumasi Ahenkro, in the Assin South district of the Central region, the former President expressed apprehension about Ghana’s diminishing cocoa production compared to the rising output in Ecuador.

In his role as the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama urged residents to support the NDC’s bid for power, emphasizing the importance of reinstating the free fertilizer policy to boost cocoa yields.

Mahama warned of the possibility that Ecuador could surpass Ghana as the second-largest cocoa producer without intervention.

He stated, “The cocoa sector is collapsing because the trees are dying since there is no fertilizer to apply. There is a country called Ecuador who were nowhere near our production capacity, but they are now producing over 300,000 to almost 400,000 tonnes, and Ghana has been dropping consistently.

“If the NDC doesn’t come to save our cocoa from collapsing, Ecuador will overtake us as the second-largest producer,” Mahama stated as he addressed residents in Twi during his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Central region.

Delivering these remarks in Twi during his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Central region, Mahama used the platform to gather ideas for the NDC’s People’s Manifesto for the 2024 elections.

  • We will return to providing free fertilizers to farmers – Mahama pledges

We will return to providing free fertilizers to farmers – Mahama pledges

Former President John Dramani Mahama concluded his two-day tour of the Central region with a commitment to revive growth in agriculture, particularly in the cocoa sector.

Addressing concerns raised by farmers at separate durbars, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer emphasized the crucial role played by the cocoa sector in Ghana’s economy.

He expressed disappointment in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s policies, stating that they had jeopardized the once thriving cocoa industry.

Mahama highlighted the positive impact of the NDC government’s policies, such as the supply of free fertilizer, seedlings, and inputs to cocoa farmers, leading to an increase in the annual crop yield. However, he lamented that policy changes by the current government had significantly affected the national cocoa yield, putting the industry at risk of collapse.

“When we started giving out free fertilizers, it was because we realised it would help improve yield, and in the 2016/17 crop year, we recorded a massive increase in produce.

“I cannot understand why this government will decide to stop that and sell the fertilizers to the farmers… It is wickedness to leave the fertilizer in warehouses because the farmers cannot buy them,” he indicated.

Mr. Mahama pledged to strengthen the country’s cocoa sector through carefully planned policy interventions aimed at enhancing the cocoa value chain, which is crucial for the country’s economic recovery.

The initiative aims not only to increase the income of cocoa farmers but also to create employment opportunities and foster economic development in the regions associated with cocoa cultivation.

As well, Mr Mahama said the fisheries sub-sector had encountered depressing outputs for some time now, ”resulting in very high deficits in national fish supply, relative to demand and consumption requirements”.

Former President Mahama highlighted significant concerns in the fishing industry, including inadequate infrastructure for the development of the post-harvest sub-sector, unsafe and unhygienic landing beaches, and the prevalence of illegal fishing methods and activities.

He asserted that the NDC government’s construction of a processing plant aimed to address these issues by reducing post-harvest losses, adding value to the fish catch, and optimizing the nation’s benefits from the fishing industry.

Regarding premix fuel, Mr. Mahama accused the government of undermining the efforts of artisanal fishers and contributing to the challenges they face in the industry.

“When we were in power, we set up the landing beach committee, and at that time, anyone could be a member. The premix was distributed judiciously.

“But now, fuel diversion and mismanagement of the distribution of premix fuel appear to have reached its peak. The NPP government is politicising the distribution,” he criticised.

Mr Mahama on Friday began a two-day campaign tour of the Central Region dubbed: “Building Ghana”.

He interacted with traditional authorities, supporters, and interest groups across the Region.

  • NDC govt will revoke Akufo-Addo’s GHC100 emission tax – Asuogyaman MP

NDC govt will revoke Akufo-Addo’s GHC100 emission tax – Asuogyaman MP

The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has announced that the upcoming NDC government, John Mahama, intends to eliminate the GHC100 yearly emission tax introduced by the current Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administration.

Nyarko revealed that despite the minority caucus’s attempt to block the tax, the majority’s numerical advantage allowed its passage.

Addressing commercial motorcyclists in Fintey, Osiabura, and Asikuma after providing free fuel for Christmas, Nyarko criticized the tax as insensitive and obnoxious.

He assured that President Mahama and the NDC would eliminate the GHC100 tax on petrol and diesel engines, including motorbikes.

The MP highlighted the expected positive impact on living standards through the implementation of a 24-hour economy by the next NDC government, scheduled to begin in 2025.

The recently passed Emissions Levy Bill imposes a GHC100 annual fee on petrol and diesel vehicle owners starting January 2024. The aim is to promote eco-friendly energy sources and offset carbon emissions.

The tax faced opposition from the Minority in Parliament, who labeled it a ‘wusie tax’ that could worsen citizens’ economic challenges.

While the government emphasizes climate-positive actions, the move has sparked debates over its potential impact on various sectors, including commercial vehicles, private vehicles, ambulances, ‘okadas,’ and ‘aboboyaas.’

If the bill receives presidential assent, companies will also be required to pay GH₵100 per tonne of carbon dioxide emission.

The tax initiative aligns with broader environmental goals, as evidenced by the government’s decision to apply a zero-VAT rate on imported electric vehicles in the 2024 budget.

Finance Minister Ofori-Atta previously outlined plans to expand the Environmental Excise Duty to cover plastic packaging, industrial emissions, and vehicle emissions, showcasing a comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship.

Mahama deployed 10 helicopters to Ada in search of Castro – Asamoah Gyan

Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, Asamoah Gyan, has praised former President John Dramani Mahama for his efforts in the search for the late Ghanaian musician Castro, who went missing in 2014.

Nine years ago, Gyan, Castro, and other friends visited Ada for recreation, but a tragic incident occurred. Castro and his girlfriend, Jennifer Bandu, mysteriously disappeared on the Ada River while jet skiing.

As news of Castro’s disappearance gripped the nation on July 6, 2014, Gyan and his friends mobilized efforts to rescue the late musician.

Recalling a poignant moment, Gyan mentioned that former President John Dramani Mahama dispatched helicopters to Ada to assist in the search for Castro.

“One thing I remember during 2014 when my friend’s incident happened. I called him on the phone and he asked me what he could do to help and I told him anything he could do,” Asamoah Gyan noted.

He added, “I remember within less than an hour there were like 10 helicopters at Ada.”

“He was the seating president who normally talks to me on the phone when he was in power and I always appreciate what he did for me when he was in power.”

“He was the sitting president who normally talked to me on the phone when he was in power, and I always appreciate what he did for me when he was in power,”the former Black Stars striker said.

  • You certify their WASSCE results yet are told outside they aren’t up to standards – Mahama to govt

You certify their WASSCE results yet are told outside they aren’t up to standards – Mahama to govt

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has raised concerns about the authenticity of the recent West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

He challenged the integrity of the examination process, alleging that some invigilators relax on the job and that teachers are assisting students in answering questions.

“In many places, they let the children cheat. You go to places and the teachers are conniving with the students to cheat. The effect will be seen later,” Mr. Mahama said.

This statement from Mr Mahama follows the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s announcement that this year’s WASSCE results are the best since 2015.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is currently on the “Building Ghana Tour,” has expressed that such laxity in the examination process could have detrimental effects on the country’s educational system in the future.

“You certify these children saying they are of this standard either the BECE or SSCE, and that child will use that certificate, go abroad to a school and they will find out that your qualification is not up to the standard you say it is”.

As part of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) efforts to gather input for its manifesto, various professional and economic groups have been invited to share challenges within their sectors.

Teachers have been a prominent group in these consultations. In the Mfantseman Constituency, concerns were raised about the non-availability of textbooks following a change in the curriculum.

  • Twifo Traditional Area Queen mothers endorse Mahama ahead of 2024 elections

Twifo Traditional Area Queen mothers endorse Mahama ahead of 2024 elections

Queen mothers in the Twifo Traditional Area, located in the Central Region of Ghana, have expressed their support for John Mahama’s bid for another term in the presidency.

Speaking on behalf of the queen mothers, Nana Abena Antwiwaa stated that they trust the ability of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer to restore the economy.

The queen mother believes that the NDC, under John Mahama’s leadership, will be able to counter the agenda of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to “break the eight,” referring to the tradition of alternating political power every eight years.

“We the queen mothers of the Twifo Traditional Area which I lead have declared support for you. We know the NDC will prevent them from winning another term. They have done their eight years so the NDC will return to power,” she assured the NDC flagbearer.

Nana Abena Antwiwaa, speaking on behalf of other queen mothers in the Twifo Traditional Area, expressed their readiness to campaign for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This declaration of support came during the “Building Ghana Tour” of former President John Dramani Mahama. The traditional leaders, including the Omanhene of Twifo, Obrempong Appiah Nuamah II, were present for an interaction with the NDC flagbearer.

The Omanhene emphasized the importance of voting based on developmental issues in ensuring the country’s progress.

“A lot of the people here vote for the NDC. When it gets to a time when things are not going as expected, there is a need for change. Even if it is moving well, elections must be conducted. We have all seen how things are going. People leave leadership roles and are brought back because of their good work. We are not surprised that the former President is seeking a return. We pray it is successful,” he said.

Meanwhile, the former President showed appreciation at the warm reception, and indicated the NDC is looking forward to the opportunity to turn around the fortunes of the country.

“The defeat in 2016 has helped me plan for a better Ghana. I have developed new ideas that will be implemented if God grants me another term. I know it will be a difficult task because the economy is in poor shape so I will not make any huge promise but restoring the economy will be a priority,” he added.

  • Akufo-Addo will govern for another 4 years if you don’t vote for me – Mahama

Akufo-Addo will govern for another 4 years if you don’t vote for me – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed the view that voting for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024 would essentially be an extension of President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

Mahama believes that if the NPP is retained, the country would face additional economic challenges and crises.

“Whoever votes the NPP in the next election is giving the President another four years”, he said.

During his address at Jukwa as part of the “Building Ghana Tour” in the Central Region, John Dramani Mahama voiced concerns about the country’s escalating debt, which has reached 600 billion cedis from 120 billion in 2016.

Mahama attributed the situation to President Akufo-Addo’s decision not to replace the Finance Minister, placing blame on this choice for the increasing debt stock.

“I can’t understand why the President has refused to remove his brother from the Finance Ministry. He has refused to listen to everyone. Eighty NPP MPs signed a petition for removal of the Finance Minister but the President refused”, he told the people.

The former President continued; “You can’t understand why the same person is being kept at the ministry. The President himself has lost hope. He told journalists the President after him should restore the economy in an interview on the economy.”

In the address, the former President who’s seeking a comeback described himself as akin to the Biblical saviour.

“The Bible talks about a saviour to redeem us. I am a Christian and believe Jesus Christ is the one. But before the coming of Jesus Christ, a saviour will be sent to redeem Ghana. That person will be experienced enough for the task. That individual is John Dramani Mahama and the NDC”, he said.

The first day of the “Building Ghana Tour” in the Central Region was climaxed with a community engagement at Jukwa in Heman Lower Denkyira.

Prior to that, the NDC flagbearer made stops at the Twifo Nursing Training College, Fante Nyankomase among other places to engage the people and traditional authorities.

Akufo-Addo has made Free SHS expensive although it is a good policy – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has recognized the merit of President Akufo-Addo’s flagship program, the Free Senior High School Programme (Free SHS).

During his visit to Agona Asafo in the Central Region as part of his Building Ghana Tour, Mahama expressed the view that the policy is a positive one. However, he indicated that there is a need for a review of the Free SHS program.

Mahama mentioned that if elected in the 2024 general elections, his administration would undertake a review of the Free SHS policy within the first 100 days of taking office.

“When we win power in 2024, we will have a forum to review the education sector, and we will invite teachers, parents, educationists and students and then we will review the free SHS policy.

“We will address issues that are not going well, like the feeding of students. The free SHS is a good policy but the government must put in place measures that will ensure that things are less expensive,” he said.

Mahama emphasised the need for a review, stating, “When you implement a policy, you must take stock after a while to see whether you are achieving your target.”

The NDC flagbearer underscored the objective of enhancing the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

Emphasizing the need for improvement, the goal is to ensure that teachers, parents, and students can fully realize the benefits of the policy.

  • Corruption has broken loose, Ghanaians are now tired of you – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

Corruption has broken loose, Ghanaians are now tired of you – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

In a recent address, former President John Mahama strongly criticized the Akufo-Addo administration, alleging that it has led Ghana into a state of rampant corruption.

Speaking during an end-of-year session with current Members of Parliament and prospective 2024 NDC parliamentary candidates, Mahama asserted that corruption remains a significant obstacle hindering the country’s progress.

He emphasized that attempts to curb corruption have proven ineffective and, instead, the issue has worsened over time. Mahama underscored the urgent need for decisive action to address the pervasive problem and its detrimental impact on Ghana’s development.

“Currently, corruption has broken loose and it is running riot all over the country. Indeed, Ghanaians have developed the syndrome I call scandal fatigue because if you have a scandal every week, you get tired, so everybody is tired of talking about NPP’s corruption.

“Just when you think you have seen the worst of it, they rise to even new levels that you can never imagine. One of those being the recent SML agreement. One wonders how they could have sat and conspired to rip off the nation with such a contract,” he said.

Mr. Mahama’s critique of the Akufo-Addo administration coincides with a robust defense put forth by the President regarding his track record in addressing corruption. During the launch of the assessment of Ghana’s inaugural national anti-corruption action plan, President Akufo-Addo vehemently refuted the label of being a “clearing agent.”

According to President Akufo-Addo, “Every single alleged act of corruption levelled against any of my appointees has been investigated by individual bodies such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and some cases by Parliament.”

“It is not my job to clear or convict a person accused of wrongdoing or of engaging in any acts of wrongdoing. Despite the efforts of some to tag me as a clearing agent.

“That is the job of the courts and the law enforcement agencies. My job is to act on allegations of corruption by referring the issues to the proper investigative agency for the relevant inquiry and action including if necessary the suspension of the affected official pending the conclusion of the investigation, that is exactly what has been done since I assumed the mantle of leadership,”he said.

He noted since he assumed office as President, “no evidence or allegation has been forthcoming that the Executive i.e. myself as President has made any attempt to influence the outcome of any of these investigations. The latest episode involving the former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah is evident for all to see.”

He also said the country has made remarkable progress in the fight against corruption under his administration.

Mahama promises to build an SHS in Kwamankese

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made a commitment to construct a senior high school for the residents of Kwamankese in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese district of the Central region.

The former President announced this pledge during a durbar of Chiefs and People in Kwamankese, held as part of his two-day visit on Friday.

Expressing his concern, Mahama stated that it is unacceptable for Kwamankese to lack a senior high school, and he has vowed to address this gap by initiating the construction of a new educational facility in the area.

“As for this promise, I can make. If the NDC comes to power God willing, you’ll have a secondary school here in Kwamankese. It is not fair and right that you don’t have such a school here. The constituency is called Abura Asebu Kwamankese. In this constituency we have five secondary schools but all them are in the Abura and Asebu, leaving out Kwamankese with no senior high school. I have stated that I will make no more promises, but on this issue, I stand here to promise that when the NDC comes to power you the people of Kwamankese will have a secondary school,” Mahama said.

Mr. Mahama’s two-day tour of the Central Region commenced on Friday, December 22, 2023. The itinerary includes visits to various locations such as Cape Coast, Ayeldo in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency, Nyankomasi Ahenkro in the Assin South Constituency, Twifu Praso Nursing Training College, Jukwa, Mankessim, Agona East, and the Awutu Traditional Council at Awutu Bereku.

The primary objective of this tour is to provide Mr. Mahama with the platform to engage with Ghanaians and elucidate on the importance of introducing the 24-Hour Economy policy should he emerge victorious in the 2024 election.

  • I’ll revive ‘dead’ Komenda Sugar Factory when I return – Mahama

I’ll revive ‘dead’ Komenda Sugar Factory when I return – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed a commitment to revive the Komenda Sugar Factory as part of his industrialization agenda.

He emphasized that the operationalization of the factory has the potential to generate around 7,300 direct and indirect jobs while also contributing to a reduction in sugar imports.

“The factory was rebirthed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and has the master plan to revive it when the party takes over the reins of government in 2025,” he said.

The Presidential candidate of the NDC gave the assurance on Friday when he paid a courtesy call on the Oguaa Traditional Council to begin his two-day working visit to the Central Region.

The Komenda Sugar Factory, located in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region, was commissioned in 2016 but faced operational challenges, leading to its closure.

The $35-million factory, built from an Indian Exim Bank facility, had not worked since its commissioning.

Mahama, while addressing economic issues, asserted that his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is better equipped to manage Ghana’s economy. He attributed the current economic challenges to the mismanagement by the current government, characterizing the state as near collapse.

Mahama outlined a comprehensive 24-hour policy that he plans to implement if given the mandate to lead the country again. The policy aims to stabilize the national currency, enhance reserves, reduce inflation and interest rates, create employment opportunities, improve livelihoods, and boost both import substitution and the export drive.

In addressing corruption, Mahama pledged to create a conducive environment for anti-corruption institutions to effectively combat corrupt practices

  • 10% not enough, we’ll make laws that allow Ghana earn more income from its minerals – Mahama

10% not enough, we’ll make laws that allow Ghana earn more income from its minerals – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has announced that if elected, his government will invest in the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) to explore mineral resource deposits across the country.

The aim is to increase earnings from the country’s mineral deposits, as Mahama believes that the current situation is not in the best interest of Ghana.

Presently, foreign investors often undertake geological surveys and benefit more from successful mining operations.

“When they explore and discover the mineral, they apply for mining lease to mine. Because they are funding it, it is very difficult to spell out the terms,” Mr. Mahama said.

Former President John Dramani Mahama addressed the issue of mineral deposits in Ghana during a Town Hall meeting in Ayeldo-Abura-Asebu Kwamankese in the Central Region.

He highlighted the need for Ghana to benefit more from its mineral resources and emphasized the NDC’s plan to invest in the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to explore and maximize the potential of these deposits for the benefit of the country’s economy.

“What we benefit now is ten percent current interest, three percent royalties and corporate income tax of 35 percent. That is what we get. The foreigners take away the rest,” he said.

After the discovery of lithium in commercial quantities in the Central Region, there has been increased debate on the exploration deal. The Chief of Ayeldo, Okakaben Idun Andoh X, stated that initial geological investigations had confirmed commercial quantities of lithium in the area. The community anticipates improved fortunes from mining the mineral.

However, John Dramani Mahama emphasizes the importance of implementing the right policies to maximize the benefits of such mineral resources for the country.

“We will make laws that will allow the country to make the necessary income. We must make more from the mineral resources than what we are making presently,” he added.

We will protect 2024 election votes, results will reflect your will – Mahama promises electorates

Former President John Mahama has affirmed his commitment to ensuring that the true voice of Ghanaians is accurately represented in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

During an end-of-year gathering at his office in Cantonments on Wednesday, December 20, Mr. Mahama reassured members of his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including national executives, Members of Parliament, and Parliamentary Candidates, of the party’s readiness for the elections.

He underscored the significance of securing and counting every vote to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.

Mr. Mahama expressed his determination by acknowledging the frustration of individuals who voted for him but felt that their votes were not adequately protected.

“We are going to leave no stone unturned. We will make this election a true reflection of the people’s will. We are going to make sure that the people’s votes are protected. I have heard enough of people walking up to me and telling me we voted for you but you did not protect our votes.”

“We are going to protect their votes and make sure that the outcome of the elections will be a reflection of what the people of Ghana want,” he assured.

  • Assembly Members will receive allowances if I become president – Mahama

Assembly Members will receive allowances if I become president – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has affirmed his dedication to remunerate Assembly Members once elected into office.

The former President, who exercised his civic duty by casting his vote at the Bole District Assembly polling station, emphasized the collective responsibility to contribute to the improvement of Ghana’s decentralization system.

In a tweet, Mahama addressed the elected Assembly Members nationwide, urging them to play an active role in refining the decentralization framework.

“I remain committed, when voted as the President of Ghana in 2024, to begin paying allowances to all Assembly Members to help them carry out their duties,” he declared.

The visionary pledge reflects Mahama’s dedication to fostering local development and ensuring that Assembly Members are adequately supported in their responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Eastern Region has raised concerns about the handling of the District Assembly elections by the Electoral Commission (EC).

“I exercised my civic responsibility as a Ghanaian by voting in Tuesday’s district-level elections at the Bole District Assembly polling station.

“Congratulations to all who participated in the exercise. And to our newly elected Assembly Members across the country, let me remind you that we all have a responsibility to contribute and ensure that we get our decentralization right,” Mr. Mahama stated.

He continued: “I remain committed, when voted as the President of Ghana in 2024, to begin paying allowances to all Assembly Members to help them carry out their duties. Together, we shall build our local economies and make them work 24 hours to generate well-paying jobs.”

The NDC’s Eastern Regional Secretary, Jamal Konneh, expressed dissatisfaction, citing information indicating that a significant number of districts in the region might not have conducted their elections as planned.

The party fears that unfavorable decisions by the EC could have a ripple effect on the 2024 elections.

In a press release, Konneh highlighted the disruptive challenges faced during the elections, particularly in the New Juaben South Municipality.

The late arrival of voting materials and subsequent calls off the elections raised frustrations among voters, with many leaving polling stations in disappointment.

The NDC emphasized that such issues should be addressed promptly to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.

“Although this election is not partisan, we are stakeholders in elections, and whatever bad decision the EC takes may have a trickle-down effect on the 2024 elections.

“According to our intel, only 16 districts out of the 33 districts in the Eastern Region may have their elections today. This means that 17 districts or more are not going to have their elections today,” the Eastern regional secretary of the NDC, Jamal Konneh stated in press release.

  • Quota system in nursing training institution will be abolished – Mahama

Quota system in nursing training institution will be abolished – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has indicated that the next NDC-led government plans to abolish the quota system for enrolling student nurses into Nursing Training Colleges in the country.

Instead, the government intends to invest in the construction of more health facilities, including CHPS Compounds, new Polyclinics, Health Centres, and Hospitals. This strategic move aims to create additional job opportunities for nurses upon the completion of their courses.

The announcement was made during Former President Mahama’s address to student nurses at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Esiama, Ellembelle District, Western Region. This engagement was part of a two-day Building Ghana Tour, seeking input from stakeholders to be incorporated into the NDC’s new manifesto.

The students who received President Mahama, hoisted placards such as, “Mahama, You Deserve Our Votes In 2024”, “The Youth of Ghana Support The-24-Hour Economy”, “We Are Sorry for Choosing Allowances over Hospitals”, “Graduate Nurses Are Crying”, “Our Entire Educational System Is In Comatose” and “JM, We Love You”.

Former President John Dramani Mahama highlighted that the decision by the previous NDC government to replace training allowances with the Students Loan Scheme was made to address challenges in the health sector. He mentioned that second-year student nurses have not received their allowances and appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia to promptly disburse the allowances.

Mahama expressed concern about the increasing brain drain in the health sector due to unemployment and pledged to create more jobs to alleviate the issue.

During his visit to the Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Esiama, he directed the MP for Ellembelle to provide a new water pump for the college and promised to address challenges facing the institution.

The MP for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, assured that he would engage with student nurses to address their concerns.

The college’s Principal, Mrs. Cecilia Boame, emphasized the need for a new 60-seater bus to transport students for clinical services, citing the inadequacy of the current bus donated by the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

The SRC President of the college, Ms. Humaizer Abubakar, commended former President Mahama for his past interventions in the health sector and expressed optimism about his commitment to spearheading Ghana’s development if elected again.

  • Mahama pledges to review DACF rate from 5% to 7%

Mahama pledges to review DACF rate from 5% to 7%

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to raise the district assembly common fund from the current 5% to 7% if he emerges victorious in the 2024 elections.

The presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress made this promise in Bole after casting his vote in the district assembly elections, emphasizing that it is part of the measures his government will implement to enhance local governance.

“If God smiles on us, and we win the 2024 elections, we are going to take decentralization seriously, the rest of the ministries seriously, and the rest of the MMDAs that are still centralized. We are going to complete the decentralization so that we truly hand over power to the people at the local government level. Until we get our decentralization right, Ghana is not going to go anywhere, and so we are going to take it seriously.”

“We are going to make sure that District Common Fund disbursement increases from 5% to 7%, as enforced in 2016, and that the District Assemblies Common Fund is going to be regular so that districts can take advantage of it to increase the pace of their development. So, for those who haven’t voted, please go to the polling stations and select your assembly members,” Mr. Mahama said.

In addition to his pledge to increase the district assembly common fund, Mr. Mahama urged the Electoral Commission of Ghana to implement measures to prevent issues such as malfunctioning equipment and delayed starts that were observed in the district assembly elections from recurring in the 2024 General elections.

He emphasized that addressing these concerns is crucial to avoid potential chaos during the upcoming national elections.

  • I will introduce a 20% allowance for rural teachers – Mahama

I will introduce a 20% allowance for rural teachers – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made a pledge to introduce a 20% allowance for rural teachers if he is elected back into office.

This proposed basic allowance is intended to incentivize teachers to work in rural areas, addressing the shortage of educators in certain communities.

During a town hall meeting in the Western Region, John Mahama expressed his full commitment to addressing the challenges associated with the successful implementation of this allowance.

In response to concerns raised by teachers from the Ahanta West District, he highlighted the importance of categorizing both rural and urban areas to determine which teachers would be eligible for the allowance.

He acknowledged the complexity of this task, stating, “in Takoradi here, there are some villages within the city. Where will you categorize that? All of these would have to be considered. We will sit with you to address this.”

The former President acknowledged that a significant challenge in implementing the proposed policy lies in accurately categorizing rural communities deserving of the teacher allowance.

Simultaneously, private school owners expressed dissatisfaction, perceiving unfair advantages given to public school examinations.

In response to these concerns, Mr. Mahama expressed his commitment to investigating the issues raised by private school owners and proposing suitable solutions to address the challenges faced by rural areas.

He emphasized that the NDC government is dedicated to conducting a comprehensive review of the free senior high school policy. This review will involve engaging stakeholders such as parents, teachers, educationists, and students to ensure a thorough assessment and potential improvements to the existing educational policies.

“We will have a stakeholder consultation to examine the challenges with the policy and address them. For instance, due to an infrastructure deficit, the school operates on a shift system.

“Currently, some students are at home and will return to school in March. After such a long break, how do they retain what they were taught?” Mahama questioned.

  • Cocoa growing areas to receive processing factories from me – Mahama

Cocoa growing areas to receive processing factories from me – Mahama

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has announced plans for his next government to establish cocoa processing factories in cocoa-growing regions across the country.

This initiative is part of a broader policy aimed at revitalizing what he describes as an ‘ailing’ cocoa industry.

Mr. Mahama envisions that the processing of cocoa beans within these regions will significantly enhance earnings derived from cocoa cultivation.

Emphasizing the potential benefits, he noted, “We want to build factories in cocoa-growing areas. The white man is able to earn more than five times our earnings after processing the cocoa.”

The announcement was made during the final town hall meeting held in the Bia East District of the Western North Region. Throughout these meetings, concerns raised by cocoa farmers in the cocoa-growing areas have been a focal point of discussion.

Cocoa farming, a critical contributor to both employment and the national economy, has faced challenges, including the government’s struggle to secure a syndicated loan of $800 million for the industry.

Mr. Mahama expressed particular worry about the deteriorating performance of the Produce Buying Company (PBC) under the current government.

Reflecting on the historical significance of PBC, Mr. Mahama stated, “From the days of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Produce Buying Company has been working. In my time as President, the company did well. They were making profit. Now, workers have not been paid for six months. It should tell you that the company has collapsed. Others are buying the cocoa beans as I speak but PBC isn’t able to buy”.

“When we were in power, PBC was buying it’s own trucks but today the trucks are not working. We will revive the industry” he added.

The proposed policies and initiatives discussed during the tour are expected to be detailed in the NDC’s manifesto for the upcoming 2024 elections.

We will fix what Akufo-Addo broke and make Ghana better for you – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made a commitment to restore economic stability if elected as president.

Expressing confidence in the capable individuals within the NDC, Mahama believes that they can address the economic challenges created by the current government under President Akufo-Addo.

While addressing students at the Sefwi Wiaso Nurses Training College, Mahama emphasized that a future NDC government would strive to establish a solid foundation for the country’s economy.

“I met some drivers, and they apologized to me for voting me out. A gallon of petrol during my time was GH¢14, but now it’s above … or more; I can’t even tell. All these things are a result of the mismanaged economy.

“We buy fuel with dollars, so if the economy is not managed well and the dollar-to-cedi rate is lower, the prices of goods and services will decrease, but because the economy has been mismanaged, petrol is expensive. The NDC has the men and women to manage the economy very well. When we come back to power, we will ensure we make life better for you people,” he stated.

He attributed the current surge in fuel and food prices to what he described as the mismanagement of the economy by the Akufo-Addo administration.

  • I’ll improve fisheries sector when I become a president – Mahama vows

I’ll improve fisheries sector when I become a president – Mahama vows

In a passionate address to fisherfolk in Axim, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, expressed deep concern over the alleged diversion and mismanagement of premix fuel under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He specifically accused the government of politicizing the distribution of this vital commodity, asserting that it has reached a peak under the current administration.

Reflecting on the NDC’s track record, Mahama highlighted the establishment of the landing beach committee during their time in power, emphasizing the judicious distribution of premix fuel.

In contrast, he lamented the current situation, characterizing it as a peak in fuel diversion and mismanagement.

Assuring the fisherfolk of positive change if elected in the 2024 general elections, Mahama pledged to overhaul the fisheries sector.

Central to this commitment is the promise to appoint a competent and effective fisheries minister who will work tirelessly to address the challenges facing the industry.

“When we were in power, we set up the landing beach committee, and at that time, anyone could be a member. The premix was distributed judiciously. But now, fuel diversion and mismanagement of the distribution of premix fuel appear to have reached its peak. The NPP government is politicizing the distribution,” he lamented.

He added that, “I know that by God’s grace, the NDC will win the elections, and I promise to improve the fisheries sector if elected in the 2024 polls. I will give you a sector minister who will perform better.”

Meanwhile, the government has responded to concerns by introducing a new digital system aimed at streamlining the process of acquiring premix fuel.

The innovative approach involves providing fisherfolks with digital Canoe Identification Cards linked to their vessels.

This new system, characterized by its efficiency and transparency, seeks to eliminate issues such as stress and hoarding associated with traditional methods.

The digital cards enable fisherfolks to directly access the required quantity of premix fuel at the pumps.

The data generated through this system plays a crucial role in enhancing delivery efficiency, as it allows for real-time tracking of orders, transportation, delivery, and fueling transactions.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture to modernize and improve the fisheries sector.

As part of the technological upgrade, 31 landing beaches have already been equipped with the necessary pumps, and work is underway to extend this system to other locations.

This holistic approach aims to create a transparent and accountable process in the distribution of premix fuel, addressing the challenges faced by the fishing community.

Fuel diversion, mismanagement of distribution of premix fuel intensified under Akufo-Addo’s leadership – Mahama

National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has denounced the government for allegedly politicizing the distribution of premix fuel.

During an engagement with fisherfolk in Axim, Western Region, as part of his “Building the Ghana We Want” tour, Mahama acknowledged the concerns raised by locals who asserted that they were not receiving adequate premix fuel for fishing.

In his response, Mahama criticized the current government, holding it responsible for the reported challenges faced by artisanal fishers, suggesting that the government’s actions have negatively impacted their work.

Mr Mahama reiterated his commitment to enhancing the fisheries sector and pledged significant reforms if elected in the upcoming general elections.

“I know that by God’s grace, the NDC will win the elections, and I promise to improve the fisheries sector if elected in the 2024 polls. I will give you a sector minister who will perform better,” he said.

In Takoradi, residents expressed support for the NDC leader’s 24-hour economy campaign policy during his tour.

  • What can you offer us, we got a region from Akufo-Addo – Sefwi Wiawso Manhene asks Mahama

What can you offer us, we got a region from Akufo-Addo – Sefwi Wiawso Manhene asks Mahama

During a courtesy visit to the Paramount Chief of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II, former President John Dramani Mahama received two requests from the traditional leader for consideration.

The paramount chief expressed his desire for the restoration of certain traditional political powers that have been withdrawn from traditional leaders by the state.

According to him, the absence of these powers has created challenges in the administration of chiefdoms and communities, leading to acts of recalcitrance and deviancy.

“I am glad you have visited me in my palace. Let me make this point that politicians have taken the powers of the chiefs, who are now powerless to the extent that when we summon people to appear before us, they threaten to take me to court, but this was not the case in the past.

“If Mahama wants to come back then he should give us that authority again, and if that request is granted all the chief will support him,” he said.

The Paramount Chief of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, Katakyie Kwasi Bumagama II, also requested that former President John Dramani Mahama continues the developmental projects initiated in the Western North Region.

He highlighted that although the region was created during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s tenure, there is still a need to complete various developmental projects to bring the region on par with others like Ashanti and Greater Accra.

The appeal was made during Mahama’s visit as part of his tour of the Western North Region.

“Akufo-Addo said he has given us a region but the region is not complete, so as he (Mahama) is coming back, what is he coming to support us with to uplift the region to be on the same level with the Ashanti region… so this is my request,” he said.

Sefwi Wiawso Manhene calls on Mahama to restore their authority as chiefs

The Paramount Chief of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, Katayie Kwasi Bumangama II, has called on former President John Dramani Mahama to pledge the restoration of the chieftaincy institution’s authority if he emerges victorious in the 2024 elections.

Chief Bumangama II expressed concerns during Mahama’s visit to Sefwi Wiawso as part of his Building Ghana Tour, highlighting the diminished power of traditional leaders to summon individuals who violate local laws.

The chief urged Mahama to commit to reinstating chiefs’ authority to summon those who defy local laws, believing that such a promise would garner widespread support for the former president.

“I am glad you have visited me in my palace. Let me make this point that politicians have taken the powers of the chiefs, who are now powerless to the extent that when we summon people to appear before us, they threaten to take me to court, but this was not the case in the past.

“If Mahama wants to come back then he should give us that authority again, and if that request is granted all the chief will support him.”

He added, “Akufo-Addo said he has given us a region but the region is not complete, so as he (Mahama) is coming back, what is he coming to support us with to uplift the region to be on the same level with the Ashanti region …so this is my request.”

  • An Akan running mate will help Mahama in 2024 elections – Political Science Lecturer

An Akan running mate will help Mahama in 2024 elections – Political Science Lecturer

Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, Dr. Alidu Seidu, has put forth a suggestion that the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, should contemplate selecting an Akan as his running mate for the 2024 election.

He explained that this is necessary “because of the dominance of the Akan votes and the significant contribution the Akan vote can make to the NDC’s victory in 2024 election.”

In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, December 14, Dr. Seidu highlighted that while the Volta region, Oti region, and the five regions of the north have consistently been the stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), relying solely on votes from these regions would pose a challenge for the party to secure victory in an election.

“So, I think a lot of people are calling for him to look beyond the Volta region and go to maybe an Akan-dominated region. The running mate should be an Akan either from the Ashanti region or any of the Akan-speaking regions,” he said.

Dr. Seidu has emphasized the importance for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to consider a running mate who can seamlessly continue in a leadership role, especially since John Dramani Mahama would have only one term left if he emerges victorious in the polls.

His comments come amid increasing pressure on Mr. Mahama to announce his running mate. During Mr. Mahama’s campaign tour in the Bono and Western North regions, traditional leaders made suggestions regarding potential running mates. Additionally, NDC youth groups in the Volta and Oti regions have expressed their desire for the running mate to come from the NDC stronghold.

Dr. Seidu noted that the lobbying by traditional rulers might be rooted in the expectation that their regions would benefit in terms of development. He also acknowledged that individuals being lobbied for might find it appropriate to engage with traditional rulers due to the respect they command.

Despite the lobbying, John Dramani Mahama has stated that the decision on the running mate will be made in February 2024, adding a timeline to the anticipation surrounding the selection.

“I don’t choose a running mate alone. Myself, together with the Functional Executive Committee and Council of Elders, pick from a list and decide on one person,” he pointed out.

He urged those appealing for their preferred candidates to exercise restraint.

“I would pray for your patience, as we all know that God grants the King and the NDC doesn’t discriminate.”

Mr Mahama was partnered by Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang in the 2020 election, and there are suggestions she may be retained, although others want to see a new face.

  • My focus will be to complete abandoned projects – Mahama

My focus will be to complete abandoned projects – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has given assurances that if the NDC returns to power, stalled infrastructure projects in all districts of the country will be given top priority.

Numerous government-sponsored projects are currently facing delays for various reasons.

The former president, noting that several initiatives launched during his administration, such as Community Day Schools and health facilities, have come to a standstill, emphasized during a Town Hall Meeting in Nsawura that the resources available to the government, upon assuming power, will be dedicated to completing these projects.

“The little money available will be used to complete the abandoned projects across the country before we start fresh ones. That is how we can yield full benefit from all of them,” he said.

He added that, “I am not talking about projects started under my government but others the Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia government will not be able to complete before leaving office.”

The persistent reluctance of governments to finalize the infrastructure projects initiated by their predecessors remains a concern for many voters.

In Bodi, the traditional authority expressed dissatisfaction with the deteriorating state of roads in the area. They appealed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take this issue into serious consideration if successful in regaining governmental power.

Nana Kwasi Ofori Ababio highlighted that the substandard roads have had adverse effects on local businesses and the delivery of quality healthcare in the region.

The former President criticized the NPP government for its neglect of roads in the country. In addition to halting contracts for cocoa roads that were previously awarded by the previous administration for auditing purposes, the rehabilitation of existing roads has been overlooked.

“Since Western North is a major producer of cocoa, we decided to institute the cocoa roads program to rehabilitate the road here but these were stopped when we left office,” said John Mahama.

“Though the constitution entreats us to continue the infrastructure of the previous government, it has stalled. After the audit of the contracts, the contractors were being made to return to work but they were not financed for that purpose. But since I belong to you people, I will ensure you get a fair share of the national resources,” he assured.

  • Let the Ghanaians decide, do not rig elections – Mahama to EC

Let the Ghanaians decide, do not rig elections – Mahama to EC

As the upcoming elections draw near, John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 elections, has earnestly appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure a fair and credible general election without any form of manipulation.

Addressing an enthusiastic gathering of students at the Wiaso College of Education and Nursing Training in the Western North Region during the ‘Building Ghana Together’ tour, the former president emphasized the crucial role the Electoral Commission plays in upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

Mahama expressed, “They should do their duty to God and country. They shouldn’t cheat for anybody. I don’t want them to cheat for me and they shouldn’t rig the election for anybody. They should let the wishes of the Ghanaian people prevail,” he said.

Directing his appeal to the Electoral Commission officers, Mahama urged them to conscientiously carry out their responsibilities on Election Day, adhering strictly to the established rules and regulations.

He emphasized the need for a free and transparent electoral environment.

Reflecting on his previous experience as President of Ghana, Mahama asserted, “Electoral Commission Officers, I am appealing to your conscience and your heart, on that day 7th December when you come out, do your work as strictly and according to the rules as possible”.

“I have that experience, I have been President of Ghana before and you all know the work that I did when I was President. I know that on 7th December, 2024, Insha Allah, NDC will win the election”.

Encouraging the supporters, Mahama urged them to exercise their right to vote in large numbers, expressing his belief that the NDC’s return to power would contribute to the country regaining its economic strength.

  • My next govt will provide you a rent assistance scheme – Mahama promises teachers, farmers

My next govt will provide you a rent assistance scheme – Mahama promises teachers, farmers

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has announced the introduction of a rent assistance scheme in his next government aimed at assisting teachers and farmers in securing affordable housing.

As to how the scheme would operate, the former president explained that a portion of the workers’ salaries would be deducted monthly until they fully covered the cost of the house.

While addressing his supporters in Nsawura as part of his ‘Building the Ghana We Want’ tour in the Western Region, he emphasised that these homes will be priced in the local currency.

According to Mr Mahama, such a scheme has become imperative owing to the 2-year advance rent scheme being practiced by some landlords.

“Many workers are struggling with the 2-year advance rent scheme, and their salaries aren’t always enough to cover the costs. My government will support associations like teachers and farmers by implementing a rent assistance scheme to help build houses for their workers. We will deduct a portion of their monthly salaries for this purpose, and by the time they retire, they’ll have their own houses. We will take the housing scheme seriously. When I say housing, what I mean is affordable housing, and we will endeavour to price it in our local currency,” he said.

The 2-year advance rent scheme, where some landlords demand for payment of rend for 2 years and more, has been frowned upon by many, especially tenants.

Public Relations Officer of the Rent Control Department, Emmanuel Kporsu, has clarified the 2-year rent advance scheme, stating that paying a landlord more than six months’ rent is not considered a criminal offense.

According to Mr Kporsu, the legality hinges on whether the landlord specifically demanded payment for more than six months.

He clarified that the law explicitly prohibits landlords from requiring tenants to pay one to two years of rent. However, if a tenant voluntarily chooses to pay for an extended period, even up to two years, without any explicit demand from the landlord, it does not constitute an offense under the law.

Section 25 subsection 5 of the Rent Act, 1963, Act 220 states that “A person who as a condition of the grant, renewal or continuance of a tenancy demands in the case of a monthly or shorter tenancy, the payment in advance of more than a month’s rent or in the case of a
tenancy exceeding six months, the payment in advance of more than six months rent, commits an offence and is liable on conviction by the Rent Magistrate to a fine not exceeding two hundred and fifty penalty units.”

My running mate will be unveiled in February – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his running mate for the 2024 general elections will be unveiled in February 2024.

Emphasizing that the decision is not solely his to make, Mahama cited the NDC’s constitution, highlighting the involvement of the Functional Executive Committee (FEC), the Council of Elders, and himself in the selection process.

“It appears every region I go everyone has a vice presidential candidate for me. I said in Bono Region that the NDC constitution has stipulated how a running mate should be selected, I cannot take that decision alone.

“I have to do that with the Functional Executive Committee and the Council of Elders and then go through the list of people who are qualified to be running mate then we select one.  We are going to do that God willing, February.

“So all those who want their preferred persons to be selected should pray that our hearts will be touched to select that person. Let us all be patient and when the time is due we will,” he said while interacting with the Chief of Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region of Ghana, Okatakyie Kwasi Bumangama II, on Wednesday, December 13.

He urged patience, stating, “So all those who want their preferred persons to be selected should pray that our hearts will be touched to select that person. Let us all be patient, and when the time is due, we will.”

In response, Okatakyie Kwasi Bumangama II expressed concern about the diminished power of chiefs, attributing it to constitutional changes.

He called on Mahama to restore the authority of chiefs if he seeks to return to office, asserting, “If [Mr. Mahama] wants to come back, then he should give us that power again, and we will all support him.”

“I am glad you have visited me in my palace. Let me make this point that politicians have taken the powers of the chiefs, who are now powerless to the extent that people I summon to appear before me threaten to take me to court but this was not the case in the past.

“If [Mr Mahama] wants to come back then he should give us that power again and we will all support him,” he demanded.

  • Akufo-Addo has collapsed every sector of the economy – Mahama

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that every sector in Ghana is currently facing distress and collapse under the administration of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia.

Speaking during his Building Ghana tour while addressing the Chief and people of Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North region, the former President emphasized the urgent need for the NDC to rescue the country from what he perceives as the deteriorating state under the ruling NPP.

Mahama expressed concern about Ghana regressing under Akufo-Addo’s leadership and argued that the current administration has failed comprehensively to improve the fortunes of Ghanaians over the past seven years.

“Every sector in the country is under distress, I have said before that the development of a nation is like a baton race but unfortunately, the baton I handed over to Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia fell along the way. So we [NDC] have to come back, pick the baton and continue the race,” he said.

The former president emphasized the need for experienced leadership which can help change the fortunes of the country.

“It is time for someone with experience, someone who has done the work before, it is time for the real men in Ghana to return and pick up the baton and continue the race and that is why the NDC has selected me to return and continue the good works we started,” he added.

Member of Parliament for the Tamale South constituency, Haruna Iddrisu, expressed confidence that Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the former president and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), would emerge victorious in the 2024 general election under conditions that are free, fair, and credible.

He asserted that if Ghanaians were to cast their votes considering the current economic conditions and the overall state of the country, the NDC firmly believed that Mr. Mahama would secure victory in any free, fair, and credible elections held in Ghana in 2024.

“If Ghanaians are to vote based on the state of the country, the state of its institutions and the state of the suffering of the people of Ghana, Mr John Dramani Mahama will humble others,” he said.

Mr. Iddrisu, a former Minority Leader in Parliament, made these remarks during the inauguration of the Upper East Regional Women’s Wing Working Committee of the party. The event centered around the theme, “Effective mobilization of the women’s front.”

He said, “2024 offers the NDC the best opportunity to recapture political power, and we all must endeavour to work to support John Dramani Mahama.”

The MP emphasized that Mr. Mahama’s extensive experience in governance makes him the right candidate to lead Ghana towards improvement.

While expressing confidence in the NDC’s victory, he cautioned the party against complacency, emphasizing the importance of conveying credible and sustainable messages to the public.

Mr. Iddrisu urged NDC members, particularly communicators, to highlight the party’s positive contributions and development projects during its time in government.

The purpose of this initiative is to interact with the public and discuss the NDC’s proposal for a 24-hour economy.

The 24-hour economy policy, introduced by the opposition party, has generated both praise and criticism since its announcement by the NDC flagbearer in preparation for the 2024 elections.

Speaking to the press, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, expressed the party’s confidence in the potential economic benefits of the 24-hour economy policy.

Ashanti Regional Secretary, Dr. Frank Amoakohene

He stated that the NDC aims to launch a sensitization campaign to underscore the significance of this policy, as emphasized by former President John Dramani Mahama during his recent ‘Building Ghana Tour.’

The campaign is expected to engage the public and provide insights into the party’s vision for economic development through the proposed 24-hour economy.

“We will assure citizens to not give up because help is on its way. H.E John Dramani Mahama will rescue the country come 7th December, 2024 and he shall implement the 24 hour economy which will transform Ghana within 24 months,” he said.

According to Dr. Amoakohene, the policy championed by the NDC will lead Ghana into economic prosperity.

“The NDC, under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, is committed to the vision of a 24-hour economy. This proposition is driven by the pressing need to address unemployment challenges across various sectors of the economy. We believe that transitioning to a 24-hour economy will unlock immense opportunities for businesses and individuals,” he indicated.
