  • Akosombo Dam Spillage: Charity alone is not enough, find a lasting solution – Kofi Bentil tells Govt

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, strongly condemned the government’s response to the Akosombo Dam spillage, labeling it as both inadequate and a hastily made decision.

Expressing his views during a panel discussion themed “Building Resilience: A Socio-Economic Response to Natural Disasters” at the Africa Leadership Initiative West Africa (ALIWA), Mr. Bentil voiced disappointment in the government’s poorly planned efforts to address the immediate concerns of affected residents.

While acknowledging the commendable efforts of Citi FM and Citi TV in providing relief and implementing long-term solutions in the heavily affected areas of the Lower Volta Region, Mr. Bentil underscored the importance of not solely relying on charitable initiatives.

He emphasized the necessity for a robust and coordinated national-level approach.

Expressing his astonishment at the lack of a serious government response, Mr. Bentil questioned the ad-hoc arrangement at the national level.

“I am still shocked that we have a disaster of that nature and there was no serious government response; what we saw was not serious. Look, Citi FM has done a yeoman’s job, but is that their responsibility? When you have a disaster of that magnitude, it is not charity that solves the problem.”

“At a national level, what I saw was an ad-hoc arrangement. Where is NADMO? Where is the Ministry of Interior? Where is the State in dealing with this in a way that is not ad-hoc or knee-jerk? Don’t we have systems in place that can take care of this? I am saying this because we are due for a major earthquake, and if we cannot deal with this, then God help us all.”

He queried the absence of organizations like NADMO, the Ministry of Interior, and the State in dealing with the situation in a more systematic manner, raising concerns about the preparedness for a potential major earthquake.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Mr. Bentil called on Parliament to conduct a thorough investigation into the spillage. He emphasized that the flooding was not a natural disaster but a consequence of deliberate actions, pointing out that someone initiated the release of water despite being aware of downstream residents.

Sentencing coup plotters to death by hanging is inhumane – Nana Yaa Jantuah

The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has called for a reconsideration of the country’s death penalty, deeming death by hanging as inhumane.

Her remarks follow the recent sentencing of six individuals to death by hanging for conspiring and committing high treason on January 24, 2024.

In an interview on TV3, Nana Yaa suggested exploring alternative methods of the death penalty, such as an electric chair or lethal injection, emphasizing the need for more dignified approaches.

“It’s not humane, if they want to keep the death penalty at least they should die in some form of dignity. Hanging is not a very pleasant way to go to heaven or hell. Why can’t the national get an electric chair or lethal injection? I know most people on death row are not even killed but conditions in the prison are bad,” she said.

“I was disturbed in the night especially when I saw the woman among them. I wanted women to petition the President so that they should be exempted from the penalty. It came as a shock to me, Women normally don’t get involved in these things. I later found out she was highly involved in the matter, how they were manufacturing bombs and stocking guns and that she was going to be the chief of staff,” she mentioned.

She expressed concern over the unpleasant nature of death by hanging and urged the nation to consider humane alternatives.

Expressing her distress, Nana Yaa particularly highlighted the involvement of a woman, Warrant Officer Class Two Esther Saan Dekuwine, among the accused.

She urged women to petition the President for exemption from the penalty, citing her shock at a woman being intricately involved in manufacturing bombs and stocking guns for what was revealed to be a serious offense.

The accused also included Dr. Mac Palm (now deceased), Donya Kafui alias Ezor, Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, Yohannes Zikpi, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, and Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon.

    Mahama shakes Kumasi

The streets of Kumasi, traditionally considered a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), witnessed a massive turnout of people, predominantly NDC supporters, during the former President, John Dramani Mahama’s ‘24-hour Economy Sensitisation Walk.

The event, held on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, aims to promote the NDC’s primary policy proposal for the 2024 elections: the establishment of a 24-hour economy in Ghana.

Noteworthy personalities, not typically associated with active party politics, were also spotted at the event, including the retired Commissioner of Police, Kofi Boakye.

Former President John Dramani Mahama outlined the 24-hour economy proposal, emphasizing that the next NDC government intends to implement measures to encourage businesses in Ghana to operate around the clock. The policy initiative involves providing incentives for businesses to function day and night, potentially in three shifts, ultimately generating more employment opportunities for the youth.

Mahama highlighted the crucial role of a robust police service in safeguarding businesses during the night economy. He expressed the commitment of a prospective NDC administration to equip the youth with entrepreneurial knowledge and skills for a sustainable future.

“A new NDC administration will work urgently to equip our youth with the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future. We will introduce a 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks for manufacturers who will run extra shifts to create more room for employment,” Mahama stated during the rally.

The “24-hour Economy Sensitisation Walk” serves as a platform for Mahama and the NDC to engage with the public, promoting their vision for economic development and job creation. As the 2024 elections draw near, the rally in Kumasi signifies a strategic move by the NDC to garner support and showcase their policy priorities to the electorate.

  • COP Kofi Boakye spotted at John Mahama’s ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in Ashanti Region

COP Kofi Boakye spotted at John Mahama’s ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in Ashanti Region

The ‘Building Ghana Tour’ led by former President John Dramani Mahama received an unexpected participant on Wednesday as retired Commissioner of Police, Nathan Kofi Boakye, joined the political figure during his activities in the Ashanti region.

Commissioner Boakye, who once served as the Police Commander for the Ashanti Region before his retirement, was notably present at the Kejetia Market, a focal point for the ‘Building Ghana Tour.’

Former President Mahama addressed a gathering there as part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s “24-Hour Economy Walk,” an initiative aimed at sensitizing the public about the party’s policies.

Despite his prominent presence, the retired Police Commissioner declined to comment when approached by Joy News at the Kejetia Market, leaving the public and media curious about his involvement in the political event.

Later in the day, Commissioner Kofi Boakye was spotted on the podium at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi, where John Mahama addressed the enthusiastic crowd following the culmination of the 24-hour walk.

Commissioner Boakye, who has been elevated to the retired rank after serving as the Police Commander for the Ashanti Region, brings an intriguing dimension to the political landscape by aligning himself with the ‘Building Ghana Tour.’

His presence has sparked discussions about the potential intersections between retired law enforcement officials and political engagements.

As the ‘Building Ghana Tour’ progresses, the unexpected participation of Commissioner Kofi Boakye adds an element of intrigue to the political narrative, leaving observers to speculate on the dynamics at play and the implications for the political landscape in the Ashanti region.

  • Election day should be holiday so people can vote – EC proposes

Election day should be holiday so people can vote – EC proposes

The Electoral Commission (EC) has tabled a proposal, advocating for the designation of election days as national holidays.

The recommendation was presented during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 22, 2024.

The EC emphasized at the meeting that such a move could significantly contribute to cultivating a more robust democratic culture in the country.

Advocates of the proposal argue that designating election days as national holidays would provide citizens with ample time and opportunity to participate actively in the electoral process.

This increased civic engagement, they believe, could lead to a more informed and participatory electorate.

In addition to this, the EC is also proposing that the December 7 election date should be reviewed to November 7. The EC clarified that the proposal, initially brought forward by political parties, aims to provide ample time for the commission to effectively manage its operations, particularly in the event of a run-off.

However, in a reaction the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has kicked against changing the December 7 election date.

  • Allow your successors to govern with all their force – Julius Malema tells former presidents

Allow your successors to govern with all their force – Julius Malema tells former presidents

The leader and founder of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has advised former African presidents to refrain from making the governance of their successors challenging.

Speaking at a public dialogue organized by the pressure group AriseGhana in Accra on Tuesday, January 23, Mr Malema emphasized that former presidents should assume the role of statesmen, participating in state visits at home and avoiding engagement in opposition to their successors.

He insisted that former presidents should not interfere in the affairs of ruling presidents and should be held accountable without involving themselves in any civilized democracy.

“You have to ensure that democracy matures in such a manner in Africa, where the previous president does not make it his business to fight the current president, you must allow the new to lead with all their force because you were the same, it doesn’t mean you are perfect”.

“No African leader, who is on retirement, should lead from the grave. They must all be like all other progressive former presidents who are statements at home, waiting for courtesy visits and consultations, and attending to other state functions. Those are the duties of former presidents because Africa must be stable, Africa must go through democracy at all times,” Mr Malema said.

Mr Malema stressed the importance of allowing democracy to mature in Africa, where former presidents peacefully allow the new leaders to take charge.

He urged them to be like other progressive former presidents who remain statesmen at home, participating in courtesy visits, consultations, and other state functions.

Encouraging African leaders not to impose themselves beyond constitutional requirements, Malema highlighted the democratic principle of peacefully exiting when voted out of power.

He called on all African leaders to leave office without resorting to military intervention, emphasizing that no one is born a leader, and political office should not be left with a coffin.

“We call on all African leaders not to leave an office with a coffin. When the time comes for them to go they must leave without calling the army to to extend their term” he said at an event in Accra organised by Arise Ghana, titled, ‘A Day of Dialogue With Julius Malema.’

“No one is born a leader. No one is a traditional leader in a political office. If you want to be a traditional leader, go and fight in your tribe for those types of issues. We don’t subscribe to people who want to leave a political office with a coffin,” he added.

Your proposal to conduct general elections on November 7 will not receive our support – NDC to EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unequivocally rejected the Electoral Commission’s proposal to change the election date from December 7 to November 7.

The proposition, discussed during the recent Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on January 22, 2024, also included the recommendation to designate election days as national holidays.

Dr. Omane Boamah, the Director of Elections for the NDC, conveyed the party’s strong opposition to altering the established election timeline in a Facebook post.

He underscored the NDC’s commitment to the current election date and urged the Electoral Commission to conduct a comprehensive review of the entire electoral process.

Dr. Boamah stated, “On IPAC matters, for the avoidance of doubt:

    1. We (NDC) do not support the November date for elections.

    2. Instead of cherry-picking, we (NDC) call for a comprehensive review of the electoral process through inclusive and proper dialogue; we already submitted our proposals to the EC.

    3. On voting on prayer/worship days, we (NDC) are open to discussions.”

No one is born a leader, when your time is up leave for another to take over – Julius Malema tells African presidents

The leader and founder of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has emphasized that leadership is not an inherent trait.

Speaking at a public dialogue organized by the pressure group AriseGhana in Accra on Tuesday, January 23, Mr. Malema encouraged African presidents to gracefully step down when their time in office expires for successors to take over.

He called on all African leaders to leave office without resorting to military intervention, emphasizing that no one is born a leader, and political office should not be left with a coffin.

“We call on all African leaders not to leave an office with a coffin. When the time comes for them to go they must leave without calling the army to to extend their term.

Video: NPP’s meeting with Kumasi Traditional Council over Wontumi’s alleged derogatory remarks to Otumfuo

On Monday, January 22, 2023, the Kumasi Traditional Council convened a session to address an alleged case of gross disrespect towards the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The accused, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, faced accusations of threatening to challenge Otumfuo’s authority if necessary.

During the session, the NPP leadership, represented by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah, requested a two-week extension from the date of the meeting for Wontumi to appear, citing health reasons.

However, the Council, presided over by the Bantamahene, rejected the justification after various chiefs expressed their views and strongly rebuked Wontumi, his media establishment, and the NPP.

Ultimately, the Council mandated the party to produce Wontumi within seven days.

Additionally, the Council insisted on the presence of Maurice Ampaw and the management of Wontumi Media regarding the lawyer’s remarks on the matter involving the station’s owner.

Ampaw, on record, had criticized the chiefs, branding them as rogue elements while expressing their desire to censure Wontumi, the owner of the station.

There’s so much disrespect in Ghana’s politics – Manhyia chiefs bemoan

Members of the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) have voiced their regret over a visit to Jubilee House, the official residence of the President of Ghana, citing disrespectful treatment by the security personnel on duty.

The revelation was made by Otumfuo’s respected linguist, Nana Kofi-Wusu, during discussions with a delegation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which included General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, and Ernest Owusu Bempah, among other Ashanti regional executives. The summons came in response to alleged disparaging comments made by the Ashanti regional Chairman of the party against Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during the party’s parliamentary vetting ahead of the January 27, 2024 primaries.

Nana Kofi-Wusu expressed his disappointment, stating, “There’s too much disrespect in how you guys are conducting your political activities, even though some NDC and NPP members accord us the needed respect.”

He went on to share a specific incident during their visit to Jubilee House: “Last time we came to your place, I mean Jubilee House, the President had traveled then, so we decided to visit the Vice President. When we got there, this was our treatment: ‘Hay!! Don’t pass here, pass here, go!’ What they did to us in the Jubilee House, oh. But you come here with pride, we even facilitate your coming to Manhyia without any frustration.”

Nana Kofi-Wusu emphasized the contrasting treatment, pointing out that while political leaders are accorded respect when visiting Manhyia, the same courtesy is not reciprocated during their visits to the Jubilee House.

“The treatment was very bad and humiliating. Most of you come to Manhyia with your cameras to even take pictures in Manhyia with Otumfuo, including when shaking hands with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and us when you come here don’t we allow you to do all this easily?” he questioned the NPP delegation.

He concluded by cautioning the NPP leaders, stating, “So, Nana B, Koduah, and all of you here, do you think we will allow you people in the time ahead of you to destroy Asanteman through NPP’s political activities? No, it will never happen. Kick out the odd one that wants to destroy your party and the relation between Manhyia and the NPP. My proverb for you is that don’t allow one groundnut to destroy thousands of your groundnut. Remove the rotten one and throw it away for your peace.”

Your suffering will end when you vote NDC into power – Mahama to Ghanaians

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has stated that as long as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains in power, Ghanaians will endure ongoing hardships.

Criticizing the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government, Mahama accused it of lacking ideas and plans to improve the living conditions of ordinary citizens.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 24, the former President urged Ghanaians to avoid repeating mistakes from previous elections.

Mahama emphasized the readiness of the NDC to address the country’s economic challenges for the benefit of its citizens.

Voicing concerns about the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption, he stated that it would increase tariffs by almost 21% and exacerbate hardships on Ghanaians, affecting the prices of goods, services, and transport fares.

Mahama supported organized labor’s call for the government to reverse the decision.

Additionally, Mahama urged the government to exercise prudence in using the recently approved $600 million IMF bailout to address economic challenges. Despite the release of the first tranche last year, he contended that Ghanaians continue to endure difficulties.

The disbursement, approved on January 19, 2024, follows Ghana’s successful completion of the 2023 Article IV consultation and the first review of the Extended Credit Facility arrangement.

Expressing concern about persistent hardships, Mahama emphasized that the Akufo-Addo-led administration must ensure the judicious use of funds to bring relief to suffering citizens. He concluded that as long as the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia and NPP remain in office, Ghanaians will continue to face challenges despite the IMF’s financial assistance.

Most politicians are shedding blood for power – Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong

The Executive Director of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong, has asserted that a significant number of politicians in Ghana are resorting to spiritual violence as a means to secure victory in elections.

During an interview with Adom FM, he expressed the view that those engaging in such practices are collectively responsible for contributing to bloodshed.

Additionally, he issued a warning to politicians, advising against actions that lead to the loss of lives during elections

Rev. Dr. Frimpong emphasized that politicians should prioritize serving the people rather than engaging in destructive behaviors.

“When you become a Member of Parliament or president, you come in with the intention to serve. Why should your decision to lead and develop us result in the death of people. After killing them, which people will benefit from your development, if they are all dead?” he questioned.

The former General Secretary of the Christian Council questioned the rationale behind politicians resorting to violence and bloodshed in their quest for electoral victory.

He challenged the mindset of politicians, emphasizing that their decision to lead and bring about development should not result in the death of citizens.

Rev. Dr. Frimpong highlighted a specific incident in Techiman where six voters lost their lives during the 2020 elections.

“You went to Techiman for the voters to vote for you into office for which you will develop the place. But the people you intend to develop, died before the development came to them.

“So, what benefit did the party member who died during elections get from your development?” he quizzed.

He urged politicians to value the lives of the people and encouraged them to seek peaceful and democratic means to resolve differences.

The Ashanti regional branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) strongly condemns the government, accusing it of neglecting and sidelining the Ashanti region in terms of development.

Specifically pointing fingers at President Akufo-Addo, the party claims a deliberate lack of attention and resources directed towards the region’s growth.

During a press conference in Kumasi, Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Region Secretary of the NDC, expressed concern that the government seems to be intentionally depriving the Ashanti region of developmental projects, contrasting it with other regions experiencing consistent infrastructural advancements.

Amoakohene urged the electorate to consider voting out the NPP in the upcoming 2024 polls, citing their dissatisfaction with the perceived neglect.

He emphasized the need for the government to expedite the completion of all stalled projects in the region.

“We believe that the Ashanti region has been sidelined, so far as development is concerned. And it’s even reflected in his appointments, ministers, Chief Executives and others.

“We believe that this current NPP set-up has nothing to offer the Ashanti region,” the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC said.

A committed member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has disclosed that his love for Ghana motivated him to forgo a well-paid position at an international organization, opting instead to serve the country for a significantly reduced salary.

During an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues program on Sunday, January 21, Spio-Garbrah shared insights into his decision to take a substantial pay cut when accepting a ministerial role in Ghana.

Despite earning $10,000 per month at the Africa Development Bank, he chose to receive a monthly salary of only $500 as a government minister.

Reflecting on his choices, Spio-Garbrah posed the question, “Will you accept to leave a $10,000 salary at Africa Development Bank to take a $500 a month as a minister? There have been opportunities I have lost because of my passion and dedication to my country and continent.”

He served as Minister for Trade and Industry from 2014 to 2017 in the Mahama administration and has previously held ministerial roles in the Rawlings administration, including Minister of Communications, Minister of Education, and Acting Minister of Mines & Energy.

In the election held on Sunday, he secured 1209 votes, surpassing his opponent, Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, who garnered 952 votes out of the total 2161 votes cast.

The electoral process involved the active participation of over 2100 NDC delegates from the Odododiodioo constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie has emerged as the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) chosen Parliamentary Candidate for the Odododiodioo constituency in anticipation of the 2024 General Elections.

Securing a total of 1209 votes in the Sunday election, Mr Ashie outperformed his rival, Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, who garnered 952 votes out of the 2161 total votes cast.

Over 2100 NDC delegates from the Odododiodioo constituency in the Greater Accra Region participated in the election, which had initially been delayed due to an injunction filed by disqualified parliamentary aspirant Michael Nii Yarboi Anan.

The election proceeded on Sunday following the dismissal of the interlocutory injunction application filed by Mr. Yarboi Anan.

Addressing the delegates after his victory, Mr. Kotey Ashie pledged to work towards unity within the party leading up to the December polls.

    Background:

In November 2023, the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC disqualified Michael Nii Yarboi Annan from participating in the parliamentary election in the Odododiodioo Constituency.

The disqualification was based on findings from a special committee established by the Functional Executive Committee, citing that Mr. Annan did not meet the qualification criteria outlined in Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution.

This article stipulates that a member must be an active participant in the party at the constituency level for the four years immediately preceding the date of filing nominations.

Due to a court injunction obtained by the disqualified candidate, the party had initially postponed the primary in the Odododiodioo constituency indefinitely. However, following the court’s dismissal, the party has now granted clearance for the primary to proceed.

I take decisions with them and I know that they are going to crown me with my effort coming 27th January,” she said.

Facing competition from the spokesperson for the Vice President, Dr Gideon Boako, Freda Prempeh is determined to secure a fourth term as the incumbent MP.

Undeterred by the attention garnered by her opponent’s campaign, she remains unfazed and points to her substantial contributions to the constituency, including the sinking of 130 boreholes, construction of 11 chips compounds, and lobbying for educational facilities and infrastructure projects.

“I have worked so hard in this constituency, have been able to sink and make 130 bore-holes, and have been able to construct 11 chips compound.”

“Have lobbied for about 25 educational facilitates, have done two AstroTurf’s in the constituency in terms of electricity the coverage of this constituency is over 85%.”

“I want the woman to be retained because of the development she brought to us here, some men who came before her couldn’t perform this well,” one of them said.

“The woman is an MP who serves well.”

Citing her extensive work, she highlighted achievements such as two AstroTurf projects and an electricity coverage exceeding 85% in the constituency.

Delegates supporting her reelection emphasize the positive impact of her development initiatives, citing her effective service as a reason for her retention.

“I want the woman to be retained because of the development she brought to us here; some men who came before her couldn’t perform this well,” one delegate expressed. Another added, “The woman is an MP who serves well.”

    Odododiodioo: NDC Parliamentary Primary underway

More than 2300 delegates from the National Democratic Congress have commenced the voting process to select a Parliamentary Candidate for the Odododiodioo constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

This follows the rejection of an interlocutory injunction application filed by disqualified candidate Michael Nii Yarboi Anan, which initially led to the party’s indefinite postponement of the election.

Paul Nii Oblie Laryea, the Chairman of the NDC in the Odododiodioo Constituency, confirmed in an interview with Citi News that the voting process was progressing smoothly.

In a statement issued on Friday, Fifi Fiavi Kwettey, the General Secretary of the NDC, revealed that on January 19, an Accra High Court dismissed the application for an interlocutory injunction. Consequently, the party has resumed the processes leading to the parliamentary election in Odododiodioo.

    Background:

In November 2023, the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC disqualified Michael Nii Yarboi Annan from participating in the parliamentary election in the Odododiodioo Constituency.

The party’s report from last year clarified that the special committee established by the Functional Executive Committee found justifications for Mr. Annan’s disqualification based on Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution.

This article specifies that a member must be an active party member at the constituency level for the four years immediately preceding the date of filing nominations.

Due to a court injunction obtained by the disqualified candidate, the party indefinitely postponed the primary in the Odododiodioo constituency. However, following the court’s dismissal, the party has now given clearance for the primary to proceed.

The court has dismissed an application for an interlocutory injunction by Michael Nii Yarboi Annan against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Odododiodioo primary.

In November 2023, the Functional Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) disqualified Michael Nii Yarboi Annan from participating in the parliamentary election for the Odododiodioo Constituency. The party, in a report issued that year, clarified that the decision was based on findings from a special committee established by the Functional Executive Committee.

According to the party, considering the evidence presented, the special committee was unable to endorse Mr Annan’s qualification to contest the parliamentary primaries in the Odododiodoo constituency based on Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution, which stipulates that, “a member must be an active member of the party at the constituency level for the four years immediately preceding the date of filing nominations.”

The initial postponement of the election had been prompted by the legal challenge, but with the application being rejected, the party has now set a new date for the primary in the mentioned constituency.

Following this development, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revised the date for its parliamentary primary in the Odododiodioo constituency to January 21, 2024.

General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwettey, in a statement issued on Friday, said on January 19, “an Accra High Court dismissed an application for an interlocutory injunction, as a result, the party is resuming processes leading up to the conduct of the parliamentary election in Odododiodioo.”

  • Only NPP or NDC can produce a female President or Vice – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Only NPP or NDC can produce a female President or Vice – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula-Owusu Ekuful, is of the assertion that the dream of Ghana being led by a female president can only be accomplished by the two major political parties: the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an interview on UTV’s Mpu Ne Mpu show, the Ablekuma West MP noted that the country is already nearing the stage where its citizens will be willing to cast their ballot for a woman to lead the nation.

She however noted that this can only be done if the two major political parties avail themselves. She explained that this is due to the duopoly in the political landscape and the failure of smaller political parties to garner a significant number of votes during elections.

“There will come a time when Ghana gets a female President. There will come a time. We are getting there. I said this when Paa Kwesi Nduom was contesting. We went to an event and I represented NPP and we were discussing the progress of women in politics. I said that there must come a time when the two largest political parties provide us females as their running mates to help us reach the dream of a woman being president.

“If you are in these up and coming political parties, your chances of winning the elections are slim but if it is not NPP, then it is NDC. That’s what our politics is looking like. So if NPP or NDC brings a female running mate and win the election, then we get a female Vice President.

“So let us think about it. It’s been over a decade since I said that,” she said.

Ghana has had numerous opportunities to have a female President or Vice President, however, these individuals, such as Akua Donkor,  founder and leader of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and Brigitte Dzogbenuku of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), who belong to the ‘minor’ political parties have been denied by electorates.

It appeared that the country was ready when former President John Dramani Mahama presented former Education Minister Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as his running mate during the 2020 general elections, but the NDC lost the elections to the NPP.

Currently, the flagbearers of the two major political parties, John Mahama of the NDC and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP are yet to announce who their running mates will be.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is said to be part of a list purportedly unveiling a roster of individuals eyeing the NPP’s running mate slot.

The unverified compilation consists of names like Chief of Staff, Frema Opare; Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta; Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu; Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, among others.

But Ursula-Owusu Ekuful, says she has had no conversations with Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia about being his running mate for the 2024 general elections.

According to Mrs Ursula-Ekuful, she has had several conversations with the Vice President, however, they have all focused on Ghana’s digital drives and the measures to be taken to make the lives of Ghanaians better.

“I have had numerous discussions with Dr Bawumia, but we have not talked about the running mate position. We have work to do. I’d want us to leave him to select his own running mate. He should take his time to find someone he wants. We have been talking about what we need to do this year to help citizens and our chances as a party,” she said.

Odododiodio parliamentary election postponed indefinitely – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indefinitely postponed parliamentary primaries in the Odododiodio constituency due to a court injunction obtained by a disqualified candidate.

The party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, announced the temporary halt of all activities related to the primaries in a statement dated January 17, 2024.

The disqualified candidate contested the decision preventing him from participating in the primary, leading to a court-issued interlocutory injunction restraining the NDC from holding the election until the matter is resolved.

The NDC’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) decided, during a meeting on January 16, 2024, to postpone the election indefinitely. The party urged branch and constituency executives to maintain peace and harmony during this period.

The NDC apologized for any inconvenience caused by the postponement and assured members that a new date for the primaries would be communicated once it is fixed.

In November 2023, the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC disqualified Michael Nii Yarboi Annan from participating in the parliamentary election in the Odododiodioo Constituency. The party, in a report issued last year, stated that findings from a special committee justified Mr. Annan’s disqualification from the parliamentary primary.

According to the NDC, the special committee, established by the Functional Executive Committee, could not endorse Mr. Annan’s qualification to contest the parliamentary primaries in the Odododiodioo constituency based on Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution.

It stipulates that “a member must be an active member of the party at the constituency level for the four years immediately preceding the date of filing nominations.”

Akufo-Addo needs prayers, his remarks to Ekumfi constituents was horrible – Abraham Amaliba

The Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has expressed criticism towards President Akufo-Addo for his remarks to the traditional leaders of Ekumfi.

In a meeting at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo indicated that he had not prioritized the development needs of Ekumfi because the constituents voted out the then NPP candidate, Francis Ato Cudjoe, in the 2020 elections.

“Ato Cudjoe was your MP and I made him a Deputy Minister and you voted him out in the last elections and because of that, I did not pay attention to development  in your area, I have to be honest with you but since you have brought it up I will pay attention to it,” the President stated.

Reacting to the President’s comments, Amaliba stated that rather than condemnation, President Akufo-Addo needs prayers. He emphasized that the President’s tendency to make controversial statements requires understanding and prayers for his leadership.

Mr Amaliba mentioned the President’s previous statements in Mepe and emphasized the need for prayers, stating, “This President is incurable when it comes to running his mouth.”

Mr Amaliba argued that President Akufo-Addo may have breached his oath of office by neglecting the development of Ekumfi based on political considerations.

He questioned whether the people of Ekumfi believe the President has acted in accordance with his responsibilities outlined in the directive principles of state policy.

On the other hand, Eric Amoah Twum, a New Patriotic Party Communicator, defended the President’s comments, claiming they were taken out of context.

Mr Twum emphasized that the President’s demeanor during the meeting reflected genuine concern for Ekumfi’s development, and the comments should not be viewed as negative punishment for political reasons.

“The president does not need criticisms again like we are doing. The President deserves prayers; we must pray for this president. When he did in Mepe, he was bashed. Would a normal human being having being bashed that way repeat what he had said again?” Mr. Amaliba said in an interview on New Day, Friday, January 19.

“This President is incurable when it comes to running his mouth,” he added.

According to Abraham Amaliba, the President breached his oath of office for passing such a comment to the people of Ekumfi.

“Would the people of Ekumfi say he has done right to them. Has he not breached his oath? The directive principle of state policy stipulates that the President must ensure even and balanced development, has he not breached this one too?”

Twum urged against relying too heavily on propaganda and emphasized the President’s active engagement in conversations with the Ekumfi leaders as a sign of his commitment to their development.

The Odododiodio constituency parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been indefinitely postponed due to a court injunction obtained by a disqualified candidate, as announced by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, in a statement dated January 17, 2024.

The disqualified candidate contested the decision preventing him from participating in the primary, leading to a court-issued interlocutory injunction restraining the NDC from conducting the election until the matter is resolved.

The NDC’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) decided to postpone the election indefinitely during a meeting on January 16, 2024, and has called for peace among branch and constituency executives during this period.

Just give Bawumia one term – Allotey Jacobs tells Ghanaians

Former Central Region Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs, has appealed to Ghanaians to give Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia a chance to become President.

The veteran politician holds the strong conviction that the Vice President would be able to transform the country if given just one term.

In an interview on Peace FM, Mr Jacobs declared the Vice President as the potential transformative force Ghana needs in its political arena.

Recognizing Bawumia as the “matrix of Ghana politics,” Jacobs lauded him as the first true technocrat to contest presidential elections.

Alotey Jacobs, a well-known figure in Ghanaian politics, expressed his conviction that Bawumia’s technocratic background positions him uniquely to bring about meaningful change in the political landscape.

“Bawumia is the matrix of Ghana politics. First time getting a real technocrat to contest the elections to be a president and that’s what we need in our system.

“The system which we always claim is corrupt, something should change that system and it will take Bawumia. Let’s try him. This is his time. Just give him one term and let’s see how Ghana would be,” he said.

Video of NDC members swearing has been misinterpreted – NDC communicator

A Communication team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Richard Manuribe, has called for calm among Ghanaians in response to a viral video showing some members taking a blood oath.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday, Mr. Manuribe clarified that the ceremony, which occurred in 2019, involved the swearing-in of newly appointed Directors of Election.

He emphasized that the content has been misreported and misinterpreted.

Mr. Manuribe stated, “The NDC is aware of the video because the party organized the event. I was there and part of the people sworn in, but it is never true that there was any pledge to sacrifice our lives and that of our firstborns. It was an oath of allegiance and secrecy.”

He pointed out that the Director of Elections is now Dr. Omane-Boamah, not Afriyie-Ankrah, who was part of the ceremony.

In the video, NDC stalwarts, including Elvis Afriyie Ankrah and Daniel Amartey Mensah, were seen taking secret vows in a meeting.

“By this sword, I vow, that if I compromise, and sell my party out for money for this coming election, may I die and my first born also die in my place, so help me God. Amen,” Mr Ankrah said, holding the sword upright, while barefooted.

The video is believed to be part of the efforts by the NDC to ensure that its members do not betray the party or its flagbearer, John Mahama, who is seeking to return to power after losing the 2020 election to the incumbent President, Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, Mr. Manuribe clarified that the oath was about allegiance to the party and job secrecy, not pledging lives or firstborns.

He dismissed the video as a deliberate attempt to divert attention from pressing national issues, claiming that the footage had been doctored.

Mr. Manuribe asserted, “Why will he swear by blood and our firstborn? Afriyie Ankrah, for instance, is a committed Christian and will not do any such thing. All we did was to swear allegiance to the job.”

A female running mate cannot thrive in Ghana – Allotey Jacobs

Former Central Region Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has expressed reservations about the prospect of having a female running mate, contending that Ghana is not currently prepared for such a development.

While acknowledging the pivotal role a suitable running mate plays in the success of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he argued that the prevailing attitudes towards women in Ghanaian politics have not evolved since Kwame Nkrumah’s era.

Speaking on Peace FM Mr Allotey Jacobs highlighted the challenges faced by women in the rough terrain of politics and cited the limited representation of women in Parliament as indicative of societal perceptions.

“I don’t think Ghana is ripe for a woman as a Running Mate. Ghana is not ripe for it. We haven’t changed our attitude from Kwame Nkrumah’s time till date. We are still the same. Ghana is not ripe for a woman as a running mate. We haven’t changed at all; it’s the same  attitude”.

He explained that “when a woman enters politics, they (Ghanaians) look at the woman from a different angle altogether,” exclaiming, “our politician’s terrain is very, very rough!”

“How many women MPs do you get in Parliament?” he questioned when challenged by a panel member, Kwamena Duncan, that there are some women leaders in the House of Parliament and in other areas of political influence.

Despite expressing optimism for a future where Ghana embraces women in prominent political roles, Allotey Jacobs remained skeptical about their acceptance as running mates in the present political climate.

The ongoing debate surrounding the selection of a Running Mate for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December 7 presidential elections has garnered increased attention.

Certain members and supporters within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have initiated lobbying efforts, with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (‘NAPO’), the Minister of Energy, emerging as a notable candidate.

NAPO is touted for possessing unique leadership qualities that some believe would enhance the NPP’s electoral prospects in the upcoming elections.

Influential party member Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin Central lawmaker, is among those who vocally endorse NAPO as the right candidate for the position.

We need you at the palace, if you like don’t come – Ashanti youth tell Wontumi

The Ashanti youth group has called for the immediate presence of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Wontumi, at the Manhyia palace.

This demand arises in response to alleged  disrespectful comments made by Wontumi towards the revered Ashanti king, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Voicing their dissatisfaction, the youth group sent a resolute message to Wontumi, challenging his statements and insisting that he attend a palace to respond to the allegations leveled at him.

Addressing the press, the leader of the group stated, “Are you okay, Wontumi? Why would you speak against Otumfuo and the people of the Ashanti kingdom? You are not a man, Wontumi. You, little one, have the audacity to speak against our king. We need you in the palace, and be prepared for any consequences if you fail to comply.”The group also accused Wontumi of employing divisive political tactics that could potentially undermine national unity.

The situation remains tense as the plea for accountability and dialogue continues to gain traction within the Ashanti community. Wontumi, a significant political figure in the region, has yet to respond to the specific accusations made by the youth group.

Reports suggest that following the vetting of the Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, confusion arose between the Manhyia South Constituency Organizer and Chairman Wontumi.

This purported disagreement stemmed from Wontumi’s alleged reluctance to provide testimony about the contributions made by the Manhyia South Member of Parliament to the party’s internal activities.

During an approximately 30-minute period of intense confusion, which led to a temporary suspension of the vetting, the outspoken NPP Chairman reportedly conveyed to Otumfuo’s Brempon, Nana Kwaku Duah, the Chief of Kokoso, that he, Wontumi, had established his kingdom in the Ashanti Region.

Furthermore, it is claimed that Chairman Wontumi made a public statement expressing his readiness to challenge Otumfuo on any disagreement with the Asante King.According to Nana Kwaku Dua,  Wontumi stated that ”I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)”.

Tamale: NDC addresses youth rampage over vice chairman’s arrest

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has addressed the situation involving youth who locked up the party’s office in the Northern Region after the arrest of its suspended vice chairman, Alhaji Abdul Hamid.

Following Alhaji Abdul Hamid’s arrest and subsequent release, he was suspended from the party for assaulting the NDC Northern Regional Treasurer, Hajia Shamima Yakubu, during a party executive meeting at the regional office last week.

In an interview with Citi News, Mustapha Gbande, the deputy general secretary of the NDC, explained that the party office has now been reopened.

Mr Gbande noted that some youth may not have fully grasped the implications of the decision, leading to their reaction. The party engaged with these individuals, clarifying the reasons behind the decision and the involvement of the police.

Mr Gbande emphasized that the issue was solely related to the assault and not reflective of the NDC as a whole. Consequently, Tamale has remained calm, the party office has reopened, and normalcy has been restored.

“Some of the youth did not understand the implication and import of the decision that has been taken, and so that was the reason they were reacting. We have engaged some people and explained why we took the decision and why the police came in. It has nothing to do with the NDC, and it was about the assault that had taken place. So, Tamale remains very calm, and I am told the party office has been opened, and things have normalized.”

Northern Regional Police Command has granted bail to Alhaji Abdul Hamid, also known as Alhaji Gbewaa, the Northern Regional Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He was detained over allegations of assaulting Hajia Shamima Yakubu, the NDC Northern Regional Treasurer, during a party executive meeting at the regional office.

Alhaji Gbewaa turned himself in at the Regional Police Headquarters in Tamale on Monday, January 15, after being declared wanted by the police. Following his detention, supporters of the NDC gathered at the police station to welcome him upon his release on Monday afternoon.

Prior to his release, a group of disgruntled NDC members in the Northern Region protested the arrest by locking up the party’s regional office.

Wearing red armbands, the group stormed offices at the regional headquarters with wood and padlocks, issuing a warning to lock down NDC offices in various constituencies until the Vice Chairman was released from police custody.

The Vice Chairman, arrested on January 15, faced accusations of assaulting the NDC regional treasurer, Hajia Shamima, during a regional executive meeting. The incident resulted in visible injuries to the treasurer, leading her to report the assault to the police and seek medical care.

In response to the incident, the NDC released a statement condemning the attack on the northern regional party treasurer and called for calm.

NDC members vow to ‘sacrifice’ their firstborns if they sell out their party in the 2024 elections

A shocking video has emerged online showing some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) swearing an oath of loyalty to the party with a sword, ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows former Director of Elections for the NDC, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, and several others, pledging to remain faithful to the party and its agenda, or face death and the loss of their first born children.

The oath swearing was led by a man in white, who held a sword and made Mr Ankrah and the others repeat after him.

The NDC has accused the NPP of destroying the country and failing to deliver on its promises, and has vowed to boot it out of power at all cost.

However, many people who have seen the video have expressed concern about the severity of the oath and the involvement of the children of the party members in something they are not part of.

Some have questioned the legality and morality of the oath, and whether it violates the rights and dignity of the children.

Others have also wondered whether the oath is a sign of desperation or commitment by the NDC, and whether it will have any impact on the outcome of the 2024 election.

According to the Electoral Commission of Ghana, the 2024 general election is scheduled to be held on 7 December, to elect the president and members of parliament.

The NDC and the NPP are the two dominant parties in Ghanaian politics, having alternated in power since the return to multiparty democracy in 1992.

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, holds the belief that assigning the responsibility of resolving Ghana’s economic challenges to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would significantly benefit the country.

In his view, the most suitable leader to address the country’s economic woes is the Vice President.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV, Atta Akyea dismissed the notion that Dr. Bawumia, as the head of the economic management team, should bear blame for the economic difficulties.

He argued that economic decisions are made by the President, not solely by the Vice President.

Expressing his confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s capabilities, Atta Akyea stated, “This is the first time Ghana is going to have a president who is an economist, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“If the problem of Ghana now and people are talking about its seriousness, I agree to a reasonable extent that the economy is not in its best form. When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist? Ghana will be in a safer pair of hands when we bring Dr. Bawumia.”

He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, as an economist, is well-equipped to handle the economic challenges facing the country and criticized attributing all economic issues to him as “cruel and vile propaganda.”

“This is the first time Ghana is going to have a president who is an economist, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist? Ghana will be in a safer pair of hands when we bring Dr. Bawumia.”

“Ghana is going to get a man with shock absorbers, the finest gentleman, to help us solve a major problem facing us, the economy. He was in a very serious adversary role, which is what people don’t want to see. It’s cruel and vile propaganda for everybody to say that let’s place all the economic woes of Akufo-Addo on Dr. Bawumia. It’s unkind,” he said.

VIDEO: “May I die and my first born also die in my place” if I betray NDC! – Party members swear in viral video

Anti-corruption bodies under my tenure will operate independently – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his determination to ensure that officials of the current administration engaged in corrupt practices are held responsible for their actions, should he be re-elected as president.

He emphasized that even within his prospective administration, individuals involved in corruption would not be exempt from accountability.

Addressing the audience at the Volta Regional House of Chiefs on January 17, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer expressed concern about the need for a fair approach to combating corruption, highlighting the potential threat it poses to the nation if not addressed appropriately.

Mahama noted that lip service often replaces genuine efforts in addressing corruption issues, and he criticized the constraints placed on anti-corruption institutions, hindering them from fulfilling their mandates independently.

“If we do not establish fairness in our system in fighting corruption, it will overwhelm this country, A lot of times, lip service is paid to it.

“The anti-corruption institutions are fettered and are not able to dispense their mandate independently and unhindered,” John Mahama said.

He added “We will hold people in this government who have misconducted themselves accountable, but same time as we hold them accountable, people who misconduct themselves in our administration will face the full rigours of the law, the anti-corruption institutions will come after them, and I am not going to interfere in the work of these institutions if they are investigating you.”

NDC Northern Regional Vice Chair suspended for assault of Treasurer

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended its Northern Regional Vice-Chairman, Alhaji Gbewaa, following discussions between national and regional executives in Accra.

The suspension comes in the wake of reported aggression by Alhaji Gbewaa towards Hajia Shamima Yakubu at the party’s regional secretariat. The altercation allegedly stemmed from heated disagreements over party finances during the weekend.

Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News, clarified that Alhaji Gbewaa “has been suspended for three months.”

Mr Gbande said this is “pending investigations and all other processes that will enable the party to look into the issues properly for a final redress.”

Following a heated altercation during a pivotal stakeholder meeting last weekend, the Northern Regional Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Gbewaa, was involved in an incident that resulted in injuries to the Northern Regional Treasurer’s face.

Subsequently, Gbewaa was arrested but later released on bail. The aftermath of this incident saw his supporters expressing discontent by locking up the regional party office in protest.

In response to the escalating tensions and as part of urgent efforts to address internal divisions, NDC executives held a meeting in Accra to deliberate on the matter.

Court grants bail to NDC Vice Chairman who allegedly assaulted Regional Treasurer

The Northern Regional Police Command has released on bail Alhaji Abdul Hamid, also known as Alhaji Gbewaa, who serves as the Northern Regional Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This decision comes after he was detained on allegations of assaulting Hajia Shamima Yakubu, the NDC Northern Regional Treasurer, during a party executive meeting at the regional office.

Alhaji Gbewaa voluntarily surrendered at the Regional Police Headquarters in Tamale on Monday, January 15, after being declared wanted by the police.

Upon his release on Monday afternoon, party supporters gathered at the police station to welcome him.

Prior to his release, a group of discontented NDC members in the Northern Region protested the arrest by locking up the party’s regional office.

Wearing red armbands, the group stormed offices at the regional headquarters with wood and padlocks. They issued a warning to lock down NDC offices in Tamale Central, Tamale South, Tamale North, and Sagnarigu constituencies until the Vice Chairman was released from police custody.

The Vice Chairman, arrested on January 15, faced accusations of assaulting the NDC regional treasurer, Hajia Shamima, during a regional executive meeting.

The incident left the treasurer visibly injured, leading her to report to the police and seek medical care. In response, the NDC released a statement condemning the attack on the northern regional party treasurer and called for calm.

  • Reforms needed for Ghana’s local government system – Dr Akwetey

Reforms needed for Ghana’s local government system – Dr Akwetey

Executive Director of IDEG, Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, calls for urgent attention to address public dissatisfaction with the local government system in Ghana, citing concerns about its failure to meet basic needs and growing calls for military intervention.

During a panel discussion at the 75th Annual New Year School and Conference (ANYSC), Dr. Akwetey emphasizes the perceived shortcomings of the current local government system, particularly its failure to address issues like corruption and poverty. He warns of a threat to the country’s democracy and advocates for reforms.

IDEA proposes reforms, including the establishment of a Council for Local Development and Governance (CLDG) to integrate traditional leaders, and the introduction of the Mixed Member Proportional Representation system (MMPR) for better representation of marginalized groups in local governance.

Dr. Akwetey criticizes the existing winner-takes-all system, with the dominance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting that political leaders prioritize capturing power over true stewardship.

He highlights the concentration of control in the hands of these two parties, fueled by Article 55(3) of the constitution, preventing political parties from participating in local governance.

Dr. Akwetey stresses the need to address systemic problems in the local government to create an environment for political and economic transformation.

Professor Atsu Ayee, a former Dean at the University of Ghana, supports the call for a party-based local government system, citing the current fragmented and non-viable nature of the system.

He emphasized the importance of building strong institutions to tackle challenges associated with the existing local government structure.

Akufo-Addo is doing his best as a president – Atta Akyea

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has lauded President Akufo-Addo for his performance amid numerous challenges encountered during his tenure.

Akyea highlighted the president’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, unique challenges not faced by his predecessors.

He specifically praised President Akufo-Addo for implementing the free Senior High School policy, emphasizing its significant future benefits.

The MP also acknowledged the initiation of constructing a hospital in every district as a noteworthy achievement.

Speaking on the government’s performance during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, Akyea defended

Akufo-Addo against claims of underperformance, attributing the challenges to the global impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He commended the president’s governance achievements, emphasizing the importance of free education and the ambitious healthcare infrastructure development.

“I don’t think he [Akufo-Addo] has underperformed. What I believe is that he has had a lot of trouble. People underrate the power of COVID-19. President Nkrumah never faced that. The Russia-Ukraine war, of which the evidence is conclusive, the cold fact that economies contracted because of this situation.”

“I think that President Akufo-Addo has been a bad storyteller too. There is no president in this realm called Ghana who said people should go to secondary school for free. You think it is cheap. Even if it is not perfect, given the foundation for this nation to take off in terms of serious brain power in the next 20 years. I have not heard of any president who said every district should have a hospital. These are not low-cost governance achievements,” he stated.

  • The ‘most difficult vocation’ in politics is being an MP – Atta Akyea

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has characterized being an MP as one of the most challenging roles in politics.

The former Minister for Works and Housing expressed concern about the substantial and unconventional responsibilities that accompany the position.

During an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Atta Akyea lamented the constant individual demands placed on MPs by their constituents, often at the expense of collective development and progress.

Describing the situation, he stated, “As if you [MPs] were called to solve mass poverty,” emphasizing the persistent demands from constituents across the country.

Reflecting on his own experience, Atta Akyea suggested that after 16 years, it might be a suitable time to retire from such a demanding role.

He highlighted the unique challenges faced by Members of Parliament, describing it as the most arduous vocation in politics.

He noted the continuous individual demands on MPs by their constituencies, citing examples such as being asked to purchase a coffin for a family in connection with a deceased individual they may not even know.

“As if you [MPs] were called to solve mass poverty,” Mr. Atta Akyea bemoned the unceasing demands of constituents across the country.

“I believe 16 years is a good enough time to hang up your gloves. I am not a young man. There is no more serious undertaking in politics than to become a Member of Parliament. I believe becoming a Member of Parliament is the most difficult vocation anybody can pursue; as if you were called to solve mass poverty, incessant individual demands on the MP by the constituency.”

“For example, how do you feel about buying a coffin for a family in relation to a deceased individual you don’t even know?”

Individuals blaming Bawumia for Ghana’s challenges are cruel – Atta Akyea

The Member of Parliament representing the Akim Abuakwa South constituency, Samuel Atta Akyea, has voiced criticism against those attributing Ghana’s economic challenges to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Acknowledging the economic downturn, Atta Akyea defended Dr. Bawumia, describing the situation as ‘unkind’ and ‘cruel’ to hold the vice president responsible for the issues in the Akufo-Addo government.

Atta Akyea emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, being in a serious adversary role, faced constraints in making sensitive decisions for the country.

Atta Akyea underscored the importance of electing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer in the December polls to bring about positive changes in the country’s fortunes.

He lauded Dr. Bawumia as a distinguished gentleman with ‘shock absorbers’ ready to serve the nation.

“This is the first time Ghana is going to have a president who is an economist, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. If the problem of Ghana now and people are talking about its seriousness, I agree to a reasonable extent that the economy is not in its best form. When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist? Ghana will be in a safer pair of hands when we bring Dr. Bawumia.”

Expressing concern about the economic challenges, Atta Akyea drew a parallel, stating, “When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist?” He advocated for placing trust in Dr. Bawumia, an economist set to become Ghana’s first president with such credentials.

Addressing the criticism against the vice president, Atta Akyea denounced it as “cruel and vile propaganda” to lay all of Akufo-Addo’s economic burdens on Dr. Bawumia.

During an interview on Face to Face, on Citi TV, Atta Akyea expressed doubt in the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) ability to manage the government’s educational policy, free Senior High Schools (SHS), citing concerns that they didn’t initiate the program.

In the upcoming presidential election, Vice President Bawumia is vying for the presidency, challenging former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, who seeks re-election.

This act is in protest against the detention of the Northern Regional Vice Chairman, Alhaji Gbewa, who was held by the Northern Regional Police Command.

Alhaji Gbewa was invited by the police to assist in investigations following a report of assault filed by the party’s Regional Treasurer, Shamima Yakubu.

The alleged altercation between the Vice Chairman and the Treasurer, involving disagreements about party finances, led to injuries sustained by Ms. Yakubu.

The communication officer of the youth group, Mahama Haruna, emphasised their resistance to any party sanctions against Alhaji Gbewa.

He urged the National Party Executives to inquire into the recurring disagreements within the party’s northern regional branch, often associated with Shamima Yakubu.

More time should be devoted to doing the right thing from day one – Economist tells NDC

Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and Economist, Godfred Bokpin has advised the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to promptly address key issues if they emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.

He emphasized the need for a reduction in the size of the government and a limitation on the number of ministers to 40 as one of the primary actions to be taken.

Mr Bokpin highlighted the urgency of addressing pressing national issues promptly upon assuming power.

“Some time can be devoted to reviewing the past. Yes, we will do that but more time should be devoted to doing the right thing from day one. There cannot be any longer honeymoon.”

On JoyNews’ AM Show, Godfred Bokpin expressed that given former President John Mahama’s previous experience as president, he should be capable of implementing changes and improvements swiftly.

He cautioned against blaming the current government for the country’s problems, as it could lead to disaffection among the people.

“So we will need to court both the opposition and then your own people along a certain path. Without that, you may not be able to carry through the structural reforms, which will be very painful. There will be too much division.”

He added that, the development of Ghana should be a unifying force, rather than something that divides the people

“Development must be about people, preserve our planet earth and peace. So the development that divides Ghanaians is not development. We want development that brings Ghanaians together as one people regardless of our tribal affiliations.”

  • Haruna Iddrisu’s supporters allegedly threaten to punish Mahama in 2024 over his ‘demotion’

Haruna Iddrisu’s supporters allegedly threaten to punish Mahama in 2024 over his ‘demotion’

A video of the former Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, dancing to a northern ethnic song has sparked controversy on social media, as an NPP activist claims that the NDC northern caucus is deeply divided and unhappy with John Mahama.

The video, which was posted by @Gen_Buhari, an NPP activist, on Twitter, shows Hon. Iddrisu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tamale-South, dancing and smiling at a public event.

However, the caption of the video suggests that the MP is not happy with the NDC leadership, especially the former President and flagbearer, John Mahama, who is seeking to contest the 2024 elections.

“The NDC northern caucus is deeply divided, the supporters of Haruna Iddrisu have vowed to punish John Mahama in the 2024 elections, its this same issue that led to the attack on Chairman Azoka and the Northern Regional Treasurer, Haruna Iddrissu’s demotion at Parliament is the worse mistake NDC did and they’ll be punished mercilessly for that, you can’t hate Dagombas and expect their votes in election. Interesting times ahead,” the caption reads.

This post has elicited diverse responses on Twitter, with some endorsing the claim and others dismissing it as mischief and propaganda.

One of the comments, written by @Arena_Odd, said: “I have not been seeing Haruna Iddrisu at any NDC gathering off late.” To which @Gen_Buhari replied in Ghanaian pidgin English: “He vex waaaa”, meaning he is very angry.

@Gen_Buhari alleged that the NDC northern caucus, especially the supporters of Hon. Iddrisu, who is a Dagomba, have vowed to punish John Mahama, who is a Gonja, in the 2024 elections, by either voting for the NPP or boycotting the polls. He said that the NDC cannot expect to win the votes of the Dagombas.

Despite these allegations, some Twitter users have questioned the credibility and legitimacy of the information provided by @Gen_Buhari, suggesting it might be part of the NPP’s propaganda to create division within the NDC, especially as the 2024 elections approach.

Govt set to resume stalled infrastructure projects – Ofori-Atta

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has announced that stalled infrastructure projects across Ghana, funded by donors, are set to resume in the coming weeks.

The restart is based on agreements reached with Ghana’s bilateral creditors regarding the restructuring of the country’s debt.

Ofori-Atta shared this information on PM EXPRESS BUSINESS EDITION with host George Wiafe, scheduled to air on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

The Finance Minister explained that as negotiations with donors progress, some will begin disbursing necessary funds for the halted projects.

A Memorandum of Understanding is expected to be signed with bilateral creditors in the coming days after reaching a deal on debt restructuring.

“Some of these donors have demonstrated their commitment to support the economy once issues around these debt restructuring are resolved” the Finance Minister added.

Ofori-Atta highlighted the commitment of some donors to support Ghana’s economy once debt restructuring matters are resolved.

The Finance Minister addressed concerns from certain donors, such as China, regarding the cutoff date for debt restructuring, noting that an agreement was reached with the Paris Club and China, setting December 2022 as the cutoff date.

Regarding the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, Ofori-Atta shared that Ghana has fulfilled requirements for the first review, anticipating a disbursement of about $600 million to the Bank of Ghana next week.

He revealed that the second tranche of the IMF cash would be directed toward projects outlined in the budget, indicating a shift from previous programs where all funds were focused on balancing payments.

Ofori-Atta emphasized that the incoming funds would enhance the Bank of Ghana’s reserves, stabilizing the Ghana cedis. He expressed optimism about similar responses from other donors, contributing significantly to the country’s economic recovery.

The Finance Minister concluded by assuring that the government would maintain fiscal discipline during an election year, completing necessary actions for economic stability.
