Former President John Mahama is urging Ghanaians, with a particular emphasis on trade and labor groups, to consider affording him a grace period should he successfully reclaim power.
This appeal arises in light of the heightened calls for enhanced conditions of service from these organizations.
Addressing attendees at a ‘Campus Connect’ event in Hohoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer stressed the importance of allowing time to revive the economy before tackling specific demands.
“And you will realize the harm that the NPP administration has done to Ghana’s economy. This country is broke, and so we will beg you that when we come into office give us a bit of a honeymoon, let’s put things in place so that we bring the economy back onto its feet.”
Mahama emphasized that his party is exercising caution in making promises for the 2024 election, considering the challenges facing the ailing economy.
“And I will plead with the teachers union, GNAT, NAGRAT, UTAG and TEWU and all of them, I know all of you are clamoring for allowances. Let me caution you that in 2025 when we take over we will show you the books and the finances of this country.”
Mr Mahama was speaking during his ‘Building Ghana’ tour of the Volta where he assured that his campaign would not engage in outrageous pledges ahead of the 2024 election.
“And when we have done that we can accede to your demands again, and that’s why I’m being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crises in which this country has been plunged”.
The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently denounced a reported assault on the party’s Northern Regional Treasurer, Hajia Shamima Yakubu.
The party has expressed its disapproval of such irresponsible actions and has committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
In a press statement released on Monday, January 15, and signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party apologised to the victim and assured her of adequate support.
“The NDC takes a very serious view of the conduct of the party officer responsible for the assault, and at the next meeting of its Functional Executive Committee meeting, measures will be taken to address the matter thoroughly to leave no doubt in everyone’s mind that the party does not approve of unlawful acts of assault and battery.”
The NDC also expressed its commitment to the safety of all Ghanaians, emphasising that no one should take the law into their own hands.
“The NDC is committed to ensure that its members adhere strictly to the long-cherished practices that have made our internal politics the enviable attraction of teeming millions of the people of Ghana.”
Hajia Shamima Yakubu was assaulted by a regional party officer of the NDC during a stakeholder meeting in Tamale over the weekend.
The meeting turned chaotic, leading to injuries on Hajia Yakubu’s face, requiring her hospitalization.
Brother of late President, John Evans Atta-Mills, and a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, Samuel Atta-Mills, has questioned President Akufo-Addo over his silence on the autopsy report of Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu, popularly known as JB Danquah.
This follows a call by the former deputy General-Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Samuel Koku Anyidoho, backed by President Akufo-Addo, for the autopsy report of former President John Evans Atta-Mills to be made public.
Mr Anyidoho together with some kinsmen of the late President paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo and appealed to him to ensure that Prof Mills’ autopsy report is made public. According to the delegation that called on the President, there has not been an autopsy report presented to the family even after eleven years of his demise.
Addressing President Akufo-Addo, Nana Enyimfua III who initiated the appeal said “Our biggest problem as a family is that ever since I was enstooled as queenmother, I have not seen any autopsy report in the family. That is the biggest problem I have with the family because if someone asks me what killed him I won’t know if the doctor said he broke his arm or his neck or drunk something.”
“So we plead with you and the government that the family needs the autopsy report so that in future when I am no more queen mother posterity will learn from it because no child from the family knows what killed the late former president not to talk about me the queen mother in the family. So I plead with you on behalf of the family, before you leave office let us get the autopsy report.”
Mr Anyidoho made a similar call which was supported by President Akufo-Addo. This has attracted a reaction from Mr Samuel Atta-Mills, who has since been questioning the rationale for demanding his brother’s autopsy report.
In the wake of the controversy, Mr Atta-Mills has asked President Akufo-Addo to also be concerned about the autopsy report of JB Danquah, a Ghanaian chartered accountant and politician who was murdered in his home in 2016.
He was a member of the Parliament of Ghana for the Abuakwa North on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party between 2005 and 2009, and once more from 2013 until his death.
He was killed on February 9, 2016, at age 50, at his Shiashi Legon Home. Although the suspect in the murder has been apprehended, there has not been any public mention of an autopsy report of JB Danquah.
It is in view of this that Mr Samuel Atta-Mills is asking the President to also be concerned about Mr JB Danquah’s autopsy report as he is concerned with that of late President JEA Mills.
“Wasn’t JB Danquah a sitting Member of Parliament. Has his autopsy report been published?” Mr Atta-Mills questioned.
He also also asked the President and Mr Anyidoho to allow his brother rest in peace.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership has strongly condemned the assault on its Northern Regional Treasurer, Hajia Shamima Yakubu, during a stakeholder meeting in Tamale to discuss the campaign strategy.
The incident occurred over the weekend and resulted in injuries to Hajia Yakubu’s face, leading to her hospitalization.
In a statement dated January 15, 2024, and signed by the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiave Kwetey, the party expressed grave concern over the behavior of the responsible party officer.
The statement assured that at the next meeting of the Functional Executive Committee, comprehensive measures will be taken to address the matter thoroughly, emphasizing the party’s disapproval of unlawful acts of assault and battery.
The NDC underscored its commitment to ensuring that all members adhere strictly to the established practices that have made its internal politics a model for the people of Ghana.
The statement also clarified that reports suggesting the incident occurred in the presence of national executive members, including National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and MP for Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu, are inaccurate.
The party denies such claims, emphasizing the absence of any national executive member during the meeting where the Regional Treasurer was assaulted.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has assured Ghanaians that the recent power outages, reminiscent of the 2015 “Dumsor” crisis, will not become a recurring issue.
The party emphasizes that ‘Dumsor’ is a thing of the past and is dedicated to preventing such widespread power shortages from happening again, as they did during the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
Alfred Thompson, a member of the NPP Communications Team, emphasized the government’s diligent efforts to ensure a consistent power supply for the nation during an interview on The Big Issue on Citi TV.
“We are saying to Ghanaians that it is not a dumsor era and we will never let them go under that challenge in this country again.”
“And that is why we are working assiduously to make sure that the lights are on and that is why we are working assiduously to make sure that the laws are reduced…and we will work in the interest of Ghanaians,” he stated.
The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized his cautious approach to promises in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, citing the current economic challenges as a limiting factor for grand commitments.
Speaking to NDC supporters in Hohoe, Volta Region, Mahama stated, “…I am being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crisis in which this country has been plunged [into]. We will show you the books and finances of this country, and you will realize the harm that the New Patriotic Party administration has done to this country; the economy is broke.”
Mahama also revealed that the next NDC government, if elected, would institute a monthly allowance of GH¢1,000 for all Assembly members. He estimated that this initiative would incur an annual cost of GH¢80 million.
Additionally, he pledged to reduce the budget of the President’s office, currently exceeding GH¢2 billion, to fund the proposed allowances for Assembly members. The announcement came during Mahama’s two-day “Building the Ghana we want together” tour in the Volta Region.
The Paramount Chief of Bator has called upon former President John Mahama, urging him to consider modifying certain provisions of the constitution in the event of winning power.
Togbe Kpatamiah Dzekle VII emphasized that numerous Ghanaians endorse constitutional reforms, suggesting that Mr. Mahama should give consideration to it for the advancement of the country.
The Chief conveyed his message to the audience during the NDC flagbearer’s tour of the Volta Region.
“There are a number of areas in the constitution that need to be looked at again to address pertinent issues confronting this country. I will not go into details. Maybe at an open forum, some members would dash on those areas,” he said.
The traditional leader, who additionally holds the position of Vice President of the National House of Chiefs, recounted that his jurisdiction experienced significant impact due to the Akosombo Dam spillage last year.
The Chiefs also applauded former President John Mahama and his brother Ibrahim Mahama for their assistance in relieving the people during the Akosombo Dam disaster.
“They stood up to the task, came, and supported us. Thank you, Your Excellency. I would like to thank his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Ibrahim Mahama, and his company for equally helping us to reduce or alleviate the suffering of the people”.
Director of International Relations for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alex Segbefia, has praised the Special Prosecutor for apprehending Kofi Owusu Nkansah.
Mr Segbefia, who has since been released, was under suspicion for his alleged involvement in distributing money to delegates before the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) primaries.
During an interview on JoyNews, Mr Segbefia commended the action, viewing it as a positive and forward step for the prosecution regime.
“As far as I am concerned, the Office of the Special Prosecutor is well within his rights. First of all, act on complaints about someone. We are yet to clarify that issue, but if he has a complaint, he is duty-bound to investigate, no matter the outcome. Let me use this opportunity to tell the OSP that he is the leader of a new body that is going to be very difficult for people to stomach. He is already in a difficult position because of the acts that brought him into force and his limited powers due to the attorney general actually having the power,” he said on Newsfile on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
He stressed the significance of maintaining legal standards and ensuring accountability, asserting that the arrest aligns with the principles of justice.
The NDC official also tackled the matter of vote-buying, highlighting that participating in such practices should not be normalized.
Mr Segbefia urged adherence to ethical conduct, highlighting that the actions of a few should not be a justification for others to partake in similar practices.
According to the former Deputy Chief of Staff, despite these obstacles, the Office of the Special Prosecutor must continue to combat corruption.
Mr. Segbefia advised the OSP not to be disheartened by the challenges of combating corruption, which can be a frustrating task.
He urged the OSP to remain focused and committed to its task while urging the public to support the office.
Former President, John Dramani Mahama, has revisited the issue of utilizing motorcycles for commercial purposes, commonly known as the okada business.
The subject was a significant focal point during the 2020 election campaign, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) pledging to legalize it due to its potential for generating employment.
“The okada thing, if we do win, it is going to be in our manifesto again. We are going to regulate it like it has been done in other countries. The riders are going to be taught methods of safe riding,” Mahama affirmed in an interview with TV3.
He posited that unregulated okada use “comes with risks,” adding: “We’ve just behaved like ostriches and buried our heads in the sand but you can’t stop it.
“It is a source of income for many young people…. If we regulate it we can identify every motorbike and every rider and know who is using it for crime,” he added.
A National Democratic Congress (NDC) operative, James Agbey, has cautioned the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, against any attempts to manipulate the upcoming 2024 general elections.
James Agbey asserts that the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, would be the first to face consequences if he attempts to use security forces to intimidate voters in the upcoming 2024 elections.
According to a statement signed by James Agbey, the NDC operative expressed concern over the defence minister’s alleged threat, emphasising that such actions are contradictory to democratic norms.
He went further to interpret the purported threat as a veiled intention to employ the Armed Forces to instigate violence during the electoral process.
“The truth is, there would be dire consequences if Nitiwul and his likes make any wrong move ahead of the 2024 general elections. In fact, Nitiwul will be first to go down if he dares orchestrate election rigging and violence in the forthcoming general election.
“Some of us are ready and willing to defend our democracy. We are ready to face off with the NPP in the event that they use the armed forces to destabilise the 2024 elections,” he said in the statement.
The NDC operative called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is also the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, to intervene immediately and place Nitiwul on a security watch list.
He also urged the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to launch a comprehensive investigation into the video to ensure the integrity of the democratic process.
“I therefore, called on Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to immediately call Dominic Nitiwul to order and place him on a security watch list as threat to democracy ahead of the 2024 general elections.
“I also charged the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation into the Nitiwul Video with a view to nipping this ugly trend in the bud,” the statement added.
The NDC operative remained resolute, stating that the NDC is firm in its bid to take over power in the 2024 elections, citing the support of the majority of Ghanaians for the return of the NDC to government.
Agbey warned against any collaboration between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and elements within the Armed Forces to disrupt the electoral process.
“Let it be on record that whether Nitiwul likes it or not, the NDC will surely take over power in 2024. For emphasis, the majority of Ghanaians are insisting on the return of the NDC to government in 2024, and there’s nothing that is going to stop the momentum that’s building in that regard. The NPP dare not connive with rogue elements in the armed forces to disrupt the 2024 polls.
“As a longstanding operative for the NDC, I can boldly speak of our experiences and know-how, and our resilience to wade off any NPP undemocratic tendencies,” the statement added.
Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to eliminate the 1% electronic levy if he regains power.
He argues that the tax is unjust and hinders citizens from fully embracing the cashless society that the country has been advocating for.
John Mahama said while speaking at the University of Ghana that “it is inequitable tax, it’s not a fair tax, it prevents people from the uptake of our moving towards a cashless society and so when NDC comes, we will remove that tax. I’ve said it bluntly.”
On providing subsidies on data for students, he indicated that there is no problem with the government providing subsidies.
According to John Dramani Mahama, educational institutions should have wifi hotspots in some areas of their campuses so that they can access the internet with ease and that will help in their academics.
“I don’t see anything wrong with the government subsidizing access to wifi for public institutions like the University of Ghana and other educational institutions. There should be hotspots where you can go and stand and do data and then go back and relax.”
Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Ellembele, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has declared that Ghana is currently facing challenges with load shedding.
As a former Minister of Energy and Petroleum, he pointed to recent instances of power outages as clear indications that the era of rolling blackouts, commonly referred to as dumsor, has made a return.
Additionally, he highlighted reports detailing the growing financial strain on state entities within the power production and transmission system, further exacerbating the situation.
“Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) is currently unable to fulfil its payment obligations to the West African Gas Pipeline, which is responsible for transporting gas from Takoradi to Tema for power generation.
“You can also track the ultimate problem to the weakest link in the value chain—ECG’s inability to pay off-takers,” he added.
He urged the government to be transparent about the situation, calling on the Ghana Grid Company to establish a timetable for the current dumsor and provide businesses and households with the means to plan more effectively.
The hashtag #DumsorIsBack has gained traction on Ghana’s social media platforms, with both the president and vice president facing harsh criticism for the prevailing circumstances.
Surprisingly, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), responsible for power distribution, has yet to address the allegations regarding the return of dumsor.
Read the MP’s full post on the return of dumsor:
Ghana is currently grappling with a severe case of Load Shedding, commonlyknown as Dumsor.
The situation is evidently clear, with 500 MW of load being shed as of tonight, January 9th, 2024.
Numerous areas have been plunged into darkness due to the unavailability of gas to fuel thermal plants within the Tema enclave, which can be attributed to financial constraints.
Specifically, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) is currently unable to fulfil its payment obligations to the West African Gas Pipeline, which is responsible for transporting gas from Takoradi to Tema for power generation. You can also track the ultimate problem to the weakest link in the value chain: -ECG’s inability to pay off-takers.
Compounding the situation is the absence of a load-shedding timetable, which hampers households and businesses from planning accordingly.
The lack of transparency and communication regarding the power outage schedule only adds to the frustration and inconvenience experienced by the affected population.
It is worth highlighting that even during the worst periods of Dumsor in the past, the power outage never reached the 500 megawatts threshold currently being shed yet the media associated with the NPP interestingly see this as no “Dumsor.”
Their loud silence on the current situation is deafening.
The Ghana Grid Company must, as a matter of urgency, come out with a load-shedding timetable to allow households and businesses to plan better.
First Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, has raised concerns about the impending primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasizing potential far-reaching implications for Ghana’s Parliament.
Mr Ahmed Ibrahim underscored the significance of closely monitoring the effects of the party’s internal processes on the broader parliamentary landscape.
The decision of 18 incumbent NPP MPs not to seek re-election presents a significant challenge due to the potential loss of institutional memory and expertise.
He pointed specifically to the departure of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, a veteran politician trained by the legendary JH Mensah, as a potential blow to Parliament’s capacity.
“The exit of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu who was trained by J.H Mensah, are you saying it is not going to have a negative impact on parliament, it will. As for representation, you will get somebody to represent you but as for replacement, you cannot replace the institutional memory and capacity of the exiting MP and that is how parliament is going to be negatively affected. We take you, invest in you, and throw you out.”
He further argued that the government’s underutilization of experienced MPs contributes to their decision to leave. Citing examples like Joe Ghartey and Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Ibrahim highlighted their wasted potential and lack of meaningful roles within the government.
“You see Joe Ghartey, you see Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi which post is he holding, zero. Joe Ghartey which post is he holding, zero. I can mention the names of the seniors to you. Joe Ghartey was a former Attorney General and a former deputy speaker but he is there, his party is not using him so he sees himself as being underutilised. And do you think that when that happens he will contest again, he will not.”
“Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi was a law lecturer from Tech, he is here, they left him and took a first-timer as an Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General in those days. Anyimadu-Antwi is still there, a law lecturer, with 16 years in parliament.
Ibrahim urged the government to take proactive steps to retain experienced MPs and tap into their expertise. He emphasized the importance of recognizing their contributions and offering them roles that utilize their skills and knowledge.
National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, widely known as Nana B, has addressed a suggestion urging the NPP to commence preparations for their transition documents in anticipation of the 2024 general elections.
The remark was issued by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who holds the position of National Chairman within the primary opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Nana B remarked that there is no necessity for such preparations, confidently stating that the NDC is destined to lose the 2024 general elections.
During an interview on Peace FM on January 9, 2023, he shared the perspective that Ghanaians have already grown disillusioned with the NDC’s candidate, former president John Dramani Mahama. Consequently, he urged the party to abstain from disseminating misinformation among their supporters.
“NDC has been playing games all along. Yesterday, Asiedu Nketiah addressed the press conference, the same person who claimed NDC won the 2020 election and vowed to go to court. However, he was also the witness who testified, not realizing that their collated results were baseless,” he said.
He continued “NDC will lose this election, and they should be careful not to go and lie to their supporters as they have been doing always because nobody is going to rig any election.”
Highlighting the perceived unpopularity of the NDC’s presidential candidate, Nana B suggested that Ghanaians have grown weary of John Dramani Mahama.
“Ghanaians already know their presidential candidate, and they are no longer interested in him. His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will become the president of this country,” he added.
Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has offered a candid advice to the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, in the lead up of the 2024 general elections.
Ahiagbah suggested that instead of planning for the 2024 general elections, the NDC‘s flagbearer and former President John Dramani Mahama should consider preparing for retirement.
In a direct message to Asiedu Nketiah, Ahiagbah emphasized the significance of looking towards the future and making strategic decisions for the party.
The statement implies a belief that Mahama’s political career should come to an end, prompting discussions about the NDC’s leadership and its approach to the upcoming elections.
As the political landscape evolves, the NPP’s communication director has positioned retirement as a consideration for Mahama, adding a layer of speculation to the dynamics leading up to the 2024 general elections.
The statement reflects the ongoing discourse surrounding political figures and their roles in shaping the future of their respective parties.
He has made a projection concerning the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s performance in the upcoming elections. Ahiagbah anticipates that the NDC will face defeat in this year’s elections, adding to the political speculation surrounding the competitive landscape leading up to the polls.
He was reacting to Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s comment that the NPP administration should start preparing their handing over notes.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Monday, January 8, Mr Asiedu Nketiah said “They will fail because no power can defeat an organized and determined people struggling for their freedom. Truth is, Ghanaians have already abandoned the NPP and their followers. Therefore, the NPP ministers must begin preparing their handing over notes.
“Already, thousands of persons affiliated to the NPP have lost the District Level Elections. Yes, NPP people have miserably lost the Assembly and Unit Committee elections to members, supporters, and affiliates of the NDC.”
He added, “Ashanti and Eastern regions were also very impressive for the NDC compared to 2019 performance. Presently, even though the Electoral Commission unexpectedly postponed voting in some electoral areas in these two stronghold regions of the ruling NPP, NDC members and affiliates secured 34.13% and 45.52% of the electoral areas in Ashanti and Eastern regions respectively.”
But responding to him, the Director of Communication of the NPP Richard Ahiagbah, said the 2024 general election is about programmes and policies and not subtle ‘threats of violence’ and ‘vain’ innuendos.
He said the elections are about which candidate has the best policies and programmes to manage the economy. To him, the flagbearer of his party, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is next to lead the country ‘with humility, capacity, and the fear of God to unleash Ghana’s production potential to benefit all Ghanaians’.
In a statement he posted on his X platform, Mr Ahiagbah said “NDC should not get it twisted. We have seen you this confident and boastful before. Please note, Chairman Mosquito, where we have gotten to as people or a democracy, it is not simply a question of it is my turn or to propagate hardship. No no no…..Chairman. It is about programs and policies, not subtle threats of violence and vain innuendos. Bawumia is next to lead with humility, capacity and the fear of God to unleash Ghana’s production potential to benefit of all Ghanaians.
It is possible. There are difficulties to do with the economy, and it is the same globally. But it is coming back, and you know it. But regarding your suggestion to the NPP, respectfully Chairman, I think you should be the one preparing for retirement on 7th Dec 2024; because it will be your LAST DANCE, and it will end in defeat. So chill, Sir!
“I make you this promise Sir, the elections will be free and fair….Pls stop seeing the ghosts of your past electoral ways & means in your dream. I wish you a humble new year.”
Ghanaian businessman, Nana Kwame Bediako, widely recognized as Cheddar and the driving force behind the #TheNewForce movement, has engaged in a meeting with the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.
This development comes in the aftermath of the government’s eleventh-hour decision to cancel the “The Convention” event scheduled for January 7, 2024, at the Independence Square. The event, which had anticipated the presence of prominent African political figures as speakers, faced an abrupt cancellation by the government.
The government, in its clarification, acknowledged that it halted the pre-planned and paid-for event due to an “unexpected State Event scheduled to occur at the venue.”
In the letter, signed on behalf of the Chief of Staff by the Chief Director at the Jubilee House, H. M. Wood, it also added that the booking fee of GH¢10,000 would be refunded to the unnamed organizer of the said programme.
“We write to revoke immediate the permission granted per our letter No.OP/PH/02 dated 11th November, 2023, which approved your request to use the Black Star Square for the above event.
“This decision has been necessitated by an unforeseen State Event scheduled to take place at the venue,” portions of the letter, titled, ‘Revocation of Permit,’ read.
Dignitaries billed to be at the event were former Nigerian independent presidential aspirant, Peter Obi; President of the Economic Freedom Fighters of South Africa, Julius Malema; one-time Director of the Kenya School of Law, P.L.O Lumumba; and former Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States, Arikana Chihombori-Quao.
Following this, it has emerged that Cheddar, the brain behind the event, met with John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer, together with some of the dignitaries who were billed to speak at the Black Star Line Festival.
In a tweet shared by Dele Momodou, of Ovation International, he shared photos of the meeting of Cheddar, with P.L.O Lumumba and others, with the former president and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama.
“After the aborted gathering of radical African leaders, (including Timi Frank, Prof. PLO Lumumba, Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao and Freedom Jacob Caeser) invited by NANA KWAME BEDIAKO (aka CHEDDAR) to meet in Accra, Ghana for the launch of the New African Convention movement, some of the leaders today met with former PRESIDENT JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA, the NDC Presidential candidate in the DECEMBER 7, 2024, elections in Ghana…
“It is not clear if CHEDDAR has decided to throw his full weight behind His Excellency JOHN MAHAMA…,” he wrote in his post.
Musicians including Efya, Stonebwoy and Wiyaala were also billed to perform at the event which was canceled at the last minute.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unequivocally expressed its opposition to the Electoral Commission’s decision not to use indelible ink in the upcoming 2024 elections.
Speaking at a press brief on Monday January 8, 2024, at the party’s headquarters, National Chairman for the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, emphasized that discontinuing the use of indelible ink at this juncture poses a significant risk, potentially opening the floodgates for nefarious activities that could compromise the integrity of Ghana’s elections.
The party contends that the visibility and physical verification provided by indelible ink are essential safeguards against fraudulent practices.
Addressing the media, Mr Asiedu Nketiah noted that, “Let me be abundantly clear one more time that the NDC is diametrically opposed to the Electoral Commission decision not to use indelible ink during the election 2024.”
The party insists that relying solely on Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) introduces vulnerabilities, as these devices can fail, thus jeopardizing the electoral process.
The NDC’s strong stance is rooted in its conviction that indelible ink offers an additional layer of verification that complements biometric verification.
The party argues that the visible and physical verification provided by indelible ink acts as a crucial fail-safe in the event of any BVD failure, ensuring the overall integrity of the electoral process.
As Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections, Mr Asiedu Nketiah has called on national stakeholders and faith-based organisations to channel their energies towards advocating against the EC’s decision not to use indelible ink during the election.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to identify and bring to book persons responsible for the killing of eight individuals during the 2020 general elections.
The party, through its National Chairman, announced its unwavering commitment to uncover and bring to justice those responsible for the killings at a press brief on January 8, 2024.
At the press brief, he bemoaned the failure of the current administration to address the matter. He noted that his party will therefore go after the said perpetrators.
“You can run but you can’t hide,” he said.
has declared that the party will not extend congratulations to President Akufo-Addo following his 2020 victory.
His remark is in response to the President’s claim during a speech delivered ahead of theConstitution Daycelebration that former President John Dramani Mahama is yet to congratulate him after four years of winning the election.
Although the former President has come out to refute the claim, the Leadership of the NDC has defended the party’s stance on not congratulating the President.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah, at a press brief held on Monday, January 8, 2024, in commemoration of Constitution Day, noted that the NDC will not congratulate individuals who resort to murder as a means to secure political power in Ghana.
“We will not congratulate anybody who murders Ghanaians to secure power,” Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said.

“We will not congratulate anybody who murders Ghanaians to secure power,” Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said.
Addressing the media, Nketiah expressed deep concern over the alleged use of violence in the pursuit of political objectives.
He emphasized that the NDC, as a party committed to democratic principles, condemns any form of violence or harm inflicted on Ghanaians for political gain.
He further noted that the NDC will fish out and bring to book petrators of the December 7, 2020, elections which resulted in the loss of eight lives.
In a fiery accusation, former President John Dramani Mahama has pointed fingers at President Nana Akufo-Addo, alleging the deployment of thugs and rogues to disrupt the voting process.
Mahama, expressing deep concern, issued a stern caution, urging Akufo-Addo to cease such actions immediately.
“The use of thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies to disrupt elections in some parts of the country as occurred in the 2020 elections, leading to the loss of eight (8) lives, will forever be remembered as Ghana’s day of infamy and an indelible blemish on our democratic credentials established over the last 31 years of constitutional rule,” he said.
Mr Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), made these allegations in a statement to mark Constitutional Day on Sunday, 7 January 2024.
He further critcised the President for failing to condemn that: “On a rather sad note, it is unconscionable that three years after these tragic events, our President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families. The perpetrators of these murders continue to walk as free men and still hold on to positions of authority and power.”
Director of Communications at the seat of Ghana’s presidency, Eugene Arhin, has vehemently refuted the allegations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Mahama had raised concerns about the death of eight individuals during the 2020 elections, prompting a robust denial from Arhin.
The director dismissed the claims as inaccurate and deceptive.
Eugene Arhin criticized the former president for his claim that President Akufo-Addo failed to condemn the deaths linked to the December 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
In the said video, the president condemned the regrettable deaths resulting from post-electoral violence in Odododiodio and Techiman during the general elections.
“I condemn in no uncertain terms the isolated incidents of post-electoral violence in Odododiodio and Techiman that led to a few regrettable deaths. May their souls rest in peace. We must work to avoid the repetition of such events in the future.
“This statement was made by President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, 9th December 2020, at his Nima residence, after being declared the winner of the 2020 elections,” the news report quoted the director of communications at the presidency.
“…Former President Mahama’s claims that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families” is simply not true. He should, therefore, do the needful and congratulate President Akufo-Addo on his victory in 2020, the post by the director of communications at the presidency further read.
In a speech on Sunday, January 7, 2024, Mahama had alleged that President Akufo-Addo failed to address or offer sympathy for the eight lives lost during the election-related disturbances in 2020.
Mahama called on the government to refrain from undermining democratic rights and criticised the use of thugs and rogue elements in disrupting elections.
“I urge the current government to refrain from actions that continue to undermine democratic rights under their administration. The use of thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies to disrupt elections in some parts of the country as occurred in the 2020 elections, leading to the loss of eight (8) lives, will forever be remembered as Ghana’s day of infamy and an indelible blemish on our democratic credentials established over the last 31 years of constitutional rule, Mahama said in his statement.
“On a rather sad note, it is unconscionable that three years after these tragic events, our President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families. The perpetrators of these murders continue to walk as free men and still hold on to positions of authority and power,” Mahama added.
Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has disclosed a crucial approach the party plans to implement in preparation for the upcoming general elections in December.
During an appearance on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, Mustapha Gbande asserts that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has let down Ghanaians by not fulfilling its promises over the course of the past eight years.
He noted that the NDC plans to replay the NPP’s unfulfilled promises as a reminder to the public of the government’s ineffectiveness.
“We’re coming into government in 2024. We’ll hold the government accountable, and we’ll play back the government’s failed promises to Ghanaians. We’ll playback the inconsistencies,” Mustapha Gbande shared.
He stressed that the current leadership of the party is proficient and vibrantly working towards their victory in the upcoming elections.
Touching on who will be selected as running mate to flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, the deputy secretary said a vast number of people in the party have been trained for the purpose, and these individuals are currently lobbying for the position.
However, the decision lies with the flagbearer to nominate a suitable mate who is capable of supporting him.
“Many people have been groomed for a time like this. They have shown interest; they’re lobbying and engaging, but when you lobby, you’ll come to a position where people must select, and people must agree that they must balance region and experience; they must balance the person’s experience that he brings to the table. His width to be able to help the president because the vice president is the closest to the president; that’s why Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia can never exonerate himself from the ills of President Akufo-Addo.”
“So, the time will come when his Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the man Ghanaians are going to trust as the president, will choose one person, and we in the NDC will rally around him and get Ghanaians to rally around that individual to support the flagbearer to bring the NDC into government,” he said.
The specific individual, Mr. Gbande, did not mention. Nonetheless, he said that a lot of people are on the list, including himself, because he is of the view that the party needs young people to put in ‘young energy.’ But it is dependent on the elders to appoint who is qualified for the role, depending on the selection criteria.
He asserted that John Mahama has been given the mandate and ample time to select his trusted running mate, which will be announced soon.

A state burial service is currently taking place at the forecourt of the State House on January 5, 2024, in honour of the late Enoch Teye Mensah, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo Prampram and ex-Minister of Sports, who passed away in October 2023.
During the commemorative anniversary of the 2023 edition of the 31st December Revolution in Accra, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the party to undertake a thorough house cleaning.
He alleges that there is significant decadence within the main opposition party.
Kwetey, speaking at the event, emphasised that the NDC’s challenges surpass those of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“There is real decay and that decay continues to be in the NDC today. So, I don’t want us, the NDC, to pretend that December 31 is simply a day to bash the NPP; (the) NPP is not the issue; the issue is bigger than the NPP.
“The decay even within the NDC must stop with that blazing fire and that is what this business is about,” a charged Kwetey submitted.
He stressed that unless the NDC rids itself of internal decay, the 2024 victory will be meaningless.

“It is in vain if we win power only to continue what we see, only to do some of the things that we are seeing and only to claim we are doing less; that is not enough,” he cautioned.
On the commemoration of the second coming into office of former President Jerry John Rawlings as a military leader on December 31, 1981, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey’s comments have stirred excitement from former Deputy General Secretary Samuel Koku Anyidoho.
In response to Kwetey’s assertion that the NDC needed to address internal issues, Anyidoho suggested that his previous expulsion from the party was a result of making similar calls.
He challenged the current chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the party’s leader, John Dramani Mahama, to take comparable action against Kwetey.
Anyidoho pointed out that Asiedu Nketiah, as the former party scribe, supervised the process that led to his expulsion for alleged anti-party conduct.
“Let the Chairman and the Leader of the NDC dare come out and sack the General Secretary if they have the “balls” to do so,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Members of the Ghanaian Parliament, where ET Mensah served for about a decade, including the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and legislators from both the minority and majority caucuses, have also joined the service.
On January 4, 2024, the late ET Mensah’s body was laid in state at his Prampram residence.

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has asserted vindication for his stance on the party’s moral decline under the present leadership.
Pointing to a recent acknowledgment by NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey that the party needed internal reforms, Samuel Koku Anyidoho implied that his alleged dismissal from the party was a consequence of advocating for similar changes.
He issued a challenge to the current chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the party’s leader, John Dramani Mahama, urging them to undertake similar actions against Kwetey. Anyidoho pointed out that Asiedu Nketiah, in his previous role as the party scribe, supervised the proceedings that resulted in Anyidoho’s expulsion for anti-party conduct.

A renowned prophet hailing from Sierra Leone, Elijah A. M. Conteh, has shared intriguing insights regarding the anticipated outcome of Ghana’s highly anticipated 2024 presidential elections.
In a momentous New Year Watch Night Service hosted by the Revival Power Ministries Worldwide, Elijah A. M. Conteh delivered a specific prophecy, foreseeing the victory of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming election.
Conteh’s comments have sparked curiosity and speculation among political enthusiasts who eagerly await further developments in this unfolding narrative.
During the New Year Watch Night Service at the Revival Power Ministries Worldwide, Elijah A. M. Conteh not only prophesied the triumph of the NDC party in Ghana’s upcoming election but also pinpointed the date of the declaration as December 10, 2024.
Significantly, this proclamation is slated to unfold just three days after the nation’s general elections on December 7, injecting an added layer of anticipation and intrigue into the political narrative.
“I see a party like the NDC in Ghana celebrating an election; I don’t know whether the election is for [sic] but I saw the date 10th of December 2024.
“I saw an announcement being made, 10th of December, NDC party, whoever their flagbearer is, let them just pray and work well. There is light at the end of the tunnel and God will cause us all to enjoy peace across the nations of the world,” he told his congregation.
The 2024 presidential race will be Maham’s fourth straight jab at the seat. Mahama’s loss in 2016 against Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ended with his concession of defeat and even though he contested the 2020 loss in court, the party relied on multiple results by the Electoral Commission and did not file any base documents (pink sheets).
In the 2024 vote, he will come up against Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and other candidates in the race to succeed Akufo-Addo.
The Sierra Leonean pastor becomes the fourth to make public pronouncements on the upcoming elections.
Zambian apostle, Dr Elijah Kofi King, the head pastor of the Fire Nation Arena Ministries, also prophesied that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is led by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, would be booted out of government come December 7, 2024.
In a viral video of his 2024 prophecies, Apostle Kofi King said that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which is led by former President John Dramani Mahama, will win the 2024 polls.
Speaking to his congregation in Lusaka, Zambia, the pastor indicated that there is no way the NPP will remain in power after the presidential election.
“In the year 2024, the National Democratic Congress of Ghana, led by President John Dramani Mahama… what I can say is that they have won.
“NDC, ‘omu afa’. NDC would win the 2024 election without any doubt. Praise the name of the Lord,” he said.
Apostle Kofi King is the second popular Ghanaian prophet who has prophesied that the NDC would win the 2024 presidential election.
Prophet Nigel Gaisie, the founder and leader of the Prophetic Hill Chapel, has also prophesied that former President Mahama would win the 2024 polls.
Prophet Emmanuel Badu Kobi also predicted that the election would enter a runoff but ultimately the NDC would emerge victorious.
The leader and founder of Alive Chapel International, Archbishop Elisha Salifu Amoako, has, however, prophesied that the 2024 presidential election would be heading for a run-off.
Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has affirmed the significance of Ghanaian voters, assuring them that their ballots will hold weight in the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024.
Emphasizing the necessity for a change, former President John Dramani Mahama declares that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is committed to safeguarding the votes of the Ghanaian people.
“Change is coming! I am confident that together we will change the direction of this country – THIS YEAR – on December 7, 2024, and build a brighter future for Ghana. A future you will be proud of. Let me assure you that your votes will count because we shall protect and secure them,” he said in a New Year speech.
John Dramani. Mahama used the opportunity to call on the people of Ghana to support him build a more prosperous nation.
“By working together, we shall overcome our challenges and build a more prosperous and inclusive nation. I call on all of you to join me in this endeavour. Lend your support and actively engage with my outlined vision. This call to national duty is bigger than any individual interest,” he said.
Furious supporters of Alhaji Nuhu Zaruk, a contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries for the Bimbilla constituency, have unleashed havoc by vandalizing the party’s office.
Chaos erupted at the constituency office on the evening of Tuesday, January 2, 2024, as fervent supporters demanded explanations regarding the removal of Alhaji Zaruk’s name from the vetting list in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries for the Bimbilla constituency.
Seeking justification for the omission, the disgruntled supporters congregated at the constituency office, vocalizing their dissatisfaction and issuing threats to set the party office on fire unless Alhaji Zaruk’s name is promptly reinstated.
The situation escalated as they burned tires and threw stones at the office, prompting the intervention of the military to disperse the agitated supporters.
Meanwhile, the vetting of the aspirants starts today.
The Hohoe Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has enforced disciplinary measures, ousting Ibrahim Abass, a branch member.
Abass faced expulsion over allegations of supporting Mr. John Peter Amewu, a Member of Parliament affiliated with the rival New Patriotic Party (NPP), during the nomination filing process. The expulsion underscores the party’s commitment to maintaining internal allegiance and discipline within its ranks.
The dismissal of Ibrahim Abass from the Hohoe Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was officially communicated through a letter signed by Mr. Newton Darkey, the Constituency Chairman. Dated 26/12/2023, the letter formalized the decision and copies were distributed to key figures, including the Volta Regional Chairman, Ward Coordinators, and Branch Executives. This administrative move highlights the structured and formalized nature of the disciplinary action taken against Abass.
The expulsion of Mr. Ibrahim Abass from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was rationalized on the grounds of upholding party discipline. The NDC, citing anti-party behavior, referenced Article 48, Clause (B) of the party’s constitution to justify its decision. This clause specifically addresses actions or conduct deemed likely to embarrass the party or subject it to hatred, ridicule, or contempt, emphasizing the party’s commitment to adhering to its constitutional principles.
Mr Newton Darkey emphasized the seriousness of the alleged misconduct, stating, “We see this as anti-party behaviour and stand against the Constitution of the party.”
The decision to expel Mr Abass was made in light of his perceived support for the NPP’s John Peter Amewu during the filing of nomination forms in the Hoehoe Constituency. The party pointed to photographic and video evidence circulating widely as proof of his presence at the event.
The expulsion serves as a clear message from the NDC regarding the importance of party loyalty and discipline. The party encourages its members to adhere to the principles and values outlined in its constitution and discourages any conduct that may compromise the party’s unity or public image.
A member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Agbey, has issued a formidable warning to Ernest Owusu-Bempah, the deputy communication director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). This development underscores heightened tensions between key figures from opposing political parties.
Alleging unwarranted attacks on the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, James Agbey claims that Ernest Owusu-Bempah, the Executive Director of the Ghana National Gas Company Limited, has been needlessly targeting Mahama. This assertion points to escalating political tensions and exchanges between individuals associated with different parties.
In a statement released to GhanaWeb, James Agbey declared that members of his party would handle Ernest Owusu-Bempeh with severity if he persists in his attacks on Mahama, the former president of Ghana. This statement further accentuates the intensifying political friction and the potential for increased confrontations between the two parties.
“Politicians have a duty to uphold the highest standards. We are entrusted by the public to safeguard and protect our democracy. Failing to do so and allowing characters like Owusu-Bempah to taint the halls of power risks the very foundation of our democracy.
“It is no secret that this weakling and pathetic stooge is incredibly fixated with the former president. Let me assure him that we have taken notice of him and we’re coming for him,” the NDC operative wrote.
He added that, “I, James Agbey, acting on behalf of my colleague operatives in the NDC can assure Owusu-Bempah that the NPP will be sent parking out of the Jubilee House on December 7 through the ballot box, and there’s absolutely nothing he can do about that. However, if his likes decide to play the long game, then he should be ready to pay the price for his clownish politics”.

NDC Operative warns: We will deal ruthlessly with Owusu-Bempah if his attacks on Mahama continues ———-
I have become aware of yet another dose of Ernest Owusu-Bempah’s mindless drivel directed at His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the former president of Ghana.
Ernest Owusu-Bempah infamously has no shame when it comes to disparaging others, but he should make an exception and be ashamed of his recent, continuing attacks on former President John Mahama.
Instead, he continues to prove that he is a man without character and backbone.
His Facebook post yesterday was almost deranged in its utter lack of conviction. Typical of Owusu-Bempah, he once again portrayed President Mahama as a failure, and even went further to assassinate the character of the former president.
I’ve long been convinced that this Owusu-Bempah boy ought to have his head examined. His blend of nastiness, pettiness and general mental incompetence marked him out as a social misfit.
Indeed, it is quite astonishing just how little Owusu-Bempah cares for anyone but himself yet managed to persuade a decent chunk of NPP insiders that he is fit enough to work as a public servant in a department that was incorporated under the Mahama/Mahama regime .
Owusu-Bempah has got the comfort blanket of Ghana Gas Company Limited to keep him warm and so he feels he is untouchable.
When are these twats in government going to wake up and realise that Ghana isn’t their personal property?
That we have such a comical character parading himself as a politcal player is a stain on our country.
Quite clearly, the likes of Owusu-Bempah hasn’t figured out yet that picking a curious series of public fights on social media and its related confrontational stunts also reflects his thinking as a public servant.
Politicians have a duty to uphold the highest standards. We are entrusted by the public to safeguard and protect our democracy. Failing to do so and allowing characters like Owusu-Bempah to taint the halls of power risks the very foundation of our democracy.
It is no secret that this weakling and pathetic stooge is incredibly fixated with the former president. Let me assure him that we have taken notice of him and we’re coming for him.
I, James Agbey, acting on behalf of my colleague operatives in the NDC can assure Owusu-Bempah that the NPP will be sent parking out of the Jubilee House on December 7 through the ballot box, and there’s absolutely nothing he can do about that. However, if his likes decides to play the long game, then he should be ready to pay the price for his clownish politics.
Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr John Kwakye, has brought attention to the mismanagement of the country’s economy by the two prominent political parties over the course of the past 32 years.
In a notable stance, Dr John Kwakye urged the presidential candidates of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to issue apologies to the Ghanaian public for the perceived mishandling of the economy.
Dr John Kwakye noted that the prevailing economic challenges in Ghana partly stem from the actions of the two primary political parties.
Dr. Kwakye charged the two main flagbearers, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Dramani Mahama, to explain to the electorate the things they would do differently if given the mandate to be at the helm of affairs of the country.
The IEA Director of Research called on voters to reject these two presidential candidates if they are unable to table the policies they have put in place to turn the economy around.
In a post on X, Dr Kwakye said, “NPP and NDC must apologise to Ghanaians for bringing the country, once the shining star of Africa, to its current sordid state. Their presidential candidates should tell us what they are going to do differently to turn the economy around. Otherwise, they don’t deserve our mandate.”
He added, “NPP and NDC presidential candidates must first admit their party failures in the past 32 years and tell Ghanaians what they are going to do differently to turn this country around. Otherwise, they should be rejected by the electorate. NPP and NDC have woefully failed Ghana over the past 32 years. Their presidential candidates should openly admit the NPP and NDC failings and tell us what they are going to do differently. Otherwise, the electorate should reject them.”
The former president, John Mahama is seeking re-election, whereas the vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is seeking election to be the president.
In a fervent call to action, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has implored Ghanaians to actively contribute to securing a brighter future for the country by advocating for a change in leadership through the ousting of the governing New Patriotic Party in the upcoming 2024 polls. The party’s appeal underscores its vision for a transformative future and encourages citizens to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s trajectory.
The NDC contends that the prevailing economic challenges in Ghana stem from the mismanagement by the ruling party.
In a New Year’s address, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, encouraged Ghanaians to perceive the approaching 2024 election as an opportunity to reshape the fortunes of the country.
“In the spirit of unity and shared aspirations for progress, let us recognize this upcoming election as an opportunity to shape a brighter future and address the challenges imposed by the present leadership. Despite the economic difficulties, the National Democratic Congress remains committed to serving the interests of all Ghanaians, working towards a future characterized by inclusivity, economic development, and social harmony.”
“As we bid farewell to 2023, a year marked by economic hardships inflicted by the current NPP government, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) extends warm New Year wishes to the resilient people of Ghana,” Mr. Kwetey stated.
Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged his preparedness to grant an additional Eid holiday to Muslims in the country should the NDC assume power in the next government. This assurance underscores Mahama’s dedication to recognizing and accommodating the religious celebrations of the Muslim community.
Addressing a pertinent issue, the former president voiced apprehensions about the hindrance Muslims face in fully enjoying their holidays due to challenges associated with moon sighting.
These statements were conveyed by Mr Mahama during the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission held in Kumasi on Friday, December 29.
He emphasized modifying the Public Holidays Act to benefit Muslims, adding that he would ensure it does not affect productivity.
Mr Mahama assured, “It is our intention to resolve the situation where some of our Muslim brothers and sisters do not enjoy the public holiday at the end of Ramadan fast due to the 29 or 30-day rule based on sighting the moon. Therefore, we will add a holiday to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. If Insha-Allah we are voted into office, we will add an additional holiday to the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration. And we are going to do this by reconfiguring the Public Holiday Act so that Ghana maintains the same number of public holidays per year so that we do not affect productivity.”
The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, on December 14, initiated a new private members bill to amend the country’s Public Holidays Act 2001, Act 601, by providing an additional two Islamic public holidays.
These are Tashreeq (a day after the Eid-al-Adha Festival) and Shaqq (a day before the Eid-al-Fitr).
The bill was submitted to the Clerk of Parliament on Wednesday, 29th November 2023, and is currently being processed.
Muslim leaders, on October 8, urged the government to designate two days as official holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha to address recurring disputes over the commencement of these holidays.
The Conference of Regional Imams of Ghana highlighted the persistent uncertainty about whether the Ramadan holiday should be observed on the 29th or 30th day.
Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has affirmed his commitment to constructing the nation Ghanaians envisage, as he addressed and reassured Ghanaians on the party’s mission and objectives.
In his New Year’s address, Mr Mahama conveyed gratitude to the Almighty for guiding the people throughout the entirety of the year 2023.
Calling upon Ghanaians to express gratitude, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer emphasized the importance of being thankful for God’s protection throughout the year 2023 in his New Year message.
“By the grace and mercies of the almighty God 2023 has ended, and we have entered 2024. Let us praise and take our maker for protecting and preserving us,” he said.
“Together we shall build the Ghana we want, a prosperous and just Ghana filled with opportunities for all,” the former President added.
The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has refuted claims that outspoken NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) who have been critical of the government are intentionally being singled out for removal in the forthcoming parliamentary primaries.
The claims were made by Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, an opposition MP representing Odododiodoo.
Vanderpuye specifically cited Eugene Boakye Antwi of Subin and Andy Appiah-Kubi of Asante-Akim North, both of whom had been vocal in advocating for the removal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, as examples of MPs allegedly facing targeted elimination.
During an appearance on the Key Points program on TV3, Vanderpuye stated, “These individuals are being targeted by the establishment,” while discussing the decisions of some lawmakers, including Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, not to seek reelection.
In response, Ahiagbah refuted the claim on the same show, stating, “The idea that some MPs are being targeted is not true. The space is competitive, so if you are afraid of some contest you can’t make that claim.”
NPP closed nominations on December 25 for parliamentary aspirants in constituencies with incumbent MPs.
The parliamentary election is scheduled for January 27, 2024, marking the next phase of the party’s efforts to have representatives in all 275 constituencies. This follows the successful primaries held in orphan constituencies on December 2.
As of the close of nominations on Christmas day, some seasoned party members opted not to submit forms, signaling a voluntary end to their parliamentary careers.
One notable figure on this list is Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who has represented the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region since 1997.

Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Okyere has urged President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to address what he perceives as the Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem’s disregard for the Constitution.
According to Dr. Okyere, Kwaning-Bosompem’s continued presence in office is a violation of both the Constitution and the Code of Conduct governing the Civil Service in Ghana.
Despite serving as the Controller and Accountant General, Kwaning-Bosompem has declared his intention to run in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries for the Akyem Swedru Constituency in the Eastern Region, scheduled for January 27.
Dr. Okyere’s concerns were expressed following confirmation by Prof. Dominic Fobih, the Akyem Swedru Constituency Chairman of the NPP, acknowledging Kwaning-Bosompem as one of three aspirants in the party’s primaries for the constituency.
Responding to queries about a potential breach of the constitution, Prof. Fobih deferred to the courts as the appropriate authority to make such determinations. The Supreme Court has previously ruled that a member of the Civil Service or Local Government Service cannot continue in those roles after being sworn in as a member of a District Assembly.
This situation has raised widespread concerns, as Kwaning-Bosompem remains in his role as Controller and Accountant General while actively participating in political campaigning for the 2024 elections.

As the New Year unfolds, the party stands firm in its commitment to navigating the political landscape with a focus on the betterment of Ghana, fostering positive change, and advancing the welfare of its citizens.
In its New Year message, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) called on Ghanaians to work towards securing a brighter future for the country by ousting the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections.
The NDC attributed Ghana’s current economic challenges to mismanagement by the governing party.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, encouraged citizens to perceive the 2024 elections as an opportunity to positively transform the nation’s trajectory.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the 31st December Revolution today, December 31, 2023, at Ashaley Botwe old town park, Adenta, in the Greater Accra Region.
The event is expected to be characterized by the lighting of the perpetual flame, laying of wreaths, and a durbar.
The commemoration is under the theme, “Building the Ghana we want: Revisiting the Decade that Stopped the Decay [1982-1992].”
The 31st December Revolution is celebrated every year to remind NDC members of the ideals upon which the 4th Republic was established—probity, accountability, freedom, and justice.
The event is expected to start at 8:30 am, with the functional executive committee of NDC, cadre corp, the flagbearer of NDC John Dramani Mahama, the National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of NDC, Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey constituency, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings, some traditional authorities, and stalwarts of the party in attendance.
According to the party, the country faced a year marked by economic hardships inflicted by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
In a press statement signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, and released on Sunday, December 31, the NDC stated that it acknowledges the difficulties faced under the current administration, however, “we embrace the hope that 2024, being an election year, brings forth the chance for positive change.”
The party further admonishes Ghanaians to recognize the 2024 general elections as an opportunity to shape a brighter future and address the challenges imposed by the NPP government.
“As we stand at the threshold of a crucial election year, may it inspire renewed hope, optimism, and a collective vision in building the Ghana we want.
“Together, let us navigate the path of change, building a nation that thrives on the principles of democracy, equality, and justice,” the NDC said.
In a recent interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, self-proclaimed prophet Eric Boahen Uche confidently asserted that the politician and businessman, Kennedy Agyapong, is destined to become the President of Ghana.
Prophet Uche, known for his bold and accurate political predictions, emphasizes the unwavering nature of this prophecy, stating, “Kennedy Agyapong would definitely become president of Ghana; there is no two ways about it. He’s destined to become president”.
“If you go back to check my background, I was the only prophet to predict that the 2020 elections would go to court. I clearly said that the NDC would take the NPP to court, and it all happened”.
Highlighting his past accuracy, Prophet Uche references his unique prediction about the 2020 elections going to court, where he foresaw the National Democratic Congress (NDC) taking the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to court.
Expressing confidence in Agyapong’s potential, he describes the Assin North MP as respectful and foresees him as a fantastic president.
Prophet Uche recalls a personal encounter with Kennedy Agyapong during a time when Agyapong and Kweku Annan criticized men of God. Acting on behalf of a fellow pastor under scrutiny, Prophet Uche narrates how Mr Agyapong personally escorted him from his car to his office, emphasizing the respectful nature of the politician.
While acknowledging potential skepticism, Prophet Uche’s predictions have sparked curiosity and speculation about Kennedy Agyapong’s political trajectory among those who believe in prophetic insights.
Kennedy Agyapong’s surprising performance in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries adds fuel to the speculation.
Mr Agyapong garnered over 71,000 votes, securing the second position after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
His unexpected success in the party’s super delegates conference, where he outperformed anticipated contenders like former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, further adds to the intrigue surrounding Agyapong’s political future.
Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama is poised to bring has what it takes to transform Ghana.
Speaking to the media, he emphasized that Ghanaians should overwhelmingly vote for him in the 2024 elections.
During a ceremony where he was conferred with a chieftaincy title, Sugru-Lana, Chief of Patience, by the paramount chief of Nakpanduri, Naba David Kansuk Na Golbila II, MP Haruna Iddrisu lauded Mahama’s unique combination of past presidential experience and his current non-presidential perspective.
He believes this duality will be instrumental in reshaping the trajectory of Ghana’s economy.
“I have said that former President Mahama is coming back to the throne with two important insights and one important hindsight. He has been President, and he is being outside as non-President, and he will combine the two to change the destiny of this country.”
Expressing optimism in Mahama’s ability to effect positive change, the former Minority Leader urged the people in the region to support NDC MPs to contribute to the broader transformation led by Mahama.
“I pledge to continue to exercise utmost restraint and patience in my attempt to contribute to the public interest and overall development of Ghana,” Haruna Iddrisu affirmed.
In its recent analysis of the social media presence of Ghana’s leading political parties, IMANI Africa revealed that during December, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had a significant social media reach of approximately 14 million, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lagged behind with a reach of about 3.1 million.
According to IMANI’s Public Understanding and Literacy for Sentiment and Election analysis (PULSE), NPP garnered 266,000 interactions, surpassing NDC’s 192,000-plus interactions stemming from comments and posts.
The report underscored that the social media discourse overwhelmingly favored NPP, and traditional web-based sources reflected a dominance of around 90% of content related to the party.
Introducing a new metric called Advertising Value Equivalent, the report estimated the value of the social media reach as if the content were paid for.
In December, NPP’s Advertising Value Equivalent exceeded $1.14 million, while NDC’s was a more modest $251,000-plus.
Selorm Branttie, Leader Researcher at IMANI Africa, highlighted the substantial difference in total media engagement on social media between NPP and NDC.
Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, emphasized the significance of these facts, stating on his Facebook page, “Facts are sacred. Start work.”
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its condolences and paid tribute to the late Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy, former Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, who passed away on the morning of Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
In an official statement released and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC hailed Mr. Ntumy as a great man whose absence would be keenly felt.
“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is deeply saddened by the death of Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy, esteemed former chairman of The Church of Pentecost,” the release stated.
It added that “Apostle Dr. Ntumy’s unwavering commitment to spiritual leadership and community development has left an enduring legacy as his profound contributions were a blessing to both the church and the nation.”
The NDC extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy and the Pentecost Church community during this challenging time.
“May his memory continue to inspire and bring solace to those who knew him,” the statement added.
The Ashanti Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrews Nana Akwasi, has declared that no amount of effort can rescue the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from facing opposition.
Speaking with Akoma News, Nana Akwasi directly accused President Akufo-Addo of causing irreversible damage to the economy, stating, “No miracle can save the NPP from going into position, with this level of mismanagement?”.
He highlighted the recent district-level elections as a clear indication of the public’s mass rejection of the governing party, particularly in the Ashanti region.
Nana Akwasi pointed out that NDC-affiliated assembly members secured 366 electoral areas in the Ashanti region, signaling a growing acceptance of the NDC among the people.
“in the Ashanti region alone NDC affiliate assembly members secured 366 electoral areas an indication that the majority of the people in the Ashanti region are beginning to accept the NDC.”
Encouraging party supporters, he emphasized the need to persist in canvassing votes for the party, noting, “Even our flagbearer is not resting; moving all over the country to preach change to the people, we are not resting until we get the power.”
As he concluded, Nana Akwasi extended festive wishes, saying, “I wish all NDC supporters, sympathizers, and every Ghanaian a merry Christmas.”
Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has boldly asserted her preparedness to confront any adversaries advocating violence in the upcoming 2024 elections.
In response to the provocative statements from National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, Joseph Yammin and Mustapha Gbande, Hawa Koomson issued a direct challenge for a face-off in Kasoa, emphasizing that true courage is demonstrated in actions, not mere rhetoric.
Dismissing claims of being inherently violent, Koomson clarified that her past actions were driven by self-defense in the face of attacks from the NDC.
“I am happy to respond. Mustapha Gbandi should be warned, he should leave me out of his mouth, he and his Yammin.
“They know me and I know them, if he thinks ranting on radio is what is manliness, he should forget it. Manliness is shown on the grounds. If he likes he should meet me at Kasoa. He and Joseph Yammin should meet me at Kasoa, I will show them that there is a woman who is more than a man. They should meet me in Kasoa if they believe they are prepared,” she stated.
Refusing to be intimidated, she asserted her commitment to defending herself against any potential assaults from the opposition in the future.
Her resolute stance comes in the wake of threats and calls for NDC members to arm themselves during the 2024 elections, a move she considers unacceptable.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation into Gbande’s statements, considering the potential for incitement to violence.
Hawa Koomson’s unwavering demeanor not only underscores her readiness for the political battleground but also highlights the tense and contentious atmosphere as the nation gears up for the crucial electoral process in 2024.
The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) National Organiser, Joseph Yammin, has affirmed that the party is prepared to protect ballots in the 2024 general election through any necessary means.
Mr Yammin emphasized that the NDC’s experience of assault, rigging, and intimidation in the 2020 elections will not be repeated, and any such actions will be countered.
In an interview on Okay FM, Mr Yammin stated, “Do you think we are going into the election to clap for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia? We are going to win the election and if winning the election means that we have to protect ourself, we are going to do that.
“We are not going into the election to watch on for Bawumia to become president. We are going to tell Ghanaians to make Mahama president because he is the only person that can save this nation.
“We are going to vote and if it calls that we have to also protect the ballot boxes, we are going to do that, whatever means we need to protect the ballot boxes, we are telling you and telling everybody listening to you that we will do it.
“No matter the intimidation, no matter what. We will not sit aloof. The palms that were used to slap people in 2020 we also have some and we don’t just use ours to eat fufu, we can also slap someone,”
Mr Yammin’s remarks follow a police statement announcing an investigation into a similar statement made by the Deputy National Secretary of the party, Mustapha Gbandi.
The police deemed Gbandi’s call for NDC supporters to be armed at polling stations as potential incitement.
In response, Yammin defended Gbandi’s position and criticized the police for not addressing incidents of electoral intimidation and violence by the ruling New Patriotic Party against the NDC.
He emphasized that the NDC will protect its ballots if the police cannot guarantee a free, fair, and transparent election.

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has cautioned Ghanaians against succumbing to what he describes as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) numerous “phantom” and “unfulfilled” promises leading up to the 2024 general election.
He emphasized that as the incumbent government nearing the conclusion of its second term, the natural expectation would be for the government to present its re-election bid grounded in its present achievements and track record.
“Instead, we see the NPP making very grandiose promises to Ghanaians of what they would do if re-elected while staying silent on how their abysmal current performance, an indicator of how well they will do if re-elected,” he said.
Speaking at separate durbars in the Central Region, he described the 2016, 2020 and the yet-to-be-announced 2024 manifesto of the NPP as “promises made, promises broken and promises repeated.”
Acknowledging the NDC National Chairman’s call for the residents of the Central Region to assume responsibility for the party and enhance its standing as a stronghold, particularly given the significant presence of several party stalwarts in leadership roles, he highlighted the influential contributions of past leaders. These include the late Kow Nkensen Arkaah and Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur, both former Vice Presidents, as well as the late Prof John Evans Atta Mills, former President. Additionally, he noted the roles of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, a former Education Minister, and the late Ama Benyiwa Doe, former Central Regional Minister.
The National Chairman stressed the importance of reconsidering the region’s voting patterns, asserting that it was evident Ghana needed a new direction. This necessitates the election of a new leader who can leverage their credibility with the people to uplift the region and the country as a whole.
“Election 2024 is very critical in the country’s history with greater emphasis on a leader who will be the preference of the majority of Ghanaians and not just a leader of a political party,” he said.
Addressing the concerns raised by Mr. Nketia, Prof Richard Kofi Asiedu, the Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, reassured that in the 2020 election, the party demonstrated strength by winning 13 out of the 23 parliamentary seats and securing 45.9 per cent of the presidential votes.
Despite this achievement, the regional party leadership remains steadfast in its commitment to enhance the NDC’s performance in the region. Their ambitious goal for the 2024 elections is to surpass the 45.9 per cent presidential vote from 2020 and achieve over 60 per cent.
As part of their strategic plans, the party aims to secure victories in at least 20 out of the 23 parliamentary seats and garner more than 60 per cent of the presidential votes. The set targets involve elevating the parliamentary seats from 13 to 20 and increasing the presidential votes from 45.9 per cent to 60 per cent in the upcoming elections.
