Minority in parliament has expressed disappointment with the Ministry of Finance for not furnishing Members of Parliament with copies of the 2024 budget statement following its presentation on November 15.
Minority Leader Ato Forson highlighted the issue, underscoring the need to promptly receive the budget documents for the ensuing post-budget discussions.
“Mr. Speaker, it is important for me to state that as we speak, we are all aware that the post-budget starts tomorrow; unfortunately, we have not received copies of the budget statement,”Ato Forson conveyed during parliamentary proceedings. “I do not have a copy of the budget statement, and no one is here. I have been observing the Ministry of Finance website since Wednesday to be able to download a soft copy,” he added.
Ato Forson underscored the significance of having access to the budget documents, describing the situation as a pressing concern as the house commences its worship tomorrow. “Mr. Speaker, this is not a speech; this is an appendix that comes with it. Mr. Speaker, we don’t have it; we don’t have it,” he reiterated.
His remarks stem from allegations by some members of the National Democratic Party (NDC) over the incumbent government’s abandonment of hospital projects that were started by the previous government.
In response to this on Hello FM in Kumasi, Mr. Osei-Mensah stated that the NDC lacks the moral authority to discuss issues concerning the region as it has failed to take meaningful actions for the people.
He called on the NDC to show him just one hospital it was able to commission during its tenure and he will step down from his role as minister.
“They [NDC] are complaining about uncompleted hospitals. They claim the hospital at Nyameani junction has been awarded and its a loan; who told them?” he quizzed.
“NDC should be ashamed of themselves. When they were in power from 2009 to 2017, did they even commission one hospital in the Ashanti region?. They should show me just one and I’ll resign. If they get just one hospital they commissioned, I will resign.I tell you, we are going to work with facts and figures,” he said.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and Fitch Solutions, two UK-based research firms, are both predicting a victory for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by former President John Mahama in the upcoming 2024 Presidential elections.
The EIU forecasts a transfer of power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) which will be represented by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, its flagbearer, to the NDC.
This shift, according to the EIU, will be driven by factors such as declining living standards, limited job opportunities, and poor public services.
Fitch Solutions also suggests that the ruling party is unlikely to retain power, with former President Mahama expected to secure victory in the swing regions by nearly 48 percent compared to Vice President Bawumia’s 29%.
According to BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, the NPP is unlikely to stay in power after the 2024 election. Data from Global Info Analytics and their own sources indicate that the NDC is ahead of the NPP in the Volta-Oti regions, Northern regions, swing regions, and Akan regions.
The EIU report forecasts that the Ghanaian cedi will regain some of its lost value following a debt restructuring deal and is expected to end 2024 below 12 cedis to the dollar.
The report indicates that in 2024, about nine African countries will hold elections, with incumbent regimes expected to prevail in most cases, but there is a heightened risk of reduced parliamentary majorities.
According to the EIU, Ghana is likely to witness a transfer of power from the ruling NPP to the NDC, driven by factors such as declining living standards, limited job opportunities, and poor public services.
The report also predicts that inflation will ease in most African countries in 2024, but some major economies, including Ghana, will continue to experience double-digit inflation.
Member of Parliament for theOdododiodio constituency, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has disclosed the factors influencing his decision to step down from parliament, citing frustration as a major element.
During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Vanderpuye expressed his discontent with the difficulties encountered by Members of Parliament (MPs) in carrying out their responsibilities.
He emphasised the absence of support from political parties, leading to increasing pressure and a decline in interest over time.
“I am leaving parliament because I am frustrated; the [political] parties really do not protect the people they have [in parliament]. So, you are subjected to so much pressure that, after a time, you lose interest because you don’t get the sort of environment to be able to harmonise the talents and competence you have,” he explained.
Lamenting the high attrition rate in parliament, he said that many MPs from both sides of the House face similar frustrations, resulting in valuable contributors leaving the legislative body.
“The attrition rate in parliament is too high, and as such, people do not get the sort of experience they require to advance the work of parliament,” Vanderpuye remarked.
He additionally commended seasoned MPs for their valuable contributions to the House, citing figures like Dr. Osei Assibey and the late Dr. Akoto Osei.
Vanderpuye underscored the significance of parliamentary experience, emphasising that Speaker Alban Bagbin’s achievements are rooted in his extensive tenure as a Member of Parliament.
National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has acknowledged the increasing apprehension about a decline in the standard of representation in Ghana’s Parliament.
During an appearance on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, November 16, the former NDC General Secretary affirmed his alignment with the perception that there has been a noticeable shift in how individuals perceive and approach parliamentary roles.
He highlighted the transformation from the traditional view of parliament as a platform for serving citizens to a more contemporary perspective where people view it as an investment.
“It is true that the quality of representation has declined, and it is not just an opinion; there is one survey report that has cited what the speakers have been talking about,” stated Asiedu Nketia.
The National Chairman of the NDC pointed out a crucial factor contributing to this decline, emphasising the negative impact of the increasing monetization of politics.
He added that in the past, individuals were driven to enter parliament by a genuine passion to serve the nation. However, the current scenario paints a different picture, with individuals now viewing parliamentary positions as a strategic investment opportunity.
“One of the key causes has been the overmonetization of politics; in the past, people went to parliament out of a passion to serve the nation. Now people go to parliament as a means of investment. Some just want a service passport to do their business.”
Asiedu Nketia advocated for a collaborative effort to overturn this trend, stressing the necessity of returning to the values of authentic public service that were once synonymous with Ghana’s Parliament.
However, he acknowledged the difficulty in implementing criteria, particularly educational qualifications, for political parties to consider before approving an aspirant to contest a parliamentary seat.
Former Greater Accra Chairman of theNational Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has expressed concern that the party could risk losing the Odododiodio seat if the challenges surrounding the parliamentary primary in the constituency are not appropriately addressed.
The NDC has put a halt to all processes related to the parliamentary primary in the Odododiodio Constituency following a violent incident at the Greater Accra Regional Office during the vetting of aspirants.
The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the NDC has subsequently handed over the investigation of the violence to a special committee.
During an appearance on the Face-to-Face show on Citi TV, Ade Coker emphasised the critical importance of handling the issue properly to prevent the party from losing the Odododiodio seat in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
“If they don’t handle it well, we will lose that seat, and people must be up and doing because people who have gone to contest in that constituency don’t deserve to be there because that is not their constituency.
“There is a former NPP person who has been brought in, and he is contesting contrary to the party’s constitution, demanding that he should have served the party within a timeframe before contesting.
“Unfortunately, there is another person who is a former MP forAmasaman who should have gone to Amasaman to ensure that they win the seat again, yet he is contesting at Odododiodio.”
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has indicated that the party’s 2024 manifesto will be revealed soon.
During an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, November 5, Mr Nketia suggested that the NDC will not run its campaign on free promises, especially at a time when production must be elevated to sustain the economy.
For him, this would prevent a situation where money will be printed to help address the country’s economic woes..
“We will bring our manifesto out very soon,” he hinted, “and you will know what it is that we are going to do.”
“Whatever you promise to do can only succeed on a strong economy,” he stated, citing agriculture and energy as key areas to be given attention.
“We will give you the details of what our manifesto will look like but the bottom line is that you cannot build anything on nothing. So, those who go about promising free this, free that, free this, free that, the free can only happen on solid production.
“If there is no solid production and you go about promising free, free, free, you can only print money and when you print money you will make the economy worse.”
He also conveyed his confidence in the party’s candidate, John Dramani Mahama, prevailing over the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.
Mr. Mahama, during his ‘Thank You’ tours, gave indications about some of the policies he intends to pursue if he is re-elected to lead the country.
“The payment of ex gratia to members of the executive will be scrapped,” he announced when he launched his bid to contest the NDC presidential primaries held in May.
“The necessary constitutional steps to take this will start in earnest in 2025,” he added.
“We will also persuade members of the other arms of government to accept its removal.”
Mr. Asiedu Nketia disclosed that some individuals who had criticized Mr. Mahama during his presidency are now offering apologies to him.
“Those who are talking today are the same people who condemned John Dramani Mahama and over the past two years, people are coming out to apologise.
“People are coming out to say that they were misled into believing in certain things and that is a stronger vote for President John Dramani Mahama.”
The Oti Regional Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gabriel Lembue, has prayed for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s victory in the ongoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.
According to him, it is beneficial for the opposition NDC’s 2024 flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to contest against the Vice President.
He noted should Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, who is also contesting for the flagbearer position, emerge victorious, it would be a challenge for the NDC.
“When you have people on the streets telling you that we want this fellow, it is a revolutionary time when we had the Rawlings. People think that Ken is the next Rawlings, so we will have quite the challenge in putting people together.
“What are you going to say about Ken. Ken says I am a job creator. Our people need hope and the message of hope has been trumpted by Ken Agyapong. Personally, I won’t hide it. We have been a bit concerned.
“But I’m happy that the system is pushing for a candidate that would make it simple for us. I would wish that the NPP would overwhelmingly endorse Dr Bawumia today. I will personally celebrate.”
Meanwhile, provisional results from the NPP primaries see Dr Bawumia in the lead position.

Independent flagbearer hopeful Alan Kyerematen, has cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) about potential complacency ahead of the 2024 elections, highlighting the danger of assuming an automatic shift in power every eight years.
Kyerematen, addressing his supporters in Kumasi, highlighted what he perceives as a prevalent mindset within the NDC that anticipates a change in government every eight years, regardless of the quality of governance.
He stressed the need to avoid the notion of ‘it’s your turn’ as a determining factor for leadership transitions.
“The NDC operates under the belief that a change in government occurs every eight years, adhering to the principle of ‘it’s your turn.’
However, this perspective disregards the essence of meritocracy. I, Alan, would have been a flagbearer of the NPP if I adhered to such a principle,” Kyerematen stated.
His departure from the NPP and subsequent establishment of a new political movement arose due to diverging perspectives on leadership principles.
“In my case, the grassroots pushed for me to lead, but there was opposition from certain quarters. Consequently, I’ve moved on to form a separate political movement,” he added.
Kyerematen further suggested that the belief in an eight-year power cycle could create an opening for broader change in the political landscape.
He suggested the possibility of a departure from the typical partisan structure and alluded to a scenario in which Ghana could see the election of a non-partisan president.
“So, if the NDC thinks it has eight years and therefore it is their turn to come to power, the Movement for Change is coming… and in 2024, history will be made in this country and you will have the first president of Ghana who will be elected as the first non-partisan president,” Kyerematen stated.
Alan Kyerematen, a key figure in the establishment of the New Patriotic Party, has veered away from the party and shifted his attention to his new political movement.
If billboards had their own economy, they would likely be sporting smiles, especially with the onset of the political season in the country.
However, one particular billboard, carrying a message shrouded in mystery, has garnered significant attention in recent days.
Before delving into the details of this conversation, it’s important to note that the largest opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has experienced its fair share of political fervour in 2023.
This included the election of John Dramani Mahama, a former president of Ghana, as its flagbearer, along with the selection of parliamentary candidates for all 275 constituencies in the country.
Conversely, the incumbent party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently immersed in a wave of political excitement as it gears up to choose its flagbearer on November 4, 2023. The selection of its parliamentary candidates is expected to follow at a later date, possibly in 2024.
But one question that has lingered for decades is, ‘Can Ghana get a third political force: whether from a political party (or an amalgamation of smaller ones) or from independent candidates?’
Could that be what this new, much-talked-about billboard could be presenting?
A man in a wooden mask stirs social media reactions:
The billboard features an image of a man wearing what appears to be a wooden mask. He is attired in a tailored suit, complete with a flying tie and a pocket square, conveying a straightforward message: ‘Leadership for the next generation.’
On the lower right corner of the billboard, the flag of Ghana is displayed, accompanied by the hashtag #TheNewForce along the bottom.
It wouldn’t be bad if is Cheddar. He dey inspire many of the youth.
While many have suggested that it might be entrepreneur and socialite Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Freedom Jacob Caesar and popularly referred to as Cheddar, the true identity behind the mask remains undisclosed.
National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ntim, has expressed no sign of hope for the recovery should the ruling party be taken out of power.
The political system in Ghana is dominated by two political parties; NPP and the National Democratic Congress. The NPP, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo has governed for 8 years.
Since 2000, no political party has had the opportunity to govern for more than 8 years concurrently.
On this matter, Mr Ntim says the ruling party must be given the opportunity to continue its works. According to him, the NDC, tipped to be the party that replaces the NPP, has nothing good to offer.
“The alternative to an NPP government is scary, and the alternative to us is empty. These statements are valid because the NDC has not put forth any policy ideas to address the youth unemployment challenge, which is the preoccupation of governments worldwide,” he said.
He made this remark during a joint press conference with the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on November 2.
On Saturday, November 4, 2023, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to select its flagbearer for the upcoming December 2024 general elections.
This marks a significant transition as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has led the party for the past 16 years, prepares to pass the leadership baton. The NPP’s choice for the 2024 presidential race will also determine its new leader.
Four candidates have thrown their hats into the ring: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Kennedy Agyapong, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region; and Francis Addai Nimoh, the former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency in the Ashanti Region.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has noted that it will take up another investigation into the alleged commission of corruption and corruption-related offenses involving former Deputy Finance Minister, Charles Adu Boahen, in Tiger Eye P.I.’s Galamsey Economy documentary.
The party’s decision to probe the matter comes after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) directed the closure of investigation in respect of allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences involving Charles Adu Boahen.
Undercover agents of Tiger Eye P.I., posing as businessmen who were interested in investing in Ghana, met with Mr. Adu Boahen and tabled their investment plans and proposals to him.
It was reported that sensing an opportunity to cash-in on his position as a Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr. Adu Boahen demanded twenty per cent (20%) of the value of the proposed initial investment or ten per cent (10%) upfront payment of the value of the proposed initial investment and post-investment sharing of the proceeds of the investment.
In its findings, the OSP found out that Mr. Adu Boahen politely accepted the cash gift in order not to offend the sensibility of a potential wealthy investor looking to invest half a billion United States dollars in Ghana.
According to the OSP, the indices point to the conclusion that Mr. Adu Boahen’s principal motivation was his own personal gain though he intimated to the supposed sheikh that he was driven by the potential developmental benefits to Ghana of the proposed investment.
The actions of Mr. Adu Boahen tantamount to trading in influence or influence peddling, the OSP said. This is the practice of using one’s influence or connections in public office or with persons in public office to obtain favours or preferential treatment for oneself or for another person, usually in return for payment.
These acts have not been specifically prohibited in our jurisdiction as crimes per se, the OSP noted.
“Though the conduct of Mr. Adu Boahen amounts to trading in influence or influence peddling, which is closely associated with corruption, there is no actual criminal prohibition of his acts in respect of which the OSP has a mandate to further act,” the report added.
As such, the OSP has closed its investigation and may only be re-opened should the circumstances and further facts so dictate.
In response to the report, the opposition NDC noted that the conclusion drawn by the OSP is “totally flawed and misconceived.”
The party in a statement signed by Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, explained that Mr Adu Boahen’s conduct amounts to the offense of extortion as provided under section 247 of the Criminal and Other Offenses Act, 1960 (ACT 29)
“Explanation as to Extortion. A public officer commits extortion who, under colour of office, demands or obtains from a person, whether for public purposes or for personal gain, or for any other person money or valuable consideration which the public officer knows is not lawfully authorised or at a time at which the public officer knows is not lawfully authorized to demand or to obtain that money or valuable consideration,” the statement read.
According to the NDC, the OSP’s report “smacks of a coverup” and has the potential to dampen public confidence in the Office of Special Prosecutor if not reviewed immediately.
“The conduct of Charles Adu Boahen constitutes corruption of monumental proportions and must not go unpunished,” the statement added.
As a result, the NDC says “its next government shall institute criminal investigations into this matter with the objective of prosecuting all those found culpable.”
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the report of the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP) on investigations into the alleged commission of corruption and corruption-related offenses involving former Deputy Finance Minister, Charles Adu Boahen.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has accused former Minister of State for Finance, Charles Adu Boahen of influence peddling after its investigations into allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences were visually recorded by Tiger Eye P.I. as part of its Galamsey Economy documentary.
Undercover agents of Tiger Eye P.I., posing as businessmen who were interested in investing in Ghana, met with Mr. Adu Boahen and tabled their investment plans and proposals to him.

Meanwhile, the NDC has noted that its next government shall institute criminal investigations into this matter with the objective of prosecuting all those found culpable.
“Until then, we urge the Ghanaian public to treat this report with the contempt it deserves and demand a total reversal of this disappointing decision of the OSP,” the statement concluded.
In their inaugural series of press conferences named “Eastern Must Know,” the Eastern Regional Communications Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) tackled a pressing issue – the widespread theft of railway tracks that has been plaguing the region.
During the press conference held on Monday, October 30, 2023, the NDC shed light on the troubling situation of illegal removal and sale of rail tracks and steel sleepers from disused railway lines throughout the region.
The NDC has alleged the active involvement of certain members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the unlawful dismantling and trading of these rail tracks, impacting numerous constituencies in the area, including Nsawam, Achiase, Upper West Akyem, New Juaben (North and South), Fanteakwa South, Asene Manso Akroso, and others.
Kojo Dankwah, the Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, asserted that in Nsawam, NPP leaders had collaborated with Chinese individuals to harvest the rail lines, employing young men as participants in this illicit enterprise.
Similar activities were reportedly observed in Akroso and other regions, with NPP members allegedly implicated.
“Once again, our investigations in Akroso township, Osenho, Edison, Appiadiam, Bekiase, Kumikrom, and the surrounding areas have unveiled a distressing reality. We have discovered that a criminal enterprise is actively operational in the areas mentioned above, and even more troubling, is the involvement of certain individuals associated with the NPP (New Patriotic Party). The names that have surfaced include Ahmed Tijani, who serves as the NPP Nasara Coordinator and a sitting Assembly member for Akroso Amanfrom.
In addition, Kojo Attah, a fervent advocate of the NPP and a former assemblyman for Akroso Kyenso, is implicated. Furthermore, we have identified an individual known as Apolo, purportedly the brother of the current District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asene Manso Akroso, Honorable Alex Nkoom” the NDC alleged.
The situation was exacerbated by accusations of police involvement in shielding the suspected wrongdoers.
The NDC claimed that, in certain instances, law enforcement officers provided continuous protection to these individuals, hindering the pursuit of justice.
Moreover, allegations of political interference in the investigative process were brought to attention, casting doubts on fairness and the pursuit of justice.
The NDC underscored the significant threat these incidents pose to Ghana’s development, particularly considering the substantial costs associated with constructing railway lines.
They called for the immediate apprehension and prosecution of those responsible, the development of a comprehensive action plan by the police to address this issue, and an independent investigation into the alleged involvement of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In conclusion, the NDC appealed for collaborative efforts to tackle these pressing concerns and ensure the protection of Ghana’s future. They stressed the importance of holding the government accountable and seeking resolutions to combat lawlessness and corruption.
The party therefore made the following:
“We demand the immediate and unwavering apprehension of Baffour Awuah the NPP Constituency Organiser of Achiase and his associates, and we insist on the unrelenting pursuit of their prosecution. We fiercely and resolutely insist on a detailed and unambiguous action plan from the police for the swift annihilation of this menace. We passionately and unwaveringly call for a fully independent and exhaustive investigation to probe the alleged involvement of the Vice President.
And sternly impose a strict 48-hour ultimatum on the police to apprehend all culprits; their failure will compel us to mobilize all available forces for uncompromising citizen arrests, without hesitation”.
The press conference stressed the need for swift action and vigilant oversight to protect the nation’s railway infrastructure and advance its development.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put in diligent effort by engaging in nationwide party mobilization to secure a third victory over the National Democratic Congres (NDC) and its candidate, John Mahama.
The Minister’s rationale behind this appeal is rooted in his belief that John Mahama’s track record offers little to benefit the Ghanaian populace. He emphasized that none of the NPP flagbearer aspirants have previously served as President, unlike former President Mahama, who has a dismal track record.
Dr. Prempeh made these remarks during a meeting with delegates from his Manhyia South constituency on Friday, October 27, 2023, in preparation for the NPP Flagbearer elections scheduled for the following day.
He acknowledged that the challenging global economic situation has resulted in governments facing declining popularity, which the NPP has not been immune to.
Dr. Prempeh urged NPP members to convey the party’s accomplishments to Ghanaians, especially in light of these adverse conditions, in contrast to the NDC’s track record, which did not have to contend with similar external shocks.
“We have to let the Ghanaian people know that, we haven’t made their lives all-rosy, we admit there are difficulties, but we are fixing the challenges.
Another opportunity to continue the work we doing is better than giving a man whose ambition is just to complete his second term to equal the record of his predecessors,” he said.
The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South encouraged the delegates of Manhyia South to regard the upcoming event on November 4, 2023, as an internal party exercise. He emphasized the importance of conducting the exercise without animosity, discord, or antagonism among party members.
“After the Presidential Primaries, we must come together, work together, hold together and defeat the NDC again,” he said.
In the wake of severe flooding that struck the Volta Region due to the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, numerous individuals and organizations from across Ghana have extended their support to the affected communities.
Among those offering assistance is the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s largest opposition political party. In a display of solidarity, audio-visual footage shared by NDC supporters on social media platforms showcases trucks filled with relief goods en route to the flood-affected areas in the Volta Region.
One of the prominent contributors to this relief effort is John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the NDC. His team reportedly dispatched a sizable truck loaded with essential supplies, bound for Keta, one of the heavily affected regions.
The provision of these goods aims to alleviate the suffering and challenges faced by the flood victims, as the catastrophic floods have taken a toll on their homes, livelihoods, and communities. The images and videos of these relief efforts have garnered attention on social media, highlighting the collective efforts of Ghanaians to support those in need during this challenging time.
This act of goodwill from the NDC and other supporters underscores the importance of unity and solidarity during crises, demonstrating that Ghanaians are committed to helping their fellow citizens in times of adversity. As the affected communities grapple with the aftermath of the floods, the support they receive from various quarters, including political parties, organizations, and individuals, is vital in helping them rebuild their lives and restore their communities.
“This is a lot. He (Mahama) brought about 3000 mattresses, 2000 bags of rice, 2000 cartons of tin tomatoes, 2000 cartons of sardines and other things,” a woman can be heard narrating in the video.
She said that since the floods started, the residents of Keta have not received aid before.
Background
The spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam and the Kpong Dam in the Volta Region has resulted in widespread devastation, affecting numerous communities.
More than 10,000 residents in the region have been compelled to evacuate their homes, and the floodwaters have inflicted severe damage on various properties, including houses, household appliances, farmlands, and vehicles.
In response to the crisis, the government has established an inter-ministerial committee tasked with assessing the extent of the damage caused by the spillage and coordinating the necessary assistance for the affected citizens.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo visited some of the worst-affected areas, such as Mepe, to offer reassurance that his administration is committed to providing support to those in distress.
Aerial images of the Volta Region, as depicted by TV3, vividly illustrate the extensive damage brought about by the flood.
These visuals reveal vast expanses of land submerged by floodwaters, encompassing agricultural fields, public spaces, and various structures, including homes, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and business establishments. The inundation is indicative of the profound impact of the flood on the region’s landscape and infrastructure.
The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has condemned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its stance on the government’s handling of illegal mining, known as galamsey.
He argues that the NDC lacks the moral authority to complain about the damage caused by this issue.
According to Mr. Yeboah Dame, the NDC’s past efforts to combat galamsey were ineffective and should not serve as a basis for criticism of the current government.
He described the NDC’s track record in addressing the problem as “wretched and miserable”, asserting that they did not manage to apprehend or prosecute any major figures involved in illegal mining during the Mahama administration.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, October 18, he emphasized that during the previous Mahama administration, the NDC was unable to apprehend or bring to justice a single influential figure involved in illegal mining activities in the country.
“I consider it ironic for the NDC, whose record in the fight against Galamsey can be described at best, as wretched and miserable, to mount personal attacks on me for the brave efforts in the fight against Galamsey.”
“The record shows that the NDC woefully failed and/or neglected to arrest and prosecute a single kingpin of Galamsey, including the touted Galamsey queen, Aisha Huang.”
Additionally, in response to the party’s call for his resignation due to the guidance provided by his office to the CID regarding Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s report, Mr. Dame highlighted his success in the arrest and prosecution of Aisha Huang.
He asserted that his exemplary efforts led to the apprehension and ongoing prosecution of Ms. Huang.
“It is noted that all acts committed by Aisha Huang for which she gained notoriety, took place between 2014 and 2016.”
“However, remarkably, it was the current NPP administration which commenced the prosecution of Aisha Huan in 2018.”
Mr. Dame remained unimpressed with the NDC’s actions against the menace, citing their inadequate penalties for galamsey operators during their time in office.
Despite this, he maintained that “no significant convictions for Galamsey offences were recorded in the regime of the NDC when that political party had the opportunity to govern.”
“Their Flagbearer before the 2020 General Elections, openly declared amnesty for all those arrested for engaging in Galamsey activities in communities affected by the heinous environmental hazard.”
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning that it will deal with officials of the Akufo-Addo government allegedly involved in illegal mining should there be a change of power in the 2024 elections.
Expressing deep concern about the devastating impact of illegal mining on the present and future generations, the NDC is demanding an immediate halt to such activities.
During a press conference as part of its ‘Moment of Truth Series’ on Monday, October 16, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, cautioned those implicated in the illegal mining issue to prepare for accountability.
“We hereby serve notice, that even if they are left off the hook today, they will not escape the long arms of the law tomorrow, because crime has no expiry date.”
“Until this is done, we shall make no headway in our fight against illegal mining and our beloved country, will have no sustainable future”.
“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply worried and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment”.
“They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade’. Their actions through their Attorney-General to continuously protect corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak loudly. Posterity will never forgive them,” he said.
Mr. Gyamfi, however, laid the blame for the widespread destruction caused by illegal mining on President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He contended that the two are actively involved in and supportive of the illegal mining trade, which explains the lack of action to combat it.
“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply concerned and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment.”
“They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade.’ Their actions, through their Attorney-General, to continuously shield corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak volumes. Posterity will never forgive them,” he remarked.
Furthermore, the party is demanding the immediate resignation of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, accusing him of attempting to conceal serious crimes committed by corrupt government and NPP officials involved in illegal mining.
“The NDC hereby demands the immediate resignation of the Attorney-General for his dubious attempt to cover up serious crimes that have been perpetrated against the state by corrupt government and NPP officials who are destroying our water bodies and forests through illegal mining.”
This demand comes after the Attorney General advised that former Environment Minister, Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s allegations in his report on illegal mining activities lacked substance. Mr. Dame emphasized that there was no evidence to prosecute individuals named in the report.
Prof. Frimpong Boateng had identified some high-ranking government officials as complicit in the illegal mining problem, even reaching as far as the Jubilee House, the seat of government. He also alleged that the claims of some 500 missing excavators seized from illegal miners in 2020 were fabricated by certain government figures to discredit him.
Since his revelations, calls for accountability from government officials and individuals involved in illegal mining have increased. However, Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has advised against giving much attention to the 36-page report authored by Prof. Frimpong Boateng titled “Report on the work of IMCIM so far and the way forward.”
The Ministry of Information has strongly denounced the assault on Akosua Otchere, a journalist from Citi FM, by National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Odododiodio on Friday, October 13, 2023.
In an official statement, the Ministry emphasized that journalists and media organizations should never be subjected to any kind of harassment, intimidation, or violence while simply carrying out their professional duties.
“The Ministry has urged the station to formally report the incident to both the Ghana Police Service and the NMC for appropriate action to be taken against the perpetrators.”
On Friday, October 13, 2023, Akosua Otchere, a journalist, was assaulted while providing coverage of the vetting process for parliamentary aspirants of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Odododiodio constituency in Accra.
Ms. Otchere was targeted by a group of individuals associated with the NDC, who forcefully twisted her arm and seized her phone.
This incident unfolded when supporters of one of the aspirants engaged in destructive behavior, damaging party property, including chairs and an air conditioner, and resorted to throwing stones at the vetting committee members, alleging unfair treatment.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly denounced the physical attack on Akosua Otchere, a journalist from Citi TV/Citi FM, at the party’s regional office in South La.
This unfortunate incident occurred during the vetting process for the upcoming Odododiodio primaries on Friday, October 13.
In a press release, signed by the National Communications Officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC expressed deep regret over the incident and extended an apology to the victim.
“The leadership of the National Democratic Congress has learnt with deep regret, an unfortunate incident that occurred at the party’s Greater Accra Regional Office on Friday, 13th October, 2023.”
“While the party was vetting aspirants for our upcoming Parliamentary primary in the Odododiodio constituency, some aggrieved persons took the law into their hands and engaged in acts of vandalism.”
“In the course of the pandemonium, a journalist with Accra-based Citi FM/Citi TV by name Akosua Otchere, was attacked and manhandled,” an excerpt of the release said.
The NDC additionally stated that anyone found to be responsible for the incident will face appropriate consequences. The party emphasized its non-support for acts of violence and vandalism.
“The NDC is a truly democratic and peace-loving political institution that upholds the critical role of the media in nation building. We neither subscribe to nor condone acts of violence of any form let alone attacks on journalists.”
“The party takes full responsibility for this unfortunate incident and assures the general public, that we shall take immediate steps to fish out the perpetrators.”
“All those found culpable shall be dealt with in accordance with the disciplinary rules of the party and the laws of Ghana,” the statement concluded.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a stern demand for the prompt apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for the assault on Citi FM journalist Akosua Otchere last Friday.
In a statement signed by GJA’s General Secretary, Kofi Yeboah, the organization strongly condemned the attack on Ms. Otchere while she was carrying out her professional duties.
The GJA also urged both government and non-government entities, as well as the international community, to denounce this incident.
“What happened at the offices of the Greater Accra Regional Branch of the NDC on Friday was an act of insanity that must not be allowed to fester in our body politic, and so we urge the Police to act swiftly to arrest and prosecute the thugs in order to help sanitise the political space, especially in respect of assault on media practitioners by political actors.”
The statement added that “the GJA has taken ‘editorial notice’ of press statements issued by the NDC’s regional and national leadership condemning the attack on the journalist, apologising for the “highly irresponsible” act and giving assurance to deal with the party’s thugs who indulged in that dastardly act.
“While waiting for action beyond the rhetoric by the regional and national leadership of the party, the GJA wishes to serve notice, with deep ink, to political parties and the general public that henceforth, any assault on journalists and the media shall be repelled with the strongest weapon we can marshal.”

GJA Demands: Police Must Arrest NDC Thugs Who Assaulted Citi FM/TV Reporter
ACCRA, October 14, 2023 (GJA) – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) calls on the Ghana Police Service to immediately arrest and prosecute the National Democratic Congress (NDC) thugs who assaulted a reporter of Citi FM/TV covering the vetting of aspirants for the party’s Odododiodio Constituency primary on October 13, 2023.
The GJA roundly condemns the attack on Akosua Otchere in the line of duty and calls on state and non-state actors, as well as the international community to condemn same.
What happened at the offices of the Greater Accra Regional Branch of the NDC on Friday was an act of insanity that must not be allowed to fester in our body politic, and so we urge the Police to act swiftly to arrest and prosecute the thugs in order to help sanitise the political space, especially in respect of assault on media practitioners by political actors.
For the records, we wish to emphasise that the City FM/TV News Team were at the NDC Regional Office to perform a public-interest duty and they were properly and professionally clothed in respect of identity.
In the circumstances, we expected the party leadership or the party as an institution to protect the news team from harm, and the thugs to refrain from making them objects of attack in their internal party skirmishes.
The GJA has taken ‘editorial notice’ of press statements issued by the NDC’s regional and national leadership condemning the attack on the journalist, apologising for the “highly irresponsible” act and giving assurance to deal with the party’s thugs who indulged in that dastardly act.
While waiting for action beyond the rhetoric by the regional and national leadership of the party, the GJA wishes to serve notice, with deep ink, to political parties and the general public that henceforth, any assault on journalists and the media shall be repelled with the strongest weapon we can marshal.
The GJA has put its legal team on standby as we prepare to meet the Inspector-General of Police on Monday to discuss pertinent matters, including the recent attacks on the Citi FM/TV journalist and UTV.
The GJA will go every length under the law to deal with political actors and individuals who may attack journalists as we gear up for the 2024 electioneering.
We call on political parties in particular and other stakeholders to educate their members to refrain from attacking journalists and learn to channel their grievances, if any, through the appropriate avenues as dictated by the rule of law and practised in civilised states.
Once again, we encourage journalists and media practitioners never to be intimidated by such attacks; rather, we must defy them and always stay faithful to the public interest.
The media will continue to serve as a bridge between the government and the governed, and no individual or group will be allowed to destroy that bridge, no matter the tactics they may employ. END.
The Greater Accra Region chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the recent acts of hooliganism that took place at the party’s regional office in South La.
The incident unfolded during the vetting of parliamentary candidate aspirants for the Odododiodio constituency on Friday, October 13, when a group of thugs forcibly entered the premises, resulting in property damage and an assault on a journalist from Citi FM/Citi TV.
In a statement endorsed by the regional chairman, Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, the party extends heartfelt apologies to the general public and all individuals affected by the actions of these thugs.
“On behalf of the Greater Accra Regional NDC, we offer our sincere apologies for the regrettable incident and extend our apologies to Akosua Otchere for the distressing ordeal she endured,” stated Mr. Ashie Moore.
Mr. Ashie Moore also pledged to cover all the medical expenses incurred by Akosua Otchere, the journalist who was assaulted during the unfortunate incident.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodio constituency, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take decisive action against those responsible for the chaos that erupted at the party’s Greater Accra regional office.

Violence erupted during the vetting process for parliamentary candidate aspirants of the Odododiodio constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region on Friday, October 13, 2023.
One faction of candidates’ supporters damaged party assets, including chairs and an air conditioner, and threw stones at the vetting committee, accusing them of unfairness.
The incident unfolded at the regional party office in South La, where three individuals, namely Nii Okai Laryea, Kotey Ashie, and Michael Nii Yarboi Annang, were undergoing vetting, aspiring to succeed the incumbent MP, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, who has opted not to seek re-election.
Earlier in February 2023, the Odododiodoo Constituency couldn’t partake in the vetting process due to unresolved internal issues within the party.
Today’s vetting aimed to determine the eligibility of the three aspirants for the party’s parliamentary primary scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
In the midst of the chaos, one of the parliamentary candidate aspirants, Michael Nii Yarboi Anang, successfully completed the vetting process. Anang, a former Member of the New Patriotic Party, aspires to be the Parliamentary Candidate for the Odododiodoo Constituency under the NDC ticket.
Boxer Bukom Banku, a prominent supporter, expressed their endorsement of Anang, stating, “We love Mr. Anang and we want him to represent us in parliament. He serves and provides jobs for people in the community, contributing to the community’s welfare.”
Several of Anang’s supporters criticized the NDC national executives, alleging bias in the vetting process.
The Greater Accra Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a challenge to Owusu-Bempah, the Deputy National Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), regarding his planned picket at the premises of former President John Dramani Mahama.
The NDC youth have called on Owusu-Bempah to announce a new date for his intended picket, emphasizing that they are prepared to respond with their own “clean-up” exercise at John Mahama’s office, depending on Owusu-Bempah’s actions.
Initially, Owusu-Bempah had announced his plans to picket at John Mahama’s office on October 12, 2023, to demand an investigation into the Airbus scandal. However, he later rescheduled this event, prompting the NDC youth to postpone their own cleanup exercise.
In a statement, the NDC youth criticized Owusu-Bempah’s actions, characterizing them as an attempt to gain unwarranted attention. They expressed confidence that he may not announce a new date for his planned picket, but they stand ready to respond if he reschedules the event.
“Following the decision of the coward loudmouth, Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, to abort his unwise decision to picket at the office of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama under the guise of rescheduling same, we wish to announce a postponement of our planned clean-up exercise at the same venue.
The decision to embark on a clean-up exercise at the office of the 2024 flagbearer of our party was contingent on the rabble-rouser’s inane announcement to picket at Mr Mahama’s office on Thursday, October 12, 2024. We knew from the onset that Owusu Bempah was engaged in his usual publicity stunt to court underserving attention for himself.
“Though we are firm in our minds that Owusu Bempah may not announce a new date for his planned picketing, we wish to state that on any day the hazardous things, he smokes deceive him to reschedule his event, we would be ready to meet him at John Mahama’s office to ‘weed out’ all unwanted materials,” part of the statement read.
The NDC youth group has also appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, expressing their hope that if he instructs Owusu-Bempah to reschedule his demonstration, the new date would be approved, should Owusu-Bempah decide to proceed with it.
“We wish to plead with the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare that if indeed, he directed Owusu Bempah to reschedule his demo, then he should please approve any new date he would fix it, that is if he would muster the courage to dream about it again.
“We take note of the pent-up feeling of the youth and the eagerness with which the announcement of a clean-up exercise at the office of Mr. Mahama was received. We urge all of you to keep anything you might have procured for the planned clean-up exercise for another day,” it added.

A communication member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Twum Barimah, has expressed his support for political activist and social commentator A Plus for his actions at the studios of UTV.
Speaking as a panel member on UTV’s morning show, Twum Barimah stated that although he is not a fan of A Plus, he believes A Plus did the right thing by tearing up a letter written by the NPP to UTV regarding its United Showbiz program.
He emphasized that the NDC has never thought of raiding or invading the premises of other TV and radio programs in the country that seem to favor the ruling NPP, despite their content.
“I am not a fan of A Plus but I give it to him. He has done very well. He did well for shredding the letter and this is why. Number one, the content stated that the program was serving the interest of the NDC. You read it. The programme is serving the NDC? Then we should have stopped Oman FM’s Boiling Point a long time ago. Seriously. How can you be angry about a UTV show because you feel it is serving the interest of the opposition party? We should have closed down Oman FM a long time. The content of the show has changed; does NPP give content?” he quizzed.
The chaos at UTV’s studios occurred on Saturday, October 7, 2023, when alleged thugs, believed to be affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), disrupted a live broadcast of the United Showbiz show.
This incident followed A Plus’s decision to tear up a letter addressed to UTV’s management by the NPP, which demanded reforms to the United Showbiz program. A Plus had criticized the letter’s content and the propriety of its issuance during a previous broadcast.
The Deputy National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, has strongly criticized the Central Bank’s governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, characterizing him as an arrogant and discourteous public official.
According to Ako Gunn, he believes that if he were not representing the NDC, he would have used the term “mentally unstable” to describe Addison.
“It is unfortunate that the governor has chosen to disrespect Ghanaians. He opened his mouth and made reckless and irresponsible remarks about people whose taxes pay him. Hooligans are lawless people, and describing taxpayers who pay his monthly salary demonstrates how disrespectful he is,” Mr Ako Gunn stated
The only appropriate observation in this situation is that he lacks self-respect, and as a result, he lacks respect for the people of Ghana. His remarks were deeply troubling. He is employed in an institution plagued by theft, corruption, and mismanagement. If this were not the case, there would be no justification for spending GHC 135 million on car repairs.
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana has informed Central Banking that he rejects the call from the country’s primary opposition party for his resignation. On October 3, the Minority group marched to the central bank’s headquarters, demanding the resignations of Dr. Addisson and his deputy governors, citing the bank’s reported GHC 60 billion loss for the 2022 fiscal year.
Ernest Addison, on the other hand, claims that “the demonstration was completely unnecessary” and that neither he nor his deputies intend to resign.”
Reacting to the comments, Ako Gun said ”I would have declared him mentally unstable if I weren’t a communicator for the NDC. Listen to what I’m saying; I didn’t insult him. I only stated that I would have; I did not describe him as such.”
He made the remarks during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem.
In honor of the late former MP for Ningo-Prampram, Enoch Teye Mensah, and the former National Treasurer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Sidney Laryea, the NDC will lower its party flags to half-mast on Thursday, October 5.
This solemn gesture will be observed at all NDC party offices nationwide to pay tribute to these departed members of the NDC who passed away earlier this week.
The directive to lower the flags was issued by the Functional Executive Committee of the party, as stated in a press release dated October 4th.
Former National Treasurer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Sidney Laryea
“Hon. Enoch Teye Mensah was the first National Youth Organizer of the NDC. With unwavering dedication and patriotism, he rose through the ranks to become the longest-serving Minister for Sports under the 4th Republic.”
“At the time of his death, Hon. E.T Mensah was a Member of the Council of State of the Republic of Ghana. Dr. Sidney Laryea was the first National Treasurer of the NDC and served the party with dedication and unflinching commitment,” parts of the statement read.
The party expressed its deep pride in recognizing the invaluable contributions made by these esteemed individuals to both the advancement of Ghana and the distinguished NDC.
They conveyed their intention to extend condolences and sympathies to the families of the late E.T. Mensah and Dr. Sidney Laryea. This gesture is intended to pay tribute to their legacies and ensure they receive a fitting and dignified burial.
“May the gentle souls of our departed comrades rest in perfect peace,” the party added.
Enoch Teye Mensah, a member of the Council of State, passed away at the age of 77 on Sunday while undergoing medical treatment in South Africa.
Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu has charged religious bodies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to form and alliance and churn out a presidential candidate who will be able to end the duopoly in the political space.
Since the emergence of the 4th Republic, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have dominated the political space.
Both parties have had the opportunity to govern for two successive terms each (8 years) without any other political party coming close to disrupting the cycle.
Ahead of the 2024 elections, the ruling NPP is committed to breaking the cycle and extending their governance to 12 years but the NDC is unwavering in their quest to reclaim power.
For some Ghanaians, this cycle has proven not to augur well for the country as the economy has not been able to develop as expected under the two parties.
As such, the likes of Martin Kpebu want a strong third force that will be able to give the two major political parties a run for their money.
Engaging in a discussion on TV3’s The Key Point, the lawyer entreated churches, CSOs and TUC to make up the third force.
“The NPP and NDC, they are getting swollen headed. It is as if they know that come what may in eight years they will return. I wish they do four, four. I am waiting for the churches, the CSOs and TUC to come up with a candidate. Because we are looking for anything other than NPP and NDC. Anything other thing will do,” he said.
Stressing the potential of the TUC, he called on the Congress to learn from their mistakes when they failed to establish an effective party in the 1970s.
“TUC has to rise up. In the 70s, TUC formed a party and it collapsed. It doesn’t mean they cannot try again. In the UK, it works. The Labour Party. Is it not the Labour people that formed the basis. Let’s go into our history. If TUC tried in the 70s and it didn’t work, does that mean that they should forever stop? You try again. In life, when you fall, do you continue lying down, don’t you get up?” he said.
For some individuals, former Trade Minister, Kwadwo Alan Kyeremanten, who has parted ways from the NPP to go independent is likely the third force Ghanaians have been praying for.
But according to Mr Kpebu, any things who is deeply embedded with the two major parties cannot be the third force needed to reckon with the NPP or NDC.
“So it is good that Alan has come for a third party though I don’t support Alan. No, no. He is too much of NPP. He would come and repeat the same things because the thing is that for all these years why was he quiet. He was Akufo-Addo, he kept quiet. I expected that from where he sits, when he saw that the ship was sinking, he couldn’t even leave early. He sat there so he was part of the problems. Alan doesn’t appeal to me, to be very honest. There is no way I can give him my vote.”
“There is no way I will go for someone deeply embedded with NPP or NDC,” he added.
Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor, was among protestors who stormed the streets of Accra to demand BoG Governor’s resignation.
Mr Otokunor was seen showcasing a big dry bone which he likened to the state of the ailing economy.
According to him, the economy is in a severely deteriorated state, much like a dry bone lacks moisture, vitality, and sustenance.
“We believe that this has become the sad state of the republic. Like this bone. Where the meet has been taken off completely and eaten by the Nana Akufo-Addo government. And unfortunately the other ends of the bone is also going. Very soon there will be no bone at all. So this has become the official insenyur of the republic replacing the black star, and we think it is very sad. If we dont wake up and do something we will not have anything called Ghana,” the NDC member expressed.
Otukornor was seen walking hand in hand with Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle Constituency, Dr. Zenator Agyeman-Rawlings who also added her voice to say “we are here to represent the good people of Ghana. This is beyond partisan politics. This is beyond the NDC and the minority in parliament. This is a standing up to be counted for the protection of the democracy we have.”
A significant gathering of protesters converged at Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, under the banner of #OccupyBoGdemo, a movement initiated by the Minority caucus of Parliament.
Dressed predominantly in somber black and striking red attire, with many sporting vibrant red caps, the demonstrators are unified in their call for the resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, as well as his two deputies.
Their demands stem from alarming revelations regarding the financial state of the Central Bank.
The protesters have brought to light that the Bank of Ghana incurred an astounding loss of GH¢60.81 billion during the 2022 fiscal year. This substantial financial setback has raised significant concerns about the bank’s management and accountability.
The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has stated that the party is willing to participate in Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings if the committee returns to its original role as a consensus-building forum.
Mr Nketia expressed concerns that the advice and input offered by IPAC to the Electoral Commission (EC) currently go unheeded, rendering the committee ineffective.
He emphasized that if IPAC’s objective is to seek consensus, and it is established that consensus cannot be achieved through the committee, then attending IPAC meetings would be a futile exercise.
“The political parties that have been attending IPAC, are they not the ones who are joining us now in court against what the Electoral Commission has done? They went to IPAC, learned about what to do with this voter’s registration and everything they decided upon, the Electoral Commission came out to announce the opposite.”
“Everything you do, there must be an objective, there must be a motive. If the motive behind IPAC is for us to go and seek consensus, and you have come to the conclusion that consensus cannot be sought at the IPAC, you are wasting your time going to sit there,” Mr Nketia said.
However, Nketia indicated that the NDC is open to participating in IPAC meetings if they genuinely serve as forums for building consensus and making positive contributions to improve Ghana.
“If you are calling us to school, it means we are going to study. If you go to school and then you don’t study anything, would you continue going there and your parents be paying the school fees? No. That’s the reason why IPAC was established. So let us go back and use the IPAC to be building the consensus. But if IPAC is not going to be used to build consensus, then that meeting is not IPAC,” he added.
The NDC has boycotted IPAC meetings since March 2020, citing concerns about the EC’s actions.
IPAC is a forum where political parties in Ghana, along with the EC, come together to discuss electoral matters, provide input, and seek consensus on various electoral issues.
The NDC’s decision to boycott these meetings was a form of protest against what they perceived as unfavorable actions or decisions made by the EC, which they believed undermined the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.
This boycott was a way for the NDC to express their dissatisfaction and seek redress for their concerns.
By boycotting IPAC meetings, the NDC effectively withdrew their participation and contributions from this platform, indicating their disapproval of how the EC was conducting electoral affairs.
Meanwhile, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appealed to the NDC to return to IPAC, emphasizing the importance of the opposition party’s representation in decisions affecting all stakeholders.
The NPP urged the NDC to rejoin IPAC discussions for the benefit of the country.
The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed the party’s willingness to participate in Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings should the committee return the party to its original purpose.
During an appearance on PM Express on JoyNews, Mr. Nketia emphasized that, from the NDC’s perspective, IPAC currently holds no significance, as the Electoral Commission appears unresponsive to the input and advice provided by the committee.
He stated that if the Electoral Commission is willing to restore IPAC to its role as a consensus-building forum, the NDC will not hesitate to participate in meetings and actively contribute to discussions aimed at improving the governance of Ghana.
“If you are calling us to school, it means we are going to study. If you go to school and then you don’t study anything, would you continue going there and your parents be paying the school fees? No. That’s the reason why IPAC was established. So let us go back and use the IPAC to be building the consensus. But if IPAC is not going to be used to build consensus, then that meeting is not IPAC.”
Since March 2020, the NDC has refrained from participating in IPAC meetings due to concerns it raised about the Electoral Commission’s conduct.
Conversely, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has extended an appeal to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to rejoin the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
Evans Nimako, the Director of Research and Elections at the NPP, emphasized the importance of the opposition party’s return to IPAC. He stressed that this move would ensure the NDC’s representation in decisions that are relevant to all stakeholders.
“IPAC has been meeting; the New Patriotic Party has always been honouring invitations from the EC. We cannot force other parties to come or not to come, but if you check from the EC you realise that anytime IPAC has been held the party has enquired about the steps the EC has taken to invite the NDC.
“If you look at the current CI, the 91, it says that the EC must conduct continuous registration and it says also that there must be a modality committee and that committee has been formed at IPAC. We expected NDC to be part, to be around so that we can all discuss issues that will take onboard the interest of all stakeholders and this they’ve reneged. So we’ll rather continue to call on them to come back to IPAC for all parties to discuss,” he said.
The Eastern Region branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has requested that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) enhance security at the district office of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Upper West Akyem.
They have accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman, Nana Adei Obuobi, of causing disruptions and intimidating EC officials by leading a group of individuals to fire gunshots.
According to the NDC, the individuals disrupting the registration process are allegedly members of the Okyenhene taskforce.
In a press release issued by the Eastern Region Secretary, Jamal Konneh, the NDC demanded increased security at Adeiso to prevent any unforeseen incidents and called on Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panyin, to intervene and restrain his associates.
“Per our intel, the thugs he brought to disrupt the registration process are members of the Okyenhene taskforce,” the NDC alleged in a press release issued by Eastern Region Secretary Jamal Konneh on Sunday, October 1.
“We call on the IGP and the Regional Commander to beef up security at Adeiso to help avert any unforeseen circumstances,” the press release demanded.
“We are also calling on Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panyin, to call his men to order.”
The NDC emphasized that while they believe in democratic processes, they will not be intimidated by the NPP or its affiliates in the region, warning against employing violence as a strategy in the 2024 elections.
The limited voter registration exercise was scheduled to end on Monday, October 2.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to rejoin the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
This request follows the NDC’s expression of numerous concerns regarding the use of the new Constitutional Instrument (CI) by the Electoral Commission (EC) during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
During a roundtable discussion organized by a coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Accra, the Director of Elections for the NPP, Evans Nimako, expressed the opinion that the NDC’s return to IPAC would provide the most effective avenue for addressing their concerns.
“If you look at the current CI, the 91, it says that the EC must conduct continuous registration and it says also that there must be a modality committee and that committee has been formed at IPAC. We expected NDC to be part, to be around so that we can all discuss issues that will take on board the interests of all stakeholders,” Nimako said.
“And this they have reneged. And so we will rather continue to call on them to come back to IPAC for all parties to discuss,” he added.
The NDC has boycotted IPAC meetings since 2020, citing concerns about the EC’s neutrality and independence.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have distanced themselves from allegations made by the Electoral Commission (EC) suggesting that political parties are encouraging minors and foreigners to participate in the limited voter registration exercise.
During a press conference held on Thursday, the EC expressed concerns about the involvement of minors and foreigners in the registration process, noting that some members of political parties appeared to be facilitating this through the guarantor system.
Dr. Bossman Asare, a Deputy Chairperson of the EC, emphasized their commitment to establishing a credible voter register. He pointed out that including the names of unqualified individuals could compromise the integrity of the register.
However, on the Newsnight program on Joy FM, Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, countered these allegations. He revealed that many individuals had faced challenges during registration due to suspicions raised by political party agents. These agents were actively challenging registrants to provide documentation to verify their age, part of a concerted effort to ensure that only eligible voters were registered.
“I think that is an alarmist assessment of the issues…You don’t go accusing political parties when your own officials are the ones administering the process. You have seen NPP people challenging NDC people they suspect and NDC people challenging them. So how do you come out to accuse political parties when the system is running naturally?” he quizzed.
“NDC dissociate itself from that accusation. We are not bussed minors. We have no involvement in bussing minors. We believe that the procedure, when you walk to the registration centre, you will be taken through a process and that process is by law enough to be able to detect,” Mr Gbande said.
The Deputy General Secretary of the NDC expressed his disappointment in the Electoral Commission’s decision to exploit the issue as an opportunity to criticize the guarantor system, which allows individuals to vouch for eligible voters who do not possess Ghana Cards, and their attempts to determine people’s ages based on photographs.
He emphasized that this very system is utilized by the National Identification Authority to grant Ghana Cards to a significant number of Ghanaian citizens.
On the other hand, Haruna Mohammed, a Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, not only refuted the allegations but also asserted that the NDC was actually supportive of the registration of minors. He pointed to instances where NDC agents were reportedly advocating for the registration of a 14-year-old as evidence of their endorsement of such practices.
“As a political party we (NPP) are law-abiding we have stated this fact; we are not going to accept the issue of registration of minors. This is clearly stated in Ghana’s constitution that if you don’t attain the age of 18 you should not be registered and we are going to support this particular process”
“I am happy that the electoral commission is talking about a number of people being challenged I hope that these minors will be the chunk of that,” Mr Mohammed added.
Additionally, he voiced his support for the Electoral Commission’s call to discontinue the guarantor system, citing it as one of the factors contributing to the sluggishness of the registration process and other associated challenges.
Mr. Mohammed argued that implementing a more robust system, which exclusively relies on Ghana Cards, would be beneficial in guaranteeing the establishment of a pristine voter register.
A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) communication team, Kwadwo Danquah, has asserted that Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong will part ways with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the party’s presidential primaries.
According to Mr Kwadwo Danquah, he expects Mr Agaypong to follow the footsteps of former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen owing to the alleged maltreatment meted out to them by the leadership of the ruling party.
The Eastern Regional Communications Office made the prediction during an interview on Power FM on September 26, 2023.
“When they go to their office, they go for Kan Dapaah’s boys to come and beat them and destroy their cars. That is what they did to Alan and for that, he has resigned from the party. That thing Akufo-Addo is doing may cause the downfall of the NPP. Mark my words today, Ken Agyapong will also go independent. He will resign and go independent.”
“I am the Eastern Regional Communications Officer; I am saying it on your platform. Today is 26th September 2023, I’m saying after they conclude the November primaries, Kennedy Agyapong will go independent.”
Mr Kyerematen announced his resignation when he addressed the country during a press conference at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra today, September 25, 2023.
He noted that he no longer recognizes the NPP, which has been unfair to himself and his supporters, as its current aims and agenda no longer reflect what the founding fathers had hoped to achieve.
According to the former Trade Minister, he will contest for the office of president as an independent candidate in 2024 with his new party, Movement for Change.
Mr Kyerematen first resigned from the party in 2008 following alleged attacks on his supporters after the NPP held its 2007 presidential primaries.
Reacting to his resignation, the NPP has expressed disappointment over Mr Kyerematen’s inability to inform its leadership of his decision before going public.
In response, Mr Kyerematen said he found no reason to, as he is able to decide for himself.
Mr Kyerematen has been an active member of the NPP following its establishment in 1992.
He was part of a group of young dynamic Business Executives and Professionals came together to establish the Young Executives Forum (YEF) that became the financial backbone of the Party and provided significant financial resources to support the Party in all its endeavours, including the seed fund for the purchase of the Party’s first national headquarters building.
Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edudzi Kudzo Tamakloe, has expressed deep concern regarding the recent increase in the price of kidney dialysis treatment at the renowned Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana.
The cost of this critical life-saving therapy has risen sharply, escalating from GH¢380 to an alarming GH¢768.22, causing significant distress among many Ghanaians.
In a heartfelt appeal, Edudzi Kudzo Tamakloe implored the management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to reconsider their decision. He underscored the importance of not prioritizing profit at the expense of the well-being of patients, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that considers the welfare of the individuals seeking medical care.
“I woke up thinking about this notice at Korle Bu. Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is not a private hospital to be focused on only making profit. I want to plead with the management of the hospital to reverse this death sentence on Ghanaian patients. I know friends and families that require dialysis to survive. In the meantime, let’s take good care of our kidneys by drinking enough water. Reverse the increase in the cost of dialysis treatment,” Tameklo shared on Facebook.
The startling rise in the cost of dialysis treatment has left many Ghanaians active on social media perplexed and concerned.
Reports indicate that the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has informed patients of a substantial increase in the price of dialysis, soaring from GH¢380 to an exorbitant GH¢765.42.
On the popular social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), one Ghanaian expressed their apprehension about how individuals requiring dialysis treatment would manage such a significant cost escalation.
This development has triggered widespread anxiety among citizens, who are deeply troubled by the accessibility and affordability of vital medical services at one of the country’s most prestigious healthcare institutions.
Moreover, the surge in the cost of dialysis treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has raised pertinent questions about the healthcare system’s capacity to provide essential services to those in need.
Kidney dialysis is a crucial medical procedure employed to treat individuals grappling with kidney failure or severe kidney dysfunction.
Its primary objective is to replicate the essential functions of the kidneys, which encompass filtering waste products and excess fluids from the bloodstream, regulating electrolyte levels, and maintaining an optimal fluid balance within the body.
When the kidneys falter in performing these critical functions adequately, dialysis emerges as a necessary intervention to uphold the patient’s health and overall well-being.
Hemodialysis stands out as the most prevalent form of dialysis. During a hemodialysis session, a patient’s blood is extracted from their body and directed into a specialized apparatus called a dialyzer.
Within the dialyzer, the blood traverses a network of fine tubes immersed in a solution known as dialysate. This solution plays a pivotal role in expelling waste products and surplus fluids from the bloodstream.
Following the purification process, the cleansed blood is then returned to the patient’s body. Hemodialysis is typically administered in specialized dialysis centers or hospital settings.
NDC’s National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has described Alan Kyerematen “not viable” in response to his resignation from the NPP.
Alan officially submitted his resignation letter indicating he was no longer interested in being a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Monday [September 25, 2023].
In a post shared on X on Monday, September 25, 2023, Sammy Gyamfi expressed empathy for Alan but pointed out that Alan had played a role in the current hardships faced by Ghanaians and could not absolve himself from it.
He also asserted that Alan, much like the NPP, didn’t bring anything new to the table for Ghanaians and should not be supported.
“The point has to be made forcefully, that Alan is not a viable alternative to the failed incumbent NPP government as a cabinet minister responsible for Trade and Industry and a member of the Economic Management team from 2017-2023, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen actively participated in the destruction of the economy into the mess it is today.
“Under his watch, the Komenda Sugar Factory was abandoned to rot for almost six (6) years. Growth of the manufacturing sector declined significantly and businesses were suffocated by the bad policies of his Ministry and government leading to several job losses,” parts of the post reads.
The significant setback Alan experienced at the party’s special delegate conferences, he continued, was the only reason Alan left the NPP.
“Would Alan have resigned from the NPP if he had been treated fairly by the NPP in their ongoing Presidential primaries?
“Clearly, it is the pain of rejection by the super delegates of the NPP and the intimidation and harassment of his supporters which is fueling Alan’s latest decision and not any superior passion to help heal the partisan divisions in the country. But it is too late for Alan to jump ship now. Alan is not and cannot be the solution to the very mess he participated in creating!” he added.
About Alan’s resignation from the NPP and running as an independent candidate in the 2024 election:
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, on Monday, September 25, 2023, Alan Kyeremateng, announced his decision to leave the NPP and also contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.
He said that even though it was his wish to become president of Ghana on the ticket of the NPP, the party has now been hijacked by ‘unscrupulous party apparatchiks’.
“The NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the Party that I joined in 1992 and helped to nurture. The Party has been hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, government appointees, “behind the curtain power brokers” and some unscrupulous Party apparatchiks.
“… I wish to use this platform to announce that I am honourably resigning from the New Patriotic Party to contest for the high office of the President of the Republic of Ghana in the 2024 general elections as an independent presidential candidate,” he said.
Alan added that his presidential ambition would be run by a movement led by the youth.
“To actualise this goal, I will establish and lead a new MOVEMENT FOR CHANGE in Ghana. The brand logo for the MOVEMENT is the Monarch Butterfly, which politically symbolizes change and transformation, hope, and positivity. It also communicates strength, endurance, spirituality, and trust, which are key traits that I cherish as a Political Leader. In Akan, it is known as Afrafranto. The brand motto of the MOVEMENT is “Ghana Will Rise Again,” which symbolizes hope for the future of Ghana.
“The new Movement will be led and powered by the youth of Ghana. Out of the over 17 million registered voters in the 2020 general election, the youth aged 18-35, years constituted over 9.4 million voters representing 55% of the total voters,” he said.

*On the matter of Alan Kyeremanteng’s resignation from the failed NPP;*
1. It is an indisputable fact, that Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng has not been treated fairly by his party, the NPP.
2. The NPP under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo has never been truly democratic.
There is no way Alan could have gotten a modicum of fairness or justice in the ongoing presidential primaries of the NPP under the leadership of the despotic tyrant, Akufo-Addo who is hellbent on installing his puppet as his successor and continues to oppress persons who disagree with him. Former NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko and former General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong come to mind readily.
3. I understand Alan’s pain and do empathize with him. He and his supporters have continuously been victims of intimidation, unprovoked harassment and violence. His resignation from the NPP is therefore understandable.
4.The basis of his resignation from the NPP is the more reason why no democratic or peace-loving Ghanaian must join or vote for the NPP.
5.*However, the point has to be made forcefully, that Alan is not a viable alternative to the failed incumbent NPP government.*
As a Cabinet Minister responsible for Trade and Industry and a member of the Economic Management team from 2017-2023, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng actively participated in the destruction of the economy into the mess it is today.
Under his watch, the Komenda Sugar Factory was abandoned to rot for almost six (6) years. Growth of the manufacturing sector declined significantly and businesses were suffocated by the bad policies of his Ministry and government leading to several job losses.

Clearly, it is the pain of rejection by the super delegates of the NPP and the intimidation and harassment of his supporters which is fueling Alan’s latest decision and not any superior passion to help heal the partisan divisions in the country. But it is too late for Alan to jump ship now.
*ALAN IS NOT AND CANNOT BE THE SOLUTION TO THE VERY MESS HE PARTICIPATED IN CREATING!*
ALAN = BAWUMIA = NPP THE VALUE IS THE SAME!
SAMMY GYAMFI ESQ. National Communications Officer, NDC
Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to promptly dismiss the petition against Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah’s appointment as Director of Election and ICT.
He argues that the petition lacks merit and could distract Dr. Omane Boamah from his duties.
In a letter addressed to the NDC’s Council of Elders, Samuel Nartey George called on the petitioner to withdraw the complaint, emphasizing the importance of unity within the party to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.
According to him, the party should focus on winning the upcoming elections, and this should be the primary concern for all party members.
“I urge you to dismiss the said petition with alacrity as it has the propensity to shift the focus of the appointee from the solemn task we have handed him.
“Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah is an asset to our great tradition, and we must use this as an example that our Party appreciates the sacrifice of young people and truly believes in their abilities to deliver whenever the need arises.”
“I am a young man deeply connected to the ‘streets of Ghana’, and I can assure you that the appointee is the best choice at this given time.”
Dr. Omane Boamah, a former Minister of Communications, was appointed as the Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in preparation for the critical 2024 elections.
The appointment was announced in a press release issued on Thursday, August 24, which also included a list of other new appointments within the party for the upcoming elections.
Dr. Omane Boamah, a medical doctor and health policy planning and financing analyst, assumed the role previously held by Elvis Afriyie Ankrah since 2019.
However, a concerned supporter and social activist named Delanyo Agbe petitioned the party to reconsider Dr. Omane Boamah’s appointment.
In his letter to the party’s leadership, Agbe argued that Dr. Omane Boamah lacked the expertise necessary to effectively fulfill his duties for the party to secure victory in the 2024 elections.
“I would like to draw your attention to the recent appointment of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah as the NDC’s Director of Election and ICT.
“While I acknowledge the party’s intent to diversify leadership, it is my belief that this particular appointment requires careful review due to concerns regarding Dr Omane Boamah’s competence in the areas crucial to this role.”
Samuel Nartey George has dismissed the concerns raised by Mr. Agbe, asserting that Dr. Omane Boamah is the most qualified individual within the party to hold the position. According to Mr. George, Dr. Omane Boamah possesses the necessary qualifications and expertise needed for the role, making him the ideal candidate within the party at present.
Kwadwo Tawiah Likpalmor, a former Member of Parliament (MP) representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has passed away. He succumbed to a prolonged battle with stroke at the Tamale Teaching Hospital on Tuesday, September 19.
Mr. Likpalmor, aged 63, had a long-standing and influential presence within the NDC. His passing was confirmed by the Kpandai NDC communication officer and several party executives.
During his illustrious political career, Mr. Likpalmor served as the MP for the Kpandai constituency in the Northern region from 1992 to 2012. Remarkably, he was a member of the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
In addition to his political contributions, the late MP also had a background as an educator and held the prestigious position of Principal Superintendent of the Ghana Education Service at one juncture in his career.
Mr. Tawiah leaves behind his wife and five children, leaving a legacy of dedicated public service.
Former presidential aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has expressed his belief that the NPP will face a formidable challenge in the 2024 general elections.
During an interview on Citi TV’s program “The Point of View,” the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation remarked that the NPP’s performance over the past seven years has raised concerns.
He noted that the party had “over-promised and under-delivered” on its commitments to the Ghanaian people, which he believes will make it challenging for the NPP to secure victory in the 2024 elections.
Furthermore, Professor Frimpong-Boateng expressed his disappointment with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), stating that neither of the two major parties appears to offer a promising option for Ghana’s future.
“It will be difficult for the NPP to win the 2024 elections. It is a fact that they [the NPP] have over-promised and under-delivered but everything is possible but the NDC is also not giving me any hope.”
Professor Frimpong-Boateng expressed his optimism in the past, believing that the NPP would maintain its grip on power for an extended period.
He based this optimism on his perception of how the NDC had mishandled the country before President Akufo-Addo assumed office in 2016. However, recent developments and a comparison of the two administrations have proven his optimism to be unfounded.
“When I was in government, I said the way the NDC had mismanaged the country, we were going to help the president and work so that the NPP would still be there even after forty years and there would be no romantic ideas about the NDC again and now look at where we are. I thought we were going to work and there would be no romantic ideas about Mahama and the NDC ever coming back.”
“There should be a change in the two political parties and how they do their things because there are very good people in the NDC same as the NPP,” he further proposed.
Organizer representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Agona West constituency, Sam Toys, has been accused of causing severe cutlass wounds to a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the ongoing limited voters’ registration process.
The victim, identified as a member of the NDC communication team, is reported to be in critical condition following a violent altercation that unfolded between NDC and NPP supporters at the Electoral Commission’s Agona West office in the Central Region.
Speaking with Adom News, Samuel Ametepey, the NDC’s Deputy Organizer in the constituency who claimed to have witnessed the incident, expressed his profound dismay.
He went on to place responsibility for the turmoil on the Electoral Commission (EC) and affirmed that his party would remain steadfast until the voter registration process was completed.
In the meantime, Isaac Somuah, the Communication Director for the Agona West NPP, has refuted the accusations made against their Organizer.
“Toys did not hit the victim’s head with GoTa. Zion’s account is false, he was not present… It was a fight between the two people and they both crashed into a car’s bonnet. That is how come his head hit something and resulted in the wound,” he said.
“Toys also fell from the car onto the floor and they were separated,” Mr Somuah added.
He also dismissed allegations that the NPP is receiving support from the police to take control of the registration process.
However, the NDC’s communication officer for the constituency, Wahab Mukaila, informed reporters that his party is prepared to safeguard its interests if law enforcement does not ensure their protection.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of engaging in voter suppression, asserting that the decision to exclusively conduct the limited voter registration at district offices is not ideal.
As the voter registration process enters its sixth day on September 18, there have been numerous complaints about various challenges. The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the NDC, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, expressed dissatisfaction with the EC’s approach.
Furthermore, there is mounting pressure on the Electoral Commission to reconsider its methods for the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr. Adomako Kissi, argued that confining registration to district offices is not the most effective approach.
In contrast, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Salam Mustapha, expressed satisfaction with the first week of the limited voter registration.
The Electoral Commission commenced the registration on Tuesday, September 12, with the aim of registering first-time voters who have yet to obtain their Voter ID cards.
Despite opposition from the NDC and certain civil society organizations, the registration process continues to take place exclusively at the district offices of the Electoral Commission throughout the country.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has faced accusations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of engaging in voter suppression. This allegation stems from the EC’s choice to conduct limited voter registration solely at district offices, a decision the NDC deems suboptimal.
As the voter registration enters its sixth day today, on September 18, many individuals have raised concerns about various challenges they have encountered.
The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the NDC, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, has expressed dissatisfaction with the EC’s handling of the situation, stating that it is exacerbating the issues.
There is growing pressure on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider and adjust its procedures for the ongoing voter registration exercise. Dr. Adomako Kissi, Member of Parliament for Anyaa–Sowutuom, has also criticized the decision to restrict registration to district offices, arguing that it is not the most suitable approach.
In contrast, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has expressed satisfaction with the progress made during the first week of the limited voter registration.
The Electoral Commission commenced the registration process on Tuesday, September 12, with the goal of enrolling first-time voters who have yet to obtain their Voter ID cards.
Despite opposition from the NDC and some civil society organizations, the registration continues to take place at district offices of the electoral commission throughout the country.
Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is also the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a commitment to finish all ongoing projects, including those initiated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, if he is elected in 2024.
Mahama emphasized that the NDC is a patriotic and conscientious political party that upholds the principle of continuity and is resolute in ensuring that taxpayers’ resources are not squandered.
“I’m making a promise that when we come, we will continue all abandoned projects.
Even projects that this current NPP government does not finish, we will continue and finish because they are funded by taxpayers’ money, so when you abandon them, you’re wasting the money of Ghanaians,” he said.
Former President John Dramani Mahama made this declaration on Saturday, September 16, 2023, during the NDC Greater Accra Regional Zongo Caucus Stakeholders Forum held in Accra.
The forum convened representatives from diverse Zongo and Muslim groups and institutions both within and outside the party. Its purpose was to facilitate the exchange of experiences and discussions on topics of shared interest, fostering social connections and a sense of community.
Among the notable figures in attendance was the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usmanu Nuhu Sharubutu.
Mr. Mahama’s commitment came in the wake of his criticism of the current administration for allegedly neglecting significant projects initiated by his party, particularly in Zongo communities, before he left office in 2016.
“When we were sharing the E-Blocks, several of them were allocated to the Zongo and Muslim communities but many of those schools have been abandoned. We have done a lot in our Zongos but we are not the type who come with a paper and read. Our people can see for themselves the work the NDC did when we were in office,” he stressed.
Mr. Mahama conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for the substantial support that his party has consistently received from the Zongo communities and the Islamic fraternity over the years. He assured them that he would never underestimate this support.
Furthermore, he pledged that the party would maintain an ongoing partnership and engagement with these communities, with the goal of regularly understanding their grievances and concerns, and actively working to resolve them.
“We appreciate that support and that’s why anytime we come to power, we try to make sure that when we are sharing the National cake and development, the Zongos get their fair share,” the 2024 NDC flagbearer added.
During his address, he took the opportunity to encourage all eligible citizens who have reached voting age to participate in the current limited voter registration process. Additionally, he urged the responsible officials to refrain from engaging in discriminatory practices, particularly targeting individuals they believe may not be Ghanaian solely based on their names.
“Everybody came from somewhere and that is why Ghana is a strong nation.
We are united in our diversity and cultures so we must know that we are all Ghanaians and have equal rights to be recognised as such,” the former President said.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has urged members of the Tertiary Students’ Confederacy (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to collaborate with the party’s grassroots to ensure victory for the NPP in the December 2024 elections.
He emphasized that achieving the goal of ‘Breaking The Eight’ is attainable but necessitates unwavering commitment and hard work from all members, underpinned by loyalty, service, and sacrifice.
The minister, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Damongo, delivered these remarks during the second Greater Accra Regional TESCON Boot Camp, held at the Accra College of Education on Saturday, September 16, 2023.
The primary objective of the boot camp, dedicated to the late Kwabena Boadu, a former aide to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was to equip TESCON executives in the Greater Accra Region to effectively fulfill their responsibilities.
Speaking on the theme ‘Loyalty, Sacrifice, and Service: Expectations of TESCON in Delivering Victory 2024,” Samuel Abu Jinapor said that adhering to these cardinal principles is crucial to securing victory in the next election.
He emphasized the importance of duty, sacrifice, and commitment to the NPP as well as to the growth and development of the nation.
The minister emphasized to the audience that the NPP was founded on these tried-and-true values, and that party founders like Dr. J. B. Danquah, Chief S. D. Dombo, Dr. K. A. Busia, and Okyeame Bafour Akoto lived by these values even at the cost of their own imprisonment, exile, and deaths.
Kwabena Boadu was praised for the sacrifices he made to help the party win in 2016 and TESCON members were urged to follow in his footsteps.
“Today, KB is no more. It is our turn to continue from where KB left off and ensure that the victory he helped us secure is maintained and the NPP is retained in power to continue with its developmental agenda for the benefit of the people of Ghana,” he said.
Samuel Abu Jinapor emphasized that the NPP’s developmental agenda is unparalleled by any other political party in the country.
He cited several key initiatives such as the introduction of Free SHS, the National Health Insurance Scheme, the School Feeding Programme, the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP), the National Identification Programme, and the National Digitalisation Agenda as evidence of the NPP’s commitment to development.
Despite recent economic challenges, he noted that the NPP government has established a strong foundation that can propel the nation’s development forward.
He expressed the belief that if the next government, which he expects will be led by the NPP, builds upon this foundation, it will enjoy long-lasting success due to the positive impact on the citizens.
Jinapor asserted that a victory for the NPP in 2024 is the most effective means to enhance the country’s human capital, improve healthcare accessibility for Ghanaians, and unleash prosperity for the masses.
He called on all party members to work together in unity to secure victory for the NPP and “advance the nation’s development in freedom.”
Furthermore, he stressed that the NPP serves as the binding force that unites its members, and he urged everyone not to allow any individual to sow division within the party.
Jinapor also encouraged TESCON members and all party supporters to exert their collective efforts to achieve the goal of “Breaking the Eight,” expressing the need for unity to confront the NDC in the 2024 elections.
National Youth Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, insists that the party will not waste its time attending the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings.
According to him, the opinions of the party are hardly accepted as they are shut down by the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensa.
He noted that the EC Chair has forced the party to opt out of IPAC.
“We have been told by Jean Mensa that IPAC cannot advise her on things we have to do. On many occasions, we have gone on IPAC meetings and made some suggestions, and Jean Mensa has been bold enough to tell us that she doesn’t need our suggestions. We don’t see the need to attend IPAC,” he said.
The main opposition party withdrew its participation from IPAC after the 2020 general elections, accusing the leadership of the EC of alleged bias in favour of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NDC accused the EC of overseeing the manipulation of the 2020 general elections.
Meanwhile, the former Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, has urged members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to rescind their boycott of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
While addressing the 3rd Annual Conference of the NDC Lawyers Association in Akosombo in the Eastern Region, Dr. Afari Gyan emphasized the opportunities that IPAC offers to the various political parties.
“The IPAC makes it possible for political parties to know and make inputs to the important thing the Electoral Commission is doing at any point in time. It makes it possible to discuss the concerns of the parties and makes it possible to contribute to the making of subsidiary legislation, and I will appeal to the NDC to go back.”
“Don’t worry if your ideas are not adopted, please go there and make your ideas felt. Indeed, in some cases, IPAC is the forum for stakeholder dialogue towards achieving common ownership of the electoral system. Under Ghana’s Electoral system, there are many opportunities for political parties to participate in Electoral processes that promote free and fair elections,” Dr Afari Gyan advised.
The primary opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the government of exploiting cocoa farmers by undervaluing their produce throughout the country.
According to the NDC, cocoa is presently commanding a price of $3,600 per bag on the international market. However, the government is compensating Ghanaian farmers only GHS 1,308.00 per bag, a situation that the NDC deems unfair.
At the commencement of the 2023/2024 cocoa season, the government declared a new cocoa price. The price per bag was raised from GH¢800.00 to GH¢1,308.00, and the per-ton price surged from GH¢12,800.00 to GH¢20,943.00. This represented a substantial 63.5 percent increase compared to the previous price.
The NDC asserts that this price adjustment is insufficient and amounts to exploitation of hardworking cocoa farmers.
Mr. Eric Opoku, the Ranking Member on the Food and Beverages Committee of Parliament, expressed his concerns about the government’s offer during an interview on The Citizens Show on Accra 100.5 FM, hosted by Nana Ama Agyarko on September 14, 2023.
Mr. Opoku pointed out that there is a scarcity of cocoa on the international market, a fact acknowledged by the International Cocoa Organization (ICO). This shortage has driven cocoa demand to unprecedented levels. He further explained that such a significant price surge has not been witnessed since 1970, primarily due to production shortages in premium cocoa from Ghana and Ivory Coast.
Under normal circumstances, Mr. Opoku argued, cocoa farmers should be reaping significant benefits from the high cocoa prices spurred by the global shortage. However, he believes that the government’s actions are unjust, as it is providing farmers with a meager sum while profiting immensely from the unprecedented cocoa prices.
According to Mr. Opoku, this situation represents a clear case of the government taking advantage of ordinary farmers at the expense of their rightful earnings.
The National Youth Organiser for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, has refuted allegations that the party has been transporting potential voters to the limited voter registration locations.
“We have seen videos of NPP going around communities dishing out money to people who have now turned 18 years to register. Have you seen any video of anybody from NDC bussing people?” he asked.
Opare Addo also acknowledged that it is acceptable for people to ask their leaders for assistance if they are experiencing financial difficulties.
“When you are leaders of a community and your members reach out to you about registration being done in communities far away where they are. And so we mobilised ourselves, can you help us with transportation, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it,” he said.
Additionally, Opare Addo emphasized that the NDC would not waste its time attending meetings of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), since their comments would not be taken into consideration.
He highlighted the actions of EC Boss Jean Mensa as the reason they decided against joining IPAC.
“We have been told by Jean Mensa that IPAC cannot advise her on things we have to do. On many occasions, we have gone on IPAC meetings and made some suggestions and Jean Mensa have been bold enough to tell us that she doesn’t need our suggestions. We don’t see the need to attend IPAC,” he said.
Opare Addo’s statements come amid allegations that both the NDC and the NPP are participating in voter mobilization practices, including bussing people to registration centres and offering money incentives to prospective registrants.
The Council of Elders within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has received a formal petition requesting a reconsideration of the recent appointment of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, former Minister of Communications, to the position of Director of Elections and IT.
This petition has been submitted by Delanyo Agbe, a self-identified concerned NDC supporter and social activist, who expresses a deep commitment to the party’s progress and success.
In the petition, Agbe puts forth several reasons for his request, prominently stating that Dr. Omane Boamah may lack the requisite expertise to effectively manage matters related to elections and information technology.
“Election management and ICT are critical components of modern political campaigning,” he wrote.
“Dr. Omane Boamah’s medical background, while noteworthy, does not seem to align with the intricate technicalities of information and communication technology and the complexities of electoral processes.”
Agbe emphasizes the significance of election management and ICT within contemporary political campaigning, noting that Dr. Omane Boamah’s medical background, although commendable, may not align with the intricate technical aspects of information and communication technology and the complexities of electoral processes.
“I implore you to consider this petition seriously and to engage in an open dialogue regarding the concerns raised,” Mr Agbe wrote in his petition.
“The NDC’s future success hinges on our ability to adapt, evolve, and address shortcomings effectively.”
While expressing respect for the party’s leadership decisions, Agbe urges a careful consideration of the suitability of individuals for specific roles, emphasizing the alignment of their strengths and competencies.
In closing, Agbe implores the Council of Elders to give serious attention to this petition and engage in an open dialogue to address the concerns raised, highlighting that the future success of the NDC depends on its ability to adapt, evolve, and effectively rectify shortcomings.
In response to another accusation related to his involvement with Afrah International Hospital, Dr. Omane Boamah clarifies his position. He states that he has never served as a Board Member or Practitioner in-charge at Afrah International Hospital. This information, he asserts, can be verified through official channels such as the Registrar General’s Department and the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency, which maintain records of such appointments.
Dr. Omane Boamah goes on to emphasize that he is neither a partner nor a shareholder of the hospital, confirming that his association with Afrah International Hospital has been limited to part-time medical practice, a fact that is publicly known.
He urges all parties to refrain from casting doubt on the professional integrity of medical practitioners and their practice, highlighting the importance of separating political affiliations from healthcare matters, as diseases do not discriminate based on political beliefs.
“It is important to clarify that I have never served as a Board Member or a Practitioner in-charge at Afrah International Hospital. That fact can be verified from the Registrar General’s Department and the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency, the official repositories of such information.
“For the avoidance of any doubt let me add that I am neither a partner nor a shareholder of the hospital.
“I have only practised medicine part-time at the Afrah International Hospital, a matter of public knowledge. Anyone who doubts this information can search for the truth from the regulatory bodies mentioned above.
“We must understand that disease does not discriminate based on political affiliations. It does not know NDC or NPP.
“I therefore urge all to refrain from impugning the professional integrity of medical practitioners and their practice.”
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asserted its readiness to employ a robust IT system, backed by ample human resources and technical expertise, to bolster its chances of winning the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the newly-appointed Director of Elections for IT within the party, expressed confidence in their ability to secure electoral success through the deployment of this advanced IT system.
He highlighted that the system had already undergone successful testing during the party’s presidential primary and the Assin North by-election.
During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show on Thursday, September 14, Dr. Omane Boamah dismissed the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claims that they possessed an unbeatable strategy for the 2024 polls, emphasizing that the NDC could match figures like Joe Anokye, who heads the National Communications Authority (NCA) in terms of IT expertise when questioned by the show’s host, Osei Bonsu [Alias OB].
He said, “As we speak, their collated results for Assin North by-election is not ready although Joe Anokye was there. For instance, as I sit here, with my Smartphone, I know all that is happening in the 268 centers as far as the ongoing limited voter registration exercise is concerned.”
“But we don’t shout or talk about what we are doing. We did it seamlessly in our presidential primaries without noise. From there, we moved to Assin North, we’ve done it. Not that I am over-trusting the team that we have worked with, but as we speak, we’ve worked together for at least two years.”
Prior to his recent appointment as the Director of Elections responsible for IT, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah revealed that the team responsible for deploying the NDC’s IT system during its presidential primary and the Assin North by-election was led by Julius Debrah, the former Chief of Staff. This underscores their confidence in having a well-equipped and skilled human resource pool to effectively manage the IT aspect.
“Let me assure our people, that just as we didn’t make noise about the presidential primaries and the collation in Assin North, we’ll deliver.”
Asked whether he believes the NDC’s IT system is robust enough for the national elections, Dr. Omane Boamah retorted, “Don’t worry. I understand perfectly. Don’t forget that it was during my tenure as the Communication Minister, that we built the largest data centre in Africa in Ghana.”
“So, when it comes to robustness, when it comes to redundancy and even having mirror image, we built it such that whatever is happening in the building in Accra, there is a mirror image of it somewhere in Ghana. I believe when you leave government you keep your mouth shut on some of those state secrets. You only pass it on, so that if something bad happens, God forbid, Ghana can have disaster recovery in another region which is not even sharing boundaries with Greater Accra.”
“So, we won’t talk much. We’re only focused on getting the goals, and that’s why I have been appointed to lead the Election IT directorate. We’re working very hard. Some will say I am a Medical Doctor and not an IT person, but when we wrote those wonderful presidential speeches, those who enjoy it don’t care to find out what we know. There’s more than meets the eye.
“As a person, I have lived with internet engineers continuously for two weeks working on all kinds of things in the past. The inventors of the internet, Vinton Cerf and Bob Khan, they are Americans. I have met them, not once. Somewhere 2014 to 2015, when the ITU [International Telecommunications Union] selected 12 people to go and discuss the future of the internet in Brazil, I was one of the people selected from around the world. But must you wear this on your sleeve? No, you must live life like you don’t even know anything.”
The NPP’s victory in the 2016 and 2020 elections was often attributed to its effective and efficient collation of election results. Consequently, some opinions suggested that the NDC had somewhat neglected its responsibility of overseeing the electoral process and result collation due to perceived shortcomings in technical capacity and human resources.
Dr. Omane Boamah reaffirmed that, in addition to their robust IT system, the NDC’s comprehensive election strategy across all aspects of the polls would present formidable challenges for the NPP.
“Over the years, whatever we’ve done we let the collective own it. If we hadn’t come to opposition, who would have known Okudzeto Ablakwa was this prolific in investigations? It is teamwork, and we have a robust team that will deliver it. We still test the system, and we will stress test it with an avalanche of data, far more than it will receive on Election Day” he noted.
He was confident that the NDC is winning the 2024 elections.
“We’ll not lose. Trust me, I know what I am talking about. I am a student of research. I am telling you that the NDC will win the 2024 elections. I hardly rely on pollsters. I am relying on our own internal polls. I am saying that we will not lose the elections” he stressed as the host pushed further.
“It is the reason that when we see the artificial things that are being erected to try and narrow the gap, we fight them vehemently, and one of them is the limited voter registration that the EC is restricting to a few centres. It doesn’t even make sense, permit my saying…that when you were registering 500,000 people you used 1,500 locations, then if you say you’re now registering 1 million 350,000, you’ve rather reduced the centres to 268.”
