Election 2020: Kpessa Whyte confesses that Jean Mensa was innocent, blames defeat on failed NDC collation system

Prominent National Democratic Congress (NDC) member and University of Ghana political science lecturer, Professor Michael Kpessa Whyte, has confessed that the party’s flawed collation system, not Electoral Commission Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, was responsible for its 2020 election defeat.

In a message congratulating the NDC’s newly appointed officials, Professor Michael Kpessa Whyte, who was among the three witnesses testifying at the Supreme Court in 2021 in support of the election petition filed by the NDC’s unsuccessful presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, expressed that it would be unrealistic for party members to attribute the NDC’s 2020 election loss solely to the actions or inactions of the EC.

Below is the full post of Professor Michael Kpessa Whyte

“I wish to congratulate all the newly appointed officers for various positions in our party – the NDC ahead of the 2024 elections. The team is refreshingly solid, but they need our collective support to succeed. They harbor the seeds that will birth our victory, so let’s support them.

But I also wish to use the opportunity to address an issue that ought to be given attention if our fight to win is to succeed. It is an issue I want to bring to the attention of the new officers, especially Dr. Edward Omani Boamah, my classmate and friend for several years in his role as the Director of Elections for our party.

I opt to address this publicly because many have deluded themselves on account of the subject matter in a manner that is not helpful for our party.

Indeed, if our party, the NDC is truly desirous to win 2024, it would make sense for party officials and members to eliminate the delusion that elections are won from the EC strong room, and that we lost 2020 from the EC strongroom. Elections are won and lost at the polling stations.

How can a party that has admitted that it was unable to collate its 2020 results claim it lost from the strongroom?

Which result did the party give to its agents in the strongroom?

Why hasn’t the party put out its results if indeed there was one? What is there to gain from deluding ourselves into another defeat?

God forbids! Let’s own up to our collective mistakes and errors and stop the blame game. There is nothing to gain from self-delusion.

We must be truthful to ourselves. If we are serious about rescuing Ghana, then let’s stop trying to hide our collective negligence by blaming people who otherwise were sacrificing on the frontline for our cause. Sometimes, one gets the sense that some people in our party project their corrupted values on others and draw funny conclusions.

I recall, in those days in the EC strongroom, out of concern and worry that results from our party was not reaching us, I placed a message on one of the key NDC platform to ask for help, I was immediately advised to delete the message because it may fall in the hands of the NPP, and they will get to know we had a problem.

That advice got me thinking why on an internal party platform we can not trust ourselves, it made me wonder if we are truly serious for victory.

Not knowing that at the time the party’s results collation system had broken down, yet nobody even cared enough to inform us, but everyone was hoping we could bring victory. How unrealistic and pathetic can we be !

The current National Chairman, General secretary, and several others who contested for national positions were unequivocal that NDC was unable to collate results and used that as campaign messages in their respective contests.

So why do we ignore that truth and persist in trying to make it appear as though our problem was from the EC strongroom?

For instance, at a meeting with delegates from various constituencies in the Greater Accra region held in Prampram, on December 12, 2022, Hon. Fifi Kwatey was categorical that Rojo Mettle-Nunoo and Kpessa-Whyte could not, cannot, and should not be blamed for the electoral misfortunes of the NDC in 2020 elections.

Similar comments were heard in a widely circulated audio that is purported to have emanated from the campaigns of the former General Secretary and now National Chairman, Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

And for those who keep asking why the two agents left the EC strongroom at the same time, be careful what you ask for because you might not like the answers.

Do you honestly think Rojo and Kpessa-Whyte left the EC strongroom on their own without first discussing it with persons in position within the party hierarchy?

Are you aware the party through its lawyers brought a petition to the EC, and they refused to take it?

Do you know how we got there?  And who says at the time we were leaving the strong room, there was no NDC person there?

Our decision to remain silent in order to hold our party together has been taken to mean we are to be blamed, and surprisingly, some of those who are beneficiaries of our deliberate silence have joined the delusion for personal convenience.

After careful reflections, I have come to what is perhaps a belated conclusion, that continuous silence on such important issues might amount to doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result; and I see this time of new officers picking up the mantle in crucial positions and roles in our party, as probably the best time to start these conversations.

So, this piece is based on, and guided by the best of intensions, hoping that it will prompt some collective self-introspection and rude awakening across various levels of the party in our quest for victor in 2024.

We all want NDC and JM to win, but victory will not come if we continue to delude ourselves. Let’s speak openly about the institutional errors and systemic failures we encountered so that those in charge now, can benefit from that to improve their operations and help harvest the victory we are all desirous to see from the December 2024 elections. Enough of the pretense, John Mahama deserves better!”

  • NPP Primaries: Alan redrew to collaborate with Ken, their partnership may jeopardize our prospects in 2024 – NDC UK

NPP Primaries: Alan redrew to collaborate with Ken, their partnership may jeopardize our prospects in 2024 – NDC UK

The UK branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has advised exercising caution in the handling of Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary.

Kwame Owusu Achaiw, a prominent communicator, cautions that if not managed properly, the NDC could encounter an unforeseen challenge in the 2024 election.

The unsuccessful contenders are currently discussing whom to support on November 4, but I would need to consult my supporters first – Kwadwo Poku.

The Campaign Team confidently predicts that Kennedy Agyapong will secure a one-touch victory in the November 4 presidential primary.

The NDC communicator views Alan Cash’s withdrawal from the race as a politically strategic maneuver.

He explained to Daniel Dadson, the host of Frontline on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM in the United Kingdom, that Alan’s withdrawal is part of his collaboration with Kennedy Agyapong.

He further clarified that plans for Alan to partner with Kennedy Agyapong, should Kennedy be elected as the NPP’s presidential candidate, are well underway.

Eventually, he believes the pair will challenge the NDC.

“The NDC should exercise caution in the cases of Alan, Bawumia, and Ken. The NDC should exercise caution. Make a note of it somewhere; if Ken wins the race, he will partner with Alan. That is the strategy. That is the main reason Alan dropped out of the race,” he explained.

“Kennedy Agyapong and Alan have formed an alliance. If and only if Ken wins the race, he will team up with Alan.”

When asked if the partnership would jeopardise the NDC’s return to power, he replied, “I will say yes or no. There is a threat between Ken and Alan. But I don’t want to waste my time on Bawumia. The NDC should exercise extreme caution with Ken and Alan. It won’t be easy if we run in the election with these two. We will win, but it will be a close call.”

  • Banahene invites Alan to join NDC after withdrawal from NPP Primaries

Banahene invites Alan to join NDC after withdrawal from NPP Primaries

Member of the Communication team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Owusu Banahene, has extended an invitation to Alan Kyerematen, encouraging him to consider joining the opposition party.

Banahene’s recommendation comes in the aftermath of Mr. John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen’s withdrawal from the party’s race on September 5, 2023.

In a time of media engagement, the NDC member referred to a situation in which he asserted that a flagbearer of a political party could not resurrect their political aspirations after withdrawing from a race, similar to what Alan Kyeremanteng had done.

With this in mind, he declared, “Alan, the NDC welcomes you. Come and join us as we unite in the fight to rescue our country from the economic challenges that Bawumia and Akufo-Addo have led us into.”

Mr. John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position, has officially withdrawn from the party’s race, citing favoritism and intimidation as the primary reasons for his decision.

Mr. Kyerematen was one of the five candidates selected to compete for the party’s flagbearer position following the Special Delegates elections held on August 26, 2023, with the final contest scheduled for November 4.

In a statement released in Accra on Tuesday, Mr. Kyerematen expressed that the events surrounding the party’s Special Electoral College elections, both before and after, appeared to be “strategically and tactically” biased in favor of a specific aspirant. He further pointed out that statements made by some prominent party members, both prior to and after the elections, added weight to his choice to withdraw from the race.

The former Minister of Trade emphasized that the degree of intimidation, ranging from direct to indirect, imposed upon certain delegates at various voting centers across all sixteen regions, was unparalleled in the party’s history.

  • Political competition must aim for excellence and progress – Fifi Kwetey

Political competition must aim for excellence and progress – Fifi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has emphasized the necessity for a change in the dynamics of political competition.

He stressed that political parties should shift their focus towards achieving excellence, with Ghana as the ultimate beneficiary.

In an interview with the media, the General Secretary expressed his view, stating that “competition should persist, but it should no longer be a mere race for the NDC to outperform the NPP. Instead, it should be about the NDC doing what is necessary to make Ghana prosper and content.”

Expanding on the concept of competitiveness, he suggested that “when Ghana is genuinely content with our performance, our competitiveness against the opposition becomes a higher form of competition.”

Fifi Kwetey encouraged the NDC to rise above the common practice of comparing track records and start striving for excellence, rather than solely using the NPP’s disappointing track record as the benchmark, as he believes Ghana deserves better.

Addressing the disillusionment of the youth, he attributed their frustration to the perceived lack of trustworthiness, particularly displayed by the NPP, and the ongoing leadership failures across Africa that have led to recent coup attempts.

Fifi Kwetey also stressed the importance of allowing institutions to operate independently, with a notable mention of the Judiciary and the Electoral Commission.

He also introduced his new initiative, titled “Arise for Ghana,” an insightful online episodic series aimed at tackling critical issues related to leadership, governance, values, attitudes, and actions that influence national development. This series will be broadcast weekly on Fifi Kwetey’s and the NDC’s social media platforms.

  • 4 opposition parties, NDC, seek restraining order against voter registration process

4 opposition parties, NDC, seek restraining order against voter registration process

Five opposition political parties have collectively submitted an injunction aimed at suspending the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Convention People’s Party (CPP), People’s National Convention (PNC), and the All People’s Congress (APC) have united to seek legal action against what they perceive as the Electoral Commission’s unlawful and unreasonable decision to confine voter registration centers to their District Offices for the upcoming Limited Voter Registration exercise.

They argue that the Electoral Commission’s choice to limit voter registration centers to district offices could potentially disenfranchise numerous eligible voters, infringing upon their right to register and participate in public elections.

In the parties’ legal submission, they assert, “a declaration that, based on a proper interpretation of articles 45(a) and 42 of the constitution, the Electoral Commission’s decision to conduct the 2023 limited/continuous voter registration at the District offices rather than on the basis of electoral areas, would lead to voter suppression, particularly in rural constituencies of the country. Consequently, it is unconstitutional as it violates the rights of first-time voters to register and vote.”

  • EC dragged to court by NDC, 4 others over limited voter registration

EC dragged to court by NDC, 4 others over limited voter registration

On Thursday, September 7, five political parties, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), jointly filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Supreme Court.

This legal action comes in response to the EC’s decision to confine the upcoming limited voter registration exercise to its district offices.

The five political parties involved in the lawsuit are the NDC, the Convention People’s Party (CPP), All People’s Congress, Liberal Party of Ghana, and the Great Consolidated Popular Party.

These parties argue that the EC’s decision to limit voter registration centers to district offices could potentially disenfranchise many eligible voters, depriving them of their right to register and vote in public elections.

To address this issue, the parties have submitted an Application for Interlocutory Injunction, seeking to halt the EC’s planned limited voter registration exercise until a final decision is reached on the substantive matter.

This legal action is just the beginning of a series of steps that the parties plan to take in order to compel the EC to conduct the registration exercise at the electoral area level, ensuring that all eligible voters can access the process as outlined in Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution, Regulation 2(1)(2) of C.I 91, and the EC’s historical practices.

However, the Registrar of the Supreme Court has informed the Plaintiffs that the date for the hearing of the Application for Interlocutory Injunction will be determined on Monday, following instructions from the Chief Justice of the Republic.

In the meantime, the Electoral Commission has been served with the legal writ. The limited voter registration is scheduled to take place from September 12, 2023, to October 2, 2023, and will be conducted at all 268 district offices of the EC across the country, as announced by the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa.

New national executive members of the NDC sworn in

Eleven fresh members of the opposition National Democratic Congress‘ national executive committee have officially been inaugurated.

This swearing-in ceremony occurred at the party’s headquarters on September 6, 2023.

The new members encompass figures like Professor Joshua Alabi as Vice Chairman, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah as Director of Elections, and Edudzi Tamakloe as Director of Legal Affairs.

During his speech, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah urged these new members to meet their responsibilities effectively.

“Comrades, you are rising up today as patrons and the work you are going to do is daunting, but we trust that you will be able to live up to the challenge. There is no way you can constitute a governing team that will represent everybody, and we know there are shortcomings in this composition, but we are appealing to our party’s rank and file that this is a call to duty and not an honour. Wherever you are, you can find a way to help achieve the same purpose whether you are sworn in today or not.”

Eleven members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who were nominated to serve as members of the National Executive Committee, have been formally inaugurated into their respective roles.

The inauguration ceremony was conducted at the party’s headquarters on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

Among the newly appointed executives are Professor Joshua Alabi, who assumes the role of Vice Chairman, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, appointed as the Director of Elections for the Party, and Edudzi Tamakloe, who has taken up the position of Director of Legal Affairs.

Speaking to party members during the ceremony, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the NDC, not only urged the newly appointed executives to fulfill their responsibilities effectively but also emphasized that any efforts to thwart the desires of the people for a change in government would not be accepted.

“Comrades, you are rising up today as patrons and the work you are going to do is daunting, but we trust that you will be able to live up to the challenge. • I am not a member of any political party – Charlotte Osei shoots down NDC tag

I am not a member of any political party – Charlotte Osei shoots down NDC tag

Former chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Charlotte Osei, has explicitly stated that she has remained politically neutral before, during, and after her tenure at the elections management institution.

This comes after an accusation by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Buhari, who claimed the former EC Chair was affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Additionally, Buhari presented what he deemed evidence—a poster featuring Mrs. Osei, apparently indicating her intention to run as a parliamentary candidate under the NDC’s banner in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

In response, Charlotte Osei took to Twitter on September 4, 2023, to write; “I have NEVER been a parliamentary candidate or aspirant. For the records, I have also NEVER been a member of ANY political party. Please get your facts right.”

“It’s pretty easy to check who were the candidates in an election. And I am certain you have heard about graphic artistes. A poster with your picture and a party symbol does not make you a candidate,” Charlotte Osei added.

  • Flashback: ‘You are lucky you have me as President’ – Akufo Addo

Flashback: ‘You are lucky you have me as President’ – Akufo Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asserted that he represents the best choice for Ghanaians, despite facing harsh criticism from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and certain civil society organizations who have accused him of ineffectiveness and lack of competence.

“You are lucky you have me as president”, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said.

The President declared this stance while censuring the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for overlooking specific regions of the country when they hold political office.

Speaking to Chiefs and people during his tour to the Upper West and Savannah regions over this week, Nana Akufo Addo wondered why the Yapei-Kusawgu District was still underdeveloped even though they keep voting for the opposition party NDC.

“One of the things that surprise me and I have to confess, we have to speak the truth to each other; that Yapei – Kusawgu since 1992, I have known two people who have been Members of Parliament, the first one was my very good friend Amadu Seidu, when he left, the elder brother who is an excellent young man who is a minister for Natural Resources and MP for Damango, Abu Jinapor his elder brother John then took over the MP for Yapei – Kusawgu,” President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo told Chiefs and people of Yapei – Kusawgu.

“What this tells me is that the 8 elections conducted in Ghana since 1992 have always gone to the National Democratic Congress and yet when I come here, I hear all of these demands. The young man who for a long time was Deputy Minister of power, 17 communities in his district still have not been connected to electricity grid”, he added.

However, assuring the Chiefs and people gathered at the function, President Akufo-Addo hinted that, he is going to heed their cry because he is the best Ghanaians can have.

“But Yagbonwura, you are lucky, you have me as the President of Ghana. I’m going to do it for you. In the same way, no secondary school, no Senior Technical School, in the whole of Kusawgu area, ahhh, eiiiiiii”, he wondered.

“Yagbonwura I’m not here in a campaign, but I think I have said enough for you and your people Kusawgu to think about your vote in 2024”, he added.

  • Ablakwa pledges to expose corrupt politicians even under NDC govt

Ablakwa pledges to expose corrupt politicians even under NDC govt

Member of Parliament representing North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has made a firm commitment to persist in revealing government shortcomings, even when his political party holds power.

He emphasizes that this commitment is essential to ensure that the ultimate victory is for Ghana as a nation and not just for a select few individuals.

Mr Ablakwa conveyed this determination through a social media post, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the country’s well-being in every leadership endeavor. He believes that it’s high time every leader places the country’s interests at the forefront of their actions, striving to make Ghana a better place for all.

    Read his statement below;

May I take a moment to salute all the outstanding patriots occupying various important positions within government and the larger public service who put the national interest first by working with us at great risk to expose grand corruption, impunity, profligacy and state capture.

They are the real heroes worthy of celebration.

Shall we all commit to keeping them in our prayers, please.

Together, and without ever betraying these extraordinary nationalists collaborating with us, we shall save our country.

Already, our collaborative nationalistic efforts have saved suffering Ghanaian taxpayers billions of Ghana Cedis.

May I add that it is in our collective interest to encourage and deepen this culture even under the next NDC administration. When politicians and other public officials know their conduct and decisions cannot be hidden but will be subjected to strict standards of transparency and accountability, our democracy becomes truly hygienic and the public purse would therefore be genuinely protected so national resources can be redirected into creating better living conditions and opportunities for the people.

Ghanaians should expect more explosive scandals to be revealed in the coming days.

If the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government cannot stop creating scandals; we can also not stop exposing their scandals.

When the scandals stop — the exposés will stop.

    For God and Country.

  • COP Alex Mensah reveals how Bugri Naabu invited him under guise of ‘scouting for New IGP’

COP Alex Mensah reveals how Bugri Naabu invited him under guise of ‘scouting for New IGP’

Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah disclosed that he was summoned to the office of Bugri Naabu, the paramount chief of the Namong traditional area in the Northern Region, for a meeting that ultimately led to the leaked audio detailing plans to oust Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare.

He revealed that in the course of their meeting, Bugri Naabu explicitly stated that the present IGP, Dampare, would be discharged from his position in the near future. Therefore, he was actively seeking individuals who could assume the role once it became available.

At a committee hearing held on Friday, September 1, 2023, COP Alex Mensah recounted the circumstances in which one of his fellow police officers endorsed Bugri Naabu as a capable candidate for the position of Inspector General of Police (IGP).

“My going to Mr. Bugri Naabu was through his own invitation and the purpose was that the current IGP [George Akuffo Dampare], the probability that they are going to change him is high and they are looking for somebody who can do the job, and do it well.

“Bugri Naabu invited me because one of my boys, the police officers, had gone to tell him that if they were looking for a new Inspector General of Police (IGP), then the man that he thinks could do the job and do it well is COP George Alex Mensah. And Bugri Naabu said Oh, is that so? Then bring him and let me see him. That is why I [COP Alex Mensah] ended up at Bugri Naabu’s office,” he said.

COP Alex Mensah further disclosed that the utterances of Bugri Naabu gave him the impression that he was scouting for a new IGP because Akuffo Dampare would be sacked soon due to his poor management of the police service.

“My impression was that yes, he was scouting for a new IGP. He [Bugri Naabu] made it clear. And that is why I was even surprised about some of the audio, that is why I said the audio was edited because he said so many things about this current IGP what he has done, and what he’s not doing.

“The promise he [IGP Dampare] gave him [Bugri Naabu] has not been satisfied and the fact that the likelihood of him being changed is about 100%, so he is scouting for one person who can do the work well,” he narrated.

    Background:

A leaked audio recording, allegedly involving a Police Commissioner and a politician discussing a plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, has ignited public outrage.

In the said video, a Police Commissioner, who described himself as Mensa, was heard with Bugri Naabu, plotting the removal of IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare over fears he will be too firm in the 2024 elections. The Police Commissioner, who is said to be retiring, is heard telling the politician that the IGP is too firm and will not allow machinations in next year’s polls if he is not removed. He further notes that the nature of security the IGP provided during the Assin North by-election shows he will not allow any rigging in the polls.

“This IGP won’t help us. He won’t, he wants everything to be done fairly and we don’t win elections that way. If we don’t remove him, we can’t break the 8, in politics we need machinations and this IGP won’t allow that,” the Police Commissioner is heard saying.

The Parliament of Ghana has set up a 7-member committee to conduct a probe into the leaked tape after calls by the NDC Members of Parliament.

Proponents of the government have however stated that the allegations in the said tape should not be taken seriously because the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has no plans to change IGP Dr Geroge Akuffo Dampare.

  • NDC cautions govt against actions that may lead to a coup

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a warning to the government, urging it to avoid actions that might lead the country into a coup.

The coup in Gabon is the most recent in a series of coups that have occurred in recent years, following closely on the heels of a military takeover in Niger just a month ago.

The NDC emphasized the underlying causes of coups and advised the government to be attentive to the needs and concerns of the citizens.

General Secretary of the NDC, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, speaking to journalists in Accra, said, “Let the people decide who should be in charge. As opposed to this primitive obsession we have, that as soon as you have access to power, you must corrupt institutions, you must turn them into appendages.”

“You must destroy the businesses that support your opponents, you must create conditions that make it impossible for any other person to have a possibility of power. Yet at the same time, when you hear about a coup in another country, you jump into sending the military. Meanwhile, you are creating a situation that could lead to the same situation in your country.”

Certain individuals involved in coup attempts have cited governance shortcomings, unmet citizen entitlements, and widespread public frustration, among other factors, as reasons for their actions.

Meanwhile, thousands of Gabonese citizens and residents have taken to the streets in jubilation to mark the military coup in their nation.

As previously reported by Sahara Reporters, a group of Gabonese soldiers made a televised announcement on Wednesday morning, declaring their intent to “terminate the existing regime” and nullify the results of an election that, according to official reports, President Ali Bongo Ondimba had won.

Videos of Gabonese marching through the streets showed jubilant residents waving their national flag and thanking their military for liberating them.

However, Gabon’s president on August 30, called on “friends all over the world” to “make noise” over the coup in Gabon, in a clip that’s been circulating on social media.

Ali Bongo said: “My son is somewhere, my wife is in another place. Nothing is happening. I don’t know what is going on.”

  • I am in Ghana to serve the needs of my constituents – Gyakye Quayson

I am in Ghana to serve the needs of my constituents – Gyakye Quayson

The Member of Parliament representing the Assin North Constituency, James Gyakye Quayson, has expressed his contentment upon returning to Ghana after spending several years in Canada.

According to him, his purpose for returning is to serve the needs of his constituents, a move that brings him great satisfaction.

James Gyakye Quayson, previously the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Assin North by-election, achieved a triumphant victory in the recent polls.

The by-election, which took place on June 27, 2023, saw Mr. Quayson secure 17,245 votes, constituting an impressive 57.56 percent of the total votes cast.

This victory enabled him to surpass his opponents: Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

In the closely contested by-election, Charles Opoku garnered 12,630 votes, corresponding to 42.15 percent of the total votes cast, while Bernice Enyonam Sefenu from the LPG received a mere 87 votes, amounting to 0.29 percent of the total.

Mr. Quayson, who initially secured the seat in the 2020 polls with 17,498 votes, was removed from Parliament due to his dual citizenship status before filing his nomination forms.

The vacancy in the Assin North seat arose after the Supreme Court’s ruling on May 17, instructing Parliament to expunge Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records.

In an interview with the media, the legislator conveyed his happiness about revitalizing his constituency.

Despite facing daily challenges that posed setbacks, Mr. Quayson emphasized that these obstacles did not dissuade him from putting in vigorous effort to secure the seat. He underscored his unwavering determination and dismissed any fear of losing the by-elections.

However, it’s worth noting that the MP is currently entangled in a legal battle, facing allegations of forgery and perjury. The state has levied charges against him, including deceiving a public officer in contravention of section 251 (b) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960, Act 29.

Additionally, he is accused of forging a passport or travel certificate, in violation of section 15 (1)(b) of the Passports and Travel Certificates Act, 1967 (NLCD 155), as well as knowingly making a false statutory declaration, an offense under the Statutory Declarations Act, 1971, Act 389.

Furthermore, Mr. Quayson faces perjury charges under section 210 (1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960, Act 29, along with charges of making a false declaration for office as per section 248 of the same act, Act 29.

  • Irresponsible opposition – Prof Adei slams NDC over decision to picket at BoG HQ

Irresponsible opposition – Prof Adei slams NDC over decision to picket at BoG HQ

Former Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Prof. Stephen Adei, has criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) members in parliament.

The former chairperson of the National Development Planning Commission labelled the NDC Minority’s call for the resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, as a display of recklessness and irresponsibility.

According to Prof. Adei, the demand for the Governor and his deputies to step down lacks a proper understanding of the potential consequences.

“When the opposition talked about the governor resigning with his deputies. First of all they don’t know what they are talking about. If the governor and his deputies resign today, the impact will be gargantuan.

He stated that such abrupt resignations could have a substantial impact on currency depreciation and overall external confidence in the country’s financial system.

He expressed his concern about the opposition’s approach, referring to it as “irresponsible opposition.”

The NDC has expressed their intention to protest if the Governor of the BoG and his deputies do not resign within 21 days.

At a press conference held under the banner of the NDC’s “Moment of Truth” series on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, party accused Dr. Addison of overseeing the mishandling of the Bank’s affairs, resulting in a reported loss of GH¢60.8 billion during the fiscal year 2022.

“In this regard, we call for the resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank and his deputies within 21 days from today,” Dr. Forson said.

“We are resolved to embark on popular action to occupy the Central Bank and drive out the team of inept, callous and criminal mismanagers of the finances of this country and save the Bank of Ghana. The March to Ensure Accountability will begin in 21 days if the Governor of the Bank of Ghana does not do the needful and pack bags and baggage out of that sacred institution that he has so desecrated. Dr Ernest Addisson Must Go! There has to be an end to impunity and it is NOW!,” he added.

Prof. Adei suggested that a more responsible course of action would involve the NDC initiating a parliamentary inquiry into the matter before resorting to further steps.

He emphasized that the opposition’s current approach could exacerbate the country’s economic challenges.

In his view, the sensitive nature of financial matters calls for a measured and informed response, rather than immediate demands for resignations.

“This particular one is totally irresponsible, they are oblivious of the impact of what they are saying is done today. In the normal circumstance you will ask immediately for the commission of inquiry to establish the parameters and parliament has the right to do so.

“For example here we are able to tell its 250 million dollars while  its 250 million cedis. These things are so sensitive to the economy that you don’t say that if you don’t resign we are going to picket,” he stated.

  • You must scrap betting if you are not in favor – Malik Basintale tells gov’t

You must scrap betting if you are not in favor – Malik Basintale tells gov’t

The Deputy Communications Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has urged the government to eliminate all forms of betting and gaming in the country if it does not endorse the involvement of young individuals in such activities.

He recommended that the government clarify its stance on betting, as the rationale behind implementing the 10% tax is not well-received by the youth.

The introduction of a 10% betting tax, part of the government’s strategy to generate revenue, has been met with criticism and apprehension.

Malik Basintale expressed reservations about the implementation of the 10% betting tax and criticized the government for its engagement in gambling.

In an interview with the media, Malik Basintale argued that, “the Gaming Commission Act said gambling is a game of chance, and a game to have fun. The government that brought this Act can repeal it at any point in time. Government is the biggest gambler in the country. The government through the lotteries authority manages gambling in this country. The president appoints a CEO to gamble with the people of this country. The government doesn’t see the need to repeal that Act. The government doesn’t see the need to close down the entire lottery system. But they think that by imposing punitive taxes on this service, they will move a lot of people out of it.”

“How does this tax frighten any youth out of this betting? The 21 new taxes you introduced, was that your intention to frighten businesses? If you think you don’t support the position of young people in this country betting, then abolish it. So that we will know that you don’t like it, it should be clear, the moral definition or the moral explanation to this doesn’t fly for me because there’s a law backing it”.

He criticized the government’s “irresponsible” assumption that their tax would drive young individuals away from the betting industry without offering alternatives.

“Your 10% tax means that go and bet, and when you win, give me 10%. And that is your idea of chicken people out of the betting industry. How irresponsible that thought can be, taxing betting is not a responsible measure of pushing people out of it. There are other alternatives you could choose from,” Malik Basintale pointed out.

The NDC Deputy Communications Officer also criticized the government for subjecting bettors to double taxation, arguing that they are already taxed through the e-levy.

He called upon the government to permit young people to make their own choices regarding participation in betting, emphasizing that there is a legal foundation supporting it.

“That factor of immorality should be left up to the individual’s reasoning.”

  • NDC’s Magoo calls for removal of 10% tax on betting, deems it youth’s seed capital

NDC’s Magoo calls for removal of 10% tax on betting, deems it youth’s seed capital

A member of the Communications Team for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Margret Ansei,  also recognized as Magoo, has strongly criticized the government’s recent implementation of a 10% withholding tax on earnings from betting and lottery activities.

She contends that betting serves as a channel for young individuals to generate initial investment funds, and the imposition of taxes on it would exacerbate their financial struggles.

“I think there should be some consideration around it,” she said.

Expressing her concerns, according in a metrotvonline.com news report, Magoo vehemently opposed the new tax, which the government stated is intended to discourage youth involvement in betting.

“There are no jobs. The rate of unemployment is so high. The Ghanaian youth has nothing doing so when they wake up aside [from] social media and other things, the other means of survival is through this betting.

“I don’t really know how much they do it what they put into it and so ever. But if someone gets a little from betting and can probably use it to start a business (I don’t know how much they get) but if you can get GHS2000, GHS3000 from you can go to farming with it or someone can start an online business or something with it and you are taxing and taxing the gross and taxing 10% we think it is so outrageous and the government must consider it,” she argued.

Magoo criticised the current taxation strategy of the government, asserting that it contradicts the promises made by the Akufo-Addo administration during its campaign.

She emphasised that policies and actions should prioritise the national interest and the well-being of the people, especially considering Ghana’s predominantly young population.

“This is a people-centred democracy so policies and everything should be about the national security and the national interest. Where’s the national interest? The people. This is a country where 60% of its people are below 60 years per the Ghana Statistical Service [report] so, the youth are into it.

“You are taxing the gaming institutions already. The young man who has let’s say GHS50 and has gone to bet and gotten let’s say GHS2,000; I mean taking 10%,” she said.

The 10% withholding tax on gross gaming profits took effect on August 15, 2023. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) announced that each wager would no longer be subject to the previous 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) rate. Instead, the earnings from each successful bet would be subject to withholding tax.

The GRA’s Commissioner of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division, Edward Gyamerah, emphasised the enforcement of the new regulations. He stated that gaming corporations must adhere to the updated rules and withhold 10% of the winnings for remittance to the GRA.

  • NDC accuses EC of attempting to suppress votes with district-level registration

NDC accuses EC of attempting to suppress votes with district-level registration

Deputy Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, holds the opinion that the Electoral Commission’s (EC) choice to conduct voter registration solely in district offices for individuals aged 18 and above is an unfavorable decision.

He contended that the move is essentially a form of voter suppression intended to hinder and suppress votes.

This week, the Electoral Commission announced that voter registration for individuals aged 18 and above will take place from Tuesday, September 12 to Monday, October 2, 2023.

The EC further announced that the exercise will be conducted at all 268 district offices across the nation.

The commission said that the District Level Elections will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

Apart from the Nkoranza North and Nkoranza South districts in the Bono East Region where the elections will not take place, all other Electoral Areas totalling 6,272 will have their elections on December 19.

The Electoral Commission is hoping to register 1,350,000 new voters by the close of the Registration exercise this year.

In response, Ako Gunn remarked that this is a big challenge because it will prevent some new unregistered voters from registering.

He told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the best method would be for the EC to facilitate registration in all polling centres across the country.

He stated that some villages have residents who live far from the district offices and must travel by boat, bus, or other methods to go to the district offices.

He stated that “only in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi and other cities are district offices closer to the people.” However, in certain Ghanaian communities, residents must travel by boat, canoe, or bus to reach the district offices. We have not registered new voters for the past three years, so you can anticipate the number of new voters who will participate in the election.

These are some of the issues we’ve had with the EC, and our point is that we shouldn’t be doing this. The registration exercise should extend to all centres rather than just their district offices. Even if we organise the registration process in a week, it must include all of the centres.”

“Sometimes they make things so difficult for political parties that it’s as if they (EC) don’t care,” he continued. All of this has been planned on purpose to prevent more voters from voting because the candidate for whom they are working would not be defeated.”

He stated that the NDC has spoken to branch and constituency executives to conduct meetings and ensure that Ghanaians are informed about the registration since the EC will not do so.

“These concerns we have raised are not about the NDC or the NPP,” he stated. This will not happen if you have no malevolent intentions or believe in justice. That is the pitiful aspect of the current EC Commissioner.”

  • NPP communicators paid GHC1000 to defend Bank of Ghana – Eric Adjei reveals

NPP communicators paid GHC1000 to defend Bank of Ghana – Eric Adjei reveals

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Director of Communications for the Bono Region,  Eric Adjei, has accused the New Patriotic Party of bribery over the construction of the new Bank of Ghana (BoG) headquarters.

In an interview on the Kokroko show on Peace FM, Mr Adjei claimed that communicators of the ruling party received cash from the Central Bank to argue for the construction of its headquarters.

According to him, NPP Communicators were paid GHS1000 to convince Ghanaians of the need for the construction of a new headquarters.

“The NPP is doing something, the way they are doing things, it may lead to the elimination of the moral aspect.

“When this Bank of Ghana issue surfaced, one Opata, I don’t know whether he is a PRO or not. He came to meet NPP communicators. Be honest to yourself, don’t lie.

“They gave the communicators GHS1000 so they lie about the details, you are being dishonest to yourselves. You are a Bank of the nation and not a political party,” he said.

The Central Bank of Ghana has provided justification as to why the institution is investing $250 million in a new headquarters amidst an economic crisis.

In a press statement, the Bank of Ghana explained that the need to construct a new headquarters stems from the threat of seismic activity.

According to the Central Bank, its current structure, built in the 1960s, lacks structural integrity, and is therefore incapable of withstanding an earth tremor.

This comes after the Minority in Parliament questioned the investment being made by the Bank of Ghana under the supervision of Governor Dr Ernest Addison.

Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson at a National Democratic Congress (NDC) press conference on Tuesday, August 8, labelled the Bank of Ghana as insensitive over its decision.

The ongoing project is a 21-storey structure situated in Ridge, adjacent to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge.

The project, said to be approximately 50% finished, has been awarded to De Simone Limited.

Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Kingsley Nyarko, for the umpteenth time justifying why Dr Bawumia is the best candidate to be elected as flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview on Peace FM, he stated the Vice President has both the country and the NPP at hand.

“I’m for Baumia because of the future of this party, because of the stability of this country, and I also believe that the man is competent and can win the race for us, going to face Mahama,” he said.

He asserted that the race is between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) whom he said is being represented by Goliath – John Dramani Mahama, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who is being represented by the David – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and shared the strong conviction that Dr Bawumia will emerge winner of the presidential primaries and well as the 2024 general elections.

“I believe David, Bawumia, will defeat Goliath, Mahama,” he added.

  • Taxing betting a lazy approach to generate revenue – NDC

Taxing betting a lazy approach to generate revenue – NDC

The Deputy Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga, has criticized the government’s imposition of a 10% tax on winnings from betting and lotteries.

He labeled this taxation approach as a lazy means of generating revenue, often associated with incompetent administrations.

Speaking to the media, Mr Ayariga expressed his disapproval of the tax, deeming it unjust and harsh on Ghanaian youth who heavily rely on betting for their livelihoods.

He asserted that the tax is biased, favoring foreign businesses over Ghanaian citizens due to the existing tax regime.
Ayariga contended that if foreign companies can deduct losses and pay taxes only on profits, it’s unfair that ordinary citizens aren’t allowed the same privilege. He criticized the government’s approach of deducting a percentage from a single win, deeming it simplistic.

Ayariga highlighted that a more comprehensive taxation system, where the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) profiles and calculates individual profits and losses, would be a fairer solution.

Furthermore, he criticized the government’s concerns about addiction, sarcastically suggesting that addiction to issues like corruption, lies, deception, and theft within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should be the focal point of discussions.

  • Sammy Gyamfi clarifies ‘NDC would tax bet winnings’ comment

Sammy Gyamfi clarifies ‘NDC would tax bet winnings’ comment

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi, has denied claims that he indicated before the 2020 general elections that a future NDC government would impose taxes on profits from sports betting.

He explained that his statement had been misinterpreted by members of the ruling New Patriotic Party to support the imposition of the controversial 10% tax on betting and lottery winnings introduced by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb, the NDC communications officer explained that he only suggested that the NDC would consider implementing a tax system on sports betting similar to that of the United Kingdom (UK).

“In response to a question on how the NDC intends to fund the Sports Development Fund we promised in our 2020 manifesto, I indicated in the said interview, that that the NDC will consider imposing a tax on sports betting ‘as it’s done in the UK’.

“The question every objective mind ought to ask, therefore, is what pertains in the UK relative to taxation on sports betting? The answer is simple! In the UK, bet winnings are not taxed. Rather, bet companies are heavily taxed. See https://www.newbettingsites.co/articles/how-much-tax-do-betting-companies-pay/,” parts of the statement reads.

He added that the tax on sports betting in the UK is way different from the 10% tax the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government has placed on bet winnings.

“This is the example I cited and indicated that a future NDC government will consider post 2020. The new 10% tax on bet winnings that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government has introduced is the direct opposite of what pertains in the UK and the position I canvassed in 2020. Don’t be misled!” he said.

The NDC communications officer reiterated that his party is totally opposed to the 10% tax on bet earnings introduced by the current government.

    Read the full statement below:

My attention has been drawn to desperate attempts by some NPP social media activists to put a spin on a comment I made about sports betting in the run up to the 2020 elections.

In response to a question on how the NDC intends to fund the Sports Development Fund we promised in our 2020 manifesto, I indicated in the said interview, that that the NDC will consider imposing a tax on sports betting “as it’s done in the UK”.

The question every objective mind ought to ask therefore, is what pertains in the UK relative to taxation on sports betting?

    The answer is simple!
In the UK, bet winnings are not taxed. Rather, bet companies are heavily taxed. See https://www.newbettingsites.co/articles/how-much-tax-do-betting-companies-pay/

This is the example I cited and indicated that a future NDC government will consider post 2020. The new 10% tax on bet winnings that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government has introduced is the direct opposite of what pertains in the UK and the position I canvassed in 2020. Don’t be misled!

    For the sake of clarity and emphasis, the NDC is vehemently opposed to the 10% tax that has been imposed by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government on bet winnings;

    1. Sports betting although undesirable, has become a necessary evil given the state of hopelessness, joblessness and excruciating hardships that Ghanaian youths have been plunged into by the insensitive and reckless Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government.

    2. Taxing bet winnings under the current excruciating economic conditions Ghanaians are facing, particularly, the high rate of inflation of 43.1% and the highest unemployment rate among others, is insensitive and totally unacceptable.

    3. Government should be innovative in its bid to increase tax revenue and stop this lazy approach to taxation. If government is minded to raise tax revenue from betting, its focus should be on taxing multinational/foreign bet companies as it pertains in the UK and other jurisdictions and not poor Ghanaian youths who have been compelled by the harsh economic conditions in the country to seek refuge in sports betting for their very survival.

    4. More importantly, the new 10% tax on bet winnings introduced by the NPP contravenes the government’s social contract with Ghanaians. That social contract is to the effect that; “taxation is a lazy approach to governance” and that an NPP government will “reduce the tax burden on Ghanaians” and move the country from “taxation to production”.

Contrary to this promise, the current NPP government has introduced over 25 tax handles since they took office in 2017- a clear betrayal of the trust of Ghanaians. These taxes have conspired to make life unbearable for the vast majority of Ghanaians, particularly the youths who can’t find jobs.

The NDC will not and cannot lend its support to the double-standards the NPP continuous to display relative to taxation, particularly at this time of unprecedented hardships.

    5. Undoubtedly, Sports Betting has become a refuge for the millions of Ghanaian unemployed youths who have been compelled by the economic mismanagement of the NPP to depend on betting for survival. Imposing a 10% tax on bet winnings is therefore cruel. Given the difficult times we find ourselves in, the NDC fully supports calls for the immediate scrapping of the newly introduced 10% tax on bet winnings.

This is the official position of the great NDC on the newly-introduced 10% tax on bet winnings.

  • BoG HQ project handed to unregistered construction firm – Ablakwa

BoG HQ project handed to unregistered construction firm – Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament representing North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has brought to light a significant surge in the expenses associated with the new Bank of Ghana (BoG) headquarters.

The project’s original estimated cost of $80 million has skyrocketed to an astonishing $250 million at the present juncture.

In an extensive message posted on his Facebook account, Ablakwa also asserted that a construction company, designated through a singular-source procurement process by the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) for the venture, lacks proper registration within the country.

This startling disclosure has deepened suspicions surrounding irregularities and potential improprieties throughout the selection and authorization procedure.

The MP for North Tongu further emphasized that a distinct company was granted PPA approval for overseeing project management services a full three months before its official registration.

Ablakwa also rejected assertions that the decision to construct a fresh headquarters for the Central Bank originated during the prior National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

“From the intercepted documents, procurement for the project did not commence under the NDC or during the tenure of Hon. Ato Forson as Board Member, neither did it start during the presidency of H.E. John Mahama, contrary to the vicious fabrications by some desperate NPP apologists.

    “The BoG’s unacceptable use of the Restricted Tendering Method amounts to a blatant violation of the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663) as amended in Act 914. Section 38 of Act 663 provides a limited scope for the use of Restricted Tendering in circumstances where goods, services or works are available only from a limited number of suppliers or contractors;

    “From the intercepted documents, the BoG handpicked the following companies: i) Messrs. WBHO Ghana Limited, ii) Messrs. Man Enterprise, iii) Messrs. DeSimone Limited, iv) Messrs. Ronesans Holdings and v) Messrs. Goldkey Properties;

“It is not clear what criteria the BoG used in selecting its preferred 5 companies when Ghana’s built environment can boast of many established and celebrated construction firms such as Consar, Berock, Maripoma, Mawums, M. Barbisotti, First Sky, Antartic, Ussuya, Regimanuel, and so on and so forth.”

Pius Hadzide expresses disbelief at NDC’s protest against gaming tax

CEO of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Pius Enam Hadzide, has strongly criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in response to their objections towards the 10% betting tax.

The implementation of the 10% betting tax, a component of the government’s revenue generation initiatives, has been met with critique and apprehension.

In a communication endorsed by the National Youth Organizer, George Opare Addo, the youth division of the NDC issued a statement outlining a sequence of measures aimed at pressuring the government into retracting the 10% betting tax.

The decision comes in response to what the party perceives as a burdensome taxation policy that unfairly impacts the country’s youth and the broader betting industry.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Selorm Adonoo, Pius Hadzie stated, “I’m pretty much scandalised listening to NDC, with the impression they are creating. If there is a problem with employment, in NDC’s view, young people should resort to betting, as a means of resolving whatever challenges young people are confronted with. I’m scandalised.”

“Let me just place it on record that, it is not just the Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who has issues with betting and what betting can do to the value system of any country, even the Minority Leader, Ato Forson has called on the state to ban all forms of betting”.

The CEO of NYA lambasted the NDC for instigating the youth to fight the government.

“The young people are being prepared for the future and if you want to lead the country, you should be discussing policies and not that there are hardships, young people should resort to betting, a game of luck, a game of chance. And that we are not going to encourage the Ghanaian youth who are hardworking, entrepreneurs, by the way, to continue to work hard.”

Pius Hadzide admitted that Ghana, like other developing countries, is also confronted with youth unemployment, but assured that the government is putting in measures to mitigate the issue.

“I do admit that just like other developing countries, there are challenges, youth unemployment, issues of education, issues of health…for the first time in this country, the young people of this country are now getting hope. Today, due to free SHS, hundreds of thousands of young people whose future would have been truncated at the basic level, are now in secondary schools,” the NYA CEO said.

Niger coup: Prevent our soldiers from facing untimely deaths – Sam George to Akufo-Addo

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has cautioned President Akufo-Addo against hastily engaging in a military intervention in Niger in the wake of the recent coup.

He has urged the President to avoid putting Ghanaian soldiers’ lives at risk.

Using Twitter as his platform, the MP emphasized that Ghana’s military currently stands as a testament to the commitment and professionalism of the nation’s officers.

However, he expressed concern that the government has not adequately invested in the necessary tools and equipment to support them.

He wrote, “Dear President @NAkufoAddo, you know better than us all the pitiful state of our armed forces for foreign military intervention in another sovereign state. You know that despite the professional attitude and disposition of our gallant officers, you have failed to retool and equip our forces. Do not send them to untimely useless death!”

Invoking international law, the lawmaker cited Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits any state from taking illegal actions that undermine the sovereignty of another nation.

He also challenged the notion of military intervention being considered by President Akufo-Addo and other West African leaders within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“Article 2(4) of the UN Charter prohibits the illegal action you and your cronies in ECOWAS are considering. Even if you wanted to hide under Article 42, do you have a UNSC resolution authorising an intervention? There is no clear evidence of the 3-basis required to trigger R2P so respect the sovereignty of Niger,” he stated.

He advocated for a more pragmatic approach involving non-kinetic measures to engage, rather than an aggressive stance aimed at appeasing external powers. He insisted that any decision to involve the Ghana Armed Forces in a senseless war should require the approval of Parliament, emphasizing the demand for the same.

Sam George further recommended focusing the nation’s limited resources on improving the living conditions of Ghanaians and refraining from interfering in other countries’ affairs. He concluded by using the phrase “‘Dzi wo fie asem’ Mr President,” which translates to “Mind your business, Mr. President.”

Party contractors are not paid because they support me – Dr. Owusu Afriyie

A contender for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has strongly criticized the party’s leadership for its handling of the ongoing race to select the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.

During an interview with the media, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, accused the party’s leadership of displaying bias in their approach to dealing with individuals who are disregarding the party’s rules.

He expressed concern that the unfolding events in the campaign for the primaries are indicative of a lack of discipline within the NPP.

He highlighted that while high-ranking officials within the party and the government openly endorse a particular candidate without facing repercussions, those who declare their support for him and other candidates are facing punitive measures.

“There is some sort of force being used – intimidation… those contractors who do not seem to be for this candidate are not paid when they complete their jobs. And they have taken huge sums of money from the banks and the interest rates are 35%, 40%. They are not paid and are being punished for supporting someone else.”

“But if somebody has done a job or a contract with the government, and they are not paid, while are those who declare for that particular candidate are paid,” he said.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto made allegations about contractors who are openly supporting certain candidates in the race being denied payment for their work.

He claimed that these contractors are being subjected to some form of coercion and intimidation, resulting in their non-payment, despite having completed their contracts.

He stated that these contractors have borrowed substantial amounts from banks with high interest rates and are consequently suffering financial hardships due to the lack of payment and the associated interest costs.

The NPP is currently conducting its presidential primaries, with ten individuals vying for the position.

The primaries are scheduled for August and November 2023. A super delegate conference is planned for August 26, 2023, to narrow down the number of contenders to five, while the main primaries are set to take place on November 4, 2023, to select the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 elections.

The list of candidates includes notable figures such as Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, energy expert Kwadwo Poku, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, former General Secretary of the NPP Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Offinso North Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko.

Akufo-Addo’s intention to deploy Ghanaian troops to Niger the best – Kennedy Agyapong

Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency and Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has expressed his support for the deployment of Ghanaian troops to Niger if the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decides on a military intervention.

ECOWAS has urged member states to establish a standby force as a potential solution to the crisis in Niger.

The regional body aims to secure the release of President Mohamed Bazoum from house arrest and reinstate him as the constitutionally-elected head of state.

Scheduled for August 17, ECOWAS’ Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff will meet in Accra to determine the best course of action for restoring constitutional order in Niger.

In an interview with the media, Agyapong, a former member of the ECOWAS Parliament, asserted that a combined West African military effort would act as a deterrent to other states in the sub-region.

“We have an obligation as Ecowas countries and you cannot run away from it,” he said.

He highlighted that ECOWAS member countries have a responsibility to address such situations and prevent coup attempts. Agyapong emphasized that the situation in Niger should be used as an example to discourage future coup d’état attempts, considering the increasing frequency of such incidents in the region.

“should serve as a deterrent because coups d’etat is becoming rampant in Ecowas so we should use Niger to serve as a deterrent and say anybody who tries again, Ecowas will come after them and this is not the first time”.

Recognizing Ghana’s vital contribution to the force, he labeled Ghana as the second most significant country in West Africa and stressed the nation’s importance within ECOWAS.

“In fact, the second most important country in West Africa is Ghana. I’ve been an Ecowas member [of Parliament] before so it is an obligation.”

Agyapong asserted that allowing coups to occur within the sub-region could have serious consequences for political stability, leading to arrests, dissolution of parliaments, and curbs on press freedom.

“If we make a mistake and we allow coups d’etat all over West Africa, tomorrow it will be me and you and the first thing is that the two of us will go to jail first before anybody.

“They will dissolve Parliament, they will arrest journalists, check all the coups. So, the security of this county is very very important and no matter the amount of money prevention is better than cure. Prevention will not cost you as much as you are curing it,” he added.

He emphasized the significance of prioritizing security and prevention measures to avoid costly remedies.

  • I didn’t lose 2020 parliamentary election – John Dumelo

    I didn’t lose 2020 parliamentary election – John Dumelo

The candidate representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, John Dumelo, has claimed that he did not lose the 2020 parliamentary election.

He maintained that he considers himself the winner, as he was not far from securing the constituency’s seat.

Dumelo emphasized that his party achieved the best results in the constituency’s history, leading him to refrain from terming it a loss.

He has also expressed his determination to secure victory in the upcoming 2024 elections, highlighting that although his team faced defeat in 2020, they have since formulated strategies to succeed.

“In my perspective, we emerged victorious in the 2020 election. We achieved unprecedented results in the history of Ayawaso West Wuogon. Progress is often marked by initial steps. Shortly after assessing the results, we analyzed and devised plans for winning the forthcoming election,” he elaborated.

Talent manager and entertainment pundit, Mr. Logic has stated that the actor will experience a second defeat in his bid against his contender Lydia Alhassan.

According to him John Dumelo’s demeanor appears to be marked by arrogance and excessive self-assurance, as he because he believes to be the preferred choice of the people.

Mr Logic added that Dumelo’s focus seems to be more on showcasing himself as a member of parliament to validate a certain perspective.

“I was happy Fred Nuamah was contesting John Dumelo, He is boastful and overconfident, he feels to be the people’s favorite and I wanted Fred to prove a point that the people can change. Fred’s withdrawal makes me think he is not confident, however, I personally love Fred Nuamah to John Dumelo”

“If I had the right to vote in that constituency, my choice was Fred Nuamah. Apart from John Dumelo being a hard worker, politically I feel his just hopeful to be an MP to prove a point and my research shows John Dumelo will lose for the second time. The people already have their candidates and my research shows John isn’t the favorite”.

In 2020, the actor-turned-politicia strived to assume leadership in the constituency through a heated parliamentary rivalry with the incumbent, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

Mrs. Alhassan stepped into the role previously held by her deceased husband, Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko, when she participated in and triumphed in the parliamentary election in January 2019.

Based on preliminary results, Lydia Alhassan of the NPP secured 39,851 votes, while Dumelo of the NDC followed closely in second place with 37,778 votes.

Meanwhile, Mr Dumelo has issued a caution to his former 2020 advising her to brace herself for a defeat in the upcoming 2024 elections.

In a tweet he stated “Lydia Seyram Alhassan, your downfall is next!”

  • Churches engaging in ‘silly lifestyles’ must be shutdown – Pastor Oduro to govt

Head Pastor and Founder of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has criticized specific types of churches that government should take immediate action to shutdown.

While not naming these churches, he highlighted their unchristian activities and behaviors, suggesting they deviate from true religious practices.

In a viral video, the outspoken preacher emphasized that certain churches engage in practices like creating concoctions from items such as pomades and fragrances, which they sell to people under the pretense of possessing special properties.

He pointed out that these actions reflect a lack of seriousness and a departure from genuine spirituality.

Prophet Kofi Oduro expressed concern over leaders of such churches who participate in absurd activities, such as lying on the floor and dancing to secular songs during worship.

He criticized the impact such behaviors have on people’s perceptions of church teachings and the implications for non-believers.

He further highlighted the display of items like Schnapps and fly whisks (bodua) within church premises as examples of these unorthodox practices.

He directed some blame towards the government for allowing such activities to persist and contrasted this with Rwanda’s stringent regulations on church establishment, which require formal education as a prerequisite.

In Rwanda, he noted, individuals must hold a first-degree qualification to start a church, as education is seen as enhancing critical thinking and reducing the likelihood of unscrupulous practices within religious institutions.

NDC Youth Wing demands reversal of 10% bet tax

The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded that the government immediately rescinds its 10% withholding tax on all betting, games and lottery wins, which took effect from August 15, 2023

According to the group, the tax measure is a “burdensome and insensitive policy.”

To ensure the government reverses the tax measure, the NDC Youth Wing has threatened to undertake a number of diplomatic initiatives to persuade government.

The group will first picket at the Ministry of Finance and occupy government offices across the country, and later start and scale up nationwide conventional and unconventional lawful agitations as a measure of resistance.

Also, the NDC Youth Wing plans to occupy Parliament and other government agencies.

According to the group in a press statement dated August 16, these actions will “ensure our voices are heard.”

“Our unity is unwavering, and our determination to protect the funds young people secure through betting is unyielding,” the statement added.

  • NDC to protest against 10% tax on betting

NDC to protest against 10% tax on betting

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth wing has unveiled a series of strategies aimed at pressuring the government to retract the imposed 10% tax on betting.

The move follows concerns that this taxation policy disproportionately burdens the country’s youth and the wider betting industry.

The implementation of the 10% betting tax, intended to generate revenue, has faced criticism and opposition.

NDC youth activists assert that this tax places an unfair burden on young Ghanaians who engage in betting for entertainment and sometimes as a source of income.

The National Youth Organiser of the NDC, George Opare Addo, issued a press statement expressing the party’s discontent with the tax. He stated, “We are resolute in safeguarding the earnings that young people acquire through betting.

Through protests, advocacy, civic engagements, and demonstrations, we will ensure our concerns are heard and demand that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government reverses its decision.”

The statement outlined their planned actions, which include staging protests at the Ministry of Finance and occupying government premises nationwide. They intend to initiate lawful demonstrations both conventionally and unconventionally, aiming to intensify the resistance against the tax.

The statement also mentioned efforts to mobilize young individuals to confront government officials and call for an end to perceived corruption and insensitivity within the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.

Additionally, they plan to occupy the Parliament and other government agencies.

  • Contest with Fred Nuamah wasn’t needless – John Dumelo

Contest with Fred Nuamah wasn’t needless – John Dumelo

Ghanaian actor, politician, and NDC candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuguon constituency, John Dumelo, has emphasised that the competition between him and Fred Nuamah held significant importance.

He made this assertion while discussing his political ambitions on TV3.

Addressing the rivalry between himself and his friend, John Dumelo emphasised that introducing a new NDC candidate for that specific constituency would have been detrimental.

‘I didn’t mind the contest, but I felt like a contest wasn’t needed. It wasn’t necessary because the party looked at Ayawaso West as a different case, because I had contested in 2020.

“We did extremely well, we nearly won, and we lost by a small margin. So it would have been suicidal to change the candidate. So, in a democracy, a lot of negotiations had to go on.

“As a Democratic party, you had to sit down and do your research, you had to decide that, for this place, let’s change this person, and so on,” he stated.

John Dumelo was chosen as the NDC’s official candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuguon Constituency on Sunday, August 13.

This marks his second consecutive bid for the position.

Prior to this, he encountered resistance from his close friend and fellow NDC party comrade, Fred Nuamah, who initially expressed his own interest in competing for the seat.

However, in a new twist of events, Fred decided to withdraw from the race and throw his support behind John Dumelo.

  • NDC accuse Lydia Alhassan of diverting Common Fund for political ventures

NDC accuse Lydia Alhassan of diverting Common Fund for political ventures

The Ayawaso West Wuogon branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has leveled allegations against Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the current Member of Parliament for the constituency, asserting that she has utilized the common fund of the district assembly to finance her political undertakings.

According to the party, the intended purpose of the fund, which is aimed at tackling developmental issues within the constituency’s regions, is not being adhered to.

In a conversation with Citi News, Bismark Aborbi Aryitey, the NDC’s chairman in Ayawaso West Wuogon, mentioned that Alhassan has not provided a clear record of the common fund’s usage.

“Definitely, she has the common fund that she has not accounted for. I am a stakeholder in this constituency. There is no occasion where Lydia Alhassan has even met the Landlord Association to tell them that the common fund that came, I believe this gutter is worrying you, so let me fix it for you.”

“So, it is the common fund that is being spread in the constituency, especially spent on NPP members. However, Ghanaian voters are now discerning.”

Meanwhile, the leadership of the NDC at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency has endorsed the candidature of actor-turned-farmer, John Dumelo, ahead of the 2024 general elections.

In a statement signed by the constituency chairman, Bismark Aborbi-Ayitey, the party disclosed that the other two aspirants in the race, Fred Nuamah and Kojo Adu Owusu, have agreed to step down to allow Dumelo to represent the NDC in next year’s elections.

One of the aspirants, Fred Nuamah withdrew from the race on August 8 and pledged his unflinching support for Mr. Dumelo.

The party also called on the general public and supporters of the NDC to rally behind Dumelo to snatch the seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 polls.

  • Frances Essiam takes NDC’s Beatrice Annan to the cleaners for comments against NPP members

Frances Essiam takes NDC’s Beatrice Annan to the cleaners for comments against NPP members

Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana was set ablaze on Monday, August 15, as a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Frances Essiam, took aim at Beatrice Annan, a member of the opposing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mrs Essiam’s response was in reaction to a claim made against the NPP as well as some astute members of the party by Beatrice which the former deemed very inappropriate.

Beatrice, while making her submission on the show, described the NPP as a ‘criminal’ party, and further attempted to claim that the Bank of Ghana working in concert with the Economic Management Team of Government were lawless resulting in the GHC 60.8 billion loss the Bank of Ghana (BoG) made in the 2022 financial year.

She had explained that the Finance Minister and the Governor knowingly breached the public financial management act by spending beyond legal limits and working to write off the debts of the Government without parliamentary approval.

However, the comments struck Mrs Esiam who could not hold back her furry over the claims.

This provoked a seething Essiam even further: “…What do you do for Ghana for you to open your mouth and spew garbage? What do you mean?… You come and sit here with your full checks, bright face and begin to insult people?

“She (Beatrice Annan) is a criminal…When you impugn a criminal to a whole political party?… It’s so offensive to call a group of people lawless. Are you their classmates?

“Are you their pedigree? To be calling Ken Ofori-Atta lawless? She’s spewing baseless propaganda. You don’t have even one basis point,” she interjected.

The interventions of the host, Annie Ampofo failed to restore order and while a shocked Beatrice Annan remained quiet, she continued:

“But for you a small girl to be sitting down and calling people lawless? As a lawyer what proof do you have? Strict proof?” She shouted.

In reaction, a rather well-composed Beatrice stated that she had taken note of her insults but had no reply except to say that she was not going to allow her to use her to revive her political career.

“She can’t use me to revive her dead political career. That I won’t allow,” Beatrice Annan stressed.

This reply angered Frances Essiam even further so retorted that she had no dead career and was not interested in any elective position in the NPP.

The show continued and Ms Essiam continued to heckle and invectives as and when she desired.

  • BoG’s GHS60 billion loss could fund NABCO for 60 years – Edudzi Tameklo

BoG’s GHS60 billion loss could fund NABCO for 60 years – Edudzi Tameklo

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Legal Team, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has stated that the GH¢60 billion loss reported by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) would have been sufficient to fund the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) for a span of six decades.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s 2022 report, the institution incurred a significant loss amounting to GH¢60 billion. The central bank attributed this substantial loss to the outcomes of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.

During an interview with the media, Edudzi Tamekloe, who also practices law privately, underscored the substantial impact of the lost GH¢60 billion on various governmental undertakings.

He criticized the government’s inability to sustain the NABCO program due to financial constraints, even in light of the reported GH¢60 billion allocation from the central bank.

“The Bank of Ghana is informing us that they have recorded a loss exceeding GH¢60 billion. This very loss would have sufficed to cover the NABCO beneficiaries’ expenses for a staggering 60 years. It means the annual payments could have been supported by this loss for six decades,” Edudzi Tamekloe explained.

He highlighted that the government’s challenges in upholding the NABCO initiative stem from financial limitations, despite the supposed GH¢60 billion inflow from the Bank of Ghana. This situation prompts inquiries into the utilization of such a significant sum of money and the government’s capability to allocate it appropriately.

Edudzi Tamekloe further voiced concerns about the transparency and accountability in managing such a substantial fund. He pointed out that the substantial amount could have been directed to fortify crucial government programs like NABCO.

“At this moment, the government of Ghana is indebted to NABCO trainees. Hence, the pressing question emerges: where has the GH¢60 billion disappeared to? Where is this substantial sum of money?” he posed.

  • GHc60bn BOG loss could fund NABCO beneficiaries for 60 years – Edudzi Tameklo

GHc60bn BOG loss could fund NABCO beneficiaries for 60 years – Edudzi Tameklo

Legal Team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has pointed out that the GHc60 billion loss incurred by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) could provide funding for participants of the National Builders Corp (NABCO) program for a span of sixty years.

As per the 2022 report released by the Bank of Ghana, the institution reported a significant loss of approximately GHc60 billion. The central bank attributed this substantial deficit to the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.

However, making an appearance on Accra-based TV3, Edudzi Tamekloe who is also a private legal practitioner, pointed out the significant impact the lost GH¢60 billion could have had on various government initiatives.

He criticised the government’s inability to sustain the NABCO program due to a lack of funds, despite the reported GH¢60 billion allocation from the central bank.

“Bank of Ghana is telling us that they have declared over GH¢60 billion. Now, that GH¢60 billion loss is enough to pay for NABCO beneficiaries for 60 years. You will be paying for them every year for 60 years.

“The reason the government of Ghana was not able to sustain the NABCO program is because of the lack of funds and we are being told the GH¢60 billion was given to the government of Ghana and more. And with all that amount of money, we are not able to sustain NABCO,” he said.

Edudzi Tamekloe further questioned the transparency and accountability in the management of such a substantial amount of money, particularly when it could have been channeled to support vital government programs like NABCO.

“As we speak, the government of Ghana is indebted to NABCO trainees. So where did the GH¢60 billion go, where is the money?” he questioned.

  • You can picket for 100 years it’ll amount to nothing – Okoe Boye to Minority

Former Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has declared the planned National Democratic Congress (NDC)  picket on the resignation of the Bank of Ghana Governor, Philip Addison, as a wild goose chase.

He holds the strong conviction that the exercise will yield no positive results.

In an interview on Peace FM’s Morning, Kokrokoo, he entreated the opposition to trigger the legitimate actions necessary for removing the Governor from office if he’s guilty of any offense and stop politicising matters.

Mr Okoe Boye’s comments follow recent revelations from the Bank of Ghana, with regards to losses recorded and other expenditure of the Apex Bank in 2022, and subsequent reactions to the report.

“The tools are available if the NDC thinks he [the governor] has broken the Act. Parliament should trigger the process,” he said.

He, however, mentioned that he is aware the BoG Governor is burdened with a liability that has been transferred. During the discourse, he said he had been in various meetings where the BoG had been called by the Finance Committee in Parliament to answer questions and during such meetings, he observed that a significant portion of the debts had been documented in the years preceding his assumption of office.

“I am convinced that Addison is carrying more or less a transferred liability and I’m more convinced that although there were issues that had to do with our own government, a lot of the liability we have to carry to a larger extent was also borne by the global crises we went through,” he noted.

He, thus, concluded that: “with the picketing they can be there for 100 years  it will amount to nothing. The reason is very simple. Trigger the process that can resolve this. If Ghana is what you’re thinking about, use the legitimate process to get Addison out of office,” he noted.

  • Mahama promises 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks in next govt

Mahama promises 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks in next govt

Former President John Mahama has provided an assurance to Ghanaians that the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will deliver quality governance.

The NDC’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections pledged that his administration will diligently work to alleviate the tax burden on Ghanaian businesses, which has been imposed by the current governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He emphasized that this tax burden has hindered the nation from maintaining its esteemed status as a prominent investment destination in Africa.

In his message commemorating International Youth Day on August 12, Mr. Mahama expressed his deep concern regarding the notably high level of youth unemployment in the country.

Mr Mahama underlined that the youth constitute the driving force behind positive transformations and serve as pivotal agents of development throughout Ghana’s history.

He elaborated that in order to secure a more promising future, it is imperative to equip the youth with relevant skills, generate employment opportunities, and provide the necessary support for them to play a transformative role in shaping both the nation and the entire African continent.

“Rising unemployment, increasing cost of living, and lack of opportunities have left many young people feeling hopeless and are testing their sense of patriotism to the limit.

“For me, John Dramani Mahama, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), we are committed to urgently turning this situation around by paving the way for nurturing a generation of skilled youth,” he said.

“A new NDC administration will work urgently to equip our youth with the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future. We will introduce a 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks for manufacturers who will run extra shifts to create more room for employment.”

Mr Mahama added that his administration will boost the potential of agriculture and agribusiness and provide critical social and IT infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.

“Our policy priorities will imbue our young people with the “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society” — the critical Green Skills our youth need to advance a sustainable world,” the NDC flagbearer stated.

Mr Mahama said that he has the interest of Ghanaians at heart, noting that by working together, “we will build the Ghana we want and put the smiles back on the faces of our young people.”

  • Martin Kpebu labels Ghanaian politicians as “Crooks” and “Bad boys and girls”

Prominent legal expert, Martin Kpebu, has pointed the blame at Ghanaian politicians for hindering the country’s advancement in its development journey.

He expressed that among Ghana’s politicians, the sole example of a “righteous” figure was the late ex-President, John Evans Atta Mills, who consistently prioritized the nation’s welfare over his own.

During an interview on Asempa FM, Kpebu conveyed these statements and characterized the other politicians in Ghana as individuals with criminal intentions, solely focused on personal financial gains.

“Politicians are usually crooks… bad boys and girls. NDC, NPP, all of them are crooks. Apart from Atta Mills who did not steal from us, the rest are crooks… Atta Mills was an honest man, the rest have been dribbled with corruption.

“We must have a special session on politicians and profile them, otherwise they would keep deceiving Ghanaians, these are crooks.

“… you would be there and your classmate who is not even doing well like you are, gets a position and all of a sudden, he builds a mansion. These guys are causing us headaches,” he said in Twi.

He added that politicians would lead Ghana to its end if Ghanaians remain silent on how they have been stealing from the country.

He said that the amounts of money reported to have been found at the home and in bank accounts of the former Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, show the kind of mayhem politicians are causing the country.

The lawyer added that if the homes and bank accounts of Ghanaian politicians are searched, the monies that would be recovered would be enough to transform the country.

  • Minority calls on Akufo-Addo to address nation on BoG’s challenges

Minority calls on Akufo-Addo to address nation on BoG’s challenges

Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has urged President Akufo-Addo to deliver a national address outlining the government’s strategies to revive the Bank of Ghana (BoG), which he characterized as facing an unprecedented collapse.

In a Facebook post, Forson emphasized the need for decisive actions to restore solvency to the central bank.

“Given the unprecedented collapse of our central bank, it is imperative for the President of Ghana to urgently address the nation. During this address, the President should outline the decisive actions that the government plans to implement in order to restore solvency to the Bank of Ghana,” Mr Forson said in a Facebook post on Monday.

Forson highlighted that when a regulated institution’s financials or liquidity position is compromised, the BoG typically enforces directives, including withholding dividend payments even in profitable situations.

“Granting of new loans will be put on hold; Appointment of new directors will be restricted; Capital expenditure will be temporarily suspended and staff recruitment will be paused, and other similar measures will be taken,” he added.

Other measures, such as suspending new loans, restricting director appointments, pausing capital expenditure, and halting staff recruitment, are also implemented.

Additionally, Forson dismissed claims by Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), that Forson was a member of the BoG Board during the initiation of processes for the bank’s new head office construction.

Forson refuted these assertions in a press release, characterizing them as a “desperate attempt” by the NPP to defend their actions.

Forson clarified that during the Mahama/NDC administration, the Bank of Ghana never entered into a contract for the new head office’s construction nor purchased land in Accra for the building.

He criticized the decision to construct the new head office given the bank’s substantial loss and negative equity, deeming it a reckless and misguided priority.

Forson concluded by asserting that no attempt at equalization can absolve the current government and Governor Addison’s management from the historical collapse and mismanagement of the Bank of Ghana.

He maintained that the countdown to the resignation of the Governor and his deputies is ongoing.

“For the record, I was not part of the processes for the construction of this new Head Office building, and the Bank of Ghana Board never began such processes for the construction of this new Head Office building at Ridge. We maintain that the decision by the current Bank of Ghana Management and Board to construct an ultra-modern Head Office building at a time when the Bank of Ghana has recorded a loss of GhS60.8 billion and a negative equity of GHS55.1 billion; at a time when the ordinary Ghanaian is struggling to make ends meet, is a reckless and misplaced priority.”

“No attempt at equalisation can redeem the historical collapse and mismanagement of the Bank of Ghana by this Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government, alongside Governor Addison and his management. The countdown to the resignation of the Governor and his deputies is still on,” Dr. Forson added.

  • NDC communicator blames Ghana’s economic woes on Bawumia, Ofori Atta and Akufo-Addo

NDC communicator blames Ghana’s economic woes on Bawumia, Ofori Atta and Akufo-Addo

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team,
Solomon Anane has pointed fingers at three influential figures, attributing Ghana’s ongoing economic hardships to their actions.

Anane asserted that these individuals, despite their perceived role in exacerbating the nation’s struggles, have remained untouchable due to their close ties to President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The individuals he identified were Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the head of the economic management team, Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister of Finance, and Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Speaking on a panel discussion on Hello FM’s Akoko Abon on August 13, 2023, he emphasised that these three figures were instrumental in causing the economic challenges currently faced by Ghanaians.

“I have written something here about three specific people who are behind our struggles as Ghanaians. The first is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the head of economic management, who is one of the reasons why we, as Ghanaians, are suffering.

“The second person is the finance minister, who is in control of our country’s finances, but do not touch him, my anointed; if you touch him, trouble will follow…If Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo sacks his finance minister or Ghana’s Bank governor, he will rather sack his beloved wife and force her to leave since such people are not touched.

“Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, is now also a member…and these three people are the source of our sorrows and struggles in our country as Ghanaians.”

Ghana is grappling with economic challenges as its national currency, the cedi, faces a tough battle against the US dollar.

To address the pressing issues at hand, the country has successfully secured a $3 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The funds are intended to provide a much-needed boost to the economy and steer it back on track.

Escalating unemployment and soaring living costs have left the youth in despair – Mahama

National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that if the NDC emerges victorious in the 2024 presidential election, his government will implement measures aimed at addressing youth unemployment.

In a statement to mark International Youth Day, the ex-president emphasized that the significant increase in unemployment statistics was a major cause for concern.

He also noted that the cost of living has left many young people feeling hopeless with no opportunities in sight.

“NDC administration will work urgently to equip our youth with the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future,” he said in a Facebook post.

According to him, a 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks for manufacturers will be introduced under a new NDC government.

The move he explained will increase recruitment numbers which will eventually financially empower young people.

“We will work to ease the burden of taxes imposed by this NPP administration on Ghanaian businesses and investors, which has robbed Ghana of its envious position as one of Africa’s leading destinations for investment.

We will maximise the potential of agriculture and agribusiness and provide critical social and IT infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.

Our policy priorities will imbue our young people with the “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society” — the critical Green Skills our youth need to advance a sustainable world.”

    Below is Mahama’s Facebook post.

On International Youth Day, I celebrate the creativity, enterprise, and passion of Ghana’s youth. I want to use this occasion to highlight the importance of our young people as the driving force of positive change and innovation.

Our youth have been key agents of change and development throughout our nation’s history. To ensure a brighter future, we must empower a generation of skilled youth, create decent jobs, and support the youth to transform our country, Africa, and the world.

Rising unemployment, increasing cost of living, and lack of opportunities have left many young people feeling hopeless and are testing their sense of patriotism to the limit.

For me, John Dramani Mahama, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), we are committed to urgently turning this situation around by paving the way for nurturing a generation of skilled youth.

A new NDC administration will work urgently to equip our youth with the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future. We will introduce a 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks for manufacturers who will run extra shifts to create more room for employment.

We will work to ease the burden of taxes imposed by this NPP administration on Ghanaian businesses and investors, which has robbed Ghana of its envious position as one of Africa’s leading destinations for investment.

We will maximise the potential of agriculture and agribusiness and provide critical social and IT infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.

Our policy priorities will imbue our young people with the “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society” — the critical Green Skills our youth need to advance a sustainable world.

People matter, and by working together, we will build the Ghana we want and put the smiles back on the faces of our young people.

    Happy International Youth Day.

Calls for resignation of BoG governor, deputies heighten as Kofi Adams joins chorus

Former National Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and current Buem Member of Parliament, Kofi Adams, has joined the growing demand for the Bank of Ghana’s governor and deputy governors to step down. This appeal comes in response to allegations of extravagant expenditures that resulted in a staggering GHC60 billion deficit in 2022.

Mr Adams suggested that the central bank’s irresponsibility has now reached its zenith, leaving no alternative but for those accountable for the chaos to depart, allowing capable individuals to take over and restore financial stability to the institution.

In a conversation with Selorm Adonoo on The Big Issue program aired on Citi TV and Citi FM, Kofi Adams, the former NDC organizer, expressed that the governor and deputy governors have consistently ignored alerts from the Minority group. He asserted that their ongoing mishandling of the economy has led to the present turmoil, and therefore, they should step down due to their lack of competence.

“We have reached a point where we cannot let the one that created the mess to continue to be there, and like many economists have said, the economy is not yet recovering and so if the person that caused this mess continues to superintend over the economy, the entire economy will collapse.”

“It is very clear that many of the things that are being reported today as a result of the economy being in the intensive care unit were known long ago. The Minority raised issues right from the word go and the Bank of Ghana ignored them. We raised issues with the printing of banknotes to support the reckless expenditure of the government.”

“They have violated the very Act that governs them so what more can we do as a Minority than to ask the governors to leave for a more competent person to come take over and work things around for us,” Mr. Adams further charged.

Chiefs should be allowed to engage in partisan politics –NDC’s Fred Agbenyo

Member of the communication team of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo, has put forth the idea that traditional rulers should take on an active role in partisan politics.

He has raised the question of why these influential traditional leaders, who contribute significantly to the development of their communities, shouldn’t be allowed to actively participate in the political arena.

According to Article 276 Clause One of the 1992 Constitution, chiefs are currently prohibited from engaging in active party politics, and any chief aspiring to hold political office is required to relinquish their position as a chief.

Agbenyo emphasised that chiefs often serve as mediators when politicians clash or deviate from their intended course.

“We also removed the clauses that allow chiefs to participate in our type of politics, partisan politics. It is through partisan politics that government leaders are elected. So, if we allow the chiefs to participate, some of the chiefs may find themselves on the right side of the government in power, while others may find themselves on the wrong side of the government in power, Fred Agbenyo told Kwaku Owusu Adjei (Patoo) on Adwenekasa on Accra-based Original FM 91.9.

Fred Agbenyo has emphasised that the nation should now contemplate amending the law that prohibits chiefs and traditional leaders from actively participating in partisan politics.

He pointed out that the current circumstances have evolved, and similar to other citizens of Ghana, traditional rulers also hold the right to be involved in political activities.

  • Supporter of Alan Kyerematen not a member of us – NDC

Supporter of Alan Kyerematen not a member of us – NDC

The Ashanti Regional leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has refuted allegations suggesting the suspension of their Women’s Organiser within the region.

These claims arose due to her public endorsement of a candidate from an opposing party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the flagbearership race.

Earlier reports had indicated that the NDC’s Kumawu office had taken the decision to remove Akua Afriyie, the Women’s Organiser, from her role for openly expressing her support for Alan Kyerematen, a contestant in the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer competition.

This decision to remove her allegedly stemmed from a video in which she vocally expressed her admiration for the opposing party’s candidate.

However, in an official statement dated August 9, 2023, the leadership of the NDC in the Ashanti Region categorically denied any knowledge of an individual fitting the description of a women’s organiser or party executive at any tier of the organization.

They characterized these reports as baseless and intended to cause harm, emphasizing that no women’s organiser affiliated with their party had made any such declaration.

Furthermore, they asserted that no suspension of this nature had been implemented by any branch of the party.

The name mentioned in the reports, Akua Afriyie, was clarified to hold no presence within their party records as a women’s organiser or party executive, whether at the branch, constituency, or regional level, as detailed in their statement.

“The said name (Akua Afriyie) which is linked to the story does not exist in any of our records as a party women’s organizer or party executive either at the branch constituency or regional level,” it continued.

    Below is the statement:

According to news reports, the Ashanti Regional leadership has dismissed Akua Afriyie from her role as the Women’s Organiser.

This action was taken due to her public endorsement of Alan Kyerematen, a contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race.

The decision to remove her from her position was apparently influenced by a video in which she vocally expressed her admiration for Alan Kyerematen, the opposition candidate.

In the video, Akua Afriyie can be heard stating that although she is a member of the NDC, she would cast her vote for Alan Kyerematen if he is presented as the NPP’s candidate in the 2024 general elections. She further commented that Alan, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, possesses the vision necessary to alleviate Ghana’s existing challenges and to inspire the nation’s youth towards greatness.

Reportedly, she remarked, “I am currently not a member of the NDC or a member of the NPP, but I am a strong supporter of Mr. Kyerematen.”

  • NDC’s press conference on BoG’s GHC60bn loss was completely needless – NPP

NDC’s press conference on BoG’s GHC60bn loss was completely needless – NPP

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has described the press conference held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to demand the resignation of Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, was entirely unnecessary.

Richard Ahiagba conveyed that the administration has recognized Ghana’s economic challenges and is implementing strategies to navigate and emerge from the crisis.

He holds the opinion that rather than issuing a 21-day ultimatum for the Bank of Ghana governor’s resignation, the NDC should have proposed solutions to address the issues at hand.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on August 10, 2023, Richard Ahiagba described NDC’s press conference as a waste of time and urged them to stop bastardizing the government for everything it does.

“To call a press conference only to say that he [Dr. Addison] should resign 21 days or occupy, I don’t see the value of that. And I think that they wasted everybody’s time.

“So to call a press conference when there are essential matters to be debated, I am interested in hearing what their position is on how we dig ourselves out of the economy.

“Because really, the media reports that came, they were happy. Now we are not moving forward. This whole enterprise, they start up at their headquarters or wherever they are grouping, to just say that they are going to obstruct everything and bastardize everything government does is not the way to behave as a political party, a responsible opposition party,” he said.

The communications director of the NPP also stated that the government has conceded the challenges of the economy and is working assiduously to recover.

“So this [NDC’s] press conference was completely needless. The subject of this discussion is known to Ghanaians that we are in a difficult place. The government has acknowledged the difficulties we’re going through and is working spirally to try and bring us out of it,” Richard Ahiagba added.

    Background

The Minority in Parliament gave the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, a 21-day ultimatum to resign.

According to them, the governor and his deputies must resign.

During a press briefing on August 8, 2022, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, said the governor had been found culpable of various breaches in the Bank of Ghana Act.

“In this regard, we call for the resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank and his deputies within 21 days from today. We are resolved to embark on popular action to occupy the Central Bank and drive out the team of inept, callous, and criminal mis-managers of the finances of this country and Save the Bank of Ghana,” he said.

Dr Ato Forson noted however that, “the March to Ensure Accountability will begin in 21 days if the Governor of the Bank of Ghana does not do the needful and pack bag and baggage out of that sacred institution that he has so desecrated.”

  • Mahama is a spent force – Mustapha Salam

Mahama is a spent force – Mustapha Salam

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has justified his call on Ghanaians to refrain from voting in favor of Former President John Dramani Mahama

He asserts that Mr Mahama is now “a spent force” in the political landscape, and lacks the capability to fulfill the responsibilities of a president.

Speaking on the track record of he New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), during the Kokrokoo Morning show, he noted that despite a few hitches, the NPP government led by President Akufo-Addo has performed way better than the Mahama administration.

“I have trust and believe that the NPP represents a better alternative any day though we are humans and we may have faulted in one way or the other. We have made errors but on the balance of any scale, our performance outweighs that of the NDC,” he noted.

He further noted that Mr Mahama has declined in significance and no longer holds the same level of influence or capability as it did in the past.

“We have experienced governance under NDC and I’ve said time without number that John Mahama is a spent force in this country. We have seen the best he can give and he has nothing more to offer,” he added.

  • New BoG office 6x pricier than Kempinski – NDC

New BoG office 6x pricier than Kempinski – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) rationale for constructing a new headquarters, especially in the wake of a substantial loss in 2022.

The opposition party views the Central Bank’s explanation for this decision as “absurd, to say the least.” The Bank of Ghana defended its choice, stating that its existing headquarters lacked structural integrity following a thorough assessment.

According to the Central Bank, “The structural integrity assessment revealed that the main building does not meet the required level of strength necessary for safe usage. This deficiency means that the building may suffer significant damage in an extreme scenario such as unusually strong winds or a major earthquake, which is expected in the Accra region. Considering our strategic goal of positioning Ghana as the financial hub of the sub-region, with the potential of hosting a future regional Central Bank.”

Nonetheless, the NDC’s Members of Parliament, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, have expressed skepticism. They noted that previous governors, even during periods of consistent profits, did not deem a new headquarters necessary. Instead, they opted to relocate certain bank operations to the Cedi House and Spintex Road facilities.

The NDC MPs posed a fundamental question: “If, during the NDC/Mahama government’s successive years of profit (2012-2016), the Bank of Ghana did not find it urgent to construct a new office complex but rather invested in building a hospital to support the nation’s healthcare needs, how can the Bank of Ghana justify prioritizing a new $250 million office complex when it has incurred an unprecedented loss of GHS 60.8 billion and a negative equity of GHS 55.1 billion?”

The NDC’s statement compared the cost of the new headquarters unfavorably to other prominent structures, such as the ultramodern Ecobank Head Office building and the Kempinski hotel in Accra.

They pointed out that the cost of the new Bank of Ghana headquarters could instead be used to build thousands of new classrooms and healthcare facilities.

The NDC described the Central Bank’s decision as extravagant, highlighting that the substantial cost could have been directed towards more pressing matters, especially when considering the need for immediate recapitalization.

In essence, the NDC is raising concerns about the Bank of Ghana’s decision to prioritize a new headquarters amidst financial challenges and a significant loss, questioning the justification for such an expenditure.

  • Are you building heaven? – Sammy Gyamfi on $250m BoG building

The revelation of a $250 million building project by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has ignited a fiery response from the general public.

Citizens are expressing a mix of astonishment, concern, and demands for transparency regarding the significant financial commitment.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has also added his voice to the discourse, questioning the rationale behind the colossal expenditure of the project.

“US$250 million for one building, in a country like Ghana, in this critical time? Why, are you building a new Heaven?” he asked on UTV’s Mpu ne Mpu show.

The staggering cost associated with the Bank of Ghana’s new building venture has raised eyebrows and sparked a nationwide debate over fiscal prudence and resource allocation. Sammy Gyamfi, known for his vocal stance on political and economic matters, seized the opportunity to express his incredulity over the project’s price tag.

“In these difficult times, when we are supposed to take measures to mitigate the impact of the harsh economic conditions, they are making the construction of a building their priority. Even after recording huge losses the previous year?” a baffled Sammy Gyamfi contended.

“This is the same building the governor under previous administrations since 1957, including Mahama’s administration have,” he added.
