  • Peace Council expresses concern over NDC/NPP declaration of results

The National Peace Council (NPC) on Tuesday expressed concern over the declaration of the results of the December 7 polls by both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The Reverend Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, NPC Chairman, said the Council had noted with grave concern the press conferences organized by the two main political parties to declare their results of the just-ended elections.

“We would like to reiterate that the Electoral Commission (EC) is the only constitutionally mandated institution to declare the results of the presidential elections,” Rev Dr Adu-Gyamfi stated at a press conference organized by the NPC and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) in Accra.

“We, therefore, call on all actors involved to respect and adhere to the laws of the country and exercise patience as the EC undertake its mandate,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their patriotism on Election Day and their patience in the post-voting activities.

He called on the National Election Security Taskforce to take control of the situation and respond appropriately.

“We continue to encourage all media houses to be circumspect in their reportage of the ongoing counting and coalition processes and appeal to Ghanaians and as we wait for the EC’s declaration of the official results,” Rev Dr Adu-Gyamfi said.

“We entreat the international observer missions in the country to continue their preventive diplomatic engagement with the stakeholders to neutralize the tension.”

The press conference was to formally bring to a closure the WANEP/NPC’s Electoral violence Monitoring, Analysis and Mitigation (EMAM) Election Situation Room (ESR).

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) retained the New Edubiase and Ejura-Sekyedumase parliamentary seats to further consolidate its stronghold in these constituencies.

This is in addition to the Asawase constituency, which is also the strongest and formidable seat of the party in the Ashanti Region.

Mr Abdul Salam Adams recaptured the New Edubiase seat which was taken away by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 elections, with 19,693 votes as against that of Mr George Oduro, the incumbent Member of Parliament, who had 17,592 votes.

  • NDC seems to be only interested in the parliamentary elections – John Boadu

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. John Boadu, has said that he is struggling to understand why the opposition National Democratic Congress will jubilate after claiming the minority seats in Parliament.

According to John Boadu, the New Patriotic Party are confident of victory in both the parliamentary and the presidential elections so they see no reason why the NDC will think otherwise.

He wondered why their main contender, the National Democratic Congress, will celebrate after claiming the minority seats in Parliament once again.

“For us in the New Patriotic Party, we know we have won the Presidential seat and you can see that our opponents are congratulating us in disguise. They seemed to be interested only in Parliament and even with that, they are in the minority.”

He also credits the NDC for the improvement they’ve had in the Parliamentary elections.

“I don’t know why they are so happy with being in the minority, they have improved and you can give it to them but my view is that Nana Addo has proven once again that his policies and visions have been endorsed by the people of this country,” John Boadu told the press at the Accra International Conference Centre.

  • NDC claims to have won 20 seats in the Greater Accra Region

The opposition National Democratic Congress is claiming to have won the majority of parliamentary seats in the Greater Accra Region, stating that they have won 20 seats in total.

Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Peter Boamah Otukonor made this claim at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, December 8.

The presser came barely an hour after John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the party, spoke to the media, voicing out his concerns over the electoral process.

“So, in all, we have won 20 seats in Greater Accra and this is a major victory because as you may be aware, Greater Accra is a swing region any hardly can any political party would be able to win 20 seats out of the 34 seats available.”

“Below are the constituencies we have won in Greater Accra, La Dade Kotopon, Ada, Sege, Ningo Pampram, Kpone- Katamanso, Shai-Osudoku, Tema East, Ashaiman, Krowor, Korle Klottey, Ayawaso East, Ayawaso North, Okaikwei North, Madina, Adenta, Domeabra-Obom, Ablekuma Central, Ablekuma South, Ledzokuku and almighty Odododiodoo,” Peter Boamah Otukonor concluded.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has announced that they will declare the Presidential results today, December 9, 2020.

  • Weve captured Parliament; ready to select Speaker and other leaders NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says its independent collated results show it has grabbed majority of seats in the next Parliament of Ghana.

It says the conviction has propelled its readiness to choose the next Speaker of Parliament and the First Deputy Speaker as well as the leadership of the various select and standing committees of the House.

General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia at a press conference on Tuesday disclosed that “NDC has captured Parliament as we speak now and because of that, NDC will select the next Speaker of Parliament and the next First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and all the chairmen of Parliament select and standing committees”.

Mr. Nketia also accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of conniving with the Electoral Commission to turn the tables round in its favour to take over Parliament.

He has therefore urged persons who have voted for NDC parliamentary candidates to ensure that ballots are protected to safeguard the seats they have already acquired in Parliament.

“I believe that the NPP is in a very uncomfortable situation because whatever they do, it is clear that NDC controls Parliament now so that is why they want the Electoral Commission to try and find ways to try to collate results that have been declared for our parliamentary candidate. That is why I am calling on the electorate to rise and protect their votes.”

“I wish also to emphasize that there is pressure from the headquarters of the Commission and the government on the various returning officers who have declared certified results of the parliamentary election according to the power vested in them by law to revise and do recounting and re-collation which are all illegal and want the various citizens who cast their votes to protect that vote and ensure that nobody steals that verdict”, he added.

  • Thank you for giving NDC a working majority in the next Parliament Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the NDC Presidential Candidate, claims Ghanaians have given the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) “a working majority” in parliament.

According to him, Ghanaians have voted for change.

In a post on his Facebook timeline, the former President wrote, “Thank you for voting for change and giving the NDC a working majority in the next Parliament. Thank you, Ghana.”

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are both claiming victory in the general elections.

Both parties claimed that they have secured the most seats in parliament and are leading the presidential race as well.

John Boadu, General Secretary of the NPP told the media that, they have taken over regions that were formally controlled by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He indicated the NPP now controls three out of the five regions of the north, including the Savannah region where the NDC Presidential Candidate, John Mahama hails.

“The NPP won 63 seats above what the NDC had in 2016 as such, surprisingly, the NDC is insisting on flipped seats. But they do not mention the many seats they have flopped,” John Boadu said.

The NDC, on the other hand, at a press briefing, accused the NPP of deceiving Ghanaians.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the NDC Director of Elections insisted that the NDC has won a majority of Parliamentary seats in the presidential and parliamentary elections adding that the NPP has not dominated any of the northern regions.

“We won 14 out of 15 in the Upper East Region, we won 8 out of 11 Constituencies in the Upper West region, we won 9 out of 18 seats in the Northern region,” Afriyie Ankrah said.

  • Jubilant NDC supporters mass up at party headquarters as leaders declare victory

The headquarters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is teeming with jubilant party supporters following assurances by the party leaders that victory has been secured in the just ended December 7 polls.

At a press conference held at the headquarters, General Secretary, Johnson Aseidu Nketia, declared that the results trickling in from all 275 constituencies across the country to the party data centre show the NDC has secured 141 seats in the legislature.

A party needs 138 seats to form a Majority in Ghana’s Parliament.

Mr Aseidu Nketia also said while the party cannot declare the election results that its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has garnered majority of the votes, there is strong evidence that he [Mahama] will be the next occupant of the Flagstaff House.

These assurances prompted a huge crowd that had massed up at the venue of the press conference to begin jubilation.

Some danced, others sped to and fro on their motorbikes, while others sprayed white powder on themselves to signify victory.

Former President John Dramani Mahama is attempting to win back the Presidency from Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Mahama lost to Akufo-Addo in the 2016 election by a huge margin.

  • NDC rejects NPP’s parliamentary majority claim

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday rejected claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that it is currently holding majority parliamentary seats in the ongoing Presidential and Parliamentary elections counts.

It also debunked the assertion by the NPP that it was leading in the five regions of the North.

Reacting to the press conference organized by the New Patriotic Party, asserting that it was leading in the parliamentary seats; Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Director of Elections of the NDC said such claims were false and called on Ghanaians not to countenance it.

He claimed that the NDC rather had the advantage in the parliamentary polls because it had secured 140 seats out of the available 275.

He explained that the party had also won major swing constituencies and regions putting it in a better position to secure the majority at the end of the collation.

The NDC’s Director of Elections said: “our opponents have made some desperate attempts to throw the dust into the eyes of Ghanaians but we want to state clearly, emphatically and unambiguously that it is not true the NPP has the majority in parliament.”

He also expressed displeasure over delays concerning the arrival of collated numbers to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) regional offices for onward dissemination to the headquarters and called for immediate ratification to ensure results were delivered on time to mute unforeseen tensions.

Mr Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, Member of Parliament for Ketu South cautioned the NPP to desist from acts that would undermine the success chalked so far.

“We are going to ensure that the right numbers are declared and no matter of intimidation would change that,” he added.

  • NDC calls for recount of votes of polling station in Dome-Kwabenya

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for a recount of votes at Dome-Kwabenya Constituency collation centre in the Greater Accra Region on suspicions of over voting

The alleged over voting is believed to have taken place at the polling station 2 in Shepherd Scholars Preparatory School.

The NDC polling agents called for a recount after all was set for the declaration of the results at the collation centre.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party(NPP) has described those allegations as false, adding that calls for a recount needless.

The Dome-Kwabenya constituency is keenly contested by the Deputy Majority leader Sarah Adwoa Sarfo and the National Democratic Congress candidate Elikplim Akurugu.

The Dome-Kwabenya constituency is keenly contested by the Deputy Majority leader Sarah Adwoa Sarfo and the National Democratic Congress candidate Elikplim Akurugu.

Ghana’s voting ended on Monday in 38,622 polling stations within the 16 regions across Ghana.

They cast their ballots in the general election to elect a president and 275 members of the parliament.

The voting process was generally peacefully except for two persons sustaining gunshot wounds after a shooting incident in one of the polling stations in Kasoa.

The tampering of presidential ballot papers in some polling stations in two constituencies was also witnessed, but the EC reacted swiftly.

The EC has assured the public it will declare the results within 24 hours after the end of voting.

  • Election 2020: NDC boycotts collation in Eastern Region

The NDC have boycotted the collation of results exercise currently ongoing at the premises of the Electoral Commission in Eastern Region.

The NDC executives in Eastern Region expressed strong unhappiness with the Eastern Regional EC for delaying with results.

As at 2pm on December 8, Baba Jamal who is a member of the NDC National Election Committee, led the Regional executives to run down the EC who had declared results of only 13 constituencies out of the 33 in the region.

The EC in the morning declared results of five constituencies and took more than four hours to come and declare seven more results which didn’t sit well with the NDC.

The NDC’s argument was that the Regional EC did not give them the opportunity to see the results to compare with their own collation and therefore declared their own results to the EC.

Baba Jamal announced that no matter what figure the EC brings out, the NDC had polled 38.53% in the Presidential results.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah asked the general public to refute claims that the NPP has won majority parliamentary seats.

  • Hajia Alima Mahama crushed out of Parliament

Provisional results received from the Nalerigu-Gambaga Constituency, Hajia Alima Mahama has been crushed out of parliament.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nalerigu-Gambaga Constituency in the North East Region is trailing behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the area, Alhaji Baba Issifu Seidu, with 5,000 votes.

According to sources within the New Patriotic Party, it is unlikely she will be able to overturn the margin with the few polling stations left to be collated even if all persons in those areas vote in her favour.

This is the second time she has lost the seat to the NDC after a similar one in 2008.

Meanwhile, the NPP has won the Chereponi, Yagaba-Kubore and Yunyoo seats all in the North East Region.

Announcing this at a press conference today, Mr John Boadu who is the General Secretary of the NPP said: “In the North East Region, the NDC has also flopped, losing Yagaba Kubori to Mustapha Ussif, the NDC has flopped in Yunyoo, losing the seat to Oscar Lawal of the NPP, and the NDC has also flopped in Chereponi, losing the seat to Abdul Razak of the NPP.”

  • ‘I knew that Yilo would choose quality over mediocrity’ – Albert Nyakotey

NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Yilo Krobo in the Eastern Region, Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey is the Member of Parliament elect for the area, Electoral Commission officials have declared.

EC Returning officer, Mr Kwao Andrews Tetteh announced Mr Nyakotey’s victory at 3am on Tuesday at Somanya after collating results from all 157 polling stations in the municipality.

A first-time contender, the NDC Candidate who’ll succeed outgoing MP for the area, Lawyer Magnus Kofi Amoatey polled 26,165 votes out of the 46,933 valid votes cast against Mr Djetsey Apertey’s 20,828.

    597 votes were rejected.

Djetsey Apertey was seeking to be second time lucky after losing out to the current MP, Lawyer Amoatey in the 2016 parliamentary elections.

Lawyer Amoatey beat the NPP candidate with 23,507 votes with Mr Apertey poling 15,978 votes.

Albert Nyakotey in his victory speech said the poor quality of the NPP PC guaranteed his victory.

“I don’t want to say but look at the quality of the Candidate the NPP was presenting. I knew that Yilo would choose quality over mediocrity,” he told reporters shortly after being declared the winner today.

He also went on to attribute his victory to the unity of his campaign team.

“I worked with all the people who were ready to work with me to achieve the results. I don’t want to say that I’m the only one who did it, this is a teamwork and a team result,” said the PC elect.

“I had a good team, I had a good strategy right from the word go, I scanned the environment and I had a good message.”

Albert Tetteh Nyakotey expressed his profound gratitude to all who contributed in diverse ways to ensure that his victory became a reality.

The incoming parliamentarian who interpreted his victory as a reflection of the bad policies of the NPP government maintained that he’ll, during his tenure as MP prioritise education, job creation and sports.

“My focus will be on education, my focus will be on jobs, my focus will also be on sports,” he averred.

  • Akufo-Addo in clear lead; NPP replies NDC’s flip constituencies

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is obvious that it will continue to maintain the majority in the next Parliament from results it claims to have collated as of 2:15am on Tuesday [December 8, 2020].

“We now control three of the five regions in northern Ghana”, the NPP’s General Secretary, John Boadu announced at a press conference organised by the party at 3am on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.

The press conference was in reaction to an earlier one organised by the NDC at 2:40am.

The NPP General Secretary said for the first time, the NPP has been able to win a seat in the Volta Region, and referred to Hohoe, which he said had been won by the Minister of Energy, John Peter Amewu.

He said from results the party has collated as of 2:15am [ from pink sheets, scanned and sent to its national headquarters in Accra, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was in a clear lead.”

“We will refrain from declaring results, we will leave that to the EC,” Mr Boadu said.

“However, from the results publicly declared, collated and announced at the constituency level, and also from our own internal collation system, the efficacy of which is not in doubt, we are happy to announce that we have so far collated and vetted, as at 2:15am, we have received in our situation room here in Accra, the scanned pink sheet results from 34,040 polling stations nationwide out of the total of 38,933 including special voting ones.”

“This represents 87.43 percent of all polling stations with 4,893 outstanding.” Mr Boadu said.

He insisted that puts the NPP’s candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the lead with 6,085,708 representing 52.72 percent.

He said this was the highest number of votes to be secured by any presidential candidate in the fourth Republic.

John Mahama is second with total votes of 5,308,033 representing 45.93 percent.

He said each one of the pink sheets used for the collation at the NPP’s collation centre has been scanned and are available for inspection as was done in the 2016 elections.

“We will take some of the media people to our collation centre and situation room for you to have a look at each and every pink sheet that has been scanned and received,” Mr Boadu added.

He said with just 4,893 polling station results still left to go with Akufo-Addo leading John Mahama by 777, 675 votes, “it will take much more than the usual propaganda to flick this.”

“Whereas we do not wish to declare that we have won the presidential race, we can confidently say that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has secured a clear incontestable margin ahead of John Mahama. We will however, as responsible citizens wait for the EC to declare the final results,” Mr Boadu added.

“As we come to the end of this election period, we call on all well meaning Ghanaians to exercise patience as we wait for the declaration of the final results from the Electoral Commission. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from our projections, collations, we are on course for a second term in office and a majority in Parliament. We are confident of this and awaits declaration from the EC as constitutionally mandated,” he added

    Seats won

Mr Boadu debunked the claim by the NDC that it had won the Abura Asebu Kwamankese (AAK) constituency in the Central Region and insisted the NPP candidate Elvis Donkor had retained his seat.

He said the NDC from the 2:40am press conference it organised and claimed to have won some seats from the NPP and consequently called on party supporters to mass up at collation centres, “was obvious that they have not learned from the 2016 mistakes and incompetence. It is obvious that they have no proper system of collation and rely on fake results and hearsay.”

“The NDC was so unprepared that in the middle of the press conference, the speaker, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah had to rely on Sammy Gyamfi’s whispers, his usual misinformation into Mr Afriyie’s ear, the NDC needs to take Ghanaians serious and check their facts before addressing the nation. This is a serious matter about election results, creating insinuations which create a lack of credibility on our whole election process.”

He said the NPP’s 2016 win of majority of 169 seats was historic and the first of its kind since the 4th Republic dispensation and “we are happy to announce that for the next Parliament, it is obvious from the results declared across the constituencies, the NPP will still maintain a majority in Parliament.”

He said the NPP won 63 seats above what the NDC had in 2016 and as such, “it is surprising that the NDC is insisting of a flip of seats. They do not mention the many seats they have flopped.”

“In the Savannah Region where the NDC presidential candidate John Mahama hails from, they flopped and we flipped four seats – Damango, Daboya and Salaga North in the Savannah Region.

He said the NPP is now the majority party in John Mahama’s own region, controlling four seats out of seven seats.

The NDC also flopped in Lambussie, a seat he said the NPP has won in the Upper West Region.

He added that in the North East Region, the NDC has also flopped, losing Yagba Kobore to Mustapha Ussif [Executive Secretary of National Service Scheme].

In Yonyoo, he added the NDC also lost the seat to Oscar Lawal of the NPP as well as in Chereponi where the NDC lost to Abdul Razak of the NPP.

“In the Northern Region, the NDC has flopped  to the extent that the NPP now has majority in the Northern Region by winning Karaga, Tatale, Zabzugu and Mion.

He said the NPP now controls three regions out of the five northern regions in Ghana.

He added the NPP has won the Upper West Akim in the Eastern Region for the first time and said the “icing of the cake is the historic NDC flop in the Volta Region” as John Peter Amewu won the first seat in the region for the NPP in Hohoe.

He also said though he is an NPP member, he sees NDC members as brothers and sisters. He appealed Ghanaians to think about the country first.

The two demonstrated in a video interview with Ghanaweb TV that they are one people despite their political differences.

Nsuaem Electoral Area has 12 polling stations and Ghanaweb TV has visited three polling stations so far.

At Nsuaem Methodist Primary School Polling Station A, 385 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots and as at 10:30 am, 130 voters have cast their ballots.

Ghanaweb TV also spotted armed military men in their recognized vehicle at Nsuaem Methodist Junior High School but their presence didn’t scare the voters in the queue.

  • Election 2020: NDC to address the media over Hawa Koomson ‘thuggery’

The National Democratic Congress in Awutu Senya East has hinted of addressing the media over the shooting incident on its Parliamentary candidate on Election Day.

The convoy Naa Koryoo on Monday suffered gunshots alleged to have been masterminded by hoodlums of incumbent NPP MP Hawa Koomson, where three people are reported to have suffered some degrees of injuries.

The NDC, in order to give their side of the story, says it is going to address the media.

    Below is the statement

Some thugs in a Rambo style shot into this car which had just moved from Naa Koryoo, the NDC Parliamentary candidate’s House in Kasoa. Three NDC Branch executives were shot in the car and one is in critical condition. There are some police personnel at the scene taking fingerprints on the car.

We just left the crime scene to the polling station where Naa Koryoo is supposed to vote and there is still a long queue and people are determined to cast their ballot. Apparently, Naa Koryoo was the target but she was not in the car when the shooting happened. We have been informed by one of the constituency executives that there will be a press conference shortly.

No amount of thuggery, violence or intimidation shall stop the people’s resolve to kick out Akuffo-Addo and his violent party out of power.

  • NDC should consider amending their candidate, not manifesto Otchere Darko

Ranking Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has asked the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to amend their candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, December 1 announced an amendment to their manifesto and has since promised to absorb the fees of students who will be admitted to the various tertiary institutions across the country in the next academic year.

This is an upgrade on its earlier promise of halving fees for continuing students of the various University students.

But reacting to the swift change, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko in a post on social media said that the NDC should rather consider amending their candidate for the impending election.

He said, “I hear the NDC have amended their manifesto with a few days to go. Perhaps, they should consider amending their candidate instead!”

According to information picked up by Citi News, the parliamentary candidate is being held by the police for failing to meet a bail condition he was given by an Accra court on counts of alleged embezzlement while he was Mayor of Tema.

“We are here because our incoming MP has been arrested. The work he has done within 3 years is unprecedented. The sitting NPP MP has not been able to do anything close to what Ashai Odampten has done. They cannot just arrest him like that. You have to send him a letter and if he refuses to come, then you arrest him. It is unlawful to just arrest him. We love the man.”

  • NDC supporters mass up at Police Headquarters to protect election materials

Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Friday massed up at the Upper East Regional Police Headquarters in Bolgatanga to demand a padlock.

The padlock they explained was to secure the room where election materials are being stored ahead of the elections.

The election materials are said to have arrived earlier Friday morning and were eventually stored in a room at the police headquarters.

The NDC supporters said a standard procedure where each political party provided a padlock for the security of the election materials was being ignored though it had been allowed during the previous elections.

The Upper East Regional police argued that if the political parties were allowed to provide a padlock for the security of the room, then it would not be easily accessible in case there was an emergency situation like a fire outbreak.

But that did not go down well with the NDC youth who threatened to spend the night at the premises of the police headquarters if their demand was not met.

Regional Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Donatus Akamugri managed to calm the youths by setting up a meet with the Regional Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service in the Upper East region to see how best the situation will be resolved.

The Regional Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service in the Upper East, Gyan Kofi assured the group he was going to take full responsibility for the election material until the said padlocks arrived.

“Gyan Kofi has assured us that he will sleep at the place with his men and watch over the place. So tomorrow morning we will be back, He will then lead us to the Regional Police Command to make sure the right thing is done

“We do not have any problem with the police, our problem is to ensure that the ballot papers are not tempered with,” he said.

Mr. Akamugri however cautioned the Police not to fail in coming through with their promise of doing what is expected or face a crowd of dissatisfied NDC youth supporters.

  • Ill warn my appointees against messing with Amidu – Mahama

NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, says he will warn his appointees not to take the office of the Special Prosecutor for granted if he wins the December polls.

Mr Mahama also says he will give the Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu the space to do his work to the best of his abilities.

Speaking to Accra-based Adom FM, the former President said the current NPP administration is making it difficult for the Special prosecutor to function effectively.

“If we come, we leave the office of the Special Prosecutor to work freely, we will maintain it because it was established by Parliament. And the point is I will warn my appointees against messing with him (Amidu) because, if he gets hold of any of them for corruption, I cannot intervene. And that should be the attitude of a President towards corruption”.

    OSP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor of Ghana was established after an act of the Parliament passed the Office of Special Prosecutor Bill in 2017.

The office serves as an independent investigating and prosecution body to make inquiries into corruption, bribery, or other criminal cases at the national level whether they be in public or private sector

The Government intended to lessen the burden on existing anti-corruption agencies and remove the institutional roadblocks that exist as hindrances to the fight against corruption. With the end result being to make anti-corruption agencies in the country more effective at discharging their duties.

In addition, government experts have expressed the ineffectiveness of the Attorney-General as an effective prosecution and law enforcement tool in the fight against corruption because the appointment and dismissal of the Attorney-General is determined by the president.

Therefore, the Office of the special prosecutor serves as the autonomous body to handle sensitive cases which the Attorney General will otherwise be ineffective at handling.

Martin Amidu is the first to hold the position of Special Prosecutor.

Pollster Ben Epshon has revealed that the Oti region will be a stronghold of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in spite of the split from the Volta region.

Mr Ephson said on the Elections 360 programme with co-host Stephen Anti on TV3 that the split of the region by the Akufo-Addo administration will have no effect on the voting pattern in that part of the country.

“Oti region will still be an NDC stronghold,” he said on the programme on Monday, October 12.

Mr Epshon further explained that anytime any of the two leading parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC lost less than 70 per cent of votes in their strongholds they go ahead to lose the elections.

“You will have to win a certain percentage. For example, any time the NPP has won less than 70 percent in Ashanti and less than 60 percent in Eastern region, they lose the elections because that is your stronghold.

“In Volta region, a new book I am working on shows that the NDC lost over a hundred thousand votes in Volta region alone compared to 2012.

“So if you strong hold you are losing votes and you are losing votes in the other places. And that is the cause of apathy.”

  • Twifo-Hemang dressmakers clamour for NDC’s return

Dozens of dressmakers and their trainees in Twifo-Hemang in the Central Region have held a massive street procession as they declared their support for former President John Dramani Mahama, Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The dressmakers, who were drenched by a downpour they defied, held various placards and chanted slogans in the ecstatic procession on Tuesday to welcome Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice Presidential Candidate of the NDC, who is touring the area.

Some of the placards held by the dressmakers, who are members of the Ghana National Dressmakers and Tailors Association read “JM we need you,” “JM we need your sewing machines,” “Seamstresses and Tailors are suffering,” “John & Jane Dressmakers need you now,” and “We need jobs,” among others.

According to the leaders of the group, the withdrawal of support facilities such as soft loans and sewing machines that were provided during the tenure of the NDC, has adversely affected the dressmaking industry in the region.

“Now, our trainees graduate without any assistance to open up their shops. The situation has become too difficult for us here,” said Cynthia Adu, one of the leaders.

Abraham Donkor, Secretary for Twifo Tailors Association, described the lack of government support for the dressmaking business in the area as retrogressive, adding that the situation has negatively affected their livelihoods.

He expressed optimism that the NDC would save the situation by restoring the incentive packages, in addition to the implementation of new plans stipulated in its manifesto for the small scale dressmaking industry.

Mr Donkor indicated their desire to expand and modernise their business for enhanced service delivery, and, therefore, urged the NDC to consider facilitating the provision of industrial sewing machines for their area.

Addressing the dressmakers and other women groups gathered at the Forever Young training centre at Twifo-Hemang, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang thanked the group for the show of support, saying their testimony resonates with the good performance track record of the NDC administration.

“Good work always speaks,” she said, and assured them that “you can trust the NDC to work in your interest.”

  • EC urged to publish names of defective ID cards on website

Former President John Mahama has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to publish in full all names of applicants with defective ID cards on its website to ensure transparency in the voter exhibition exercise.

Mr Mahama expressed concern about the many irregularities which had characterised the ongoing voter exhibition exercise including omission of names, duplication of numbers, and wrong identities of registrants.

He stated that these anomalies if not resolved, would lead to political unrest, which may affect the country’s democratic values.

The former President said this on Thursday at a press conference in Accra to expressed the party’s dissatisfaction about irregularities at the ongoing voter exhibition exercise.

The exercise started from Friday, September 18 to 25, 2020 but was extended to Sunday, September 27 at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee on September 24.

He said selected exhibition centres in the Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti, Savannah, Volta and other Regions have witnessed anomalies which needed urgent attention to rectify the problem to avoid any untoward situation.

He said some EC officials were seen on social media printing new voter’s cards to individuals with duplicate ID cards numbers, without the notice of the political parties.

He said the conduct of the EC had generated anxiety from the public that the December polls would not be free and fair elections.

“These warning signs do not augur well for the country, we will resist any form of intimidation from all quarters because the sovereign power comes from the people,” he said.

Mr Mahama called on the Commission to begin a regular comprehensive and transparent dialogue with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee to resolve any electoral flaws ahead of the December polls.

He said over the years, the EC had had a cordial relationship with IPAC and assisted the Commission to carry out its constitutional duties and ensured general acceptance of election results.

Mr Mahama said the EC had ignored in recent times valuable advice from IPAC which had necessitated these occurrences in the electoral processes leading to the elections.

He said the party would not accept the results of a flawed election from the Commission.

He appealed to International Election Observers to focus their attention on Ghana and to monitor the country’s electoral processes.

Mr Mahama appealed to Ghanaians to visit the exhibition centres stations with their ID cards and ensure that their details were accurate in the register.

He urged the party’s executive to suspend all campaigns and monitor the voter exhibition exercise to avoid any form of manipulations.

Reacting to the issues, the Commission in a statement on September 21, explained that during the just ended registration exercise, few centres experienced the production of duplicate ID cards which resulted from registration kits bearing the same codes.

  • EC reacts: Allegations regarding removal of NDC supporters from voters register ‘unfounded’

The Electoral Commission has said that the allegations that it was removing the names of supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from the voters register ahead of Election 2020 was “unfounded.”

In a press statement issued Wednesday evening, [September 23, 2020], the EC said, “Our attention has been drawn to statements in the media by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer to the effect that the Electoral Commission is carrying out an agenda to remove the names of its supporters and sympathisers from the Voters Register.”

“This allegation is false,” the EC said in the press statement.

The NDC flagbearer, Mr John Dramani Mahama and his running mate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang on Tuesday cut short their campaign tours in the Bono and Central regions respectively.

They explained that they were returning to Accra to address issues of challenges with the provisional voters register for Election 2020.

Mr Mahama has scheduled a press address on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 1pm to speak on what he terms as “widespread anomalies” in the provisional voters register for Election 2020, which the Electoral Commission is currently exhibiting.

His spokesperson, James Agyenim-Boateng has explained that the address will focus on the “integrity challenges of the electoral process and unfolding events that threaten to undermine Ghana’s stability and democracy.”

    EC’s reaction

But reacting to the allegations, the Electoral Commission said it has, from the beginning of the compilation of the Voters Register, lived up to its motto of “Fairness, Transparency and Accountability.”

It explained that at every point, it has provided factual, accurate and evidence based information to its stakeholders on voter statistics per region, district, gender, age among others.

It added that to date every interested Ghanaian has information on the number of persons who registered in the just concluded Voter Registration Exercise based on the information the Commission provided.

“It is a paradox, therefore, to suggest that the same Commission now seeks to remove persons from the Voters Register. Had that been the agenda of the Commission, it would not have given detailed information to Stakeholders throughout the Registration process. We assure the general public that these allegations are unfounded.”

The EC explained that the exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register has been provided for in the Law (C.I. 91) and that the Law recognising that a registration process is not full proof, has provided a mechanism called “Exhibition” to allow citizens to verify their details to ensure that they are captured in the register or that their details such as sex, age, name are accurate.

It said the Exhibition also affords voters the opportunity to correct errors detected.

“Additionally, the Law provides for inclusion to allow persons who registered but whose names are not on the register, to file to be included in the register.”

According to the Electoral Commission, “this process is not new and has always formed part of our processes.”

It said in a nutshell, the exhibition exercise provides an opportunity to stakeholders to unearth problems with the register for the purpose of fixing it.

This, it said was exactly what the EC was doing. “We are fixing the issues unearthed.”

“We assure the public that the Commission is working to ensure the margin of error with the Voters Register is negligible. We are confident that at the end of the process, we will bequeath the nation with a register that reflects truth and integrity, a register that is credible and comprises eligible Ghanaians only. May God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong. Let Peace Reign,” the EC stated.

  • We didn’t endorse NDC – Asankrangwa Chiefs

Chiefs at Asankrangwa have denied reports circulating that they have endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the December 7 polls.

The Gyaasehene of Asankrangwa, Nana Adu Boahen is said to have made some statements to suggest they are solidly behind the NDC for victory, when NDC Running Mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang visited the Amenfi West constituency on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.

In a statement copied to Peacefmonline, the Chiefs want the general public to know that the words of the Gyaasehene have been misconstrued, hence the need to set the records straight.

”The language we employed in our speech is the language use for every Presidential candidate and running mate who pays a courtesy call on Nananom. The Divisional Council has the history of neutrality on politics. We do so, acutely aware of the political divide that has polarised our traditional area and constituency. Rather than endorse, we encourage–and that is what we did when the lady Professor took her turn to visit us. It’s unfortunate that the language of neutrality Nana Adu Boahen employed, perhaps with the embellishment of royal diplomatic semantics, didn’t sit well with sections of the public.

”We spoke, being aware that all political parties have an equal chance of emerging victorious on the December 7 election, hence our reference to the lady Professor that, being in the race, she like all other candidates, has the potential to emerge victorious. We asked that when she has her turn to be in power, she should remember our deplorable circumstances and help us.”

The Chiefs also stated emphatically that ”the act of political endorsement is alien to our standard of neutrality and therefore would not engage in this divisive scheme…”

    Read full statement below:

    WE DIDN’T ENDORSE NDC–ASANKRANGWA CHIEFS

The Asankrangwa Divisional Area of the Wassa Amenfi Divisional Council issues this explanatory note to clear the misconceptions arising out of the statement made by Nana Adu Boahen, when Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, the running mate to the NDC flag bearer visited the Amenfi West Constituency on the 15th September 2020. Nana Adu Boahen’s statement has been misconstrued, and we want to set the records straight as espoused below.

The language we employed in our speech is the language use for every Presidential candidate and running mate who pays a courtesy call on Nananom.

We spoke, being aware that all political parties have an equal chance of emerging victorious on the December 7 election, hence our reference to the lady Professor that, being in the race, she like all other candidates, has the potential to emerge victorious. We asked that when she has her turn to be in power, she should remember our deplorable circumstances and help us.

We spoke, knowing that any of the parties that comes to power on January 7 can potentially help us with development projects. As traditional rulers, we speak what will benefit the mass of our people.

This explanatory note does not proceed from prejudice, ill-will or fear; neither is it borne out of sychophancy or eye pleasing service. When it comes to Chiefs endorsing political parties and candidates, the Asankrangwa Divisional Area have the benefit of history that attest to our neutrality.

We stick to our statement that our area has long been neglected by politicians since 1992. This we reiterated during the visit of the Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, and we shall continue to engage any other visiting political party on such developmental issues.

In conclusion, we Nananom of the Asankragwa Divisional Area, wants to affirm that the act of political endorsement is alien to our standard of neutrality and therefore would not engage in this divisive scheme which have a strong potential of hurting our common purpose and unity as a nation.

  • NDC will promote modern industrial parks for garage owners – Mahama

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, has promised to build modern training centres to update the skills of garage owners to keep them in business.

Addressing artisans and garage owners in Tuobodom in the Techiman North constituency on Saturday as part of his three-day tour of the Bono East Region, Mr Mahama said the next NDC government will promote the development of industrial parks for garage owners and workers.

He said fully equipped industrial parks with diagnostic centres and other modern facilities for vehicle maintenance will be developed to train garage operators on the maintenance of cars with new and improved technology.

Mr Mahama says given the rapid deployment of new technologies in vehicles, it is imperative that garage owners and workers are given the needed training to make them relevant for their industry to keep them in employment.

“So, we are going to collaborate with the Eureka Garages Association, Suame Magazine Industrial Development Organisation in Kumasi and all other garage associations in the country to build the training centres with the modern diagnostic machine to train their members and be able to stay in business”, he added.

Mr Mahama also said government will engage master artisans such as masons, carpenters, fashion designers, hairdressers and seamstresses, among others, and pay the apprenticeship fees of all those who are willing to train under them in the various vocations. Those who complete the government-sponsored apprenticeship training, he said, will be provided the needed tools to enable them also set up their own businesses.

Mr Mahama therefore urged electorates to vote for him and the NDC in the December 7, 2020 general elections to enable the party fulfill its promises to the people of Ghana.

  • NPP under pressure because of NDCs manifesto – Political Analyst

A political analyst and sustainable development practitioner, Michael Ebo is claiming that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is under pressure following the launch of the manifesto of the opposition NationalDemocratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on Eboboba, a political show on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said although the government will not admit it, the NDC manifesto has brought them undue pressure.

He told host Kwabena Agyapong the government is under pressure because the NDC has given Ghanaians some alternative, adding, whether it is credible or not, a lot of people will fall for it.

He disclosed after the NDC manifesto launch, there was a small survey conducted by some intelligence units like the BNI and National Security and from what I have read, the Okada population will have an influence on the election.

“So clearly, the government have to do something about that,” he added.

He said it would be to the benefit of Ghanaians for us to have an issue bassed politics especially when political parties launch their policies and programmes before the election.

Touching on the decision by the government to pay all depositors of the various collapsed financial institutions, he said the government had no plans to pay the customers their deposits this year but the promise by the NDC influenced their u-turn.

“For the government to come back and say that now I have money to pay in cash, you should know that they are under pressure. And it is advice from a survey the security agencies have done. What the government have done; whether they admit or not, about 50% will be because of political expediency and not genuine thought.”

The NPP he stated might lose some votes due to this sudden u-turn.
