  • You can’t share laptops to students when they’re hungry – John Dumelo blasts gov’t

Ghanaian actor, politician, and farmer John Dumelo has strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he sees as misplaced priorities in the educational sector.

During an interview on Bola Ray’s Starr Chat, Dumelo expressed his discontent with the government’s focus on distributing laptops and tablets, stating that it deserves no commendation.

According to Dumelo, there are more urgent issues facing the country’s educational sector that require immediate attention.

He pointed out that students are lacking basic necessities like shelter and food, making the distribution of laptops and tablets seem insignificant in comparison.

“There are more pressing issues facing the educational sector than distributing laptops and tablets. Students have no place to sleep or food to eat, yet the government is prioritising these devices,” Dumelo emphasised.

He went on to criticise the government’s actions, stating that they deserve no praise or recognition for their misguided priorities.

“I will not salute a government for distributing laptops or tablets; they have done nothing. Students deserve better,” Dumelo concluded.

This highlights Dumelo’s strong stance on the need for the government to reassess its priorities and focus on addressing fundamental challenges in the education sector.

Bryan Acheampong reiterates ‘NPP will not hand over power to NDC’ comment

Member of Parliament for the Abetifi Constituency, Bryan Acheampong, reaffirmed his stance that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not concede power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 general elections, citing ongoing efforts to revitalise the economy.

Acheampong acknowledged the economic challenges facing Ghana but emphasised the NPP’s commitment to improving the situation and ensuring positive impacts on the lives of Ghanaians, intending to secure the party’s continued leadership.

Questioning the NDC’s readiness and ability to win elections, Acheampong stated, “Last year, I stood here in Mpraeso and said that whether NDC likes it or not they will never win the 2024 polls. If you don’t win an election, will power be handed over to you? We will not hand it over to them today or tomorrow,” he reiterated.

He continued “As at that time I made the statements, Ghana was confronted with economic challenges. Food inflation was around 61%. Inflation was around 55%. The prices of cement and iron rods went up. Contractors said because of the IMF program, they were not going to work.

“Agenda 111 projects came to a standstill. The dollar prices went up as high as GH¢19.00. Even at the time, in 2020, when we were in difficulty, the NDC was thinking that because we were in difficulty, Ghanaians were going to vote against the NPP. But I told you that before we will vote in the next election, the economy will be restored and Ghanaians will see the good works of the NPP government.”

He highlighted past economic difficulties and asserted that despite such challenges, the NPP’s governance would demonstrate significant progress before the upcoming elections.

What Bryan Acheampong said in April 2023

Bryan Acheampong, after a walk dubbed “Walk to Build A Better Ghana,” with a multitude of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters at Mpreaso-Kwahu in the Eastern Region on Saturday, April 8, 2023, stated that the ruling NPP will never hand over power to the opposition NDC in 2025.

He cautioned that the NPP would show the NDC that they have the “men” should they try to use threats and violence in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

“The NDC party will collapse. If the NDC dares to use threats, violence, and foolishness in the 2024 election, we will let them know we have the men. We will show them that we have the men.

“We have the men. It will never happen that we, the NPP, will stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC. It will never happen! We will make sure NPP remain in government at all cost,” he said.

NPP has reduced public administration to it’s newest low – Beatrice Annan leaks Cocobod document

Lawyer and Economic Policy Analyst Beatrice Annan has uncovered startling information regarding a procurement document linked to the Ghana Cocoa Board, revealing the purchase of 15 keyboards for a staggering amount of C4,500.00 each.

Expressing her dismay on Twitter, Annan criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of reducing public administration standards to new lows.

She questioned the need for such expensive equipment, highlighting the party’s previous claims of financial independence.

“The men they promised they have, never had iPads and Magic Keyboards before assuming power? These guys bragged that they had their own monies.

The newest low in public administration is always introduced by the NPP,” Beatrice Annan stated.

This revelation comes amidst ongoing controversies surrounding the Cocoa Board, which reported a GH¢2 billion loss in 2021.

During a hearing with Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Mr. Joseph Boahen Aidoo, the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, attributed the losses to various factors including the decline in international cocoa prices, smuggling, and illegal mining (galamsey).

The spotlight on extravagant spending raises concerns about transparency and accountability within the Cocoa Board’s operations.

My new tax reforms are carefully thought through to help growth of indigenous businesses – Bawumia

The Vice President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,  engaged in a fruitful dialogue with the Council of Indigenous Business Association of Ghana (CIBA), emphasising the careful design of his new tax reforms to bolster business growth, particularly for indigenous enterprises.

In his ongoing efforts to underscore his policies following a significant policy address last month, Dr. Bawumia interacted extensively with CIBA members, the largest informal business group in the nation, on Monday, March 25, in Accra.

Central to the discussion were Dr. Bawumia’s proposed tax reforms, including a tax amnesty slated for introduction in 2025 under a potential Bawumia administration, alongside a streamlined flat tax rate.

These measures, he explained, are intended to simplify tax processes for businesses, promoting their competitiveness and facilitating self-calculation and filing.

“The new tax reforms I have outlined, including the flat tax rate will make the tax system transparent and easy to calculate. For instance, if your tax is based on a simple percentage of your profit, you can easily calculate what you have to pay yourself and file your own tax. You don’t have to wait for any tax official to come to you and find the process difficult to understand.

“If the tax rate is flat, it will be more transparent, simple and easy to understand. This is what many businesses need to help them and also to make it very competitive for them. Many businesses and individuals continue to complain about the tax system, including the harassment they face. It is because the process is not transparent and you feel overburdened. We want to correct this and help your businesses grow,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He further elaborated on plans to stabilise import duties’ exchange rates and implement flat import duties on containers, ensuring predictability and fairness while safeguarding Ghana’s competitive edge in trade vis-à-vis neighbouring countries like Togo.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his commitment to abolishing the e-levy tax, underscoring its potential to further energise businesses and advance the country’s transition towards a cashless economy.

The interactive session with CIBA, representing a diverse range of sectors including garages, bars, beauty services, electronics, tailoring, and more, showcased Dr. Bawumia’s dedication to engaging stakeholders and crafting policies tailored to enhance the growth and competitiveness of indigenous businesses in Ghana.

Economically, Mahama has been the worst President to have ever led Ghana – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, took a firm stance against John Mahama, labeling him as Ghana’s worst President in history.

Dr. Bawumia criticised Mahama’s track record, citing failures in addressing corruption and economic challenges during his presidency.

Highlighting his own achievements as Vice President since 2017, Dr. Bawumia positioned himself as a problem solver and a candidate for forward-thinking leadership.

He emphasised the need for a leader who can fully utilise Ghana’s potential for development and pledged to be an accountable President if elected.

“Former President Mahama has been President before, but what was his track record? He failed.  He failed to tackle corruption and many problems. Economically, if you look at all the economic data in the 4th Republic, Mahama has been the worst President.

“John Mahama doesn’t represent change because he was there as President, and he has been rejected twice in 2016 and 2020. I have not been President before, and my record as Vice President is there for all to see. John Mahama represents the past and I represent the next chapter and future of our country,” Bawumia stated.

Dr. Bawumia also noted that Mahama’s past presidency and two consecutive rejections in 2016 and 2020 do not represent change, contrasting himself as a candidate for the next chapter and future of Ghana.

We scored 70%, NDC scored 30%, how can they be better than us? – Dr Bawumia quizzes

Vice President and the NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has refuted assertions suggesting that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) had governed better than the current administration.

Speaking at a recent address at an event organized by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, Dr Bawumia vehemently defended the NPP’s performance, asserting that the government had surpassed the NDC’s achievements in every sector of the economy, a sentiment echoed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA).

“At the State of the Nation yesterday, as I listened to him (President Akufo-Addo), it was very clear that our government has outperformed the NDC government in every sector. I mean every single sector. I can’t see one sector where they have outperformed us, but every single sector. Whether you are talking about jobs, whether you are talking about roads, whether you are talking about hospitals, whether you are talking about schools, or digitalization, across every sector,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

Expressing disbelief at comparisons drawn between the NPP and NDC governments, Dr. Bawumia likened the scenario to a contest where one party excels in every subject, yet the opposition insists they are superior.

He emphasized, “Meanwhile, they are trying to convince the public that they are better than you. What sort of mathematics is that? I mean, really, you score 70%, they score 30% and they are trying to say their 30% is better than you. It doesn’t make sense. So, in terms of the record, our record is superior.”

President Akufo-Addo’s SONA, delivered on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, emphasized the government’s accountability for the nation’s economic state and highlighted the threat of terrorism within the West African sub-region. The president also underscored his administration’s achievements, asserting that their tenure had surpassed the NDC’s eight years in office.

President Nana Akufo-Addo is reportedly facing internal party pressures to accept Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of choice for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

This is according to IMANI Africa’s Vice President, Bright Simons, who also asserts that the president is also allegedly dealing with growing calls from within the NPP for a possible ministerial reshuffle ahead of the upcoming elections.

The situation has sparked conversations about potential changes in key positions within the government.

Mr Simons, took to Twitter to highlight the growing tensions within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to Simons, the President is being urged to consider specific actions:

    3. Remove some top ministers perceived as distant from grassroots sentiments.

Simons, however, expressed skepticism, suggesting that the President may resist such pressures, stating, “This president hates pressure.”

According to some media reports and social media posts, Napo has emerged as one of the favourites of the party and the public to partner Bawumia, who is seen as the heir apparent of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He has also been endorsed by some groups and individuals, including the Council of Zongo Chiefs, who have urged Bawumia to select him as his partner .

However, Napo’s candidacy may face some opposition from some factions and regions within the party, who may prefer other candidates.

Oteng, who initially supported the NPP for its promises of free SHS and the National Cathedral project, now labels the latter as a “shame.”

In a recent TV3 interview, Cwesi Oteng did not mince his words, asserting, “Three reasons I rooted for the NPP are one, free SHS, and the National Cathedral. The National Cathedral is a shame. Renowned highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena declared that he no longer aligns with any political party, signaling a departure from his previous association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Back in 2016, Kwabena Kwabena fervently campaigned for the NPP, even releasing a campaign song and endorsing the party’s bid for power.

However, during a recent appearance on TV3’s New Day, he emphatically asserted, “I am completely out of politics. I am Ghanaian,” in response to questions about his involvement in the upcoming election.

  • I have peace, good sleep and everyone says I’m looking good after quitting NPP – Buabeng Asamoah

I have peace, good sleep and everyone says I’m looking good after quitting NPP – Buabeng Asamoah

Former Director of Communications and Spokesperson of Dr. Bawumia, now a member of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change (MFC), Buabeng Asamoah, says he has grown more handsome and nice since he parted ways with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His comments was in response to how life has been since his separation from the incumbent government during an interview on Kasapa FM on February 7, 2024, during an appearance on the Accra-based radio station.

“People say I look nicer after leaving NPP. That’s what everybody is saying. Whoever I meet says the same. I’m looking nicer,” he said as he burst into a loud laughter.

Responding to whether his membership in the NPP had an impact on his person, even to the extent of it affecting his looks, he admitted that “it is a huge task for one to give himself to serve others in leadership.

Because a leader is expected to lead his followers to see their aspirations come to fruition, however, once the guiding principles of the leader in leading his followers are frustrated along the line, it becomes a challenge.”

Consequently, he went on to defend the guiding principles of his new party, i.e., Alan Kyeremanten’s Movement for Change, which he claims has given him peace and a good sleep, as the MFC is a representation of the appropriate guiding principles to lead the good people of Ghana to the best.

Meanwhile, Buabeng Asamoah was stripped of his membership in the NPP on November 20, 2023, following his public endorsement of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who had resigned from the NPP in September 2023 to form a new movement called Movement for Change (MFC) and run as an independent presidential candidate.

The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, released a statement announcing that Boabeng Asamoah, along with three other MFC supporters—Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique—had automatically forfeited their membership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in accordance with the party’s constitution.

According to the NPP’s constitution, any member who aligns with a candidate outside of the party’s chosen nominee is deemed to have renounced their membership.

In an official statement, Adwoa Safo highlighted her enduring dedication to the NPP’s shared values and the collective goal of securing victory in the December 7, 2024, elections alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in their pursuit to “break the 8.”

‘’My attention has been drawn to several recent misinformation and speculation in the media regarding my political future in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency in particular and the New Patriotic Party as a whole’’.

‘’I wish to clarify, that despite the setback and outcome of last Saturday’s parliamentary primaries in Dome-Kwabenya, I remain steadfast in my commitment to the shared values of the New Patriotic Party and our corporate quest to break the 8 with H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia come December 7, 2024’’.

She explained that ‘’As a three-term Member of Parliament and a true party person, I am cognizant of the fundamental principles which underpin the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition for which internal competition and afterward cooperation, remains the guiding light’’.

She further used the opportunity to express her eternal appreciation to the good people of Dome-Kwabenya Constituency especially the hard-working Polling Station Executives for the opportunity to represent their interests and aspirations in the august house of Parliament in the last 12 years, adding that ‘’It has been a real honor and privilege working for and with you on matters and issues that border on our common interests and for which I do not take lightly. From the depths of my heart, I say Thank You’’.

‘’For the next few months, I remain dedicated to working collaboratively with the Leadership of the party in the constituency in collectively pursuing goals to unite us for the task ahead in campaigning to maximize our votes for both Parliamentary and Presidential candidates and in Parliament, to execute Government business expeditiously’’ she concluded in the statement posted on her Facebook page.

Adwoa Safo faced defeat at the hands of the Chief Executive Officer of the Free Zones Authority, Mike Oquaye Jnr, who secured over 1194 votes, while Adwoa Safo garnered 328 votes. A third candidate, Sheela Oppong Sakyi, placed third in the contest with just over 100 votes.

NPP primaries: Hackman Owusu-Agyemang’s name withdrawn from voter register

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juaben North, Hackman Owusu Agyemang, encountered a brief challenge during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries when his name couldn’t be located in the register upon his arrival at the constituency to vote.

The Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders disclosed the incident during an interview with Maxwell Kudekor from Adom News.

Despite the initial confusion, Mr. Agyemang reassured that the issue was swiftly resolved, allowing him to successfully cast his vote.

He humorously remarked, “When I came, they couldn’t find my name because I am the only founder, I guess, but eventually, it has been sorted, and I have voted.”
In response to the situation, Gary Nimako, the Director of Legal Affairs, attributed it to a minor procedural error.

He suggested that the glitch may have originated from the IT department, emphasizing the need for meticulous checking of names by aspirants and their teams.

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to conduct its parliamentary primaries in constituencies with sitting MPs today, January 27, 2024.

The polls are expected to occur in 105 constituencies nationwide, with a few incumbent MPs going unopposed.

The National Executive Council of the party earlier disqualified 17 persons from contesting in the parliamentary primaries, leaving 322 candidates to contest.

The primaries are deemed to be fiercely contested nationwide.

Some constituencies appear to be battlegrounds ahead of the polls, which will elect candidates for the party ahead of the December general election.

Adansi Asokwa, Dome Kwabenya, Asante Akim Central, Bantama, Tano North, Old Tafo and Bekwai are deemed to be battleground constituencies.

The party experienced a notable decline, losing 32 seats and reducing the numbers to 137, whilst the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) gained some seats, bringing their total to 137.

The NPP only regained the parliamentary majority when an independent candidate decided to align with them in Parliament.

The voting will commence at 0700 hours and end at 1400 hours today.

There would be no proxy voting.

In a statement dated January 19, 2024, the party urged aspirants and other stakeholders to comply with all regulations to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Adwoa Safo has confidently exercised her franchise in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries, held at the Atomic Basketball Park on Saturday morning.

The seasoned MP, seeking re-election, sported a jubilant smile as she navigated the voting process, extending greetings to delegates with a two-sure sign in the air.

Having narrowly secured victory in the 2020 primaries by eight votes, Adwoa Safo, despite facing challenges regarding her residency in the United States over the past three years, remains determined to retain her seat.

This election pits her against a formidable opponent, Michael Oquaye Jnr, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, who narrowly lost to her in the 2020 contest.

Adding a new dimension to the competition is Sheela Oppong Sakyi, a legal practitioner and strategist at the Office of the First Lady, introducing fresh dynamics to an already intense race for the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat.

The Majority Chief Whip, seeking a fourth term, faces a tough competition from Hayford Siaw, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Library Authority.

After casting his vote, Annoh-Dompreh affirmed his victory, stating, “I am winning, I told you before, I predicted 80 percent; it may be more.”

The MP praised the electoral process, highlighting its smooth and impressive nature.

He commended the high voter turnout and emphasised the absence of any significant issues, noting, “If you look at the turnout, it is impressive. I think it has been smooth, no hitches so far.”

Vote against every “Champion Atta” – Kwesi Pratt tells NPP delegates

The managing editor of the Insight Newspaper and a well-known journalist from Ghana, Kwesi Pratt Jr., harshly criticized Members of Parliament’s (MP) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a recent interview on Peace FM, charging them with only publicly acknowledging issues facing Ghanaians.

Describing unproductive MPs as “Champion Atta,” Pratt emphasised the need for elected officials to diligently fulfil their duties and serve the public interest.

He urged the Ghanaian electorate to make informed choices during the next general elections, emphasising the importance of voting against MPs who fail to live up to their responsibilities.

Addressing the issue directly, Pratt stated, “You are lucky you have been selected into a political office, you are a Member of Parliament, and all of a sudden you have grown horns. You have become a champion ‘Atta.’ If you are a champion ‘Atta,’ be rest assured another 4-year mandate will be over.”

He continued, “After the end of another 4 years, we will see the champion ‘Atta.’ Any champion ‘Atta’ this year, let’s vote against them. Let’s teach them a lesson, let’s not give them a chance. We are voting for Members of Parliament who can do their jobs diligently.”

The journalist’s remarks underscore a call for accountability and effective representation in Ghana’s political landscape, urging citizens to actively participate in shaping the future of their country by selecting MPs committed to serving the public.

Give total media blackout to Hawa Koomson – GJA president tells media houses

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has initiated a media blackout on Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson in response to the assault on one of its journalists, David Kobbina.

This means the media will not cover news related to or statements made by Hawa Koomson, possibly as a form of protest.

The unfortunate attack on the journalist occurred on January 4, 2024, sparking widespread condemnation. The attackers accused the victim of insulting Hawa Koomson on a TV show, a claim the victim denied, clarifying that he worked as a morning show host of a radio station.

In reaction, the GJA president, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to investigate and take action against those linked to the attack, while also calling on the Ghana Police Service to swiftly address the incident.

With both the NPP and the police failing to act, the GJA has now declared a media blackout against the NPP MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, during a press conference on Thursday, January 25, citing concerns about the safety of journalists.

Mr Dwumfour emphasised the minister’s association with individuals posing a threat to the media.

“This is the height of impunity, and we can no longer tolerate the same. We hereby serve notice that if by the close of Friday, January 12, 2024, these demands (sanctions) have not been met, we shall advise ourselves accordingly,” the GJA president said in reaction to the assault.

The blackout, endorsed by international stakeholders and senior journalists, is set to continue unless tangible actions are taken against the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, Hawa Koomson has denied any involvement in the assault, labelling the accusations as politically motivated attempts to tarnish her reputation.

In a related event, the GJA, in urging solidarity among journalists, has emphasised the need for prioritising safety in the upcoming NPP parliamentary primary elections while maintaining the highest levels of professionalism.

I supported NPP because of Free SHS policy – Kalybos

Richard Kweku Asante, a filmmaker and an entrepreneur popularly known as Kalybos, recently disclosed the rationale behind his endorsement of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2020 general elections, attributing his support to the party’s impactful Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

In an interview on TV3, Kalybos emphasized that his backing was specifically driven by the positive outcomes of the Free SHS policy, which not only eased personal financial burdens but also contributed to relieving families across the nation.

“My aim of supporting the New Patriotic Party was because of their Free SHS policy. Ever since the policy was implemented, I could actually save. That was my point of view. I didn’t go in for any other campaign, so when that was implemented, I had to be selfish for ones.”

According to Kalybos, the policy has saved numerous homes and relieved him of a great deal of responsibility.

“When you become the breadwinner, there are lot of responsibilities. I had to get my uncle’s supporting me through university and the burden becomes 10 times on you. But with free SHS, I have saved a lot of money”

Kalybos was among the group of actors who actively campaigned for the NPP leading to the party’s victory in the 2020 election.

He made his acting debut in the comedy video series Boys Kasa in 2012.

Richard Asante popularly known as Kalybos, is a Ghanaian actor and comedian who came to light through his role in the Boys Kasa comic series.

In 2017, he and his co-star from the Boys Kasa series, Patricia Opoku Agyemang, received a Black British Entertainment Award in London.

He has starred in several popular Ghanaian movies including Kalybos in China and Amakye and Dede.

3 of the big 6 are my relatives – Gabby Otchere Darko justifies family and friends gov’t

Ghanaian political figure Gabby Otchere Darko, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stirred controversy by asserting his familial ties to the historic Big 6, a group of influential leaders in Ghana’s political history.

In an exclusive interview with Bola Ray on the Star chat, Otchere Darko openly acknowledged his family’s connections within the government, shedding light on his roots in the Big 6.

The Big 6, comprising leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), played pivotal roles in the political landscape of the former British colony, later known as Ghana after gaining independence.

The notable figures of the Big 6 included Kwame Nkrumah, Ako Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, and William Ofori Atta.

Reflecting on his family’s legacy, Otchere Darko remarked, “Let me take my family, for instance. My own grandfather was a member of the legislative council, one of the first Africans in the council. I am talking about the history of the public service, my uncles and grandfather, including J.B. Danquah, Paa Willy, and all of them, they ended up being called the Big Six not because they contributed to independence, but because they were the front liners. Three of my family members are part of the six.”

Otchere Darko’s revelation adds a new dimension to the ongoing discussion about political lineage and family connections within the Ghanaian government.

As the controversy unfolds, it is likely to prompt further examination of the intersection between historical legacies and contemporary political dynamics in the country.

Fitch Solutions predicts an overrun in public expenditure ahead of December 2024 elections

In anticipation of the general elections scheduled for December 2024, Fitch Solutions is forecasting a notable rise in public expenditure.

Providing further details on its projection, the UK-based financial firm suggests that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to engage in substantial spending efforts to garner public support in its competition against the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s primary opposition party.

“A more expansionary fiscal stance will inject additional demand into the economy. While the authorities have confirmed their commitment to implementing fiscal reforms in line with Ghana’s IMF programme, we anticipate significant public expenditure overruns ahead of the December 2024 general election, particularly given that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) trails behind in the polls,” parts of a report from Fitch Solutions read.

According to Fitch Solutions, in the last century, the expenditure of successive governments during election years has increased by 3.0 per cent, representing the government’s tendency to subsidise utilities and implement social welfare programmes to garner public support.

“We anticipate that such measures will be implemented again in 2024, improving disposable incomes and stimulating household spending. All told, we forecast private consumption growth to tick up to 3.8% in 2024, up from 3.2% in 2023, contributing 2.9 percentage points to headline real GDP [Gross Domestic Product] growth.”.

Furthermore, the probable initiation of social support programs leading up to the December 2024 elections is expected to bolster disposable incomes and stimulate domestic consumption.

  • Dr Bawumia only had 15% of support from the Presidency – NPP Women’s organiser alleges

Dr Bawumia only had 15% of support from the Presidency – NPP Women’s organiser alleges

In a recent interview on Accra-based Peace FM, the National Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua, has made a striking revelation regarding Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumias level of support from the Presidency during the flagbearer elections.

According to her, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia did not win the party’s flagbearer elections because of President Akufo-Addo’s backing.

“People have the perception that Bawumia was voted for during the flagbearer elections because of President Akufo-Addo’s backing. I want to state that anyone asserting such is a liar because the only support I can confirm from the presidency for Bawumia’s victory is 15%,” Gyamfua boldly claimed.

“I am the one telling you, and let someone come and challenge it. This issue should not have been raised, but if they call me, I will go and defend it because I am tired,” she added.

Bawumia emerged as the flagbearer of the NPP following the party’s presidential primaries held on Saturday, November 4, 2023. He secured a significant victory, garnering 118,210 votes, which represents 61.43% of the total votes.

His closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, secured 71,996 votes, accounting for 37.41% of the vote share. The other two contestants, Dr. Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai Nimo, received 1,449 votes (0.75%) and 781 votes (0.41%), respectively.

Bawumia’s victory in the flagbearer race paves the way for him to lead the NPP in the forthcoming 2024 general elections. He will face prominent opponents, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and Alan Kyerematen in the 2024 elections.

This electoral outcome sets the stage for a competitive political landscape as the various candidates vie for the presidency.

  • NPP doesn’t exist anymore – Buaben Asamoa

NPP doesn’t exist anymore – Buaben Asamoa

Former Member of Parliament for Adentan Constituency and ex-NPP stalwart, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, declares that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) no longer exists, citing an overwhelming influence from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Buaben Asamoa, who recently abandoned his NPP membership along with three other influential figures to back independent presidential candidate John Alan Kyerematen, alleges that the party has been taken over by the president, transforming its character and fostering factionalism.

In an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face program, Buaben Asamoa expresses his concerns, stating, “The party has changed character; a party ought to be an association of like minds with freedom and opportunity to rub minds and seek out the best spaces. The New Patriotic Party that I knew in the beginning is not the New Patriotic Party that exists now. It’s become divided by heavy factionalism. Literally, it has been taken over by the executive, that is the blunt truth. The party doesn’t exist.

“The government has taken the party over, the personality of the president is overbearing and he controls that party, and that means that if you don’t do the president’s wish; if you are not in the president’s good books, you are not useful to that party. That is the bottom line, that is what is happening,” he added.

The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, announced on November 21, 2023, that Buaben Asamoa and three other stalwarts, Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique, had forfeited their membership of the party for endorsing and campaigning for Alan Kyerematen, who had resigned from the NPP ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.

Alan Kyerematen, who served as the Minister of Trade and Industry from 2017 to 2023 has formed a political movement called Movement for Change, with the Golden Butterfly as its symbol.

He has accused the government and the party’s leadership of unfair treatment and bias against him and his supporters. He has also alleged that the flagbearer contest was rigged in favour of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

MP’s salary wouldn’t suffice me, I can make about US$200k in a day – Berekum Chelsea CEO

Chief Executive Officer of Berekum Chelsea, Bernard Amofa Jantuah, has stressed that he doesn’t depend on politics for survival, asserting that he is already a self-made individual.

In an interview on Angel FM, Amofa, who is a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bantama Constituency, mentioned that he can effortlessly earn $200,000 as a private individual.

“If I should leave my business and become an MP (Member of Parliament), how much will I earn in a month? Multiply it by a year or 8 years and see. It is not even up to US$200,000. I can make it in a day.

“As I sit here with you, I don’t want to say some things. I have a contract to supply gold to Dubai in which we are talking about millions of dollars. I can show you proof that will shock you,” he added.

Mr. Jantuah, while underscoring his achievements as a businessman, warned his critics, reiterating that he doesn’t rely on politics for his sustenance.

As the bankroller of Berekum Chelsea, he participated in the internal elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2022, vying for the chairmanship position in the Bantama Constituency.

Mahama is no match for Bawumia when it comes to records and integrity – Deputy Speaker claims

1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has expressed the view that any astute Ghanaian would favour Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), over the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) candidate, ex-President John Dramani Mahama, for the next leadership role in Ghana.

He contends that a thorough examination of the track records of the two individuals would reveal that Dr. Bawumia surpasses Mahama. Osei Owusu, also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bekwai, further asserted that the vice president outshines Mahama in terms of competencies and personalities.

“(Dr Bawumia’s) chances are very bright… There are people who would vote for a party and a party symbol; there are no two ways about it. But anybody who wants to evaluate them has had their own independent and respective roles in the past (sic).

“I’m sure that if you place Bawumia against Mahama, Bawumia would always outshine Mahama,” he said in an interview on JoyNews on Monday, November 13, 2023.

He added that Bawumia outshines Mahama “based on what they have done in the past, what ideas they have thrown out, how they have helped implement them and their quality of person and integrity”.

What do you mean by “whatever it takes? – John Kwakye blast Justin over election win comments

Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has criticised the General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, for a statement he made regarding the party’s intentions to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

He referred to this statement as using inappropriate language and encouraged Mr. Kodua to adopt a more humble tone while appealing to the electorate to support the NPP.

John Kwakye further clarified that the NPP’s General Secretary cannot compel the Ghanaian people to vote for his party.

In a tweet, the IEA Director of Research said, “What do you mean by “whatever it takes”? It’s bad language. Be modest and appeal to the electorate to vote for you. You can’t force them to vote for you!”

Justin Frimpong Kodua, on October 29, 2023, indicated that the party will go to all lengths to retain power.

He said the focus of the party was to break the eight; therefore, anything that would make the dream a reality would be done.

Justin Kodua Frimpong made this known when he was asked if the party would consider talking to Alan Kyerematen about returning to the NPP.

He said, “Our focus is to win the elections in 2024, and for anything that needs to be done for us to win the elections, we are all up for it.”

In the latest development, the NPP has chosen Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 presidential elections.

Dr. Bawumia clinched the victory with a substantial 61.43% share of the total votes, while his closest competitor, Kennedy Agyapong, received 37.41% of the vote share.

The remaining two contestants, Dr. Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai Nimo, garnered a minimal 0.75% and 0.41%, respectively.

NPP primaries: Kofi Dzamesi’s supporters pick nomination form on his behalf

Close associates of the former Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Dzamesi, have taken steps to secure a nomination form for him at the party’s local office situated in Dzodze, within the Ketu North constituency of the Volta Region.

Identifying themselves as concerned electoral coordinators and polling station executives, these individuals collected the nomination form on Tuesday, August 1. During this event, they also introduced the “Dzamesi for 2024 Campaign.”

Following the acquisition of the nomination form, Charles Agbezuke, the spokesperson for the Dzamesi for 2024 Campaign, explained that they have engaged extensively with various stakeholders within the party.

This includes community-based groups, market women, and community leaders, all of whom have expressed support for Kofi Dzamesi.

Based on this support, they are advocating for him to become the parliamentary candidate for the Ketu North constituency in the upcoming 2024 election.

After obtaining the form, these supporters issued an official press statement, which was signed by Charles Agbezuke.

In this statement, it was emphasized that the former Minister possesses the qualities to effectively represent the NPP in the Ketu North Constituency.

They pointed out that since his emergence in 2004, Kofi Dzamesi has succeeded in altering the voting pattern within the constituency, making him the ideal candidate.

“Since 2004 when Hon. Kofi Dzamesi contested the parliamentary election for
the second time, his votes have seen a significant increase.

He polled 27% inthe 2004 general elections, 31% in 2008, 38% in 2016 and a whopping 45.7% during the 2020 elections”, a part of the statement read.

According to them, this development signifies a positive outcome for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency, while it poses a setback for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Additionally, supporters emphasized their preference for a candidate capable of securing the seat for the NPP, with Kofi Dzamesi being identified as the suitable individual.

“A strong parliamentary candidate has the potential to increase the presidential votes and for the Ketu North Constituency, Hon. Kofi Dzamesi has demonstrated on four occasions that he can help the party achieve its aim by not only increasing the presidential votes but to win the seat in 2024”, the statement read.

Charles Agbezuke, however called on the rank and file of the party to support Kofi Dzamesi in unity in order to maximise votes for the NPP and make the aspirant a Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu North.

The statement also called on the national leadership of the party not to only focus on the flagbearer but also focus on parliamentary candidates.

“To break the 8, the N.P.P must put its best foot forward not by only electing a
flag bearer that resonate with the masses and possess the magical solution to
Ghana’s problems, the party must also field strong parliamentary candidates
across the country to increase the presidential votes”, he read.

Kofi Dzamesi has contested the Ketu North constituency on the ticket of the NPP four times, and 2024 will be the 5th time he will be contesting. . According to election history in the constituency, he has increased both parliamentary and presidential results for NPP since 2004.

He is currently the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bui Power Authority. Kofi Dzamesi is a commercial farmer too.

  • Akufo-Addo’s comment on Gyakye Quayson going to jail embarassing – Martin Kpebu

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made controversial statements during a campaign rally for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the Assin North by-election on June 27.

In his remarks, the president alleged that a parliamentary aspirant, who was facing criminal charges, would be imprisoned and urged voters to reject him.

Legal expert Martin Kpebu, while speaking on TV3 on July 1, criticized the president’s comments, describing them as desperate and propagandist.

Kpebu emphasized that the president should not have involved himself in such claims under any circumstances.

“Akufo-Addo had no business going into the Gyakye Quayson trial.

It shows a man who was desperate and was clutching at straw… and it is good the good people of Assin North showed him that his propagandist style, his desperate move amounts to nothing.

“How can the president embarrass himself like that? As a lawyer as everybody has said it, in the past the president acquitted himself as an excellent lawyer but in the last two decades he has thrown everything away on the political platform,” Kpebu jabbed.

He accused Akufo-Addo of sacrificing his hard-earned reputation as a lawyer with the desire to come into and stay in office.

“Akufo-Addo has been shredding the reputation he has built over the years… One goof to the other, one goof to the other,” he added.

    The Assin North by-election

In the case of the June 27 by-election in Assin North, the Electoral Commission’s announced the NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson as winner having garnered a total of 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the total votes cast.

His closest contender, Charles Opoku of the NPP received 12,630 votes, accounting for 42.15% of the votes.

Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party Ghana (LPG) secured 87 votes, which represented 0.29% of the overall tally.

The by-election in Assin North was held to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following a legal battle that questioned Quayson’s eligibility to hold office due to dual citizenship concerns.

Minority in Parliament says it did not give its ‘blessings’ to new loans

The Minority in Parliament says it played its role in trying to prevent government from securing new loans, however, their efforts came to naught since they were eventually passed by Parliament.

According to the caucus, it did not give its blessings to the new loans and thus they were not approved unanimously.

The Minority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza thus wants the public to disregard assertions that they supported the approval of the new loans.

Mr Agbodza added that they will not support any new loan approvals for the government until the government’s reckless borrowings is brought under control.

“Let it be placed on record that the Minority was implacably opposed to these loans coming at a time our nation has defaulted on both domestic and external debt servicing and is struggling to secure an IMF program due to our debt overhang.

“Indeed, we took turns to express our opposition, and still stand firmly in our conviction that only an irresponsible and unpatriotic Majority Group will support any additional borrowing of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government that has defaulted on our debt repayments. Such recklessness will truly find expression in the Guinness Book of Records,” he said in a Facebook post.

Parliament on Tuesday approved an amount of $150 million dollars for the financing of the West Africa Food System Resilience Programme phase 2 under the Multi-phase programmatic approach.

Parliament also approved an on-lending agreement between the government and the Development Bank Ghana for an amount of £170 million Euros to support the establishment of a financially sustainable development Bank.

The House also approved a loan agreement between the government of Ghana and the World Bank for an amount of $200 million to finance the Ghana Digital Acceleration Project.

However, some New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs have said the loans were approved unanimously.

This is what has compelled the Minority Chief Whip to issue this the rebuttal.

  • Yaw Adomako Baafi talks why Bawumia is the best VEEP in Ghana’s history

Yaw Adomako Baafi talks why Bawumia is the best VEEP in Ghana’s history

Former Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Adomako Baafi has been speaking on why he thinks Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the most successful Vice President in the country’s history.

Mr. Yaw Adomako Baafi has also said the Vice President is fit to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hence those criticising his candidature might not know he is the one person who has a lot to offer.

“When you go through the history of Ghana from the era of Busia for the most successful Vice President, you can’t take out Dr. Bawumia”, Mr. Yaw Adomako Baafi told Hello FM in an interview monitored by MyNewsGH.com.

“President Akufo-Addo choosing Bawumia as running mate was an indication that he satisfied a lot of things in the party. He has proven his competence upon assumption of office in 2017”, he emphasized.

He argued that, though the 1992 Constitution of Ghana does not spell out specifically the role of a vice president, Dr. Bawumia has rolled out a lot of good initiatives for the country.

“The constitution is silent on the role of the Vice President therefore he can’t take any role unless in the absence of the President when he becomes the caretaker. But this man stood outside the box and brought digitization into the country”, he observed.

“He thought outside the box by bringing drones for the delivery of essential medicines to health facilities across the country. It took Bawumia’s research to secure victory for our victory in 2016”, he added.

Though Dr. Bawumia is yet to officially announce his intention to run as flagbearer of the NPP, details of a meeting with the Majority in Parliament on the matter leaked suggesting he will contest.

I was suspended 3 times because of Alan but he never called me even once – Former NPP chair

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman of Fomena Constituency, Mr Akwasi Nti, has made a painful revelation on why he abandoned the camp of Former Trades Minister, Alan Kyerematen.

According to the controversial politician, he had to cross carpet from the camp of John Alan Kyerematen because he felt neglected by the Former Trade and Industry Minister whom he had supported since 2007.

Declaring his support for the candidature of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, he disclosed that he was suspended three times by the party because of Mr Kyerematen, but the latter never bothered to check up on him.

“I am for Bawumia and I won’t hide it. I support Dr Bawumia 100% and I want him to succeed. I will work to ensure that this vision becomes a reality,” Mr Akwasi Nti promised in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel Fm.

Giving his reasons for supporting the Vice President, Mr Akwasi Nti revealed that, “my reason is that he is from the Dombo tradition and it is his turn to lead the party amidst his show of leadership and competence”.

Mr. Akwasi Nti claims that Alan Kyeremanten who is currently aspiring to lead the party did not show any form of care when he (Akwasi Nti) was suspended by the party.

“Everybody knew I was a supporter of Alan but I have been suspended three times when I was following him and he never picked up a phone to ask me how I was doing during those difficulties. I have been suspended for three times and nobody called me on the phone from his camp even to find out how I was doing.”

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set November 4, 2023, as the date for its presidential primaries to select a flagbearer for the general elections in 2024.

Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawimia though has not publicly declared his intentions to contest the election, indication by some leadership in the party shows he is likely to contest with many tagging him as the presumptive flagbearer considering the massive support from the grassroots.

  • NPP calls for Jaman South MP to be investigated over misappropriation of funds

NPP calls for Jaman South MP to be investigated over misappropriation of funds

Some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Jaman South have accused the MP for the Constituency of abusing funds allocated for development projects in the area.

Seen as development agents at the constituency level, Members of Parliament (MP) are expected to use their share of funds, including the District Assembly Common Fund and Social Intervention Fund (SIF), among others, to support pro-poor development activities in the communities to the benefit of the people.

But according to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Jaman South, their National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, Williams Okofo-Dateh, is doing the opposite.

They allege the MP is engaging in financial malfeasance and corrupt acts with approved project items or money by directorates of the assembly not disbursed. A situation, they said, is killing the development agenda of the municipality.

Hayford Techie, Jaman South constituency Deputy Organizer of the NPP

At a press conference in Drobo, Hayford Techie, Jaman South constituency Deputy Organizer of the NPP, accused Mr. Okofo-Dateh of colluding with suppliers to divert funds meant for the vulnerable, and school buildings at Anukunano, Miremano, and other communities, which is against the Procurement and Financial Management Acts, thereby depriving the people of the expected benefit.

“He (MP) has taken money to procure 600 bags of cement and 20 trips of sand to construct classroom blocks for the people of Anukunano, but our checks from the site indicate that after almost two years of taking that money, only 1,200 blocks have been molded. Again, Hon Okofo-Dateh has taken money for the Kwadwobadukrom project with virtually nothing to show for it,” he alleged.

A trip of sand and the blocks were on site near the dilapidated Anukunano MA JHS when JoyNews visited the cashew farming community.

Mr. Techie said the MP also took over 70,000 Cedis from the MP’s share of the common fund to purchase food items for the vulnerable in society during the 2021 Christmas celebration, however, their checks indicated “the items were diverted to party executives as Christmas gifts instead of the vulnerable in society”.

The NPP also alleged that 39,000 cedis the MP collected from the GETFUND meant for the purchase of about 300 bags of cement and 4 trips of sand to Miremano Islamic Primary, Ampenkro Asratoa M/A JHS, and Adamsu R/C JHS has still not been supplied despite inflating the prices of the items to about 15%.

The Jaman South NPP constituency secretary, Samuel Obeng Takyi, further alleged that building materials worth 20,000 cedis for the Miremano Islamic School resulted in a cash donation of 12,000 cedis to the school instead.

He explained that the MP, since coming into office, also took 60,000 cedis from his share of the social intervention fund to organize a football competition with 10,000, 7,000, and 3,000 cedis as prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams.

The competition, however, did not end as a result of alleged security concerns.

“One would have expected that if the competition didn’t end as expected, the 20,000 cedis award should have been paid back to where the money was taken from, but for almost two years now the money is nowhere to be found, all as a calculated vehicle to loot from the people”, Mr. Obeng Takyi alleged.

When contacted, the Jaman South Municipal Chief Executive, Andrews Bediako, corroborated the claims made against the MP, Okofo-Dateh, adding that there are invoices and receipts to show that monies duly paid to the MP ends up not being used for the intended purposes with many abandoned projects in the communities.

“He (MP) went to some churches to say that I have refused to sign the 2022 documents to enable him to provide items to the vulnerable. I was around, so I showed the 2021 beneficiary list to them, which included NDC constituency executives”, he said and added that the 2022 beneficiary list is even worse.

To remedy the situation, Mr. Bediako said he has control over those that come to him, adding, “I have written to the education and health directorates in charge of the GETFUND and the SIF not to make payment without my knowledge, else I will involve the NIB, whom I am already inviting to investigate these issues”.

He emphasized that the money is not the MP’s money that he can spend at will, hence he will not allow him to shortchange the people of Jaman South.

The party called all stakeholders, including the media, audit service, NIB, and opinion leaders, to get involved and join them to serve as watchdogs to funds received by the MP and hold him accountable.

Akufo-Addo’s silence on Gabby’s attack on Sophia worrying – ASEPA

Mensah Thompson, the executive director of ASEPA, claimed that a recent assault on retired Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo was regrettable, but that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s remarks on the subject are even more troubling.

On February 15, Thompson stated to Metro TV news that it appeared the president and the presidency had approved of Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko’s attack on the former CJ.

Otchere-Darko is a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Akufo-Addo, office of president, nobody has come out to issue a statement to categorically dissociate themselves from the statement of Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

“What it shows is that there is a certain level of tacit approval and support on the part of government and President Akufo-Addo for the comments of Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

“So, you will see that Gabby was insulting the Chief Justice on behalf of the president and that is the gospel truth. But who am I to intervene in a fight between two elephants?” he quizzed.

Thompson described Gabby as delusional and a spin doctor for government.

“Gabby has always been delusional we all know and we know one job he has been doing for this government is (as) a spin doctor. If you follow Gabby on social media, he is a spin doctor.

“What he does is that, he does damage control, political calumny, tries to drive attention from substantive issues, tries to set political agenda and try to dissuade people from taking certain decisions,” he stressed.

Gabby gets served by Sophia Akuffo

The ex-Chief Justice has become topical in the last few weeks after she joined colleague pensioner bondholders who had been picketing at the Ministry of Finance since February 6 demanding total exclusion from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP.)

Mrs. Akuffo’s involvement also saw her slam government’s handling of the programme and the general economic situation of the country.

She received heavy backlash via social media from New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

In her second appearance at the picket this week, she responded to Gabby’s critique among others by referring to him as a nuisance who did not matter to her and her life.

Meanwhile, government has closed the subscription window for the DDEP announcing an 85% subscription rate.

Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta told picketing pensioners on February 15 that their maturing coupons will be honoured even though they had opted against signing up, as in self-exempted from the programme.

Ofori-Atta appeared before Parliament to answer questions over the programme on February 16, 2023.

  • We are overwhelmed but those who enjoyed are quiet – Hopeson Adorye cries out over DDEP

We are overwhelmed but those who enjoyed are quiet – Hopeson Adorye cries out over DDEP

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hopeson Adorye, has charged the Ministry of Finance and its consultants who in his view benefitted from government bonds to take up the mantle of explaining to Ghanaians what the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) entails.

Hopeson Adorye claims that communicators of the governing party have been hanged out to dry by persons he believes enjoyed commissions from the bonds that have contributed to the country’s unsustainable debt levels.

The one-time parliamentary candidate of the party for the Kpone Katamanso constituency lamented on Peace FM that those who reaped benefits from the bonds have taken backstage while the persons he labels as ‘innocent’ have been commissioned to defend the DDEP.

He appealed to the Ministry of Finance to solicit the views of the Attorney-General before taking a decision on the domestic creditors.

He also urged Ken Ofori-Atta and his cohorts to exclude the individual bondholders in the arrangement, warning that any move contrary will worsen things for the government.

“We are overwhelmed by the situation. I believe by January 31 an agreement would have been reached and government would have adopted a position. We should make sure the final decision will be good news for Ghanaians. People want their money for various reasons so we should take a look at individual bondholders.

“There is a lot of money going waste that if we decide to be careful, we wouldn’t be in this situation. People have taken things free of charge and nothing happened. We have the money but we cant manage the money. We should seek the Attorney-General’s opinion on the matter. I believe the government will rescind the decision to go after the individual bondholders else we will know no peace in the country.

“Those who benefited will never come out and address the issue. When you say it, they accuse you of destroying the party but those who benefitted will never find time to explain it to the public. You are the one who took these decisions and benefitted from the bonds so you should be talking. Your consultants who benefitted should be doing the explanation on media platforms.

“They shouldn’t leave it to us the innocent people to struggle. People benefited and got commissions, they should be asking, how can you defend this? We have been overwhelmed by the whole thing so we need the consultants to come on media platforms. You can’t enjoy for us innocent people to suffer.

As part of conditionalities to achieve the IMF bailout, the government has recommended that all benefits due bondholders in 2023 will not be paid.

Per the arrangement, the payment of the benefits will resume in 2024 at the rate of 5%.

This arrangement has been widely criticized with critics saying that the government is worsening the situation of already burdened Ghanaians.
