NPP, NDC members will be a part of my ministerial team – Alan

Presidential candidate for the Alliance for Revolutionary Change, Alan Kyerematen, has unveiled his intention to appoint ministers from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if he wins the upcoming December 7 general elections.

In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Citi FM, Kyerematen emphasized his commitment to inclusivity and national unity, stating that half of his ministers would be selected from members of Parliament, regardless of their political affiliation.

Under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, the President is mandated to appoint at least half of his ministers from Parliament. Kyerematen asserted that his ministerial selections would prioritize individual merit over political allegiance.

“I am picking ministers not because they are NPP or NDC. I will pick them based on their own individual merits. It’s just that they are in Parliament, and I am required by the constitution to appoint at least half of my ministers from there,” Kyerematen explained.

He further expressed openness to considering members of other political parties who secure seats in Parliament, as well as independent candidates, reaffirming his commitment to a merit-based approach to governance.

Kyerematen’s proposal seeks to bridge political divides and foster collaboration across party lines within his administration.

We are not stealing NDC’s campaign strategy – NPP

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has strongly refuted accusations that his party is mimicking the campaign strategies of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This response follows recent remarks by the NDC’s General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, suggesting similarities in their campaign approaches.

Kodua dismissed Kwetey’s claims as “preposterous” during an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, July 2. He emphasized that the NPP’s engagement with voters through nationwide tours ahead of the December 7 general elections is a standard political practice, not an imitation of any other party’s strategy.

“The bottom line is, engaging with voters is a fundamental aspect of our campaign. Whether it’s meeting various groups, chiefs, or opinion leaders, every political party has the right to do so,” Kodua asserted.

He further clarified that the NPP’s approach to campaigning, which includes reaching out to diverse constituencies across the country, is driven by the necessity to connect with voters directly. Kodua pointed out instances where the NPP has visited constituencies ahead of the NDC, debunking any notion of copying campaign itineraries.

“Everywhere we go, they go, and vice versa. It’s about engaging with the electorate, and there’s no monopoly on how political parties conduct their outreach efforts,” Kodua remarked.

As the election season progresses, both the NPP and NDC continue to intensify their efforts to rally voter support through grassroots engagements and policy presentations. The debate over campaign strategies reflects the competitive nature of Ghanaian politics as parties vie for electoral victory.

NPP NEC to meet on Thursday over party’s choice as running mate

New Patriotic Party (NPP) plans to hold separate meetings for its National Executive Committee and National Council on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at different scheduled times.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is scheduled as
    follows:
    Date: Thursday, July 4, 2024 Time: 2:00 p.m.
    Venue: Asante Hall, Alisa Hotel

The National Council (NC) meeting is scheduled as follows:
    Date: Thursday, July 4, 2024 Time: 3:00 p.m.
    Venue: Asante Hall, Alisa Hotel.

According to sources within the party, discussions in both meetings primarily focus on the selection of the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming December 7 general election in 2024.

On July 1st, 2024, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia formally notified the National Officers of the NPP at their headquarters in Asylum Down about his choice of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as his running mate.

This announcement followed an earlier presentation of Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s nomination to the majority caucus of Parliament.

The final decision on the nomination now rests with the National Council, the ultimate approving body of the NPP.

Bawumia presents Napo to NPP national officers as his running mate for 2024 elections

Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana-B and the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, today officially declared his choice for running mate in the upcoming 2024 General Elections.

In a Facebook post made on Monday, July 1, Nana-B disclosed that Dr Bawumia communicated his selection of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, to the party’s national officers. The announcement was made following Dr Opoku Prempeh’s earlier nomination presentation to the majority caucus in Parliament.

“The meeting took place at the NPP’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, where Dr Bawumia informed the National Officers of the NPP about his decision,” Nana-B stated in his post.

The nomination of Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Dr Bawumia’s running mate is now pending the approval of the National Council, the final authority within the NPP for such appointments.

“A meeting of the National Council has been scheduled for Thursday, July 4, where Dr Bawumia will formally present his choice to them,” Nana-B further elaborated.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and the Minister for Energy, has been a prominent figure within the NPP and the government. His selection as running mate marks a strategic move by Dr Bawumia as the party gears up for the forthcoming elections.

The NPP continues its preparations for the 2024 elections with high expectations following this significant announcement, aiming to secure another term in office under the leadership of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Watch how you describe others – Afenyo-Markin reacts to critics of NAPO

Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from unjust criticism of potential candidates for the party’s vice-presidential ticket alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at a press conference held in Parliament on the matter, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the imperfection of individuals and the need for respectful discourse when discussing potential running mates.

He stressed the importance of unity and cohesion within the party as Dr. Bawumia proceeds with the selection process for the 2024 General Elections.

Afenyo-Markin also highlighted the responsibility of Members of Parliament (MPs) to exercise caution in their public statements concerning candidates vying for the NPP’s vice-presidential candidacy.

“None of us can tick every box. So let’s be careful how we describe each other; how we say things about our colleagues; how we approach things and the language we use. It may not be helpful,” he noted.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s counsel seems to directly address comments made by NPP MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, who previously voiced concerns about Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as a potential running mate.

Despite NAPO being seen as a valuable addition to the NPP’s electoral strategy by several seasoned political analysts, Appiah-Kubi was blunt in his assertion that NAPO was not suitable to partner with Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 General Elections.

  • NAPO: The Grandson of Asantehene, a reason behind his choosing as Bawumia’s running mate?

NAPO: The Grandson of Asantehene, a reason behind his choosing as Bawumia’s running mate?

With an official announcement anticipated soon, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is poised to be named as the presidential running mate by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 general elections.

Political analysts and supporters of Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasize that his selection is pivotal in rallying support and strengthening the party’s dominance in the Ashanti Region.

They believe his nomination carries added significance due to his ties with the Ashanti royal family and the Manhyia Palace.

    NAPO’s connection with Manhyia

NAPO was born to Ohenena Kwame Kyeretwie and Madam Elizabeth Akosua Nyarko. His father, one of the many sons of the 14th Asantehene, Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II, made significant contributions during his reign.

Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie played a key role in the establishment of Prempeh College, a well-regarded all-boys boarding school in Kumasi. He also donated land for the creation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which honored him with an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1969.

As the son of the Asantehene, Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie served as the chief of Apagya in the Afigya Kwabre District for more than forty years until his passing on June 23, 2013.

    Leveraging royalty for political support

The Manhyia Palace, home to the Asantehene, stands not just as a physical landmark but as a central hub of cultural and political influence in the Ashanti Region.

NAPO’s deep-rooted connection with Manhyia has shaped both his personal identity and political career significantly.

As a direct descendant of Ashanti royalty, NAPO carries the weight of tradition and the expectations that come with his heritage.

His nomination as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate is seen as a strategic move that resonates strongly with the people of the Ashanti Region, who view him as a symbol of their values and aspirations.

The Ashanti Region has long been a stronghold for the NPP, and NAPO’s candidacy is expected to bolster this support even further. His royal lineage, combined with his political expertise, positions him uniquely within the party and makes him a compelling choice for voters.

In terms of political experience, NAPO has served as a Member of Parliament since 2009 and held the pivotal role of Minister for Education during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term.

His tenure as education minister was marked by significant achievements, notably the implementation of the government’s flagship Free Senior High School policy.

Currently, NAPO serves as the Minister for Energy, overseeing the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of energy policies, as well as coordinating activities across Energy Sector Agencies.

He will face off against Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who also boasts a distinguished career as an education minister under a previous NDC administration.

Stop saying bad things about each other because of Bawumia’s running mate choice – Afenyo-Markin to NPP MPs

Effutu MP and Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued a stern warning to his colleagues and party sympathizers within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to avoid internal conflicts as the party prepares to announce its running mate for the 2024 elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Afenyo-Markin stressed the importance of unity over division, especially as the decision regarding a running mate for the NPP’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, remains pending.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for NPP members, particularly MPs, to exercise caution in their public statements and interactions about the running mate selection process.

“We’ve all heard the discussions about who might be the running mate, but no final decision has been made. The party has structures in place to handle this,” he stated.

He encouraged his colleagues to focus on collective goals rather than personal preferences.

The Effutu MP highlighted the potential harm of unguarded remarks, urging his colleagues to be mindful of their language.

None of us is perfect. We must be careful about how we describe each other and the words we use. Such language may not be helpful,” he said.

He assured that Dr. Bawumia, with input from party elders, would select a running mate who best serves the party’s interests.

Recent reports indicate that Dr. Bawumia has consulted President Akufo-Addo regarding his choice of running mate for the December 7 presidential election.

During a meeting at the Jubilee House on June 25, Bawumia presented Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, for consideration. President Akufo-Addo provided feedback and ultimately accepted Bawumia’s choice.

However, this decision has not been universally welcomed within the party. Andy Appiah-Kubi, a member of the NPP’s National Council and MP for Asante Akim North, voiced his opposition.

He argued that Dr. Opoku Prempeh lacks broad support within the party, particularly among MPs, and may struggle to campaign effectively across various constituencies.

“We need someone who can engage with the grassroots, deliver votes, submit to the presidency, and bridge the gap between Parliament and the executive,” Appiah-Kubi stated.

Ablakwa calls out SNNIT over Freddie Blay’s revelation of son’s bid in sale of shares

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has responded to comments made by former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, about the bidding process for the sale of majority government shares in hotels owned by the state pensions body, SSNIT.

In an interview with Accra-based media house, Blay revealed that his son, in collaboration with a consortium of banks, had placed a bid ranging from US$150 to US$200 million for SSNIT’s shares in a group of hotels.

Blay and his son have consistently denied allegations made by Ablakwa, accusing them of state capture in the acquisition of a portion of the Labadi Beach Hotel beachfront.

Ablakwa, in his response to Blay’s remarks regarding the bid amount, highlighted public records indicating that the eventual successful bidder, Rock City Hotels Limited, had valued SSNIT’s properties at US$61 million.

Rock City Hotels is owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and the Minister of Agriculture.

Ablakwa’s post on social media (June 25) read as follows: “Unending murkiness. We were told Bryan Acheampong offered the highest bid of US$61million; now former NPP Chairman, Freddie Blay also says his 34 year old son offered “150 to 200 million” for the SSNIT hotels.

“Another clear justification for my RTI Request for the tender evaluation report and minutes of tender committee meetings. State Capture shall surely be defeated!”

Last week, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa spearheaded a protest called the #HandOffOurHotelsDemo in Accra.

The demonstrators marched from the Labadi and La Palm Beach hotels, and Ablakwa delivered a 15-point petition to the president, urging the cancellation of the planned sale of these hotels.

The presidency has not yet issued a formal response to the petition.

Additionally, Ablakwa has filed a complaint with CHRAJ against the minister, citing a conflict of interest.

  • NPP’s Mahama Kabiru barred from presenting himself as PC for Walewale

NPP’s Mahama Kabiru barred from presenting himself as PC for Walewale

The High Court in Tamale has placed an injunction on Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, preventing him from presenting himself as the elected parliamentary candidate (PC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Walewale constituency in the North East Region.

This ruling, delivered by Justice Richard Kugyapaw on Monday, June 24, is in response to a legal challenge by the current Member of Parliament (MP), Hajia Lariba Zuweratu, against the election results.

Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and special advisor to the Vice President, emerged victorious in a closely contested primary held in January.

He narrowly defeated Hajia Lariba by securing 345 votes against her 338, in an election conducted under tight security and attended by regional and constituency executives.

Following the primary, Hajia Lariba disputed the results, filing an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court. She accused Dr. Kabiru, the party, and the Electoral Commission of electoral irregularities and misconduct, seeking an injunction to prevent Dr. Kabiru from declaring himself the winner.

The court has now granted this request, barring Dr. Kabiru from assuming the position.

In addition to Dr. Kabiru and Hajia Lariba, two other candidates participated in the primary: Tahiru Sham-Una, who received 145 votes, and Jangdoo Mahama, who received 1 vote.

Initially, the NPP, named as a third defendant, attempted to have the case dismissed on the grounds that Hajia Lariba had not exhausted the party’s internal conflict resolution mechanisms before approaching the court.

Prior to this ruling, NPP supporters in the Walewale constituency held a press conference urging the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to intervene and resolve the dispute.

They warned that a prolonged conflict could harm the party’s chances in the upcoming general elections.

In March, the High Court granted the NPP’s request to settle the dispute out of court. However, in a session on March 15, the court declined to dismiss the case and fined the party GH¢8000. Despite agreeing to an out-of-court settlement, the court has now intervened with an injunction against Dr. Kabiru, underscoring the ongoing tensions within the party.

My mission is to give quality education to all young individuals in Anyaa-Sowutoum – Emmanuel Tobbin

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Anyaa-Sowutoum, Emmanuel Tobbin, has pledged to ensure that every child in his constituency receives an education if elected as Member of Parliament (MP).

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Tobbin emphasized his belief in education as a crucial tool for bridging socioeconomic disparities, underscoring his commitment to this cause.

“For the youth, I am focusing on education. It is the only thing that brings equality between the poor and the rich, so I will do all that I can to ensure that all children in Anyaa-Sowutoum are well educated. We have already started; this year, I paid for the mock examinations for public school children across the entire constituency,” he stated.

When asked about his motivation for seeking the Anyaa-Sowutoum seat following the NPP parliamentary primaries in January, Tobbin cited his deep Christian faith and aspiration to serve as a catalyst for community development.

“When you are a person of God and you love God, you help people just as God does. Choosing to serve the people is akin to doing the work of God. Personally, I believe that the Christian and Muslim communities should take up the mantle of leadership to make it a better place to live,” he stated.

A former businessman-turned-politician, Tobbin described himself as selfless and committed to advancing development in the constituency. He outlined plans to empower women, particularly mothers, through loans and training to bolster their businesses.

See how the cedi will do from tomorrow forward – Finance Minister boasts about govt’s performance

Finance Minister Dr. Amin Adam has confidently forecasted a rebound of the Ghanaian Cedi against the US dollar after its recent depreciation against other major currencies.

The minister, who is also the MP for Karaga, made this assertion while announcing the successful completion of the government’s debt restructuring program with official creditors.

Dr. Amin Adam highlighted that the restructuring of $5.1 billion in debt with these creditors, alongside the completed restructuring of $13.1 billion with Eurobond holders, will restore economic confidence.

This renewed confidence is expected to attract investors to the local economy, thereby strengthening the cedi.

“Watch the cedi to the dollar after tomorrow… Let’s watch it and see; the confidence will come,” he stated.

“The investors will return to Ghana, and the growth trajectory will even become clearer for all of us,” Dr. Amin Adam added.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in the UK over the weekend, Finance Minister Dr. Amin Adam lauded the economic management by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He expressed confidence in the NPP’s prospects of winning the 2024 general elections against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“On the economy, our record is better than their record. On the size of the economy, we’ve done better than them. On per capita income, we’ve done better than them.

On job creation, we’ve done better than them. On economic growth, we’ve done better than them,” the minister said.

Video: Afari Military Hospital left to rot in the Ashanti Region; concerned citizen ‘cries’

A concerned citizen has lamented the deplorable state of the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region.

In a tweet shared by @YayraKoku and seen by TIG.post, a man describes how the 500-bed capacity hospital could serve over six communities once completed adding that, the abandoned hospital is larger than the ‘famous’ Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

“This is Atwima Nwabiagya, where the Afari Government Hospital is located. This hospital, with a 500-bed capacity, is larger than Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, yet it has been neglected and is now overrun with weeds” he fumed.

He stated that the current administration has repeatedly promised to commission the hospital, but these promises have yet to be fulfilled.

“The cars parked here are engulfed by vegetation, and while there are quarters for workers, the entire area is abandoned, guarded only by security personnel

It’s been eight years, and every year brings new promises about its commissioning” he said.

He recounts how the Vice president and flagbearer of the ruling NPP Dr Bawumia promised to commission to the two hospitals in August during his campaign tour to the Ashanti Region expressong his doubts over the potency of such promise being fulfilled.

Considering the current state of the hospital, he asked ” Does this look like a hospital that can be commissioned in August?”

During his visit to the Ashanti region, the Vice President mentioned that both the Afari Military Hospital and the Sewia Hospital would be commissioned by August 2024″ he continued.

He urged the government o halt some of the Agenda 111 project to focus on the completion of the Afari Military Hospital.

“Instead of pursuing the Agenda 111 project in Kumasi, can’t we focus on completing these two hospitals first? They could serve around ten constituencies. It’s frustrating to see such a significant facility left to deteriorate, especially when it has the potential to provide crucial healthcare services” he said.

    About Afari Hospital

The Afari Community Hospital, also known as the Afari Military Hospital, is located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Its construction began in 2014 during the presidency of John Dramani Mahama under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. The project was initiated as part of a broader effort to improve healthcare infrastructure across the country.

The hospital was intended to be a state-of-the-art facility with modern medical equipment to provide high-quality healthcare services to the military personnel and the general public. It was part of a series of health infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in Ghana.

The current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has continued the project. However, there have been delays and challenges in its final completion and operationalization.

  • Leaked NIB report on NAPO and NPP running mate selection stuns many

Leaked NIB report on NAPO and NPP running mate selection stuns many

A confidential report from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) choice of a running mate has been leaked, causing a stir in the political arena.

The report is based on a survey conducted among 5,116 party members over two days in mid-June. It provides insights into the party’s preferences and internal dynamics.

The survey aimed to measure support for Dr Yaw Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, also known as NAPO, who is currently the Minister of Energy and represents Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region.

Initial reports suggested strong backing for NAPO, with some indicating up to 70 percent support for his candidacy as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer.

However, the leaked report reveals that 84 percent of respondents saw NAPO as the best choice for Dr Bawumia, and 88 percent considered him the party’s preferred candidate.

Interestingly, 89 percent were open to any candidate chosen by Dr. Bawumia. This challenges earlier assumptions and highlights the members’ flexibility regarding the running mate selection.

Critics have questioned the NIB’s methodology and conclusions, accusing the bureau of bias. Some party members and political analysts suggest that the survey might have favoured NAPO by limiting respondents’ choices, potentially skewing the results.

The report has sparked a debate about transparency and inclusivity within the NPP’s decision-making process. Concerns have been raised about the exclusion of prominent female figures, despite their significant contributions to the party.

In response to the leaked report, party members have expressed differing opinions. Some continue to support NAPO’s candidacy, while others see it as an attempt to pressure Dr. Bawumia into selecting NAPO as his running mate.

The leaked NIB report has exposed internal divisions within the NPP and ignited a debate about fairness and the integrity of the party’s nomination process.

With elections approaching, the NPP leadership faces the challenge of navigating these issues to achieve electoral success.

NAPO’s vice presidency bid: NIB report shows 89% of NPP supporters are open to any candidate

A confidential report from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) regarding the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) selection of a running mate has been leaked, causing significant upheaval in the political landscape.

Based on a nationwide survey of 5,116 party members over two days in mid-June, the report offers a deep look into the party’s internal dynamics and preferences.

The survey aimed to measure support for Dr. Yaw Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the current Minister of Energy from Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region.

While initial speculation suggested strong support for NAPO, with some reports claiming up to 70 percent backing his candidacy as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, the leaked report reveals a different story.

It shows that 84 percent of respondents see NAPO as the best pairing for Dr. Bawumia, with 88 percent considering him the party’s preferred choice. Surprisingly, 89 percent are open to any candidate selected by Dr. Bawumia.

This revelation challenges previous assumptions and highlights party members’ flexibility regarding the running mate selection.

Critics have questioned the NIB’s methodology and conclusions, accusing the bureau of bias. They suggest the survey may have been designed to favor NAPO by limiting respondents’ options to him and a few others, potentially skewing the results.

The report has also sparked a broader debate about transparency and inclusivity within the NPP’s decision-making process. Questions have been raised about the exclusion of prominent female figures from consideration, despite their significant contributions to the party.

In response, party members have expressed mixed opinions. While some support NAPO’s candidacy, others criticize what they see as an attempt to pressure Dr. Bawumia into selecting NAPO as his running mate.

The leaked NIB report has exposed internal divisions within the NPP and ignited a debate about fairness and the integrity of the party’s nomination process.

With elections approaching, the NPP leadership faces a challenging task in navigating these issues to ensure electoral success.

CSU management probes attack on student, offers psycho-social support

Christian Service University (CSU) is taking steps to address an alleged attack on one of its students during a public lecture addressed by former President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

In a statement issued by the University and copied to the Ghana News Agency, CSU expressed regret over the isolated incident, noting that the public lecture was generally successful.

The Dean of Students, on behalf of the management, has reached out to the student to provide necessary psycho-social support.

“As an academic institution, we believe in multiparty democracy as the bedrock for sustainable development and security in Ghana. We consistently maintain neutrality in all our dealings with the established political order of the day,” the statement read.

CSU highlighted numerous public lectures organized by the University over the years with distinguished personalities as guest speakers.

As part of its one-year-long activities marking the 50th anniversary of the University, three public lectures have been lined up by the planning committee.

Beyond the lecture addressed by Former President Mahama, two more are scheduled to be addressed by the Vice President and Flag Bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and an alumnus of the University.

The objective of these lectures is to partner with political figures to conceptualize new ways of sustaining democracy and the recovery of the Ghanaian economy.

The University reiterated its commitment to praying and working towards peace and harmony in Ghana. The 50th-anniversary celebrations are scheduled to be climaxed with a grand durbar on September 27, 2024.

CSU’s response underscores its dedication to ensuring the well-being of its students and its role in promoting democracy and national development.

Probe alleged assault on CSU student by NDC members – NPP tells Police

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communication Director, Richard Ahiagbah, has strongly condemned the alleged assault on a student at Christian Service University College by individuals believed to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The incident reportedly occurred during a speech by former President John Mahama when Nana Boakye, a student, retorted, “Mahama will lose,” in response to remarks about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer.

Richard Ahiagbah visited Nana Boakye on Saturday, June 22, to express his support and solidarity. He emphasized that no Ghanaian should endure such “senseless and lawless” abuse for exercising their right to free speech.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for anyone to be assaulted for merely expressing their opinion. Nana Boakye did nothing wrong by disagreeing with former President Mahama. The attempt by the Ashanti NDC to downplay this issue is equally troubling,” Ahiagbah stated.

He called for immediate action from law enforcement authorities, criticizing the police for their inaction in apprehending the perpetrators.

“It is deeply troubling that the police have not taken action to arrest those responsible for this vicious assault on Nana Boakye. We demand justice for him and a thorough investigation into this matter.”

Mr Ahiagbah urged the government and relevant authorities to ensure the protection of free speech and hold those responsible for such acts of violence accountable.

He stressed the importance of maintaining a society where individuals can freely express their opinions without fear of retribution.

  • You can’t be president if you can’t decide on your running mate – Former NPP MP to Bawumia

You can’t be president if you can’t decide on your running mate – Former NPP MP to Bawumia

Former Member of Parliament for Obuasi-East, Edward Ennin, has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, for failing to announce his running mate for the 2024 elections.

Mr Ennin suggested that this delay casts doubt on Dr. Bawumia’s preparedness and capability for the presidency.

Mr Ennin expressed confusion over Dr. Bawumia’s indecision, emphasizing that the NPP flagbearer has the constitutional right to choose a running mate who can aid him in his administration.

He speculated that internal disagreements within the Jubilee House might be causing the delay, leading to Dr. Bawumia’s hesitation.

“What amazes me is that former President Kuffour clearly and openly chose his running mate, and so did Akufo-Addo. Now it is Dr. Bawumia’s time to decide who he wants, and the information that keeps reaching us is that people in the Jubilee House do not like the candidate Dr. Bawumia prefers.

“If you are a flagbearer of a major party like the NPP and you’re being frightened to choose the running mate you like, then how can he be president?

“He doesn’t have the boldness to be president. Is he not a man? The constitution has given him the right to choose, is he not man enough to?” he stated.

He continued, “How can he be President if a small decision like this he can’t make because people are influencing him? Then he can’t do the job. How can he be President?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has emerged as the preferred choice of running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, according to a survey conducted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Following him is Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education and MP for the Bosomtwe constituency, who garnered 10.1% of the responses from the polled executives.

Other notable personalities considered as potential running mates include Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church of Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.

You can’t conduct NPP political polls with our taxes – Ablakwa fires NIB

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has voiced strong objections to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), a state intelligence institution, conducting a poll funded by taxpayers to select a running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mr Ablakwa criticized the government for using a state institution to conduct a poll about the selection of a running mate for its flagbearer.

He argued that if the government wants to conduct such a poll, it should use party funds and engage academics or other organizations, rather than using state funds.

“There are so many organizations in this country, academics in the universities – go and engage them with your party money – dues from your members. Don’t use our organization, a state-run organization run with our taxes. This is abuse of office,” he emphasized.

Mr Ablakwa’s remarks follow reports that the NIB conducted a survey on a potential running mate for the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The survey indicated that Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was widely preferred over Education Minister Dr. Osei Adutwum and other party members as the running mate.

Mr Ablakwa questioned the relevance of conducting such a poll for a governing party’s running mate and emphasized that the job of the NIB is to prioritize the national security interests of the country.

“How does choosing NAPO, Adutwum or whoever become relevant to the national security interest of our country? Serious mandate given to this body and you go about conducting NPP polls – with my taxpayer’s money? How do they expect NDC members to feel, neutrals to feel? That’s what they are doing with our taxes,” he added.

Ghana’s 8-year political cycle is hindering development – Former NPP MP

The former Member of Parliament for Ayensuano Constituency, Eastern Region, Samuel Ayeh-Paye has voiced concerns over Ghana’s practice of changing governments every eight years, describing it as detrimental to the country’s development trajectory.

Samuel Ayeh-Paye who is affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), criticized this recurring pattern in Ghana’s democratic process, asserting that it hampers nation-building efforts.

During an interview on the Angel Morning Show on Thursday, June 20, 2024, Ayeh-Paye urged eligible voters to carefully consider their choices in general elections, emphasizing the need for a departure from the norm to foster sustainable development.

“A country that has made it a norm for change of government every eight years is not a good practice and it won’t help. It doesn’t help countries like Ghana because we are a developing country,” he said.

He argued for extending the term of incumbent governments beyond eight years, suggesting that continuity could better facilitate the transformative reforms needed for national progress.

“So it would be very necessary to allow one political party to stay in power for long since longevity would help for the good of the country in development.”

Highlighting the achievements of President Akufo-Addo’s administration under the NPP, Ayeh-Paye called on Ghanaians to trust and support the party in upcoming elections.

“So, we plead on Ghanaians to repost their trust in us [NPP] because we remain the only political party who is capable of fixing the economy,” he urged.

Soldiers reportedly attack NPP’s Savannah Regional Vice Chair, another

Reports emerging from Bole in the Savannah Region suggest that soldiers sent to a galamsey area have allegedly brutalised the Vice Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yakubu Mahama.

The incident is linked to the deployment of soldiers purportedly to protect Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining activities in the region.

The altercation began when Yakubu Mahama reportedly sought a meeting with the leader of the military team. Tensions escalated into a scuffle between the soldiers and the NPP Vice Regional Chairman.

According to Citinewsroom, witnesses reported that the situation worsened when Mahama’s brother called the NPP Secretary for Bole-Bamboi. The secretary arrived at the Bole Police Station accompanied by a group of young men, which reportedly intensified the conflict.

According to sources, the soldiers responded with gunfire and allegedly assaulted the NPP Vice Regional Chairman during the confrontation. Mahama’s brother issued a stern warning to the soldiers, asserting that such actions would not be tolerated.

Further details regarding the incident remain unclear, and calls for an investigation into the actions of the soldiers have been made.

The involvement of Chinese nationals in illegal mining continues to be a contentious issue, with accusations of complicity and protection by certain military personnel.

NPP will soon release 300 state-owned companies sold to persons now criticizing sale of SSNIT-owned hotels – Deputy Info. Minister

The Deputy Minister for Information has announced that the NPP will soon release a list of 300 state-owned companies sold to individuals who are now criticizing the sale of SSNIT-owned hotel shares to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Sylvester Tetteh made this announcement while condemning the June 18, 2024 ‘Hands Off Our Hotels Demonstration’ led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, which protested the sale of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust shares. He stated that the list would be published in the coming weeks.

Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of Good Morning Ghana, the deputy minister asserted that the demonstration and the concerns over the hotel sales are being used by Ablakwa and the NDC to score political points.

“For me, I think that where we are today, yes it is true that we must speak up, we must stand up for matters that we are not happy about, but due process must also be followed. So, I think that hitting the street to find political gain and political advantage of it is not the right approach.

“We, in the subsequent weeks, will begin to update Ghanaians on how 300 companies ended up with some individuals, and today they are pontificating more righteously than the Pope himself. Stay tuned,” he said.

He said that some of the people who are not talking about the sale of the SSNIT hotels and accusing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of state capture were quiet when properties of the state were being sold to bigwigs of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) when they were in power.

He began his statement by sharing a brief of state-owned properties sold to NDC members, including properties of the Ghana National Trading Corporation (GNTC) and the Ambassador Hotel.

“But the people who have suddenly found their voices against the sale of state assets, I believe that they should have questioned how GNTC Bakeries at La, GNTC Bakeries at Kumasi, GNTC Bakeries at Takoradi, GNTC Supermarket Dansoman, GNTC Supermarket Kanda, GNTC Supermarket at Ringway were sold.

“How the Kumasi Catering Rest House was sold, how the Ambassador Hotel was sold, and the beneficiaries of all these properties over a period of time and how ownership has changed over a period of time. And some of them who are still within the NDC are still holding on to these properties,” he said.

NPP is ten times more corrupt than the NDC – NPP regional chairman aspirant

Prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adum Bawuah, has criticised Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration as the most corrupt since Ghana’s independence.

During a media interaction, Bawuah expressed deep concern over the widespread corruption within the current government.

He asserted that the NPP is ten times more corrupt than the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“In a country where people are stashing money under their beds and in polytanks, Akufo-Addo’s government stands out as the most corrupt ever in the history of Ghana,” Adum Bawuah declared.

“I am part of the party, but I speak for Ghana first. Ofosu Ampofo recently had to seek healthcare in America, and I had a friend who was part of those who collected funds to pay for his bills.

The NDC is corrupt, but the NPP is ten times more corrupt,” he stated.

“The construction of a cathedral has been riddled with corruption, which has led to the project being stalled. At the Pwalugu Dam site, not even a bulb has been installed, yet we have spent $12 million on it, while Ato Forson is in court for $2.7 million,” he added.

Adum Bawuah warned that members of the current government involved in corruption will face consequences when power shifts in 2025.

Bawuah, who ran unsuccessfully for the New Patriotic Party chairmanship in the Ashanti Region during the party’s regional executive election in May 2022, expressed his concerns during a media appearance.

  • “Oh how? This has to be fake” – Gabby’s reaction to mandatory NHIS for foreigners arriving in Ghana

“Oh how? This has to be fake” – Gabby’s reaction to mandatory NHIS for foreigners arriving in Ghana

Prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has voiced his disagreement with the government’s decision to require mandatory registration with the National Health Insurance Scheme for foreigners entering the country.

Starting July 1, 2024, non-resident visitors to Ghana will need to have a health insurance policy before being allowed entry.

Reacting to this development on X, Otchere-Darko expressed his reservations about the policy on Sunday, June 17, 2024.

“Oh how? This has to be fake!” he wrote.

Ghana introduced the mandatory health insurance policy to ensure that all visitors receive the necessary healthcare services during their stay.

The policy mandates that all non-resident visitors entering Ghana must enrol in a scheme that provides them with free healthcare access.

The policy applies to visitors who enter through airports with a visa or visa on arrival, and it is dependent on their duration of stay in Ghana.

In February 2024, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority and other stakeholders, launched the “National Non-resident Visitors Health Insurance” policy.

This initiative targets non-residents visiting Ghana for less than six months within a 12-month period.

Dr. Isaac Morrison, Vice Chairman of the Technical Working Group on the Visitors Health Insurance Scheme and a member of the NHIA Board, highlighted the importance of this policy at a media briefing before its implementation.

“The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the vulnerability of foreign nationals without insurance, necessitating the activation of Section 2b of the National Health Insurance Act, 2012 (Act 852), which calls for a health insurance policy for foreigners.

Countries like Sierra Leone and Egypt in Africa have already implemented similar schemes.

The policy ensures that visitors are covered, reflecting lessons learned from the pandemic and fulfilling a legal requirement,” he explained.

  • I am sorry for not informing you of my move to Kumasi to support Bawumia – Ken Agyapong

I am sorry for not informing you of my move to Kumasi to support Bawumia – Ken Agyapong

Assin Central Member of Parliament and former contender for the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearership position, Kennedy Agyapong, has apologized to his supporters for not informing them before joining the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his campaign team on the Ashanti Regional campaign tour.

Kennedy Agyapong, on June 11, joined the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team in the Ashanti Region, ahead of the country’s upcoming polls.

Earlier, Alex Tetteh, a prominent figure in Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign and the convener for Citizen Eye, Ghana revealed that the MP would be joining the party’s flagbearer.

Mr Agyapong left the United States to bolster the New Patriotic Party’s efforts towards securing a victory.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia held a three-day tour of the Ashanti Region as part of campaign activities.

At his 64th birthday celebration, Mr Agyapong made it clear that he has not resigned from the NPP and is not considering running as an independent candidate.

He urged the supporters of the Vice President and his own supporters to unite ahead of the December elections.

“It didn’t go well with some of you. Let me apologise for not informing you before I went there,” he said.

He added, ” what I want the party people to know is that I have not resigned from the party. I am not going independent. I am still an NPP member. As I am a party member, no matter what happened during the primaries, I think we are all party people and it will be best for us to come together, so I am pleading with my supporters. Let’s use my birthday to reconcile.

He continued, “I am also appealing to the Vice President’s supporters, I know they are intimidating my supporters. If they want us to come together and unite, then they should also reciprocate the same favours I am rendering, on behalf of my supporters. So I am pleading with both sides. There is no Kennedy Agyapong supporters, there is no Vice President supporters, we have NPP supporters.”

“I am not selfish. People have come to me to go independent, but that is not the wise thing to do and therefore I have refused to do that,” he further stated.

Meanwhile, well-known musician and media personality, Blakk Rasta openly criticized Kennedy Agyapong for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP flagbearer.

Rasta pointed out that Agyapong had previously vowed not to support Bawumia due to unresolved issues, making his current endorsement confusing.

Blakk Rasta feels that Agyapong’s decision to publicly support Bawumia ahead of the 2024 elections could damage his political career, considering the party’s internal dynamics.

Speaking on the UrbanBlend show on 3FM, Rasta condemned the advisers who pushed Agyapong to endorse Bawumia, calling it an ill-advised decision with potentially negative repercussions.

Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong, during a recent visit to the Ashanti Region to help in Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, had a confrontation with New Patriotic Party (NPP) members.

In a widely circulated video on social media, Agyapong can be seen seated in the front of his car in the Kwabre East constituency, while individuals believed to be his backers expressed discontent over the region’s developmental shortcomings.

“Since 1992, we have voted for the NPP but haven’t benefited in any meaningful way,” one said before another joined: “You are the very one that we want.

We will die of hunger if you leave us behind; we will suffer.”

“If we vote NDC and they don’t develop this area, it is no news; but to vote NPP and suffer such neglect is unfair for an area said to be a municipality; what is the evidence?” another asked.

The NPP considers the Ashanti Region a stronghold crucial for securing sufficient votes to surpass the 8.

Vice President Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, concluded a successful three-day campaign tour of the region.

Bawumia emerged victorious in the NPP flagbearership contest late last year, prevailing over Agyapong and other contenders.

NDC officials fined GHC 10k, 10 sheep, boxes of Heineken to reverse curses invoked at Effutuakwa

Effutuakwa Traditional Council has found officials of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Assin Central Constituency guilty of breaching the council’s customary rules in the Fosu Municipality, Central Region.

As part of their penalty, they have been instructed to provide ten sheep, six boxes of Heineken Aromatic Schnapps, and GH¢10,000.00 within two weeks for the necessary rituals to revoke curses.

According to Kasapa News’ Yaw Boagyan, they are also mandated to visit the towns of Antoa and Assin Nyankomasi, where they invoked powerful deities, to perform rituals to nullify the curses.

The directive, issued by Assin Fosu Queenmother Nana Afranse IV and Okumaneng Baffuor Asare Kyeahene II on behalf of the Traditional Council, serves as a stern warning to others.

The NDC had accused the NPP’s parliamentary candidate of busing individuals from Kasoa to transfer their votes to the Assin Central Constituency.

In response, aggrieved party members slaughtered sheep to invoke the river gods, Antoa Nyama and Betinsin, against anyone planning to manipulate the December general election in Assin Central Constituency.

The invocation of curses by Assin Central NDC Women’s Organiser Agartha Yawson and her group prompted community reports, leading to the party’s summons before the traditional authorities.

Chiefs and elders expressed dismay over the party officials’ curse invocation, stressing that such actions are forbidden in the community.

“Invoking curses is not allowed on Effutuakwa land; the act of invoking curses should not have happened. It is an act that the traditional authority strongly disapproves of. If you invoke a curse and slaughter a sheep, causing blood to spill onto the ground, it signifies a call for blood. It is taboo to call for the blood of any inhabitant of this community.

There are severe consequences for invoking curses, and we, as leaders of this community, do not wish to experience any calamity. That is why we have summoned you here to reverse the curses you have cast. We must appease the gods and other spirits on Effutuakwa land for what has transpired.

“As politicians, you dine together and socialise together, but when you appear on radio and TV, you act like enemies, yet we know you are friends. So why is it that, in your quest for political power, you wish to harm the people of this land?

We have never heard John Mahama, Bawumia, Asiedu Nketiah, or NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua invoke a curse. So why is it that those lower down the political ladder are the ones invoking curses, willing to harm each other to gain political power?” Chief Okumaneng Baffuor Asare Kyeahene II inquired.

  • You’ve left Parliament to follow ‘azonto dancing Bawumia’ – Murtala Mohammed slams NPP MPs

Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, has criticized the Majority Caucus for their consistent absence from parliamentary sessions since the House reconvened from recess on Tuesday, June 11.

Mr Murtala expressed disappointment that some members of the Majority have prioritized campaign tours with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over their legislative duties.

Speaking passionately on the floor of parliament on Thursday, June 13, Mohammed lamented the lack of seriousness displayed by his colleagues on the Majority side.

He called upon the leadership of the Majority to address what he described as the “unseriousness” of their members and urged them to prioritize their parliamentary responsibilities.

Specifically targeting Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Murtala Mohammed criticized him for failing to ensure adequate attendance of his caucus members in parliament.

He argued that it is the duty of the Majority Leader to ensure that members are present to conduct the business of parliament effectively on behalf of their constituents.

The MP for Tamale Central highlighted the importance of parliamentary attendance in deliberating and passing crucial legislation that affects the lives of Ghanaian citizens. He emphasized that absenteeism undermines the functioning of parliament and diminishes its ability to fulfill its constitutional mandate.

“My point has to do with the unseriousness of the team that he [Alexander Afenyo-Markin] leads. They are only seven. [Wednesday, June 12], they were just five. Now, you think that it is important for us to do business without members of the Majority?

“I came to Parliament by eight o’clock and registered. Your members are still not here. They are following your presidential candidate dancing Azonto and saying, give me the steer. If you want us to take you seriously, then have control over the people that you lead,” he said.

The criticism comes amidst concerns about the dwindling numbers in parliament during crucial legislative sessions, raising questions about the commitment of lawmakers to their parliamentary duties.

The Women’s Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Mfantseman constituency of the Central Region, Naomi Efua Acquah, has officially resigned from her position.

In a statement dated June 12, 2024, Madam Acquah explained her decision, citing a range of challenges, including intimidation, insults, segregation, discrimination, and other personal reasons.

She stressed that these difficulties have significantly impacted her health and well-being, making it untenable for her to continue in her role.

“I appreciate the opportunities I have had to serve and empower women in our community. I am proud of the work we have done together and I will also hold onto the memories as samples of partisan politics,” Madam Acquah stated.

She emphasized the need to prioritize her health and safety, noting that the negative energy associated with her position had taken a considerable toll on her.

NPP’s Ernest Frimpong granted bail after arrest

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Amenfi East Constituency, Ernest Frimpong, has been released by the Tarkwa Police Command in the Western Region.

Mr. Frimpong was released on Wednesday evening after the police took a statement from him regarding his comments in a viral video.

The candidate’s arrest followed the circulation of a video in which he appeared to urge miners to retaliate against police officers and soldiers who attempt to extort money from them.

In the video, Mr. Frimpong purportedly claims that government initiatives such as #OperationGalamStop, #OperationVanguard, and #OperationHalt I & II have been suspended, implying a green light for galamsayers to mine without interference from law enforcement.

Furthermore, Mr. Frimpong was seen promising to establish a WhatsApp platform for miners to report encounters with uniformed personnel, including soldiers, and pledging swift action from local authorities. He allegedly encouraged galamsayers to confront any officer attempting to halt their activities.

Ernest Frimpong has denied these allegations, asserting that he did not endorse illegal mining or encourage miners to fight military personnel.

He claimed that his remarks were taken out of context from a two-hour engagement with artisanal small-scale miners and emphasized that his intentions were misrepresented.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive for Wassa Amenfi East, Frederick Korankye, has condemned Frimpong’s comments.

Mr Korankye urged miners to cooperate with security officers as part of efforts to eliminate illegal mining activities in the community.

“The government is ready to facilitate the documents for you to do your work according to the guidelines set out in the mining laws. So that is what I will plead with the miners. In fact, the land belongs to us so we cannot look unconcerned for them to destroy it the way it is.”

“So once a while, the military will come and then make sure that they do the right thing. At the beginning of every year, there are rampant armed robbery cases over here, and when it happens like that, we rely on these security services to come and assist, so we cannot be attacking them and then later come and call them to come and help us,” he said.

Give me 8 years, I will be accountable to you – Bawumia tells Ghanaians

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to offer greater accountability to Ghanaians compared to his chief rival, former President John Mahama, should he win the presidential election on December 7.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that his commitment to accountability stems from his intention to seek re-election after his first term.

Speaking to professional bodies in Kumasi during his three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, the Vice President contended that Mr. Mahama, on the other hand, would lack the same level of accountability as he would not be pursuing re-election.

“I also believe that if you make me a president, I will be more accountable to you because I will be looking for an 8-year term. An 8-year term means that you are first going to give me a 4-year term, this means I have to work very hard to justify why you have to give me another four years.

“And so I will be more accountable. I will come back to you and say this is what I have been able to do and then you can you will renew my license and I will drive the vehicle so we go forward.

“I believe that my main opponent is only looking for a four-year term, that means immediately you give it to him and he goes on his honeymoon and he comes back you will not see him again. there will be no accountability but for me, you will get accountability.”

The Vice President also revealed that the Ministry of Finance is preparing to reimburse clients of companies that were liquidated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) during the financial clean-up exercise.

Dr. Bawumia stated that this initiative aims to provide relief to affected investors while ensuring transparency and accountability in the financial market.

“It looks like the Minister of Finance is looking forward to making some payment to customers of the liquidated companies.”

“In the case of Gold Coast Securities and others, it is something on our agenda and I believe that the Ministry of Finance will look at it. We have engaged affected customers and we look forward to the payment”.

You must not be allowed to hold public office – UG Lecturer slams NPP PC for instigating attacks on soldiers

Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has stated that any politician who supports illegal mining, given its devastating impact on the country’s natural resources, should be condemned.

His remarks come in response to the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for Amenfi East, Ernest Frimpong, who urged illegal miners to confront soldiers attempting to stop their activities.

In a widely circulated video, Mr Frimpong is seen advising a group of alleged illegal miners to resist military officers patrolling the area and trying to evict them, emphasizing that no military personnel had been authorized to manage the sites and encouraging miners to defend themselves if necessary.

Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who also heads the region’s Security Council, was also present at the forum.

Discussing the issue on the JoyNews AM Show, Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that such individuals should not be permitted to hold public office.

“Look at the effect of galamsey on the production of food, on the production of cocoa and then on health. Look at the consequences that we have from these illegal activities and what even the country has not turned its attention to; the issue with our neighbors.

“How we pollute their water bodies and sooner than later they are going to take us on. Look at the kidney problems that we have, which a lot have been attributed to the fact that we have poisonous substances in our waterbodies.

“So for somebody who is holding a political office to urge people along this negative path, I believe it is a wrong move. These type of people should not be encouraged to hold public office because all they want is to have political power and it doesn’t matter how society survives or not”.

He also urged security agencies to detain the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for questioning to deter others from inciting the public against police and military personnel while they perform their duties.

“If that is what the man is saying, then I think the security people must talk to him’, he stressed.

Mr. Ernest Frimpong has clarified suggestions that he encouraged illegal miners to persist in their activities and defend themselves against military personnel in the area.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Sunday, June 9, Mr. Frimpong confirmed that he was the person in the video but denied interacting with illegal miners, explaining that he was addressing miners in the community.

“I am saying that if the people in uniform can go to the length of engaging civilians in a business to torment miners who are legally working, then, they should be exposed because once you do that, you are deviating from what you are supposed to do,” he said.

He also alleged that legal miners are attacked, extorted, and have their equipment destroyed by individuals linked to the NDC who have connections in the security service. He stated that this is done to create dissatisfaction with the government, which is why he gave the advice.

It is unlawful to encourage Ghanaians to attack soldiers – GAF condemns NPP PC

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning to the public in response to the spread of viral videos on social media that promote attacks on soldiers and other security personnel.

This warning follows a directive from Ernest Frimpong, the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for Amenfi East, who urged illegal miners to confront soldiers attempting to stop their mining activities in the area.

In a viral video, Frimpong is seen addressing a group, presumably illegal miners, encouraging them to resist military officers who are patrolling the area and trying to evict them.

He stated that no military personnel had been authorized to manage the mining sites at this time and urged miners to defend themselves if necessary.

Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who also heads the region’s Security Council, was also present at the forum.

In response, GAF highlighted that such actions are illegal and pose a significant threat to national security and stability.

GAF warned that the repercussions of such confrontations could be severe, stressing the importance of avoiding such incidents.

They reiterated that assaulting or attacking soldiers is a serious crime punishable by law and urged all citizens to respect, cooperate with, and support the Armed Forces.

The statement called for public cooperation to avoid engaging in or promoting violence against soldiers.

The Ghana Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, integrity, and service to the nation. They emphasized their cooperation with other security agencies to safeguard Ghana’s interests while respecting citizens’ rights and dignity.

GAF encouraged the public to voice their concerns or grievances through the Department of Public Relations, maintaining an open-door policy for addressing issues constructively.

  • NPP to fly flags at half-mast for 7 days to mourn death of S.B Kangbere

NPP to fly flags at half-mast for 7 days to mourn death of S.B Kangbere

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed profound sorrow over the untimely death of Saabanye Basilide Kangbere, the Upper West regional chairman of the Party, who passed away on 7 June 2024.

In a press statement signed by the general secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP extends its deepest condolences to his family, especially his wife, and children, and to the people of the Upper West Region for the loss of such a distinguished figure.

As a tribute to his memory, the NPP has directed that all party flags fly at half-mast for the next seven days.

Kangbere, affectionately known as “Chairman Heavy Weight” in political circles, has been the regional chairman since 2018 and previously served as a patron of the regional party.

Kangbere’s journey to prominence began in Owlo, a small town in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa district of the Upper West Region, where he excelled in his Common Entrance Examinations.

His academic prowess led him to the prestigious Daffiama Secondary School, followed by a distinguished performance in his sixth-form examinations.

He furthered his education at a College of Education and later at the University of Ghana, where he majored in English.

During his time at the University of Ghana, Kangbere developed a fervent passion for politics and social issues, joining student activist groups.

As secretary of the Students Representatives Council, he collaborated with notable figures such as Frederick Worsemao Armah Blay from 1977 to 1978, opposing the imposition of the Union Government (UNIGOV) by the Supreme Military Council of Ignatius Kutu Acheampong. This resistance was crucial in preventing Ghana from becoming a non-party state.

Beyond politics, Kangbere had a rich career in education and business, teaching in several deprived communities in the Upper West Region, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia.

He also established several English teaching schools in Saudi Arabia, some of which remain operational today.

A devoted Catholic, husband, father of five, and noble family man, Kangbere’s legacy is one of dedication, hard work, and profound impact.

NPP flags fly half-mast in honour of late Upper West Chairman

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has paid tribute to its late Upper West Chairman, Dr. Saanbaye Basilide Kangbere. The party has also ordered flags to be flown at half-mast in his honor.

Dr. Kangbere, fondly known as Chairman Heavy Weight in political circles, passed away at his home in Adjringano, Accra, on Friday, June 7, 2024.

In a statement released on Friday, the NPP reminisced about the late Chairman’s remarkable journey.

Despite his humble beginnings, he successfully passed his Common Entrance Examinations in Owlo, a small town in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa district of the Upper West Region, and went on to study at the prestigious Daffiama Secondary School.

“Mr. Kangbere would again achieve another academic milestone as he passed with distinction, his Sixth Form Examinations before gaining admission to be trained as a teacher in a College of Education and subsequently to the University of Ghana where he majored in English.”

“As fate would have it, Mr. Kangbere would develop a relentless passion for politics and other matters of social concern while studying at the University of Ghana and became part of student activist groups. Upon his election as Secretary of the Students Representatives Council, he would team up with young men like Frederick Worsemao Armah Blay from 1977 to1978, and fearlessly opposed clandestine attempts by the Supreme Military Council of Ignatius Kutu Acheampong to impose the so-called Union Government (UNIGOV) on Ghanaians,” it stated.

The NPP highlighted that Dr. Kangbere’s accomplishments extended beyond politics, as he also pursued careers in teaching and business.

“In the most part of his adult life, he taught for several years in numerous deprived communities in the Upper West Region and Nigeria, and later in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. He also set up several English teaching schools in Saudi Arabia, some of which are still operational.”

“Mr. Kangbere was a devoted Catholic, husband, father of five and also a noble family man on whose shoulders several people from across the length and breadth of Ghana and even beyond were nurtured,” it stated.

Despite the loss, the NPP expressed comfort in Dr. Kangbere’s legacy of hard work and dedication to the country. The party also extended its deepest condolences to his bereaved family, especially his wife and children, and to the people of the Upper West Region for the loss of such a distinguished son of the land.

“As a mark of respect in his honour, the Party directs that all Party flags fly at half-mast for the next seven days,” it added.

In 2022, Dr. Kangbere was reelected as the Upper West Regional Chairman of the NPP, narrowly defeating his main contender, Alhaji Mahama Toyina.

Alleged NDC Dep. Youth Organiser curses NPP members for illegal transfer of votes

Curses have been invoked on some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for allegedly engaging in illegal vote transfers, a move that could potentially skew the voter base in favour of the NPP.

An alleged Deputy Youth Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nkoranza North constituency, Atta Kwame, has accused the NPP of bussing people from outside the constituency to transfer their votes.

As a form of retribution, Mr Atta Kwame, in a fervent display of anger and frustration, resorted to invoking curses.

The incident took place as tensions ran high at the EC registration centre.

How TV3 COO tried to coerce Bridget Otoo to speak for NPP

Media personality Bridget Otoo has opened up about some of the unfavourable circumstances she faced while working as a multimedia journalist at Media General (TV3).

In a one-on-one interview on the KSM show, Bridget Otoo noted that she got attacked over her criticism of an IEA debate ahead of the 2016 elections. Bridget did not find the debate unnecessary, as she believed it would not change much regarding the country’s governance.

According to her, current Electoral Commission boss, Jean Mensa, who was then with the IEA wrote to the TV3 management over her alleged intimidation of presenters and guests while on air.

“It was such a terrible thing they wrote. That doctor wrote to General Manager of TV3 then. The CEO at the time called me and said be nice to these NPP people. I got the impression that they were all pro-NPP. It is fine, we all have our biases.”

However, Bridget Otoo decided to stand her ground and according to her, this cost her the opportunity to be on air any longer.

“They took me off air. They just halt your career. They are telling you we decide how far you are going to go,” she said.

She noted that while at the media house, a current Minister requested that she join the New Patriotic Party’s communication team to help push the party’s narratives and agenda.

She noted that she denied the request. “I was just not interested. It was a no,” she said.

According to Bridget Otoo, she now values her presence on social media more than being on television as she gets the opportunity to freely share her thoughts on issues that borders on the wellbeing of citizens.

In 2016, it was reported that management of Tv3 suspended Bridget Otoo, one of the female hosts of its morning show on the back that she was unprofessional and undisciplined.

Election 2024: Suhum NPP MP who lost primaries goes Independent in new posters

In the Suhum Municipality, fresh posters featuring Oboafo Kwadjo Asante, the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, have emerged.

Despite his loss in the last primaries, these posters suggest Asante’s intention to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate in the upcoming general election.

Emblazoned with the slogan “Maintain – Hon Oboafo Kwadjo Asante as MP. The King of Development,” the posters indicate Asante’s defiance against his party’s decision.

The appearance of these posters has generated considerable interest in the constituency, with branded materials like flyers and banners carrying messages such as “The Development King” and “Oboafo Toaso” circulating widely.

Moreover, vehicles showcasing his images suggest a well-organized campaign strategy.

Although Asante has yet to officially declare his intentions, sources close to him indicate that encouragement from market women and other community stakeholders has prompted him to consider this move.

His recent community development projects, including the construction of a new football pitch and bridge, have further enhanced his reputation as a committed public servant.

Meanwhile, the political atmosphere in Suhum remains tense, with Asante and the NPP’s new parliamentary candidate, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, engaging in separate activities within the constituency.

This has prompted calls from concerned party members for leadership intervention to prevent further escalation.

As a first-time candidate, Asante made history in 2020 by securing the parliamentary seat with a significant majority.

Bawumia running mate: Frema, Adutwum out of league; good news for NAPO?

Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has chosen his running mate for the 2024 general election.

The selected candidate’s name will be submitted to the NPP National Council for approval before Bawumia makes an official announcement.

MyNewsGh.com citing deep-throat sources said in the next few days, “the NPP flagbearer will be submitting the name of the lucky nominee to the National Council of the party for deliberation.”

The report added: “While the name of the nominee is kept top-secret, the names of those not on the list are known.

“Contrary to earlier reports of the shortlist including influential church leader Apostle Opoku Onyinah, checks show he was not under consideration.”

MyNewsgh.com reported that prominent figures such as Chief of Staff Frema Opare and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who were rumored to be leading contenders for the position, have not been nominated as running mates for Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 general election.

After securing the NPP flagbearership, Bawumia requested additional time from the National Council to announce his running mate, emphasizing the importance of extensive consultations with key stakeholders.

With the exclusion of Onyinah, Frema, and Adutwum, analysts suggest that the path is now clear for Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, to be named as the running mate.

The Ashanti Region, a stronghold for the NPP, is considered crucial for winning the 2024 election.

Consequently, selecting a running mate from this region has gained significant traction since Bawumia’s election as flagbearer.

“The tolling system has to come back, and I think it will come back” – Bawumia

Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for a broadened road toll system to fund the development of the nation’s road infrastructure.

Ghana abolished road tolls in 2022 in a bid to ease traffic congestion on major roads, and the Vice President, who was touring the Volta Region, said a broadened reintroduction of the tolling regime would provide the needed revenue for infrastructure development.

Dr Bawumia was responding to citizen concerns over the bad nature of roads at a meeting with the clergy in the Volta Region at the beginning of his tour.

He said the Government lacked the funding to undertake infrastructure development and said innovative means such as road tolling would provide a way out.

Dr Bawumia added that the Government’s approach to road funding should be reconsidered and that the private sector could augment revenue from road tolls in providing the needed relief.

“Let us go back to a system of broad-based road tolls. The tolling system has to come back, and I think it will come back.

“It is a fundamental mistake of the Government to place all road projects on the budget. The government doesn’t have enough money and the private sector has to be brought in.”

Dr. Bawumia underscored the potential for the private sector to contribute to infrastructure development through lease payment options, drawing parallels with their role in advancing the nation’s digital agenda.

Expanding on his presidential vision, he outlined plans to boost agriculture, ensure energy sufficiency, and reform the tax system.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of formally recognizing the church’s contribution to national development and pledged support in this regard.

Rev. Seth Mawutor, Chairman of the Christian Council in the Volta Region, highlighted the need to preserve national peace during the election period, affirming the Council’s commitment to providing necessary assistance.

Accompanied by NPP leadership, including National Chairman Stephen Ntim and Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Dr. Bawumia engaged with various stakeholders, including the Muslim community and the Volta Region House of Chiefs.

He also planned to host a forum for youth at Ho Technical University before heading to the Oti Region on Friday.

  • NPP doesn’t know what is coming– Edudzi on Ato Forson’s ambulance trial

NPP doesn’t know what is coming– Edudzi on Ato Forson’s ambulance trial

Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has cautioned the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to brace themselves for the escalating controversy surrounding the trial of Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

Dr. Forson faces allegations of causing financial loss to the state in the procurement of 200 ambulances.

In an interview on Neat FM on May 31, 2024, Edudzi asserted that the NDC possesses evidence indicating that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, led by Attorney General Godfred Dame, is exerting efforts to imprison Dr. Ato Forson unjustly.

He highlighted an audio recording of a phone conversation between Godfred Dame and the third defendant in Dr. Ato Forson’s trial, Richard Jakpa, where the AG is heard pressuring Jakpa to testify against the Minority Leader. Additionally, Edudzi referenced WhatsApp messages between the two individuals, released by the NDC, as further evidence of wrongdoing.

“If you can recall, when this issue started, my brother Nana B ignorantly stated that the recording was done at the home of a Supreme Court judge. On Tuesday, the recording that was released, was it in a house? Wasn’t it a phone call?

“So, quite clearly, our brothers and sisters in the NPP do not know what is coming. They have no idea,” he said in Twi.

The NDC legal director urged NPP members who are making noise about the trial to take a clue from the Attorney General who has gone quiet since the revelations started.

He made these remarks while reacting to a petition by Dr. Ato Forson to the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, for the remaining proceedings of the trial to be broadcast live.

About the allegations against Godfred Dame:

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), as promised, presented evidence implicating Attorney General and Minister of Justice Godfred Dame in the ongoing trial of Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

The NDC accused Godfred Dame of engaging in unethical and unprofessional behavior, alleging that businessman Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance procurement trial, claimed in court that the AG had meetings with him to discuss implicating Ato Forson.

Jakpa alleged that the Attorney General sought his cooperation to incriminate Dr. Ato Forson, a claim Dame vehemently denied.

During a press conference in Accra on May 28, 2024, the NDC played a 16-minute audio recording of a phone conversation between Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa, recorded on the day Jakpa was scheduled to testify in court.

In the recording, Dame is heard urging Jakpa to testify in a manner inconsistent with the explanation Jakpa provided to him. Prior to the AG’s request, Jakpa had asserted that Ato Forson had committed no wrongdoing with the LCs he signed, and he explained that the contract was for the purchase of 200 vehicles with 4 LCs.

“With the security from the government being the LC, the condition precedent… the contract for 200 vehicles in tranches of 50, 50, 50, 50. The contract is one contract for 200 ambulances which has been broken down within the contract.

“You establish an LC for every 50 tranche. So, you have four LCs for the 200 ambulances,” Jakpa explained.

Godfred Dame then stated that the third accused should accept his explanation because it wouldn’t cause him any harm.

“For that part, I disagree with you because if you look at the terms of the contract, it is quite clear, and it should not be difficult for you to accept because it doesn’t put you in any problem. You are not the Minister of Health, and you are not the Minister of Finance, so it doesn’t put you in any difficulty,” the Attorney General is heard saying.

However, Jakpa insisted that he could not grant Dame’s request because there were letters that confirmed the arrangement in the contract.

“No, the problem I have in accepting that for you is that there are letters that confirm [details of the transaction]. So I can’t go against what the letters say,” he said.

In the recording, Dame persistently urged Jakpa to adopt his stance, assuring him that it wouldn’t pose any issues. However, Jakpa remained resolute, refusing to testify contrary to the truth he knew.

Furthermore, the Attorney General can be heard advising Jakpa to concoct a medical excuse to facilitate his travel.

  • Ghana’s power sector will receive 2,000 megawatts of solar energy if I become president – Bawumia

Ghana’s power sector will receive 2,000 megawatts of solar energy if I become president – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has committed to adding 2,000 megawatts of solar power to Ghana’s energy mix during his presidency.

Dr. Bawumia believes that the rising cost of electricity makes businesses uncompetitive, highlighting the necessity for the country to harness solar power.

He attributed the increasing cost of electricity to exchange rates and the international price of petroleum.

The NPP leader made this pledge during a meeting with clergy in the Volta Region, as part of his regional campaign tour.

According to Dr. Bawumia, Ghana’s reliance on crude oil prices and foreign exchange fluctuations for energy generation escalates the cost of living and impacts business competitiveness.

“To reduce the cost of living is to look at our power generation. Ghana currently relies a lot on oil and gas to generate power and if you look at their [oil and gas] costs, they are quite high so anytime the prices move up in the Middle East, fuel, electricity, and transport prices also move up and so I want us to move away from oil and gas to solar power. It is the key for us in the generation of electricity.

“My goal and the goal that I have stated is that in the next four years, Ghana should add 2,000 megawatts of solar power to the generation of power and that is more than half of our consumption of electricity and so combine that with Akosombo and you would nearly reduce the cost of power by nearly 50 percent and that will give our businesses a competitive advantage.”

Dr. Bawumia emphasized his vision to aggressively expand solar power over the next four years to alleviate the burden of high fuel costs on Ghanaians and businesses.

According to the International Energy Agency, in 2021, Ghana’s electricity mix was heavily dependent on natural gas (62.6%) and hydropower (34.1%), with solar power accounting for less than one percent.

  • Weakening of cedi is a ritual problem, you can’t blame NPP gov’t – Deputy Finance Minister

Weakening of cedi is a ritual problem, you can’t blame NPP gov’t – Deputy Finance Minister

Deputy Minister for Finance, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has described the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi as a chronic issue stemming from the country’s import-driven economy.

In a media address on Wednesday, he emphasized that the high demand for the dollar, driven by imports, perpetuates the cedi’s depreciation.

He asserted that this issue demands national attention and extends beyond the capabilities of any single government to resolve.

Dr. Amoah assured that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, if elected, plans to develop a long-term strategy to address the depreciation of the cedi.

“Cedi depreciation is a ritual problem, I agree with you. It’s not because of one particular government…It’s an issue that has nationalistic or that needs nationalistic attention,” Dr Amoah said.

The Deputy Finance Minister added “so far as we keep on being an importer-driven economy, we’ll be having problems with the cedi because we import almost everything. But Inshallah, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, next year if he comes, we’re going to design a long-term framework to deal with the cedi.”

Over the past month, the Ghanaian cedi has weakened further against the US dollar and other major foreign currencies.

Meanwhile, on May 24, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam assured that the Ministry of Finance is collaborating with the Bank of Ghana to implement measures to address the depreciation of the cedi.

These measures include expediting the fiscal consolidation process by rationalizing spending and enhancing revenue mobilization, intensifying the gold-for-oil program, and appropriate foreign exchange interventions by the Bank of Ghana, among other strategies.

Additionally, on Monday, May 27, in response to regulatory concerns, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) established a task force dedicated to overseeing all foreign exchange bureaus and enforcing compliance with regulatory standards.

The primary objective of this task force is to address the activities of illegal operators within the foreign exchange market and promote enhanced market transparency.

By closely monitoring the operations of these bureaus, the BoG aims to mitigate unauthorized practices and foster a more regulated and transparent environment within the foreign exchange sector.
