“I am going to China” – NPP General Secretary reveals Chairman Wontumi’s first response to Manhyia summons

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, also known as JFK, has revealed what the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, told him when he informed him about his summon to the Manhyia Palace, by the Kumasi traditional Council.

JFK, who appeared before the chiefs and elders of the Ashanti Kingdom on Monday, January 22nd 2023, said that he received a notice from Baffour Kantankrankyi, the chief of staff of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to present Chairman Wontumi before the Kumasi Traditional Council.

The summon was in relation to some alleged derogatory remarks that Chairman Wontumi made against the Asantehene during the vetting of parliamentary aspirants in Manhyia South.

“I got a notice a short while ago that Baffour Kantankrankyi said I should call him. Truthfully, I called him. When I did, he told me to present ‘my child’, the regional chairman, before the chiefs of Ashanti kingdom,” JFK said.

However, when he called Chairman Wontumi to relay the message, he said that he was on his way to China and that he would show up when he returned.

“I immediately called chairman to relay the message, and he told me he was on his way to China and that when he returns he will show up,” JFK said.

JFK said that he then travelled from Accra to Kumasi to plead with the chiefs on behalf of Chairman Wontumi, out of respect for the Asantehene and the Asanteman chiefs.

“I was then in Accra, but because of the respect my party and I have for our Lord (Otumfuor) and the Asanteman chiefs, I came from Accra to Kumasi, and visited the chiefs, Nana Samaahene, Nana Ankobea and I sat with them and told them that I had already mentioned on phone that Chairman had travelled, but I also had to come and plead with them,” JFK said.

JFK’s revelation has confirmed the reports that Chairman Wontumi snubbed the summon from the Manhyia Palace, which has angered the chiefs and the youth of the Ashanti Kingdom.

Some of the chiefs asserted that Chairman Wontumi must appear before the Council, even if he would come in a wheelchair.

The youth of the Kingdom have also threatened to exile Chairman Wontumi from the Ashanti land if he does not apologise to the Asantehene and the chiefs.

The Kumasi Traditional Council has also reportedly summoned Chairman Wontumi, lawyer Maurice Ampaw, and the management of Wontumi Radio and TV over the comments made by the latter against the chiefs during a programme on the station.

The party’s spokesperson is not Maurice Ampaw; we can’t disrespect you – NPP tells Otumfuo

The Chief Scribe of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has made it clear that Ghanaian lawyer, Maurice Ampaw has not been appointed as a spokesperson for the party.

Consequently, the NPP has distanced itself from the remarks made by the lawyer during his program on Wontumi TV over the weekend.

Frimpong stated, “The party does not recognize Maurice Ampaw.” This implies that Maurice and the management of Wontumi TV are solely responsible for addressing their broadcast, which has been deemed disrespectful to traditional authorities.

These remarks followed a summon issued to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, by the Kumasi Traditional Council over an alleged distasteful comment directed at Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, which has angered Asanteman.

Before Antwi Boasiako could honor the summon on January 22, Maurice reportedly took to the TV station and denigrated the traditional rulers over the summon.

The Akwamu Division of the Council expressed dismay when the NPP appeared before the Council without Antwi Boasiako, stating, “Someone by the name Maurice Ampau has disrespected us on Wontumi’s TV station over the summon we issued to him today. He used unprintable words on us.”

Kyeame Kwaku Wusu, a representative of the Council, warned the NPP against allowing anyone to disrespect what they had built over the years.

In issuing a final timeline for Antwi Boasiako to appear before it on Monday, January 29, the Council also demanded the appearance of Maurice Ampaw and the management of Wontumi TV.

The NPP assured that they would compel the Regional Chairman to appear before the Council, emphasizing that further excuses would not be tolerated.

Mr Frimpong stated, “We will dissociate ourselves from any other excuse he gives this time around,” after earlier conveying that Wontumi was sick and receiving treatment in a hospital, making him unable to appear before the Council.

I will not choose NPP over Asanteman no matter the situation – Justin Kodua Frimpong

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has declared his unwavering allegiance to Asanteman, emphasizing that he would not exchange it for anything under any circumstances.

He expressed a firm commitment to defend and safeguard the Golden Stool and its occupant, rejecting any attempts by fellow party members to tarnish the dignity of chieftaincy and the traditional authority of Asanteman.

Affirming his loyalty, he stated, “I will choose Asante over NPP at any time.”

Mr Frimpong made these remarks during his appearance before the Kumasi Traditional Council on January 22, 2024, addressing alleged disrespect by the Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

Accompanied by the National Organiser of the party, Henry Nana Boakye, Deputy National Communication Director Owusu Bempah, and regional and constituency executives, the NPP leadership intended to present Chairman Wontumi before the Council.

However, they cited his hospitalization for medical attention as the reason for his absence.

Consequently, the party was instructed to bring Chairman Wontumi before the Council on Monday, January 29, 2024, along with the management of Wontumi TV and a program host from the media house, Maurice Ampaw.

Justin Kodua Frimpong hinted at their strategy, stating, “We will tell him to come here next Monday, and we (NPP) will dissociate ourselves from any other excuse he will offer.”

Ashanti region has been sidelined by Akufo-Addo – NDC

The Ashanti regional branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) strongly condemns the government, accusing it of neglecting and sidelining the Ashanti region in terms of development.

Specifically pointing fingers at President Akufo-Addo, the party claims a deliberate lack of attention and resources directed towards the region’s growth.

During a press conference in Kumasi, Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Region Secretary of the NDC, expressed concern that the government seems to be intentionally depriving the Ashanti region of developmental projects, contrasting it with other regions experiencing consistent infrastructural advancements.

Amoakohene urged the electorate to consider voting out the NPP in the upcoming 2024 polls, citing their dissatisfaction with the perceived neglect.

He emphasized the need for the government to expedite the completion of all stalled projects in the region.

“We believe that the Ashanti region has been sidelined, so far as development is concerned. And it’s even reflected in his appointments, ministers, Chief Executives and others.

“We believe that this current NPP set-up has nothing to offer the Ashanti region,” the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC said.

Kumasi Traditional Council directs NPP leadership to produce Chairman Wontumi by next week

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Bo has been directed to make a mandatory appearance before the Kumasi Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace on Monday, January 29, 2024.

This directive stems from the purported derogatory comments attributed to Chairman Wontumi against the Asantehene approximately two weeks ago.

Chairman Wontumi is anticipated to present himself alongside Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, both facing allegations of making comparable derogatory remarks on radio.

The Kumasi Traditional Council has summoned the management of the radio station where the controversial comments were made.

Chairman Wontumi was initially expected to make an appearance today, January 22, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace, however, he failed to for health reasons.

On his behalf, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua and Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye led a party delegation to the Manhyia Palace.

The Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia (VI), in the absence of the Asantehene, sat in state.

All factions of the Kumasi Traditional Council were represented at the Palace.

Speaking on behalf of Wontumi, the NPP General Secretary pleaded that the accused had taken ill and requested two weeks for his recovery.

As tradition demands, it was thrown to the faction leaders of the traditional council to have their take on the matter.

All leaders who spoke furiously disagreed with the request for the two weeks since Wontumi had failed to present a medical report to validate his absence.

They further drew in lawyer Maurice Ampaw for alleged derogatory statements in support of Chairman Wontumi’s statement.

In passing final comments, the Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwaatia ordered that the Ashanti Regional NPP Chair appear before the traditional council next Monday.

He also ordered Maurice Ampaw and the Management of Wontumi Radio to be present on the same day.

In a concluding statement, the NPP General Secretary thanked the traditional authority and reiterated his reverence for the Golden Stool.

He dissociated the party from the invitation thrown to Maurice Ampaw.

The merits of the substantive issue are yet to be heard.

Members of the Bimbilla constituency in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have formally given their endorsement to Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister of Defence, as their parliamentary candidate.

Nitiwul emerged as the exclusive contender for the parliamentary election after the disqualification of another candidate, Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Zaruk, by the NPP’s National Executive Committee.

In his acceptance speech, Dominic Nitiwul expressed confidence in securing the seat once again. He urged constituency executives, former MPs, former Ministers, and party members to unite in striving for the party’s goal of securing over 50,000 votes.

“We have 86,000 registered voters. In the last elections, I got 40,023 votes, but it means nothing because every voter will decide who to vote for on December 7. All of us have to work like we have never worked before to get every vote.”

Whether you are a chairman, secretary, youth organiser, women organiser, or hold any position in this party, including former MCEs, former MPs, former Ministers, or former DCEs, we must put our working gears on to ensure that we deliver the over 50,000 votes the party is looking for.”

The disqualified aspirant, Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Zaruk, called for calm among party members following his disqualification.

Despite expressing discontent with the decision, Zaruk urged his supporters to respect the verdict of the National Executive Council.

Addressing NPP supporters in Bimbila, Zaruk stated, “I urge my people to be patient with the decision of the National Executive Council. The disqualification has been bitter for all of us, but we must be patient. Additionally, I appeal for patience in all party matters.”

Furthermore, Zaruk alleged that the incumbent NPP MP, also the Defence Minister, and his associates orchestrated his disqualification, raising concerns about the motives behind the decision.

General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, cautioned that aspirants engaging in such practices would face sanctions. The warning was issued as part of guidelines announced ahead of the parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27.

Elections in the Nhyiaeso Constituency will proceed following the discontinuation of a court case against the party by a polling station executive from the constituency.

“The party has formulated these rules and regulations to ensure free and fair elections and we believe that everyone should be allowed to feel free to walk to the polling centre to cast their votes. It is of this belief that we have made the statement that no one should camp delegates at any place.

“Those who take pictures of their votes, aside from nullifying your votes, it is an offence and you would be handed over to the Police.”

Siedu Mba, a once notorious hooligan and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed a desire to confess his wrongdoings against the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama.

Appearing on Abusua 96.5 FM’s afternoon political talk show, hosted by Ebenezer Yaw Jona, popularly known as Osempakani, Siedu Mba, now claiming repentance after being discharged by the court of any involvement in the Canadian girls’ kidnapping, revealed his intention to apologize directly to former President Mahama.

He stated, “I have sinned against the NDC and the former President John Mahama. I was used by the NPP to commit a lot of political sins against his party and government.”

Mr Mba who was previously arrested for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of two Canadian females in Kumasi, emphasized that he would not disclose the details of his actions against Mahama on the radio but pledged to kneel down and personally apologize when given the opportunity.

He shared his disappointment with the NPP, stating that they disowned him when he faced legal troubles.

The self-proclaimed former NPP loyalist accused prominent figures such as Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, President Nana Akufo Addo, Lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi, Hon. Opare Ansah, and others of abandoning him when he faced legal challenges.

Warning the youth about the ruling party, Siedu Mba cautioned that the NPP is quick to “use and dump people,” urging caution when dealing with them.

In an accusatory tone, Siedu Mba claimed that the National Security team, responsible for his arrest, stole his belongings, including a Range Rover vehicle, undisclosed amounts of money in foreign and local currencies, watches, and jewelry. He demanded the return of his allegedly stolen items.

Regarding Ashanti Regional Chairman Wontumi, Siedu Mba expressed anger over alleged disparaging comments against Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti King.

He threatened physical action against Wontumi, accusing him of disrespecting Otumfuo and creating chaos during solemn events. Siedu Mba asserted his intent to teach Wontumi a lesson and put him in his place for challenging Otumfuo in his kingdom.

He explained “ Every person in Kumasi, particularly within the Zongo Communities knows my commitment to the NPP. NPP chairman’s murder trial: Afoko denies charges for the third time

For the third time in eight years, Gregory Afoko, the farmer accused of murdering former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Adams Mahama, has pleaded not guilty to conspiring with convict Asabke Alangdi in the killing of the NPP Upper East Regional Chairman.

Mr Alangdi, already convicted for conspiracy, also pleaded not guilty to murder.

The trial is set to proceed with four women and three men serving as jurors.

The case has been adjourned to February 2 for case management conference.

In April of the current year, a court, led by Justice Merley Afua Wood, found Asabke Alangdi guilty of conspiring with Gregory Afoko to kill Mahama in 2015.

However, Afoko was acquitted of conspiracy to commit murder and murder charges by a 4-3 verdict.

Mr Alangdi was sentenced to death and has since appealed the decision.

The case’s brief facts reveal that on May 14, 2015, Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong, then NPP National Chairman and General Secretary, were violently attacked by thugs organized by the deceased Mahama.

This was in response to their campaigning against Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Gregory and Asabke, upset by the incident, formed a youth group to protect those perceived as against Akufo-Addo. On May 20, 2015, they ambushed Mahama’s residence with a suspected acid substance, resulting in his death during transportation to Accra for treatment.

The post-mortem report cited shocked lungs and extensive acid burns as the cause of death.

“I have worked so hard in this constituency, have been able to sink and make 130 bore-holes, and have been able to construct 11 chips compound.”

  • Stop National Cathedral project to conserve Ghana’s finances – Akufo-Addo

Stop National Cathedral project to conserve Ghana’s finances – Akufo-Addo

Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, insists that President Akufo-Addo should terminate the National Cathedral project to conserve the nation’s finances.

He believes that discontinuing the project would demonstrate the government’s acknowledgment of the necessity to halt unfeasible initiatives.

Dr Spio-Garbrah expressed this opinion during an upcoming interview with TV3’s Keminni Amanor when questioned about the government’s target to achieve single-digit inflation by the end of the year.

He emphasized that canceling the National Cathedral project openly would indicate the government’s commitment to a practical approach, canceling projects deemed implausible under the current administration.

“If the president tells us that before he leaves office, he will never fly again in 18,000 dollar an hour plane, he hasn’t made that commitment, he should make it.

“Have you heard that the National Cathedral project has been canceled? If you hear that the National Cathedral project has been canceled then it means that the government is getting into a sensible environment and canceling projects that they know will never happen this year under this government. So cancel it openly and let us know it is canceled.”

“The 24-hour economy I proposed is for jobs and more jobs,” the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stressed.

“Over 54 per of Ghanaians believe that the 24-hour economy is the highest or the most remembered slogan or policy initiative of all the policy initiatives any political party is talking about today.”

When asked about the Finance Ministry’s projection of the country ending the year with single-digit inflation, Dr Spio-Garbrah urged President Akufo-Addo to make clear commitments, drawing a parallel with the hypothetical cancellation of the expensive National Cathedral project.

Regarding former President John Dramani Mahama’s ’24-hour Economy’ proposal, Dr Spio-Garbrah supported the idea, stating that 54 percent of Ghanaians consider it the most memorable policy slogan among political parties.

He believes that implementing the 24-hour economy concept would stimulate the local economy and generate employment opportunities.

Mahama introduced the ’24hr Economy‘ project during discussions with the Trades Union Congress in November 2023, emphasizing its potential to create jobs for all Ghanaians. Dr Spio-Garbrah asserted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) needs to promote this idea more effectively, as a significant portion of the population already views it as a standout policy initiative.

  • Only NPP or NDC can produce a female President or Vice – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Only NPP or NDC can produce a female President or Vice – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula-Owusu Ekuful, is of the assertion that the dream of Ghana being led by a female president can only be accomplished by the two major political parties: the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an interview on UTV’s Mpu Ne Mpu show, the Ablekuma West MP noted that the country is already nearing the stage where its citizens will be willing to cast their ballot for a woman to lead the nation.

She however noted that this can only be done if the two major political parties avail themselves. She explained that this is due to the duopoly in the political landscape and the failure of smaller political parties to garner a significant number of votes during elections.

“There will come a time when Ghana gets a female President. There will come a time. We are getting there. I said this when Paa Kwesi Nduom was contesting. We went to an event and I represented NPP and we were discussing the progress of women in politics. I said that there must come a time when the two largest political parties provide us females as their running mates to help us reach the dream of a woman being president.

“If you are in these up and coming political parties, your chances of winning the elections are slim but if it is not NPP, then it is NDC. That’s what our politics is looking like. So if NPP or NDC brings a female running mate and win the election, then we get a female Vice President.

“So let us think about it. It’s been over a decade since I said that,” she said.

Ghana has had numerous opportunities to have a female President or Vice President, however, these individuals, such as Akua Donkor,  founder and leader of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and Brigitte Dzogbenuku of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), who belong to the ‘minor’ political parties have been denied by electorates.

It appeared that the country was ready when former President John Dramani Mahama presented former Education Minister Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as his running mate during the 2020 general elections, but the NDC lost the elections to the NPP.

Currently, the flagbearers of the two major political parties, John Mahama of the NDC and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP are yet to announce who their running mates will be.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is said to be part of a list purportedly unveiling a roster of individuals eyeing the NPP’s running mate slot.

The unverified compilation consists of names like Chief of Staff, Frema Opare; Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta; Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu; Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, among others.

But Ursula-Owusu Ekuful, says she has had no conversations with Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia about being his running mate for the 2024 general elections.

According to Mrs Ursula-Ekuful, she has had several conversations with the Vice President, however, they have all focused on Ghana’s digital drives and the measures to be taken to make the lives of Ghanaians better.

“I have had numerous discussions with Dr Bawumia, but we have not talked about the running mate position. We have work to do. I’d want us to leave him to select his own running mate. He should take his time to find someone he wants. We have been talking about what we need to do this year to help citizens and our chances as a party,” she said.

We should allow Bawumia select a running mate at his own pace and time – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula-Owusu Ekuful, has entreated bigwigs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to give its flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia enough time to pick his running mate.

Shortly after Dr Bawumia was elected flagbearer of the NPP in November 2023, a list purportedly unveiling a roster of individuals eyeing the Vice President slot emerged on social media.

The unverified compilation consisted of names like Chief of Staff, Frema Opare; Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako Atta; Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu; Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, among others.

It has been over two months, and Dr Bawumia is yet to announce his running mate ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Mrs. Ursula-Ekuful revealed that she has engaged in several discussions with Vice President Bawumia, but none of these conversations revolved around the running mate position.

She strongly advocates for allowing Dr Bawumia the autonomy to prepare and choose an individual he deems most fitting for the role.

“I have had numerous discussions with Dr Bawumia, but we have not talked about the running mate position. We have work to do. I’d want us to leave him to select his own running mate. He should take his time to find someone he wants. We have been talking about what we need to do this year to help citizens and our chances as a party,” she said on UTV’s Mpu Ne Mpu show.

Some individuals have advised the Vice President to select an individual who hails from the Ashanti Region as his running mate to solidify his votes in their stronghold.

Really! – ‘Shocked’ Ursula reacts to being included in list of running mates for Bawumia

Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula-Owusu Ekuful, has expressed shock over her name being part of the individuals reportedly being considered to become running mate of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

When asked by the host of Mpu ne Mpu on UTV whether she was aware that her name was captured in the list of running mates for the Vice President, she replied “saa” to wit “really.”.

According to Mrs Ursula-Ekuful, she has had several conversations with the Vice President but none have centred on the running mate position.

She is of the assertion that Dr Bawumia be left alone to prepare and select an individual he believes will be best suited for the role.

“I have had numerous discussions with Dr Bawumia, but we have not talked about the running mate position. We have work to do. I’d want us to leave him to select his own running mate. Call Kennedy Agyapong to order for his recent attacks – Prof Mike Oquaye tells NPP

Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, former Speaker of Parliament and member of the New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) Council of Elders, has called on the party’s leadership to urgently intervene and address the recent attacks by outgoing Member of Parliament (MP) Kennedy Agyapong.

Mr Agyapong accused Works and Housing Minister Francis Asenso Boakye of colluding with the judicial services to sell state lands to private developers, urging delegates to reject Asenso-Boakye in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Professor Mike Oquaye emphasized the need for party leaders and elders to address the situation in the interest of party unity.

“Kennedy Agyapong made a public statement that the elections were free and fair. In the interest of the party, I will think that the elders, of which I am one, and the national executive must put it on their agenda to ensure that everybody is put in a certain order,” the former speaker of the legislature stated.

“The facts are that the current developments taking place at the official residence of the late Justice Marful-Sau form part of the Government Redevelopment Programme (GRP),” the statement emphasised.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Works and Housing denied the allegations in a press release, stating that no such sale had occurred and clarifying the ongoing Government Redevelopment Programme (GRP).

As Mr Agyapong continues his attacks within the party, there are calls for party flagbearer Dr. Bawumia to intervene.

Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere suggested that direct confrontation with Agyapong might not benefit the party, and Bawumia’s intervention could incur Mr Agyapong’s displeasure.

The NPP delegates are set to elect parliamentary candidates on Saturday, January 27, 2024, in constituencies where the party currently holds parliamentary seats.

My grandfather has over 100 children and many are in public service – Gabby justifies “Friends and family” govt

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a close associate of President Nana Akufo-Addo, Gabby Otchere-Darko, has offered a unique perspective on the much-debated issue of “friends and family” in government appointments.

Otchere-Darko defended the Akufo-Addo-led administration, citing his grandfather’s extensive family network while shedding light on the family’s significant presence in public service.

Gabby Otchere-Darko acknowledged that his grandfather has a remarkable legacy, having fathered over 100 children, many of whom have found themselves in various roles within the public service.

Additionally, he said his grandpa made sure to educate all his children, hence, their heavy presence in the public sector.

“My grandfather had over 100 children and we have his diaries. In his diaries, he made sure he educated all his children…and most of us [members of his family] have dedicated our lives to public service,” he said.

While some critics argue that this situation perpetuates a system of nepotism and cronyism, Otchere-Darko emphasized the importance of recognizing the talents and capabilities of individuals within the family.

He argued that the sheer size of his grandfather’s family naturally leads to a broader representation in different sectors, including public service.

Otchere-Darko maintained that family connections should not automatically be viewed as a negative influence on governance, highlighting that competence and expertise should be the primary considerations in appointments.

“Let me take my family, for instance. My own grandfather was a member of the legislative council, one of the first Africans in the council. I am talking about the history of the public service, my uncles and grandfather, including J.B. Danquah, Paa Willy, and all of them, they ended up being called the Big Six not because they contributed to independence, but because they were the front liners. Three of my family members are part of the six,” he added.

  • I am not a politician, Akufo-Addo never offered me a position – Gabby Otchere-Darko

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has emphatically stated that he is not a politician and has never been offered any position by President Akufo-Addo.

In an exclusive interview on Starr FM, the prominent lawyer delved into his personal convictions, clarifying his stance on political positions and shedding light on his relationship with the NPP.

“A lot of people describe me as a politician, but I am not. I have never been a politician; I have been a journalist, a public figure. I believe in a political party ideology and I push it”.

“I go for what I believe in and I do what I believe in, and it may not mean that I am not sensitive to what others think. But once I convince myself that there’s merit in what I want to do or I am doing, I will try to accommodate.

“Akufo-Addo wasn’t generous enough to offer me a position; he knows my stand on that. I was never offered a position,” he explained.

The seasoned lawyer expressed that popularity is often pursued by those seeking competitive political office positions. However, for individuals like himself, convictions and the desire to effect change matter more than popularity.

Clarifying his relationship with the ruling NPP, Otchere-Darko emphasized his support for the party’s ideology, cerebral aspects of politics, and overall strategy.

As the cousin of President Akufo-Addo, Otchere Darko has been subject to speculation, with many perceiving him as a powerful figure who can influence government decisions.

However, he refuted these claims, stating, ”I have influence but I don’t have any power. You’ve come to me a few times to get things done but couldn’t help you. A powerful person makes decisions, and who can make things happen. Someone with influence will try to persuade but at the end of the day, the responsibility is not with me., it is with the person who makes decisions. So that is the person with power.”

“I go for what I believe in and I do what I believe in and it may not mean that I am not sensitive to what others think but once I convince myself that there’s merit in what I want to do or I am doing I will try to accommodate. I think that popularity is for those who seek competitive office position but for the rest of us popularity is not what matters but the conviction and the things you want to do, and that it may not mean that on a scale of what you believe in would suite the wilms, the caprices, preference taste and the idiosyncrasies of many people but if you believe that there is merit in what you doing, I will say that don’t be sensitive to the concerns but don’t let that sway you by.

“ I have said this for a long time (I will not go for political positions) even when I was in school in competitions I will be more a campaign manager, even at university, I will be a campaign manager. I prefer to strategize rather than to be the one. I am not swayed by titles, I am swayed by getting the job.

Gabby Otchere-Darko explains why he’s referred to as “god”

A prominent corporate lawyer and influential figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has shared insights into the origins of his name “god”.

During a discussion on Starr Fm on Thursday, January 18 2023, he clarified that the title originated from his initials, G.O.D, during his school days when initials were commonly used for labeling personal belongings.

According to him, the transition from “G.O.D” to “dog” occurred due to the playful interpretation of students, who found it mischievous to be associated with the divine term.

Mr Otchere-Darko emphasized that the name is an innocent product of school camaraderie and does not bear any religious implications.

“G.O.D is just my initials, when you are going to school they put your initials on your trunks and stuff, including your underwear. So they wrote G.O.D, now the students thought it was a rascal to be associated with God so they changed it to a dog,” he stated.

As the cousin of President Akufo-Addo, Otchere Darko has been subject to speculation, with many perceiving him as a powerful figure who can influence government decisions.

A corporate lawyer and prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere Darko has explicitly stated that while he holds influence, the notion of wielding significant power attributed to him is inaccurate.

Contrary to the widely held public perception, Otchere Darko emphasized in an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Starr FM that he lacks authoritative power within the government.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) labeled him as the De Facto Prime Minister of Ghana in 2019, featuring him in their list of family, friends, and associates of President Akufo-Addo.

Despite this association, Otchere Darko clarified that claims of him exerting substantial power within government circles are unfounded and mere fabrications by political opponents.

Seventeen aspirants have been disqualified, 326 candidates qualified for the parliamentary primaries, three aspirants withdrew from the race, 29 individuals went unopposed, and one aspirant’s application is currently under court review.

The decision comes after a thorough review of the reports submitted by the National Parliamentary Appeals Committee (NPAC) and the National Parliamentary Vetting Committee (NPVC) regarding the eligibility of aspirants.

The disqualified aspirants are Portia Asante Danso (Afigya Sekyere East seat), Kwabena Addo Amankwah (Manhyia South seat), Arkoh Robert (Upper Denkyira East seat), Nathan Kobina Austin (Assin South seat), Joseph Afankwah (Agona West seat), Frank Aidoo (Akuapem South seat), Emmanuel Adjei Lartey (Okere seat), Dennis Obeng Agyei (Akim Oda seat), Ruth Yaa Ansaa Safori (New Juaben South seat).

NPP squashes KT Hammond’s petition seeking to disqualify opponents

A petition filed by the Trade and Industry Minister, Kobina Tahiru Hammond (KT Hammond), seeking to disqualify his opponents in the party’s Adansi Asokwa parliamentary primary, has again been dismissed by the National Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In the petition filed by the Trades Minister, Mr Hammond argued that they are not eligible to contest the poll based on Articles 12(4) and (7) of the NPP’s constitution.

He claimed that his opponents Samuel Dakwa Binfoh, Dr Enoch Acheampong, and Kwabena Nkansah Asamoah – are not card-bearing members of the party.

Additionally, he stated that the aforementioned persons have not done any work in the constituency to merit representing the constituents.

It is in view of these that Mr Hammond is challenging the qualification of his opponents in the upcoming primaries.

However, the petition has been squashed. This is the second time Mr Hammond is challenging the eligibility of his opponents.

On January 2, 2024, the Adansi Asokwa MP petitioned the Ashanti Regional Vetting Committee to disqualify his main opponent in the primary, Sammy Binfoh Darkwa but after hours of deliberation on the matter, the vetting committee threw out the petition and cleared both aspirants to begin their campaign for the primary.

Unsatisfied with the outcome, K.T. Hammond subsequently lodged a petition with the National Vetting Committee.

As it stands now, all candidates have been cleared to contest.

Mr. Kyerematen mentioned that Komla Dumor would have been his Vice-Presidential nominee in a previous Presidential Primary bid.

In a social media post commemorating the 10th anniversary of Mr. Dumor’s passing, the former Trade and Industry Minister emphasized their shared birthdate, describing them as “soul brothers.”

“We shared common perspectives on many issues across various topics. Although he was much younger than me, we communicated as peers due to his maturity and depth of reasoning,” he said.

Mr. Kyerematen highlighted that he and Mr. Dumor were engaged in stimulating discussions about journalism, public service, and private-sector involvement.

“Komla, you fought a good fight at home in Ghana and around the world. You have left deep footprints that will always remain etched in history. Rest peacefully in the bosom of the Good Lord,” the Movement for Change leader said.

Mr Kyerematen exited the NPP in 2023 due to challenges with electoral processes among others during the selection of the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.

Prior to his exit, Mr Kyerematen contested for the party’s flagbearership position in 2010 and 2016 but lost to President Akufo-Addo, then an aspirant.

Come and defend why you disrespected Otumfuo – Ashanti youth order Wontumi

The Ashanti youth has called for the immediate presence of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Wontumi, at the Manhyia palace.

This demand arises in response to alleged  disrespectful comments made by Wontumi towards the revered Ashanti king, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Voicing their dissatisfaction, the youth group sent a resolute message to Wontumi, challenging his statements and insisting that he attend a palace to respond to the allegations leveled at him.

Addressing the press, the leader of the group stated, “Are you okay, Wontumi? Why would you speak against Otumfuo and the people of the Ashanti kingdom? You are not a man, Wontumi. You, little one, have the audacity to speak against our king. We need you in the palace, and be prepared for any consequences if you fail to comply.”The group also accused Wontumi of employing divisive political tactics that could potentially undermine national unity.

The situation remains tense as the plea for accountability and dialogue continues to gain traction within the Ashanti community.

Wontumi, a significant political figure in the region, is yet to respond to the specific accusations made by the youth group.

Reports suggest that following the vetting of the Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, confusion arose between the Manhyia South Constituency Organizer and Chairman Wontumi.

This purported disagreement stemmed from Wontumi’s alleged reluctance to provide testimony about the contributions made by the Manhyia South Member of Parliament to the party’s internal activities.

During an approximately 30-minute period of intense confusion, which led to a temporary suspension of the vetting, the outspoken NPP Chairman reportedly conveyed to Otumfuo’s Brempon, Nana Kwaku Duah, the Chief of Kokoso, that he, Wontumi, had established his kingdom in the Ashanti Region.

Furthermore, it is claimed that Chairman Wontumi made a public statement expressing his readiness to challenge Otumfuo on any disagreement with the Asante King.According to Nana Kwaku Dua,  Wontumi stated that ”I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)”.

Sitting MPs must be retained for the growth of regions – NPP’s Western Regional Secretary

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Western Regional Secretary, Okatakyie Amankwa Afrifa, has advocated for a revision of the constitutional clause requiring the President to appoint 50% of Ministers from the Legislature.

He believes amending this clause will deter individuals from using Parliament merely as a path to secure ministerial appointments, thus preserving the integrity of the legislative body and preventing a brain drain.

Mr Afrifa expressed concerns that the current constitutional provision, while constitutional, hinders the development of career parliamentarians and compromises the independence of the legislature.

He emphasized the need for individuals to progress through the ranks within Parliament, rather than using it as a shortcut to ministerial roles.

Highlighting the imminent retirement of experienced MPs, including Mr Joe Ghartey, from the Western Region, Mr Afrifa urged the retention of current MPs to allow for a smooth transition and the gradual elevation of new leaders.

He emphasized the importance of creating a visible presence for the Western Region in national politics.

Mr Afrifa stressed the importance of fostering career politicians by retaining MPs, asserting that dedicated party members at all levels should be the ones considered for ministerial roles.

He discouraged the “let us pass Parliament to become a minister” approach and called for a focus on rewarding those committed to the party’s cause.

In anticipation of the 2024 elections, Mr Afrifa expressed confidence that the NPP would make history by breaking the eight-year term for the Presidency.

He urged delegates in the upcoming elections to promote peace in their campaigns and comport themselves responsibly, emphasizing the significance of making informed and thoughtful choices.

We need you in the palace, and be prepared for any consequences if you fail to comply.”The group also accused Wontumi of employing divisive political tactics that could potentially undermine national unity.

The situation remains tense as the plea for accountability and dialogue continues to gain traction within the Ashanti community. Wontumi, a significant political figure in the region, has yet to respond to the specific accusations made by the youth group.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has temporarily suspended its parliamentary primaries in the Nhyiaeso Constituency following the filing of an interlocutory injunction by one of the aspirants.

This move comes in response to a legal challenge, resulting in the postponement of the elections.

During a National Executive Committee meeting held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, the party took further actions.

A contestant in the Bimbilla constituency was disqualified, leading to Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, running unopposed.

In another development, Lydia Seyram Alhassan is poised to run unopposed in Ayawaso West-Wuogon following the rejection of an appeal by the party’s former constituency youth organizer, Owusu Amankwah.

As the NPP prepares for its parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27, about thirty other aspirants are anticipated to go unopposed in constituencies where the party already holds representation.

2024 polls: Alan will beat ‘clueless’ Bawumia —Solomon Owusu

Member of the communication team for the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has predicted a humiliating defeat for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

He believes that a former New Patriotic Party member and minister who is currently running as an independent candidate, Alan Kyeremanteng would beat Bawumia.

Despite enjoying the backing of state machinery during the NPP primaries to lead the ruling party, Owusu predicts Bawumia will lose in the main polls due to Ghanaians’ dissatisfaction with the NPP’s policies.

Speaking on the Gumbe Show on TV XYZ, Owusu, a former NPP member, characterised Bawumia as a man lacking ideas and having nothing substantial to offer the Ghanaian people.

“Bawumia is not part of the 2024 contest; Alan will beat him because he cannot divert the verdict of Ghanaians. He will lose sorely because of his poor track record,” he told host Oheneba Boamah Bennie.

According to Solomon Owusu, the impact of Bawumia’s leadership on the country’s economy was evident for everyone to feel during his tenure as the head of the government’s Economic Management Team.

He asserted that Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, the leader of the Movement for Change, possessed greater credibility than Dr. Bawumia.

Owusu added that any member of the NPP who is aware of the mismanagement and rampant corruption within the party under the leadership of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia might choose to distance themselves during the elections.

“In this 21st century when people are going to space and doing marvellous things that are benefiting their countries, Dr Bawumia could only talk about toilet facilities for Ghanaians. When he went to Agbogbloshi, all he could promise was toilet, toilet,” Owusu said mockingly.

He said after Bawumia’s defeat in 2024, he will have no option but to return to Canada to go teach, as he was doing before he was appointed to the Bank of Ghana.

VIDEO: Leave! Don’t step foot in Ashanti region again! – NPP youth ‘warn’ Chairman Wontumi

In response to alleged disrespectful remarks made by Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as ‘Wontumi,’ the Ashanti Youth group and traders, have enforced a ban on the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The ban, disclosed during a press conference in Kumasi on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, stems from accusations that Chairman Wontumi claimed to have “built his own kingdom with military and police force in the Asante Kingdom.”

”Expressing their discontent, the youth not only barred Chairman Wontumi from the Ashanti Region but also forbade his entry into the Manhyia Palace and any other palaces within the region.

The decision was prompted by what the youth labeled an “uncalled-for” outburst and a “display of disrespect for the golden stool” by the Ashanti Regional chairman.A spokesperson for the agitated youth, Mr. Eugene Oppong, who addressed the press, insisted on a public apology from Chairman Wontumi before considering his reintegration into Asanteman.

Mr. Oppong emphasized that Chairman Wontumi’s remarks were disrespectful to the Asante Kingdom, especially the Golden Stool, and warranted an unreserved apology. The controversy emerged during the vetting of NPP parliamentary aspirants in the Ashanti region when Chairman Wontumi purportedly claimed to have “built his own kingdom with military and police force in the Asante Kingdom.”

The statement allegedly followed a confrontation between the regional Chairman and the Manhyia South Organiser for the NPP, Alhaji Abuba.

The Chief of Kokoso, Nana Kwaku Duah, Council of Elders Chairman for Manhyia South, reportedly confronted Wontumi, asserting that, aside from Asantehene, no one in the Asante Kingdom possesses a kingdom.

Ghana will be in safer hands when Bawumia is voted in – Atta Akyea

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, holds the belief that assigning the responsibility of resolving Ghana’s economic challenges to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would significantly benefit the country.

In his view, the most suitable leader to address the country’s economic woes is the Vice President.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV, Atta Akyea dismissed the notion that Dr. Bawumia, as the head of the economic management team, should bear blame for the economic difficulties.

He argued that economic decisions are made by the President, not solely by the Vice President.

Expressing his confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s capabilities, Atta Akyea stated, “This is the first time Ghana is going to have a president who is an economist, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“If the problem of Ghana now and people are talking about its seriousness, I agree to a reasonable extent that the economy is not in its best form. When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist? Ghana will be in a safer pair of hands when we bring Dr. Bawumia.”

He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, as an economist, is well-equipped to handle the economic challenges facing the country and criticized attributing all economic issues to him as “cruel and vile propaganda.”

“This is the first time Ghana is going to have a president who is an economist, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. If the problem of Ghana now and people are talking about its seriousness, I agree to a reasonable extent that the economy is not in its best form. When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist? Ghana will be in a safer pair of hands when we bring Dr. Bawumia.”

“Ghana is going to get a man with shock absorbers, the finest gentleman, to help us solve a major problem facing us, the economy. He was in a very serious adversary role, which is what people don’t want to see. It’s cruel and vile propaganda for everybody to say that let’s place all the economic woes of Akufo-Addo on Dr. Bawumia. It’s unkind,” he said.

  • Choosing Bawumia’s running mate from Ashanti Region seems ‘reasonable’, ‘sensible’ – Prof Oquaye

Choosing Bawumia’s running mate from Ashanti Region seems ‘reasonable’, ‘sensible’ – Prof Oquaye

There appears to be a growing inclination within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the selection of a running mate from the Ashanti Region, described as the party’s “bread basket,” according to former Speaker of Parliament and NPP Council of Elders member, Prof Aaron Michael Oquaye.

In an exclusive interview with 3News’ Beatrice Adu, Prof Oquaye disclosed that there is a positive reception to the idea of choosing a candidate from the Ashanti Region.

He emphasized the perceived importance of regional balance, particularly from the Ashanti Region, suggesting that it would be reasonable and sensible for the running mate to hail from there.

“It appears that there is a feeling generally that if we had a candidate from the Ashanti Region,…the bread basket of the party, it will be reasonable and sensible to balance the ticket. Therefore, it is important to factor that into the equation….,” he suggested.

While the NPP’s constitution does not explicitly mandate regional balance in the selection of running mates, the party has traditionally considered regional representation.

Historical examples include Albert Adu Boahen choosing a running mate from the north (Roland Issifu Alhassan), former President John Kufour selecting Aliu Mahama, and the current President Nana Akufo Addo opting for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Referring to Clause six(b) of Chapter six (6) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, Prof Oquaye highlighted the importance of achieving reasonable regional and gender balance in public offices.

Additionally, Prof Oquaye advised that the potential vice-presidential candidate should not vie for the president’s position, emphasizing the need for harmony and no clash of personalities with the president-elect.

Leaked audio: Suhum MP ‘rats out’ Dep Sports Minister who reportedly insulted his residents

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum in the Eastern Region, Oboafo Kwadwo Asante, is embroiled in controversy after an audio recording surfaced wherein he alleges that Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Evans Opoku Bobie, made derogatory remarks about the people of Suhum.

In the audio, Oboafo Asante claims that when discussing park rehabilitation, the Deputy Minister referred to the people of Suhum as “fools” who do not appreciate such efforts.

The revelation has stirred considerable anger among Suhum residents, who feel offended by the alleged comments.

Despite uncertainty about the Deputy Minister’s actual words, Oboafo Asante did not reprimand him in the audio, further fueling discontent among the delegates.

Oboafo Asante shared the Deputy Minister’s remarks during a meeting with delegates, causing additional outrage as they believe their MP failed to exhibit leadership by not addressing the offensive language.

“I wanted to come and perform the commissioning of the Roman park with minister of youth and sports but he told me to come with the deputy minister’’ the Suhum MP said on the tape.

“When I saw the deputy minister in Parliament, said Kwabena, you will come and do this work for me’’ he said.

He said: “The Deputy Minister asked whether the project was astroturf or natural park, he asked further whether the project was financed by the Sports Ministry or from my pocket.

“When I told him that it was self-financed, he asked how much and I told him, he then remarked, sorry, forgive me for using that word, he said, these fools, these fools that you are using your money to do things for, these fools that when you do things for them, they don’t appreciate.’’ Oboafo Asante said.

The fact that Oboafo Asante repeated the insults while soliciting votes for the upcoming primaries adds to the anger among NPP delegates in Suhum.

Delegates express doubt in Oboafo Asante’s ability to defend the interests of Suhum, especially since he did not confront the Deputy Minister for the alleged disparaging remarks. As Oboafo Asante seeks reelection in 2024, the controversy has raised questions about his trustworthiness among the constituents.

The NPP has set January 27 for its parliamentary primaries.

‘’When I told him that I was rehabilitating the park from my own pocket, the Deputy Minister said you should have done for these….’’

Bawumia to sponsor one-week vacation for Chef Faila and team

In a heartwarming gesture of kindness, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to sponsor a one-week vacation for Guiness World Record (GWR) cook-a-thon attempt breaker, Faila Abdul Razak, her husband.

This was made known after the chef and her team paid a visit to Vice President Dr. Bawumia at the Jubilee House.

The visit follows the vice president’s generous support during the Tamale Cookathon.

In a show of support for her GWR cook-a-thon attempt, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Saturday, 6 January 2024 paid a visit to Chef Abdul-Razak Failatu in Tamale.

Upon arrival at the Modern City Hotel, Dr. Bawumia entered Chef Faila’s cooking space, engaging in conversation with her.

The chef, evidently awestruck by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, displayed intermittent bows as a gesture of reverence while speaking with him.

“When I say it is possible, it means it is possible for us to be the best. It is possible to beat the best in the world. That mindset is what Ghanaians need. That possibility mindset and what Afua did in the sing-a-thon, showed that it was possible to be the best in the world.

“What Faila is also doing here is showing that it is possible to break the world record and we are here to support her so that she does it and we all going to be very happy when she does it,” he said.

Although the content of their conversation remains undisclosed, Chef Faila’s face lit up with smiles at Dr. Bawumia’s words.

The vice president also donated an amount of GH₵30,000 to the Chef.

Accompanying the Vice President were Northern Regional Minister Shani Alhassan Saibu, former NPP flagbearer aspirant Kwabena Agyapong, and other prominent NPP figures.

Addressing the media, Vice President Bawumia commended Chef Faila and event organizer Afua Asantewaa, stating that their endeavor has not only placed Ghana on the map but also serves as a testament to the possibilities achievable when one sets their mind to a goal.

  • Akufo-Addo is doing his best as a president – Atta Akyea

Akufo-Addo is doing his best as a president – Atta Akyea

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has lauded President Akufo-Addo for his performance amid numerous challenges encountered during his tenure.

Akyea highlighted the president’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, unique challenges not faced by his predecessors.

He specifically praised President Akufo-Addo for implementing the free Senior High School policy, emphasizing its significant future benefits.

The MP also acknowledged the initiation of constructing a hospital in every district as a noteworthy achievement.

Speaking on the government’s performance during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, Akyea defended

Akufo-Addo against claims of underperformance, attributing the challenges to the global impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He commended the president’s governance achievements, emphasizing the importance of free education and the ambitious healthcare infrastructure development.

“I don’t think he [Akufo-Addo] has underperformed. What I believe is that he has had a lot of trouble. People underrate the power of COVID-19. President Nkrumah never faced that. The Russia-Ukraine war, of which the evidence is conclusive, the cold fact that economies contracted because of this situation.”

“I think that President Akufo-Addo has been a bad storyteller too. There is no president in this realm called Ghana who said people should go to secondary school for free. You think it is cheap. Even if it is not perfect, given the foundation for this nation to take off in terms of serious brain power in the next 20 years. I have not heard of any president who said every district should have a hospital. These are not low-cost governance achievements,” he stated.

  • The ‘most difficult vocation’ in politics is being an MP – Atta Akyea

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has characterized being an MP as one of the most challenging roles in politics.

The former Minister for Works and Housing expressed concern about the substantial and unconventional responsibilities that accompany the position.

During an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Atta Akyea lamented the constant individual demands placed on MPs by their constituents, often at the expense of collective development and progress.

Describing the situation, he stated, “As if you [MPs] were called to solve mass poverty,” emphasizing the persistent demands from constituents across the country.

Reflecting on his own experience, Atta Akyea suggested that after 16 years, it might be a suitable time to retire from such a demanding role.

He highlighted the unique challenges faced by Members of Parliament, describing it as the most arduous vocation in politics.

He noted the continuous individual demands on MPs by their constituencies, citing examples such as being asked to purchase a coffin for a family in connection with a deceased individual they may not even know.

“As if you [MPs] were called to solve mass poverty,” Mr. Atta Akyea bemoned the unceasing demands of constituents across the country.

“I believe 16 years is a good enough time to hang up your gloves. I am not a young man. There is no more serious undertaking in politics than to become a Member of Parliament. I believe becoming a Member of Parliament is the most difficult vocation anybody can pursue; as if you were called to solve mass poverty, incessant individual demands on the MP by the constituency.”

“For example, how do you feel about buying a coffin for a family in relation to a deceased individual you don’t even know?”

Individuals blaming Bawumia for Ghana’s challenges are cruel – Atta Akyea

The Member of Parliament representing the Akim Abuakwa South constituency, Samuel Atta Akyea, has voiced criticism against those attributing Ghana’s economic challenges to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Acknowledging the economic downturn, Atta Akyea defended Dr. Bawumia, describing the situation as ‘unkind’ and ‘cruel’ to hold the vice president responsible for the issues in the Akufo-Addo government.

Atta Akyea emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, being in a serious adversary role, faced constraints in making sensitive decisions for the country.

Atta Akyea underscored the importance of electing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer in the December polls to bring about positive changes in the country’s fortunes.

He lauded Dr. Bawumia as a distinguished gentleman with ‘shock absorbers’ ready to serve the nation.

Bawumia.”

Expressing concern about the economic challenges, Atta Akyea drew a parallel, stating, “When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist?” He advocated for placing trust in Dr. Bawumia, an economist set to become Ghana’s first president with such credentials.

Addressing the criticism against the vice president, Atta Akyea denounced it as “cruel and vile propaganda” to lay all of Akufo-Addo’s economic burdens on Dr. Bawumia.

During an interview on Face to Face, on Citi TV, Atta Akyea expressed doubt in the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) ability to manage the government’s educational policy, free Senior High Schools (SHS), citing concerns that they didn’t initiate the program.

In the upcoming presidential election, Vice President Bawumia is vying for the presidency, challenging former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, who seeks re-election.

I ‘abandoned’ your constituency because you voted out my candidate – ‘Truthful’ Akufo-Addo tells Ekumfi Chiefs

President Akufo-Addo has disclosed that he deliberately neglected the needs of the people of Ekumfi because they voted the NPP candidate for the area, Francis Kingsley Ato Codjoe, out in the 2020 elections.

During a meeting with traditional leaders in the constituency, the President candidly shared his disappointment with the Ekumfi Chiefs, revealing that the electoral defeat of his preferred candidate prompted a reduction in his engagement with the constituency.

“Ato Cudjoe who was the MP for the area. I made him a deputy minister so that through that he would initiate development projects in the area but it didn’t last. During the subsequent election, he was voted out and these all accounted for my neglect for the area,” he stated.

Despite the disappointment, President Akufo-Addo assured the Chiefs that he will resume engagement with the constituency following their courtesy call.

“But once you’re here, I’ve heard what you’ve said,” he added.

Akosua Manu begins philanthropic works at Adentan constituency; donates learning materials to schools

Newly elected parliamentary candidate for the Adentan constituency under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Akosua Manu, affectionately known as Kozie, has began her philanthropic work in the constituency.

In an extraordinary display of benevolence and a commitment to instill hope throughout the constituency, she has made a remarkable donation of educational materials to a total of thirty-six (36) basic, junior high, and senior high schools scattered across the Adentan constituency.

An impressive donation totaling ten thousand (10,000) exercise books, ten thousand (10,000) pens, ten thousand (10,000) pencils, and an undisclosed quantity of calendars, was dispersed to the diverse schools during the initial two days of the school reopening.

To encourage and motivate these pupils and students, especially the girl child, to whom Akosua Manu holds a special commitment, she led the distribution of these record learning materials to the various schools.

She also mingled with the pupils and students and had hearty conversations with them.

She pledged to address their concerns subsequently, admonishing them to be passionate about their studies, since it is the only means through which they can break the poverty cycle and make meaningful impacts on their lives.

For the teachers, she equally had very engaging conversations and reassured them that as the pivot around which our educational system revolved, the NPP government would keep doing more to better their lot. Also, assuring them that in her, they have an advocate who will champion their interests and needs.

At the Frafraha Community Senior High School (FACOSH), after a durbar of students and teachers, she took turns interacting with teachers and students alike. As it was the first day at school, some parents who had come with their wards also engaged with the parliamentary candidate and expressed their gratitude for her generous gesture.

As the most likely winner in the December 2024 parliamentary elections, Ms. Akosua Manu (Kozie) represents a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale political environment dominated by male MPs since the creation of the constituency in 2004.

It is that feminine touch of motherly care, compassion, and an in-depth understanding of the issues that plague the constituency that she hopes to bring to bear in formulating lasting solutions for the constituency. For Akosua, this is only the start of an exciting developmental relationship with Adentan.

  • Free SHS minus support from parents is meaningless – National Council of PTAs

Free SHS minus support from parents is meaningless – National Council of PTAs

The Western Regional Chairman of the National Council of Parent Teacher Associations, Daniel Vroom-Laryea, has voiced concern over the government’s exclusion from senior high school management.

Stressing the crucial role of parental support for the success of the free Senior High School policy, he pointed out that parents are currently being hindered from assisting schools.

Mr Vroom-Laryea highlighted issues such as over 21 pregnancies in a senior high school due to a lack of walls and the prevention of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) from contributing to schools, which he deemed a significant problem.

“Parents are now being prevented from helping the schools, but we must know that free SHS is meaningless without the support of parents. We even recorded over 21 pregnancies in one of the senior high schools last year, because the school had no wall, and the students were being sneaked out. We are not being made to help, the government has stopped PTA from doing everything in the schools and that is a problem”, he added.

His comments were prompted by revelations from Sally Nelly Coleman, the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Director of the Ghana Education Service, indicating that over 137,000 fresh students placed through the 2023 Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) have not enrolled for admissions in various Senior High Schools.

The Ghana Education Service released the computer placement list for fresh students last year, with a reopening date of January 3, 2024. Coleman expressed concern, stating that out of about 590,000 placements nationwide, only 453,000 students have reported for admissions.

Mr Vroom-Laryea attributed this situation to an unfavorable reopening date, citing complaints from cocoa farmers in rural areas who had little yield and struggled financially to send their children to school. He emphasized that the hidden issues behind the free Senior High School policy make it more expensive than initially thought.

NPP Primaries: Hayford Siaw’s posters defaced at Nsawam Adoagyiri

The Nsawam Adoagyiri Constituency in the Eastern Region is witnessing heightened tension due to the defacement of posters belonging to New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary aspirant Hayford Siaw.

The CEO of the Ghana Library Authority, Hayford Siaw, seeks to unseat the current Member of Parliament for the area, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

In preparation for the party’s January 27 primaries, Mr. Siaw’s publicity team has strategically placed posters across neighborhoods.

However, they have been consistently removed overnight by unidentified individuals.

Supporters of Hayford Siaw confronted those caught defacing the posters, leading to a tense situation.

A video has circulated, allegedly showing a man associated with the incumbent MP physically assaulting a member of Siaw’s team who questioned him about the poster defacement. Bystanders had to intervene to prevent further escalation of tensions between the two camps.

Condemning these acts as cowardly, Mr. Siaw’s supporters are calling for a thorough police investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Despite attempts, contacting the incumbent Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri has proven unsuccessful.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ablekuma West constituency, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has asserted that none of the aspiring candidates vying for the parliamentary seat in her constituency can rival her track record in terms of development.

In an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, expressed confidence in her ability to outshine any contender when it comes to serving the constituents and driving development initiatives.

“When you look at those contesting for the Ablekuma West constituency, both in NPP and NDC, I believe that the kind of work I would be able to do, they can’t do a quarter of it because I started doing politics from way back,” she said.

The minister emphasized that her commitment to the constituency transcends party lines.

“I don’t only do NPP work in the constituency, and when you look at parliament, those that really contribute, I am part of them. When it comes to the females, I am one of the leading female parliamentarians.

“I have the belief that I can do it better than any other aspirant on both sides of the political divide, so they should allow me to continue my tenure and continue with my good works,” she affirmed.

  • Haruna Iddrisu’s supporters allegedly threaten to punish Mahama in 2024 over his ‘demotion’

Haruna Iddrisu’s supporters allegedly threaten to punish Mahama in 2024 over his ‘demotion’

A video of the former Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, dancing to a northern ethnic song has sparked controversy on social media, as an NPP activist claims that the NDC northern caucus is deeply divided and unhappy with John Mahama.

The video, which was posted by @Gen_Buhari, an NPP activist, on Twitter, shows Hon. Iddrisu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tamale-South, dancing and smiling at a public event.

However, the caption of the video suggests that the MP is not happy with the NDC leadership, especially the former President and flagbearer, John Mahama, who is seeking to contest the 2024 elections.

“The NDC northern caucus is deeply divided, the supporters of Haruna Iddrisu have vowed to punish John Mahama in the 2024 elections, its this same issue that led to the attack on Chairman Azoka and the Northern Regional Treasurer, Haruna Iddrissu’s demotion at Parliament is the worse mistake NDC did and they’ll be punished mercilessly for that, you can’t hate Dagombas and expect their votes in election. Interesting times ahead,” the caption reads.

This post has elicited diverse responses on Twitter, with some endorsing the claim and others dismissing it as mischief and propaganda.

One of the comments, written by @Arena_Odd, said: “I have not been seeing Haruna Iddrisu at any NDC gathering off late.” To which @Gen_Buhari replied in Ghanaian pidgin English: “He vex waaaa”, meaning he is very angry.

@Gen_Buhari alleged that the NDC northern caucus, especially the supporters of Hon. Iddrisu, who is a Dagomba, have vowed to punish John Mahama, who is a Gonja, in the 2024 elections, by either voting for the NPP or boycotting the polls. He said that the NDC cannot expect to win the votes of the Dagombas.

Despite these allegations, some Twitter users have questioned the credibility and legitimacy of the information provided by @Gen_Buhari, suggesting it might be part of the NPP’s propaganda to create division within the NDC, especially as the 2024 elections approach.
