The re-election campaign for the Member of Parliament (MP) seat in Ayawaso West Wuogon has encountered increased challenges for Lydia Seyram Alhassan.
Prince David Osei, a former supporter who actively campaigned for her during the 2020 election, seems to be withdrawing his support, adding to the complexity of Alhassan’s bid to retain her seat.
The renowned Ghanaian actor and staunch supporter of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a surprising announcement, revealing his intention to throw his support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, John Dumelo. This unexpected shift in allegiance has stirred intrigue in the political landscape.
Speaking in a GHOne interview on December 1, 2023, the actor explained that his decision to support Dumelo despite the fact that he is a member of the NPP is because the current MP has failed to address the needs of the constituency.
He said all attempts to get the MP to listen to the needs of her constituents, particularly students of the University of Ghana, have proven futile.
“Personnel, it would not be shocking if you see me on a platform campaigning for John to win the Ayawaso seat even though he is NDC… I’m NPP but I would support John. You shouldn’t be alarmed if that happens because I feel like when people go all out for you, you don’t take them for granted. I stood on that platform, got a lot of insults because of Maa Lydia.
“At a point, I sent messages to her PA that some of these Legon students are really going through (sic), I have been trying to support you, you’re the MP so hear them. They never replied, nothing happened,” he said.
The actor added, “So personally, I felt like ok, if we are the same people that went there, got all the insults and humiliation all because they said we stood against our friend. Then if John has gotten the nod again, we would support him”.
Lydia Alhassan would face John Dumelo in the 2024 parliament if she emerges victorious in the upcoming NPP primaries which is slated for January 20, 2024.
Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr John Kwakye, has brought attention to the mismanagement of the country’s economy by the two prominent political parties over the course of the past 32 years.
In a notable stance, Dr John Kwakye urged the presidential candidates of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to issue apologies to the Ghanaian public for the perceived mishandling of the economy.
Dr John Kwakye noted that the prevailing economic challenges in Ghana partly stem from the actions of the two primary political parties.
Dr. Kwakye charged the two main flagbearers, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Dramani Mahama, to explain to the electorate the things they would do differently if given the mandate to be at the helm of affairs of the country.
The IEA Director of Research called on voters to reject these two presidential candidates if they are unable to table the policies they have put in place to turn the economy around.
In a post on X, Dr Kwakye said, “NPP and NDC must apologise to Ghanaians for bringing the country, once the shining star of Africa, to its current sordid state. Their presidential candidates should tell us what they are going to do differently to turn the economy around. Otherwise, they don’t deserve our mandate.”
He added, “NPP and NDC presidential candidates must first admit their party failures in the past 32 years and tell Ghanaians what they are going to do differently to turn this country around. Otherwise, they should be rejected by the electorate. NPP and NDC have woefully failed Ghana over the past 32 years. Their presidential candidates should openly admit the NPP and NDC failings and tell us what they are going to do differently. Otherwise, the electorate should reject them.”
The former president, John Mahama is seeking re-election, whereas the vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is seeking election to be the president.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially declared the initiation of the vetting process for parliamentary aspirants in constituencies with incumbent MPs.
The vetting sessions are slated to take place from January 3 to 5, 2024, simultaneously across all regional capitals.
This crucial step underscores the party’s commitment to the transparent and timely selection of candidates ahead of the upcoming political landscape.
Additionally, the party has formed several committees tasked with overseeing and managing the vetting procedures.
Some of the persons appointed as national representatives on the committee include NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, NPP National Women Organizer Kate Gyamfua, Prof Addai Mensah, Gary Nimako, among others.

Currently running for the MP position in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Dumelo shared on his Twitter handle on January 1st that he intends to address the issue of exorbitant rent charges.
Expressing his concern, Dumelo highlighted that Ghanaians are supposed to pay a maximum of 6 months’ rent for residential properties.
However, he pointed out that many landlords demand an upfront two-year rent advance before leasing properties. If elected, John Dumelo has pledged to prioritize addressing this issue as one of his initial actions in office.
“The first thing I will champion when I become a member of parliament is the rent issue. Ghanaians must pay a maximum 6-month rent advance for residential properties,” he posted.
The Rent Control Department of Ghana has cautioned landlords against demanding more than six months’ rent in advance from their tenants, saying this is against the law and can lead to prosecution.
The department’s PRO, Emmanuel Kporsu, in an interview earlier in the year that tenants can voluntarily pay more than six months’ rent in advance if they wish, but landlords cannot force them to do so.
The first thing i will champion when I become member of parliament is the rent issue. Ghanaians must pay maximum 6 months rent advance for residential properties.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to conduct parliamentary primaries this month in constituencies where there are currently sitting Members of Parliament.
In some cases, experienced MPs are choosing not to seek re-election, while others are competing to represent the party in its stronghold of the Ashanti Region.
According to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, who serves as the regional chairman, nine sitting MPs have officially confirmed their decision not to seek re-election.
These MPs, along with their respective constituencies, are as follows:
The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has refuted claims that outspoken NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) who have been critical of the government are intentionally being singled out for removal in the forthcoming parliamentary primaries.
The claims were made by Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, an opposition MP representing Odododiodoo.
Vanderpuye specifically cited Eugene Boakye Antwi of Subin and Andy Appiah-Kubi of Asante-Akim North, both of whom had been vocal in advocating for the removal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, as examples of MPs allegedly facing targeted elimination.
During an appearance on the Key Points program on TV3, Vanderpuye stated, “These individuals are being targeted by the establishment,” while discussing the decisions of some lawmakers, including Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, not to seek reelection.
In response, Ahiagbah refuted the claim on the same show, stating, “The idea that some MPs are being targeted is not true. The space is competitive, so if you are afraid of some contest you can’t make that claim.”
NPP closed nominations on December 25 for parliamentary aspirants in constituencies with incumbent MPs.
The parliamentary election is scheduled for January 27, 2024, marking the next phase of the party’s efforts to have representatives in all 275 constituencies. This follows the successful primaries held in orphan constituencies on December 2.
As of the close of nominations on Christmas day, some seasoned party members opted not to submit forms, signaling a voluntary end to their parliamentary careers.
One notable figure on this list is Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who has represented the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region since 1997.

Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Okyere has urged President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to address what he perceives as the Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem’s disregard for the Constitution.
According to Dr. Okyere, Kwaning-Bosompem’s continued presence in office is a violation of both the Constitution and the Code of Conduct governing the Civil Service in Ghana.
Despite serving as the Controller and Accountant General, Kwaning-Bosompem has declared his intention to run in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries for the Akyem Swedru Constituency in the Eastern Region, scheduled for January 27.
Dr. Okyere’s concerns were expressed following confirmation by Prof. Dominic Fobih, the Akyem Swedru Constituency Chairman of the NPP, acknowledging Kwaning-Bosompem as one of three aspirants in the party’s primaries for the constituency.
Responding to queries about a potential breach of the constitution, Prof. Fobih deferred to the courts as the appropriate authority to make such determinations. The Supreme Court has previously ruled that a member of the Civil Service or Local Government Service cannot continue in those roles after being sworn in as a member of a District Assembly.
This situation has raised widespread concerns, as Kwaning-Bosompem remains in his role as Controller and Accountant General while actively participating in political campaigning for the 2024 elections.
In its New Year message, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) called on Ghanaians to work towards securing a brighter future for the country by ousting the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections.
The NDC attributed Ghana’s current economic challenges to mismanagement by the governing party.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, encouraged citizens to perceive the 2024 elections as an opportunity to positively transform the nation’s trajectory.
“In the spirit of unity and shared aspirations for progress, let us recognize this upcoming election as an opportunity to shape a brighter future and address the challenges imposed by the present leadership. Despite the economic difficulties, the National Democratic Congress remains committed to serving the interests of all Ghanaians, working towards a future characterized by inclusivity, economic development, and social harmony.”
“As we bid farewell to 2023, a year marked by economic hardships inflicted by the current NPP government, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) extends warm New Year wishes to the resilient people of Ghana,” Mr. Kwetey stated.
The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has downplayed calls for the Controller and Accountant-General, Mr Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, to resign before contesting the party’s parliamentary primaries.
He said there was no specific rule currently that barred the Controller and Accountant-General from contesting a political office while holding on to his current position.
Mr Kwaning-Bosompem is seeking to lead the NPP as its Parliamentary Candidate in the Akim Swedru Constituency in the Eastern Region in the coming 2024 general election.
However, since news of his decision to contest the seat broke, there have been many calls from some political parties, political commentators, and civil servants, including the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), for him to vacate the position as the Controller and Accountant-General.
Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s “The Key Points” programme, on Saturday, Mr Ahiagba rejected such calls, indicating that the position of the Controller and Accountant-General was a “unique” one.
He argued that Mr Kwaning-Bosompem’s position was different from that of ministers, Members of Parliament, or district chief executives, who were in roles that required constant partisan political decisions.
According to him, the current Controller and Accountant-General was “not a civil servant in the true sense of the word” because he was a government appointee.
Therefore, Mr Ahiagbah insisted the Controller and Accountant-General needed not to resign before contesting for any political position. He explained that the Controller and Accountant-General was a technical and professional position that did not involve political decisions.
“There is no doubt about rendering the position of the law, I think there is no dispute about that, but what I’m saying is that we have a unique situation in this Controller and Accountant-General position where technically, he was out of the civil service and brought back in. All the examinations that we are talking about, none of them conform to his particular situation.
“If anybody wants to parallel what ruling exists to say that, therefore, he resigns, I’m saying that there is a unique instance. Perhaps, the Supreme Court can give a ruling,” he said.
Mr Ahiagbah added that “he [Controller and Accountant-General] has gone out [of civil service] and come in by an appointment. So, technically, he is not a civil servant in the true sense of the word, he is a government appointee based on that.
“There is no rule currently that deals with his position in terms of any ruling.”
Mr Bobby Banson, a private legal practitioner, on the same programme, insisted that the Controller and Accountant-General’s continuous stay in office while vying for a political position amounted to breaking the law.
Article 94(3) (b) of the 1992 Constitution states that; “A person shall not be eligible to be a member of Parliament if he is a member of the Police Service, the Prisons Service, the Armed Forces, the Judicial Service, the Legal Service, the Civil Service\the Audit Service, the Parliamentary Service, the Statistical Service, the Fire Service, the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service, the Immigration Service, or the internal Revenue Service.”
Mr Banson, therefore, urged the NPP to disqualify the Controller and Accountant-General from contesting the party’s parliamentary primaries if he failed to resign from his current position.
Dr Rasheed Draman, Executive Director, African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs, warned against any action that could lead to the politicisation of both the civil and public service.
“There are very good reasons why we want to keep our civil and public servants away from politics, and I think the parties must do all in their power to make sure that we don’t get to this level,” he stressed.
Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has expressed profound disappointment over former President, John Dramani Mahama’s recent remarks, which downplayed the success of the Free SHS program.
Addressing journalists during the Christmas festivities in Akim Anyinase, Minister Oppong-Nkrumah criticized Mahama for undermining the accomplishments of SHS graduates.
“It is disheartening to observe how Former President Mahama will go all lengths to belittle the Free SHS program and its results simply because it didn’t emanate from him,” stated Minister Oppong Nkrumah.
The recently released 2023 WASSCE results, considered the best since 2015, have been attributed to the positive impact of the Free SHS policy. However, former President Mahama, during his country tour, discredited the outcome of the examination pointing to malpractices and students conniving with teachers to cheat.
Reacting to Mr. Mahama’s claims, the Ofoase Ayirebi legislator found his accusations of malpractices and cheating “shocking and disappointing,” emphasizing that such remarks disregard the hard work and accomplishments of the students who benefited from the initiative.
“While he may not like the entire SHS program, he shouldn’t try so hard to denigrate the beneficiaries. Yes, the program may have some challenges, but to say that even the exceptional success of the students is fake is just amazing,” the Minister added.
Minister Oppong Nkrumah recounted the stiff opposition from Mahama and the NDC to the Free SHS programme, emphasizing that the former President’s comments are a continuation of that stance.
This, he urged constructive discussions to improve the Free SHS initiative and enhance the education sector, emphasizing that Ghana would be better served with ideas rather than attempts to undermine the efforts and achievements of the beneficiaries.
In its recent analysis of the social media presence of Ghana’s leading political parties, IMANI Africa revealed that during December, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had a significant social media reach of approximately 14 million, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lagged behind with a reach of about 3.1 million.
According to IMANI’s Public Understanding and Literacy for Sentiment and Election analysis (PULSE), NPP garnered 266,000 interactions, surpassing NDC’s 192,000-plus interactions stemming from comments and posts.
The report underscored that the social media discourse overwhelmingly favored NPP, and traditional web-based sources reflected a dominance of around 90% of content related to the party.
Introducing a new metric called Advertising Value Equivalent, the report estimated the value of the social media reach as if the content were paid for.
In December, NPP’s Advertising Value Equivalent exceeded $1.14 million, while NDC’s was a more modest $251,000-plus.
Selorm Branttie, Leader Researcher at IMANI Africa, highlighted the substantial difference in total media engagement on social media between NPP and NDC.
Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, emphasized the significance of these facts, stating on his Facebook page, “Facts are sacred. Start work.”
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has emphasized the imperative to enhance the understanding of multiparty democracy as a means to preserve the unity of the country in anticipation of the 2024 general elections.
In his Christmas address to the Ghanaian people, Speaker Bagbin underscored the significance of 2024, deeming it a critical year due to the impending elections.
He expressed a hopeful prayer that efforts be directed towards deepening the comprehension and practice of multiparty democracy, urging that differences should serve to unite rather than divide.
Speaker Bagbin articulated the need to safeguard and augment Ghana’s democratic principles.
He acknowledged the pivotal role played by the robust partnership among political parties, the media, civil society organizations (CSOs), the clergy, and other entities in sustaining democracy over the past 30 years.
“We have, as a nation, been able to stay the course, 30 continuous uninterrupted democratic rule because of the partnership between not just the political parties alone but the media, CSOs, and our traditional leaders.
“I think it is important we continue this partnership, strengthening it and in fact, making sure that every organ of the state, private sector, and CSO is strengthened,” he said.
He added “30 years is a great achievement. Ghana has made it globally, your parliament now leads the Parliamentary Community in the world, we chair and preside over the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association made up of 182 parliaments of the world, and we chair and preside over the Conference of Speakers and Heads of Parliament Africa, and we are in the leadership of the World Parliament, now called the Interparliamentary Union.
“By virtue of a number of decisions and laws passed by Parliament, we are now a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council. As you all know, we also sit at the Security Council, so Ghana is now in its rightful place as the heart of the world. This is an achievement that we should be proud of and we should do everything we can to deepen the democratic culture and inspire the challenges we are facing.”
The Speaker called for the reinforcement of this collaboration, emphasizing the importance of strengthening every organ of the state, private sector, and CSOs.
Reflecting on Ghana’s achievements over the years, Speaker Bagbin highlighted the nation’s global recognition in parliamentary leadership. He noted that Ghana, through its Parliament, chairs and presides over the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Conference of Speakers and Heads of Parliament in Africa. Additionally, the country is actively engaged in the Interparliamentary Union, holding a leadership position in the World Parliament.
Acknowledging Ghana’s membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council and its role in the Security Council, Speaker Bagbin celebrated the country’s elevation to a central position on the world stage. He urged pride in these accomplishments and called for collective efforts to deepen the democratic culture, addressing the challenges faced by the nation.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has indicated that it will officially know by Friday, December 29, how many of its parliamentarians will not seek re-election.
A notable number of NPP MPs, including some considered heavyweights in both the party and national politics, are stepping down from Parliament. This development has raised concerns among political observers regarding the impact on the NPP’s prospects in the 2024 general elections.
Haruna Mohammed, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, has reassured that the party has a substantial number of capable individuals to succeed the experienced but retiring legislators.
Notable figures such as Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, 1st Deputy Speaker Joe Osei-Wusu, and former Ministers like Joe Ghartey, Samuel Atta Akyea, Dan Botwe, and Kwasi Amoako-Atta have decided not to seek re-election.
Haruna Mohammed, speaking to JoyNews over the phone, reassured that it is typical for the NPP to mentor leaders, and the party has adequately mentored individuals capable of taking over.
He emphasized that there is no cause for alarm regarding the departure of experienced figures, as the NPP has a succession plan in place to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
“… By tomorrow we’ll have a formal report of those who will not be going. However, the New Patriotic Party has always positioned themselves well when it comes to parliamentary representation.
“We encourage the use of mentorship and also to make sure that we get the right persons to fill those particular positions. Even though parliament will be losing experienced hands in terms of contribution, in terms of procedure, and what have you, if you look at the likes of JH Mensah, the likes of Hackman Owusu Agyeman, the likes of Papa Owusu-Ankoma, and co, when Parliament was so very interesting in those days, you could see that we have been able to bring up new persons in the form of the current Majority Leader who was in that Parliament. But you are seeing more from him, you have seen Afenyo Markin, you see Habib Iddrisu. So new upcoming politicians and members of parliament or representatives from the NPP have always contributed their quota and the exit of these experienced ones as you are mentioning, I believe that we will get more and more experienced ones…” he said.

Ace journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has voiced his concerns regarding the limited autonomy afforded to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the selection of his running mate for the upcoming elections.
Reportedly, over 10 influential figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are competing for the position, intensifying lobbying efforts across regional groups, particularly NPP opinion leaders in Greater Accra.
Supporters in the Greater Accra region specifically advocate for the presidential candidate to choose a Ga as the running mate.
However, Kwesi Pratt strongly criticized the emphasis on tribal considerations, asserting that competence should be the primary criterion. He labeled such lobbying practices as “foolishness” and questioned the significance of one’s tribal background, emphasizing the importance of intellectual capacity.
“Why are we indulging in tribalism? Whether the person is Ga or Frafra, what difference does it make? Let’s be serious!!! The main criteria should not be where the person is coming from but their capacity to think,” he exclaimed.
Kwesi Pratt expressed concern that the unnecessary pressure on the Vice President is detrimental to his candidacy for the 2024 general elections.
“This will not help Bawumia…why are you doing this to this man; no presidential candidate since 1992 has been treated this way. It’s as if Bawumia can’t make decisions of his own. Now we’ve got to the level of dictation; stop that,” he fumed.
The veteran journalist disclosed that a similar situation appears to be unfolding within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and called for an end to what he described as “foolishness” gripping all political parties.
Kwesi Pratt made these remarks during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo.’
Once again Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has voiced criticism against President Akufo-Addo’s position on the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2023, 1 and 2, and the Ghana Armed Forces Amendment Bill 2023.
Bagbin has expressed reservations, contending that the President’s stance not only runs counter to constitutional procedures but also raises doubts about the fate of Private Members’ Bills.
In response to the President’s letter to Parliament, where reasons for refusing assent were cited as financial implications and potential breaches of Article 108 of the Constitution, Bagbin argued that this approach establishes an impractical standard.
President Akufo-Addo specifically highlighted the financial burdens linked to the Ghana Armed Forces Amendment Bill, sponsored by MP Francis Xavier Sosu, aiming to replace the death penalty with life imprisonment.
In an official statement released on Friday, December 29, Bagbin underscored that Article 106(8) outlines a clear protocol for the presidential refusal to assent.
This process involves specifying objections for Parliamentary reconsideration rather than an outright rejection of the bill.
Bagbin expressed deep concerns about the potential consequences of the President’s approach, emphasizing its contradiction to established constitutional procedures and its possible impact on the future consideration of Private Members’ Bills.
“Article 106(8) clearly outlines the protocol for presidential refusal to assent, which involves specifying objections for Parliamentary reconsideration, not a blanket rejection of the bill.”
“This approach, as taken by the President, not only contradicts the constitutional procedure but also poses serious implications for the future of Private Members’ Bills, as it implies an unrealistic standard where virtually every bill could be construed as having financial implications,” the Speaker’s statement issued on Friday, December 29, stated.
Self-proclaimed prophet Eric Boahen Uche has boldly stated that Kennedy Agyapong, a politician and businessman, will eventually assume the presidency of Ghana.
During a recent interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show with Roselyn Felli, the prophet asserted that the destiny of the Assin North Member of Parliament includes leading the country.
“Kennedy Agyapong would definitely become president of Ghana; there is no two ways about it. He’s destined to become president,” he reiterated.
Prophet Uche also highlighted certain noteworthy qualities of Mr. Agyapong that, in his opinion, will bolster his likelihood of becoming president. He emphasized that Kennedy Agyapong’s respectfulness and overall character make him a strong candidate for an exceptional presidency.
Recounting his encounter with the Assin North MP’, the prophet said, “When he and Kweku Annan fired shots at men of God, I had to go to him on behalf of a fellow pastor they had decided to criticize. On my arrival at his place, he came by himself to escort me from my car to his office.”
As Kennedy’s name increasingly becomes linked with presidential aspirations, the prophet’s pronouncements have introduced a new layer of complexity and intrigue into the country’s political narrative.
While some may approach these predictions with skepticism, Prophet Uche’s words have sparked curiosity and speculation regarding Kennedy Agyapong’s political trajectory among those who place belief in prophetic insights.
Kennedy Agyapong surprised political analysts by garnering over 71,000 votes in the presidential primaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), securing the second position after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who received just over 118,000 votes to become the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections.
Even more surprising to many was Agyapong’s ability to secure the second position after Bawumia in the party’s super delegates conference, challenging initial expectations that the primary contest was primarily between former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and Dr. Bawumia.
Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has expressed the view that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy as the NPP’s flagbearer in the upcoming 2024 general elections provides the party with a strategic advantage to compete effectively against the NDC in the northern regions.
According to Akomea, the Vice President’s candidacy serves to dispel the long-held perception that the NPP is an exclusive party catering only to a specific demographic.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, he emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s presence brings diversity and inclusivity to the party’s brand image.
“He gives the party a chance to diversify the branding; he gives us the opportunity to have a much more inclusive branding for the party. Over the period we’ve always had leadership from a certain group and this is the first time we’ve gone outside the group so it gives us a more inclusive image,” he said.
Nana Akomea also holds the belief that the candidacy of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is poised to have a significant impact on the electoral prospects of the NDC in the northern regions.
He highlighted that, following Dr. Bawumia’s roles as Vice President and now a presidential candidate, the NPP’s influence in the north has seen considerable growth. This growth has even extended to surpassing the NDC in parliamentary elections, according to Nana Akomea.
“Bawumia erases that propaganda and he gives us a fighting chance to neutralize the NDC in one of their strongholds which is the north. And if you look at the northern region, the NPP is now the majority party in the northern region. When the seats became 31 seats for the 2012 elections, NPP had ten and the NDC had the rest. I think there was one independent out of the 31 seats.
“As we speak today, NPP has 16 seats and NDC has 15. Who would have imagined that the NPP would today be the majority party in the northern region, but we are. And when you look at the presidential vote from 2008, it’s been going up for the number of constituencies the NPP has been winning since 2008 in the north, now we have almost shared it.
“We’ve won in about 14 and the NDC won 17 constituencies so we’re inching up the presidential, for the parliamentary we’ve taken over. And if you look at Bawumia’s home constituency, Walewale, we won it for the first time in 2012 and we’ve still retained it as our seat.
“So he gives us the best opportunity to give the NDC a showdown in some of their strongholds particularly in the north. And we also hope that in the zongos he’ll also give them a showdown. And if he’s able to neutralize the NDC in two of their strongholds that gives us a fighting chance to retain power,” he stated.
Expressing concerns about Ghana potentially losing its standing as the world’s second-largest cocoa producer to Ecuador, former President John Dramani Mahama attributes the decline in cocoa production to what he perceives as detrimental policies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Mahama points to Ghana’s cocoa production of 960,000 metric tonnes in 2016, contending that policies implemented by the NPP have negatively impacted the industry.
Specifically, he highlights the discontinuation of free fertilizer provision to farmers, resulting in increased challenges such as pest infestations and a subsequent decline in productivity.
On December 22, 2023, at a durbar in Nyankumasi Ahenkro, in the Assin South district of the Central region, the former President expressed apprehension about Ghana’s diminishing cocoa production compared to the rising output in Ecuador.
In his role as the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama urged residents to support the NDC’s bid for power, emphasizing the importance of reinstating the free fertilizer policy to boost cocoa yields.
Mahama warned of the possibility that Ecuador could surpass Ghana as the second-largest cocoa producer without intervention.
He stated, “The cocoa sector is collapsing because the trees are dying since there is no fertilizer to apply. There is a country called Ecuador who were nowhere near our production capacity, but they are now producing over 300,000 to almost 400,000 tonnes, and Ghana has been dropping consistently.
“If the NDC doesn’t come to save our cocoa from collapsing, Ecuador will overtake us as the second-largest producer,” Mahama stated as he addressed residents in Twi during his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Central region.
Delivering these remarks in Twi during his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Central region, Mahama used the platform to gather ideas for the NDC’s People’s Manifesto for the 2024 elections.
The Ashanti Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrews Nana Akwasi, has declared that no amount of effort can rescue the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from facing opposition.
Speaking with Akoma News, Nana Akwasi directly accused President Akufo-Addo of causing irreversible damage to the economy, stating, “No miracle can save the NPP from going into position, with this level of mismanagement?”.
He highlighted the recent district-level elections as a clear indication of the public’s mass rejection of the governing party, particularly in the Ashanti region.
Nana Akwasi pointed out that NDC-affiliated assembly members secured 366 electoral areas in the Ashanti region, signaling a growing acceptance of the NDC among the people.
“in the Ashanti region alone NDC affiliate assembly members secured 366 electoral areas an indication that the majority of the people in the Ashanti region are beginning to accept the NDC.”
Encouraging party supporters, he emphasized the need to persist in canvassing votes for the party, noting, “Even our flagbearer is not resting; moving all over the country to preach change to the people, we are not resting until we get the power.”
As he concluded, Nana Akwasi extended festive wishes, saying, “I wish all NDC supporters, sympathizers, and every Ghanaian a merry Christmas.”
Tema West, Ahafo Ano North, Essikado Ketan, Sefwi Wiaso, Ahanta West, Ahafo Ano South West and Ahafo Ano South East could be NDC seats in the next parliament
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) concluded nominations on Monday, December 25 for parliamentary aspirants in constituencies where it currently has sitting Members of Parliament (MPs).
The election is scheduled for January 27, 2024, marking the next stage of the party’s initiative to secure parliamentarians in all 275 constituencies.
The preceding primaries successfully took place in what the party terms “orphan constituencies” on December 2.
However, as nominations closed on Christmas day, several seasoned members of the party chose not to submit forms, voluntarily deciding to conclude their parliamentary careers.
The following is a list of prominent MPs from the 8th Parliament who will not be seeking reelection in 2025:

William Owuraku Aidoo (Afigya Kwabre South Constituency). He has been in Parliament since 2013.
Achieving another milestone, Dr. Ayew Afriyie, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, has gone unopposed in his constituency.
Effiduase Asokore, once known for its contentious primaries, now experiences newfound peace under Dr. Ayew Afriyie’s dynamic leadership.
Closing the nomination period on December 25, he stood as the sole candidate, receiving overwhelming endorsements from high-profile personalities, including Chiefs and religious leaders. This achievement follows his stellar coordination of activities during the DMB Campaign in the region.
Dr. Ayew Afriyie, widely expected to lead the party’s national campaign, has successfully transformed Effiduase Asokore into a symbol of stability and positive change since his election as MP.
Earlier this year, President Akufo-Addo praised Dr. Ayew Afriyie for his crucial role in the success of the Kumawu by-election, where the NPP retained its seat.
Before the demise of the former MP for Kumawu, Philip Basoah, internal issues had marred the party.
The council nominated Dr. Ayew Afriyie to mend the cracks and ensure effective organization.
President Akufo-Addo commended him for his organizational skills throughout the electioneering period, acknowledging his efforts from the planning stages to the day of the polls.
Presidential Staffer Nana Yaw Boadu has submitted his nomination form to contest the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Evans Opoku Bobie, for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidacy in the Asunafo North Constituency in the 2024 elections.
Opoku Bobie, who is also the Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, is seeking his 3rd term in parliament and faces competition from three other aspirants.
Nana Yaw Boadu filed his forms at the party’s constituency office in Goaso, cheered on by supporters. In an interview, he expressed the belief that it is time for the delegates to vote out the sitting MP, citing a decline in popularity due to a lack of development.
Mr Boadu emphasized the need for a change in the choice of a parliamentary candidate to avoid potential loss of the seat for the NPP.
Nana Yaw Boadu submitting his forms for the NPP Asunafo North Primaries
“In the 2016 elections, both Nana Akufo-Addo and Opoku Bobie won with 7,000 votes each. Nana Akufo-Addo had over 36,000 votes in the 2020 elections, while Bobie had over 34,000 votes. But the National Democratic Congress first-time candidate closed the gap from 7,000 to 3,000 votes. What shows that if we vote for Bobie again, we will not lose the seat”, Mr. Boadu, who hails from Mim, asked.
“What is left is for all delegates to change the party candidate and introduce a new face in the person of Nana Yaw Boadu”, he said, adding that he is the best to lead the party.
Presidential staffer Nana Yaw Boadu, participating in the primaries for the first time, urged the party’s executives to ensure fairness throughout the election process, emphasizing the importance of an equal playing field for all candidates.
Supporters of Mr. Boadu acknowledged his contributions to the party’s growth and the development of the constituency. They highlighted his assistance in logistical support, providing party offices for five electoral areas, community services, and offering employment opportunities for the youth.
Three other aspirants who filed their nominations to challenge the incumbent MP for Asunafo North are Farouk Nkrumah, Jones Afriyie-Anto, and Alfred Asiedu.
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has cautioned Ghanaians against succumbing to what he describes as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) numerous “phantom” and “unfulfilled” promises leading up to the 2024 general election.
He emphasized that as the incumbent government nearing the conclusion of its second term, the natural expectation would be for the government to present its re-election bid grounded in its present achievements and track record.
“Instead, we see the NPP making very grandiose promises to Ghanaians of what they would do if re-elected while staying silent on how their abysmal current performance, an indicator of how well they will do if re-elected,” he said.
Speaking at separate durbars in the Central Region, he described the 2016, 2020 and the yet-to-be-announced 2024 manifesto of the NPP as “promises made, promises broken and promises repeated.”
Acknowledging the NDC National Chairman’s call for the residents of the Central Region to assume responsibility for the party and enhance its standing as a stronghold, particularly given the significant presence of several party stalwarts in leadership roles, he highlighted the influential contributions of past leaders. These include the late Kow Nkensen Arkaah and Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur, both former Vice Presidents, as well as the late Prof John Evans Atta Mills, former President. Additionally, he noted the roles of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, a former Education Minister, and the late Ama Benyiwa Doe, former Central Regional Minister.
The National Chairman stressed the importance of reconsidering the region’s voting patterns, asserting that it was evident Ghana needed a new direction. This necessitates the election of a new leader who can leverage their credibility with the people to uplift the region and the country as a whole.
“Election 2024 is very critical in the country’s history with greater emphasis on a leader who will be the preference of the majority of Ghanaians and not just a leader of a political party,” he said.
Addressing the concerns raised by Mr. Nketia, Prof Richard Kofi Asiedu, the Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, reassured that in the 2020 election, the party demonstrated strength by winning 13 out of the 23 parliamentary seats and securing 45.9 per cent of the presidential votes.
Despite this achievement, the regional party leadership remains steadfast in its commitment to enhance the NDC’s performance in the region. Their ambitious goal for the 2024 elections is to surpass the 45.9 per cent presidential vote from 2020 and achieve over 60 per cent.
As part of their strategic plans, the party aims to secure victories in at least 20 out of the 23 parliamentary seats and garner more than 60 per cent of the presidential votes. The set targets involve elevating the parliamentary seats from 13 to 20 and increasing the presidential votes from 45.9 per cent to 60 per cent in the upcoming elections.
The nomination phase for parliamentary primaries in constituencies with incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) concluded on Monday, December 25.
Reports suggest that notable NPP figures, including Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Daniel Kwaku Botwe, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, and Samuel Atta-Akyea, MP for Abuakwa South, among others, have opted not to seek re-election.
Initiated on December 20, 2023, the Party commenced the nomination process for parliamentary aspirants in constituencies with sitting MPs.
Scheduled for January 27, 2024, the NPP plans to finalize its internal election process to determine parliamentary candidates for the upcoming 2024 elections.
Anticipation for closely contested races is high in constituencies such as Dome-Kwabenya, Ablekuma West, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, and Asante Akyem South.
Additionally, constituencies like Akim Swedru, Bantama, Bekwai, and Fomena are also expected to witness intense competition during the primaries.
Minister of State at the Finance Ministry and incumbent Member of Parliament for Karaga Constituency in the Northern Region, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has submitted his nomination for re-election, emphasizing his candidacy on a robust track record.
As the sole candidate in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primaries for Karaga Constituency, Dr. Amin Adam highlighted, “I successfully filed my nomination to seek re-election as NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Karaga Constituency. I had the privilege of being the sole Aspirant to have filed my nomination. My decision to seek re-election is based on a solid record of unprecedented development in the constituency’
In the 2020 general elections, Dr. Amin Adam made history by becoming the first NPP candidate to secure the Karaga parliamentary seat since its creation in 2004.
He achieved this victory by garnering 28,335 votes, surpassing the incumbent MP from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhassan Sualihu Dandawaa, who had held the seat since 2012 and received 19,690 votes.
His electoral success was unexpected, given the constituency’s historical loyalty to the NDC.
Since taking office, Dr. Amin Adam has played a pivotal role in launching numerous projects in health, education, and other sectors, establishing himself as the frontrunner for the 2024 elections.
The Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency, also the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, is poised for a second uncontested run as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate in the Damongo Constituency.
As of the closure of nominations on Monday, December 25, 2023, Mr. Jinapor, the incumbent MP, stood as the sole nominee in the constituency.
The Damongo Constituency, situated in the Savannah Region, has traditionally been a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1993.
However, in the 2020 elections, Mr. Jinapor secured a surprising victory against the incumbent MP, Adam Mutawakilu, clinching over fifty-four percent (54%) of the valid votes and marking the first NPP victory in the constituency.
Following his election, President Akufo-Addo appointed him as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, a position he continues to hold.
Nominations for constituencies with sitting MPs opened on December 20, 2023, and across the nation, individuals have filed to challenge incumbent MPs, prompting calls from traditional leaders and stakeholders for the protection of certain MPs.
In a departure from this trend, Mr. Jinapor, at the close of nominations on December 25, 2023, emerged as the sole candidate for the NPP Parliamentary Candidate in Damongo.
This reflects the high confidence the NPP in the constituency places in Mr. Jinapor to retain the seat, despite the traditionally strong NDC presence.
Expressing gratitude for the trust bestowed upon him, Mr. Jinapor affirmed his commitment to collaborating with the party and constituents to secure the NPP’s parliamentary seat and achieve victory for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Constituents lauded Hon. Jinapor for unprecedented development initiatives, including the construction of the MP’s office, an astroturf in Damongo, electricity extension projects, and various infrastructure developments.
Supporters, even from the opposing NDC, expressed confidence in Mr. Jinapor’s ability to continue the constituency’s developmental agenda.
The NPP primaries for MPs are scheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2023. According to the party’s constitution, when only one candidate files for the contest at the close of nominations, that candidate is acclaimed on the day of the election.
As such, Mr. Jinapor is affirmed as the undisputed NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Damongo Constituency, poised to face Adam Mutawakilu once again, whom he defeated in the 2020 General Elections.
In the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries in the Northern region, several incumbent MPs face strong opposition from challengers.
Notable contests include Farouk Aliu Mahama in Yendi and Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul in Bimbilla.
In the Bimbilla constituency, both Farouk and the incumbent MP submitted their nomination forms. Supporters of the MP highlight his unfinished task of eliminating the opposition in the constituency. The Municipal Chief Executive, Abdulai Yaqoub, joins in, urging voters to support the MP to continue his positive contributions to the constituency.
However, some aspirants have raised concerns about the conduct of the primaries, accusing constituency executives of bias and calling for intervention from regional and national executives.
Alhaji Nuhu Razuk, an aspirant in the Bimbilla constituency, accuses constituency executives of bias and calls for intervention from regional and national executives. He raised concerns about pressure on delegates to endorse his opponent’s forms.
Expressing worry about the safety of his submitted forms, Farouk calls for immediate action to address the issues and urges the constituency chairman to uphold neutrality.
The Masloc CEO Hajia Abibata Saani in Yendi has also re-entered the race, emphasizing the need for better representation. Pleading for full support if she emerges victorious, she appeals to her contender and the party, emphasizing her past support for the candidate. She urges delegates to give her a chance.
Meanwhile, the Elections Committee emphasizes the importance of carefully chosen messages, considering it an internal contest. Alhaji Gazali, the constituency chairman for Yendi, addressed the aspirants, emphasizing the need for a fair and transparent process.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has called on delegates in the Ayawaso Central Constituency to vote overwhelmingly for him in the upcoming NPP primaries.
Mr Quartey, a three-time Member of Parliament, is facing competition from Moses Abor, the former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP.
He expressed gratitude to the delegates for their support and for obtaining a form on his behalf, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the seat for the party in the 2024 general elections.
“I decided not to contest again but you said I should go. Today, I thank you again. 2020, you contributed and bought the forms on my behalf and I went unopposed. Today, I was in the office and saw that you’ve made such an offer again. So today I’m here to say I’m back again”.
Speaking to delegates after submitting his nomination form at the Ayawaso Central Constituency office in Alajo, Henry Quartey appealed for their support.
“When you are voting, vote massively for me,” Mr Quartey added.
Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah has issued a caution to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging vigilance to ensure that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not secure victory in the upcoming 2024 elections.
COP Mensah, who recently filed to contest the parliamentary seat in the Bekwai constituency, emphasized that the NPP is the sole political party with the capability to lead the country towards development.
During an interview on Angel TV, he voiced concerns that an NDC victory could result in regression, specifically referencing the period of ‘dumsor,’ the intermittent power outages that plagued Ghana during the NDC’s previous tenure.
“In this country, if we go out and vote, and power is turned over to those that brought ‘dumsor,’ the country will be heading backwards because the only political party that can help the country is the ruling NPP.
“If we make a mistake and hand over power to the NDC, we will go down back deep into a pit, and the time we will come out of that pit, things will be worse,” he warned.
The retired police commissioner has pledged to contribute to the development of the Bekwai constituency.
Five incumbent Members of Parliament in the Ashanti Region have opted out of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27, 2024.
Notable figures such as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Bekwai, Joseph Osei-Wusu, Majority Leader and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, and legislators for the Oforikrom, Ahafo Ano South East, and Kwabre East constituencies did not submit nominations for the primaries.
The Ashanti Region, known for having the highest number of NPP parliamentarians, will witness a substantial number of incumbents vying to retain their seats in the upcoming primaries.
Out of the 47 seats in the region, the NPP holds a majority, with 43 currently under their control. Notably, at the Old Tafo Constituency, there is a contest between Vincent Ekow Assafuah and Dr. Serwaa Donkor, with the latter aiming to become the first female Member of Parliament for the constituency.
Dr. Donkor, having come second in the 2020 primaries, is determined to secure victory this time and serve the people of Old Tafo and Pankrono.
“There are a myriad of problems the people here have. I understand development and leadership and I want to offer to the people of Tafo-Pankrono the leadership skills I have,” she emphasized.
Vincent Frimpong Manu, a three-time contender in NPP parliamentary elections, is vying for the Kwadaso seat in a competitive race against the incumbent MP, Kingsley Nyarko.
“If the incumbent MP had served well, I wouldn’t be contesting him. Many people come here to contest but they’re not true indigenes of Kwadaso. We need a true resident born and bred here to bring us that change the people need. I am the person,” he said.
The Bantama constituency is set for a challenging contest between the incumbent MP, Francis Asenso Boakye, and Raphael Agyapong.
“The people have seen the works I have done in the constituency and they will vote based on that. The person contesting me is no match at all,” Francis Asenso teased.
“I understand people say this will be a real contest between President Akufo-Addo and Kennedy Agyapong. But I know that, at the end of the day I will be crowned the winner,” Raphael Agyapong said.
In the Kwabre East Constituency, five aspirants are vying for the seat following the decision of the incumbent MP, Francisca Oteng Mensah, to withdraw from the race.
Patrick Amoako Kufour expresses optimism about securing victory, facing strong competition from the former organizer and the Municipal Chief Executive of the constituency.
While filing nominations is the initial step, the aspirants must now focus on winning the trust and support of the delegates to secure their parliamentary candidature on January 27, 2024.
Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah has issued a caution to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging vigilance to ensure that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not secure victory in the upcoming 2024 elections.
Mensah, who recently filed to contest the parliamentary seat in the Bekwai constituency, emphasized that the NPP is the sole political party with the capability to lead the country towards development.
Vice President Dr. Bawumia and Sammi Awuku, alongside other prominent figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), made a spirited appearance at the Akwaaba Village in Accra to express their solidarity with Afua Asantewaa Aduonum.
Afua Asantewaa is on a historic mission to break the Guinness World Record for the longest individual singing marathon.
Brandishing Ghana flags, Dr. Bawumia and NPP leaders enthusiastically joined the cheering crowd, showcasing their unwavering support for Afua Asantewaa Aduonum in her ambitious pursuit.
The accomplished broadcast journalist has set an ambitious goal of four days and nine hours, commencing from December 24, aiming to surpass the existing record held by Indian singer Sunil Waghmare. Waghmare’s impressive singing marathon of 105 hours from March 3 to March 7, 2012, sets a formidable benchmark, with his record standing at an impressive 102 hours.
Upon the arrival of Dr. Bawumia and his entourage at the venue, Asantewaa had already been singing for a day, fourteen hours, and fifty-five minutes.
The presence of these eminent figures not only heightens the event’s excitement but also underscores the widespread support for Aduonum’s quest to etch her name into the prestigious Guinness World Records.
Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Abena Osei-Asare has urged for a clean and honorable campaign within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it approaches its parliamentary primaries.
Describing the election as a “family contest,” the Atiwa East lawmaker called on her supporters to avoid both direct and indirect verbal attacks on other aspirants.
She emphasized the importance of running a clean campaign for the party’s success in the 2024 general election.
The governing party will hold its parliamentary primaries across constituencies with sitting MPs on January 27, 2024. This marks the last internal election to select candidates ahead of the general elections.
Osei-Asare, who is highly favored to win the upcoming primaries, stressed the need for all factions to run a clean campaign for the sake of the task ahead for the party in 2024.
“As a family, all factions must recognize that a united front is necessary to confront the task ahead in 2024. I urge you all [my followers] to conduct a clean campaign, avoiding any form of insults,” Osei-Asare stated during a conference meeting on Saturday (23 December).
The conference marked the beginning of Christmas activities in the constituency, an annual tradition where the MP engages with party faithful and residents.
Present at the meeting was the former Eastern Regional Women Organizer of the NPP, Fati, who strongly endorsed the re-election of Abena Osei-Asare as the Member of Parliament for Atiwa East.
Fati emphasized that Osei-Asare’s impeccable track record in the constituency makes her the most suitable candidate to retain the seat for the party in the upcoming parliamentary primaries.
“This is an MP who has resourced majority of constituents and I can attest to that. The massive infrastructure she has initiated are firming up with some completed. I have been serving this party for decades and I know what I am talking about. Abena Osei-Asare is the best candidate to retain this seat.
“I have been chastising most of the sitting MPs regarding infrastructure and I must say you are blessed to have a visionary MP. As you go to and cast your ballots I daresay that it will be politically suicidal for NPP in Atiwa East if she is not retained,” she noted.
The Eastern Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kwame Appiah Kodua, filed his nomination papers on Saturday (December 23) to contest in the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primary in the Fanteakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region.
Mr. Kodua, contesting for the first time, stated that his decision to run for the slot was in response to the demands from the people in the constituency. He asserted that he was the best candidate to help retain the seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) due to his popularity.
His primary concern, if elected, would be to collaborate with various institutions and the government to address the issue of youth unemployment in the constituency.
Mr. Kodua highlighted his track record of helping unemployed youth in the constituency enlist in various security services and pledged to continue these efforts.
Additionally, recognizing agriculture as the primary occupation in the area, he expressed his commitment to exploring ways the government could support those interested in farming in the constituency.
A Board Member of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Dennis Addo, has submitted his nomination to participate in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary primaries for the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency in the Ashanti Region.
The competition includes the incumbent, Emmanuel Agyei Ahwere, and retired Commissioner of the Ghana Police Service, Mr. George Duffuor. Dr. Dennis Addo, undeterred by the challenging contest, expresses confidence in securing the slot and winning the polls.
He emphasized his extensive experience in student politics and connection with the grassroots, positioning himself as a potential savior for the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency.
Dr. Dennis Addo has been an active member of the NPP for 17 years, starting as a member of TESCON, the party’s student wing, during his time at KNUST.
Over the past 15 years, he has actively contributed to party elections through donations of cash, motorbikes, computers, and other logistics.
His notable efforts significantly impacted the record-breaking results in the 2016 elections. Nationally, he played a key role in forming volunteer groups such as P4C, Loyal Ladies, Volta4Change, and Strategic Patriots.
Currently serving as the National Coordination Member of the NPP Medical Team, Dr. Dennis Addo has been a consistent participant in all NPP National congresses for the past 15 years.
Professionally, he served as a medical officer in rural communities, including Donkorkrom Presbyterian Hospital and Kintampo Hospital.
In the public policy space, Dr. Dennis Addo was appointed to the Board of the NHIA by President Akufo-Addo in 2017, tasked with reforming the NHIA to provide Social Health Insurance and Financial Risk Protection for all Ghanaians.
A member of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, he holds a Master’s degree from Harvard University. As a Cheng Fellow at Harvard, Dr. Dennis Addo is spearheading Wala Digital Health, an innovative digital marketplace addressing blood shortages in Africa.
His educational background includes undergraduate and medical degrees from KNUST, postgraduate degrees from the University of California Berkeley, and graduation from the MIT Entrepreneurship Program.
The Member of Parliament for the Bantama constituency in the Ashanti Region, Francis Asenso-Boakye, submitted his nomination form to the Constituency Parliamentary Elections Committee at the Bantama constituency office of the New Patriotic Party on December 23.
In his address to party leadership and delegates, he expressed gratitude for their dedicated support and highlighted achievements in education, infrastructure, welfare, and sports.
Asenso-Boakye emphasized his commitment to the overall well-being of Bantama residents, citing various projects such as school construction, road and bridge development, the Bantama NPP Welfare Fund, and the installation of AstroTurf pitches.
“I have delivered on education, I have delivered on security, delivered on infrastructure, delivered on health, and every sector has seen development since I took office as your MP”, said Asenso-Boakye.
Francis Asenso-Boakye highlighted the importance of community engagement during his submission of the nomination form. He emphasized initiatives such as the MP’s Community Clinic and regular durbars, aiming to foster unity and inclusivity within Bantama.
Asenso-Boakye interacted with community leaders and constituents to gain a firsthand perspective on their challenges and concerns.
Seeking re-election, he positioned the campaign as a collective effort for the continued development and well-being of Bantama, urging constituents to focus on the community’s progress rather than individual interests. Over five hundred party delegates were present at the submission.
Lawyer John Darko, a lecturer at the GIMPA law faculty, has submitted his nomination forms to contest the Suame constituency parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on January 27, 2024.
The Suame constituency is currently represented by the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who has declared that he will not seek re-election in 2024.
John Darko, an indigene of Breman within the Suame constituency, previously contested in the 2016 parliamentary primaries of the NPP, securing the third position.
He was not allowed to contest in the 2020 primaries, enabling the incumbent MP to go unopposed.
John Darko holds an LL.M in Energy, Environmental, and Natural Resources from the University of Houston Law Centre, Texas, where he received scholarships from the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN) and Rocky Mountains Minerals Law Foundation.
He obtained his qualifying certificate in law (QCL) from Ghana School of Law and an LLB from the University of Ghana. With 13 years of experience in natural resources and environmental law, including commercial, advisory, academic, and consultancy roles, Darko has worked on projects worth several million US dollars.
He is also a board member of various organizations in the oil and gas, insurance, finance, and education sectors. John Darko submitted his nomination forms for the Suame constituency parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) within 24 hours of picking them up.
The NPP opened nominations for parliamentary seats held by sitting Members of Parliament on December 20, with the deadline set for December 25, 2023.
The Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, Dr. Alidu Seidu, has dismissed calls for President Akufo-Addo to undertake a government reshuffle.
During an appearance on Joy FM’s Midday News on Friday, December 22, Dr. Seidu expressed the view that while reshuffling is indeed crucial to keep ministers accountable, the timing may not be optimal at the moment.
“I think this call is too late because even if the President does reshuffle now, they will not be able to make time next year to bring anything meaningful that may translate to electoral victory,” the political scientist told Emefa Apawu.
The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, recently urged President Akufo-Addo to contemplate a reshuffle of government appointees as a strategic move to enhance the party’s chances of retaining political power in 2024.
Mr Kodua expressed his concerns during the party’s thanksgiving service on a Friday, emphasizing that the government’s vigor and dedication seem to have waned, affecting productivity levels. He suggested that a reshuffle could potentially revitalize the administration.
Contrarily, Dr. Alidu Seidu, the Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, offered a different perspective. According to him, implementing a reshuffle at this juncture may not yield substantial results, as the limited time remaining in office would hinder the appointed ministers from making a meaningful impact.
“Seven out of eight years? Next year is an election year, a very busy year. It’s going to be about the 2024 election. How to win the election, retain government in power, move around campaigning for the flagbearer and all those things so they won’t even get time.
“That is why it is very important that once you are elected, the first year is always a honeymoon – you have to form your government by appointing people. Second, third, fourth, and fifth years, you have to do a lot. The seventh and eighth year is also an election year,” he explained.
Naada Jinapor, the wife of the current Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primary race in the Kintampo South constituency.
The move was facilitated by a group known as Friends of Lawyer Naada Jinapor, which took charge of collecting nomination forms on her behalf.
The group, led by Nana Akwasi Owusu, passionately advocates for Mrs. Jinapor, asserting that she possesses the qualities necessary to lead the NPP to success in the 2024 general election.
In an interview with Adom News, Mr. Owusu emphasized Mrs. Jinapor’s unique ability to transform the constituency positively, citing her established footprints and track record in the area.
According to him, Mrs. Jinapor’s commitment to hard work and development aligns seamlessly with the party’s vision.
Touting her as a unifier, Mr. Owusu expressed confidence that Mrs. Jinapor would bring peace to the constituency and play a pivotal role in helping the party retain the seat.
Meanwhile, George Bomey, the Chairman of the NPP’s Council of Elders, issued a reminder to all aspirants to submit their documents promptly to meet the December 25 deadline.
He urged them to refrain from engaging in negative campaigning, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a respectful and disturbance-free campaign environment.
As of now, the incumbent MP for the Kintampo South constituency is Alexander Gyan.
However, it remains uncertain whether he will seek re-election, adding an element of anticipation to the upcoming party primaries in the constituency.
A former Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), initially gearing up to contest in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the Tolon Constituency, has officially withdrawn from the race.
Alhaji Akilu Sayibu, who asserted a considerable support base in the Constituency and was anticipated to pose a strong challenge to the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Alhaji Habib Iddrisu, announced his withdrawal to foster unity within the party.
He aims to contribute to the party’s cohesion and enhance the chances of retaining the MP in the 2024 General Elections.
While Alhaji Akilu’s decision disappointed his supporters aspiring to see him as an MP, it has received commendation from some party members.
They believe his choice is beneficial for the party, and given his relatively young age, he stands a better chance of succeeding Alhaji Iddrisu as MP for the Constituency in the future.
Alhaji Akilu has pledged his full support for Habib Iddrisu’s candidacy in the upcoming Parliamentary Elections.
Two months earlier, Alhaji Habib Iddrisu, the incumbent lawmaker, expressed his openness to competition in the NPP primaries in 2024, emphasizing his democratic values.
He encouraged potential contenders to step forward and contest, highlighting his track record of engaging in contested elections throughout his parliamentary career.
Speaking about his achievements in the Tolon constituency, Alhaji Iddrisu emphasized the development strides in various areas and questioned the necessity of introducing a new candidate.
He maintained his willingness to face any competition and reiterated his commitment to parliamentary contests as a student of the political process.
“Until nominations are opened and closed, I am a student in a parliamentary contest. I’ve never gone unopposed. In Sagnarigu, when I was not even there, I contested with three people. In Tolon I contested with five people, including the incumbent, so why would I think I want to go unopposed? Let the person come and contest.
“The question is, what will you come and do that I’m not doing? If anybody wants to come and contest, come and contest,” he questioned on Tamale-based Diamond FM.
A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Owusu Akyaw, has officially filed his nomination to participate in the upcoming parliamentary primaries in the Juaben Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
The campaign team for Owusu Akyaw confirmed this development to dailymailgh.com.
The filing took place on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the NPP’s Juaben office, nearly 24 hours after Owusu Akyaw purchased the necessary nomination forms.
The constituency election committee, chaired by Kwaku Atuahene, received the documents.
A member of Owusu Akyaw’s campaign team expressed satisfaction with the filing process, stating, “Now he awaits the party’s directives ahead of vetting, and I can tell you he is fully prepared this time round.”
There is a growing sentiment for change in the constituency, with many calling for a fresh face that can connect with the delegates and the people of Juaben.
Mr Owusu Akyaw is seen as a candidate who could restore confidence in the constituency and contribute to securing more votes for the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Owusu Akyaw previously attempted to unseat the incumbent MP and Deputy Communications Minister, Ama Pomaa, in 2019. Delegates in the constituency are advocating for a fair and level-playing field for all aspirants in the party’s parliamentary primaries.
Concerned delegates emphasize the importance of equal opportunities for aspirants to make informed decisions, ultimately selecting the best candidate to lead the party and secure victory in the 2024 polls.
“Juaben NPP needs a new brand this time,” said Nicholas Afrifa. “What happened in 2019 should not repeat itself. Delegates should be given the opportunity to select their preferred candidate as we push to break the eight.”
With the NPP opening nominations for constituencies with sitting Members of Parliament, the parliamentary primaries in these constituencies are scheduled for January 27, 2024.
Deputy General Secretary, Prof. Haruna Mohammed, assured that necessary steps have been taken, with forms ready for distribution, and the announcement of vetting committees is expected after the submission of forms on December 25.
Five individuals have taken up nominations to challenge the incumbent Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi.
The aspirants include Kwasi Kwarteng Frimpong, the PRO for the Ministry of Education; Dr. Samuel Kwadwo Frimpong from the Office of the Vice President; seasoned businessman Stephen Obeng Saka; and the former MP and CEO for the Accra Digital Centre, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang.
The aspirants presented their visions for the constituency while picking up their nomination forms.
“We have five people who want to contest for the seat in Asante Akyem and it includes the incumbent MP Andy Appiah Kube.
“The aspirants have all come with their messages and vision apart from the sitting MP. Basically, they are all talking about education, health, and other infrastructure. The various individuals have said that they have built networks they can utilise to bring development into the constituency,” he said.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Elections Committee in the Asante Akyem North constituency pointed out some of the challenges facing the area, emphasizing the necessity for infrastructure upgrades in schools and improved housing for teachers to enhance the quality of education in the constituency.
“We have very bad roads in this constituency and also getting jobs is very difficult. So, we need them to help us in that regard. They can bring in the government’s one district one factory to this constituency.
Also, we have some challenges in our education sector. Most of the school buildings are not in very good shape. Places to accommodate the teachers is also a challenge we are dealing with. So we struggle retaining teachers in this area,” he added.
An aspirant in the NPP parliamentary primary for the Manso Nkwanta Constituency, Frederick Kwadwo Nkansah, has attributed the reduced support for the NPP in the area to the neglect of development projects.
He highlighted the inadequate attention given to bad roads in Manso, which has contributed to people’s disinterest. Mr Nkansah expressed the need for Manso Nkwanta to experience improved road infrastructure to enhance the NPP’s appeal in the region.
“Some time ago, the NPP was very powerful in our town because people liked the party, but now they don’t because our own town lacks development, they feel the party isn’t doing much for us,” he said.
Frederick Kwadwo Nkansah, also known as Yentumi, expressed his belief that he is the suitable candidate to lead the NPP in the Manso Nkwanta Constituency and bring about development in the area.
“I will help to complete the developmental works that has delayed in our town,” he said.
Mr. Nkansah said the NPP will unite to garner more votes in the area in December 2024 if he is given the mandate.
“The party delegates, elders in the party, and I will join forces to make our party stronger and move it forward”.
Owusu Mensah, the NPP Constituency Chairman for Manso Nkwanta, revealed that five individuals have picked forms to contest the primary in the constituency.
“The problem isn’t the candidates, but their followers. They should behave decently, We’re all in this together, and once it’s over, we’ll return to our normal lives. So they shouldn’t insult or try to start fights”, he said.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has outlined the party’s commitment to achieving robust economic recovery in 2024.
Addressing NPP supporters at a Thanksgiving service in Accra on December 22, 2023, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the economic challenges faced by Ghana in 2022 and 2023 and emphasized that the government has devised stringent policies to rejuvenate the economy in the coming year.
In a Twitter post by JoyNews, Dr. Bawumia declared, “We are rolling up our sleeves to get to work. After turning the corner, we are set to move with full speed towards greater recovery in 2024.”
Expressing gratitude to party members for their support in the 2024 general elections, Dr. Bawumia stressed the importance of unity within the party.
He urged members to unite as it is the key to overcoming challenges and achieving success, stating, “Indeed, it is only in unity and purpose that we can achieve our goal of winning the general election next year. I am confident that with hard work, unity, and full commitment, it will be possible to break the eight and to continue to solve the problems we face as a country”.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has officially entered the race for the Ayawaso Central Constituency seat in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.
The three-term Member of Parliament and incumbent Greater Accra Regional Minister is set to face stiff competition from Moses Abor, the former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP.
Bennett Larbi, serving as the spokesperson for a group of polling station executives, made a resounding statement about Quartey’s exceptional achievements in the Ayawaso Central Constituency.
According to Larbi, Quartey’s impressive track record includes the unprecedented asphalting of major roads in the constituency.
This infrastructural development has left an indelible mark on the area, reflecting Quartey’s commitment to improving the lives of the constituents.
Mr Larbi expressed the executives’ strong conviction that Quartey has not only met but exceeded the expectations of the constituents.
In recognition of his outstanding service, Larbi stated that the polling station executives took the initiative to pick up Henry Quartey’s nomination forms on his behalf.
The move is symbolic of the widespread support and endorsement Quartey enjoys from within the party’s grassroots.
Furthermore, Larbi emphasized that Quartey’s transformative leadership has set a precedent, with the infrastructural development positively impacting the daily lives of the constituents.
The asphalting of major roads stands out as a tangible manifestation of Mr Quartey’s dedication to addressing the critical needs of the Ayawaso Central Constituency.
“We decided to come and pick Honourable Henry Quartey’s form for him because he has done a massive job. It is unprecedented. If you come to the constituency, all the major roads are now asphalted… We have never experienced what Honourable Henry Quartey has done before.”
“So we think he deserves to be given more chance, that is why the polling station executives will not allow him to come and pick the forms; we have done that for him. We are waiting for when the time comes; the filing fee too, we will pay… He has done a good job. No regional minister has done that before,” he stated.
The Minority in Parliament has demanded the immediate resignation of Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, following his decision to contest the parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Kwaning-Bosompem, who has picked nomination forms to vie for the NPP’s Akim Swedru Constituency seat, faces opposition from the incumbent MP, Kennedy Nyarko Osei.
Expressing their displeasure, Murtala Muhammed, the MP for Tamale Central constituency, highlighted the incompatibility of holding a public office while actively participating in partisan politics.
He urged Kwaning-Bosompem to resign and called for a thorough investigation into the matter, expressing concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
“My expectation was that by now, the Office of the Special Prosecutor would have commenced some investigation into this matter. If indeed he had some delegates in his constituency on a payroll, how was he paying them?
“I think that it ought to be looked at, particularly the critical role he plays as far as the accounting and finances of this country are concerned. The salary of every public officer is managed and controlled by him and the extent to which he ought to distance himself from politics,” he said.
Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, the MP for South Dayi constituency, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that as the Accountant General, Kwaning-Bosompem should step down if engaging in partisan politics.
He cited constitutional provisions preventing public servants from participating in such activities.
“If the man is failing to do so, I believe the President would have asked him to resign. It simply doesn’t make sense. So I will support the call that he should resign if he wants to contest an election and I would urge the Office of the Special Prosecutor to commence an investigation into this matter.
“You are the Accountant General of the Republic of Ghana, if you decide to engage in partisan politics, then you need to exit from office because the constitution is not saying don’t engage in politics, but it says that if you are a public servant, don’t engage in partisan politics,” he said.
Both MPs stressed the importance of maintaining non-partisan and non-political alignment in public service roles.
They called on Kwaning-Bosompem to voluntarily relinquish his position to uphold the integrity of the office.
A member of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Team, Kofi Amponsah, has expressed his concerns about what he perceives as widespread greed among the party’s top leadership.
Amponsah highlighted that many leaders within the NPP have succumbed to greed, prioritizing their selfish interests over the welfare of loyal party members who have tirelessly supported and dedicated themselves to the party.
In a candid interview on NET2 TV’s Dialogdue, when asked about the greed among NPP leaders, Amponsah candidly replied, “NPP leaders are greedy. Majority of them not some of them; NPP members are very greedy. Honestly, it is a party that we don’t want to say certain matters in public but some need to be told.
He expressed his disappointment, noting that while there are a few exceptions like MP Seyram Alhassan and Honourable Ken, who prioritize the well-being of others, the majority exhibit selfish tendencies.
“The majority are very wicked. The likes of my MP, Seyram Alhassan and Honourable Ken who will sacrifice their own to make you happy are a few. Those people are very few in the NPP but 95% [are greedy]… sometimes you are compelled to feel regret for going round and campaigning for the NPP,” he stated.
Mr Amponsah lamented that approximately 95% of NPP members are characterized by greed, making it challenging to campaign for the party with enthusiasm.
He cited concerns about the state of the economy, the neglect of grassroots members by party leaders, and the choice of the presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 elections as factors contributing to a challenging campaign.
Despite his criticisms, Amponsah maintained that the NPP, despite its flaws, remains a more viable option for governance compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress and its presidential candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama.
According to him, all who feel they are no longer capable of handling the task assigned to them should quickly quit their jobs for more competent individuals to be appointed.
“If you are tired, resign and leave so the party can retain power,” he said in his address at the party’s annual Thanksgiving service held at the party headquarters.
“If you are a Minister, a CEO or an MMDCE and you have not been reshuffled and you think you are tired, resign, don’t sabotage the party,” he added.
He has also called on President Akufo-Addo to swiftly undertake a reshuffle of his government.
In his plea to the President, Mr Koduah emphasized the need for changes within the government, stating, “It is time for some changes in the government so we get some new faces to continue. We believe that if we get new appointments, we will be able to retain power in the next election.”
The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Koduah, has urged President Akufo-Addo to promptly initiate a comprehensive reshuffling of his government.
Speaking passionately at the party’s annual Thanksgiving service held at the party headquarters, Koduah emphasized the critical need for the appointment of fresh faces to invigorate the NPP and ensure the achievement of its objectives.
Expressing his deep concern regarding the conduct of certain government appointees, whose actions are perceived to be negatively affecting the party’s popularity, Koduah firmly asserted, “If you are tired, resign and leave so the party can retain power.”
He specifically addressed Ministers, CEOs, and MMDCEs, urging those who feel fatigued and have not been subjected to a reshuffle to consider resigning instead of undermining the party’s overall progress.
Mr Koduah underscored the importance of making timely changes within the government structure, stating, “It is time for some changes in the government so we get some new faces to continue. We believe that if we get new appointments, we will be able to retain power in the next election.”
The NPP General Secretary’s plea to President Akufo-Addo is not just a call for a routine reshuffle but a strategic move to inject new energy and perspectives into the government.
The objective is to enhance the party’s appeal, address any perceived fatigue among current appointees, and position the NPP favorably for success in the upcoming election.
In addition to the call for resignations from those feeling tired and stagnant, Koduah stressed the urgency of President Akufo-Addo’s intervention to ensure a seamless transition and the infusion of fresh talent into key positions.
The party’s focus is not only on retaining power but also on fostering a government that reflects dynamism, responsiveness, and a commitment to the aspirations of the Ghanaian people.
As the NPP gears up for the next election, Koduah’s appeal serves as a rallying cry for a proactive and strategic approach to government reshuffling. The party envisions a revitalized leadership that can effectively navigate the evolving political landscape and secure electoral victory.
