Sewua and Afari hospitals in Ashanti Region to be unveiled by August – Bawumia

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has voiced concerns about the delayed completion of major health facilities in the Ashanti Region.

He attributed the current congestion and strain on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to these delays.

Highlighting the 500-bed Afari Military Hospital and the 250-bed Sewua Hospital as pivotal projects, the GMA emphasized that their completion would ease the burden on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, a crucial referral center serving 12 regions.

Critiquing the government’s prioritization of Agenda 111 hospitals over the refurbishment of the referral hospital, the GMA noted fundraising efforts by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the latter.

Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, suggested reallocating resources from Agenda 111 projects to refurbish the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, addressing inefficiencies.

During discussions with Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Baidoo proposed redirecting resources from 10 Agenda 111 hospitals to retool the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

In response, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the congestion issue and assured that the Afari and Sewua hospitals would soon be operational, with Sewua expected to be commissioned by July 2024 and Afari by August 2024.

“With the overcrowding that we are seeing at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, I agree with the suggestion to dedicate resources to retooling the hospital.

“And with particular reference to the two hospitals that are almost done, Sewua which is a regional hospital, and Afari which is a military hospital, we expect Sewua to be commissioned hopefully by July [2024] and commission Afari in August [2024] as well.”

This is why no one but Otumfuo wears 3 golden triangular necklaces during durbars

At the grand durbar commemorating his 25th anniversary on Sunday, May 12, 2024, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, bedecked himself with three golden triangular necklaces known as “Adaaboɔ.”

During a live telecast on GTV, a historian, Nana Frimpong, shed light on the significance of Otumfuo‘s necklaces. He likened the Adaaboɔ to medals bestowed upon soldiers for their bravery in war.

Nana Frimpong elaborated that, within Asante tradition, the Adaaboɔ necklace is exclusively reserved for chiefs who have achieved remarkable feats for the kingdoms, either personally or through their lineage.

He emphasized that this adornment is deeply rooted in Asante customs, where the attire of chiefs at traditional events mirrors the hierarchical structure of the kingdom.

Furthermore, he explained that, similar to military services where ranks dictate attire, a chief’s rank determines the adornments they are entitled to wear at such durbars.

“The necklace is a triangle, originating from ancient Israel and Egypt. The Amanhene, paramount chiefs wear one, while the Abrempong, other royals do not.

“However, the Otumfuo is entitled to wear up to three. The Abrempong, though royals, cannot don the Adaaboɔ because the hierarchical order does not permit them. It is exclusively the Amanhene who may wear one, and the Asantehene, up to three,” he explained.

“These ornaments are akin to medals given to soldiers who have distinguished themselves in war. Your rank determines the medal you are entitled to wear. This is similar to the ‘ahenema’ the sandals that they wear.

“That is why you see some of the chiefs in golden sandals. Not every chief has the privilege to adorn themselves in gold from head to toe,” he said.

As the 16th ruler to ascend the esteemed Golden Stool, he emphasized the urgent necessity to combat galamsey through all available means.

His discourse conveyed a profound sense of duty, urging the present generation to respect and safeguard the environmental legacy passed down by their ancestors.

“Our top priority must be the reclamation of our environment from the ravages of galamsey. We cannot be the generation that destroys the most gracious heritage bequeathed to us by our forefathers to satisfy the greed of a few miscreants. For whatever it takes we must defeat this scourge,” he said.

In addition to environmental concerns, Asantehene also articulated a vision for economic rejuvenation, highlighting the need to nurture Ghana’s economy and empower its entrepreneurs.

He recognized the interdependent relationship between environmental preservation and economic prosperity, advocating for initiatives that promote sustainable development.

As the country stands on the brink of electoral processes, Asantehene’s guidance extended to matters of civic responsibility, warning against actions that could undermine the integrity of the democratic system.

His appeals reflect a profound commitment to principles of good governance and the collective welfare of Ghanaians.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s intervention serves as a rallying cry for unity against galamsey, urging action for environmental recovery, economic resilience, and political stability.

When we were young, we used to say in Hausa, ‘for the sake of God, truthfully, everybody likes good things.’ I am saying this because everyone knows that we the Ashantis love people.”

The Asantehene initiated his anniversary festivities with the unveiling of a book on Otumfuo Sir Agyeman Prempeh II, followed by a grand food fair (Feast Ghana) held at Manhyia.

However, some attendees were observed with party-related items, leading the organizing committee to discourage such conduct for future events.

On April 24, the ‘Ahohor Durbar’ celebrated, drawing visitors from across the globe to pay homage to the Asantehene, coinciding with Awukudae, a significant event in Asante culture.

Upcoming events include the ‘Fireworks Night’ scheduled for Thursday, April 25, 2024, followed by a musical concert and a grand non-denominational church service at Dwabrem on Friday, April 26, marking the exact anniversary of the Asantehene’s ascension to the throne 25 years ago.

My sense of judgment has never been influenced by money – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

During his 74th birthday thanksgiving service in Kumasi as part of the festivities marking his 25th anniversary celebrations, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, reaffirmed the oath he took 25 years ago before the Asanteman Council in church.

Expressing gratitude in church, Otumfuo praised God for safeguarding his life and his family since his enstoolment as the overlord of the revered Ashanti Kingdom a quarter-century ago.

“In the last 25 years, I have gone through a lot in the country. A lot has been said about me, but I was not worried about anything they said because my focus has always been on speaking the truth to promote fairness in the country. I have always been thankful to God for bestowing wisdom on me for fair judgment in any case that came before me for a peaceful resolution.

“It has always been my prayer before God that I may not discriminate against any individual across the country. I pray for God’s wisdom that comes with integrity and fairness to promote national peace and co-existence in all my dealings with people in the interest of Asanteman and Ghana.

“At where the Lord has placed me, the golden stool takes care of me, so I don’t need your money before I can make a reasonable, fair judgment before handling issues under my control to promote peace and unity. No known individual in my 25-year reign as the Asantehene can dare say I have taken money from them before passing judgment in their favor on any dispute brought before me. No one in the world can say that against me; you can’t dare come before me to bribe me for that. I’m saying all this to the glory of God,” he said.

“I’m saying all this to seek more years and blessings from God to lead me to do more for Asanteman and Ghana in general in the years ahead of me. All that I’m praying for is wisdom, a sense of bravery, and the spirit of what I can do for God,” he added.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged Ghanaians to unite in safeguarding the nation’s peace and unity for its progress.

“I will do my part through God, who strengthens me. It therefore behooves you to unite to play your part as well. I would like to use this opportunity to thank each one of you here who came to support me in this Thanksgiving service. Your presence here demonstrates your love and commitment to me.

“I’m reiterating the Asante oath that I took 25 years ago, and I continue to be honest, truthful, and just to you all at all times. I thank you all,” he said.

The service was attended by dignitaries including Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Asante Mamponhene, Asante Juaben Manhene Dasebere Otuo Serebour (who also serves as the Council of State Chairman), Alan Kyerematen, leader and founder of Movement for Change, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah, and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, among others.

National Cathedral: Otumfuo solely built Jubilee Hall; Akufo-Addo used public fund to dig expensive hole – A Plus

Entertainment personality turned politician, Kwame Obeng Asare, also known as A Plus, commended Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for spearheading a remarkable infrastructural project in his jurisdiction.

A Plus expressed admiration for the Asantehene’s initiative in solely funding the impressive construction endeavour, which promises to bolster economic development in the region.

However, A Plus criticised the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for its perceived failure to complete the National Cathedral project despite seeking financial contributions from the public.

During an appearance on United Showbiz on UTV, A Plus voiced his discontent with the state of the National Cathedral project and accused the government of undermining the trust of Ghanaians.

“Look at what Otumfuo alone has built [Jubilee Hall]… Due to bad mindset, we have invested money in digging the biggest hole in the world with the National Cathedral project. Aren’t they [politicians] ashamed when they see the building? They have taken huge sums of money from the public to build the cathedral, but they haven’t yet been able to. Look at what Otumfuo alone has done.

“This sends a signal to the government that the cathedral project has not been taken seriously. We are hoping that very soon it [Otumfuo’s Jubilee Hall] will be opened for public access. I’m happy with the fact that Otumfuo funded this project,” he told the show host, MzGee.

Diversify operations within GRIDCo, ECG, and VRA – Otumfuo to government

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the Akufo-Addo government to acknowledge the realities of the economic landscape.

He emphasized the importance of government giving precedence to policies that cultivate industrial growth, thereby facilitating job creation and attracting more investment.

He has recommended diversifying public enterprises like the Volta River Authority (VRA), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) by involving the private sector to ensure crucial financial investments.

These statements were made during the commissioning of a 430-kilometre natural gas pipeline by Genser Energy, aimed at bolstering the nation’s power sector.

Otumfuo emphasized the necessity for the government to involve the private sector in setting up companies to attract more investors and create employment opportunities.

Otumfuo stressed the importance of relinquishing control of industries that the government cannot adequately maintain or run, especially amidst financial constraints.

Otumfuo gets new traditional bodyguard, Nana Kwame Amo

During a traditional ceremony at the Manhyia Palace, Nana Kwame Amo was appointed as the new Otumfuo Tromoo Akwasi Hene, the esteemed traditional bodyguard of the Asantehene.

Formerly known as Sledge Bonnah in private life, Nana Kwame Amo now assumes a pivotal role deeply rooted in Asante history.

The position of Otumfuo Tromoo Akwasi Hene, dating back to the inception of the Asante kingdom, carries immense cultural and symbolic importance.

Central to this role is the Tromoo Akwasi gun, named after the myth surrounding the trɔmo, carefully chosen by Otumfoɔ Opoku Ware II as the abɔsodeɛ (foundation) for this revered firearm. Unique to the Tromoo Akwasi gun is the use of abadayɛ, the foetus of trɔmo, for its ntoa, symbolizing the intricate connection between Asante traditions and spiritual significance embedded within their regalia.

During ceremonial processions, the gun-bearers meticulously carry their firearms, demonstrating respect and adherence to ceremonial protocols. Notably, during the “trane” ritual, where a newly enstooled king affirms his readiness to defend Asanteman, the doku agyapɔmaa (gun) is fired three times, symbolizing a profound commitment to protect the kingdom.

Nana Kwame Amo’s lineage adds historical depth to his appointment. His late grandfather, who previously held this esteemed position, was not only the Asantehene’s father but also the elder brother of Otumfuo’s father, underscoring the traditional practices surrounding succession within the Asante kingdom.

Before officially assuming his role, Nana Kwame Amo underwent the sacred “som kahyire” rite at the revered “Akrafie so” within the Manhyia Palace. This private ritual, conducted by the Asantehene himself, served to educate Nana Kwame Amo about the potent powers and responsibilities associated with the Tromoo Akwasi regalia.

Beyond his ceremonial duties, Nana Kwame Amo upholds dietary restrictions akin to those of the Asantehene, further solidifying his commitment to preserving and honoring Asante traditions in all aspects of his life.

  • I am still Offinso Queenmother – Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko snubs Otumfuo’s destoolment order

I am still Offinso Queenmother – Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko snubs Otumfuo’s destoolment order

Wife of Offinso Manhene, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, who was destooled by the Asantehene, Otumfo Osei Tutu II, has defiantly declared that she is remains the queenmother.

This is contained in a letter purportedly issued by Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko to the Asantehene.

The letter indicated that Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko has also selected Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong as the Paramount Chief of the Offinso Traditional Area.

“I, Nana Serwa Nyakoh, Offinso Manhemaa write to notify your high office that in line with Asante custom and pursuant to the Chieftaincy Act 2008 (Act 759), I have nominated Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong as Paramount Chief of the Offinso Traditional Area. In accordance with custom, all kings makers have approved my nomination and have accepted customary aseda. Accordingly, Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong is the selected Paramount Chief of the Offinso Traditional Area.

“In view of the above, and in line with powers invested in me the Queenmother, and the kingmakers no person has been selected as the paramount chief of the Offinso Traditional Area,” parts of the release added.

On Thursday, January 11, 2024, Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, assigned a crucial task to the recently installed Offinsomanhene, Nana Dwamena Akenten II.

He charged Nana Dwamena Akenten II with the responsibility of seeking a suitable replacement for Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, the incumbent Queen Mother of Offinso.

In his directive, Asantehene emphasized the importance of selecting a candidate capable of fostering smooth collaboration with the newly enstooled Omanhene.

The chosen candidate should demonstrate a willingness to cooperate and promptly respond to summons from the Manhyia Palace, without presenting unfounded excuses.

Traditionally, the presence of an Ohemaa (queenmother) alongside the Manhene is crucial for the smooth functioning of the chieftaincy system.

However, with the destoolment of the queenmother, Offinso finds itself without an Ohemaa.

Named “Kuntunkuni,” the commemorative durbar carried a distinctive tone, with the Asantehene and select traditional rulers clad in all-black attire, symbolizing the gravity of the historical event.

Distinguished political figures, including the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama; the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; and the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, graced the occasion.

Social media shared visuals of the durbar, capturing the vibrant display of Akan tradition and cultural heritage showcased during the event.

The arrival of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, marked a pinnacle moment, bringing the durbar to a temporary standstill. His regal entrance, on a palanquin amidst spirited singing, drumming, and dancing, captivated the audience.

Edwesohemaa, Nana Yaa Asantewaa II, added to the spectacle with her entrance, arriving in a palanquin and firing into the sky.

The presence of the executioners of Asanteman (abrafoɔ) in their ancestral garb, one holding a decapitated fowl in a symbolic gesture, contributed to the visual richness of the event.

Notably, the durbar featured the formal presentation of Ashanti artifacts, including a royal stool belonging to Asantehene Kofi Karikari, the 10th Asantehene.

This presentation underscored the historical and cultural significance of the occasion, further cementing the link between past and present in the Ashanti Kingdom.

So far as the Golden Stool remains, no one can touch Asanteman – Otumfuo

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has emphatically stated that any conspiracy against the Ashanti Kingdom, whether from the government, politicians, or other tribes in Ghana, will ultimately meet failure.

This resolute declaration took place during a durbar on Thursday, February 8, 2024, concluding the 150 years celebration of the Sagranti War, known as the Kuntunkuni festival, held in Manhyia.

Otumfuo, in his address, called for national unity and emphasized the crucial role of fostering peace for the growth of the entire nation. He traced the historical evolution of the Ashanti Kingdom from a distinct entity to an integral part of the Gold Coast, now governed by Ghana’s 1992 constitution.

Expressing concern about perceived hostility towards the Ashanti people, Otumfuo questioned the foundation of any anti-Ashanti sentiments.

He reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to living within the legal framework of the country and urged an end to divisive schemes.

In commemorating the resilience of Asanteman, Otumfuo highlighted the Golden Stool as the symbolic soul of the Kingdom, emphasizing its indestructibility.

Recalling the historical significance of the Sagrenti War of 1874, he emphasized how the Golden Stool withstood challenges, solidifying Asanteman’s invincibility.

“Asante is alive. 150 years ago, the whites destroyed this city, but the Golden Stool remained. Various kinds of guns came to Kumasi, but the Golden Stool remained untouched. So far as the Golden Stool remains, no one can touch Asanteman. It is the soul of Asanteman and Nananom used their blood to protect it.”

“You will be overcome if you decide to take out Asante. All those who plot against the kingdom must stop. We live here in love…Politicians must know that power is transient. Use love to rule. If you rely on your power, remember that your time will end soon.”

“The Zongos are on our land, we live in peace. Ewes are here and we have Anloga here as well as Fantes New Town for Fantes. Why is our love being reciprocated with hatred? Let’s be united. All political parties must know that without Asante, Ghana cannot stand. We are not above anyone; we are equals but I won’t allow anyone to cheat us.”

  • No attack against the Ashanti Kingdom will work – Otumfuo

No attack against the Ashanti Kingdom will work – Otumfuo

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has staunchly asserted that no endeavor aimed at sidelining or disparaging the Asante Kingdom will prevail.

He emphasizes the enduring resilience of the kingdom, which has withstood the trials of time, including two unwarranted British-led wars in antiquity aimed at eradicating it.

During a gathering at the Manhyia Palace, marked by both somber reflection and hopeful reunion, Asante chiefs, led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, expressed a resolute spirit.

This occasion, dubbed ‘Kuntukuni Thursday,’ saw chiefs from across Ghana donning black attire in solemn remembrance of the devastation inflicted upon the Asante Kingdom during the Sagrenti War.

Recalling the historical aggression, wherein the British Army, under Major-General Garnet Wosely’s command, launched a brutal assault on Asante, laying waste to its capital, Kumasi, and plundering its treasures, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II acknowledged the sacrifices made by Asante warriors, including the loss of thousands of lives, including prominent leaders like Bantamahene Baffuor Amankwatia.

Despite echoes of past conflict reverberating through the air, the day also marked a symbolic return, as seven looted artefacts were repatriated from the Fowler Museum at the University of California, USA.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, presiding over the ceremony, called for unity amongst Asantes and highlighted the kingdom’s indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.

Asserting the preeminence of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II underscored its longstanding existence predating the formation of Ghana and its unparalleled influence in Ghanaian politics and beyond.

He issued a rallying cry to uphold the legacy of valor and resilience passed down by ancestors, urging the youth to eschew vices like drug abuse.

Additionally, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II announced ongoing efforts to secure the repatriation of 32 artefacts currently housed in the British Museum, signaling a continued commitment to reclaiming the cultural heritage of the Asante people.

  • I’ve successfully restored Asante’s soul and spirit – Otumfuo

I’ve successfully restored Asante’s soul and spirit – Otumfuo

Ashanti overlord Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has declared that he has restored the spirit and soul of Ashanti by receiving artefacts looted from Kumasi approximately 150 years ago at the Manhyia Palace.

Seven golden artefacts, taken from Kumasi in 1874, were traced to the Fowler Museum in California, United States.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II successfully secured the artefacts after numerous unsuccessful attempts by his predecessors, including Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II.

A durbar of chiefs was organized at the Manhyia Palace to unveil the artefacts and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War, which occurred in 1874.

This event marks the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s ascension to the Golden Stool.

“When we came here, Otumfuo, His Royal Majesty and I will quote him. He said that he has been able to return our (Asante) soul to its original place. “

“The items are still items that have spiritual relevance to us. They are still active; they  would be activated and they would be used.”

Professor Kwasi Ampene of the Department of Music at Tufts University in Massachusetts, United States, facilitated the return of the artefacts.

In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, Professor Ampene stated that the Asantehene is delighted with the return of the pure gold artefacts, considering them a restoration of the Asante soul to its original place.

According to Professor Ampene, a member of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences who extensively studied Asante culture, the items hold spiritual significance for the Asante Kingdom and will be actively used.

The artefacts include Asipim chairs made of silver, Sika Amena necklaces, armbands, and anklets – all crafted from pure gold.

Another set of artefacts is expected from the British Museum in April this year and will be unveiled on May 12, 2024, during the Akwasidae Festival celebrations.

Professor Ampene commended Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for initiating the return and acknowledged Opemsuo Osei Tutu Ababio for his efforts in empowering the facilitation process.

Ivor Agyemang Duah, the Technical Advisor to the project, informed Joy News that the artefacts will be accessible to the general public at the Manhyia Palace Museum once the museum undergoes rehabilitation.

I have personally offered an apology on Asempa FM,” he added.

He urged his critics to refrain from further criticism, emphasizing that he has already taken the necessary steps to address the situation.

The Kumasi Traditional Council issued a one-week ultimatum to the NPP leadership to present Chairman Wontumi, also known as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, before the Manhyia Palace.

This directive follows alleged derogatory remarks made by Chairman Wontumi about the Asantehene approximately two weeks ago.

Chairman Wontumi was expected to appear alongside Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, who is similarly accused of making derogatory statements on radio.

The lawyer strongly criticized the chiefs of the Ashanti Kingdom for summoning Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

During an appearance on the ‘Mmra ne Abrabo’ show on Wontumi TV, the lawyer accused the chiefs of engaging in questionable activities such as theft and girlfriend snatching.

He contended that these chiefs are unworthy of discussing Chairman Wontumi, citing allegations of multiple land sales among them.

As of now, Chairman Wontumi together with some officials from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) honored the summons from the chiefs.

Maurice Ampaw snubs Kumasi Traditional Council

Lawyer and TV show host of ‘Mmra Ne Abrabo Mu Nsem’ on Wontumi TV, Maurice Ampaw, has ignored the summons of the Kumasi Traditional Council, following his ‘disrespectful’ comments about the head of the Ashanti Kingdom, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

A few days after reports of Chairman Wontumi’s derogatory remarks about Otumfuo surfaced, Maurice Ampaw was reported to have slammed the Ashanti overload for his alleged meddling in the affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, the Asantehene was not above the laws of the country.

These comments didn’t sit well with the traditional leaders of the Ashanti kingdom; hence, during a visit to Manhyia on January 23, 2024, by a delegation led by the NPP’s general secretary, Justin Koduah, the elders demanded the presence of both Chairman Wontumi, Maurice Ampaw and the entire management of the Wontumi Media.

“When you come to Asanteman, we have only one head, and that is the Asantehene, so if you disrespect him, we wouldn’t let you go scot-free. So advise your members, ministers and all others to watch themselves when it comes to Asanteman.

So, General Secretary, go and advise Wontumi, at the latest by Monday, that no matter what, he should appear before us here, and when he is coming, he should come with Maurice Ampaw and the entire management of Wontumi.

And also, they should come and explain why Maurice Ampaw is just slamming the Asantehene and his entourage and why Wontumi’s media house has given him that platform to say all the things he says on his show,” one of the elders told the NPP delegates.

Wontumi honoured the invitation after his recovery from his reported illness today, January 29, 2024 but Maurice Ampaw was missing.

Ahead of Wontumi’s appearance before the Traditional Council , the lawyer and TV host mentioned that he will not honour the invitation of the elders, saying that he felt insulted and prejudged by some of the chiefs; hence, he will not step a foot at the Manhyia Palace.

Also, he believes he said nothing disrespectful or disrespected Otumfuo in any way but only expressed his opinion as a citizen.

Don’t ever mention kingdom in your speech again – Wontumi warned

Kumasi Traditional Council has warned the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi to desist from mentioning the word kingdom in his language , wherever he finds himself speaking.

“I kindly request that you speak positively about the Asantehene whenever you discuss him. If you need to mention him, please do so for a good reason. As you know, the Asantehene is the only king with a kingdom in Ghana, specifically in the Ashanti region.

Therefore, my advice is to avoid using the term ‘kingdom’ in your language whenever you speak,” a member of the traditional council warned Wontumi.

This comes after Chairman Wontumi appeared before the Kumasi Traditional Council, i.e., the second-highest decision-making body within the Asante Kingdom, after being summoned for allegedly making some derogatory remarks about the Asantehene during the vetting of parliamentary aspirants in Manhyia South, a constituency in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

Let’s ensure Wontumi appears before Manhyia Palace as soon as possible – Communications member tells party

In the midst of escalating controversy surrounding alleged derogatory remarks made by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, prominent party member Eric Amoako Twum has called for decisive action.

During an appearance on TV3, the party’s communications team member emphasized the need for the NPP to swiftly and proactively take measures to ensure Chairman Wontumi’s prompt appearance before the Manhyia Palace.

He believes that appearing before the Kumasi Traditional Council is a fair invitation as that will give him the opportunity to present his side of his story.

Additionally, Mr. Amoako advised Chairman Wontumi to recognize his role as a prince, emphasizing that he should exercise better judgment in matters concerning chieftaincy and the traditional council.

“People are not too happy with the way sometimes Chairman Wontumi acts and I told you he is a prince and so as lawyer Ayariga said, as a prince he should know better when it comes to matters of the chieftaincy and the traditional council and so that is why I say he should move he can’t make it this Thursday.

“I think it is a fair invitation and we should do everything as a part to encourage Chairman Wontumi to appear before Manhyia palace. Let’s make sure to get him to the council and then state his position. Nobody is saying that Samanhene is lying and I don’t think Chairman Wontumi himself is, you know I mean he disagrees with the content of what he is alleged to have said. So he came and told us. Whoever who heard it didn’t hear it well and whoever saw it couldn’t interpret it properly,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi is currently facing accusations of making disrespectful comments about the Asantehene.

Allegedly, Nana Kwaku Duah, Chief of Kokoso, and Manhyia South NPP Constituency Chairman Ofori Attah, also known as Tom-Tom, officially filed a complaint with the Kumasi Traditional Council.

In response to the complaint, the council summoned Bernard Antwi Boasiako on January 22, urging him to appear on Monday, January 29, to address questions related to the reported derogatory remarks made during the vetting of parliamentary aspirants in Manhyia South.

The NPP General Secretary conveyed that Chairman Wontumi is currently unwell and requested a two-week grace period for his appearance.

This request has caused discontent among council members, who insist on Chairman Wontumi’s appearance, even suggesting that he appears in a wheelchair if necessary.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has vehemently denied allegations of making derogatory remarks about the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asante Kingdom.

Chairman Wontumi emphasized his profound respect for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, asserting that he would never use abusive language towards the revered king or challenge his authority.

In an interview with Wontumi radio, the businessman urged Ghanaians to dismiss all accusations against him, highlighting that everyone in Asanteman can testify to his respectful demeanor.

He further declared his commitment to taking every necessary step to clear his name from all the allegations made against him.

“All people in Asanteman will attest to the fact that I am a respectful being. Even those who dislike me will affirm that. I have a lot of respect for the Asantehene and the Asante Kingdom and will never do anything to tarnish its reputation. All these allegations are not true; they are pure lies. I cannot engage in such behavior. Anyone who wishes to lie can do so, but eventually, the truth will be exposed. I, Wontumi, will do everything possible to exonerate myself. Video: NPP’s meeting with Kumasi Traditional Council over Wontumi’s alleged derogatory remarks to Otumfuo

On Monday, January 22, 2023, the Kumasi Traditional Council convened a session to address an alleged case of gross disrespect towards the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The accused, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, faced accusations of threatening to challenge Otumfuo’s authority if necessary.

During the session, the NPP leadership, represented by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah, requested a two-week extension from the date of the meeting for Wontumi to appear, citing health reasons.

However, the Council, presided over by the Bantamahene, rejected the justification after various chiefs expressed their views and strongly rebuked Wontumi, his media establishment, and the NPP.

Ultimately, the Council mandated the party to produce Wontumi within seven days.

Additionally, the Council insisted on the presence of Maurice Ampaw and the management of Wontumi Media regarding the lawyer’s remarks on the matter involving the station’s owner.

Ampaw, on record, had criticized the chiefs, branding them as rogue elements while expressing their desire to censure Wontumi, the owner of the station.

I am ready to go anytime they call me – Maurice Ampaw after alleged ‘insults’ on some Ashanti chiefs

Private legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has committed to attending the summons by the Manhyia Palace on Monday, January 29.

The lawyer was summoned in response to his earlier outburst, where he made derogatory remarks about some chiefs in the Ashanti region.

“We are going to talk law and no one is above the law. The chiefs could have just summoned me directly without going through Manhyia. Even if I decide not to work here in Kumasi, I can still fire from Accra.

I will honour the invitation, and you will clap for Lawyer Ampaw on Monday. I am going with the truth. Otumfuo supports the truth and I am going to lay bare the facts,” lawyer Ampaw told Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin on GhanAkoma.

On Monday, the General Secretary of the ruling NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, appeared before the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace to respond to alleged unsavoury comments allegedly passed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman during a vetting process.

Lawyer Ampaw was also invited for a derogatory remark passed about chiefs in Ashant, a video of which has since gone viral. He alleged in the video that “some chiefs in the Ashanti Region are corrupt.”

He stressed that he has respect for the Manhyia Palace so he will make it a point to honour the invitation.

“Everything that I have said will be subjected to strict proof. I will not say I am sick. I am not sick. I will be there. I am going there happily, because I will explain everything to them. It’s been a while since I went there. I will wear white-white. I am ready,” he added.

It would be recalled that Otumfuo’s Chief Linguist, Nana Kofi Owusu, told the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Justin Frimpong Kodua, that they should bring before the Asanteman Council the Regional Chairman of the Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Wontumi, within one week.

The order was given at a meeting held on January 22 at the Manhyia Palace.

“Wontumi should be produced here by next week, even if he is on a sick bed,” he told the NPP delegation.

Wontumi has been summoned to appear before the Asantehene for allegedly making unfavourable comments about Asanteman.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, accompanied by the national organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, and several regional executives of the party, appeared before the Asanteman Council to plead on behalf of the Regional Chairman.

However, conspicuously missing was Bernard Antwi Boasiako. Mr Kodua told the chiefs that Wontumi was indisposed “Nananom, we could not come with Chairman Wontumi because he has not been well.”

But the excuse did not sit well with some of the chiefs.

For instance, one of Otumfuo’s chief linguists, Nana Kwaku Owusu, demanded a medical report on Wontumi. “If you claim Wontumi is sick, where is his doctor’s report?” he queried.

Mr Frimpong Kodua pleaded for clemency as he was unable to present the doctor’s report requested.

Ban NPP from campaigning in Ashanti Region until Wontumi comes to Manhyia – Chiefs beg Otumfuo

Some leaders in the Ashanti Kingdom have proposed that Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the King, should impose a ban on the New Patriotic Party’s campaign activities in the Ashanti Region until Chairman Wontumi is produced.

In addition to the proposed ban, they are urging the Chief of Bantama to shut down Chairman Wontumi’s media entity.

The leaders argue that the Ashanti Region has been a stronghold for the ruling NPP, and they feel disrespected by the actions of Chairman Wontumi.

“For me, I advocate for the Bantamahene to close down his radio station. Furthermore, I strongly believe that it is imperative to bar the NPP from campaigning in the Ashanti Region unless they present Wontumi.

They should not be permitted to display any campaign material in the Ashanti Region until they produce him,” expressed one leader during a meeting between party executives and the Chiefs of the Ashanti Kingdom.

Chairman Wontumi has faced severe criticism for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the King of the Ashanti Kingdom during the political party’s parliamentary vetting.

Originally scheduled to meet with Manhyia on Monday, January 22, 2024, he was unable to attend due to health reasons. The Chiefs have now set a deadline of Monday, January 29, 2024, for his appearance before them.

This directive was issued during a meeting held on January 22 at the Manhyia Palace, with Nana Kofi Owusu insisting that Wontumi should be brought forth even if he is currently indisposed.

Last week, the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) instructed two key figures from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to present themselves before the Manhyia Palace.

The individuals involved are the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong and Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also recognized as Chairman Wontumi and serving as the Ashanti Regional Chairman.

This directive comes in response to an alleged incident during the NPP’s vetting process for parliamentary primaries in the Ashanti region. The confrontation reportedly occurred during the vetting of Energy Minister and MP for Manhyia South, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh.

Chairman Wontumi and Manhyia South Constituency Organizer, Alhaji Abuba, were involved in a heated argument over Wontumi’s failure to acknowledge the MP’s contributions to the party.

Chairman Wontumi allegedly made statements challenging the authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, stating,“I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)”.

In response to the incident, the Manhyia Palace has summoned Justin Kodua Frimpong and Chairman Wontumi to address the matter. The General Secretary confirmed the summons after briefing Otumfuo Saamanhene.

“After I brief Otumfuo Saamanhene upon his invitation over the issue. The general secretary of the party informed me that he has been directed to report to Manhyia Palace with Wontumi’’ he said.

Chairman Wontumi is currently out of the country for medical treatment in China, with no confirmed return date. The NPP National executives are planning to meet Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in person to seek resolution and clarity on the matter.

Come and defend why you disrespected Otumfuo – Ashanti youth order Wontumi

The Ashanti youth has called for the immediate presence of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Wontumi, at the Manhyia palace.

This demand arises in response to alleged  disrespectful comments made by Wontumi towards the revered Ashanti king, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Voicing their dissatisfaction, the youth group sent a resolute message to Wontumi, challenging his statements and insisting that he attend a palace to respond to the allegations leveled at him.

Addressing the press, the leader of the group stated, “Are you okay, Wontumi? Why would you speak against Otumfuo and the people of the Ashanti kingdom? You are not a man, Wontumi. You, little one, have the audacity to speak against our king. We need you in the palace, and be prepared for any consequences if you fail to comply.”The group also accused Wontumi of employing divisive political tactics that could potentially undermine national unity.

The situation remains tense as the plea for accountability and dialogue continues to gain traction within the Ashanti community.

Wontumi, a significant political figure in the region, is yet to respond to the specific accusations made by the youth group.

Reports suggest that following the vetting of the Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, confusion arose between the Manhyia South Constituency Organizer and Chairman Wontumi.

This purported disagreement stemmed from Wontumi’s alleged reluctance to provide testimony about the contributions made by the Manhyia South Member of Parliament to the party’s internal activities.

During an approximately 30-minute period of intense confusion, which led to a temporary suspension of the vetting, the outspoken NPP Chairman reportedly conveyed to Otumfuo’s Brempon, Nana Kwaku Duah, the Chief of Kokoso, that he, Wontumi, had established his kingdom in the Ashanti Region.

Furthermore, it is claimed that Chairman Wontumi made a public statement expressing his readiness to challenge Otumfuo on any disagreement with the Asante King.According to Nana Kwaku Dua,  Wontumi stated that ”I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)”.

Embattled Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has been accused of cursing the Kokosohene, Nana Kwaku Duah, with the ‘Antoa’ deity.

The alleged incident is said to be in response to accusations about Chairman Wontumi making derogatory remarks about Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene.

The situation unfolded when Justin Kodua, concerned about reports of Chairman Wontumi’s alleged attack on Otumfuo, called the Kokosohene to verify the news. During the phone conversation, Justin Kodua added Chairman Wontumi on a conference call to get his input on the controversial issue.

Unexpectedly, Chairman Wontumi, upon hearing the voice of Kokosohene, became angry and started to curse him. In his alleged curses, Wontumi reportedly invoked the powerful ‘Antoa‘ deity and other river gods, praying for harm to befall the Kokosohene without any apparent provocation.

The Kokosohene has confirmed the incident, stating that Wontumi cursed him, praying for the river deities to strike him dead.

“I’m extremely surprised about Wontumi’s arrogant and weird behaviour. He just started to rain curses on me when he heard my voice on the phone.

“Justin Kodua had called me on phone to verify the authenticity of Wontumi’s attack on Otumfuo and also ask what steps he should take to plead on behalf of Wontumi at the Manhyia Palace. Surprisingly, Wontumi rather started to curse me with river deities when he heard my voice on the phone.

“He cursed me with about seven river deities, including ‘Antoa’ to strike me dead and use my wife and children as thanksgiving”, Nana Kwaku Duah claimed, adding “even Justin Kodua was speechless about Wontumi’s actions”.

Even if Otumfuo strips naked, respect his throne – Blakk Rasta slams Wontumi

Controversial media figure Blakk Rasta has condemned the Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, for reportedly disrespecting the king of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Blakk Rasta expressed strong disapproval of Chairman Wontumi’s comments, which appear to undermine the authority of Otumfuo, deeming them deplorable and unacceptable given the revered status of the Ashanti Kingdom.

He rebuked Chairman Wontumi for his lack of respect toward Otumfuo, emphasizing that his popularity and wealth should not lead him into a conflict with the Asantehene.

During the UrbanBlend show, monitored by GhanaWeb, Blakk Rasta urged Otumfuo to address Chairman Wontumi, whom he labeled as “arrogant,” so that he could learn a lesson about speaking against authorities.

“You cannot disrespect Asantehene [Otumfuo Osei Tutu II]. Even if he strips naked and runs around like David, respect the throne that he sits on. That kingdom is so historically powerful and bigger than Asantehene. So, if you disrespect the Asantehene, you are not only disrespecting one king, you are disrespecting all the kings that ever sat on the throne, and you are disrespecting that ancient kingdom.

“How on earth should Chairman Wontumi open his mouth because of some dirty galamsey money that he has, sit back and say that he has built his own kingdom and that you have your police, you have your military, and that Asantehene cannot order you around? It means that I will spew every kind of nonsense into your face and tell you anything that I want to. That’s what it means,” he said.

In addition, he urged President Akufo-Addo to see to it that Chairman Wontumi is held accountable for his derogatory remarks.

“Apart from Asantehene summoning the arrogant Chairman Wontumi, I call upon the president of the country [Akufo-Addo]. If he’s truly the president and is in charge, you need to call this man to book.”

    Background

Chairman Wontumi is said to have received summons from the Manhyia Palace for allegedly undermining Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

Onuaonline.com reported that Wontumi questioned the Asantehene’s authority last week at a meeting of the NPP parliamentary primaries vetting committee.

According to the report, the party chairman declared, “I have established my kingdom,” and he would not think twice to challenge the Asantehene if he disagreed with him on any matter. He made this declaration without being provoked.

“I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)” the report quoted Wontumi as stating.

The incident report highlighted the involvement of Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the NPP and chairman of the vetting committee, during the incident.

Nana Kwaku Duah, Kokosohene, who was also present at the time, reportedly expressed strong disapproval of Wontumi’s statement.

“For you to even say those words in my presence is unacceptable, and I’m not happy about your weird and disrespectful behaviour,” Kokosohene reportedly fumed at Wontumi.

The Asanteman Traditional Council is reported to have written to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the NPP, after the incident to arrange for Chairman Wontumi’s appearance at the Manhyia Palace and to provide an explanation for his alleged disrespect for Otumfuo.

In response to the claims, Chairman Wontumi urged the general public to disregard the information because there was no way he could disrespect Otumfuo insisting that “it is a calculated attempt by some elements to bring disunity between himself and Otumfuo.”

The decision was disclosed during the last meeting of the year of the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace.

“The war was fought on 6th February. The plan we have on the table is that we will hold a symposium on the 6th of February, and on the 8th, we will hold a durbar,” he stated, as reported by Graphic Online’s Kwame Asare Boadu.

The commemoration of the Sagrenti war’s anniversary is set to be a significant event in Asanteman in 2024.

This year will also mark the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Additionally, the Juabenhene revealed that a 700-page book chronicling the history of the Asante Kingdom, compiled in collaboration between the British and traditional rulers of the Kingdom, will be launched.

The Sagrenti war occurred in 1874 when the British army, led by General Sir Garnet Wolseley, confronted the Asante army, which had earlier defeated the British and attacked the coastal states of the Gold Coast.

Referred to as the “Sagrenti War” due to pronunciation challenges, the conflict led to the abandonment of Kumasi by the Ashanti people.

The British, arriving on February 4, demolished the royal palace with explosives, leaving Kumasi in ruins, as documented in an article titled “The Sagrenti War and the Sacking of Kumasi” by the Edward A. Ulzen Foundation.
