This is a big mistake; stop it – Chief warns Offinsohemaa over public spat with Otumfuo

The ongoing challenge of appointing a new paramount chief for Offinso is reportedly attributed to the involvement of the Queen Mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, according to statements made by Nana Apau Wiafe Ababio Sanwoansan, the paramount chief of the Heman Traditional Area (Hemanhene).

The vacancy in Offinso arises from the nomination and subsequent rejection of Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Nana Sanwoansan addressed this issue during a meeting of chiefs in the Asanteman Council, as captured in a video shared by Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio on December 13, 2023.

In his remarks, Nana Sanwoansan expressed concerns about the roles played by both the former GNPC boss and the Queen Mother in the protracted saga.

Specifically addressing the queen mother, whom he said is an acquaintance, the Hemanhene said: “Nana Offinsohemaa is also making a big mistake. Offinsohemaa, we have been close friends for 30 years; why are you doing this?

“The youth are misbehaving, and some of them are even performing all kinds of rituals. What are you saying about this? Are you encouraging these things? Stop what you are doing. You can’t be doing this with the Asantehene,” he cautioned.

He also emphasised the position of the Asantehene that KK Sarpong was not a royal and therefore was unfit to be chosen, let alone enstooled, as successor to the late Offinsohene.

He added that the chieftaincy in Offinso cannot be bought with money, as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated months ago.

“KK, you made a donation during the one-week celebration of the late Offinsohene; during the funeral, you donated, and you even signed the book of condolence. If you were part of the royal family, would you be doing all this?

“If you were a royal, would you be signing the book of condolence? Stop what you are doing. We have to tell him the truth for him to stop what he is doing. You can’t be playing with the Asantehene like this,” he said in Twi.

“Even me, the Hemanhene, cannot do this with the Asantehene, what is wrong with you?” he added.

    Background:

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on April 28, 2022, days before his departure to the United States, turned down a request from Offinsohemaa Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko to accept Dr. K. K. Sarpong as her choice to ascend the Offinso stool, telling her to go and do the right thing as demanded by the traditional and customary protocols.

The kingmakers of the Offinso Traditional Area chose the former GNPC boss to succeed the late Paramount Chief of Offinso, Nana Wiafe Akenten II.

In reaction to this, some youth of Offinso described the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as an autocratic leader who is overstepping his traditional powers in the seeming chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The youth, without mincing words, kicked against Manhyia Palace’s decision that the kingmakers of the Offinso Traditional Area should bring a new person to succeed the late paramount chief of Offinso.

At a press conference, the concerned members of Offinso Youth said, “Offinso has taken note that the Asantehene has taken advantage of the respect our queen mother has for him, therefore over-exercising his powers on our queen mother and making him powerless.

“We can say emphatically that Otumfuo has no power to destool or enstool any paramount chief and he should allow Offinso Hemaa to do her work.””

    Kwaprahene dethroned by Otumfuo

After issuing a prior warning, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, has dethroned the Chief of Kwapra in the Ashanti Region, Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani.

The directive for Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani’s removal was proclaimed at the Manhyia Palace on Monday, December 11, 2023, during a session of the Asantemen Traditional Council.

In October, the Asantehene summoned Kwaprahene, citing threats to terminate Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani’s reign due to allegations of engaging in the double sale of lands and violating the Great Ashanti Oath (Ntamkese).

“Kwaprahene knows why I’m looking for him. He knows I am looking for him because of the land issues. That’s why he is dodging me with the excuse of sickness. And he thinks he is smarter than me,” the Asantehene declared.

He stressed, “I won’t take any excuse from him. When he was young, he sold my land without bringing me my money. I forgave him, and you see the issue has returned to me,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II recalled.

The Asantehene also criticized the kingmakers of Kwapra for not offering Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani sound advice. “And you, the elders, I have always cautioned you against his excesses and that you should caution him to change his ways,” he reprimanded.

Reports suggest that Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani failed to respond to Asantehene’s summons.

While instructing rituals for Kwaprahene’s removal, Otumfuo further decreed the destoolment of several sub-chiefs to Kwaprahene, citing their failure to provide wise counsel to the chief.

The Asantehene also urged individuals with land issues in Kwapra to bring their concerns before him, assuring resolution for any such matters.

  • Division among people of Dormaa while Asantes unite with Otumfuo – Kofi Adoma

Division among people of Dormaa while Asantes unite with Otumfuo – Kofi Adoma

Media personality Kofi Adoma Nwanwani has strongly criticized the residents of the Bono region for their apparent lack of support towards the paramount chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, in his ongoing dispute with Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

In contrast to the united front displayed by the Asantes in rallying behind Otumfuo, Kofi Adoma Nwanwani pointed out the divisive atmosphere in Dormaahene’s Bono region.

He emphasized the need for the people in the Bono region and surrounding areas to learn from the unity exhibited by the Asantes, especially when their leader is involved in a public disagreement with another chief.

Expressing his views on his Kofi TV platform, as monitored by GhanaWeb, Kofi Adoma Nwanwani commended the Asantes for their solidarity with Otumfuo and criticized the Bono people for their lack of unity in supporting Dormaahene during such contentious circumstances.

“I’m disappointed in the fact that people in the Bono region are not united. I salute the Asantes because when it comes to oneness, they are very good at it. I used to tell my Ga friends that although Accra is the capital when a president from another country comes to Ghana, he goes to Manhyia Palace to greet Asantehene because of how they have projected themselves. That is what other regions and tribes should emulate to make them better,” he said.

Kofi Adoma continued: “It is time for the people in the Bono region to be united. So if Dormaahene has stood up for something, they should all rally behind him. If it is Techimanhene, his people should do the same for him so that together, Bono will become great.

“How the Asantes are united, I don’t see that among the Bono people. I can tell you that Dormaahene has done very well for being brave in that manner. The way Asantes are rallying behind Otumfuo, is it the same way the Bono people are doing for Dormaahene? No.”

Recent criticisms from Dormaahene towards the Ashanti Kingdom have ignited a chieftaincy controversy, leading to a debate over whose status holds superiority. Dormaahene found himself barred by the Sunayni High Court from attending the funeral of Berekumhene, while his rival, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was present.

The decision by the Berekum Traditional Council to prevent Dormaahene’s attendance at the funeral, citing his refusal to adhere to a specified reporting time, has raised concerns about unity within the Bono region’s community.

This incident highlights the potential discord among the people in the region and calls into question the harmony of their traditional leadership.

  • Akua Donkor appeals to Otumfuo to reconcile with Dormaahene

Akua Donkor appeals to Otumfuo to reconcile with Dormaahene

Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, has urged Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to reconcile with Dormaahene, Oseadeeyo Asagyefo Agyemeng Badu II.

Donkor, who asserts her traditional connection as a wife to the Ashanti overlord, points to Otumfuo’s past resolution of strained relations with the Akyem Abuakwa Stool as evidence of his capacity to resolve the current standoff with Dormaahene.

“You demonstrated a lot of wisdom in healing relations with the Akyem and that earned you the title of King Solomon, which is well deserved,” she said in an interview on Kofi TV.

Resolving his issues with Agyemang Badu II, she emphasized, would only solidify his throne as King Solomon.

“The way you solved the Akyem issue, please do all it takes to fix the Dormaa issue… the Akyem issue was more contentious but you resolved it, so, please do same with the Dorrmaa case,” she added.

Last month, Otumfuo attended the funeral of Berekumhene in a ceremony where the Dormaahene was barred through a court process.

Expressing deep distress over the incident, the Dormaahene stated that the turn of events was painful and that he would not easily forget it.

The injunction on his participation was supposedly intended to prevent clashes between his followers and those of Otumfuo, amid recent tensions concerning the constitutional powers and jurisdiction of the Asantehene.

Following the Okyenhene’s earlier visit to Manhyia, Otumfuo returned the favor in 2018 by visiting Akyem Abuakwa.

The gatherings signaled what many believed to be a warming of ties between the two powerful monarchs.

Otumfuo said during his visit that the Asantes and Akyems were not enemies and that “our forefathers related very well. And we all came from Adansi and built our communities. Indeed, we are one people.”

According to historians, pre-colonial politicians like Captain George Maclean and Commander Hill set the two ethnic groups against one another, which led to their eventual enmity.

As a result of the development, the Akyems killed Opemsuo Osei Tutu II in 1717 when he was crossing the River Pra.

  • Vim Lady criticizes chiefs’ public chieftaincy feud, warns against escalation into conflict

Vim Lady criticizes chiefs’ public chieftaincy feud, warns against escalation into conflict

Controversial media personality, Afia Pokua, also known as Vim Lady, has criticized Dormaahene, Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, and Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for publicly engaging in a chieftaincy dispute.

She expressed that the actions of these two prominent chiefs involved in a public feud over chieftaincy supremacy in the country are unnecessary. Vim Lady urged them to end the dispute to prevent it from escalating into a conflict.

She highlighted that Ghana is already dealing with chieftaincy issues, such as the prolonged Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict, with efforts to resolve it proving unsuccessful.

During an appearance on the Egyasogyaso political show on Okay FM, as monitored by GhanaWeb, Vim Lady emphasized that the disagreement between Dormaahene and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has the potential to escalate into a full-blown war. She called on them to stop the unnecessary public dispute.

“The way things are going in Ghana with chieftaincy issues is worrying. Already we have politicized our traditional chieftaincy and it has affected its reputation. It [Otumfuo and Dormaahene feud] has now turned into a full-blown tribal difference, and it is dangerous. It’s because of these issues that some nations are at war so, if we want it to be that way then we should allow it to fester,” she said.

“What some people are doing on social media is so disgusting. Already we have Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict issues going on. As we speak, there are security forces guarding the place. It started in 1923 till date and the dispute has not been resolved yet,” Vim Lady added.

Following his assertion that there isn’t a monarchy in Ghana, Dormaahene faced criticism for his perceived underestimate of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

The Sunyani High Court recently prohibited Dormaahene from attending the Berekumhene’s funeral after she failed to show up a day prior to Otumfuo’s arrival.

It remains to be seen if the feud will be settled quickly or if it will worsen, which could be detrimental to the nation.

  • Meaning behind Tepahene’s white Attire vs Otumfuo’s black garb at funerals

Meaning behind Tepahene’s white Attire vs Otumfuo’s black garb at funerals

The vibrant culture of the Ashanti people in Ghana is deeply rooted in traditions, art, and social structures. In Ashanti culture, the use of color plays a significant role in conveying mood and occasion, while large umbrellas, depending on their size and characteristics, communicate identity, authority, and spiritual significance.

As the head of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II holds the highest authority, overseeing numerous paramount chiefs. During state occasions such as funerals, Otumfuo traditionally wears black, symbolizing mourning and sorrow in Akan culture.

A distinctive practice observed in the Ashanti Kingdom is the variation in attire and umbrella color among paramount chiefs. Notably, the paramount chief of Tepa, witnessed at the recent burial rites of the late Berekumhene, Daasebre Amankona Diawuo II, wore white and used a white umbrella. This deviation is rooted in the role of Tepa Baanie, a revered deity under the Tepahene, with historical significance in the kingdom.

Tepa Baanie is renowned for its mystic powers, including granting children to the barren and playing significant spiritual roles in the kingdom’s historical expansion wars. In acknowledgment of Tepa Baanie’s importance, the Tepahene and his priest are permitted to wear white, while the Asantehene and other chiefs wear black during mourning ceremonies.

Functioning as a source of spiritual power and protection for Otumfuo’s reign, the Tepa Baanie priest performs rituals for the Asantehene.

A video from the Berekumhene’s funeral depicts the Tepa Baanie priest tapping the Asantehene with an animal tail, and a deity carried by the Tepahene’s entourage is presented to Otumfuo, who places his hand on the deity for fortification.

  • “What they are doing is not good” – Diana Asamoah descends on Otumfuo, Dormaahene over public feud

“What they are doing is not good” – Diana Asamoah descends on Otumfuo, Dormaahene over public feud

Gospel musician Diana Asamoah has entered the ongoing public dispute between the Ashanti Kingdom’s king, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Traditional Ruler of Dormaa, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, regarding the supremacy of their kingship.

As per Asamoah, the public clash between Dormaahene and Otumfuo is detrimental to their societal standing, given their esteemed reputation in Ghana.

She acknowledged that the feud aligns with biblical prophecy, suggesting that in the last days, kingdoms would contend for supremacy, making the situation somewhat expected.

During an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3, Diana Asamoah criticised Otumfuo and Dormaahene for their unseemly conduct, emphasising that such actions set a poor example for the youth.

“Apart from what I am saying, if you study the Bible very well, you will never speak against any authority because it says nations will rise against nations and also kingdoms will rise against each other.

“Let’s look at what is happening in Ghana now—what has Asantehene done to Dormaahene and who wronged the other. These are prominent people that we are learning from, yet look at what they are doing today. It is not good, but people have politicised it,” she said.

Diana Asamoah further added, “The Bible has said it in 2 Timothy 3:1–5, ‘Know that in the last days, hard times will come and men will be proud’ because everyone wants to feel big. Also, men will be money-drunk, and today, because of money, a parent can kill their child without any remorse. Because of that, fetish priests have turned into pastors.”

Controversy arose following Dormaahene’s assertion that there is no ‘king’ in Ghana, drawing criticism from those who reprimanded him for seemingly underestimating the supremacy of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

  • Video: Why Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu is not a King – Historian explains

Video: Why Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu is not a King – Historian explains

In a thought-provoking statement, Yaw Anokye Frimpong, a lawyer and historian, has raised questions about the royal title of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the overlord of the Ashanti land in Ghana. Frimpong contends that the traditional leader is not a king, as commonly referred to, but rather a paramount chief with unique powers.

Frimpong emphasized that the Ashanti Kingdom, once prominent in history, no longer exists in the same form. According to him, the laws of Ghana, to which Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is subject, do not recognize the establishment of kings. In his interview with GhanaWeb, Frimpong stated that kings, in the truest sense, are the heads of state in their respective countries, having their own parliament, judiciary, and executive branches.

“The words kingdom and king are not in Ghana’s chieftaincy laws and regulations. Because to be a king means to be the head of a kingdom, and to have a kingdom means you have a king who has his own parliament, who has got his own judiciary and has an executive under him, and the people of the country are subject to him without question,” Frimpong explained.

Frimpong drew a distinction between the traditional leader of the Ashanti and historical kings like Charles II of England. He highlighted that the Asantehene’s authority is confined to the Ashanti land, and he is subject to the laws and institutions of Ghana, unlike a head of state.

While Frimpong questioned the widespread use of the term “king” for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, he acknowledged the traditional leader’s unique position as a “super paramount chief.” According to Frimpong, the Asantehene possesses powers that surpass those of other paramount chiefs in Ghana. Notably, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II holds the authority to enstool or destool any paramount chief under his jurisdiction, a privilege not granted to other traditional leaders in the country.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has initiated a search for one of his sub chiefs, Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani, who stands accused of land sales in Kwapra.

In a video broadcasted by Opemsuo FM in Manhyia, the Asantehene expressed his directive, “Go and apprehend him.”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II pointed out that he is seeking Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani due to ongoing land disputes, asserting that the Kwaprehene has been evading him under the pretext of illness.

“Kwaprehene knows why I’m looking for him. He knows I am looking for him because of the land issues. That’s why he is dodging me with the excuse of sickness. And he thinks he is smarter than me,” the Asantehene declares.

The Asantehene emphasized his determination, stating, “I won’t take any excuse from him. When he was young, he sold my land without bringing me my money.”

Despite his earlier forgiveness, the matter has resurfaced, and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II rebuked the kingmakers of Kwapra for not providing Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani with sound guidance.

He urged the elders to advise him to amend his ways and curb his excesses.

“And you to the elders, I have always cautioned you against his excesses and that you should caution him to change his ways,” he reprimanded.

Otumfuo strikes again; declares sub-chief wanted

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered king of the Ashanti people, has initiated a search for one of his subchiefs, Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani, over alleged land sales in Kwapra. In a video circulated by Opemsuo FM, a Manhyia-based radio station, the Asantehene expressed his frustration and ordered that Kumani be brought before him.

The Asantehene’s displeasure with Kumani is evident in his words: “Kwaprehene knows why I’m looking for him. He knows I am looking for him because of the land issues. That’s why he is dodging me with the excuse of sickness. And he thinks he is smarter than me.”

He also highlighted a past incident where Kumani had sold land that belonged to him without providing the promised payment. The Asantehene, however, had forgiven him at that time. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed his disappointment at the situation, stating, “I won’t take any excuse from him. When he was young, he sold my land without bringing me my money. I forgave him, and you see the issue has returned to me.”

In addition to addressing Baffour Adugyemfuo Kumani, the Asantehene directed his reprimands toward the kingmakers of Kwapra for not providing adequate counsel to Kumani, emphasizing the need for them to guide him to change his ways.

This development signifies the king’s commitment to addressing the land dispute and his expectation that Kumani will be held accountable for his actions.

The Asantehene’s impassioned speech, delivered while addressing chieftaincy issues, highlighted his concern about the impact of financial interests on the traditions and unity of the Ashanti people.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II voiced his deep apprehension that the Ashanti Kingdom was not where it should be, expressing his belief that the love of money had led some of his chiefs astray. He lamented the waning allegiance to the Ashanti Kingdom and the detrimental effects of materialism on the cultural heritage and unity of his people.

“Our love for money is destroying things. People don’t have love for Ashanti anymore… We have to remember the Asanteman we used to have and rise,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II passionately stated in Twi.

He reminded his audience of the sacrifices made by individuals like Tweneboa Koduah, who had devoted themselves to the cause of Asanteman. The Asantehene emphasized the importance of honoring their legacy and questioned the current generation’s dedication to the kingdom.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II pledged to take significant steps to ensure the Ashanti Kingdom returns to its former glory. He articulated his determination to scrutinize and, if necessary, remove sub-chiefs who were not serving the best interests of the Ashanti Kingdom. This decision reflects his unwavering commitment to restoring the cultural and traditional values of the Ashanti people.

The Asantehene’s vow to reinvigorate the Ashanti Kingdom and address the challenges it currently faces has generated significant interest and support from both the Ashanti community and the wider public. His dedication to preserving the kingdom’s rich heritage and history is expected to resonate with many, and the Asantehene’s vision for a revitalized Asanteman has gained renewed momentum.

Dr. Bawumia openly acknowledged the pivotal role that Otumfuo’s blessings had played in securing his victory during the conference.

“I came in peace, and today being Akwasidae, I came for a visit and to celebrate with him (Otumfuo). Alan Kyerematen occupied the third position with 95 votes, translating to 10.29 percent of the total.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, on the other hand, secured the fourth position, amassing 36 votes, which accounted for 3.90 percent of the vote tally.

  • A rare video of Otumfuo-led Asanteman Council destooling a sub-chief

The Asanteman Council has witnessed the destoolment of one of its subchiefs by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This action was taken in response to what was perceived as a lack of respect for a ruling made by the Asantehene in a land dispute involving the chief and another party.

A video shared on the Royal Palace MultiMedia YouTube page captured the moment when the Gyaasefuor presented the now-former Nkonsonhene, Nana Osei Tiri II, before the Asanteman Council.

According to the complainants in the case, despite Otumfuo’s ruling that a piece of contested land should remain untouched by the parties involved, Nana Osei Tiri II had disregarded this decision and even embarked on development activities on the land.

Following the ruling, Otumfuo had imposed restrictions on accessing the land and had called on both parties to present their plans, awaiting his final decision. However, Nana Osei Tiri II defied these directives.

In the course of cross-examination conducted by Otumfuo’s linguist, it was revealed that the Nkonsonhene had engaged in behavior considered as misconduct. His attempts to provide an explanation fell short, ultimately leading to the decision to depose him from his position.

In his statement, Otumfuo highlighted that the Nkonsonhene had neglected his responsibilities over an extended period, failing to uphold essential duties associated with his role. He also mentioned their childhood friendship as contributing to his perception that the Nkonsonhene had shown disregard for the significance of his position. These factors culminated in the decision to remove him from his office.

    Otumfuo attends Emancipation Day celebration

On Sunday, July 30, 2023, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, undertook a momentous journey to Trinidad and Tobago to take part in their Emancipation Day Celebration.

This event, which is observed annually on August 1, marks the historic abolition of Chattel Slavery in the British colonies on August 1, 1834.

Upon arrival at the Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, the revered leader of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, received a warm and gracious welcome from the government officials.

A video shared by Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio captured the significant moment as the plane carrying the Asantehene touched down at Piarco International Airport.

To honor his presence as the esteemed guest of honor, an impressive guard of honour was assembled, which the Asantehene meticulously inspected before proceeding to a grand welcome ceremony.

The President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Kangaloo, personally extended an invitation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to be the special guest for their 2023 Emancipation Day celebrations.

In a formal ceremony attended by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Keith Christopher Rowley, and their Honouree Counsel, the invitation was officially formalized. It is worth highlighting that Trinidad and Tobago holds the distinction of being the first country to observe Emancipation Day, making Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s presence even more significant as he joins in commemorating this historic event.

  • Kumasi artisans plead with Akufo-Addo, Otumfuo to save their livelihoods after losing land dispute case

Kumasi artisans plead with Akufo-Addo, Otumfuo to save their livelihoods after losing land dispute case

The future hangs uncertain for the hundreds of artisans and traders who have long operated at Odifuor Asare Park in Amakom, Kumasi. Their livelihoods are now at stake following a high court ruling on Friday, June 16.

For nearly four decades, the 3.4-acre land has served as a bustling hub for various skilled workers, including mechanics and food vendors.

But a private individual laid claim to the land, challenging the artisans’ longstanding presence and usage.

Over 300 artisans embarked on a legal battle against the private individual, seeking to establish their rightful ownership of the land.

Regrettably, the ruling declared the land to belong to the private individual, leaving the artisans in a state of uncertainty and potential displacement.

The ruling has left the artisans grappling with the fear of losing their source of income and the economic stability they have built over the years.

“We are more than three hundred people operating in the area. All these persons have apprentices. I have worked at the place for the past 38 years. I was the first to start operating there. The KMA allowed us to engage in our activities there. Even if they want to sell the land, we can buy it,” Akwasi Addai, one of the mechanics stated in an interview with Citi News.

In light of this verdict, the aggrieved individuals are now reaching out to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and President Nana Akufo-Addo, appealing for their intervention to prevent the potential loss of their source of livelihood.

“We are appealing to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and President Akufo-Addo to intervene. We have no one to come to our aid,” one of the affected persons, Georgina Mensah appealed.

Emmanuel Addai, the lawyer representing the affected persons, has expressed the intention to appeal the court’s decision on behalf of his clients.

He urged the artisans to remain calm during this process, assuring them that legal action will be taken.

Efforts to contact the private individual involved in the case have thus far been unsuccessful.

Akufo-Addo calls on Otumfuo to help him resolve Bawku crisis

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has underscored the giant contributions of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in the political governance of Ghana.

The president described the revered monarch as ‘an invaluable partner in the governance of Ghana,’ at a birthday dinner held for the Asantehene in London on May 6.

Akufo-Addo cited the specific instance of the Otumfuo’s contributions to securing peace especially in the Dagbon crisis, where he was a mediator, and expressed hope that the Asantehene will extend a similar hand in resolving the raging Bawku crisis.

He tasked birthday attendees to “make merry and remember the contributions of Asantehene to national lives, not the least to the stability of our country.

“Remember the role he played in bringing a settlement to the crisis in Dagbon and I am confident he is going to repeat that for me in the Bawku crisis,” he stressed.

The Bawku crisis has experienced a resurgence in recent months with factions engaging in deadly hostilities. The government recently announced that soldiers will be deployed to the situation.

  • Buzzing on twitter over Asanteman flag being used on a coronation flyer

Buzzing on twitter over Asanteman flag being used on a coronation flyer

Twitter is enraged about the usage of the Asanteman Gold, Black, and Green flag on a brochure promoting the Otumfuo’s attendance at King Charles III’s coronation on May 6.

The flyer, an unofficial one, posted by a Twitter handle called Royal World Thailand, captures a number of royals who attended the event.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Lady Julia are the first on the flyer but whereas the others had their national flags beneath their portraits, they had the Asanteman flag not the Ghana flag.

The Asanteman flag is always present especially on official cars of the Otumfuo wherever he travels to in the country.

So what is the disagreement about?

At the heart of the back and forth that has since ensued is why the Ghana flag was not used with those demanding so, insisting that Asanteman is within Ghana and the Otumfuo is Ghanaian.

Those against the move are of the view that the Asantehene was invited in his capacity as leader of the Ashanti Kingdom which has strong relations with the British monarchy.

What you need to know: The Asanteman flag

The Asantes (Asante Region/Asante Kingdom) are the only people in Ghana with an official national flag, a symbol of authority which they call the Asanteman Flag.

The flag of the Ashanti Region was adopted by the Ashanti kingdom’s Emperor Asantehene Prempeh II in 1935.

It is based on the Ashanti absolute monarchy throne, the Golden Stool, which has been Ashanti’s symbol of unity and soul since 1701, the early-eighteenth century AD, upon the foundation of the Ashanti Empire.

Yellow, black, and green are the colours that signify the Ashanti flag.

All the elements in the Flag have a meaning, and they have been explained below:

    1. The yellow part of the flag represents the riches/wealth of Asanteman.

    2. The Black part of the flag represents the symbolic image of the Blackman concerning the Asante Nation and the courage of the Asante Nation in facing the challenges of warfare.

    3. The Green colour, represents the refreshingly greener vegetation cover in the forest areas of Asanteman.

    4. The symbol in the Black at the centre of the flag is called “Gyemirekutu KYƐ” (Hat) which is made up of animal parts coated with gold-coloured paintings: Elephant Tail, Ɔwam ti (Hornbill Head), The Skin Covering the Elephant Kneebone, The Feathers of the Hornbill, Adwera (PortulacaOleracea Leafs).

Also, the flag is beautifully positioned on the hood emblem on the bonnet of the 80-year-old Rolls Royce of the Asantehene.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has made enormous contributions to Ghana’s political leadership, according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The president described the revered monarch as ‘an invaluable partner in the governance of Ghana,’ at a birthday dinner held for the Asantehene in London.

“I cannot vouch for my predecessors with the exception possibly of my own boss, president Kufuor but I could say and I think it is something that he would agree with me, that Otumfuo Osei Tutu has been an invaluable partner in the governance of Ghana.

“Certainly, for president Akufo-Addo, an invaluable partner … and I wish to declare publicly my appreciation and gratitude for all the assistance that has been given to me, by you these last six years,” the president stressed to applause.

Meet professor at KNUST, mastermind behind Otumfuo’s giant statue

Kumasi may have more statues than any other city in the nation. A statue of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was just unveiled, adding to this honor.

Situated at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) the gold-plated statue shows the Asantehene, who is also the Chancellor of the school, in traditional kente cloth, with what appears to be royal jewelry on his arms and wrists.

The statue also captures Otumfuo with a head ornament.

The statue, which exceptionally captures Otumfuo’s facial details, could also be described as an exact duplicate of his image.

Following the unveiling of the statue in March 2023, some people took to social media to heap praises on the man who is said to have been behind the near-perfect work.

Prof. Edwin Kwesi Bodjawah, the Head of the Department of Painting and Sculpture, as well as the Head of the KNUST Museum, has been mentioned as the man.

In a post by Voice of KNUST on March 26, 2023, it named the professor as the man who completed this giant work of the Ashanti king.

GhanaWeb has made an extra effort at knowing who this professor is.

Edwin Kwesi Bodjawah (b.1970) grew up in the centre of Accra but he currently lives and practices in the city of Kumasi. He was introduced to commercial cold cast techniques by Francis Nee Kwartei Owoo, a protégé of the once internationally famous pioneer—Giovanni Schoeman, in the early 1990’s while still in art school.

Bodjawah’s early works in this vein depicted genre scenes of the emerging African cities—with traditional African ornament—akin to the typical social realist works of the early postcolonial African canon.

Employing antique-finish cold cast technique for his resin-bronze and multi-metal sculpture, he also worked on a number of private and public sculpture commissions. However, a few years into the 21st Century, his practice would take a radical turn after epiphanic engagements with k?rî?k?chä seid’ou on contemporary art.

With Bodjawah’s new and expanded perspectives into the politics and infrastructure of international sculpture practice and thought, coupled with an enduring interest in African masking traditions, a new space of criticality was opened in his practice.

In his new body of works, he repurposes decommissioned and de-accessioned materials and objects which have intervened in the lives of individuals and communities on the African continent, especially, those mediated through colonial intervention and modern market economies.

Critical to Bodjawah’s current practice is his ritual surfing of the internet to select images of masks that have found their way into museums of the global north and reproducing them serially through a hybrid of artisanal and semi-mechanical means, collaborative manufacture and display.

In recent years, Bodjawah’s work has seen several exhibitions including Spectacles Speculations… (2018, Kumasi) and Silence speaks: Of Blood, Soil and more (2017, Cape Coast), curated by Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh. His publications are in the areas of art history, contemporary art and art education.

Bodjawah is a principal Trustee and Patron of blaxTARLINES, an art incubator and project space affiliated with the KNUST Fine Art Department and Associate Professor in the same Department. He is also the coordinator of the KNUST Museum (Opoku Ware II Museum).

    Mahama graces 3rd Akwasidae celebration

On Sunday, April 30, 2023, former president John Dramani Mahama joined Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and the Ashanti people to commemorate the third Akwasidae for 2023.

The former president was surrounded by chiefs and attendees of the occasion in a video of his arrival at the event that Opemsuo Radio posted.

As the crowd applauded Mahama, some chiefs and queens could be seen greeting him in lines.

The former was accompanied by leading figures in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) including the Ashanti Regional chairman of the party, Augustus Andrew Nana Kwasi, former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Betty Mould Iddrisu, former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Joshua Alabi.

The Akwasidae festival commemorates the time that the Ashanti Golden Stool was magically brought down from heaven and is celebrated once every six weeks on a Sunday.

Every paramount chief in Asanteman (Ashanti Kingdom) observes the Akwasidae in his own jurisdiction, however, the main event is held at the Manhyia Palace, in Kumasi.

There, the Asantehene sits in state for his subjects and other visitors to pay him homage.

  • Dr. Bawumia becoming president of Ghana has been my goal since 2012 – NAPO

Dr. Bawumia becoming president of Ghana has been my goal since 2012 – NAPO

Since meeting Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in 2012, Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has said that his ultimate goal has been to see that Bawumia is elected President of Ghana.

NAPO as known in politics, believes that with where Ghana currently is, the country needs an intelligent man like Bawumia to propel the country to a higher height.

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh made this known while speaking on Kumasi-based Pure FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

“All my work I’ve done and everything I’ve represented since 2012 is to ensure that Dr. Bawumia becomes President of Ghana one day. I’ve never for a second dreamt of being his running mate. That is not why I’m supporting Dr. Bawumia’s work. I have the conviction and confidence that where Ghana is at the moment, we need someone like Dr. Bawumia to take Ghana forward.” He revealed

He, however, shot down claims that he wants to become the running mate of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the Vice President has not even declared his intention to contest for the position so it’s worrying that people think he is lobbying to become his running mate.

“The man has not even declared his intentions to become the Flagbearer and subsequently President of this country. We just came to accompany him to Otumfuo’s Akwasidae. I was abroad some weeks ago working for the government when I heard someone insulting me and saying I want to become the Vice President. We have not even elected our flagbearer so how does someone even lobby to become Vice President?

People have been talking and saying things to paint others black and that is worrying. You don’t even get where they get their information from to link me to be lobbying to become the Bawumia’s running mate.”He bemoaned

The Energy Minister noted that people have started attacks just because of an internal contest but was quick to add that he is a man who does not subscribe to politics of insults.

“I don’t subscribe to the strategy of insulting your opponent and later going and begging so we move on. I will never forget if you insult me,” he said.

Majority are for Bawumia than the others – Joewise

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has a lot of support from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) membership to lead the party as leader into the general elections of 2024, according to First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei Owusu (Joewise).

He claimed that the number of NPP MPs and Ministers of States that accompanied Dr. Baswumia to the Manhyia palace in Kumasi for the second Akwasiadae of the year, 2023, is evidence of the support the party accords him.

The Bekwai Member of Parliament said “All the MPs and ministers following Dr Bawumia are ministers and MPs who support the bid of Dr Bawumia to lead the NPP  in the flagbeareship race. So we came with him to demonstrate or support for his bid to lead the NPP  in the flagbeareship race.

“That is why all of us are here today to support him to greet the Otumfuo and also for us to pay homage to Otumfuo on Akwasiadae.”

He added “The number of MPs and Ministers following Dr Bawumia demonstrates the support he has within the leadership of the party and even within the rank and file of the party, it shows that in the competition to lead the NPP  Dr Bawumia is high above everybody else.

“Those who supported the other candidates have followed him to come and greet Otumfuo so why would the rest of us who support Dr Bawumia not follow him?

“There is no controversy, in competition, it is a choice and everybody is able to choose freely, so this is a free choice.”

  • Otumfuo is the only person who can bring me back to Asante Kotoko – Herbert Mensah

Former Asante Kotoko Board Chairman Herbert Mensah has said that only owner, Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II can bring him back to the club.

According to Mr Mensah, who now holds position as President of Ghana Rugby, he considers himself very lucky to have served as Kotoko’s board chairman.

He revealed his appointment came without his consent. Mr Mensah served the club from 1999 to 2003.

Mr Mensah took charge of a club that was then struggling and helped transform their fortunes both on and off the pitch with a 5-year strategic plan. Many fans regard him highly and have been clamouring for his return.

“There is only one person who can order me and that is Otumfuo. I consider myself the luckiest of all chairmen of Kotoko because I still have an extraordinary relationship with Otumfuo”.

“I was announced as Chairman of Kotoko without my consultation with myself. If Otumfuo Osei Tutu II wants to do that, I will have no choice” he mentioned.

  • Otumfuo’s Chief of Staff calls for lockdown of Accra but not Kumasi

Authorities of the Manhyia Palace are backing calls of a lockdown of the nation to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Chief of Staff Kofi Badu says Ghana has a choice to make between taking a timely decision by dealing with the public risk or having to do so late.

He made this known to Luv FM after receiving protective equipment from some corporate institutions.

“It seems to me that this the appropriate moment for us to respond to that in other for us to contain the spread of the virus. I will have no problem at all to introduce any measure including a lockdown, the point is that you have a choice to take an action now, or you will be confronted with the worse situation later, I think this is something the country must act immediately”.

The Ghana Medical Association on Wednesday called on the government to immediately announce a nationwide lockdown.

The GMA in a statement showed concerns about the spread of Covid-19 and asked the government to immediately consider a lockdown to curb the situation.

Ghana has now recorded 132 cases of the deadly Covid-19 with 3 deaths and one recovery.

President Akufo-Addo commented on the lockdown debate when he met members of the TUC at the Jubilee House.

He said, a responsible government is required to look at the implications of the decision to lockdown a country in such a time, before it takes a firm decision.

“it is important for us to take into account the circumstances and conditions. When we lockdown Accra, what are the consequences?” he quizzed.

President Akufo-Addo indicated that currently, his administration is looking at all the possible options available before he communicates it to Ghanaians.

“I am hoping that much sooner than later, we will come to an agreement on what those measures are and the Ghanaian people will be informed,” he stressed.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, has urged businesses and trade associations to use dialogue and negotiations to resolve issues with government, regulators and other policy makers involved in their business operations.

This, he said, was in line with the tenets of the country’s democratic dispensation and demands of the 21st century, which called for innovative partnership models in policy engagement.

Otumfuo Osei-Tutu said this in an address read for him at the inauguration of the Trucks and Spare Parts Importers Association (TRUSPIA) in Kumasi.

He said building partnerships and cooperation for policy and compliance instead of antagonism, mistrust and extortions, were crucial to ensuring the state derived the required resources from industry to promote national development.

He commended the TRUSPIA for the initiative to become a formidable force to gain the necessary recognition and influence policies that would be beneficial to their business operations.

The Asantehene said choosing the path of partnership with the Government, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority and all relevant regulatory and enforcement agencies to build cooperation and compliance to improve the trucks and spare parts trade was a good step by the Association’s leadership.

He appealed to the Government and other key stakeholders in the truck and spare parts trade to respond favourably to ensure a win-win situation to define a new regime of cooperation as partners in national development.

Mr Adade Mensah, the Chairman of the Association, said the trucks and spare parts industry, aside the revenues and employment generated in the country, was the pivot of the transport sector, which also drove all other sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

He said the inauguration of the Association signalled a new relationship with the state, regulators and enforcement agencies as it shifted its policy philosophy from that of confrontational to cooperation, dialogue and partnerships with policy makers and other relevant agencies.

Mr Mensah said the Association was going to institute an annual policy week to dialogue with all relevant government agencies involved in their business operations on all issues that might be affecting their business operations.

It would also be used as a platform to engage political parties to interact and factor into their manifestoes issues confronting businesses in the trucks and spare parts industry.
