Bawku mediation: Otumfuo’s report misrepresents talks – Mamprugu Overlord

The Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, the Nayiri, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has described a chieftaincy mediation report presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as a “procedurally flawed” and “unilaterally imposed” document.

According to a statement dated Wednesday, December 17, and issued by the Mamprugu Traditional Council, the content of the document is contrary to the discussions held during the mediation.

The statement further contended that such actions by Otumfuo contradict the fundamental purpose of mediation. It added that, “I must state clearly and without reservation that the so-called report and recommendations do not reflect my engagements with Otumfuo, nor those of my duly constituted mediation team.”

“To say that I feel betrayed, disappointed, and deeply hurt would be a grave understatement,” he wrote, alleging that the report was “replete with factual inaccuracies” and displayed a “manifest imbalance” favouring one side’s narrative while omitting Mamprugu’s case.

In April this year, President John Mahama tasked the Asantehene to resume mediation of the Bawku conflict, with sessions scheduled for April 28 to May 1, 2025. On Wednesday, December 17, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, presented the findings and recommendations following his mediation talks with representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi.

Otumfuo’s findings recognised Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka as the legally rightful chief of Bawku and, therefore, the Paramount Chief of the Kusasi Traditional Area. The presentation ceremony, held at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday, was attended by the Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang; the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II; the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak; senior government officials; and members of the National Peace Council, among other dignitaries.

The Asantehene, in a 45-minute presentation, stated that “I’m here not to give a judgement of who was wrong and who was right. I’m here to present the facts as they are, so that we can have peace.”

The mediation talks began months ago and were spearheaded by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. During the last gathering, he urged the factions involved in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to cease power struggles and work towards lasting peace.

He made the call on Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi while speaking to representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi.

“Whatever the outcome of the mediation, you will still have to live together as brothers and sisters,” he added.

Otumfuo’s engagement with the groups was aimed at finding lasting solutions to end the ongoing feud, which resurfaced in 2024 in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

Bawku, which had remained relatively peaceful for a period, witnessed renewed conflict in late 2024. The resurgence of violence was largely sparked by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi chief who had been enskinned in 2022 but was later exiled when his enskinment was ruled illegal.

His return to Bawku followed the withdrawal of an arrest warrant against him by a Kumasi High Court in October 2024, reigniting tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities. The renewed violence has resulted in deadly confrontations, including attacks on both civilians and security forces.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the peace process has been met with widespread approval, with many hopeful that his leadership will play a critical role in restoring peace and stability to the troubled Bawku area.

Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired), a security expert, has called for greater support for Otumfuo’s initiative, stressing the importance of embracing multi-track diplomacy to strengthen the peace process.

Colonel Aboagye urged a more inclusive approach to the mediation, calling for the involvement of national stakeholders such as diaspora leaders, youth advocates, and women’s peacebuilding networks.

He believes a broader, multi-dimensional strategy will result in a more sustainable and inclusive solution to the conflict.

“Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he proposed.

He also cautioned that traditional diplomatic efforts alone may not be sufficient to resolve the deep divisions fuelling the protracted conflict.

Meanwhile, the community of Binduri in the Upper East Region, along with surrounding districts, has recorded a series of murders in recent times, leaving residents in fear and panic.

The victims were killed by unknown armed men, prompting the police to launch investigations to arrest the perpetrators. In a recent update, the Ghana Police Service offered a one-million Ghana cedi reward for information leading to the arrest of Mark Agingre, a native of Binduri, who has been labelled the prime suspect in the ongoing killings.

This announcement followed the murder of a man, his wife, and their three children in Binduri, which left another child in critical condition. The surviving child is currently receiving treatment at the Bolgatanga Government Hospital.

Earlier, on October 27, an elderly man and his two children were also killed by unknown assailants. Preliminary police investigations have linked the incidents to Mark Agingre.

The police have urged individuals with information on his whereabouts to contact 191, 18555, or report to the nearest police station.

Authorities have assured the public that the prime suspect and all others involved in the gruesome murders will be brought to justice.

Taking to Facebook on Saturday, November 8, the police wrote, “Suspect Mark Agingre, a native of Binduri, is wanted by the Police for his involvement in a series of brutal murders in the Binduri District and nearby communities in the Upper East Region. Suspect Agingre is wanted in connection with the murder of a man, his wife, and three children on 7th November 2025, which also left another child in critical condition at the Bolgatanga Government Hospital.”

It added, “He is further suspected of the murder of an elderly man and his two children on 27th October 2025 at Binduri. Preliminary investigations indicate that he may be behind several other targeted killings.

“A reward of One Million Ghana Cedis GH₵1,000,000.00 has been earmarked for anyone who is able to share relevant and credible information that will lead to the arrest of the suspect.”

The post concluded, “Anyone with credible information on his whereabouts is urged to contact the nearest police station or call 191, 18555 immediately. The Police assure the public that every effort is being made to track down the suspect and bring him to justice.”

On Sunday, October 26, a shooting incident left three individuals dead and five others injured. Reports indicate that gunmen invaded the victims’ residence and shot them, including a five-year-old child who died instantly.

George Bukari, Manager of Binduri-based Maxx Empire Radio and TV, is reported to have sustained injuries. The incident has been linked to the long-running Bawku conflict, where ethnic tensions have periodically sparked violence, making the area one of the most heavily monitored in northern Ghana.

The government has, in several ways, sought to restore calm. In July, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) deployed soldiers to conflict-prone areas, including Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla.

Four other individuals were killed in a daylight attack at the Garu District Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), which also left several others injured, on Monday, October 20. The deceased included a bystander, an NHIA staff member, a mentally unstable man, and Yahaya Bukari, headmaster of Garu D/A Junior High School.

Eyewitnesses reported that four armed men on two motorbikes fired shots indiscriminately upon arriving at the office.

“Around 10 a.m., we heard gunshots. Initially, we thought it was coming from the rural bank area, but later we found out that the attackers had gone to the health insurance office,” a witness stated.

Edward Ndebugri, former Presiding Member of the Garu District Assembly and current Assembly Member for Kugri, recounted that the gunmen targeted bystanders and fleeing residents.

“There is a public school close to the health insurance office, and when the shooting started, the teachers and pupils began running helter-skelter. The gunmen chased them, and when one of the teachers fell, they shot him dead,” he added.

The assailants reportedly left the NHIA office with nothing. In response, heavily armed police and military personnel patrolled key areas, including the District Health Insurance Office and the Presbyterian Hospital.

“The whole town is in shock. This is the first time we are witnessing such an incident. People are living in fear, and we are pleading with the security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the Assembly Member for Kugri appealed.

In April, the Ghana Police Service directed all regional commands to implement immediate protective measures for police officers and their families in the Upper East Region, particularly in Bawku, Pusiga, and Sindi.

The directive followed intelligence suggesting that unknown operatives, potentially linked to names such as “King Doormathin” and “Nectwart Ermonnel,” may be targeting police officers and their relatives.

“Recent developments suggest that police officers and their families, whether indigenous or non-indigenous, have become potential targets,” the internal message stated.

  • I’ll destool any chief who promotes violence over land – Asantehene warns

I’ll destool any chief who promotes violence over land – Asantehene warns

Chiefs within the enclave of the Ashanti Kingdom will have their titles stripped off if they employ the services of individuals who use threats or violence to protect lands under their care, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has warned.

The Asantehene gave the stern warning on Wednesday, November 5, at the Manhyia Palace when the newly appointed Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, visited the palace. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II fumed at the actions of these land guards, adding that such conduct was against the traditional governance system of Asanteman.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II further called on individuals or chiefs involved in land disputes to seek amicable resolution through proper channels rather than resorting to violence or unauthorised security arrangements.

“I will destool any chief who engages the services of land guards. They know very well that they have no such authority. When those lands were entrusted to them upon their enstoolment, I never instructed them to hire land guards to protect them. I did not grant them the power to employ people to use guns and harm others.

“If you have any land disputes with anyone, bring it before me, and we will resolve it amicably, for peace to prevail,” the Asantehene said.

In July, the Asantehene issued a similar warning, declaring his readiness to destool any chief found harbouring or condoning the illegal activities of land guards within their jurisdictions. The Asantehene’s declaration came during the first Asanteman Council meeting following the culmination of the Silver Jubilee celebrations at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

Addressing the gathering, Otumfuo highlighted the alarming emergence of land guards in Asanteman, a phenomenon previously uncommon in the region. “A practice that didn’t have any place in Asanteman has started gaining roots — land guards,” Otumfuo remarked, expressing deep concern over the growing presence of these illegal operatives involved in land disputes. He disclosed that a committee comprising security agencies had been established to investigate and root out this unlawful practice.

The Asantehene minced no words in his threat, stating, “The police and the military will inform me about the locations where these practices are occurring. Any chief implicated in the report will face destoolment. Let us await the findings of the committee.”

Emphasizing the sanctity of land and the traditional methods for resolving disputes, Otumfuo questioned the necessity of resorting to land guards. “Lands do not move and cannot be taken anywhere. When I allocated land to you, I did not authorize the use of land guards,” he affirmed, underscoring the traditional principles guiding land ownership and dispute resolution in Asanteman.

In addition to addressing the menace of land guards, Otumfuo also touched on the issue of illegal mining within Asanteman, pointing out that some traditional leaders are complicit in these illicit activities. He pledged to investigate any chief implicated in reports of illegal mining and vowed swift destoolment for those found guilty.

The Asanteman Council, comprising traditional leaders and stakeholders, has expressed support for Otumfuo’s measures to safeguard the region against these emerging security threats. The Ashanti Regional Security Council has previously acknowledged the historical absence of land guards in the region due to the effective stewardship of stool lands vested in Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and his chiefs.

They reiterated the importance of utilizing accepted channels for resolving land disputes and called upon all parties involved to adhere to established protocols.

Ghana’s Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), governs all categories of land—customary, public, and private—and aims to streamline land administration, reduce disputes, and enhance tenure security. The Act codifies various land interests, including allodial title, customary freehold, leasehold, and usufructuary rights, while also introducing reforms such as electronic conveyancing and protections for spousal property rights.

In 2024, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) advised individuals to follow legal procedures to settle their land issues. The ARCC emphasized that those who engage the services of land guards will face severe consequences.

In a statement, it wrote, “Any person found to engage the services of land guards will be apprehended, prosecuted, and arraigned before court.” The Council also warned that the land guards themselves would not be spared and would face the full force of the law.

The ARCC stressed the importance of using appropriate legal channels to address land disputes, noting that the activities of land guards often result in violence and pose a threat to law-abiding citizens.

“Based on this fact, the Ashanti Regional Security Council requests all citizens in the region to use the right procedures to address their land disputes rather than employ the use of land guards, whose activities always threaten law-abiding citizens and result in violence,” the statement read.

The Council urged the public to adhere strictly to this directive to ensure peace and stability in the region.

“It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council that the public will accept the above directives for strict compliance to ensure peace in the region,” the ARCC concluded.

The rule of law in some communities in the country has been sidelined when it comes to land disputes. Land guards are often contracted by individuals who do not believe in the legal system or who seek to capture lands belonging to others. These land guards frequently inflict pain on individuals and, in some cases, push them to their early graves. The Police Service is working assiduously to nip the activities of land guards in the bud.

Bawku conflict: Otumfuo to meet Kusaug Traditional Council today

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to meet with the Kusaug Traditional Council today, Monday, June 30 as part of ongoing efforts to restore peace in Bawku.

This information was contained in a press release issued by the Manhyia Palace on Sunday, June 29.

“His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, will meet with the Kusaug Traditional Council on Monday, 30th June, 2025,” the release said.

Bawku, which had remained relatively peaceful for a period, saw conflict erupt once more in late 2024. The resurgence of violence was largely sparked by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi chief who had been enskinned in 2022, only to be exiled later when his enskinment was ruled illegal.

His return to Bawku followed the withdrawal of an arrest warrant against him by a Kumasi High Court in October 2024, reigniting tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.

The renewed violence has resulted in deadly confrontations, including attacks on both civilians and security forces.

On April 15, Otumfuo formally announced that the critical mediation sessions would take place from April 28 to May 1 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

However, it was postponed due to the complexity of the dispute in the locality.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the peace process has been met with widespread approval, with many hopeful that his leadership will play a critical role in restoring peace and stability to the troubled Bawku region.

Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired), a distinguished security expert, has called for greater support for Otumfuo’s initiative, stressing the importance of embracing multi-track diplomacy to strengthen the peace process.

Colonel Aboagye urged a more inclusive approach to the mediation, calling for the involvement of various national stakeholders such as diaspora leaders, youth advocates, and women’s peacebuilding networks.

He believes that a broader, multi-dimensional strategy will result in a more sustainable and inclusive solution to the conflict.

“Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he proposed.

He also cautioned that traditional diplomatic efforts alone might not be enough to resolve the deep divisions that have fueled the protracted conflict.

Allow Otumfuo lead Bawku peace talks – Gold Coin Group urges politicians

The group behind the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin project is asking politicians to stay out of the Bawku conflict and let the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, step in to help solve it peacefully.

This group, which was set up to honor the Asantehene for his role in promoting peace and helping Ghana grow, says the wisdom he used to settle the Dagbon conflict—after more than 1,000 meetings and over 17 years—can be used to bring peace to Bawku too.

Otumfuo is known as a “Pillar of Peace,” and the group believes he can only succeed in bringing lasting peace if everyone involved cooperates with him.

They are calling on all the groups fighting in Bawku to stop the violence and give their full support to the Asantehene’s peace efforts.

Allow peace process led by Otumfuo to come to its logical conclusion – Ayariga on Bawku crisis

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has appealed to residents of Bawku and its surrounding areas to exercise restraint and allow the peace process, spearheaded by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to reach its natural conclusion.

His appeal comes after recent violent clashes between some youth and security agencies, which have heightened tensions and stirred public concern.

In a press statement issued on Friday, 11 April, Mr. Ayariga emphasized the importance of patience, stating, “The Asantehene has demonstrated immense commitment to bringing lasting peace to Bawku. We must support his efforts by remaining calm and cooperative.”

The MP also acknowledged the frustrations of residents who have endured years of conflict but stressed that violence would only undermine the peace process. “We all yearn for peace and development. Resorting to violence at this critical moment only sets us back,” he said.

Mr. Ayariga further traced the origins of the current peace efforts, highlighting the tireless engagement and dialogue initiated by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. “This process has been inclusive, thorough, and driven by a sincere desire to heal our divisions. It deserves our full support,” he noted.

He urged traditional leaders, opinion leaders, the youth, and all stakeholders to remain committed to dialogue and peaceful engagement. “The future of Bawku depends on the choices we make today. Let us choose peace,” he concluded.

  • Asantehene orders Bantamahene to retrieve stolen deity without delay

Asantehene orders Bantamahene to retrieve stolen deity without delay

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has directed Bantamahene, Baffour Asare Owusu Amankwatia VI, to retrieve the stolen Asare Bediako deity from Adanwomase within a week and hand it over to the Asanteman Sumankwaahene.

The deity, a revered shrine of the Adanwomase community in the Kwabre East Municipality, was reportedly taken by one of the rival groups contesting its ownership and control.

Initially, when the matter was presented before Otumfuo’s court, he tasked the Bantamahene with collaborating with the affected chiefs and community members to locate and return the deity.

In response to inquiries from the Traditional Council regarding the location of the deity, Baffour Amankwatia stated, “We conducted a thorough search throughout the community, but the deity was nowhere to be found. “We even sought assistance from the authorities, but to no avail.”

This was met with disapproval from the chiefs and the Asantehene, who later realized that the Bantamahene had neglected his obligation and failed to fulfill his mandate.

Consequently, he was found guilty of contempt and directed to present eight rams as atonement.

However, during a session of the Kumasi Traditional Council at Manhyia Palace on March 13, 2025, Bantamahene—who is believed to have ties to the group that recently held the deity—stated that all attempts to recover it had been unsuccessful.

“Before he presents his report on Monday, he must retrieve Asare Bediako from its current location and hand it over to the Sumankwaahene,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu, decreed.

The Kumasi Traditional Council is currently reviewing a report from the committee assigned to investigate the ongoing dispute over the rightful ownership of the Asare Bediako deity and the Adanwomase stool.

Three individuals—Madam Akua Kyem, Opanyin Kwadwo Yadieya, and Opanyin Yaw Gyamfi—each claim to be the legitimate custodian of the deity.

Madam Akua Kyem narrated that her ancestors, who were members of the Aduana clan, journeyed from Denkyira to Asante, bringing the deity along with them. They initially took residence with the Bantama Gyaase, another Aduana clan, at Abuakwa Asonomaso.

During their stay, the deity became known for its supernatural abilities, providing relief to those in distress and healing the sick. However, at some point, it mysteriously vanished.

Through spiritual consultations, its whereabouts were eventually revealed, along with a strict caution against relocating it once it was found.

According to her testimony recorded in the committee’s findings, her ancestors eventually discovered the deity in Adanwomase, leading them to settle in the area permanently.

She recounted how the deity served as a source of healing for the sick and provided assistance to those who sought its divine intervention, including the ancestors of Opanyin Kwadwo Yadieya, who had suffered from leprosy.

She went on to explain that when the Adanwomase stool became unoccupied, Opanyin Yadieya’s family requested to take charge, a plea that was approved.

Since then, they have continued to assert their ownership of the deity, she added.

Following its investigation, the committee determined that the rightful caretakers of both the deity and the community were the descendants of Madam Akua Kyem, as her detailed recollection of past events strongly linked her lineage to the shrine.

Her claims were further validated by the Bantama Gyaasehene and the traditional priest of Wawase, who confirmed the authenticity of her account.

“Although all three claimants purportedly visited Bantama Gyaase upon migrating to Asante from Denkyira, she was the only one to have Bantama Gyaasehene as a witness, and his testimony aligned with hers”, the report indicated

On the other hand, the ancestry of the other claimants, along with parts of their accounts, was found to be inconsistent and questionable.

As a result, the committee reached a unanimous decision in favor of Madam Akua Kyem.

The entire Council accepted the conclusions drawn from the investigation.

An earlier committee, appointed by the Asantehene to resolve the matter, had arrived at a similar judgment.

Despite the Asantehene’s endorsement of the findings, the Bantamahene continued to insist that Opanyin Kwadwo Yadieya’s family were the rightful owners of the deity.

He claimed to have summoned the deity from the heavens and given it to a woman he identified as his sister.

However, Asante customs do not acknowledge the Bantamahene as having a sister.

Displaying patience, the Asantehene appointed a second committee to re-evaluate the case.

Asantehene strips Mpasaasohene of title over illegal mining, other violations

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Amofa Twumasi II from his position as chief of Mpasaaso No.2 in the Ashanti Region. His destoolment follows multiple allegations, including involvement in illegal mining.

Additional concerns were raised regarding the legitimacy of his royal lineage and his failure to uphold accountability and proper leadership within his community and among traditional authorities.

After 41 years on the throne, the chief was found guilty by the Asanteman Kumasi Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace following allegations against him.

The primary reason for his destoolment was his involvement in illegal mining in the Mpasaaso community, which has caused significant damage to local water bodies.

The Asantehene stressed that the chief’s actions were a breach of traditional values, highlighting the duty of traditional leaders to uphold the law and safeguard the land.

In recent times, the Manhyia Palace has removed several chiefs from their positions due to their involvement in illegal mining activities.

Meanwhile, there have been multiple instances where chiefs have been removed from their positions due to their involvement in illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.”

For example, in February 2025, the Asantehene destooled Nana Kusi Baaye II, the Chief of Ohwim, over allegations of illegal mining and other misconduct. Similarly, in August 2024, three chiefs in the Ashanti Region were also destooled for their involvement in illegal mining.

The Asantehene has been quite firm in his stance against illegal mining, emphasizing the responsibility of traditional leaders to uphold the law and protect the land.

My concession is being looted by galamseyers – Otumfuo cries out

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has voiced strong concern over the unauthorized activities of illegal miners on his mining concession, resulting in extensive destruction.

He expressed disappointment that, despite government initiatives to curb illegal mining, the issue remains unresolved.

During a meeting with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on Friday, February 14, the Asantehene underscored the pressing need for more decisive action, pointing out its harmful consequences on both the environment and the economy.

He urged a comprehensive solution, including deploying security forces to safeguard mining areas, streamlining small-scale mining operations, and providing alternative economic opportunities for those involved in illegal mining.

He revealed that unlicensed miners have seized his mining concession at Akropong without his authorization.

“The site that was given to me has been invaded by illegal miners. Meanwhile, I had plans to give it out for proper mining. We must find a way to solve this crisis.”

The Asantehene highlighted the urgency of a comprehensive approach, including employment opportunities, to tackle illegal mining.

“These children who are engaged in galamsey need jobs. We need to assist them so they don’t go back to the sites.”

Otumfuo at the forefront of traditional measure to check Bawku conflict – Defence Minister

Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has acknowledged the critical role of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in leading traditional efforts to resolve the protracted Bawku conflict.

During a visit to the Asantehene on Friday, February 14, Dr. Boamah highlighted the importance of Otumfuo’s mediation in addressing the deep-rooted tensions in the area.

“Otumfuo is the traditional leader who has been leading and finding a traditional solution to the dispute,” he stated, underscoring the relevance of chieftaincy in conflict resolution.

The Defence Minister assured that the government is committed to supporting these traditional peace efforts with robust security interventions to restore stability.

This dual approach, combining traditional mediation with security enforcement, aims to tackle both the historical grievances fueling the dispute and the immediate threats to peace and safety in Bawku.

Dr. Boamah expressed optimism that the collaboration between the government and traditional authorities would yield meaningful results in resolving the conflict.

Renewed clashes have led to loss of lives and growing insecurity. One of the most tragic incidents occurred recently when a five-month-old baby girl was brutally killed by armed assailants. The child was reportedly snatched from her mother, who had been ambushed and assaulted, before being thrown to the ground.

This shocking act of violence adds to the rising death toll from the conflict, which has claimed 55 lives since October 2024, particularly along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway. Despite increased security presence, attacks continue to instill fear among residents and travelers.

He reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s firm commitment to working closely with Otumfuo and other stakeholders to ensure lasting peace in the region.

Otumfuo to take care of education of murdered Kotoko fan’s four children

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has taken responsibility for the children of the late Asante Kotoko fan, Francis Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley.

A report by GHOne TV on X (formerly Twitter) stated that the King has ensured the children’s education will be funded through his educational trust. However, the specific details of the support package were not disclosed.

Nana Pooley tragically lost his life after being stabbed during violent clashes following Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League match against Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Koramansah Park. The match, which ended in a 1-0 loss for Kotoko, was marked by rising tensions, with four red cards issued to players from both teams.

Unfortunately, tempers flared after the final whistle, leading to a brawl among rival fans that resulted in Frimpong’s death.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested four more suspects, bringing the total number of people in custody to seven. The new suspects include Isaac Ofosu, Augustine Yeboah, Elizabeth Ntiriwaa (also called “Akosua Black Chinese”), and Yaa Asantewaa.

Earlier, three individuals had already been arrested: Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the owner of Nsoatreman FC and a former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Joseph Kyeremeh, and Agyemang Duah Owusu.

During their court appearance at the Sunyani District Court ‘B,’ presided over by Judge Eric Daning, Baffour-Awuah and Kyeremeh were granted bail of GH¢500,000 each with three sureties. They have been charged with abetting murder under Sections 20(1) and 46 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).

However, Owusu, a police inspector, has been charged with murder and remains in custody.

I will need your counsel in addressing Ghana’s economic woes – Mahama to Otumfuo

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to meet with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as part of his approach to addressing the current economic challenges facing Ghana.

During the Akwasidae celebration at the Manhyia Palace on January 19, 2025, President Mahama highlighted the significant role the Asantehene played in assisting his previous government with tackling economic issues.

“Our nation, Ghana, is facing a dire economic crisis. While this is not the first time we have been in such a crisis, this particular one is characterised by a high rate of inflation, macroeconomic instability, a depreciating currency, and a debt default which has shut us out of the international credit market.

“It’s a more daunting challenge than we have ever experienced in our history. Your Royal Majesty, as a former president between 2013 and 2017, we faced macroeconomic instability, and I remember some of the obstacles we encountered in our efforts to bring stability to our economy and restore economic growth.

“I had the privilege of calling on you to use your influence and diplomacy to smooth the path towards prosperity and progress. Anytime I called on you, you didn’t hesitate. I would like to thank you for the cooperation I enjoyed with you at that time,” President Mahama stated.

He continued: “As we have inherited a difficult economic situation, I will be calling on you again from time to time. I know that anytime I call on you, you will not hesitate to work together to put our nation back on its feet.”

“We would like you to please remember always the undertakings and promises you have made. I implore you to fulfil all your promises to us in the great Asante Kingdom.

“We have absolute trust in you that you shall not let us down. All ongoing developmental projects within the kingdom and across all kingdoms, you will fulfil them,” the Paramount Chief of the Mampong Traditional Area, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, spoke on behalf of the Asantehene.

Sewua Hospital will meet its deadline under my watch – Mahama assures Otumfuo

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to ensure the prompt completion and operationalization of the Sewua Hospital in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking at the first Akwasidae celebration of the year at Manhyia Palace on Sunday, January 19, the President outlined his government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the 250-bed facility.

President Mahama recognized the critical role the Sewua Hospital will play in alleviating the overwhelming patient numbers at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), which is one of the largest and busiest hospitals in the Ashanti Region.

He further pointed out that KATH, serving not just the Ashanti Region but neighboring areas, is currently operating well beyond its capacity and in desperate need of renovations.

The President assured that the completion of Sewua Hospital would ease the pressure on KATH by relocating some patients, thus enabling the necessary renovations to proceed at KATH without affecting its day-to-day operations.

“The Sewua Hospital is not operational because there is no electricity, there is no water, and the road to the hospital has not been constructed. I wish to assure you that we will tackle it immediately and make sure that we can open the doors of that hospital so that it will ease the pressure on Komfo Anokye.

“We need to move some of the patients from Komfo Anokye to Sewua so that we can empty the infrastructure in Komfo Anokye and do the necessary renovations. It is difficult to do the renovations of Komfo Anokye when the hospital is working at full capacity.”

The Sewua Hospital has been embroiled in political and contractual disputes. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the facility before leaving office, a decision challenged by the project contractor, Euroget De-Invest S.A.

The contractor claimed the hospital was not prepared for commissioning, pointing to incomplete critical aspects of the project. This premature inauguration sparked public criticism and cast doubt on the government’s commitment to delivering fully operational healthcare infrastructure.

Don’t use crooked means to win Dec polls – Otumfuo tells Mahama

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to prioritize peace as the nation approaches the general elections.

Otumfuo advised Mahama to avoid any acts of defiance and to graciously accept the election results.

He emphasized the importance of respecting electoral laws and adhering to due process in Mahama’s bid to once again lead the country.

“Elections are not about violence. Everybody should vote peacefully and allow their agents to sign after the results have been counted.

“If we abide by those standards, I believe God will show us who should become the leader of the country. If God does not crown you king and you want to use force, it will not work.

“So, what I want to tell him is that, in the few days remaining, he should tell Ghanaians about his policies and explain them better to them. What you did for the Ashanti Region and what you will do also, use the remaining days to explain to them. We pray for him and bless him as well, that whatever he is looking for, God should provide it for him.”

John Dramani Mahama has refuted allegations suggesting he plans to scrap the Free Senior High School policy if he is elected president in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

The former president accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deliberately spreading misinformation.

In his address to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Mahama affirmed his dedication to the policy, highlighting that it originated during his tenure and would continue to be upheld under his leadership.

“So that thing they keep saying, Nana, you know me, you are one of those who nurtured me, and you know I don’t lie. So, I stand before you today and affirm that the lies being peddled that we will cancel Free SHS is a lie; there is no iota of truth in that,” he stated.

Mahama criticized the ruling party for neglecting development in the Ashanti Region, attributing this oversight to their confidence in the region’s strong support base. He pledged to prioritize the region’s progress if given the mandate to lead as president.

Seeking the Asantehene’s blessings, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to steering the nation back on a path of growth and sustainable development.

Prioritize Ghana’s peace! – Otumfuo to political parties, Ghanaians ahead of Dec polls

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to ensure a peaceful electoral process during the December 7, 2024, elections.

The Asantehene made this appeal when the President visited the Manhyia Palace to express gratitude to him and the people of Ashanti for their unwavering support.

In a separate engagement with the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, President Akufo-Addo cautioned that backing former President John Mahama in the upcoming elections could result in the Ashanti Region being overlooked, with key development projects potentially abandoned.

As part of his three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, the President visited the Manhyia Palace, where the Asantehene emphasized the importance of upholding peace during the December 7 elections.

“He has promised to ensure a peaceful election and I believe he will do exactly that. I also appeal to political parties and Ghanaians to prioritize Ghana’s peace as we go to the polls on December 7”, stated Otumfour.

The traditional leaders praised President Akufo-Addo for leading significant development initiatives in the Ashanti Region during a meeting with the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs. They conveyed appreciation for ongoing and finished initiatives and urged the chiefs to take these accomplishments into account while casting their votes.

“From 2017 to date, my government has appointed about 30 ministers and deputy ministers from the Ashanti region, a sharp contrast to the NDC’s 13 ministers during Mahama’s presidency and this will not change if he is voted into power again.

“I appeal to you to vote for Dr Bawumia if you want continued development in the region,” a report by channel1news.com quoted the President.

President Akufo-Addo urged the chiefs to continue their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, just as they have supported him over the past eight years, emphasizing the region’s importance to the party.

We’ll petition Otumfuo to prevent election manipulation in Ashanti region – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated its plan to petition Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, about an alleged plot to rig the upcoming elections in the Ashanti Region.

The NDC accuses Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, of being involved in this scheme, which they claim is being carried out under government directives.

The party argues that the plot is designed to influence the electoral process, beginning with the special voting on December 2.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, November 19, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, revealed that the party intends to seek the Asantehene’s intervention to avoid potential violence.

Mr Gyamfi highlighted that Brigadier General Opoku’s operations are based in Kumasi, and given Otumfuo’s deep commitment to peace in the region, the NDC hopes he will step in to address the situation.

“We are going to ensure that the King of the Ashanti people, who is very much interested in the peace of our nation and the peace of the processes leading to, during, and after the December 7 election, we will officially draw his attention to these developments because the headquarters of the operation of this guy [Brigadier General Michael Opoku] is Kumasi.

“And I know that the Otumfuo cherishes the peace that the people of Kumasi and Ashanti region enjoy, and he will want to take an interest in this matter and call this guy to order.”

I will do everything to mend my relationship with Otumfuo – Dormaahene

Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II has made a commitment to address and resolve any misunderstandings or disputes with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

This pledge was made during a recent courtesy call from the presidential candidate for the New Force party, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar.

Cheddar’s visit to the Dormaahene’s palace was part of his regional campaign tour, during which he advocated for peace and reconciliation between the two traditional leaders.

The efforts to foster dialogue highlight the significance of unity within the region’s traditional leadership structures.

“Otumfuo and Osagyefo are two significant names, and both are chiefs. If it weren’t for the blessings of God, they wouldn’t have become chiefs. But things happen for a reason.

“I came here with drinks to appease you, and I will plead on behalf of Otumfuo as well to cease all grudges between the two of you.

“I, Nana Kwame Bediako, am offering my head for the sake of peace. If the two of you are united, we have peace in Ghana. But if there is separation, then we are also separated. What I am asking them to do, if it doesn’t become possible, they should behead me,” Cheddar said.

Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II assured that his commitment to fostering peace with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will be steadfast and impactful.

He emphasized that his dedication to reconciliation and harmony will not go unfulfilled.

“What he said has left me speechless. He has addressed issues that our leaders in the country cannot talk about. Who doesn’t want peace? I have thought about it, and I promise him that his efforts won’t be in vain. If not for Ghana’s 1992 constitution that prohibits chiefs from engaging in politics, I would have declared my support for him,” he said.

Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II has openly criticized Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II regarding specific traditional authorities that he believes the Asantehene lacks the entitlement to oversee.

Despite not having a clear reason for their discord, it is evident that the relationship between the two leaders has been strained, marked by instances of reported ‘bad blood’ over the years.

Recently, Dormaahene’s criticisms have focused on the controversial elevation of Fiaprehene to paramountcy, a move he contends exceeds the Asantehene’s authority.

This ongoing dispute highlights the deep-seated tensions between the two traditional rulers, reflecting broader issues within the chieftaincy that have attracted media attention.

Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has committed to resolving any lingering disputes with Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

This pledge came during a visit from Nana Kwame Bediako, widely known as Cheddar, who is running as the presidential candidate for the New Force.

While on a regional tour to share his campaign messages, Cheddar stopped by the Dormaahene’s palace, where he expressed his hopes for a harmonious relationship between the Dormaahene and the Otumfuo.

“Otumfuo and Osagyefo are two significant names, and both are chiefs. If it weren’t for the blessings of God, they wouldn’t have become chiefs. But things happen for a reason.

In response, Dormaahene pledged to ensure that his efforts to maintain peace with Otumfuo would not be in vain.

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has been openly critical of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, regarding certain traditional authorities he believes fall outside the Asantehene’s jurisdiction.

Though there is no specific cause cited for their differences, it is widely acknowledged that the Dormaahene and the Asantehene have not enjoyed a cordial relationship. This tension has surfaced on multiple occasions and has been the subject of media coverage over the years.

In the latest dispute, Dormaahene has challenged Otumfuo’s decision to elevate the Fiaprehene to paramount status, contending that this action exceeds the Asantehene’s rightful authority.

  • Otumfuo destools Denyasehemaa for violating sacred great oath of Ashanti kingdom

Otumfuo destools Denyasehemaa for violating sacred great oath of Ashanti kingdom

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has destooled Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II –  the Queen of Denyase Traditional Council in the Ashanti region.

This move comes following  allegations that the Queen Mother had violated the sacred great oath of the Ashanti kingdom through treacherous invocation. The ruling was handed down during a meeting of the Asanteman Council on October 14.

“In safeguarding the Golden Stool and the great oath entrusted to me, I must ensure fidelity to our traditions,” the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II declared in his ruling adding:

“As the elders have said that we don’t invoke the great oath in vain, when I became the Asantehene I was told I did not have a mother, a brother, or anybody, and the only thing I have is the Golden Stool and the Great Oath to protect.”

He further stated: “I really like the Queen…I call her my old lady, but going against the great oath, I have to go by what the tradition says. If I forgive her, then who should I punish if the person does the same? We have to tell the truth to people. She is at fault; she is a family member. If she doesn’t have the money, she can come, and I will give her money, but to violate the great oath, no, she can’t sit on the throne anymore.”

During the proceedings, Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II appealed for clemency. However, the majority of the council members opposed her plea.

“Nana, we cannot forgive her because the great oath must be paramount in all our dealings, so violating the terms of the oath is unacceptable,” one of the chiefs said.

Adding his voice on the matter, the Goasomanhene opined: “My biggest fear here is the oath that is involved, so pleading on her behalf will be difficult because the sacred oath is involved.”

“Otumfuo linguist, all the chiefs have said that they cannot work with her, so she must go,” another affirmed.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized the sanctity of the great oath and the imperative to uphold Asante customs without exception.

The controversy surrounding Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II’s royal lineage came to a head after a committee was set up to investigate her royalty status after she was challenged by Achiasebaapanin Nana Akua Afriyie, who invoked the Great Oath in support of her stance.

Nana Akua Afriyie’s accusation of challenging the royalty of Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II was rebutted by her in a counter-invocation of the Great Oath.

Whereas Nana Afriyie denied having any blood relations with Denyasehemaa, the latter said otherwise. The parties were therefore charged to make available their traditional family trees for review by the committee.

Upon further checks, the committee found out that Denyasehemaa was indeed not a royal and not related to Achiase.

After the committee presented the report to Otumfuo, he noted that Denyasehemaa could have saved herself by avoiding a counter-invocation.

“Denyasehemaa could have used peace to her advantage, but she chose quite the opposite. And since the investigation has brought this to light, I have no choice but to put the stool where it truly belongs.”

Denyasehemaa was therefore fined four rams for the counter-invocation of the Great Oath in vain during the committee’s sitting.

Flagbearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), Dr. Hassan Ayariga, has urged the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to use his influence to put an end to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the Ashanti Region.

Ayariga argued that Otumfuo’s authority in the region surpasses that of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, making the Asantehene well-placed to address the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.

His appeal comes amid growing concerns over the damage illegal mining is causing to water bodies, farmlands, and cocoa plantations.

In an interview on Oyerepa TV on October 9, 2024, Ayariga stressed that no mining company can operate in the Ashanti Region without the approval of the Asantehene, suggesting that a directive from Otumfuo could immediately halt illegal mining operations.

“There is only one person in Ghana who can stop illegal mining, and that person is the Asantehene, the people of Ashanti respect their King more than they respect the President because their King is for life. If the Asantehene says, stop galamsey, everything will stop,” oyerepaonline.com quoted him to have said.

He continued, “…Nobody, no mining company can mine in the Ashanti Region without the authority of Asantehene. That company dares not.

“So, if Asantehene wants to stop people from mining in Ashanti because they are destroying his water bodies, he should just make one call and tell his boys to stop them and they’ll stop because he’s more powerful to stop them than even the president of Ghana.

“The king and his people must protect their country because their children and grandchildren will suffer the consequences of this menace. If there’s too much destruction of water bodies, farmlands, and cocoa lands, the Asantehene should step in and make that call to stop galamsey.”

NDC introduces Naana Opoku Agyemang to Otumfuo after complaint

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) only introduced its Vice-Presidential candidate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, to him after he had expressed his displeasure about not being informed earlier.

Speaking during a meeting in Kumasi on Friday, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II disclosed that he had initially learned about Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s selection to partner John Dramani Mahama in the 2020 elections but was surprised that the NDC delayed in formally presenting her to him.

This was even more puzzling since her nomination came before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) selected Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as their candidate.

“I heard of it when Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was selected to support John Dramani Mahama, but I am surprised the party never bothered to introduce her to me since she was selected even before the NPP selected their Vice-Presidential candidate,” the Asantehene said.

Otumfuo went on to say that he had confronted Prof. Opoku-Agyemang during the Fetu Afahye festival in Cape Coast about the NDC’s failure to introduce her. “She promised me it would be done, and I am happy that they have now done the right thing,” he added.

In April this year, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) officially outdoored its presidential running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang for the 2024 elections.

The Asantehene used the occasion to emphasize his support for both the NDC and the NPP, making it clear that his primary focus is on Ghana’s development rather than political allegiances. He urged both political parties to engage in clean campaigns and to prioritize policies that would benefit the nation.

“The NPP has selected Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and it’s true that he is a son of Asanteman, but I want to say on authority that you are all my children, and I support all of you. What we want is development,” Otumfuo remarked.

He further encouraged Prof. Opoku-Agyemang to back John Mahama in his bid for the presidency, as that was the expectation of many Ghanaians. “What we all want as Ghanaians is to have a leader who has the people of Ghana at heart,” he stated.

On her part, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang apologized for the delay in her introduction to Otumfuo and sought his blessings and guidance as she supported Mahama in the upcoming elections.

“Not long ago, I was selected to support John Dramani Mahama, and I am ready to do just that. I am happy that you have accepted me and given me guidance,” she said, adding that she looked forward to Otumfuo’s counsel as the elections approached.

‘Take your curse away’ – Manhyia Palace rejects Afia Pokuaa’s apology to Otumfuo

Manhyia Palace has refused to accept the apology rendered by Agoo TV journalist Afia Pokua and host of Onua TV’s ‘Bribi Gye Gye Wo,’ Mona Gucci for comments perceived as disrespectful to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asanteman.

Afia Pokua and Mona Gucci, appeared before Manhyia on Monday, September 23, to issue their formal apologies. In a widely circulated video, Afia Pokuaa was observed kneeling before several Asante chiefs.

However, the authorities at Manhyia Palace declined their apology

“We don’t need anything from this child over here. She should take her sins away,” a chief said.

The controversy began when Afia Pokua criticized the Asantehene for what she viewed as his silence during ongoing conflicts involving his subjects and other tribes, including the Bonos on Mona Gucci’s show.

Afia Pokua had voiced her frustrations regarding what she perceived as the Ashantis’ superiority over other tribes,

Her remarks sparked considerable outrage within the Ashanti community, leading to public condemnation and backlash from community leaders, including sub-chiefs and queen mothers.

Realizing the gravity of their remarks, both journalists turned to social media to express their remorse but recognized the importance of a more direct apology.

In a live broadcast, Mona Gucci admitted her regret for permitting Afia Pokua to air such controversial opinions.

“When my guest came on the show, she made statements that hurt many. We are using this same platform to apologise. To our viewers around the world, including the Ashantis, we are truly sorry. We acknowledge your pain and concerns regarding this issue. I, Monalisa Abigail Sefakor Semeha, plead for your forgiveness. I apologise for everything that has transpired.

“The Asantehene is our father, and Asanteman is our family. Please forgive us,” Mona Gucci said.

Visibly emotional, Afia Pokua offered a lengthy apology to the Asantehene and the entire Ashanti kingdom, both locally and internationally. Dressed in funeral attire and on the verge of tears, she bowed deeply as she conveyed her sincere regret.

She extended her apologies further, recognizing the embarrassment her comments caused the Kwahumanhene and the people of Kwahu.

“I also apologise to the Kwahumanhene. I have brought shame upon you. My words have embarrassed the Chief and the people of Kwahu. Please forgive me; I promise not to let this happen again, “she added.

“I offer a sincere apology to the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. I did not speak well at all, and I accept my wrongs. I am his grandchild, child, and niece. I bow and ask for his forgiveness.

“I also apologise to the entire Asanteman, both home and abroad. Please forgive me. My actions were not intentional; I ask that, despite your anger, you find it in your heart to forgive me. I erred; I goofed,”  Afia Pokua said.

Video: Rare footage captures Otumfuo shedding tears in public

In Ghana, it’s uncommon for traditional leaders, particularly paramount chiefs, to express emotions openly, as doing so is often perceived as a weakness.

An unspoken expectation is that these leaders should maintain composure, regardless of the circumstances.

However, there are instances when prominent chiefs have broken this tradition, showing vulnerability in public while being discreetly supported by their followers.

For example, Nana Akwasi Bosompra, the Paramount Chief of Goaso, nearly cried during a public address in November 2023, expressing his frustration over the lack of progress in his communities, but his aides quickly intervened to shield him.

Similarly, the revered Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was supported by his subjects when he became visibly emotional at a durbar held by the Ga State, ensuring that his tears remained unseen by the public.

A video shared by Banadahene TV on X, shared by the Asante Nation, has shown that Asantehene is indeed human. The King of Asanteman can be seen shedding tears in the video.

According to Asante Nation, the event where the Otumfuo was captured shedding tears was the burial of his mother, the late Asantehemaa Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem.

“He is human. As human as he is, the day grief shadowed his soul, he shed a tear as a human being would. The night his mother, his first love, Asantehemaa Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem, was laid in state. Emotions make us all human,” the video caption read.

Stop attacking Otumfuo with your distasteful acts – APC cautions critics

The Asante Professionals Club (APC) has expressed its deep concern over the rising incidents of ethnocentric attacks targeting peace-loving Asantes and, most notably, the revered Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

In a strongly worded statement, the APC condemned these unwarranted acts, calling on all Ghanaians to reject divisive rhetoric that undermines national unity and respect.

The APC emphasized that such attacks not only offend the Asante people but also pose a threat to the core values of unity and harmony that bind the country together.

“As proud Asantes, we are resolute in our commitment to safeguarding the dignity and heritage of our people. We stand for unity, strength, and cultural pride, with our rich traditions rooted in a centralized governance system built on respect for customs and values,” the statement noted.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the club pointed out, is not just a symbol of Asanteman but a figure of national importance whose leadership transcends ethnic boundaries.

“Our King, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, symbolizes the cultural heritage and unity of Asanteman. As the custodian of our traditions, he occupies a role of immense cultural and spiritual significance, providing leadership, wisdom, and moral guidance to the Asante community and beyond,” the APC emphasized.

The APC further highlighted Otumfuo’s pivotal contributions to national development over his 25-year reign, noting his commitment to advancing peace, education, and social cohesion throughout Ghana. His initiatives, such as the Otumfuo Educational Fund, have benefited numerous Ghanaians, including non-Asantes, underscoring his reputation as a unifying national leader.

“Otumfuo’s kindness and empathy transcend the boundaries of Asanteman, extending to all corners of the country, reflecting his deep commitment to national unity,” the club added.

One example of this is his leadership in the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, a major healthcare institution serving the northern sector of the country.

The APC also reminded critics that Kumasi, the heart of the Asante Kingdom, has long been known for its hospitality and inclusivity, allowing non-Asantes to live freely and engage directly with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. His reign, the group stated, has been marked by respect, progress, and inclusivity, with a legacy that promotes national peace and development.

As part of its message, the APC cautioned critics to cease their “distasteful acts” of attacking Otumfuo and Asantes with divisive rhetoric.

“We urge all peace-loving Ghanaians to join us in rejecting any divisive or ethnocentric rhetoric that seeks to erode the peace, respect, and unity that are the bedrock of our society,” the statement concluded.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s visit during the Fetu Festival in Cape Coast, was marked by an unforgettable event involving a young boy who caught the king’s attention with his energetic welcome dance.

The boy, fondly called Chief Justice, performed a traditional routine, waving a red Asafo flag that read “Akwaaba Otumfuo” to greet the Asantehene.

In a touching moment, Otumfuo invited the boy to sit closer to him.

When the boy needed to use the restroom, he boldly asked the king to hold his flag until he returned.

With a brief exchange, the boy passed the flag to Otumfuo and left. The surrounding chiefs burst into laughter at the boy’s audacity, but Otumfuo, smiling, held the flag graciously.

One of the chiefs offered to relieve Otumfuo of the flag, but the king politely declined, choosing to keep it until the boy came back to retrieve it.

Immediately after bolting, some subchiefs and security personnel could not hide their shock over what happened. A subchief tried to take the flag from the Asantehene but Otumfuo prevented him. The child returned and took the flag from the Asantehene.

This innocent act of the child has left X users excited and baffled despite the admission of how wrong the child’s actions were. They noted that per customs and traditions, it is wrong for a child to interact with an adult using the left hand. They also shared that the Asantehene cannot be tasked by any individual.

We need to address galamsey aggressively – Otumfuo to GBA

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has lauded Ghana Bar Association (GBA) President Yaw Acheampong Boafo for taking a strong stand against illegal mining (galamsey).

His remarks were made during the GBA’s annual conference in Kumasi.

During a dinner at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo shared his deep concern over the pollution of the River Pra, which he had witnessed firsthand.

Describing the situation as “embarrassing,” he called for immediate and decisive action to address the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

“I want to congratulate your president on his courageous statement on galamsey this morning at KNUST. Galamsey is an environmental enemy to this nation. What could be more serious for any people than to have their entire water supply at risk?” the Asantehene remarked.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II encouraged the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to dedicate part of its five-day conference to establishing a panel that would visit communities heavily impacted by illegal mining.

He believes that such a tour would offer the association a comprehensive view of the crisis and foster discussions on appropriate legal responses.

“I think as lawyers, you should find space in this five-day conference to set up a panel and take a quick tour of the communities where galamsey is most prevalent. See the extent of the crisis we face, and hopefully, you will deliberate on how the law should respond,” he said.

The Asantehene also raised concerns about the lack of accountability for those who poison water bodies with toxic chemicals like mercury, questioning why such individuals are not facing any punishment.

“As I see it, if an individual poisons the water source of a community, they are liable for the consequences under the law. What does the law do when one pours mercury into the same water supply, knowing fully well it can kill?” he asked.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II voiced his disappointment over the persistent environmental degradation and urged a united response from all societal sectors to tackle the crisis.

He stressed the need for organizations such as the GBA, the Ghana Medical Association, and universities, particularly Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to come together and spearhead a national campaign against illegal mining.

“The Ghana Bar Association, the Ghana Medical Association, and the universities, particularly KNUST, should come together to champion a new path to tackle this emergency,” he urged.

Sharing his personal experience, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II recounted a recent visit to Cape Coast, where he made a stop at the River Pra.

He described the river’s condition as deeply alarming.

“In fact, on my way to Cape Coast, I stopped at the River Pra. I’m afraid I have to tell you that what I saw there was so embarrassing. As a nation, how can we allow this to happen to us? I don’t know, but we have to fight this—no matter what,” he reiterated.

Wirempehene dethroned by Otumfuo for breaching sacred Asante oath

On Monday, September 2, 2024, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, destooled Wirempehene Nana Opia Mensah II for violating the esteemed Asante Sacred Oath (Ntamkɛseɛ).

This action was taken during a session of the Kumasi Traditional Council held at the Manhyia Palace, where Nana Opia Mensah II faced reprimand for his blatant disrespect towards sacred traditions.

The former chief, aged 90 and a former Member of Parliament who had served for 54 years, lost his title for distorting historical facts for personal gain, thereby breaching both statutory and customary laws.

“Nana Opia, you knowingly and deceitfully invoked the Great Oath, despite being fully aware that the stool did not rightfully belong to you. You deliberately challenged its ownership, attempting to exploit your long reign to conceal your illegitimacy.

“However, by misusing the Great Oath for personal gain, you have forfeited your claim to the stool. Your actions have left you no choice but to relinquish the throne,” Otumfuo declared.

As part of the symbolic act of his removal from office, Nana Opia Mensah II’s traditional slippers were immediately taken off, signifying his destoolment according to custom.

This decision came after the Kumasi Traditional Council reviewed a detailed report on August 15, 2024.

The report revealed that the Aduana Clan, to which Nana Opia Mensah II belongs, does not have a legitimate claim to the royal house, as it is the Oyoko Clan that rightfully holds the throne.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has removed Nana Gyau Baffour Atuonin, the Gyasehene of Sabronum, along with two other chiefs from their positions for their involvement in illegal mining activities.

The decision effectively strips them of their titles and duties.

This action comes in response to protests from local youth and residents, who petitioned the Asanteman Traditional Council about the severe damage to farmlands and water bodies caused by illegal mining.

On Monday, the Asantehene summoned the Gyasehene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene to the Manhyia Palace to address their participation in these illicit activities. The affected chiefs are Nana Gyau Baffour Atuonin (Gyasehene of Sabronum), Nana Osei Kwadwo (Akyeamehene), and Nana Tabiri Gyansah (Baamuhene).

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II referred to a National Bureau of Investigation report that followed his order for an inquiry into illegal mining in Sabronum.

He has warned that further engagement in such activities could lead to their arrest.

The recent removal follows disappointment among Sabronum’s youth, who were dismayed when the chiefs failed to address the issue of illegal mining during their appearance before the Asanteman Traditional Council.

A new leader has been appointed to oversee the Sabronum community’s affairs. The Asantehene’s action underscores his commitment to tackling illegal mining and holding traditional rulers accountable within the Asante Kingdom.

  • Revealed: Otumfuo was informed about Napo’s running mate role 2 months before Akufo-Addo

Revealed: Otumfuo was informed about Napo’s running mate role 2 months before Akufo-Addo

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, in his latest book, The President Ghana Never Got, reveals intriguing details about how Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, was chosen as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The book uncovers that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was privy to this decision a full two months before President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was officially informed.

According to Awuni, President Akufo-Addo was surprised to learn about Bawumia’s selection from external sources rather than his own advisors. The revelation that Otumfuo knew of Bawumia’s decision weeks before it reached the President underscores the complexity of the situation.

“The Asantehene had mentioned it to the President. Akufo-Addo was shocked to hear the news at his next door from someone about 250 kilometres away. But this was not accidental,” the book quotes, according to MyJoyOnline.com.

Three weeks prior to Bawumia’s formal communication with the President, the Asantehene had already disclosed the choice during a conversation, leaving Akufo-Addo taken aback. Manasseh Azure Awuni notes that Bawumia had also consulted former President John Agyekum Kufuor before informing the President.

“The information about Bawumia’s choice of running mate was more secure with the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace than in Akufo-Addo’s Jubilee House and the state intelligence agency he trusted to conduct the research,” the book further reveals.

Manasseh recounts how NAPO had initially expressed his intentions to contest but stepped aside to support Bawumia when he learned of his candidacy. This gesture left a significant impression on Bawumia, who then earmarked NAPO for the running mate position.

Although NAPO was not considered the ideal candidate due to perceptions of arrogance, he was ultimately chosen because of his strong political ties, especially his connection to the Ashanti Region, which was seen as a crucial factor.

Interestingly, the book also notes that President Akufo-Addo and his family had hoped for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to be selected as the running mate. Initially, Bawumia preferred Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, the former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, for the role, but NAPO’s political standing made him the final choice.

Don’t fight for what doesn’t belong to you – Dormaahene to Otumfuo

Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has said that he has always shown respect towards Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, however, he believes that Otumfuo should not claim authority over territories that are not rightfully within his jurisdiction.

This comes on the back of the decision by Fiaprehene, Obrempong Professor Kyem Amponsah II, to join the Asanteman Traditional Council.

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, explained that Fiaprehene owes allegiance to the paramount chief of Odumase and that the paramount chief of Odumase exercises control over Fiapre and not Otumfuo.

“Fiapre is not under the authority of Otumfuo. It is not Otumfuo’s blood. What I know is that he is from Denkyira and ended up at Kumasi Number 1 due to wars. I cannot make him a paramount chief. The only person who can do that is the paramount chief of Dumase Number One.

There are people staying elsewhere and causing trouble in Dormaa land. I have never disrespected Otumfuo, but he shouldn’t fight for what does not belong to him,” this he said while addressing his community members over the weekend.

Otumfuo cannot make Fiaprehene a paramount chief – Dormaahene

Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has stated that the responsibility does not lie on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, to elevate the Fiaprehene to the status of a paramount chief.

Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II explained that although the Asantehene is recognized as a paramount chief according to Ghana’s constitution, he is not entitled to appoint another paramount chief in an area beyond his jurisdiction.

“The final authority in the chieftaincy rank is the paramount chief. There is no authority beyond the paramount chief. Otumfuo is a paramount chief, so he cannot lord over another paramount chief.”

“So, I want to plead with the Fiaprehene that Otumfuo cannot make him a paramount chief. As long as I remain president of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Otumfuo cannot install a paramount chief. It is not possible. Even if the court says otherwise, I will not obey and I’m willing to go to jail for that.”

“The Fiaprehene is on Bono land, so he should come to us so that we seek forgiveness from the ancestors for him. Fiapre is not under the authority of Otumfuo. It is not Otumfuo’s blood. What I know is that he is from Denkyira and ended up at Kumasi Number 1 due to wars. I cannot make him a paramount chief.”

“The only person who can do that is the paramount chief of Dumase Number One. There are people staying elsewhere and causing trouble in Dormaa land. I have never disrespected Otumfuo, but he shouldn’t fight for what does not belong to him,” he said this while addressing his community over the weekend.

Recounting the genesis of the former energy minister’s journey to the position of running mate, right from his involvement in decisions regarding the Manhyia- South Member of Parliament’s (MP) education and even the critical role he played in the minister’s decision to contest the seat after former Hon Kwame Addo Kuffour tenure came to an end in 2008.

“My son and grandson, his dad was my brother, as I ascended the throne he has become my grandson.
I birthed and nurtured him with his dad.
Even his fees I paid and he became a doctor then later went to Holland for furtherance of his studies.

He came back after his graduation that he was going back abroad to further his education then his dad was alive.
Then we all said won’t you come and give injection and take a break from your endless education journey? He then said he’s left with one more.

He returned and he stayed in Accra for sometime; that was when Kuffour was president.
He then came again to express his interest to join the race for the Manhyia South seat as the then MP Hon Kwame Addo Kuffour was stepping bowing out.

His dad directed him to seek my approval which I later gave; after he told me that was what he wanted….” Otumfuo recounted during the presentation of Dr Bawumia’s running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on July 9, 2024.

  • NAPO: The Grandson of Asantehene, a reason behind his choosing as Bawumia’s running mate?

NAPO: The Grandson of Asantehene, a reason behind his choosing as Bawumia’s running mate?

With an official announcement anticipated soon, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is poised to be named as the presidential running mate by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 general elections.

Political analysts and supporters of Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasize that his selection is pivotal in rallying support and strengthening the party’s dominance in the Ashanti Region.

They believe his nomination carries added significance due to his ties with the Ashanti royal family and the Manhyia Palace.

    NAPO’s connection with Manhyia

NAPO was born to Ohenena Kwame Kyeretwie and Madam Elizabeth Akosua Nyarko. His father, one of the many sons of the 14th Asantehene, Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II, made significant contributions during his reign.

Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie played a key role in the establishment of Prempeh College, a well-regarded all-boys boarding school in Kumasi. He also donated land for the creation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which honored him with an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1969.

As the son of the Asantehene, Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie served as the chief of Apagya in the Afigya Kwabre District for more than forty years until his passing on June 23, 2013.

    Leveraging royalty for political support

The Manhyia Palace, home to the Asantehene, stands not just as a physical landmark but as a central hub of cultural and political influence in the Ashanti Region.

NAPO’s deep-rooted connection with Manhyia has shaped both his personal identity and political career significantly.

As a direct descendant of Ashanti royalty, NAPO carries the weight of tradition and the expectations that come with his heritage.

His nomination as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate is seen as a strategic move that resonates strongly with the people of the Ashanti Region, who view him as a symbol of their values and aspirations.

The Ashanti Region has long been a stronghold for the NPP, and NAPO’s candidacy is expected to bolster this support even further. His royal lineage, combined with his political expertise, positions him uniquely within the party and makes him a compelling choice for voters.

In terms of political experience, NAPO has served as a Member of Parliament since 2009 and held the pivotal role of Minister for Education during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term.

His tenure as education minister was marked by significant achievements, notably the implementation of the government’s flagship Free Senior High School policy.

Currently, NAPO serves as the Minister for Energy, overseeing the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of energy policies, as well as coordinating activities across Energy Sector Agencies.

He will face off against Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who also boasts a distinguished career as an education minister under a previous NDC administration.

A/R: Jurors’ strike delays proceedings for Otumfuo’s Akyempimhene murder case, 8 others

The murder case involving Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s Akyempimhene and eight other murder and rape cases being heard at the High Court in Kumasi have been halted due to a strike by jurors in the Ashanti region.

The jurors have stopped court proceedings once again due to unpaid allowances.

They previously went on strike in November 2023 for several weeks but returned to work after Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo promised to resolve their arrears following a meeting in Kumasi.

Despite assurances of timely payments, the issue remains unresolved months later. Jurors are now on strike over outstanding allowances dating from August 2023 to May 2024, citing financial difficulties caused by the delay.

Albert Ackah, the jurors’ spokesperson in the Ashanti region, reiterated their plea for prompt payment “Yes, it is true that we are unable to come to court because of our allowance. Our allowances always delay until we take action before we receive our allowance. This is not good; it is not proper for us to always chase our allowance before we get it.

“Today, we have nine cases and because we couldn’t come due to non-payment of our allowance, the cases couldn’t come on. So please, I am appealing to the government to release money to the judicial service, so that they can pay their jurors so that they can return to court. Nobody ever should say that it is the jurors who delay the cases.

“So, this small, tiny allowance that we receive here, why always we need to follow, talk until these allowances are received?

During her previous meeting with jurors, Chief Justice Torkornoo suggested they use their salaries from other jobs to cover transportation costs, as many are public sector retirees. However, jurors argue their roles as jurors and their personal finances should be distinct, emphasizing the need for prompt allowance payments.

“Most of them were in the jury system before they retired. They are receiving only a retirement package, or better still, their pension salary. They are using this money to upkeep their houses and their homes.”

“If you continue making known and explaining the policies you want to bring on board if elected and if they are true and God permits and Ghanaians listen and give you the nod, I am sure you will do them for Ghana to grow for us.
