I’m worried Sarkodie isn’t getting enough shows to play – MC Portfolio

A well-known master of ceremony (MC) and entertainment pundit based in Kumasi,  Portfolio has raised concerns about the apparent decline in music concert bookings for Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie.

In a recent social media post on Monday, April 15, Portfolio pointed out that despite Sarkodie’s stature as a BET award-winning artist, he hasn’t been seen performing at many shows apart from those he organizes himself.

Portfolio questioned whether Sarkodie has become more selective about the shows he accepts or if event organizers are finding it difficult to meet his performance fees.

“I’ve been concerned about KING Sarkodie for some time now. Is he turning down offers or are they simply not coming his way? Is he being choosy or are promoters struggling to afford him? He rarely features at shows other than his own concerts and tours,” Portfolio’s post read.

Sarkodie, renowned as one of Africa’s most decorated rappers with over a decade of experience in the industry, has garnered numerous international accolades.

He was recently honoured as the Artist of the Decade at the Ghana Music Awards, a title previously awarded only to legendary artist Kwadwo Antwi.

Sarkodie criticizes gov’t over dumsor affecting newborns in hospitals

Michael Owusu Addo, known as Sarkodie, has weighed in on the recent power outages and their detrimental effects, particularly on healthcare services in the country.

He characterized the situation as a result of “misplaced priorities” by those in authority, in response to a viral video depicting a power outage at the Tema General Hospital.

Following the circulation of a video showing healthcare workers and mothers struggling to care for babies in darkness using phone lights, there has been increasing criticism of the government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Sarkodie shared the video on his Instagram story on March 27, 2024, less than 24 hours after it gained widespread attention, with the caption,”The Impact when we misplace priorities. we pray for these innocent babies.”

In the most recent footage from the hospital, several mothers can be seen using cloths to fan their babies to alleviate the heat in the wards following a power outage.

According to reports from Accra-based GHOne TV, a newborn is reported to have passed away due to the inconsistent power supply situation at the facility.

“Erratic power cut on Tuesday evening plunged the neonatal unit of Tema General Hospital into chaos, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of a newborn,” the channel posted on social media on March 27, 2024.

“The neonatal unit, where infants requiring intensive care are housed, relies heavily on electricity to sustain life-saving equipment such as oxygen support and emergency care devices. The generator intended to provide backup power for the unit is prone to shutting down when overloaded,” their post added.

At the time of this report’s filing, GhanaWeb was unable to reach hospital authorities to verify this assertion.

Requests for a power outage schedule from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have been rejected by both the utility provider and the Minister of Energy.

Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s statement that individuals seeking a timetable should create their own has sparked significant criticism online, despite the ministry’s clarification that the remarks were misunderstood.

Producer Hammer hints of return to music after hiatus

The well-known Ghanaian producer Hammer recently disclosed a major change in his strategy for the music business.

He revealed that, in contrast to custom, he no longer offers his beats for sale to musicians.

Rather than that, Hammer is now committed to helping up-and-coming musicians, having already made investments in the likes of Obrafour, Sarkodie, Kwaw Kese, ‘Ayigbe’ Edem, and numerous more.

Taking a break from the music scene to concentrate on his A1 bread business, Hammer cited the demanding nature of the industry and prolonged studio sessions as the reasons for his hiatus.

He clarified that the extended hours in the studio had taken a toll on his health, leading to his temporary withdrawal after collaborating with Tee Phlow.

However, the burgeoning investments in the music industry have enticed Hammer back into the studio.

Particularly influenced by Sarkodie’s encouragement, recognizing the industry’s evolving landscape, Hammer is gearing up for a comeback.

He is investing in new studio equipment with the intention of resuming his role not as a front man but as a dedicated developer of musical talent.

“Sarkodie was talking about it and how money was in the business, so last week I tendered my resignation, but my stock and equity are still intact, so I will get money from the A1 bread business. I am buying studio equipment because I gave out all my equipment. I wasn’t a front man but just a developer,” Hammer revealed in an interview on Onua TV.

As part of his renewed commitment, Hammer also plans to organize boot camps to train and nurture emerging talents in the music industry.

The artist emphasized how this realization marked a turning point in his career, causing him to reevaluate his contributions to the music scene and place a higher value on his talent and performances.

  • Tema’s Hip-Hop Exodus: What happened to the Trailblazers?

Tema’s Hip-Hop Exodus: What happened to the Trailblazers?

In the vibrant tapestry of Ghana’s music scene, a perplexing narrative transcends the beats and rhymes, echoing the untold stories of exceptionally talented rappers who, despite their undeniable prowess, find themselves tethered to the sidelines of the industry.

As the spotlight gleams on a select few, the question looms large: what happened to some of the country’s most talented rappers? Why have they struggled to ascend the summit of their musical careers?

Over a decade ago, an army of rappers emerged from faraway Tema. They graced the Ghana music scene with their lyrical dexterity in mainly the Akan language and Pidgin (broken English). Even with the likes of Okyeame Kwame, Asem, OJ Blakk, Flowking Stone, Cabum, Kwaw Kese, Edem, et al. reigning at this time, one thing was sure: the entry of the boys from Tema was well-noticed among the group of people now known as Gen Z.

Circa 2010, this golden generation of Tema rappers came together for a Christmas rap carol – ‘Come Wine,’ a song that saw several of them take turns to flex their rap muscles on a Possigee beat and usher listeners into the festive celebration. D-Cryme, Sarkodie, Yaa Pono, Chris Waddle, Yaw Siki, Pope Skinny, Opanka, Keche, Stay Jay, Danso Abeam, and Macho Rapper were the most notable on that song.

Sarkodie has since then risen to even greater heights and is inspiring a new crop of artists working hard to make a name for themselves and surviving the muddy waters of Ghana’s music scene. Since the rise of the Tema music scene, he has become the most decorated rapper in Africa, winning multiple international and local awards and recording numerous hit songs. He also hosts one of the biggest Christmas Day concerts in Ghana.

For many of the rest, it seems to be a story of what could have been. Of course, a group like Keche must be commended for still being in the game in 2023. Also, Yaw Siki has retired from the music scene after surviving what could have been a fatal accident several years ago.

Stay Jay’s career was promising. Unfortunately, after about six hit songs, one of which can be considered to have introduced a new derogatory local term for women deemed promiscuous (Shashee), little has been heard of him.

Opanka was that guy! He initially made a significant impact by entering the mainstream music industry with a freestyle on Bradez’s Simple instrumental. His success translated into hits, show opportunities, and the promise of a bright future.

However, despite these early achievements, Opanka faced challenges fully capitalizing on his potential. While he seemed poised to become a distinguished emcee, his narrative parallels those shared by many others in the music industry, as highlighted in the song “Come Wine.” Some of his fans speculated that comparisons with Sarkodie might have affected his trajectory during that period.

D Cryme transitioned from the role of a hype man for Sarkodie to establishing his own identity in the music industry, marked by creating several hit songs. Despite an initially promising trajectory, he faced setbacks in his career. The introduction of Twi Pop, a fusion of Twi, Fante, and Pidgin with hip-hop elements, marked a significant moment in his career. His track “Kill Me Shy” from 13 years ago is still considered one of the biggest songs in his repertoire. However, despite these accomplishments, D Cryme’s career encountered challenges that hindered its continuous ascent.

Yaa Pono once held the title of the street king in Tema. His endearing presence stemmed from a blend of his humorous rap style and lively stage performances, making him a beloved figure among his fans. However, the current whereabouts or circumstances surrounding his career are shrouded in mystery.

There is no doubt that these men were talented. But the question remains: Why have they struggled to ascend the summit of their musical careers?

A simple answer may be that they did not work hard enough. But that answer is very insufficient and overly simplistic.

As influential figures in the music industry increasingly intentionally showcase the country through music, a necessity arises to thoroughly examine these scenarios and assist budding talents. Is the challenge rooted in a deficiency of strategic planning, support systems, or infrastructure? Alternatively, do artists find contentment with their accomplishments in relatively brief careers?

The resurgence of Ghana’s music scene is currently centered in Kumasi, marked by the rise of the widely used term ‘Kumerica.’ The Asakaa Boys have embarked on a successful tour, achieving chart-topping success, and are gearing up for their inaugural concert in Kumasi. Figures like Yaw TOG, Kofi Jamar, Y-Pee, and Oseikrom Sikanii, among others, are thriving in their endeavors, showcasing exceptional talent from the Golden City.

Hopefully, in 2033, this question won’t be asked within the context of the rising rappers from Kumasi.

  • Tema’s Hip-Hop Exodus: Mysteries behind disappearing trailblazers unveiled!

Tema’s Hip-Hop Exodus: Mysteries behind disappearing trailblazers unveiled!

In Ghana’s music mosaic, some talented rappers from Tema struggle in the shadows. Sarkodie’s success contrasts with their unrealized potential. Why?

A decade ago, Tema’s rap battalion, featuring D-Chryme, Sarkodie, Yaa Pono, and more, emerged, leaving an imprint. Despite Sarkodie’s monumental rise, others faced challenges.

For Keche, still active in 2023, and Yaw Siki, retired after a near-fatal accident, their paths diverged.

Stay Jay’s promising career waned after introducing a controversial term. Opanka’s early impact waned, partly due to comparisons with Sarkodie.

D Cryme transitioned from Sarkodie’s hype man, achieving initial success with Twi Pop. Yaa Pono, once Tema’s street king, faces a mysterious career status.

While talent is evident, their struggles raise questions. Is it merely insufficient effort, or deeper issues like strategic planning and support systems?

Ghana’s music resurgence in Kumasi Rappers, with ‘Kumerica’ and thriving acts like Yaw TOG, suggests a dynamic shift. As the industry evolves, will Kumasi’s rising stars face the same challenges in 2033?

It takes a strong head – Sarkodie on impact of social media attacks

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has raised concerns about the challenges and toxicity prevalent on social media, emphasising the need for users to be mindful of their engagement on these platforms and the potential impact on their well-being.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sarkodie highlighted the profound influence of social media and the dynamics of user interactions.

He underscored the complexities presented by the digital world, noting that navigating this landscape requires strong mental resilience.

Sarkodie further offered a valuable piece of advice to social media users, urging individuals to use these platforms judiciously and to be aware of their limitations.

“Social media changed how we deal with reality. Only the strong will survive the mental battle. Note: only use it for what it’s worth,” he posted.

Sarkodie’s post aligns with remarks from various public figures concerning the impact of social media on their mental well-being. Notable personalities such as Kuami Eugene, Kidi, and Nana Ama McBrown have openly discussed the challenges they face, including persistent comparisons and personal attacks from social media trolls.

These situations have, in turn, contributed to their struggles with their mental health.

Mortuary work one of the hardest – Sarkodie on worker’s strike

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has responded to the notice issued by the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) regarding a potential strike next week if their concerns are not addressed.

Expressing his opinion, Sarkodie warned that if the government neglects the situation and allows the mortuary workers to proceed with the planned strike, it could have severe repercussions for the nation, especially considering the death rate.

Sarkodie emphasised that mortuary work, despite being one of the most underrated professions in the country, plays a vital role in ensuring that deceased individuals receive proper treatment before their burial.

Sarkodie called on the government to meet the demands of the Mortuary Workers Association and furnish them with the requisite equipment needed to discharge their duties effectively. “This will affect us heavily…

“Yes, I wouldn’t want a strike, especially from “them” but I understand… this is one of the underrated/underpaid jobs yet one of the hardest and riskiest. They deserve the right salary, equipment and environment to work effectively … We can escape some services in life but this,” he wrote on his X page.

His reaction comes after the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) served notice of an impending strike starting next week.

According to a letter addressed to four ministries and three state agencies, MOWAG said its intended action was in line with activating Section 159 of Act 651 (2003).

“Our position is that all Mortuary Workers in Ghana shall lay down their tools starting on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, until all matters already in your domain are resolved. “This is an exercise of rights, as the 1992 constitution of the Republic of Ghana stipulates. You are respectfully notified,” the letter read in part.

The ministries that received notifications included Health, Employment and Labour Relations, National Security, and Finance.

Additionally, copies were sent to the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, and the Registrar of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Authority.

The letter, signed by MOWAG General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan, has garnered humorous and critical reactions since it was shared on the social media platform of media personality Serwaa Amihere.

Kwame Dazdie: You have had a lot of collaborations, which one of them would you say gave you the biggest visibility?

Efya: I have worked with almost 120 artistes. So I think my hardest collaboration would be with Sarkodie because it was fire. It changed my language but it is cool.

Kwame Dadzie: How does it feel working with Sarkodie?

Efya: It was wonderful, such an amazing guy always coming through for the gang you know.

  • I gave Sarkodie a name with my award, his brand was weak – Dr UN ‘brags’

I gave Sarkodie a name with my award, his brand was weak – Dr UN ‘brags’

Organiser of the Global Blueprint Excellence Awards, Kwame Owusu Fordjour, who is widely known as Dr. UN, has asserted that he played a part in boosting Sarkodie’s popularity in the country.

According to him, Sarkodie’s fame in Ghana experienced a surge after his infamous UN award garnered significant attention, particularly when it became clear that the award scheme was not authentic.

Dr. UN, the organiser of the Global Blueprint Excellence Awards, also stated that he has had several interactions with Sarkodie after the event.

He emphasised that their relationship has not been as contentious as some people may perceive it to be.

“I have met Sarkodie several times after the awards; he is my fan. Do you know that I made him Sarkodie? His previous branding was not good enough. If it was not me, why does he trend with the awards?

“I made him trend all the time. After his issue with Yvonne Nelson, he was not popular until he used my trend and that is where the money is.

“Why is it that after my award, which was held three years ago, anytime the media interviews him, they hammer on my award?” he said in a video shared by Express GHTV on their Youtube channel.

When he was asked for his take on Sarkodie’s issue with Yvonne Nelson and what he makes of it, he said, “Sarkodie did not show responsibility as a man. In such situations, you have to man up and accept it whether you have money or not. Leaving her (Yvonne Nelson) to go through that trauma was not the best.”

Earlier in 2020, social media went wild after the likes of Sarkodie, D-Black, Berla Mundi, members of the academia, and some politicians fell for his fake UN award scam.
