  • Why Arsenal star Thomas Partey has the nickname Senegal

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has mentioned “Senegal” as the name he is referred to by persons close to him.

His nickname is very confusing to some Arsenal fans due to his Ghanaian nationality.

However, the 28-year-old was nicknamed by his dad back then whilst playing for his junior team in Ghana.

The name Senegal was bestowed on him after his playing style reminded his dad of his former friend and a former Ghana international Emmanuel ‘Armah Senegal’.

Armah Senegal was a force to reckon with when it came to the Black Star’s ability to construct solid defensive barriers during the ’90s.

Partey started off his career as a defender and played just like the former Black Stars defender, thus the reason behind his nickname.

The former Atletico Madrid midfielder has been in good form for Arsenal this season.

Partey capped his impressive performance with a goal against Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium in that 2-0 win.

After a difficult spell in his first season coupled with injuries, Partey is currently enjoying his Arsenal career with a series of brilliant performances.

He scored in his side’s 2-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday and is expected to play a big role in the game against title contenders Liverpool on Wednesday.

  • Thomas Partey was not rushed back from injury – Mikel Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insists Thomas Partey’s injury setback was not because he was rushed back by the club for their north London derby against Tottenham.

Partey will ‘miss the next few matches’ because of a recurrence of his recent thigh issue, Arteta confirmed on Wednesday ahead of their Europa League dead rubber with Dundalk.

The 2-0 defeat by Spurs was Partey’s first appearance in almost a month and Arteta said: ‘He did incredibly well and was very confident. We tested him three times and he had zero incidents.

He walked over to the touchline during the build-up to Harry Kane’s goal that put Spurs two goals up and was replaced by Dani Ceballos immediately after and just seconds before half-time. Spurs would go on to win the derby 2-0, returning to first place in the Premier League.

After the match Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta confirmed Party would have an MRI, saying he appeared to aggravate his previous injury.

“I applaud their first goal, it is world-class, but the second goal we are a man down, we leave a massive gap and they take advantage,” Arteta told the BBC.

“He [Thomas Partey] has to stay on the pitch. It looks like the same injury he has already had, he will have an MRI.”

Partey had been out of action since he was taken off in his side’s 3-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on November 8 and subsequently missed Premier League matches against Leeds and Wolves as well as the Europa League encounters against Molde and Rapid Vienna.

The Ghana international only returned to Arsenal training during the week and Arteta said after his side’s win against Rapid Vienna that the summer signing could feature against their city rivals.

Ahead of the game on Sunday, Arteta was asked about the 27-year-old’s inclusion in his starting XI.

He told Sky Sports: “We didn’t expect him to be fit for the game but he has been training well and [is] ready to play.”

Arsenal fell behind just 13 minutes into the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Son Heung-min led Spurs’ charge forward, combining with striker Kane before lashing past Bernd Leno from outside the box.

The Ghana international, who moved to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for €50 million during the summer, injured his thigh last month and only returned to the side on Sunday.

Partey pulled up injured shortly before half-time and was standing on the touchline when Spurs broke from their own box. Arteta then urged him back on to try to stop the counter-attack but the midfielder could only run a few yards before stopping.

Ahead of Partey, Spurs striker Harry Kane finished off Spurs’ sweeping attack, handing the Premier League leaders their two-goal cushion.

“I was trying to push him but I don’t think he realised the gravity of the situation when he left his position but that was probably because he was in a lot of pain,” Arteta told reporters.

“Suddenly they are coming to attack us and Thomas is walking to me and I was trying to push him. I haven’t spoken to him so I don’t know exactly how it happened or if he felt something really serious.”

Partey joined the Gunners in a sensational Transfer Deadline Day deal in September, signing from Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid.

Essien played for Chelsea between 2005 and 2014, winning eight major titles, including the Champions League.

“I think we’ve all seen what he has done at Chelsea, what he has done for the Black Stars and for me, he’s my idol.

“I grew up watching Michael Essien, [Sulley] Muntari, the Ayew brothers – they are the people I look up to and they made a lot of impact on Ghanaians. I think this is my moment and I have to make sure I take it.”

The 27-year-old currently faces a spell on the sidelines after picking up a thigh injury while in Premier League action for the Gunners on Sunday, leading to his substitution at half-time.

His fitness setback has forced him out of Ghana’s double-header against Sudan in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

It is currently unclear if he will be fit in time for Arsenal’s trip to Leeds United on November 22 after the ongoing international break.

  • Atletico’s fear over Partey, Oblak

Atletico Madrid are desperate to keep their squad together this summer but Diego Simeone fears losing top stars Thomas Partey or Jan Oblak if their attractive buyout clauses are met, sources have told ESPN.

The club are in a more delicate financial situation than most amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the coach and his team taking a temporary 70% pay cut in April, and CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin said this week they’ll “make three or four changes at most” this summer.

Atletico’s real worry, though, is having to replace, or cope without, Partey – available for €50m and heavily linked with Arsenal – or Oblak, whose €120m clause hasn’t stopped Chelsea from taking an interest after losing faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Atletico have suffered in recent years after setting affordable buyout clauses which big clubs have been happy to meet. A year ago, they lost the spine of the team — Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona for €120m, Rodri to Manchester City for €70m and Lucas Hernandez to Bayern for €80m — in one transfer window.

Their stance this summer is that no key player will be sold for less than his release clause, although that would be tested by a serious cash offer or a reasonable player exchange.

  • Partey’s Atletico Madrid knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Leipzig

Thomas Partey will no longer play a part in the UEFA Champions League after his Spanish side Atletico Madrid suffered a shock defeat at the hands of RB Leipzig on Thursday night.

The Ghana midfielder’s club were stunned when they were defeated 2-1 by the German side in the quarter-final match played in the Portuguese capital because of the coronavirus disease.

Partey was left to watch the match from the bench as he is just recovering from injury and the Germans took full advantage to reach their first Champions League semi-final just 11 years after their formation.

RB Leipzig overcame the typically cautious Atletico Madrid who were most restricted in the midfield because of the absence of their Ghanaian talisman – denying them of their spark.

After a poor first half, Dani Olmo headed the German side ahead but Atleti substitute Joao Felix levelled the tie from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the box.

Madrid, chasing a third final in the last six years, seemed content to take the one-legged tie in Lisbon to extra time and sat back for much of the game.

They were punished for their characteristically defensive approach as Tyler Adams’ deflected strike two minutes from time sent Julian Nagelsmann’s exciting side through to face Paris St-Germain in the semi-finals.

  • Thomas Partey is the right man for Arsenal – Kenyan international Okoth

Kenya and Sofapaka striker Ronald Okoth believes Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey is the right player for Arsenal this summer.

The 27-year-old enjoyed his best season in La Liga with Atlético Madrid making 35 appearances and scoring three goals.

The Gunners are still looking for a talismanic figure to fill their engine room and have been heavily linked to the Black Stars talisman who reportedly has a release clause of €50million (£43.5m).

According to Okoth, Partey’s signing will prove a worthy deal for the London side.

“I surely think he [Thomas] Partey is the right man for Arsenal because if you analyse the club now, it really requires an engine like Partey,” Okoth told Goal.

“If at all they [Arsenal and Partey] would come to an agreement, it is going to be the best signing made by Arsenal. Looking at the kind of defensive woes and all that, I think Partey is a man to bring some kind of stability across the board.

“He can help cushion the back four and join the attacks when there is a need to but his greatest strength, as I know, is creating the best link between the defence and the forward line.

“Partey will provide the much-needed cover that Arsenal have been lacking for quite some time.

“It will be the best signing in my view.”

He added, “[Matteo] Guendouzi is young and a hard-working lad, and when he plays one finds it hard to believe he is still very young.”

“If he continues putting the same work rate week in week out in a season, then I have no doubt that he has a bright future.

“He is definitely going to be among the best mid

“I will not call it a challenge [Guendouzi vs Partey possible rivalry] as such, but I would prefer to say that it would be a healthy competition. It will bring the needed fighting spirit among the players and end laxity.

“Whenever you get another quality player joining, that is always a plus because he will push you beyond your limit.

“In that process, one gets to unleash his own best side. It is the same thing we are seeing Chelsea doing; signing strikers when the likes of Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham are still there.”
