Prominent member of theNew Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe,has voiced his surprise and disappointment at the comments made by esteemed lawyer Sam Okudzeto concerning the corruption allegations against Cecilia Dapaah, the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.
He criticized Okudzeto’s remarks, which seemed to defend the former minister, stating that such comments are inappropriate given his stature and should be condemned.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stressed the crucial need for holding government officials accountable, especially in corruption cases, to maintain transparency and integrity within the system.
“I was surprised that my senior brother Sam Okudzeto came out with a statement concerning the Cecilia Dapaah case. I was really surprised. I know that I’m not annoyed. But I was surprised because if anybody even has a glass, the person should be able to account for it.
“And we have buildings springing up all over their places. Do you want to tell me that they just got there? People put them there. Where did they get their money from? And these are the things that annoy the ordinary people,” he said while speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey.
It is important to note that Sam Okudzeto previously asserted that storing money at home is not illegal, as there are no laws against it.
His defense of Cecilia Dapaah, who is currently under investigation for corruption, has sparked considerable criticism.
I am disappointed at my senior brother Sam Okudzeto's comments on Cecilia Dapaah's case – Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe
Cecilia Dapaah is under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for corruption and related offenses after two of her house helps were arrested for allegedly stealing over $1 million, €300,000, and other valuables from her Abelemkpe residence.
An Accra High Court initially ordered the release of Dapaah’s frozen accounts and the return of her confiscated funds. However, on September 5, 2023, the OSP re-froze her accounts.
On August 9, 2023, it was reported that the OSP had frozen the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources’ assets and bank accounts, which contained substantial amounts in both dollars and cedis.
Ghana is poised to obtain board approval from theInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) for the third installment of $360 million from its extended credit facility worth $3 billion.
The government’s ongoing assistance program, designed to stabilize the economy and promote sustainable growth, is reportedly yielding results surpassing initial expectations.
To date, Ghana has received $1.2 billion in IMF funding, earmarked for fiscal consolidation, bolstering foreign exchange reserves, and facilitating overall economic recovery.
According to the IMF, Ghana is approaching the approval phase for the subsequent disbursement, having consistently met the requisite economic and policy benchmarks.
Julie Kozack, IMF’s Director of Communications, expressed confidence in Ghana’s progress and emphasized the IMF’s support during a recent press briefing in Washington, D.C.
“On April 13th, IMF staff and the Ghanaian authorities reached a staff-level agreement for the second review of the programme. The aim is to bring the review to the IMF’s Executive Board before the end of June, and once approved by the Board, the review would give Ghana access to about $360 million.
The authorities’ strong policy and reform efforts under the programme are bearing fruit, and signs of economic stabilization are emerging.”
Ghana is expected to get approval for its third tranche of $360m when the Executive Board of the IMF meet in June, having reached a staff-level agreement on the second review of the loan-support programme.
The Fund has stated that the fund will not require the Ghanaian government to implement additional adjustments.
The government has expressed optimism that ongoing discussions among official creditors will facilitate the conclusion of talks, enabling the release of the third tranche of funds.
“Growth, for example, in 2023, was higher than anticipated, and the growth projections are being revised upward.
Inflation has been declining rapidly, the fiscal and external positions have improved, and exchange rate volatility has declined quite significantly. The authorities are making good progress on their comprehensive debt restructuring.
The domestic debt exchange was completed last year, and on January 12th, the government reached agreement in principle with its official bilateral creditors.
Ghana is also engaging with external private creditors to seek their support”, Julie Kozack added.
Soon after the 2016 election, a UK-based friend I had come to know through Facebook, Kwame Kyei-Baffuor, called me. saying he wanted to recommend me as Press Secretary to Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Manhyia South MP (a.k.a ‘Napo’ ), upon his imminent appointment as Minister for Education.
I was intrigued yet highly flattered by his kind suggestion and allowed my name to be put forward.
I had never met Dr Prempeh in person even though he was and still is my MP. Kwame made the necessary arrangements to put us in touch and eventually, on March 1, 2017, I started work at the ministry, with the primary responsibilities of working on his speeches and providing communication support.
Relocating from Kumasi was like having a tooth pulled out without the benefit of anaesthetic, but that is a story for another day. With Dr Prempeh’s 56th birthday due to fall this Thursday, I cannot help but reflect on my public role over the past seven years, and on the man who has been central to this invaluable public service experience.
Public service
Early into our working relationship, we had to establish an important demarcation. I had noted that Dr Prempeh, a surgeon by training and therefore a clinically precise person, preferred his speeches to reflect just that. I, on the other hand, a disciple of the liberal arts, had a more ‘Shakespearean’ disposition on writing, complete with ornamental, sometimes flowery language. Of course, I, rather than he, had to make the adjustment.
With the government’s decision to implement its flagship Free SHS programme at the start of the 2017/18 academic year, which was only six months away, I found myself thrown into the deep end almost as soon as I started work, as the ministry scrambled under Napo’s leadership to deliver.
It was an almost frantic situation. I would get to the ministry at 7 am to find his car already parked and several senior officials busy at work. I observed a man who would patiently listen to submissions during meetings, ask piercing questions and argue his point with aplomb, as if he had been in education all his working life ― a trait he has carried into the energy space as minister.
Officials got to know better than to turn up at meetings unprepared, and for me those early months were a huge learning curve. I quickly discovered that communicating particularly on social media while working in government required a completely different skills set from when in opposition.
Almost by default, there is a general mistrust of literally everything that any government says or does, which puts one on the ropes before even attempting to communicate policy or explain certain official decisions.
Relationships with media and party grass roots, in particular, constitute a tightrope to be carefully navigated if one is to avoid being tagged with ‘arrogance in power’.
Perceptions
Ahead of taking up the job, a few friends had warned me that I would struggle to work with the minister, insisting I would leave the job in a few months. But I have long learnt in life to see things for myself and not to rely on others’ perceptions.
What I have found out for myself over the past seven years is that Dr. Prempeh is a strong-willed, highly focused and determined character, a man who does not countenance negativity when pursuing goals.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this alpha-male personality has been perceived as disrespect and even bellicosity, bordering on arrogance. It appears some prefer to take assertiveness for arrogance and docility for humility. But beneath it all lies an underbelly of jovial, light moments with a passion for a good debate, for Kumasi Asante Kotoko and for Kofi Kinaata’s music, to which he can dance to no end.
If we have crossed swords in the past seven years, it has mainly been over our respective schools. He is intensely proud of his alma mater, Prempeh College, as I am of mine, Opoku Ware School, and the ancient rivalry between our two schools sometimes spills unto the conference room table in light moments during meetings.
“My blood is green,” he would say, in reference to his school’s primary colour. “Mine is blue, Honourable,” I would retort, from the school colour perspective.
Political future Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Dr Prempeh is a big player in Ghanaian politics, with a passion for public service and a zeal to always succeed in any task he is given. Quite unusually for a medical student, he became the local NUGS President at KNUST back in the day, perhaps heralding things to come.
With his many years in frontline politics as a Member of Parliament and a minister, together with several accomplishments to his name, I ardently believe that Dr Prempeh has a bright future in the politics of Ghana. Of course, ultimately, God is the lifter of men.
Come Thursday, on Napo’s 56th birthday, I, like many others, will certainly be raising a glass of vintage Dom Perignon champagne to his health and longevity. Cheers!

England manager Gareth Southgate has explained his decision to leave Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson out of his Euro 2024 squad.
Southgate announced his provisional 33-man squad for the tournament, but Rashford and Henderson, both regulars under his management, were notably absent.
Instead, Southgate surprised many by including five uncapped players: Jarrad Branthwaite, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Adam Wharton, and James Trafford.
Luke Shaw is also in the squad but is considered a “long shot” due to his ongoing recovery from an injury sustained in February.
Rashford’s exclusion comes after a difficult season with Manchester United, where he managed only seven goals and two assists, contributing to the team’s eighth-place finish. Henderson’s journey has been tumultuous; after leaving Liverpool for Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia last summer, he struggled to adapt and subsequently moved to Ajax in January.
Although he made nine appearances in the Eredivisie, injuries have hampered his season, ultimately leading to his omission from the squad.
Southgate addressed the media, explaining his rationale for leaving Rashford out during a press conference.
He told reporters: “These are of course difficult calls. You are talking about players that are very important players. With Marcus, in that area of the pitch, I feel that other players have had better seasons, it’s as simple as that.”
The England boss went on to speak about Henderson’s omission: “Hendo has given himself every chance. From the last camp, he missed five weeks through injury and he hasn’t been able to get to that tempo since then. It’s a big call to make, the three players from last time, he, Ben (White) and Marcus (Rashford) all had excellent professionalism.”
Southgate also offered an update on Shaw’s chances of making the squad. He told reporters: “[Luke Shaw’s] up against it.
He’s missed a lot of football. The fact that he has been our first choice in that position, we’ve probably given him a lot longer than we would have done.
I’ve talked with him and the medical team, we’ve been liaising with Manchester United, I’m not sure what’s realistic at this time. I have to say, he’s a long shot.”
The two-time Ballon d’Or winner has spent the past 18 months recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and undergoing keyhole surgery on her knee.
Now fully fit, Putellas has been persuaded by Barcelona’s proposal, with the club confirming her contract extension on Tuesday.
Despite receiving lucrative offers from the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Putellas has always intended to remain at Barcelona.
However, before committing to a new contract, she sought assurances about the club’s future direction and her role within the team, according to The Athletic.
In December, Barcelona offered Putellas a contract that would make her the highest-paid player in the squad, effectively doubling her salary.
However, her decision to join the Spanish national team camp in February, against the medical team’s advice, did not sit well with the club.
Despite the initial tension caused by her national team call-up, both parties managed to reach an understanding and have now resolved their differences.
Putellas has the potential to end the current season by securing a treble.
The Catalan club has already won the Liga F and Copa de la Reina trophies, with a UEFA Women’s Champions League final against Lyon still to come.
In April, Liverpool reached a compensation agreement of £9.4 million with Feyenoord after selecting the 45-year-old as Klopp’s successor at Anfield.
Klopp, who had managed Liverpool since October 2015, departed the club following their season-ending victory against Wolves on Sunday.
After the game, the 56-year-old German called on Liverpool fans to get behind their new boss, chanting, “Arne Slot, na na na na na.” Slot’s three-year contract at Liverpool will officially start on 1 June, subject to a work permit.
“It is certainly not an easy decision to close the door behind you at a club where you have experienced so many wonderful moments and worked successfully with so many wonderful people,” Slot told Feyenoord’s club website.
“But as a sportsman, an opportunity to become a head coach in the Premier League, at one of the biggest clubs in the world, is difficult to ignore.”
Following Liverpool’s announcement on Monday, Mohamed Salah appeared to suggest he would remain at Anfield next season.
“We know that trophies are what counts and we will do everything possible to make that happen next season. Our fans deserve it, and we will fight like hell,” the 31-year-old posted on X.
Last summer, the Reds turned down a £150 million bid from Al-Ittihad for Salah, but Michael Emenalo, the Saudi Pro League’s director of football, indicated that the option to acquire the Egyptian winger remained open.
Jurgen Klopp concluded his time at Liverpool by securing every major trophy available, despite falling short in several key finals. His tenure at the Merseyside club was distinguished by historic accomplishments, including winning the Premier League, the Champions League, and various domestic cups.
As Arne Slot steps in to lead the team, both fans and players are optimistic that this new era will bring ongoing success and more silverware to Anfield.
Lionel Messi has been enjoying some leisure time at a nightclub with his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, during a break from Inter Miami fixtures.
The Argentine superstar returned to the Bresh venue in Florida, making the most of his downtime between MLS matches.
The 36-year-old has been in top form this season, recently playing a key role in Miami’s thrilling 1-0 victory over D.C. United. Off the field, Messi is ensuring he takes full advantage of his relaxation time.
Messi and his significant other, accompanied by a group of close friends, seized the chance to attend a live concert by Maria Becerra, a renowned Argentine singer and former YouTube sensation.
Amidst the intimate setting, Becerra ventured through the audience, engaging with fans.
In a buoyant mood, Messi energetically swayed to the music, fully embracing the moment despite the numerous attendees capturing his and Becerra’s performances on their mobile devices.
The atmosphere was vibrant as they mingled with fellow concert-goers, enjoying the unique experience together.
Jordan Henderson has reportedly been omitted from England’s provisional squad for Euro 2024, despite being a longtime favourite of Gareth Southgate.
The seasoned midfielder, who has accumulated 81 senior caps, is now facing the consequences of some poor decisions at the club level.
Henderson parted ways with Liverpool in July 2023, aiming to secure a spot in the European Championship by joining Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.
However, his stint in the Middle East lasted only six months before his contract was terminated, leading to a move to Dutch side Ajax.
Unfortunately, his time in the Netherlands has been marred by injuries, further hampering his form and fitness.
According to The Athletic, Southgate has decided not to include the industrious midfielder in his Euros plans.
England is set to announce a provisional squad of 30 players for the tournament in Germany this summer.
Despite having captained England on occasion in the absence of star striker Harry Kane, Henderson will be left watching from the sidelines as the team embarks on its quest for continental glory.
England will kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16, with friendly matches against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland scheduled beforehand.

David Beckham jokingly admitted that he might face some backlash from his Manchester United friends after openly praising departing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Despite his significant role in Manchester United’s successful years under Sir Alex Ferguson, Beckham surprisingly expressed his admiration for Klopp, citing both his personality and his impact on the sport.
Considering the intense rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool, Beckham’s generous words towards a former rival manager stand out as a rare occurrence.
Speaking on the Smartless podcast, Beckham stated: “Even as a Man United fan, I love Jurgen. I love his character, his personality, and what he brings to the sport.”
He went on to acknowledge the potential backlash from his United peers with a touch of humour, saying: “I am going to get killed by some of my Man United friends.
I am sad to see him leave. What he has done for the club and the sport has been incredible.”
On Sunday, Klopp bid his final farewell to Liverpool as Feyenoord’s Arne Slot was announced as his successor. Now a free agent, the German manager’s future is uncertain.
When asked if he would consider bringing Klopp to Inter Miami, Beckham responded.
The former England captain dismissed the idea with a hilarious response: “We’ve not got much money left.”
As Klopp steps away from Liverpool, he plans to take a well-deserved break. According to the Daily Mail, he is set to begin his hiatus at a luxury hotel in Majorca – close to his under-construction mansion on the Balearic Islands.
Interestingly, Klopp will be in good company with former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgersand his ex-pupil, Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski, as his neighbours.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called upon the church, regarded as the moral compass of society, to voice concerns regarding issues surrounding the 2024 electoral process.
Expressing apprehension over various aspects of the Ejusu by-election and the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, he urged the church to address these matters.
In a discussion with the Christian Ecumenical Council on Monday, Mahama highlighted the importance of the church advocating for neutrality and ensuring a transparent and equitable election process.
He emphasized the pivotal role of the church in upholding democratic principles and fostering fairness within the electoral system.
“This is a president who is appointing politically exposed people into positions of trust where they are supposed to be neutral and non-partisan and so people who have been communicators for the party, people who have been IT backstops for the party, today are Commissioners of the Electoral Commission. How do you expect them to be neutral and fair in what is happening?
“People who were patrons of TESCON on campus are today Commissioners of the Electoral Commission. But we want to wake up the conscience of the nation that the right thing must be done so that the outcome can actually be the will of the people.
“So going up to the election, We will continue to play our part. We will raise the red flags anytime we think things are not going very well. And we believe that the church community should also keep an eye and be vigilant in terms of making sure that the right thing is done.”
Juapong District of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), situated under Tema, has issued a stern warning to the public against meddling with the power distributor’s network, citing potential risks to the company, customers, and the general populace.
The caution comes following the district’s identification of a fuse burnout in a 200KVA transformer located in Asikuma, a town within its jurisdiction. This fuse, designed to safeguard the transformer, was discovered to be damaged on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
The company’s attention was drawn to this issue after observing frequent tampering with the distribution network, particularly by individuals, possibly non-company electricians, during outages in attempts to restore power.
However, such actions pose significant hazards, as these individuals may lack familiarity with the specific network design of the area.
Ing. Rejoice Garfo, the Juapong District Engineer, reiterated this warning on a stakeholder WhatsApp platform for residents of the district.
She urged that “if such interference continues, the entire transformer could be damaged. This would result in customers being without power until a new transformer is installed.”
The Juapong District Manager, Ing. William Ahenkorah, mentioned that “replacing these transformers consumes significant company resources, diverting funds from other projects and straining the company’s finances.”
Ing. Ahenkorah also stressed that before any work is done on the distribution network, the team ensures that power is switched off when necessary.
He explained, “This is crucial to prevent accidents, injuries, and potential fatalities. Just imagine if an unauthorized individual attempts to work on the network during an outage and the power is suddenly restored. This could result in loss of life.”
Engineer Ahenkorah advises customers and the general public to report any power supply issues, outages, or related problems directly to the ECG for resolution, rather than attempting to resolve them independently.

Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP)has published a report stemming from a joint investigation with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) regarding the Government’s Payroll Administration.
This release comes amidst a recent petition for the impeachment of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
According to the OSP, the investigation yielded the identification and removal of undeserving individuals from the government’s payroll, leading to the blocking of salaries.
This action resulted in significant savings for the country, amounting to over GH¢34.2 million for the 2024 financial year alone.
The report, which is part of Phase 1 of the collaborative investigation, specifically targeted unwarranted salaries within the Ghana Education Service and Ghana Health Service in the Northern Region.
“Out of the sampled high-risk number of 1,265 individuals on the payroll, the joint investigation and assessment cleared 1,020 individuals as regularly validated.
The Special Prosecutor promptly unfroze the blocked salaries of the verified individuals upon timely clearance by the joint team, and they have been restored to the payroll system.
“A total amount of Two Million Eight Hundred and Fifty-Four Thousand One Hundred and Forty-Four cedis Eighty pesewas (GH¢2,854,144.80) was identified as unearned monthly salaries being paid to deceased, retired, vacated, missing, or unknown individuals (referred to as ‘Ghost Names’) from their respective effective dates to January 2024, when it was blocked by the Special Prosecutor,” excerpts from the report read.
It further stated, “The blocking of the amount of Two Million Eight Hundred and Fifty-Four Thousand One Hundred and Forty-Four cedis Eighty pesewas (GH¢2,854,144.80) and the removal from the Government Payroll of the corresponding deceased, retired, post vacators, the missing, and those whose whereabouts are unknown has saved the Republic an amount of Thirty-Four Million Two Hundred and Forty-Nine Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty-Seven cedis Six pesewas (GH¢34,249,737.6) for the 2024 financial year, with potential future savings for every year the unearned salaries would have gone undetected.”
The report further states that theOSP and CAGD are actively pursuing legal action against individuals responsible for fraudulent activities, including promoting individuals to non-existent schools and validating payments to deceased, untraceable, retired, and vacant positions.
Efforts are underway to recover unearned salaries that were erroneously disbursed to individuals who are deceased, untraceable, retired, or no longer in their positions.

United States says it will pull all its troops out of Niger within the next four months or so after the West African country’s military government ordered them to leave.
Niger last month told Washington to withdraw its military personnel, which number close to 1,000, branding their presence “illegal”.
The military government, which took power last year, has already overseen the withdrawal of troops from former colonial power and traditional security ally France as it has strengthened ties with Russia.
The US withdrawal from Niger has commenced, as confirmed by a joint statement from the Pentagon and Nigerien defense officials on Sunday.
All troops are scheduled to leave the country by September 15, “at the latest.”
Niger had been a crucial ally of the West until a coup occurred last year, actively participating in Washington’s efforts against armed groups in the Sahel region.
Following a five-day meeting, a new agreement was reached between Niger’s defense ministry and the US Department of Defense.
This agreement ensures the protection of US troops until their departure, as stated in the joint statement.
“The withdrawal of American forces from Niger in no way affects the pursuit of relations between the United States and Niger in the area of development.
Also, Niger and the United States are committed to an ongoing diplomatic dialogue to define the future of their bilateral relations,” the statement added.
According to senior military officials speaking to Reuters and The Associated Press news agencies, US troops and certain equipment have already commenced their departure from the country.
The intention is to evacuate all lethal, hazardous, or classified equipment before the final departure of US troops.
However, officials noted that items deemed too costly to transport could potentially be left for use by the Nigerien military instead.
AcknowledgingNiger’s significant role as a cornerstone in US counterterrorism efforts over the past decade, officials admitted to ongoing considerations regarding how to address the resulting gap.
Jose Mourinho may make a coaching comeback next season, with reports suggesting that Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al-Ittihad is interested in securing his services.
The Portuguese coaching legend could potentially reunite with Karim Benzema in Saudi Arabia, as Al-Ittihad reportedly eyes Mourinho as their next manager.
Mourinho, who has previously managed top clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Chelsea, has been without a club since his departure from AS Roma in January.
According to journalist Bruno Andrade, Al-Ittihad has also considered former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri for the managerial position.
Allegri recently led Juventus to Coppa Italia victory before parting ways with the Serie A club.
In addition to interest from Saudi Arabia, Mourinho is also linked with a potential move to the Turkish Super Lig, with both Fenerbahce and Besiktas expressing interest in securing his services.
With several top European clubs potentially seeking new managers, includingBayern Munich, Barcelona, ManchesterUnited, and Chelsea, it remains uncertain where Mourinho will land for the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.
OpenAI has announced plans to remove one of the voices used by ChatGPT afterusers likened it to Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson.
The similarity was noticed in the chatbot’s “Sky” voice option, which reads responses aloud to users, during the presentation of features for its new model.
The conversational upgrade to its AI chatbot drew comparisons to the 2013 film Her, starring the actress.
OpenAI stated that the voices offered in ChatGPT’s voice mode were meticulously chosen through a comprehensive process lasting five months.
This process involved collaboration with professional voice actors, talent agencies, casting directors, and industry advisors.
The film Her, set in the near-future, features Joaquin Phoenix falling in love with his phone’s operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.
Director Spike Jonze emphasized that the film is not solely about technology or software, but rather about the quest for love and intimacy.
Addressing the comparisons, OpenAI clarified on Monday that the voice is not meant to be an “imitation” of the star.
“We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity’s distinctive voice,” it said in a blog post.
it is “working to pause” the voice while it addresses questions about how it was chosen in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
What is AI, how does it work and what can it be used for?
Despite this, when OpenAI showed off its new model GPT-4o on 13 May, boss Sam Altman referenced the name of the film on X.
During the demonstration of its more human-like conversational abilities, the chatbot told an OpenAI staff member: “Wow, that’s quite the outfit you’ve got on”.
It also said “stop it, you’re making me blush” when complimented.
But amid memes and posts about ChatGPT – featuring gifs of the film’s lonely protagonist Theodore Twombly – were also critical takes on the voice.
“This is giving such “female character as written by men” vibes,” said one person on X.
“Why is she so obsequious and flirty?”
OpenAI’s blog post detailed that the five voices integrated into its chatbot were sourced from collaborative efforts with voice actors.
The desired traits of being multilingual and possessing an “approachable” or “charismatic” tone, evoking a timeless quality, were focal points in crafting these personalities.
Before finalizing the voices, OpenAI individually engaged with selected actors, discussing the company’s vision for human-AI interactions and the technology’s capabilities, limitations, and risks.
While the advanced voice features showcased at the spring update event have not yet been implemented for ChatGPT users, OpenAI plans to offer them to subscribers seeking faster responses and priority access to new features in the forthcoming weeks.
Taiwan’s newly inaugurated presidentWilliam Lai has called on China to stop threatening the island and accept the existence of its democracy.
He urged Beijing to replace confrontation with dialogue, shortly after being sworn in on Monday. He also said Taiwan would never back down in the face of intimidation from China, which has long claimed the island as its own.
China responded by saying, “Taiwan independence is a dead end”.
“Regardless of the pretext or the banner under which it is pursued, the push for Taiwan independence is destined to fail,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at the daily press briefing on Monday afternoon.
Beijing holds a strong dislike for William Lai and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), viewing them as pro-independence.
Since Lai’s election win in January, China has intensified military incursions around Taiwan’s waters and airspace, raising fears of conflict.
In his inauguration speech, Lai described these actions as the “greatest strategic challenge to global peace and stability.”
Despite his firm stance, the 64-year-old Lai adhered closely to the approach of his predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, known for her cautious but steady handling of relations with Beijing.
Lai, a former doctor turned politician, won a three-way presidential race in January, securing an unprecedented third term for the DPP.
He served as Tsai’s vice-president since 2020 and as her premier before that.
In his earlier political career, Lai was known for his more radical pro-independence stance, earning Beijing’s ire and the label of “troublemaker.”
Chinese state media even suggested he should be prosecuted for secession ahead of the polls.
The Chinese government has yet to issue a statement on Lai’s inauguration.
However, the Chinese embassy in the UK held a press briefing over the weekend, urging the UK government not to endorse the event.
Earlier last week, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office warned that Taiwan’s new leader “must seriously” consider whether he seeks peaceful development or confrontation.
And just as Mr Lai was being sworn in, China’s Commerce Ministry announced sanctions against several US companies “involved in arms sales to Taiwan”.
But on Monday, Mr Lai struck a far more conciliatory note. He reiterated he would not do anything to change the status quo – an ambiguous diplomatic status, which doesn’t recognise Taiwan as a country despite its constitution and sovereign government. China insists on this and accuses major Taiwan allies such as the US of altering this delicate agreement by supporting the island.
Vowing peace and stability, Mr Lai also said he would like to see a re-opening of exchanges across the Taiwan straits including Chinese tourist groups coming to Taiwan. But he said people on the island must not be under any illusion about the threat from China and that Taiwan must further strengthen its defences.
This too was a continuation of Tsai’s policy. Taiwan’s former president believed that strengthening defence and earning the support of key allies such as the US and Japan was key to deterring China’s plans of invasion. Her biggest critics say this military investment risks provoking China, making Taiwan even more vulnerable.
Nevertheless, yearly defence spending increased up to about $20bn (£16bn) under Ms Tsai, and Mr Lai has pledged even more funds. Taiwan has purchased new battle tanks, upgraded its fleet of F-16 fighter jets and bought new ones, and has built and launched a fleet of new missile ships to patrol the 100-mile Taiwan strait.
Last September came the completion of what Ms Tsai considers the crowning achievement of her military program: Taiwan’s first indigenously developed submarine.
President William Lai (C), First Lady Wu Mei-ju (L) and Vice-President Hsiao Bi-khim (R) dance after the inauguration Taiwan’s own allies are watching closely too, to see if his rhetoric is likely to aggravate tensions further. Mr Lai’s caution was also aimed at his American audience.
His vice-president Hsiao Bi-Khim, widely believed to be Ms Tsai’s protege, is yet another source of assurance for Washington. The 52-year-old was born in Japan and mostly grew up in the US, where she also served as Taiwan’s representative for three years.
Mr Lai also faces big challenges at home. Unemployment and cost of living cost the DPP the youth vote in January, and Taiwan’s economy is seen to be heavily dependent on its hugely successful semiconductor industry – it supplies more than half the world’s chips.
And a divided parliament, where the DPP no longer has a majority, is likely to deny him a honeymoon period. The differences spilled into the spotlight over the weekend when lawmakers were caught brawling in parliament over proposed reforms. The bitter dispute and the protests that followed marred Mr Lai’s address.
But how he deals with Beijing will be the biggest question that will determine his presidency, especially as both sides have had no formal communication since 2016.
Lawyer Hsu Chih-ming who attended the inaugurations told BBC Chinese that Taiwan had fared quite well under Ms Tsai but added that there is a need to maintain “good communications” with China.
“Lai said he was a ‘practical worker for Taiwan independence’.I hope he wouldn’t emphasise this too much and worsen cross-strait relations,” he said. “Otherwise all of us wouldn’t be able to escape if a war broke out.”
When a second City player joins in an attempt to dispossess him, Kudus eludes both before taking on a third City player after crossing the center line. He then turns back and releases the ball to a teammate.
The win confirmed Manchester City as the champions of the 2023-2024 Premier League season, securing their fourth straight title.
Meanwhile, Kudus’ goal was his eighth in the Premier League, bringing his total goal involvement to 14, including six assists.
The 23-year-old finished the season as the joint highest-scoring Ghanaian in the Premier League, tied with Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo.
Kudus ended the season on a high note, scoring 17 goals and providing seven assists in 47 games across all competitions.
Nigerian billionaire and chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has announced that Nigeria will no longer need to import gasoline by June 2024, thanks to the Dangote Refinery.
Dangote revealed that his refinery, which is already producing diesel and aviation fuel, will be capable of meeting the gasoline needs of West Africa and the aviation fuel demands of the entire continent.
He made this declaration at the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday, May 17, 2024, while discussing the progress of the refinery.
“Right now, Nigeria has no cause to import anything apart from gasoline and by sometime in June, within the next four or five weeks, Nigeria shouldn’t import anything like gasoline; not one drop of a litre,” he is quoted to have said.
He added that his company “can supply gasoline to West Africa, diesel to West and Central Africa, and aviation fuel to the entire continent.”
He also pointed out that the work of his company would make Africa self-sufficient in the production of by-products of oil, including fertilizer and raw materials for detergents.
The business mogul stated that his decision to invest all his resources in Africa is to end fuel imports and create jobs on the continent, and the Dangote Refinery was an important part of the transformation process.
“We just commissioned in February and now we are producing jet fuel, we are producing diesel, and by next month, we will be producing gasoline.
What that would do is that we would be taking most of the African crude that is being produced and also be able to supply not only Nigeria, because our capacity is too big for Nigeria, but it would also supply West Africa, Central Africa, and also South Africa.
“We have 650,000 barrels per day, 1 million tonnes of polypropylene, we have 590,000 tonnes of carbon black, which is the raw material for ink, dyes, and so on. We are expanding more. This is the first phase, and we are going on to the next phase, which will start early next year.”
Mauricio Pochettinohas explained why he did not participate in Chelsea’s lap of honour at the end of the 2023-24 Premier League season.
The Argentine has faced questions about his future at Stamford Bridge, as significant spending in west London only resulted in a sixth-place finish.
This position secures European qualification for Chelsea, though the outcome of the FA Cup final will determine if they compete in the Europa League or Conference League in 2024-25.
Despite being under contract, there is speculation about potential changes.
These rumours intensified when Pochettino and his coaching team headed down the tunnel while the Chelsea players thanked fans for their support.
Quizzed on why he skipped the customary end of season procession around the pitch, Pochettino said: “Because there was no time, because Thiago Silva [had a goodbye presentation]. And then when the players started [to do the lap], [press officer] Adrian [Phillips] said I needed to go inside. Maybe now I’ll go and give a tour [of the pitch].”
Pressed further on his future, Pochettino added: “I don’t know if that is going to happen or not. I have no idea about that. I can only tell you that on Friday night Todd [Boehly] invited me for a dinner and I think it was a very nice dinner together.
But I don’t know about the rumours, about the review or this. Tomorrow my staff are going to fly, unless they decide tonight to stay, they are going to go for holidays. And I’m going to stay a few days more in London. My door is always open and my phone is going to be on.”
Pochettino stated that any involvement in transfer business this summer is a “club decision.” With Chelsea now preparing for next season, the prospects look promising with players like Cole Palmer,Moises Caicedo, and Christopher Nkunku indicating a bright future ahead.

Other senior government officials, including the foreign minister, were on board the ill-fated helicopter.
In the wake of the tragic crash that claimed the life of President Ebrahim Raisi, Vice President Mohammed Mukhbar is set to be sworn in as the new president.
His appointment is pending the approval of the Supreme Leader. According to the constitution, a new president must be elected within 50 days following such an event.

The couple has been soaking up the sun on boat trips and mingling with fans during their time on dry land.
Although Juventus has opted not to terminate Pogba’s contract, which runs until 2026, it remains to be seen when or if he will be cleared to return to the field.
Pep Guardiola fought back tears while paying tribute to outgoing Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after the German called him the world’s best manager.
On Friday, Klopp said the former Barcelona boss was the “best manager in the world” and added if you put any other manager in the City dugout “they don’t win the league four times in a row”.
After City secured their fourth-straight Premier League crown following a 3-1 win over West Ham, Guardiola heaped praise on the German – who is leaving for pastures new this summer.
After the match, Guardiola said: “I will miss him a lot. Jurgen has been a really important part of my life. He brought me to another level as a manager. We respect each other incredibly. I have the feeling he will be back and thank you so much for his words but he knows that behind me there is a lot that this club provides me with, otherwise alone I can’t do it. I’m humble enough to understand that.
Pep Guardiola was brought to tears when responding to Jurgen Klopp's praise as the @ManCity boss claimed his fourth Premier League title in a row ❤️🤝
“I wish him all the best and hope his final game was special, he deserved it. He made Liverpool recognised with his stamp, and the incredible pride of being a Liverpool fan.
It’s not just about titles, there are personalities that when they arrive in one place they stay forever andJurgen and Liverpool will be part of the level of [Bill] Shankly and [Bob] Paisley and these incredible legends.”
Klopp won the Premier League, Champions League, and a host of domestic cups during his nine-year spell at Anfield, and Guardiola has won a whopping 17 trophies during his time at City. Both will, arguably, be remembered among the greatest managers of all time.
While it is not yet known what is in store for Klopp after finishing his time at Liverpool, Guardiola will prepare his City side for one last push as they take on bitter rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final next Saturday.
In Ghana, where many couples face challenges with fertility, some are exploring IVF and other options to fulfill their desire for children and as a result a youngman has dedicated his life to provide sperm for mothers who need children.
While infertility is often attributed to women in African society, medical experts stress that men can also play a role due to factors like low sperm count.
As a result, couples are turning to sperm banks to acquire viable sperm for IVF procedures.
This trend has created opportunities for young men like Nana Kofi Amoako, who has donated his sperm around 15 times.
Amoako expressed empathy for women struggling to conceive, motivating his decision to become a sperm donor and contribute to helping couples start families.
“What gives women joy in marriage is childbirth so I have made it a point to donate to anyone who needs a child.”
He said many young men, after having sex, throw away the sperm but he found that unacceptable as there are many women out there who need children.
“Instead of just throwing it away, we’ll give it to someone who needs a child.”
He shared how they go about it: “We have the kind of food we eat to increase our sperm count. Also, before you donate, you need to abstain from sex for about 4 days in order to get enough sperm when you donate.”
Nana Kofi, who credits his diet of gari and coconut for enhancing his sperm production, disclosed that he earns between GH¢ 2,000 to GH¢3,000 per donation.
In addition to donating sperm at a sperm bank, Nana Kofi also offers home insemination services. He elaborated that some women opt for this method to avoid the challenges of artificial insemination.
These women contract him to engage in sexual intercourse with them to facilitate pregnancy.
“We both carry out some tests first to confirm that none of us have any sexually transmitted disease then we meet at a neutral ground for the deal and after that, we go our separate ways.”
Asked how they go about the sex, Nana Kofi said “Some women enjoy the sex and even come for another session.”
He disclosed that out of the three instances of home insemination he has conducted, he only encountered the husband of one of his clients.
More than eight months after the Volta River Authority (VRA) released excess water from the Akosombo Dam, causing severe flooding in Degorme, Mepe, Volta Region, over 200 flood victims are still grappling with displacement, residing in temporary tents.
These affected residents feel neglected and abandoned, lamenting the lack of substantial government assistance to aid in their recovery.
The VRA initiated the release of excess water from the Akosombo Dam in September 2023 due to rising inflows and high water levels, a necessary measure to avert potential dam failure.
However, this action had severe repercussions for surrounding communities, displacing approximately 39,000 individuals and causing extensive property damage.
The flooding brought normal life to a halt, resulting in school closures, disrupting education for many students, and halting farming and trading activities, which are vital for local economies.
Presently, residents of Degorme Camp II endure harsh living conditions, unable to return to their homes due to destruction. Forced to dwell in makeshift tents, they face ongoing challenges in the camp, highlighting the urgent need for sustained support and assistance.
The affected residents of Mepe urgently need government intervention. The continuation of their current conditions poses severe risks to their health and well-being. Immediate support in the form of food, water, medical care, and proper housing is critical.
The VRA asserts that the controlled spillage was necessary to maintain the structural integrity of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. Engineers emphasize that managing water levels is crucial to prevent dam failure, which would have catastrophic consequences.
With the rainy season approaching, the urgency of the situation in Degorme Camp II cannot be overstated.
The government and relevant authorities must act swiftly to provide the necessary relief and support to the flood victims, enabling them to rebuild their lives after this devastating event.
For the affected residents, immediate and sustained assistance is not just a need but a lifeline. Their future depends on it.
Sophia Abbah, a leader at Degorme Camp II, expressed the residents’ frustration and desperation. “We feel completely abandoned. Without food, water, or medical care, our situation is getting worse by the day,” she said.

An explosion at a premix fuel depot in Ngyirasia, a fishing community in Essikadu Ketan, Western Region, resulted in severe injuries for sixteen individuals.
The incident occurred when leaked premix fuel came into contact with live fire from fishmongers in a nearby smoking facility around 4pm on Saturday, May 18.
Thirteen of the injured were transported to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi for treatment, while three were taken to the Saint Benedict Hospital in Inchaban.
Despite the prompt response and intervention of personnel from the Western Regional command of the Ghana National Fire Service, two vehicles—a Range Rover and an Opel Astra Taxi—were destroyed in the explosion.
Over the past three months, the Accra Central Market has been grappling with a shortage of enema bulb syringes, commonly referred to as “bentua,” leaving numerous vendors without stock.
This scarcity came to light during a week-long engagement between The Mirror and several traders specializing in the product.
Vendors from different regions of the country, who typically visit the market to procure “bentua” in bulk, have consistently returned home empty-handed.
According to these vendors, a licensed importer based in Kumasi, who holds a monopoly on “bentua” imports, is the root cause of the shortage.
Georgina, a vendor at UTC in Accra, revealed that this wholesaler supplies the majority of the stock in Kumasi and several West African countries, including Cote d’Ivoire.
“So by the time she supplies Accra, ‘na aka ketewa bi (it’s left with a small quantity).”
The monopoly on “bentua” imports has placed numerous vendors and their customers in a precarious situation. “We’ve been inundated with complaints and demands from potential customers,” expressed one vendor to The Mirror.
These customers are keen on acquiring the “bentua” for distribution to different locations. At the Accra Central Market, some vendors were seen leaving their merchandise behind, aiming to promptly secure the “bentua” from their suppliers.
Amid this chaos, confusion arose when some vendors mistook this reporter for an importer who had come to improve their supply woes.
A vendor at Kingsway, Maame Bee, expressed her frustration, stating, “If the woman in Kumasi does not supply the Accra Central market, nobody else seems to have the right to import into the country.
She imports them from China.” Another vendor who sold in front of the Universal Merchant Bank at the Okaishie market Naa Tsotsòo, shared similar concerns.
“Unfortunately, we cannot produce “bentua” in Ghana,” she lamented. “China, Germany, and Holland all produce “bentua”. There’s also an Indian company in Abidjan making them. Our great, great, grandmothers have been using this; Why can’t we produce some here?” she asked.
The shortage has severely impacted vendors such as Offeibea, who has been in the “bentua” business for 16 years and depends heavily on its sales for her livelihood.
“Because of the shortage, I am unable to sell wholesale. What I have now is just for retailing and it affects business; I can’t make much profit,” she stated from her position beneath a staircase in the cosmetics section of the market.
Despite these challenges, the “bentua” remains a highly patronised and profitable item, with prices ranging from GH₵25 to GH₵70 depending on the size. The “bentua” is a bulb syringe used in administering liquid through the anus for various health and ritual purposes.
Medical
Dr. Philemon Kumassah, a general surgery practitioner atKorle Bu Teaching Hospital, shed light on the issue in an interview with The Mirror.
He clarified that the problem stemmed from the intended usage of the enema bulb syringes. Dr. Kumassah cautioned against administering certain herbs through the syringe, as it could adversely affect the colon and is generally not recommended.
He emphasized that such usage is warranted only in rare medical cases.
Even then, he stressed the importance of using a special enema that is gentle on the colon when clearing the rectum.
“There is no health benefit for using an enema syringe and if there are no medical benefits, why are you using it?” he asked. A midwife at the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra, Ms Doreen Osei, also debunked the rumour that the syringe was a requirement at the labour ward.
“What we use is called penguin sucker. It is used to suction a baby’s nostrils and mouth after delivery to clear the airway for respiration”, she explained.
Users
Several individuals, including young people, shared with The Mirror that they utilized the syringe for various purposes. These ranged from alleviating constipation and diarrhea to administering medication to enhance sexual performance and even for disciplining children.
Daavi, a market vendor, disclosed that she was introduced to the practice by fellow market women. Growing up in a Ga household, she had not been familiar with its use initially, but upon their recommendation, she began utilizing it.
“I use my bentua after every three months as soon as l deworm. I get some herbs and flush out my system. I feel very good”, she said. Ella Mensah, 28, said, “bentua de3 3y3 birth control (the syringe is a birth control device), all you need is to grind some pawpaw leaves and administer it early in the morning after a sexual encounter instead of taking morning after pills”.
Tube
During discussions about the handling of the bentua, some market women suggested that its tube could be substituted with a ballpoint pen container.
This alternative sparked debate among them. While one woman argued that the original tube was superior, hygienic, and posed no risks, another, Maame Etruba, clarified that the improvised container was sufficient for delivering two shots at once due to its larger opening and capacity to absorb more liquid.
“Besides the tip of the pen container is not smooth enough and likely to cause a tear at the anus” she added. They, however, concluded that buyers of the syringe who found the tip of the tube rough could trim it to make it smooth for penetration.
The recent surge in the cost of dialysis treatment, rising from GH¢380 to GH¢491 per session, has plunged thousands of renal patients nationwide into despair.
Renal patients heavily rely on dialysis sessions, typically three times a week, to eliminate waste by-products and excess fluid from their blood, given their compromised kidney function.
However, with the economic downturn exacerbating financial strains, many patients struggle to afford the required frequency of sessions, even at the previous cost of GH¢360 per session.
For some, the financial burden translates to settling for just one or two sessions weekly, compromising their health and risking medical emergencies.
A visit to the Renal Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital post-increment reveals the dire impact of the cost hike, with numerous patients forced to forego treatment due to financial constraints.
One elderly patient shared her ordeal, recounting resorting to street begging to gather funds for her dialysis. Strained familial relationships due to persistent financial requests illustrate the depth of the crisis.
Amidst these challenges, there’s a clarion call for the government to integrate dialysis treatment into the National Health Insurance Scheme, offering a lifeline to renal patients grappling with financial hardships.
“I usually have two sessions every week, but when I came on Sunday, the price had changed, so I went home. However, today I was able to get the treatment; I paid GH¢491, and they said they would not reduce it. Therefore, it is the government who can reduce it for us.
“People have blocked my number because I continuously ask for help from them. I had to sit on the streets to beg for money to top up for this session. So, I’m begging, please help us, help us,” the woman said as she was sobbing.
Raphael, another patient affected by the surge in dialysis costs, revealed that even when the treatment was priced at GH¢380, he could only afford one session per week, falling short of the required three.
Struggling to meet the financial demands, Raphael finds himself lingering in the hospital, unable to settle his dues for his last dialysis session.
Baffuor Kojo Ahenkorah, President of the Renal Patients Association of Ghana, echoed similar sentiments in conversation with GhanaWeb.
He urged the government to expedite approval of the GH¢2 million allocated by the National Health Insurance Authority to aid renal patients in coping with the escalated dialysis expenses.
“On Monday, about five people didn’t have dialysis; they went back home because they didn’t have the money. Yesterday, about six patients did not turn up for their session because they don’t have the money.
“Today is the same.Go inside and see, the beds are empty because people are not coming for treatment. I’m just praying I don’t hear any bad news this week that I have lost a patient,” he noted.
In September 2023, the Renal Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital which provides dialysis treatment to persons with malfunctioning kidneys from across Ghana, made news headlines after the cost of the treatment was increased from GH¢380 to GH¢765.
The then Minister for Health, Kweku Agyemang Manu, and the hospital’s leadership were summoned by the Parliament of Ghana over the increment.
Amid the brouhaha surrounding the increment, the Renal Unit was closed with the management of the hospital citing its rising cost of operation and accumulated debts, which, according to reports, resulted in the death of at least 18 people as a result of them not receiving their much-needed dialysis treatment.
The unit was subsequently reopened with the cost of dialysis treatment reverting to the original GH¢380. However, confirmed reports indicate that the cost of the treatment was increased to GH¢491, as of Sunday, May 12, 2024.
Bank of Ghana (BoG) has denied allegations of profiting from elevated interest rates.
In a statement released on its official X account, formerly Twitter, the Central Bank clarified that the increased interest rates actually escalate the expenses related to open market operations, ultimately leading to financial losses for the bank.
“Bank of Ghana does not benefit from high interest rates. On the contrary, high interest rates raise the cost of open market operations and lead to central bank losses.
But it is a necessary price to pay to bring down inflation,” the Bank of Ghana said on May 18, 2024.
This reaction follows criticism from businessman and the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, who accused the Bank of Ghana of unfairly benefiting from its policy of maintaining high interest rates, as outlined in an opinion piece.
Togbe Afede XIV expressed concerns that these interest rates, which he deemed as “unnecessarily high,” could exacerbate challenges faced by the local currency if appropriate actions are not taken to address the issue.
He further warned that the performance of the cedi is likely to suffer from ripple effects on the prices of goods and services, consequently impacting the overall cost of living.
“The truth is, all these variables are related. While the policy rate is an important tool of monetary policy, its misuse, as in our case, can have damaging effects.
As long as interest rates are kept unnecessarily high, our currency, the cedi, will continue to suffer adverse consequences, with pass-through effects on other prices, including transport fares, utility tariffs, and fuel prices.
Persistent cedi depreciation has been a key factor in our energy (including power) sector problems. We have always felt the need to adjust prices, not because consumers were not paying enough, but because the cedi has been depreciating,” Togbe Afede XIV wrote.
He added, “BOG concluded that their monetary policy rate decision underscores their commitment to balancing economic stability amid persistent ‘inflationary risks’ and supporting the sustainable growth of the economy.
President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, emphasized the need to initiate the anti-corruption campaign from the highest office, citing the Presidency as the breeding ground for corrupt practices.
During an interview on The Big Issue on Citi FM, he proposed alternative strategies to combat corruption, criticizing the efficacy of the Office of the Special Prosecutor in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.
Cudjoe highlighted several instances of corruption within the Presidential sphere, asserting that addressing corruption at this level is crucial for effectively addressing the issue.
“Charity begins at home, and so fighting corruption should start at the Presidency because that is where all the crooked things are cooked. Look at the Scholarship Secretariat scandal; is it not from there?
This Ministry of Special Initiatives, was it not harboured at the Presidency, which led to all these dams that were constructed like dugouts and wasted money all over the place. Just take a cursory look at that office.
“So, even creating the Office of the Special Prosecutor was like battling after the facts were established, and people with deep pockets will fight you because they have made enough money to fight you through.
We atIMANI saythat fighting corruption and waste begins at the Presidency.”
Using his signature phrase “spread the link,” he shared a video on May 15 showcasing the remarkable journey of a formerly wayward church member.
The footage depicted the unnamed woman engaging in behaviors deemed ungodly, including consuming alcohol, smoking shisha, and frequenting clubs.
A text across the screen read: “Then someone shared the link with me,” followed by a clip of Pastor Agyemang saying “share the link.”
The text and clip bridges the two sides of the video.

Recent media reports suggest that Amidu penned a letter to the Ghanaian President, urging for the dismissal of Kissi Agyebeng.
The President has forwarded the petition to the Chief Justice for further investigation.
In response, A Plus expressed his initial belief that Amidu was advocating for the common good. However, he now perceives Amidu as someone who prioritizes personal grievances over public interest, particularly when it comes to his successors.
His post read, “I was with the then vice president, John Dramani Mahama, at the castle the day Martin Amidu was sacked as attorney general. At the time, I believed his commitment to fighting corruption and upholding justice was crucial for our country’s progress.”
“However, with the benefit of hindsight and witnessing what he did to Betty Mould-Iddrisu, who succeeded him, and what he has done to Kissi Agyebeng, who also succeeded him as SP after this crybaby was removed for failing to apply common sense and running the OSP with emotions, hatred, pettiness, and a burning desire to waste taxpayer’s money on settling his personal scores, I have now come to understand clearly why he was sacked.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has lauded West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus as an outstanding player ahead of their pivotal Premier League clash on Sunday.
Guardiola’s team faces West Ham United at the Etihad, aiming for victory to secure their fourth consecutive Premier League title.
A draw or loss could potentially allow Arsenal to seize the title, intensifying the pressure on City in the upcoming match.
Guardiola recognized West Ham’s offensive strength, particularly praising Ghanaian Kudus, who has scored 13 goals across all competitions in his debut season with the Hammers.
“Now I’m not thinking one second about next season because it’s West Ham. Four players up front who can create something,” Guardiola stated as reported by EuroFoot.
“Kudus is an exceptional player. Bowen for many years and Antonio, when he’s fit, is unbelievable. Paqueta is a top-class player in that he can do many things. That’s why. All four, from nothing they can do something unique and special. That is my only concern right now.”
With Arsenal fans pinning their hopes on Kudus and his colleagues to potentially bolster their title aspirations, the Gunners currently trail City by two points heading into the last game.

Hard work and perseverance are his most cherished words.
“He always encourages Africans that all hope is not lost, that wisdom is not obsolete, that the optimists have it and always have it, not because they are always right but because they are positive.
He teaches that, the way to success is identifying talents, improving on them and applying same to the benefit of society.
Chairperson of the African Media Convention (AMC)and President of the African Editors Forum (Taef),Mr. Churchill Otieno, has reported that 14 journalists were killed in Africa between January 2023 and May 2024.
Speaking at the Third African Media Convention held at the International Conference Centre in Accra, Mr. Otieno also noted that, as of December 1, 2023, 67 journalists had been imprisoned for their work.
He urged journalists not to remain silent about these issues but to engage and collaborate to advocate for positive change.
Mr. Otieno highlighted that the deceased journalists were from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Somalia, Sudan, Nigeria, Mali, Rwanda, and Cameroon.
He emphasized the need for fair remuneration for journalists and media professionals, stating, “We must take a stand and advocate for fair compensation mechanisms, including equitable revenue-sharing models and copyright reforms, to ensure that journalists are adequately rewarded for their contributions.”
He further explained that advocating for fair compensation would not only uphold the dignity and livelihood of journalists but also strengthen the foundation of a sustainable and thriving media ecosystem, enabling Africa to tell its own story effectively.
Mr. Otieno pointed out that restricted access to data hinders journalists who rely on it for in-depth reporting and investigative journalism, especially in this digital age where social networks have become crucial information sources.
He called for greater transparency and accountability to ensure journalists have the data they need to hold those in power accountable and serve the public interest.
“By advocating for access to social media data, we empower journalists to fulfil their vital role as watchdogs of society and strengthen the foundations of media, freedom, and the foundations of our democracies,” he stated.
Mr. Churchill Otieno emphasized the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance the journalistic workforce by automating repetitive tasks and personalizing content delivery for diverse audiences. However, he acknowledged the challenges and risks associated with AI, such as job displacement, which cannot be ignored.
Speaking at the Third African Media Convention, Mr. Otieno urged African media professionals to engage critically with AI, ensuring its development and use are guided by ethical principles, transparency, and accountability.
He stated that by harnessing AI responsibly, the opportunities for innovation could significantly improve the quality of journalism and advance media freedom across the continent.
Mr. Otieno called for knowledge sharing and the exchange of ideas to collectively safeguard media freedom and promote excellence in journalism.
He stressed the importance of leveraging new technologies, exploring innovative storytelling methods, and forming partnerships to amplify the voices of the voiceless.

Kumah is set to be laid to rest later on Saturday at the Aduapakye Royal Cemetery.
A video of his final resting place at the cemetery has gone viral. The video, shared by ghpage_tv, showcases a well-built tomb with two openings.

The tomb is elegantly designed and beautifully decorated with flowers and other ornaments. The grave features a headstone displaying the details of the former minister.
Additionally, there is another grave in the tomb with a ledger bearing the name Juliana Kumah.

Dangote Refinery is seeking millions of barrels of U.S. crude oil, according to a document reviewed by Reuters.
The refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, aims to operate at full capacity soon, potentially becoming Africa’s largest refinery this year or next.
The tender document, shared by two traders, indicates that the refinery is looking to purchase two million barrels of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) Midland crude each month for a year, starting in July.
Meanwhile, Nigeria has a surplus of its own light sweet crude grades.
Traders reported that Nigeria’s May-loading cargoes are nearly sold out, with at least 30 June cargoes still available.
Despite the availability of local oil, WTI might not necessarily be cheaper than Nigerian crude.
The cost will depend on factors such as the timing of the sale and oil delivery, according to two other trade sources.
Additionally, Angola’s July loading program is expected to be announced soon, even as several June-loading cargoes remain available.
Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has expressed concerns about potential disruptions to the operations of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) following a petition seeking the removal of Kissi Agyebeng from office.
The petition, submitted by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu, urges President Akufo-Addo to remove Agyebeng, citing various infractions as grounds for his removal.
During an interview on Eyewitness News on May 17, Mr. Kpebu highlighted that the mere initiation of the removal process, coupled with its public announcement, casts a shadow over the OSP.
He emphasized that this situation creates an unwelcome distraction for the institution, especially at a critical juncture.
Nevertheless, Mr. Kpebu stressed the importance of allowing the democratic process and legal procedures to take their due course.
“The petition will have an impact because it is going to disrupt the OSP but we just hope that he will be strong and keep the fight going. But you can’t run away from the fact that even the announcement of this alone will cause him some embarrassment for it is quite a big disruption,” he stated.
Martin Kpebu, reflecting on the concerns outlined by Martin Amidu in his petition to the president, suggested that issues like non-compliance with a Right to Information (RTI) request, as cited, are not usually grounds for the removal of an officeholder.
Instead, Kpebu proposed addressing such concerns by escalating the matter to the RTI Commission and, if warranted, pursuing legal recourse.
Additionally, Kpebu drew comparisons with the police force, where instances of rights violations, such as unlawful arrests, are typically addressed through lawsuits seeking compensation rather than advocating for the removal of police officials.
“On the face of it, these are not matters ordinarily you should say somebody be removed. So let’s say, Mr Amidu asked for some information through the RTI request and he says Kissi Agyebeng didn’t give him.
But if you do an RTI request and the office holder doesn’t give you escalate it. You go to theRTI Commission and then if the commission makes a ruling in your case and the institution doesn’t comply, then you go to court.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed that Ghana’s security agencies continue their relentless pursuit of the perpetrators behind the brutal murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
Speaking at the closing session of the Third African Media Convention (AMC) in Accra, he assured, “The efforts of the law enforcement agencies to bring the killers of Hussein-Suale to book continue no matter how long it takes.”
In January 2019, Hussein-Suale was shot dead at Madina, near Accra, while driving home. The motive for his murder remains unresolved as the police are still searching for the killers.
According to media reports, two unidentified men on motorbikes shot him three times, killing him instantly. This incident shocked the media community, given Ghana’s notable record of press freedom.
Hussein-Suale’s undercover investigations had exposed human traffickers, corrupt officials, and judiciary staff across Africa. He worked with Tiger Eye, a highly secretive team of investigative journalists led by the renowned Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The murder of Ahmed Suale has drawn global condemnation from various human rights institutions, civil society organizations, and the media.
The African Editors’ Forum, organizers of the AMC, urged the Ghanaian government to diligently track down and bring Hussein-Suale’s killers to justice, as emphasized in a speech by its President, Churchill Otieno.
In his keynote address at the Convention, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting the rights and interests of Ghanaian journalists.
He emphasized that promoting the safety of journalists is a priority for the government.
“Freedom of the media is fundamental to the growth of any democratic society,” he noted, adding that his administration was bent on liaising with the media to advance the nation’s development agenda.
The three-day convention was held on the theme: “Enhancing Freedom, Innovation and Environmental Sustainability in a Dynamic Media Landscape”.
The convention covered emerging technologies in the media landscape, the advancement of best practices in the rapidly evolving news industry, and the creation of new revenue opportunities through partnerships.
Key highlights included discussions on the state of media in Africa, the impact of Artificial Intelligence on new media, integrating the newsroom into the business side of news, and innovative ideas for revenue generation and sustainable growth.
Organized by the UNESCO Addis Ababa Liaison Office to the AU and UNECA, the African Union, the convention was hosted by the Ministry of Information, the Ghana Journalists Association, and various media partners.
Meanwhile, the Committee for the Protection of Journalists, Africa, has welcomed President Akufo-Addo’s reassurance of the continued pursuit of justice for Ahmed Hussein-Suale’s family.
“CPJ welcomes mention of the case and calls for authorities in #Ghana to match words with action and transparency. Over 5 years since the murder, who are the current suspects and what is the status of the investigation?,” it posted on its X (formerly Twitter”) handle.
