Voter ID card replacement for Akosombo Dam victims to begin on May 30 – EC

Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the commencement of voter ID card replacement for victims of the Akosombo dam spillage starting on Thursday, May 30.

The Commission said it would replace all the voter cards for the residents of the affected communities by the dam spillage free of charge.

“As a well-meaning Commission, it is our duty to support all eligible voters to vote in the upcoming General Election.

The replacement of voter ID cards which is scheduled to commence from 30th May 2024, is intended to fulfill that duty.

“Recognising the untold harships and economic loss suffered by victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, we agree with Hon. Fiifi Kwetey of the NDC to support them.

In solidarity with the victims and as a gesture of goodwill, the Commission is happy to announce that replacement of Voter ID Cards for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage will be free of charge,” the commission said in a statement it posted on its official X page on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has indicated that a class action lawsuit against the government on behalf of the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage is imminent.

He stated that, after careful consideration of the issues and the government’s complete neglect of the victims, legal action is necessary to compel the government to fully compensate them.

Furthermore, Ablakwa noted that despite intensive efforts to secure government support for the thousands of people affected by the disaster, including new homes and assistance for those who lost property, there has been little progress.

In an interview with Joy FM, the Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament emphasized that the victims feel betrayed and ignored eight months after the catastrophe, stressing that they deserve compensation for their losses.

“To be very sincere with you, we have begun discussions with our lawyers. We’ve done everything we can do in Parliament. We have filed motions, we’ve made statements, we’ve filed urgent questions and we have engaged ministers.

It’s clear that this is a clear case of government abdicating and engaging in cruel neglect. So, we are considering a class action.

“We are talking to our lawyers, and we want to take legal action to compel the government to be responsible and be responsive to the plight of the victims of this man-made disaster which they created. It appears that that’s the only realistic option we have now,” Mr. Ablakwa noted.

Phil Foden bags Premier League Player of the Season award

Phil Foden clinches Premier League Player of the Season award after an outstanding season with Manchester City.

He was nominated earlier this month alongside notable players such as Erling Haaland, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Cole Palmer, Alexander Isak, Ollie Watkins, and Virgil van Dijk.

Now, the 23-year-old has emerged as the deserving winner of the prestigious accolade.

The England international said: “To win this award is an achievement that I am extremely proud of. The Premier League is acknowledged as the greatest league in the world, and it is a pleasure to have been nominated with so many other great players who have all enjoyed special seasons for their clubs.

Overall, I’ve been very happy with the way I have played this season and really pleased that I have been able to contribute with the goals and assists throughout the season.

I’d like to thank all of the City staff, coaches and especially my teammates because without them this wouldn’t be possible. And I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me as the award means a lot.”

The versatile winger, who also excels as an attacking midfielder, has enjoyed his most successful season yet with City, tallying an impressive 25 goals and 11 assists across all competitions.

His stellar performances have propelled Pep Guardiola’s team to the brink of securing their fourth consecutive Premier League title, and they are also vying for victory in the FA Cup final.

Foden’s exceptional individual campaign will culminate when City, in pursuit of the Premier League title, take on West Ham on Sunday, the final day of the season.

A victory against David Moyes’ side would secure City’s second consecutive title, edging out Arsenal in the race for the championship.

  • Ghana School of Law advocates for immediate infrastructure improvement

Management of the Ghana School of Law has voiced concerns regarding the stagnant infrastructure development at the institution since its inception.

They lamented the insufficient facilities to accommodate the growing student population, often resorting to renting public address systems for events at high costs.

Director Nana Yaw Barima Kodie Oppong appealed to the government and philanthropic organizations for assistance in expanding the school’s infrastructure to facilitate the training of more lawyers.

“If you come there, the rest of us have managed to squeeze from stones to be able to even maintain what we already have which was constructed in 1958 during the reign of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and has seen very little expansion in terms of infrastructure until recently, when we had just a block or so added to it.

“Otherwise, it was a school that was originally meant for about 96 people. We have had to rent from even recently established universities. The ego alone is so bruised that our own children are now providing facilities for us as if we are homeless.”

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, emphasized the necessity of revitalizing the Ghana School of Law.

He assured a joint effort with the President to tackle this issue.

“I really felt sad and my spirit went low when I visited the law school recently upon their invitation to come and deliver a paper on ethics in legal practice. And I saw that there had been no change since I left the school in 1982.

“And with all these rich lawyers in very high positions, how could our school be that low? Isn’t it a shame? We need to do more. And so I have been putting a bit of pressure on His Excellency the President for us to set the ball rolling.”

Bawumia promises new bailout plan for victims of defunct Gold Coast Fund investors

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, revealed during his Northern Region tour that the Ministry of Finance is devising a new bailout plan for investors affected by the collapse of the Gold Coast Fund.

While interacting with a group of aggrieved investors seeking recourse for their losses, Dr. Bawumia assured them of the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns.

The investors, who have been grappling with challenges in recovering their investments following the closure of the banks, have been advocating for compensation.

Dr. Bawumia’s announcement brings hope to these investors, offering a potential solution to their predicament.

Acknowledging the hardships faced by the investors, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the Ministry of Finance had previously provided a bailout of 50,000 Ghana cedis per investor and is now working on additional relief measures.

“We would have lost so many jobs and for some of the securities like Gold Coast securities, these were investments that were made by people and not the banking sector.

These are not banking deposits, these are investments made by people. And people basically make their own evaluations of the risks in investing in certain institutions.”

“Sometimes when they make a lot of money, we don’t hear any complaints but when they lose monies, then we may hear some complaints. And I know that it’s not easy for a lot of people who have put provident funds and so on into these institutions.

“The Ministry of Finance came out with a bailout, and I think each repository that they gave was about 50 thousand Ghana cedis and I think that the ministry is preparing another bailout for them because we believe that they are going through a lot of hard times,“ he stated.

GBA,GJA, 65 others risk deregistration for failing to update records

By June 30, 2024, 65 registered professional bodies, including the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), face the risk of having their membership revoked from the national register of companies.

This consequence stems from their failure to submit annual accounts and update their certificate of membership.

The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has taken legal action in response, citing non-compliance with Section 16 of the Professional Bodies Registration Act 1973 as the reason for these measures.

A statement issued on May 13 noted that “the exercise has become imperative due to failure by these Professional Bodies to file their Annual Accounts and update their Certificate of Membership in accordance with Section 16 of the Professional Bodies Registration Act, 1973, NRCD 143 with the Registrar of Professional Bodies.”

“Following a meeting with the Executive Council Members of all registered Professional Bodies, the Registrar of Companies (ROC) who is the regulator of Professional Bodies, directed those who had been in default for more than two years and had not updated their members’ certification to do so by the end of December 2023 or risk their name being struck off the Professional Bodies Register in accordance with section 11(b) of the Professional Bodies Act 1973(NRCD 143).

Currently, Sixty-Five (65) out of Ninety-Two (91) registered Professional Bodies (PBs) have not complied with the directive of the Registrar of Professional Bodies to renew their Professional Bodies Certificates and that of their members and therefore have been found to be in default,” it added.

However, the ORC emphasized that professional bodies in default still have the opportunity to rectify their status by filing their Annual Accounts before the June 30, 2024 deadline.

This filing must include the Audited Accounts of the Body, an updated list of its Members, and any changes made to its Constitution.

Failure to comply will result in the removal of defaulters from the Register starting at the end of June 2024, as outlined in sections 15 (1)(2) and 16(1)(2).

Despite this, the Office of the Registrar of Companies stated its commitment to ongoing awareness campaigns and public education regarding the importance of registered Professional Bodies maintaining good standing with the ORC.

Attached is the list of sixty-five (65) registered Professional Bodies in default as of April 22, 2024.

  • I laugh at govt’s digitalization drive to fight corruption – Domelevo

I laugh at govt’s digitalization drive to fight corruption – Domelevo

Former Auditor General Daniel Domelevo has indicated that digitalization alone cannot help fight corruption.

According to him, until governments ensure that there are consequences for misbehaviour, the fight against corruption will only be lip service.

Daniel Domelevo who was speaking to Accra-based GhOne Television in an interview on May 18, 2024, indicated that IT fraud is even on a larger scale and if stricter punishments are not put in place to deter people from engaging in corrupt activities the country may end up throwing its money away in the digitization drive.

“I have seen the government’s drive at digitalization and we are being made to believe this is all aimed at fighting corruption and I laugh. Who says there is no digital corruption?

IT fraud is on a higher scale than even manual one so if there are no consequences for misbehaviour, the fraud will be digitized beyond what you can even think about and it will mean we are throwing our money after a bad money,” he said.

Family curses Nana Agradaa at cemetary over alleged gold theft, assault

After a series of public protests at Parliament House and other institutions against Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, accusing her of seizing their pot of gold, a woman named Sarah, accompanied by her relatives, has turned to spiritual methods to reclaim their asset and curse the self-proclaimed Evangelist.

Sarah and her daughter were previously seen protesting against Evangelist Asiedua, also known as Nana Agradaa, alleging theft of their pot of gold and an acid attack on her daughter.

Despite their efforts, they have been unable to recover the gold.

In a new development, they have been spotted at a cemetery performing rituals and invoking curses on Nana Agradaa.

Dressed in black and red attire, Sarah and her family members were seen pouring libations and chanting incantations against Nana Agradaa in the Nzema language.

A circulating video captures the family invoking curses on Nana Agradaa with fervor and determination.

    The Earlier Street Protest

On Thursday, May 16, 2024, Sarah, 30, and her daughter took to the streets to protest against Rev. Patricia Oduro Asiedua, also known as Nana Agradaa, the General Overseer of Heaven Way Chapel.

Sarah accused Nana Agradaa of gold theft, fraud, and involvement in an acid attack on her daughter.

Police sources confirmed receiving a protest notification from Sarah Abraham, who also expressed her intention to submit petitions to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other relevant bodies seeking justice.

Those close to Sarah say her determined pursuit aims to recover the gold and secure justice for her daughter, who is believed to have been a victim of an acid attack amid the ongoing battle over the treasured metal.

Her notification of protest to the police stated, “We write to notify the Police of our intention to hold a peaceful two-person protest on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from the hours of 9:00 am to 11:00 noon.

The purpose of this protest is to draw the public’s attention to Rev. Patricia Oduro Asiedua, the General Overseer of the Heaven Way Chapel, known in public life as Nana Agradaa and Evangelist Mama Pat, on an alleged criminal gold theft and acid assault.

The protest will start from the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra, and the petitions to the Inspector General of Police, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, and Peace Watch Ghana will be presented afterward.”

    Background

Sarah’s grandmother, as a gesture of gratitude for her commitment and service, reportedly bequeathed her a pot filled with gold before her demise.

Before passing away, her grandmother advised her to have the gold blessed by a pastor. Following this counsel, Sarah sought the spiritual assistance of Nana Agradaa, also known as Evangelist Mama Pat.

However, the situation took a distressing turn when Nana Agradaa allegedly confiscated the pot of gold, insisting on a fee of GH¢1000 for prayers, which Sarah paid.

Later, Nana Agradaa demanded an additional GH¢4000, a sum beyond Sarah’s financial means.

Unable to meet this new financial demand, Sarah requested the return of her gold, but her repeated efforts over the years have been unsuccessful.

  • NDC rejects offline voter registration

    NDC rejects offline voter registration

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) proposal to switch to offline voter registration if the current online system continues to face challenges.

Instead, the NDC has urged the Commission to promptly fix and restore data connectivity at all registration centers to ensure continuous registration, timely data verification, and enhanced transparency.

The registration exercise, which began on May 7, 2024, and is expected to conclude on May 27, has encountered numerous issues, including poor internet connectivity and malfunctioning biometric machines.

In response to these challenges, the Commission instructed its officers to switch to offline registration if necessary.

However, at a news conference in Accra on Thursday (May 16), NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey voiced strong opposition to the offline registration mode, labeling it as deficient.

He argued that offline registration could undermine the integrity of the electoral process, expose the system to exploitation, and introduce errors that could skew the outcome.

“This approach lacks real-time oversight, making it difficult to verify data promptly and transparently, thereby opening the door to potential biases and manipulations—particularly in targeted districts and regions to the disadvantage of the NDC. These actions compromise transparency and trust,” Kwetey stated.

He acknowledged that technical challenges are an inevitable aspect of any large-scale logistical operation, but emphasized that registering voters offline is not the ideal solution.

He urged the EC to promptly address the systemic issues to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the electoral process.

“We demand that the EC be proactive in implementing robust preventive measures rather than resorting to offline registration,” the General Secretary emphasized.

Kwetey also raised concerns about incorrect figures released by the Commission during the ongoing voter registration exercise.

For example, he noted that on May 11, 2024, the Party alerted the Commission to anomalies in figures published on its website and social media handles. Although the EC acknowledged the issue on May 12 and made corrections, Kwetey claimed the “corrected” figures still contained errors.

In the Oti Region, for instance, he alleged that the Day Two figure of 578 was “erroneously” swapped with the Day Three figure of 1,515. If these figures were aligned correctly, the Day Two national total would be 18,330, not 19,267, and Day Three’s total would be 49,553, not 48,616, as stated by the Commission.

“Similarly, the Day Three figure for Bono East in their corrected data is 771. However, this is incorrect. Bono East recorded 2,252 per our provisional data. This discrepancy will affect the total registered voters of 5,118 for Bono East for the four days as stated by the EC,” he added.

“This situation exemplifies what we term ‘transpositional rigging,’ where figures are shuffled between categories without affecting the overall total,” he explained.

He urged the EC to promptly rectify the inaccuracies in the data released on May 12, 2024, noting that such discrepancies could raise suspicions among parties.

“We expect a thorough review and correction of all figures to prevent further errors and uphold the integrity of our electoral process,” he stressed.

He assured Ghanaians that the NDC remains vigilant and committed to safeguarding all votes, promising that every ballot cast on December 7 would be accounted for.

Kwetey reiterated calls for an independent investigation into the missing biometric verification kits to eliminate any mistrust among stakeholders.

Kumah passed away at the Suhum Government Hospital at the age of 45 on March 7.

He was being transported to Accra for further medical attention when his condition worsened, necessitating a stopover in Suhum.

He was initially slated to be flown to Germany for treatment of an undisclosed ailment.

The late MP is survived by his wife, Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, and their six children.

‘The Royal fridge’ – This 74-year-old Manhyia Palace fridge has never undergone maintenance

Manhyia Palace Museum worker, Justice, provided insights into a vintage appliance as part of the V3 report commemorating the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s reign as Asantehene.

He revealed that the refrigerator, which was acquired 74 years ago, has never undergone any maintenance or repairs.

Remarkably, it has never had its motor replaced or its refrigerant gas refilled.

“This fridge, 74 years this year, still works. We have never changed the motor; we have never filled the gas. As it was in 1950, so it is today,” he said.

“I am telling you; this fridge is 74 years old this year. We haven’t changed the motor since then, we haven’t filled the gas,” he added.

The TV3 presenter inspected the fridge and found it in perfect working condition, with ice still forming inside when turned on.

  • Bleaching, body enhancement; the evolving cause of high blood pressure

Bleaching, body enhancement; the evolving cause of high blood pressure

In Ghana, it’s increasingly common for both women and some men to resort to skin lightening and body enhancement methods.

Many individuals opt for skincare creams and pills to achieve their desired lighter complexion and improve their physical appearance.

However, recent findings suggest that the use of skin bleaching products and medications may contribute to hypertension, or high blood pressure.

Luv News delves into this concerning trend, which also extends to expectant mothers who are resorting to medication abuse in hopes of delivering babies with lighter skin tones.

“I looked ugly whenever I watched myself in a mirror. I felt I had a disfigured body and skin so I decided to tone my skin. I wasn’t happy,” Aba Martin, popular Ghanaian Tiktoker, revealed on the Delay TV show as she confirmed her high school teacher made her feel less about herself.

Aba Dope, widely known by her moniker, underwent a transformation from her original dark skin to her current fair complexion due to dissatisfaction with her appearance.

Her journey mirrors that of countless Ghanaian women, both young and old, who have opted to alter their skin tone for various reasons.

Skin bleaching, also referred to as skin lightening or toning, is a prevalent cosmetic practice worldwide, aimed at achieving a lighter complexion.

This trend is often driven by cosmetic aspirations deeply rooted in historical, economic, socio-cultural, and psychosocial factors.

It typically involves the use of topical products containing substances like corticosteroids, hydroquinone, or mercury to lighten the skin.

Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, an expert in kidney disease at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, warns that the absorption of these chemical substances into the skin and subsequently into the body can lead to high blood pressure.

“When you absorb some of these steroids into your body for a long period of time which makes them fair, that would lead to hypertension. Steroids directly is the cause of hypertension. These steroids can also lead to diabetes. Diabetes, especially affecting the kidneys, when not controlled can lead to hypertension,” he said.

    Corticosteroids, Hydroquinone, and Hypertension

Corticosteroids, a type of medication, possess the ability to alleviate inflammation, regulate the immune system’s responses, and address hormonal irregularities. They find utility in treating various ailments such as allergies and eczema, a dermatological condition.

However, corticosteroids have the potential to induce hypertension through a mechanism involving the overstimulation of the mineralocorticoid receptor.

This process triggers sodium retention within the kidneys, leading to volume expansion and consequent elevation in blood pressure levels.

    Dr. Koranteng Tannor

Hydroquinone, a skin-lightening compound, serves as a beneficial treatment for various forms of hyperpigmentation.

However, excessive usage of this chemical has been linked to adverse health outcomes, including diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease.

According to a 2023 report from the Integrated African Health Observatory, skin bleaching has emerged as a significant global public health issue, with approximately 80% of African women regularly employing skin-whitening products.

In Ghana, the prevalence rate of this phenomenon stands at 39%, reflecting a concerning trend where many women opt for cosmetic creams in pursuit of a complexion deemed desirable by Ghanaian men.

“There may be some skin bleaching products that do not contain these steroids, like the natural products. But how many of these women are not aware of the component of the bleaching creams they use.

Disturbingly, some expectant mothers have caught on the vogue as they take in medications like Prednisolone in an attempt to bleach their unborn babies.

“Interestingly, some women who take these products are now doing that because they believe their children will turn out to be fair,” he revealed.

The Food and Drugs Authority in Ghana intensified a nationwide Post Market Surveillance (PMS) and enforcement on the ban of hydroquinone in cosmetic products but the sale of the product seems to be on the rise on the market.

“The FDA must have a look at the content of these products because the steroids are too high,” Dr. Koranteng Tannor said.

However, skin bleaching is only one of the many causes and risk factors of high blood pressure.

Hypertension, as a major cause of death amongst Africans, comes about as a result of various lifestyle habits.

While family history, and ageing are termed “uncontrolled” risk factors of the disease, poor dieting, intake of excess salt, and sedentary lifestyle are common causes of the disease.

“Having hypertension is not a death sentence. You can actually live long if you control your salt intake, control your dieting, take your medications and exercise regularly,” Dr. Koranteng Tannor advised.

  • Arne Slot confirms a take over from Klopp as Liverpool coach

Arne Slot confirms a take over from Klopp as Liverpool coach

Feyenoord boss Arne Slot has confirmed that he will succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s head coach.

Earlier this year, Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool after nine successful seasons with the club.

Initially, Liverpool had their sights set on Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

However, Alonso opted to stay with Die Werkself for another season, prompting Liverpool to turn their attention to Slot. The Dutchman has already signed a contract to take over as coach this summer.

Feyenoord marked Slot’s departure with an emotional tribute ahead of their final match of the season.

Speaking with the media, Slot said [via ESPN]: “I can confirm that I will become the trainer there next year.

“Until now I was not thinking about this being the build up to my last match, but that starts coming now. At the beginning of the week you are thinking about training and those kind of things.

But the feeling gets stronger now. That is why I’m a little bit late now [for the news conference], because I wanted to say goodbye to some people personally and take time for them, more then just shaking hands.

“So yeah, the feeling grows. I understand that good results help, but it is very nice to feel that people really are thinking it’s a pity that I’m leaving. You can say that with words, but you can feel it if people truly think that way. That does mean a lot to me.”

Slot has been compared to Klopp in terms of his playing style, and bringing the Dutchman to Anfield will cost Liverpool close to £13m ($16m) in compensation to Feyenoord, according to reports.

The 45-year-old manager led Feyenoord to an Eredivisie title last season and finished this season in second place behind PSV.

Slot will lead Feyenoord for the final time at De Kuip on May 19 as they face Excelsior, before bidding farewell to the Feyenoord faithful.

Chelsea’s Palmer wins Premier League Young Player of the Season award

Cole Palmer, aged 22, has been awarded the Premier League Young Player of the Season for his standout performances during the 2023/24 campaign at Chelsea.

The England international triumphed over a competitive field including Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, Kobbie Mainoo, William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, and Destiny Udogie to clinch the prestigious accolade.

The Premier League officially announced Palmer’s achievement via a post on social media.

Palmer joined Stamford Bridge last summer on transfer deadline day, departing Manchester City’s academy.

Since then, he has been instrumental, scoring 22 goals and providing ten assists this season, propelling Chelsea to sixth place in the Premier League standings.

Currently, Mauricio Pochettino’s team holds a three-point advantage over Newcastle United in seventh place, but their inferior goal difference (13 compared to Newcastle’s 21) means that sixth place is not yet secured.

Chelsea’s final game of the season against Bournemouth on Sunday will be crucial in determining their European football fate.

Meanwhile, Newcastle will face Brentford in their last fixture, with all matches scheduled to kick off at 4pm UK time.

Parliament gives green light for a $150m loan for GARID project

Despite opposition from the minority caucus, Parliament has granted approval for a $150 million loan from the World Bank for the ongoing Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, aimed at mitigating flooding issues in the capital.

The minority argued against approving the loan, citing mishandling of a previous $200 million loan for the GARID project by the government.

However, following a headcount vote in favor of the majority caucus, the loan facility was ultimately approved by the House.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Bedzrah, a member of the Works and Housing Committee, expressed his concerns, stating, “If the whole Odaw [river] has not been drained for two years and $200 million has been allocated and the Odaw river has not been drained or desilted or dredged I don’t see why we need additional 150million again.

2023/24 Premier League season has been a showcase of unique celebrations, with West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus’ signature sitting celebration hailed as one of the highlights.

The Premier League’s official social media platform featured a collection of the season’s most memorable celebrations, starting with Christopher Nkunku’s inventive “party trick” following his goal in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Nkunku’s celebration was marked by him inflating a blue balloon post-scoring at the Amex Stadium.

Adding to the iconic moments was Cole Palmer’s “cold” gesture, which captured the fans’ imagination.

Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus’ distinctive celebration, where he sits atop the stadium hoarding, was recognized as one of the top nine celebrations of the season, cementing its place in Premier League lore.

Kudus, who was runner-up for West Ham’s Player of the Season, had a remarkable first season in England, netting seven goals and contributing six assists.

He also led the league in successful dribbles for the season.

In total, Kudus has tallied thirteen goals across all competitions for West Ham and earned the distinction of being named the second-best player in the Hammers’ season-end accolades.

  • Juventus’s Massimilano Allegri dismissed after explosive rant

Juventus’s Massimilano Allegri dismissed after explosive rant

Serie A giants Juventus have sacked manager Massimiliano Allegri with immediate effect and are expected to replace him with Thiago Motta.

Allegri’s tenure at Juventus has ended with two games remaining in the season.

Bologna manager Thiago Motta, who has had an impressive season, is the frontrunner to take over from Allegri.

The club have confirmed the news after releasing a statement, which read: “Juventus announces that it has relieved Massimiliano Allegri of his position as head coach of the men’s first team.

“The exoneration follows certain behaviours during and after the Coppa Italia final that the club deemed incompatible with the values of Juventus and the behaviour that those who represent it should have.

“It ends a period of collaboration, which began in 2014, restarted in 2021 and ended, after the previous three seasons together, with the Italian Cup final.

“The club wishes Massimiliano Allegri good luck in his future endeavours.”

The statement referenced Allegri’s behavior in the Coppa Italia final against Atalanta on Wednesday. Although Juventus won the match 1-0, Allegri was handed a two-match ban and fined $5,400 (€5,000/£4,200) for losing his temper in stoppage time.

The former Juventus manager ripped off his jacket and was sent off by the referee, after which he sarcastically applauded the decision.

Juventus still have two Serie A fixtures remaining before the 2023/24 season ends. The Old Lady will face Bologna on Monday (May 20) and Monza on May 26. According to GOAL’s Romeo Agresti, Juventus will appoint U19 coach Paolo Montero as their caretaker coach for these final matches.

Currently, Juventus sits in fourth place in the league table after a disappointing campaign. Their spot in the top four is not yet guaranteed, with Atalanta trailing just four points behind and having a game in hand on Juventus.

Maybe I am a bit crazy but who does that – Kofi Amoabeng still in shock over govt’s decision to collapse local banks

Prominent Ghanaian businessman and co-founder of the defunct UT Bank, Kofi Amoabeng, remains astonished by the government’s decision to collapse several banks in 2017 over claims of misappropriation of funds.

In an appearance on Joy News’ “Exclusive” with Benjamin Akakpo, where they discussed the state of Ghana’s economy and the government’s performance in recent years, Amoabeng expressed his surprise at the government’s decision to spend a whopping six billion dollars ($6bn) on a purported banking sector cleanup and later goes to IMF for a loan of three billion.

“There was a cleansing in the financial sector and we used 25 billion govt figures. That was about 6 billion dollars. And after loosing 6 billion in the cleaning we were left with the option of going to the IMF for a loan of 3bn.

And I mean really? who does that ?” he quizzed.

On his part, government could sill have done that clean up to the best of its ability and attained the best of results with half the amount it spent.

“And I bet the govt could have done that cleansing in any form they wanted to about half that amount at best” he stated.

argued that the government could have investigated the alleged misappropriations and provided bailouts to the struggling banks.

He suggested that once the banks had regained their footing in the market, they could have repaid the loans. According to Amoabeng, the government should not have collapsed the banks in 2017.

While expressing his frustration, Amoabeng highlighted the need for measured silence to avoid being perceived as bitter due to his victimization in the cleanup.

He referenced a similar situation in the United States in 2008, where the government cushioned banks facing a similar crisis. In contrast, he noted that in Ghana, local banks were shut down while foreign banks were allowed to remain operational.

He fumed “There is a bit of hatred , jealousy not investigating and so on and so forth. I don’t want to talk about that because it will be like so he his bank was taken so he is bitter.

We don’t do that. when banks are having problems, you investigate and bail them out. And thy thrive or survive and pay what they have to pay.it happened in America with bigger banks in 2008.

We did a process which cleared the indigenous banks, leaving the country for foreign banks.
who does that? I can’t even explain, ask myself maybe I’m a bit crazy. How can anybody that way about his own country”.

Asking about how he will define the actions of government he said that move was a “clear mismanagement, they messed up” he added.

  • How footballers neutralise ‘juju’ with pork fat

How footballers neutralise ‘juju’ with pork fat

The topic of black magic, or ‘juju,’ has long been a contentious issue in football, particularly within the African context.

This debate has been reignited by Naa Afrowa, a descendant of a family renowned for pioneering pork sales in Accra.

In a recent episode of GhanaWeb TV’s People & Places, she highlighted the various advantages of pork, emphasizing its nutritional value and other benefits.

Naa Afrowa revealed that within the football community, there is a belief that pork fat can counteract negative spells cast upon players. This belief once made pork fat a lucrative commodity for her family’s business.

However, due to associated risks and a shift in business focus, her family has since ceased this practice.

“Pork fat has been used traditionally to treat wounds. Footballers used to buy it from us, convinced that it could ward off any curses. It was a significant source of income, but we’ve discontinued it,” she explained to GhanaWeb’s Etsey Atisu.

Legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan acknowledges the existence of juju in football.

He recalled that during his youth football days, people performed rituals believed to ensure victory.

Gyan admitted that many players resort to juju in secrecy.

“It’s real; if it’s named, it exists. We were often instructed to perform certain rituals to win, and failure to comply would mean causing the team’s defeat.

“I recall a game where we were promised two goals if we followed specific instructions. There’s a common belief that a goal can be ‘locked’ with juju, and despite clear chances, only one goal will be scored,” he recounted on Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV.

He added that “People have their beliefs. Some may visit a spiritualist right after church. Many players, if honest, engage in such practices.

“Observant individuals can notice these rituals, though they’re kept secret. What one does in private, like a pastor before a sermon, remains their secret power. Some deeply involved in juju may outwardly appear pious,” Gyan concluded.

Bayern Munich is reportedly eyeing two specific signings for their squad this summer, according to reports from the Independent.

Independent. Initially identified as transfer targets by coach Thomas Tuchel, it has been confirmed that Tuchel will be leaving Bayern, ending any speculation about a U-turn.

Tuchel had emphasized the need for a defensive midfielder, especially after their pursuit of Fulham’s João Palhinha fell through last summer.

Additionally, the club is seeking to acquire a playmaker.

One of the names linked to Bayern is Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, 29, with the club’s hierarchy likely to provide their new manager with a substantial budget for the upcoming transfer window.

Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, 27, and Everton’s 22-year-old pivot Amadou Onana are also under consideration for the No. 6 position.

This information was highlighted by Bild’s Christian Falk on the FC Bayern Insider podcast, which noted that several players will be on the Bundesliga side’s shortlist.

Ghanaian actor and former footballer Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, has claimed that only Brazilian star Neymar and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland can match his footballing skills.

Lil Win had a brief football career with Ghanaian Division One League side New Edubiase, where he played in a few matches.

Reflecting on his experience in domestic football, the actor declared himself one of the best players to have recently graced the Ghanaian football scene.

He further revealed that his ball-handling skills are so impressive that he frequently gets fouled by opponents during matches.

“I’m the best striker; if I have the ball, you will have to foul me. I have good turning and speed, and across Ghana, I am the number one best player,” Lil Win said in an interview on Accra-based 3FM.

According to the comic actor, based on his observation, “Neymar and Haaland are my colleagues in football. No Ghanaian player is on my level.”

He added that while opportunities like corner kicks and set pieces are often squandered in matches, he consistently makes the most of those chances.

“In Ghana, we don’t make good use of corner kicks and set pieces, but abroad, it’s a goal. If I’m in a match and there is a corner kick, it will surely be a goal,” he added.

Starboy Partey models in Arsenal new kit for next season? A sign of his stay ?

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey was among several Arsenal players who modeled the team’s new home kit for the 2024/25 season.

Adidas, the kit manufacturer, released the new design featuring club captain Martin Ødegaard, England star Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Gabriel Martinelli alongside Partey.

The kit retains Arsenal’s traditional red and white colors, with blue stripes representing the Gunners’ culture.

Mikel Arteta’s side hopes that the improved kit quality will translate into better performance next season.

Partey, who is in his final year at the club, has been linked with moves away from Arsenal.

However, his participation in the kit launch suggests that the club intends to keep him.

Since joining the Gunners, Partey has been a crucial force in the midfield, helping Arsenal emerge as strong contenders for the Premier League title.

  • Gyampo, Domelevo, others petition Parliament to probe EOCO’s conduct over Cecilia Dapaah’s case

Gyampo, Domelevo, others petition Parliament to probe EOCO’s conduct over Cecilia Dapaah’s case

Several prominent Ghanaians, including former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, have petitioned Parliament for a bipartisan investigation into the conduct of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) regarding the investigation into the discovery of a large sum of money at the residence of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

The group, which also includes outspoken anti-corruption campaigner Martin Kpebu, security analyst Dr. Adam Bona, academic Professor Ransford Gyampo, and over 100 other individuals from various backgrounds, argues in their petition that EOCO had sufficient grounds to investigate the former Minister for money laundering.

They assert that she has been inconsistent and unable to provide a credible source for the significant amount of money seized at her residence by the Special Prosecutor.

“The failure to explain the source of the money should have been the cornerstone of the investigation,” the petition which was submitted to Parliament on Thursday, May 16, 2024, noted among others.

It also raised concerns about what the group described as the deliberate refusal by EOCO to take steps to protect the money which had been seized from the residence of the former minister by the OSP.

“Upon receipt of the docket, EOCO did not act timeously to seize the money that the OSP was returning to Madam Cecilia Dapaah as publicly stated by the OSP”.

The petition further highlighted inconsistencies in EOCO’s public statements and actions during the investigation.

This development arises amidst a standoff between state anti-corruption agencies probing the former Minister regarding the money stash.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has previously stated that EOCO appears reluctant to investigate the matter, despite receiving detailed information from the OSP.

  • Don’t pay attention to Franklin Cudjoe’s false claims on SALL disenfranchisement – EC

Don’t pay attention to Franklin Cudjoe’s false claims on SALL disenfranchisement – EC

Electoral Commission (EC) has firmly denied allegations of disenfranchising the people of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) during the 2020 parliamentary elections.

The EC has urged the public to disregard the claims made by Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, who has been perpetuating the false narrative that the EC disenfranchised SALL voters in 2020.

Cudjoe accused the EC of failing to ensure the participation of SALL residents in the voting process, thereby disenfranchising them.

However, the EC refuted these allegations in a statement issued on Wednesday, May 15, insisting that it did not disenfranchise the residents of the newly formed Guan Constituency at any point.

The EC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all eligible voters are able to participate in the electoral process.

Franklin Cudjoe argued that the EC’s December 6, 2020 statement that excluded “voters in the SALL Traditional Areas from voting in the election for a Member of Parliament was a flagrant violation of the right to vote of the said voters, which amounts to being disenfranchised.”

However, the EC in its statement issued on Thursday, May 16, once again denied that it disfranchised the people of SALL, stressing that it is not in the interest of the Commission to disenfranchise any citizen.

“The General Public is urged once again to ignore the campaign of Franklin Cudjoe to perpetuate the false narrative that the Electoral Commission disenfranchised SALL voters in 2020.

“As indicated in our previous statement, it is not in the interest of the Commission to disenfranchise any citizen. The blame does not lie with the Electoral Commission which only performed its constitutional duties following the creation of the Guan District. The discerning public can, based on the facts outlined above, ascertain the truth for themselves.

“In spite of the Electoral Commission’s Press Statement on 15th May 2024, backed by documents, refuting the false and unfounded allegations by the President of Imani to the effect that, the Commission disenfranchised voters in the Guan Constituency (SALL), Franklin Cudjoe has continued to misinform and mislead the public by making reference to a public statement issued by the Commission on 6th December 2020.

“We note also that other citizens, such as Prof. Kwaku Asare, have also made reference to the 6th December 2020 statement issued by the Commission.”

  • Judges set to hear the Semenya case before a verdict

Judges set to hear the Semenya case before a verdict

Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights is set to hear the case involving middle-distance runner Caster Semenya on Wednesday, before issuing a final ruling.

Semenya, aged 32, was born with differences of sexual development (DSD) and is unable to compete in female track events without undergoing testosterone-reducing treatment.

She contends that World Athletics discriminates against athletes with her condition.

In a related case last July, the ECHR ruled in Semenya’s favor regarding testosterone levels in female athletes.

However, this case does not directly challenge sporting regulations or DSD rules but rather the Swiss government’s failure to safeguard Semenya’s rights, stemming from a Swiss Supreme Court ruling three years ago.

The Swiss government has requested that the matter be referred to the court’s Grand Chamber.

The ECHR Grand Chamber, comprising 17 judges and convened in exceptional cases, issues verdicts that cannot be appealed.

Since this case involves the Swiss government rather than athletic governing bodies, any decision is unlikely to immediately impact current restrictions on DSD athletes.

World Athletics regulations impose limits on testosterone levels for female runners competing in track events ranging from 400m up to the mile.

Semenya, along with other DSD athletes exceeding the approved testosterone levels, is barred from competing in female track events unless she undergoes testosterone-reducing treatment.

Semenya said in October last year she was turning her attention to “winning battles against the authorities” rather than collecting medals.

Semenya lodged an appeal against World Athletics’ rules at the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 2019, which resulted in her losing a significant case.

Following this, Semenya’s team sought to challenge the CAS ruling with another appeal, but Switzerland’s highest court dismissed it in September 2020.

This final decision by the Swiss court served as the foundation for an application filed by Semenya at the ECHR in 2021.

World Athletics has said its DSD regulations “are a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of protecting fair competition in the female category”.

No LGBTQ+ under my watch, matters not the consequences – A Bawumia vow to Ghanaians

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has made it clear that if elected President, he will not tolerate LGBTQ activities in the country, regardless of any consequences.

He emphasized that such activities go against the core values of the nation and cannot be condoned.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that both the Bible and the Quran, along with the Ghanaian people, do not endorse such practices.

During a meeting with the clergy in Tamale on Thursday, the Vice President said, “On this matter of LGBTQ, I want to say again unequivocally that we will not allow it in Ghana.

It is not going to be permitted. Our Bible says no, our Quran says no, and our people say no. So no. That is the answer.”

“No man will be marrying a man, no woman will be marrying a woman. It is not our value. And I will stand firm no matter the consequences.

“We will stand firm on that matter no matter the consequences. We will safeguard our country and we will safeguard our people.”

Bird flu outbreak: Affected farmer’s wife cries over compensation as family now survive on loans

Distressed wife of poultry farmer Charles Quaye, Mrs. Quaye revealed that they are now reliant on loans for survival due to delayed compensation from the government after their birds were destroyed due to an outbreak of Avian influenza (bird flu).

During an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mrs. Quaye shared that her husband has been involved in the poultry business for approximately 35 years, serving as their primary source of livelihood.

She expressed the challenging circumstances they face as parents responsible for providing for their three children amidst the current situation.

“My husband was a poultry farmer when I met him and that is what we have used to cater for our children. The eldest is in the university, with the others in SHS and JHS. It is not easy for us so we have to borrow.

“If the government has given the money to someone who has refused to pay, they should find out because we don’t understand what is going on. We have to take loans to make ends meet,” she bemoaned.

Aside the delayed compensation, Mrs Quaye said another worrying situation is the lack of a disinfection exercise.

“It was the hope that they will come and disinfect the farm to curb the spread but from 2022 till now, nobody has returned after the birds were destroyed,” she lamented.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) to compensate farmers affected by the outbreak within one month.

Despite this directive, the affected farmers report that they have yet to receive any compensation from the allocated GH¢1.8 million fund, as highlighted in the 2022 Auditor General’s Report, which remains untouched in the Ministry’s account.

  • FIFA’s five-pillar strategy to combat racism

FIFA’s five-pillar strategy to combat racism

FIFA has put forward a five-pillar plan aimed at addressing racist abuse in football.

The global governing body stated that it had engaged in an extensive consultation process with current and former players who are committed to instigating change.

One of the plan’s key suggestions involves implementing a standard crossed-hands gesture for players to signal racist incidents during matches.

This ‘Global Stand Against Racism’ proposal is set to be presented to FIFA’s 211 members at the annual congress in Bangkok on Thursday.

The first pillar of the proposal intends to make racism a specific offence which is included in all member associations’ disciplinary codes and has its own “specific and severe sanctions, including match forfeits”.

Fifa said it will “pause, suspend and abandon games in cases of racism”.

The crossed-hands gesture will be used by referees to signal an in-game procedure in which matches are paused twice and warnings are given, with the game to then be abandoned in the event of further racism.

In pillar three – ‘criminal charges’ – Fifa called for racism to be recognised as a criminal offence in every country, and said it would push for severe sanctions in the countries where it is already an offence.

Fifa also said it would promote education initiatives with schools and governments to “provide a future free of racism”, while an anti-racism panel made up of former players will be set up to review the progress of the proposal.

Earlier this year, Brazil and Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr said he felt “less and less like playing football because he had suffered repeated racist abuse.

Last year, a Fifa report found almost 20,000 abusive social media posts were aimed at players, coaches and officials during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

And in 2021, England manager Gareth Southgate called the racist abuse aimed at Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka after the Euro 2020 final “unforgivable”.
Why have Wolves called for a vote on VAR?

Wolves said VAR was introduced “in good faith” but has led to “numerous unintended negative consequences that are damaging the relationship between fans and football”.

The club is initiating discussions to evaluate the true sentiment towards VAR, rather than simply accepting the status quo during the summer break.

In the first half of the season, decisions against Manchester United, Luton, Sheffield United, Newcastle, and Fulham proved costly in terms of points.

A split decision by the Key Match Incident (KMI) panel occurred regarding Joao Gomes’ handball in the 1-1 draw against Luton, while it unanimously agreed that Sheffield United’s last-minute penalty winner should not have been awarded.

Additionally, Newcastle’s penalty should have been overturned, and during the November match against Fulham, there were disputes over two penalties awarded to the visitors and whether Carlos Vinicius should have been sent off. Despite these concerns, the panel concluded that the VAR decisions were correct.

At the time, O’Neil suggested that the club might need to escalate its concerns about VAR decisions.

Rooney says there’s no longer any enjoyment in the game thanks to VAR

Former England captain Wayne Rooney would support the removal of video assistant referees (VAR), as Premier League clubs prepare to vote on rejecting the technology.

The decision on whether to scrap VAR for the upcoming season will be made at the league’s annual general meeting next month. Wolves have officially put forward a resolution to trigger the vote during the meeting of the 20 member clubs in Harrogate on 6 June.

Rooney, speaking on Sky Sports, expressed his preference for football without VAR, echoing sentiments shared by many in the sport.

“I don’t like VAR and if it’s there and they get all the decisions right then fair enough but it’s taken all the enjoyment out of the game,” he told Sky Sports.

“If you’re a goalscorer and you score a goal you have to wait to celebrate and the fans are having to wait to celebrate. It’s wrong.

“You’re better off letting referees ref it and understand they will make mistakes. I’d much rather see the game without it.”

Former Manchester United and Newcastle forward Andy Cole also said the technology has failed to improve the game.

“It’s spoiled the game. There’s far too much controversy surrounding it,” he said on Sky Sports. “They said it was going to make the game better but it’s made the game worse. It’s taken a lot of entertainment out of the game – celebrating a goal.”

  • “Mudryk is not okay” – Pochettino

“Mudryk is not okay” – Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Mykhailo Mudryk “is not okay” after the Chelsea star was substituted due to a concussion during their match against Brighton.

Chelsea secured a 2-1 victory on Wednesday evening, thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku.

However, the triumph was marred by an injury to Ukrainian winger Mudryk just before halftime and a red card for captain Reece James with only two minutes left in regulation time.

Mudryk’s night ended early following a clash with Tariq Lamptey.

Despite receiving initial medical attention, he was unable to continue, and Chelsea used a concussion substitute to bring in Nkunku.

The concussion substitution rule allows both teams an extra substitution under these circumstances after consulting with the match referee and the club’s medical staff.

The rule also mandates a seven-day cooling-off period for the affected player, meaning Mudryk will miss the final Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.

In his post-match press conference, Pochettino confirmed Mudryk’s condition, stating that the player was not in good shape.

Pochettino stated: “No, he is not OK, we are checking. He was a little bit dizzy but we used the concussion substitution and the rule is seven days, so he is not going to be available for the next game, but I hope it is nothing wrong.”

Chelsea need just a single point from their final match of the season against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge to secure European football for next season.

This marks an impressive turnaround for the Blues, who have won four league games in a row after a dismal start to the season.

  • Mbappe’s arrival may cause a change in Jude Bellingham’s position at Real Madrid

Mbappe’s arrival may cause a change in Jude Bellingham’s position at Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham’s role at Real Madrid might be adjusted by Carlo Ancelotti to accommodate Kylian Mbappe in the attack, despite Bellingham’s impressive goal-scoring record.

The 20-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a stellar debut season, recording 23 goals and 12 assists in 40 appearances, playing a crucial role in Real Madrid’s La Liga triumph and their journey to the Champions League final.

However, with Mbappe’s imminent move from Paris Saint-Germain, Bellingham may need to adapt to a new position to make room for the French star, heralding a new era of Galacticos at the club.

According to Marca, Ancelotti is considering deploying Bellingham in a deeper midfield role.

Throughout the current season, the Italian manager has used Bellingham in various positions, often placing him on the left side or as a false nine, allowing him the freedom to roam in the final third.

This strategy has unlocked the English international’s goal-scoring abilities.

Ancelotti believes Bellingham can handle additional defensive responsibilities while maintaining his versatility as a total footballer.

The manager has a track record of convincing players to embrace new roles, such as Camavinga playing as a left-back and Tchouameni being deployed as a centre-back.

He is clear that Bellingham’s primary objective isn’t just to score goals. While his prolific form has helped Madrid cope superbly following Karim Benzema’s departure, Ancelotti envisions Bellingham transitioning to a more natural midfield role next season to meet the squad’s evolving needs.

Bellingham’s innate talent and versatility make him a valuable asset for Real Madrid. His quality in front of goal has been crucial in steering the team to success this season.

However, with Mbappe’s arrival, Ancelotti appears to want Bellingham to take on the role of a midfield general, dictating the tempo of the match. It remains to be seen how the 20-year-old will adapt to his new role in the upcoming campaign.

With the current campaign nearing its end, focus is shifting to the upcoming transfer window, where Chelsea is expected to see both arrivals and departures.

Presently, only four players are sidelined, marking the smallest injury list for the Blues since the season began.

However, the club has recently contended with significant injuries, including Romeo Lavia, who has played just once since his £55 million transfer, and Wesley Fofana, who has yet to appear this season since his 2022 arrival.

Pochettino is mindful of these challenges and aims to retain players at the club whenever possible.

Speaking on his summer plans, the Blues boss said: “Now is going to start a period where players want to leave, maybe some offers arrive or players that we want to add to the squad.

Of course, we have already started to work on this.
“In the case of Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku and Reece James. We need to pay attention in the way we need to provide them with a possibility to be fit.

Now it is not only a challenge to have them fit now, but in the way we manage for a whole season so there are no setbacks again.

Of course, in football you always need to take some risks but they have the quality to take some risks.
“[Fofana] is doing well, very positive, we were talking yesterday and hope he can be available to be part of the group.”

Chelsea have only two games remaining this season and are currently in seventh place, trailing Newcastle United on goal difference.

Their next match is against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday night, followed by a home game against Bournemouth on the final day of the weekend.

  • Chelsea set to receive a financial boost from Real Madrid for Eden Hazard even after retirement

Chelsea set to receive a financial boost from Real Madrid for Eden Hazard even after retirement

Chelsea are set to receive a financial windfall from Real Madrid due to the terms of Eden Hazard’s 2019 transfer.

Despite Hazard leaving Madrid last summer and subsequently retiring, the agreement continues to benefit Chelsea.

Real Madrid had agreed to a package worth up to £130 million when Hazard moved from Stamford Bridge.

Of this amount, £88 million was guaranteed, with an additional £42 million tied to various add-ons, some of which were not directly related to Hazard’s performance.

According to The Daily Telegraph, even though Hazard is no longer at Real Madrid, the club’s advancement to the Champions League final has triggered a £5 million add-on payment to Chelsea.

These add-ons remain valid because Hazard’s original five-year contract, signed in 2019, would have expired at the end of this season.

Hazard left Real Madrid by mutual consent last summer and retired a few months later.

Nevertheless, Madrid’s ongoing success continues to incur costs related to his transfer.

Chelsea clearly benefitted from the 2019 deal. They had signed Hazard for £32 million in 2012, and he delivered 110 goals in 352 appearances, helping the club secure six trophies, including two Premier League titles.

Selling Hazard at 28 yielded a substantial profit, particularly as he became one of modern football’s biggest transfer flops at Madrid due to persistent injuries.

For their significant investment, Real Madrid received only seven goals in 76 appearances from Hazard over four seasons. By contrast, he scored 21 goals in his final year at Chelsea alone.

This summer, the 33-year-old Hazard will return to Stamford Bridge as part of the Soccer Aid World XI, joining stars like Roberto Carlos, Diamond from the Gladiators reboot, and Tommy Fury.

  • Everyone must be gone except Fernandes – Wayne Rooney

Everyone must be gone except Fernandes – Wayne Rooney

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has said a “massive clearout” is needed at Old Trafford in the summer and added that he believes the team should be built around captain Bruno Fernandes.

United are eighth in the Premier League going into the final day of the season on Sunday and are at risk of missing out on European football altogether for next year.

Fernandes has been a standout performer this season and is United’s top scorer in the league with 10 goals and has registered more assists (7) than any other player at the club.

“You have to build around Bruno. He’s the one player with quality. He has got fight in him. I think you keep the young players and Bruno. I think it has to be a massive clearout, it has to be. It’s not going to be in one year but it’s got to be over the next couple of years,” Rooney said on Sky Sports on Wednesday.

“To compete in this league, they need better players and don’t get me wrong, these players are good players and Premier League players. But to compete with Manchester City, with Liverpool, with Arsenal they need better players.”

On Marcus Rashford, Rooney said: “We all know Marcus has got the capabilities to play at the top level. I just wonder if, for Marcus himself, is it time to go play elsewhere? I don’t know.

“I think he has to ask himself that question. I want him to stay, to break records at this club. But he needs to get his head right, get his head down and get back to the player we know he can be.”

“It wasn’t an easy season, but one thing remained constant, and it was the backing of you for the team,” Ten Hag said.

“The season is not over yet. Now, first we will travel to Brighton for three points and then we go to Wembley.

“And I promise you that those players will give everything, to get that cup, to win the cup, and bring it to Old Trafford.

“And be assured, you will be there supporting us. Thank you, you are the best supporters in the world, thank you.”

  • Ghana’s Tourism industry made 3.8bn dollars in 2023; a recovery from the pandemic?

Ghana’s Tourism industry made 3.8bn dollars in 2023; a recovery from the pandemic?

Ghana’s tourism industry has experienced a remarkable resurgence indicating a recovery from the dire impact suffered by the industry following the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief Director of the Ministry, John Yao Agbeko during a breakfast meeting at the GIPC Quarter Two CEOs 2024 Breakfast Meeting in Accra, revealed that the Ministry in 2023 generated a substantial $3.8 billion by the end of 2023 from international arrivals.

This marks a significant increase from the previous year’s $2.5 billion, signaling a robust recovery from the challenges posed by the pandemic.

He cited Ghana’s impressive recovery in international arrivals, with 914,882 visitors in 2022 and 1,148,002 in 2023, resulting in significant receipts of $2.5 billion and $3.8 billion, respectively.

The Ministry has pledged to foster an enabling environment for sustainable growth and development in tourism, arts, and culture given the critical contribution of the sector to Ghana’s GDP

“In Africa, the tourism industry showed considerable strength in coping with 75% of each pandemic receipt. Ghana, however, recovered a total international arrival of nine hundred and fourteen thousand, eight hundred and eighty-two in 2022 and One million, one hundred and forty-eight thousand and two in 2023 giving a receipt of $2.5 billion and $3.8 billion respectively.

These are just the international arrivals. The Ministry of Tourism exists to create a conducive environment for sustainable growth and development of Tourism, Arts, and Culture to contribute enormously to GDP through effective and efficient use of appropriate policies, plans, programmes and projects” he noted.

Deputy Finance Minister , Dr. Stephen Amoah has called on stakeholders within the tourism sector to give precedence to domestic tourism as a means to stabilize the depreciating cedi.

He underscored the importance of implementing home-grown policy measures tailored to address Ghana’s unique requirements, urging both patrons and industry players to contribute to local economic development.

“One thing I’ve seen about Africa is that we have a lot of ideas but sometimes the global modules control us too much. We need to build home-grown policy tools that specifically address our needs.

“Let’s begin to show the high level of patronage and keep the money here. I think as a country we have everything at our disposal to develop tourism because God has endowed us” he added.

  • Jurors declare nationwide strike over 10 months unpaid allowances

Jurors declare nationwide strike over 10 months unpaid allowances

Jurors nationwide have declared an indefinite strike, effective immediately, due to the non-payment of their allowances.

Their decision has been necessitated by 10 months unpaid allowance by the government (dating back to February 2023, along with unpaid allowances from July 2023 to May 2024).

In a statement, the jurors highlighted the significant financial burden they have faced due to the lack of these payments.

“This situation has made it practically impossible for us to continue to pre-finance our transportation to and from the court premises,” portions of the statement read.

The jurors also highlighted that despite their commitment to the justice system, the lack of financial support has left them with no choice but to halt their duties.

The jurors noted that while they were promised payment in May, follow-ups revealed that no funds are currently available.

The ten-month backlog of unpaid allowances has significantly strained their personal finances, compelling them to take this drastic step.

“We regret any inconvenience our absence may have on the expeditious delivery of justice,” the jurors added, acknowledging the potential impact on court proceedings.

Their absence is expected to cause delays and disruptions in the judicial process, affecting the timely delivery of justice.

  • Contract extension at 40 – Al-Nassr ready for Cristiano Ronaldo

Contract extension at 40 – Al-Nassr ready for Cristiano Ronaldo

Reports suggest that Cristiano Ronaldo is prepared to extend his contract with Al-Nassr, a move that would see him continue playing well into his 40s.

Despite nearing 40, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner shows no signs of slowing down, having scored an impressive 48 goals in 47 appearances this season alone. Since joining the Middle Eastern club, Ronaldo has amassed a total of 62 goals in 66 games across all competitions.

Ronaldo is set to reach the milestone of 40 years old in February 2025, with his current contract expiring next summer. He currently enjoys the most lucrative terms in world football, having joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr as a free agent following his departure from Premier League giants Manchester United.

Al-Nassr are understandably keen to keep Ronaldo’s ability and marketing appeal on their books as they look to make more big signings this summer, with Ben Jacobs telling talkSPORT: “2025 is a really key year in Saudi Arabia for two reasons.

One, because Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract expires, although my understanding is that he may renew for one year.

And two, the television rights are up for renewal and, as you can imagine, in Egypt with Mohamed Salah and Portugal with Ronaldo and/or Bruno Fernandes, there could well be big audiences and lucrative renewals to be had.

Depending on if Ronaldo stays, if Fernandes joins and if Salah arrives, and as a consequence, the next 12 months are all about planning who is going to resonate with the international audience. I am told that the Saudi dealmakers want another marquee star from Portugal because they have built up an audience through Ronaldo.

If Fernandes comes in 2025 or, potentially but less likely, 2024 then that is a continuation which means maybe you retain that audience and cash in on that audience when the renewal comes up in 12 months time.”

There are rumors circulating about Portuguese playmaker Fernandes potentially leaving Manchester United, with Bayern Munich also expressing interest in acquiring him.

Meanwhile, Egypt international Salah is nearing the end of his contract with Liverpool, raising the possibility that he may need to be sold during the upcoming transfer window.

  • LGBTQ+ declared mental sickness in Peru

LGBTQ+ declared mental sickness in Peru

Peru has officially classifies transgender, nonbinary, intersex people as ‘mentally ill’.

The decision has sparked widespread criticism within the country. Previously, lawmakers had prohibited any mention of gender equality in school textbooks.

This has had dire consequences for educational programs aimed at combating domestic violence and femicides.

César Vásquez, the health minister, has refrained from addressing the controversy. However, he has come to the defense of President Dina Boluarte regarding the declaration.

The president herself is currently under scrutiny for her questionable acquisition of expensive jewelry, including a £40,000 diamond-encrusted Cartier bracelet.

In a separate incident, her brother Nicanor Boluarte was apprehended for selling high-ranking government positions.

In response, the president disbanded an elite police anti-corruption unit and attempted, unsuccessfully, to prevent the release of official statistics revealing an increase in poverty rates.

Percy Mayta-Tristán, a medical researcher at Lima’s Scientific University of the South, suggested that while the decree may have been well-intended, it demonstrated a lack of understanding of the intricacies surrounding LGBT issues.

“You can’t ignore the context that this is happening in a super-conservative society, where the LGBT community has no rights and where labelling them as mentally ill opens the door to conversion therapy,” he said.

Clean sheet for Joseph Wollacott as Hibernian thrash Motherwell 3-0

Joseph Wollacott showcased his prowess as Hibernian secured an impressive 3-0 victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday.

The Ghanaian goalkeeper, representing the Black Stars, started in goal for Hibernian in their Week 37 fixture in Scotland’s top football division.

Wollacott proved pivotal between the posts, making several crucial saves and preserving a clean sheet by the end of the match.

Hibernian took control of the game early on, establishing a 2-0 lead by halftime through goals from Myziane Maolida and Martin Boyle.

In the second half, Martin Boyle added another goal to his tally, securing a brace and sealing a significant win for Hibernian over Motherwell.

Wollacott’s standout performance in today’s game comes at an opportune time, just before the June international break.

Laryea Kingston want ‘praise’ from Ghanaians for win over Ivory Coast

Coach of the Black Starlets, Laryea Kingston, is urging Ghanaians to savor the team’s impressive 5-1 triumph over Ivory Coast in the opening match of the WAFU B U17 Cup of Nations.

The Ghana U17 side secured a commanding victory with goals from Joseph Narbi (2), Godfred Sarpong, Harve Gbafa, and Mark Kagawa Mensah.

Following the match, Coach Kingston acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by the Ivorian team, recognizing their quality.

Despite the convincing victory, he highlighted the challenges his team faced during the game.

“It’s a cause for celebration. We must take pleasure in it. The game was challenging. The Ivorians are a tough team. They complicated things for us. It was hard to control the game due to their playing style.

I’m thrilled. Now it’s time for Ghanaians to celebrate because it’s a significant win against a strong team,” Coach Laryea Kingston commented.

With this win under their belt, the Black Starlets now turn their focus to their upcoming clash against Benin in the WAFU B U17 Cup of Nations.

This triumph sets Ghana on course to potentially return to the U17 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament they last featured in back in 2017.

  • This Reece James tackle landed him a straight red card in Chelsea-Brighton clash

This Reece James tackle landed him a straight red card in Chelsea-Brighton clash

Chelsea’s captain, Reece James, who has been grappling with injuries throughout the season, made headlines by setting a somewhat bizarre record when he was shown a red card in the match against Brighton on Wednesday.

James, who has struggled with hamstring issues, limiting him to only 10 Premier League appearances this season, entered the game as a substitute against Brighton.

However, his return to the pitch was short-lived as he was sent off for kicking out at striker Joao Pedro following a foul. The referee promptly brandished a straight red card after a VAR review.

With this red card, James now shares the distinction of having the most red cards in the Premier League this season.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the fact that he has played only 422 minutes, equivalent to less than five full games.

Two other players, Yves Bissouma of Tottenham and Oli McBurnie of Sheffield United, have also received two red cards each this season.

Additionally, James is not the sole Chelsea player to be sent off; Conor Gallagher and Malo Gusto have also been shown red cards.

As a consequence of his suspension, James will miss Chelsea’s final game of the season against Bournemouth on Sunday, with the possibility of the ban extending into the next season.

Currently placed sixth in the league, Chelsea could climb to fifth if they defeat Bournemouth, but this depends on Sheffield United defeating Ange Postecoglou’s side.

  • Premier League clubs to vote on removing VAR

Premier League clubs to vote on removing VAR

Premier League clubs will vote on whether to scrap video assistant referees (VAR) from next season at their annual general meeting next month.

Wolves have formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League which will trigger a vote when the 20 member clubs meet in Harrogate on 6 June.

The club said VAR was introduced “in good faith” but has led to “numerous unintended negative consequences that are damaging the relationship between fans and football”.

VAR was introduced in 2019 to help support on-field officials with key match decisions, but there have been a number of controversial incidents involving the technology this season.

“The price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game,” read a Wolves statement.

The Premier League said it “acknowledged the concerns” about VAR but “fully supports” the technology and will continue to work with referees’ body PGMOL to make improvements.

Any alterations to the rules require a two-thirds majority, meaning at least 14 of the 20 clubs must vote in favor.

Premier League clubs have already endorsed the implementation of semi-automated offside technology for the 2024-25 season.

  • Joe Ghartey praises Akufo-Addo for establishing 3 new fire stations since assuming office

Joe Ghartey praises Akufo-Addo for establishing 3 new fire stations since assuming office

Member of Parliament (MP) for the Essikado-Ketan Constituency in the Western Region, Joe Ghartey, has praised the development of fire training schools in Ghana under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration as remarkable.

He noted that since independence, Ghana had only one fire training school until President Akufo-Addo took office in 2017.

“Since assuming office, President Akufo-Addo has overseen the establishment of three more fire training schools, and the government is about to start a fourth one,” he said.

Joe Ghartey made these remarks at the celebration of International Firefighters’ Day on May 3, 2024, in the Western Region.

The Firefighters’ Day celebration took place at the Western Regional headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service in Fijai.

He informed the gathering that “plans are far advanced to acquire land for the establishment of a specialized training facility for the Fire Service at Essikado.”

“These developments are remarkable and represent a quantum leap in the provision of training infrastructure for the Ghana National Fire Service.”

Joe Ghartey emphasized that this achievement is yet another reason for Ghanaians to appreciate the NPP administration and vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He highlighted that from 1957 to 2017, Ghana had only one fire training school.

However, in the past eight years, three additional schools have been established, with a fourth soon to be inaugurated.

  • NIB now a centre for NPP foot soldiers – Minority alleges

NIB now a centre for NPP foot soldiers – Minority alleges

Minority in Parliament has raised concerns about the government’s management of the National Investment Bank (NIB), alleging that it has turned into a platform primarily for members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Their apprehension arises from the recent appointment of Tweneboa Kodua Fokuo, the current NPP parliamentary candidate for Manso Nkwanta, as the Managing Director of the NIB.

Adding to their worries, the caucus pointed out that the situation is exacerbated by the appointment of a politically-active individual, who had previously contested for the Fomena Member of Parliament seat, as the bank’s deputy Managing Director.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Wednesday, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, expressed reservations about such developments, emphasizing the potential implications for the bank’s operations and impartiality.

“President Akufo-Addo is destroying the governance of our country. In the sense that even banks, a typical example like the NIB has been turned into a hub where they harbour foot soldiers of the party.

You have a bank that is struggling, a bank that is almost collapsed, a bank that we know that the governance structure regime is extremely poor but we all want to nurture the bank because obviously it is a state bank.

“This president in spite of all the problems of the NIB has decided to appoint a PC, someone who is going to contest the election in six months, as the MD of the state bank, NIB.

And I am surprised at the governor – Governor Addison the printer, also had the temerity to approve such a person to become the MD of the NIB.

“The deputy of the same politically exposed person, who is now the MD of the NIB, is also another politically exposed person,” he stated.

Tweneboah Kodua Fokuo has assured that he is capable of effectively managing both roles without conflict.

As the newly appointed Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB) and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Manso Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region, Fokuo emphasized his ability to balance responsibilities.

Having previously served as the Deputy MD of the bank, he expressed confidence in his time management skills and affirmed that neither role would hinder his performance in the other.

  • 65 registered professional bodies given till June 30 to be deregistered for non-compliance – ORC

65 registered professional bodies given till June 30 to be deregistered for non-compliance – ORC

Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has announced that it has commenced legal proceedings to deregister 65 registered Professional Bodies (PBs) for their failure to submit annual accounts and update their Certificate of Membership.

A professional body is an officially registered institution or group comprising trained and qualified members in a recognized profession.

According to a statement released by the ORC and reported by GhanaWeb Business, this action is deemed necessary due to non-compliance with Section 16 of the Professional Bodies Registration Act, 1973, NRCD 143, with the Registrar of Professional Bodies.

The ORC has set a deadline of June 30, 2024, for addressing this issue.

“After meeting with the Executive Council Members of all registered Professional Bodies, the Registrar of Companies (ROC), who oversees Professional Bodies, instructed those in default for more than two years and had not updated their members’ certification to do so by the end of December 2023, or risk removal from the Professional Bodies Register as per section 11(b) of the Professional Bodies Act 1973 (NRCD 143),” the ORC explained.

The Office further highlighted that among the 91 Professional Bodies, 65 have neglected to adhere to the directive to renew both their certificates and those of their members.

As a result, they have been identified as defaulters.

“However, Professional Bodies in default can still maintain good standing by submitting their Annual Accounts by June 30, 2024, the deadline for Annual Returns to the Registrar of Professional Bodies,” the statement emphasized.

“The filing should include a copy of the Audited Accounts of the Body, an updated list of its Members, and any changes made to its Constitution before the removal of defaulters from the Register, which begins at the end of June 2024 in accordance with section 15 (1)(2) and 16(1)(2),” it added.

The ORC stated that it will continue to conduct extensive awareness campaigns and public education on the importance of registered Professional Bodies being in compliance with the Office of the Registrar of Companies.

  • Woman burns to death after her mentally unstable sons sets house ablaze

Woman burns to death after her mentally unstable sons sets house ablaze

Two siblings, believed to be mentally unstable, are currently in police custody after allegedly setting fire to their house in Abuakwa Manhyia, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti region.

Tragically, their actions resulted in the death of their mother.

According to the Assembly Member for the area, the brothers had a confrontation with their grandmother, who also resides in the house, and threatened to set her ablaze.

Fearing for her safety, the grandmother promptly reported the threat to the police and evacuated the premises.

During her absence, the siblings set the house on fire, unaware that their sick mother was still inside, leading to her untimely demise.

The fire engulfed the entire house before firefighters could extinguish it, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. The victim’s charred remains have been transported to the morgue as investigations into the incident continue.

Recounting the harrowing ordeal to Citi News, Evans Opoku, the Assembly Member for the Abuakwa-Manhyia Electoral Area, described the incident as intentional, stating, “It was intentional, he was trying to burn the house and he wanted to kill his grandmother but the grandmother rushed to the police station to report the guy that the guy has threatened to kill her.”

“So, what he was doing was to burn the house and the grandmother too. Not knowing that the grandmother had left. So, before they realised someone was burnt it was the guy’s mother.

“They were two so the police arrested them. The police said that the two people caused the incident, so they arrested them yesterday.”
