Man Utd consider ex coach as replacement for Erik ten Hag – Reports

Man Utd are reportedly eyeing Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag, amidst uncertainty surrounding Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag’s tenure has been marred by a disappointing 2023/24 season, raising concerns about United’s Premier League finish.

Names like Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank have surfaced as potential successors to Ten Hag. Now, reports suggest that McKenna has emerged as a new candidate for the role.

Foot Mercato initially reported that United held discussions with McKenna’s agent, a claim subsequently confirmed by The Guardian.

However, United face competition as McKenna’s services attract interest from other Premier League clubs. Moreover, McKenna might opt to stay at Ipswich.

McKenna has a history with Manchester United, having served as a scout and Under-18s manager before becoming an assistant to Jose Mourinho.

He played a crucial role in the coaching setup under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, alongside Michael Carrick.

After departing United in December 2021, McKenna took over as Ipswich manager. Despite initial struggles in League One, he guided Ipswich to promotion in the 2022/23 season.

Expectations were modest for Ipswich in the Championship, but McKenna led them to an astonishing promotion, finishing as runners-up and securing 96 points, surpassing Leeds United on the final day of the season.

Africa trails behind global standard in mobile adoption, innovation despite gains – MTN CEO

CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, emphasized that despite progress in digital technology across Africa, the continent still lags behind the global standard in mobile adoption and innovation.

He identified challenges such as limited infrastructure coverage, high costs of data and smartphones, and a lack of digital skills training as barriers to internet access, particularly for vulnerable groups like women.

Blewett made these remarks during the opening of the ongoing 3i Africa Summit at the Accra International Conference Center.

The summit, themed ‘Unleashing Africa’s FinTech and Digital Economic Potential,’ aims to foster collaboration among stakeholders to drive innovation throughout Africa.

It is a collaborative effort by the Bank of Ghana, Development Bank of Ghana, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

The 3i Africa Summit serves as a platform to showcase and stimulate Africa’s FinTech and digital potential, with a focus on transforming the continent’s economic landscape through sustainable capital allocation.

Blewett emphasized the significance of the African fintech ecosystem in propelling a digital revolution in his address.

He said, “Africa’s fintech ecosystem is the engine that will drive its digital revolution and economic development in the coming years.

Fintech can stimulate local economies and drive progress across the continent in several ways – financial inclusion, innovation and entrepreneurship, job creation, cross-border transactions and payments, digital identity and security, agriculture and rural development, government services, investment, and funding, as well as digital and financial literacy.

The success of services like MTN’s Mobile Money and Vodafone and Safaricom’s M-pesa provide sufficient evidence of the ability of fintech to revolutionize business on the continent and provide millions of people with access to essential financial services.”

He added, “Despite these gains, Africa lags far behind the world in mobile adoption and innovation. Constraints such as low infrastructure coverage, affordability of data and smartphones, and lack of digital skills training continue to inhibit access to the Internet among vulnerable groups, especially women.

We must therefore make every effort to remove these bottlenecks and close the usage gap by improving data coverage and lowering the cost of data and data-enabled devices especially in rural and low-income areas and enhance digital literacy.”

Stephen Blewett also addressed the topic of sustainability, urging business leaders and policymakers to prioritize the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices into their commercial endeavors. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a focus on sustainability in all aspects of business operations.

“We must not lose sight of the impact that our actions have on our environment and society and strive towards creating shared value in business outcomes. We must progressively reduce our carbon footprints by investing in renewable energy, and other energy-efficient tools and technologies that lead to efficiency.

We must take up the challenge of placing Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) at the heart of our commercial activities and support the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. I believe that together, we can shape an Africa that not only thrives in the digital age but also serves as a shining example of inclusive and sustainable development.”

Additional speakers from MTN include Shaibu Haruna, CEO of Mobile Money Limited Ghana, and Eli Hini, CEO of MoMo PSB in Nigeria. Also present are Cedric Nguessan, representing MTN Group Finco Payments and E-Commerce, Angela Mensah-Poku, Chief Enterprise Business Officer for MTN Ghana, and Dario Bianchi, Chief Digital Officer at MTN Ghana.

Kumasi Central Market traders threaten to move into uncompleted market space

Traders at Kumasi Central Market have threatened to relocate their goods and commodities to the unfinished market site if the construction firm does not remove all barricades by Sunday, May 19, 2024.

This ultimatum is a response to what the traders describe as prolonged delays in completing the market’s second phase.

In a petition dated May 14, 2024, they expressed their frustration with the Akufo-Addo administration, citing negligence and failure to complete the project, which has negatively impacted their businesses due to unsuitable conditions.

The project has been stalled for over a year and a half because of the renegotiation of a loan agreement following Ghana’s decision to seek a financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The traders accused the government of ignoring their pleas and failing to meet completion deadlines.

To press their demands, the traders have planned a five-day continuous demonstration to advocate for the resumption of work on the project.

They have given Contracta Construction Company Limited a seven-day ultimatum to remove all barricades around the site or face the consequences of their occupation.

Additionally, the traders are in discussions with the Ghana Police Service to secure permission for their demonstration, in accordance with Article 21(1d) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

Mahama pledges to use Artificial Intelligence to fight galamsey

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has revealed plans to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to combat illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey.’

He made this announcement at the ‘3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining,’ organized by the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani.

Galamsey has become a significant challenge for the government, with many Ghanaians expressing concern over its devastating impact.

Addressing the gathering, the former President emphasized the need for technological innovation to improve the monitoring of the small-scale mining sector and mitigate its environmental effects.

“We will introduce and encourage technological innovation to improve capacity for coordinated monitoring of the small-scale mining sector and reduce environmental impact,” he said on Wednesday, May 15.

He proposed the utilisation of AI to identify small-scale mining and galamsey activities, monitor excavators, and establish geo-fences around concessions to prevent mining operations in unauthorised areas, including water bodies.

“This will include using AI to locate all small-scale mining and galamsey operations, track excavators, and geo-fence all concessions to ensure mining operations are not conducted in unapproved areas, including water bodies.”

This initiative, he says, aims to strengthen coordinated efforts in monitoring and regulating mining activities, thereby promoting sustainable mining practices and environmental conservation.

  • Be meticulous, don’t mess up the figures – African Electoral Institute tells EC

Be meticulous, don’t mess up the figures – African Electoral Institute tells EC

African Electoral Institute (AEI) is urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to exercise diligence in collating and publishing data to prevent the dissemination of inaccurate and erroneous information during the ongoing Limited Voter Registration Exercise.

In a statement dated May 14, 2024, the AEI highlighted instances where the EC previously released incorrect figures from the Limited Voter Registration Exercise, which later had to be corrected.

“From African Electoral Institute’s (AEI) Research Desk, the number of registered voters for Day 2 was 19,267 registrants as has been published by the EC, however, the EC published the summation of all the regional figures as 25,287 instead of 19,267. Similarly, the number of voters registered on Day 3 was reported by the EC to be 48,616, instead of 43,417,” part of the statement read.

The AEI believes that the EC is a human institution and as such is prone to errors, therefore, the group advised the election organising body to ensure strict quality control and should not be in a hurry to announce figures.

“African Electoral Institute acknowledges the fact that the EC is a human institution and thereby admonishes the EC to be meticulous and diligent in the compilation of their figures. The EC may have to adopt strict quality control measures to prevent such blunders, because if it must be done, it must be done well.

“The African Electoral Institute believes that there is no need by the EC to be in such a hurry to publish figures as they are not in competition with any other institution to be the first to publish the collated registration results.

“Therefore, a few hours of delay to ensure that the collated figures are accurate will not hurt anyone and would go a long way in preventing avoidable mistakes and subsequent corrections, which impact negatively on the reputation of the Commission,” it added.

The Limited Voter Registration Exercise started on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, and will end on May 27, 2024.

Below is the full statement by the African Electoral Institute

    PRESS RELEASE

    TO: ALL MEDIA HOUSES

    DATE: 14TH MAY,2024

AFRICAN ELECTORAL INSTITUTE (AEI) IMPLORES THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION (EC) TO BE METICULOUS AND DILIGENT TO AVOID ERRONEOUS AND INACCURATE FIGURES TO THE PUBLIC

African Electoral Institute (AEI) beseech the Electoral Commission (EC) to be diligent and meticulous in its data collation and publication of same to the general public.

The AEI has cited figures that are statistically inaccurate from the EC and subsequently changed by the EC to reflect the accurate figures in the on-going Limited Voter Registration Exercise.

From African Electoral Institute’s (AEI) Research Desk, the number of registered voters for Day 2 was 19,267 registrants as has been published by the EC, however, the EC published the summation of all the regional figures as 25,287 instead of 19,267.

Similarly, the number of voters registered on Day 3 was reported by the EC to be 48,616, instead of 43,417.

The Institute has also observed the banter between the two major political parties on these changes of figures by the EC on major news media.

African Electoral Institute acknowledges the fact that the EC is a human institution and thereby admonishes the EC to be meticulous and diligent in the compilation of their figures. The EC may have to adopt strict quality control measures to prevent such blunders, because if it must be done, it must be done well.

The African Electoral Institute believes that there is no need by the EC to be in such a hurry to publish figures as they are not in competition with any other institution to be the first to publish the collated registration results. Therefore, a few hours of delay to ensure that the collated figures are accurate will not hurt anyone and would go a long way in preventing avoidable mistakes and subsequent corrections, which impact negatively on the reputation of the Commission.

African Electoral Institute urges the EC to continue to work with the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to deliver a credible election and to instill confidence in its operations by the Ghanaian voter.

Messi to sit out in Orlando City rivalry game over injury

Lionel Messi is set to miss the Florida derby as the Inter Miami star has been ruled out of action against Orlando City.

According to The Athletic, the Argentine will not travel with the Inter Miami squad to Orlando due to a knee injury sustained during the club’s 3-2 win over CF Montreal last week.

Until now, the World Cup-winning captain has missed four games for Inter Miami this season, all in March.

During that period, the David Beckham-owned team struggled, losing twice, drawing once, and securing just one win.

Despite his absence, Messi has been in exceptional form in his second MLS season, scoring 10 goals and providing 12 assists in nine league appearances.

He set an MLS record on May 5 against the New York Red Bulls, becoming the first player to notch five assists in a regular-season game.

After Thursday’s match against Orlando City, Gerardo Martino’s side will face DC United in an MLS clash on May 19.

  • Inaugural Women’s Club World Cup to begin in 2026 – FIFA confirms

Inaugural Women’s Club World Cup to begin in 2026 – FIFA confirms

FIFA has officially announced that the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup will take place in January and February 2026.

This landmark decision marks a significant step forward in the development and recognition of women’s club football globally.

The 16-team tournament will be held every four years, strategically scheduled during the domestic season for European leagues, fitting between the Women’s Champions League group stages and knockout rounds. The timing, set for January and February, aligns well with the global football calendar.

For example, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season in the USA typically begins in March, ensuring no conflict with the start of their domestic season.

The inaugural Women’s Club World Cup aims to become a pinnacle event in women’s football, providing a platform for the best clubs worldwide to compete at the highest level.

Among the teams expected to participate are Barcelona, the current European champions, NY Gotham FC, the reigning NWSL champions, and Corinthians, the holders of the Copa Libertadores Femenina.

FIFA first announced its intention to create a global women’s club competition in December 2022. These plans were confirmed during the FIFA Congress held on Wednesday in Bangkok. This congress was a pivotal moment for women’s football, as it also saw the approval of a new international match calendar from 2026 to 2029.

The new calendar aims to provide players with more opportunities for rest and recovery by reducing the number of international breaks from six to five, thereby enhancing player welfare and performance.

In addition to the women’s tournament, FIFA has announced an expanded men’s Club World Cup, to be staged every four years, with the first edition scheduled for next summer.

This expansion reflects FIFA’s broader strategy to increase the visibility and competitiveness of club football worldwide, across both men’s and women’s games. Manchester City are the reigning champions of the FIFA Men’s Club World Cup.

You can’t take title from coach who dey train plus evil spirits – X user reacts to Pep’s training video

Spurs gave Man City a tough run during their clash in race for the Premier League title.

One of the highlights of the game was Man City’s coach, Pep Guardiola’s reaction to Tottenham’s Son Heung-min’s near goal.

The incident occured when Manchester City was leading 1-0.

A slip by Manuel Akanji granted Son Heung-min a clear path towards the goal, presenting Tottenham with a chance to equalise the score.

Guardiola’s reaction to the tense moment was strikingly dramatic; he dropped to his knees and then lay on his back as Son made a dash towards the goal. This scene was captured and quickly went viral on social media.

Amidst the moment, a Twitter user named @joe_cavani2 shared a tweet featuring a video of Pep on the training grounds, where he appeared to be gesturing as if he were training with others, despite being alone in the footage.

His caption was “Coach he dey train plus evil Spirits you want take league from am”

  • FIFA aims to pave the way for La Liga, Premier League matches in the US

FIFA aims to pave the way for La Liga, Premier League matches in the US

FIFA is moving towards ending decades of football tradition by reviewing the rules that prevent domestic league games from being played in other countries.

However, fans may object to their teams’ home matches potentially being moved thousands of miles away.

The United States and Saudi Arabia are expected to be interested in hosting competitive games from top European leagues.

FIFA recently agreed to withdraw from an ongoing court case in New York, filed by promoter Relevent, which challenged the current policy.

In April, Spanish league president Javier Tebas expressed hope that La Liga would soon be able to play games overseas.

“I don’t know when, but this time LaLiga will play official games abroad. I think it could be from the 2025–26 season,” Tebas told Expansión.

“An official game in the United States would strengthen our position in the North American market, which is the second [biggest] for La Liga after Spain.

“Other really competitive leagues are coming, so we can’t always do the same thing. They would jump ahead of us.”

The new FIFA policy is likely to appeal to the growing number of international owners of European clubs, including the wave of U.S. investors in the English Premier League, Italy’s Serie A, and France’s Ligue 1, as well as state-backed teams like Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City, Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain, and Saudi-owned Newcastle United.

FIFA is forming a panel of 10-15 representatives from various football stakeholders to advise on amending the rules regarding “out-of-territory” games within the next few months.

These rules were last updated in 2014.

Previous attempts to hold European League games abroad, such as taking Barcelona to Miami in 2019, were blocked. U.S. promoters are seeking to offer fans more than just preseason exhibition games featuring the world’s best club teams.

FIFA directed its working group, which is yet to be appointed, to consider fairness and give “advance notice to fans who may miss the opportunity to attend a home or away match in the home territory.”

Other factors for the FIFA panel include “respect for the recognised structure of international football” and potential disruption to fans, teams and leagues in the country hosting “out-of-territory” games.

Simons, Guido on Barcelona’s radar – Sources

Barcelona are considering moves for Guido Rodríguez and Xavi Simons, but final decisions on any signings depend on their summer budget, sources have told ESPN.

Rodríguez, 30, will be available as a free agent this summer after his contract with Real Betis expires.

Barça are eager to strengthen their midfield, with coach Xavi Hernández attributing this season’s struggles to a lack of balance in the middle of the pitch.

Xavi’s priority is to add a defensive midfielder in addition to Rodríguez.

There is also interest in Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich and Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi, although both would require a significant fee.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has also been linked.

Simons, 21, has spent this season on loan at RB Leipzig and is set to return to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

However, the Netherlands international, an attacking midfielder who came through Barça’s academy before moving to PSG in 2019, could be available for another loan spell next season.

Chelsea and Arsenal are among several European clubs considering a move for RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Šeško, according to TEAMtalk.

The 20-year-old has been identified by Chelsea as a potential alternative to Napoli star Victor Osimhen, with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy looking to reinforce their forward line in the upcoming transfer window.

Arsenal are also reportedly in the race for Šeško, with a meeting planned soon to discuss terms with the Bundesliga club. Manager Mikel Arteta has Šeško on his shortlist, especially with both Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah potentially leaving the Emirates Stadium.

Additionally, Arsenal are considering Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee as another option.

Šeško, who scored in his sixth consecutive game during Saturday’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Werder Bremen, is under contract with RB Leipzig until the summer of 2028.

However, a release clause in his contract allows him to be signed for €65 million.

Nelson Mandela prophesied the outcome of Ghana-Uruguay game at 2010 World Cup

The late South African icon, Nelson Mandela, reportedly made a prophetic statement about the outcome of Ghana’s match against Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup, hosted by South Africa.

Lee Addy, a former defender for the Black Stars, revealed that the team had an audience with Mandela before the quarter-final clash with Uruguay.

During this meeting, Mandela cautioned that the team would face unfair treatment from the referee, as Addy recounted to sports journalist Ernest Brew Smith.

This prediction came true in a memorable quarter-final. Asamoah Gyan missed a pivotal penalty following Luis Suarez’s infamous handball, leading to a penalty shootout that Ghana lost 4-2.

Additionally, Addy shared insights into a conversation with Ghana’s late president, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, before their match against the United States.

Professor Mills visited the team to boost their morale, emphasising the historical significance of the match and the importance of securing a win, reinforcing Ghana’s historical advantage over the US team.

“Professor Mills came to our locker room to inspire us. He urged us to aim for victory, reminding us of Ghana’s historical upper hand against the US.

He was confident that history was on our side and encouraged us to pursue a win. His support for our quest was unwavering,” Addy recalled.

In a tragic turn of events, Nigerian boxer Sherif Lawal has passed away following a knockout in his debut professional fight.

Representing the UK, Lawal entered the ring for his first professional match on Sunday, May 11, 2024, against Portuguese contender Malam Varela at the Harrow Leisure Centre.

The 29-year-old boxer’s bout lasted until the sixth round, despite being knocked down in the fourth. A critical punch in the sixth round caused him to fall face-first, prompting immediate medical intervention.

Although he was swiftly transported to the hospital by ambulance, Lawal was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.

Warren Boxing Management, the promoters of the fight, expressed their deep regret: “Unfortunately, during Sherif’s fight, he collapsed and despite the best efforts of the paramedics, he was later pronounced dead.”

Jonathan Tetteh threatened to stab me in camp – Samuel Takyi

Ghana’s Olympic bronze medalist, Samuel Takyi, recently disclosed his decision to depart from Ghana’s amateur boxing team, citing safety concerns as a key factor in his departure.

Takyi, who announced his intention to transition to professional boxing on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, expressed discomfort with the atmosphere within the team.

He revealed that upon his return to the Black Bombers, he encountered hostility from certain individuals, leading to a sense of unease during training camps.

Takyi further elaborated that his inability to secure a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris was partially influenced by alleged threats of violence directed towards him by a teammate, Jonathan Tetteh.

These threats contributed to his decision to pursue a career outside of Ghana’s amateur boxing scene.

“A lot happened when I went to Italy, and I think I have some explanations to do because it was a result of these issues that I believe affected my quest to qualify for the Olympic Games,” Samuel Takyi said.

“When I returned to the team, there was an issue that occurred, and someone on the team threatened to stab me,” the boxer narrated on Happy 98.9 FM.

“This issue happened when we were preparing to go to Italy. I had a friend record my training, and this teammate asked him to stop. So we had a standoff, and he threatened to stab me. This same guy, Jonathan Tetteh, accused Coach Asare of selling his fight in Italy.

“Since that day, I became extra careful whenever I was in camp,” Samuel Takyi said.

Samuel Takyi became the third Ghanaian in history to win a bronze medal in boxing at the Olympic Games held in Tokyo in 2020.

  • Fuel prices to begin to fall from May 16 – IES projects

The Institute for Energy Security has predicted a slight decrease in fuel prices starting May 16, 2024.

This reduction has been attributed to the decline in prices of refined petroleum products on the international market, which outweighs the impact of cedi depreciation.

“Following the changes recorded on the international market for refined petroleum products, Gasoline [petrol], Gasoil [diesel] and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) recorded a fall of about 5.68%, 4.51% and 4.72%, respectively.”

“In the second pricing-window for May 2024, ex-pump is expected to fall given the reductions recorded for refined petroleum products on the international market, which is wider than Ghana cedi depreciation,” IES stated.

The Global Standard & Poor (S&P) Platts tracking of petroleum products performance on the world fuel market has shown a significant fall in prices for petrol, diesel, and LPG.

Specifically, the price of petrol has decreased by 5.68%, diesel by 4.51%, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas by 4.72%.
Comparative analysis of the data indicates a notable decline in the prices of all petroleum products on the world fuel market.

In the local fuel market, the first pricing window for May 2024 saw marginal increments in the price of some petroleum products.

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) computation of petroleum products for May 2024 showed petrol and diesel selling at GH¢14.22 and GH¢14.00 per litre respectively, while LPG was priced at GH¢15.05 per kilogramme.

  • Chief Justice has the right to make changes on Opuni’s appeal panel – AG

Chief Justice has the right to make changes on Opuni’s appeal panel – AG

Office of the Attorney-General (AG) and Ministry of Justice has refuted claims that the Chief Justice violated Article 157(3) of the 1992 Constitution in her alterations to the panel overseeing the appeal of former Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, May 14, the AG’s office dismissed these reports as fabricated attempts to undermine confidence in the judiciary, emphasising the importance of rejecting such falsehoods.

Citing a publication in the Herald newspaper and remarks made by legal practitioner Kweku Asare, the AG’s statement affirmed the Chief Justice’s authority to assemble a panel for any case within any court.

The AG clarified that the Chief Justice’s actions during Opuni’s May 8 appeal hearing were lawful and justified.

“For the purpose of educating the public, the A-G states that no party to proceedings in court has a right to insist on a particular court or panel of a court to hear his or her case. In accordance with the Constitution and the Courts Act, 1993 (Act 459), the Chief Justice determines the composition of every court for the hearing of any matter.

“The Chief Justice is a member of every court in the country and has the power to request in writing a Justice of any of the Superior Courts of Judicature to sit on either the Court of Appeal or the High Court at any time.

Further, consistent with article 128(3) of the Constitution, the Chief Justice presides at sittings of the Supreme Court, and in his absence, the most senior of the Justices of the Supreme Court, as constituted, shall preside.”

The statement added that it has learned with grave concern the attempts by some media houses aligned to Dr. Opuni and their attempts to distort proceedings and facts relating to the case

“The A-G notes the persistent attempts by some media houses aligned to Dr Opuni to distort the effect of court proceedings relating to the prosecution of the former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board.

These publications, many a time, are a gross misrepresentation of the evidence led at the trial, intended to ridicule the case of the prosecution and create false impressions about the soundness of the defence put up by Dr Opuni at his trial.

“The A-G observes that most of the publications on the “Opuni case,” orchestrated by the accused persons themselves, transgress the limits of permissible speech as they are calculated at perverting the course of justice and/or prejudicing the fair hearing of that case.

Nonetheless, the Republic remains focused against all the accused persons in the case mentioned above and will not be overawed in that process.”

Times are hard, but govt won’t cancel nursing, teacher trainee allowances, – Sammi Awuku

Campaign aide to the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Sammi Awuku, has affirmed that despite financial challenges, the government will uphold the allowances for nursing and teacher trainees.

This assurance was reiterated by the Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), who acknowledged the government’s fiscal constraints but underscored the importance of these allowances in supporting the education and training of nurses and teachers.

The statement comes amidst complaints from some trainee nurses who have yet to receive their allowances.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Awuku assured that these allowances would be maintained, even under the potential presidency of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Additionally, he affirmed the continuity of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

Awuku also disclosed the government’s efforts to settle its arrears for trainee nurses, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the concerns of those affected.

“In the face of the extreme challenge that we face, this government is still determined that the nursing training allowance that was restored will stay. The teacher trainee allowance that was restored will stay and stay even in the Bawumia government.”

“The free SHS will stay. I think it is a couple of months or so that we are in arrears and I can confidently say that just as the Vice President also indicated, together with the Ministry of Finance we are making sure that these candidates, these young adults, get to be paid their full benefits before they say goodbye to school,” he stated.

The children are not your cheerleaders – NDC rants over students involvement in Bawumia campaign

Main opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticised the use of students to welcome Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the North East Region, denouncing it as exploitative.

In a statement, the NDC condemned the exploitation of valuable learning time for political purposes, asserting that such actions should be condemned by all educators in the country.

Dr. Bawumia, who is also the presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), embarked on a campaign tour in the North East Region on Monday.

Upon his arrival in Walewale, he was greeted by supporters, including senior high school students dressed in their school uniforms.

However, the NDC argued that involving schoolchildren during school hours was inappropriate, as Dr. Bawumia’s visit was political rather than official.

The NDC’s Walewale Constituency Communications Officer accused the NPP of pressuring headteachers to assemble students along the streets of Walewale to welcome their flagbearer.

“It is deeply concerning that headteachers are coerced into diverting students from their classrooms to serve as cheerleaders for political campaigns. Parents entrust their children to schools with the expectation that they will receive quality education, not be used as political pawns,” he said.

He urged the leadership to join in condemning the use of students as political party cheerleaders, noting that “schools are meant to be sanctuaries of learning, not platforms for political theatrics.”

The NDC Communication Officer added that “it is unjustifiable to sacrifice the educational development of students for the political agenda of the Vice President, H.E. Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.”

Bright Simons files for RTI for clarity in KMA -Fidelity Bank’s GHS 3m saga

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has filed a Right to Information (RTI) request with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to obtain detailed information about the use of GH¢3.6 million and its dealings with Fidelity Bank Ghana.

He aims to bring transparency to what he perceives as a lack of clarity in the interactions between the bank and KMA.

In a tweet, Simons mentioned his request to KMA for complete disclosure of all transactions with the bank. He believes that the current stance of the institution indicates potential financial impropriety, highlighting the necessity for full transparency.

“Having followed the confusing back & forth between Fidelity Bank Ghana & the KMA, we have sent an RTI request to the KMA to disclose all its transactions with the bank.

There is a murkiness about what is going on that raises concerns about financial propriety. Full transparency is needed,” he tweeted on May 14, 2024.

    https://twitter.com/BBSimons/status/1790332272282861717/photo/1

The issue stems from a GH¢8 million loan obtained from Fidelity Bank for the redevelopment of the KMA-Krofrom Market Project. Reports indicate that only GH¢5 million was utilized for project execution, leaving GH¢3.6 million unaccounted for.

However, Fidelity Bank has refuted any wrongdoing, clarifying that the entire GH¢8.6 million disbursed for Phase 1 of the project comprised GH¢4 million from Fidelity Bank’s approved facility and KMA’s own funds of GH¢4.6 million.

Bright Simons’ RTI request aims to gain comprehensive insight into the arrangements between Fidelity Bank and KMA, aiding in factual analysis and pursuit of public interest objectives.

His legal representatives stress the imperative of complete disclosure, citing statutory and public policy considerations.

This situation underscores concerns regarding financial integrity, prompting the RTI request to illuminate the transactions and ensure transparency and accountability in public fund utilization.

It is anticipated that both KMA and Fidelity Bank will fully cooperate to address the matter and provide requisite information to the public.

Cement price hits GHC110 per bag

Ghanaian journalist and businesswoman Bridget Otoo has revealed in a tweet on May 13, 2024, that the price of cement is set to see an increase.

Her tweet includes an image resembling a screenshot from a WhatsApp conversation among cement wholesalers, discussing the new price adjustments.

Previously, cement was priced at GHS 95.5, sometimes sold at GHS 100 in retail shops. However, the new price stands at GHS 102, excluding GHACEM.

It’s expected that GHACEM will be sold at a higher price, varying depending on the customer’s location.

    The tweet read:
“The price you are seeing is exclusive of transportation and offloading. then the retailer would add his/her profit. 95.5+3.5=99 plus profit of 3 cedis 102 … and I used the least amount in doing the calculation; depending on your location, it could go higher. This is not even GHACEM so imagine when GHACEM goes up! Wow!”

Over the years, cement prices in Ghana have undergone notable fluctuations, driven by various factors such as energy costs, transportation costs, exchange rates and raw material availability, among others.

  • Ketu South Sea Defence Project: Phase Two to begin soon

Ketu South Sea Defence Project: Phase Two to begin soon

Efforts are underway to begin Phase II of the Agavedzi-Blekusu Sea Defence Project in Ketu South, aimed at safeguarding coastal communities from recurrent tidal wave threats.

This development was revealed during a recent visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing, prompted by the Speaker of Parliament on May 13, 2024.

The directive from the Speaker follows concerns raised by all three Members of Parliament representing the coastal constituencies of Ketu South, Keta, and Anlo regarding the urgent need to preserve the coastline from further degradation.

Their concerns come after the most recent incident of tidal waves sweeping through the coastal areas of Ketu South on March 4, 2022.

The unfortunate incident flooded  85 houses in the early hours, displacing more than 300 people in the towns of Agavedzi and Salakope.

In light of this, Chairman of the Committee, Isaac Asiamah, disclosed that the government has secured $150 million for the project in Ketu South and other coastal communities.

He assured me that plans are underway for the commencement of phase II in the near future.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Asiamah emphasised the importance of expediting the proposed 8-kilometre stretch, along with auxiliary facilities such as a cold store, fishing market, and clinic, estimated at $83 million.

He expressed concern over the lack of progress in safeguarding the area since the Committee’s previous visit two years ago, emphasising the urgency of addressing the situation to prevent the loss of a valuable resource with significant potential for tourism and transportation.

He stressed: “We will not allow this critical part of Ghana to go to waste.”

Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, another Committee Member, expressed concern over the high estimated cost for the continuation of the defence project at Agavedzi-Blekusu.

He advocated for the careful allocation of resources to ensure that protection efforts can be extended to cover a large expanse of coastline and address the pressing situation effectively.

The construction of the sea defense project commenced in October 2010 and concluded in October 2014, with an approximate expenditure of 41 million Euros.

The initial phase, referred to as the Blekuso Project, commenced in 2015 and was successfully completed.

The subsequent phase aimed to cover approximately 8 kilometers along the coastal stretch.

The region has grappled with significant challenges stemming from tidal waves, resulting in extensive damage to homes and livelihoods. For instance, in June 2015, around 56 houses in the towns of Dzita and Fuveme were obliterated, rendering many residents homeless.

The situation escalated in November 2021 when tidal waves swept through human settlements in the Keta and Ketu Municipalities, displacing approximately 3,000 individuals.

  • Man Utd’s Martínez ready to return from injury – Ten Hag confirms

Man Utd’s Martínez ready to return from injury – Ten Hag confirms

Erik ten Hag anticipates Lisandro Martínez’s return to fitness for Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League match against Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Despite grappling with foot, knee, and calf issues, Martinez has only managed 11 appearances this season. His last game was on March 30 in a 1-1 draw against Brentford.

However, he is expected to make a comeback and be included in the squad for the Newcastle fixture.

“I think he will return to the squad,” Ten Hag told a news conference on Tuesday. “He’s had some sessions with us and we plan for him to be available. If this afternoon everything goes right in training, he will return to the squad.

Some other players we have to see are Bruno [Fernandes], [Marcus] Rashford, and Willy Kambwala.”

On Tuesday, Manchester United revealed that Raphaël Varane will depart from the club at the conclusion of the season.

While he won’t be available for the Newcastle match, there is optimism that he could participate in the final Premier League game against Brighton and potentially the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley on May 25.

“We are planning, definitely, for the last games,” Ten Hag. said. “Not tomorrow, but we hope for Sunday and then, of course, for the last game [against City].”

With just two games remaining, Manchester United currently sit in eighth place in the table.

Failing to secure at least four points from their upcoming matches against Newcastle and Brighton would result in the club ending the season with their lowest-ever Premier League points tally, surpassing the 58 points achieved in the 2021–22 campaign.

To secure a spot in Europe through their league position, Ten Hag’s team must finish in the top seven. Alternatively, they would need to win the FA Cup to qualify for the Europa League.

“It’s a very important game [against Newcastle],” Ten Hag said. “You see the ranking, so it’s very important to get the win. We have to do everything in it to get the win and we have to fight hard for it.”

Liverpool target Newcastle’s Gordon – Reports

Liverpool has set their sights on Anthony Gordon, the winger from Newcastle United, as one of their initial signings for the post-Jurgen Klopp era, according to the Daily Star.

Gordon, aged 23, has consistently dazzled with his performances under Eddie Howe’s management, earning his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

With a potential Euro 2024 appearance on the horizon, Gordon’s displays have piqued the interest of Liverpool, despite Newcastle’s reluctance to part ways with the player they acquired from Everton for £45 million last August.

However, Newcastle is anticipated to offload a couple of their key players during the transfer window to adhere to profit and sustainability regulations.

Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimarães have already been linked with lucrative moves, heightening the pressure on Howe, especially given Gordon’s impressive record of 10 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League.

Newcastle’s resolve to retain Gordon would be severely tested with an offer approaching £100 million.

Despite this, Newcastle’s current sixth position in the Premier League standings and their aspirations for European football next season provide a strong foundation for their efforts to retain Gordon’s services.

“I have not taken any decision yet” – George Afriyie on another GFA presidential attempt

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, is hesitant about his plans to once again contend for the presidential position.

Afriyie’s aspirations to lead the football governing body were dashed last year when he faced disqualification ahead of the election, which ultimately saw Kurt Okraku emerge victorious.

In response, Afriyie opted to appeal his disqualification to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). However, his case was recently dismissed, adding a new layer of uncertainty to his future ambitions.

Given this latest setback, Afriyie expresses doubt regarding his willingness to pursue the presidency once more.

“Nobody knows tomorrow. I have not taken any decision yet, but in life, you just have to focus and do what you want to do, and then when there is time and opportunity to do anything, why not?” he told Graphic Sports.

On the decision to dismiss his appeal, he added, “I just gave my opinion, and I said, per what the CAS ruling is, I have accepted it, so we move.”

Afriyie held the position of vice president under Kwesi Nyantakyi’s leadership in the association.

You imposed the vaccines on us, now find solutions to the side effects – Kwesi Pratt fumes

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has voiced criticism against Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, regarding his remarks concerning the withdrawal of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Pratt argued that the health ministry should prioritise transparency with the Ghanaian populace, clarifying that the vaccine’s withdrawal stems from identified side effects rather than commercial motives.

He stressed the importance of Dr. Kuma-Aboagye and his team addressing strategies to alleviate the side effects experienced by vaccinated individuals instead of offering unnecessary justifications.

During an appearance on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show, the veteran journalist openly rebuked the health ministry’s handling of the vaccine withdrawal issue.

“Those of us compelled to get vaccinated now face a medical risk. The ministry should be informing us about countermeasures for the side effects to prevent fatalities.

The claim that the withdrawal is for commercial, not medical, reasons is unacceptable.

“A superior vaccine constitutes a medical rationale. They must provide us with credible information, or we will be justifiably upset. They forced the whole population to take the vaccine; now they’re giving us irrelevant explanations,” he fumed.

These remarks come in response to the Ghana Health Service’s (GHS) explanation for the removal of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, citing commercial rather than medical reasons.

During a press conference held as part of the COVID-19 Vaccination and Child Health Promotion Week/African Vaccination Week Campaign in Accra’s Ga East Municipality, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye clarified that the decision was driven by commercial factors.

He highlighted the presence of superior vaccines on the market, rendering AstraZeneca non-competitive.

“They are withdrawing for commercial reasons in the sense that there are superior vaccines on the market, and so if you are in a market and you will not be able to compete, why produce something when others will go for some other brand?” citinewsroom.com reported him as having said:

Late Atta Mills’ message to Black Stars players before US match at 2010 World Cup

Former Black Stars defender Lee Addy recently reminisced about his experiences during the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa.

Representing Ghana Premier League club Berekum Chelsea at the time, Addy made his World Cup debut in this unforgettable tournament.

In a comprehensive discussion on Ernest Brew Smith’s YouTube channel, Addy reflected on the intensity of the match against the United States, highlighting it as his most demanding encounter.

He vividly recalls the emotional rush he experienced when he stepped onto the field with the score deadlocked at 1-1.

However, Addy found strength and motivation from an unexpected source—a pre-match visit from Ghana’s then-president, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, who graced the team’s dressing room with his presence.

Professor Mills underscored the historical significance of the match against the US and emphasised the imperative of securing a victory for Ghana.

“Professor Mills visited us in the dressing room to offer motivation.

He encouraged us to seek victory, citing Ghana’s historical edge over the US. He assured us that history was in our favour and that we should strive for a win. Professor Mills expressed his support for our pursuit of victory,” Addy recounted.

Addy also disclosed a remarkable interaction with the iconic African statesman, Nelson Mandela, who made some prescient remarks about Ghana’s upcoming quarter-final match against Uruguay.

“Nelson Mandela met with us before the Uruguay match and foretold the events of the game. He warned us that we would be wronged,” Addy revealed.

Slot intends to bring Feyenoord’s Hulshoff on board at Liverpool – Sources

Arne Slot is poised to appoint Sipke Hulshoff, his assistant at Feyenoord, as the initial addition to his coaching staff at Liverpool once he takes over from Jürgen Klopp, according to sources at ESPN.

Klopp is set to oversee his final game as Liverpool manager this weekend when Wolves visit Anfield on Sunday, marking the end of his tenure since October 2015.

Although Liverpool has yet to officially confirm Slot’s appointment as their new manager, they have reportedly reached a compensation agreement of £9.4 million ($11.8m) with Feyenoord for the 45-year-old.

Sources suggest an official announcement is probable next week, following Klopp’s departure.

Slot indicated during a recent news conference that confirmation of his move to Liverpool would occur “in a matter of days,” and sources reveal he has already begun assembling his coaching team at Anfield.

Sipke Hulshoff, 49, has been Slot’s colleague at Feyenoord since 2022 and has also served as an assistant for the Netherlands alongside former Everton manager Ronald Koeman since January 2023.

Slot and Hulshoff previously collaborated as co-coaches at Cambuur in 2016, marking the beginning of Slot’s coaching journey, before Slot transitioned to AZ Alkmaar a year later.

With Klopp’s departure, Liverpool faces a summer of restructuring both on and off the pitch, as his existing coaching staff—Pep Lijnders, Peter Krawietz, Vitor Matos, and goalkeeper coach John Achterberg—are also set to depart from Anfield.

Paris came alive on Monday, May 13, 2023, as the annual French Football Awards, known as the Union of French Players (UNFP) Awards, unfolded.

This glamorous event, the pinnacle of the football season, serves as a platform to honour the outstanding achievements and contributions of players, coaches, and clubs throughout the year.

Among the distinguished attendees was Andre Ayew, the dynamic forward from Le Havre and the Captain of the Black Stars.

Ayew found himself in contention for the Goal of the Season award, thanks to his spectacular bicycle kick goal for Le Havre AC during their thrilling 3-3 draw against Lorient.

Dressed to impress, Ayew sported a stylish two-piece suit, featuring a crisp white long-sleeved shirt, a ‘cut out’ inner vest, and a suit jacket adorned with intricate crystal embroidery, exuding sophistication and flair.

Although Ayew’s remarkable goal captured hearts, it was Kamory Doumbia of Stade Brest, hailing from Mali, who clinched the coveted award.

  • Akufo-Addo now indifferent to Ghanaians wrath – Amaliba

Akufo-Addo now indifferent to Ghanaians wrath – Amaliba

Director of Conflict Resolution and former Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, expressed his concern over the Akufo-led NPP government’s apparent lack of fear regarding public opinion.

He was particularly dismayed by revelations made at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting on Thursday, May 9, regarding the payment of US$11 million to a contractor for the Pwalugu multipurpose dam project, despite no visible progress at the site.

Amaliba described the site as “a grassland” with no work done.

The Pwalugu project, a flagship initiative of the current government, includes components for power generation, irrigation, and flood control.

Speaking on The Big Issue on TV3 on Friday, the private legal practitioner and NDC communicator stressed that Ghanaians should be more vocal in expressing their dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government.

“Yesterday, listening to the public accounts committee, I cringed when I heard 11 million dollars was paid to a contractor for the completion of the Pwaulu Multipurpose Dam.

Yet when you go to that place, it is grassland. And you wonder why criminals who have taken over the reins of government would do this to mother Ghana.

“Aren’t you angry? You have a situation where money is paid to a contractor and you get to the site, there is nothing there, and you say I shouldn’t describe them as thieves,” he said.

“I am of the view that, as a country, we have not lived up to expectations as a people. When a government gets to a point where it doesn’t fear the wrath of the people, this is what happens.

Governments must always be afraid of the people…but you get to a point where the government does not fear the wrath of the people, you have these things happening.”

He added, “You give 11 million dollars out as the final payment and yet there is not a single block laid at the place.”

Construction activities began in November 2019 after President Akufo-Addo ceremonially initiated the project. Subsequently, Parliament approved the project on February 26, 2020.

Financed by the Government of Ghana, the project is expected to be completed within approximately fifty (50) months.

Police arrest 2 after clash between Leeds-Norwich fans

Following the Championship play-off clash between Leeds United and Norwich, police arrested two fans after a man was reportedly ‘slashed’.

The incident occurred outside Carrow Road following the 0-0 draw between the two teams. Both the police and the club have confirmed that the victim received treatment, and the arrests were made in connection with the attack.

In a recent statement, Norfolk Police said: “Two men have been arrested following an incident in Norwich this afternoon. A man aged in his 60s reported being punched outside Norwich City FC’s stadium on Carrow Road.

An object is also believed to have been thrown at the victim, who suffered a cut to his chin.

The victim was seen by paramedics at the scene and did not require further medical treatment.

“A man aged in his late teens was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting GBH and taken to the Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

A man aged 50 was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.”

Violence at football matches is unfortunately not uncommon, especially when so much is at stake, as was the case with the Leeds and Norwich match.

Such behaviour, which endangers lives, should never be tolerated. Increased police presence in recent years has been one measure taken to address these issues off the pitch.

The two teams will face off in the second leg at Elland Road on Thursday night to determine who will advance to the final at Wembley.

Despite finishing 17 points ahead of Norwich in the league standings, Leeds could see their season come to an end at the hands of the East Anglian side.

In a statement released on Monday, May 13, 2024, the civil society organisation asserted that the Chief Justice’s abrupt alterations to the panel handling the case of the former COCOBOD CEO constitute interference in the administration of justice.

ASEPA added that the action of the Chief Justice is a violation of Article 157(3) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides that “no person sitting in a Superior Court for the determination of any cause or matter shall, having heard the arguments of the parties to that cause or matter and before judgement is delivered, withdraw as a member of the court or tribunal, or as a member of the panel determining that cause or matter, nor shall that person become functus officio in respect of that cause or matter, until judgement is delivered.

“We find it extremely unusual that a panel would be reconstituted in such fundamental terms without an explanation from the Court.

In our view, the sudden move raises the possibility of judicial interference, undermines judicial independence, and casts a negative slur on the administration of justice,” part of the statement signed by the Executive Director of ASEPA, Mensah Thompson, reads.

“We remind the Chief Justice that her power to empanel is not a constitutional power. It is exercised as a result of the Court’s norms.

Furthermore, she has no power to interfere with the operations of a constituted panel. Therefore, if she reshuffled the Opuni panel, then she acted ultra vires the Constitution.

We have no doubt that the reshuffling of panels is contra to Article 296, which calls for administrative powers to be exercised without caprice,” it added.

The group also noted that “it is this propensity for abuse and interference that forms the basis of why ASEPA has always advocated for the amendment of the law to make the process of empanelment a purely administrative process, away from the quasi-political clutches of the Chief Justice and putting it right in the hands of the Registrar of the Supreme Court, who is a permanent officer of the Court.”

A report by theheraldghana.com revealed that the panel for the case underwent a last-minute change on the day of judgement, leaving many legal experts, including Dr. Opuni’s counsel, Lawyer Samuel Codjoe, perplexed.

Both the legal teams of the plaintiff and the accused individuals had presented their arguments before an earlier panel and submitted their written submissions, anticipating the court’s verdict.

The original panel, consisting of Justice Mariama Owusu (presiding), Justices Yaw Darko Asare, Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi, George Kingsley Koomson, and Henry A. Kwofie, was replaced. The new panel was composed of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo (presiding), Justices Mariama Owusu, Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Yaw Darko Asare, and Ernest Gaewu.

Dr. Opuni, businessman Seidu Agongo, and Agricult Ghana Limited are facing 27 charges, including defrauding by false pretences, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, corruption by public officers, and contravention of the Public Procurement Act.

‘Forced’ to eat fufu without soup – Asiedu Nketia on commissioning of uncompleted Kumasi Airport

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has raised concerns about the recent commissioning of the Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi by President Akufo-Addo.

Despite the elaborate ceremony, Nketia expressed confusion over the decision to inaugurate a project that is still under construction.

He emphasised the imprudence of opening a facility that is not yet fully operational and suggested that President Akufo-Addo should have waited until the airport was completed before declaring it open to the public.

“If it had been completed, aeroplanes would have landed there. It’s like making fufu without soup and asking us to eat,” he said in an Instagram video posted by Nana Yaa Brefo, host of the Yen Nsempa Morning show on Onua FM.

“There are bulldozers working everywhere, and you’re telling me it’s finished,” he exclaimed, questioning the legitimacy of the commissioning ceremony.

According to the NDC Chairman, the premature commissioning of the airport reflects a political agenda aimed at garnering favour rather than addressing the practical needs of the people.

“I’ve already mentioned that the president’s judgement should be examined,” Nketia remarked pointedly.

On May 10, 2024, the Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi was officially opened.
The airport’s interior is meticulously arranged into various operational areas, with many staircase walls crafted from glass to provide a visually appealing ambiance.

Welcoming visitors at the entrance is the sign “Nante Yie,” symbolising a “safe journey.”

This airport is expected to elevate the international profile of the Ashanti Region and contribute significantly to the economic prosperity of the local community.

  • Arsenal advised to go for “fit, explosive” Sancho after impressive UCL display

Arsenal advised to go for “fit, explosive” Sancho after impressive UCL display

Former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Petit has urged his former club to consider signing Jadon Sancho this summer.

Sancho, who has struggled to find his place at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag, is currently excelling on loan in Germany.

Petit believes that Arsenal could greatly benefit from acquiring the English international, drawing parallels to how they revitalised Kai Havertz’s career after a challenging period at Chelsea.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, Petit said: “I was saying how impressed I was with Jadon Sancho in the Champions League on commentary—he looks like a new player, so fit, thin and explosive.

He’s like dynamite on the pitch so explosive on the ball with [Karim] Adeyemi on the left flank—so hard to catch.

He’s back to his best and Manchester United look so far away from them, so if Arsenal want him, why not? You can put the best player in the world at Manchester United at the moment and they’d look average in two months.”

Since returning to Dortmund on loan in January, Sancho has scored three goals and provided one assist across all competitions.

He still has the opportunity to cap off the season as a European champion, as Dortmund will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final next month.

Heading to Wembley for the final presents the perfect stage for Sancho to demonstrate his ability to perform at the highest level.

Securing the coveted trophy would undoubtedly enhance his value and generate considerable interest ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Olivier Giroud announces departure for MLS in emotional message

French football star Olivier Giroud has officially announced his departure from AC Milan, confirming that he will be joining Major League Soccer (MLS) this summer, with a move to LAFC on the horizon.

Giroud, a legendary striker for France, has spent nearly four years with Milan since joining them from Chelsea in the summer of 2021.

While he did not specify his destination within MLS, he has been consistently linked with a move to LAFC.

During the 2023-24 season, Giroud had an outstanding campaign with Milan, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists in Serie A.

His arrival at LAFC will be a significant boost for the team, as they have been seeking to fill the void left by former MLS MVP Carlos Vela, who departed as a free agent last summer.

Giroud’s partnership with 2023 MLS Golden Boot winner Denis Bouanga is expected to be formidable, instantly becoming one of the league’s most potent attacking duos.

Additionally, Giroud will reunite with longtime friend and former France international Hugo Lloris in Los Angeles.

Giroud has announced that Milan’s final two matches of the season will mark his farewell, confirming his move to MLS this summer.

Despite not officially confirming LAFC as his destination, multiple reports strongly indicate that the Frenchman will soon become a player for Los Angeles. He is expected to conclude his time in Milan before officially joining the Los Angeles-based team.

Herbert Mensah leads a walk to commemorate 23 years since the Accra Sports Stadium Disaster

Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko Chairman Herbert Mensah on Saturday, May 11, 2024 led a multitude of Ghanaians through the principal streets of Kumasi to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Accra Sports Stadium Disaster.

This tragic event, which took place on May 9, 2001, resulted in the loss of over 126 Ghanaian soccer fans during a league match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The walk saw participation from various keep-fit clubs, survivors of hole-in-heart disease, ordinary Ghanaians, and members of the physically disabled society.

The May 9 Accra Stadium Disaster remains a sombre chapter in the history of African football.

At the time of the disaster, Herbert Mensah was the chairman of Asante Kotoko and was widely celebrated for his dynamic and charismatic leadership of the club. He was actively involved in conveying deceased soccer fans and rescuing surviving ones on the evening of the tragedy.

Subsequently, Mensah established the May 9 Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to providing support and assistance to the families and victims affected by the Accra Stadium Disaster.

More recently, the foundation collaborated with the Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation to help families whose children suffer from hole-in-heart disease access costly surgical operations they could not afford otherwise.

The Heart Foundation was founded by Y.C. Shen, a Chinese business mogul operating in Ghana, as the head of the SUNDA group.

Speaking of the transitional progress made by the May 9 Foundation over the years, Herbert Mensah told Ghanaians, “In the last year, we have teamed up with the Shen Yang Children’s Heart Foundation of which I am the secretary, and whose founder, YC Shen, an extraordinary man from China, has invested so much in the heart surgeries of more than 25 children at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Kow Entsua Mensah of the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra, and in the process, we have saved the lives of many children, although some could not make it.”

Following the street walk, Herbert Mensah accompanied some of the families and their children, who had undergone successful hole-in-the-heart surgeries, to visit the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

As the life patron of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and celebrating 25 years as the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II received the visitors warmly.

Arsenal set to let go of Eddie Nketiah

Arsenal is reportedly seeking to offload striker Eddie Nketiah during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The decision comes as part of the club’s efforts to facilitate his development by allowing him to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

It’s understood that Arsenal views Nketiah as unlikely to become the team’s primary striker and wishes to support his growth to maximise his potential.

Nketiah, 24, is among seven first-team players Arsenal has earmarked for potential sale.

The others include Aaron Ramsdale, Emile Smith Rowe, Kieran Tierney, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Reiss Nelson.

Despite contributing five goals and two assists this season, Arsenal aims to replace Nketiah with a more established striker to enhance its competitiveness in the English Premier League and other competitions in the upcoming seasons.

  • Ayew’s current record at club will be hard for Otto Addo to ignore in call-ups – Saani Daara

Ayew’s current record at club will be hard for Otto Addo to ignore in call-ups – Saani Daara

Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Saanie Daara, has expressed his view on the challenging situation facing Black Stars coach Otto Addo regarding the inclusion of captain Andre Dede Ayew in the squad.

Ayew has encountered difficulties with the Black Stars due to their recent performances, particularly with group stage exits in the last two AFCON editions and the 2022 FIFA World Cup under his captaincy.

While some fans advocate for a transition away from Ayew, Saanie Daara argues that it will be incredibly tough to omit him from the squad at this juncture.

Despite the team’s struggles, Ayew’s performance in the French Ligue 1, where he has scored 5 goals this season, with one nominated for Goal of the Season, suggests that the 34-year-old still has much to offer.

In a post on X, the former GFA spokesperson stated, “To think that Andre Ayew is able to produce such a goal that wins the Goal of the Month award in the French top flight shows that he has more to offer. Well done, Capi.”

“This will be hard for Otto Addo to ignore in his Black Stars call-ups,” he added.

Coach Otto Addo is expected to name Ghana’s squad for the game against Mali in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the coming weeks.

  • Man Utd cancel end of season awards event again following disappointing season

Man Utd cancel end of season awards event again following disappointing season

Man Utd has decided to cancel their annual end-of-season awards ceremony amidst the conclusion of a deeply disappointing campaign.

This decision mirrors last season’s cancellation, which occurred during a rough patch under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Originally slated for May 20, the celebration has been removed from the calendar altogether. Despite this cancellation, players will still receive their annual awards, including the prestigious Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year prize.

However, these accolades will be distributed without a formal event.

The rationale behind this decision, according to The Athletic, is to avoid any additional distractions leading up to the FA Cup final against Manchester City, scheduled just five days after the initial event plan on May 25.

While the senior team, under Erik ten Hag’s management, has struggled this season, with a recent 1-0 defeat to Arsenal leaving them in eighth place in the Premier League, other branches of the club have seen success.

United’s women’s team clinched their first major trophy by winning the FA Cup, while the Under-18 side dominated the U18 Premier League North and advanced to the National Premier League Final.

Traditionally, these achievements would be celebrated at the annual awards ceremony, but they will now be acknowledged through internal events.

The women’s academy sides have already conducted their own ceremonies to honour their accomplishments at both the Under-21 and Under-18 levels.

  • Marc Skinner dedicates Women’s FA Cup win to the Man Utd fans

Marc Skinner dedicates Women’s FA Cup win to the Man Utd fans

Man Utd manager Marc Skinner expressed his satisfaction in achieving his initial objectives with the club upon winning the Women’s FA Cup, fulfilling a promise to the fans.

United’s triumph marked a significant milestone as they secured their first major trophy at Wembley, overpowering Tottenham Hotspur with four goals in a remarkable 20-minute spree around half-time.

Since establishing the women’s first-team in 2018, United has been striving for success, buoyed by the unwavering support of their loyal fanbase.

This support was evident with nearly 5,000 fans attending the inaugural home game six years ago, and Wembley was awash in red as a sold-out allocation of 12,000 fans, including many who had been there since the club’s inception, filled the stands.

The presence of United shirts among neutral supporters underscored the club’s widespread appeal.

Ahead of the final, a bustling scene at Warwick Services on the M40 highlighted the fervent anticipation, with fans travelling from all corners to witness the historic moment.

Coachloads departed from Old Trafford at dawn, while many supporters opted to travel a day in advance to ensure they were part of the unforgettable occasion in London.

“I always said when I came here I wanted to deliver trophies for the best fanbase in the world,” Skinner told reporters as he left Wembley on Sunday evening.

“The ones that came out in force and the ones that couldn’t [bet at Wembley]—we dedicate that to you for everything that you give us. We want it to be the start, not the end, so we’ve got to kick on. But I want every Manchester United fan to celebrate and be proud of their contribution.”

For Skinner, who has come under fire from some fans this season, it was also the end of seven years of personal hurt.

He was previously a losing manager at Wembley in 2017, when his Birmingham City side were thrashed by Manchester City. He was then unable to set that right when Chelsea narrowly prevailed over United in last season’s final.

“It’s nice to feel and be in the moment with it,” the United boss explained. “The players have been incredible, and the staff have been incredible. We’re not where we want to be in the league; we have to caveat that.

We want to be higher up, of course. But to add a historic moment to our fantastic club feels great and we should spend a moment appreciating it.”

Skinner admitted that he found it so “lonely” in the technical area towards the end of his first Wembley experience that he had to have an assistant coach stand with him.

He also explained that Carl Green, one of his United backroom team, told him after the final whistle this time: “Take a moment, because in seven years you’ve come a long way.”

Whether the 41-year-old, who succeeded Casey Stoney in 2021, will be United manager next season remains unconfirmed. His contract is due to expire next month and it has been reported that the club has put forward an offer of a new 12-month deal.

“I don’t care about who tells me I can’t do something,” he said. “If anything, that’s my fuel. I want to lead this team into a successful era. Who knows, maybe that will happen. But for now, here, I’ve delivered what I said I would do to the fans, which is a trophy.”

  • Luis Diaz addresses future at Liverpool amid Barcelona, PSG links

Luis Diaz addresses future at Liverpool amid Barcelona, PSG links

Luis Diaz has expressed contentment with his current situation at Liverpool amidst speculation linking him with a summer departure from Anfield.

The Colombian winger has become a crucial figure in Jurgen Klopp’s squad since his arrival in January 2022. With 13 goals across all competitions this season, Diaz has attracted interest from several top European clubs.

While a move to Paris Saint-Germain has been frequently mentioned, particularly with Kylian Mbappe’s impending departure from the Ligue 1 side, Barcelona’s admiration for Diaz is evident, although financial constraints hinder their pursuit.

Despite the transfer rumours, the 27-year-old seems inclined to prolong his tenure at Anfield. With his existing contract running until 2027, Diaz recently affirmed that he is not currently considering a departure from Liverpool.

In an interview with club media, Diaz said: “I have grown a lot. From the beginning of my career to today, I feel that with the passage of days and years, living each experience in each different team and coming to this great club that is Liverpool leaves you with a lot of learnings.

Liverpool is preparing to usher in a new era under the leadership of incoming manager Arne Slot, as the legendary Jurgen Klopp steps down from his role at the end of the season.

While Klopp’s final season may not have been filled with the usual glory, Diaz remains optimistic, believing that there are still valuable lessons to be gleaned from the campaign.

“You learn more and more to be a professional, to be a better person, to be a good teammate, and to be a good guy. The truth is that I am very happy to be here. Great years are coming for the club; I have no doubt about that.

“Personally, I will always try to do my best, always try to give 100%, to always stand out on the field, which is what I came [here] to do. I’m always grateful to God for every opportunity.”

Liverpool are set to welcome new manager Arne Slot to the team, with legendary boss Klopp stepping down from his position at the end of the season.

Klopp’s final season may have lacked glory, but Diaz believes there are still things to take from the campaign.

“For us, it was crucial to win the league and all the competitions we were in,” Diaz said of Klopp’s farewell. “Unfortunately, the results lately could not be achieved. We fell [behind] as a team, but we had a decent season, both individually and as a group.

“There are many things to improve so we can have a perfect season. But I’m happy and content to be here.”

Liverpool return to action on Monday when they travel to Aston Villa.

“Stop asking me” – Xavi loses patience after inquiry into Barcelona’s transfer plans

Barcelona manager Xavi grew visibly frustrated during a press conference on Sunday, urging reporters to refrain from probing about the club’s transfer plans.

Currently, the Blaugrana are locked in a battle to secure even a second-place finish in La Liga this season. They trail behind Catalan rivals Girona by two points, though Barcelona have played one game fewer.

A victory over Real Sociedad on Monday evening could potentially see them reclaim control of second position.

However, inquiries regarding how a third-place finish might influence Barcelona’s transfer strategy dominated Xavi’s latest press conference. Despite his efforts to address the questions, the persistent probing eventually led him to lose his composure.

“I understand that right now it’s being written that some [players] are transferable or non-transferable, but right now there are no transferables as long as La Liga continues,” Xavi began.

“I don’t think planning depends on [finishing second]. For us, it is important to finish second. But the plan is not going to change. The relief is to win ourselves and the four games we have left.”

Asked whether he had made a decision on the future of Ansu Fati, who will return from his disappointing loan with Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, Xavi said: “Stop asking me about planning because I won’t say any names.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO2DCig33zs

Barcelona appears to be on the verge of securing their first signing of the summer with Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez, a long-standing target set to join on a free transfer as his contract expires.

While the club harbors ambitious aspirations, officials have stressed that formal plans will only materialize once Barcelona’s financial situation becomes clearer.

Vice-president Rafa Yuste emphasized the importance of meeting La Liga’s 1:1 formula, ensuring they have the financial strength to spend €1 for every €1 raised, before delving into transfer discussions.

The future of Ansu Fati is poised to spark genuine debate as he readies himself to return to Camp Nou. The 21-year-old embarked on a loan spell with Brighton last summer in a bid to regain fitness and form.

However, his playing time has been limited, starting just three times in the Premier League and tallying four goals from 25 appearances across all competitions.

Additionally, talks are imminent regarding Vitor Roque, whose agent has expressed intentions of seeking a permanent move away from Barcelona if assurances of increased playing time next season cannot be guaranteed.

In a TikTok post, Amoateng humorously showcased the extensive array of food items that Gyan and Franklin packed for their journey, jokingly suggesting they may have brought along the entire supply of Accra’s culinary delights.

CNN’s Madowo teases Man Utd’s Old Trafford with “nicer stadium in Africa” remarks after leaks

CNN reporter Larry Madowo criticized Man Utd for the condition of Old Trafford Stadium.

Madowo, a passionate Arsenal fan, attended the Premier League match between Manchester United and Arsenal on May 12, 2024.

During the game, which Arsenal won 1-0 thanks to Leandro Trossard’s goal, heavy rain exposed significant leaks in the stadium’s roof.

Madowo captured a video of the incident, sparking widespread condemnation among football fans who deemed it unworthy of Manchester United’s stature.

The Kenyan broadcaster captioned the video, “If I hadn’t filmed the Old Trafford waterfall myself, I wouldn’t have believed it. I’ve seen nicer stadiums in Africa.”

Manchester United have been condemned for their poor maintenance of Old Trafford, with Arsenal legend, Martin Keown, describing the leakage as worse than the Manchester United defence.

Arsenal’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United has kept the Premier League title race alive until the final day of the season.

While Manchester City remains in pole position to clinch the title with wins in their last two matches, Mikel Arteta’s side has kept the pressure on them throughout the campaign.

The match saw Rasmus Hojlund squander a golden opportunity to put United ahead, but Arsenal capitalised on their chances.

Kai Havertz seized on a defensive lapse from Casemiro to set up Leandro Trossard for the decisive goal.

Although Arsenal looked comfortable in the first half, they faced increased pressure from United after the break. However, substitute Gabriel Martinelli threatened on the counter-attack, and Arsenal’s defence held firm despite United’s late onslaught.

The result means that Arsenal must secure a win against Everton on the final day and hope for a slip-up from Manchester City against either Tottenham or West Ham to have a chance at claiming the title.
