Martin Odegaard advises Arsenal to ‘respect’ Harry Kane ahead of Champions League showdown

Martin Odegaard has issued a caution to his fellow Arsenal players, advising them to show Harry Kane the proper respect ahead of their upcoming Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

Despite Kane and Bayern facing recent defeats to Heidenheim and Borussia Dortmund, the English striker has had an outstanding season, scoring an impressive 38 goals and providing 12 assists in 37 games.

Odegaard emphasises that Kane’s formidable performance cannot be overlooked, urging his teammates to remain vigilant.

In light of Kane’s remarkable season, Odegaard stresses the importance of not underestimating Bayern Munich, led by coach Thomas Tuchel.

Despite Bayern’s struggles in the Bundesliga, sitting 16 points behind the league leaders, Odegaard warns against complacency, highlighting the unpredictable nature of football.

Odegaard was asked if Arsenal should fear Kane, and replied: “I think we should respect him, but I don’t think we should fear anyone.

“And we should focus on ourselves and the quality we have in our team, and that is all.

“[Kane is] a good player, of course, and I have played against him a few times and we know the quality he has in the box and he is also good in the link-up [play]. We are facing a good team on Tuesday.”

In his career, Kane has faced Arsenal 19 times, all during his tenure with Tottenham, scoring 14 goals. However, he has only won seven of those matches, with Arsenal claiming victory in seven as well, and five ending in draws.

The upcoming clash between Arsenal and Bayern in the first leg of their quarter-final European encounter is scheduled for Tuesday. Before the return leg, Arsenal will face Aston Villa over the weekend, while Bayern will play against Koln.

‘I’m ready for you Barca! and I ain’t even hiding -Mbappe warns ahead Champions League clash

Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain has issued a warning to Barcelona ahead of their upcoming Champions League match.

Mbappe, who has previously proven to be a formidable opponent for Barcelona, notably scoring a hat-trick against them in a previous Champions League fixture, has once again put the Catalan side on notice.

His pivotal role in PSG’s 4-1 victory over Barcelona in the 2021 first leg effectively jeopardised Barcelona’s Champions League hopes. As another showdown approaches, Mbappe’s warning underscores his ability to impact the outcome of the match.

Talking to Telefoot, Mbappe said [via Marca]: “I am ready and, as always, I am not going to hide. Seeing the dynamic we have, I’m sure we’re going to give it our all, then the result… It’s in God’s hands.”

He also talked about the season being at a crucial point: “Like every year, we enter the crucial period of the season. At the end of April, we will already have elements to know what kind of season we will be able to have.”

The reason for the well-publicized split in recent months between Mbappe and PSG boss Luis Enrique is Mbappe’s unwillingness to pledge his future to the Parisian team.

Mbappe has consequently seen himself benched or substituted numerous times over this time. Enrique even made light of the circumstance by speculating that Mbappe, who is currently playing for Barcelona, would encounter a similar fate.

When PSG plays Real Madrid on Wednesday, April 10 at the Parc des Princes, Mbappe will be anxious to show off his skills against Barcelona because there have been rumours of him signing with Real Madrid as a free agent.

On Tuesday, April 16, there will be a vital away game versus Barcelona.

  • Graham Potter snubs Jordan Henderson’s ‘sinking’ Ajax

Graham Potter snubs Jordan Henderson’s ‘sinking’ Ajax

Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has reportedly declined an opportunity to assist Jordan Henderson in addressing the significant challenges facing Dutch powerhouse Ajax.

The Eredivisie club is currently seeking a new permanent manager after parting ways with Maurice Steijn in October 2023.

Interim coach John van’t Schip has been in charge since then but has struggled to turn things around.

Ajax, now with former Liverpool captain Henderson among their ranks, recently suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat to arch-rivals Feyenoord, following an earlier 4-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Europa League.

Sky Sports reports that Potter, who previously managed Chelsea and Brighton, was approached for a key coaching role at Ajax.

However, discussions did not lead to an agreement, as Potter has chosen to postpone his return to coaching after being sacked by Chelsea in April 2023.

The 48-year-old remains a target for Manchester United, who are considering their options regarding Erik ten Hag. This suggests that Potter may soon take on a rebuilding project at Old Trafford rather than tackling the challenges at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

  • “I didn’t want to” – Rodrygo tells why he rejected €3m Liverpool swoop

“I didn’t want to” – Rodrygo tells why he rejected €3m Liverpool swoop

Real Madrid’s talented player, Rodrygo, has revealed why he turned down an offer from Liverpool in 2017.

Despite being just 23 years old, the forward was already catching the eye of European clubs while playing for Santos in Brazil.

Liverpool expressed interest in signing him at one point, but Rodrygo opted to wait for a transfer to Real Madrid, which eventually happened in 2019.

Explaining that decision, Rodrygo has said: “We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good. The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football.

It had always been my dream to play in Europe. Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true; I almost went to Liverpool.”

In his upcoming match, Rodrygo will face English opponents once again, marking a significant moment since his impactful performance off the bench in a semi-final match against Manchester City two years ago. This time, he will be up against the current Premier League title holders.

He added on being handed a tough draw in the quarter-final of continental competition: “It brings back good memories but also bad ones. This was an opponent that, to be honest, we didn’t want to face. And they think the same as well: they didn’t want to play against us.

It’s a game that everyone expects to be the final, but it’s going to be now. Man City are very good, but our team is also very strong. It’s going to be good to meet them again.

“They’re the Champions League winners, they’re the world champions, today they’re the best team in the world, so we have total respect for them. There are no bad or medium [City] players. There’s no player you can think of like: ‘This one I’m going to press because he isn’t good and he will give us a goal or a great chance.’ They have a very good control of the game and of the ball. It’s a very beautiful game, a very difficult team. It’s very annoying to play against them but I believe in our team.”

Real Madrid, currently leading La Liga, will welcome Manchester City on Tuesday for the first leg of a high-stakes quarter-final encounter.

Rodrygo, aiming for another impactful performance, will be eager to play a significant role in the fixture following his decisive brace in the previous match against Athletic Club.

  • It’s over for Jose Mourinho, he’s finished – Antonio

It’s over for Jose Mourinho, he’s finished – Antonio

Antonio Cassano has once again criticized Jose Mourinho, stating that the Portuguese manager is “completely finished” and “not capable of coaching.”

The former Italy international, known for his time at clubs like Real Madrid and Roma, has been consistently taking jabs at Mourinho since retiring from professional football.

He once said that the ex-Chelsea and Manchester United boss “doesn’t give a sh*t about football. He doesn’t like to work;he doesn’t know how to communicate or speak.”

Mourinho has bitten back at times, but Cassano has now told La Domenica Sportiva, with his old adversary currently out of work after leaving Roma in January: “As a coach, Mourinho is now completely finished. He is not capable of coaching anymore, he is still doing the same things as 10 years ago.

He wouldn’t play [Leandro] Paredes and preferred [Edoardo] Bove to [Lorenzo] Pellegrini. [Daniele] De Rossi gave Roma the belief that this is a strong team: he’s doing an extraordinary job. He was always destined for this.”

Mourinho is not the only experienced tactician to come under fire from Cassano, with the outspoken former forward saying of Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri: “Inter are much, much stronger this season, but seeing as Allegri is a coach who says his career is based on results and he hasn’t won anything in three years, it’s time he stepped aside.

He already should’ve done it last season. Juve have 17 internationals and spent €160million on the transfer market, but they play slapdash football, the players can’t seem to string three passes together.”

Jose Mourinho, a highly accomplished manager with a history of winning major honors at every club he’s led, is currently awaiting offers as he prepares for a possible return to management in the summer of 2024.

The Portuguese coach has been linked with clubs in the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, and Saudi Pro League, signaling his availability for new challenges in various football leagues.

Video: Sam Allardyce spotted with Sir Jim Ratcliffe in Old Trafford box as pressure mounts on Ten Hag

Sam Allardyce was seen in the company of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Despite the fierce rivalry between the two teams, United managed to secure a valuable point against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Allardyce was observed watching the match from the stands alongside the INEOS chief and Brailsford.

During halftime, videos emerged showing the three of them engaged in conversation, sparking speculation and jokes that Allardyce might be positioning himself to replace Erik Ten Hag as the manager of Manchester United.

With Manchester United’s slim chances of qualifying for the Champions League, Erik Ten Hag’s future at the club remains uncertain.

While he is scheduled to meet with the new leadership at the end of the current season to discuss his continuation for the next season, the Dutchman appears confident that he will still be retained by the Red Devils, as he believes the ownership has faith in his project.

However, it’s improbable that Sam Allardyce will be considered as a potential replacement for Ten Hag next season.

Allardyce has been without a managerial position since last season, when he was dismissed by Leeds United following the team’s relegation from the Premier League.

Possessed dwarf with a devil’s face – Nico Sanchez fires Messi after an alleged tunnel confrontation

Lionel Messi was reportedly referred to as a “possessed dwarf” with the “face of the devil” during a heated altercation with Monterrey coach Nico Sanchez.

Despite being absent from the first leg of Inter Miami’s CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal match against the Mexican team, Messi, along with Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Tata Martino, engaged in a confrontation with Monterrey players and coaches after their 2-1 loss at Chase Stadium.

Allegedly, the group headed towards the room housing match officials to express discontent with several crucial decisions made during the game.

This confrontation was fueled by comments made by Monterrey boss Fernando Ortiz before the game, suggesting that Inter Miami would receive favorable decisions if Messi played.

In the wake of that argument, audio has been leaked through FOX Sports MX, with Sanchez saying: “The dwarf was possessed, he had the face of the devil.

He put his fist next to my face and says: ‘Who do you think you are?’ But because I didn’t look at him, I was looking away, and I never answered back, It made things worse.

And Tata Martino, what a poor dummy, I had him in front of me, telling me: ‘Fool, you going to cry? Fool, are you going to cry?’ What a dummy! All those videos, they probably erased them all because it leaves them looking bad. What they did was really serious. They want to dirty the pitch.”

Monterrey have requested that CONCACAF look into the heated exchange, but assistant coach Sanchez has apologised for some of his comments – with the Argentine saying, while overlooking fellow countryman Messi:

“Since I do not know the Inter coach, Gerardo Martino, and I referred to him in a disrespectful manner, I apologise. I am as Argentine as all of them and I will always defend my club. I’m here to show my face and take charge.”

Inter Miami and Monterrey will lock horns again on Wednesday, with Messi expected to be included in the Herons’ starting XI for that contest after making his return from injury off the bench in a 2-2 MLS draw with the Colorado Rapids.

Only a ‘senseless’ person wouldn’t want to review Free SHS – Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng

Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, emphasises the importance of the government revisiting the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) initiative.

As a seasoned surgeon, he believes that after more than seven years of implementation, it is essential to review the programme to tackle the numerous challenges it encounters in enhancing Ghana’s educational system.

“This means our educational system is faulty. That is how I take it to be. So at Free SHS, if there are challenges, we have to sit down and say, How do we resolve these challenges? Review may be necessary or change certain things…” he stated during an interview on JoyNews.

Asked whether he believes the policy which offers free education to students across the various public secondary and technical schools is having challenges, the former minister responded in the affirmative, noting the need to address such issues through a review process.

“I think so, I mean, every sensible person will have to review your activities and not say that what I started seven years ago is still the best because if you look at the feeding, even one can talk about it…” he said.

A promise by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, former President John Dramani Mahama, to review the Free SHS policy if he regains power has become an issue of contention, with the ruling New Patriotic Party issuing heavy criticism.

According to the ruling government, the promise by the NDC to review the policy implies a clear intent to cancel the flagship programme of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government.

Despite their criticism of the opposition’s promise, the government has noted the need for a review of the policy which has been fraught with various challenges, including feeding and infrastructure deficit.

Dr. Nduom awards $1k to first graduates of his university as a graduation gift

Founder and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nduom School of Business and Technology (NSBT), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, honoured a commitment to the institution’s first batch of students by awarding each $1,000 upon their graduation.

At the school’s inaugural graduation and third matriculation ceremony held at their Ayensudo campus, the initial eight students admitted to NSBT were each presented with the cash award over the weekend.

This significant gesture marked the graduation of NSBT’s inaugural cohort of 25 students, coinciding with the admission of 90 new students.

Among the graduating class, comprising eight females and 17 males, two achieved first-class honours, 12 attained second-class upper, nine secured second-class lower, and two obtained third-class honours.

Originally envisioned as seed money for small business ventures during their studies, Dr. Nduom revealed that the plan was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Some of you graduates may recall that I made a promise to the first eight students who came here to start our institution. And that promise was to give you some money as capital to start a business while you were here on campus.

That did not happen, so today after you receive your degree, each one of you, the eight students, will receive $1000 in cash,” he stated at the graduation ceremony.

Addressing the graduates, he urged them to invest the money wisely, emphasising productive measures over transient pleasures.

“I don’t want you to use the money for drinking and eating, but to find productive measures to start a business or invest the money for the future,” he said.

Dr. Nduom reiterated the institute’s dedication to facilitating the graduates’ employment and encouraged them to stay connected with the institution.

The Rector of NSBT, Rev. Prof. Daniel Adjepong Nyarko, emphasised the school’s initiatives in forging collaborations with overseas universities, notably in the USA.

A spokesperson from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission advised the graduates to utilise their education in addressing societal challenges and pursuing employment opportunities, highlighting the adaptability of their acquired skills.

Cedis doesn’t make you a billonaire – Kasapreko Company CEO

The intriguing tale of Dr. Kwabena Adjei, president and founder of Kasapreko Company Limited, unfolds from his humble beginnings in the forest to his hustle in the city and eventually returning to his roots to build his dream mansion where he resides with his entire family, including extended relatives.

Despite his considerable wealth, Dr. Adjei chose to embrace modesty, opting to live in a retirement home nestled within a forest in Wassa Amenfi, Western Region.

This decision contrasts sharply with his numerous luxurious residential properties scattered across the country, such as the renowned ‘Signature Apartments’ in Accra.

In a candid discussion with popular Ghanaian vlogger, Wode Maya, the business tycoon reflects on his past struggles, sheds light on his present modest lifestyle, and shares his aspirations to leave behind a lasting legacy for future generations.

“For the first 13 years of my life, I was born in the forest. I had never travelled anywhere other than in the forest. It was very challenging. Because at that time, I was not even living in this cottage, (points to his mansion). I was with my mother, father, and myself in the middle of the forest. So, I used to walk about five miles each morning to come to school here. (points to the area in which he built his mansion) and after school, I went back to the middle of the forest, where I lived with my parents.

“Where I live currently is a family house I built (points to the mansion). As the head of the Aduana family, I had to relocate all my family members from the first house (a simple two storey-building) to this current place. I am an old man, I am not doing these things for myself, I just want to do something for my generation. I take care of my family’s needs. Each member of my clan. I sponsor each one of them through to the University.

I’ve set up a fund for my grandchildren so that even if their father cannot support them someday, their grandfather already has. I was so inspired by my forefathers. I live like a villager; I eat what the villagers eat. You grow your own thing and eat your own thing. (points to his farm filled with labourers). I am a village man,” he told Wode Maya.

However, despite all these, the Kasapreko Group of Companies founder insists that he is not a billionaire, “I am not a billionaire. As for wealth, I can’t say I am a rich man. I am an average man, an average person. Recently, I was in America, and they are the rich ones with dollars. So, if I have some cedis, I can’t say I am a billionaire. In Africa, aside from Dangote, who else is rich? Nobody. Who is rich in Ghana? Nobody.”

Touching on his decision to remain despite being one of the richest men in Africa, Dr. Kwabena Adjei expressed, “When the eagle wants to hunt, it studies its prey, goes direct, and picks it. I am all about being focused, not being flamboyant, and not being out there because no benefit comes with it. Not everything needs publicity, I am not a media person but sometimes you cannot hide.”

The collision involved a British Airways plane carrying 121 passengers and a Virgin Atlantic aircraft. Virgin Atlantic clarified that their empty Boeing 787-9 was being towed from the stand at Terminal 3 when the incident occurred.

The plane had just landed and was being transported to another area of the airfield when one of its wings clipped the other aircraft.

The internal strife will stop if you step down – Pastor tells NDC’s Prof. Naana Jane

Leader and founder of the Hezekiah Prayer Ministry, Apostle Kwabena Adjei, has advised Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the former President John Mahama’s running mate, to consider stepping down from her current position.

Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the man of God and numerologist suggested that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s resignation could help quell the internal strife within the party.

While acknowledging that his advice was subject to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s discretion, Apostle Adjei emphasized the significance of her potential resignation.

He referenced recent public comments by Prof. Kwesi Ahwoi, suggesting that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang should prepare for the presidency, implying a deeper significance to the situation.

Apostle Adjei cautioned that if the NDC maintains the ticket of John Mahama and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is likely to emerge as the next president.

He proposed Leslie Tamakloe as a more favorable candidate for the NDC, citing divine guidance.

However, Apostle Adjei also conveyed ominous warnings, citing prophecies suggesting potential harm to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang and others associated with the current ticket.

He emphasised the need for the NDC to heed divine guidance to secure victory in the elections.

After that, it won’t take long, and then the professor will also follow. That is why I am advising her to step down as the running mate for John Dramani Mahama,” he added.

Funny Face still in prison, a display of a ridiculous justice system! – Barker-Vormawor rants

Private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has criticised Ghana’s justice system in light of Funny Face’s case and the court’s decision to remand him into prison.

Barker-Vormawor expressed difficulty in understanding why the embattled comedian was denied bail and detained in prison while awaiting trial.

He argued that, as a recognisable public figure, Funny Face should have been granted bail with the obligation to report to the police as required.

In a Twitter post, the prominent activist questioned why Funny Face remains incarcerated, labelling the refusal to grant him bail as unfair and ridiculous.

“The fact that Funny Face is still in prison cells just shows you how ridiculous our criminal justice system is. The only reason why a judge should deny a person bail is when there is genuine uncertainty that they will not show up to stand trial.

Funny Face is a recognisable person in this country. He is not a flight risk. There is absolutely no reason why he won’t show up to stand trial.

“Why do we keep using bail as a punishment? The person is already being tried. So, the purpose of the remand is what kraa? Sometimes, I wonder what really is the interest of judges. So detached from any human empathy or even respect for the sanctity of constitutional rights. Why do I even bother? Honestly!!” he wrote in a post.

Funny Face was remanded into police custody for two weeks by the Ofaakor Circuit Court after he was hit with charges of drunk and careless driving.

    Background

On Sunday, March 24, 2024, a vehicle associated with the comedian was involved in a near-fatal accident at Kasoa, Kakraba junction in the Central Region, nearly causing harm to five individuals, including a mother and two children.

According to a comprehensive report by UTV’s Central Regional correspondent, eyewitnesses attributed the tragic incident to factors such as drunk driving and excessive speed.

A journey along the Accra-Kumasi Highway came to a sudden halt on the night of Saturday, April 6, 2024, when a group of armed robbers reportedly seized control of the road.

The robbery incident caused significant congestion on the highway near Atwedie, close to Juaso in the Asante-Akim South District.
Footage of the event depicted numerous vehicles, including VIP buses, stranded on the road, with some passengers standing outside in a state of helplessness.

Others appeared visibly terrified and distressed, unsure of what was unfolding.
An eyewitness who captured the scene on video, shared widely on social media, noted that the police were present at the location, attempting to intervene and halt the robbery.

“Some armed robbers just took over the Kumasi-Accra and we are all stranded now not knowing what to do. Some police officers just arrived a few minutes ago. They have gone to the other side to see what is happening,” the eyewitness narrated.

Just over a month ago, a similar incident unfolded on the same stretch of road when passengers aboard the ‘2M Express’ bus fell victim to an armed robbery attack.

Following the balloting for the New Patriotic Party’s primaries, Nyantakyi, speaking to the media, interprets his placement at number 7 on the ballot as a sign that he is the ideal candidate to represent Ejisu in parliament.

Drawing a parallel, Nyantakyi likens his ballot position to the renowned footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who famously wore the number 7 jersey for Manchester United and Real Madrid, suggesting his readiness to lead Ejisu with distinction.

“I had indicated to you all on the day I submitted my form that I was the Cristiano Ronaldo of Ejisu and God has perfected it,” he said.

He also maintained that the number 7 biblically represents hard work, dedication, and excellence which are all virtues he would be bringing on board to help the people of Ejisu.

“The number seven jersey number I took represents my brilliance, eloquence, hard work, and excellence in football as we transfer into politics. God spent six days to create the world and rested on the 7th day. And so, it means that my coming signifies that the people of Ejisu will take a rest whilst I assume or continue the hard work for them,” he said.

Kwesi Nyantakyi reiterated, “In philosophy, seven also means wisdom, truthfulness, hard work, intellectuality, etc. And so, if you are not an intelligent man, or a hard-working or a wise person, you are not associated with seven”.

    About the Ejisu by-election:

The Ejisu Constituency seat became vacant following the sudden demise of the sitting Member of Parliament, John Kumah.

The rich man ‘hiding’ in the forest ; story of Kasapreko CEO, Dr. Kwabena Adjei

The intriguing tale of Dr. Kwabena Adjei, president and founder of Kasapreko Company Limited, unfolds from his humble beginnings in the forest to his hustle in the city and eventually returning to his roots to build his dream mansion, where he resides with his entire family, including extended relatives.

Arrest all of them – Franklin Cudjoe to Ghana Police on people involved in rot in Scholarship Secretariat

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has alerted the Ghana Police Service to the corruption within the Scholarship Secretariat.

He emphasized the need for the police to apprehend individuals involved in fraudulent activities and investigate them thoroughly for cheating the country.

Cudjoe conveyed this message through a post on social media.

“Is the Ghana Police listening to the horror stories about the scholarship secretariat? They need to pick up some people,” he said.

Last Week Fourth Estate released an investigation into the rot at the Scholarship secretariat. From the investigation, some “well-to-do” persons in Ghana were given scholarships to study for Masters programs outside Ghana.

While many Ghanaians struggled to secure even a single scholarship, certain individuals managed to secure scholarships on two separate occasions.

This scandal has sparked numerous discussions on social media, with many Ghanaians voicing their concerns and calling for reforms at the Secretariat.

  • “It’s not the same game, it’s not the same players” – Benzema to critics over goalless streak in Saudi

Karim Benzema has hit back at critics of his performances since moving to Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad, saying he needs help and can’t win games alone.

The former Ballon d’Or winner became one of several high-profile names to move to Saudi Arabia last summer after ending a trophy-laden 14-year spell with Real Madrid.

However, he has managed just nine goals in 20 league games in his first season in Saudi. Al Ittihad, last season’s champions, sit a distant fourth in the standings, 30 points behind leaders Al Hilal.

Asked after Al Ittihad’s 0-0 draw with Al Taawoun Friday why fans weren’t seeing the same Benzema as at Real Madrid, Benzema told Action with Walid: “Because it’s not the same game, it’s not the same players.

“I need help on the pitch, I can’t win one game alone. I need another player, I need a lot of things. But it’s different, it’s my first season in Saudi. I hope I finish the season well, I hope I win. That’s it.”

According to ESPN, last summer, Benzema, 36, inked a lucrative three-year contract with Al Ittihad valued at €400 million.

However, ESPN disclosed that Benzema explored potential options during the January transfer window due to a lackluster initial six months in Jeddah.

Although the former France international understood the slim chances of Al Ittihad releasing him, he contemplated a return to Europe.

ESPN sources revealed that both Chelsea and his hometown club Lyon expressed interest in acquiring Benzema.

Benzema boasts an impressive track record, having netted 354 goals for Madrid in 648 appearances, and clinched a record 25 trophies, including four LaLiga titles, five Champions Leagues, and numerous other honours.

  • Lionel Messi scores just 12 minutes into game after injury come back

Lionel Messi scores just 12 minutes into game after injury come back

Lionel Messi made a stunning comeback for Inter Miami, scoring just 12 minutes after coming off the substitutes’ bench in a 2-2 draw against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday.

The Argentine star, sidelined with injury since March 13, made his return at halftime at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His first-time deflected shot found the back of the net off the post, bringing Miami level at 1-1.

This goal marked Messi’s fifth in five games across all competitions this season. Just three minutes later, he played a key role in Leo Alfonso’s goal, giving Miami a 2-1 lead over the visitors.

However, despite their efforts, Miami couldn’t maintain the lead, as Cole Bassett equalized for Colorado in the 88th minute.

“The usual [with Messi] in what he provokes in our team, in the rival and in the fans,” Miami boss Gerardo “Tata” Martino said in his postgame news conference. “The most important thing is that he felt comfortable, he felt good and loose playing.

“That’s why it is a shame to let go of two points. I think we continue making errors that make us lose points.”

Despite training regularly with the rest of the squad leading up to the Major League Soccer clash, Messi’s participation remained uncertain just 24 hours before kickoff.

“Messi’s evolution is exactly as we planned it,” Martino added. “We knew there was a risk for him to play against Monterrey on Wednesday, but it was planned that he would play minutes today. We were between 30 and 45, and he felt good.

“This helps to reach the second leg against Monterrey with more confidence, especially in relation to his injury.”

Miami heads to Monterrey, Mexico, for the return leg on Wednesday down 2-1 from the first match but with Martino hopeful of having Messi involved.

“The idea is that Messi does play on Wednesday,” he said. “But he just played 45 minutes, though we understand the requirements expected from us in the second leg. The most important thing is that he’s back, he felt good, scored a goal and participated in the second. That’s the most outstanding part.”

  • Chief Justice reopens Court of Appeal across the nation

Chief Justice reopens Court of Appeal across the nation

Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, has reopened the Court of Appeal in other parts of the country.

Previously, apart from Accra, the Court of Appeal used to sit in Kumasi, Tamale, Ho, Koforidua and Cape Coast to deliver justice pertaining to other parts of the country, but such arrangements were put on hold when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

With the reopening, apart from Accra, the Court of Appeal will sit in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Koforidua in the Eastern Region and Sekondi in the Western Region.

Justice Torkornoo announced this during an interaction with the Judicial Press Corps at the Law Court Complex in Accra last Thursday.

    Commencement

The Chief Justice said administrative procedures had been put in place to ensure that the reopened courts commenced operations during the latter part of this month.

“A lot of consultation has gone into all these decisions. We have spoken with Parliament, the Bar and other stakeholders to arrive at this,” she said.

Justice Torkornoo further explained that the reopening of the Court of Appeal was part of continuous efforts by the judiciary to bring justice closer to people.

“Justice is a product of people of Ghana. Law is made by the people of Ghana; it is only administered by the judiciary, and therefore, we must take all steps to bring justice closer to people,” she said.

The Chief Justice announced that the Court of Appeal in Kumasi will cater to the legal needs of the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Western North regions. Additionally, virtual court sessions will be conducted for the six northern regions.

“The Court of Appeal for the northern regions will be reopened by a satellite registry in Tamale, and cases will be heard virtually from Kumasi,” she said.

Justice Torkornoo elaborated that due to the deteriorating condition of the Cape Coast court complex, the Court of Appeal in Cape Coast has been relocated to Sekondi. Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal in Koforidua will now handle cases for the Eastern, Oti, and Volta regions.

Regarding the new Court Shift System (CSS) being piloted in Accra, Justice Torkornoo clarified that its purpose is to alleviate the caseload in courts and improve justice delivery. Under this system, selected courts will operate morning and afternoon sessions, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. respectively.

The courts participating in the CSS include the two High Courts at Adentan, Amasaman High Court One, Circuit Court at Weija, District Court at La, District Court at Teshie, two District Courts at Madina, and Nsawam High Court.

Justice Torkornoo highlighted that the CSS was introduced to address the imbalance in caseloads, with some courts burdened with up to 1,000 cases while others had fewer than 30 cases.

“Those judges with few cases are hardly doing any work, not because they do not want to work but because the people in their jurisdictions are not bringing many disputes to court,” she said.

  • Community Pharmacists to offer services under NHIS

Community Pharmacists to offer services under NHIS

Community Practice Pharmacists Association (CPPA) has unveiled a collaborative effort with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to expand healthcare accessibility by accrediting One Thousand Community Pharmacies nationwide.

This announcement came during a CPPA Virtual General Meeting under the theme “Providing Quality Care Through Health Insurance.”

The objective of this initiative is to enhance healthcare access for both Ghanaian residents and visitors. By accrediting community pharmacies, the aim is to elevate the quality of healthcare services, aligning with NHIA’s mission to establish a sustainable, progressive, and equitable social health insurance scheme.

Emmanuel Kwaku Ireland, Chairman of CPPA, highlighted that the initiative seeks to offer financial risk protection for Ghanaians against the costs of essential healthcare services.

He underscored that this endeavor would ensure public access to prescribed medications covered by NHIS, along with comprehensive education on proper medication dosage.

“The collaboration would also enhance access to quality healthcare by creating a sustainable, progressive, and equitable social health insurance to the persons covered by the Scheme,” Dr Ireland explained.

Giving the keynote address, Deputy CEO of the NHIA, Dr Mrs Yaa Pokuaa Baiden, highlighted her outfit’s readiness to collaborate with stakeholders in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system, emphasizing the importance of granting credentials to facilities based on predetermined industry standards.

“For The Authority to attain this objective, we continuously work in collaboration with relevant agencies especially those involved in Ghana’s health delivery system. The overarching objective of all these collaborations is to ensure that healthcare providers operating under the Scheme implement policies that guarantee quality basic healthcare to members of a Scheme.

These policies include granting credentials to facilities, undertaking service utilization reviews at these facilities, and sometimes technology assessments.” Dr Baiden indicated.

She added, “In granting credentials, the Authority assesses facilities against predetermined industry standards. These standards are determined by a team of experts across Ghana’s Health Sector. In line with changes that occur in our industry, the Authority reviews the credentialing standards every five years.

This is to ensure that the standards based on which credentials are granted are abreast with changes in the industry. Credentialing application is currently online only.”

Furthermore, she revealed that by the end of 2023, only around 140 out of the nation’s 5,300 pharmacies had enrolled to provide services under the NHIS.

Expressing concern over this low level of participation, she urged more pharmacies to join and collaborate with the Scheme. She emphasized the improved payment of claims since 2020 as an incentive for participation.

Akua Donkor promises journalists cars if voted into power

Founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, has pledged to supply vehicles to journalists if she emerges victorious in the 2024 general elections.

Highlighting the pivotal role of the media in national development, she assured that addressing journalists’ needs and challenges would be a top priority for her administration.

Additionally, Donkor expressed confidence in her ability to win the presidential elections and succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo when his term ends.

In an interview with Roselyn Felli on JoyPrime TV, monitored by GhanaWeb, Akua Donkor outlined her plans for journalists should she attain her presidential aspirations.

“When Akufo-Addo leaves office, I will take over. When I come into power, I will provide journalists with cars, but it will not be everyone. I will give every station a vehicle, regardless of whether they have one or not. I am saying this because media work is very important to the nation.”

The GFP presidential candidate will be competing with the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama; and other candidates of the various political parties.

Airport in Cape Coast is going to be “useless” – Kwami Sefa Kayi

Renowned broadcast journalist and host of Peace FM’s Kokrookoo morning show Kwami Sefa Kayi, known as “Chairman General,” has expressed scepticism about the feasibility of constructing an airport in Cape Coast.

The host of Ghana’s popular morning show “Kokrokoo” on Peace FM shared his views on the proposed airport for Cape Coast in the Central Region.

In 2021, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo pledged to build an international airport in the Central Regional capital, with feasibility studies reportedly nearing completion.

Further details about the project emerged in 2023, revealing plans for the airport to include the first aircraft repair center in West Africa.

Located near Komenda in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) Municipality, the project aims to serve the entire sub-region with its aircraft repair center, positioning it as a significant aviation hub in West Africa.

But to Chairman General, “Building an airport in Cape Coast is a useless venture. Look, it will be as useless as the Ho airport”.

He categorically said this on his show Thursday morning.

  • The value is the same – NPP responds to ‘fears’ over Alan, Abu Sakara merger

The value is the same – NPP responds to ‘fears’ over Alan, Abu Sakara merger

New Patriotic Party (NPP) contends that the coalition between the Movement for Change (M4C) and the National Interest Movement (NIM) will have minimal impact on their electoral prospects in the December 2024 elections.

Deputy General Secretary of the party, Haruna Mohammed, argues that each party would have garnered votes independently, rendering the alliance inconsequential.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on April 5, he said, “Come to think about it, these parties that are coming together would have contested the elections anyway. They would have contested in their own strength and they would have garnered the same votes as they were going to get.

“It is just like if you have 2+2+2 that is 6, if you decide to separate all the two to stand alone, it doesn’t change the numbers. If they come together, it is going to still give them the numbers that they would have gotten in the larger political discourse in terms of the contest.”

Haruna’s remarks came after a joint statement on April 4 by M4C’s Alan Kyerematen and NIM’s Dr. Abu Sakara Foster, announcing the formation of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC) following successful negotiations with various political factions.

The ARC aims to challenge the traditional dominance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP.

However, Haruna emphasised that while the NPP wasn’t overly concerned about the potential impact of this alliance on their electoral prospects, they remained committed to rallying these supporters for their cause.

Their goal is to secure political power in the upcoming 2024 elections.

“Notwithstanding that, we are not going to leave any stone unturned in terms of having engagement and making sure that we are able to get some of the smaller political parties to our side,” he said.

During the same program, Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, expressed his view that the new alliance serves to enhance and strengthen the country’s democracy.

Henry Quartey warns Immigration officers – No escorting friends in uniforms at KIA or face dismissal

Interior Minister Henry Quartey issued a stern warning to immigration officials stationed at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) against the practice of escorting or receiving friends at the airport.

He emphasised that any Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer found to be violating this directive would face immediate dismissal.

During his visit to the GIS headquarters in Accra on Thursday, April 4, Mr. Quartey expressed his disappointment with the conduct observed among some officers.

He highlighted instances where officers in uniform were seen assisting friends through immigration and security checkpoints, a practice he deemed unacceptable.

“Men and women wear uniforms only to go and see off their friends at the Airport. They pull their bags right from the car and walk through checking, immigration, and even security points all the way.

“You see them lined up waiting for their friends, they take their bags. I have told the CG to send a message to them that it has to stop with immediate effect, and I mean immediate effect.

“We will send plain clothes to go there. If an immigration officer is found around the arrival hall or departure hall, engaging passengers, please consider that you will be at home for a long time, and that will be coming from me, not the CG. So, tell them,” myjoyonline.com quoted him to have said during his visit to the headquarters.

“He will go straight to hell” – Butcher ‘curses’ Bawumia-Akufo-Addo govt over meat price hike

A tweet from user @KyeiMeshack on X (formerly Twitter) captures a butcher expressing frustration over the current state of the economy and the rising prices of mutton, chevon, and beef.

Responding to a customer’s inquiry about the soaring meat prices, the butcher attributed the situation to what he described as the incompetence of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer and vice president, as well as the mismanagement of the economy by the Akufo-Addo government.

Expressing dismay over the drastic price hike, the butcher highlighted the significant increase in the cost of meat, from GHS 16 per pound in 2016 to the current price of GHS 30.

“Thanks to Nana Addo and Bawumia’s lies. The lies are now getting out of hand. Its too much. A pound of boneless in 2026 was 12 cedis but today it is 30 cedis”, he fumed.

He directed his anger towards Vice President Bawumia, accusing him of deceiving Ghanaians with numerous false promises and policies.

He said, “In 2016, you would get a well-looking cow at GHS 1000 but today it is a whopping GHS 10k and even more. Nana and Bawumia have messed up big time, they have destroyed the economy completely.”.

He expressed his willingness to judge Bawumia and Akufo-Addo:

“If God doesn’t judge them well, he should allow me to judge him, he tells lies too much. His bald head is like the sole of someone’s shoe. He will go straight to hell” he stated.

Sefwi Akontombra youth seize about 4 tanks of diesel belonging to galamsey operators

Some angry youth of Sefwi Akontombra have allegedly intercepted and seized about four tanks of diesel being transported to an illegal small-scale mining site in their community in a bid to bar galamsey.

This was sighted in a tweet shared by @eddie_wrt on April 6, 2024.

A background voice reporting the incident in the video asserted that the youth made this move as part of efforts to fight the menace of galamsey, such as the destruction of water bodies coupled with its health-related conditions.

Chants by women were “We want our water back”!, with some suggesting that, the stopper of the tanks be opened while they journey with the driver to report the case to case at the Esaanse police station.

During an attempt by the videographer to interview the driver of the intercepted truck, he clarified that they were not engaged in illegal mining (galamsey), but were timber contractors en route to Esaanse.

However, an irate resident intervened and forcefully escorted him away, instructing him to report the incident to the police station.

Honour John Kumah, leave Ejisu seat for NPP -Chairman Wontumi tells NDC

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has issued a heartfelt plea to all political factions, notably the primary opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging them to abstain from participating in the upcoming by-election in the Ejisu Constituency.

Chairman Wontumi emphasized the paramount importance of paying homage to the late MP of the constituency, John Kumah. He stressed that Kumah’s profound legacy and dedicated service to both the Ejisu Constituency and the nation merit profound recognition and respect.

In light of this, Chairman Wontumi called upon all constituents to unite in solidarity, striving to uphold the late MP’s honor by ensuring that the by-election seat remains uncontested by competing political entities.

“All the constituents of Ejisu should help us send a signal to the NDC that we are serious. If it is possible, they (NDC) shouldn’t contest. But if they want to contest, we will turn our seriousness into a vote for the NPP for them to see that we love John by showing love to his replacement,” Chairman Wontumi asserted.

The NPP stalwart acknowledged the party’s confidence in securing victory in the upcoming by-election. However, he urged other political parties to carefully weigh the broader implications of their participation in the electoral process.

“We are left with only 8 months to the general elections. Even though the NPP will win, if you want to contest, we will do our campaign to win massively.
“It will be nice for both sides to see that we are using this by-election in honour of John Kumah,” he added.

West Ham United has honored Mohammed Kudus’ remarkable solo effort against Freiburg in the Europa League as the standout goal for the month of March.

Kudus scored his first goal of the match during the 5-0 victory at the London Stadium on Thursday, March 14, 2024, where he eventually netted a brace. This win propelled West Ham to the quarter-final stage of the competition.

In a Twitter post, Mr. Ntim Fordjour argued that former President Mahama’s criticisms are hypocritical, pointing out a past instance where Mahama himself made a similar promise.

Ntim Fordjour highlighted a campaign event during the 2016 general elections where Mahama pledged the same initiative to students.

He emphasised that Mahama has no moral authority to condemn the NPP when he himself had previously made such promises.

Sharing a video clip of Mahama’s previous pledge, Ntim Fordjour stressed that Mahama’s recent remarks regarding the ‘free tablet initiative’ only reflect his desperation.

“How could desperate hunger for power cause one to embarrass himself this way? Same Mahama then and now on 1 Student 1 tablet.

He promised it in 2016 and now condemns same in 2024??” he posted together with the video on Twitter on Friday, April 6, 2024,

What Mahama said about distributing tablets to SHS students

Mahama’s promise, which he made in September 2016, was that textbooks for the various core subjects will be converted into the software which will be put on tablets and distributed to Junior High and Senior High School students.

“Students will receive tablets that have all their core subjects on the tablet. If the pilot is successful, the programme shall be expanded,” he is quoted to have said in a report by peaceonline.com

Mahama’s recent comments about NPP’s promise to give students laptops:

During a special public lecture at Wisconsin International University College in Accra, John Mahama expressed his concerns, pointing out the government’s neglect of crucial ongoing educational projects in favor of prioritizing tablet distribution.

The former president underscored the significance of allocating state resources to address more pressing needs within the education sector.

“You bring a new curriculum, the children have [had] no textbooks in basic schools for the last four years, and you think that giving pre-tertiary students tablets is more important. Of course, everybody knows the political expediency,” he said in a report by citinewsroom.com.

Mahama also expressed skepticism regarding the timing of the tablet distribution, suggesting it is an attempt to sway the votes of pre-tertiary students who will soon be eligible to vote.

“The pre-tertiary students are going to register in May because some of them will be turning 18 years and above; some are 18 already, and they are going to be the ones voting. So, this is a gift to entice them to vote for the current government,” he stated.

Mahama also condemned the allocation of GH¢1.3 billion for providing laptops to pre-tertiary students, arguing that other pressing issues within the educational system require attention.

“Otherwise, if you are using GH¢1.3 billion to give pre-tertiary students laptops, our priority would have been different. Other things are begging for funding in our educational system than those laptops. But it is a bribe for them to vote for this government,” he reiterated.

‘Radical’ Dampare is under attack; some corrupt police officers want him gone leader – A Plus

Kwame Asare Obeng, better known as ‘A Plus’, has asserted that Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare is facing a barrage of betrayals and attacks from within his own ranks.

According to the social commentator and politician, certain high-ranking members of the police force are disgruntled because Dampare, known for his firm stance against corruption, poses a threat to their illicit activities.

A Plus suggests that these individuals, who view Dampare as a challenge, are often the orchestrators of various misconducts within the police service, including those perpetrated by lower-ranking personnel.

He made these statements while highlighting his relationship with the IGP during an interview with KSM, “People are attacking Dampare because there has been so much rot in the police service and they have never experienced such a radical leader like him.

He is trying to ensure that the police are doing police work.

“He wants to ensure that you can’t be standing by the roadside taking one-cedi bribes. So, when he came, there were some officers up there who were part of that. He couldn’t trust them to deal with that, so he brought a new crop of policemen out there checking on everyone.

Now they are crying that the small boys are not respecting the big men. If you are a big man and you’re a thief, nobody will respect you.”

He continued, “Alex Mensah and his team are people I don’t trust. They just want to get him out so they can have their way. These situations happen to everyone.

It happens to people in high places who choose to do the right thing. Every time, an agenda is set against people who do the right thing.”

A Plus, however, rallied support for the IGP and the likes of the Special Prosecutor and Chief Justice, who, according to him, are ‘doing the Lord’s work’.

“Good people need people to support them. So, you cannot talk ill about the special prosecutor, the Chief Justice, and the IGP to me. I know them and these are people who mean well,” he stressed.

Manhyia rep confirms Otumfuo has donated $5 million towards the KATH project

Representative at the Manhyia Palace, Nana Poku Bra, has confirmed that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has generously donated five million dollars to the ‘Heal the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’ initiative.

The revelation came during a discussion with Omanhene Adu Boakye of Sompa FM, who sought clarification on the matter from palace representatives.

The conversation about Otumfuo’s donation arose while discussing plans for the celebration of the Asantehene’s 25th year of reign.

The host of Sompa FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ show said, “We are told that the Asantehene donated 5 million dollars. 5million dollars!”

Nana Poku Bra responded, “Yes his personal support.”

Intrigued by the confirmation, Omanhene Adu Boakye continued, “Do you know the worth of one million dollars in cedis? It’s 130 billion Ghana cedis. So, multiply this by five.”

The host continued by addressing individuals who have criticised the Asantehene for seeking funds to renovate the hospital instead of fully financing it himself.

He argued that no traditional leader in Ghana has the capacity to single-handedly fund such a large-scale project. He emphasised that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is fulfilling his role as a respected leader by seeking contributions to support the initiative.

“If a king of this calibre is talking, then people are criticising him. How many people can donate this amount? Which kingdom in Ghana? Then some clueless people will be claiming that the Asantehene is begging for funds to establish the project,” he stated

The Manhyia rep, who concurred with Omanhene’s statement added, “Otumfuo is capable of building that hospital alone. It’s just a nice thing to see others support.”

    KATH donations yielding results

Head of the Public Affairs Department,Kwame Frimpong, revealed that the hospital has raised half of the estimated $10 million required for the renovation project.

He emphasized that the appeal for support made by the Asantehene to renovate the 70-year-old Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has been effective, with both individuals and corporate entities continuing to contribute to the cause. Mr. Frimpong made this disclosure following a donation of 300,000 Ghana cedis by the private institution OFI Ghana to support the initiative.

Video: Abesim youth clash with alleged executioners

A clash erupted between alleged executioners from the Sunyani Traditional Council and the youth of Abesim, a town in the Sunyani Municipal District of the Bono Region, resulting in the executioners fleeing for safety.

According to reports, the clash began when the executioners visited the community to solicit money and items from market women.

The youth accused them of extortion, claiming they were collecting funds and goods for the funeral of the late Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, who passed away in July 2022.

In videos shared by EDHUB, the supposed executioners were seen fleeing as the enraged youth of Abesim pursued them.

One of the executioners brandished a weapon as he was vigorously chased by the youth in a pickup truck.

Meanwhile, the traditional burial rites for Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II began on April 1, 2024, and are scheduled to conclude on April 7, 2024.

As part of the ceremonies, a one-month ban on noise-making, including drumming, has been imposed in the Sunyani Municipality from March 11 to April 9, 2024.

Additionally, public events such as funerals, preaching on the main streets, and social gatherings have been restricted during this period.

The Alan-Abu Sakara pairing can force 2024 election into a runoff – Asah-Asante

Political Analyst, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, suggests that alliance between Alan Kyerematen, Leader of the Movement for Change, and former CPP flagbearer Dr. Abu Sakara, could potentially force Ghana’s presidential election on December 7th into a runoff, contingent upon their ability to garner widespread support from voters.

In a press release issued on Thursday, April 4, 2024, Alan Kyerematen announced the collaboration between his Movement and Dr. Sakara’s National Interest Movement (NIM), operating under the banner of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change.

Their overarching objective is to unite Ghanaians from diverse backgrounds, with a particular focus on engaging youth and women, to elect an independent candidate as the President of Ghana.

In an interview with Starr News, Dr. Asah-Asante observed that both Alan Kyerematen and Dr. Abu Sakara are intellectuals well-versed in the challenges facing the nation.

He expressed confidence in their leadership abilities and their potential to mobilize any credible group towards achieving their goals.

“I have no doubt in my mind that they are a force to be reckoned with. I will not have any doubt in my mind that one day they will graduate to that end, where they will come together and forge ahead.

“For me, Alan is a giant. If you look at the Ashanti Region, Central Region, and Eastern Region, I have no doubt that he can cause a stir there.

“Abu Sakara, another fantastic man who has ideas and can also articulate his ideas clearly, has full knowledge of what is happening in this country.

“So the two, if they are able to tie their apron strings together, can cause an upset. Not an upset to win the election but if they get the support of other political parties and if they also perform creditably well, they can also push the election to a second round.”

Rodents, reptiles, others find new home in the about GHC 28m Komenda Sugar Factory site

Komenda Sugar Factory premises have become a habitat for grasscutters and a breeding ground for reptiles, as neglect and abandonment have taken their toll on the once-promising facility.

Constructed during the tenure of NDC’s John Dramani Mahama, the factory, which was on the brink of completion, now languishes in decay amidst overgrown vegetation.

Initially projected to provide employment for over 700 unemployed youth in Komenda and neighbouring areas, the factory now stands as a symbol of broken promises and unfulfilled potential.

EIB Network’s Central Regional Correspondent, Yaw Boagyan, visited the factory and witnessed firsthand the grim state of affairs. Machinery lies rusted and broken, while the factory’s roofing sheets are torn, further exacerbating its deterioration.

The sugarcane fields intended to feed the factory now lie neglected, overrun by weeds and scavenged by local residents for sustenance.

Disillusionment prevails among the community, with residents expressing deep disappointment in the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government for its failure to revive the factory.

They lament the missed opportunity for economic empowerment and vow to withhold their support from the NPP in the upcoming general election, citing their dashed hopes for a better future.

Residents of Komenda express deep disappointment in former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, who hails from the area, for his perceived failure to operationalize the abandoned sugar factory during his tenure.

In a bizarre turn of events, the factory was briefly opened for operation in 2023 during a visit by Alan Kyerematen, only to be shut down again just three days later, leaving the community perplexed and frustrated.

Faced with the prospect of continued neglect, residents voice their intention to throw their support behind the NDC in the upcoming elections, citing the party’s role in initiating the factory’s establishment.

They express hope that the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who hails from Komenda, will champion efforts to complete and operationalize the facility.

While the government has hinted at negotiations to revive the factory, residents also highlight the urgent need for improved infrastructure, particularly the deplorable state of the area’s roads, which further compounds their plight.

Kumasi Market women donate GHC 22k to Otumfuo’s Heal KATH

Market women in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, have demonstrated remarkable generosity by collectively donating GH¢220,000 to support Otumfuo’s Heal Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) initiative.

The contribution was a collaborative effort from various markets within the region. Kejetia, Central, and Abinkyi markets contributed GH¢100,000, while Bantama, Race Course, and Suame markets donated GH¢120,000.

In a significant display of solidarity, Nana Yaa Fowaa, the Market Queen of Kejetia, and Nana Kyeiwaa, the Market Queen of Bantama, led the women in presenting a symbolic cheque to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace on April 4, 2024.

The market women expressed their commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare services within their community.

Their gesture is intended to complement efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and access to quality medical care at institutions like KATH.

The Heal KTAH initiative, spearheaded by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, seeks to raise $10 million for the renovation of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

This fundraising initiative was officially launched on Sunday, October 15, 2023, during the Akwasidae festival.

The mobilization of funds aims to address the pressing need for infrastructural improvements at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital, which serves as a referral center for 12 out of the 16 regions in Ghana.

Fuel price to soon exceed GHC 17 – COPEC announces

Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has forecasted that fuel prices will soon surpass either GH¢16 or GH¢17.

This prediction comes after Nana Amoasi VII, the Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), also anticipated a significant increase in fuel prices in the upcoming weeks during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show (CBS) on Citi FM.

This recent surge in fuel prices marks the largest increase since February 2023, when a litre of fuel was priced at GH¢15.40 and diesel at GH¢15.50.

During a conversation with Selorm Adonoo on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday, Mr. Amoah indicated that the trends in the international market price and the performance of the Cedi suggest an imminent increment in fuel prices.

“We are widely exposed, and the signals as far as international market price movement and the cedi’s performance is concerned don’t look too good and sooner than later fuel will cross [GH¢]16, [GH¢]17 in no time,” he stated.

Fuel consumers in Ghana are preparing for higher prices following the National Petroleum Authority’s (NPA) decision to reverse the suspension of the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy on petroleum products.

On April 3, 2024, the NPA issued a directive to stakeholders in the oil marketing and distribution sector, instructing them to apply additional charges: 16 pesewas per litre for Petrol, 14 pesewas per litre for Diesel, and 14 pesewas for every kilogram of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Consequently, GOIL, the state-owned Oil Marketing Company, has adjusted its prices. As of April 4, 2024, petrol and diesel are now priced at GH¢14.15 per litre and GH¢14.74 per litre, respectively.

Arsenal’s Zinchenko says he will join Ukrainian troops in fight against Russia

Arsenal full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko has stated that he would willingly return to Ukraine to defend his country if called upon.

The 27-year-old has already made a substantial donation of £1 million ($1.26 million) to aid those affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Asked by BBC’s Newsnight whether he would answer a call-up, Zinchenko said: “I think it’s a clear answer. I would go.”
He said several of his former school friends had already joined the Ukrainian military.

“It’s tough to understand that just recently we’ve been in the same school, we were playing in the playground or on the football pitch, and now they have to defend our country,” he said. “Honestly, [it’s] so hard to accept this, but it is what it is. We cannot give up.”

This week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy signed a bill reducing the mobilisation age for combat duty to 25 from 27.

Zinchenko initially launched his career in Russia with Ufa before transferring to Manchester City in 2016, where he secured four Premier League titles. His move to Arsenal in July 2022 came with a transfer fee estimated at around £35 million.

Additionally, Zinchenko mentioned that he maintains minimal contact with his former Russian teammates.

“Since the invasion really few [have] texted me and sent me some messages and I can’t blame them because this is not their fault,” he said. “I cannot tell them, ‘Guys, do the protests outside and all these things’, because I know they can be [put] in prison.”

  • Champions League: Ten Hag bemoans “expensive” loss of point by club in stoppage time

Champions League: Ten Hag bemoans “expensive” loss of point by club in stoppage time

Erik ten Hag has acknowledged that securing qualification for next season’s Champions League will pose a significant challenge for Manchester United following a costly week.

United experienced setbacks by conceding stoppage-time goals in both a 1-1 draw against Brentford on Saturday and a dramatic 4-3 loss to Chelsea on Thursday.

These results saw them drop five points from winning positions within a span of six days.

As a result, Ten Hag’s team now finds themselves 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa and nine points behind Tottenham in fifth. With only eight games remaining, Champions League qualification appears increasingly difficult for United.

Moreover, England’s potential allocation of one of UEFA’s performance spots for the expanded 2024-25 competition further complicates the situation.

“In this week we have dropped five points in stoppage time and that is very expensive,” Ten Hag said.

“The points are getting more expensive because the games are running out; we know that. We have to catch up and we are many points behind so it will be difficult but we will keep fighting and I’m sure you’ve seen our team has character.

“They showed [against Chelsea] they are resilient and I’m sure they will go on Sunday and fight against Liverpool.”

Following their defeat at Stamford Bridge, Manchester United now face a daunting challenge as they aim to regain momentum when title-contending Liverpool visit Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ten Hag emphasised the need for his players to swiftly overcome the disappointment from the Chelsea game and hopes they will channel their emotions positively by approaching the match against Jürgen Klopp’s team with determination and a sense of urgency.

“First I have to deal with this, but I will say we can’t deal with this for long, we have to recover very quickly and turn this around,” Ten Hag said.

“From Friday on I will be in a positive mood, we have to be looking forward and take energy. You can take a lot of energy from being angry and that is how we have to do it.”

Ten Hag also addressed his decision to bench Marcus Rashford for the game at Chelsea. The England forward struggled to make an impact after coming on midway through the second half but Ten Hag insists he has no problem with the 26-year-old’s form.

“Lately his form is progressing,” Ten Hag said.“He has big motivation because he wants to be successful with us , win trophies and score goals.

He wants to win trophies and contribute and we still have a chance in the FA Cup and he wants to fight for the Champions League spot.

The Euros are coming so I would say motivation should be high and the form is momentum and we can always change momentum.

“Lately he scored; before Brentford he scored three goals in three games.”

  • I played with my reputation in my move to Chelsea – Pochettino

I played with my reputation in my move to Chelsea – Pochettino

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged that he took a significant risk by accepting the position at the club.

However, he believes that the supporters are now ready to move past his association with Tottenham Hotspur.

In a remarkable turn of events, Cole Palmer’s stoppage-time hat-trick secured Chelsea’s victory over Manchester United, marking the latest-ever Premier League comeback.

The exhilarating win sparked scenes of jubilation at Stamford Bridge, with goals in the 100th and 101st minutes sealing the dramatic turnaround.

Pochettino celebrated passionately at the final whistle, considering it a pivotal moment in his efforts to win over parts of the Chelsea fanbase who were initially skeptical about his appointment.

Having spent five-and-a-half years in charge of Tottenham, he understood the reservations surrounding his arrival at Chelsea.

Acknowledging the gamble he took in accepting the job, Pochettino recognized the challenges ahead in reshaping Chelsea following their recent takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

“You need to convince [supporters]. I arrived to Chelsea in a different project to what it was in the last 20 years. I play with my reputation to come here also in a project that is to build a team with young talented players. Given the possibility, the potential, and the top players.

“We knew it was a massive challenge to build a team, to win games, to be competitive and to take the risk with the fans. I am not going to be populist.

“I said from the beginning, I want to build a genuine relationship, not to kiss the badge or to do stupid things on the touchline to win the benefit of the fans.

“What I want is to provide to the team the tools to win games and through the trust in the team of winning games, to believe in ourselves and trust to build a very good relationship. I am not here to be populist or a hypocrite and say ‘I love the fans’ because I know it is always about trying to build this relationship.

“Today for me, I am so happy, not only for the three points or maybe the performance was better than Manchester United. But for me it is the first time that I start to feel the connection between the team and the fans.

That is going to be a really helpful for us in the season. It is really important.”

Chelsea’s victory over Manchester United propelled them to 10th place on the table, trailing seventh-placed West Ham by two points with two games in hand.

While qualification for a European competition remains within reach, with an FA Cup semifinal against Manchester City presenting an alternative path, Pochettino is optimistic about Chelsea’s chances.

He believes that a flawless run-in, commencing with Sunday’s visit to bottom-placed Sheffield United, can secure their spot in European competition.

“Nine games to play still, If we win all the games, for sure we will be in Europe,” Pochettino said.

“For now, it is about Sheffield, the most important game.”

Rubiales denies engagement in Saudi dealings amidst corruption probe

Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has denied allegations that his decision to relocate the Spanish Supercopa to Saudi Arabia was influenced by his personal business interests.

Rubiales was detained and briefly questioned by police upon his arrival in Madrid from the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

He is under investigation as part of a corruption probe related to a lucrative three-year deal made by the RFEF with the Saudi sports authority in 2019 to host the competition in Saudi Arabia.

“I have never had business in Saudi Arabia,” Rubiales told La Sexta TV prior to his return to Spain. “It’s a lie that I have land to build hotels in Saudi Arabia, which is what is being reported.”

Rubiales further refuted allegations of receiving illegal commissions during his tenure as the head of the Spanish Football Federation (FA).

The corruption and money laundering investigation also encompasses contracts signed by the Spanish FA for the renovation of Seville’s La Cartuja stadium. This stadium is set to host Saturday’s Copa del Rey final and serves as the venue for various other international games.

“Never [received payments],” Rubiales said. “The money in my accounts is the product of my work and my savings.”

Former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué’s sports entertainment company, Kosmos, was involved in the deal with the federation and Saudi Arabia.

“It was Kosmos that brought Saudi Arabia [offer],” Rubiales said. “We chose the better offer.

“The Qatar option was never an offer. I have not received a bribe from Piqué. He has neither offered me anything nor have I taken anything.”

In 2022, prosecutors initiated an investigation into the deal following leaked audio conversations between Rubiales and Piqué regarding potential commissions.

Recently, Spanish police conducted raids on a property owned by Rubiales in Granada, as well as the offices of the RFEF in Madrid, while Rubiales was in the Dominican Republic.

Seven individuals were arrested and subsequently released, with Rubiales identified as one of five additional individuals under investigation.

Additionally, Rubiales is facing a separate legal case. Prosecutors are seeking a 2-1/2-year jail term for Rubiales for an incident involving an unsolicited kiss on the lips of player Jenni Hermoso following Spain’s victory at the Women’s World Cup.

Rubiales, who was forced to resign in September following the scandal, has denied any wrongdoing.

We are both different in our leadership style – Asamoah Gyan’s response on Ayew’s comparison

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan refrained from assessing Andre Ayew’s tenure as captain of the national team.

Instead, he highlighted Ayew’s strong leadership qualities, noting that Ayew, who served as his deputy, consistently demonstrated effective leadership.

When pressed to choose between the two as the better leader, Gyan pointed out that they possess distinct personalities and employ different styles of leadership.

“Everyone has his own style of leadership. Everyone saw what I did when I was the captain. And now it’s Andre’s time and his colleagues have gotten to know how he does his things,” he told Asempa FM.

“Andre is a good leader. We’ve been in camp together before and while he was my assistant, he showed signs of a good leader,” he added.

“Now it’s his era. At the end of the day, it’s like a debate and we don’t have a winner. But people know in their heads who did what, so everyone has his opinion.”

Andre Ayew assumed the captaincy from Asamoah Gyan in 2019. Under his leadership, the Black Stars have participated in four tournaments, including three Africa Cup of Nations and one FIFA World Cup.
