Chelsea not willing to let Reece James go despite PSR pressure – sources

Chelsea has no intention of allowing Reece James to leave this summer, despite mounting financial pressure on the club, sources have informed ESPN.

The West London side is gearing up to face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night, aiming to salvage what has been a disappointing first season under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Currently positioned 12th in the Premier League with 10 games remaining, Chelsea did reach the Carabao Cup Final, albeit losing to Liverpool in extra-time, and are set to face Manchester City in an FA Cup semifinal at Wembley later this month.

Securing European football for next season, either through winning a trophy or climbing up the league table, is seen as crucial for generating vital revenues.

There are concerns that Chelsea could potentially breach UEFA’s Financial Fair Play guidelines or the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Although sources within Chelsea have downplayed the possibility of non-compliance, the club’s substantial spending since the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital takeover in May 2022—exceeding ÂŁ1 billion ($1.2bn)—has raised eyebrows.

While around ÂŁ400 million has been recouped through player transfers, it’s understood that Chelsea may need to offload players again by June 30 to balance the books for the current accounting period.

Defender Trevoh Chalobah and midfielder Conor Gallagher are reportedly among those likely to be made available, despite Gallagher’s standout performances this season.

Tottenham has been frequently linked with Gallagher, whose contract will have just one year remaining at the end of the season. Failure to secure an extension could force Chelsea to consider offers.

Under PSR regulations, profits from sales of academy graduates are significant, prompting speculation about James’ potential departure. However, sources indicate that Chelsea is reluctant to part ways with James, whom they recently made club captain and awarded a new six-year contract in September 2022.

While Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have shown interest in James, it remains to be seen if Chelsea will resist lucrative offers this summer. For now, the club is planning with the defender in their ranks for the upcoming season.

Just don’t nominate me! – Pained Dreams FC coach warns SWAG over awards snub

Dreams FC head coach, Abdul-Karim Zito has thrown shots at the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) for consistently overlooking him in their awards scheme despite his heroics in the country for the past years.

The experienced gaffer has been very impressive in both national and club football and is arguably the best on the local scene for the past five years.

In late 2020, he led the Black Satellites to glory by winning the WAFU U-20 Championship in Benin, and then topped up with the Africa Youth Championship later in Mauritania.

Last season, Zito, once again defied all odds by taking down then reigning champions Hearts of Oak to clinch the FA Cup, which earned Dreams FC a slot in this season’s CAF Confederations Cup and very close to playing in the semi-final after their first leg win in Bamako last week against Stade Malien.

Speaking on Onua TV, the ex-Kotoko star took a huge swipe at SWAG’s awards scheme and feels they have always been disrespecting and overlooking his work and that sometimes leaves him in so much pain.

Anxiously, he added by saying he will never attend their events anymore: hence, they shouldn’t bother to nominate him again.

“Last year (2023), there was a media house that selected their top 5 coaches. I wasn’t even named among the top 5. Anytime SWAG nominate me, they overlook me for the award,” he fumed on Onua TV

“So I have taken the decision not to attend any SWAG event event if I am nominated. Because, I know I will be overlooked for others perhaps underserving.

“For 13 years, we had been in the wilderness until I won WAFU Zone B for Ghana and eventually won the CAF U20 AFCON. But they handed the individual award to a coach aspiring to win a league in Ghana. You’ve sparked sadness in me this morning talking about this, I feel pain!

“So I’ve decided that SWAG should not call me again regarding any of their event. There is no way I will go! They should not even nominate again!!

“Three times I’ve been there, three times I’ve been denied. Meanwhile, I am not there because I am Karim Zito, I am there because of my performance.

“So it’s true! I don’t know if it’s because of where I come from (referring to Dreams FC). But I am happy that gradually some of you (journalists) are understanding me and now seeing exactly what I am doing for Ghana football.”

Dreams FC will face the Malian giants on Sunday, April 7, in the return encounter of the CAF Confederations Cup at the Ohene Gyan Stadium.

He better have his head here – Arteta supports Partey’s contentment at Arsenal

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has expressed his full support for Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, urging him to extend his stay with the club.

Arteta highlighted the Gunners’ promising project and emphasized the importance of Partey remaining an integral part of it.

The Spanish gaffer praised the Black Stars deputy skipper, expressing his satisfaction with the Ghanaian player, who has one year remaining on his contract.

“Partey said he’s happy here? He’d better have his head here because we are playing for big things,” he said, as quoted by renowned journalist Fabizio Romano.

“He’s a top player, he’s under contract for one more year and I’m really happy with Thomas”.

Thomas Partey, addressing his uncertain future at the club, stated that he is only focused on Arsenal.

“My head is always here,” Partey noted after Arsenal’s win over Luton Town.

“This is where I choose to play. I’m really happy every time I’m on the field. I know a lot of speculations have been going on, but for me, I’m really happy to be here and to continue playing for this club.”

Thomas Partey joined the North London club in 2020, signing a five-year contract. Since then, he has played a crucial role in Arsenal’s resurgence under Mikel Arteta.

Video: See the attacks on Paintsil by Songo, Saddick that has landed them in court

Second Assistant Coach of the Black Stars, John Paintsil, has taken legal action against several sports journalists and their respective media outlets, citing comments he considers defamatory.

The journalists named in the lawsuit include Veronica Commey, Saddick Adams, Christopher Nimley, and Patrick Osei Agyemang, also known as Countryman Songo.

Additionally, writs have been served to media entities Omni Media Limited, Angel Broadcasting Network, and Multimedia Group.

Paintsil’s decision to pursue legal action follows remarks made by these individuals in response to his appointment as a Black Stars coach.

Saddick Adams, for instance, questioned Paintsil’s credibility and alleged that he had attempted to secure coaching roles using falsified documents.

Addressing his concerns on Angel TV’s sports program, Saddick Adams aired his grievances regarding Paintsil’s appointment, expressing doubt about its legitimacy.

“In 2019, he presented a fake certificate to allow him to coach, and it was discovered. Oti Akenteng and Prof. Mintah knew about it, and so he is a person of questionable moral character who also questioned the importance of the protest against GFA.

“We also don’t know why he is using a fake certificate to get a coaching job. He has served well as an ex-international, but that fake certificate must be investigated.

“We have that fake certificate, so we will pursue the next step; we will seek him to be cleared and not infect the national team,” Saddick Adams stated.

Songo and Nimley’s involvement in the lawsuit stems from the derogatory insults they directed at John Paintsil regarding his competence, eligibility, and his controversial remarks regarding the Save Ghana Football Demonstration.

Ejisu seat: Let me be Ronaldo to replace Messi – Nyantakyi ‘brags’ about his competency

In a discussion about finding a replacement for the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu, John Kumah, former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, drew a parallel between football and politics.

Nyantakyi compared Kumah’s significance in politics to that of soccer icon Lionel Messi, highlighting the need for a candidate of similar calibre to fill his shoes.

He stressed the importance of selecting a suitable replacement for Kumah who possesses the same high level of skill and capability.

“If Lionel Messi plays a match and gets injured, will you take anybody at all to go and replace him? You need Cristiano Ronaldo, Mbappe, or Haaland, you understand?” Nyantakyi said this in an interview with GhOne TV on April 4, 2024.

The former GFA president, who claims to have been approached several times by residents of Ejisu since 2012, expressed his willingness to vie for the MP position.

Describing himself as the “Ronaldo” equivalent, he suggests that he has the requisite skills to step into the void left by Kumah’s passing.

“I am Ronaldo and I think that I should be brought in to replace Lionel Messi,” he added.

The NPP has announced that the nominees will undergo vetting on April 6, 2024.

Following this, more than 1000 party delegates are anticipated to take part in the primary on April 13, 2024, to select a candidate for the upcoming by-election.

“Happy Days” – Ronaldo allegedly takes a swipe at Man Utd after loss to Chelsea

Following Manchester United’s defeat to Chelsea on Thursday, April 4, 2024, legendary player Cristiano Ronaldo posted a cryptic message shortly after the match.

The post, shared on X (formerly Twitter), featured a picture of Ronaldo laughing at his phone with the caption ‘Happy days’.

The timing of Ronaldo’s post, coming right after Chelsea’s 4-3 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League, sparked fury among United fans, who perceived it as a veiled dig at the club.

Ronaldo’s second stint at Manchester United concluded on a sour note after a fallout with manager Erik Ten Haag.

The Portuguese star reached an agreement with the club to terminate his contract by mutual consent in November 2022.

This decision followed Ronaldo’s public criticism of the club’s owner, manager Ten Hag, and his teammates, which aired in a viral interview with Piers Morgan.

Highlights: The 7-goal clash between Chelsea and Man Utd

In a highly anticipated Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea and Manchester United treated fans to a thrilling 7-goal encounter on Thursday, April 4, 2024.

Chelsea surged ahead with a two-goal lead within the opening twenty minutes. Conor Gallagher capitalized on a deflected pass in the box to open the scoring in the 4th minute.

Cole Palmer then doubled the Blues’ advantage from the penalty spot in the 20th minute.

However, Manchester United mounted a remarkable comeback before halftime.

Alejandro Ganarcho and Bruno Fernandes netted within five minutes of each other to draw United level.

In the second half, United continued their momentum, taking the lead in the 67th minute.

But Chelsea refused to concede defeat. In stoppage time, they were awarded a crucial penalty, expertly converted by Cole Palmer to salvage a draw.

The drama didn’t end there. In a stunning turn of events, Palmer’s shot deflected off McTominay and found the back of the net, securing a dramatic victory for Chelsea.

Palmer’s heroics earned him the man-of-the-match award and a well-deserved hat trick.

While Manchester United’s hopes for a top-four finish suffered a blow, Chelsea, despite the win, remained in 10th place on the table with 43 points, trailing United by five points in 6th place.

Jerome Boateng’s mother mails lawyer, tells lawyer her son has been abusing women for years

As legal proceedings resume for the alleged assault against his ex-girlfriend, Jerome Boateng’s mother has made startling claims, asserting that her son “has been abusing women for years.”

This revelation surfaced in an email sent to a Berlin lawyer on March 25, 2021.

The statement follows the tragic death of Kasia Lenhardt, Boateng’s former girlfriend, who took her own life on February 9, 2021, in Berlin.

According to the German publication Spiegel, Boateng’s mother claimed: “My son has been mentally and physically abusing women for years, now Kasia Lenhardt has taken her own life and he still doesn’t want to face the consequences of his behaviour.”

Spiegel’s investigation into Kasia Lenhardt’s death has unearthed compelling evidence supporting allegations of violence within her relationship with Jerome Boateng.

Forensic analysis of Lenhardt’s iPhone and extensive audio messages reportedly corroborate her accounts of abuse.

Additionally, it has emerged that Lenhardt allegedly intended to file a complaint against Boateng for bodily harm shortly before her untimely death.

Chat messages retrieved from Lenhardt’s communications paint a disturbing picture of the alleged abuse she endured.

As early as October 2019, Lenhardt documented instances of Boateng’s purported violence, detailing injuries such as broken thumbs and hematomas inflicted by him.

Speaking to Spiegel, Boateng’s lawyer explained: “Due to ongoing proceedings, it is currently not possible for our client to respond to your questions in detail. Therefore, fundamentally: You are simply misinformed to a large extent; In addition, they are apparently only provided with selective information. He never physically attacked.”

In 2021, Boateng was convicted of assaulting and insulting his former partner during a holiday in the Caribbean five years prior. A district court upheld the ruling in November 2022 but reduced the original fine from €1.8 million to €1.2 million.

However, last September, the Bavarian Supreme Court overturned Boateng’s conviction for physical assault due to procedural errors. Now, Bild reports that a new trial is scheduled to begin on June 14 in a Munich regional court.

West Ham to sell Kudus to boost it’s financial capacity – Former striker alleges

Former West Ham player Frank McAvennie has voiced concerns over the potential departure of Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta from the club in the upcoming transfer window.

He cites ongoing speculation and worries about losing the influential pair, both of whom have played significant roles for the Hammers this season.

Despite encountering injury setbacks, Brazilian midfielder Paqueta has contributed seven goals and seven assists across various competitions, while Ghanaian sensation Kudus has impressed with 13 goals and five assists in 36 appearances for the club.

McAvennie fears that West Ham may contemplate selling Kudus and Paqueta to raise funds, especially as the club seeks new investors to improve its financial standing.

The former Hammers and Celtic striker stresses the importance of retaining both players while urging the club to strengthen the squad with additional signings during the upcoming summer transfer window.

“I think we’ve got people who can score goals,” he told Football Insider.

    “We’ve got Kudus and Paqueta
keeping those two is the biggest problem for me, I fear they will both leave, that’s what I keep hearing.

McAvennie’s comments highlight his concerns about the possibility of West Ham losing key assets such as Kudus and Paqueta.

He stresses the importance of the club prioritizing the retention of these players while also addressing defensive weaknesses.

Paqueta is entering his second season at West Ham, while Mohammed Kudus joined the club last summer and has quickly made an impact.

Before joining West Ham, the 23-year-old Kudus garnered interest from several top clubs across Europe, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, and Barcelona.

The reliability of McAvennie’s sources regarding a potential summer transfer for either player remains uncertain.

John Paintsil takes legal action against Saddick Adams, Multimedia, Angel others for defamation

Former Black Stars defender, John Paintsil has initiated legal proceedings against three media outlets, three sports journalists, and an analyst following their recent criticisms of his new role as assistant coach of the Ghana national team.

In a lawsuit filed on Thursday, April 4, 2024, Paintsil has targeted Saddick Adams, Christopher Nimley, Patrick Osei Agyemang (Countryman Songo), and Veronica Commey, who have been vocal opponents of the state of Ghanaian football, advocating for reforms under the banner of Save Ghana Football.

The lawsuit also includes three media companies – Omni Media Limited, Angel Broadcasting Network, and the Multimedia Group – which are associated with the journalists in question.

Paintsil’s legal action stems from his questioning of the motives behind the Save Ghana Football protest held on February 14, 2024.

His comments about the demonstration, along with his subsequent appointment as assistant coach alongside Otto Addo, elicited further criticism, particularly from individuals like Countryman Songo, who openly criticised Paintsil on television.

Allegations made by Countryman Songo against Paintsil were reportedly unfounded, with other journalists questioning his suitability for the coaching position, citing previous reports of a “fake certificate.”

  • Government to seize terminals from drivers over proposed hike in transport fares – Drivers’ Union alleges

Drivers affiliated with the True Drivers Union claim they are facing government threats to seize their terminals should they decide to raise fares in response to increases in fuel prices, spare parts, and other essentials.

Yaw Berima, the Union’s Public Relations Officer, revealed in an interview on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo program with Kojo Marfo that officials issuing these warnings are adamant about preventing any actions by driver unions that could tarnish the government’s reputation.

“The government has informed us that if we continue to increase lorry fares and bring them disgrace, they will close all our terminals in the country and render us jobless,” he divulged.

Yaw Berima stated that the drivers had chosen to keep quiet in order to continue their transportation company in order to survive, despite being shaken by the threats.

“We do not have lands that we are operating on; all the lands belong to the various assemblies. You can’t argue with someone who has chewed a crab before if he says he can chew a calabash.”

“Someone who was able to collapse radio stations and banks, we cannot argue with them as to whether they can do it or not. We have decided to remain silent,” he said.

Barima however, took it out hard on the government, arguing that no sensible driver would support the ruling party after such threats.

He went on to issue a stern warning to the Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong, regarding statements about not conceding power to any other party that wins the elections, asserting that such tactics would not be tolerated by voters.

“Those childish talks and threats will not wash in this upcoming general election. Ghanaians will vote, and they will not vote for you. No sound driver will vote for the NPP. If another candidate wins and the government says they won’t give him the mandate, we will see what happens in the country,” he dared.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has not yet made a decision regarding its involvement in the upcoming Ejisu by-election in the Ashanti region, prompted by the passing of Member of Parliament Dr. John Kumah.

Although the party asserts that its candidate is prepared for the parliamentary election scheduled for December 7, it is hesitant about participating in the by-election, which is just a few months prior to the general elections, citing concerns such as cost and other factors.

“As I speak to you now, the party is yet to firm up on our decision whether to contest or not to contest. I’m sure that in the coming days we will officially make a statement to declare our position on whether we are going in or not. We are considering other factors as well.

In these elections, there are costs, and there is disruption in some of your calendar activities moving into the main election. The big catch for us is the December 7 election,” the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, said in an interview with Starr News.

He added: “So were are looking, if time permits, the resources permit and, if the indications permit that we go in full force and make a case out of the elections, and possibly win the election for the first time, our research team will report back to us in the coming week and once we have that research document from them and we are able to analyse it, then we will be guided by the data on why we would want to participate.”

Mahama: Ghana even dirtier with ‘failed’ Sanitation Ministry; pledges a dissolution when elected

In the event that he is re-elected and takes office in 2025, former president John Dramani Mahama has declared his intention to dissolve the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.

On April 4, 2024, Mahama gave a public speech at the Wisconsin International University College in Accra. Despite the ministry’s existence, he expressed unhappiness with its efficacy, noting growing levels of filth throughout the nation.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Mahama, highlighted the need for lower government spending and questioned the ministry’s purpose, saying that Ghana looked dirtier now than it did before the ministry was established.

“We will close down the Ministry of Sanitation, one to reduce expenditure and two, I don’t see any use. Accra, our country is dirtier than when there was no Ministry of Sanitation.

“Indeed, this country was cleaner when our country was under local government than as a stand-alone ministry and so we’ll close down that ministry and we’ll take the sanitation schedule back to local government, because we want to reduce government expenditure,” he said.

Mahama proposed consolidating several other underperforming ministries, including the Aviation and Railways Ministries, into the Transport Ministry.

“It is not only the Sanitation Ministry, in Transport, Aviation and Railways, we are going to close them down and send them back to the Transport Ministry. We are going to combine Communications and Information again. So, we want to reduce the number of ministries.

“With cleanliness, we think that it’s the duty of the district assemblies. Every assembly has an obligation to make sure that its district is clean and so we must decentralise sanitation to the district level,” he added.

Lewandowski and Cancelo suffer ban ahead of El Clasico over accumulated yellow cards

La Liga has confirmed that Robert Lewandowski and Joao Cancelo will each serve only a one-match ban for accumulating yellow cards, allowing them to participate in the upcoming match against Real Madrid later this month.

Both players received controversial yellow cards in their previous fixture against Las Palmas, bringing their total bookings for the season to five and triggering an automatic one-game suspension.

There were allegations that Lewandowski and Cancelo intentionally received these cards to avoid suspension for the crucial match against Real Madrid following their upcoming game against Cadiz.

According to La Liga’s disciplinary rules, any player found guilty of such actions would face a doubled suspension.

However, after reviewing the evidence, league officials determined that there was insufficient proof to penalize either player for misconduct.

Consequently, both Lewandowski and Cancelo have been handed one-match bans.

Although they will miss the match against Cadiz, Lewandowski and Cancelo will be eligible to play against Real Madrid on April 21.

“Don’t interrupt this process” – Ten Hag tells Ratcliffe amid new owner’s overhaul

Erik ten Hag has cautioned new Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe against disrupting the progress achieved under the Dutchman’s leadership.

With Ratcliffe and his INEOS team implementing various changes at Old Trafford, such as appointing Omar Berrarda as CEO and eyeing Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox for key recruitment positions, there’s a concern about potential interference with the club’s trajectory.

Despite United’s challenging season prompting speculation about Ten Hag’s future as manager, the 54-year-old, under contract until 2025, has expressed his desire to continue leading the team into the next season.

“I think you need to follow the process,” Ten Hag told a news conference on Wednesday. “We have good young players coming through. They are developing very well in their progress. We are in a good direction, and we need to take the next steps. Don’t interrupt this process.”

United are gearing up to face Chelsea on Thursday, aiming to recover from their disappointing display in the 1-1 draw against Brentford last Saturday.

The outcome at the Gtech Community Stadium dealt another blow to their already slim chances of securing Champions League qualification.

Ten Hag has acknowledged the challenge of catching up to teams like Aston Villa and Tottenham.

“I have high standards and I would be disappointed if we didn’t qualify,” said Ten Hag.”I know it will be very difficult because we are not in a good position. But we want to win every game, that is the standard we have here among each other. We will keep going and keep believing in those standards.

“That will be the approach in every game. We will keep fighting until the end. I know we are not in a good position. We have to catch up.”

United have nine league games remaining to close the gap on Villa and Spurs, but Ten Hag’s efforts have been hindered by persistent injury issues.

Player for Kaizer Chiefs, Luke Fleurs, was shot and killed during a carjacking on Wednesday, April 3, 2024.

The team has announced his passing.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Amakhosi acknowledged the terrible demise of the 24-year-old defender.

“Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time,” Chief wrote.

According to reports, the incident happened at a petrol station in Florida, Johannesburg.

The athlete was approached by some gunmen, according to a police report, who gave him the order to exit the automobile and then shot him.

“The suspects pointed at him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body,” Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo told local media as quoted by BBC.

Luke Fleurs joined the youth squad of Ubuntu Cape Town in 2013 and moved up to the first team in 2017.

He played football with Ubuntu Cape Town, Super Sports United, and Kaizer Chiefs during his seven years as a professional.

He inked a two-year contract to join the Chiefs in October 2023.

The likes of Nyantakyi don’t like peace – Countryman Songo reacts to ex-GFA boss comments on Football demo

Patrick Osei Agyemang, also known as Countryman Songo, a key organizer of the Save Ghana Football protest, has responded to Kwesi Nyantakyi’s criticism of their demonstration held on February 14, 2024.

During the April 2, 2024, episode of his Fire for Fire show, Songo expressed disagreement with a comment made by the former president of the Ghana Football Association, which seemed to undermine the significance of the protest.

While Songo acknowledged Nyantakyi’s suggestion that the organizers could have opted to submit a petition to the GFA instead, he was upset by the characterization of the protest as “unnecessary”.

The outspoken presenter from Adom TV argued that Nyantakyi’s attempt to diminish the protest was inappropriate and that he should concentrate on his campaign for the Ejisu parliamentary seat.

“I don’t understand his claim that the demonstration was unnecessary. I don’t understand that word. How can you say that the demonstration was unnecessary? I don’t agree with his claim that the protest was not necessary.

“If you want peace, we will give you peace, but people don’t like peace. Our football is in a bad state. He (Nyantakyi) even stated that since his exit, Ghana has not been able to qualify for the knockout phase of a tournament. This means that the football is bad now.

“He destroyed it with his corruption and those who came after him made it worse. The demonstration was an exercise of our constitutional rights,” he said.

In a recent interview with Captain Smart, Kwesi Nyantakyi, who is vying for the Ejisu constituency seat, criticized the decision of Songo, Saddick Adams, and several sports journalists to organize a demonstration.

Nyantakyi argued that instead of taking to the streets, the conveners should have opted to submit their grievances to the GFA through a written petition.

“I don’t agree with the Save Ghana Football demonstration. That protest was not necessary. They should have simply put their petition on paper and submitted it to the GFA,” he told Onua TV.

The “Save Ghana Football” protest witnessed a significant turnout of Ghanaians who marched through the streets of Accra, holding placards to voice their grievances against both the Ghana Football Association and the government.

Otto Addo has our support – Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan, the former Black Stars striker, has appealed to Ghanaians to exercise patience with Otto Addo and allow him the necessary time to revitalize the team.

During an interview on Asempa FM on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Gyan emphasised the importance of giving the coach sufficient time as the team undergoes a rebuilding phase.

“Otto Addo has returned. It’s a different atmosphere and different players. Although he has worked with some of the players, I think it’s still a process. He also came with a new staff so it’s a different era,” said Asamoah Gyan on Asempa FM.

He added that, just like Otto Addo’s first stint, Ghanaians should throw their weight behind the coach.

“Let’s see what he also has for us. We will support him through his rebuilding to see where he can take us. Ghanaians will be the ones to judge what he has done so I think we should give him time to rebuild his team,” Gyan said.

Otto Addo, returning for his second term as head coach of the Black Stars, previously guided Ghana to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

However, his second tenure commenced with disappointment as the team failed to secure a victory in the two matches played during the March 2024 international break. The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nigeria and managed only a 2-2 draw against Uganda.

It’s worth noting that both Asamoah Gyan and Otto Addo represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup held in Germany.

  • Businessman swindles car dealer of luxury cars GHC1.78 million

Accra Circuit Court has summoned Nana Ohene Djan Aggrey Bentil, a 54-year-old businessman, over allegations of defrauding a car dealer of four luxury vehicles valued at GHÂą1.78 million.

The vehicles involved include a 2018 Range Rover Sport, a 2020 Toyota Tundra, a Maserati, and another 2018 Range Rover.

According to court documents, Bentil, the director of N. O. B. Djania Company Limited, reportedly took the vehicles to have them evaluated by his bankers.

However, he allegedly impersonated the importers of the cars and illegally registered them at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office at 37, using the names of the actual owners without their consent.

Bentil pleaded not guilty to ten charges, including forgery of official documents, defrauding by false pretence, and issuing false cheques when he appeared before Judge Afia Owusuaa Appiah on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

During the bail application, Bentil’s counsel, Emmanuel Acolatse, argued that his client posed no flight risk, had a fixed place of abode, and would cooperate with investigations if granted bail.

However, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kofi Anane opposed the bail application, expressing concerns that Bentil might abscond, especially considering ongoing criminal charges against him in another court.

ASP Anane elaborated on the prosecution’s case, stating that Bentil allegedly contacted the complainant in June 2022, expressing interest in purchasing luxury cars.

Subsequently, Bentil inspected and purportedly agreed to buy four cars, demanding their original documents for valuation by his bankers.

Bentil allegedly issued post-dated cheques to the complainant as payment under the company name N.O.B. Djania Company Limited. He then fraudulently registered the cars under the names of their actual owners without their consent, subsequently selling two of the vehicles to another party.

Three of the eight cheques issued were cleared, resulting in the complainant receiving GHÂą500,000.00.

The court ordered the prosecution to provide details of Bentil’s other ongoing case before deciding on the bail application.

Help him, he will do well – Kwesi Nyantakyi on Kurt’s capability as GFA President

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has thrown his support behind the current leader, Kurt Okraku, expressing confidence in his abilities given the necessary backing from stakeholders.

Nyantakyi emphasised Okraku’s potential to elevate Ghana’s football status, underscoring the importance of unified support for the GFA president.

Despite recent criticisms of Okraku’s administration following the Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Nyantakyi remains hopeful about the future of Ghanaian football under Okraku’s leadership.

Speaking to 3Sports, Nyantakyi emphasised the need for collective assistance for Okraku, urging post-election unity to ensure support for the elected candidate.

“Oh, I think that he is capable. He just needs help. Everybody should help him. One thing I advise is that when it’s election time, people come with different tasks and have different candidates but let’s rally around whoever the majority elects and provide the needed support so that we can achieve the common objective,” he stated

“The common objective is to find national teams succeeding. Our football grassroots. For men’s and women’s football, everything going well. So let’s give him the support and I have no doubt that if we give him the support he will succeed”, he added.

Asamoah Gyan backs decision to appoint John Paintsil as the coach of the Black Stars

Ghana’s all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan has said that John Paintsil deserves his role as an assistant coach of the Black Stars.

Gyan believes Paintsil has been working as a coach since his retirement, making him a worthy choice for the assistant coach role.

He stressed that the former West Ham United defender is a dedicated person who gave everything to the national team during his playing days.

“John (Paintsil) sacrificed a lot for the national team but people seem to forget.

After retirement, he went to coach in South Africa as an assistant and gathered relevant experience,” he said on Asempa FM.

“If you look at his life after retirement, all he’s done is to coach. So if I look at his records and what he has done, I can only support his appointment,” Gyan added.

John Paintsil took on a new path after hanging up his boots.

He began his coaching career at Kaizer Cheifs serving as an assistant coach before setting up and managing his own football Academy.

  • 5 key takeaways from Kwesi Nyantakyi’s interview with Captain Smart

5 key takeaways from Kwesi Nyantakyi’s interview with Captain Smart

Former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) ,Kwesi Nyantakyi, has reentered the spotlight following his recent interview on Onua TV, aired on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

During the interview, Nyantakyi made several surprising revelations and allegations that sparked widespread discussion and debate.

Amidst the myriad of claims, there were five particularly noteworthy statements that garnered significant attention and fueled numerous conversations.

Here, we explore five key remarks made by Kwesi Nyantakyi during his televised interview.

    1. Admitting to paying a $100,000 bribe to kill number 12 documentary

Kwesi Nyantakyi claimed that he offered $100,000 to Anas Aremeyaw Anas in exchange for not including his involvement in the Number 12 documentary.

He provided detailed accounts of the alleged discussions and financial transactions that occurred prior to the documentary’s broadcast.

Nyantakyi implicated several notable individuals who were aware of the situation and played roles in facilitating the arrangement, ultimately leading to his purported payment of $100,000 to Anas.

According to Nyantakyi, he received a reimbursement after his segment was featured in the documentary, which aired in 2018.

“Before the video was released, a former colleague at the GFA Exco, Adam Munkaila, took me to Anas’ lawyer. I met him at his residence around Westland and he told me Anas was his student and had informed him he needed $150,000 to kill the story.

“I gave them $100,000, but they told me the amount was inadequate and later went ahead to release the video,” Nyantakyi said in an interview with Captain Smart on Onua TV on Tuesday morning.

“After the video came out, I asked for a refund and even the refund was done in instalments. Today, they would bring $20,000, and the next day another $10,000. They were giving me stories, but eventually I got everything back,” he said.

    2. Becoming a Minister of Sports

The ex-CAF vice president declared his eagerness to seize the chance to serve as a sports minister in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He indicated that the prospect of taking on the role under the NPP government is feasible, whereas it appears improbable under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership.

“If NPP comes and they make me a sports minister, I may consider it but if the NDC comes and they consider me, it will be difficult.”

Nyantakyi has transitioned into politics and is set to contest the NPP parliamentary seat in the Ejisu Constituency.

    3. Relationship with George Afriyie

The ex-GFA president discussed his rapport with his former vice president, George Afriyie.

He clarified that while there are no hostilities between them, he does not consider Afriyie to be a close friend.

“I have no issues with George Afriyie,” he confessed.

“If someone offends me, I don’t keep it in me; and I’ve let go of everything but I will not call him. He’s not my friend that I call for us to sit somewhere or go to the bush canteen to eat fufu,” said Nyantakyi.

    4. Apology to Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo

Nyantakyi apologised to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for using their names in the documentary.

“I admit I was wrong to mention the President [Akufo-Addo] and his Vice [Dr Mahamudu Bawumia] in that incident. I am sorry and I hope they forgive me,” he said.

    5. Ghana football has declined

During the interview, Kwesi Nyantakyi offered his thoughts on the state of Ghana football, implying that he was the glue that held the sport together.

Nyantakyi claimed that Ghanaian football has been in decline since he stepped down from his position in 2018.

“Ghana football has declined since I left. Since 2019, we have consistently exited tournaments in the first round or even during the group stage. So, if you plot it on a graph, you’d see a sharp decline.”

  • A ‘lazy man’s approach – IEA Director blasts Ghana’s reliance on IMF, World Bank to fortify the Cedi

Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA),Dr. John Kwakye, criticised the government’s heavy reliance on foreign aid to support the local currency during a press briefing at the IEA headquarters.

He raised concerns about the sustainability of Ghana’s economic strategy, particularly its dependence on funds from institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, labeling this approach as a “lazy man’s approach.”

Dr. Kwakye highlighted the risks associated with such borrowing, including Eurobonds and cocoa syndicated loans, and warned of increased pressure on the Ghanaian cedi when these loans come due for repayment.

Citing statistics from the recent Monetary Policy Committee meeting of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), he noted that the Cedi depreciated by 6.8 percent against the US dollar in the year leading up to March 20, 2024.

“The Governor admitted that the foreign exchange market came under some pressure, both seasonal and non-seasonal, in February and early March. He reported that in the year to March 20, 2024, the Ghana cedi recorded a depreciation of 6.8 percent against the US dollar. He, however, stated that the cedi “continues to recover its value.” But the question is, by what measure?

“Certainly, not in nominal terms, because since he spoke on 25th March, the cedi has continued to depreciate, reaching nearly GH±13 to the dollar. Let us repeat right here that relying on funds from the IMF, World Bank, Eurobonds, cocoa syndicated loans, etc. to bolster the cedi, as we have been doing, is not only a lazy man’s approach. To say the least but also clearly unsustainable, as the pressure would be back on when the loans fall due for repayment.”

“The way to stabilise the cedi on a durable basis is to increase our FX earnings through greater ownership of, and value addition to, our natural resources, to reduce our import demand through domestic industrialization and to entrench fiscal and monetary discipline,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said during the press briefing.

  • Your noise wouldn’t change new passport fees, it is here to stay – Dept Foreign Affairs Minister to Ablakwa

Your noise wouldn’t change new passport fees, it is here to stay – Dept Foreign Affairs Minister to Ablakwa

Despite facing criticism from the Ranking member on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong remains steadfast in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration’s decision not to reconsider the recently adjusted passport fees.

In response to Ablakwa’s intention to push for a review of the fees upon the resumption of Parliament, Ampratwum-Sarpong reiterates the Ministry’s position, affirming that the revised fees will remain unchanged.

“If he wants us to come to the committee, we will respect the committee, we will appear before the committee, we will repeat the reasons behind the request and the approval given by parliament for the passport fees,” he said in an April 3 interview with Joynews.

“These figures with the support of the majority of Ghanaians have come to stay. There is nothing he can do about it. He can make his noise out there. If he wants to bring it to the committee, to Parliament, we will meet him on the floor of Parliament. We will discuss it, we will debate it, and at the end of the day, he will fall flat on his face,” the deputy minister stressed.

He defended the fee hike, stating that the increased charges are essential for generating revenue to enhance service delivery at passport offices nationwide.

“We would have money to be able to invest to buy the equipment, the printers, and whatever other stuff that we need to be able to give excellent service.

“With the cash revenue flow, it will become possible for us to approach the suppliers of this equipment and materials and whatever that we need in our work.

“So once we get more computers, once we get more laminating machines, once we get more capturing machines, we will be able to capture more biometrics and therefore the six months, seven months, or eight months appointment days would be reduced.

“At the moment, it is out of control because we don’t have the capturing machines. We do have some but it is not enough,” he added.

Starting from April 1, there has been an increase in passport application fees, with the cost rising from GHÂą100 to Âą500 for the 32-page booklet and to Âą644 for the 48-page booklet under the standard service.

In response to public discontent regarding the heightened prices, Samuel Okudzeto, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has proposed a review of the fees. He argues that these elevated costs only exacerbate the already heavy financial burdens faced by Ghanaians.

“It is a matter we will revisit. We will summon the Ministers and officials from the Ministry to see what can be done because this is really terrible. It is going to add on to the already excruciating hardship and anguish that Ghanaians are going through,” he said.

  • Tottenham considers new investment options following ÂŁ86 million loss

Tottenham considers new investment options following ÂŁ86 million loss

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has acknowledged ongoing discussions with potential new investors following the revelation of a post-tax loss amounting to ÂŁ86.8 million ($109.2 million) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023.

Despite achieving a record turnover of ÂŁ549.6 million ($691 million) during the period, the club experienced a 21% increase in operating expenses, attributed to factors such as uncontrollable cost escalations in utilities, rates, and consumables, alongside substantial investments in new players.

Tottenham’s wage bill also surged by 20% to ÂŁ251.1 million ($316 million), positioning it as the fifth-highest in the league behind Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United.

The reported loss marks a significant rise from the previous year’s figure of ÂŁ50.1 million ($63 million).

Speculation regarding a potential sale of the club by owners ENIC has been circulating, with suggestions that they may entertain offers if deemed suitable.

However, sources close to the club have indicated to ESPN that ongoing discussions are primarily focused on selling a stake rather than pursuing a complete sale.

“Our ethos is clear — to be far-sighted and run the club sustainably,” Levy wrote in the chairman’s statement accompanying the figures

“This involves strict control of our cost base, increased commercial and sponsorship revenues and consistent European participation, all of which are key to our ability to continue to invest in the squad and win top honours.

“Since opening the stadium in April 2019, we have invested over ÂŁ600m ($755m) in our men’s and women’s first-team squads.

“To capitalise on our long-term potential, to continue to invest in the teams and undertake future capital projects, the club requires a significant increase in its equity base.

“The Board and its advisors, Rothschild & Co, are in discussions with prospective investors. Any recommended investment proposal would require the support of the club’s shareholders.”

The signings of James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario, along with Beth England’s transfer from Chelsea in January 2023 for a reported fee of around ÂŁ250,000, were notable transactions during the accounting period. However, the bulk of Tottenham’s summer transfer activity occurred after June 30, including Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich for a potential fee of up to €120 million.

The future growth trajectory of Tottenham hinges significantly on their ÂŁ1 billion stadium, which played a pivotal role in their financial landscape.

Notably, Beyonce’s five-night concert series last summer set a record as the “highest-grossing concert ever staged by a female artist at the time,” a milestone later eclipsed by Taylor Swift.

Moreover, Tottenham has entered into strategic partnerships to diversify revenue streams and enhance fan engagement.

This includes a 15-year collaboration with Formula One to offer an electric karting experience at the stadium and an extension of their contract with the NFL to host matches at the venue through the 2029-30 season.

Meanwhile, Daniel Levy, the club’s chairman, saw his personal income rise from ÂŁ3.3 million to ÂŁ3.6 million, accompanied by a ÂŁ3 million ($3.7 million) bonus.

This increase in earnings may provoke discontent among supporters, particularly in light of recent objections to the club’s decision to raise ticket prices by 6%.

  • Police arrest Luis Rubiales amid corruption probe

Police arrest Luis Rubiales amid corruption probe

Former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales found himself under police scrutiny upon his return to Spain in connection with a corruption investigation surrounding the relocation of the Spanish Supercopa to Saudi Arabia.

Rubiales, who was abroad in the Dominican Republic on March 21 during raids on his apartment in Granada and the RFEF headquarters in Madrid, had committed to returning to Spain on April 6 as scheduled.

However, he opted to return early, arriving at Madrid-Barajas airport where police awaited his arrival for questioning. Following the interrogation, he was released on the same day.

Although his arrest was not ordered by the presiding judge, Rubiales was taken into custody by the police’s Central Operational Unit department (UCO) for further questioning, according to ESPN sources.

Rubiales’ lawyer, Margrita Crespo, stated that he accompanied officers to a police station, where standard procedures such as reading his rights, fingerprinting, and searching his belongings were conducted. Despite this, Rubiales was not informed of any charges and was allowed to depart without restrictions.

Rubiales has denied any wrongdoing amid allegations that he personally benefited from the deal to take the Supercopa to the Gulf nation, telling La Sexta in an interview due to air on Wednesday that his money is “the product of my work and savings.”

The 2019 agreement to relocate the competition, facilitated by Rubiales and Gerard PiquĂ©’s Kosmos company, initially valued at €120 million ($129.2m), has been extended until 2029.

This decision, which shifted the contest between league champions and Copa del Rey winners to a four-team format, sparked controversy among Spanish football purists.

Concerns were raised about the event’s relocation from August to January and its expansion beyond national borders.

PiquĂ©’s involvement, given his status as an active player at the time, raised eyebrows, but both he and Rubiales asserted the legitimacy of their actions. However, leaked audio messages between the two in June 2022 prompted a Spanish court investigation into potential improper management by Rubiales.

In March, a judge authorized raids on 11 premises, including Rubiales’ property in Granada and the RFEF’s Madrid headquarters, leading to six arrests. While the RFEF suspended several staff members, Kosmos confirmed that no employees were detained or under investigation, and none of the company’s property was searched.

This incident adds to Rubiales’ legal woes following his resignation as RFEF president after a controversial incident involving midfielder Jenni Hermoso during the Women’s World Cup final in Australia.

FIFA imposed a three-year ban on Rubiales from football-related activities, while Spanish court proceedings recommended trial on charges of sexual assault and coercion, with a potential prison sentence of up to 2.5 years.

  • Ansu Fati needs to do better – Brighton’s coach De Zerbi

Ansu Fati needs to do better – Brighton’s coach De Zerbi

Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi has emphasised the need for more from Ansu Fati as the forward enters the latter part of his season-long loan from LaLiga outfit Barcelona.

Ansu, 21, arrived in Brighton amid considerable excitement at the beginning of the season but has faced challenges meeting expectations in the English league.

The Spanish international endured a two-month injury spell earlier in the year, restricting him to just 23 appearances across all competitions, with 14 of those outings coming off the bench.

“Ansu is a sensitive guy, he’s a good player,” De Zerbi said in a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s game against Brentford.

“The expectations from him are always very high. And he has to understand and accept the expectations. The first part of his career has been very tough to accept and understand [with injuries].

“But for the great players, the more important [thing] is to adapt to the expectations. We are helping him. He has to give something more because that’s not enough what he’s doing.

“But he’s a good guy. When you work with good guys, you are happy if you can help them and for him it’s the same.”

Ansu was handed the No. 10 shirt at Barça after Lionel Messi’s departure in 2021 but a string of injuries put the brakes on his career at the Catalan club.

He joined Brighton at the start of the season in search of regular football and scored four goals in his first 14 outings for the club before getting injured at the end of November.

Since returning in February, he has failed to score in nine appearances and was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

Brighton can climb to seventh in the Premier League with a win at Brentford on Wednesday as they target qualification for Europe for the second consecutive season.

Ex-Kotoko star Wilberforce Mfum advises fans to beat players following poor performance

Wilberforce Mfum, a revered figure in the history of Asante Kotoko, has made a controversial suggestion regarding the team’s performance.

The 87-year-old advocate believes that Kotoko players should face the consequences of their poor results by enduring the wrath of their fans.

According to Mfum, such measures are necessary to motivate the players to improve their performance on the field.

He expressed deep disappointment with the team’s recent string of unfavourable outcomes, deeming them unacceptable for the loyal supporters of the club to endure.

As Kotoko continues to struggle, failing to secure victories in four of their most recent league matches during the 2023-24 season’s second round, Mfum’s remarks underscore the growing frustration among fans and stakeholders alike.

“The only advice I have for the players is that before wearing Kotoko’s jersey, they must be dedicated and have the team at heart, always play for the team with full commitment and not with a lazy attitude.”

He, however, believes that the fans should have beaten the players for losing those four games.

“I think the players have never been beaten before; they should have been beaten by the fans after a losing streak so they understood their worth. How can you be bought with a large sum of money and then given such a poor performance? he quizzed.

Asante Kotoko are ten points behind the leaders of the league; they face Bechem Utd in their next Ghana Premier League fixture at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park in Bechem.

Blogger and social media commentator Albert Nat Hyde, also known as Bongo Ideas, admitted during an interview on Captain Smart’s Maakye show on Onua TV on April 3, 2024, that he visits hotels to gather information about television and broadcast journalist Serwaa Amihere from EIB Network’s GHOne.

Despite Captain Smart pointing out the potential criminality of his actions and the violation of privacy laws, Bongo Ideas argued that he has a “right to information.”

Furthermore, Bongo Ideas revealed that Serwaa Amihere is not the only individual he observes in this manner, as several other female celebrities are also subject to his scrutiny.

During the conversation Captain Smart asked,

“So you go and ask the hotels if Serwaa Amihere has been there?

Bongo: Oh its not just her, lots of women, most of those called celebrities

    Captain: But that’s criminal

    Bongo : It’s not criminal

Captain: I mean, that is impersonation. Because you are supposed to appear different to get the information

Bongo: I no dey impersonate oh, I go for information. I have the right to information. You can go and be like, has this person lodged at your hotel? and the receptionist can go through their

However, Captain Smart threatened to beat social media personality Albert Nat Hyde, known as Bongo Ideas, should he find him taking pictures of him while unaware.

Captain Smart noted that he would not allow himself to be subjected to such an infringement of privacy. He noted that he would destroy the gadget used and beat the individual involved.

“If you like, try me and see. I will smash your phone. You don’t have the right. Why are you hiding to take a photo of me,” Captain Smart said.

  • Xavi allegedly mulls Barca exit as he pursues specific ‘project guarantees’ from Laporta

Xavi allegedly mulls Barca exit as he pursues specific ‘project guarantees’ from Laporta

Xavi could reportedly make a shock U-turn as the Barcelona manager seeks specific “project guarantees” from Joan Laporta to stay on beyond the summer.

Xavi sent shockwaves through the club when he announced his decision to step down at the end of the season, citing the job as “cruel” while expressing concern over his mental well-being.

However, amidst an impressive 11-match unbeaten run, which includes progress to the Champions League quarterfinals, support for retaining Xavi has been gaining momentum in the upper echelons of the Catalan club.

Barca president Laporta, in an effort to retain the 44-year-old manager, has expressed his desire to persuade Xavi to continue leading the team.

Vice President Rafa Yuste echoed Laporta’s sentiments and emphasised that the club legend should continue given his understanding of the club’s objectives and his autonomy in making the final decision.

According to Sport, Xavi is seeking specific assurances from Laporta and the board regarding Barcelona’s long-term project. He wants a carefully curated transfer shortlist that considers the club’s financial constraints, rather than reaching out to potential targets without purpose.

Mundo Deportivo has reported that Laporta’s confidence in Xavi’s coaching abilities is grounded in his track record of developing young talents and fostering team cohesion.

Xavi’s rapport with both emerging prospects and experienced players is highly valued by the club’s executives.

Furthermore, Laporta envisions a collaborative partnership between Xavi and sporting director Deco, leveraging their mutual understanding and strategic alignment to drive the club forward.

Xavi’s contract with Barcelona extends until 2025, and Laporta expects him to fulfill it. There is also an option to extend it by another year, which the club may consider if positive results continue.

A victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League would advance them to the semi-finals and strengthen the calls for Xavi to remain at the helm.

Brighton announces a $154 million profit for 2022/2023 season

Premier League club, Brighton, announced a remarkable after-tax profit of ÂŁ122.8 million ($154.4 million) for the 2022-23 season.

This substantial increase from the previous year’s profit of ÂŁ24.1 million ($30.3 million) was attributed to the sale of key players like Alexis Mac Allister, Yves Bissouma, and Marc Cucurella, as well as compensation received for former manager Graham Potter, who joined Chelsea in September 2022.

It’s worth noting that the reported figures do not include significant transfers such as Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez, as their moves to Chelsea were finalised after the reporting period.

Caicedo’s transfer fetched up to $146 million, while Sanchez’s transfer reportedly brought in $32 million.

Furthermore, Brighton’s financial success was bolstered by their achievement of their highest-ever Premier League finish, securing sixth place, and reaching the semifinals of the FA Cup.

“We now have a very solid platform to continue to make significant progress on the pitch, by investing in our squad,” Brighton deputy chairman and chief executive Paul Barber said.

Brighton reported a record turnover of ÂŁ204.5 million ($257 million), indicating significant financial growth for the club.

However, this success has attracted attention to Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is being considered for several high-profile coaching positions expected to become available this summer.

Vacancies at top clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Liverpool, where Thomas Tuchel, Xavi Hernandez, and Jurgen Klopp are set to depart, have been linked to De Zerbi.

Despite the speculation, De Zerbi stated last week that he intends to hold discussions with Brighton’s owners before making any decisions about his future.

“It’s [future] not a problem, it’s a part of my work. At the moment, I want to be focused and to keep my eyes on the target we have. I have the contract at the moment. The focus is on the pitch,” he said.

“I’m very relaxed. The problems are the injured players and the preparations for the next game. These are the problems not the contract or my future.”

De Zerbi’s contract with Brighton expires in 2026.

  • Better to join Liverpool over Madrid; you’d make good pair with Salah – Robert Pires to Mbappe

Better to join Liverpool over Madrid; you’d make good pair with Salah – Robert Pires to Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe is anticipated to turn down Real Madrid’s offer and opt for Liverpool as his next destination after departing Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite the widespread expectation of a free transfer to the Spanish giants this summer, former France and Arsenal player Robert Pires suggests that Mbappe should take a different path and consider a move to England.

Pires envisions Mbappe forming a formidable partnership with Mohamed Salah at Anfield, favouring this prospect over joining forces with players like Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Pires said to Le Media Carre: “I’m sorry, Kylian, but you weren’t the first player to say no to Real Madrid. I don’t know what decision he will make in the end, but I turned Madrid down because I had two other options.

I’m sure that if I hadn’t had the opportunity to going to Arsenal or Juventus, I would have gone to Real Madrid. That’s for sure.

“I would like to see him at Liverpool. It’s a great family club, there’s a good structure, no pressure and, the fans are level-headed
And I think a Salah-Mbappe partnership could be really explosive.

I think he is capable of rejecting Real Madrid.Mbappe has denied claims he has already agreed to join Madrid from PSG this summer, while coach Luis Enrique has not given up hope of convincing him to stay at the French giants for at least one more season.

  • Todd Boehly pleads with fans over Chelsea’s lacklustre form

Todd Boehly pleads with fans over Chelsea’s lacklustre form

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has called for patience from fans as the club’s long-term project unfolds.

Since joining Stamford Bridge alongside Clearlake Capital, Boehly has served as chairman, overseeing a period of disappointing results.

With Chelsea finishing 12th last season and currently sitting 11th this year, fans have expressed frustration through anti-Boehly chants during matches.

In an interview with Forbes, Boehly recognized the sentiments among supporters but emphasised the importance of staying dedicated to the project moving forward.

“We just need to let the process develop and give them the time to go from being unbelievable individual players with great skills to fold into a team,” Boehly claimed.

“The good news is people care so much. And the bad news is that people care so much. That leads to times when they’re frustrated with the team and the owners. I get that, but we just have to continue to stay the course.”

As per a unique agreement with his fellow co-owners, Boehly is slated to step down from his role as chairman in 2027.

Under the terms of the agreement, Boehly and Clearlake will each have the opportunity to nominate the chairperson every five years.

Boehly appointed himself for the initial term, while Clearlake is expected to exercise their option for a change. Chelsea has vehemently refuted suggestions that this upcoming transition indicates discord between Boehly and Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano.

If Boehly remains part of the ownership group, he will have the chance to select a new chairperson in 2032, potentially reinstating himself in the role.

  • My position as flagbearer was ‘given’ to me by Christian majority in NPP – Dr Bawumia

My position as flagbearer was ‘given’ to me by Christian majority in NPP – Dr Bawumia

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressed gratitude to Christians within the party for electing him as the first Muslim flagbearer during an Iftar event at the Suhum Ayekotse Central Mosque.

At the event, attended by Imams, Chiefs, and constituents from the Suhum Constituency on Saturday, March 30, 2024, Dr. Bawumia reflected on his journey within the NPP.

He emphasised the significance of his victory in securing the party’s flagbearer position despite initial doubts about a Muslim leading the party.

Dr. Bawumia credited his success to divine intervention, highlighting the overwhelming support he received from Christian members within the party.

“During the presidential primary, they said a Muslim could not lead the NPP. But by the grace of God, after the voting, out of the 10 candidates, I secured an unprecedented 61% which signifies the hand of God in the victory because when you look at NPP, Christians are more than Muslims in the party so it means it is the Christians who elected Dr Bawumia a Muslim, as flagbear for the NPP for the first time; it has not happened before,” said Dr. Bawumia.

Dr. Bawumia also made a bold declaration to the Muslim community, promising to bring the Qur’an to Jubilee House, Ghana’s seat of government, if elected as President.

He said, “after December 7th, I will take the Qur’an and pray and take it to the Jubilee house. It is possible.”

Vice President Dr. Bawumia expressed his ambition for the forthcoming presidential election, stating his intention to serve two terms as president. He contrasted his potential eight-year tenure with Mahama’s remaining four-year presidency.

“Mahama has only four years but I will have eight years. Do we want four years or eight years? That is why I want him to be patient so that I take the vehicle and drive. Now I am a mate”.

Dr. Mamudu Bawumia urged for peaceful proceedings and highlighted his competition with former President Mahama, urging him to step aside and allow him the opportunity to lead the nation.

“So we are going into an election; everything must be peaceful. I am contesting this election with my brother, the former President Mahama [Flagbearer of NDC] who has been President before, reason I have been telling him to stay back so that I also clinch the presidency because I have not been President before. We know what he did he should also give me a chance to be president to also exhibit what I can do.”

Dr. Bawumia’s statement stands in contrast to that of Alan Kyerematen, an independent presidential aspirant, who also made a plea to voters by asserting that Ghana, being predominantly Christian, should elect a Christian leader in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Kyerematen delivered his message at the Church of Pentecost’s Easter Sunday Convention, presenting himself as the candidate capable of bringing about transformative change for the nation.

“As a predominantly Christian nation, as Christians, it is our responsibility that we elect a Christian leader who is also a Christlike leader.”

He emphasized the importance of electing a leader who aligns with Christian principles, portraying himself as the embodiment of such values.

  • Quick to forget – Pep hits back at Roy Keane over ‘League Two player’ jibe at Haaland

Quick to forget – Pep hits back at Roy Keane over ‘League Two player’ jibe at Haaland

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has responded to Roy Keane’s criticism of Erling Haaland by defending the young striker.

Keane had commented after Manchester City’s draw with Arsenal that while Haaland excels at scoring goals, his overall performance is reminiscent of a player from a lower division.

This remark has stirred discussions among football fans and analysts.

Speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, Manchester United legend Keane said: “The levels of his general play are so poor, and not just today. His general play for such a player is so poor, I think he has to improve that he’s almost like a League Two player.”

Guardiola, however, vehemently opposed Keane’s assessment and told reporters: “I do not agree with him, absolutely not. It’s like [if] I said he’s a manager for the second or third league. I don’t think so.

“He’s the best striker in the world and he helped us win what we won last season and the reason why we don’t create many chances [against Arsenal] is not from Erling. He is exceptional. We need more presence in the final third with more people and we played an exceptional game against Arsenal. I reviewed it.”

Guardiola expressed surprise at the criticism directed towards Haaland, particularly coming from a former player like Keane. He believes that ex-players, having experienced the rigours of professional football first-hand, should demonstrate a deeper understanding and empathy towards current players.

“I am surprised when it comes from former players. It’s like referees when they retire, they always criticise the refs,” he said.

“That always surprises me. The memory disappears quickly. The problems players have now, they had too. They missed it a thousand, million times and were hurt when they were criticised by former players. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future but I am not a guy who is going to criticise my colleagues when I retire.”

Haaland’s remarkable goal-scoring record further bolstered Guardiola’s defence of the player. With 52 goals in 53 games last season and 29 goals in 35 games this term, Haaland’s prowess in front of goal is undeniable, cementing his status as one of the most prolific strikers in modern football.
As City continue their pursuit of the Premier League title, Guardiola’s spirited defence of Haaland shows his unwavering faith in the striker’s abilities.

Nonetheless, the Spaniard admitted that modern superstars should get used to the criticism. “It’s their job, accept it,” he said.
“If you can’t accept it as a footballer, you have to dedicate to another job, like reading books or . . . .”

Haaland will have an opportunity to silence his critics when he takes to the pitch against Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

  • Don’t go for a passport if you can’t afford it – Ayorkor Botchwey to Ghanaians after price hikes

Don’t go for a passport if you can’t afford it – Ayorkor Botchwey to Ghanaians after price hikes

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, advised that individuals unable to afford a passport should avoid applying for one.

She emphasised that passports are no longer the primary means of identification and pointed to the National Identification system as a more effective alternative during a discussion with reporters.

Ms Botchwey stated, “Today, as we speak, we have the National Identification that is working very well, so that’s our primary source of identification. No longer the passport.

“And even those who have the National ID can travel into the country with it. So, then I’m humbly asking Ghanaians that please, if you do not need a passport and because you cannot afford it, please, humbly, I’m asking you not to go for a passport because it’s no longer your primary source of identification,” she added.

Expressing concern over the government’s subsidy of passport applications, she warned that quality services provided to Ghanaians might suffer if the subsidy continues.

“If the government is subsidising heavily, it’s difficult to provide any good services to Ghanaians,” she said.

She further pledged to collaborate with Parliament in case there is a need to reconsider passport fees, underscoring that such adjustments are not intended to impose financial strain on citizens.

The Ministry unveiled revised passport service fees starting from April 1, 2024, in accordance with the 2023 Fees and Charges regulations, L.I.2481.

The processing fee for a 48-page expedited passport now stands at GHS800, while a 32-page application carries a cost of GHS700.

She noted: “Fees come from the Parliament of Ghana. We make a presentation to them; we give them the bare facts of what it is. Parliament is aware of this and these charges came from Parliament. If Parliament decides, we should go back, we will have to look at it, it is Parliament that has decided and we will go by it.”

  • That’s not true! – Anas’ Tiger P.I denies Nyantakyi’s US 100k dollars bribery claims

That’s not true! – Anas’ Tiger P.I denies Nyantakyi’s US 100k dollars bribery claims

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his firm, Tiger Eye P.I., have refuted allegations made by former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Nyantakyi claimed that he paid $100,000 to Anas through a lawyer to prevent the airing of the explosive “Number 12” documentary, which featured incriminating footage of him.

However, Tiger Eye P.I. has categorically denied soliciting bribes from Nyantakyi. They clarified that their legal representation is exclusively handled by CromwellGray LLP, not the lawyer Nyantakyi mentioned.

Furthermore, Tiger Eye P.I. pointed out that Nyantakyi’s admission of paying bribes corroborates FIFA’s decision to ban him from football activities.

Despite Nyantakyi’s bid for political office in the Ejisu Constituency by-elections, Tiger Eye P.I. asserted that he is attempting to rehabilitate his reputation despite ongoing legal proceedings related to his actions in the “Number 12” documentary.

Ultimately, Tiger Eye P.I. emphasized that Nyantakyi’s eligibility for political office should be decided by the New Patriotic Party and the constituents of Ejisu, considering his misuse of power during his tenure at the GFA.

Read the full statement from Tiger Eye P.I below

UNVEILING THE PLOT: THE NYANTAKYI BRIBERY SAGA

    1. Tiger Eye P.I. has recently been made aware of an allegation concerning the payment of a bribe by the disgraced former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, to lawyer(s) purportedly representing renowned undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. The alleged purpose of this bribe was to prevent the publication of the famous Number12 documentary, which focused on corrupt practices within African football.

    2. Numerous media outlets have reported on Mr. Nyantakyi’s confession, wherein he claims to have paid a sum of $100,000 as a bribe to Anas’s lawyer by name, Kwame Gyan, a lecturer at University of Ghana.

    3. Tiger Eye P.I. and Anas Aremeyaw Anas categorically deny any involvement in soliciting or accepting bribes from Kwesi Nyantakyi prior to the publication of the documentary. The core mission of Tiger Eye and Anas is to expose and confront corruption, making the notion of shielding corrupt individuals utterly preposterous given the extensive resources and efforts invested in producing such exposés.

    4. It should be noted that neither Tiger Eye P.I. nor Anas Aremeyaw Anas engaged the services of a lawyer named Kwame Gyan from the University of Ghana. At all material times, including before, during, and after the production of the Number12 documentary, Tiger Eye and Anas have exclusively retained the legal representation of CromwellGray LLP, situated in Cantonments, Accra. CromwellGray LLP has consistently acted as legal counsel for Anas in matters relating to litigation initiated by or against journalistic publications involving Anas.

    5. Tiger Eye P.I. unequivocally asserts that any purported criminal arrangement between Mr. Nyantakyi and any alleged lawyer remains solely between Mr. Nyantakyi and the purported recipient. Tiger Eye P.I. firmly denies any involvement or knowledge of such activities. Should Mr. Nyantakyi’s claims hold substance, we challenge him to pursue legal action against Lawyer Kwame Gyan, including lodging a petition with the General Legal Council, to substantiate his allegations.

    6. Mr. Nyantakyi’s assumption that such a priceless exposĂ©, which had long been advertised by BBC, could be shelved by simply ‘paying’ a $100,000 bribe is not only shocking but also indicative of naivety. Tiger Eye underscores its robust internal mechanisms in place, making it difcult for any individual to alter or suppress an investigation.

    7. Mr. Nyantakyi, by his admission, is a self-confessed bribe-giver, and a bribe-taker for attempting to bribe his way out of a painstaking investigation into his conduct. Per his self-confessed bribery attempt, Mr. Nyantakyi has proven that the life-ban from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at national and international level for conflict of interest and bribery offences provided for by FIFA Code of Ethics (FCE) was justified.

    8. Presently, Mr. Nyantakyi remains a subject of a ban from all football-related activities, both domestically and internationally. Additionally, he faces ongoing criminal trial for corruption and fraud at the High Court in Accra. Mr. Nyantakyi’s desperation to evade accountability could only happen after the murder of the key witness for the state, Ahmed Suale, after his face was shown on national televsion. A day before his assasination, Mr. Suale was in conference with state prosecutors over the criminal trial of Nyantakyi.

    9. Anas Aremeyaw Anas, now a crucial witness for the state, has opted not to testify following a Supreme Court ruling mandating him to show his face to Mr. Nyantakyi and his legal team. Anas perceives this as a significant risk to his personal safety. However, should the Supreme Court grant permission for his testimony without disclosing his identity, Anas is prepared to cooperate fully as a witness for the state.

    10. Tiger Eye P.I. observes that the reiteration of these allegations initially surfaced through Mariam, the wife of Kwesi Nyantakyi. Her subsequent silence ensued following challenges to provide substantiating evidence for her claims.

    11. It is noted that Mr. Nyantakyi appears to be endeavouring to restore his credibility, presumably with aspirations to contest as a parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu constituency under the New Patriotic Party. However, Tiger Eye P.I. asserts its independence from such endeavours.

The decision regarding Mr. Nyantakyi’s eligibility rests with the NPP and the constituents of Ejisu. Nonetheless, it’s imperative to emphasise that Tiger Eye P.I. conducted a thorough investigation, leading to Mr. Nyantakyi’s conviction and subsequent ban from football activities due to bribery, conflict of interest.

    12. Tiger Eye remains committed to exposing crime and graft in Ghana and beyond.

  • Some big men in Ghana paid Anas’ Tiger Eye to ‘ruin me; they said I was too powerful – Kwesi Nyantakyi

Some big men in Ghana paid Anas’ Tiger Eye to ‘ruin me; they said I was too powerful – Kwesi Nyantakyi

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) and aspirant for Ejisu Parliamentary seat president Kwesi Nyantakyi claims that the infamous “Number 12” documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI was orchestrated by some big wigs to oust him from his position

He made these remarks on Captain Smart’s Onua TV morning show ‘Maakye’ on March 2, 2024.

According to him, the prevailing narrative suggested that he was too powerful, and as a result, Anas and his crew were paid to ruin his reputation.

Drawing from an English adage that says ” you have to give a dog a bad name before you can kill it, Nyantakyi contended that Anas, did exactly that.

“Oh yes, because it was widely known that Kwesi Nyantakyi was too powerful. There is a popular English adage that says, ” you have to give a dog a bad name before you can kill. So Anas and his team couldn’t have killed me if they didn’t give me a bad name.

There are some bigwigs in Ghana who were behind it,” he said.

He claims that at the right time he will name and shame the faces behind the number 12 documentary.

“There are some bigwigs in Ghana who were behind it, but at the right time I will mention their names, because if I do right now, they will be summoned by court. I will be asked to present proof so at the right time I will name them. They know themselves; those in football know them too, “he added.

One of Tiger Eye PI’s notable investigations was the documentary titled “Number 12,” which exposed corruption and bribery in Ghanaian football.

The documentary, released in June 2018, revealed widespread corruption among football officials, referees, and administrators in the country.

In “Number 12,” Anas and his team posed as investors and agents seeking to bribe football officials to influence the outcome of matches and player selection.

The documentary captured several high-ranking officials, including the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, accepting bribes and engaging in unethical conduct.

As a result of the documentary, Kwesi Nyantakyi resigned from his position as president of the GFA and was banned from football-related activities by FIFA.

The documentary also led to the dissolution of the GFA’s executive committee and sparked widespread reforms in Ghanaian football governance.

  • Emi Martinez tells why he’s chosen Aston Villa amid ‘huge’ transfer offers

Emi Martinez tells why he’s chosen Aston Villa amid ‘huge’ transfer offers

World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has clarified why he hasn’t pursued a high-profile transfer away from Aston Villa.

Despite his success with Argentina in the Copa America and the FIFA World Cup, Martinez remains content with his current club.

Since joining Villa from Arsenal in 2020, he has been instrumental in their performances, recently achieving his 50th clean sheet against Wolves.

The victory against their local rivals has bolstered Villa’s chances of securing a top-four finish and qualifying for the Champions League.

Martinez prioritises helping Villa achieve success over seeking a move to a club already established in European football’s elite competitions.

He has said, “Since I joined the club, we have progressed by leaps and bounds. When I arrived, we were at the bottom and became a mid-table club, then got to the Conference League and now we were recently fighting for first place.

Obviously, after many injuries, we fell a little, but we are in the Champions League positions and in the quarter-finals of a European competition.

The club hasn’t qualified for the Champions League for 45 years, so entering the Champions League would be like winning a title.

It’s very good because it’s easy too jump to a giant club and play in the Champions League. But playing in the Champions League with a club that nobody expects to be there – the merit for me is a little more.”

Martinez’s contract with Villa Park runs until the summer of 2027, indicating that, at 31 years old, he still has many years of top-level football ahead of him.

Whether representing his club or his country, Martinez continues to demonstrate his prowess on the field, making significant contributions to both teams.

  • Man Utd’s Raphael Varane ‘cry’ over concussions from heading football; advises son against it

Manchester United defender, Raphael Varane, has opened up about the issue of concussions in football, revealing his personal experiences and advising caution, especially to his son.

Varane, who has encountered concussions while playing for France and Real Madrid, expressed concern over the inadequate awareness and handling of head injuries in the sport.

Reflecting on incidents like the 2014 World Cup match against Nigeria, where he continued playing despite a concussion, Varane emphasised the need for better recognition and management of such injuries to prevent potential long-term consequences.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Varane said, “I finished the match but I’m in ‘autopilot’ mode. If someone had spoken to me at that time, I don’t even know if I would have been able to respond.”

However, he did not dare to miss the World Cup quarterfinal against Germany, which Les Bleus lost 1-0.
“I was not in my normal state and so I was taken care of,” he said. “I had lost weight because I was dehydrated, I was out of shape but played because it was a World Cup quarterfinal.”

Varane also recounted another unsettling experience during a La Liga game for Real Madrid against Getafe in 2020. Following a blow to the head, he endured severe fatigue, prompting his substitution.

Despite this, the effects lingered for days, leaving him drained. However, he had little time to recuperate, with a crucial Champions League fixture against Manchester City looming on the horizon.

He was not 100 percent in the warm-up and “felt like a spectator” during the match.

He was so exhausted that he “almost wanted to slap” himself in a desperate attempt to get back to his optimum level. It ended up being one of the worst displays of the French defender’s Real Madrid career, as his individual errors led to a 2-1 loss for Los Blancos.

Varane also disclosed that he became aware of micro-concussions – incremental head impacts leading to concussions – only recently and even had to sit out a game for United earlier this season due to “eye fatigue.”

“The first time I heard about [micro-concussions] was this season when specialists came in to talk to us about it
Often, as players, we don’t understand and we don’t even think about doing a test,” he said.

“Earlier this season, I headed the ball repeatedly during a match for Manchester United and felt abnormally tired in the following days, as well as having some eye fatigue. I reported it to the staff, who strongly recommended that I don’t play, and I took a test, which meant that I missed the next match.”

Varane says medical experts have suggested United players refrain from heading more than 10 times in training sessions. Although this cannot be maintained in a live match, the defender does not want his seven-year-old son to go through the same ordeal, and has hence advised him not to head the ball at all.

“My seven-year-old son plays football, and I advise him not to header the ball,” he said. “Even if it does not cause immediate trauma, we know that in the long term, repeated shocks are likely to have harmful effects. I don’t know if I will live to be 100, but I know that I have damaged my body. As footballers playing at the highest level, we are used to pain, we are a bit like soldiers, tough guys, symbols of physical strength, but these symptoms are almost invisible.

“If your leg hurts and you limp, everyone sees it. But with head injuries, it immediately feels weak to say that you are tired, that you have migraines or eye fatigue
So at first, we tell ourselves that it will pass.”

As United prepare for their upcoming match against Chelsea, Varane’s revelations serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritising player welfare and increasing awareness of concussion risks in football.

The FA protocol insists that no player should be allowed to continue if he is seemingly suffering from concussions in both matches and training sessions.

Barca to convince Xavi to stay with alleged Haaland move

Barcelona is reportedly eyeing a move for Erling Haaland from Manchester City in 2025, aiming to convince their current manager, Xavi, to extend his stay at Camp Nou.

Despite Xavi’s initial plan to step down at the end of the 2023-24 season, Barca’s recent success in reaching the Champions League quarter-finals and closing the gap on Real Madrid in the Liga title race has sparked speculation that he may reconsider.

To persuade Xavi to stay, Barcelona is planning ambitious signings in the transfer market.

Mundo Deportivo reports that they have set their sights on Haaland, the prolific Norwegian striker, for the summer of 2025.

While Haaland has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the past, Barcelona is confident they can compete for his signature.

Although Haaland is under contract with Manchester City until 2027, his deal reportedly includes exit clauses.

Barcelona sees Haaland as a suitable long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to depart soon, given his age of 36 in August.

Securing Haaland’s services would not only bolster Barcelona’s attacking prowess but also provide Xavi with a promising addition to his squad, potentially influencing his decision to remain in his coaching role.
