Manager of the France national team, Didier Deschamps, sees Kylian Mbappé’s reduced playing time at Paris Saint-Germain as a potential benefit for the upcoming European Championship and Olympic Games.
Mbappé, who will depart PSG as a free agent after this season, has only played the full 90 minutes in three matches since February 14.
These include a Champions League victory against Real Sociedad, a French Cup triumph over Nice, and a recent Ligue 1 win against Montpellier on Sunday.
Asked about Mbappé’s game time, Deschamps told reporters on Monday: “It’s important to be physically fresh for a major competition. In any case, all the players will arrive at the end of the season feeling a little tired.
“If that fatigue can be reduced a little [all the better],” the French coach added ahead of a friendly against Germany on March 23.
A move to Real Madrid this summer could prevent Mbappé from fulfilling his dream of playing at this summer’s Paris Olympics, after France under-23 coach Thierry Henry said on Monday that Madrid had turned down a request to release players for the Games.
“Real Madrid’s stance on the Olympic Games is a bit outdated,” Deschamps said. “But business people are the ones who decide. If it’s not on an official FIFA date, if they say no, the answer is no.”
Juan Jesus has come forward with claims of a racist comment directed at him by Francesco Acerbi duringNapoli’s recent Serie A match against Inter.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the spotlight shifted to allegations of racism following the incident. During the game, Juan Jesus was seen signalling to the referee, indicating that Acerbi had made a racist remark towards him.
He also pointed to the “Keep Racism Out” badge on his sleeve, which is part of Serie A’s anti-racism campaign.
Despite the controversy, Acerbi initially joined the Italy squad for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Ecuador in the United States.
However, he has since been replaced by Roma’s Gianluca Mancini.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) explained the decision in a statement, which reads: “From the Inter defender’s account, pending that what happened is reconstructed with full respect to the autonomy of the sporting justice system, it emerged that there was no defamatory, denigrating or racist intent on his part.
It was nevertheless agreed to leave Acerbi out of the squad for the next two friendly matches in the United States, to guarantee the necessary serenity to the national team and to the player himself, who will return to his club today.”
Upon his return from the Italy camp, Acerbi said to the Italian media: “I did not say any racist phrases. I have been playing football for 20 years and I know what I say. Many things happen on the pitch … but when the referee blows his whistle, you shake hands, and it all goes back to how it was before.
“There must be no racism anywhere in the world. I’m sorry I had to leave the national team training camp, but that’s how it was and it’s right.”
Juan Jesus took to social media to issue an angry response to Acerbi’s denial, claiming the Inter defender called him a “nero”—the I Italian word for black—before using the racist slur “n*gro.”. The Napoli star’s statement in full reads: “For me, the issue was closed yesterday on the pitch with Acerbi’s excuses and honestly, I would have preferred not to go back to something so vile as what I had to suffer.
But today I read statements by Acerbi totally contradicting the reality of the events, with what he said yesterday on the field of the game and with the evidence shown also by footage and unmistakable lips in which he asks for forgiveness.
“I’m not going to fit like that. Racism is being fought here and now. Acerbi told me, ‘go away, nero, you’re just a ngro.’ Following my protest with the referee, he admitted he was wrong, apologized and then added: ‘for me ngro is an insult like any other’.
Manchester United winger Antony has expressed how scoring against Liverpool provided a significant boost to his confidence and determination to live up to his high valuation.
The Brazilian player, who netted his first goal at Old Trafford this season during Sunday’s FA Cup match against Liverpool, described the experience as uplifting.
He acknowledged the importance of the goal in enhancing his morale and emphasised his commitment to proving himself on the pitch.
Speaking to reporters, the winger said: “It was a very important goal, it gave us the chance to go to extra time and try to win. Personally, it was a very important moment for me, I needed that goal. At no point did I stop thinking about it and working.
“It’s games like this that show our values and I believe this will motivate everyone for the season. It was a great game. Our team fought until the last minute. We showed the strength that United has in front of our fans. We have the possibility of winning another title for the club and we will fight for it.”
Since joining Manchester United from Ajax in 2022 for a hefty £85 million (€99 million), the 24-year-old winger has faced scrutiny for his performances, failing to meet the high expectations associated with his price tag. Despite criticism, the Brazilian player is determined to prove his worth on the field and redeem himself.
He has been quietly working on improving his game behind the scenes and is committed to repaying the transfer fee through his performances.
Antony added: “It has been a period of a lot of learning. I try to learn from each criticism and understand where I can improve. I have been working silently to evolve and show my football on the field. I have also been training my right foot to make it better. I know my potential and I know why Manchester hired me. I want to repay all of this on the field.”
Following the international break, Antony, the former Ajax standout, is set to return to action for Erik ten Hag’s squad. Their next match in the Premier League is scheduled against Brentford on March 30.
Following his second-place finish in the Men’s 100m semi-final at the 2023 African Games on March 18, 2024, Ghanaian sprinter Benjamin Azamati attributed his performance to the weather conditions in Ghana.
In a post-race interview, the US-based athlete explained that he had only arrived in Ghana a week before the event and needed more time to acclimate to the local climate.
Azamati expressed that the short timeframe affected his preparation and left him feeling fatigued during warm-ups. Despite these challenges, he remained focused on qualifying for the final and aimed to put his best effort forward.
“Having been there since only on Monday, at least I needed about two weeks to get used to the weather out here. So I think that was the problem. I got really tired when I was warming up, so I decided to just run the heat and just qualify.”
Azamati admitted that he did not have a ‘perfect race’ because he got his execution wrong.
“Not the perfect race for me. I feel like I didn’t execute well, but I will go sit with my coach and talk about it. I had a little bit of a tight hip flexor. I think I’ll go back and see the physio to work on that and see how we can do tomorrow.”
Benjamin Azamati secured a spot in the 100m final after clinching second place in the semi-finals with a time of 10.41s. He trailed behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who crossed the finish line first with a time of 10.23s.
The journalist responsible for provokingJurgen Klopp’s departure from a post-match interview has disclosed the subsequent actions of the irate Liverpool manager.
Klopp, visibly displeased following his team’s dramatic 4-3 loss to arch-rivals Manchester United in an intense FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford, faced inquiries about his team’s alleged lack of intensity in extra time, particularly as Amad Diallo secured a decisive 121st-minute victory.
Klopp said, before walking off: “Come on! You are obviously not in a great shape. I don’t have the nerve for this.” Niels Christian Frederiksen was asking the questions and he has told Tipsbladet of how tensions continued to run high after the cameras stopped rolling: “I was very surprised by it, and those standing around were scared, and they were almost pressed up against the wall like: ‘wow, what the hell just happened here?’ It continued after what was seen on TV. He continued down the hallway, where he yelled and screamed at me. I also followed him because I thought it was something strange. I was very surprised, while some looked very shocked, and they asked: ‘Are you okay?’ and of course I’m okay.
“I have interviewed Jurgen many times. I don’t know him personally, but I’ve been to Mainz several times when Leon Andreasen and Mohamed Zidan were there, and I have also interviewed him in Dortmund and many times during his time in Liverpool. So we don’t have a bad relationship at all. I know that when you’re one of the world’s best coaches, and you have been for years, it doesn’t come if you’re not the world’s worst loser. The premise of being a good coach is that you don’t like to lose and that you are a winner.”
Frederiksen added on the unfortunate incident: “I interpret it mostly as an expression of his terrible frustration that they lost to Manchester United in the manner it happened, where they were ahead twice and should have sealed the deal. His dream scenario was to play an FA Cup final at Wembley in his last match in England, and that’s been taken from him now. So I can understand he’s super frustrated. Then he got a question he didn’t think was appropriate.
It’s been a theme for them that they’ve had many injuries and many matches, which he has complained about. Then he got a question about why they didn’t have intensity in the game, and then he snapped. That’s fair enough. I have absolutely no problem with that. There will be absolutely no problems in the future. I can’t imagine that at all. When I interview him again, we’ll still be good friends – professionally speaking. I don’t think he holds a grudge, and I certainly don’t.”
Liverpool held the lead twice againstManchester United, both in regular time and after Harvey Elliott’s goal in extra time. However, they failed to maintain their advantage, leading to jubilant celebrations from their rivals as the Red Devils advanced to Wembley for a semi-final clash against surprise contender Coventry City.
Putin’s landslide win, with 87.8% of the vote according to exit polls, solidifies his already firm control over the country.
Putin’s triumph was underscored by his assertion that the outcome sends a clear message to the West, affirming Russia’s resolve to stand up against perceived threats and assert its influence, whether through military action or diplomatic channels.
At 71 years old, Putin is poised to extend his tenure with a new six-year term, surpassing Josef Stalin to become Russia’s longest-serving leader in over two centuries, if he completes the term.
However, international observers, including those from the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, have criticised the election, citing concerns over the imprisonment of political opponents and restrictions on free speech.
Despite the overwhelming victory for Putin, other candidates, such as Communist nominee Nikolai Kharitonov, newcomer Vladislav Davankov, and ultra-nationalist Leonid Slutsky, trailed far behind in the polls. These partia
l results confirm Putin’s continued dominance in Russian politics.
“We have many tasks ahead. But when we are consolidated—no matter who wants to intimidate us or suppress us—nobody has ever succeeded in history; they have not succeeded now, and they will not succeed ever in the future,” said Putin. Supporters chanted “Putin, Putin, Putin” when he appeared on stage and “Russia, Russia, Russia” after he had delivered his acceptance speech.
Following the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in a prison in the Arctic last month, thousands of his supporters took to the streets, both within Russia and abroad, to protest against President Vladimir Putin at polling stations. Putin, however, maintained that the election process in Russia was democratic and dismissed the impact of the protests inspired by Navalny on the election’s outcome.
In his first public remarks on Navalny’s death, Putin expressed condolences, describing it as a “sad event,” and acknowledged that he had been open to the idea of a prisoner exchange involving the opposition figure. When questioned by NBC, a U.S. television network, about the democratic nature of his re-election, Putin criticized the political and judicial systems of the United States.
“The whole world is laughing at what is happening (in the United States),” he said. “This is just a disaster, not a democracy.” “Is it democratic to use administrative resources to attack one of the candidates for the presidency of the United States, using the judiciary, among other things?” he asked, making an apparent reference to four criminal cases against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
The Russian election comes just over two years afterPutin triggered the deadliest European conflict since World War Two by ordering the invasion of Ukraine.
Erik ten Hag attributed Manchester United’sprevious struggles to refereeing decisions, particularly referencing a match against Arsenal earlier in the season, when discussing whether the recent victory over Liverpool could mark a turning point.
The FA Cup quarter-final win against Liverpool, secured with a 4-3 scoreline, was hailed as a significant achievement for Ten Hag’s team, which had faced challenges in maintaining consistency prior to this match.
Ten Hag expressed optimism that this triumph over their rivals could signal a shift in momentum for Manchester United. He emphasised that until now, the team hadn’t found the opportune moment to mount a comeback, alluding to past officiating controversies.
Speaking to reporters, Ten Hag said, “Could be but we missed so many opportunities. For instance, at Arsenal, in the fourth game of the season, in the 87th minute, we should have had a penalty on Rasmus Hojlund. Then we scored with Garnacho, which was disallowed and then we conceded a goal that should always have been disallowed. Such moments help you. Every team needs such moments and we never had that moment and this could be that moment.”
In the recent match, Antony, who had been struggling with form, found the back of the net for only the second time this season, leveling the score for his team in the 87th minute.
Amad Diallo later secured the victory with the winning goal, marking a memorable triumph for United. After the international break, the Premier League giants will resume action against Brentford in a league fixture on March 31st.
Mason Greenwood’s teammates at Manchester United are ready to welcome him back to Old Trafford after a successful loan spell in Spain, according to reports.
The 22-year-old forward has been absent from the Red Devils’ squad since January 2022 due to legal issues, which were resolved when charges against him were dropped in February 2023.
Following his departure from Manchester United, Greenwood joined Getafe on loan and has made a positive impact in La Liga. His performances have caught the attention of clubs like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, sparking rumours of a potential high-profile transfer in the summer of 2024.
Despite speculation about Greenwood’s future, Manchester United still hold him under contract until 2025. With Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who recently acquired a 25% stake in the club, indicating openness to Greenwood’s return, there’s a possibility for his comeback to Old Trafford.
Now, it’s being suggested that Greenwood’s former teammates would be open to reuniting with him on the pitch, signalling a willingness to work together again.
The Sun claims to have been told by a source that: “His team-mates would not be against him returning to Old Trafford. They know all about the background and understand how controversial it would be to have him back.
Their decision is a football one, pure and simple. United have struggled to score goals this season and they need a player like Mason. They’re watching him score and create goals for Getafe every week.”
Greenwood has found stability in Spain alongside his partner, Harriet, and their infant daughter. Despite this, he has refrained from making any public statements about his future plans.
Previously, the idea of returning to Old Trafford with a fresh start was met with resistance from influential figures within the Manchester United women’s team.

“The Committee was overly satisfied with Otto’s performance for which reason he was recommended to the Executive Council for approval,” President Simeon-Okraku added.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo have hailed the recent visa waiver pact between their nations, citing a notable surge in air travel and trade activity.
The agreement, effective November 1, 2023, permits citizens of both countries to visit for up to 90 days without needing a visa.
At the Bi-National Committee meeting in Johannesburg, President Ramaphosa lauded the visa waiver’s positive influence on bilateral ties.

Renowned media personality Captain Smart has taken a subtle jab at Apostle Lilian Kumah, the widow of deputy finance minister, John Kumah.
The Onua TV presenter has advised her to take lessons from the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Lydia Seyram Alhassan and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Mfantseman constituency, Ophelia Hayford.
Lydia Seyram Alhassan and Ophelia Hayford’s political journey commenced under tragic circumstances following the untimely deaths of their husbands, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko and Ekow Quansah Hayford, respectively.
According to Captain Smart, widows Lydia Alhassan and Ophelia Hayford refrained from seeking public attention or exposing themselves to the public eye.
“Can you see how widows Lydia Alhassan and Ophelia are mourning their husbands? Have you seen them in public making noise? Did you ever see them talk about the deaths of their husbands? They have kept themselves as descent, well-cultured, and trained women. Learn from them,” he added.
The ongoing rift between Captain Smart and Apostle Lilian Kumah was initiated by Captain Smart’s allegations that John Kumah was deliberately poisoned due to his political ambitions, which he claimed posed a threat to certain party leaders.
In response, the widow refuted the claims and lodged a complaint with the police, demanding evidence from Captain Smart to support his allegations.
Reacting to the arrest complaint, Captain Smart emphasised that this challenging period is a time for the widow to isolate herself and mourn her husband, rather than engaging in lengthy discussions to attract attention.
John Kumah passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
Per reports he collapsed in his office and was promptly transported to a hospital for medical attention.
Subsequently, due to a deterioration in his condition, he was flown out of the country.

Kylian Mbappé is taking legal action against a kebab shop owner for using his name in the description of one of their sandwiches.
Mohamed Henni, a Marseille-based influencer known in the French football world, recently opened a kebab shop.
The description of one of his sandwiches, the Klüb kebab, includes a reference to it being made with a “baker round bread, as round as Mbappé’s skull.”
Henni, a Marseille supporter with a large following on Instagram, received a certified letter on Wednesday morning from Delphine Verheyden, Mbappé’s lawyer, on behalf of KMA, the company managing the player’s sponsors, merchandise, and image rights.
The letter requests that Henni remove Mbappé’s name from his menu within eight days, warning of potential legal action for using his name without consent for commercial purposes.
The influencer, clearly shocked by Mbappé’s actions, reacted on his Instagram account.
“Are you not ashamed? You have nothing else to do. Suing me for something so futile? It is incredible. I can’t believe it!” Henni told his followers.
Dimitri Payet, the former Olympique Marseille andWest Ham star, currently playing at Vasco da Gama, is also part of one sandwich description: “A crepe as loaded as Payet.”
Barcelona may entertain the idea of allowing Ronald Araújo to depart if they receive an offer nearing €100m for the talented center-back, according to sources close to the situation.
Bayern Munich had shown interest in Araújo in January, and Barcelona anticipates the German club to return with a bid during the upcoming transfer window.
Additionally, a significant Premier League club is keeping tabs on the situation and is prepared to make a move should Barcelona signal their willingness to negotiate.

While Araújo remains a regular starter forBarcelona, the club acknowledges the necessity of generating funds this summer, with Araújo being among the players with the highest market value in the squad.
Just as the controversy over the religious leader’s prophecy regarding the late deputy finance minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, John Kumah, was beginning to subside, the founder of Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, has made another prophecy of doom concerning a member of a political party based in Kumasi, referred to as P.P.N.
The prophet, in a Facebook post sighted by TIG Post, revealed that around 5am today, March 13, 2024, he had a vision where he saw that “another great one fell on his neck in the P.P.N. political party.”He “saw two people,” he said.
In the said vision, the Prophetic Hill leader stated that he “heard Chaiman chairman, why soooo SOON. We see in bits and prophecy in bits. I saw two people.”
He advised the party to remain vigilant and careful as they seek divine guidance, emphasising the urgent need to address the impending danger.
“There is an evil hanging around; let them seek the face of the Lord if they can and also be WATCHFUL…..AND GUIDED SAYS ELOHIM…AMEN…
Over what appears as jabs to critics who will chide him for always foreseeing such occurrences, he jabbed that they ask. However, to show the severity of the matter at hand, he wrote in caps,REGION ASANTEEEEEEE…REGION ASANTEEEE..WOKE UP AND PRAYYYYYYYY…AMEN N AMEN.. he said.”
Barely few days before the backlash and controversies surrounding the religious leader’s prophecy about the death of the late deputy finance minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, John Kumah, could die out, the leader and founder of Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, has again given another prophecy of doom concerning a Kumasi-based member of a political party he calls P.P.N.
The prophet, in a Facebook post sighted by TIG Post, revealed that around 5am today, March 13, 2024, he had a vision where he saw that “another great one fell on his neck in the P.P.N. political party.”

This remarkable achievement surpasses the previous record of 27 consecutive wins held by Welsh Premier League team The New Saints during the 2016–17 season.
Al Hilal’s victory, a 2-0 triumph over Karim Benzema’s Al Ittihad, also earned them a spot in the Asian Champions League semifinals with a convincing 4-0 aggregate score.
“This is truly an incredible achievement and I want to thank everyone at the club for their part in this momentous winning record,” Al Hilal coach Jorge Jesus said.
“As I have said throughout this period, however, records do not matter as much as trophies. It is up to everyone at Al Hilal to ensure that we close out the season as Roshn Saudi League champions and meet our targets in the cup competitions. Only then can we truly celebrate.”
Jesus added that he doesn’t know if he will continue in charge next season.
“I don’t know my future,” he said. “I have a contract with Al Hilal until the end of June. In football, everything changes very quickly. What I want most now is to continue winning with Al Hilal. Now that we have the [Asian Champions League] semifinals, we are also well placed in the championship. Then we’ll see.”
Despite losing Neymar to an ACL injury in October, Al Hilal remains dominant in the Saudi Pro League, holding a commanding 12-point lead over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.
Alongside three other clubs, Al Hilal was taken over by the Saudi state’s sovereign wealth fund (PIF) in June 2023.
The team’s success has been propelled by Aleksandar Mitrovic’s exceptional scoring ability, with the Serbian striker netting 29 goals in 28 league and continental competition appearances.
Key contributions from players like Kalidou Koulibaly, Rúben Neves, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic have also been instrumental in their impressive run.
This streak includes 16 victories in the Saudi League, three in the domestic cup, and eight in the Asian Champions League.
Al Hilal’s last non-winning result was a 1-1 draw against league rival Damac on Sept. 21.
Inter Miami coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino expressed admiration for Lionel Messi’s continued hunger for success, stating that Messi’s unwavering desire to win remains unchanged from their time together at Barcelona.
Martino, who previously coached Messi at Barcelona during the 2013–14 season and later with Argentina’s national team for two years, revealed that Messi’s commitment to excellence has endured over the years.
“The number one thing they maintain throughout their entire career is the way they compete and the desire to win regardless of where they play,” Martino said of Messi.
“That is a big trait of his. I’m not saying that it surprises me because this is the third spell that I have managed him.
“But today I still see it in the same way as the first time in Barcelona, the desire to go for everything that falls on his path.”
At the age of 36, Lionel Messi achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the most decorated football player in history, clinching his 44th trophy when Inter Miami secured the League Cup title in August 2023.
Following two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, the World Cup winner joined Inter Miami in June as a free agent, adding another chapter to his illustrious career.
Lazio announced on Wednesday that Maurizio Sarri has stepped down as coach, with assistant Giovanni Martusciello set to take over his role.
“S.S. Lazio announces that Maurizio Sarri has handed in his resignation as head coach of the first team,” the club said in a statement. “The club would like to thank the coach for his achievements and for the work he has done, wishing him the best of luck in his professional and personal life.
“At the same time, the club communicates that it has decided to entrust Giovanni Martusciello with the technical leadership.”
Italian media outlets reported that 65-year-old Maurizio Sarri submitted his resignation to the management of Lazio on Tuesday. Sarri has been in charge of Lazio since 2021.
The team’s recent performance has been disappointing, culminating in a 2-1 home loss to Udinese. Currently, Lazio sits ninth in the Serie A standings, accumulating 40 points from 28 games.
Their form has declined significantly, with five losses in their last six matches across all competitions. Sarri took over Lazio in June 2021, succeeding Simone Inzaghi, who departed for Inter Milan.
Despite rumours suggesting Sarri’s possible dismissal after a 3-0 defeat toBayern Munich in the Champions League, Lazio clarified that his contract was set to expire in 2025.
Former Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has expressed his opinion on former President John Mahama’s choice of Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyeman as his running mate ahead of the 2024 elections.
Even though she has a good profile and doesn’t seem to have stepped on any toes in the political landscape, not many are excited about her candidature.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show on March 13, 2024, Nana Ankomea noted that the Professor’s retention as John Mahama’s running mate ads no excitement or makes no difference in John Mahama’s campaign and road to the Jubilee House journey.
He said, “the woman the NDC has appointed as flagbearer is a good person but listening to the concerns of people, there is really no excitement about her candidature. To me, it’s not exciting; it brings no excitement When she was introduced in 2020, there was some kind of excitement because everyone thought she would introduce something new, but she couldn’t even deliver.”.
He added that “her first ticket as running-mate in 2020 came with some exhilaration, as many were hopeful of a change and some spice and ‘ difference’ from her but “even in her own region, the Central Region. So we hope this time she adds a touch and helps NDC’s bid but look at her, she’s a good woman so let’s wait and watch how she’s able to spice up this year’s campaign.
In any case, I’m happy about her candidature, but I doubt she would really bring anything new to John Mahama’s campaign” he added
Former President John Dramani Mahama announced Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 elections on February 28, 2024.
This marks the second time Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has been chosen for this position, having previously partnered with Mahama in the 2020 elections.
TheNational Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed her nomination, highlighting their dedication to inclusivity, diversity, and the promotion of women in leadership roles. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, a former Minister of Education, brings extensive experience to the NDC’s presidential ticket.
Liverpool’s American owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have confirmed Michael Edwards has been appointed as the organisation’s CEO of football, with his initial challenge being to recruit new leadership for the Premier League club’s football operations.
Edwards was previously Liverpool’s sporting director and was credited with overhauling the club’s recruitment strategy and identifying Jürgen Klopp for the manager’s role in 2015.
He left the club in 2022, but will now return as part of the FSG wider setup, where he will be tasked with rebuilding the football operations team after Klopp leaves Liverpool at the end of the season.
FSG struggled to replace Edwards after he left, with both Julian Ward and Jorg Schmadtke lasting less than 12 months in the sporting director role after the 44-year-old’s departure.
But Edwards will now return and oversee a new era at Liverpool and he hinted that FSG could make a move to take over another football club.
Sources have told ESPN that Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes has been lined up to fill the vacant sporting director role at Liverpool at the end of the season.
Sources added that Edwards has been offered opportunities by Chelsea and Manchester United since leaving Liverpool but he rejected those advances in order to wait for the right opportunity.
Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey is set to miss the upcoming friendly matches for the Black Stars during the March international break.
The national team is gearing up to face Nigeria and Uganda as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
While most regular players will be called up for the matches, Partey will be given the opportunity to sit out due to his recent recovery from injury.
Despite his absence, sources indicate that Partey remains dedicated to the Black Stars and will respond to future call-ups.
Additionally, the Ghana Football Association is expected to announce a new head coach for the team this week, who will then select the squad for the friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda scheduled for March 22nd and 26th,respectively.
Athletic Bilbao’s forward Nico Williams has been warned about a potential move to Chelsea this summer amid reports of the Premier League club’s interest in him.
The 21-year-old, who has had an impressive season with six goals and 12 assists, recently extended his contract with Bilbao until 2027, easing immediate concerns about his future.
However, Chelsea is reportedly keeping an eye on Williams and might trigger his £43 million release clause in the upcoming transfer window.
Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman has advised Williams against joining Chelsea, expressing doubts about the club’s stability due to uncertainties surrounding their managerial situation and the surplus of players vying for regular playing time.
In an interview with Betfred, McManaman stated, “If I’m being completely honest, I think he’d be mad to go to Chelsea because you just don’t know what you’re going to get with them. They’ve got too many players, with many of them lacking game time, and the club is all over the place.”
National President of theGlaucoma Patients Association of Ghana,Harrison K. Abutiate, has called on the government to eliminate taxes on glaucoma medications.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Abutiate expressed concerns about the difficulties faced in accessing treatment due to the high costs of medication, which are exacerbated by taxes and fluctuating exchange rates.
“One of the reasons prices are high is because of the high taxes and exchange rate. Taxes on them are about fifty percent of the cost of the drugs. If you add the freight charges and importer margin, we will be talking about almost 75 to 80 percent of the charges.
So, if the government reduces the tax by 50 percent, it will be affordable—probably a third of what we are paying now,” he said.
During the World Glaucoma Awareness Week event hosted by the Trust Specialist Hospital in Osu, Accra, the President of the Glaucoma Patients Association made a plea.
He urged the government to enhance street lighting and ensure the coverage of all open drains to prevent individuals with vision impairments from accidentally falling into ditches.
“Most people driving may have vision challenges, but glaucoma patients have additional problems because they are losing their peripheral vision… it will also help a lot if there is adequate street lighting, especially at night. A lot of pavements and edges of bridges are also not marked with reflectors, and this also creates problems… there are so many accidents just because many cannot see properly when driving or crossing,” he said.
According to data from the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), glaucoma accounts for 19.4 percent of all eye-related diseases in Ghana, ranking second only to cataracts, which make up 54.5 percent of cases of blindness in the country.
Dennis Aggrey Ampiah, who has experienced vision challenges, shared his journey of overcoming the condition and advised Ghanaians against self-medication.
He emphasised the importance of seeking medical attention early when noticing signs of vision decline. Additionally, he cautioned against the incorrect use of eyeglasses.
“Be cautious of quacks who parade with all kinds of concoctions, claiming to cure glaucoma and other eye diseases. Avoid buying cheap eyeglasses from questionable sources and report eye problems to the hospital immediately to avoid future vision loss… treasure your eyes. Don’t wait till you lose your sight,” he said.
Glaucoma, as the 2021 IAPB facts state, is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and most prevalent in people of African descent. About 6 million people have glaucoma and more than half a million have already been blinded by it in Africa.
Glaucoma has an earlier onset in Africans and is more aggressive in its course than in its Caucasian counterparts. In most of Africa, only about 1 in 20 of those with the disease are aware, with over 50% being unilaterally blind on presentation.
Several healthcare professionals at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, including senior doctors, have accused the government of selling the land on which their bungalows are situated to private developers.
Chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association, Dr. Michael Leat, stated that approximately 30 doctors, including specialists and department heads, along with other hospital staff such as administrators, police, and military personnel, have been given a one-week notice to vacate their bungalows.
In an interview with Adom FM on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Dr. Leat explained that although they were aware of the land’s sale to private developers, they expected to be relocated only if alternative housing was provided.
“For about a year now, doctors, hospital administrators and commanders leaving Danyame have known that the land we were staying on had been sold to private developers. But we resolved that until they get a place for our doctors, no doctor should move.
“Only for them to come and tell us yesterday (Monday, March 11, 2024) that they have given us one week to find somewhere to go and live.
He added, “As it stands now, as the chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association, nobody has told us that they have a place for us to relocate to. And also, as a member of the Accommodation Committee of Okomfo Anokye, there is nothing like an alternative for the doctors and other affected staff.”.
Contrary to the allegations, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has denied that the land in question has been sold to private developers.
During an interview on Adom FM, the regional minister clarified that the land is among those the court has ruled should be returned to the Ashanti stool.
Ghanaian media personality and host of the morning show on Angel TV, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, has criticisedCaptain Smart for what he perceives as spreading false information regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of the late former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, John Kumah.
During the Angel TV morning show on March 12, 2024, Okatakyie slammed Captain Smart for watching and doing nothing when he claims to have seen the late MP’s f being poisoned.
He said Capt. Smart is mad and has mental problems for allowing such atrocious acts under his watch.
Afrifa’s comments come after Captain Smart alleged that Dr. Kumah died from food poisoning and suggested that it was a planned act.
Captain Smart claimed that the incident occurred at an event alongside the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Chairman Wontumi, and that Dr. Kumah had been in India for treatment following the attempt on his life.
In response to this, the Angel TV morning host blasted Captain Smart, labelling him “mad; you have a mental problem. If you could watch on, stand aloof for someone’s food to be poisoned without doing anything to stop it. then you are mad.
You see, Capt. is telling lies. If Captain Smart claims he was there when the poisoning was happening and he did nothing to stop it, then he is mad,” he fumed.
Capt. Smart is an accomplice in the alleged death of the Ejisu MP, according to Afrifa; hence, he has to be arrested.
“One of the poisoning incidents happened in Kumasi and the other in Tamale. He is telling lies. How did the captain know it was poison. He has to be arrested. It means he is an accomplice,” he said.
One of the poisoning incidents happened in Kumasi and the other in Tamale. He is telling lies. How did the captain know it was poison. He has to be arrested. It means he is an accomplice.
Not leaving Chairman Wontumi out, Afrifa lambasted the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman for not taking legal action against the alleged culprit in the poisoning incident.
Afrifa claims that “Wontumi released a statement confirming that he was poisoned. If he was told by his doctors that he was poisoned and he made no efforts to arrest the criminals, then he also has a mental problem.”.
IMANI Centre for Policy and Education has taken legal action against the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice over concerns about the appointments of heads of various uniformed security agencies to the Supreme Court.
Their concern stems from a pattern where incoming governments force the termination of these heads’ appointments, sometimes before they reach the statutory retirement age.
Director of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Professor Kwesi Aning, in partnership with the plaintiffs, has filed a lawsuit requesting the Supreme Court to declare that, according to Articles 200, 202(1), 202(2), 202(3), 205, 207(1), 207(2), 207(3), 190(1), 191,196, 199, and 269 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the President does not have the authority to remove heads of these agencies unless there is proven misconduct or misbehaviour.
These offices included those of the Chief Fire Officer of the Fire Service, Inspector General of Police, Director General of the Prisons Service and Comptroller General of Immigration Service.
Again, the two are seeking a declaration that …”The President of the Republic of Ghana, upon assumption of office, does not have the power to make a fresh appointment to the office of the Chief Fire Officer of the Fire Service; Inspector General of Police; Director General of Prisons Service and Comptroller General of the Immigration Service unless the immediate holder of the office is deceased…..”.
They are also seeking relief, asserting that the appointment of heads of uniformed security services by a newly elected and inaugurated president is unconstitutional.
Further elaborating on their argument, they pointed out alarming trends where incoming governments force the termination of these appointments, disregarding the constitutional rights of the appointees.
“In some cases, these removals occur before the individual occupants of the office reach the statutory retirement age.
“For instance, in 2017, the then Director-General of the Prisons Service, Mr. Emmanuel Yao Adzator, was asked to proceed on leave at the age of 54 and subsequently another was appointed in his stead,” part of the writ dated March 11, 2024.
Consequently, they are requesting a consequential order that would bar the President of the Republic from dismissing the appointment of those holding the positions of Chief Fire Officer of the Fire Service, Inspector General of Police, Director-General of Prisons Service, and Comptroller General of Immigration Service, unless there is clear and documented evidence of misconduct or misbehaviour against these individuals, or in the event of their retirement, resignation, death, or incapacity to perform the duties of the position due to physical or mental illness.
National Tenants’ Union (NATUG) of Ghana has called for the release of the names of beneficiaries under theNational Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS), categorised by regions and communities.
“We humbly request the immediate publication of the names of the beneficiaries by regions and communities to help us shape the policy for the purpose for which it was made,” the union said.
This call follows former Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso Boakye’s, announcement that 1,492 individuals received a total disbursement of GH₵19 million through the NRAS.
However, the National Tenants’ Union of Ghana expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of specific details regarding the beneficiaries as presented to the House.
To enhance transparency, the Union is demanding the immediate publication of beneficiary names organised by regions and communities.
This, they say, would help stakeholders assess and contribute to shaping the policy for more effective implementation and impact.
Ministry of Works and Housing, the NRAS
Furthermore, the union is calling on the Ministry of Housing to initiate a stakeholder engagement process and temporarily halt the NRAS.
“We request the Ministry of Housing to call for stakeholder engagement and further call for immediate suspension of the scheme for a full-scale review to correct some anomalies we have found consequential to the success of the implementation of the scheme,” parts of the statement read.
This pause would facilitate a thorough review to address identified issues that could potentially hinder the scheme’s success.
Among the concerns raised are the high 24% interest rate on the rent loan, non-refundable loan processing fees of GHC100.00, and the duration for which rent advance payments are provided to beneficiaries.
Deputy minister-designate for Works and Housing, Dr. Prince Hamidu Armah, has revealed the government’s intentions of partnering with the private sector in the completion of the abandoned Saglemi Housing project.
Dr. Armah highlighted the importance of finishing the project, considering the significant investment already made by the state.
He said the government has established a technical committee to expedite the completion of the housing project during his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting.
“The state has already invested so much money in Saglemi, and I think that it is important that we bring the original intent of the project to fruition.
I understand that the ministry has already constituted a technical working committee to look at private sector participation in offloading the project and to ensure that the project is completed for it to be used,” Dr. Armah said.
The Saglemi Housing project was initiated in 2012 under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama government for the delivery of 5,000 housing units at a total cost of US$200 million under an Engineering-Procurement-Contracting (EPC) Agreement with Messrs Construtora OAS Ghana Limited.
According to the government, by the end of the stipulated project execution period in 2016, only 1,506 out of the planned 5,000 housing units had been initiated and approximately US$196 million, representing 98% of total project funds, had been expended.
Thepopular Ugandan dance group, Ghetto Kids, made an appearance at Stamford Bridge during Chelsea’s Premier League match against Newcastle on Monday, March 11, 2024.
As part of their tour of the United Kingdom, the renowned dance troupe showcased their talents, grooving to a rendition of Chelsea’s anthem.
Chelsea shared a video on their social media platforms capturing the energetic performance of the group, as they showcased both their collective and individual dance moves while the club’s anthem echoed through the stadium.
In the match itself, Chelsea clinched a 3-2 victory over Newcastle, maintaining their position at 11th on the league table.
Nicholas Jackson opened the scoring for Chelsea, deftly redirecting a low-driven pass from Cole Palmer in the first half.
Alexander Isak equalised for Newcastle with a skillful curling shot from the edge of the box, but Cole Palmer swiftly responded with an impressive goal of his own.
Chelsea seemed to seal the win when Ukrainian forward Mykhailo Mudryk scored a well-executed goal after coming off the bench, making it 3-1.
However, a goal from Jacob Murphy in the 90th minute set up a tense finish, with six minutes of injury time added. Nevertheless, Chelsea managed to hold on and secure their11th win of the season.
Ghana’s Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has pointed fingers at the Ghana Cycling Federation for the equipment malfunction that affected Ghanaian cyclists at the African Games.
The incident occurred when the country’s national cycling champion, Michael Naaba, had to withdraw from the competition due to a faulty bicycle. Naaba revealed that the tube connected to his bike exploded shortly after he started the race, forcing him to exit.
Naaba further disclosed that he had been using an old tube for training since there were no provisions for new ones for the competition.
This revelation, along with similar complaints from other cyclists, prompted heavy criticism from the public directed at the Sports Ministry and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the African Games.
However, in response to the backlash, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif absolved both the ministry and the LOC of any responsibility for the equipment failure.
Ussif attributed the blame to the Ghana Cycling Federation, stating that the ministry and the LOC had requested all necessary equipment from the federations beforehand.
“Basketball submitted their list, and we went through it with them and procured all the equipment for them worth close to a million dollars, just like other Federations,” the Minister said.
“So if you’re the Cycling Federation, and you knew that you needed fibre-made bicycles and not aluminium bicycles, it is your responsibility to submit your list to us, and we will get them. If we can not get all, at least we will buy some,” Mustapha Ussif said.
As foodborne illnesses and intentional food poisoning incidents continue to capture public attention, concerns about food safety and security have become increasingly significant.
Throughout history, various incidents have underscored these concerns. Examples include the Aqua Tofana Poisonings in 17th-century Italy, the Michigan Wine Tampering Incident in 1973, and the Burger King Poisonings in 1997, all in the USA. Additionally, the Tylenol Murders in 1982 and the Tainted Medicine Incident in Haiti in 2019 further highlight the issue.
Individual cases, such as the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko in 2006 and Viktor Yushchenko in 2004, serve as stark reminders of deliberate tampering with food and its dire consequences.
In this article, we delve into the distinction between accidental contamination and deliberate tampering of food, shedding light on the challenges and implications for public health and safety.
Accidental contamination occurs when harmful substances or foreign objects inadvertently enter the food supply chain during production, processing, handling, or storage. Factors contributing to accidental contamination include improper food handling practices, sanitation lapses, cross-contamination, and equipment failures.
On the other hand, deliberate tampering involves the intentional introduction of harmful substances or foreign objects into food or beverages with the intent to harm, deceive, or sabotage. Motives for deliberate tampering vary and may include extortion, terrorism, revenge, or financial gain.
Understanding the differences between accidental contamination and deliberate tampering is crucial for addressing food safety concerns and safeguarding public health.
In the realms of public health and forensic investigations, differentiating between food poisoning and poisoning of food is critical for effective response, treatment, and legal proceedings. Although both involve harmful substances entering the body through food consumption, they diverge significantly in terms of causative factors, symptoms, and investigative approaches.
Causative Factors: Food poisoning typically results from consuming contaminated food or beverages, which can stem from various origins such as bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli), viruses (e.g., norovirus, hepatitis A), parasites, bacterial toxins (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium botulinum), and chemical contaminants (e.g., pesticides, heavy metals). In contrast, poisoning of food entails the deliberate introduction of toxic substances into food or drinks with the intention of causing harm or death, including poisonous chemicals (e.g., cyanide, arsenic), drugs (e.g., opioids, benzodiazepines), or other harmful compounds.
Symptoms: Symptoms of food poisoning vary depending on the causative agent but commonly include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, and dehydration. Onset may be rapid (within hours) in cases involving bacterial toxins or gradual (over days) in bacterial or viral infections. Poisoning of food can lead to a diverse range of symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, dizziness, confusion, seizures, difficulty breathing, and even coma or death in severe instances. Symptoms may emerge suddenly and severely, particularly with potent toxins.
Clinical and Forensic Investigation: Clinical assessment of food poisoning entails evaluating symptoms, conducting diagnostic tests (e.g., stool cultures, blood tests, imaging studies), and identifying the causative agent. Treatment typically involves supportive care like fluid replacement, antiemetic medications, and antibiotics for bacterial infections. Forensic investigation of food poisoning incidents may include identifying the contaminated food source, tracing its distribution, and determining the contamination’s origin through epidemiological studies and food testing. This process aids in preventing further outbreaks and may lead to regulatory actions against food producers or suppliers.
In suspected food poisoning cases, clinical evaluation focuses on identifying and managing the toxic effects of ingested substances, employing measures like administering antidotes or respiratory support and monitoring for complications. Forensic investigation of intentionally contaminated food involves thorough analysis of the tainted food, including chemical testing to identify and trace the toxin’s source. Law enforcement agencies may conduct interviews, surveillance, and forensic analysis to identify suspects and establish motives.
Remedies: If you suspect food poisoning or the poisoning of food, it’s essential to take prompt action to protect your health and seek appropriate medical attention. It is essential to seek medical attention immediately, especially if symptoms are severe or if there is a possibility of poisoning. Keep track of symptoms, including when they started, their severity, and any other relevant information. This documentation can be valuable for healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating the condition. Preserve evidence, if possible, save any leftover food or packaging from the suspected source of poisoning. This evidence may be useful for identifying the contaminant and investigating the incident further.
If you suspect that a particular food item is contaminated, avoid consuming it and take precautions to prevent further contamination. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, clean any surfaces or utensils that may have come into contact with the contaminated food, and dispose of any remaining food safely. If you are experiencing symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhoea, drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Replenish electrolytes with oral rehydration solutions if necessary. Follow any instructions or treatment recommendations provided by healthcare professionals. This may include taking medications, receiving intravenous fluids, or undergoing further medical tests or evaluation.
Postmortem-Toxicology: Forensic toxicology plays a critical role in determining whether food poisoning or poisoning of food contributed to a death during autopsy. While it is generally efficient, several factors can affect its accuracy and reliability. Forensic toxicologists rely on proper sample collection to obtain evidence of poisoning.
Samples may include blood, urine, gastric contents, cerebrospinal fluid, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, vitreous humour, tissues, organs (liver, heart, lungs, kidney, brain), hair, nails and food remnants from the gastrointestinal tract. It’s crucial for these samples to be collected promptly and stored properly to prevent degradation or contamination.
Forensic toxicologists employ various analytical methods to identify and measure toxic substances in biological and food samples, including gas chromatography, mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography, and immunoassays. The selection of a technique depends on the suspected toxins and the required sensitivity for detection.
The interpretation of toxicology findings necessitates expertise in pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and forensic science. Toxicologists evaluate factors such as the concentration of detected toxins, their potential sources, the individual’s medical background, and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Postmortem changes, such as the redistribution and metabolism of drugs or toxins, can complicate forensic toxicology analysis. These alterations may influence the concentration of detected toxins in biological samples, necessitating careful interpretation by forensic toxicologists.
Forensic toxicology methods have specific detection limits, which means they may not identify toxins present at low concentrations. Toxicologists consider these limits when interpreting results, particularly in cases of suspected low-dose poisoning. Collaboration between forensic toxicologists, forensic pathologists, coroners, law enforcement agencies, and other experts enhances the efficiency and reliability of forensic investigations.
In summary, while both food poisoning and poisoning of food involve harm resulting from ingesting contaminated substances, they differ in causative agents, symptoms, and investigative strategies. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for healthcare professionals, public health authorities, and law enforcement agencies to effectively respond to and prevent such incidents, thereby safeguarding public health and ensuring justice for victims.
Forensic toxicology methods play a vital role in determining whether food poisoning or poisoning of food contributed to a death during autopsy.
However, the accuracy and reliability of results depend on factors such as the type of sample analysed, the chosen analytical techniques, interpretation of findings, postmortem changes, and detection limits.
Thorough consideration of these factors allows forensic toxicologists to offer valuable insights into cases involving suspected food-related poisoning, aiding in the pursuit ofjustice and ensuring public safety.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s late heroics couldn’t rescue Al-Nassr from elimination in the AFC Champions League against Al-Ain, decided by penalties.
Despite having a home advantage and trailing 1-0 on aggregate, Al-Nassr faced an uphill battle. Soufiane Rahimi haunted them with two first-half goals, adding to his decisive strike in the first leg. Abdulrahman Ghareeb’s stoppage-time goal gave Al-Nassr hope before halftime.
The second half saw Otavio equalise, benefiting from Al-Ain goalkeeper Khalid Eisa’s errors. Cristiano Ronaldo missed a golden opportunity, but Al-Nassr managed to force extra time, with Alex Telles scoring to make it 3-2.
However, a red card for Ayman Ahmed turned the tide, and Al-Ain capitalised to score again. Ronaldo’s late penalty brought hope, but Al-Nassr fell short in the shootout, with Otavio missing a crucial spot-kick.
Despite Rahimi’s standout performance and Eisa’s errors, Al-Nassr couldn’t overturn the deficit. The goalkeeping errors proved costly, leaving Al-Nassr disappointed at being knocked out in the quarterfinals.
After this intense battle, Al-Nassr faces Al-Ahli Saudi Arabia in a Pro League fixture, with Ronaldo’s team currently trailing leaders Al-Hilal by12 points in the standings.
Premier League clubs agreed to prioritise their efforts around a new financial system, the league said on Monday, after no agreement was reached during the shareholders’ meeting.
British media reported that the league failed to agree to a new financial settlement at the meeting on Monday as the planned vote was scrapped when it became clear it would not be supported by the required majority of 14 clubs.
“At a Premier League shareholders’ meeting today, clubs agreed to prioritise the swift development and implementation of a new league-wide financial system,” the league said in a statement.
“Alongside this, Premier League clubs also re-confirmed their commitment to securing a sustainably funded financial agreement with the EFL, subject to the new financial system being formally approved by clubs.”
The British government issued a warning to English Premier League clubs, stating that they had to either agree to a new financial agreement with Football League (EFL) teams or face having one imposed on them by an independent Football Regulator.
The Premier League said, “The league and clubs have reaffirmed their commitment to the wider game, with a distribution of £1.6 billion ($2.05 billion) to all levels of football over the current three-year cycle.”
Lecce has terminated the contract of managerRoberto D’Aversa following an altercation where he head-butted an opposing player, Verona striker Thomas Henry, at the conclusion of their recent 1-0 home loss to Hellas Verona over the weekend.
The club issued a statement on Monday, denouncing the incident and confirming D’Aversa’s dismissal.
“After the events that took place at the end of the Lecce – Verona match, U.S. Lecce announces that it has relieved coach Roberto D’Aversa of his duties,” the club said in a statement.
During the match, both D’Aversa and Henry were given red cards.

Following the incident, the manager, who arrived at Lecce in June 2023, issued an apology, stating that his players had been provoked throughout the latter stages of the game.
Lecce has managed to secure victory in only five out of their 28 league matches.
Currently positioned 15th in the league with 25 points, they are just one point above the relegation zone. Verona’s recent win has propelled them to 13th place with 26 points, surpassing Lecce in the standings.
Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro expressed confidence in the club’s ability to sustain success even if Xabi Alonso departs in the summer, stating that their achievements won’t crumble without him.
Leverkusen looks poised to break Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance in the Bundesliga this season under Alonso’s leadership.
Their recent 3-0 triumph over Wolfsburg marked their 21st win of the season, maintaining a comfortable 10-point lead at the top of the table.
The team remains unbeaten in 36 matches across all competitions this season, boasting the best defensive record in the Bundesliga, conceding just 16 goals in 25 games, second only to Bayern in scoring.
Despite Alonso’s rising popularity and links to clubs like Liverpool and Bayern, Carro assured that Leverkusen is ready for any changes that may come.
“We’re happy that he’s here, but Xabi Alonso is a puzzle piece. It’s not like everything will fall apart when he’s not here,” Carro said in an interview with DAZN.
“We have a top squad, we have a coaching staff, [sporting director] Simon Rolfes … Therefore, most of the people who are responsible for the success are here, independently of Xabi Alonso.
“Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has said he is confident the club can maintain its success should Xabi Alonso leave in the summer, adding that “everything will fall apart when he’s not here.”
Under Xabi Alonso’s guidance, Leverkusen is on track to end Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance in the Bundesliga this season. Their recent 3-0 victory over Wolfsburg marked their 21st win of the season, maintaining a commanding 10-point lead at the league’s summit.
The team’s unbeaten streak spans 36 games across all competitions this season, showcasing their formidable form. Leverkusen boasts the league’s strongest defence, conceding just 16 goals in 25 matches, while only Bayern has scored more.
Alonso’s success has garnered significant attention, making him a highly sought-after coach in Europe.
Rumours link him with moves to Liverpool and Bayern. However, Leverkusen’s CEO, Fernando Carro, assures the club that it is prepared for any potential changes.
“We’re happy that he’s here, but Xabi Alonso is a puzzle piece. It’s not like everything will fall apart when he’s not here,” Carro said in an interview with DAZN.
“We have a top squad, we have a coaching staff, [sporting director] Simon Rolfes … Therefore, most of the people who are responsible for the success are here, independently of Xabi Alonso.”
Real Madrid secured the 19-year-old from Fenerbahçe for €15m last summer, but he has only managed to play 93 minutes across all competitions this season due to injuries.
Despite limited playing time, Güler made a notable contribution by scoring in a 4-0 victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday, coming on as a substitute towards the end of the match.
Speaking after the game, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti said: “He is a great talent, he worked a lot, with more intensity. Obviously, he will have a future here at Real Madrid because he is a great talent.”
However, there’s a growing sense that Güler may not find many opportunities with Los Blancos next year due to stiff competition within the squad, particularly with the addition of Brazilian sensation Endrick from Palmeiras and the potential signing of Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé.
Consequently, Milan is reviving their efforts to bring in the Turkish international, having lost out to Madrid in securing his signature last year.
Milan aims to leverage their positive relationship with the Madrid board to secure Güler on loan, following the successful three-year loan spell of Brahim Díaz at the San Siro.
The Rossoneri also seek to include a buyout clause in Güler’s loan agreement and intend to convince him to make a permanent move once he settles into the Milan setup.
Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has urged the media to highlight the positive aspects of the ongoing Africa Games in Ghana.
However, there have been reports of disorganisation in some areas of the event recently.
These include incidents such as a power outage during a football match last weekend and complaints from athletes regarding self-funded training or the use of outdated kits.
Despite these challenges, Minister Ussif emphasised the importance of focusing on the positives to promote Ghana as a sports destination during a press briefing on March 11, 2024.
“Every international organisation (and) official that we have engaged, every one of them is applauding Ghana for a very spectacular game, so far. So, let us all embrace and come and position Ghana as the sports destination that we are all yearning to position.
"Every international organisation is applauding Ghana for successful games so far."
“That is my appeal to the media. Are there a lot of positives that we can report? Let’s focus on them and report on them so that we can position our country. Thank you,” he stressed.
The 13th African Games kicked off with a vibrant opening ceremony on March 8, 2024, held at the newly built University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
While some sports events started earlier, the main games are scheduled to run until March 23.
With over 13,000 elite athletes, sports experts, technicians, officials, and volunteers participating, the African Games promise to be a celebration of the continent’s athletic talent and diverse cultures.
Inter Miami coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has justified his choice to bench Lionel Messi in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Montreal.
Messi, aged 36, had participated in every minute of Miami’s three MLS matches in 2024, along with their Concacaf Champions League fixture against Nashville SC last Thursday.
“We talked about it about a week ago and we agreed that this was the game where he had to rest, regardless of what happened in the game with Nashville,” Martino said of Messi.
Martino had announced his plans during the preseason to rotate Messi and other senior players throughout the season. Additionally, Miami’s squad includes former Barcelona players Jordi Alba, aged 34, Sergio Busquets, aged 35, and Luis Suárez, aged 37.
“We also must make sure our team is healthy and can last an entire season,” he said.
Speaking after Sunday’s game, Inter Miami’s first defeat of the season, Martino said, “I think we more than deserved to win the game. Clearly, it was a game we should have won.”
Martino also accused Montreal players of time-wasting late in the game.
“Before the league started, we had to listen for an hour to a talk about what the spirit of the league was and the spirit of the league was not seen today,” he said.
“There was a team that did not want to play. In each situation of a throw-in, of a goal kick, or of a foul, permanently wasted time with the collaboration of a referee, who took 30 seconds to write down the shirt number of the cautioned player.”
Inter Miami have conceded five goals in their last two games and Martino admitted to being concerned by their defensive capabilities.
“What worries me is that we are a team that does not defend hard in the moments when it has to defend, be it when the ball is in play or in dead-ball situations,” Martino said.
Inter Miami are back in action on Wednesday when they take on Nashville SC in the 16th round of the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup. They drew the opening leg 2-2.
This decision follows the announcement by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the CPP in December 2023, declaring the dissolution of the entire national leadership and the establishment of an interim council to oversee the party’s affairs.
In its ruling on Monday, March 11, 2024, the court dismissed all legal challenges against Nana Frimpomaa, allowing her to continue her duties unimpeded.
In a statement released by the CPP’s Acting General Secretary, Hildegard Ferguson-Krakue, it was noted that the court deemed the actions taken by the executive council as unlawful.
“This landmark decision also prohibits any attempts to unlawfully restrain the chairperson from executing her duties, effectively upholding the integrity of our party’s leadership and governance.
“The action, which sought the removal of our esteemed Chairperson and Leader, was found by the court to be unauthorized by the CPP’s Central Committee—the operating mind of our party. Furthermore, the court recognized that the plaintiffs attempted to misuse the judicial system to perpetrate an injustice, and declared that the interim council, set up by certain individuals, is not a legitimate organ of the CPP,” part of the statement reads.
It added, “This victory is not just for the CPP but for the democratic process and the rule of law in our country. It reaffirms the principles of rightful leadership and the importance of internal party democracy and governance”.
The party also commended the lawyers who represented it, including the former leader of the #FixtheCountry movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor.
“The CPP was represented pro bono by Merton & Everett LLP, with Jamaldeeen Tonzua as counsel on record, Oliver Barker-Vormawor as Lead Counsel and 1st Chair, and Selikem Donkor as Supporting Counsel and 2nd Chair. Their professionalism, dedication, and expertise were instrumental in securing this win, and we extend our deepest gratitude to them for their exceptional service,” it added.
CPP has urged its members to come together and support the party in the wake of the court’s decision, with the aim of strengthening its position.
Additionally, the party has called on the general public to unite behind theCPP as Ghana approaches the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Member of Parliament representing Ningo-Rampram, Sam Nartey George, has demanded an apology from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his assertion that the renowned Tetteh Quarshie originates from Mampong in the Eastern Region.
During an interview on TV3 on Sunday, March 10, 2024, George stated that Akufo-Addo’s claim is a grave mistake that cannot go unnoticed.
According to the MP, the president’s statement has offended the GaDangmes by suggesting that their esteemed figure, Tetteh Quarshie, who introduced cocoa to Ghana, belongs to the Eastern Region.
George has given Akufo-Addo a deadline of seven days to apologise for what he deems an unacceptable error.
“I think the president owes the GaDangme people an apology. For the unforgivable statement he made, Tetteh Quarshie, a proud son of GaDangme land, a son whom we birth, is not ours. I mean, that’s unforgivable—completely unforgivable.
“The president owes us an apology, and it must happen within the next seven days. Absolutely, because that is an unpardonable mistake to make. He cannot seek to rewrite history and we won’t accept that. As a proud GaDangme son, I will not accept that from the president,” he said.
The MP called on Ga traditional leaders to demand President Akufo-Addo apologise for his remarks.
“And I expect the chiefs of Ga-Adangbe to rise up and right this wrong. I’ve seen that some of them have spoken, but we want to see more action. The Ga chiefs must speak. The Ga Mantse must speak. The traditional council must speak. The regional house of chiefs must speak.”
What Akufo-Addo said:
During his address at the 67th Independence Day Anniversary on March 6, 2024, President Akufo-Addo recognized the significant contribution of the region to Ghana’s cocoa industry.
He specifically acknowledged the pivotal role played by Tetteh Quarshie, who is credited with introducing cocoa to Ghana from Equatorial Guinea.
Additionally, the president stated that Tetteh Quarshie hails from the Eastern Region.
“Indeed, Tetteh Quarshie, an indigene of Mampong Akuapem, here in the Eastern Region, brought back, in the late 19th century, the cocoa pod from Fernando Po, now Bioko, in Equatorial Guinea, an act that led him and others to establish our nation’s first commercial cocoa farms here in the Eastern Region,” the president said in his speech.
Following the president’s remarks, the GaDangme Council, an organisation representing the interests of the GaDangme people, refuted his assertion regarding the origins of Tetteh Quarshie, the renowned figure in Ghana’s cocoa industry.
In a statement issued by its president, Ayikoi Otoo, the council denounced President Akufo-Addo’s claim, stating it as erroneous and misleading.
According to the council, Tetteh Quarshie was actually born and raised in Osu, a community situated in the Greater Accra Region.
The statement further provided background information on Tetteh Quarshie, highlighting his historical significance in Ghana and referencing documented records that support his connection to Osu.
General Jurisdiction, Accra High Court, has ruled against Nathaniel Dekyi, also known as Nana Nyonwah Panyin IV of Dompim Pepesa in the Western Region, and Multimedia Group Limited for defamation against the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, according to a report by DailyguideNetwork.com.
Presided over by His Lordship Richard Apietu, the court issued its ruling in February this year, awarding damages of GH¢1 million against the defendants.
The legal action was initiated by Darko-Mensah in October 2022, when he sued both defendants for defamation and sought a fine of GH¢1 million for defamatory statements made against him.
The writ of summons, filed on October 14, 2022, by Parkwood & Mossane, lawyers for the plaintiff, outlined the plaintiff’s claim against the defendants.
According to Darko-Mensah, Nana Nyonwah Panyin IV, the self-styled chief of Dompim Pepesa, made defamatory statements against him during an interview on the Joy FM Super Morning Show, owned and operated by Multimedia Group Limited.
During the interview, the chief alleged that Darko-Mensah, along with two other government officials, was involved in illegal mining or “galamsey” activities in the Dompim Pepesa area of the Western Region.
Following the interview, the second defendant published the defamatory material on its website.
The plaintiff emphasised that these allegations were false, baseless, and unwarranted, damaging his reputation significantly.
Despite requests, the defendants refused to retract and apologize for the defamatory statements, indicating their persistence in the defamation unless compelled by the court.
Darko-Mensah highlighted his enviable reputation built over the years in his private, political, and professional lives, underscoring the detrimental impact of the defendants’ actions on his image.
The ruling by the Accra High Court underscores the seriousness of defamation and its consequences, serving as a warning to individuals and media entities against making false and damaging statements against others.
Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has lodged another complaint with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) regarding the ongoing construction of the new Bank of Ghana (BoG) Complex.
In his initial complaint, Ayariga alleged corruption involving the Bank’s governor, deputy governors, the board of directors, and the project contractor, Goldkey Properties Ltd.
He also raised concerns about the significant escalation in the project’s cost from USD 121,807,517.94 to USD 222,799,760.55, despite minimal changes in the project’s scope.
In his earlier complaint, Ayariga emphasised the OSP’s mandate to investigate suspected cases of corruption and urged transparency in the use of public funds.
In a subsequent letter to the OSP dated Monday, March 11, Ayariga sought an update on the progress of the investigation.
“This is to follow up on your investigation of the complaint of suspected procurement breaches relating to the new headquarters building of the Bank of Ghana at Ridge, Accra.
“You will recall that in October 2023, I made a formal complaint to your office and requested that you investigate what I believed to be a case of corruption in the procurement of the new headquarters building of the Bank of Ghana at Ridge in Accra.
The suspects, in this case, included the governor and the deputy governors of the Bank of Ghana, namely: (1) Dr Ernest Kwamina Addison (Governor), (2) Maxwell Opoku-Afari (First Deputy Governor), and (3) Elsie Ado Awadzi (Second Deputy Governor),” an excerpt of the statement said.
Cristiano Ronaldo has addressed the incident where he was suspended for a Saudi Pro League game due to an obscene gesture, referring to it as a “misunderstanding.”
He also acknowledged his continuous efforts to improve himself, stating, “Every day I try to be a better man.”
The Al Nassr and Portugal captain received a one-match ban from the Saudi Arabia Football Federation for allegedly provoking rival fans with a gesture after his team’s 3-2 league victory over Riyadh rival Al Shabab on Feb. 25.
Ronaldo, aged 39, served the suspension by missing his team’s subsequent league match, a 4-4 draw with Al Hazm.
“I take this opportunity to talk about the case in which I was punished for a game,” Ronaldo said in a news conference.
“What I did was a misunderstanding. I will always respect the cultures of all countries, but what people see is not always reality.”
This wasn’t the first instance in which the former Real Madrid star has been riled up in Saudi Arabia after being taunted by rival fans chanting Lionel Messi’s name.
“Sometimes the passion of the game leads us to make some mistakes, but everyone makes mistakes,” Ronaldo said. “Whenever I make them, I don’t do it on purpose. Every day I try to be a better man.”
Asked if he could improve his behaviour, Ronaldo said: “I can’t promise because I’m a human being. Nobody is perfect. Life is made of mistakes.
“What I can promise is that I am a player who gives everything on the field, a player with passion, a player who always wants to win. I’m a player who doesn’t like to see people doing unsportsmanlike things … I am happy to bein Saudi Arabia and happy to represent Al Nassr.”

The approach from Chelsea reportedly occurred before Michel publicly announced his decision to remain at Girona following their victory over Rayo Vallecano on Feb. 26.
Michel has attracted attention after leading Girona to compete with top Spanish clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona for the LaLiga title this season.
In addition to Chelsea, Barcelona, who are seeking a replacement for Xavi Hernandez, have also been linked with Michel, as well as Manchester City due to the connections between the Catalan club and Pep Guardiola’s team.
According to reports from Diario AS, Girona coach Michel has received a significant offer from Chelsea to take over from Mauricio Pochettino ahead of next season.
It is said that Chelsea representatives travelled to Spain to discuss the possibility of Michel joining the club.
However, despite the interest from Chelsea, Michel’s intention is to remain at Girona for at least another season.
AS claims that Chelsea’s approach occurred before Michel publicly announced his decision to stay at Girona following their victory over Rayo Vallecano on Feb. 26.
Michel has garnered attention after leading Girona to compete with top Spanish clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona for the LaLiga title this season.
Despite the interest from Chelsea, it appears that Michel is leaning towards staying at Girona, especially if they qualify for the Champions League.
Additionally, Barcelona and Manchester City have also been linked with the Girona boss as potential replacements for Xavi Hernandez and due to connections between the clubs, respectively.
Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez expressed his admiration for Napoli’s defensive midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, stating his desire to see the Slovakian international join Barcelona.
Speaking at a press conference prior to Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League match against Napoli, Xavi responded to an Italian journalist’s question about which Napoli player he would prefer to have at Barcelona.
“If I had to say one, it would be Lobotka,” he said. “I like how he builds his game, never missing a single ball. I would like to see him at a club like Barcelona. In my opinion, he could make a difference here the same way he has for Napoli.”
Lobotka, aged 29, made the move to Napoli in 2019 from LaLiga outfit Celta Vigo for a transfer fee of €21 million ($22.9 million).
He has been a regular starter in all 28 of Napoli’s Serie A matches this season, as well as featuring in their seven UEFA Champions League games.
Additionally, Lobotka played in every match during Napoli’s successful 2022-23 league campaign and started in all 10 of their Champions League fixtures.
Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has taken action against 62 players ahead of its upcoming domestic season playoffs, banning them due to allegations of age cheating.
Among those barred from participation is Wilfred Nathan Douala, who gained attention as the youngest participant in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Doubts surrounding his age, listed as 17 years old, led to suspicions of age falsification, prompting scrutiny from social media users who noted that he appeared older than his documented age.
🚨 OFFICIAL: The Cameroonian Federation has suspended 62 players for age fraud, including Wilfried Nathan Douala, Victoria United midfielder who was selected at the last AFCON and claims to be 17-years old! 😱
Reports from BSN Sport confirm that Douala, the youngest participant at the AFCON, has been excluded from Cameroon’s top-tier league this season, joining 62 other players. They were barred due to concerns about “irregularities in identification and ages.”
This incident mirrors previous events in Cameroon.
In January 2023, FECAFOOT suspended 21 players out of 30 selected for the U17 AFCON due to suspected age falsification.
This decision came after MRI tests were conducted to accurately assess bone development and verify players’ ages.
FECAFOOT attributed these measures to President Samuel Eto’o’s directives, expressing worries about the reputational damage caused by age fraud in football.
This was reported by SoFoot.
“This action stems from strict instructions provided by the president of FECAFOOT, acting under the mandate from COMEX, to eradicate the manipulation of civil status that has previously tarnished the reputation of the umbrella body of Cameroonian football.”
Although Douala was chosen for the Cameroon squad at the recent AFCON, he did not play in any matches during the tournament.
