In recent weeks, athletes participating in the continent’s premier sports event have received medals that can only be described as unique.
As its well known, in major sporting events like theOlympics or the World Cup, medals typically feature a circular design with engraved inscriptions or logos relevant to the competition.
As with all medals, the logo of the 13th African Games, Accra 2023, is on one side and the other side with âExperience the African Dream.â
It has been revealed that the emblem embossed on the medals is an Adinkra symbol known as âFihankraâ.
Fihankra holds significance in the Akan culture and represents an enclosed and secure compound house, particularly in the Ghanaian context.
This symbolises a place where movement is controlled, with only one entrance and exit, ensuring that the activities within the compound are visible to all. It also signifies unity within the family.
As the 2023 All African Games concluded, hundreds of athletes returned to their respective countries carrying a piece of Ghanaian tradition as they excelled in their respective disciplines.
The Games commenced on March 8 and officially concluded on March 23, 2024.
Newcastle United is eyeing Benfica’s sports director, Rui Pedro Braz, as a potential successor for Dan Ashworth, according to reports from The Times.
Manchester United has reportedly made a formal offer for Ashworth as part of their ongoing restructuring led by new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave by Newcastle after expressing his desire to join Old Trafford.
Reports suggest that Ashworth’s gardening leave could last up to 20 months, although Newcastle may consider shortening it for an additional fee, estimated to be between ÂŁ15m and ÂŁ20m.
Meanwhile, Braz has gained attention for his successful tenure at Benfica, where he led the club to win the Portuguese title in his first full season in charge.
Notably, Braz orchestrated significant transfer deals, including Enzo FernĂĄndez’s move to Chelsea for âŹ121million and Darwin Núùez’s transfer to Liverpool for âŹ100million.
Other candidates being considered to replace Ashworth include formerTottenham, Monaco, and RB Leipzig sporting director Paul Mitchell, West Ham technical director Tim Steidten, and Tiago Pinto, who recently left his position at Roma.
Florian Wirtz netted Germany’s quickest-ever international goal just seven seconds into the match, setting the stage for their morale-boosting 2-0 victory over France in a friendly on Saturday.
This win marks Germany’s first victory in their last four matches, providing a timely confidence boost ahead of Euro 2024, which they will host in June.
The goal came as a surprise to the French side, with Wirtz striking from long range to notch his first international goal.
The well-executed move originated from Toni Kroos, who made a comeback from a three-year absence from international duty.
Wirtz’s goal broke the previous record set by Lukas Podolski, whose seventh-second strike against Ecuador in 2013 had held the title for the fastest goal scored by a German player in international competition.
The hosts gradually took control and Kylian MbappĂŠ forced a fine save from Germany’s Marc-AndrĂŠ ter Stegen to protect their lead in the 26th minute.

“We had a very good start and the kickoff was planned exactly that way,” Germany’s Nagelsmann said.
“It was important to protect the lead and after the break we improved further and carved out more chances. I am very satisfied with the way we fought. It is what we wish, to give it all every time.
“We got a confidence boost from this game. We are on a good path and played a very good game today.”
Despite France’s efforts to equalize, it was Germany who extended their lead further. The German team, seeking to improve upon their recent record of just two wins in their last 10 matches, found success early in the second half.
Florian Wirtz delivered a precise cross to Jamal Musiala, who then set up Kai Havertz to score the second goal for Germany. As the match progressed, France struggled to generate scoring opportunities, and their attempts were thwarted by the German defense.
Late in the game, substitute Olivier Giroud missed two chances for France, while Germany’s Antonio Ruediger inadvertently hit the post while attempting to clear the ball, adding to the drama of the match.
“We weren’t there, that’s obvious,” said France coach Didier Deschamps after his 150th game in charge. “The Germans played a high level match today. When we see our start to the match, with this goal, we are standing still.
“The Germans did things better than us. In terms of commitment and aggression, we were below. The first person to blame is me,” he added.
Germany play the Netherlands on Tuesday when France face Chile.
According to reports from Marca, Paris Saint-Germain had made a substantial bid for the 16-year-old, which was nearing the world-record fee of âŹ222 million they paid for Neymar in 2017.
“We have received offers for players like Lamine Yamal, for âŹ200m, and we have said no,” Laporta said. “Because we trust the boy, because he is the future of the team.
“Because we trust in the boy, in his sporting potential, and we don’t have the need, on the contrary. We are in a process of economic recovery and we are already seeing the end of the tunnel.”
Manchester City has entered the competition to secure the signature of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a stellar season with the Toffees, attracting interest from various clubs across Europe, including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Real Madrid.
Despite already possessing a wealth of top central defenders, City sees Branthwaite as a promising talent akin to John Stones.
Like Stones, Branthwaite is a homegrown player known for his ball-playing abilities and comfort in playing out from the back with both feet. Stones himself made a similar move from Everton to City for ÂŁ47.5 million in 2016.
Branthwaite’s potential transfer is estimated to be valued around ÂŁ60 million. He recently earned his first call-up to the England senior squad for the current international window and is expected to feature in the match against Belgium on Tuesday night.
Having already established himself as a key member of the England Under-21s, a standout performance for Gareth Southgate’s side could further enhance Branthwaite’s burgeoning reputation as a talented young center-back.
Manchester United is preparing to offer midfielder Scott McTominay a new contract, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe impressed by his recent performances.
According to the Daily Star, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have been impressed by McTominay’s contributions and see him as a key player for the future.
They are willing to offer him a new deal and a pay rise.
This season, McTominay has scored seven league goals in 25 games.
While United has the option to extend McTominay’s current ÂŁ60,000-per-week contract by another year, reports suggest that he could expect a significant salary increase and an extended stay at the club.
Despite interest from West Ham and Newcastle, United is eager to secure his services.
As a lifelong United fan, McTominay has made 243 appearances for the club, scoring 28 goals and providing eight assists. He has also earned 41 caps for Scotland.
McTominay could feature in their upcoming match against Brentford when the Premier League resumes on Saturday. Currently, United sits sixth in the table.
Communications Director of the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, has tweeted an old photo of the NDC flagbearer and former president of Ghana, John Mahama, alongside LGBTQ activist and human rights advocate Andrew Solomon.
The caption of the tweet implied that Mahama supports the LGBTQ community but is being hypocritical about his stance because his party is advocating for the passage ofthe anti-gay bill.
The NPP government, according to Ahiagba, has made a clear position on the anti-gay bill; however, the former president has refused to answer questions on what relationship he has Mr Andrew Solomon.
“NPP and Akufo-Addo have made their positions on same-sex and related activities in Ghana clear.
However, some people who support the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill are using this support as a means to deflect questions about their association with the known LGBT activist, Mr. Andrew Solomon, ” he tweeted.
He went ahead to laud Akufo-Addo’s government for its “diligence” in handling the controversies surrounding the bill and assenting to it.
“Akufo-Addo’s diligence is commendable, given the potential social impact of the bill. What is going on here?” he added.

Meanwhile, former President John Dramani Mahama has taken a firm stance against the promotion of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, aligning himself with his Christian faith as a member of the Assemblies of God Church.
He has made it clear that he does not support gay marriage or transgender rights, citing conflicts with both his personal beliefs and the teachings of his faith.
In regards to President Akufo-Addo’s handling of the anti-gay bill, Mahama has criticized the President’s Secretary for a letter sent to Parliament, which he deemed disrespectful. The letter requested Parliament to withhold sending the anti-LGBTQ+ bill to President Akufo-Addo for assent due to pending applications for an interlocutory injunction before the Supreme Court.
Mahama found the tone and content of the letter offensive and disrespectful to the democratic process, arguing that it undermines the foundations of Parliamentary democracy and neglects the role of the Clerk of Parliament.
Mahama also suggests that President Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill stems from concerns about losing foreign aid.
The Ministry of Finance has indicated that Ghana could face significant losses in World Bank financing if the bill becomes law, which Mahama sees as a factor influencing the President’s stance on the matter.
An X (formerly Twitter), KOJO DYNAMIC @AnnanPerry, believed to be a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the Attorney General of Ghana, describing him as a lawyer of the incumbent government, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and not a servant of the country as his role demands of him.
Godfred Dame doesn't see himself as an Attorney General of Ghana but Npp lawyer. All his advice is political and senseless.
“Godfred Dame doesn’t see himself as an Attorney General of Ghana but as a NPP lawyer. All his advice is political and senseless”.
His comments come after Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame recommended to President Akufo-Addo that Parliament hold off on sending the anti-LGBTQ+ bill for assent.
This suggestion was conveyed in a letter signed by Nana Bediatuo Asante, the President’s Secretary, on March 18.
The Attorney General cited two pending Supreme Court applications for interlocutory injunctions as the basis for this advice.
This move garnered several reactions, with many blasting the president for disrespecting the spirit of the law and undermining democracy.
Nana Kwame Bediako, popularlyknown as Cheddar and the leader of The New Force Movement, has kicked off a nationwide tour dubbed the “listening tour” as he gears up to contest Ghana’s presidency in the upcoming December national election.
Over the course of five days, he focused on the Ashanti Region, where he interacted with numerous media platforms.
In one of such engagements with Pure FM, the host asked, “What exactly do you do for a living?” Cheddar responded confidently; “I am a developer, I am an industrialist, I am a visionary, I am a philanthropist, I am a humanitarian, and I am an entrepreneur.
Go and bring someone who has all these credentials and credibility; I have it all. I have learned and seen it all. I want to share because the value of knowledge is to be shared.”
During a separate interview in the same area during his tour, Nana Kwame Bediako made a bold commitment to connect the sea from Ghana’s coastline to the landlocked Ashanti Region.
He criticised the inefficiency of using roads to transport containers when utilising the sea could offer a quicker and more effective option.
He highlighted the shortcomings of the existing system, where goods transported by road frequently arrive damaged or spoiled after the six-hour trip from Tema Harbour to Kumasi.
“I want to open up the East and Western Corridor infrastructure. I want to build power stations, and energy stations, connect the gas, create industries, and bring technology.”
Senior member ofNational Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Minister of Interior (2013-2014), Kwesi Ahwoi, aged 77, has drawn criticism from within the NDC, particularly the pro-Mahama faction, for his remarks implying that the late President John Evans Atta Mills’ fate could potentially repeat itself with John Dramani Mahama if the NDC wins the presidential election in December 2024.
What was intended to be a happy event at the Ahwoisâ office on Church Street, Labone, to celebrate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemanâs renomination as John Mahamaâs running mate left many guests aghast, with some reportedly leaving the scene prematurely?
In proposing a toast to Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, 72, Kwesi Ahwoi stated confidently that she would be the first woman Vice President of Ghana. A harmless message, it seemed.
However, he proceeded to show how he went further to urge her to hold herself in readiness to be president since âanything can happen,â as it indeed happened when John Mahama took over with the passing of Professor Evan Atta-Mills, which allowed Vice President John Mahama to be sworn in to finish the unexpired term in 2012.
âJohn Mahama was not ready to be president at the time but nature schemed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama. Anything can happen, so Naana, be ever prepared; as your motto says, anything can happen and you can become the President of the Republic of Ghana,â Kwesi Ahwoi said, in a video that has since gone viral.
During Mr Ahwoiâs comments, a female voice could be heard in the background saying, âNo, no, donât pray for death!â in reaction to what was being said.
Ahwoi’s recent remarks have stirred speculation on social media regarding the health of former President John Mahama, who is set to contest the presidency for the fourth time in December.
Former President John Atta Mills, who battled throat cancer, passed away on 24 July 2012, at the age of 68, after serving as president since 2009. His vice president assumed office and successfully contested the December 2012 general elections.
Historical records show that the influential Ahwoi brothers (Ato, Kwamena, and Kwesi) played a pivotal role in persuading President Jerry John Rawlings to select Prof Mills as his running mate in 1996. Ato Ahwoi’s office on Church Street, Labone, was regarded as a center of influence during the Mills administration.
Naana Poku-Agyemang, whose candidacy was backed by the Ahwois, is seen as a continuation and expansion of that influential legacy.
If Mr. John Mahama wins in 2024, he can only serve a single four-year term, setting the stage for a potentially intense battle for his successor within the NDC.
Interestingly, the Pro-Jane faction, led by the influential Ahwoi brothers, promoted Naana Poku-Agyemang’s candidacy, citing her age and perceived lack of ambition as factors making her the safest choice for the NDC’s running mate in 2024.
Afropop artistand songwriter Wiyaala has emphasised her commitment to maintaining the integrity of her brand as a female artist. Last December, Wiyaala expressed concern over her placement on a promotional flyer for Saminifest.
The concert, organised by Samini, was set to take place on January 1, 2024, at the Royal Cosy Hills Hotel (Jirapa, Dubai).
In the flyer, Wiyaala found herself positioned at the bottom, behind artists like Kuami Eugene and Fancy Gadam, while Samini was prominently featured at the top.
Shortly after the flyer was shared on Facebook, Wiyaala insisted that her placement be changed or she would withdraw from the concert.
During her discussion with AJ Sarpong on 3FM Lounge, the singer of “Africa” expressed her dissatisfaction with her placement on the promotional flyer.
She emphasized that it was inappropriate for her to be positioned in such a manner, as it created a misleading perception that she was a lesser-known or emerging artist.
Wiyaala shut down the #AllAfricanGames2023 closing ceremony with a top performance.
This discrepancy prompted her to request a change to the flyer.
âI know what I can do and if anybody pretends not to give me my flowers, I will take it by force now. I am not going to allow that. You want something and we agreed on something, place me in the position that I truly deserve. I am not going to be treated like some [upcoming artiste].
âIf you place me behind like that, we all know what it means. I am not some upcoming artiste. I am going to bebehind Samini any day but for my two brothers, they have to let me introduce them,â she said on Friday, March 22.
Shatta Wale himself announced the decision on Facebook on March 22, citing financial disagreements with other collaborators on the album.
This announcement stirred up discussions among Wale’s fans, especially since the album featured collaborations with artists like Tekno and Bounty Killer. To address the situation, Sammy Flex took to Shatta Wale’s YouTube channel on March 23 to provide clarification.
Sammy Flex explained that the album was removed due to Shatta Wale’s dissatisfaction with the collaboration dynamics, particularly concerning financial matters.
He emphasised that, despite Shatta Wale’s status as an independent musician who invests significantly in his projects, he expects the same level of commitment from his collaborators.
The removal from YouTube is seen as a step towards resolving these issues, following fruitful discussions between both parties. Flex assured that the team will explore alternative options to address the matter and restore normalcy.
âAs an artiste, at every point in time, he has the way he wants his things to go. At every point in time, if these things change, definitely the artiste will not be happy. The artiste will not be happy.
âKnowing the investment that he has also put in, he would want the other partners to also come in with the same energy. He would want the other partners to also come in with the same force. So that when our powers all come together, it will combine to give us the necessary results that we are looking for.
âBut as an independent artiste, as someone who is funding all his projects, he wasnât seeing that. And Iâm sure, like I said, there is a process for achieving some of these objectives. And to him, he thinks this is one of the first processes to handle that. âSo to avoid any back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, let me first put the one on YouTube down. When I put the one on YouTube down and we can have some conversations and it works, Iâm sure we can get back to normal,â he explained.
Even though the ‘Konekt’ album has been removed from YouTube, Sammy Flex encouraged fans to continue listening to it on other digital streaming platforms such as Spotify, Boomplay, Audiomack, and Apple Music.
He assured fans that the team is actively working on finding solutions behind the scenes, emphasizing that this action does not signify the end of the artist’s opportunities.
âThere are still some options that we can explore, and that is what the team will try to do behind the scenes before we move forward. But like Iâm saying, it does not take away the songs from online markets. It takes the song from only the YouTube app, on Shatta Waleâs page.
âAs much as I know, the rest of the marketing, the digital platforms also have their songs there. All the rest of their DSPs, also have their songs there. So beyond having it on YouTube, you can also access their songs on the rest of the platforms,â he said.
He reportedly died in the early hours of March 24, 2024, at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga.
John Tia, who recently participated in the confirmation of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as the running mate for the 2024 election, served as the Member of Parliament for Talensi from January 7, 1993, until his defeat in the 2012 general election.
Additionally, he held the position of Minister for Information in Ghana.
Survived by four children, Tia had announced his intention to pursue full-time farming after his ambassadorial role in Cuba, aiming to contribute to the country’s food security efforts.
Former Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Joseph Dindiok Kpemka, has called for commendation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and its Managing Director, Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama, for their diligent efforts in maintaining favourable power supply to the public amid alleged reports of their huge loss .
His comments come on the heels of recent debates over financial management by the power supply company after news of the company’s incurred loss of 19 billion US dollars.
In a discussion with JoyNews Newsfile host on a segment of the show, the former Attorney-General condemned the negative news reports about the ECG’s defects while commending the company’s managing director for what he describes as his bravery and courage.
The ECG embarked on a revenue mobilisation exercise that saw several private and government agencies, such as Parliament House, which owed the company, taken off the national grid.
“I am very worried that the youngman is doing some very wonderful things there , ECG and yet we aren’t talking about those positive strides that he is making, but yet singling out out what we call defects and taking him on, etc.
Look at the recent things he did. going to Parliament and others, very courageous to let the money come out so that we’d be able to keep our commitments to see the power on. All those things we aren’t commenting on, his level of courage.
Commending this move, he recommended that ECG begiven an opportunity to explain and ‘defend’ the reports flying around before a verdict is given. ECG should be given an opportunity to vindicate itself, he added.
“ECG has been collected without being given any hearing at all.We haven’t listened to them to hear their side of the story and all the reports we get we use as a basis to hang them.
Know that these reports are interim reports and ECG will provide answers and so it will be the case that at the end those faults that are alleged to have been found will be perfectly answered.
Let’s give them the opportunity to explain themselves and I think ECG is doing a wonderful job. Samuel is doing a good job, trying to ensue that our lights are on in the midst of difficulty we should criticise them yeah they aren’t beyond criticism but at the same time we should acknowledge them” , he noted.
"The young man [ECG Boss] is doing some wonderful things there with ECG and yet we are not talking about those positive strives he is making"
Former Real Madrid and Chelsea midfielder, Geremi, has initiated divorce proceedings after discovering he is not the biological father of his children.
The decision came after a DNA test revealed that his wife’s ex-husband is the biological father of the twin children, whom Geremi had believed to be his own.
According to court documents obtained by The Sun, the revelation shattered the couple’s relationship, causing Geremi significant emotional distress.
Despite having no biological children together, the discovery of the children’s true paternity led to irreparable damage to their marital harmony.
Geremi, who enjoyed successful spells in La Liga and the Premier League, represented Real Madrid and Chelsea before retiring from professional football.

Asantehene and chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has bemoaned what he says is âunfavourableâ staff-to-student ratio at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
He says the current staff strength of 1,190 faculty to 85,000 students is woefully inadequate and takes a toll on effective teaching and learning.
Speaking at the 57th special congregation of the university, Otumfuo asked the government for clearance to recruit more staff.
âUnfavourable unfavourable staff-to-student ratio has been a challenge to the university’s aspiration to run to its full extent. With the implementation of the strategic objectives of the university, leading among others to the establishment of the Obuasi campus, the operation of distance learning programmes across the country and the mentoring of over 70 nursing and midwifery institutions, the current staff strength of 1,190 faculty with a correspondent student population of over 85,000 is woefully inadequate to effectively support the academic activities of the university.
âIâm informed that the government has approved some quotas for some universities. It is my ardent wish that, KNUST will be placed in a special category and prioritised considering the pivotal role the university plays in the developmental agenda of the nation,â he said.
Following up on the recommendations of Mr. Joe Anokye, the CEO of the National Communication Authority at the R. P. Baffuor Memorial Lecture 2023, to establish a data centre, Otumfuo reminded the vice chancellor to see to its realisation.
Otumfuo also charged the citizenry and the Electoral Commission to safeguard the countryâs democratic ideals.
âThe Electoral Commission must also ensure fairness and be seen to be an impartial arbiter in the electoral process. Our collective aspiration must be to foster an environment of mutual respect and constructive dialogue,â he said.
The vice-chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.)Rita Akosua Dickson, touted the success of the Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL) project and appealed to benevolent organisations and individuals to continuously support the project.

About the City Hall attacks
Al Jazeera News reports that in a heinous attack claimed by the ISIL (ISIS) group, gunmen dressed in war fatigues opened fire and detonated bombs at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall, killing at least 115 people and injured 187 more.
As the crowd gathered to watch the seasoned rock band Picnic on Friday night in the western outskirts of the Russian capital, at least five attackers wearing camouflage and armedwith automatic weapons broke into the crowded performance hall, shooting into the crowd and detonating explosives that caused a large fire.
Russia’s Investigative Committee reported on Saturday that the death toll from the attack had reached at least 115 people, with expectations of further fatalities.
Earlier, health officials stated that 60 of the injured individuals were in critical condition.
ISIL, a militant group previously active in Iraq and Syria, asserted responsibility for the attack via its Telegram channel, alleging that the gunmen responsible had fled the scene.
However, Al Jazeera noted the inability to independently verify this claim.
Reports from Offinso in the Ashanti Region indicate that the deposed queen mother is displaying behaviors that suggest she is contesting her removal from office.
Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, despite being officially destooled in January 2024 by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reportedly appointed a new paramount chief for the area.
This action contradicts the current situation where a new chief has already been appointed and sworn in before the Asantehene.
The former queen mother had been engaged in a dispute with the Otumfuo over the selection of a new Offinsomanhene throughout 2023.
She persisted in presenting Dr. KK Sarpong, the former boss of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), despite his rejection by the Otumfuo on three occasions due to his non-royal status in the area.
Following reports of her appointment of Dr. KK Sarpong, a video has surfaced on social media, particularly on Facebook, showing the former GNPC boss receiving homage from individuals believed to be his supporters.
In the video, a group of women can be seen singing praises and paying respects to Dr. KK Sarpong, who is seated on a large chair with his feet propped up on a stool.
Some of the women can be heard expressing their support for Dr. KK Sarpong as the rightful chief, referring to any other claimant as illegitimate.
This event reportedly took place during the current week.
Additionally, GhanaWeb has obtained a letter on the queen mother’s letterhead introducing Dr. KK Sarpong as the paramount chief to the Offinso Municipal Assembly, as well as a letter from the Assembly warning against any procession by the opposing faction.
Earlier in the week, a crowd marched to the former queen mother’s residence chanting for a new chief for the Offinso traditional area. Many of these disgruntled residents advocated for Dr. KK Sarpong to be appointed as chief, as he was initially endorsed by the kingmakers.
Most of these residents, who wore funeral clothes to portray their seriousness and sadness over the claim of ‘no chief in the town’, chanted, “We want our new chief, K.K. Sarpong”.
Background:
Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong was initially elected by the Ofinso queen mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, and the other kingmakers to succeed the late Nana Wiafe Akenteng, but he was disqualified by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for not being a royal.
A new chief, Nana Amoako Poku, has since been enstooled by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This occurred after the Kwakwaboa Abusuapanin, Opanin Yaw Nkrumah Adusah, assumed the queen’s mother’s responsibility in her absence and presented the new candidate.
During the installation of the new chief, there were rumours that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had destooled the queen mother of Offinso for failing to honour his invitations.

President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction with the successful conclusion of the 2023 All African Games, stating that those who advocated for the event’s postponement have been proven wrong.
In his congratulatory message to Ghanaians after the games, President Akufo-Addo thanked the nation for its steadfast support and confidence in the government’s ability to host the historic event.
He specifically applauded Ghanaians for disregarding calls from former President John Dramani Mahama, who, as the flagbearer of the NDC, had urged for the cancellation of the games a few months earlier.
âTo the people of Ghana, I thank you for believing in the ability of the Government to host the games, the first in our history. I am also grateful that you did not listen to the naysayers who doubted our nationâs resolve, and urged us to cancel the games,â parts of his statement read.
Former President John Dramani Mahama had previously urged the government to reconsider hosting the 2023 All African Games, citing concerns about the country’s economic challenges at the time.
In contrast, President Akufo-Addo has extended his warm congratulations to Ghanaian athletes who participated in the 13th African Games held in Accra.
The Ghanaian contingent achieved a remarkable feat, securing a total of sixty-eight medals, including nineteen gold, twenty-nine silver, and twenty bronze medals. This achievement is considered a significant milestone for the nation.
In a statement released on Saturday, March 23, 2024, following the conclusion of the event, the President praised the team’s outstanding performance, emphasizing that their success not only brought honor to Ghana but also served as inspiration for aspiring athletes.
âTo each and every member of the Ghanaian team, I commend you for your dedication, perseverance and unwavering commitment to excellence. Your excellent achievements have not only brought glory to our nation but have also inspired a new generation of sportspersons across our beloved country. You have showcased the best of Ghana to the world.â
With six years remaining, ForAfrika, the largest African humanitarian development organisation, is striving to extend water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to as many people as possible in the countries where it operates: Angola, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, South Sudan, and Uganda.
The SDGs, comprising 17 global objectives set by the United Nations, aim to tackle social, economic, and environmental challenges and foster sustainable development worldwide by 2030.
âEverywhere we work, we collaborate with other development organisations so that resources are effectively allocated, and there is no doubling up. Most important of all, however, is that we work with communities to ensure that the services we help them to provide tie in with their goals and aspirations,â Wentzel says ahead of World Water Day on 22 March.
In 2023, ForAfrika reached 463 191 people with WASH services, installing 140 wells, 448 handwashing stations and 2 392 toilets. In its 40 years of existence, it has sunk an estimated 4 250 wells, Wentzel says.
The United Nations has warned that by 2030, water scarcity could displace up to 700-million people in Africa, emphasising the urgent need for effective solutions to address this crisis. Experts predict that as early as 2025, 460-million people in Africa will live in water-stressed areas and that nearly 50% of Africaâs projected population of 1.45-billion people will face water stress or scarcity.
ForAfrika has learnt many lessons in its years of providing WASH access to communities, including in the aftermath of natural disasters such as cyclones and amid the fallout from conflict, Wentzel says.
One of the most important lessons learnt is that it is crucial that organisations work with communities to establish what their needs and long-term plans are so that any services or resources provided slot in with that bigger picture.
âForAfrika has found that helping a community establish a water committee to oversee access and ensure maintenance of any installed resources and equipment is crucial. Community ownership is very important if a project or installation is to have longevity,â Wentzel says.
It is also important to have qualified technical staff overseeing water access operations, and it is critical that development organisations collaborate so that their actions are well coordinated and resources and services are not oversupplied, or overlooked.
Climate experts predict that Africa, already a water-scarce continent, will experience more significant water shortages in the years to come.
Already Horn of Africa countries like Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are facing a sixth consecutive failed rainy season. This has led to severe hunger, with the World Food Programme reporting that 13-million people across these countries and the autonomous region of Somaliland are affected.
âAfrica is our home. We want to see that everyone in Africa has access to WASH services, and enjoys food security, which is, in part, dependent on water being available for irrigation. We need to keep working at this enormous challenge,â says Wentzel.
Women around the world are increasingly taking on significant roles across various fields, including the daughter of Ghana’s first female chief of staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, aiming to leave their mark not just within their organisations but also in history.
In Ghana, women have steadily emerged as crucial figures contributing to the growth, development, and sustainability of both large and small institutions spanning banking, technology, agriculture, finance, politics, and law.
Adding to this trend is Maataa Opare.
Further investigation reveals that Maataa Opare currently serves as the Group Head of Legal and Company Secretary at Fidelity Bank Limited in Accra.
According to the bank’s official website, Maataa boasts over sixteen years of experience as an in-house lawyer in financial institutions, with additional experience in property litigation and product liability gained from Hogan Lovells in the UK.
She is also a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales and has been admitted to the Bar in Ghana, indicating her dual jurisdiction qualification.
Having relocated to Ghana in 2012, Maataa has played pivotal roles at Fidelity Bank Limited, including facilitating the acquisition of ProCredit Savings and Loans and its subsequent integration.
She was sworn in as a member of the governing board of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in July 2021. Additionally, she serves as the Patron of the ECG Power Queens and as a Trustee of the Head of State Awards Ghana under the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
In addition to her professional achievements, Maataa Opare holds a Masters in Professional Cake Design, showcasing her diverse talents.Notably, she is recognized for creating various masterpieces, including the elaborate 30-piece cake installation for ICGC’s 30th-anniversary celebrations.
Tema Circuit Court âBâ has sentenced Abdulai Sanusi, a 27-year-old scrap dealer and herbal medicine peddler from Niger, to three years of hard labor imprisonment for stabbing security guard Vincent Akpotaka with scissors.
The court, presided over by Klorkor Okai-Mills, handed down the sentence after Sanusi pleaded guilty to causing harm to Akpotaka’s left rib and back.
According to Inspector Jacob Kuubal, the prosecutor presenting the case, Akpotaka, a security guard at Sentuo Oil Refinery in the Tema Industrial Area, had bought some of Sanusi’s medicine valued at Ghâľ 50.00 on credit in January 2024, with the promise of payment later.
On February 12, 2024, around 18:30 hours, Sanusi visited Akpotaka at his residence on the refinery premises to demand payment.
However, Akpotaka explained that he couldn’t pay immediately as his money was stored in his mobile money wallet and the nearby agents had already closed for the day.
As a result, a confrontation ensued between the two, escalating into a physical altercation.
During the scuffle, Sanusi drew out a concealed pair of scissors and stabbed Akpotaka multiple times under his left rib and on his back, causing severe lacerations.
Upon witnessing the victim’s profuse bleeding from the deep wounds, Sanusi fled the scene.
However, he was pursued and apprehended by witnesses, leading to his arrest and subsequent handover to the Lube Oil Police Station, where he received a caution.
Akpotaka was issued a police medical report advising him to seek treatment at a government hospital.
Subsequently, on February 18, 2024, he underwent surgery at Tema General Hospital for his injuries, which included visible omentum tissue and perforated stomach lining, as confirmed by Dr. Iddi Sumaili during a medical examination on February 14, 2024.
The surgery revealed internal bleeding between the abdominal and pelvic cavities, indicating the severity of Akpotaka’s injuries.
Due to his inability to cover the medical expenses, he was detained at the hospital’s social welfare department until kind-hearted individuals contributed to settle his bills, enabling his discharge from the hospital.
Prominent member of theNew Patriotic Party (NPP) and the current Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, recently disclosed his membership in the Freemason Society.
He shared insights into his journey into society and outlined some of the qualifications for membership.
According to him, Freemasonry focuses on fostering connections and camaraderie among its members.
He expressed his admiration for society, highlighting the sense of enjoyment they derive from each other’s company.
Mr. Jumah emphasised that the primary requirement for joining is to possess good character.
âIâve been a Freemason for some time now, and while I may still have dues to settle, I hold them in high regard. Theyâre a group that knows how to enjoy themselves.
âWe primarily engage in Bible readings; thatâs the extent of our activities. Iâve never witnessed any other rituals beyond that. Freemasonry strictly admits men of good character. I was recommended by someone who saw those qualities in me.
âThe society isnât exclusively for the elite; rather, itâs open to anyone of upright character. The key is to steer clear of criminal activities, such as murder or theft,â he said in an interview on Adubia TV on Youtube.
Deputy Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Maleek Basintale, has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo following a ‘degrading’ tweet by the Director of Communications, New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah.
The Communications Director of the NPP tweeted an old photo of the NDC flagbearer and former president of Ghana, John Mahama, alongside LGBTQ activist and human rights advocate Andrew Solomon.
The caption implied that Mahama supports the LGBTQ community but is being hypocritical about his stance because his party is advocating for the passage of the anti-gay bill.
Cheap! I thought you were better than this. It appears you keep declining and declining. A whole Comms director posting ignorance.
Well, Akuffo-Addo watched his brother Paul Danquah wear pampers before dying. He should use as guide and stop meddling with Lesbians like Serwa B. https://t.co/eWHPI2sOd5
In a reactionary tweet to this, Maleek made reference to the sibling of Akufo-Addo, Paul Danquah who was openly gay. He lived with his life partner, Peter Pollock, in the United Kingdom, and later died in Tangier, Morocco, on August 13, 2015.
He alleged that the President’s brother wore diapers days before his demise.
In light of this, he urged Akufo-Addo to learn from the ‘predicament’ of his late brother and be circumspect in his dealings as far as the anti-gay bill is concerned.
“Well, Akuffo-Addo watched his brother Paul Danquah wear pampers before dying. He should use this as a guide and stop meddling with Lesbians like Serwa B,”he said in a tweet.
On February 27, 2024, President Nana Akufo-Addo delivered his second-to-last State of the Nation address, offering an overview of his government’s performance over the past seven years.
The address was rich in statistics and strongly emphasised themes aimed at securing re-election for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The president provided updates on several key flagship projects, such as Free Senior High School education, One District One Factory, and Planting for Food and Jobs.
President Akufo-Addo also claimed credit for the increase in the number of informal sector workers enrolled in the country’s tier-one pension scheme, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions. Fact-Check Ghana has investigated the accuracy of this assertion and provided the following findings:
Claim: âIn May last year, SSNIT launched the Self-Employed Enrolment Drive (SEED), an initiative which seeks to improve coverage and increase the contributor base of the SSNIT Scheme.
“Since the launch of the SEED initiative, some six hundred thousand (600,000) self-employed persons have been enrolled onto the programme, and now have some form of social security cover.â
Verdict: Completely False
Explanation: The SEED programme was launched in May 2023 to fulfil SSNITâS mandate to extend pension coverage to all workers, including the self-employed.
During the launch of the initiative in Kumasi, SSNIT’s Director-General, Dr. John Tenkorang, highlighted that out of the 1.9 million active SSNIT contributors, only 32,000, representing approximately two percent, were self-employed. This suggests that many self-employed individuals may need state assistance or rely on family and friends for financial support during retirement.
To verify the President’s claim that 600,000 people had registered for the SEED project due to the initiative, Fact-Check Ghana reached out to SSNIT through the right to information (RTI), seeking information on the number of self-employed individuals registered for SSNIT from 2016 to 2023.
Through this process, Fact-Check Ghana discovered that in 2023, less than 59,000 individuals would be registered under the SEED initiative. This initiative aims to encourage informal sector workers to become contributors to the tier-one pension scheme.
In a media interview last November, the SSNIT Director-General mentioned that the number of self-employed individuals registered with the fund had increased from around 14,200 in May 2023 to over 57,000 by October 2023.
This aligns with the figures SSNIT provided to Fact-Check Ghana for 2023.
However, this contradicts the President’s statement of 600,000 registrations in his State of the Nation address.
When considering registrations from 2017 to 2023, the total number of self-employed individuals registered for SSNIT contributions is 187,468, still falling short of the President’s claim for 2023 alone.
Additionally, data from theNational Pension Regulatory Authority (NPRA) indicates that as of 2021, only about 600,000 out of an estimated 10.2 million informal sector workers are enrolled in at least one pension scheme.
Therefore, President Akufo-Addo’s assertion that 600,000 self-employed individuals registered for SSNIT contributions in 2023 alone is entirely false.
Former TV host of Net 2 TV’s show known for exposing ‘fake’ pastors, Kwaku Annan, has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo over an alleged claim of consistent changing of the cooks and chefs of the president over alleged claims of poisoning following reports of John Kumah’s death being blamed on poisoning.
Speaking on his new political programme called ‘The Frontline’ on CTV on March 22, 2024, which is part of CMG, he quizzed why the president’s outfit keeps changing their kitchen staff.
He asked, “How many times, I will like to ask how many times they have changed the cooks of the president? And why would they change them? Is it because they no longer look appealing, or is there something else? I ain’t talking about a minister; oh, I’m talking about the president himself”
The outspoken host, also, continued by slamming members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their wickedness and desire to kill their own members over political power and dominance. According to him, the death of the late Finance Minister and MP for Ejisu’s death was caused by member(s) of his own party, NPP.
“John Kumah’s job is an inside job, You people are very wicked people” he fumed.

In a video statement shared on social media, Kate, as she is commonly known, expressed her diagnosis as a significant surprise.
This announcement follows her temporary withdrawal from public engagements two months ago, when Kensington Palace announced her undergoing surgery for a non-cancerous abdominal condition.
âIn January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,â said Catherine, 42, who is married to the heir to the British throne, Prince William.
âThe surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.â
Catherine, Princess of Wales, during a portage session for her ‘Shaping Us’ campaign on early childhood, taken on September 27, 2023, in Sittingbourne, England.
Kate continued that âWilliam and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.â

The princess added, âAs you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.â
Kate said that she had told them she is âwell and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.â
She expressed gratitude to Prince William for his unwavering support, describing him as a constant source of comfort and reassurance throughout her journey. Additionally, she acknowledged the overwhelming support from the public during this challenging time.
âWe hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery,â the princess said.
She ended her heartfelt message by saying that she was also keeping âall those whose lives have been affected by cancerâ in her thoughts.
âFor everyone facing this disease, inwhatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone,â Kate concluded in the video statement, which was filmed by BBC Studios at Windsor on Wednesday.

Controversial presenter onOnua TV, Captain Smart, has once again criticized Ghanaian pastor Adom Kyei Duah.
In a viral video, Captain Smart expressed frustration over the use of land intended for a factory to instead build a church.
He highlighted the impact of the destroyed factory, which resulted in job losses, contrasting it with the church’s activities, which he believes exploit the vulnerable.
Captain Smart particularly condemned the sale of “Yesu Mogya” (Jesus Blood) by the pastor, questioning the morality of such practices.
He criticized both the pastor and Christians who purchase the product, implying they lack critical thinking skills.

He questioned the rationale behind selling Jesus Christ’s blood, emphasizing that everyone, including Jesus, has limited blood.
Six executives of theNew Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region have filed a petition against Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, who currently serves as the regional chairman.
The petition accuses Wontumi of various shortcomings, including a failure to convene important meetings, neglecting regional executives, and underutilizing party structures.
These allegations suggest a lack of cohesion and effective leadership within the party.
The petitioners are calling for urgent action to address these issues, proposing a postponement of the regional inauguration of the campaign team to allow for a thorough examination and resolution of the concerns raised.
As the NPP faces internal challenges, there is a growing need for the party leadership to respond decisively and navigate the organisation back on track towards its objectives.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, has sparked discussions on X after announcing the suspension of the approval process for newly-vetted ministers nominated by the president.
Bagbin’s decision, made on March 20, came in response to a presidential directive instructing Parliament to hold off on forwarding the bill on Human Sexual Rights and Family Values to the president for assent.
This directive was issued pending the Supreme Court’s determination of cases related to the anti-gay bill.
The Speaker’s move has triggered various reactions, with Attorney-General Godfred Dame suggesting that Bagbin may have been misled or misinformed in making his decision.
On X, users have been actively sharing their views on this matter, making the Speaker’s actions a trending topic.
Clement Apaak remarked, “Stop blaming Rt. Hon. Speaker Bagbin and the NDC minority caucus; the majority caucus has fallen on its own dagger.”
Similarly, @babamusah08 stated, “Thanks to Speaker Hon Alban S.K. Bagbin for stamping his authority and not bowing to the whims and caprices of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“Ghana is not Nana Addoâs personal property. Our democracy cannot be sacrificed on the altar of Akufo Addoâs egos.”

âIn the circumstance, you are kindly requested to cease and desist from transmitting the bill to the President until the matter before the Supreme Court is resolved,â Mr. Bediatuo stated.
Numerous Members of Parliament have voiced their discontent regarding the directive from the Presidency, with former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu labelling the letter as a threat to Ghana’s democratic principles.
During a discussion on Ghana Kasa on Kasapa 102.5FM, Kofi Akpaloo remarked that President Akufo-Addo should refrain from signing the bill at this particular juncture.
“Iâm not sure anybody in his right sense occupying the seat President Akufo-Addo is currently sitting on, will sign the anti-LGBT bill. The countryâs economy is now recovering from the devastation caused by COVID-19, and the negative effects of the Russia-Ukraine war on our economy. Thereâs too much hardship in the country.”
“You recall the threat issued by the US Ambassador when the bill was passed in Parliament. We are not self-sufficient as a country, we depend on others to survive. I donât support anyone practising LGBTQ activities, however, we should not do things out of emotions.
Have you ever heard that Saudi Arabia and Qatar which frown on LGBTQ activities have ever gone for a loan from any country before? As a country, let us put our things right economically, then any president can boldly and fearlessly sign the bill into law.”
Following recent internet disruptions, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has addressed concerns about the inaccurate imposition of the E-Levy on certain electronic transactions.
The GRA explained that the interruption in internet connectivity affected the real-time routing of electronic transactions to the Electronic Transfer Levy Management and Assurance System (ELMAS), prompting them to take immediate action to rectify the issue.
To mitigate the impact of the internet outage, the GRA has implemented temporary measures known as “Offline Transactions.”
These measures ensure that the E-Levy is applied only to eligible transactions, even if there are delays in routing due to the internet disruption.
Additionally, the GRA is committed to correcting any wrongful charges that may have occurred during this period.
They acknowledge that some Charging Entities may have mistakenly deducted E-Levy for transactions exempt from such charges.
To address this, the GRA is working closely with Charging Entities to quickly identify and reimburse any incorrect deductions.
They also stated that Charging Entities are responsible for reimbursing customers for any wrongly applied E-Levy charges, following the completion of the GRA’s refund processes.
Through these proactive measures, theGRA aims to ensure a smooth and equitable E-Levy collection process, despite the challenges caused by internet disruptions.

According to a report from citinewsroom.com, the houses targeted belonged to the Jahori tribe, and the incident is believed to be linked to an ongoing conflict between the Bole Overlord and the Jahori community.
The dispute stems from a longstanding land disagreement between the Bole community and the Jahori tribe, leading to escalating tensions and mutual threats between the two groups.
Legal action initiated by Bole Wura Safo Kutugefeso in 2023 at the Tamale High Court against the Jahoris culminated in a court ruling in favor of the Jahori tribe on February 6, 2024.
During a court session on March 21, 2024, Justice Richard Mac Kogyapwah, the presiding judge, issued an injunction preventing Bole Wura from involvement in Jahori lands until a final settlement is reached.
Following this decision, the arrest of Alex, Bole Wura’s brother, and a sub-chief was ordered. However, this action led to outrage among the youth in Bole, resulting in the burning of houses belonging to the Jahori community.
In response to these events, Stephen Obeng Darko, legal counsel for the Jahori clan, emphasized the importance of adhering to the court’s injunction against Bole Wura’s interference in Jahori lands and affairs.
Democracy Hub and other 23 applicants have sued the Ghana Police Service over the unlawful arrest, torture, and detention of the protestors during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration on September 21, 2023.
In a press release issued by a member of Democracy Hub, Benjamin Akuffo Darko, he said the legal action taken represents a crucial step in the fight against impunity and the defense of democratic freedoms in Ghana.
âAs you would recall, on the morning of September 21, more than fifty police officers encircled and aggressively apprehended demonstrators who had congregated to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to protest. These citizens were then forcibly transported to the Regional Police Headquarters in Accra, where they faced further assaults and were detained without just cause.
âThanks to the diligent efforts of several volunteer lawyers, the detainees were released after enduring ten hours of unjustified detention, extortion, and torture,â he said.
âIn response, Democracy Hub and the protestors have filed a case at the Human Rights Court in Accra on March 21, 2024. The applicants contend that the treatment they were subjected to not only violates their fundamental rights of assembly and expression but also undermines the principles of justice and accountability in governance,â he added.

Renowned sports journalist Jerome Otchere has strongly criticised the disrespectful insults directed at Black Stars assistant coach John Paintsil by Adom TV’s Patrick Osei Agyemang, also knownas Countryman Songo.
Otchere, a former editor of Kotoko Express, expressed his dismay over Songo’s verbal abuse of Paintsil on his social media page on Friday, March 22, 2024.
He condemned Songo’s behaviour as a violation of journalistic ethics and emphasized the importance of condemning such actions.
Otchere also criticized Songo for resorting to insults when addressing individuals with differing opinions. While acknowledging Paintsil’s comments on the ‘Save Ghana Football’ demonstration, Otchere stressed the importance of media professionals maintaining decorum and respect in their discourse.
âSongoâs verbal abuse of @GhanaBlackstars Deputy Coach, John Painstil, on live television and radio is utterly condemnable. Multimedia must take a grim view of his misconduct and act accordingly because such a stream of unwarranted, barefaced, hateful, insults is not entertained in any civil society.
âWhat kind of media culture are we building? I know he and of course, his admirers will disagree with me and predictably, they will let me have my dose of the uncouth language they speak of all who dissent on his style of sports presentation.
âAt this stage, I do not care because some of these things should be called what they are â WRONG! They must have no place in sane media and civil society. I am not perfect but if in our work or lives, our duty is not to set good examples for others to follow, then we are wasting whatever we have been given.
âWe all have our take on anyone working for the Black Stars. We all like or do not like one or two things the team and their officials do. That is normal but to mount media platforms to wash a national figure in the manner, Songo must be rejected by all right-thinking members of the sports and media fraternity,â he shared on X (formerly Twitter).
A circulating video on social media captures Songo directing inappropriate and ethically questionable remarks towards John Paintsil following Paintsil’s appointment as deputy coach of the Black Stars.
Songo appears to have taken offense at Paintsil’s public statement regarding a demonstration held on February 14, 2024, interpreting it as a personal attack since Songo was involved in organizing the protest.
Meanwhile, John Paintsil is currently in Moroccowith the Black Stars, preparing for their upcoming match against Nigeria on Friday, March 22, 2024. The team will then face Uganda on March 26 to conclude the international break for March 2024.

However, as the match progressed, Tilapia began to tire, allowing Nlandu to gain momentum and launch a comeback with relentless attacks.
In moments of exhaustion, Tilapia resorted to holding onto the ropes and clinching his opponent to catch his breath and evade potential knockouts.

Djiku’s decision makes him the fifth player to opt out of the squad for various reasons, joining Thomas Partey, Joseph Paintsil, Mohammed Kudus, and Inaki Williams.
While the Ghana Football Association has not officially confirmed Djiku’s absence, 23 out of the 26 invited players are currently available for selection.

Minister of Health designate, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, has made a commitment to allocate all proceeds generated from the sale of his book “Fellow Ghanaians” towards the construction of new wards at hospitals in the Nkoranza Municipality of the Bono East Region and Lekma Hospital in the Greater Accra region.
The book “Fellow Ghanaians” offers a comprehensive narrative detailing Ghana’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the “whole of government and whole of society” approach adopted.
It chronicles the timeline from the initial discovery of the virus in Ghana to the rapid development, adoption, and execution of containment measures.
Additionally, the book covers the imposition of restrictions, the procurement and distribution of vaccines, and the subsequent relaxation of these restrictions by Ghanaian authorities.
During the launch of the first copy of “Fellow Ghanaians” in Accra, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo presided over the event, where the first copy was sold for GH¢1 million to Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong of Jospong Group.
Subsequent copies were purchased by Tobinco Group and an anonymous individual for GH¢500,000 each.
The Chief of Staff, acting on behalf of the President, bought the fourth copy for GH¢200,000, while the remaining copies were auctioned for prices ranging from GH¢10,000 to GH¢1,000.
Dr. Okoe Boye emphasized the importance of documenting Ghana’s journey in combating COVID-19 as a member of the response team. He believes that the book’s publication sets Ghana apart as the only country to have documented its pandemic response in such detail.
âThis book was written absolutely out of an effort to tell our story ourselves, to honor the memory of those we lost, and to acknowledge the courage of the nationâs leader in those perilous times. There is no commercial intent behind it; in pursuit of this position, all inflows from this auction and sales of this book will go to the building of health facilities in Nkoranza in the Bono East Region as well as the Lekma Hospital in the Greater Accra regionâ he stated.
During his address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that “Fellow Ghanaians” is more than just a titleâit serves as a significant representation of the unity that unites us as a nation. He commended Dr. Okoe Boye for authoring the book, noting its importance as a historical record for future generations to understand how Ghana tackled the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
âThe title of the book by one of the exceptional young appointees in my government is truly humbling. It is the testament of the resilience and strength of the Ghanaian spirit, even in the face of unprecedented challenges. It is the tribute of the complex acts of kindness, courage, and sacrifice that define our response to the pandemic.
But beyond its significance to me personally, âFellow Ghanaiansâ represents something much greater; it is the symbol of hope and inspiration for future generations, a reminder that even in our darkest times, we can find light and strength in our unity.â
The President stressed, âAs we reflect on the pages of this book and the account it contains, let us remember the lessons we have learned and the progress we have made; let us commit ourselves to the values that bind us together as Ghanaians â compassion, resilience, and solidarity.â
Policy analyst and advocacy officer specializing in sovereign debt management, Shem Joshua Otieno, has highlighted Africa’s financial challenges amidst a persistently challenging global economic environment.
He expressed concern over the continent’s significant debt burden, which has reached a staggering total of US$1.13 trillion as of 2024, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB). This represents a monumental 374.8 percent increase from 2000 to 2024.
Discussing the alarming debt-to-GDP ratios in various African countries, Otieno noted Egypt’s ratio averaging 86 percent, Sudan’s reaching a concerning 198 percent, Tunisia’s standing at 83 percent, and Morocco’s at 70 percent. These figures illustrate the economic vulnerability prevalent across the region.
Additionally, Otieno pointed out that countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia, and Mozambique are grappling with debt levels exceeding 100 percent, posing significant challenges to their financial stability and prospects.
Mr. Otieno, who works with the African Forum and Network on Debt and Development (AFRODAD), said this during the opening session of the 4th edition of African Media Debt Initiative (AFROMEDI) in Abidjan, CĂ´te dâIvoire.
He pointed out that private creditors are increasingly dominating the fiscal situation, which has led to a difficult financial situation.
âOver the years, these private entities have emerged as crucial sources of financing for African governments, providing an alternative route to evade the stringent conditions often attached to loans from bilateral and multilateral creditors,â he said.
Mr. Otieno predicts that Africa’s creditor landscape will continue to be diverse, with a notable focus on multilateral organizations, emerging bilateral creditors such as BRICS lenders, and the ongoing involvement of private creditors.
Explaining the reasons behind the continent’s significant debt burden, he attributed it to excessive government borrowing from 2012 to 2019, fueled by low-interest rates. Consequently, governments are now compelled to reduce spending in essential areas like healthcare and education due to unsustainable debt levels.
Furthermore, Otieno highlighted that over 30 African countries are allocating more funds towards servicing their debt than towards critical sectors like healthcare and education, underscoring the dire financial situation facing the continent.
The dire situation in Africaâs domestic revenue generation, he said, becomes apparent when âwe take a closer look at the numbers. On average, domestic revenue accounts for only 18 percent of the GDP; and for low-income countries, this percentage is even lower â standing at a dismal 12 percent. As a result, there is a heavy reliance on public borrowing to fill the massive gap in economic financingâ.
According to him, depending on international financial institutions like the IMF has its drawbacks. For instance, countries like Ghana and Zambia are compelled to seek IMF assistance with unfavourable terms and associated costs.
âThe cost is paid in the form of compromised social expenditure and stringent policy adjustments. The economic reforms that come with IMF assistance often exacerbate the socio-economic plight of the citizens of these countries,â he fumed.
For instance, the Bank of Ghana reported that provisional gross public debt stood at GHâľ569.35 billion (US$51.67 billion) at the end of Q1-2023, representing 71.1 percent of GDP.
This marked a slight decrease of 20 basis points from the 71.3 percent recorded at the end of Q4-2022.
The debt consisted of external debt totaling GHâľ322.56 billion (US$29.27 billion), equivalent to 40.3 percent of GDP, and domestic debt amounting to GHâľ246.79 billion (US$22.4 billion), representing 30.8 percent of GDP.
In nominal terms, the total public debt stock increased slightly compared to the previous quarter due to the slight improvement in the performance of the local currency against the USD by end-Q4-2022, which reduced the value of the external debt stock in cedi.
The proportion of domestic debt in the total portfolio decreased from 44.7 percent in Q4-2022 to 43.3 percent in Q1-2023, while the proportion of external debt increased from 55.3 percent to 56.7 percent over the same period.
The 4th edition of the AFROMEDI, organized by AFRODAD, focused on the theme ‘Empowering Media Towards an Impactful African Campaign’.
The three-day event aimed to enhance journalists’ capacity to investigate public debt issues on the continent.
AFRODAD, established in 1996,is a civil society organization serving as a regional platform for lobbying and advocating for debt cancellation and addressing other debt-related issues in Africa.

A research conducted by the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR) in Ghana has revealed that youth in the country face challenges in achieving their economic goals due to limited financial resources and a lack of social and political networks.
Dubbed “Economic Aspirations of Ghanaian Youth: Implications for Youth Employment Policies and Programmes inthe Post-COVID-19 Era,” the research replicated across five other African countries sought to understand the aspirations of African youth as well as their resilience and strategies adopted to pursue their aspirations in the face of militating policy, pandemic, and other challenging environments.
Among other things, the research found the economic aspirations of Ghanaian youth and the youth of Africa to revolve around three key issues.
The issues include the aspiration of African youth to establish their own businesses, combine formal employment with entrepreneurship, and accumulate wealth.
âOut of 1639 young men and women interviewed across the country, the majority indicated that they would like to venture into business (60.2%) as part of their economic aspirations in a post-COVID-19 era. This finding is consistent across both young men (60.3%) and young women (60.1%) in both rural and urban areas.
Their desires of wanting to establish their own businesses in the future are probably a reflection of the growing disappointment of the youth regarding their inability to secure permanent jobs either in the public or private sector following graduation from school.
Gender differences emerged in the types of businesses that the youth would like to establish. On the one hand, the young men spoke more about establishing businesses along the agricultural value chain, such as livestock production and agricultural plantations, as well as fuel stations, trade in spare parts and construction materials. On the other hand, the young women aspired to establish multiple businesses that are traditionally open to women in society.
âTheir occupational aspirations included becoming beauticians, seamstresses, and engaging in trade in agricultural and household appliances. The youth emphasised the importance of securing financial support, realising their economic aspiration of becoming entrepreneurs,â the research found.
The research also found that about 25.7% of respondents wish to combine formal employment with business.
âThus, in addition to self-employment, they placed a high degree of importance on securing professional or salaried employment in fields such as computer science, politics, engineering, banking, nursing, medicine among others. According to them, these jobs are well-paid, prestigious, command respect, and provide good income and financial stability.â
ThePASGR research in Ghana uncovered that young individuals aspire to accumulate wealth as part of their economic ambitions, aiming for financial stability and security. Their desire to amass wealth, including money, property, and household assets, stems not only from personal needs but also from a sense of responsibility towards supporting their families.
However, the study highlighted significant barriers hindering Ghanaian youth from realizing these aspirations, notably the lack of financial capital to start ventures and the absence of social and political connections which are often crucial for economic advancement.
âA majority of both the young women (72.8%) and young men (68.5%) who participated in the study reported lack of money/starting capital as a major barrier to realizing their economic aspirations. As noted earlier, many youths aspire to own businesses in the future, and a key resource needed is financial capital which many of them recognize as a major challenge. There is a consensus among young men and women that financial capital is the major constraint inhibiting today’s youth from realizing their entrepreneurial dreams.
âMoreover, lack of political and social connections was cited by the youth as key challenges. The youth interviewed explained that it was difficult for any young man or woman to secure employment or benefit from government programs that offer business grants or loans to entrepreneurs without political or social connections,â the research found.
Funded by the MasterCard Foundation, the research carried out between March 2021 and December 2023, was replicated across other African countries including Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Nigeria.
During a presentation of the research findings in Accra on March 20, 2024, Joel Otieno, the Coordinator of the African Youth Resilience and Aspirations Project, highlighted the significance of the research outcomes. He stressed that these findings will serve as valuable insights for policymakers and youth empowerment organizations, enabling them to develop tailored solutions to address the challenges faced by the youth across the continent.
âOne of the major findings that we have gotten from the research is that the majority of the youth are interested in starting and owning their own businesses. With that in mind alone, we see that most people are looking at opportunities that can become their own bosses and also where they can have full control of what they do and the activities that they take.
âIn terms of policy, it is how can we then create enough opportunities or provide enough incentives for young people to own their own businesses and ventures. In a way of improving their livelihoods and well-being and this is important as a policy recommendation. Other policy recommendations are to find opportunities for supporting young people financially in accessing financial capital, building their own opportunities in terms of how thebusiness environment is favoring them and also other avenues in which young people can be supported and mentored,â he said.
