  • Bunch of careless, clueless leaders! – Kankam Boadu fumes $195m expenditure on African Games facilities

Sports head at Pure FM in Kumasi, Bright Kankam Boadu, has raised concerns about the wisdom of investing $195 million in new sporting infrastructure, given the apparent challenges in maintaining existing facilities.

Responding to revelations by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, regarding the expenditure of over $195 million on facilities for the 13th African Games, Kankam Boadu questioned the sustainability of these new facilities post-event.

He expressed bewilderment over the country’s ability to allocate such a significant amount to constructing new facilities while struggling to cover basic operational costs like electricity for existing infrastructure.

“We don’t know what we are doing in this country. We were able to spend $195 million on facilities for the African Games but can’t pay ECG. After the construction of the facility, are we going to power them with lanterns? It’s as if we are sick.”

“Parliament’s power was disconnected over debt. Meanwhile, this same Parliament approves funds for the purchase of chairs and cars. This country, those at the top don’t care about those down there,” he said.

At a ministerial press briefing on Monday, March 4, 2024, sports minister Mustapha Ussif provided a breakdown of the expenditure.

According to Mustapha Ussif, “the total contract sum of the facility approved by parliament for the games amounted to $195,255,153 million.”

Borteyman Sports Complex, built by Contractor Construction UK, had a total cost of $145,086,057.54.

Meanwhile, the University of Ghana Stadium and Rugby Stadium had a combined cost of $34,102,135, and the Games Village, constructed by Mawums Ltd, amounted to $16,066,961.20 in expenses.

Two Brighton fans receiving medical treatment in Rome after being stabbed

Two Brighton supporters are hospitalised in Rome after being stabbed on the eve of their team’s Europa League match against AS Roma.

Reports from Italian media indicate that a restaurant employee alerted police shortly after midnight on Wednesday, reporting that two fans had entered seeking assistance after being stabbed nearby.

One of the fans sustained three wounds to his left thigh, while the other was stabbed in the right thigh.

Additionally, they reportedly had a backpack stolen, containing a wallet and documents.

The injured fans, aged 28 and 29, were transported to different hospitals in Rome for treatment.

AS Roma is set to host Brighton in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday.

  • We have to be careful with Salah’s return – Jurgen Klopp

We have to be careful with Salah’s return – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has emphasised the club’s cautious approach towards Mohamed Salah as the forward resumes training following a hamstring injury, just in time for Thursday’s Europa League match against Sparta Prague.

Salah’s comeback serves as a welcome reinforcement for the Premier League leaders as they gear up for the first leg of the round of 16 in Prague, followed by a crucial encounter against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

“Mo Salah has travelled with us, he’s trained for two days and is full of energy,” Klopp said in a news conference on Wednesday.

“We want to be careful, but this is a super intense period of the season. We want to use him. It’s just good news.”

Salah, who has scored 19 goals for Liverpool this season in all competitions, was injured while representing Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations. He has not played since Feb. 17 when he came off the bench and scored in a 4-1 win at Brentford.

“It was an unlikely situation where he had so long out, played an incredible game [versus] Brentford and then was out, that is how it is,” Klopp said.

Klopp clarified that the decision regarding Egypt captain Salah’s participation in the national team during the upcoming international break, particularly for a friendly against New Zealand, is not up to him.

“That will be decided by a different department. Let’s see how long he can play now,” he said. “It’s not up to me; we’re not involved.”

Additionally, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai will be ready for selection. He recently made his return to action in the league after being sidelined for over a month due to a hamstring injury.

  • Its a bit ridiculous; refs treat me like this because I’m new – Jude Bellingham on two-game ban

Its a bit ridiculous; refs treat me like this because I’m new – Jude Bellingham on two-game ban

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham expressed his frustration with the two-game suspension he received in LaLiga, labelling it “a bit ridiculous.”

He suggested that his status as a newcomer to the league might have played a role in the severity of the punishment, stating, “Because I’m new, they want to make an example of me.”

The suspension was imposed by the Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee following Bellingham’s red card during Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Valencia.

Bellingham was sent off for protesting the referee’s decision to blow the whistle just moments before he scored a late winning goal.

Despite providing an assist for Vinícius Júnior in Madrid’s 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig in the Champions League round of 16, Bellingham will be sidelined until March 31 unless the club’s appeal is successful.

“It’s difficult to talk about because there’s an appeal going on,” Bellingham told Movistar after the match. “All I can say is what happened with the referee’s decision to blow the whistle. He’s human, but so am I.

“I didn’t say anything offensive. I feel like at times, because I’m new, they want to make an example of me, which I’m cool with. I have to take responsibility for my actions.

“I think two games is a bit ridiculous but if I have to miss those two games, I’ll support the team from the stands.”

Bellingham faces a two-game suspension, causing him to sit out Madrid’s upcoming La Liga matches against Celta Vigo on Sunday and Osasuna on March 16.

During Madrid’s recent match at Mestalla, Bellingham scored a goal in the 99th minute, seemingly securing a win with the game tied at 2-2.

However, referee Jesus Gil Manzano had already blown the final whistle as Brahim Diaz prepared to cross.

According to Gil Manzano’s report, Bellingham was dismissed for displaying an “aggressive attitude” by repeatedly shouting “it’s a f—ing goal” in English.

Despite Madrid’s efforts, the RFEF’s disciplinary committee found insufficient evidence to challenge the referee’s assessment.

Bellingham’s impressive performance this season includes scoring 16 goals in 22 league appearances, contributing to Madrid’s position at the top of the table.

Additionally, his recent assist against Leipzig adds to his tally of four goals and four assists in six Champions League games for Madrid.

Sam Kerr’s lawyers making efforts to have racial abuse accusation discarded

In an upcoming April hearing in London, Chelsea forward Sam Kerr’s legal representatives will endeavour to have her criminal charge for racially aggravated harassment dismissed from court.

Kerr, aged 30, asserted her innocence during a remote appearance at Kingston upon Thames Crown Court on Monday.

According to court documents shared with ESPN, a further hearing will take place on April 26, when “the defence will be arguing abuse of process.”

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Kerr faces charges of causing harassment, alarm, or distress to a police officer during an incident in Twickenham, southwest London, on January 30, 2023.

If Kerr’s legal team fails to succeed in the upcoming April hearing, a trial is anticipated to occur next February. The trial is expected to span four days, with testimony from two police officers.

Kerr holds a prominent status as one of Australia’s most recognisable personalities.

She boasts the title of Australia’s all-time leading scorer in international football, having netted 69 goals in 128 games. Additionally, she guided the Matildas to the semi-finals of the recent Women’s World Cup.

At the club level, Kerr has been a standout performer, contributing significantly to Chelsea’s success in securing the Women’s Super League title throughout her four seasons with the club.

Her impressive career spans stints in both Australia and the United States.

However, Kerr is currently sidelined due to an ACL injury sustained during a training camp with Chelsea’s women’s team in Morocco in January.

While Australia has secured qualification for the women’s soccer tournament in Paris, Kerr’s participation remains uncertain.

Anna Meares, the Australian Olympic Committee’s Chef de Mission for the Paris Olympics, emphasized that Kerr’s eligibility to represent her country at the Summer Games will be determined by the Australian Olympic Committee.

Meares clarified that although the Matildas have secured qualification, no players have yet been nominated by Football Australia.

  • Spanish prosecutors ponder jail term for Ancelotti for tax fraud; he claims innocence

Spanish prosecutors ponder jail term for Ancelotti for tax fraud; he claims innocence

Spanish state prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of four years and nine months for Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti over allegations of tax fraud against the country’s tax authorities.

According to a statement issued by Madrid’s regional state prosecutor on Wednesday, Ancelotti, aged 64, is accused of committing two instances of tax fraud between 2014 and 2015 related to his income from image rights, totaling more than €1 million ($1.09 million).

Following Real Madrid’s victory over RB Leipzig with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals, Ancelotti refuted the allegations.

“It’s an old story that started years ago,” he told Movistar. “The prosecutor’s office thinks that I was a resident [for tax purposes] and we think I wasn’t. I’ve paid the fine and the money is with the prosecutor’s office.

“I’m convinced that I’m innocent. Let’s see what the judge decides.”

The prosecutor’s statement said that in his income tax filings, the Italian coach “omitted the income corresponding to the exploitation of his image rights that he had transferred to other entities.”

“The Spanish Treasury calculated the loss incurred taking into account rents and income omitted and refunds obtained at €1,062,079 (€386,361 in fiscal year 2014 and €675,718 in fiscal year 2015),” the prosecutor added.

Ancelotti first joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 but was later dismissed in May 2015. After a hiatus, he returned to lead the team in June 2021 and has recently extended his contract until June 2026.

Over the past decade, Spanish tax authorities have scrutinised numerous players and coaches for potential tax irregularities, often related to earnings from image rights.

In 2016, Lionel Messi was found guilty of tax fraud and faced a fine to avoid a prison sentence, while Cristiano Ronaldo admitted to fraud in 2019 and agreed to pay a hefty fine of €19 million.

Similarly, Xabi Alonso was cleared of fraud charges in 2019, a verdict upheld by Spain’s Supreme Court in 2021. The court ruled that Alonso had not attempted to conceal income by transferring his image rights to an offshore entity.

  • Bayern assessing potential choices for their full-back positions

Bayern assessing potential choices for their full-back positions

Sky Sports has provided insights into Bayern Munich’s strategies to bolster their full-back positions.

Starting with the right side, Bayern is closely monitoring Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong as a potential candidate, particularly if certain conditions align.

The 23-year-old has played a significant role in Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga campaign, with a release clause estimated between €40 million and €45 million.

Bayern’s interest in Frimpong could intensify if they appoint a manager who favours a back-three system.

Shifting focus to the left flank, Alphonso Davies is reportedly interested in a move to Real Madrid, with Bayern setting an asking price of €50 million to €60 million for the 23-year-old.

Although no official offer has been made, a transfer appears increasingly likely, especially considering Davies’ salary demands of up to €20 million per year—a figure Bayern is unwilling to match.

According to Sky Sports, AC Milan’s Theo Hernández emerges as a prime candidate to replace Davies. The Frenchman, after spending five years with AC Milan, is reportedly open to a change.

Bayern anticipates needing to offer between €60 million and €70 million for the 26-year-old, and initial discussions have already begun.

Alternatively, Girona’s Miguel Gutiérrez is considered a viable option.

The 23-year-old, who is allowed to depart from LaLiga surprise title contenders, has a release clause ranging between €30 million and €35 million.

João Cancelo desires a longer stay with Barcelona

João Cancelo has expressed his desire to continue his tenure at Barcelona even after the conclusion of his loan spell this season.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently had a meeting with super-agent Jorge Mendes, who represents Cancelo along with his Portugal teammate and fellow loanee at Barça, João Félix.

Both Cancelo and Félix are currently on loan from Manchester City and Atlético Madrid, respectively.

Laporta has previously indicated the club’s interest in making their loan deals permanent.

However, given the financial constraints at the Catalan club, they may need to explore creative solutions to retain the services of both players for the upcoming season.

During the presentation of Ronald Araújo’s new documentary, Cancelo was asked by reporters if he hoped to stay at Camp Nou next season.

He promptly replied with a resounding “yes” before departing from the event.

AS Roma reportedly offers long-sought-after target Dybala to Barcelona

Barcelona is eyeing AS Roma’s Paulo Dybala as a potential transfer target, as reported by Diario Sport.

The 30-year-old forward has been in stellar form this season, notching up 13 goals and seven assists in 26 appearances across various competitions.

Despite his success at Roma, Dybala has reportedly been offered to Barcelona.

Dybala, who has a release clause of €12 million for clubs outside Italy, is interested in a move to Spain, although there have been offers from the Premier League as well.

Barcelona has long admired Dybala, and his relatively affordable release clause, along with his more modest wages compared to his time at Juventus, make him an appealing prospect.

However, signing Dybala could potentially impact the future of João Félix, who is currently on loan at Barcelona from Atlético Madrid.

In addition to Barcelona’s interest, West Ham United has also shown interest in Dybala, while Atletico Madrid has been informed of the situation but has yet to make a final decision.

Reports suggest that Roma is eager to extend Dybala’s contract, and while he is open to their offer, his preference would be to join Barcelona if they pursue him.

Manchester United is reportedly in talks with Kobbie Mainoo regarding a contract extension to reflect his growing importance within the first-team squad.

At just 18 years old, Mainoo has emerged as a key player under manager Erik ten Hag this season, demonstrating remarkable maturity and composure.

Despite signing a new deal with Old Trafford in February 2023, which ties him to the club until 2027, discussions have begun for an improved contract following his impressive performances during the 2023/24 season.

Both the club and Mainoo’s representatives are handling the situation calmly, with a focus on Mainoo’s continued development on the field for the remainder of the season.

Moreover, Mainoo has already triggered several performance-based incentives in his current contract.

Having made 18 senior appearances for United this season, Mainoo recently praised manager Erik ten Hag for aiding his transition from the youth ranks to the first team.

Mainoo is eligible to represent Ghana internationally, a prospect that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Ghanaian national team.

The discussions between Mainoo and Manchester United are expected to intensify over the summer months.

Ablakwa, Sammy Gyamfi lead NDC MPs to ‘commission’ uncompleted National Cathedral to mock govt

Opposition Members of Parliament, led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, employed a satirical approach by staging a symbolic commissioning of the unfinished National Cathedral project.

Their aim was to spotlight what they perceive as the government’s failure to complete the project.

Initially, their efforts to access the construction site were obstructed by security personnel, preventing them from issuing a statement at the location.

Originally scheduled for commissioning on March 6, as mentioned by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in the 2021 budget statement, the cathedral has drawn criticism, particularly from minority MPs dissatisfied with its costs.

Despite being denied access to the site, the minority MPs reached a compromise with security personnel to hold a press conference at the entrance, expressing their discontent with the ongoing project and its expenses.

This symbolic act of commissioning the incomplete National Cathedral highlighted their critique of the government’s handling of the project.

“When the act of parliament had to grind on him [Ofori-Atta], he had to come and beg. Your instructions are that we should not enter, we will not enter, we will stand at the entrance,” Sam George, MP for Ningo-Prampram, said.

Subsequently, they symbolically initiated the commissioning of the cathedral by performing a sod-cutting ceremony on behalf of the president.
“We commission this expensive hole on behalf of Dr. Bawumia, President Akufo-Addo and Ken Ofori-Atta.”

“They mean somebody else; I have not been contacted” – Pianim on claims of being part of veep’s manifesto team

Renowned economist Kwame Pianim stated that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team has not reached out to him to join as an advisor on his manifesto team.

He dismissed reports, claiming his appointment was untrue.

“I think it is fake news; nobody has talked to me; nobody has contacted me. I didn’t know when they were inaugurating it. Maybe it is not me; they mean somebody else but definitely, I have not been contacted,” he told Paa Kwasi Asare on the Business Focus on TV3 on Tuesday, March 5.

The complete roster of the 2024 Manifesto committee was endorsed by Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the communications director of the campaign team.

He designated Kwame Pianim as an advisor to the economic subcommittee of the Manifesto team.

Dr Bawumia charged the committee to engage all stakeholders extensively in the formulation of the manifesto.

A former Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, has been appointed to the chair of the manifesto sub-committee on the economy.

Disgraceful National Peace Council must be disbanded – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, has urged for the disbandment of the National Peace Council due to concerns regarding potential threats to Ghana’s peace.

His comments follow the Council’s boss’s remarks that his outfit is yet to take a stance on Sam George’s advocacy and activism against gay rights in the country.

Sam George, in response, called the council a band of ‘bipartisan hypocrites’ who should be disbanded for the peace of Ghana.

“The Peace Council is a disgrace and a shame. I have said this before and I will say it again. They are hypocrites—extremely hypocritical.

We’ve seen the posture of the Peace Council. The Peace Council has become a political organisation; it should be disbanded for the santity of Ghana’s peace. The Peace Council is a threat to our peace, yes ” he fumed during an appearance on 3FM’s Sunrise on March 5, 2024.

Using the analogy of the biblical story of Essau and Jacob, Sam George chided the members of the Council for having sold their consciences.

“It’s a bunch of hypocrites who have sold their conscience, like Essau sold his birthright for a bowl of porridge. The men and women who sit on the peace council , if they have conscience and if they fear the God that they say they serve and worship, should bow their heads in shame, he fumed.

La Liga gives Jude Bellingham a two-game ban after Valencia-Real clash

Real Madrid’s standout player, Jude Bellingham, faces a two-match suspension from La Liga following his recent red card against Valencia.

This setback means he’ll be sidelined once again for the Spanish giants, having been penalised for his dismissal during a contentious 2-2 draw against Valencia.

Bellingham’s expulsion came in stoppage time after disputing with referee Gil Manzano, following his disallowed goal—a header that he believed to be the match-winner—only for the final whistle to be blown.

Despite Bellingham’s absence being a setback for Madrid, they maintain an impressive eight-point lead at the summit of La Liga and remain strong contenders for the Champions League quarter-finals, having secured a 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the first leg.

The English international has been a prolific force for Madrid this season, contributing 20 goals and eight assists across all competitions since his high-profile £87 million ($107.4 million) transfer from Borussia Dortmund last summer, with the potential fee rising to £108 million ($133 million).

Although Bellingham will miss Madrid’s upcoming league fixtures against Celta Vigo and Osasuna on March 10 and March 16, respectively, he will be eligible to feature in their crucial Champions League last-16 clash against RB Leipzig at home on Wednesday night.

I abhor gay people the most! – Alleged old Facebook post of Dela Sky; lawyer fighting for gay rights now

A post that has surfaced online purported to be the words of defender and advocate for gay rights in Ghana, former Citi FM journalist and lawyer Richard Dela Sky, has surprised many.

In a tweet (screenshot) by X user (formerly Twitter) @receipts guy, it shows an alleged post by the now defender of gay rights cursing homosexuals and expressing his distaste towards them after a gay person reached out to him to help advocate and defend gay rights in Ghana.

The tweet reads,: “Have (sic) just received a shocking email from a self-confessed homosexual based in Accra. Folks, can you imagine the YOUNGMAN is asking me to help him lead what he calls ” a sustained media campaign to pressurise Ghanaian authorities to recognise GAY RIGHTS in all forms?”MASSA, I BEG YOU IN GOD’S NAME; PLEASE TRY ELSEWHEREINFACT if there’s anything I abhor most in this world, it is HOMOS>GOD PUNISH YOU!!!”

    See the screenshot below:

In a turn of events, the journalist who openly cursed the self acclaimed homosexual is now the defender of the promotion and protection of gay rights in Ghana.

He has lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court, alleging that there were an insufficient number of Members of Parliament present in the chamber during the voting process.

Under parliamentary regulations, for a bill to proceed to the president for approval, at least half of Ghana’s 275 MPs must be in attendance and participate in the voting procedure.

The precise number of MPs who participated in the vote last Wednesday has not been disclosed by the Ghanaian media.

The bill, widely criticised by both the UK and the US, along with various rights groups labelling it as regressive, has sparked significant condemnation.

Previously, President Akufo-Addo had indicated his willingness to sign the bill if it reflected the desires of the majority of Ghanaians.

However, he is now aiming to reassure the diplomatic community of Ghana’s steadfast commitment to upholding human rights principles.

He acknowledged that the bill had “raised considerable anxieties in certain quarters of the diplomatic community and amongst some friends of Ghana” that the country may be “turning her back on her, hitherto, enviable, longstanding record on human rights observance and attachment to the rule of law.”

“I want to assure you that no such back-sliding will be contemplated or occasioned,” he added.

“Dumsor and dollar” – Kwame Sefa Kayi lists the two biggest problem of Ghana’s economy

Host of Peace FM’s morning show, Kokrokoo, Kwame Sefa Kayi, also known as Chairman General, has named the two major problems currently facing the current government: “dumsor and dollar.”

The board member of the National Petroleum Authority, during an engagement with Abeiku Santana on Okay FM on March 4, 2024, refused to name and commend some of the government’s achievements when asked, citing that he was not qualified to do that as people are paid to do that.

“You asked for my fair assessment of the current government’s performance and I’m saying that I am not qualified to do so but I can say for a fact that he has two problems and both of them start with a “D”: Dumsor and dollar

I leave the praise singing to those who are paid to do that,” he noted.

Despite Abeiku Santana’s insistence, the chairman general refused to commend the government for any achievement so far, citing ‘fear’ of partisan misinterpretation by some people.

“Abeiku, there are people paid to do that and its their job, not mine. You know why? I’d tell you why. Politics has messed up lots of things in Ghana; hence, if you are careless with your words, people will sew clothes and want to fit you in them. So for me, I will tell you there are only two things: dumsor and dollar.”

9 out of every 10 Ghanaian is a thief because of broken system – Barker Vormawor

Founder and convener of Fix The Country Oliver, Barker Vormawor, has labelled the majority of Ghanaians as thieves due to what he describes as corruption and inefficiency on the part of the Public Procurement Authority.

In a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), the outspoken lawyer and activist called for the disbandment of the Public Procurement Authority over its failed purpose as an agent for sanity created to help streamline and help Ghana save money through competitive procurement.

Oliver contends that the overall procurement system in Ghana rewards corruption rather than promoting fair competition and growth for businesses and as a result, “every 9 in 10 Ghanaian has become or been made a thief!”

He argued that these, which the system has produced, refuse to exit since it continues to reward their nebulous dealings and corrupt practices

“The entire system is broken. And of course, the thieves do not desire the system that rewards their theft to change,” he said.

Lamenting the broken state of the system, he asserted that “the entire system is broken. And of course, the thieves do not desire the system that rewards their theft to change.”

Hence the opposing us who call for reform! In this town. Only the poor desire change. But the thieves have also bought the consciences of the poor. One handout at a time!

  • MoF’s release on anti-gay bill just a tool to sow fear and panic in Ghanaians – Lord Mensah

MoF’s release on anti-gay bill just a tool to sow fear and panic in Ghanaians – Lord Mensah

Senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Professor Lord Mensah, has deemed the press release by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) regarding the implications of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s assent to the LGBTQ+ bill as unnecessary.

During an interview on Morning Starr with Francis Abban on Tuesday, Prof Mensah elaborated that the foreign support for the 2024 budget is of little significance to cause alarm among Ghanaians if it doesn’t materialise.

“Go into the 2024 budget and look at the grants that we are targeting, which is just about 3.3 percent of our GDP. So it tells you that it’s just a microcosm of what we do in the country. We may do without them so I don’t see the reason why we should get ourselves worried,” Prof. Lord Mensah stated.

According to him, the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout for Ghana also has nothing on the LGBT+ bill.

“Again, the IMF programme never talked about LGBTQ. So if the president goes ahead to assent the bill and we manage very well and we do what the IMF is looking out for, we should be able to get the releases.

“The World Bank will also be supporting us because the conditions behind the World Bank was that if we are able to meet the IMF target and continue to have the programme with them, they will be supporting us,” the senior lecturer stated.

He continued: “So it has nothing to do with the bill, the release the Ministry brought is just a panic statement that they are throwing into the system which was not necessary. Let the President do his job, he should go ahead and put his pen to the bill and then we will see what will happen.”

    Background

According to the Ministry of Finance, Ghana faces a potential loss of US$3.8 billion in World Bank financing over the next five to six years and risks derailing the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program if the bill is assented to.

In a statement, the Ministry outlined several challenges Ghana may encounter due to the passage of the bill by Parliament.

    “The expected US$300 million financing from the First Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support) which is currently pending Parliamentary approval might not be disbursed by the Bank when it is approved by Parliament.;

    “On-going negotiations on the Second Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support) amounting to US$300 million may be suspended; On-going negotiations for US$250 million to support the Ghana Financial Stability Fund may be suspended;

“Disbursement of undisbursed amounts totaling US$2.1 billion for on-going projects will be suspended; and Preparation of pipeline projects and declaration of effectiveness for two projects totaling worth US$900million may be suspended. Full details of the World Bank portfolio are attached as Appendix 1 & 2.

“In total, Ghana is likely to lose US$3.8 billion in World Bank Financing over the next five to six years. For 2024 Ghana will lose US$600 million Budget support and US$250 million for the Financial Stability Fund. This will negatively impact on Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and exchange rate stability as these inflows are expected to shore the country’s reserve position,” the statement read in parts.

They are still being paid – Ablakwa blows cover on National Cathedral board members

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has made allegations that members of the Board of the National Cathedral Project continue to receive payments from public funds.

During an interview on TV XYZ on March 5, 2024, prior to his planned media engagement at the purportedly ‘abandoned’ site of the project, Ablakwa also advocated for the dissolution of the National Cathedral Board.

“We are all going to see the world’s most expensive pit and we will be engaging the media and serving a clear notice that all these people keeping our money must prepare to refund our money.

“That whole National Cathedral secretariat must be dissolved. The board must be dissolved. Tomorrow, I will reveal monies that are still being paid to the board—all of them; they are still being paid,” he alleged.

The Member of Parliament is scheduled to address the press today, March 6, 2024, at 2 pm, as indicated by a flyer shared on his social media platforms.

Accompanying his post was a caption stating his intention to engage with the media at what he termed the “World’s Most Expensive Pit,” on the same day President Akufo-Addo vowed to inaugurate his US$450 million (GHS5.7 billion) legacy cathedral, which he deems the “priority of all priorities.”

However, the official project handle has labelled Ablakwa’s media appearance as ‘fake.’

Ablakwa has been prominently vocal among lawmakers, demanding transparency concerning the use of public funds for the cathedral project.

He has highlighted corporate governance breaches, financial irregularities, and identity fraud within the project’s Board of Trustees through social media posts.

His press engagement coincides with social media mockery directed at the government, referencing a screenshot of former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s statement during a budget presentation, suggesting that the project would be inaugurated on March 6, 2024.

The project’s progress has been hindered by funding challenges, and the speculated inauguration date remains unconfirmed.

Luis Enrique not one of my problems – Mbappe on alleged feud with PSG coach

Kylian Mbappe has dispelled rumours of a disagreement with PSG manager Luis Enrique, asserting that he is currently managing other matters.

The French striker showcased his prowess by scoring two goals as Paris Saint-Germain triumphed over Real Sociedad 2-1 in the second leg of their round-of-16 Champions League encounter, securing their place in the quarterfinals.

After their progression, Mbappe refuted any speculation regarding tensions with manager Luis Enrique.

Speaking to Canal+ after the match, the 25-year-old said, “My response on the ground? No, I don’t have a particular message. I still want to play in the Champions League.

It’s an important competition. But I will never be a player who hides. Is everything settled with Luis Enrique? There is no problem with Luis Enrique, even if people think I do. I have many problems, but the coach is not one of them.”

The French captain is poised to depart PSG at the end of the current season as he prepares to join La Liga giants Real Madrid during the summer transfer window.

A verbal agreement has already been reached between the player and the club, and an official agreement is expected to be finalised soon.

In their next fixture, Les Parisiens will face Reims at Parc des Princes in Ligue 1 action on Sunday.

FACT-CHECK: GNA report on Prof Naana Jane as NDC running mate false

On March 4, 2024, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) published a story by Christopher Arko concerning the selection of a running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

The article’s lead stated, “The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unanimously endorsed the nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Running Mate to John Dramani Mahama.”

In the second paragraph, the writer mentioned that the flagbearer had responded to the development via a post on Twitter (now X).

Mr Mahama, in a tweet shortly after the endorsement, said, “Naana Jane is God-fearing, a distinguished scholar, a conscientious public servant and a role model,” the story added.

    Checks

GhanaWeb Fact-Check Desk could not find any recent tweets on Mahama’s X handle relative to his choice of running mate for the 2024 race.

His only tweet in March 2024 at the time of filing this report was related to an engagement he had in Nigeria.

Curiously, however, a deep search of the exact quotes attributed to Mahama in the GNA report showed that he had indeed tweeted about Prof. Naana Jane’s qualities as a running mate but that was as far back as June 2020.

His full tweet in 2020 read: “@OfficialNDCGh, this afternoon, unanimously, endorsed my nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as my running mate for the December 2020 election. She is God-fearing, a distinguished scholar, a conscientious public servant & a role model.”

Also checks with some insiders in the party indicated that the party will go by its March 7 timeline for the announcement of a running mate as communicated late last month in a statement issued by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.

GhanaWeb sources have, however, confirmed that the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast will be announced as the running mate for the upcoming polls.

Verdict – GNA’s story is false

    By Christopher Arko

Accra, March 4 GNA – The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unanimously endorsed the nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Running Mate to John Dramani Mahama.

Mr Mahama, in a tweet shortly after the endorsement, said, “Naana Jane is God-fearing, a distinguished scholar, a conscientious public servant and a role model.”

This is the second time the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and Minister of Education will be partnering with former President Mahama on the ticket of the NDC for a major election in 2024.

Before her selection, several names were floated as potential running mates, which included Julius Debrah, former Chief of Staff; Dr Kwabena Duffour, former Finance Minister and Governor of Bank of Ghana; Mr Kwame Awuah Darko, former Chief Executive of Tema Oil Refinery and BOST, Kojo Bonsu, former Mayor of Kumasi; Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, the NDC Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey Constituency.

The former president submitted the name of his preferred running-mate to the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders of the party for scrutiny.

The party, through its General Secretary, Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, indicated in an earlier statement that the NEC and the Council of Elders of the party were preparing to deliberate on Mr Mahama’s choice for running mate.

In addition, the former President Mahama is expected to make an official announcement of his running mate to the public on March 7, 2024.

  • You signed e-levy bill into law even when it was still in court, what is so strange about the gay bill? – Prof. Gatsi to Akufo Addo

You signed e-levy bill into law even when it was still in court, what is so strange about the gay bill? – Prof. Gatsi to Akufo Addo

Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, Professor John Gatsi, has voiced criticism against President Akufo-Addo’s decision to postpone assenting to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill until after a Supreme Court ruling on the matter.

Initially, President Akufo-Addo remarked on the passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill by Parliament, highlighting that Ghanaians await the Supreme Court’s decision before any action is taken.

However, Gatsi has criticised this stance.

But Prof. Gatsi, speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight programme on March 4, questioned the basis of the President’s assertion because the bill is yet to become law, adding, “When E-levy [Electronic Transaction Service Levy] was sent to court, the President still went ahead to sign the E-levy bill into law.”.

“What is so significant or strange about this bill that the bill has not even matured into law and some people are seeking some explanation to be provided by the Supreme Court about this bill?” he quizzed.

According to Prof. Gatsi, the country is not yet at the point of Supreme Court interpretation, stating, “We don’t have a law so to speak, because technically we have not completed the process.”

He further asserted that all the events unfolding after the bill’s passage aim to prevent it from receiving presidential assent and becoming law.

Gatsi emphasised the significant amount of lobbying activity being conducted to oppose the signing of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

“It sounds like there is a heavy dose of lobbying activities going on [in] these last minutes of the process. We knew that the constituents of the world that are not happy with the stand of Ghana on LGBTQ were very clear. All attempts were made to stop the process in parliament that didn’t happen,” he said, adding that the international community, having seen the signs of a unanimous decision to pass the bill in parliament, has occasioned “the upscale of lobbying activities across the board.”.

“And now they are using our own finance ministry to blackmail Ghanaians to support the President not to sign the bill,” Prof. Gatsi added.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry has urged President Akufo-Addo not to assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. The Ministry, in a statement, emphasised that Ghana could lose over US$3.8 billion in World Bank financing should the bill be enacted into law.

Some of the areas the Finance Ministry feared World Bank financing could be cut include the US$300 million First Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation.

Another US$300 million on-going negotiation for the Second Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation, and another US$250 million for the Ghana Financial Stability Fund.

Also, the finance ministry feared the disbursement of US$2.1 billion for ongoing projects and another US$900 million worth of projects would cease when the bill becomes law.

Speaker of Parliament sued over anti-gay bill – Sam George

One of the leading proponents and sponsors of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, MP for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has disclosed that the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin, has been dragged to court by one of the leading advocates of gay rights over the anti-gay bill.

He has been in court since last year , the Ningo-Prampram MP said.

He made the disclosure during an interview on 3FM’s Sunrise on March 5, 2024, during discussions on the controversies surrounding the anti-LGBTQ bill.

“From where I sit, its sad that people don’t know that the speaker since last year has been sued for doing his job as a speaker. There’s an ongoing case in which the speaker is having to pay lawyers to personally represent him.

He has been sued by a lady named Amanda Odoi, another puppet of the gay lobby. She is being funded and used by the gay lobby to do what she’s been doing.”

Who are you to tell us what to do ? – Kwesi Pratt blasts US Ambassador over anti-LGBT+ bill

Managing Editor of The Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has criticized the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, for what he perceives as consistent interference in Ghana’s internal affairs, particularly regarding the controversial anti-LGBT+ bill.

During a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on March 5, 2024, Pratt expressed his discontent with Ambassador Palmer’s frequent responses to statements made by Ghanaian government officials.

He emphasised that ambassadors, including Palmer, should not overstep their boundaries by attempting to dictate the policies of a sovereign nation.

Pratt questioned the ambassador’s authority to intervene in Ghana’s domestic matters, highlighting the need for respect for Ghana’s sovereignty. He stressed the importance of diplomatic relations being conducted with mutual respect and without undue interference in each other’s internal affairs.

“The US ambassador has no power to live in the country and dictate to us what to do and what not to do.

Can Ghana’s ambassador to the US go to America and tell them what to do there? Can he hold a press conference and tell Joe Biden to stop the things he has been doing?

“Why? Are we still going back to colonisation? I am even shy of the whole thing,” he said.

He urged Ghanaians to protect their autonomy, adding, “What I want to say is that whether you’re gay or not, I don’t care, but what I care about is for us to protect our freedom, not to allow the American ambassador to think she is more important than our president, for her to be giving our president instructions.

“It is horrible for you as an ambassador to be responding to our ministers and the president. Who are you? Who are you to dictate to us?” he lamented.

Virginia Palmer, in a post shared on X on Thursday, February 29, 2024, warned of dire consequences to Ghana’s economy and international reputation if the bill is signed into law, a claim she has previously stated.

She indicated that the bill passed by parliament infringes on the basic human rights of homosexual Ghanaians and the right to freedom of speech.

“I am saddened because some of the smartest, most creative, most decent people I know are LGBT.

“The bill Parliament passed takes away not only their basic human rights but those of all Ghanaians because it undermines their constitutional rights to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of the press,” she wrote on X.

The ambassador added, “It will be bad for public order and public health. If enacted, it will also hurt Ghana’s international reputation and Ghana’s economy.”

On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, the Parliament of Ghana approved the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBT+ bill.

This legislation, which is now pending presidential assent, prohibits activities related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals and criminalizes the promotion, advocacy, and funding of such activities.

Persons caught in these acts will be subjected to a six-month to three-year jail term, with promoters and sponsors facing a three to five-year jail term.

Liar! No case has been filed in the Supreme Court Sammy Gyamfi ‘exposes’ Akufo-Addo on anti-LGBT+ Bill

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi, criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his stance on approving the anti-LGBT+ Bill.

Gyamfi disputed the accuracy of the president’s statement regarding the timing of a lawsuit filed at the Supreme Court.

While President Akufo-Addo mentioned that a suit was filed on Monday, March 4, Gyamfi pointed out that the filing actually occurred on Tuesday, March 5.

President Akufo-Addo had previously stated, in a statement dated Monday, March 4, that he would decide on the anti-gay bill’s approval after addressing all associated matters, including those yet to be brought to his attention.

He cited a lawsuit filed by a private individual challenging the bill’s constitutionality as a reason for the delay in his decision-making process.

However, according to Gyamfi, the president’s assertion is inaccurate.

“Why did the President lie to the nation and international community yesterday, that a suit had been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill when he knew that to be false?” he questioned.

He continued to accuse the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of orchestrating the suit aimed at providing a pretext for President Akufo-Addo to delay assenting to the bill.

“This legal action is nothing but an NPP-sponsored suit, calculated to serve as a convenient excuse for the President to refuse to assent the Bill on Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values,” he added.

“The NPP pretended to support the anti-LGBTQI Bill in the open, only to stab the Christian community, the Muslim community, traditional authorities, and Ghanaians at large, in the back.

“Shame on President @NAkufoAddo, his complicit Vice, Alhaji @MBawumia and the entire NPP, for toying with the values of our nation and the future of our children. The scales are off. Ghanaians now know who the real gay lobbyists are,” he added.

Renowned Ghanaian journalist Richard Sky made a significant move by submitting a motion to the Supreme Court on March 5. In this motion, he urged the president to abstain from approving the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024.

Richard Sky’s motion outlines multiple reliefs sought, all of which are based on constitutional provisions and fundamental rights. These reliefs include declarations asserting that the bill’s passage by parliament violated various articles of the constitution, thereby rendering it null, void, and ineffective.

    Below is the full X post by Sammy Gyamfi;

As can be seen on the face of the writ, the suit challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill was filed in the Supreme Court of Ghana today, March 5, 2024, at about 1 pm.

This begs the question of how President Akufo-Addo could refer to the suit in his speech yesterday when the same was filed only today.

How did President Akufo-Addo know, as of yesterday, that the suit had already been filed at the Supreme Court, when the same was filed only today?

Why did the President lie to the nation and international community yesterday, that a suit had been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill when he knew that to be false?

This legal action is nothing but an NPP-sponsored suit, calculated to serve as a convenient excuse for the President to refuse to assent to the Bill on Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values.

The NPP pretended to support the anti-LGBTQI Bill in the open, only to stab the Christian community, the Muslim community, traditional authorities and Ghanaians at large, in the back.

Speech therapist pushes for affordability and accessibility in hearing interventions

Ghanaian speech therapists have advocated for policy interventions that make hearing aids and interventions affordable and accessible to promote hearing care for all.

“Advocating for policies that make hearing aids and interventions more affordable and accessible is a crucial step towards realising the vision of comprehensive hearing care for all,” she said.

Salima made the call in an article co-authored and published with Zulaiha Hamza, also a speech therapist, in commemoration of World Hearing Day (March 3, 2024) under the theme, “Changing Mindsets: Let’s Make Ear and Hearing Care a Reality for All.”

According to her, the theme extended beyond the individual level to address systemic challenges that impede access to ear and hearing care.

“Affordability, awareness, and accessibility to quality healthcare services are factors that influence the effectiveness of ear care initiatives,” she said.

She called for a commitment by people towards changing mindsets to make ear and hearing care a fundamental right for all.

“Children, in particular, stand to benefit significantly from a transformation in mindsets regarding ear and hearing care. Early detection of hearing issues and timely interventions can play a pivotal role in shaping a child’s linguistic and cognitive development,” she stated.

The speech therapist further called for the dispelling of myths and breaking down of barriers associated with hearing loss by embracing a culture of inclusivity and diversity in communication styles.

She added that there was a need for a paradigm shift in how people perceive hearing health, moving away from stigmatisation and misconceptions towards a more inclusive and empathetic approach.

“By doing so, we not only address the immediate needs of those with hearing loss but also pave the way for a more inclusive and interconnected world,” Salima intimated.

Salima, a trailblazing speech therapist in the Upper West Region, initiated a diagnostic programme for communication disorders among children and teachers at St. Don Bosco Special School in Loho.

Through her non-profit organisation, Khad-san Africa, Salima aims to empower individuals, particularly children, to overcome communication hurdles, unlock their full potential, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.

  • Sissala maize sellers stranded, forced to sell stock at cheaper prices over lack of buyers

Sissala maize sellers stranded, forced to sell stock at cheaper prices over lack of buyers

Maize sellers in Sissala in the Upper West Region are facing challenges finding buyers for their produce weeks after harvest.

Despite the abundance of maize, known buyers are nowhere to be found, forcing sellers to offer their commodity at lower prices than expected.

According to reports from the Ghana News Agency (GNA), maize sellers interviewed expressed their frustration at the situation.

Some have been unable to sell their stock, while others, in desperate need, are compelled to sell at prices below the standard rates.

A prominent maize dealer, Alhaji Maize Adinan Bajin, revealed the decline in maize prices over time.

In December 2023, a bag of maize was sold for GH¢370.00, which subsequently dropped to GH¢365.00, then GH¢320.00, and currently stands at GH¢300.00.

Traditionally, after Christmas, many buyers would flock to the Sissala area to purchase maize.

However, the current scenario is markedly different, with a notable absence of buyers.

Only one company remains willing to purchase maize, but at a reduced price, exacerbating the challenges faced by sellers.

“We can’t get buyers and as farmers, we need to sell and clear our new fields, buy fertilizer and prepare our new fields, but we are at a standstill and stranded,” Alhaji Bajin said.

“More challenged are the smallholder farmers and women who are having difficulty selling their maize due to the fewer buyers.”

“Looking at the amount of inputs that were used in producing the maize, it’s now difficult to break even, and this could make us indebted to our suppliers.”

He said he currently has 5,000 mini bags of maize that he has not been able to sell and called on the government to intervene by regulating the price, as they feared reducing their farm sizes next season if there was no support.

A woman maize farmer said, “I had to carry my two maize bags to the WARC shop, a maize aggregation company, to sell, but I was told I would receive my money the following day since the company’s mode of payment was mobile money and that had to be done the next day.”.

“A few years ago, buyers would trace to my house and even buy the maize and pay me cash; this situation is affecting us.”

Mr. Nabong Ayie, a farmer, said, “I have tried selling 2000 bags for the past two weeks and nobody is calling to buy. I need money badly to do other things, and now I have to wait until a buyer calls.”.

Mr. John Dimah, a former National Best Maize Farmer, bemoaned the absence of buyers, saying,This year we are stranded; I still have some 15,000 mini bags of maize unsold, hoping to get a buyer.”

He attributed the situation to disruptions in the Sahelian region, favourable growing conditions in Ghana’s Middle Belt, and the potential influx of foreign maize into the market.

He urged farmers to consider diversifying into crops such as sorghum, sesame, and soybeans.

Ignore the Executive, there will be no increase in transport fares – Concerned Drivers Association

Public Relations Officer (P.R.O.) for the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, has contradicted claims of an increase in transportation fares, asserting that there will be no hike, contrary to an earlier announcement.

The announcement of a 30 percent increase in transport fares, scheduled to take effect on March 7, 2024, came from members of the Transport Operators Union and some regional executives of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.

They pointed to the government’s perceived failure to address their concerns as the rationale behind the decision.

However, Agboado stated that the regional executives lacked the authority to make such a decision, emphasising that announcements and decisions regarding fare adjustments must come from the national executives.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show, Agboado revealed that the regional executives faced sanctions for their unauthorised actions.

“The three regional officers, as we know, are very powerful in terms of the transport sector; that is, the Greater Accra, Central, and Ashanti Regions. They are very powerful and are very needed in transport operations.

“But they should not take their numbers or the size of their circle to do whatever they want, like they did yesterday.

“As I speak to you, we have sanctioned them; we have suspended them for three months,” he explained.

Mr. Agboado mentioned that the coalition of commercial transport operators is yet to agree on a date for a possible increase in transport fares.

    Background

Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana jointly announced a 30 percent increase in transport fares, effective Thursday, March 7.

In a press release issued on Monday, March 4, the two organisations cited the government’s inadequate response to their concerns as the reason for the fare hike.

They emphasised the continuous rise in fuel prices, affecting their livelihoods and posing challenges to their operations.

Describing the fare adjustment as crucial for business sustainability, they urged the government to engage with their leaders to ensure a smooth implementation of the fare adjustments.

“The fare adjustments are essential to ensure the financial viability of the transportation sector and to maintain the quality of service provided to the public.

“The failure of the government to address this critical issue has left us with no choice but to consider fare increments as a means of coping with the escalating operational costs.”

“We are calling on the government and relevant authorities to engage in constructive dialogue with our leaders to address the challenges faced by our sector and to implement fare adjustments that reflect the current economy.”

Haaland also pointed out Messi’s pivotal role in Argentina’s triumph in the World Cup, highlighting it as a significant achievement that distinguishes him from other players.

“He won those trophies and also won the World Cup. He is the best of all time, in my opinion,” Haaland said.

Asked about his dip in performance lately, the Manchester City striker said, “Last year I scored 36 goals and was the top scorer. This season I am still the top scorer, with 18, so you can think it’s been a good season or not for me.

“I think we are doing quite well as a team, and that’s my goal. I have missed, I have missed many chances, and I will surely miss in the future, and people will criticise me. Do I have to think about it? No.”

Two of Ghana’s best swimmers to miss 2023 African Games over academic issues

As Ghana’s swimming team prepares for the 2023 African Games, they face the absence of two key swimmers, Kaya and Zaira Forson, whose participation could have greatly bolstered the country’s medal prospects.

Unfortunately, the Forson sisters will not be taking part in the 13th African Games, which Ghana is hosting. According to a report by 3News, Kaya and Zaira made the difficult decision to opt out of the competition due to clashes with their academic commitments in France.

Farida Alhassan, the Treasurer of the Ghana Swimming Association, confirmed this news, expressing concern over the impact of their absence on the team’s chances of securing medals.

She explained that although the sisters initially intended to participate in the African Games, a sudden change in their academic schedule forced them to prioritise their studies over the sport.

“Zaira Forson and Kaya Forson are the only major long-distance swimmers that we have—those who have done it consistently. Certainly, it is going to affect the team, but what can we say… They are still students aside from being swimmers, so education is really paramount and they need to focus on their education.”

Alhassan further stated, “They were supposed to come until a new schedule came out for her examination (Zaira). Unfortunately, that is what has happened, so we just need to adjust to her absence and see how to manage the situation.”

Despite the setback of the Forson sisters’ absence, Ghana finds some optimism in the inclusion of the Jackson brothers, Abeiku and Kow, in the final squad for the swimming competition.

They will be joined by Unilez Takyi and Christian Nii Nortey Duah.

The swimming events for the 2023 African Games commence on March 9, 2024.

Arteta speaks about Partey’s comeback after month of injury setback

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his delight at the return of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey to action after a four-month absence due to injury.

Arteta emphasised the importance of Partey staying fit for the remainder of the season.

Partey made his comeback in Arsenal’s commanding 6-0 victory over Sheffield United in the English Premier League on Monday.

The Gunners swiftly took a three-goal lead within the first 13 minutes and added two more before halftime against the league’s bottom side.

Having been sidelined since October 2023, Partey returned to the pitch as a substitute for Jorginho in the 65th minute of the match.

He had only managed five Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season prior to this game, with his last appearance being against Manchester City in October.

In his post-match press conference, Arteta expressed gratitude for Partey’s return but stressed the importance of the midfielder continuing to work hard to maintain his fitness throughout the season.

“Today, obviously, Thomas is available now to play a certain number of minutes. He needs to build that because it was his first minute after four months, which is a long time.

“And then, like everybody, you need to have the right to earn the minutes,” he said after the game.
Thomas Partey will be eager to receive more playing time when Arsenal hosts Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

Black Stars’ Joseph Paintsil headlines MLS Team of the Week alongside Messi and Suarez

Ghanaian winger Joseph Paintsil has quickly made an impact in Major League Soccer (MLS), earning a spot in the Team of the Week after just two games with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Paintsil’s outstanding performance during Galaxy’s 3-1 victory over San Jose Earthquake in the Cali Clasico secured his place in the prestigious lineup.

He showcased his talent by scoring a goal and providing an assist, contributing significantly to Galaxy’s unbeaten start to the season after drawing 1-1 with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the opener.

Galaxy’s head coach, Greg Vanney, praised Paintsil’s exceptional display and emphasised his quality following the derby win over San Jose.

Recently joining Galaxy from KRC Genk in the Belgian league, Paintsil was named Team of the Week on the left side, alongside Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez and Messi, who occupied the central and right positions, respectively.

Suarez and Messi, former FC Barcelona teammates, played pivotal roles in Inter Miami’s dominant 5-0 triumph over Orlando City. Both players scored twice, contributing significantly to their team’s emphatic victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Aymeric Laporte both receive red cards in Asia Cup loss to Al Ain

Al-Nassr suffered a 1-0 defeat against Al-Ain in the Asian Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s team aimed to maintain their unbeaten streak in the competition, but a lacklustre performance and a display of brilliance from Soufiane Rahimi led to their downfall.

Rahimi showcased composure as he bypassed David Ospina and scored despite being off balance.

Throughout the second half, Al-Ain controlled the game, with Ronaldo’s only chance being thwarted by a remarkable save from the opposing keeper.

Aymeric Laporte’s late red card further hindered Al-Nassr’s chances.

Rahimi played a significant role for Al-Ain, contributing to both attacks that resulted in goals.

Despite having a goal disallowed for offside, he eventually found the net with a stunning run past Laporte and Ospina.

Al-Nassr’s star players, including Ronaldo and Sadio Mane, failed to shine, with Ronaldo missing several opportunities.

Laporte’s dismissal sealed Al-Nassr’s fate, as fatigue started to affect Al-Ain towards the end of the match.

Flashback: “Why call me a prostitute? Because I’m doing my job? – Nana Yaa Jantuah fumes at critics

The director of public relations and external affairs of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) Nana Yaa Jantuah has expressed her displeasure over unpleasant ‘tags’ people give her on social media.

Speaking in an interview with Morning Starr’s Kafui Dey on Starr 103.5FM, she fumed and said, “I’m not a prostitute.”

Ms. Jantuah, who has been the primary spokesperson for the PURC regarding issues related to inadequate power supply, has faced increasing public backlash.

This comes after the Commission announced increases in electricity and water tariffs, despite a worsening power crisis that has led to the implementation of load shedding measures.

“I heard people say that I am wicked; I am a prostitute. They say it on social media… [it makes me feel] bad,” she complained.

She said the constant abuse has made her contemplate resigning on several occasions but she was stopped by her boss each time.

“Maybe when the time comes, I’ll resign,” she said. “I wish I could just pick up my bag one day and say I’m gone, seriously. [I’ve given it serious thought]. Last night I was thinking about, ‘Why don’t I leave’.

“I was taught by my father [F A Jantuah, who served in the Nkrumah government] to do what is right and if I decide to take up a responsibility, I have to do it to the fullest at the time that I’m still there and when the time comes for me to leave, then I’m gone.

“Ask my boss how many times I’ve said I’m leaving. Because you see some of the things and [they] hit you: that somebody will say that you are a prostitute, and a prostitute is somebody who solicits for sex openly, and I don’t solicit for sex; I don’t do that, and you find somebody you are older than just insulting you and talking to you anyhow. I’m getting to 50, but you get somebody [as young as] 24… [talking to you anyhow]. And that’s somebody I could give birth to,” she bemoaned.

“I’ll tell you a story: I was praying in church when somebody saw me and the person said he stopped praying and was looking at me to make sure it was me. So when we finished, he walked up to me and said: ‘Is that you?’ I said: ‘Why?’ He said: ‘You pray?’ I said, ‘Yes, I’m a human being.

I pray…I’m just doing a job and I do it to the best of my ability. some people say I’m a disgrace, and some people say I’m not a good Christian, but Kafui, if you’re given a job, you do it to the best of your ability.”

  • Flashback: “They have freed the thief called Woyome!” – Rawlings fumes at prosecutors

Flashback: “They have freed the thief called Woyome!” – Rawlings fumes at prosecutors

Former president Jerry John Rawlings criticised state prosecutors for their sloppy handling of businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome’s Gh¢51.2 million judgement debt case, resulting in his acquittal and discharge.

The prolonged legal battle concluded on Thursday in an Accra High Court, with Judge John Ajet-Nassam ruling that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to implicate the prominent National Democratic Congress (NDC) financier.

Woyome left the courtroom a free man after the judge cleared him of charges related to causing financial loss to the state and defrauding by false pretence.

The judge expressed doubts about the prosecution’s case, particularly noting their failure to produce key witnesses, Betty Mould-Iddrisu and Ebo Barton Oduro, who held positions of attorney general and deputy, respectively, at the time the judgement debt was paid.

Rawlings, who described Woyome as a “thief,” is unhappy about the outcome of the case, adding that Ghanaians are “not serious” when it comes to the “fight against corruption.”.

“This is the extent of corruption I keep talking about. I just read that they have freed the thief called [Alfred] Woyome. Why, because his accomplices [Betty Mould-Iddrisu and one other] in government were not produced in court for interrogation to provide vital evidence to incriminate him,” the ex-military leader told the family of one Isaac Tetteh when they called on him at his residence to inform him about the death of their loved one.

He added: “Because his collaborators were untouched, he was also freed. The rot in government keeps aggravating. The Attorney General had let loose the collaborators so how can Woyome be prosecuted?

“We are not serious! Is that how to fight corruption? They are rather holding key positions in the party. Are we so stupid? What is wrong with our support base, can’t they observe what is going on?”

Meanwhile, Mrs Mould-Iddrisu told Starr News on the eve of Thursday’s ruling that she did nothing untoward in the payment of the judgement debt to Mr Woyome.

  • PPA officials approve ‘any’ sole sourcing contract requests over fear of job dismissal – PAC chairman

PPA officials approve ‘any’ sole sourcing contract requests over fear of job dismissal – PAC chairman

Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, James Klutse Avedzi, disclosed that officials at the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) feel pressured to approve sole sourcing contract requests, even if they don’t meet the necessary criteria, due to fear of dismissal.

According to Avedzi, nearly all of these requests from state institutions, about 99.9%, are granted because of the influential figures in government backing such contracts.

Speaking to EIB Network’s Parliamentary Affairs Correspondent Ibrahim Alhassan, Avedzi highlighted that many of the infractions outlined in the Auditor General’s Reports revolve around procurement, despite the existence of laws governing the process.

He further explained that PPA officials often feel compelled to approve these irregular requests, fearing job loss if they refuse the powerful individuals behind them.

“What they do is to write to the Procurement Authority for approval and I can tell you that if you take a 100% of requests to the Public Procurement Authority, about 99.9% are approved.”

Mr. Avedzi pointed out that despite President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and key members of the NPP expressing strong disapproval of sole sourcing, the practice has become prevalent.

“It is happening now more than before. The challenge that the workers or those people who are working at the Public Procurement Authority have is that, if there is a pressure from high authority, I want you to approve this request. So you choose between your job security and approval of that.”.

“The request will not be met because there are conditions under which you can do sole sourcing. Those conditions are not met by that request and if I don’t do it maybe I will be sacked, Maybe the one who put me there is asking me to do it, if I deny him this, what will happen? My job is at stake.

According to him, the other challenge with the fight against corruption is the poor working conditions of the staff of the PPA. According to Mr. Avedzi the development makes it difficult for the authority to exercise its mandate to ensure a better procurement process.

The PAC chairman related to a staff member of the PPA whose terms of engagement were varied to her disadvantage.

“The other one is the condition of service of those working at the regulatory body. There was an issue where somebody was engaged as a lawyer on contract and she was being paid around GhC4,000.00, which is also not enough, but she was managing with that and when her condition of employment was regularised, she’s now been put on government payroll. Approval had been given by the Public Services Commission and the salary came down to about GhC2,000.00, to her disadvantage. So the board of PPA had to decide what to do. They decided to top up her salary by GhC2,000.00 to still maintain the GhC4,000.00.

The auditors cited that difference and when I looked at it I said, looking at the condition under which this thing happened, I don’t think we should push it too much. So if the condition of service of the people who are working there is so bad, what do you think they will do? They are human beings, and they will be tempted to receive some packages to make them survive, so that they can take care of their family. So these two things are making it to the extent that procurement issues are becoming alarming. So how do we resolve this?”

Mr. Avedzi called for better conditions of service for the staff of PPA. This, according to him, will help address their susceptibility to corruption.

“That regulatory body must be well paid so that there will be no temptation to receive anything. It will not completely rule it out but it can cut it down to a large extent. Once I’m paid well and you want to offer me a bribe or something so that I can approve something that I know is wrong, my conscience will tell me that ‘hey look why do you want to do this?’ So let’s pay them well.”

The lawmaker also called on government officials and leading members of the governing party to refrain from putting pressure on PPA to approve sole sourcing requests which do not meet the requirements of the Act.

“To those of us who are putting pressure on them to approve something that we know is wrong because we are doing it for our own benefit must be committed to say that ‘I will not do that’ . Once we do that, we solve the problem.

Mr. Avedzi expressed frustration over the failure to act on the recommendations of the Public Accounts Committee regarding breaches identified in the Auditor General’s reports.

“The third one is that those people who are found liable must be punished and this Public Accounts Committee has cited and referred a number of people. The prominent among them is the sole sourcing which was done by Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company. I referred this to the Attorney General for prosecution but as we sit here no prosecution has started,” Mr. Avedzi stated.

Gareth Taylor poised for contract extension as he drives Man City’s WSL title bid

A report by Kathryn Batte in the Daily Mail shows that Taylor is on the verge of signing a new long-term contract until the end of the 2026–27 season.

City is reportedly satisfied with the progress made under the 51-year-old manager this season and is eager to secure his services with a new deal sooner rather than later.

Taylor faced scrutiny last season after City finished outside the top three in the WSL for the first time since their debut top-flight season in 2014, following significant player turnover in the summer of 2022.

Despite this, he was granted a new one-year deal for the 2023–24 season.

The club’s patience has paid off, with City currently trailing only behind Chelsea in the WSL table due to a slightly inferior goal difference.

Taylor’s team has impressively won their last 12 consecutive games across all competitions.

In addition to challenging Chelsea for the WSL title, City are set to face them in the Conti Cup semi-finals this Thursday, having recently defeated them in the league.

Following this, they will take on Tottenham in an FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday. With their current form, there’s a strong possibility that City could secure a domestic treble by the end of the 2023–24 season.

Neymar hints at a possible reunion with ‘good friend’ Messi at Inter Miami

Brazil forward Neymar said on Saturday that he would like to play again with Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi in the future.

The two are good friends and played together at both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, but they will not face off in this summer’s Copa América after the Brazil international suffered a knee injury last October.

Since signing Messi in the summer of 2023, Miami has added his former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suárez to the squad.

Asked about Messi bringing his friends to Inter Miami and if he would like to play with him again, Neymar told ESPN Argentina: “Hopefully we can play together again.

Leo is a great person, everyone knows him in football and I think he is very happy and if he is happy, I am too.” The Al Hilal forward, who is not expected to return to action until August, attended the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix on Saturday.

Neymar and Messi achieved league titles during their tenure at PSG but fell short of securing Champions League glory for the club. The 32-year-old Neymar has described their time together at PSG as tumultuous, stating that they “endured hell.”

Both players departed the club in 2023, with Messi moving to Major League Soccer (MLS) and Neymar signing a two-year deal with Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

Neymar, Brazil’s highest-scoring player of all time, had previously shown interest in playing in the MLS while still at PSG.

Asked last year if he would like to retire in Brazil, Neymar, 30, said on the Fenômenos podcast: “I don’t know. I have some doubts about that. I don’t know if I’ll play in Brazil again.

“I’d love to play in the U.S., actually. I’d love to play there, at least for a season.”

PSG president, ‘pained’ by Mbappe’s departure, calls it a betrayal – Reports

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi views Kylian Mbappé’s impending departure this summer as a betrayal.

The 25-year-old forward has informed the club of his desire to leave on a free transfer and is currently in discussions with Real Madrid.

Sources revealed to ESPN that, despite potentially forgoing bonuses amounting to around €100 million by leaving on a free transfer, Mbappé sees no issue with his decision.

However, Al-Khelaïfi is dissatisfied with the situation, and recent events within the club indicate underlying tensions.

Mbappé was substituted at halftime during Friday’s 0-0 draw with Monaco, following a similar substitution in PSG’s previous draw with Rennes the week before.

In an attempt to address the growing tension surrounding these substitutions, the French forward met with PSG manager Luis Enrique at the club’s training center on Saturday, as reported by sources to ESPN.

Barcelona duo, De Jong and Pedri to be sidelined for weeks following injury during Athletic clash

Barcelona’s medical team conducted tests on Frenkie de Jong and Pedri Gonzalez on Monday morning, following their injuries during the La Liga match against Athletic at San Mamés.

The results revealed that de Jong has a sprained external lateral ligament in his right ankle, while Pedri has an injury to the rectus femoris in his right thigh.

Both players underwent examinations shortly after arriving at the ‘Cules’ training complex.

“De Jong suffers a sprain in the external lateral ligament of the right ankle” and “Pedri has an injury to the rectus femoris of the right thigh” are the words used by the Catalan giants in their statement, published on their social networks.

It is also added that “both are out and their recovery will determine their availability,” so there is no specific or official deadline for Xavi Hernandez to call them up again.

Despite this, it’s been acknowledged that the Dutch player will likely be sidelined for approximately a month. However, precise estimations are challenging due to the lack of specific details provided by the ‘Cule’ club regarding the severity of his sprain.

What’s clear is that he won’t be participating in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Napoli.

Similarly, caution must be exercised with his teammate, who has a history of multiple injuries this season. Remarkably, this marks his eighth injury within a span of two and a half years.

Mbappé suspects PSG of leaking news of his exit to the media – Reports

PSG and Kylian Mbappé relationship is getting worse as the season continues in its latest months. Mbappé seems more relaxed and unbothered after the news broke of his announcing his departure from PSG to his teammates at the French club.

The relationship between PSG coach Luis Enrique and Mbappé seems to be dissolving while the season continues at a crucial time for the team.

Foot Mercato reports that the relationship between Kylian Mbappé and Luis Enrique has completely broken down. PSG sources even claim that the two men “can no longer stand each other in private.”

Luis Enrique subbed off Mbappé for two games in a row and hinted that Mbappé will no longer be with PSG in the near future. Enrique said, “I have been in football for quite a long time; you must know that everything is important in this kind of club. Sooner or later, we will play without Mbappé; we have to get used to that.”

According to L’Equipe, Kylian Mbappé suspects PSG of leaking his departure to the media prematurely, as it deviates from the agreed timeline between the player and the club. Mbappé feels betrayed, believing PSG has reneged on their agreement and acted deceitfully.

Nevertheless, despite the alleged breach of trust, the French football star remains determined to proceed with negotiations with Real Madrid.

It appears likely that Mbappé will join the Spanish giants, with his contract with PSG expiring this summer, facilitating a move to Madrid on a free transfer. Additionally, it’s reported that Mbappé will receive bonuses from Real Madrid as part of the deal.

PSG fans are not happy with Mbappé at the PSG stadium

Outside the PSG stadium, fans are displaying signs of frustration towards Kylian Mbappé following the announcement of his imminent departure from the club.

They express their disappointment at his apparent lack of concern about not playing for PSG anymore. Banners held up by PSG supporters outside the stadium convey their sentiments: “Kylian Mbappé: I can’t wait for June 30!”—the date his contract expires.

Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, orchestrated a special reception at the Flagstaff House on Sunday, March 3, 2024, to honour officials of the Black Queens.

Leading the Black Queens officials was Dr. Gifty Oware-Mensah, Chairperson of the Management Committee and Executive Council Member. Also in attendance were Nora Häuptle, head coach of the Black Queens, and team manager Hannah Asare.

Representing the Chief of Staff were Hon. Freda Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Tano North, and Jamaldeen Alhassan, Personal Assistant to the Minister of Youth and Sports.

The reception followed the return of the Black Queens to Ghana on Friday, March 1, 2024, after their determined performance in the Olympic Games third-round qualifiers against Zambia.

Despite a 3-3 draw in Ndola on Wednesday, Ghana missed out on advancing to the fourth and final round of qualifiers after a 1-0 loss to the Copper Queens in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium.

During the reception, the Chief of Staff commended the team’s efforts and encouraged them to continue striving for success during the rebuilding phase.

She also acknowledged the team’s dedication with an undisclosed financial commitment and pledged to provide further support as they prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Additionally, the Chief of Staff reiterated her commitment to the development of women’s football and the national women’s teams.

Ghana boasts four registered women’s national teams under the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA: the Black Damsels, the Black Maidens, the Black Princesses, and the Black Queens.

The national U-20 team, known as the Black Princesses, will compete in the women’s football event at the 13th African Games in Accra in 2024.
