On Friday, the jail term for a fan, Alex Agelopoulos, who struckMelbourne City keeper Tom Glover in the face with a metal bucket during a pitch invasion last year, was overturned.
Initially sentenced to three months in jail with a community corrections order in August, Agelopoulos appealed the decision in the Victorian County Court.
His lawyer argued that it was unfair for him to be the only pitch-invader receiving a jail term.
The judge nullified the 24-year-old’s jail sentence, instead imposing a three-and-a-half-year community corrections order with 350 hours of unpaid work.

Despite the change in sentencing, Agelopoulos remains banned from attending all football matches for five years.
The incident occurred during an A-League match on December 17, 2022, when Victory fans invaded the pitch at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Glover suffered a facial injury, a suspected concussion, and required stitches.
The women’s World Cup champions, Spain, have attained the top spot in theFIFA rankings for the first time, surpassing the second-placed United States, as announced by the world governing body on Friday.
This achievement makes Spain the fourth team to reach the summit of the rankings, following the U.S., Germany, and Sweden.
Spain secured their ascent to the top after winning the World Cup final against England in August, moving up four spots to second. Their remarkable performances in the Women’s Nations League solidified their position.
Having topped their group with five wins, including victories over Sweden, Spain qualified for the Nations League Finals in February, where they will face the Netherlands in the semifinals.
The USWNT rose to second place in the rankings, with France in third. Both the U.S. and France also qualified for the Nations League Finals, facing Germany and each other in the semifinals, respectively.
European champions England are in fourth place, while Sweden dropped to fifth after finishing third in their Nations League group.
The stakeholders aim to boost the consumption of Ghana’s music by the diaspora, which will visit Ghana for various events in December, dubbed Detty December.
Speaking at the campaign launch, the Director of the Creative Arts Agency, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, stated that almost every sector of the economy blossoms during Christmas but music seems to be left behind.
She expressed optimism that the campaign would greatly boost the awareness of Ghanaian music. Black Sherif, a popular Ghanaian rapper, was at the event to support the initiative.
He stated that the initiative was a step in the right direction for Ghanaian music and culture and urged everyone to support it. Samini Dagaati, a popular dancehall artiste, also commended the organisers of the campaign.
In his speech, he observed that foreign music has taken over the Apple Music Top 100 Ghana Chart because listeners have been “indoctrinated” to listen to such songs. My Own Hitmaker said this initiative must be strategic and deliberate to push Ghana music.
Kendry Paez is set to travel to England next week to commence training withChelsea as part of his transition to the club, according to reports from the Daily Telegraph.
Chelsea had previously agreed to sign the promising Ecuador international from Independiente del Valle for £17.27 million earlier this year.
The 16-year-old midfielder, recognised as one of the brightest talents in South America, will officially join Chelsea upon turning 18 in May 2025.
Having made his full debut for Ecuador in September, Paez showcased his skills by providing the assist for the winning goal in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.
Paez played a pivotal role for Ecuador in this year’s South American Under-17 Championship, scoring two goals as they finished as runners-up to Brazil.
On Thursday, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced that its disciplinary board had imposed a permanent ban on Ankaragucu club president Faruk Koca for assaulting a referee following a game in the country’s top soccer league earlier in the week.
In response to the incident involving fans and club officials during Monday’s match against Rizespor, the TFF board also decreed that Ankaragucu, a top-tier Super Lig club in Turkey, would face a two million lira ($69,000) fine and play five home games without fans.
Several other Ankaragucu officials received bans, cautions, and fines in connection with the altercation.
After Rizespor scored a 97th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw, Koca entered the pitch and punched referee Halil Umut Meler in the face. Subsequently, Meler was kicked while lying on the ground.
Koca was arrested the following day, prompting the soccer federation to immediately suspend all matches. It has now been decided that games will resume next Tuesday after a one-week suspension.
While Meler was released from an Ankara hospital on Wednesday with a swollen and darkened eye, he reportedly has no other health issues.
Debates about the credibility and transparency of the lithium mining lease agreement signed by the government with Australian company Barari DV Ghana Ltd., a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Ltd., for the exploitation of lithium in the Ewoyaa area for a period of 15 years still wage on.
Former PNC General Secretary, Atik Mohammed, has added his voice to the ditch of the deal as it lacks transparency.
Speaking on Kwame Sefa Kaye’s Kokrokoo morning show on Peace FM, Atik questioned the credibility of the deal after presenting the same two letters of approval of recommendations signed by the land minister bearing different dates and also a mining lease that was signed on the same day, a situation he deems highly impractical.
He said, “We are not against the lithium mining lease for it is the future, but in its current form, we should trash it. This is an unacceptable lease that has to be rejected.”.
As mandated by the constitution, according to Article 703, Atik detailed that an entity that seeks to engage in such mining activities is expected to secure a letter of approval or recommendation from the lands minister after it has been approved by the minerals commission, after which the entity is expected to respond and make some payments after acceptance.
But in this case, everything appears to have happened on the same day, evidently from the date on the mining lease and the minister’s approval letter.
He said, “If you look at the approval for the recommendation letter signed by the lands minister, it bears the same date as the mining lease was signed, and it is not practicable. Unless there’s someone somewhere who will say I’m doing everything for you, you go and sort the rest out, which is quite unpracticable
“After they realised how they had rushed the whole process and how it would attract some suspicion, they backdated the date, which shows a lack of transparency, and from this we conclude that there are a lot of questions to ask
“These two letters bear different dates. It tells you that something is amiss. It is not possible because you cannot give a mining lease and get approval of a recommendation letter on the same day.
What does Article 703 of the 1992 Constitution say?
Except otherwise provided in this Act, a person shall not export, sell or otherwise dispose of a mineral unless the person holds a licence granted by the Minister for that purpose. (2) An application for a licence shall be made in writing to the Minister in the prescribed manner.
Bayern Munich is set to revive their interest in Fulham midfielder João Palhinha during the January transfer window, as reported by journalist Rudy Galetti.
Palhinha was on the verge of joining the German club in the summer, but the deal reportedly fell through at the last minute due to Fulham’s inability to secure a replacement.
Despite the setback, Fulham swiftly extended the 28-year-old’s contract. Bayern, however, is now contemplating a renewed attempt.
Liverpool, initially strong contenders for Palhinha, seem to have cooled their interest, opening the door for Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea to join the pursuit.
Nevertheless, Palhinha’s rising valuation could pose a challenge for both English clubs, potentially making it more feasible for Bayern to secure the transfer they sought six months ago.
Palhinha, under contract until 2028 and showcasing good form at Craven Cottage, has scored two goals in 13 league appearances this season.
While the Portugal international remains keen on a move to the Bundesliga,Bayern may need to make a substantial offer to secure his services.
Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has reportedly submitted a provisional 50-man squad list to the Ghana Football Association for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to reports from Angel TV, Hughton’s submission aligns with tournament rules, which require countries to present their provisional lists by December 14.
While the provisional list includes 50 players, the final and official 23-man squad for the AFCON must be announced by January 3, 2024.
In anticipation of the squad announcement, certain names have gained widespread attention in the media, with the call for the inclusion of specific players intensifying.
After an impressive performance in the Super Clash on Sunday, December 10, 2023, Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey has been highlighted as a player deserving a place in the squad.
Former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko midfielder Charles Taylor has voiced his support for the inclusion of Richmond Lamptey and Hearts’ Salifu Ibrahim, emphasising their demonstrated quality.
Taylor believes that these two players should be added to the Ghana squad for the AFCON based on their impressive performances.
“If we don’t see these two [Salifu and Lamptey] in the Black Stars squad, then we need to question Chris Hughton. The two players have shown talent and quality and deserve a place on our national team, he said.
The Black Stars,a four-time African champion, are poised to encounter strong competition in Group B during the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted in Cote d’Ivoire.
“In a formidable draw, the West African powerhouse will face off against Egypt, with an impressive seven-time championship record, along with Cape Verde and Mozambique.

Renowned Ghanaian media personality Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, criticised gospel artisteSonnie Badu for publicly accusing Dr. Kweku Oteng, the CEO of Angel Group of Companies.
Vim Lady, in a Facebook post on December 13, expressed disapproval of Sonnie Badu’s decision to bring the matter into the public domain.
She emphasised the importance of building and maintaining positive relationships with brands, asserting that Sonnie Badu’s public disclosure of the issue with Dr. Kweku Oteng could potentially impact his chances of securing sponsorships from other companies in the future.
“This guy paaa! This is an issue you don’t even speak about publicly. You build on the relationship for future sponsorship opportunities.
“This matter that you have put on blast, letting the ‘cat out of the bag’: which company will feel comfortable associating with you and sponsoring you in the future? Sometimes we for gbordgidi small on some information,” she said.
Vim Lady underscored the importance of a strategic approach in securing sponsorships from brands. She pointed out that sponsorships are not handed out “on a silver platter” and emphasised that brands typically require data showcasing the value they can derive in terms of brand exposure and potential sales.
This strategic perspective, according to Vim Lady, is vital for artists like Sonnie Badu seeking support from brands in their endeavours.

Electoral Commission (EC) has announced plans to enhance transparency in the 2024 General Election by displaying results from various polling stations on a dedicated online platform.
Mrs. Jane Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, revealed this initiative during a stakeholder meeting organized by the National Peace Council at Peduase in the Eastern Region.
The meeting aimed to assess events after the 2020 General election and prepare for the upcoming 2024 General Election.
As part of this transparency effort, the EC intends to publish scanned, signed pink sheets on the online portal, providing the public with real-time access to polling station results.
Mrs. Mensa emphasised that this decision is geared towards fostering inclusion and actively involving citizens in the electoral process.
“We intend to display the results from the polling station on a dedicated portal. This proposal aligns with the EU Observer Mission recommendation. For the first time in our history, we posted results from the 16 Regions and 275 constituencies in real time.
“This time around, we plan to display the scanned, signed pink sheets on a dedicated portal. We are confident that this arrangement will promote transparency and engender further trust and confidence in our electoral processes,” she said.
EC to close polls at 3pm
The Electoral Commission (EC) has put forward a proposal to conclude polling activities by 15:00 hours in an effort to facilitate the counting process in broad daylight, thus contributing to increased transparency.
This decision is based on observations from the 2020 Election, where approximately 70 percent of polling centres were reportedly vacant by 13:00 hours.
The EC attributed this trend to the establishment of multiple polling centres, which expedited the voting process.
Mrs. Jane Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, outlined the intention to create numerous polling centres with each having no more than 500 voters to streamline the voting duration.
This strategy, implemented in the last election, resulted in voters spending no more than five minutes casting their votes due to the increased number of voting centres. The overarching goal is to enhance efficiency and transparency in the electoral process.
“We are convinced that closing the polls at 3pm will enable counting and collating to take place in broad daylight and promote the needed transparency and orderliness we so desire.
“We trust that our Parliament will support this drive to ensure greater transparency and orderliness in our electoral process,” Mrs Mensa said.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has suggested the implementation of a year-round exhibition exercise that would allow citizens to verify their registration details using smartphones and other mobile devices.
Mrs. Jane Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, expressed optimism that Parliament would approve the new Constitutional Instrument advocating for a continuous voter registration exercise.
This proposal aims to designate the Ghana Card as the sole identification document to establish an applicant’s citizenship, with the objective of phasing out the guarantor system.
The guarantor system has faced challenges and compromised the credibility of the voter register.
Mrs. Mensa highlighted the importance of this initiative in addressing existing issues and enhancing the reliability of the electoral process.
Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, affirmed the Council’s commitment to engaging in continuous dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful election in 2024.
He specifically appealed to the National Democratic Congress to rejoin the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to facilitate consensus-building and collaborative efforts in the electoral process.
“If we all commit to peace Ghana will have one of the best elections in Africa,” he said.
Ms Kathleen Addy, Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), said the 2024 Election was peculiar in the wake of political instability in the West Africa Sub-region.
“We are more vulnerable than before. We must work with each other and assure each other so that we can arrive at the elections and beyond the elections in peace and intact,” she said.
Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, Dr. Alidu Seidu, has suggested that John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), should consider selecting an Akan as his running mate for the 2024 election.
Dr. Seidu emphasised the importance of this suggestion, citing the significant influence of Akan votes and their potential contribution to the NDC’s success in the 2024 election.
During an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, December 14, Dr. Seidu highlighted that while the Volta region, Oti region, and the five northern regions traditionally support the NDC, relying solely on these areas might pose challenges in securing victory in the upcoming election
“So, I think a lot of people are calling for him to look beyond the Volta region and go to maybe an Akan-dominated region. The running mate should be an Akan, either from the Ashanti region or any of the Akan-speaking regions,” he told Evans Mensah.
Dr. Alidu Seidu, Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to carefully consider a running mate for John Dramani Mahama, who could seamlessly assume leadership after Mr. Mahama’s potential one-term tenure if he secures victory in the upcoming 2024 election.
Dr. Seidu’s remarks come amid growing pressure on Mr. Mahama to announce his choice for a running mate. This pressure has intensified, with traditional leaders in the Bono and Western North regions expressing their preferences during Mr. Mahama’s recent campaign tour.
Similarly, youth groups in the Volta and Oti regions, NDC strongholds, are urging the former President to select a running mate from their regions.
Dr. Seidu explained that the lobbying by traditional rulers may stem from the expectation that their respective regions would benefit significantly in terms of development.
Additionally, he noted that individuals being lobbied may find it appropriate to engage with traditional leaders due to the influence and respect they command.
In response to the growing anticipation, Mr. Mahama has stated that the chosen candidate for the running mate position will be announced in February 2024.
“I don’t choose a running mate alone. Myself, together with the Functional Executive Committee and Council of Elders, pick from a list and decide on one person,” he pointed out.
He urged those appealing for their preferred candidates to exercise restraint.
“I would pray for your patience, as we all know that God grants the King and the NDC doesn’t discriminate.”
Mr Mahama was partnered by Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang in the 2020 election, and there are suggestions she may be retained, although others want to see a new face.
Clubs in England and Saudi Arabia have driven spending on player agents in international transfer deals to a record-breaking $888 million this year, according to FIFA.
The governing body highlighted instances of service fees exceeding $10 million, acknowledging that despite its efforts to regulate agent payments, there are challenges.
FIFA recently faced a setback in a London court ruling that jeopardises its global regulations. Agents in Europe have contested the rules through legal actions, leading to a delay in their implementation, and England continues to dominate the multi-billion-dollar player transfer market, as per FIFA’s latest research.
FIFA said English clubs were “the number one spenders by a long shot” in 2023, with combined spending of more than $280 million on agent commissions in transfers between two clubs in different countries. Money from player transfers between two clubs in the same country does not count in the FIFA numbers.
The total expenditure on agents witnessed a 42% increase in 2022, surpassing the previous peak of $654 million in 2019 by more than one-third.
Italian clubs led the way, with a collective spending of $115.7 million.
Notably, Saudi Arabian clubs, backed by a state-sponsored recruitment initiative, spent $86 million on agents, aiming to enhance their domestic league with high-profile signings like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema.
FIFA highlighted 224 cases where the agent service fee exceeded $1 million, constituting almost 69% of the total expenditure. In the majority of deals, agents received fees ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.
Clubs in North and Central America spent $5.4 million across 20 transfers, while African clubs spent less than $200,000, according to FIFA.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been exonerated from a charge by the Football Association (FA) in relation to comments he made after the team’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United last month.
Arteta expressed his frustration over the decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s goal, despite three VAR checks for potential infractions such as the ball going out of play, a foul, and an offside in the build-up.
Speaking immediately after the match, Arteta said, “It’s a disgrace. It’s embarrassing. That’s how I feel and that’s how everybody feels in that [dressing] room. You cannot imagine the amount of messages we’ve got saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing. I’m sorry, it’s embarrassing.
Mikel Arteta has avoided a ban for his comments in the aftermath of Arsenal’s defeat to Newcastle United. Getty “I feel sick. That’s how I feel. I feel sick to be part of this. It is not good enough and we cannot accept that.”
Mikel Arteta, charged by the Football Association (FA) under Rule E3.1 for alleged misconduct related to insulting comments towards match officials and actions detrimental to the game, has been found “not proven” by an independent commission. The decision came after an investigation that involved Arteta attending a personal hearing
In the written reasons accompanying the decision, Arteta is described as an “impressive witness” who successfully argued his comments focused on a wider frustration with the VAR process rather than targeting a match official.
It read, “[In the post-match interviews], MA expressed his frustration at the VAR decision and the standard of refereeing and VAR decision-making in the Premier League.
“He did not descend into language which insulted or cast aspersions about particular officials, nor to language which reflected anything other than his reasonably held view, supported by others, that VAR decision-making and officiating standards require improvement.’”
Former Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock, now with Newcastle, reportedly informed his ex-teammates that he thought the ball had exited play in the lead-up to Anthony Gordon’s goal. Additionally, it is disclosed that Arteta’s use of the term “disgrace” in Spanish carried a different connotation
“The word ‘disgrace’ used by MA in the Interviews ‘has a very similar spelling and pronunciation to the Spanish ‘desgracia’ … the Spanish word has connotations of misfortune, tragedy or bad luck rather than the connotations of the English equivalent, which suggest contempt, dishonour or disrespect,” continued the written reasons.
“While the English meaning may lead to interpretations of abuse or insult, this was not the intended meaning of the comments.”
Arteta was also said to have made “considerable efforts that he has made in the past [and continues to make] to work with other stakeholders [including the PGMOL and the Chief Refereeing Officer] in the pursuit of improving the standards of match officiating [including VAR officiating] in the Premier League” and that he had “frustration that such efforts [on his part and by others] had ‘failed to produce any meaningful improvements’ in those standards.”
Following Manchester United’s elimination from European competition this season, the club is anticipating multiple departures from Erik ten Hag’s first-team squad in the upcoming January transfer window, as per sources informed by ESPN.
United’s exit from the Champions League, sealed with a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, confirmed their bottom-place finish in Group A and ruled them out of the Europa League contention.
With no European football in the new year and only the Premier League and FA Cup to focus on, sources indicate that Ten Hag is willing to streamline his squad.
Jadon Sancho is expected to depart, having not played since August following a public dispute with Ten Hag.
While the Dutchman hinted at a potential return for Sancho if he apologises, sources suggest it’s highly likely the England forward will leave in January if a suitable offer is received.
Midfielder Donny van de Beek, who has only played twice this season, is also available for transfer. There is reported interest from Spain and Germany, and while United prefers a permanent deal, they are open to loan offers.
Discussions are slated to occur with Tottenham regarding Sergio Reguilón, who joined Manchester United on loan on deadline day. The loan agreement contains a break clause, enabling Reguilón to return to Spurs in January. However, United is keen on assessing the severity of Luke Shaw’s hamstring injury suffered against Bayern before making any decisions.
Second-choice left-back Tyrell Malacia has faced setbacks in recovering from a knee injury and is not anticipated to return until the new year.
United, according to a source, is open to offers for Anthony Martial, whose contract expires in the summer. The club is also anticipating interest in Raphaël Varane and Casemiro, contingent on whether the players express a desire to leave. Varane recently made his first start in over a month against Bayern.
With Financial Fair Play concerns, offloading players in January would alleviate pressure ahead of the next transfer window. The reduced number of games in the second half of the campaign may limit first-team opportunities for young players Hannibal, Amad, and Facundo Pellistri.
Though Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% investment is yet to be officially confirmed, a source mentioned to ESPN that it’s “business as usual” in preparation for the January window. There remains optimism that Ratcliffe’s investment could be announced before Christmas, despite delays.
Manchester City and Real Madrid have reportedly been put on alert as contract negotiations between Alphonso Davies and Bayern Munich have hit an impasse, as per Sky Sport Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg.
The 23-year-old defender’s current deal runs until 2025, but Bayern’s offer falls short of Davies’ expectations, seeking a salary between €10 and €13 million per season.
Real Madrid has expressed serious interest in acquiring Davies and has initiated contact with his agents to explore the possibility of a deal.
The Canadian captain, who has contributed to five Bundesliga titles, including the 2020 treble, desires compensation on par with the club’s top earners.
However, Bayern remains uncertain about elevating his pay to that level.
Manchester City, who have previously shown interest in Davies, are likely to monitor the situation closely as the contract negotiations unfold.
Chelsea is reportedly gearing up for another squad overhaul, contemplating “tough decisions” in an effort to address the balance of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Despite recently undergoing significant squad restructuring under new ownership, the club is set to offload multiple players next month while also eyeing new signings, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider.
The report does not mention specific names, but players like Ian Maatsen, Trevoh Chalobah, and possibly Conor Gallagher could face uncertainties, potentially representing lucrative sales for the club.
Chelsea expanded away dressing room after complain
A well-placed source has indicated that challenging choices lie ahead for Chelsea in the new year as they navigate the complexities of squad management and player recruitment.
Ghana has witnessed a continued decline in its inflation rate for the fourth consecutive month, reaching 26.4% in November.
This marks a notable 8.8-percentage-point decrease from the 35.2% recorded in October 2023.
The month-on-month reduction of 8.8% stands as the most significant drop in the past 13 months in the country, primarily attributed to a decrease in food inflation.
Notably, items such as fish, other seafood, water, and soft drinks experienced deflation during this period.
According to the recently released Consumer Price Index (CPI) data on December 14, year-on-year food inflation was reported at 32.2%, while non-food inflation stood at 21.7%.
Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the Government Statistician, emphasised the regional disparities in inflation rates, pointing out that the national inflation rate’s 19-month low was influenced by base-effect comparisons.
Breaking down the regional data, the Western region recorded the highest inflation rate at 39.8%, while the Greater Accra region registered the lowest inflation rate at 19.8%.
The overall trend suggests positive economic development with a significant decline in inflation rates, particularly in the food sector, contributing to the nation’s economic stability.
Since 2022, Ghana has grappled with persistently high inflation, primarily attributed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the devaluation of the cedi, rising fuel costs, and supply shocks in the agricultural sector.
Ghana experienced a peak in its inflation rate, reaching an alarming 53.6% in January 2023, positioning it as the second-highest in Africa, following Zimbabwe.
Throughout the majority of 2023, Ghana’s inflation rate consistently hovered above 40%, reflecting the economic challenges it faced.
However, there was a noteworthy shift in August 2023, when the inflation rate began to decline.
This change marked a significant turning point, indicating potential improvements in the economic landscape and efforts to address the factors contributing to high inflation.
Former Minister of Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, has strongly criticised the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for donating 200 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service.
On Monday, December 11, 2023, ECG donated these bikes to the Ghana Police Service as part of ECG’s initiative to enhance police operations nationwide.
Pru East MP and Member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, condemned the gesture, deeming it highly irresponsible on the part of ECG given the company’s indebtedness to Independent Power Producers.
On his part, ECG ‘has no business’ taking on the government’s responsibility of providing logistics to the power producers.
“I read with shock on Tuesday that the Electricity Company of Ghana had donated 200 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service. Ordinarily, any such donation would have attracted my approval.
“But with this particular one, ECG has no business taking over the responsibility of the state to provide logistics for the Ghana Police. ECG is in debt for billions of cedis,” he fumed.
He went on to lambast ECG over its indebtedness to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and urged the Ministers of Energy and State Enterprises to investigate the “irresponsible” act of ECG for appropriate action.
“Indeed, 2 weeks ago, the Minister of Finance had to intervene to stop Sonon Asorgli from shutting down because of ECG’s indebtedness to IPPs.
For an entity that cannot pay its indebtedness, they have no business buying motors for the Ghana Police.
“ I call on the Ministers of Energy and State Enterprises to call the ECG management to book.”
ECG, the country’s main power utility, buys electricity from various generation companies, including Independent Power Producers (IPPs), and distributes it to consumers.
However, the ECG has been unable to pay for the full amount of power it purchases from the IPPs, resulting in a huge debt of about $1.4 billion as of last month.
Meanwhile,in July this year, Independent Power Producers threatened a power cut to the national grid if the government did not pay at least 30% of the outstanding debt—a move that was expected to cause a major national crisis or even re-introduce the country to ‘dumsor’ but for the intervention of the finance minister.
This debt has affected the operations and sustainability of the IPPs, who control 50% of the country’s generation mix
They have also rejected any proposal to restructure the debt, saying that they need to repay their lenders and suppliers
The government and the ECG have been trying to address the debt issue and prevent power cuts by implementing various measures such as the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, the Energy Sector Recovery Programme, and the Energy Sector Levy Act.
NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi has lambasted the government over its ‘celebration’ of the “10% royalty” under the controversiallithium deal.
His remarks come after the government signed a deal with Barari DV Ghana Ltd., a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Ltd. for the exploitation of lithium in the Ewoyaa area of the Central Region for a period of 15 years, starting next year, 2024.
Amid the fierce resistance the government has faced over the transparency of the deal, among others, the government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources have defended the deal, saying that it is one of the best in the world as it stands to offer an unprecedented 10% royalty and 19% state participation in the mining company.
However, Sammy Gyamfi, in a statement explaining the deal and at the same time expressing his disapproval of it, labelled the government’s pride in the’meager’ ‘ benefit as a “celebration of mediocrity.
“Beyond that, strict provisions on tax compliance and enforcement are required to ensure that the state is not cheated through transfer pricing and creative accounting. It is important to make the point that the government’s boastful claim about securing a 10% royalty under the deal is a celebration of mediocrity,” the statement said.
The NDC argues that, despite the government’s assertion that Barari DV will be subject to a 35% corporate tax rate, there is a crucial need for clarity regarding the company’s status and a comprehensive disclosure of concessions granted.
According to the NDC, the Mining Lease stipulates that Barari DV should pay taxes in adherence to Ghana’s mining laws, creating room for ambiguity and speculation.
The NDC’s concerns centre around the need for transparency and accountability in the lithium deal, urging the government to provide clear and unambiguous information to address uncertainties and ensure public trust in the agreement.
“It is therefore imperative for government to clarify the status and tax obligations of Barari DV and its parent company. Ghanaians deserve to know whether or not the company is a free zone company and why a mining company should be accorded free zone status.
“Ghanaians deserve to know all the concessions the government is giving the company (Barari DV/Atlantic Lithium) for a holistic assessment of the benefits of the deal.
“What the Mining Lease expressly provides is that Barari DV shall pay taxes in accordance with the mining laws of Ghana, without more. We are, however, told that the company is registered under theGhana Free Zones Authority and is entitled to a 10-year tax holiday, when such tax concessions are ordinarily not granted to mining companies in the country. This, if true, will deprive the country of corporate taxes during the first ten years of the Ewoyaa Lithium Project.

Alisha Lehmann, the standoutplayer from Aston Villa, has collaborated with Arsenal legend Lukas Podolski and German football great Mats Hummels for a joint project.
The 24-year-old Swiss international has officially announced her participation in the upcoming indoor football competition named ‘Baller League,’ scheduled for January 2024.
Lehmann is set to join a diverse lineup in the league, featuring former players, celebrities, musicians, streamers, and influencers. Open to participants from all walks of life, the ‘Baller League’ promises to be an inclusive event.
The confirmation of Lehmann’s involvement sparked an interaction between her and Podolski on their respective Instagram stories, conducted in German.
Lehmann has told Bild of adding her name to the guest list: “I’m really looking forward to the Baller League. This is a great idea that combines a lot of things from today: pure football, entertainment and then making the whole thing accessible to fans via social media—for a generation that sees itself in all of these points.
“I think the Baller League is very attractive. I grew up with street football and always watched indoor football. During the winter break, it was a real experience that I was looking forward to.
“The idea of offering this football a stage and bringing it back to the field with honest rules and lots and lots of fun—I wanted to be part of that. That’s also my style, my understanding of football and my DNA.”
The ‘Baller League’ – which is being pieced together byWorld Cup winners Podolski and Hummels, is taking inspiration from Barcelona legend Gerard Pique’s ‘Kings League’ in Spain, where teams are managed by celebrity coaches and the likes of Sergio Aguero have taken to the field.
The ‘Baller League’, which features 12 teams each managed by a well-known personality, will take place at Motorworld in Cologne from January 8, 2024, with Lehmann able to get involved during the winter break that Villa be enjoying from WSL action.
Manchester United is reportedly eyeing Graham Potter as a potential replacement for current manager Erik ten Hag, with former Chelsea boss Ten Hag having made contact with British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Ratcliffe is set to assume control of football operations at United with a substantial 25% stake valued at £1.3 billion.
According to The Sun, Ratcliffe is considering Potter as a managerial option for the Red Devils, though Ten Hag’s immediate dismissal is not currently on the table.
Ratcliffe, however, may need to reassess the situation if United fails to improve their disappointing form, highlighted by their exit from the Champions League after finishing at the bottom of their group.
The pressure on Ten Hag has intensified following United’s setbacks in European and domestic competitions.
Notably, there are suggestions that the Dutch manager could potentially move to a Champions League club, with Borussia Dortmund being linked to him by BILD columnist Jan Aage Fjortoft.
Man Utd want Graham Potter! Ex-Chelsea boss linked with sensational return to Premier League as incoming chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already made contact
Despite Dortmund’s struggles in the Bundesliga, they secured the top spot in theirChampions League group, finishing ahead of a star-studded Paris Saint-Germain, potentially providing some respite for current manager Edin Terzic.
Since parting ways with Chelsea in April, Graham Potter has consistently turned down coaching offers. In late November, he reportedly rejected an offer to become the head coach of Sweden’s national team.
Notably, Potter achieved success with Swedish side Ostersunds, guiding them to three promotions in five years and securing the Swedish Cup in 2017.
Potter’s coaching prowess has long been admired by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has considered him the preferred choice to take charge at Ligue 1 side Nice after the departure of Didier Digard.
However, this move did not materialise, and Francesco Farioli assumed the role. The tide may now turn for Potter and the INEOS sporting group if Manchester United fails to rejuvenate their fortunes under Erik ten Hag in a timely manner.

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen is on the verge of finalizing a contract extension with Napoli, as reported by the well-known transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
According to Romano’s report, the proposed new deal, extending until 2026, is poised to elevate Osimhen to the status of Napoli’s highest-paid player in the club’s history.
Additionally, the renewed agreement will incorporate a release clause, applicable until 2024.
“Victor Osimhen’s new deal at Napoli will include a huge salary rise; the Nigerian striker is gonna be one of the best-paid players in the history of the club,” he wrote on X (former Twitter)
“New deal will be valid until June 2026, one more year,as reported yesterday. The release clause is already valid in 2024,” he added.
Reports from Italy suggest that the release clause in Victor Osimhen’s new contract is estimated to be approximately £112 million. The Nigerian striker, honoured as the 2023 CAF Player of the Year, has attracted interest from prominent European clubs such as Chelsea, Arsenal, and Real Madrid.
With the inclusion of this release clause in his contract extension, there is the possibility thatOsimhen may secure a move to another club for a substantial fee should negotiations materialise in the upcoming 2024 summer transfer window.
Taylor Swift once said that if she were not a record-breaking, hit-making, three-time-Grammy-album-of-the-year winning superstar (our adjectives, not hers), she would’ve liked to have returned to the classroom.
“I would have gone to college, and I would probably be involved with a form of business where words and ideas are at the forefront,” she told GQ in 2015. “Such as marketing.”
Despite her current level of fame, sitting in on a business class for a marketing degree may be impractical for Taylor Swift. Nonetheless, her music and public persona have become subjects of academic study on college campuses, attracting not only Swifties but a broader audience.
From Harvard to the University of Texas at Austin to Stanford, various universities in the US now offer courses dedicated to analysing Swift’s body of work and the extensive discourse surrounding her life and career that spans over a decade.
This academic recognition serves as a fitting tribute to the singer-songwriter, whose fame and success have reached new heights in 2023.
During this semester at Arizona State, a course delved into the psychology of Swift’s songs. At the University of Florida, honours students are set to explore the role of women in popular music, starting with Swift and progressing to iconic figures like Dolly Parton and Aretha Franklin.
At UC Berkeley, a business course in artistic entrepreneurship has been inspired by Swift’s meticulous crafting of her own image and her efforts to assert control over her work. Unsurprisingly, Swift’s prowess as a wordsmith has also led to the creation of English classes, comparing her work to that of literary giants from Shakespeare to Yeats.
In the academic realm,Taylor Swift serves as a kind of Trojan horse; incorporating her name into a course description may instantly capture students’ attention, but instructors have learned how to captivate them by presenting potentially complex subjects through the lens of arguably the most famous woman on Earth, or at least Time’s “Person of the Year” for 2023.
“(Swift) gives us this lever to talk about what we’re otherwise having more difficulty convincing people is important,” said Elizabeth Scala, a professor of medieval romance, historiography and culture at the University of Texas at Austin, who next semester will reprise her literary studies course that uses Swift’s songbook as one of its primary texts.
The student response has been rapturous: Melina Jimenez, a senior lecturer who’s teaching the upcoming Swift course at the University of Florida, said her course, capped at 15 students, filled within seconds once registration opened.
Per instructors who teach her work, Swift’s music can do what many academics have tried and failed to do before — get students genuinely excited to learn something. It’s also much easier to write an essay about Chaucer when you’re comparing his work to one of Swift’s many earworms.
Swift’s appeal to students has made classes engaging and exciting
Before teaching their respective classes on Swift, the singer-songwriter had infiltrated instructors’ lives in various ways: Scala’s younger daughter is a diehard Swiftie and quizzes her mother on her favorite “Taylor’s Version” vault tracks. Jimenez listened in on Swift-centric conversations between her students but couldn’t decipher their meaning due to her not being a Swiftie.
“She’s the last monoculture,” Scala said. “Everybody can come together and enjoy (her music). It’s both highly specific and biographical but also really, really relatable to anyone.”
Scala’s literary studies class used to get students hooked through J.K. Rowling’s wildly popular “Harry Potter” series, but she was growing bored with the curriculum she’d built around the boy who lived. Then, in late 2021, Scala along with millions watched the premiere of Swift’s “All Too Well” short film, depicting a relationship gone sour set to the new, lengthier version of a song from Swift’s album “Red.”
While listening to “All Too Well,” Scala started, nearly inadvertently, drawing a curriculum around the song. She heard in its lyrics comparisons to the works of Homer. She found Swift playing with different literary forms and traditions. Even the debate between which version of the song was the true iteration felt like its own lesson.
“That’s when the popcorn went off in my head,” Scala said.
She asked her daughter, the Swiftie, to be sure the Swift-centric course would be as exciting to fans as it was to her, an academic. Her daughter told her it would likely be one of the most popular courses at the University of Texas at Austin.
The first iteration of her Swift course, called “The Taylor Swift Songbook,” was offered in 2022. It was one of the first Swift-themed classes taught at a major university, along with New York University’s course that explored “the appeal and aversions” of Swift, taught by Rolling Stone journalist Brittany Spanos.
Suddenly, Scala’s students were finding new layers to appreciate about “Romeo and Juliet,” one of the Shakespeare plays to which high schoolers are most often subjected. When Scala reframed Romeo and Juliet’s first meeting like a song — uttering flowery quatrains at each other, the lovebirds make a sonnet, she said — her students finally found something new and exciting in the centuries-old text they found boring just a few years earlier. (It helps, too, that Swift incorporated Shakespeare’s doomed lovers into one of her most popular early songs.)
Part of the reason why Jimenez is offering her course at UF is to better understand the intense idolatry that follows Swift, she said. Swift’s fame has only multiplied in the years since her debut — even after “1989,” which many critics assumed was Swift’s artistic peak.
Then, in the pandemic came “Folklore” and “Evermore,” folk-influenced records featuring well-regarded indie artists like Bon Iver and The National. After that, came “Taylor’s Versions,” re-recordings of her albums with masters she did not have ownership of, and “Midnights.” And then, this year, she kicked off the blockbuster Eras Tour, the highest-grossing concert tour in history. Oh, and she recorded the tour for a film version of her concert, which became its own phenomenon.
Jimenez may not have been a born and bred Swiftie like many of her students, but she understood the cultural impact of women artists who preceded Swift — Parton, Franklin and Billie Holiday are regarded as feminist heroes who’ve irrevocably changed their industry and art.
“More than anything else, selfishly, I want to learn what makes Swift so interesting for young people,” Jimenez said. “But I also want to find connections with other women artists who have stirred similar feelings with older generations, and hopefully introduce (them to) students (who) hadn’t given (them) much thought because they hadn’t spent the same time with their lyrics.”
The classes ask hard questions about Swift, too
These Swift-centric classes aren’t about idol worship, though they are often heavily populated (and often taught) by Swifties.
Katherine Jeng, a student at Rice University who this semester taught the one-credit class “Miss Americana: The Evolution and Lyrics of Taylor Swift,” told CNN she wanted her curriculum to acknowledge criticisms of Taylor. This includes accusations of leveraging “rainbow capitalism,” or publicly supporting the LGBTQ community for financial gain, on the album “Lover,” or drawing ire for remaining publicly apolitical until after the 2016 election.
She wanted these conversations, similar to the ones she and her fellow students were having outside the classroom, to take place while encouraging students that it’s okay to still love a pop culture colossus who’s a work-in-progress.
“I wanted to make sure we allowed for space to recognize how she’s learning and growing as a person and as a celebrity,” she said.
Taking Swift seriously, flaws and all, has been a major element of her public reappraisal since “Reputation,” her 2017 album recorded after a public flap with Kanye West and his then-wife Kim Kardashian.
She’s been a critical darling throughout her career, but her public relationships have often outshone whatever art she’s making. Her early material’s focus on girlhood, young love and heartbreak, among other familiar themes to anyone who’s been 16, hasn’t always been considered serious work worthy of recognition.
But Ava Jeffs has always taken Swift seriously. The Stanford sophomore views each of her albums as self-contained storybooks, with their own worlds, characters, and motifs.
She’s grown up with Swift, relating more to her music the older she gets. She even wrote her Stanford application essay on Swift’s song “Clean,” the final track on her renowned album “1989,” which she rerecorded this year.
“(Swift) kind of, in a way, helped me get here,” Jeffs told CNN.
In the spring, she’ll teach a course about Swift’s narrative storytelling through song. She sees Swift as a lifelong English teacher, in a way, and her close reads of Swift’s songs have prepared her for her first time teaching, she said.
“They can get as much out of the work as I did, and as I do now,” Jeffs said. “They can use that in their own life to process things. That’s what people get from stories and songs — someone putting into words what you can’t sometimes. I think that’s what Taylor’s always done.”

UEFA has announced a series of sanctions against Polish club Legia Warsaw in response to crowd disturbances preceding their Europa League match against Aston Villa last month.
Following clashes with the police outside the stadium, Legia fans were denied entry to the match in Birmingham on Nov. 30.
Aston Villa filed a complaint with UEFA regarding the behaviour of Legia’s supporters.
The UEFA Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body has decided to impose a ban on Legia Warsaw, prohibiting the sale of tickets to their away supporters for the next five UEFA games.
The ban is a consequence of crowd disturbances, acts of damage, the throwing of objects, and the lighting of fireworks.
In addition to the ban, Legia has been fined €100,000 ($107,880) and is required to contact Aston Villa within 30 days for the settlement of damages caused by their supporters.
UEFA has also issued a €20,000 fine to the Ukrainian Football Association for the racist behaviour of their supporters during the Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy.
The governing body has ordered a partial stadium closure during the Ukrainian team’s next homeUEFA competition match.
Roma’s manager, Jose Mourinho, expressed frustration over the financial constraints binding the Serie A club, emphasising that their “reality is different” compared to clubs like Manchester City.
Despite Roma’s significant spending of over €100 million ($109 million) in Mourinho’s inaugural season, the last two seasons have seen minimal transfers totaling €9.5 million.
This conservative approach aligns with UEFA’s financial fair play regulations, leading to the sale of first-choice center-back Roger Ibañez to Al Ahli in August for financial stability.
Notably, marquee signings Romelu Lukaku and Renato Sanches were secured through loan deals this summer.
Compounded by the challenges of long-term injuries to striker Tammy Abraham and defender Chris Smalling, Roma currently find themselves struggling in fourth place in Serie A.
The imminent departure of center-back Evan Ndicka for the African Cup of Nations in January further exacerbates the defensive concerns.
Despite the desire to strengthen the squad in the upcoming January transfer window, Mourinho acknowledges the hurdles Roma faces due to financial limitations.
“Not that I’m jealous, but Man City paid €80 million ($87 million) for [Kalvin] Phillips and now Pep [Guardiola] has said it would be better for him to leave in January. So he’ll leave and they’ll get someone else,”Mourinho said in his news conference ahead of Roma’s Europa League clash with Sheriff on Thursday.
“Our reality is very different. We’d like one, two, three or four new players. Tiago [Pinto] too. And the owners, too. We all want to try and improve the team to make us better for the second half of the season.
“However, it’s not easy for us to do that. I’ll be honest; if we bring in a defender in January, I’ll already be happy. But if you ask me if I’d like more than that, of course I’d like more. But it’s not possible. They’re working to try to give me options, to give me a defender.”
In the recent 3-2 victory over Red Star Belgrade, Phillips, acquired by City for €49 million in 2022, secured only his second start for the club this season and impressively scored a penalty. Sources revealed to ESPN last month that Newcastle United are considering a move for the talented England midfielder.
Heading into Thursday’s encounter against Sheriff, Roma hold the second position in theirEuropa League group, with qualification for the next round already assured. Their latest Serie A fixture saw them secure a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina last Sunday.
Raphaël Varane’s contractual situation appears to be more precarious than initially thought, as reported by The Athletic.
Contrary to previous assumptions, the French centre-back’s contract is set to expire a year earlier than anticipated, potentially leaving him without a club in the upcoming summer.
Varane, who has faced injury challenges during his time at Old Trafford, has been the subject of transfer speculation, with Manchester United considering offers in the January window.
Recent reports indicate that Varane’s contract, initially believed to conclude in 2025, actually expires in June 2024, with an optional additional year.
This revelation opens the door for Varane to explore other opportunities as early as January, allowing him to engage in discussions for a potential move and even secure a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer in the summer window.
Amidst concerns about playing time and apparent tension with manager Erik ten Hag, Varane’s frustrations have grown, particularly with the resurgence ofHarry Maguire’s form.
Notably, in a recent match against Bournemouth, the manager chose to field full-back Luke Shaw at centre-back over Varane, adding to the uncertainties surrounding Varane’s future at Manchester United.
Barcelona fans, particularly on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), are vehemently calling for the removal of head coach Xavi Hernandez following the team’s recent defeat against Royal Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League.
The disappointing 3-2 loss on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, marked Barcelona’s second consecutive defeat, following a prior 4-2 loss against Girona in the La Liga.
The frustration among Barcelona supporters is palpable on social media, where some have expressed their anger and urged the club to part ways with the legendary coach.
Fans argue that despite having a talented squad, the team has not been performing at its best this season, and the manager seems to be struggling to find effective solutions.
It’s noteworthy that, despite the recent setbacks, Barcelona managed to top their group with 12 points, edging out Porto on head-to-head results.
Shakhtar Donetsk secured the third spot, while Antwerp finished at the bottom of the group.

Presenter at Kingdom FM, Fiifi Pratt, has advised preacher and musician Sonnie Badu to refrain from discussing the incident where he was allegedly stood up by media mogul and businessman Dr. Kwaku Oteng.
Following his recent Rhythms of Africa concert, Badu shared challenges he faced in securing sponsorship, revealing instances of being let down by individuals who had initially pledged support.
One specific case mentioned was that of Dr. Kweku Oteng, the founder of Angel Broadcasting Network, who had assured support but allegedly failed to respond later.
Pratt, however, contends that Badu is now experiencing a situation reminiscent of his own behaviour. Pratt cites a previous interaction with the musician, claiming that the communication has since gone silent.

“My friend, let the matter rest because, till now, you have yet to reply to my message. You see how painful it is to call and it goes unanswered? That is how the world is.
“What you have done to me, I am pained, very pained,” Pratt stressed on his late afternoon radio programme.

The ongoing challenge of appointing a new paramount chief for Offinso is reportedly attributed to the involvement of the Queen Mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, according to statements made by Nana Apau Wiafe Ababio Sanwoansan, the paramount chief of the Heman Traditional Area (Hemanhene).
The vacancy in Offinso arises from the nomination and subsequent rejection of Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Nana Sanwoansan addressed this issue during a meeting of chiefs in the Asanteman Council, as captured in a video shared by Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio on December 13, 2023.
In his remarks, Nana Sanwoansan expressed concerns about the roles played by both the former GNPC boss and the Queen Mother in the protracted saga.
Specifically addressing the queen mother, whom he said is an acquaintance, the Hemanhene said: “Nana Offinsohemaa is also making a big mistake. Offinsohemaa, we have been close friends for 30 years; why are you doing this?
“The youth are misbehaving, and some of them are even performing all kinds of rituals. What are you saying about this? Are you encouraging these things? Stop what you are doing. You can’t be doing this with the Asantehene,” he cautioned.
He also emphasised the position of the Asantehene that KK Sarpong was not a royal and therefore was unfit to be chosen, let alone enstooled, as successor to the late Offinsohene.
He added that the chieftaincy in Offinso cannot be bought with money, as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated months ago.
“KK, you made a donation during the one-week celebration of the late Offinsohene; during the funeral, you donated, and you even signed the book of condolence. If you were part of the royal family, would you be doing all this?
“If you were a royal, would you be signing the book of condolence? Stop what you are doing. We have to tell him the truth for him to stop what he is doing. You can’t be playing with the Asantehene like this,” he said in Twi.
“Even me, the Hemanhene, cannot do this with the Asantehene, what is wrong with you?” he added.
Background:
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on April 28, 2022, days before his departure to the United States, turned down a request from Offinsohemaa Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko to accept Dr. K. K. Sarpong as her choice to ascend the Offinso stool, telling her to go and do the right thing as demanded by the traditional and customary protocols.
The kingmakers of the Offinso Traditional Area chose the former GNPC boss to succeed the late Paramount Chief of Offinso, Nana Wiafe Akenten II.
In reaction to this, some youth of Offinso described the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as an autocratic leader who is overstepping his traditional powers in the seeming chieftaincy dispute in the area.
The youth, without mincing words, kicked against Manhyia Palace’s decision that the kingmakers of the Offinso Traditional Area should bring a new person to succeed the late paramount chief of Offinso.
At a press conference, the concerned members of Offinso Youth said, “Offinso has taken note that the Asantehene has taken advantage of the respect our queen mother has for him, therefore over-exercising his powers on our queen mother and making him powerless.
“We can say emphatically thatOtumfuo has no power to destool or enstool any paramount chief and he should allow Offinso Hemaa to do her work.””

Togo faced a heartbreaking ordeal in the lead-up to the2010 Africa Cup of Nations, leading them to forfeit the tournament.
The team encountered a tragic shooting incident during their journey from Congo to Angola, resulting in the deaths of their bus driver and goalkeeper, with two other players sustaining serious injuries.
Emmanuel Adebayor, the team’s captain, described the incident as the scariest experience of his life and expressed gratitude to be alive and well today.
In a detailed account shared on his YouTube channel, Adebayor recounted the traumatic events surrounding their journey to face Ghana in the opening game of the tournament.
“We jumped in the bus and set off from Congo to Angola. We reached a place and saw that there were a lot of security officials. The way they dressed was as if they were going to war. As footballers, we only made fun of it.
“We were just young boys and were having fun. Our bus had to be delayed because they had to check our documents. It took us thirty minutes to get that sorted and we crossed that border to where the AFCON was. We had two buses.
“One for the equipment and one for the players. While on the bus, I asked that the AC be turned on, but I was told that there was no AC on that bus and that the one with the luggage had AC. The players were already to swap but I convinced them that we should use that one and enjoy the natural air.”
Adebayor recounted that the journey had been smooth until they were close to their destination, where they suddenly heard an explosion.
Following the explosion, machine gun fire ensued, resulting in the tragic death of their driver. Additionally, their goalkeeper, Kodjovi Obilale, suffered severe gunshot injuries during the incident, leaving him paralysed to this day.
“The bus with the equipment was in front and that of the players was behind. A few minutes into the journey, we heard a big explosion and I thought it was fireworks. But I looked around and there was smoke all around and all I could hear was go down. There were machine guns firing. It was like a movie.
“We were shouting and there was a bit of silence. Then we found out that the driver was dead. Our second goalkeeper started crying about his leg but we thought he was joking. Then we started seeing blood in the car and he took off his shirt and we saw that his singlet was all red.”
Emmanuel Adebayor and the rest of the squad, along with three injured players, managed to escape the scene with the assistance of their military escort.
Subsequently, Togo withdrew from the tournament, leaving their group with three remaining nations: Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso. Following the incident, Obilale expressed in an interview with L’Equipe newspaper that he considers himself a ‘miracle.’
“I’m a miracle. I want to go back home. When the tension increases in me, I lose it; I want to break everything. I want to see my children again and be back with those closest to me.”

During Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Alejandro Garnacho faced criticism for pushing Kingsley Coman into the advertising hoardings, earning him the label of a “hooligan.”

The incident reflected the current challenges and frustrations at United, with manager Erik ten Hag under pressure to secure results.
Despite Coman scoring the winning goal, United’s disappointing Champions League campaign has left them with their lowest point total and the most goals conceded in any group stage.
With their European journey over, United now shift focus to the Premier League and FA Cup, starting with a challenging match against league leaders Liverpool on Sunday.
Former Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales has accused Spain’s women’s players of seeking “revenge” against him after he refused to dismiss manager Jorge Vilda.
Rubiales alleges that the players requested the dismissal of national team coach Jorge Vilda, a request he denied.
The 46-year-old claims that his subsequent dismissal and the initiation of a criminal investigation into his conduct were part of a revenge plot against him.
Rubiales faced backlash when he kissed Spain striker Jenni Hermoso, reportedly without consent, during the trophy presentation after Spain defeated England in the Women’s World Cup final.
Following three weeks of widespread condemnation, Rubiales resigned from his position as RFEF president.
Spain’s public prosecutor launched an investigation into his conduct after Hermoso claimed that Rubiales pressured her not to complain about the kiss.
In a YouTube interview with Alvise Perez, Rubiales said: “We have been very alone due to the blackmail that we have suffered from certain footballers, who told me to kick out [Jorge] Vilda. Whoever said that they did not ask for Vilda’s head, they asked me directly in a conversation.
“They wanted his head and since I didn’t give it to them, and with Jorge [Vilda], we have been world champions, because they saw the sky open with the opportunity and said, With this theatre, we took down Vilda and Rubiales; it was revenge.”
Rubiales went on to accuse Hermoso of lying in regard to his conduct after the kiss.
He said, “Jenni lies about the fact that I put pressure on her after the kiss, and she knows she is lying.”
In October, Jorge Vilda was named the head coach of the Morocco women’s team, despite facing allegations of inappropriate conduct.
Jenni Hermoso, who continues to represent Spain and plays for the Mexican Liga MX Femenil side CF Pachuca, accused Luis Rubiales of inappropriate behaviour.
Rubiales, banned from all football activities for three years by FIFA, is currently under investigation for charges of ‘sexual assault and coercion’.
Cristiano Ronaldohas allegedly formally requested that Al-Nassr extend his current contract with them until 2027.
The 38-year-old forward, who became the world’s highest-paid footballer with a lucrative two-and-a-half-year deal in January, estimated at £177 million per year, is reportedly planning a two-year extension.
His current contract with the Saudi Pro League team is set to expire in 2025. Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, aims to continue playing until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Al-Nassr is expected to make an official announcement soon to confirm Ronaldo’s request, as the player has experienced a career rejuvenation since joining the Saudi club.
In a related development, Cristiano Ronaldo has joined a group of investors committing over $40 million to develop UFL, a new free-to-play soccer video game.
Ronaldo, contributing financially to shape the game’s development, expressed excitement about being part of the project, which aims to redefine football gaming in the coming years.
Although no official release date has been announced for UFL, testing is set to begin in the autumn.
Previously, it was reported that Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne expressed his preference between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, choosing the “GOAT” and indicating whom he would prefer to play with.
Erik ten Hag faces backlash for his post-match comments following Manchester United’s defeat to Bayern Munich.
In their final Group A match of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, United suffered a 1-0 loss to the Bundesliga giants, with Kingsley Coman scoring the only goal.
Despite needing a win to have any chance of qualifying for the last 16, United managed only one victory in their last five group matches.
In the aftermath of the Bayern defeat, ten Hag claimed his team had put on a good performance, eliciting anger and disbelief from some Manchester United fans.
“We didn’t lose it today. We had some good performances, but we made some mistakes—individual errors from players,” ten Hag noted via TNT Sports.
"We didn't make it… we have to accept and learn from it!" 💪

Turkey’s premier football league is set to resume play on Tuesday after a one-week hiatus prompted by an on-field attack by a club president on a referee.
The incident unfolded at the conclusion of a Super Lig match on Monday evening when Ankaragucu club president Faruk Koca entered the pitch and assaulted referee Halil Umut Meler, who emerged from the hospital on Wednesday with a swollen eye.
Koca was promptly arrested the following day, leading the Turkish Football Federation to immediately suspend all matches.
Chairman Mehmet Buyukeksi announced on Wednesday that league matches would resume on December 19th.
⚽️ The president of a top-flight Turkish club allegedly threatened to kill a referee during a savage attack which has resulted in the suspension of all domestic football in Turkey.
Buyukeksi said the federation’s disciplinary committee would decide on Thursday on the status of Ankaragucu.
Mehmet Yorubulut, the chief doctor at Acibadem Hospital, said the head fracture he suffered would heal in time. “The bleeding in Meler’s left eye has almost completely stopped,” he added.
Koca was arrested on Tuesday for his attack on Meler, who was later quoted as telling police that Koca had also threatened to kill him during the incident.
When the final whistle blew, Koca entered the field and hit Meler after visiting club Rizespor scored a 97th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw.
The federation saidAnkaragucu, its chairman, club officials and all those guilty of attacking the referee will be “punished in the strongest terms possible.”
AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli has firmly stated that he had no prior knowledge of Sandro Tonali’s involvement in sports betting last season.
The defensive midfielder was transferred to Newcastle United from Milan for a significant fee during the summer window.
However, it was later disclosed that Tonali had been placing bets on football games, including those in which he was directly involved. In October, he received a ten-month ban, leading to some accusations that AC Milan may have been aware of his issues.
Pioli told reporters, “No I didn’t know anything about Sandro’s problem.
“He was polite, respected, gave respect to others and was a sensible boy. Even if I think I have a close, open relationship with a player, I don’t only talk about football. But what they do outside, I don’t know everything about them.”
“Well, at the moment they signed him, it was a good deal; they signed a great deal and what happened after was something no one could have expected.
“Tonali, I am very close to him. When he was with us, he was a positive lad, always showing good will and application. He has fallen within something delicate. We are close to him and I hope this experience can be useful for him.
