“Bigots! Gambling is not a crime” — Gianluigi Buffon defends Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Fagioli

Italian football legend Gianluigi Buffon has spoken up in support of his compatriots, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Fagioli, who are currently serving bans for betting violations.

Newcastle midfielder Tonali received a significant 10-month suspension for betting on matches in which he had participated with AC Milan.

Juventus star Fagioli also faced repercussions for placing bets on unauthorised platforms, resulting in a seven-month ban and a €12,500 (£11,000/$13,000) fine.

Buffon has defended both players, emphasising the systemic issues within the sport and the pervasive nature of betting within it.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, the legendary goalkeeper said, “This is a very sensitive issue. I think it is wrong to criminalise and not to make distinctions.

Betting in itself is not a crime; the stadiums themselves and sports broadcasts are full of App advertisements of this kind, and the state encourages gambling. If, on the other hand, a footballer bets on football, he faces punishment, and rightly so; but if he bets on volleyball, basketball, or dog racing, he is not committing a crime. And it gets worse when people talk about gambling, again missing the point: gambling is not a problem of how much you spend but of the time you devote to this activity.

“And we have to explain this to the children: it is not that if you make continuous 1 euro bets by spending hours and hours in front of the App, then it is OK; whereas if one spends 1 million on one occasion, then he is a gambler. We can say he’s a moron; that’s fine; but the disease stems from the addiction, the continuity with which one does something.”

Buffon was involved in a betting scandal during his own playing days, being accused of betting on five Juventus matches between 2004 and 2005.

The veteran shotstopper was eventually cleared despite a torrent of negative press, a tendency he has since called out. “I don’t like bigots who judge with an aberrant superficiality without really knowing what the motives are,” Buffon added. “I’ve been there myself, being muddied without having committed anything; when things are cleared up, you forget to explain and apologise and leave people with a label on them. I find that deeply wrong.”

Buffon’s remarks, particularly regarding the deep-seated influence of betting in today’s football, resonate as several players face legal consequences for violating betting regulations.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney is on the verge of making a comeback after serving an eight-month suspension for admitting to 232 breaches of the English FA’s betting rules.

Despite scoring 21 goals in 35 appearances for the Bees last season, the English star’s lengthy ban might prompt interest from other clubs.

While Tonali and Fagioli weren’t as fortunate as Buffon in avoiding punishment, it is believed that their cooperation contributed to reducing their sentences from a potential three-year ban.

Both Italian stars will now undergo a rehabilitation program before making their respective returns to the field.

Getafe boss tells why Mason Greenwood earned a straight red in Rayo Vallecano clash

Getafe manager Jose Bordalas has disclosed the comments made by Mason Greenwood to the referee that led to his straight red card against Rayo Vallecano.

Greenwood was sent off after just 50 minutes into Getafe’s match on Tuesday, reducing the team to nine players.

The Manchester United loanee received a straight red card for dissent, and manager Jose Bordalas shared post-game what Greenwood had communicated to the match official.

Getafe ultimately suffered a 2-0 defeat, and the match concluded with three of their players receiving red cards.

Juanmi Latasa was the first to be sent off after receiving a second yellow card, followed by Greenwood and Damien Suarez, who also saw red upon leaving the pitch after being substituted.

Greenwood is now set to serve a suspension due to his red card, and this incident may have repercussions for his future.

The forward has reportedly attracted interest from various clubs, including La Liga giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

However, the red card is unlikely to leave a positive impression on potential suitors.

Despite the setback, Greenwood has been making an impact at Getafe since his move from Manchester United.

The club is reportedly interested in securing the 22-year-old on a permanent basis once his loan expires in the summer.

  • GRA addresses delay in enforcing new tax measures

GRA addresses delay in enforcing new tax measures

Ghana Revenue Authority has provided reasons for the delay in implementing five tax bills passed by Parliament in 2023.

Parliament passed five new tax bills, including the VAT Amendment Bill, which could lead to a more than 30% increase in motor insurance this year; the Emission Levy, which imposes an additional annual charge of 100 cents on petroleum and diesel car owners; and the Betting Tax, before their December 2023 break.

However, the Commissioner General of the GRA, Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, explained that certain conditions must be fulfilled before enforcement can take place.

“Normally, once Parliament has approved the bill, there could be some amendments and changes in the approval process. So even though our team has put together patterns for the approval processes, we cannot put them out until the final bill is given to us.”

“If you implement it and there are changes to be made, you have to go back and make all those changes.

“That is why we need to wait. The aim was to start on January 1, 2024, but we need to wait for the final bill,” Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah said on Rainbow Radio Accra.

Pedri advises Barcelona to replace Lewandowski with Man City’s ‘goal machine’ Haaland

Pedri has urgd Barcelona to pursue Manchester City’s Erling Haaland as a future replacement for the ageing Robert Lewandowski.

With Lewandowski currently 35 years old and showing signs of decline, Pedri sees Haaland as the ideal successor, referring to the City striker as a “cyborg” with a prolific goal-scoring record.

While expressing his dream signing preference, Pedri mentioned that signing Lionel Messi at a younger age would have been ideal, but currently, he would opt for Haaland.

Haaland, known for his remarkable record of 71 goals and 14 assists in 75 appearances for City, played a crucial role in their historic treble in the 2022–23 season.

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/V6aeLztxWbw?feature=share

However, he is currently sidelined due to a stress fracture in his foot, causing him to miss the FIFA Club World Cup and City’s recent Premier League fixtures.

Barcelona is already planning for the future and has secured Vitor Roque from Athletico Paranaense in a €35m deal.

Roque, assigned the No.19 shirt for the season, is seen as a player who could follow in the footsteps of Lionel Messi, who wore the same number during his initial seasons at Camp Nou.

Pedri, currently recovering from an injury, is expected to make a return to action after the Spanish Super Cup in the third week of January, facing Real Betis in La Liga.

Meanwhile, Haaland’s absence will be felt by City in their upcoming FA Cup third-round clash against Huddersfield, with no confirmed timeline for his return.

Jenni Hermoso confirms to court that Rubiales kiss was ‘unexpected’

Spain’s football player, Jenni Hermoso, has testified in court that a kiss from Luis Rubiales during the Women’s World Cup in 2023 was “unexpected” and not consensual.

Hermoso provided her account of the incident in a Madrid court following Spain’s World Cup victory in August 2023.

Luis Rubiales, then the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), kissed Hermoso, who informed the judge that the act was non-consensual.

Following the incident, Spanish prosecutors initiated a criminal investigation, and a judge will determine whether Rubiales will face charges of sexual assault and coercion.

Hermoso told the court the kiss was “unexpected and in no way consensual.” The World Cup winner also said she believed she had been a “victim of assault.”.

Hermoso refused to say any more after leaving the court, telling reporters only: “All is in the hands of justice; that’s all I can say.”

Rubiales has refuted the accusations and declined to apologise, asserting that the kiss was a “mutual” act.

Despite his denial, he was compelled to resign from his position as the president of the RFEF and received a three-year ban from football imposed by FIFA in light of the controversy.

If found guilty of sexual assault, Rubiales may be subject to a four- or five-year prison sentence, as reported by the Guardian.

Hermoso has acknowledged the challenging nature of life following the scandal, revealing that she has sought the assistance of a psychologist due to receiving threats.

Despite the difficulties, the 33-year-old has made a comeback to the Spain squad, registering a goal in her first game back against Italy.

Additionally, she recently concluded a transfer from Pachuca to Tigres.

“I’m a favoured child of God” – Maame Yeboah to critics after backlash over divorce

Media personality and marriage counsellor Maame Yeboah Asiedu has addressed criticisms surrounding her divorce and subsequent remarriage.

She explained that her decision to divorce her previous husband, after nearly two decades of marriage, was influenced by the man’s legal actions to annul the marriage—a move she disagreed with but couldn’t prevent.

Contrary to public perceptions, Maame Yeboah Asiedu asserted that her divorce doesn’t contradict her counseling principles, emphasizing that it was not her choice to end the marriage.

She expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to remarry within a year of her divorce.

“I haven’t made up my mind to divorce but with all that you hear about me, there is one question I want to ask you, who divorced the other? The only thing I can say is that my husband divorced me; it was not my decision.

“I’m not a deceiver like people say, that I don’t practice what I preach but I have been practising. it’s just that it was taken from me. If your husband seeks a divorce in court, there is nothing you can do about it.

“I am married now and what surprises you is why I married so early after my divorce but I’m a favoured child of God. If I divorced ten thousand times, I would marry ten thousand times. I know why I’m trending but I’m the only woman who has married after divorcing in just a year.”

The recent marriage ceremony of Maame Yeboah Asiedu, which surfaced on social media, has triggered intense reactions from the public.

Several netizens criticised her for divorcing, especially considering her previous strong advocacy against the same act.

Man Utd explores Bundesliga options for offensive signings

In a bid to enhance their goal-scoring capabilities, Manchester United has compiled a list of four attacking players they are considering signing in the January transfer window, as reported by The Athletic.

The highlighted players on United’s radar include Bayern Munich’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Thomas Müller, RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner, and the in-form Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy.

The intention is to provide additional support to their recent acquisition, striker Rasmus Højlund, who has struggled with only one goal in 15 Premier League appearances.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, the existing options, have also faced challenges in goal production.

However, financial constraints are reportedly limiting United’s ability to make signings promptly as they await funding approval from new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Ineos group.

Considering Bayern’s interest in Guirassy, Choupo-Moting and Müller emerge as potentially affordable short-term solutions.

Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho’s departure from United seems imminent, with talks of a loan deal to Borussia Dortmund until the end of the season in progress.

West Ham United had previously shown interest, but Dortmund is now the front-runner for Sancho’s return, where he aims to rejuvenate his career after a successful stint in the Bundesliga.

Ten Hag insists on his role in Man Utd transfer decisions under INEOS – Source

Man Utd Erik ten Hag aims to maintain his influence in Manchester United’s recruitment decisions even after the approval of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority investment in the club, as per a source reported by ESPN’s Rob Dawson.

A team led by Ratcliffe, the chairman and CEO of INEOS, is poised to take charge of football operations at Old Trafford upon finalizing the $1.3 billion deal for a 25% stake.

Sir Dave Brailsford, the director of sport at INEOS, intends to overhaul United’s player recruitment strategy. However, Ten Hag, as per the source, is eager to ensure that he retains a significant role in the decision-making process.

Since assuming the managerial role in 2022, the Dutchman has held a veto on all transfers and wishes to continue playing a major part in determining the ins and outs of players at Old Trafford.

Questions have been raised about United’s transfer policy, notably after spending €100 million to acquire Antony from his former club Ajax.

According to ESPN’s source, the veto is a contractual provision for Ten Hag, and he anticipates this clause to be honoured despite changes in the leadership of the football department.

Ten Hag is scheduled to hold discussions with Ratcliffe, Brailsford, and the rest of the INEOS team ahead of the official ratification of the investment deal.

Chris Hughton, Black Stars squad, allegedly disappointment with subpar training facilities in Ksi

Ghana coach Chris Hughton and his coaching team are expressing frustration and anger due to the subpar camping facilities, leaving players upset about the poor conditions of the training pitch and overall camp environment just 11 days before the commencement of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The contentious decision to change the camp location from South Africa to Ghana is now causing significant dissatisfaction within the team.

The Black Stars initiated their nine-day camp in Kumasi at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, diverging from their initial plan to train at the Baba Yara Stadium.

However, an unfortunate turn of events occurred when the technical staff found the Baba Yara Stadium’s pitch unsuitable during the planned inspection, causing a setback to the team’s preparations.

The condition of the field was deemed unplayable, necessitating a change in their training location.

Despite this setback, the Black Stars remain committed to their goal of preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Nevertheless, the challenges posed by the unsatisfactory pitch conditions have intensified the disappointment of the technical team, underscoring the crucial need for suitable training environments to ensure optimal performance in the upcoming tournament.

Enhance export earnings to stabilize the exchange rate – Dr Kwakye

Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs Dr. John Kwabena Kwakye has urged the government to address the country’s exchange rate issues by boosting its export activities.

This statement was made in response to a discussion about the nation’s capacity to secure the second installment of the loan from the International Monetary Fund.

He said: “The solution is to increase export earnings and maximise the benefits from natural resources.”

Previously, Professor Peter Quartey, the Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER), conveyed optimism about the nation’s capability to reach an agreement with bilateral creditors by February.

He asserted that such an arrangement would contribute to the stabilisation of the exchange rate.

“For us to get the second tranche [funds], it is dependent on us getting into an agreement with external creditors.

“If that happens, then certainly we are likely to see some stability in the exchange rate market and that drives inflation and a lot of activities on the business front. So, if the exchange rate is relatively stable, we are likely to see some gains,” he was quoted by myjoyonline.com.

  • Baba Rahman misses AFCON line-up; he explains his exclusion

Ghanaian defender Baba Rahman has clarified the rationale behind his choice to withdraw from Ghana’s ultimate squad for the tournament in Ivory Coast. The PAOK Salonika left-back was notably absent when Ghana coach Chris Hughton revealed the final 27-man squad for the competition.

In a statement posted on the micro-blogging site X, the former Chelsea and Reading left-back explained that he made the decision to prioritize his career.

    “Hear me out:

“I just wanted to say that the decision to opt out of the AFCON was solely based on footballing reasons and nothing else.

“Playing for my country will always be the highest point of my career and every time I have been lucky to wear the shirt, I have given my all,” his message read in part.

Baba Rahman, who has accumulated 51 caps for Ghana since his debut in 2014, has faced substantial criticism lately due to his underwhelming performances.

The player’s relationship with fans has been strained, exacerbated by former Ghana coach CK Akonnor’s statement suggesting that Rahman was selected for the national team as a form of obligation.

Baba Rahman experienced disapproval from the crowd during Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Chris Hughton’s inaugural game as the Black Stars coach.

Ghana is set to commence their pre-tournament training camp in Kumasi on Tuesday.

Famous waakye seller Auntie Muni passes on after short illness – Son confirms

Popular vendor of traditional dish waakye, Antie Muni, has reportedly passed away.

As per a news report, the acclaimed waakye seller died today, Wednesday, January 3, 2023, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra after a brief illness.

Auntie Muni’s son, Arafat, in an interview with Asaaseradio confirmed his mother’s demise.

“Mummy was sick; she was complaining of pain, so we took her to the SSNIT Hospital. There were complications, so she asked that they discharge her.

“When they discharged her, after two days, we realised she was still not feeling well. So we rushed her to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for medical attention and this morning at 3 a.m. she passed away,” Arafat is quoted to have said on the Asaase Breakfast Show.

    About Auntie Muni:

Originally from Tamale in the Northern Region, Auntie Muni received education up to the middle school level before relocating to Accra slightly over two decades ago following disagreements with her husband.

Leaving behind her thriving banku, gari, and beans business in Tamale, she initially assisted her aunt in the ‘waakye’ trade in Accra before eventually taking over.

Starting her Waakye venture from home, Auntie Muni later moved to a roadside location based on her customers’ suggestions, seeking greater visibility.

Despite encountering occasional challenges in her successful waakye business, she persisted through a tough period three years ago when her children advised her to quit due to a six-month downturn.

Auntie Muni’s determination paid off as business picked up again.

Auntie Muni Waakye, situated in Labone, stands as the most renowned ‘waakye’ spot in the capital.

In an interview, she revealed that her clientele includes high-profile government officials, the children of ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, former President John Dramani Mahama, musicians, top businessmen, and ordinary Ghanaians who patronize her meals daily.

Mohammed Kudus was absent from West Ham United’s matchday squad as he had been released to join Ghana in preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

In Kudus’ absence, West Ham felt the void of his skills but managed to field an equally competent replacement.

Despite both teams creating numerous opportunities throughout the 90 minutes, neither side could find the back of the net, resulting in a goalless draw.

At 23 years old, Mohammed Kudus is anticipated to miss a minimum of three West Ham matches while representing Ghana in the 2023 AFCON.

If the Black Stars progress to the AFCON final, the prominent forward may be absent for additional games.

UK begins trial for smart passports; travellers will not need to show passports to enter UK

UK is considering the trial of “smart” passport gates that could allow travellers to cross the border without presenting a physical passport.

Phil Douglas, the director-general of the UK Border Force, aims for a “much more frictionless facial recognition” system, hoping to upgrade the current eGates to enable arriving passengers to enter the UK by simply looking into a camera and keeping their passports in their pockets.

The existing eGates use facial recognition, checking each traveler’s face against the data encrypted on the passport. The proposed system would rely on centralised data.

Currently, eGates are accessible to travellers aged 10 or above from the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea.

However, the new smart gates would require travellers to be registered on a centralised database.

The phased implementation of the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization Scheme is expected to provide the necessary information for eligible travellers.

Mr Douglas told The Times, “We will know a lot more information about people upfront.”

Other countries are already using advanced facial recognition, with the world’s busiest international airport, Dubai, deploying the technology for some travellers.

Dubai Airports claims: “Smart Gates allow you to get through immigration procedures in as little as five seconds.”
Families with children under 15, as well as travellers under 1.2 metres tall, are unable to use the smart gates in Dubai.

Australia employs similar technology at some of its airports.

In the UK, an initial trial for the proposed “smart” passport gates is expected to occur at a single airport, involving a limited number of travelers.

Subsequently, a procurement exercise will follow, and the cost of upgrading the existing eGates, numbering in the hundreds, is anticipated to be in the tens of millions.

However, passengers who experienced the collapse of the entire UK eGates system in May 2023 might approach these proposed enhancements with caution.

The failure of a systems upgrade over the late May bank holiday resulted in tens of thousands of passengers queuing for many hours.

  • Raphaël Varane’s contract extension not on Man United’s wish list – Source

Raphaël Varane’s contract extension not on Man United’s wish list – Source

Manchester United has opted not to activate a one-year extension in Raphaël Varane’s contract, as per a source informed ESPN.

This decision grants the defender the opportunity to engage in negotiations with clubs outside the Premier League starting January 1, potentially paving the way for a free transfer from Old Trafford in the upcoming summer.

Although manager Erik ten Hag views Varane as a crucial part of the squad, United is hesitant to trigger a one-year option that would commit the 30-year-old to wages exceeding £300k-per-week until June 2025.

While the club hasn’t ruled out extending Varane’s tenure, discussions around a new contract are likely to center on a performance-related agreement.

Varane’s current contract is set to conclude in June 2024, mirroring a strategy previously employed with former goalkeeper David De Gea.

The club decided against activating a one-year option in De Gea’s contract, resulting in his departure on a free transfer last summer.

Both Varane and De Gea were among United’s highest earners last season, alongside Casemiro and Jadon Sancho.

Marcus Rashford joined this group with a new long-term contract in July worth approximately £315k-per-week.

United is expected to trigger one-year extensions for Victor Lindelöf and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to retain them at Old Trafford until 2025, with their contracts initially set to expire next summer.

Anthony Martial’s contract extends until the summer, but United has chosen not to exercise the option for extension until 2025.

Despite scoring two goals in 19 appearances this season, the 28-year-old has been absent for the past three weeks due to illness, as confirmed by Ten Hag before the 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

“He’s unwell, he’s not available,” Ten Hag said.

United are back in action against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium in the FA Cup third round on Jan. 8.

Mexican Champions Tigres secure signing of Spain’s Jenni Hermoso

Women’s World Cup standout from Spain, Jenni Hermoso, has officially joined the Mexican champions Tigres Femenil after parting ways with her former team, Pachuca.

The 33-year-old confirmed her departure from Pachuca on December 31 and announced her commitment to continuing her professional career in the Liga MX Femenil.

“Nothing makes me more excited than announcing that I will be part of this incredible club. All my desire and enthusiasm to wear the shirt,” the World Cup winner wrote on X.

Having scored 26 goals and contributed 10 assists in 41 games for Pachuca since joining in the summer of 2022, Hermoso has made a notable impact.

The Spanish forward has now transitioned to Tigres, where she will be under the guidance of Spanish coach Milagros Martinez.

However, the official unveiling of Hermoso at Tigres is temporarily postponed.

This delay is attributed to her current commitment in Madrid, where the former Barcelona player is providing evidence in court against Luis Rubiales, the former president of Spain’s Football Federation.

This legal proceeding pertains to an unsolicited kiss that occurred in the aftermath of Spain’s World Cup victory last summer.

Camera crew helps find Jurgen Klopp’s missing ring

Jurgen Klopp experienced a shift from delight to dismay during Liverpool’s significant Premier League victory, as he briefly misplaced his wedding ring in the post-match celebrations on Monday.

A sharp-eyed TV cameraperson played a crucial role in spotting the ring in the midst of the Anfield pitch. Klopp, visibly relieved, responded by kissing the ring in front of the cameras.

“I had a massive shock,” Klopp said, “but it’s back.”
The incident occurred shortly after Liverpool secured a 4-2 victory over Newcastle United, elevating Klopp’s team three points ahead of Aston Villa in the standings.

After congratulating his players and moving towards the fans with applause, Klopp suddenly noticed the absence of his wedding ring. In a quest to find it, he thoroughly searched the grass around his location, even seeking assistance from a steward.

Fortunately, the person operating the camera for British broadcaster Sky Sports informed Klopp about the whereabouts of his ring, resolving the brief moment of concern.

“Oh my God, that would have been really awful,” Klopp said. “I lost it once in my life — I needed a professional diver because it was in the sea.

“From time to time, when I lose one or two kilos, it’s not the right fit anymore.”

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah adopted the iconic Mohammed Kudus celebration, sitting on the advertising board, following his brace against Newcastle United.

The Egyptian forward replicated Kudus’ customary celebration after scoring for West Ham.

Salah’s goals contributed to Liverpool’s 4-2 victory, allowing them to start the year at the top of the Premier League table.

Despite this success, Salah, aged 31, is set to depart England on Tuesday to join his national team for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Interestingly, Salah is anticipated to face Kudus in the second Group B game of the continental championship, creating an exciting matchup between the two Premier League stars.

Dr. Bawumia gifts GH¢30,000 to support Chef Faila’s cook-a-thon

Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has generously contributed GH¢30,000 to Chef Faliatu Abdul Razak, a Ghanaian aiming to establish a Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon.

The Northern Regional Minister, Shani Alhassan Saibu, presented the funds on behalf of Dr. Bawumia during his visit to Chef Faila at the Modern City Hotel, demonstrating support and encouragement.

Clarifying the Vice President’s absence from the occasion due to official government duties abroad, Minister Shani Alhassan Saibu conveyed Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to Chef Faila’s cause.

In an interview with JoyPrime TV, monitored by GhanaWeb, Minister Saibu expressed that the entire nation stands united in supporting Chef Faila’s endeavor to break the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon, aiming to bring pride to the nation.

“We are here on behalf of His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and on behalf of His Excellency the Vice President and flagbearer of the party [NPP], Dr. Bawumia.

“He has asked us to donate on his behalf because duty has taken him out of the country and we would be presenting the donation to the team, which would help her do what others couldn’t do.

“I know that she’s very resilient and she’s going to break the record and even set a record that will be too difficult for anybody to challenge very shortly. We are here to donate GH¢30,000 from the vice president [Dr. Bawumia] to aid her in her ambition to break the Guinness World Record.

“On my behalf, I want to wish Chef Faila well and hope that she makes me proud because others have done it, she too can do it that wise. I say it is possible,” he said.

    About the competition:

After media personality Afua Asantewaa Aduonum’s sing-a-thon world record attempt officially ended a few days ago, another Ghanaian has started an attempt to break another Guinness World Record.

Even as hundreds and thousands crossed over into the year 2024 in churches and places of worship, others did so at places of entertainment or with friends and families.

Over in the north, Chef Failatu Abdul Razak has started an attempt to break the current Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon.

She is aiming to clock a 120-hour cook-a-thon with the event hosted at the Modern City Hotel in Tamale.

Initial videos shared by the state broadcaster, GTV, showed Failatu and her assistants in their glass-shielded kitchen setup embossed with images of Chef Faila.

Cook-a-thon became popular in 2023 after Nigerian Chef Hilda Baci broke the then-world record. An Irish chef, however, overthrew her months later.

Alan Fisher cooked for 119 hours, 57 minutes and 16 seconds.

The ‘chilling’ alone during this festivities is proof that there is no economic hardship in Ghana -Diana Asamoah

Ghanaian gospel artist Diana Asamoah has expressed scepticism regarding assertions of severe economic challenges in the country.

During the UTV Day With the Stars event, where numerous celebrities gathered to contribute to program production, she questioned the validity of claims about Ghana’s tough economic conditions.

Asamoah pointed to the recent Christmas and New Year celebrations in Ghana as evidence that such claims might be unfounded.

She specifically credited President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership and suggested that if the economic situation were truly dire, the festivities would not have been observed as well as they were.

“Looking at the way people celebrated Christmas in 2023, I have never seen such a thing anywhere. I don’t see the reason why Ghanaians are complaining that the economy is hard.

“Those saying the country is hard are lying. We should be grateful to Nana Addo because if the economy were indeed hard, Ghanaians wouldn’t be celebrating like this,” she said.

Additionally, she declared her endorsement for the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressing confidence in his potential victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Diana Asamoah has consistently and proudly declared her support for the NPP, actively defending the party’s policies. On multiple occasions, she has refrained from blaming President Nana Akufo-Addo for the prevailing economic challenges in the country.

The NPP, led by its flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, aspires to “break the 8” in the upcoming 2024 general elections, aiming to become the first political party to secure three consecutive terms in office.

  • GRA pursues accounts valued at $2.8 billion owned by Ghanaians abroad

GRA pursues accounts valued at $2.8 billion owned by Ghanaians abroad

Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced its intention to pursue the accounts of Ghanaians residing abroad who are not fulfilling their tax obligations.

This decision comes following the examination of 70,000 accounts belonging to Ghanaians in 40 different countries.

Revealing this information, Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, shared these details during an episode of PM Express Business Edition with host George Wiafe.

“For the 40 countries in which we have completed work, the value of money in these accounts is pegged at $2.8 billion,” he stated.

“However, the Ghana Revenue Authority has been able to raise a tax liability of $1.6 billion.

This is an assessment, but that doesn’t mean that we have already collected the taxes on these accounts, the GRA boss added.

Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah emphasised that this initiative is the result of two months of work conducted by the GRA.

The Commissioner General further disclosed that his department anticipates receiving additional data in the first week of January 2024, potentially enhancing the anticipated revenue inflows.

Reasons and legal basis by GRA

The Commissioner-General of the GRA stated that the organisation is obtaining information through the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Agreement.

This agreement involves both the automatic exchange of information among member countries and information exchange upon request.

He explained that 150 countries, including Ghana, have endorsed this agreement facilitated by the OECD. It enables member countries to share information either through requests or automatically. This agreement empowers Ghana to engage in the reciprocal sharing of information with other member countries.

“This means that Ghana can go to the UK and ask for information on Ghanaian residents in that country and the UK can also request that GRA share information on their residents in Ghana,” Dr. Owusu-Amoah pointed out.

The development, he added, will also help in checking money laundering.

“Ghana is one of the 5th countries in Africa that, in 2022, managed to satisfy all the conditions to be part of the OEDC agreement on sharing data for tax purposes on residents in their countries,” the GRA Boss revealed.

What will happen to residents in Ghana who don’t cooperate?

Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah added that individuals failing to meet their tax obligations would be granted a grace period to comply with the GRA. However, if they fail to do so within the stipulated time, the Authority will proceed to impose the necessary penalties.

In addition, the Commissioner General disclosed that the GRA is set to launch a Special Voluntary Disclosure Program (SVDP) tailored for foreign nationals and businesses operating in Ghana.

Under this program, foreign individuals and businesses in the country can voluntarily disclose any unreported or underreported information regarding their financial activities outside Ghana for tax purposes.

This initiative operates within the framework of the Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement (MCAA) and the Standard for Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information in Tax Matters Act, 2018 (Act 967).

Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah clarified that the Voluntary Disclosure Programme encourages participants to voluntarily disclose any errors or omissions, with the potential for a reduction in the penalties that would typically be applied to such violations.

He also added that “All information provided under the Voluntary Disclosure Programme will be treated with utmost confidentiality, whilst stringent protocol measures have been put in place to protect the security and privacy of your data.

This is the first thing John Dumelo plans to do when voted into power

Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo, has outlined his plans for when he assumes the role of a Member of Parliament.

Currently running for the MP position in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Dumelo shared on his Twitter handle on January 1st that he intends to address the issue of exorbitant rent charges.

Expressing his concern, Dumelo highlighted that Ghanaians are supposed to pay a maximum of 6 months’ rent for residential properties.

However, he pointed out that many landlords demand an upfront two-year rent advance before leasing properties. If elected, John Dumelo has pledged to prioritize addressing this issue as one of his initial actions in office.

“The first thing I will champion when I become a member of parliament is the rent issue. Ghanaians must pay a maximum 6-month rent advance for residential properties,” he posted.

The Rent Control Department of Ghana has cautioned landlords against demanding more than six months’ rent in advance from their tenants, saying this is against the law and can lead to prosecution.

The department’s PRO, Emmanuel Kporsu, in an interview earlier in the year that tenants can voluntarily pay more than six months’ rent in advance if they wish, but landlords cannot force them to do so.

The department’s statement was made in the context of the housing challenges and the demand for affordable and social housing in the country.

Ghanaian forward Jordan Ayew concluded 2023 as the leading dribbler in the English Premier League.

The Crystal Palace attacker achieved the highest number of completed dribbles, totaling 84, securing the top position on the chart at the conclusion of an exceptional year.

Ayew continues to have a remarkable season with the South London club, showcasing his skills by scoring two goals and providing five assists in 19 Premier League matches.

However, Ayew has left for Ghana in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations, posing a significant setback for the Eagles in his absence.

“It was important to win. Today’s my last game because I’ll be off to the Africa Cup of Nations. I wanted to go with a win,” said Ayew after the game.

In the meantime, Erling Haaland concluded the year as the top goal scorer with an impressive tally of 29 goals, while Mohamed Salah topped the assist chart with 15.

Fitch Solutions predicts an overrun in public expenditure ahead of December 2024 elections

In anticipation of the general elections scheduled for December 2024, Fitch Solutions is forecasting a notable rise in public expenditure.

Providing further details on its projection, the UK-based financial firm suggests that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to engage in substantial spending efforts to garner public support in its competition against the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s primary opposition party.

“A more expansionary fiscal stance will inject additional demand into the economy. While the authorities have confirmed their commitment to implementing fiscal reforms in line with Ghana’s IMF programme, we anticipate significant public expenditure overruns ahead of the December 2024 general election, particularly given that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) trails behind in the polls,” parts of a report from Fitch Solutions read.

According to Fitch Solutions, in the last century, the expenditure of successive governments during election years has increased by 3.0 per cent, representing the government’s tendency to subsidise utilities and implement social welfare programmes to garner public support.

“We anticipate that such measures will be implemented again in 2024, improving disposable incomes and stimulating household spending. All told, we forecast private consumption growth to tick up to 3.8% in 2024, up from 3.2% in 2023, contributing 2.9 percentage points to headline real GDP [Gross Domestic Product] growth.”.

Furthermore, the probable initiation of social support programs leading up to the December 2024 elections is expected to bolster disposable incomes and stimulate domestic consumption.

Dr. Letsa announces certification of about 200 entrepreneurs in Volta Region for African Export

Nearly 200 entrepreneurs and businesses in the Volta region have received certification to engage in exports to the African market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiative.

This effort was facilitated by the National AfCFTA Coordination Secretariat, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with support from the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The initiative aims to connect entrepreneurs and businesses, allowing them to trade among themselves on the continent.

During a media soiree organized by the Regional Coordinating Council, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister, announced this significant development.

He highlighted that the initiative provides businesses with the opportunity to export to the rest of the continent “quota-free and duty-free” in alignment with AfCFTA principles.

The businesses involved, many led by young entrepreneurs and first-timers, aspire to create business empires, expand job opportunities, and enhance the local economy.

Dr. Letsa emphasised the positive economic results and progress resulting from the Volta Fairs, noting that some entities are already exporting directly to the US and European markets.

Notable success stories include Suncity Farms, supplying Monarch Spices to multinational supermarkets in the US, and Maphlix Trust Ghana Limited and Farms, a leading exporter of fresh produce. Other noteworthy participants include Kawa Moka, Leklebi and Ziavitutu, known for their production of organic coffee; Del Christ; and Volta Winery.

The Regional Minister acknowledged that his administration’s commitment to positioning the region as a favourable tourism and economic destination is becoming a reality, with records indicating positive growth figures.

Dr Letsa said, “Tourism numbers have gone up as well as revenue,” with the region turning out to be a popular meeting hub for corporate Ghana, an attestation that “we are doing something right.”

Many organisations have resorted to Ho for their Annual General Meetings with offers on standby for 2024 already.

He said, “We have won the best Regional Coordination Council in the country, back-to-back,” and he was not ready to relinquish that.

The Minister said Volta remained the true microcosym of corporate Ghana, from the sea, landscape, forest, mountains, and rivers, and these would translate into creating jobs and industries at the back of the region’s tourism potential.

He said the initiative “Visit Volta Region, Experience Ghana” is a reality and is urging investors to do business here.

“I was in Kenya and the US to woo investors to the region, and it’s just a matter of time for the gains to flourish,” he said.

Regarding the Ho Aerodrome, Dr. Letsa mentioned that PassionAir and AWA were compelled to discontinue services on the route due to challenges with breaking even, primarily caused by inadequate patronage.

He disclosed that the government’s plan to activate all domestic airports nationwide is anticipated to revive air travel between Ho and other parts of the country in the coming year.

Dr. Letsa emphasised that the region presents an attractive opportunity for investors seeking partnerships.

Arteta regrets team’s ‘weakest’ display of the season

Mikel Arteta has characterised Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Fulham as their “worst performance of the season,” labelling it “painful.”

Despite Bukayo Saka opening the scoring in the fifth minute, goals from Raúl Jiménez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid resulted in Arsenal’s second consecutive Premier League defeat, leaving them in fourth place on the table.

With the FA Cup third-round clash against Liverpool on the horizon, Arsenal won’t feature in the league until January 20. Arteta expressed the need for his team to rectify their course after another disappointing performance, following Thursday’s loss to West Ham.

“We certainly need that reset after today, because that’s going to be in our tummy for a few days,” Arteta said.

“The game against West Ham feels very different, so you can move on. It’s football; it can happen.

“What happened today cannot happen again, because if you do that, we will never have the chance to be where we want to be. Today could have been a beautiful day to end the year, that’s for sure.

“But these are the margins, and you have to try and find the bar. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror because today’s performance is the worst we have played all season.

“Painful and a sad day, that’s how I would sum it up. We had the chance to be top of the table after 20 games with the consistency that we’ve shown.

“We haven’t managed well enough to earn the right to win the game. Three days ago, we lost a game that we deserved to win; today was a very different story.”

Midfielder Declan Rice insisted Arsenal needed to be more ruthless after Saka’s early opening goal.

“Today, when you go 1-0 up, you need to take more control, have more self-belief, have more desire and your mentality needs to be better. We need to demand more from each other,” Rice said on Sky Sports.

“I am not saying we didn’t do it, because we still tried to push for more. But ultimately, Fulham have won the game and we have to look at why they won the game.

“Once we went 1-0 up, we had to push on again and go for more. In this league, there is no room to mess up. There are so many good teams around you, and obviously we want to be pushing up the top end of the table. It is a tough one to take today.”

  • “It is five” – Empress Gifty and husband share passionate kiss as they mark their 5th wedding anniversary

Report indicates cocoa’s largest surge since 2008 spells trouble for chocolate consumers

Cocoa’s most substantial annual gain in 15 years poses a challenge for chocolate consumers worldwide. The surge in cocoa prices is expected to have a more pronounced impact on shoppers in the coming year as chocolate manufacturers deplete stocks acquired at lower prices and face the full force of the rally.

White sugar futures have marked a fifth consecutive annual gain, contributing to inflation in the sweets aisle. Adverse weather conditions, including relentless rain and the onset of the annual harmattan, have hampered cocoa crops in West Africa, the world’s top-growing region.

The most active cocoa contract in London has surged by 70% this year, reaching £3,506 per ton—the largest annual gain since 2008.

The rally stands out, especially considering the downturn observed across other staple crops; the Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index has experienced a 14% decline, the most significant in a decade.

Cocoa’s supply concentration, with Ivory Coast and Ghana contributing 60% of the output, leaves little room for alternative growers to bridge the gap. While some countries, like Brazil and Ecuador, aim to expand their production, the process of producing new tree-bearing pods takes several years.

Despite the potential impact of seasonal dusty winds on fieldwork progress, the weather pattern El Nino poses a risk of exacerbating the dry spell. While lower demand may temporarily alleviate prices, Rabobank anticipates London futures to remain above £3,000 per tonne until the second half of next year—a historically high level.

Furthermore, buyers in the European Union are preparing for new deforestation regulations that could increase costs throughout the cocoa supply chain. Cocoa futures in New York have risen by over 60% this year, heading for the most significant gain since 2001.

  • Government oversubscription of 3.38% leads to minor decline in T-Bills interest rates

Government oversubscription of 3.38% leads to minor decline in T-Bills interest rates

Interest rates at the recent Treasury bills auction experienced a slight decline as the government witnessed a marginal oversubscription of Treasury bills.

The latest data from the Treasury Market reveals that the government successfully secured GH¢4.212 billion, surpassing the targeted amount by 3.38%.

The oversubscription had an impact on the interest rates of Treasury bills, leading to a decrease. The rate on the 91-day bill saw an 11 basis point reduction to 29.24%.

Similarly, the rate on the 182-day bill decreased from the previous 31.94% to 31.88%. The yield on the one-year bill also dropped to 32.48% from the preceding week’s 32.49%.

The decline in the profit rate of Treasury bills contradicts predictions from financial experts who anticipated an increase in T-bills yields due to the government’s need for funds to support its budget.

In terms of distribution, approximately GH¢2.147 billion came from the 91-day bill, constituting about 50.9% of the total bids.

The one-year bill followed with about GH¢1.646 billion tendered, and all were accepted, making up 39.07% of the total bids. The 182-day bill received bids worth GH¢417.80 million, of which GH¢416.33 million were accepted.

Overall, the funds raised will be used, in part, to refinance estimated maturities of GH¢2.55 billion.

  • Ghana will be delivered from it’s difficulties in 2024 – Agyinasare predicts

Ghana will be delivered from it’s difficulties in 2024 – Agyinasare predicts

Founder and leader of Perez Chapel International, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, has predicted that the economic challenges facing the country will be resolved in the coming year.

The Archbishop emphasised that this transformation would not be attributed to political parties but rather to the divine intervention of God.

Speaking at the Church’s 31st ‘Night of Prophecy and Power’ in Accra, Archbishop Agyinasare urged Christians to prepare themselves for a more favourable year ahead.

“This country is going through difficulties, but there are difficulties that will be resolved in 2024, not because of political parties, but because God has decided that it is His year of great power,” he said.

Ghana has grappled with economic challenges since 2022, marked by high inflation, an elevated cost of living, and the depreciation of the cedi against the dollar. Seeking assistance, the country has turned to the International Monetary Fund to stabilise and restore confidence in the economy.

In a positive turn, the last quarter of 2023 exhibited signs of economic recovery, with inflation reaching as low as 26.4 percent—the lowest in 13 months.

Archbishop Agyinasare characterised 2023 as the Year of God’s faithfulness, highlighting God’s steadfastness in the face of political turmoil and challenges witnessed in some African countries. He prophesied that 2024 would be a year of experiencing the power of God, hence the Church adopting “Our Year of God’s Power” as its theme for 2024.

Encouraging Christians, Archbishop Agyinasare urged them to commit themselves to the work of God in 2024. Additionally, he appealed to affluent individuals to invest in the church, contributing to the broader dissemination of the gospel across all areas.

  • Chris Hughton announces final lineup for 2023 AFCON

Chris Hughton announces final lineup for 2023 AFCON

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton is set to unveil Ghana’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The coach is currently meeting with representatives of the Ghanaian media at the Alisa Hotel, where he will not only announce the squad but also provide insights into some of the decisions he has made.

Leading up to the squad announcement, speculations have circulated that both Baba Rahman and Fatawu Issahaku might be absent from the team.

Reports suggest that both players requested to be excused from the squad, citing their commitment to focus on their respective club activities.

Baba Rahman, currently in the recovery process from injury, has sought permission to concentrate on his club career, aiming to secure consistent playing time at the club level.

Additionally, reports from Saddick Adams of Angel Broadcasting Network indicate that Fatawu Issahaku has requested exclusion from the national team, expressing concerns that his participation could impact his efforts to establish himself at Leicester City in the Championship.

“Per his loan agreement at Leicester, there’s a clause that requires Fatawu Issahaku to meet a threshold of matches to secure a permanent stay with the English side.

“The AFCON will mean he misses a good number of games, the reason he’s opted out of the Ghana squad,” Saddick Adams tweeted.

Commenting on Issahaku’s chances of playing at the AFCON, the Leicester City coach said, “We are still waiting for the federations’ answer. We will see if we can have them available for the next game,” says Maresca.

Issahaku has made a significant impact with two goals and seven assists in 21 Championship appearances for Leicester this season.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to commence on January 12, 2023, and conclude on February 11, 2023.

Ghana has been placed in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.

The Black Stars will hold their pre-tournament camp in Kumasi.

What happened to Empress Lupita and Godpapa The Greatest? Their new look causes stir online

Ghanaian ‘Tiktok couple’ Joycelyn Chayah, widely recognised as Empress Lupita, and her husband, ‘Godpapa The Greatest,’ who gained fame after they attracted attention following their bizarre videos and ‘weird’ domestic activities, went viral.

However, their fame turned into infamy when they were arrested and remanded by the police for allegedly killing two of their three children and burying them.

After prosecution, the courts have officially declared the couple to be mentally unstable, hence the need for psychiatric treatment.

As reported by Ghanaian journalist Kofi Adoma Nwanwani, the Attorney-General recommended, during the court proceedings, that Empress Lupita and her husband undergo treatment at a psychiatric hospital.

However, in a video of the couple sighted on social media, they appear to have gained weight and are looking good compared to how they were looking previously.

This new development seems to have won the hearts of many Ghanaians who have expressed admiration for their transformation.

    See some reactions below:

    delay.ba: “They look good.”

18.03.muse: “Awww they looking so good! Praise God. May they receive full healing and everlasting love. ❤️ Lupi lupi!”

ohemaastirling: “But they are looking good, ooo.”

adjhoa: Aaw, they look super good 😊

Court officially declares Empress Lupita and Godpapa The Greatest as mentally unstable

Joycelyn Chayah, popularly known as Empress Lupita, and her husband, ‘Godpapa The Greatest,’ have reportedly been declared mentally unstable during a court proceeding by the Attorney-General, Godfred Dame.

As per Ghanaian journalist Kofi Adoma Nwanwani’s report, the Attorney-General recommended that Empress Lupita and her husband be referred to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.

The decision was made after the court deemed the couple to be mentally unstable, and the Attorney General advised that treatment would be essential for their recovery.

In a video shared by MariGyata on Instagram, Kofi Adoma highlighted that this directive aims to facilitate Empress Lupita and her husband in overcoming their mental health challenges.

“As you can see, ‘Godpapa the Greatest’ and Empress Lupita are exiting the court premises. The good news is that the Attorney General [Godfred Dame] has advised that they should be taken to the [psychiatric] hospital for treatment because they are deemed mentally unsound.

“So as the family and most Ghanaians were looking for an outcome like this, it has indeed come to pass. As it stands, both of them would be allocated to two different hospitals,” he said.

When ‘Godpapa The Greatest’ was asked to share some words with the general public after the court sitting, he retorted, “I don’t want to talk but I wish Ghanaians a Merry Christmas. Next year, by this time, everything will be fine, with everyone alive too.”
