Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has shed light on Thomas Partey’s earnest efforts to regain fitness in time for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Addressing the media before Arsenal’s FA Cup match against Liverpool, Arteta revealed a pragmatic decision-making process between the club and the FA regarding Thomas Partey’s situation.
Arteta clarified that, despite Thomas Partey’s strong desire to join Ghana’s team for the AFCON, the physical impossibility stemmed from the long-term injury he sustained in October 2023.
Providing an update on Partey’s status, Arteta indicated that the 29-year-old midfielder is far from making a comeback, both for Arsenal and the Ghana national team.
“It was about common sense. He had a long-term injury. He really wanted to be with his national team but he’s still far from training for the team and it didn’t make sense for him to be involved,” he said.

Nigerian entrepreneur and founder of Tingo Group, a global agri-fintech conglomerate, is facing charges from U.S. authorities over an alleged “massive fraud” scheme deceiving investors and regulators.
If convicted of conspiracy, securities fraud, and making false filings with the SEC, he could face up to 45 years in prison.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office asserts that Mmobuosi inflated the financial performance and assets of his companies, including Tingo Mobile and Tingo Foods, selling them to U.S.-listed entities like Tingo Group and Agri-Fintech Holdings, which then issued misleading financial statements.
He allegedly syphoned off cash from these companies and profited from selling their shares at inflated prices.
The SEC filed a civil complaint in December 2023, revealing that Mmobuosi engaged in fictitious transactions worth billions of dollars since 2019, describing the fraud as “staggering.”
Trading in Tingo Group and Agri-Fintech Holdings was suspended in November 2023 due to concerns about the accuracy of publicly available information.
Hindenburg Research, a short-selling activist group, exposed Mmobuosi’s fraud in June 2023, branding Tingo Group an “exceptionally obvious scam.”
Their report challenged Mmobuosi’s claims of developing “Nigeria’s first mobile payment app” and accused him of falsifying financials, causing Tingo Group’s shares to plummet by over 60 percent.
Mmobuosi, planning a $500 million capital round and IPO in 2022, vehemently denies the allegations, declaring his intent to fight them in court. He insists that he is a victim of conspiracy and maintains the legitimacy and profitability of his companies.

Offinso Traditional Area recently witnessed the formal induction of a new paramount chief, 68-year-old Nana Amoako Poku, whose stool name was unveiled as Nana Dwamena Akenten II.
In adherence to tradition, the new Offinsohene took the oath before chiefs and the community, followed by a ceremonial drive through the town’s main streets, as captured in a video sighted online.
A robust security presence, comprising police personnel and armed soldiers, accompanied the chief as he waved to the enthusiastic crowd.
Amid cheers from the people, there was a resounding acknowledgment that Nana Dwamena Akenten II was the long-awaited leader they had yearned for. He takes the mantle from Nana Wiafe Akenten, who served as paramount chief from 1946 to 2021.
The formal announcement of the new paramount chief took place during the final Asanteman Council meeting of 2023, presided over by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
This declaration marked the resolution of a protracted dispute, during which Otumfuo rejected the Queen’s preferred candidate on three occasions.
The Queen Mother, unable to nominate a qualified royal for the vacant stool, was absent during the announcement. Instead, the responsibility fell on Kwakwaboa Abusuapanyin, Opanyin Yaw Nkrumah Adusah, who introduced Nana Amoako Poku as the new Offinsohene.
Despite three opportunities given to the Queen Mother to nominate a candidate, her choice of Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong, a former Chief Executive of theGhana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), was contested due to his not hailing from the royal family.
In accordance with Asante tradition, the Abusuapanyin stepped in to nominate a candidate, leading to the introduction of Nana Amoako Poku.
Here are five key facts about the Offinsohene-elect

Chief of Kwahu Tafo, Nana Okogyeedom Oheneba Ntim-Barimah, recently explained the absence of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, from the National House of Chiefs. According to Nana Oheneba Ntim-Barimah, the Asantehene’s decision stems from a desire to preserve the distinct identity of the Ashanti Kingdom.
In an interview with One Ghana TV, Nana Oheneba Ntim-Barimah pointed out that participating in the National House of Chiefs would imply acceptance of the ‘paramount chief’ title imposed by the British during the colonial era.
He emphasized that this term was introduced by the British to diminish the stature of traditional rulers, reserving the title of ‘king’ exclusively for the British monarch.
Nana Oheneba Ntim-Barimah advocated for a renaming of the National House of Chiefs to the National House of Kings, aligning with the practice in other African countries like South Africa.
This, he believes, would accurately reflect the esteemed status of traditional rulers across the nation.
“We have accepted having a National House of Chief, which should be a National House of Kings. That is why the Otumfuo says he is not a member (of the National House of Chief). People would say, he is being proud but they are protecting the empire.
“We can’t call our monarchs, chief; those of us who served them can be called chiefs… read the Bible, which of the 42 kings were called chiefs. Read your bible, we have King Jehosaphat, King Hazia, King, King Jotham, King David… have you ever seen the word chief in the bible? The Bible recognises every monarch as a King,” he said in Twi.
He added, “Ashantis say Otumfuo, which means a glorious monarch; if you want to translate it to English, it means King of Kings. The ruler of Juaben is a King, the ruler of Kumawu is a King, the ruler of Agogo is a King, the ruler of Offinso is a King. And Otumfuo is the head of all of them so he is a King of Kings”.

During the commemorative anniversary of the 2023 edition of the 31st December Revolution in Accra, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the party to undertake a thorough house cleaning.
He alleges that there is significant decadence within the main opposition party.
Kwetey, speaking at the event, emphasised that the NDC’s challenges surpass those of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“There is real decay and that decay continues to be in the NDC today. So, I don’t want us, the NDC, to pretend that December 31 is simply a day to bash the NPP; (the) NPP is not the issue; the issue is bigger than the NPP.
“The decay even within the NDC must stop with that blazing fire and that is what this business is about,” a charged Kwetey submitted.
He stressed that unless the NDC rids itself of internal decay, the 2024 victory will be meaningless.

“It is in vain if we win power only to continue what we see, only to do some of the things that we are seeing and only to claim we are doing less; that is not enough,” he cautioned.
On the commemoration of the second coming into office of former President Jerry John Rawlings as a military leader on December 31, 1981, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey’s comments have stirred excitement from former Deputy General Secretary Samuel Koku Anyidoho.
In response to Kwetey’s assertion that the NDC needed to address internal issues, Anyidoho suggested that his previous expulsion from the party was a result of making similar calls.
He challenged the current chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the party’s leader, John Dramani Mahama, to take comparable action against Kwetey.
Anyidoho pointed out that Asiedu Nketiah, as the former party scribe, supervised the process that led to his expulsion for alleged anti-party conduct.

Roma coach José Mourinho has clarified that there has been no contact from the Brazil Football Confederation (CBF) regarding the national team job in July 2024. The CBF is actively searching for a full-time manager to succeed interim coach Fernando Diniz, whose contract concludes in the summer.
With Carlo Ancelotti extending his contract with Real Madrid until June 2026, reports suggest that the CBF has approached Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to inquire about the Portuguese coach’s availability.
Despite these reports, Mourinho has explicitly stated that he has not been directly contacted by the CBF at this point in time.
“I don’t know if it’s true that Brazil wants me,” Mourinho said. “They haven’t spoken to me. I asked my agent not to tell me anything about any contacts.”
Ednaldo Rodrigues, upon his reinstatement as CBF president, has identified selecting a full-time national team manager as his initial priority. Reports indicate that São Paulo coach Dorival Júnior is his favoured candidate for the position.
Mourinho, currently under contract with Roma until June 30, has stated that he has not yet made a decision about his future.
Amid reports that Roma are looking for a new manager, the former Chelsea and Manchester United coach said: “I have no reason to think that the [Roma owners] Friedkin family is not honest; I trust the ownership 100%. It doesn’t mean I’ll stay here 100% but it means they’re not looking for someone else behind my back.”
Having joined Roma in the summer of 2021, the 60-year-old Mourinho has rejected coaching offers from both Portugal and Saudi Arabia.
Ghanaian ratafarian student Tyron Marghuy, who became famous for his legal battle with Achimota School over his dreadlocks, made headlines after he posted the results of his West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), where he made 8As studying General Science.
A video capturing the moment he checked his results online with friends went viral on social media, garnering congratulations from many for his academic achievement.
During an interview sighted on (formerly Twitter), on his journey to attaining such a milestone, he revealed that he didn’t use a calculator while writing his favourite subject, Core Maths paper, a statement that has set tongues waging on the internet as some users believe it is a struggle to make a C6 even while they work with a calculator.
“My favourite is math, so, at some point, I didn’t want to mention it. For the core math, I didn’t use a calculator. My thing is that with the way I love math, I want it to be memorable so that one day, if I sit down, I will say, you know, Tyron, you did try your best,” he said.
I chose not to use a calculator for the WASSCE Core Mathematics paper – Tyrone Marhguy
Tyron Marghuy, a Ghanaian student, gained widespread recognition due to his legal battle with Achimota School over his dreadlocks. In 2021, he faced an initial denial of admission to the school, citing his hairstyle as a violation of the institution’s rules.
Marghuy, along with another Rastafarian student, Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea, took legal action against the school, alleging discrimination and violation of their human rights.
The High Court ruled in their favour, mandating the school admit them.
However, Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea eventually secured a scholarship to enrol at Ghana International School, while Tyron Marghuy joined Achimota School.
Remarkably, Marghuy sat for his end-of-term examination mere hours after being admitted, marking a significant chapter in his journey.

CIES Football Observatory now deems the Three Lions star as the most valuable player globally, with his complete potential unlocked on the field.
Following closely is prolific Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, occupying the second spot on the list with a value of €251 million (£216 million/$274 million), boosted by his role in inspiring a treble triumph last season.
Vinicius Junior, Bellingham’s teammate at Santiago Bernabeu, secures the third position with a valuation of €250 million (£215 million/$273 million).
Other notable names in the top five include Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka, valued at €248 million (£214 million/$271 million) and €223 million (£193 million/$243 million), respectively.
Kylian Mbappe has acknowledged the existence of a transfer “agreement” at Paris Saint-Germain, yet clubs such as Real Madrid and Liverpool are eagerly awaiting his decision. The World Cup-winning French international is now in the final six months of his contract with Parc des Princes.
This grants him the freedom to engage in discussions with clubs beyond Ligue 1, with no extension clause activated thus far.
Real Madrid and Liverpool have both been linked to the 25-year-old prolific forward, PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer. Despite being in the final months of his contract, Mbappe, who previously waited until the last moment to sign his latest deal in 2022, has yet to provide clarity on his future plans. This leaves fans and the football community in suspense, with speculation surrounding his potential move intensifying.
Mbappe said after helping PSG to Trophee des Champions glory in a 2-0 victory over Toulouse: “I haven’t made my decision. I didn’t make a choice. But in any case, with the agreement I made with the president this summer, whatever my decision, we managed to protect all the parties.
“And to preserve the serenity of the club for the challenges to come. Which is the most important? When will I decide? I do not know. In 2022, I waited because I didn’t know until May.
“If I know what I’m going to do, I’m not going to hang around. That does not make any sense. But, like I said, the most important thing is to win trophies. The team and the group are looking towards that. My situation, no one talks about it within the club. I just want to help win trophies, like I did today.”
Pressed further on whether being used as a roaming central striker rather than a wide forward will influence his decision to stay at PSG, Mbappe added, “My position? When I speak with Luis Enrique, he tells me that a good player can play in several positions. I think
I’m a good player. Today, I play in the centre. But no matter what position we play, it adapts according to the qualities of the player. Which means that we are not disoriented. I would have no problem performing. Does this freedom on the pitch encourage me to stay at PSG? What is the relationship between the two things? I have always been important. It is a continuation of the evolution that I have had since my arrival in Paris.”
Getafe have officially submitted an appeal in a bid to overturn Mason Greenwood’s red card, seeking to prevent his absence from the team due to suspension.
Greenwood received a red card for dissent just 50 minutes into Getafe’s La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday. The alleged incident involved the attacker uttering “f*ck you” to the referee.
However, Greenwood’s account of the incident contrasts with the official report submitted to the Spanish League.
Getafe has lodged an appeal, as reported by Marca, seeking a swift response to determine the extent of punishment for one of their key players.
The club is currently awaiting clarification on the matter. This player is not the sole Getafe member facing disciplinary issues; teammates Juanmi Latasa and Damian Suarez received red cards in the same match, while Jaime Mata is suspended after accumulating his fifth yellow card of the season.
Mason Greenwood, a standout performer for Getafe this season on loan from Manchester United, has contributed significantly with three goals and four assists in 15 La Liga matches.

Getafe is keen on securing his services permanently, having reportedly submitted a £40 million ($51 million) offer.
Despite interest fromAtletico Madrid and Barcelona, the latter is reportedly hesitant due to past charges of sexual assault and domestic violence against Greenwood, which were later dropped.
The appeal from Getafe, coupled with hopes for a positive outcome, is aimed at swiftly resolving the disciplinary situation, allowing Greenwood to rejoin the squad for upcoming matches.
The club, along with the Englishman, anticipates favourable news regarding the appeal to move forward positively.
In 2023, Abdul Samad Rabiu, the Nigerian billionaire business magnate and second-wealthiest individual, faced a substantial setback as his net worth plunged by US$1.8 billion, resulting in a year-end total of US$5.7 billion.
Forbes reports that Rabiu, who began 2023 with a net worth of US$7.5 billion, experienced this decline due to the impact of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) free float policy.
Despite maintaining his position as Nigeria’s second-richest person, trailing only Aliko Dangote, Rabiu lost his standing on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
This downturn marked a challenging year for Rabiu, highlighting the complexities and uncertainties in the economic landscape.
In 2023, the Nigerian naira experienced a significant decline against the U.S. dollar, marking one of the most substantial depreciations since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) consolidated all segments of the foreign exchange market into the Investors and Exporters window, adopting the willing buyer, willing seller model. Bloomberg forecasts a continued devaluation of the naira in 2024.
Bloomberg’s data revealed a 55-percent depreciation of the naira in 2023, hitting its lowest point on the official NAFEM market at N1,099.05/$ on December 8, 2023.
The currency concluded the year at N907.11/$, earning the title of the worst-performing currency in Africa.
Amidst the naira devaluation policyinitiated by the CBN in June 2023, Rabiu faced a loss amounting to one-third of his wealth within three months.
However, leveraging the surge in the share price of his integrated food business, BUA Foods, he managed to mitigate his wealth loss during the year to $1.8 billion.
This financial strategy showcased Rabiu’s resilience in navigating the challenging economic landscape and adapting to the dynamic market conditions.
Ghana’s official creditors are scheduled to convene on Monday, January 8, to deliberate on the restructuring of approximately $5.4 billion in loans to the country, according to Reuters.
This meeting holds significant importance for Ghana’s ability to secure its next tranche of funding from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The Official Creditor Committee (OCC), co-chaired by the governments of the People’s Republic of China and France, will be central to these discussions. Collectively, these two countries, among other bilateral lenders, account for about 25% of Ghana’s $20 billion external debt slated for restructuring.
The Reuters report suggests that the meeting will primarily focus on reaching a consensus regarding a ‘cut-off date.’ This date is pivotal in determining when new loans from bilateral creditors will no longer be subject to restructuring.
The definition of this date has become a key challenge in Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts.
The report indicates that the external creditors are divided on the exact cut-off date. One group advocates for December 31, 2022, as the cut-off date, citing Ghana’s default earlier in that month.
Conversely, another group pushes for March 24, 2020, the date when the Group of 20 introduced the debt service suspension initiative (DSSI) to assist the world’s poorest countries during the COVID-19 crisis.
The divergence of opinions on the cut-off date underscores the complexities involved in Ghana’s debt rework and highlights the challenges in reaching a unified approach among the country’s official creditors.
The outcome of this meeting will not only impact Ghana’s debt restructuring process but will also have broader implications for its financial standing and international support from institutions like the IMF.
“Ghana is still about cut-off date, but creditors haven’t agreed yet,” a source from Reuters said. “If the cut-off date is agreed upon, that means an agreement on debt restructuring is close.”
In preparation for the OCC meeting on January 8, the Paris Club, consisting ofmajor creditor nations (excluding China), will convene on Friday, according to two sources.
As Sierra Leone’s national team, the Leone Stars, readies itself for a friendly match against the hosts of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), concerns have emerged regarding the training facilities following pictures of the team practicing on a dust-laden, grassless pitch.
Although the Leone Stars did not qualify for the AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast, they perceive this friendly encounter as a vital test ahead of their World Cup qualifiers resuming in March.
The less-than-ideal training conditions have sparked conversations among fans and observers, with images of the team honing their skills on a subpar pitch raising eyebrows.
Despite this setback, the Leone Stars remain focused on their opening game against Guinea-Bissau at the Olympic Stadium in Ebimpe on January 13.
For 2015 AFCON Champions Ivory Coast, this friendly match serves as a strategic opportunity to assess their readiness for the upcoming tournament, where they find themselves grouped with Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau in Group A.
Eager to make a significant impact as hosts and surpass the quarter-final exit from the last edition, the Elephants are determined to showcase their prowess.
The upcoming friendly clash holds added significance as the last encounter between Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast during the 2021 AFCON inCameroon resulted in a 2-2 draw.
Both teams, utilizing this match to fine-tune their strategies, set the stage for an intriguing prelude to the much-anticipated AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.
Amidst discussions about the pitch conditions, the friendly match offers a glimpse into the teams’ preparations and aspirations for success on the continental stage.

Ghanaian tactician James Kwasi Appiah has shed light on his decision to transfer the captaincy fromAsamoah Gyan to Andre Ayew in 2019.
In an interview with Sienu TV, the former Black Stars coach explained that the change was prompted by Gyan’s diminishing physical strength, making it unlikely for him to start games during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Appiah’s decision to entrust the captain’s armband to Andre Ayew was a strategic move aimed at ensuring leadership on the field aligned with the team’s performance goals.
“I knew that his performance could not go to the level I wanted because modern football is not about name and his strength was not that high compared to years back.
“In actual fact, that was the main reason. Looking at the games he had played and personally, I don’t believe I will be the captain and I will be on the bench. The captain should be on the pitch to control things,” Coach Kwesi Appiah said.
The coach went on to reveal that, despite harbouring reservations about Asamoah Gyan’s fitness due to his limited game time in the months leading up to the AFCON, he held firm in his belief that the veteran still possessed valuable contributions.
This conviction led him to include the Ghanaian legend in the squad for the tournament, recognising Gyan’s experience and potential impact, even if not as the team’s captain.
“The reason why I took Gyan to the competition was because Gyan had helped the nation for a period of time and I said if you are not injured, no matter what, I will take you to the tournament and I want you to finish on that note,” Kwesi Appiah shared.

The culinary maestro is set to conclude her impressive feat on Friday, January 5. This ambitious undertaking follows the heightened interest in cook-a-thons sparked by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci’s record-setting achievement in late 2023.

Former Black Stars coach Otto Addo has provided valuable counsel to the Ghanaian national football team as they gear up for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Emphasising the need for a strategic approach, Addo urges the team to prioritise a step-by-step method rather than being fixated solely on clinching the trophy.
Ghana is slated to face formidable adversaries in Group B, including Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, during the AFCON tournament scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, 2023.
Speaking in anticipation of the competition, Otto Addo, who previously helmed the Black Stars during their 2022 World Cup campaign, underscores the importance of cultivating a gradual mindset. As the team navigates through the challenges ahead, Addo’s advice serves as a reminder to focus on the process rather than solely fixating on the end result.
“Step-by-step thinking is far better. If you are aiming too far away, it is difficult to fulfil them because you have to work daily. You have to train hard, you have to win each game, and the rest will come,” he told GTV.
When questioned about Ghana’s chances of breaking the 41-year wait for an AFCON trophy, the former Black Stars boss highlighted the importance of doing the groundwork first.
“It doesn’t make sense to always think about the cup or whatever; you have to do your homework first. There is some work you have to put in to survive the group stage and go to the next stage, and at the end, to win it, it is so much work,” he added.
Addo stressed the importance of instilling the right mentality within the entire Black Stars entourage as they enter the tournament. “Having the correct mindset is crucial in every moment. Even with the goal of winning, it’s essential to understand that sustaining that level requires continuous hard work. Therefore, my advice is for them to approach it game by game,” he emphasised.
Ghana’s questfor AFCON glory has been a prolonged one since their last triumph in Libya in 1982. The journey to end this title drought demands meticulous planning and precise execution, making Addo’s counsel on a focused, game-by-game approach all the more pertinent.
Former Ghana coach James Kwasi Appiah has expressed support for the Black Stars squad chosen for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
On January 1, 2023, current Ghana coach Chris Hughton unveiled the 27-man squad for the continental tournament, with a notable inclusion of only three local players: Abdul Fatawu Hamidu and Jonathan Sowah from Medeama, and Richmond Lamptey from Kotoko.
Star players such as Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Inaki Williams, and Mohammed Kudus were also part of the squad.
Unfortunately, deputy captain Thomas Partey will miss AFCON due to an ongoing hamstring injury, emphasising a cautious approach to his recovery.
James Kwasi Appiah, now the head coach of the Sudan national team, expressed his satisfaction with the selected Black Stars squad in an interview with Sienu TV, as monitored by Footballghana.com.
“I think we’ve got a good squad. I’m in support of the players selected by the coach for the tournament but the only thing I am hoping for is the coach being bold to take decisions as to who should play or who should be on the bench and ones he is able to do that, looking at the list, I think they can compete at any level,” he said.
After the successful accomplishment ofAfua Asantewaa’s Guinness World Record-breaking feat, a wave of Ghanaians has initiated attempts at setting new world records.
Presently, Chef Failatu Abdul Razak is in the midst of her fourth day, striving to break the existing Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon.
Her ambitious goal is to achieve a 120-hour cook-a-thon, taking place at the Modern City Hotel in Tamale.
Additionally, several other Ghanaians have announced their intentions to break world records, creating a buzz on social media. Here’s a compilation of Ghanaians gearing up for Guinness World Record attempts.
1. Dela Gomey
Ghanaian nurse and makeup artist, Dela Gomey, is gearing up to set a newGuinness World Record for the most lipstick applications in 30 seconds.
His ambitious plan involves applying lipstick on five models within the given time frame, aiming to surpass the current record of four applications held by Chinese makeup artist Li Jiaqi.
The event is slated to unfold on January 6, 2024, at the Efa Guest House in Dodowa, Greater Accra Region.
2.
A Ghanaian graduate and passionate reader are gearing up to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest reading-aloud marathon.
His ambitious goal is to read aloud continuously for six days, aiming for a total duration of approximately 145 to 150 hours.
3. Adu Safoa
Ghanaian actress and media personality, Adu Safowaa, has declared her intention to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest individual speech marathon.
She revealed that she has secured official approval from Guinness World Records, expressing confidence in surpassing the current record held by a Nepalese man, which stands at over 90 hours.
Adu Safowaa shared this exciting news across her social media platforms using the hashtag #ADUSAFOWAAH_SPEECH_A_THON.
4. Mawuena Benedictus is also expected to embark on readmania, thus the longest marathon of reading aloud.

Former Ghanaian defender Frimpong Manso has voiced apprehensions regarding theBlack Stars’ group-stage matchups in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Grouped with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in Group B, Manso anticipates challenges and foresees the team encountering difficulties in these contests.
In an interview with Kessben FM, Manso said, “I think we will struggle a bit in the group stage but I believe we will qualify for the next round. The next round is going to be very difficult. Because we are likely to face Ivory Coast or Nigeria, who are strong contenders in the competition.”
Manso believes that the team needs to focus on their performances in the group stage in order to advance to the knockout stages.
“Indeed, that’s where our competition will begin. I remember that in Angola 2010, we kept winning by a small margin, which took us to the final stage of the competition. It’s not going to be easy for us. But I believe we will struggle in the group stage but we will qualify.”
Manso’s apprehensions are reasonable, considering Ghana’s lacklustre showings in recentAfrica Cup of Nations editions.
The team’s recent track record has been less than stellar, and facing formidable opponents like Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in the group stage adds to the challenge.
Nevertheless, with a well-devised strategy and judicious player selection, Ghana possesses the capability to surmount these obstacles and stage a commendable performance in the tournament.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) has recently declared a substantial 40% boost in prize money for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire in 2023.
The victor of the tournament is now set to receive an impressive $7 million, while the runner-up will be awarded $4 million.
There’s also an increase in financial incentives for the semi-finalists and quarter-finalists, with each semi-finalist securing $2.5 million and each quarter-finalist earning $1.3 million.
This significant surge in prize money aims to elevate the competition’s intensity and excitement, making the 2023 AFCON even more captivating for both fans and participants.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe emphasised the organization’s substantial progress in enhancing prize money for major competitions in the past two years.
He expressed confidence that a portion of the prize fund will contribute to football development and benefit all stakeholders, including member associations in need of administrative support.
The augmented prize money for the 2023 AFCON is poised to generate heightened interest and attention for the tournament, which is already highly anticipated in African football.
With elevated stakes and increased financial rewards, fans can anticipate witnessing even greater passion, determination, and thrilling performances from the participating teams.
The 2023 AFCON, commencing on January 13, 2024, is expected to deliver an unforgettable experience for football enthusiasts across the continent and beyond.

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has responded to artiste manager and pundit Mr Logic in their ongoing exchange.
Shatta Wale, in a Facebook live video on January 3, returned to criticise Mr Logic for the accusations made in a previous video. Displaying a significant amount of cash, Shatta Wale accused Mr Logic of being a liar.
He refuted allegations of engaging in a threesome with Moesha Budong, stating that she was just a friend to him.
“Mr Logic is a liar, all he said in the live videos are all lies. He said that I had engaged in a threesome with Moesha Budong, That was a lie, Moesha is just my friend. I have friends like Hajia 4 Real, Moesha Budong and Efia Odo. You can’t destroy my career.
“You guys said you will haunt me. I would rather haunt you! All the things you come out to say are all lies. Everyone in the media knows how Mr Logic is. Do you want to play with Shatta Wale? You said your elders are advising you to calm down, at age 48 you have elders? Refer to them as your mobile money senders.
He urged his fans to refrain from following and paying attention to such entertainment pundits, emphasising that they contribute nothing substantial to the entertainment industry.
“You people should stop listening to stupid boys and girls on these radio stations! They are poor and jobless,” Shatta Wale fired.
The controversy began whenShatta Wale, in a Facebook post on December 29, listed eight individuals he believed were obstructing the growth of the music industry. The individuals mentioned were Akwasi Aboagye, Andy Dosty, Arnold, Ola, Mr Logic, Bullgod, Sally, and Abeiku Santana.
In response to Shatta Wale’s post, Bullgod declared his intention to haunt Shatta Wale like a ghost in a social media post. Shatta Wale, angered by this reaction, lambasted Bullgod and Mr Logic, accusing them of constantly begging for money and engaging in promiscuous activities.
Mr Logic, in his reply to Shatta Wale, denied the claims and asserted that he was the one who helped Shatta Wale when he was broke and homeless.
He further accused Shatta Wale of sending nude pictures to his ex-partner’s girlfriend, stealing the idea of “Dancehall King” from him, spreading false rumours about Jupita, engaging in a threesome with Moesha Budong, and mistreating his girlfriend, Shatta Michy. Mr Logic concluded by labelling Shatta Wale as a liar and a disgrace to the music industry.
This incident is not Shatta Wale’s first clash with media personalities. In September, he had a spat with industry pundit Ola Michael after the latter suggested that Shatta did not deserve a diplomatic passport due to his attitude.
Shatta Wale responded by hurling insults at Ola Michael and even composing a diss song aimed at him.
Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons seems to have supported the assertion made by former President John Dramani Mahama regarding an increase in examination malpractices in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) under the current government.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Mahama, faced criticism, particularly from supporters of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, after expressing concerns about the credibility of the 2023 WASSCE results. His concerns stemmed from the significant number of passes recorded.
Mahama raised issues related to lax invigilation and teacher involvement in student cheating, warning about potential consequences for the country’s educational system. The comments received attention and were met with criticism from some quarters of the public.
“In many places, they let the children cheat. You go to places, and the teachers are conniving with the students to cheat. The effect will be seen later,” Mahama said.
On whether exam cheating is worsening in Ghana, why aren't education stakeholders simply plotting the trends like they do in Nigeria (see attached)? We know that cancellations for malpractice in Ghana have increased from 0.13% of results in 2014 to 0.81% in 2023 (600% increase). pic.twitter.com/QenReckPiK
Bright Simons has presented data to support the claim that examination malpractice has risen under the current administration.
In a post on X dated January 4, 2024, Simons shared statistics indicating an increase in the percentage of cancelled West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers during the current government’s tenure.
According to the figures provided, less than 0.2% of WASSCE papers were cancelled in 2014. However, in 2023, over 0.8% of WASSCE papers were cancelled.
Simons highlighted that this represents approximately a 600% increase in paper cancellations attributed to cheating during WASSCE examinations.
“On whether exam cheating is worsening in Ghana, why aren’t education stakeholders simply plotting the trends like they do in Nigeria (see attached)?
Hilda Baci’s cook-a-thon seems to have inspired several others to attempt breaking and setting new records for the Guinness World Records (GWR).
The current attempt by Northern Region’s Chef Faila has earned the admiration of many, including Nigerians. An X user, while lauding Chef Faila’s skills in cooking, has called out Hilda Baci to go to Ghana to eat “jollof to learn sense,” as Ghana jollof “dey give” sense.
He said this while pointing his hands to a TV screen that was broadcasting the Ghanaian chef stirring a colourful and bright-looking jollof, he exclaimed in pidgin:
“I tell you before that Ghana rice sweet pass Nigerian rice times 100. See am, look am, you dey see am, oh my goodness, see jollof ruice, Hilda see Jollof Rice; see Hilda! Hilda, I say see Jollof rice wey be like say Ghanaian chef dey cook”.
The disappointed young man went further to express his desire to have a taste of the meal but for distance.
Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum, the Ghanaian who aimed to break the Guinness World Record (GWR), shared that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia procured medication to expedite the recovery of her lost voice during the Sing-A-Thon.
During an interview on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed, Madam Asantewaa highlighted that the presence of the Vice President, along with the support of many other Ghanaians, served as a significant motivation that kept her going.
“All that was running through my head was, was he watching at home? Was he watching me? Why did he come there? I had these conversations on my mind.
“Interestingly, he was watching and monitoring and realised that I had lost my voice so he actually ordered drugs for me. Only for the drugs to arrive when I had finished the attempt.
“So he sent me the drugs, which I have with me. The drug was the fastest remedy to have healed my voice to the point that I lost it,” she narrated.
“Everybody is involved; there was no escape route because this was something I needed to do for Ghana and the unity that it brought. The love, even though he (Vice President Bawumia) was there, I think I saw many more politicians,” she added.
Mrs. Asantewaa Aduonum further stated that there was nothing like politics during theSing-A-Thon, and Ghanaians were excited about unity.
A video has surfaced featuring popular Ghanaian media personality and marriage counsellor, Maame Yeboah Asiedu, discussing her stance on divorce.
The video, from 2020, reveals her belief that divorce should not be the immediate solution to marital challenges.
At that time, she emphasised the importance of working on marriages and suggested that divorce should only be considered when all other options have been thoroughly explored.
The emergence of this video comes amid speculation and allegations regarding her own divorce and subsequent remarriage.
“I don’t believe in divorce; I believe in working out marriages. God has his reasons for putting you in a marriage. Because, come what may, you should be able to work at it.
“Divorce is not an option for me; that is why I always advise people to marry the right people. But if the marriage deteriorates to the point that they can’t go further, then they can understand,” he said.
Maame Yeboah further said that marriages should be unions between mature individuals and should be embarked upon with the right mindset.
“Marriage is for the mature mind. You shouldn’t go into marriage with the mindset that you are a star or a better person than your partner. You will get it all wrong. You are marrying your husband as a normal person and he is marrying you as a normal person.
“Marriage is about one’s mindset; if you have the mindset that you are going to test the waters, it won’t end well.
Maame Yeboah Asiedu has recently addressed the reasons behind her divorce from her previous husband and subsequent remarriage within a year.
Ghanaian seeking to set the world record for the longest singing marathon, Afua Asantewaa, shared details about a harrowing experience she faced a day before embarking on her Guinness World Record challenge.
In her account, she revealed that armed robbers invaded her home at midnight on Sunday, December 24, 2023, just before the start of her sing-a-thon.
Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the robbers didn’t take valuable items like phones and laptops. Instead, they only took her husband’s deodorant and spray.
During an interview with GhOne TV, Afua Asantewaa explained that the traumatic incident affected her psychologically, impacting the initial day of her sing-a-thon challenge.
“Monday, before the actual sing-a-thon began, we were attacked in the night by robbers (armed men) in our house. We couldn’t get in. And then, I think, the Wednesday before, I started on Sunday too. When we got home, they had broken into our home. But we don’t know how they got in; they just scattered all our stuff.

“They didn’t take the money; they didn’t take anything. All they took was my husband’s deodorant and spray. There were laptops, there was money, and they didn’t take anything. They just came to mess the place up. That was the Wednesday before I started. So we had to leave home and then go lodge in a hotel and all that. So after the sing-a-thon, we couldn’t have gone back home.
We had to lodge in a hotel.”
When asked how it affected her psychologically, she retorted, “Thursday was terrible. Anybody who saw me on Thursday would have said somewhere that I’m stressed already. But they didn’t know what was happening to me. Because it was Wednesday night, we couldn’t sleep in our bedroom. We slept in the living room.”
Afua Asantewaa concluded herGuinness World Record ‘singathon’ on Friday, December 29, 2023, having achieved an impressive 126 hours, surpassing the previous 105-hour record.
The determination of whether she officially broke the record will depend on the review conducted by the Guinness World Record team.
Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, led by Russia, plan to convene their first Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC) of 2024 in early February, although the specific date has not yet been determined, according to three sources within the alliance.
These meetings, held every two months, serve to monitor the implementation of production agreements.
The JMMC includes key countries such as Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In its last full ministerial meeting on November 30, OPEC agreed to voluntary output cuts of approximately 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd) for the current quarter, with Saudi Arabia extending its existing voluntary cut.
The upcoming February meeting will assess the deal’s implementation in January. Angola recently announced its departure from OPEC, citing a focus on membership status rather than serving the group’s business interests.
If Angola follows through with its exit in January 2024, it will be the third country to leave OPEC, following Ecuador in 2020 and Qatar in 2019.
Reports suggest that the decision is influenced by disagreements with Saudi Arabia, which is perceived to be out of touch with global corporate, financial, and political developments.
Media personality and influencer Nana Aba Anamoah criticised theGhana Football Association (GFA) amid reports of the senior national team struggling to secure a standard pitch for their pre-African Cup of Nations (AFCON) camp.
“The FA should be ashamed that they do not own a training facility befitting our national teams,” she tweeted on January 3, 2023.
Social media users widely supported her stance.
Earlier in the day, Ghanasoccernet.com reported that Ghana coach Chris Hughton and his backroom staff expressed frustration and anger over the poor camping facilities in the country.
The players were also dissatisfied with the state of the training pitch and overall conditions in the camp, just 11 days before the start of the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
The team had initially planned to train at the Baba Yara Stadium but changed to the privately owned Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex due to the unsuitability of the national facility upon inspection by the technical team.
Despite the setback, the Black Stars remain dedicated to their goal of preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The challenges posed by the suboptimal pitch conditions have, however, heightened the technical team’s disappointment, emphasising the importance of suitable training environments for optimal performance in the upcoming tournament.
An exciting moment unfolded when Ghanaian actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, met with Afua Asantewaa, the Ghanaian attempting to break the sing-a-thon record, during a show on United Television (UTV).
LilWin commended Afua Asantewaa and her team for successfully taking on the sing-a-thon challenge without any setbacks and for involving the general public.
During the encounter, LilWin playfully questioned Afua Asantewaa about why she didn’t include any of his songs in the sing-a-thon that had captured the nation’s attention.
In response, Afua Asantewaa explained that she had to omit some of the initially selected songs during the final rehearsal of the main contest because they were straining her voice.
This exchange occurred on the UTV ‘Day With Celebrities’ program, where celebrities and prominent personalities take on various roles on TV, including journalism.
“You [Afua Asanteewaa] is the one that made everybody, from celebrities to political leaders and others, support you for the first time. It means you are blessed. Secondly, I would like to thank your team, especially your medical doctors.
“They are God-fearing looking at the way they took care of your feeding and making sure you don’t endanger your health for the sake of the contest. But why didn’t you sing my song? I have gospel songs; I have morale songs.”
Afua Asantewaa then responded, “I had your song on my list; I can even show it to you. However, during the final rehearsal, some of the songs were straining my voice. Also, some of the songs involve my emotions a lot so by the time I end, it would seem like a concert.”
Afua Asantewaa concluded herGuinness World Record ‘singathon’ journey on Friday, December 29, 2023, having achieved an impressive 126 hours, surpassing the existing 105-hour record. The determination of whether she will officially be recognised for breaking the record awaits review by the Guinness World Record team.
Popular Ghanaianrapper Okyeame Kwame has talked candidly about his experiences celebrating Christmas with his wife and kids, who are Jehovah Witnesses and don’t commemorate the holiday.
Okyeame Kwame stated in a TV3 interview that he respects his family’s religious convictions and does not coerce them into participating in his celebrations.
He stated that he did not want to renegotiate his decision to allow his children to follow their mother’s beliefs at this time because he made it before he married her.
“My family, my wife, and my children are complete individuals. Independent of what I like and what I don’t like. So the beauty of that is the diversity or the unity in that diversity where we all let each other be.
“So you celebrate this one. Go ahead and do it. It’s not about forcing people to like what you like. After all, the fewer, the merrier,” he said.
Kwame also said that he does not see celebrating Christmas as a big deal and that he focuses more on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ than on his birth or death.
“Plus, celebrating Christmas or not is not consequential. It’s not about the death or the birth for me; it’s more about the life; it’s more about the forgiveness; it’s more about the service; it’s more about the kindness. It’s all about enlightenment and being kind. I look at the life of Christ and the quality of life. Can I be Christlike? That is where my focus is,” he said.
Well-known in Ghana as a rapper and performer, Okyeame Kwame is best known for hits like “Woara,” “Woman,” and “Made in Ghana.”
In addition, he is an activist and a philanthropist.
Real Betis manager Manuel Pelligrini says the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) must be respected by European clubs.
The decision to release players for the tournament during the winter, which is a crucial time of the season, has become an issue of huge debate between clubs and countries.
Pelligrini, who worked with 2015 AFCON winner Yaya Toure, will lose Youssouf Sabaly of Senegal and Morocco duo Chadi Riad and EZ Abde to the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast.
The seasoned manager, however, says he is proud of them for representing their countries, so he is not concerned about their absence.
However, the veteran manager is not worried by their absence, as he explains his pride in representing their nations.
“ I don’t have all the information on this subject (whether it should happen in the winter or not). I think I’ve always said it: I’m completely a supporter of the national teams. Nations like to see their selection play.
“The national teams or local football teams of each country must have their own space (competition time),” he said, as quoted by Wiw Sport.
“In Africa, we have the CAN in January. Every club that recruits African footballers therefore knows that it cannot count on them during this CAN period,” he added.
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini had disclosed why his tenure at Real Madrid was never going to be successful.
The Chilean manager managed the Los Blancos for one season, where he went trophyless despite having a star-studded squad. The 70-year-old finished second in the 2009/2010 campaign in La Liga despite getting 96 points.
They lost the title to Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, who beat them twice that season.

Kaakie departed Ghana’s borders in 2018 to pursue her education in the United States.
This came about following the termination of her contract with the High-Grade family.
However, she revealed in an interview on Accra’s 3FM that she was going back to the scene.
According to Kakie, she has the backing of her spouse and other prominent figures in the music industry, and she is confident that she will eventually establish her own position.
“Actually I came in purposely…So by God’s grace, I’m coming back to the scene, and we are working hard. I haven’t just been silent.
“I have been working behind the scenes and I haven’t been alone. I’ve had genuine support from my husband; he’s been pushing me, and I’ve also metpeople that were in the scene,” she said on Accra-based 3Fm.
The sports network, owned by Multichoice, announced that they won’t be airing the tournament taking place in Ivory Coast from January to February.
The broadcasting rights were awarded to a Togo-based broadcaster instead.
Despite being a reliable broadcaster of African competitions in the past, SuperSport has shown less interest in showcasing Caf competitions lately.
They also declined to air the newly launched African Football League, where Mamelodi Sundowns emerged as the inaugural champions.
On January 3, Multichoice issued a statement revealing their inability to secure broadcasting rights for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The rights were awarded to Togo’s New World TV by Caf.
Caf President Patrice Motsepe praised the agreement as a historic mega deal, emphasising its significance as the largest investment by a Pan-African broadcaster in Caf’s history.
Motsepe expressed pride in partnering with New World TV, recognising its global competitiveness and innovation in adapting to modern football audience demands.
