The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has successfully dismantled a significant foreign currency counterfeiting syndicate operating in both Accra and the commercial hub of Tema.
In a concise update shared on social media on December 15, the OSP reported the seizure of a substantial sum totaling US$40 million.
The operation, conducted under the category ‘Prevention of Corruption’ with the subheading ‘Disruption of Foreign Currency Manufacturing Network,’ marked a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to combat financial malfeasance.
âOSP has disrupted a syndicate involved in the production of a substantial amount of counterfeited foreign currency. Seizures were made in two warehouses located in Accra and Tema, where a substantial amount of counterfeited forty million dollars ($40,000,000.00) was discovered concealed in steel trunks.”
Other corruption prevention cases the OSP is involved in were also part of the post that had the caption: “Since August 2021, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (#OSP) has been actively engaged in a range of activities as part of its comprehensive fourfold mandate, which includes investigations, prosecution, asset recovery and management, and the prevention of corruption.”

Presidential Staffer Dennis Miracle accused Peace FM’s morning show (Kokrokoo) host Kwame Sefa Kaye, popularly referred to as the ‘Chairman General’ , of being unfair to him during a discussion on the controversial lithium deal signed by the government.
This comes after the two were enveloped in a heated argument over the credibility of the said deal.
Miracle, who appeared unsatisfied with the airtime given him to give his submissions as against that of People’s National Convention (PNC) former secretary Atik Mohammed , went on to accuse Sefa Kaye of unfairness.

Former PNC General Secretary, Atik Mohammed, has added his voice to the ditch of the deal as it lacks transparency.
Speaking on Kwame Sefa Kayeâs Kokrokoo morning show on Peace FM, Atik questioned the credibility of the deal after presenting the same two letters of approval of recommendations signed by the land minister bearing different dates and also a mining lease that was signed on the same day, a situation he deems highly impractical.
He said, âWe are not against the lithium mining lease for it is the future, but in its current form, we should trash it. This is an unacceptable lease that has to be rejected.â.
As mandated by the constitution, according to Article 703, Atik detailed that an entity that seeks to engage in such mining activities is expected to secure a letter of approval or recommendation from the lands minister after it has been approved by the minerals commission, after which the entity is expected to respond and make some payments after acceptance.
But in this case, everything appears to have happened on the same day, evidently from the date on the mining lease and the ministerâs approval letter.
He said, âIf you look at the approval for the recommendation letter signed by the lands minister, it bears the same date as the mining lease was signed, and it is not practicable. Unless there’s someone somewhere who will say I’m doing everything for you, you go and sort the rest out, which is quite unpracticable

Electoral Commission (EC) has announced plans to enhance transparency in the 2024 General Election by displaying results from various polling stations on a dedicated online platform.
Mrs. Jane Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, revealed this initiative during a stakeholder meeting organized by the National Peace Council at Peduase in the Eastern Region.
The meeting aimed to assess events after the 2020 General election and prepare for the upcoming 2024 General Election.
As part of this transparency effort, the EC intends to publish scanned, signed pink sheets on the online portal, providing the public with real-time access to polling station results.
Mrs. Mensa emphasised that this decision is geared towards fostering inclusion and actively involving citizens in the electoral process.
âWe intend to display the results from the polling station on a dedicated portal. This proposal aligns with the EU Observer Mission recommendation. For the first time in our history, we posted results from the 16 Regions and 275 constituencies in real time.
âThis time around, we plan to display the scanned, signed pink sheets on a dedicated portal. We are confident that this arrangement will promote transparency and engender further trust and confidence in our electoral processes,â she said.
EC to close polls at 3pm
The Electoral Commission (EC) has put forward a proposal to conclude polling activities by 15:00 hours in an effort to facilitate the counting process in broad daylight, thus contributing to increased transparency.
This decision is based on observations from the 2020 Election, where approximately 70 percent of polling centres were reportedly vacant by 13:00 hours.
The EC attributed this trend to the establishment of multiple polling centres, which expedited the voting process.
Mrs. Jane Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, outlined the intention to create numerous polling centres with each having no more than 500 voters to streamline the voting duration.
This strategy, implemented in the last election, resulted in voters spending no more than five minutes casting their votes due to the increased number of voting centres. The overarching goal is to enhance efficiency and transparency in the electoral process.
âWe are convinced that closing the polls at 3pm will enable counting and collating to take place in broad daylight and promote the needed transparency and orderliness we so desire.
âWe trust that our Parliament will support this drive to ensure greater transparency and orderliness in our electoral process,â Mrs Mensa said.

FIFA recently faced a setback in a London court ruling that jeopardises its global regulations. Agents in Europe have contested the rules through legal actions, leading to a delay in their implementation, and England continues to dominate the multi-billion-dollar player transfer market, as per FIFA’s latest research.
FIFA said English clubs were “the number one spenders by a long shot” in 2023, with combined spending of more than $280 million on agent commissions in transfers between two clubs in different countries. Money from player transfers between two clubs in the same country does not count in the FIFA numbers.
The total expenditure on agents witnessed a 42% increase in 2022, surpassing the previous peak of $654 million in 2019 by more than one-third.
Italian clubs led the way, with a collective spending of $115.7 million.
Notably, Saudi Arabian clubs, backed by a state-sponsored recruitment initiative, spent $86 million on agents, aiming to enhance their domestic league with high-profile signings like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema.
FIFA highlighted 224 cases where the agent service fee exceeded $1 million, constituting almost 69% of the total expenditure. In the majority of deals, agents received fees ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.
Clubs in North and Central America spent $5.4 million across 20 transfers, while African clubs spent less than $200,000, according to FIFA.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been exonerated from a charge by the Football Association (FA) in relation to comments he made after the team’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United last month.
Arteta expressed his frustration over the decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s goal, despite three VAR checks for potential infractions such as the ball going out of play, a foul, and an offside in the build-up.

In the written reasons accompanying the decision, Arteta is described as an “impressive witness” who successfully argued his comments focused on a wider frustration with the VAR process rather than targeting a match official.
It read, “[In the post-match interviews], MA expressed his frustration at the VAR decision and the standard of refereeing and VAR decision-making in the Premier League.
“He did not descend into language which insulted or cast aspersions about particular officials, nor to language which reflected anything other than his reasonably held view, supported by others, that VAR decision-making and officiating standards require improvement.’”

“The word ‘disgrace’ used by MA in the Interviews ‘has a very similar spelling and pronunciation to the Spanish ‘desgracia’ ⌠the Spanish word has connotations of misfortune, tragedy or bad luck rather than the connotations of the English equivalent, which suggest contempt, dishonour or disrespect,” continued the written reasons.
“While the English meaning may lead to interpretations of abuse or insult, this was not the intended meaning of the comments.”
Arteta was also said to have made “considerable efforts that he has made in the past [and continues to make] to work with other stakeholders [including the PGMOL and the Chief Refereeing Officer] in the pursuit of improving the standards of match officiating [including VAR officiating] in the Premier League” and that he had “frustration that such efforts [on his part and by others] had ‘failed to produce any meaningful improvements’ in those standards.”

Ghana has witnessed a continued decline in its inflation rate for the fourth consecutive month, reaching 26.4% in November.Â
This marks a notable 8.8-percentage-point decrease from the 35.2% recorded in October 2023.
The month-on-month reduction of 8.8% stands as the most significant drop in the past 13 months in the country, primarily attributed to a decrease in food inflation.
Notably, items such as fish, other seafood, water, and soft drinks experienced deflation during this period.
According to the recently released Consumer Price Index (CPI) data on December 14, year-on-year food inflation was reported at 32.2%, while non-food inflation stood at 21.7%.
Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the Government Statistician, emphasised the regional disparities in inflation rates, pointing out that the national inflation rate’s 19-month low was influenced by base-effect comparisons.
Breaking down the regional data, the Western region recorded the highest inflation rate at 39.8%, while the Greater Accra region registered the lowest inflation rate at 19.8%.Â
The overall trend suggests positive economic development with a significant decline in inflation rates, particularly in the food sector, contributing to the nation’s economic stability.
Since 2022, Ghana has grappled with persistently high inflation, primarily attributed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the devaluation of the cedi, rising fuel costs, and supply shocks in the agricultural sector.
Ghana experienced a peak in its inflation rate, reaching an alarming 53.6% in January 2023, positioning it as the second-highest in Africa, following Zimbabwe.

Former Minister of Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, has strongly criticised the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for donating 200 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service.Â
On Monday, December 11, 2023, ECG donated these bikes to the Ghana Police Service as part of ECG’s initiative to enhance police operations nationwide.
Pru East MP and Member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, condemned the gesture, deeming it highly irresponsible on the part of ECG given the companyâs indebtedness to Independent Power Producers.
On his part, ECG âhas no businessâ taking on the governmentâs responsibility of providing logistics to the power producers.
âI read with shock on Tuesday that the Electricity Company of Ghana had donated 200 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service. Ordinarily, any such donation would have attracted my approval.
âBut with this particular one, ECG has no business taking over the responsibility of the state to provide logistics for the Ghana Police. ECG is in debt for billions of cedis,â he fumed.
He went on to lambast ECG over its indebtedness to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and urged the Ministers of Energy and State Enterprises to investigate the âirresponsibleâ act of ECG for appropriate action.
“Indeed, 2 weeks ago, the Minister of Finance had to intervene to stop Sonon Asorgli from shutting down because of ECGâs indebtedness to IPPs.
For an entity that cannot pay its indebtedness, they have no business buying motors for the Ghana Police.
â I call on the Ministers of Energy and State Enterprises to call the ECG management to book.â
ECG, the countryâs main power utility, buys electricity from various generation companies, including Independent Power Producers (IPPs), and distributes it to consumers.
However, the ECG has been unable to pay for the full amount of power it purchases from the IPPs, resulting in a huge debt of about $1.4 billion as of last month.
Meanwhile,in July this year, Independent Power Producers threatened a power cut to the national grid if the government did not pay at least 30% of the outstanding debtâa move that was expected to cause a major national crisis or even re-introduce the country to âdumsorâ but for the intervention of the finance minister.
This debt has affected the operations and sustainability of the IPPs, who control 50% of the country’s generation mix
They have also rejected any proposal to restructure the debt, saying that they need to repay their lenders and suppliers
The government and the ECG have been trying to address the debt issue and prevent power cuts by implementing various measures such as the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, the Energy Sector Recovery Programme, and the Energy Sector Levy Act.
NDCâs Sammy Gyamfi has lambasted the government over its âcelebrationâ of the â10% royaltyâ under the controversiallithium deal.
His remarks come after the government signed a deal with Barari DV Ghana Ltd., a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Ltd. for the exploitation of lithium in the Ewoyaa area of the Central Region for a period of 15 years, starting next year, 2024.
Amid the fierce resistance the government has faced over the transparency of the deal, among others, the government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources have defended the deal, saying that it is one of the best in the world as it stands to offer an unprecedented 10% royalty and 19% state participation in the mining company.
However, Sammy Gyamfi, in a statement explaining the deal and at the same time expressing his disapproval of it, labelled the governmentâs pride in the’meager’ ‘ benefit as a âcelebration of mediocrity.
âBeyond that, strict provisions on tax compliance and enforcement are required to ensure that the state is not cheated through transfer pricing and creative accounting. It is important to make the point that the governmentâs boastful claim about securing a 10% royalty under the deal is a celebration of mediocrity,â the statement said.
The NDC argues that, despite the government’s assertion that Barari DV will be subject to a 35% corporate tax rate, there is a crucial need for clarity regarding the company’s status and a comprehensive disclosure of concessions granted.
According to the NDC, the Mining Lease stipulates that Barari DV should pay taxes in adherence to Ghana’s mining laws, creating room for ambiguity and speculation.Â
The NDC’s concerns centre around the need for transparency and accountability in the lithium deal, urging the government to provide clear and unambiguous information to address uncertainties and ensure public trust in the agreement.
âIt is therefore imperative for government to clarify the status and tax obligations of Barari DV and its parent company. Ghanaians deserve to know whether or not the company is a free zone company and why a mining company should be accorded free zone status.
âGhanaians deserve to know all the concessions the government is giving the company (Barari DV/Atlantic Lithium) for a holistic assessment of the benefits of the deal.
âWhat the Mining Lease expressly provides is that Barari DV shall pay taxes in accordance with the mining laws of Ghana, without more. We are, however, told that the company is registered under theGhana Free Zones Authority and is entitled to a 10-year tax holiday, when such tax concessions are ordinarily not granted to mining companies in the country. This, if true, will deprive the country of corporate taxes during the first ten years of the Ewoyaa Lithium Project.Â
