A 29-year-old pharmacist has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the Volta River Authority Hospital in Aboadze, Western Region, after allegedly being injected with the wrong drugs.
The pharmacist, seeking GH12 million in damages, claims to have suffered mental and physical incapacitation due to the administration of IM Atracurium 50mg instead of Antigen D.
However, there are conflicting reports, with some suggesting that the pharmacist rejected the prescribed medicine as it was deemed expensive and opted for drugs from her workplace, which were administered by a nurse without proper verification.
“VRA hospital prescribed a drug she needed. She said theirs was too expensive, so she’ll get it from the hospital she works at instead. She got someone to bring the drug from her hospital.
“The wrong drug was sent to her. She didn’t check. She kept the drug in her hospital fridge and told no doctor or nurse on duty about it.
“In the evening, after the shift change, a VRA nurse who attends the same church as her was on duty. She told the nurse to take the drug from the fridge and inject her with it. The nurse didn’t check the drug either. Possibly presumed she was a pharmacist and knew what she needed.
“Sometime after the injection, she began to have seizures. She ended up in her current state. The hospital took care of her bills & sacked the nurse. She later returned to sue the hospital for using the wrong drug she brought to them,” the second account said.
Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has urged the government to prioritise enhancing the conditions of service for its members, aligning them with the demands of their profession.
The Association has specifically called for measures to guarantee the well-being and security of its members, both during and after their active service.
During the 65th General Meeting of the Association on Monday, Dr. Frank Serebour, the President of GMA, stressed the importance of shielding members from workplace hazards and ensuring compensation for such incidents.
“Our pensions must be secured after we have sacrificed our bodies, minds, and souls in our service. We require adequate logistics and an enabling environment to maintain our mental and physical well-being so that we can effectively care for the population.
“Retirement on a full salary is not an unreasonable demand. The vehicle importation tax waiver for health workers should be reinstated immediately.”
“We should not be made to pay the ultimate price of losing our lives and homes in our quest to care for the vulnerable. Someone must care for the health worker. Our reward is not in heaven but here on planet Earth. What we are asking for is not an impossibility. We appreciate some urgency from the FWSC,” he stated.
Dr. Serebour emphasised that any delays in improving working conditions for doctors would not be acceptable.
He further underscored that the association would appreciate the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission expeditiously resolving the matter by advocating for a salary increase, given that it has been overdue.
“Any delays will not be tolerated, and we will demand the full implementation of any agreed-upon terms to be effective in January 2024. Even as we negotiate, the existing conditions of service are still in force; hence, the implementation of any aspect of the document that becomes due will be demanded by the GMA, as was done for the non-basic allowance,” Dr Serebour added.
The Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei Asare, acknowledged that efforts are underway to address the association’s demands.
“I want to assure you that we have made some progress and very soon the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission will be calling a meeting to kick-start the operationalization of your new conditions of service,” she stated.

On the clubs, he added, “Not only the GFA, but all the clubs playing in the Premiership must own stadiums or venues good enough to host a match.”
He suggested that clubs that lack funds should apply for loans from banks.
“If I have my way, every club that plays in the Premier League must demonstrate that they have their own stadium. If they don’t have the money, they can team up with the banks for loans to be deducted from their gate proceeds for a number of years.”

Doctors at the Kavaja Hospital in Albania have revealed that Ghanaian footballer Raphael Dwamena passed away before the ambulance transporting him reached the hospital.

The distressing incident occurred in the 24th minute of the game when Dwamena collapsed on the pitch. The sudden and unattended fall was captured on video.
Despite immediate efforts from teammates and medical professionals, the 28-year-old striker could not be revived and succumbed to the situation.
Addressing the unfortunate incident, Dr. Lala from Kavaja Hospital explained that Dwamena was already deceased upon his arrival at the hospital.
“The patient came to Kavaja Hospital in the ‘black code,’ indicating exitus (the medical term for death), without vital parameters, without tension, without breathing, without cardiac activity. There was no activity in the EKG,” detailed Dr. Lala.

Deputy Majority Leader AlexanderKwamena Afenyo-Markin has justified the absence of National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah from Parliament.
Kan-Dapaah was summoned to address the House regarding military attacks in the Upper East Region.
Afenyo-Markin claimed the issue was resolved with the release of eight individuals arrested in connection with the incident, rendering further parliamentary discussion unnecessary.
The minister was expected to brief lawmakers on November 10, 2023, but did not attend, prompting questions about his appearance before the House.
“Leadership asked me to engage the National Security Minister, and I came to report the outcome of the engagement, which led to the National Security Ministry releasing the gentlemen who were in custody.
“I must explain here that at the time I was sent here, the court had remanded them for two weeks. Upon all considerations, National Security, through its prosecutor, applied for rescission of the said order, which the court granted.
“And the same day, the government ensured that all those gentlemen were sent to Garu and handed over to their families.

Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has undertaken an ambitious initiative to construct a 200-bed paediatric centre as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.
To fund the construction of the paediatric centre, the hospital plans to utilise proceeds generated from various anniversary activities.
While the hospital currently operates a paediatric unit, the existing facility is deemed insufficient to accommodate the growing number of paediatric patients, necessitating the establishment of a modern and state-of-the-art paediatric centre.
Dr. Atik Adam, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, explained in an interview in Tamale that, as part of the fundraising strategy for the project, the hospital will conduct fundraising activities to seek support from both individuals and corporate entities.
“We’ll be 50 years old next year [2024] and we intend to use funds we generate from our celebration, including a fundraiser program, for the construction of the paediatric centre,” he said.
“We are growing and so we need to expand to meet the growing number of patients we receive daily. As we have currently, the numbers have outgrown our paediatric unit, and so we need to expand, and with the support of the general public, we’ll be able to embark on this project successfully,” he added.
More than 20 staff members of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) are facing disciplinary action for a range of offenses, as revealed by the acting CEO during the launch of the hospital’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.
The acting CEO disclosed that over the past three months, the hospital has initiated disciplinary procedures against over 20 staff members for offences such as extorting money from clients and absenteeism, among other misconducts.
“In addition, to improve quality service delivery, management has taken discipline among staff very seriously, with staff being held accountable for their actions. More than twenty staff, including senior and junior doctors, nurses, and other cadres of staff, have undergone various disciplinary procedures over the past three months for various offences, including extortion of money from clients, absenteeism from work, etc,” he noted.
Touching on the successes of the hospital over the past 50 years, Dr. Atik said that as the premier health facility in Northern Ghana, it has introduced several specialist services such as endoscopy and dialysis services, neurology and neurological services, and cardiology.
He said “To meet the complex and wide range of health needs within its catchment area, the hospital, over the past couple of years, has added on to the bouquet of services it provides with the introduction of specialties and sub-specialties such as endoscopy and dialysis services, neurology and neurosurgical services, cardiology, endocrinology and oncology (including paediatric oncology).
“Existing services such as dental care, drugs, and pharmaceuticals; oxygen supply; trauma and orthopaedics; infectious disease care and diagnostics, including blood services; CT scans; ultrasound scans; echocardiography; and speech therapy have all been expanded and enhanced.”
Ya Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, emphasised the significance of strong, courageous, and strict leadership in curbing acts of indiscipline. He noted that such leadership had been lacking at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) for an extended period.

Ghanaian Afrobeat singer and songwriter, Jackline Acheampong, popularly known as Gyakie, has disclosed that her initial career aspiration was to become an entrepreneur, not a musician.

There are emerging reports indicating that the Ghanaian government has opposed the proposed termination of Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton by the Ghana Football Association.
On Thursday, November 9, 2023, Asaase Radio disclosed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was contemplating dismissing Hughton during its Executive Council meeting.
The decision was allegedly prompted by the GFA’s dissatisfaction with Hughton’s performance and doubts about his ability to secure victories for Ghana in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros.
However, the removal of Hughton required government approval, as the government is responsible for the compensation of the technical team.
Multiple reports suggest that the government has rejected the GFA’s decision to terminate the coach.
Sports journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai wrote on X, “Understand the Sports Minister met Cabinet on Wednesday. There is no green light on Chris’s sacking from the government’s angle. We await what will happen tomorrow.”
Another sports journalist, Fentuo Tahiru, also wrote on X that a top government official had said, “Chris Hughton is not going anywhere.”

According to Asaase Radio’s report, in the event of Hughton’s dismissal, George Boateng would have assumed the role of interim head coach.
Despite the government’s disapproval of the proposed terminationof the Black Stars coach, sports journalist Saddick Adams asserted that a source within the GFA indicated that the scheduled meeting of the Executive Council of the FA would proceed as planned.
“A Ghana FA top official says they indeed have a meeting tomorrow but there’s no Chris Hughton sacking on the agenda. To the best of their knowledge, they may even invite Chris, possibly on his squad and prepare the team ahead of the two WCQs this month. In response to the reports on social media, GFA president Kurt Okraku also made a statement on Facebook claiming that the reports are false. “Lies is becoming the order of the day in the media space!!!” he wrote.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has yet again supervised the distribution of a hundred and thirty-nine (139) laptops to a select number of students at the University of Ghana as part of her ‘One Student, One Laptop Initiative’ (1S1L).
This contributes to the total count of over 300 laptops distributed to recipients since the inaugural distribution exercise in August 2022.
Earlier events included two separate ceremonies, with 50 laptops given to students in the Department of Computer Science and an additional 75 presented to graduate students by the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC).
The very recent distribution, which was held at the Cedi Conference Centre on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, saw delegates from the University of Ghana in attendance.
Addressing the event participants, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah mentioned that this ceremony marks the third distribution of laptops to students since the launch of her digitalization initiative, aimed at providing students with essential technological skills and enhancing the UG student experience through digitalization.
“We thank the chair and members of the implementation committee. They took the concept, developed it and ran with it and I think this is the third distribution ceremony, if we discount the one we did exclusively for graduate students,” she said.
Meanwhile, a student is eligible for the University of Ghana Vice Chancellor’s One Student, One Laptop initiative if they are a Ghanaian undergraduate student of the university in Levels 100–300 or a Ghanaian postgraduate student enrolled in a research degree programme (i.e., an MPhil or PhD) and have completed one year of their programme.
The student is expected to be able to demonstrate limited family income and/or insufficient funds to acquire a laptop and should be a needy student with a competitive CGPA.
Also, the VC announced in an interview with JoyNews in October this year that her outfit is far advanced, with plans to build a computer assembly plant on the school’s premises.
She said this initiative is far advanced and will fully become operational within a year.
“We are actually looking to assemble laptops right here on campus. So, we’ve gone through the process of selecting the companies and signing the agreements, so very soon we should break ground for the assembly plant.
“Right at the beginning, we are getting ready to supply; we’ve signed that agreement. Getting the assembling plant and all will take a bit of time but at the same time we’ve also signed the agreement to start that so I believe that within a year we will be able to move over to get the laptops assembled here,” she said.

During the 3rd Conference on Fisheries and Coastal Environment in Accra, the World Bank expressed its commitment to supporting the Ghanaian government in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Lower Volta region.
This crisis stemmed from the flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam by the Volta River Authority, which resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents along with the loss of their homes, farms, and businesses.
Michelle Keane, the Operations Manager of the World Bank in Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, conveyed the World Bank’s sympathy for the affected victims and affirmed the organization’s readiness to assist the government’s efforts in addressing this situation.
“We can’t speak about flooding today without conveying the World Bank’s sincere empathy and concern for the ten thousand people who have been impacted by the recent floods along the Volta River,” she said. “The World Bank would want to express its readiness to support the government in its response to this crisis.”
Keane also expressed optimism that the Ghanaian government would make use of a $150 million loan facility to safeguard coastal communities from flooding by implementing a sustainable, long-term strategy.
“In the longer term, developing a sustainability and risk management strategy for theVolta River and Volta Delta, among other areas, will be crucial to determining where it is safe for people to live and how their livelihoods can be sustained and grow along the Volta River supported by a healthy ecosystem,” she said.
“We hope that the government and its partners will take full advantage of the $150 million approved by the World Bank for Ghana under the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Programme (WACA). The financing is expected to become available very soon after parliamentary approval,” Keane added.
The unit had been temporarily closed in May for renovation, and when it was reopened, patients were faced with increased costs, ranging from GH¢380 to GH¢765.42.
Protests erupted due to these proposed higher charges, prompting the immediate closure of the facility, even though it continued to provide intensive care for severe cases.
The hospital’s management also initiated an internal inquiry into the pricing, as it had not received parliamentary approval.
The closure of the facility sparked public outrage, leading to Parliament summoning the Minister of Health to address the issue. Prior to his appearance on Thursday, November 9, Kwaku Agyeman Manu instructed the hospital’s management to admit outpatients once again.
This directive was issued on Thursday, November 2, according to Isaac Baah Ofei, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ministry of Health.
“The Minister has directed the Chief Executive Officer of Korle-Bu to, as a matter of urgency, see to the opening of the centre, and so he directed as well that it be opened,” Mr Baah Offei disclosed in an interview on TV3.
On Tuesday, November 7, Godwin Asediba of TV3 reported from the unit that, although it has been reopened to outpatients, they are now required to provide laboratory results before being scheduled for dialysis.
This measure has been implemented as a precautionary step to guard against the potential introduction of bacteria from procedures conducted at private centres in the recent past.
“I am a bit relieved,” a kidney patient said.
“At least, it’s quite better than doing it outside. I am more comfortable doing it over here than outside. Korle Bu is the best.”
But some of the patients have raised concerns that the facilities at the unit may break down due to pressure from the over 251 of them seeking care.
According to them, if government does not beef up the numberof pieces of equipment at the unit, it may be shut down again in the next month or two.
