Transfer: Napoli ace Kvara, a perfect match for Madrid

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, a winger for Napoli, has surprised Europe’s top footballers with his quick ascent to fame.

The Georgian star cost around £9 million to join the Serie A frontrunners last summer, but he has been a revelation, dismantling defences both domestically and internationally.

Kvaratskhelia claims he loves living in Naples, but with teams like Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Manchester City all rumoured to be interested, a summer transfer is very likely.

We examine “Kvaradona” as Napoli gets ready to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 matchup this evening.

    Humble beginnings

Kvaratskhelia’s native Georgia does not exactly have a rich football history.

Manchester City fans of a bygone era will fondly remember Georgi Kinkladze, while the nation’s all-time top scorer Shota Arveladze was a regular at Rangers and recently had an ill-fated spell in charge of Championship side Hull.

At an elite level, defender Kakha Kaladze won Champions League titles with AC Milan in 2003 and 2007 — yet there is good reason to think Kvaratskhelia will surpass even his achievements in due course.

Wind the clock back 12 months from now and even the most committed football purist could be forgiven for not having the Rubin Kazan starlet on their radar.

He netted only twice in 19 Russian Premier League matches in 2021-22, before Russia’s conflict with Ukraine led to his contract being suspended.

He headed home to Dinamo Batumi, where eight goals in 11 games prompted Napoli to cough up a modest sum to bring him to Italy.

Securing that agreement ahead of the likes of Juventus and Roma has proved to be a masterstroke.

Few could have anticipated how quickly Napoli’s No77 would make his mark on top-level football, with his unpredictable and direct playing style proving a nightmare for opposition defences to contain.

Already, he has racked up 12 goals and 12 assists across 24 Serie A and Champions League matches this term, meaning the 19-cap international is operating at an average of one direct goal involvement per game.

That puts him in elite company indeed.

His club team-mate Victor Osimhen, Manchester City sensation Erling Haaland, Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski and the Paris Saint-Germain trio of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar are the only others to do so in 2022-23 from Europe’s top leagues.

It is little wonder there is so much speculation around a possible transfer.

    Attracting interest

Kvaratskhelia’s agent went public last week regarding speculation over his client’s future — though he stopped short of saying a move was on the cards.

Mamuka Jugeli told press in Italy: “There is a lot of interest from other clubs. Kvara, however, is only thinking about winning the Scudetto and Napoli’s matches in the Champions League.

“He told me that in terms of football in Italy, he sees himself only in Naples. He will never play for any other Italian club, apart from Napoli. He feels at home in Naples.”

That statement should at least reassure Partenopei supporters that their talisman will not be jumping ship to Juve, just as former star Gonzalo Higuain did back in 2016.

Whether or not that rules out a transfer to one of Europe’s other giants, however, remains to be seen.

    Finding a fit

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is prone to shooting on sight for Napoli
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is prone to shooting on sight for Napoli

Kvaratskhelia’s style certainly appears suited to some sides better than others.

While no club would turn their nose up at his league-leading assists tally or penchant for a jaw-dropping strike, the 22-year-old does not always make the correct decision.

Frequent moments of magic are also accompanied by errors. For example, to reach his impressive tally of 47 completed take-ons in Serie A this term, he has had to fail on 81 occasions.

His passing accuracy currently sits under 80%, while only 29 of his 75 shots this season have hit the target.

Teams such as Manchester City and Bayern Munich, who prefer to carefully craft their attacks through high possession and patient build-up, would potentially find the Georgian’s unpredictability problematic.

    Made for Madrid

Perhaps somewhere like Real Madrid, where the game’s biggest mavericks have been given a platform to strut their stuff for many decades, could be ideal for Kvaratskhelia.

What is more, the man himself declared his love for Los Blancos in an interview during his time with Rubin Kazan that only surfaced recently.

In it, he confessed: “My biggest dream is to win the Champions League with Real Madrid.

I’ve been a Real Madrid fan since I was a child.

“With my brothers, we were always watching their games and cheering them on.”

While Premier League giants will be hoping the youngster has had a change of heart, those comments suggest the LaLiga giants will be in pole position when a bidding war commences.

Right now, the dynamic attacker is trying to achieve his Champions League dream in Naples — and he may just do exactly that.

  • Why are earthquakes so hard to predict?

Why are earthquakes so hard to predict?

Even though they have looked into possible precursor phenomena, scientists have not yet been able to identify any clear signs that an impending shaking is about to occur.

Major earthquakes, like the 7.8-magnitude quake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, have well-established causes. Despite this, they are still difficult to predict.

Although science and technology have advanced, it is still essentially impossible to predict exactly when and where earthquakes will occur.

“Earthquake prediction has always been kind of a holy grail,” said Wendy Bohon, an earthquake geologist who works as a communications strategist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. “If we could tell people exactly when an earthquake was going to happen, we could take steps to mitigate against it. But Earth is a very complicated system.”

Part of the challenge is that the very nature of earthquakes makes them unpredictable events. When one does occur, it happens quickly.

“An earthquake is not like a slow-moving train that eventually picks up speed. It’s a sudden, accelerated event,” said Ben van der Pluijm, a professor of geology at the University of Michigan.

Earthquakes also tend to strike with little to no warning. Though scientists have investigated potential precursor events — everything from shifts in subsurface sounds to potential increases in a region’s seismic activity to changes in animal behavior — they have so far been unable to pinpoint any consistent signals that shaking is imminent.

The lack of any clear pattern makes it difficult to create reliable forecasts akin to weather reports.

Additionally, the processes that underpin earthquakes — the mashing and colliding of tectonic plates and the energy that builds up as a result — tend to play out over long periods of time. Scientists can, for instance, gauge that an earthquake will likely strike an area some time in the next 200 years, which may be specific on geologic timescales. On human time scales? Not so much.

“We have an incredibly good idea of where we expect earthquakes, and even the sizes that we can expect for large earthquakes in these areas, but that does not help us to narrow that down to a human timescale,” van der Pluijm said.

The U.S. Geological Survey is even more blunt on the topic. “Neither the USGS nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake. We do not know how, and we do not expect to know how any time in the foreseeable future,” the agency said on its website.

Still, there are ways to prepare. The USGS has developed an early-warning system called ShakeAlert that detects when a significant earthquake has occurred in California, Oregon and Washington and then issues radio, television and cellular alerts saying that strong shaking is imminent. In most cases, the alerts offer only a few seconds of warning, but that time can be extremely valuable, said van der Pluijm.

“Twenty seconds sounds very short, but it’s enough time for you to find a place under a desk to take cover,” he said. “It’s not a prediction, but ShakeAlert is a huge step forward because it can minimize the inevitable impact.”

One of the most important ways to prepare for an earthquake is to be aware of the risks, Bohon said. For policymakers, this means ensuring that critical infrastructure is protected in earthquake-prone areas.

“What we need to do is to make sure we understand what can happen and build to withstand that,” she said. “We have to make sure people know what to do. We have to make sure that our cities are able to be resilient in the face of those hazards so that we don’t just survive the earthquake, we can survive in the aftermath.”

  • Putin’s state of the nation address which took almost two hours. What exactly did he say?

Putin’s state of the nation address which took almost two hours. What exactly did he say?

President Putin attributes the war he started a year ago to the West and Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, gave a speech on the state of the nation in the nation’s capital, Moscow, in which he discussed the invasion of Ukraine that he had authorised a year earlier.

The following are key points from his speech to members of both houses of parliament, military leaders, and soldiers on Tuesday:

‘Russia is suspending its participation’ in the New START treaty

“I am forced to announce today that Russia is suspending its participation in the strategic offensive arms treaty.”

The New START treaty was signed in Prague in 2010. It came into force the following year and was extended in 2021 for five more years after United States President Joe Biden took office.

It caps the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the United States and Russia can deploy, and the deployment of land and submarine-based missiles and bombers to deliver them.

Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world, with close to 6,000 warheads, according to experts. Together, Russia and the United States hold about 90 percent of the world’s nuclear warheads – enough to destroy the planet many times over.

‘A watershed moment for our country’

“I am making this address at a time which we all know is a difficult, watershed moment for our country, a time of cardinal, irreversible changes around the world, the most important historic events that will shape the future of our country and our people, when each of us bears a colossal responsibility.”

Western nations trying to ‘distract people’s attention’

“They just tried to use these principles of democracy and freedom to defend their totalitarian values and they tried to distract people’s attention from corruption scandals … from economic-social problems.”

‘Responsibility is on West and Ukrainian elite’

“The responsibility is on the West and the Ukrainian elite and government, which does not serve the national interest, but [rather serves the interest] of third countries [which] use Ukraine as a military base to fight Russia.

“The more they send weapons to Ukraine, the more we will have the responsibility of the security situation at the Russian border. This is a natural response.”

‘We don’t fight the Ukrainian people’

“We don’t fight with the Ukrainian people. They became hostages of the Kyiv regime that occupied Ukraine both economically and politically. Over years, they were doing everything to bring this degradation … They are using their people, it’s sad but true.”

    Donbas subjected to ‘undisguised hatred’

“Step by step, carefully and consistently, we will resolve the tasks facing us. Since 2014, the (people of the) Donbas had been fighting, defending their right to live on their own land, to speak their native language.

“They fought and did not give up in the conditions of blockade and constant shelling, undisguised hatred on the part of the Kyiv regime. They believed and expected that Russia would come to their rescue.

“Meanwhile, we did our best to solve this problem by peaceful means. We patiently tried to negotiate a peaceful way out of this most difficult conflict, but a completely different scenario was being prepared behind our backs.”

‘Reviving enterprises and jobs’ in occupied Ukrainian lands

“We have already begun and will continue to build up a large-scale programme for the socioeconomic recovery and development of these new subjects of the federation (territory annexed from Ukraine). We are talking about reviving enterprises and jobs in the ports of the Sea of Azov, which has again become an inland sea of Russia, and building new modern roads, as we did in Crimea.”

‘I understand how unbearably hard it is’ for families of killed soldiers

Putin said he understood how difficult it was for relatives of Russian soldiers who had died fighting in Ukraine, and promised “targeted support” with a new special fund.

“We all understand, I understand how unbearably hard it is now for the wives, sons, daughters of fallen soldiers, their parents, who raised worthy defenders of the Fatherland.”

‘Child abuse all the way up to paedophilia … advertised as the norm’ in the West

“They distort historical facts and constantly attack our culture, the Russian Orthodox Church, and other traditional religions of our country,” Putin said of Western nations supporting Ukraine.

“Look at what they do with their own peoples: the destruction of the family, cultural and national identity, perversion and the abuse of children are declared the norm. And priests are forced to bless same-sex marriages.

“As it became known, the Anglican Church plans to consider the idea of a gender-neutral God … Millions of people in the West understand they are being led to a real spiritual catastrophe.”

“Look at what they do to their own people: the destruction of families, of cultural and national identities and the perversion that is child abuse all the way up to paedophilia, are advertised as the norm … and priests are forced to bless same-sex marriages.”

  • Karius awaits EFL Cup final ‘very relaxed and excited’ – Howe

Karius awaits EFL Cup final ‘very relaxed and excited’ – Howe

Before making an unexpected debut for Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final, Eddie Howe has no doubt that Loris Karius is in a positive frame of mind.

Karius will make his Newcastle debut against Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday thanks to an unlikely chain of events.

Nick Pope, the team’s starting keeper, was dismissed against Liverpool last weekend, and Martin Dubravka, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Man United, is currently cup-tied. He won’t receive a medal unless his teammates from Newcastle do.

The fourth- and fifth-choice goalies, Karius and Mark Gillespie, will be in the spotlight because Karl Darlow, who began Newcastle’s cup campaign in goal, was also permitted to go on loan.

It is Newcastle’s first major cup final since the 1999 FA Cup final, a loss to Man United, but Karius has rather more recent and similarly painful memories of such an occasion.

He was at fault for two goals as Liverpool lost the 2018 Champions League final to Real Madrid, despite having suffered a concussion. He never played for Liverpool again.

But Newcastle head coach Howe said of that match: “I’ve never really discussed that at any length with him [Karius].

“We’ve all got stuff that’s happened in our careers and our histories that you learn from, and I think he’s no different in that respect.”

“Since day one since he’s come here – he started where he hadn’t had a lot of work before joining us – he’s trained with our goalkeeper coaches in a really, really good way.

“His general performances in training have improved as he’s spent more time with us, and I think he’s in a good place and he’s ready to play.”

Asked how talks had gone with Karius since his sudden promotion, Howe added: “Those conversations are the type of conversations I have with him on a regular basis.

“How is he? How does he feel his training’s going? Are we giving him everything he needs to be the best that he can be?

“He’s a very likeable, laidback character. I’ve got no doubts on his confidence levels. He seems very relaxed and excited – as Mark is – about what lies ahead.”

Pope has kept the most clean sheets in both the Premier League (12) and EFL Cup (four) this season, but Howe himself is also still confident.

“I think we have to be very positive about our situation, about the game,” he said. “Yes, it’s a blow to lose Nick, but we still believe in the team and the group that we have.”

  • Van Dijk’s return can spark Reds renaissance

Van Dijk’s return can spark Reds renaissance

It would be an understatement to say that Liverpool’s season has not gone as planned.

Jurgen Klopp’s team is currently sitting in eighth place in the Premier League and has been eliminated from both domestic cups.

With Real Madrid, whom they haven’t defeated in their last six European meetings, including two agonising final losses in 2018 and 2022, they now face a daunting two-legged Champions League knockout match.

Although returning defender Virgil van Dijk suggested the Reds had turned a corner after Saturday’s impressive 2-0 win at Newcastle, expectations are appropriately muted ahead of tonight’s match at Anfield.

We put the influential Dutchman under the microscope ahead of his latest battle with Los Blancos.

    Liverpool legend

Alongside the attacking brilliance of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk has been one of the leading figures of the Klopp era.

Almost immediately after arriving from Southampton for £75million in 2018, his domineering presence in the Reds’ backline transformed an already exciting side into a well-oiled machine.

With his crisp passing range, immense composure, and natural leadership, Van Dijk was the final piece of the jigsaw that helped Liverpool enjoy their most trophy-laden period for many decades.

He has won it all on Merseyside. Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup medals are all in his trophy cabinet, while he has also lifted both domestic cups.

If he was to leave this summer, the Netherlands international would already be assured iconic status at Liverpool — though the 31-year-old appears to have no intention of exiting Anfield.

    Injury woes

However, injuries have undoubtedly hampered Van Dijk’s influence in recent years.

Having started 94 straight Premier League games for the Reds in a stunning run between February 2018 and October 2020, the Dutch colossus sustained a catastrophic knee injury against Merseyside rivals Everton.

Challenging for a ball with England stopper Jordan Pickford, the resulting ACL rupture would sideline Van Dijk for the remainder of 2020-21.

He impressively returned to play 51 times in all competitions last term as the Reds agonisingly missed out on the Premier League title by a point, while also losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

Any fitness concerns appeared to have been banished, until a hamstring issue sustained against Brentford seven weeks ago prompted another stint on the sidelines.

Having missed seven games across all competitions, Van Dijk made a timely return to action on Saturday as the Reds overcame high-flying Newcastle at St James’ Park.

The 2-0 success keeps Liverpool within reach of a top-four spot and the influential defender was quick to point out how crucial the victory could be in kick-starting a frustrating campaign.

Van Dijk said: “We’ve had results in the season where we have felt like this is the time to kick on. But this feels a little bit different.

“Coming away from the big win against Everton, it was important to keep going and find a way to win. There is a reason why we are the only team to win here.

“It feels very good [to be back from injury]. Being healthy is the most important thing in the world.

“It was a tough six weeks but I’m back, hopefully I will do everything in my power to recover and be ready for the Champions League game, it is massive for us.”

    Waning influence

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has been one of several pundits to suggest Van Dijk has been a different player since his ACL injury.

Murphy, 45, told talkSPORT earlier this season: “He’s not up to his level. Before his injury, he was arguably looking like one of the best centre-halves we’ve ever seen.

“The injury, which is a huge one and he’s come back from, although he’s not had problems in missing games, I think psychologically he’s not in the same place.”

While there may be some credence to Murphy’s observation, the Reds undoubtedly remain a stronger team for their No4’s presence on the field.

As well as his defensive nous, Van Dijk still ranks inside the Premier League’s top 10 centre-backs this term for touches, completed passes and aerial duels per 90 minutes.

He is crucial to the Reds’ build-up play — while 18 shots and two goals show him to be a serious attacking threat in his own right.

Virgil van Dijk offers far more to Liverpool than an average centre-half
Virgil van Dijk offers far more to Liverpool than an average centre-half

    Silencing critics

Liverpool’s issues have been widespread this season but with Van Dijk back in the heart of their defence, business could be about to pick up.

Of the 24 games he has completed 90 minutes in this season in all competitions, the Meresysiders have won on 15 occasions, drawing four and losing five times.

Conversely, the 10 games he has not featured or completed have resulted in only two wins, three draws and five defeats.

Regardless of whether his very best days are behind him or not, Van Dijk is key to reviving a wretched Reds campaign.

Amancio Amaro, former Real Madrid forward and honorary president dies at 83

Former Real Madrid forward and honorary club president, Amancio Amaro, passed away at the age of 83.

Amancio, a right-sided attacker, joined Madrid from Deportivo de La Coruna in 1962 and played 471 times for Los Blancos, tallying 155 goals.

Amancio, who finished third in the 1964 Ballon d’Or voting, played a significant role in Spain’s victory as European champions in addition to winning nine league championships and one European Cup with Madrid.

Amancio helped Emilio Butragueno and other players grow after he retired by coaching Madrid’s Castilla team to the second-tier championship in 1984. After Paco Gento passed away last year, Amancio was named honorary club president.

A club statement read: “Real Madrid CF, its president and its board of directors deeply regret the death of Amancio Amaro, honorary president of Real Madrid and one of the great legends of our club and of world football.

“Together with Paco Gento, Amancio led Real Madrid after five consecutive European Cups, and represents the values that have forged the history of our club.

“Amancio Amaro has passed away at the age of 83. He will be remembered by all Madridistas and by all football fans as one of the great legends of this sport.

Neville: Arsenal talk of the town due to ‘Sloppy’ City’s weak defence

Gary Neville thinks Arsenal has regained momentum in the title race as a result of Manchester City’s shoddy finishing and weak defence.

Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions dropped two crucial points at Nottingham Forest three days after defeating the Gunners 3-1 at the Emirates last Wednesday, when they could only manage a 1-1 draw.

In the meantime, Mikel Arteta’s team recovered from that crushing defeat at home with a thrilling 4-2 victory at Aston Villa, propelling them back to the top of the standings.

And 48-year-old Neville, a legend of Manchester United, thinks the North Londoners will win the trophy in May.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, he said: “We’ve got an intriguing title race. Arsenal needed a good weekend. They’ve conceded 10 goals in the last six games.

“They need to stop conceding goals. One of the traits of a run-in is that if you’re conceding goals and teams feel they have a chance, it’s very difficult to win a league. They just need to watch that.

“They can go five points clear again if they win their game in hand. Thomas Partey not playing is a miss but they just need to think about getting back to clean sheets in this next period.

“But for City, they’re still giving Arsenal a big chance because they’re not playing at their best. They’re sloppy in front of goal and they still look vulnerable themselves at the back.

“There is such a long way to go and it will twist back and forward.

“I watched the highlights of the City game against Forest and they missed chance after chance and were sloppy in front of goal.”

Neville has also questioned Guardiola’s decision to deploy playmaker Bernardo Silva as a makeshift defender.

He added: “I still can’t get my head around Silva in a left-back position.

“I think you’ll concede goals there potentially if that continues to happen and Guardiola is taking a risk if he has him there.

“When they went ahead against Arsenal and started to look comfortable was when they went to a proper back four.”

Leaders Arsenal travel to Leicester on Saturday while City are at Bournemouth in the evening kick-off.

  • Five footballer deaths which broke Ghanaian hearts

Five footballer deaths which broke Ghanaian hearts

One aspect of life that has been accepted by all is the certainty of death. Every human accepts and acknowledges that, just as they were born, they will die.

The mystery of not knowing when or how one will pass away makes it sickening and shocking to loved ones, even though it is common knowledge that everyone will leave this world eventually.

The person’s position in society, influence, and popularity, among other things, all have a significant impact on how shocked and sad people are when someone passes away.

Over the years, Ghana has lost some outstanding footballers, but there are a select few whose passing has caused the nation to mourn.

Here are five players whose death shocked Ghanaians

    Shamo Quaye

Hearts of Oak legend, Shamo Quaye mystifyingly passed away On November 30, 1997, while playing football.

He participated in a fun match in Tema after his return for holidays from Sweden after the 1906/97 season.

In the course of the game, Quaye was hit in the face by a ball and immediately fell down unconsciously. He died two days after he was rushed to the hospital.

Shamo Quaye died at age 26. He was the fan favourite during his time at Hearts of Oak.

He had two spells at Hearts of Oak, played for Suadi Arabian side Al Qadsiah FC, and Swedish side Umea FC.

    Manuel Junior Agogo

Junior Manuel Agogo passed away in London on August 22, 2019, at age 40 after battling an illness.

Agogo played for the Black Stars between 2006 and 2009. He became a household name after his performance at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Ghana.

He scored 12 goals in 27 caps for the national team.

    Robert Mensah

Robert Mensah is regarded as the greatest-ever Ghanaian goalkeeper. He passed away after being stabbed with a broken bottle at a bar in 1971.

He played for Ebusua Dwarfs, Sekondi Independence Club, Asante Kotoko, and Tema Textiles Printing.

He led Kotoko to their first now CAF Champions League title in 1970.

    Christian Atsu

Christian Atsu passed away in February 2023 after his body was pulled out of his destroyed apartment in Turkey following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Turkey.

He was initially declared missing after the tragic incident on February 6 but was eventually found dead on February 18.

The deceased winger, who made 60 appearances for Ghana, scored 10 goals in his 11-year international career.

His last appearance came in 2019 when he played in the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

Christian Atsu is the only Ghanaian to have won the best player and best goal at AFCON, a feat he achieved in 2015.

    Uriah Asante

The former Accra Hearts of Oak player is the second Ghanaian footballer to have died after collapsing on the football pitch or in training.

He was reported to have collapsed in training with his club, Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia, and died from a reported cardiac arrest.

Uriah Asante died at the age of 24, having spent two years with Accra Hearts of Oak.

  • Paintsil encourages finer CHAN team scouting

Paintsil encourages finer CHAN team scouting

John Paintsil, a former defender for the Black Stars, has urged the managers of the Black Galaxies to expand their search for players for the local national team.

He pointed out that the overabundance of players, particularly in the Premier League, was not advantageous and recommended that the Division One League and Division Two League, the second- and third-tier divisions, be included in the search for players.

Paintsil gave Ghana’s poor showing at the recent African Nations Championship (CHAN), which was played in Algeria last month, a lower grade than Coach Annor Walker’s team’s lack of quality players. Ghana was eliminated in the quarterfinals, which Paintsil attributed to bad luck rather than the team’s performance being subpar.

He told Graphic Sports in an interview last Saturday that it was wrong for the Black Galaxies players to be scouted mainly from the premiership when there are very talented players also in the lower tier side who could be given the chance to play for the national team.

“It shouldn’t be; for me, the Black Galaxies should have given the opportunity to the third division, second division, and first division players so that the Black Stars would be given to the premiership players in order to have a fair balance,” he advised.

He admitted that the players who were selected were the best quality we had on the local scene, but their inability to perform wasn’t because they were bad; rather, they all had a bad tournament.

“The players the coach took to the tournament are not bad at all, nobody can question that but like I said they didn’t have their day but he went with a great squad,” he said.

Paintsil, who played the role of a summariser for the TV commentary, was reluctant to finger any official or player for Ghana’s failure at the CHAN, insisting that sometimes a team can have the best of players at a tournament but could still crash out early.

According to him, the late withdrawal of Morocco from the tournament also impacted negatively on Ghana because the presence of the North African side could have motivated the Black Galaxies to play their hearts out against players who performed well at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“So for them to go there and play just two matches in the group or one match to qualify to the next stage, even the players themselves may think that they didn’t work hard enough to get there, and psychologically, it may affect their performance,” he said.

Gakpo lauds Liverpool’s unity after a challenging run

Cody Gakpo credited Jurgen Klopp’s team’s spirit and camaraderie for Liverpool’s recent improvement in performance, saying: “When it’s difficult, a real team shows up.”

The first four league games of 2023 saw Liverpool go winless, earning Klopp the harshest criticism of his time as manager at Anfield thus far. However, back-to-back victories have lifted the spirits in Merseyside.

Last week, Gakpo scored his first goal for Liverpool in a 2-0 victory over Everton, and on Saturday, he added another goal in a 2-0 triumph over Newcastle, another team competing for a spot in the top four.

Before Real Madrid and Liverpool’s first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday, Gakpo made the case that Liverpool’s mini-revival may have occurred at the ideal time.

“I think it’s difficult to put your finger on something that has really changed, but everyone knows when you’re not winning the games, it’s difficult,” Gakpo said.

“I think the games we won, we played better than in the games before, and the result is maybe the outcome of the greater intensity we had in those games.”

“As a newcomer, I sense that the group is really good, we come together and stay together in difficult moments. It was difficult to try to stay positive and keep helping each other, it has helped us go on to better things.

“When it’s difficult, a real team shows up. This is one of those times. We really stuck together and stayed positive and tried to help each other in the difficult moments.

“Just in time, we started winning games again, and now we have a big opportunity to show we are back on track.”

Despite spending the majority of his time with former club PSV stationed on the left flank, Gakpo has largely been used as a central striker since his arrival at Liverpool.

However, the Netherlands international feels comfortable playing either role, adding: “I played the last three years on the left side, but at the World Cup under Louis van Gaal I already played in the centre.

“I already tried to adapt to that, and when I came here the coach said it was possible for me to play on the left or in the centre, so I’ll try to adapt quickly to that position and improve.”

  • Klopp and Carlo to face off in one of football’s great modern rivalries

Klopp and Carlo to face off in one of football’s great modern rivalries

Tuesday’s Champions League round of 16 match between Liverpool and Real Madrid will be the latest encounter between Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti.

Their individual histories could have been very dissimilar.

In October 2015, after Everton and Liverpool drew 1-1 at Goodison Park, Thierry Henry reached across and put his hand on a perplexed Jamie Carragher’s knee in the Sky Sports studio as it was announced that Brendan Rodgers had been fired as the manager of the Reds.

In a matter of minutes, the front-runner Klopp was being discussed as the candidate most likely to take the club back to the pinnacle of European and English football.

The second favourite had been Ancelotti, out of work at the time following his exit from his first spell at Madrid, and Carragher argued that while the Italian had the more impressive CV, Klopp was the more suitable choice for the Anfield hotseat after his success at Borussia Dortmund.

“I think with either of those coming to Liverpool, the supporters would be ecstatic,” he said at the time. “If it were me, I would go for Klopp ahead of Ancelotti.” I think he’s got more to prove. Ancelotti is a great manager, of course, but he’s gone to clubs where you would expect to win trophies.

“Getting Liverpool back into the top four is now a difficult task.” Forget talking about the title. And I think it needs someone with that energy and drive to get Liverpool back to where it wants to be, and I think Jurgen Klopp’s that man.”

Of course, Carragher proved to be right about Klopp.

It will never be known what would have happened had Ancelotti been hired instead, but he has gone on to enjoy success at other clubs since, with spells at Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton before heading back to the Santiago Bernabeu in December 2021.

The two have faced off numerous times in opposing dugouts, with the upcoming two-legged Champions League tie set to be their 12th and 13th meetings.

It is interesting how frequently Klopp and Ancelotti have come up against one another, especially considering the Italian’s 18-month spell at Everton was the only time they have managed in the same league.

They clashed on four occasions in Merseyside derbies – coincidentally after that had been the fixture that led to their names being linked with the Liverpool job back in 2015 – with two draws at Goodison Park in the Premier League and a 1-0 Liverpool win in an FA Cup third round game at Anfield.

The most notable encounter also came at Anfield in February 2021, with no fans in due to COVID-19 restrictions, where Ancelotti masterminded Everton’s first win at the home of their neighbours since the turn of the century.

Their other seven meetings have come in the Champions League, Klopp coming up against Ancelotti for the first time during his penultimate season at Borussia Dortmund as they took on Madrid in the last eight, losing 3-0 in the Spanish capital before a spirited but unsuccessful 2-0 reverse back in Dortmund.

Two goals from Marco Reus in the first half had given the German side hope of a comeback, but Ancelotti’s men put up the defences and managed to see the game out, a tactic that the Los Blancos head coach has used to good effect against Klopp on numerous occasions since.

He also frustrated Klopp in their first meeting as Liverpool and Napoli bosses respectively, with the Serie A side winning 1-0 at home in the 2018-19 group stage, restricting the Reds to just four shots – none on which were on target – as Lorenzo Insigne struck a late winner.

A Mohamed Salah goal in the reverse fixture was enough to send Liverpool through to the knockout stage with a 1-0 win at Anfield at Napoli’s expense, with the Reds going on to lift the trophy in Madrid that season.

The two teams were drawn together again in the group stage the following year, with Napoli again defeating Liverpool in Naples, 2-0 this time, while they played out a 1-1 draw back on Merseyside.

Klopp and Ancelotti would not meet again in the Champions League until after their brief Merseyside derby rivalry, somewhat appropriately in the final as Liverpool faced Madrid in Paris last season.

While the game was heavily distracted by the chaos outside prior to kick-off that an independent investigation has since claimed was the fault of UEFA and the French authorities, on the pitch it had a feel of Klopp’s previous struggles with Ancelotti.

Liverpool dominated large parts of the contest, but Madrid were largely able to contain them, though goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois still had to put in an outstanding performance to keep a clean sheet.

Ancelotti suggested after the 1-0 win thanks to a Vinicius Junior goal that Klopp’s team were “more decipherable” than others he had faced, but ahead of their next clash, the German coach lavished praise on his opposite number.

“Carlo is the most relaxed manager I ever met in my life,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference. “One of the best people you can meet, fantastic person, a humble person, super smart and nice, and obviously his man management is at a completely different level to all of us, and I respect that a lot and admire it a lot.”

Ancelotti reciprocated at his press conference, saying: “I have a good relationship with Klopp. We stayed for a year and a half in Liverpool during the pandemic, and we used to text each other and exchange gifts. He’s a really lovely person.”

There is clear mutual respect there, strengthened by the duo’s personal achievements as well as how difficult they both find games against one another.

Klopp’s teams have only managed to find the net seven times against Ancelotti’s in 11 games, despite having 153 shots, suggesting the former Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss knows how to restrict them to low-quality chances.

Ancelotti has relied on his team’s defensive solidity more often than not, and boasts the superior record with five wins to three defeats and three draws, but he has never been able to beat a Klopp team in an away game when fans have been in attendance, with a noisy Anfield on Tuesday a near certainty.

He surely takes slightly more pleasure in besting Liverpool than he does most other foes following one of his most painful defeats as a coach when his Milan side was beaten on penalties in the iconic 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul, despite leading 3-0 at half-time.

This season’s final will also be in the Turkish capital, but at least one of Liverpool or Ancelotti will not be there this time.

Klopp v Ancelotti. Germany v Italy. Beard v eyebrow. It is one of the great modern coaching rivalries, and round 12 should be another fascinating contest.

All they had was Atsu- Stephen Appiah on streets boys Atsu took care of

Stephen Appiah, a former Black Stars captain, has eulogised Christian Atsu as one of the athletes who gave the underprivileged in Ghanaian society hope.

Christian Atsu, who was trapped in the earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023, died at the age of 31. His body was discovered 12 days later.

Christian Atsu carried out a variety of charitable deeds up until his passing. A few prisoners’ release was funded by the former FC Porto player. He also contributed to a few orphanages and helped pay for many people’s medical expenses and school tuition.

Stephen Appiah, a former Newcastle player, paid tribute to the late Ghanaian international, saying he would be missed for his charitable work and for giving hope to the less fortunate.

Appiah said, “Aside from football, we know the love and charity work Atsu has been doing.”

“I think at this moment most of the guys on the street, I mean the hawkers on the street, all had their hope in Atsu, and now he has taken all the hope away,” he told Dan Kwaku Yeboah in an interview.

“We know there is a big funeral coming, and we will all support you with all we have,” he added.

  • Chelsea has still not sacked Graham Potter yet? Find out why

Chelsea has still not sacked Graham Potter yet? Find out why

Chelsea, under Graham Potter, is having a terrible run in the English Premier League.

Graham Potter is under pressure as Chelsea’s manager after a stretch of just two victories in his previous 14 Premier League games. However, why hasn’t he been fired?

James Ward-Prowse’s kick on Saturday was all it took to prevent Chelsea from winning for a fifth straight game, adding to the pressure on Potter as a very difficult stretch continues. After a frenetic January shopping spree, the former Brighton manager took over for Thomas Tuchel in September of last year. However, since taking over, Chelsea has not improved under his leadership.

Naturally, his struggle has resulted in many calling for his dismissal, but a new report from The Telegraph has outlined exactly why Chelsea are yet to sack Potter.

The report claims that Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are not yet convinced he is the problem and instead have a list of reasons why they shouldn’t sack him. Injuries behind the scenes are one reason, as is his poker face in the public eye; Potter is described as being “intense” around the Cobham training ground, and the owners have no fears over his mentality, but are instead happy they have a coach who will not throw players under the bus in front of the media.

Point three claims the owners recognise that Potter took a risk in joining the club from Brighton mid-season, something they believe not many top coaches and managers are always willing to do. They also understand he left a very safe environment at Brighton and put his reputation on the line in doing so, and they believe he needs a considerable amount of time to work with new players and develop a relationship with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart in order to create sustainable success, similar to Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain at Manchester City.

A severe loss of form sees Chelsea languishing in 10th in the Premier League, behind the likes of Liverpool, Fulham and Potter’s former club Brighton. They also find themselves 11 points behind fourth-placed Newcastle, and are at serious risk of not qualifying for the Champions League next season.

The Blues travel across London to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday in a bid to kickstart their season once again, but will also have one eye on their Champions League last-16 tie on March 7, where they must turn around a first-leg defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

  • PSG allegedly prepared to re-appoint Timothy Tuchel

PSG allegedly prepared to re-appoint Timothy Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel has been jobless since Chelsea fired him in September, but he might soon start coaching again.

The German has previously led top European clubs Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and the Blues, whom he took to the 2020-21 Champions League title.

The 49-year-old has reportedly turned down two Premier League offers despite being linked to numerous open positions in recent months.

TOP STORY – PSG WILLING TO ADMIT TUCHEL ERROR

According to the Evening Standard, PSG are fed up with head coach Christophe Galtier and are ready to re-appoint Thomas Tuchel.

The club sacked Tuchel in December 2020 after two and a half years in charge with the best win percentage in Ligue 1 history.

But PSG are reportedly willing to admit their mistake in letting him go as they try to convince Tuchel to return following their recent run of three straight defeats, which was ended by Sunday’s 4-3 win over Lille.

The report claims Tuchel would need assurances from the club, but it is the type of role he has been waiting for, joining a top side competing for major trophies.

    ROUND-UP

    – According to Football Insider, Tottenham is keeping an eye on Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio. Spurs will need to compete with Arsenal and Manchester United for the 27-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of this season.

Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United are all circling for Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram, according to Talksport. The Athletic claims Thuram will leave Gladbach in the off-season as a free agent, with Bayern Munich also interested.

Relevo reports Bayern are weighing up a move for Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, with head coach Julian Nagelsmann an admirer, although no contact has been made yet.

ESPN claims Manchester United and teenage sensation Alejandro Garnacho have agreed in principle to a new five-year contract, warding off interest.

Manchester United will need to fork out €80 million (£71 million) to land Tammy Abraham from Roma, according to Calciomercatoweb.

According to Calciomercatoweb, Juventus will make a move for Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz after this season. Diaz is currently on loan at Milan, but the Rossoneri will not trigger their option to buy him.

Liverpool aims to defeat recent opponent Real Madrid

Real Madrid will go to Anfield on Tuesday to rematch the 2022 Champions League championship with the goal of inflicting more damage on Liverpool in the round of 16.

Madrid won the coveted trophy in Paris last May, but despite Liverpool’s struggles in the Premier League this year, their recent European performance would indicate that they should present a stiff challenge for a team that has had Madrid’s number in recent years.

While Napoli, the lopsided Serie A leaders, roll into town, reigning Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt will try to keep up their impressive European form.

This season, Napoli has faced off against everyone, establishing itself as a major force in Europe and dominating Serie A.

Courtesy of Stats Perform: here are some of the key statistics and facts to be aware of ahead of the ties.

    Liverpool v Real Madrid

Memories of last season’s Champions League final will be fresh in the minds of these two sides as Liverpool try to reverse the recent trend of Madrid dominance.

The Spanish giants lifted the top prize in European club football for a 14th time after defeating Liverpool 1-0, leaving the English side winless in their past six meetings between the clubs.

That is the longest winless streak Liverpool have suffered against any team in their Champions League history, with five losses and one draw dating back to 2009.

However, England has not been a happy hunting ground for Madrid in recent years, with only one victory – against Chelsea in 2022 – from their past seven away fixtures in the country (D2 L4).

Also in the hosts’ favour is their terrific European form this season, having rattled off five consecutive wins in the competition since losing their opener against Napoli.

A key for the Reds will be figuring out how to stop Vinicius Junior, who has directly contributed to seven goals – scoring five and producing two assists – in his past eight Champions League fixtures.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah could join Chelsea legend Didier Drogba as Africa’s all-time leading scorer in the competition with one more goal, which would be his 44th.

    Eintracht Frankfurt v Napoli

Napoli will be dreaming of their first Champions League and Serie A double as they hit the road for their first leg against Frankfurt.

They will face a German side who have excelled in European competition under head coach Oliver Glasner, with only two losses from 19 matches (W10 D7), including a triumph in last season’s Europa League final against Rangers.

Frankfurt have won their past four meetings with Italian sides since a loss to Palermo back in 2006, while Napoli have just two wins from their 12 away dates in Germany (D5 L5).

But Napoli have been a different beast this campaign, leading all teams with 20 group stage goals. They are averaging 3.3 goals per game in the competition under Luciano Spalletti.

Breakout star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is at the centre of Napoli’s success, joining Dries Mertens (2017-18 season) as the only players in the history of the club to record multiple games with a goal and an assist in the same Champions League campaign. He has the potential to write his own history, as no Napoli player has done it three times.

Meanwhile, Frankfurt have a pair of in-form goalscorers. Daichi Kamada has scored in each of his side’s past three Champions League matches this season, while Randal Kolo Muani has found the back of the net in their past two.

The Ghana FA, along with many others who were connected to the player, released a statement to express their condolences after the player’s body was found beneath the rubble of the Turkey earthquake on Saturday.

“You snubbed him and kicked him out of your Black Stars at age 31. Atsu has been struggling to get a permanent stay in a club since the snub.

“We all know the value and respect your club gives you when you play for your nation.”

“Don’t pretend you loved him because you don’t at all,” John Paintsil told Original FM in an interview.

The late Christian Atsu, who tragically perished in the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, is being remembered by Newcastle United supporters.

As an ambassador for the charity Arms Around the Child, Atsu, who had previously played for the Magpies and Chelsea, was working on a project to construct a new school in his native Ghana.

At a charged St James’ Park, Newcastle remembered Atsu by observing a moment of silence prior to their match against Liverpool.

In honour of Atsu, the fan organisation Talk of Tyneside has launched a charitable project to complete the school project. They are requesting support from fans for the fundraiser, which has raised more than £600 so far.

Talk of Tyneside expressed their desire to give supporters a way to show appreciation for Atsu’s service to the club and his work with the charity.

The group stated that Atsu was a well-loved figure on Tyneside, and raising funds for the charity felt like the perfect way to honour his memory.

“Following his passing, we were hoping to find a way to give supporters a way to show appreciation for his service to the club, and raising money for a fantastic charity that he worked with feels like the perfect way to do so.”

Ellie Milner, also from Arms Around the Child, spoke about Atsu’s charity work and how they are determined to keep his legacy alive by raising funds to finish the school buildings in Senya Beraku and support the children he loved so much.

Ellie Milner from Arms Around The Child added: “Christian touched the lives of so many with his charity work, we are determined to keep his legacy alive by raising funds to finish the school buildings in Senya Beraku – and support the children he loved so much.”

Atsu’s mortal remains arrived in Ghana on Sunday for the burial.

EPL: Arsenal’s win is assured with Partey in game – Alan Shearer

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer says , Thomas Partey is a key player in the Premier League title match between Arsenal and Manchester City.

After Arsenal’s victory over Aston Villa and Manchester City’s draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Shearer made the remark on the BBC’s Match of the Day.

If Arsenal can get Partey back from injury, Shearer believes they have a good chance to defeat the defending champions this season.

Partey, one of the top defensive midfielders in the league, has been crucial for Arsenal this season. However, the player who makes £200,000 per week is currently injured and was not present for Arsenal’s victory over Villa.

Shearer believes that if Arsenal can keep their main players injury-free and get Partey back soon, they will have a good chance of winning the title.

“I know Partey is out injured at the minute. If Arsenal can get him back and have a little bit of luck between now and the end of the season, keeping their main big hitters free from injury, I think they will do it. Yeah.”

He has scored two goals in 18 Premier League appearances for the Gunners so far this season.

Arsenal is currently at the top of the Premier League table with 54 points from 23 matches, two points ahead of Manchester City, who have 52 points from 24 games.

The late Christian Atsu was among the players who, according to former Black Stars coach James Kwasi Appiah, always made him proud.

When Ghana faced Lesotho in 2012, Kwasi Appiah gave Christian Atsu his Black Stars debut at the age of 20.

Atsu scored during Ghana’s 7-0 victory over the opposition at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Disgusted Kwesi Appiah praised Atsu for keeping his word after the player passed away.

“It’s really, really sad that Atsu is no more. May his soul rest in peace, and my condolences go to the family as well as all of us Ghanaians. When he heard that there had been an earthquake in Turkey, we were all praying that he would be found, but God knows best. When you give him a role on the field, he will do his best to make you, the coach, proud… I used to tell my players to go onto the field and show that they deserved to be on the team. Atsu is one of the players who did not appear in front of me. On the pitch, he was humble and always laughing. The old and new players used to play with him every time. Apart from that, in his social life, we all knew how he helped the less privileged. “That is all I can say about Atsu,” he told Oman FM.

A high-magnitude earthquake struck in Hatay, Turkey on February 6, 2023, which led to Atsu being trapped in his destroyed apartment for over a week.

His body was discovered lifeless on February 18 and was added to the death toll of over 40,000 after the earthquake.

The deceased winger, who made 60 appearances for Ghana, scored 10 goals in his 11-year international career.

His last appearance came in 2019 when he played in the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

Concerns have been raised about the potential effects on Paris Saint-Germain, which was taken over by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) more than ten years ago, after it was revealed that a consortium led by a Qatari banker is in the running to buy Manchester United.

For just 70 million euros ($74.7m at the current exchange rate), QSI, a division of the sovereign wealth fund of the Gulf state of Qatar, acquired control of the French club in 2011.

PSG is now used by Qatar to project soft power because, while still the dominant club in France, they are also a major player on the European stage and a household name thanks to QSI’s ownership.

More than 1.5 billion euros have been splashed on transfers over the last dozen years, including the two biggest fees in the history of the game for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in 2017, although all that money has not yet delivered Champions League glory in which Qatar could bask.

But now the tiny, gas-rich state is aiming even higher with its sights set on United, the most successful club in the history of the most powerful league in the world, with commercial and broadcasting income far greater than what can be generated in the French top flight.

The bid, led by the chairman of the Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, is believed to be worth between four and six billion euros, according to several sources.

“This means nothing has been done without the approval of the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.”

However, there is no suggestion of the Qataris abandoning PSG in the short or medium term. New strategy? If the Qatari bid for Manchester United succeeds, “the plans for PSG would not change at all. The two clubs would be totally separate on the field and off it. The QIB is totally separate from QSI,” a source close to PSG’s owners insisted to AFP.

Last December, PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi also shut down any suggestion of a possible withdrawal when he said in an interview with the Financial Times “we have a long-term project here”.

At the same time, Khelaifi admitted the French champions had been in discussions with several investors about potentially selling a 15 percent stake. “Qatar is capable of persisting with the two clubs. That doesn’t mean that it is finished with PSG. It is above all a demonstration of Qatar’s power that it is able to show an interest in a club like Manchester United,” Raphael Le Magoariec, who specialises in the Gulf and sport at Tours University in France, told AFP.

“It is unlikely that they would withdraw from Paris because that would be seen as a failure.” Nevertheless the dispute with Paris city council over PSG’s attempts to buy their Parc des Princes stadium from the local authority has left a bitter taste with the club’s owners. Qatar, according to Le Magoariec, “has invested a lot and thinks that its generosity is not being respected”.

Despite that, the ties between France and Qatar, which possesses stakes in numerous French multinational corporations, make it unlikely the country will divert its capital away from a club like PSG.

“Paris is the type of platform which gives Qatar standing in the world,” says Le Magoariec. Yet it is possible a slight change in strategy at PSG is taking place, given the club is being closely watched by UEFA to ensure they fall in line with the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules of European football’s governing body.

The club made huge losses last season of 370 million euros and has an enormous wage bill, weighed down by the salaries of superstars Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar. “There is maybe less investment.

They have already tightened their belts because of FFP constraints,” said Guegan. “But they are going to open up to foreign investors, and depending on the identity of these investors we will see if the club continues to be an asset in Qatar’s strategy of visibility or if they move on to a different stage.”

Antoine Griezmann appeals to team supporters to stop demonstrating against club owners

Antoine Griezmann says Atletico Madrid fans’ ongoing demonstrations against the club’s owners have made it more challenging for the team to play at home. Some Rojiblancos fans frequently chant and whistle in opposition to the club’s ownership, particularly Miguel Angel Gil Marin and his family, and they have demanded that the CEO leave the organisation.

According to Football Espana, Griezmann has now requested that the fans end their protest because it is harming the team.

“Ultimately, it’s about streaks, and I hope I can score more goals, but it’s true that it’s more difficult here because of the fans.

“I hope they can fix it as soon as possible because we need them. With them, no doubt we can go much further.” Atletico Madrid moved within two points of Real Sociedad in third and maintained a four-point gap over Real Betis in fifth in their bid for Champions League qualification.

Griezmann strike earns Atletico win Meanwhile, Griezmann scored a brilliant late goal to claim a battling 1-0 win against Athletic Bilbao at the Wanda Metropolitano on February 19, Sportstar reports.

It was only their fifth home victory in a difficult season that saw them eliminated from the UCL in the group stage and the Copa del Rey in the quarter-finals.

Coach Galtier sends strong message to players ahead of second leg clash against Bayern Griezmann’s goal was his 14th in 30 games against Bilbao, the most the French forward has scored against any team in his professional career. Griezmann praised by France coach Sports Brief also reported on Griezmann being one of France’s most important players, since making his debut for Les Bleus in February 2014.

The Atletico Madrid forward has come in handy in several positions for France, including leading striker, attacking midfielder, winger, and central midfielder. Griezmann currently occupies the midfield with Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot, in absence of the injured Paul Pogba and Ngolo Kanté

Ronaldo vs Messi: David Beckham chooses Messi over Ronaldo

After dominating European football for nearly two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have both been referred to as the greatest players of their generation by their supporters.

The two have amassed numerous team and individual championships throughout their careers, making them the most Ballon d’Or winners with five and seven, respectively.

The argument over which of the two is superior has been raging for more than ten years.

Beckham is the most recent player to weigh in on which of the two superstars is superior.

In an earlier interview with ESPN Argentine, via Tribuna, the Manchester United legend admitted that the Argentine was in a class of his own: “It has to be Messi,” Beckham said. I love Leo for many different reasons. I love him because he’s a great father. I love him because he’s a great personality, a character. He’s a great person. “But I think what everybody loves about him is the way he plays the game.

He plays the game with passion. He plays the game just free the way he plays. “And I think this past World Cup again. I think the way he played for his team, for his country, and to win that World Cup was an incredible moment for him. And I love watching players like him.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea legend, Joe Cole has picked Lionel Messi ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo as the greatest player in the history of football, Daily Post reports.

Joe Cole insists that neither Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo nor the late Diego Maradona can be compared to the Argentine World Cup star.

Messi’s victory with Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, according to the former England international, has put the debate between the Paris Saint-Germain superstar and Ronaldo to rest. Fernando Torres settles GOAT debate Earlier, Sports Brief reported the football world continues to be divided on who’s the greatest of all time between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The decades-long debate continues to rage on, with former and current footballers weighing in with thoughts on who’s better between both superstars. Former Liverpool and Chelsea forward Fernando Torres picked Messi ahead of Ronaldo, thereby staking his claim on the debate on which of the superstars is superior.

Thuram readies to leave Gladbach for free amid Chelsea and Inter interest

Marcus Thuram is expected to leave Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of the season on a free transfer, with Chelsea and Inter reportedly showing interest.

The France international’s contract expires at the end of June, and Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus made it clear Sunday that Gladbach stand to lose him.

Thuram has reportedly drawn interest from a number of elite clubs in Europe, with Inter reportedly leading the charge alongside Chelsea and Gladbach’s Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.

Only five players in Germany’s top division have more goal involvements than the 25-year-old, who has 11 goals and three assists so far this season.

Virkus appeared to acknowledge in his interview with Sport1 that Gladbach’s attempts to keep the talented Lilian Thuram’s son were likely to fail.

He said: “With Marcus Thuram we stretched. We have to accept that when there are even bigger clubs where Marcus might go.”

Virkus added: “The fact that players will leave us for free is not a positive situation, and I can’t sugarcoat it.”

Gladbach sit eighth in the Bundesliga after Thuram scored in a 3-2 victory over 10-man Bayern on Saturday.

  • Ederson hits out at Norwegian’s critics

Ederson hits out at Norwegian’s critics

Manchester City needs a striker, and claims that Erling Haaland only scores “easy” goals are “a lie,” according to his teammate Ederson.

Since joining City from Borussia Dortmund last year, Haaland has scored 32 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions, which is more than any other player from one of the top five leagues in Europe.

In the Premier League, he has scored 26 goals, but the 22-year-old has recently come under fire as City struggles to overtake Arsenal and Manchester United in the race for the championship.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said Haaland “might have picked the wrong club,” while Arsenal great Thierry Henry speculated that Tottenham’s Harry Kane might have been a better fit for City.

However, Ederson believes Haaland is well-suited to City’s style, though he acknowledges Pep Guardiola’s men have had to adapt to his characteristics.

“When he arrived, we said he was going to score a lot—and that’s been happening.” “He is a brilliant goalscorer; he always looks to score and help the team,” Ederson told UEFA.com.

“He is the striker we needed because, in comparison to Gabriel [Jesus], they are different players.” Gabi likes to come in from out wide; he is stronger and more versatile. Haaland plays more centrally, looking to get into the box, he is a target in the area.

“That has been the major difference. When you get into the final third you have someone who will always be in the area.

“Many people say most of the goals he scores are easy—but that is a lie.” It’s his positioning—that’s his best ability. He doesn’t score easy goals, he positions himself very well.

“I hope he continues to score many goals, making us happy, and we’ll keep working together for all the titles.”

City return to Champions League action when they visit RB Leipzig for the first leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday, and with Haaland netting 28 times in 23 appearances in the competition throughout his career, the club hope his finishing ability will help deliver their first European crown.

Ederson is in no doubt as to the importance of continental success to City, saying: “That’s our main objective, the main objective of the club.

“We’ve been trying [to win it] and will carry on trying. We haven’t won it yet, we reached the final [in 2021], and a few semi-finals, and we didn’t come out of it with a good result.

“But I think this year, we’re more than capable of getting to the final and challenging for the title.

“Now this title is what the club needs, it’s what we athletes need and it’s what Guardiola needs here at the club, too. This year, we’re going to try. We’re going after it.”

Haaland scored six goals in four appearances against Leipzig during his time with Dortmund, averaging a goal every 60 minutes against them.

  • Alessandro Costacurta labels Napoli as the best team in Europe

Alessandro Costacurta labels Napoli as the best team in Europe

Alessandro Costacurta, a legend of the Champions League, said Napoli can “dream big” about being the best team in Europe.

The Partenopei are getting ready for Tuesday’s first-leg match against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Napoli has never advanced past that point, but this year they have never appeared more capable.

In addition to dominating their Champions League group, Luciano Spalletti’s team is currently 15 points clear at the top of Serie A.

Napoli won five of their six European matches before the World Cup break, thrashing Liverpool 4-1 and Ajax 6-1 along the way.

The competition will ramp up now, but Costacurta, who was a five-time European champion with Milan, does not see any team better than Napoli.

“I don’t want this to pass as nonsense, but in terms of approach and attitude, Napoli are the strongest in Europe,” he told Il Mattino.

“Obviously there are the others, and we know perfectly well that a competition like the Champions League is capable of drawing out of the players those motivations that maybe don’t exist in the league. But I’m sure about one thing.

“At the moment, Napoli are stronger than Manchester City and all the others.”

Costacurta added: “The strongest teams in Europe have not yet given great shows of strength in their leagues.

“That’s why I’m convinced that right now Napoli have an attitude that legitimately allows them to be able to dream big.”

Napoli have been inspired by their exciting attacking duo of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen.

“He’s an incredible player and I don’t know where he came from,” the former defender said. “Where the hell was he up until six months ago?”

Napoli’s dominance in Italy has been aided by difficult seasons for many of their rivals, but Costacurta suggested Inter’s Serie A form showed they are “distracted” by the Champions League.

“For Napoli, I dream of a spectacular final with PSG, because in this way you enter a different dimension of history,” he said.

“But I admit that I would also like a good all-Italian final also, because if we want to be honest, I’m the only one who played a semi-final and a final against another Italian team in the Champions League.”

Benzema joins Real Madrid’s squad for Liverpool trip

Toni Kroos and Aurlien Tchouameni, two crucial midfielders for Real Madrid, won’t be travelling to Liverpool with the team, but Karim Benzema has been called up.

The Ballon d’Or winner from the previous year, Karim Benzema, missed Saturday’s victory over Osasuna due to an  injury hit campaign.

The 35-year-old, who has 14 goals this season, returned to training before Tuesday’s Champions League match at Anfield, and as a result, he has been added to Carlo Ancelotti’s travelling party.

Madrid won’t be able to use Kroos or Tchouameni, though.

The two injured players did not participate in the game against Osasuna and were not on Madrid’s roster, which was announced on Monday.

Ancelotti will be hoping Kroos and Tchouameni return to fitness in time to face city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday in LaLiga, with a Copa del Rey Classico against Barcelona following on March 2.

Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 in last season’s Champions League final, a match that was overshadowed by policing issues outside of the Stade de France.

Vinicius Junior scored the only goal as Thibaut Courtois turned in a fine display to help Madrid claim a 14th European crown.

The second leg of the last-16 tie will take place at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 15.

NBA: Jayson Tatum hits record 55 points causing a win against Team LeBron

Team Giannis defeated Team LeBron 184-175 in the NBA’s annual showcase,  thanks to Jayson Tatum’s 55-point performance, labelled as an All-Star Game record.

Tatum, a forward for the Boston Celtics, broke Anthony Davis’s previous mark of 52 points, earning him the title of most valuable player (MVP).

After hurting his right little finger, opposition captain LeBron James was forced to sit out the second half.

“It means the world,” Tatum, now a four-time All-Star, said of his record.

“You think of all the legends and great players that have played this game.

“In all honesty, records are made to be broken.” “I’ll hold it as long as I can, but I’m certain somebody will come along in a couple years and try to break it.”

Tatum’s Celtics team-mate Jaylen Brown led Team LeBron with 35 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while James exited on 13 points after hitting his finger against the rim while trying to block a shot.

Los Angeles Lakers star James now shares the All-Star selections record of 19 with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but defeat in Salt Lake City on Sunday was his first of six All-Star games as captain.

Winning captain Giannis Antetokounmpo scored the first points of the night with a dunk after 15 seconds before sitting out the rest of the game after spraining his right wrist in the Milwaukee Bucks’ final regular-season game.

With Team Giannis leading 158-141 at the end of the third quarter, a target score for victory of 182 was set, which was 24 points higher than the winning side’s score at that stage, an addition representing Kobe Bryant’s shirt number during much of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers.

And it was Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers who drained the decisive three-pointer to secure the victory.

  • Chelsea needs to win, chances ‘doesn’t really mean anything’ – Chilwell

Chelsea needs to win, chances ‘doesn’t really mean anything’ – Chilwell

Ben Chilwell has acknowledged that the players at Chelsea are entirely to blame for the team’s abysmal string of performances.

Graham Potter was under even more pressure after Saturday’s shocking 1-0 home loss to Southampton, and some Stamford Bridge supporters heckled the team at the end of the game.

Chilwell, who came out following the game to thank the fans who remained until the final whistle with fellow England international Mason Mount, believes the team is to blame.

The left-back said, “It is easy to say, but we really do have to work hard and turn this around.” James Ward-Prowse’s free kick did us in. We are the only ones who are capable of doing that.

“It is never nice for a very competitive group that wants to win stuff. Some of us a few years ago tasted winning a major trophy [the Champions League] and to be in this situation now does not feel good at all.

“It is understandable the fans are not happy. They expect Chelsea to win matches, which we also expect.

“I can stand here and say we created chances but it doesn’t really mean anything. We need to win these games.

“We need to work hard. It is a pretty flat dressing room at the moment.

“It is hard to get into it, in terms of what we did right and wrong, but we have time now until our next game to work hard.”

To compound matters for Potter’s struggling side, who currently sit 10th in the Premier League, skipper Cesar Azpilicueta was rushed to hospital after being kicked in the head by Saints sub Sekou Mara.

The Spaniard received lengthy treatment on the pitch but was able to clap the home support as he was given a standing ovation while being carried off on a stretcher.

And Chilwell, 26, was delighted to learn his team-mate was in good spirits after the worrying incident.

He added: “I was one of the closest players to it and I saw it in real time, it definitely was not a nice situation.

“Thankfully us as players, and then the staff that came on, acted very quickly and tried to give him the best help we could.

“We found out he went off to hospital to do the necessary procedures in this situation.

“He is also in contact with his wife and is stable, which is a positive to take. We are all thinking of him and it is one of those things bigger than football. We are all here for him.”

Having picked up just two victories in their last 14 games in all competitions, Chelsea visit London rivals Tottenham on Sunday in what is fast becoming a must-win game.

  • New Zealand v England: Joe Root says first-Test innings gave him ‘little sharpener’

New Zealand v England: Joe Root says first-Test innings gave him ‘little sharpener’

English cricketer, Joe Root claims that the “kick up the backside” he received from his half-century in the second innings of England’s first-Test victory over New Zealand.

The former captain’s streak of seven Tests without a hundred  is his longest in the past two years.

He made 57 off 62 balls in Mount Maunganui, looking fluid as England defeated them by 267 runs.

“I’ve not performed for a little while, so I had the bit between my teeth in the second innings,” said Root.

“It’s given me a little sharpener, a kick up the backside, that this is how I need to play my cricket, how I can be consistently useful in this group.”

Root was in unmatched form from the start of 2021 to the middle of last summer, scoring 11 hundreds in 24 Test matches while averaging 61.

Even though his captaincy collapsed , with England winning just one of his final 17 Tests, his batting form held up well.

After relinquishing the captaincy in May of last year, Root’s form initially remained strong, with three hundreds in four Test matches.

However, Root’s form has declined as England has improved under Stokes—the victory at the Bay Oval was their 10th in 11 games.

The 32-year-old believes it will “take some time” for him to fully adjust to England’s ultra-aggressive style under Stokes.

“There was the initial relief of coming out of the captaincy and now I’m just trying to find out what my role is within this team,” said Root.

“I’ve maybe got a bit caught up in it, but I’m not too far away from what’s given me success. I didn’t feel I tried to force it in the second innings and when I’m playing well that’s one of my strengths: I can score freely and I can rotate the strike.

“I felt like I found a really good tempo in how I wanted to bat. “

Under the leadership of Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England’s swashbuckling batting has seen Root regularly reverse-scoop pace bowlers.

In the first innings at Mount Maunganui he executed the stroke against left-armer Neil Wagner and picked up a boundary. When he attempted the stroke again, he was caught at slip to be dismissed for 14.

But the Yorkshire player says that setback will not stop him from attempting the shot again in Test cricket.

“You take calculated risks,” said Root. “I’ve got where I’ve got to by trusting my gut. It just didn’t quite work out.

“It’s not going to stop me playing it. It’s now part of my Test game and I’ll continue to utilise it when it’s the right time.”

England will look to win the series in the second and final Test in Wellington, which begins on Friday (22:00 GMT Thursday).

The tourists are aiming for a seventh successive Test win, a feat not achieved by England since Michael Vaughan’s team won eight in a row in 2004.

New Zealand have recalled pace bowler Matt Henry, who missed the first Test because of the birth of his first child. Fellow seamer Jacob Duffy and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi have been released from the Black Caps’ squad.

Queen Camilla’s Health: King Charles says wife is ‘getting better’ after COVID-19 diagnosis

After a coronavirus test revealed the Queen Consort had the illness, King Charles stated she was “getting better.”

According to King Charles III, Queen Camilla is making progress following a COVID diagnosis.

The King, 74, made a fleeting remark about the condition of his wife while attending Milton Keynes’ celebration of becoming a city on Thursday. Wisher Tazmin Farringto visited Church of Christ the Cornerstone while out and about.

“After suffering the symptoms of a cold, Her Majesty The Queen Consort has tested positive for the Covid virus,” the palace said in a statement on Monday. “With regret, she has therefore cancelled all her public engagements for this week and sends her sincere apologies to those who had been due to attend them.”

The news came nearly a year to the day Camilla’s first COVID diagnosis was announced.

n asked the King how Camilla, 75, was doing.

“She’s getting better,” the sovereign said, according to Hello!.

Charles’ outing came three days after Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen Consort tested positive for the viral disease and would be canceling her week’s planned public engagements.

On Feb. 14, 2022, a spokesman at Clarence House said, “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall has tested positive for COVID-19 and is self-isolating. We continue to follow government guidelines.” The palace added at the time that Camilla was tripled-vaccinated.

The Queen Consort had planned to join her husband in Milton Keynes before her latest COVID diagnosis. There, Charles ignored protestors holding “Not My King” signs when he arrived at Church of Christ the Cornerstone.

Royals correspondent Richard Palmer of the Daily Express tweeted that there were about 20 demonstrators. The effort was organized by the anti-monarchy group Republic, which plans to protest King Charles’ coronation on May 6.

Despite jeers from the crowd gathered outside of King Charles III’s most recent engagement, he maintained his composure and continued.

The King, 74, visited Milton Keynes on Thursday to mark the city’s promotion to that status as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. Protesters held up yellow signs that said “Not My King” as he approached the Church of Christ the Cornerstone.

Twenty protesters, according to Daily Express Royals correspondent Richard Palmer’s tweet, were present. The anti-monarchy group Republic, which intends to demonstrate against King Charles’ coronation on May 6, organised the effort.

The King appeared to ignore the protestors and seemed to be in good spirits as he shook hands with people who came out to see him, some waving Union Jack flags. As seen in a video shared on Twitter by Heart News East, a chorus of “God Save the King” rang out in a show of support.

In December, King Charles kept his cool during a walkabout in Luton when an egg was allegedly thrown in his direction. He was greeting well-wishers gathered outside Luton Town Hall when an egg flew towards where he stood, the Associated Press reported. According to the outlet, protection officers redirected the royal to another point, where he continued shaking hands with the people who came out to see him. Bedfordshire Police said that a man in his 20s was detained and taken into custody, the BBC reported.

Similarly, in early November, the King and Queen Camilla were on a walkabout in York when someone in the crowd threw eggs in their direction, the projectiles landing just inches away. King Charles and Queen Camilla, both 75, were out at Micklegate Bar, a historic gateway in the northern English city where the monarch traditionally enters, when the food was thrown. A protester — who reportedly called out, “This country was built on the blood of slaves” — was detained by four police officers, according to the Northern Echo.

Charles followed in his late mother’s footsteps at the Church of Christ the Cornerstone. The hub was the first ecumenical city centre church in the U.K. and was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1992.

Inside, King Charles attended a reception to meet local groups dedicated to charity, business, faith, the environment and the arts in Milton Keynes, which is about a two-hour drive north of London. He then moved to the Milton Keynes Food Bank to learn more about the organization’s outreach and impact in the area.

The monarch gave a short speech, in which he said he was “delighted” to celebrate Milton Keynes’ new city status.

“So ladies and gentlemen, as you mark your well-deserved status as one of England’s newest cities, I can only offer my heartfelt congratulations and my very best wishes for the future,” he said.

The sovereign was alone during Thursday’s outing, as his wife, Queen Camilla, has tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time. Buckingham Palace announced the news Monday and confirmed the Queen Consort would be canceling her engagements for the rest of the week.

“After suffering the symptoms of a cold, Her Majesty The Queen Consort has tested positive for the COVID virus,” the palace said in a statement. “With regret, she has therefore cancelled all her public engagements for this week and sends her sincere apologies to those who had been due to attend them.”

King Charles Coronation: Prince Harry, Meghan Markle still expected to attend event

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are still expected to attend King Charles’ coronation at Westminster Abbey on May 6, which also happens to be their son Archie’s fourth birthday, despite the fact that many royal experts have cautioned that their attendance could be a distraction. This is true despite all the confessions in “Spare” and the Netflix “Harry & Meghan” docuseries, which aired in December last year.

A royal insider reportedly told the Daily Mail that the Sussexes will “definitely” be at the coronation, but should not expect any apologies or reconciliation talks. “Members of the family have told me that both Harry and Meghan will definitely come. They fully expect that,” the insider said, adding, “And they should realize that there is only one subject that many members of the royal family will be willing to discuss… and that’s the weather.”

Another insider previously told The Independent that Prince Harry and Meghan would of course be invited, but noted that “it would be very hard” for them to be there “given everything that has been said.” Another source told The Mirror that Prince Harry doesn’t want to get on a plane to the U.K. until he has a summit with his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William.

“Harry has been very clear and his position hasn’t wavered—he isn’t going to come if he feels the atmosphere will be as toxic as it was during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and funeral,” the source said. “He’s said he wants to reconcile with his family, and it’s their call, but so far nothing has changed.”

King Charles allegedly ‘never wanted’ Meghan Markle to be a working royal

Although the royal family was reportedly hurt and blindsided when Prince Harry, 38, and Meghan Markle, 41, shockingly announced that they would be stepping down as working royals in January 2020, rumour has it that King Charles never actually wanted Meghan to be a working royal in the first place and actually wanted her to “carry on working” as an actress. Wow!

The unexpected revelation came from the Duke of Sussex himself, when recalling a conversation he had with his father about Meghan’s future in the royal family in his bombshell memoir, Spare.

When recalling a conversation he and his father had, King Charles reportedly asked his son, “Does she want to carry on working?” to which Prince Harry replied, “Say again?” King Charles then reportedly replied, “Does she want to keep on acting?” which led Prince Harry to say, “Oh. I mean, I don’t know. I wouldn’t think so. I expect she’ll want to be with me, doing the job, you know, which would rule out Suits… since they film in… Toronto.”

King Charles then allegedly said, “Hmm. I see. Well, darling boy, you know there’s not enough money to go around.” Prince Harry then wrote in his memoir that he “stared” at his father after he said this, and then thought, “What was he banging on about? He explained. Or tried to. ‘I can’t pay for anyone else. I’m already having to pay for your brother and Catherine.’”

Angkorian crown jewellery: Stolen Cambodian antiquity resurfaces in London

It has been revealed that a sizable cache of Angkorian crown jewellery from Cambodia, some of which date as far back as the 7th Century, reemerged in London last summer.

The smuggled antiquities belonged to Douglas Latchford, a well-known antiquities trafficker.

The majority of the jewellery, according to experts, has never been seen before, and its presence is astounding.

The collection has been covertly transported back to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and will soon be put on display in the nation’s museum.

In 2020, Latchford passed away while he was being tried in the US. After his death, his family promised to give Cambodia his stolen collection, but the authorities had no idea what would be given or how it would be done.

Brad Gordon, the head of Cambodia’s investigative team, became the first representative of the nation to see the jewellery when he visited London last summer. He told the BBC: “I was driven by a representative of the Latchford family to an undisclosed location.” In the parking lot was a vehicle with four boxes inside.

“I felt like crying. I just thought – wow – the crown jewels of ancient Cambodian civilization packed into four boxes in the back of a car.”

When it was all unwrapped, the resurfaced collection was found to contain 77 pieces of gold and jewel-encrusted jewellery, including crowns, belts and earrings. A large bowl is thought to date to the 11th Century and although it has yet to be tested, appears to be made of solid gold. Experts believe it could have been used as a rice bowl for Angkorian royalty.

Image caption: It’s possible some of the jewellery was looted from temples such as Angkor Wat

One of the crowns appears to be from the pre-Angkorian period, experts believe, and could have been made by artisans in the 7th Century. Other items, including a small sculpted flower, pose a mystery. Experts simply don’t know why it was made or how it was used.

It’s still unclear exactly how and when the jewellery was stolen and how it made its way to London. Many of the items can be matched to stone carvings in the walls of Angkor Wat, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The largest religious monument in the world, its construction began in 1122 as a dedication to the Hindu God Vishnu, though it transitioned into a Buddhist temple decades later.

Angkor Wat was heavily looted during the French colonial period. However, many of Cambodia’s other temples were looted during the Khmer Rouge era in the 1970s, and the turmoil that continued for decades.

Archaeologist Sonetra Seng studied Angkorian jewellery for years by examining temple carvings. Finally, she can hold the real thing.

“The jewellery proves what was on the carvings and what was rumoured is really true. Cambodia was really, really rich in the past,” she says. “Still, I can’t believe it, especially that it’s from one single collection found abroad.”

Some of the jewellery had surfaced before; Douglas Latchford included five items from the collection in a book titled Khmer Gold that he co-wrote with his collaborator, Emma Bunker, in 2008. Khmer antiquities expert Ashley Thompson describes this book and two others as elaborate sales brochures, giving private collectors a taste of what was being sold illegally behind the scenes.

“Publishing these materials, inviting other scholars to contribute and comparing the items to museum pieces was a way of validating them and associating them with known materials already in museums and effectively enhancing their value,” she explained.

Ms Thompson, a professor in South East Asian art at SOAS University of London, says it will take a long time for experts to piece together where the newly discovered jewellery really came from because the book contains so many half-truths.

“You certainly can’t take for granted anything that is said about the provenance or the current ownership,” she explained, as she flipped through the book and pointing to the way in which Latchford and Bunker described the ownership of the different pieces of jewellery. “Private Thai collection, private London collection, private New York collection, private Japanese collection etc. You have to be very wary.”

The Cambodian authorities believe that more Angkorian jewellery is yet to be found. The Cambodians have evidence from Latchford’s email correspondence that he was attempting to secretly sell the collection from a north London warehouse as late as 2019.

We asked London’s Metropolitan Police if Latchford’s UK associates are also being investigated. They declined to comment – noting they do not identify anyone under investigation prior to being charged with a criminal offence.

Last year, the BBC travelled to Cambodia to meet looters turned government witnesses who identified items they say they stole from temples and sold to Latchford. Some of those items have been matched by investigators to museum pieces that are now in respected UK institutions like the British Museum and the V&A.

One of the women the BBC interviewed then – nicknamed Iron Princess – will also work to help identify some of the jewellery.

For now, the collection’s return will be welcomed by the country’s autocratic leader, Hun Sen. An election is coming up in July, and since his ruling party has effectively dismantled the opposition, this development will be painted as something Hun Sen has done to benefit his people.

Politics aside, ordinary Cambodians want all the looted items back. After decades hidden inside dusty boxes, it will soon go on public display in Phnom Penh, allowing this jewellery to shine once again.

  • Akufo-Addo’s silence on Gabby’s attack on Sophia worrying – ASEPA

Akufo-Addo’s silence on Gabby’s attack on Sophia worrying – ASEPA

Mensah Thompson, the executive director of ASEPA, claimed that a recent assault on retired Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo was regrettable, but that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s remarks on the subject are even more troubling.

On February 15, Thompson stated to Metro TV news that it appeared the president and the presidency had approved of Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko’s attack on the former CJ.

Otchere-Darko is a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Akufo-Addo, office of president, nobody has come out to issue a statement to categorically dissociate themselves from the statement of Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

“What it shows is that there is a certain level of tacit approval and support on the part of government and President Akufo-Addo for the comments of Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

“So, you will see that Gabby was insulting the Chief Justice on behalf of the president and that is the gospel truth. But who am I to intervene in a fight between two elephants?” he quizzed.

Thompson described Gabby as delusional and a spin doctor for government.

“Gabby has always been delusional we all know and we know one job he has been doing for this government is (as) a spin doctor. If you follow Gabby on social media, he is a spin doctor.

“What he does is that, he does damage control, political calumny, tries to drive attention from substantive issues, tries to set political agenda and try to dissuade people from taking certain decisions,” he stressed.

Gabby gets served by Sophia Akuffo

The ex-Chief Justice has become topical in the last few weeks after she joined colleague pensioner bondholders who had been picketing at the Ministry of Finance since February 6 demanding total exclusion from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP.)

Mrs. Akuffo’s involvement also saw her slam government’s handling of the programme and the general economic situation of the country.

She received heavy backlash via social media from New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

In her second appearance at the picket this week, she responded to Gabby’s critique among others by referring to him as a nuisance who did not matter to her and her life.

Meanwhile, government has closed the subscription window for the DDEP announcing an 85% subscription rate.

Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta told picketing pensioners on February 15 that their maturing coupons will be honoured even though they had opted against signing up, as in self-exempted from the programme.

Ofori-Atta appeared before Parliament to answer questions over the programme on February 16, 2023.

  • China likely to supply Russia with weapons – USA’s Blinken says

China likely to supply Russia with weapons – USA’s Blinken says

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has stated that China is considering providing Russia with arms and ammunition for the conflict in Ukraine.

According to Mr. Blinken, Chinese businesses are already offering “non-lethal support” to Russia, and new data suggests Beijing may do the same.

He cautioned China that this escalation would have “serious consequences.”

Moscow reportedly requested military hardware, but China has denied this.

Despite being a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping has not yet denounced Russia’s invasion and has advocated for peace.

China’s foreign ministry said it would not accept “finger pointing” and “coercion” from the US over its relations with Russia.

Mr Blinken was speaking to CBS after he met China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference.

He said that during the meeting he expressed “deep concerns” about the “possibility that China will provide lethal material support to Russia.”

“To date, we have seen Chinese companies… provide non-lethal support to Russia for use in Ukraine. The concern that we have now is based on information we have that they’re considering providing lethal support,” he said.

He did not elaborate on what information the US had received about China’s potential plans. When pressed on what the US believed China might give to Russia, he said it would be primarily weapons as well as ammunition.

The US has sanctioned a Chinese company for allegedly providing satellite imagery of Ukraine to the mercenary Wagner Group, which supplies Russia with thousands of fighters.

Mr Blinken told CBS that, “of course, in China, there’s really no distinction between private companies and the state.”

If China provided Russia with weapons, that would cause a “serious problem for us and in our relationship”, he added.

Relations between Washington and Beijing were already poor after the US shot down an alleged Chinese spy balloon in early February. Both sides exchanged angry words, but equally both sides appeared embarrassed by the incident and seemed ready to move on.

But if China were to deliver weapons to help Russian forces in Ukraine, then US-Chinese relations would deteriorate much more severely.

It would be the most “catastrophic” thing that could happen to the relationship between the two giants, said top Republican senator Lindsay Graham.

“It would be like buying a ticket on the Titanic after you saw the movie,” he told ABC News. “Don’t do this.”

Mr Blinken’s warning seems to be clearly designed to deter China from doing that.

Mr Blinken also said the US was worried about China helping Russia evade Western sanctions designed to cripple Russia’s economy. China’s trade with Russia has been growing, and it is one of the biggest markets for Russian oil, gas, and coal.

Nato members, including the US, are sending a variety of weapons, ammunition and equipment to Ukraine, including tanks. They have stopped short of sending fighter jets, and Mr Blinken would not be drawn on whether the US would help other countries supply jets.

“We’ve been very clear that we shouldn’t fixate or focus on any particular weapons system,” he said.

He did, however, say that the West must ensure Ukraine had what it needed for a potential counter offensive against Russia “in the months ahead”. Russia is currently trying to advance in eastern regions of Ukraine, where some of the fiercest fighting of the war has taken place.

The top US diplomat’s remarks come ahead of a scheduled visit by Mr Wang to Moscow, as part of the Chinese foreign policy chief’s tour of Europe.

Mr Wang said in Munich on Saturday that China had “neither stood by idly nor thrown fuel on the fire” for the Ukraine war, Reuters reported.

China would publish a document that laid out its position on settling the conflict, Mr Wang said. The document would state that the territorial integrity of all countries must be respected, he said.

“I suggest that everybody starts to think calmly, especially friends in Europe, about what kind of efforts we can make to stop this war,” Mr Wang said.

He added that there were “some forces that seemingly don’t want negotiations to succeed, or for the war to end soon”, but did not say who he meant.

The Chinese President, Mr Xi, is scheduled to deliver a “peace speech” on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Friday, 24 February, according to Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani.

Mr Tajani told Italian radio that Mr Xi’s speech would call for peace without condemning Russia, Reuters reported.

During their meeting, Mr Blinken and Mr Wang also exchanged strong words on the deepening row over an alleged Chinese spy balloon that was shot down over the US.

Mr Blinken said during the meeting that the US would not “stand for any violation of our sovereignty” and that “this irresponsible act must never again occur.”

Mr Blinken told CBS that other nations were concerned about what he called China’s “surveillance balloon program” across five continents.

Mr Wang, meanwhile, called the episode a “political farce manufactured by the US” and accused them of “using all means to block and suppress China”. China has denied sending a spy balloon.

And on Sunday morning, Beijing warned that the US would “bear all the consequences” if it escalated the argument over the balloon. China would “follow through to the end” in the event “the US insists on taking advantage of the issue,” it said in a foreign ministry statement reported by Reuters.

The full interview with CBS, the BBC’s US broadcasting partner, is due to air on Sunday.

Govt will ensure Christian Atsu gets befitting burial – Bawumia

A state funeral will be held for the late Christian Atsu, according to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The late Ghanaian international football player perished tragically on February 6 as a result of a powerful earthquake that shook parts of Turkey and Syria.

On the evening of February 19, during a brief ceremony to receive the late Atsu’s remains from Turkey, Dr. Bawumia declared that the nation had lost an accomplished son who would be missed.

“It is a very sad day that we are here to receive the remains of our brother, Christian Atsu. The earthquake that struck Turkey was devastating, and we prayed every day that passed for our brother to be found, but when he was found, he was no more,” he said.

“He was much loved, and we will surely miss him.” “It is a very painful loss, and we pray that the soul of our brother rests in the bosom of our maker,” he added.

The vice president also thanked the family for their efforts and Ghanaians for their support in transporting the remains of the player back to Ghana.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the entire family for their loss, and I would like to say that the state will be fully involved with the family in providing him a befitting burial,” Bawumia declared.

  • US finalizes recovery of downed Chinese balloon debris

US finalizes recovery of downed Chinese balloon debris

China disputes US officials’ claims that the debris confirms their suspicions that the balloon was used for surveillance.

A large Chinese balloon that the US shot down earlier this month off the coast of South Carolina has all of its debris recovered. Despite China’s denials, analysis to date indicates that the balloon was used for surveillance.

Officials claim that the US is confident that Navy, Coast Guard, and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) personnel have recovered all of the balloon’s wreckage from the ocean floor, including crucial payload gear that might reveal what data the payload was able to monitor and collect.

The US Northern Command stated in a statement on Friday that the balloon’s final remains were being sent to the FBI for study and that recovery efforts had concluded on Thursday.

In a statement on Friday, the US Northern Command said that the last remnants of the balloon were being sent to the FBI for study, and that recovery efforts had concluded on Thursday.

“Final pieces of debris are being transferred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation Laboratory in Virginia for counterintelligence exploitation, as has occurred with the previous surface and subsurface debris recovered,” according to the statement.

The end of the recovery efforts came after several weeks of tense relations between Beijing and Washington, with China denying that the balloon was for surveillance purposes and accusing the US of overreaction.

Speaking to MSNBC News on Friday in Munich, US Vice President Kamala Harris said the US was confident that the balloon was being “used by China to spy on the American people”.

“That balloon was not helpful, which is why we shot it down,” Harris said.

The incident heightened tensions between the US and China.

Chinese military officials refused calls from their US counterparts after the balloon was shot down.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed a scheduled visit to China following the balloon incident, which he said “undermined” the purpose of the trip. It has not been rescheduled.

However, the Biden administration has also said that the US is not seeking conflict with China, which has the second-largest economy in the world after the US and is seen as essential for tackling global issues such as the climate crisis.

“We are not looking for a new cold war,” Biden said in remarks on Thursday. “I expect to be speaking with President Xi. I hope we are going to get to the bottom of this, but I make no apologies for taking down that balloon.”

The US has also shot down three unidentified objects in US and Canadian airspace over the last several weeks, in a series of bizarre incidents that have prompted speculation and rumours about the origin and nature of the objects.

On Thursday, Biden said that the objects were harmless and probably connected to private entities or research, adding that it is not likely that the three objects were connected to the Chinese balloon that the US shot down off the coast of South Carolina on February 4.

Tensions between the two countries are not new: China and the US have previously traded accusations over issues like trade and technology, human rights violations, and China’s desire to bring the self-governing island of Taiwan under its control.

  • Tunisian government allegedly targets government critics

Tunisian government allegedly targets government critics

The crackdown on President Saied’s detractors has drawn criticism from around the world and raised concerns about a return to autocracy.

As she describes how her husband, Abdelhamid Jelassi, a former politician from the Ennahdha party, was taken into custody from their home in the Tunisian capital, Mounia Brahim trembles.

“About 8pm Saturday [February 11], there was a banging on the garden gate. In the time it took my husband to walk to the front gate [to see who it was], uniformed policemen were climbing over our garden wall, then walked straight into our apartment, taking his phone and iPad and my mobile and laptop,” she said.

Jelassi is among several people whose often-violent, night-time detentions have shocked the country and drawn international condemnation while raising fears over a crackdown on dissent. They include those with ties to the opposition, critics of President Kais Saied, businessmen, the head of a leading radio station, lawyers and a former diplomat.

Brahim said the men showed neither any police IDs nor a warrant even when she demanded, but she noted they were wearing the civil police uniform.

“They told me they were from the Ministry of Interior but wore civil police uniform,” she added, and then they took her husband. He is currently being held in pre-trial detention in Mornaguia prison.

    ‘Another round of dictatorship’

For Brahim, this is history repeating itself. She said she and her husband were imprisoned and tortured under Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the former president who fled the country in 2011 following protests against his oppressive rule.

“We’ve returned to another round of dictatorship, but this time it is much tougher,” she said.

Referring to what felt like a home invasion, she added, “I feel that there is no longer any dignity. I’m under surveillance and I really fear for my safety.”

That same night, Khayam al-Turki, a member of the centre-left Ettakatol (Democratic Forum for Labour and Liberties) party, was taken from his house after midnight and is currently detained under terrorism laws from 2015.

Like al-Turki, businessman Kamal Ltaief, reputed to be a powerful lobbyist, was also held under the counterterrorism law.

Ltaief, who was once very close to Ben Ali and helped him rise to power in 1987, survived investigations during the 2011 revolution to continue his business and investment interests.

Former diplomat William Lawrence, a professor at the American University in Washington, DC, told Al Jazeera: “Ltaief likes to call himself Tunisia’s de facto vice president after 1989 [and] has been described as a power broker or kingmaker, he has that skill of brokering deals.”

Al-Turki’s lawyer, Ridha Bel Hadj, said his arrest is related to his meeting with two American diplomats. The police case notes mention the licence plate numbers of the diplomats’ cars, the lawyer said.

Bel Hadj explained that there has been no formal charge against al-Turki, but a suggestion of his “forming a criminal gang to harm the Tunisian state”.

“The case against them is empty. They are using the terrorism law to hold them for a maximum of 15 days without charge or consultation with a lawyer,” he said, explaining that it was used to gain time.

Presidential candidate Kais Saied speaks to the media at his campaign headquarters.

    Trampling dissent

Several arrests have been made since Saturday. Rights group Amnesty International has so far documented 10 arrests. Apart from politicians, those being held are accused of price fixing, market manipulation or creating food shortages.

Tunisians have for months been suffering from shortages of food – even basic necessities such as oil, sugar, milk and butter – with the government attempting to stave off bankruptcy while trying to negotiate a refinancing loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Saied has added fuel to the fire by accusing some of those detained recently of being responsible for the price increases and food shortages while pledging to “purify the country” using the justice system.

Chaima Aissa, a leader of the National Salvation Front, said al-Turki has been organising meetings of key opposition figures since December 27 to develop a roadmap to exit the crisis and rebuild the country.

Aissa is already facing charges of criticising the president on a radio interview under the cybercrime decree law of September 2022. She is currently at liberty, but under a travel ban awaiting trial in a military court and could potentially face years in jail if convicted.

Saied has faced criticism and scrutiny from both the international community and human rights groups for his use of military courts to try citizens.

“Saied is creating a diversion, he’s mixing political targets with criminal cases to give an impression that political actors are responsible for price rises and food shortages,” Aissa told Al Jazeera.

“Saied is using the terrorism act and price fixing accusations to get public sympathy, it’s pure populism,” said Bel Hadj, adding that it was merely a meeting of a group of politically like-minded people.

On Monday night, Ennahdha’s vice president and former justice minister, Nourredine Bhiri, 64, was taken into custody. The moderate Islamist party was the largest in parliament until the assembly was suspended in 2021 by Saied.

Bhiri had been previously arrested, and his location was only disclosed when he fell ill from being on a hunger strike. He was finally released in March 2022.

Bhiri’s lawyer Samir Dillou told Al Jazeera that police assaulted his wife, arrested him and later beat him in custody.

“His right shoulder was broken and he received other injuries to his leg,” said Dillou. “Surgery on his shoulder was delayed,” the lawyer added, also explaining the concerns as Bhiri is elderly, with diabetes and hypertension.

The arrest of Nourredine Battou, the director general of Mosaiq FM, the country’s largest radio network, on the night of February 13, has been condemned by the journalist and radio unions. He was known for giving a platform to those critical of Saied and his administration.

The radio station was a private company, but the state took part ownership after the 2011 revolution. Bel Hadj sees the arrest of Mosaiq FM’s head to gain control of its editorial line and silence critical debate and intimidate journalists.

On Thursday, the Tunisian journalists’ union SNJT demonstrated in front of government buildings, the Kasbah, denouncing the worsening working conditions and arrests.

Lawyers have also expressed concern over the surveillance that both Tunisian political figures and foreign diplomats are under.

Aissa noted that policing was back to the Ben Ali days when even being seen with a foreign journalist in a car was dangerous. “They could make up a charge against me. Saied has arrived at a new level of harassment, he’s creating an atmosphere of fear and people are really afraid.”

    A return to autocracy?

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed concern “over the deepening crackdown against perceived political opponents and civil society”, while the US State Department’s spokesperson Ned Price said “it is a core US principle that people around the world should be able to express themselves without fear or reprisal”.

Lawrence said diplomats “almost always know when they are being surveilled, it is a standard part of diplomatic practice”, adding that reports of surveillance would be followed up with an investigation.

“The issue is that the US is a major security ally of Tunisia and the US is spending a lot of money to bolster security forces including surveillance [since the 2015-16 terror attacks on Tunisia],” he said.

Tunisia is turning its enhanced surveillance capacity on Tunisian politicians meeting with US diplomats and then accusing them of conspiracy to harm the state, he noted, adding that “all that bodes very badly for the US-Tunisia relationship going forward”.

“If he [Saeid] wants to supplant the American role with the Russians or Chinese, it doesn’t help his case for Tunisia to be a good security partner with others in the future.”

Lawrence added that “if he does this today with the US he could do [it] tomorrow with another security partner, it is security and diplomatic malpractice”.

Speaking on Tunisian television on Thursday, Dillou said 14 lawyers, including himself, have been summoned for trial in March.

He believes that they are being targeted because they are representing political figures and critics, and “the number will possibly be increased. Some could be arrested even before the date set for their court appearance.”

There will be more arrests, Bel Hadj said. The president “is blocked inside his own political programme. I think Saied has no choice but to continue to exercise his authoritarian power.”

Turkey-Syria earthquake: Syrian family of seven perishes in fire

The Syrian family had relocated from the severely damaged city of Nurdagi in southeast Turkey to Konya in the region’s centre.

Local media reported that a Syrian family of seven, which included five children, perished in a fire that broke out in the Turkish home they had relocated to following last week’s earthquake.

The single-story home, where 14 people resided, caught fire on Friday, according to a written statement from the Konya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, according to the state-owned Anadolu Agency in Turkey. According to the report, seven accident victims were being treated.

According to Anadolu, just a few days prior, the family had relocated from the southeast Turkish city of Nurdagi in Gaziantep province to the central region of Konya.

“The necessary investigations were carried out at the scene and a committee of experts was appointed,” the statement said.

“We saw the fire but we could not intervene. A girl was rescued from the window,” resident Muhsin Cakir told Anadolu.

The five children who died were aged between four and 13, Anadolu said. Turkey is home to nearly four million Syrians.

Many of them live in southeastern regions devastated by last week’s disaster. The death toll from the quakes has surpassed 43,000 across southeastern Turkey and Syria.

Gaziantep, one of southern Turkey’s big cities, has a population of almost two million, and nearly one-third of them are Syrian refugees who fled the war in the Arab country that started in 2011.

On Thursday, the United Nations appealed for more than $1bn in funds for the earthquake relief operation in Turkey, just two days after an appeal for $400m for quake-hit Syria.

While rescue efforts have continued in Turkey, the number of people rescued daily has reduced significantly.

18 people found dead in abandoned truck in Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s government says at least 18 people, including a child, have been discovered dead inside an abandoned truck.

About 40 migrants appeared to have been being illegally transported by the vehicle. The survivors were transported to a hospital for medical attention.

According to the health minister, the people in the truck were chilly, damp, and hungry after several days.

It is thought to be the most fatal immigrant-related incident to have occurred in Bulgaria.

Large numbers of people attempting to enter the European Union from Turkey have long caused Bulgaria problems.

The truck, found near the village of Lokorsko, 12 miles (20 km) north-east of Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, was illegally transporting the migrants hidden under some wood, the interior ministry said.

Health Minister Asen Medzhidiev described the conditions inside the truck: “There has been a lack of oxygen for those who were locked in this truck.””They were freezing and wet, and they hadn’t eaten in days.”

Fourteen people found alive in the truck, including eight in serious condition, were taken to the hospital, he added, while another 10 people were found hiding nearby and would be taken to the hospital for examination.

Police are searching for the human traffickers believed to have driven the truck and fled, officials said.

Bulgaria has faced accusations that it is abusing people attempting to enter from Turkey, with asylum seekers saying they have been blocked, arrested, stripped, and beaten.

  • Haiti to receive warships from Canada amid ongoing violence

Haiti to receive warships from Canada amid ongoing violence

Since President Jovenel Moise was assassinated, Haiti gangs abduct three churchgoers after Mass, demand hefty ransom

As the Caribbean country of Haiti continues to suffer from economic and political unrest as well as violence, much of it fueled by organised criminal groups, Canada will send navy vessels there to gather intelligence.

At a gathering of Caribbean leaders on Thursday in the Bahamas, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the decision public. One of the subjects they discussed was the powerful armed gangs operating in the nation, which have generated numerous reports of murder, kidnapping, and sexual violence.

“Right now, Haiti is confronted with unrelenting gang violence, political turmoil and corruption,” Trudeau said. “Now is the moment to come together to confront the severity of this situation.”

The Canadian leader did not specify how many ships would take part in the effort or the duration of their mission. The announcement came during a meeting for CARICOM, the 15-member Caribbean trade bloc.

Haitian leaders including Prime Minister Ariel Henry have previously requested military assistance from the international community to help curb the escalating violence.

But some Haitians have pushed back against those calls, citing Haiti’s long and troubled history with foreign intervention.

Last Friday, United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk also called for an international force to help end the island’s “living nightmare”.

Haiti’s gangs have seen their power grow since the assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moise in July 2021. The UN estimated in December that 60 percent of the capital city of Port-au-Prince was under gang control.

For more than a month, starting last September, a powerful gang alliance known as the G9 Family and Allies also blockaded a key fuel terminal in the capital, effectively shutting down commerce for much of the city and sparking a humanitarian crisis.

With rubbish piling up and clean water growing scarce during the blockade, Haiti documented its first case of cholera in nearly three years. Since then, infections have shot up.

For many Haitians, the conditions amid the violence have become unbearable, with many seeking refuge abroad.

In January, the United States unveiled new rules that would allow up to 30,000 people a month to arrive from Nicaragua, Haiti, Venezuela and Cuba so long as they meet a strict set of requirements, including extensive vetting. But under the new programme, Haitians who try to cross into the US from Mexico would be turned away.

The UN has urged countries not to deport refugees and migrants back to Haiti, citing the dangerous conditions there.

Speaking at CARICOM on Thursday, Trudeau explained that Haiti’s plight “weighs heavily” on him. He also pledged $9.1m in humanitarian assistance, as well as $7.4m to help protect Haitian women and children along the country’s border with the Dominican Republic.

Tens of thousands of Haitians and people of Haitian descent have been deported from the Dominican Republic over the past year, despite international criticism against the removals.

Both Canada and the US have previously sent military hardware to the Haitian government and imposed sanctions on individuals accused of corruption or criminal ties in Haiti.

That tactic continued on Thursday, as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced further sanctions against “five individuals and seven family members” with links to criminal groups that “have threatened the livelihoods of the Haitian people and are blocking life-saving humanitarian support”.

Haiti’s Prime Minister Henry even suggested the US and Canada could lead the proposed foreign intervention. But neither country has offered to head such a force.

  • Germany’s busiest airport strikes stop almost all flights at 7

Germany’s busiest airport strikes stop almost all flights at 7

Most significant German airports, including the two busiest hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, are impacted in addition to Berlin’s. Participants include ground staff, employees from the public sector, and air traffic control.

Almost all passenger flights are being halted on Friday due to a 24-hour strike at seven major German airports.

A total of 294 flights have been cancelled, affecting about 295,000 passengers, including the foreign minister of Romania who was trying to attend the Munich Security Conference.

All regular passenger flights were halted at Germany’s two busiest hubs, Frankfurt and Munich, and airports in Bremen, Dortmund, Hamburg, Hanover, and Stuttgart were also affected by the strikes.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport was the largest hub spared the disruption, though it suffered a full-day warning strike late last month.

“When we look at the airport terminals this morning, it reminds us more of the worst days of coronavirus than of a warning strike,” Ralph Beisel of the ADV airports’ association told Bavarian public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk on Friday.

Airports and airlines have questioned the extent of the industrial action and its appropriateness, while the Verdi trade union said it needed to send a “strong signal.”

Beisel said the terminals were empty, with advanced warning for the strikes meaning the vast majority of affected passengers at least knew not to come to the airports.

International flights were for the most part rescheduled, domestic travelers were mainly offered replacement rail tickets.

    Who is on strike?

Ground personnel, air traffic controllers and public sector officials like firefighters are all on strike as part of major industrial action across multiple sectors by Germany’s second-largest trade union by membership, Verdi.

As the airports are state owned, most of their direct employees class as public sector employees, including IT officials, technicians and administrators, as well as ground staff like check-in or boarding assistants, refueling truck drivers or disabled passenger assistants.

This industrial action is a change of pace from the pilots’ strikes that led to repeated disruptions, particularly for the Lufthansa and Eurowings airlines, late last year.

Verdi is seeking improved pay and conditions for staff at airports in various functions, with a senior union representative saying the sector is hemorrhaging personnel even at a time when it is trying to recruit to fill gaps dating back to the serious reduction in air travel during the pandemic.

“If nothing changes on pay, then another chaotic summer awaits us all — and we must prevent that as a matter of urgency,” Verdi’s Christine Behle said on RBB-Inforadio early on Friday. “Many people did not just decide to switch workplaces during the pandemic, we all learnt that during last summer’s chaos.”

Ground staff went on strike on multiple occasions during 2022’s peak travel season in Germany, most notably during July.

A combination of staff shortages and rapidly recovering demand also led to chaos and overcrowding at a host of European airports, even on days with no industrial action.

Verdi announced Friday’s strike on Wednesday, saying the latest round of negotiations had brought little progress.

Medical, aid, military, and government flights still in the air

Although almost all regular passenger flights to the affected airports were halted, some other crucial services were still operating.

Medical transports, aid deliveries — for instance following the major earthquake hitting Turkey and Syria — military flights and government flights were still running as scheduled.

This was particularly important for Munich International Airport, as the 59th Munich Security Conference formally opens on Friday.

Most visiting leaders and delegates could still fly into Munich on board government planes.

However, Romania’s Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu, who was scheduled to fly in on a commercial plane, would have to fly to Austria and then take a roughly four-hour car ride to Munich for the event, Romania’s embassy said.

Tyre Nichols killing: Ex-US police officers plead not guilty

In Memphis, a 29-year-old black motorist was beaten to death, and five former officers are accused of second-degree murder.

Tyre Nichols was killed after a violent traffic stop in Memphis, which sparked protests and renewed calls for an end to police violence. In his death, five former US police officers have entered not guilty pleas.

On Friday, before a judge in Shelby County Criminal Court, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith made their first court appearances with their attorneys.

In relation to the videotaped arrest of Nichols on January 7, the former officers entered not guilty pleas to charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression.

The footage shows the officers beating the 29-year-old father and FedEx worker for three minutes in an assault that the Nichols family’s legal team likened to the 1991 police beating of Los Angeles motorist Rodney King, which was also videotaped.

“I am numb, just numb as I can be right now,” Nichols’s mother, RowVaughn Wells, said on Friday as she walked into the courtroom dressed in black.

After the court hearing, Wells dismissed the officers’ not-guilty plea, saying that it was expected.

“I’m going to leave it up to the district attorney’s office to get them prosecuted… and then they’ll find them guilty,” Wells told reporters outside the courtroom. “So, them saying they’re not guilty, that’s a preliminary thing. Everybody’s going to say that.”

She pledged to attend every session in court going forward.

“I want each and every one of those police officers to be able to look me in the face. They haven’t done that yet. They couldn’t even do that today. They didn’t even have the courage to look at me in my face after what they did to my son,” Wells said.

Nichols, who died in hospital three days after the traffic stop, attempted to converse with police as they shouted orders and threatened him with violence during the ordeal.

“You guys are really doing a lot right now. I’m just trying to go home,” he said at one point as he sat on the street and officers stood over him.

“Stop! I’m not doing anything,” Nichols said, just before breaking free and running.

When police caught up to him, he was beaten while being restrained, clubbed with a baton and kicked while on the ground. He cried out for his mother several times.

The five officers, all of whom are Black, have been fired from the police force, and the special unit they were members of has been disbanded. They were all released on bond as they await trial. Their next hearing has been scheduled for May 1.

“Be patient. Work with your attorneys,” Judge James Jones Jr said to the officers during Friday’s court appearance. “There may be some high emotions in this case.”

Nichols’s case has recalled the 2020 killing of George Floyd, who died when a police officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His death set off mass protests worldwide that demanded an end to racism and police brutality.

Memphis police said Nichols had been suspected of reckless driving, but no verified evidence of a traffic violation has emerged in public documents or in video footage.

The city’s police chief, Cerelyn “CJ” Davis, has said she has seen no evidence justifying the stop or the officers’ response. Davis also previously said the video footage of the fatal incident depicted “acts that defy humanity”.

One white officer who was also involved in the initial traffic stop has been fired while an additional officer who has not been identified has been suspended.

The Memphis case has stood out for the speed in which the officers were fired and charged.

On Friday, civil rights attorney Ben Crump – who is representing Nichols’ family – warned against “any unnecessary delays” in prosecuting the former officers. “It’s important that we move swiftly towards justice,” He told reporters.

  • Scholz, Macron joins Zelenskyy in Munich Security Conference open

Scholz, Macron joins Zelenskyy in Munich Security Conference open

This year’s gathering is centred on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Attending the annual high-level conference are representatives from 96 different nations.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, the main topic of discussion at this year’s high-level gathering, served as the backdrop for the opening of the annual Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Friday.

Representatives from 96 nations will discuss important defence topics over the coming days.

‘No alternative to Ukrainian victory’ — Zelenskyy

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the opening address by videolink and urged allies to speed up support for his country, warning that lives were hanging in the balance.

“We need to hurry up. We need speed — speed of our agreements, speed of our delivery… speed of decisions to limit Russian potential. There is no alternative to speed because it is the speed that the life depends on,” Zelenskyy told those gathered, stressing there was “no alternative to a Ukrainian victory.”

Zelenskyy likened the battle against Russia’s invasion to the biblical fight between David and Goliath and said that while Ukraine had David’s courage, it still needed the sling with which to defeat “the Russian Goliath.”

Scholz calls on allies to send tanks to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the conference that Putin’s “revisionism” would not prevail and called on allies who were in a position to do so, to send battle tanks to Ukraine.

“Those who can send such battle tanks should really do so now,” Scholz said.

In January, Germany approved the export of Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine from its own stocks as well as from third-party allies.

The German chancellor said that his country would provide support with training, supplies and logistics.

In a sentiment shared by other speakers, Scholz was of the opinion that there war in Ukraine would not be over soon.

“I think it’s wise to prepare for a long war,” Scholz told the conference.

‘Not the time for dialogue’ — Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron took the podium after the German leader and said there needed to be readiness for “prolonged conflict” in Ukraine, while calling on EU members to invest substantially in defense spending.

“We absolutely need to intensify our support and our effort to the resistance of the Ukrainian people and its army and help
them to launch a counter-offensive which alone can allow credible negotiations, determined by Ukraine, its authorities
    and its people”, Macron said

The French president also said that it was not the time to attempt dialogue with Russia as it ramped up hostilities in the east of Ukraine.

“It is not the time for dialogue because we have a Russia which has chosen war, which has chosen to intensify the war, and which has chosen to go as far as committing war crimes and to attacking civilian infrastructures,” Macron said.

Putin committed ‘breach of civilization’ — Heusgen

The conference is being chaired for the first time this year by Christoph Heusgen — former foreign policy advisor to ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel — and successor of Wolfgang Ischinger who served as chair for 15 years.

Heusgen began proceedings by saying the 2022 conference had closed with the hope that Russian President Vladimir Putin “would be impressed by the unity the international community demonstrated … We all know what happened,” Huesgen said.

“Vladimir Putin committed a breach of civilization,” the MSC chair said, adding that it was the first time since World War II, that a country in Europe “denied the right of existence of another country and started an all out war.”

First conference for Pistorius as German defense minister

Ahead of the conference, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reaffirmed the need to boost military funding by going beyond the target of 2% of gross domestic product, while highlighting the importance of the platform. The MSC “has always been a place of understanding and dialogue,” he said.

“What is new is that all this is taking place while a war is being waged on European soil by Russia against Ukraine,” Pistorius added.

It will be Pistorius’ first MSC in office, and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg’s last as he plans to step down from his post in October.

Participants at the conference include 40 heads of state and government and nearly 100 ministers.

    Who is attending?

Russia will again be a notable absence, with its leadership for the first time in two decades not being invited.

Other high-profile speakers expected on Friday include China’s top foreign policy official Wang Yi and US Vice President Kamala Harris.
