Help me find Nana Pooley’s killer – Kurt Okraku calls on public

GFA President Kurt Okraku has asked the public to help find the person responsible for the death of Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley.

The dedicated Asante Kotoko fan was stabbed during a league match between Nsoatreman FC and Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park.

Following the incident, the Ghana Premier League was put on hold, and Kotoko has refused to play until justice is done.

In his first meeting with Kotoko’s management since the tragedy, Mr. Okraku urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.

“When that tragic act occurred in Nsoatre, there was someone present with the person who took Nana Pooley’s life. That person must be honest with football and reveal the killer’s identity. It’s a painful moment, but also an opportunity to make a positive impact on our game,” he said.

Acknowledging the current difficulties facing Ghanaian football, Okraku expressed confidence in overcoming the challenges.

“I have always said that the journey to transform our football is tough and rough, and right now, we are facing one of our toughest moments. But we will get through it,” he added.

Meanwhile, the FA Cup Round of 16 matches will proceed as scheduled this weekend, though Asante Kotoko has opted out.

Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, was a devoted supporter of Asante Kotoko. Tragically, he was stabbed to death during a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko on February 5, 2025.

The incident occurred at the Nana Kronmansah Park, and it has sparked widespread calls for justice and accountability1.

Nana Pooley’s death has deeply affected the football community, with many mourning the loss of a passionate and dedicated fan.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, has condemned the violence and urged eyewitnesses to come forward to help identify the perpetrator. Asante Kotoko has also suspended their participation in the league until justice is served.

  • Let’s collaborate, no country has prospered on depending on handouts – Akufo-Addo to African leaders

Let’s collaborate, no country has prospered on depending on handouts – Akufo-Addo to African leaders

Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has once again urged African countries to work together to become self-sufficient instead of relying on foreign aid.

Speaking at the launch of former Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, Akufo-Addo stressed that African leaders should move away from depending on donors and instead focus on building strong partnerships and long-term economic plans.

“Too often, African nations look outside for solutions when the answers lie within our own borders,” he stated. “We must reject the notion that aid is the key to our development. No country has ever achieved lasting prosperity by depending on handouts.”

His remarks come amid rising concerns over Africa’s economic vulnerabilities, including inflation, debt burdens, and global supply chain disruptions. Most of these vulnerabilities occasioned in part by the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic hardships of African countries has been underlying.

The former ECOWAS Chair encouraged African countries to focus on trade and investment within the continent, saying that true development comes from working together and becoming self-sufficient.

He pointed to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a key opportunity to boost Africa’s economy and drive growth.

“If we are to move beyond our historical economic challenges, we must fully embrace the AfCFTA. Removing trade barriers and fostering economic integration will create the conditions necessary for sustainable growth,” he remarked.

Mr. Akufo-Addo also cautioned against the long-term consequences of relying on donor support, which often comes with strings attached.

“Foreign aid is not free—it comes with conditions that may not align with our long-term interests. We must prioritize investments in our people, industries, and agriculture to ensure true self-reliance,” he asserted.

Turning his attention to West Africa, Mr. Akufo-Addo called for stronger collaboration between Ghana and Nigeria as a model for regional economic growth.

  • Govt to employ 100 more workers for 24-hour passport application service – Foreign Minister

Govt to employ 100 more workers for 24-hour passport application service – Foreign Minister

Government is set to recruit 100 additional staff for various passport centres across the country to support the implementation of the 24-hour passport application service, which is expected to roll out this year.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made this known during a working visit to some passport centres following his assumption of office.

Speaking to the media on February 19 at the Passport Headquarters in Accra, the Minister announced that provisions for the new staff are being made in the 2025 budget, which is scheduled to be presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on March 11.

“We are making provision in our budget for 2025 to recruit more staff. We anticipate that we may need about 100 more. That is what our director of passport, based on their analysis, has recommended. When you cut down the waiting time from three, four, five weeks to less than a week—once you do a 24-hour shift—it should be easy to meet those targets,” he stated.

Currently, the Ghana Passport Office is reported to have around 300 staff members. The planned recruitment of 100 more personnel aims to reduce waiting times, expedite passport delivery, and support the government’s flagship 24-hour economy initiative as part of its reset agenda.

Mr. Ablakwa urged passport office staff to prepare for extended working hours, including day, night, and dawn shifts, in alignment with the government’s 24-hour economy strategy.

“You have also heard about the major reforms we want to implement. We want the Passport Administration in our country to become a 24-hour operation. This year [2025], you need to get ready. We’re going to run three shifts. We want to cut down the waiting time for passports,” he emphasized.

The Minister further reiterated that a key objective of the reform is to ensure that applicants receive their passports within a week of application.

“We believe that within a week, it should be possible to get a Ghanaian passport when you apply for it. The 24-hour economy intervention we’re introducing will address that,” he added.

Additionally, Mr. Ablakwa disclosed plans to introduce chip-embedded passports and integrate passport data with the National Identification Authority (NIA) system to streamline applicant verification.

As part of efforts to modernize the Foreign Affairs Ministry, he also revealed plans to revise passport fees—reducing costs for ordinary applicants while increasing charges for premium services.

Govt has bought an adequate supply of fuel to avert dumsor – Kwakye Ofosu

Government has assured citizens that there is enough fuel to keep electricity running, despite recent power outages in some areas.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, February 20, Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, admitted that some parts of the country have experienced power cuts. However, he stressed that steps have been taken to ensure a steady supply of electricity.

He also mentioned that Energy Minister John Jinapor is actively monitoring the situation and will soon update the public on efforts to resolve the issue.

“I can say that the energy minister is aware of the situation and in the coming days he will engage the public. But the threats that we faced at the very onset of this government, which is related to the closure of the West Africa Gas Pipeline and the failure of the previous government to meet its obligation in providing fuel for thermal power generation were averted.

“The government has brought an adequate supply of fuel. But it is important from time to time to engage the public and address the concerns that they may have when it comes to the power situation,” he stated.

  • Court finds Luis Rubiales guilty of sexual assault against Jenni Hermoso, fined $10,434

Court finds Luis Rubiales guilty of sexual assault against Jenni Hermoso, fined $10,434

A Spanish court has found Luis Rubiales, the former president of Spain’s football federation, guilty of sexually assaulting footballer Jenni Hermoso by kissing her without consent after the 2023 Women’s World Cup final.

On Thursday, June 20, 2025, the High Court of Spain ordered Rubiales to pay a fine of over €10,000 ($10,434) for the offense. However, he was cleared of an additional charge of coercion.

Rubiales has denied any wrongdoing and told Reuters that he plans to appeal the ruling, stating: “I will continue to fight.”

The case received widespread attention because it overshadowed Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup and fueled discussions about gender equality and respect for women in sports.

During the trial, Rubiales insisted that Hermoso had agreed to the kiss, but the player firmly denied this. Judge Jose Manuel Fernandez-Prieto ruled in Hermoso’s favor, stating that the kiss was without consent and amounted to sexual assault.

However, the judge also noted that the act did not involve violence or intimidation and was considered less severe, so Rubiales was spared a prison sentence. Instead, he must pay the fine.

The incident has sparked global conversations about respect and fairness in women’s football, with many calling for greater protection for female athletes.

“The pecuniary penalty must be chosen, which is less serious than the custodial sentence,” he said in his ruling.

A Spanish court has cleared Luis Rubiales of coercion charges related to his attempt to downplay the kiss he gave Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 Women’s World Cup awards ceremony in Sydney.

Three other former football officials—ex-women’s team coach Jorge Vilda, men’s team sports director Albert Luque, and marketing head Ruben Rivera—were also found not guilty of coercion.

As part of the ruling, Rubiales is now banned from going within 200 meters of Hermoso or contacting her in any way for one year.

Instead of a prison sentence, the court ordered him to pay a fine of €20 per day for 18 months, adding up to a total penalty of €10,800 ($11,270).

During the trial, Hermoso said the unsolicited kiss from her boss and the commotion that followed “tainted one of the happiest days of my life,” while her teammates testified it left her overwhelmed, crying and exhausted in the following hours and days.

Hermoso’s lawyer told Reuters it was up to his client to decide if “she wants to keep up the fight” after Rubiales avoided a prison sentence.

The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE), which was a private prosecutor in the case, said the ruling was “a significant step forward in the defence of women’s rights and in the fight for a sport free of abuse and inequality.”

“When there is no consent there is assault and that is what the judge certifies in this sentence. The victim’s word is honoured, as the law stipulates, and should not be questioned,” Ana Redondo, Equality Minister in the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, wrote on X.

  • Sidelining of NMC in Shutdown of 7 Radio Stations Unconstitutional – MFWA to Sam George

Sidelining of NMC in Shutdown of 7 Radio Stations Unconstitutional – MFWA to Sam George

Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has criticized Communications Minister, Sam George, over the recent shutdown of seven radio stations, describing the move as unconstitutional.

This comes after the minister, in a statement, directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to close down the stations, citing their operation without valid frequency authorizations and security concerns.

According to the directive, six of the affected stations were operating without valid licenses, while one—Gumah FM in Bawku—was shut down due to security reasons.

Reacting to this development in a statement issued on February 19, 2025, the MFWA accused the Communications Ministry of acting unconstitutionally by shutting down the stations without consulting major stakeholders, particularly the independent National Media Commission (NMC).

The MFWA acknowledged that, while security concerns regarding Gumah FM may be valid due to its broadcast content, it is illegitimate for a tribunal made up of partisan political figures—such as the sector minister, the regional minister, the director general of the NCA, and the national security coordinator—to act as both complainants and decision-makers in the matter.

While recognizing that expert advice may have informed the decision to close the affected stations, the MFWA insists that such intelligence should be submitted to the NMC for review and a final verdict.

“Even if the decision was based on intelligence reports, the facts and evidence must be presented before the NMC, which should be the body to recommend a shutdown if necessary,” the statement emphasized.

As a reminder to the government, the MFWA referenced Section 2(9) of the NCA Act 775, which mandates the NCA to “pay particular attention to the provisions of Chapter 12 of the Constitution.

Chapter 12 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana focuses on the freedom and independence of the media, underscoring the need for a free and responsible press while protecting it from government interference.

In light of these concerns, the MFWA has advised the government to pause, reflect, and consult the NMC before taking any action to sanction a broadcast station, particularly over content-related concerns.

Furthermore, the organization advocates for a broader dialogue leading to legal reforms that would grant the independent National Media Commission the authority to approve broadcast license applications and recommend appropriate sanctions for licensing violations.

  • Mass dismissal, attacks on journalists and fmr govt appointees aren’t democratic – Bawumia

Mass dismissal, attacks on journalists and fmr govt appointees aren’t democratic – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concern over what he describes as undemocratic actions by the President John Mahama led government

In a strongly worded statement shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, February 20, 2025, Dr. Bawumia criticized the mass dismissal of public servants employed during the previous administration, as well as recent attacks on journalists and former government officials.

Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had made a personal commitment to refrain from commenting on governance issues to give the new administration the space to settle and implement its policies. However, he now feels compelled to speak out due to recent developments that he believes threaten Ghana’s democracy.

According to him, the dismissal of individuals who were legally employed under the previous government contradicts the campaign promises of the ruling party, which assured Ghanaians of job creation. He noted that rather than terminating appointments, the government should be focused on creating more employment opportunities.

“It is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He expressed particular concern over the dismissal of directors in public service, stressing that these individuals are professionals and not political figures. He described it as unfortunate that highly qualified individuals are being removed from their positions simply because they are related to or associated with members of the previous government.

Beyond the job dismissals, Dr. Bawumia highlighted increasing attacks on journalists, the use of the military to raid the homes of former government officials, and mob actions against innocent individuals and state institutions. He likened these developments to a military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic transition.

“These are certainly worrying times for our democracy, and the earlier action is taken to protect institutions and democratic practice, the better it would be for Ghana’s forward march,” he cautioned.

Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to be a leader for all Ghanaians and to put an end to these actions. He called on the government to reverse the mass dismissals and ensure that democratic principles are upheld.

“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution. Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better!” he concluded.

His statement has since sparked discussions about the state of governance, with many calling on the government to address the concerns raised and ensure that democracy is safeguarded in the country.

Meanwhile,  National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, has filed a lawsuit against the government of Ghana over the mass dismissal of public sector employees.

He argues that the directive issued by the Chief of Staff on February 10, 2025, to annul all appointments and recruitments made after December 7, 2024, is unconstitutional2. He claims that the Chief of Staff lacks the authority to issue such a directive and that it violates Article 191(b) of the 1992 Constitution, which protects public service employees from dismissal without just cause.

  • CAF Appeals Panel lifts sanctions on Eto’o, clears him for Executive Committee bid

CAF Appeals Panel lifts sanctions on Eto’o, clears him for Executive Committee bid

Cameroon football legend Samuel Eto’o has successfully appealed against the sanctions placed on him by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), allowing him to run for a position on the CAF Executive Committee, AfricaSoccer.com reports.

Eto’o, who is the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), was fined $200,000 and penalized for allegedly violating CAF’s ethical rules. Many believe this led to his disqualification from CAF’s elections in March.

However, after an eight-month legal battle, CAF’s Appeals Board ruled that the Disciplinary Board did not have the authority to handle the case, as such matters should be addressed by an independent Ethics Committee.

“The decision of 27 June 2024, which imposed a fine of USD 200,000 on Mr. Eto’o, was annulled,” read a statement from Eto’o’s legal team.

“In accordance with the principle of lis pendens, the CAF disciplinary bodies could not take up this matter.”

The decision is a big win for former FC Barcelona and Inter Milan star Samuel Eto’o, whose image had been questioned because of his ties to betting company 1xBet and a past suspended prison sentence for tax fraud in Spain.

CAF initially saw his deal with 1xBet as a conflict of interest, which many believe was the reason he was left out of the election race.

Low fans turn out as Kotoko resume training after GPL suspension

Asante Kotoko have started training again after the Ghana Premier League was suspended due to the sad death of Francis Frimpong also known as Nana Pooley at Nana Kronmansah Park. Initially, the team said they wouldn’t play until justice was served for Francis.

Now, the team is back to training at Adako Jachie with 19 players practicing under their coach, Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum. However, Samba O’Neil, Wisdom Fernando, Peter Amidu Acquah, Lord Amoah, and Kwesi Asante were present but did not join the training session.

Despite the team’s return to training at the Adako Jachie facility, the turnout of fans was notably low.

Asante Kotoko’s training sessions at the Adako Jachie facility typically attracted a significant number of fans. On average, around 200 to 300 fans would attend these sessions to support the team and watch their favorite players in action.

The recent low turnout is likely due to the ongoing grief and the team’s initial stance of not resuming competitive matches until justice was served for Pooley.

Full List of Players Who Trained:

    Goalkeepers: Fredrick Asare, Mohammed Camara
Defenders: Fatao Siedu, Benjamin Twum, Daniel Agyietey, Justice Blay

“All glory to God, humbled by His mercy” – Rihanna after baby daddy’s verdict

Rihanna is feeling grateful after A$AP Rocky was cleared of all charges in his felony assault case.

The 36-year-old singer, who has been with A$AP Rocky since 2020, expressed her relief on Instagram following his acquittal on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

“All glory to God. Grateful and humbled by His mercy,” she wrote.

A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, was accused of shooting his former friend Terrell Ephron near a hotel nearly four years ago. He denied the allegations throughout the trial.

The rapper was facing up to 24 years in prison, but after almost a month in court, a jury of 12 found him not guilty after long trial.

Following the verdict, Mayers expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank God for saving my life. This whole experience has been crazy for the past four years. I’m thankful and blessed to be a free man talking to y’all.”

Rihanna, who has two children with A$AP Rocky—RZA, 2, and Riot, 18 months—sat behind him in court as the verdict was announced.

During the trial, Terrell Ephron claimed that A$AP Rocky shot at him, injuring his hand. However, Mayers’ lawyers argued that the gun was just a prop and not real.

Although security cameras recorded parts of the incident, there was no video evidence of the actual shooting.

Judge Mark Arnold dismissed the case, telling the rapper, “Mr. Mayers, you’re excused!”

Before the trial, A$AP Rocky had rejected a plea deal that would have required him to serve six months in jail.

Video: “This is the Blacko era” – Samini recognises singer’s influence in the music scene

Ghanaian musician Samini has acknowledged Black Sherif’s strong presence in the music industry, praising his dedication and hard work.

Black Sherif, famous for his unique mix of highlife, hip-hop, and afrobeat, has gained widespread attention since his breakthrough.

In a recent video shared online on February 19, 2025, Samini, who has been observing Black Sherif’s journey, said his success comes from his persistence and passion for music.

“Currently, this is the Blacko era, unless a new artist comes with a fresh sound. Blacko came with his own style, and now we have about 5 or 6 people trying to mimic him. That shows how much people are looking at his sound as the standard, unless someone is bold enough to bring something completely different. I think it’s a Blacko era,” Samini said.

Samini acknowledged that artistes like Fameye, Lasmid, Olivetheboy, and King Paluta are thriving, but he believes Black Sherif’s distinct style and authenticity set him apart.

He also commended Black Sherif for discovering his unique sound and making a strong impact in the music industry.

“No disrespect to other artistes, I’m loving Fameye’s, Lasmid’s, Olivetheboy’s, and King Paluta’s music, but Blacko’s music has reached a level that shows why he’s in the position he is now.

“With a label like Blacko’s, these boys could have achieved the same or even more. The way his music resonates with people, it’s clear why it’s Blacko’s time. He has created a space for himself that others are striving to reach,” Samini added.

Samini also highlighted Black Sherif’s influence on Ghanaian youth culture, adding that he has become a powerful voice for the younger generation.

Avoid alcohol, protect your voice – Agya Koo Nimo advices Kwabena Kwabena

Veteran highlife musician Agya Koo Nimo has advised Kwabena Kwabena to limit his alcohol intake for the sake of his health.

During a visit to his home in Kumasi over the weekend, the 94-year-old palmwine music legend stressed the need to prioritize well-being.

“Listen to whatever I say. Why am I 94? The first thing, Kwabena, respect our kidneys. Drink a lot of water to clear everything in your kidneys. As for alcohol, you may just take a little,” Agya Koo Nimo said in a video sighted on nydjlive.com.

Using himself as an example, he noted that while he occasionally takes alcohol, he avoids drinks that could harm his health.

“I would just take a bottle of beer, the bitter one. But I do not take hard liquor. Hard liquor will spoil your voice. Your only gift is your voice. I beg you, Kwabena, take good care of yourself,” he advised.

Agya Koo Nimo’s warning reflects growing worries about drug use among musicians.

Recently, Kwabena Kwabena shared on UTV that he had stopped using substances that could harm his health.

Known for his dedication to traditional highlife, he has consistently produced hit songs and hosted concerts over the years.

His performance at the Vitamilk Love Night concert on February 14, 2025, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre earned him praise from industry insiders.

Sports Minister to hold talks with SuperSport on broadcasting Ghana Premier League

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has announced that Sports Minister Kofi Adams will soon begin talks with SuperSport about broadcasting the Ghana Premier League.

Right now, the league has no main sponsor or official TV partner after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) ended its contract with Chinese broadcaster StarTimes.

The contract between StarTimes and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) ended on June 30, 2024. The four-year agreement, which was worth $5.25 million, was originally signed in 20202. The termination of the contract was due to outstanding monetary obligations, with StarTimes owing the GFA close to a million dollars. Despite the successful collaboration, both parties amicably agreed to part ways

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, February 19, Ayariga said the Minister plans to discuss possible coverage deals with the South African-based network.

“The Minister of Sports and Recreation has revealed to me that he is looking to negotiate with SuperSport and others to begin covering our local leagues,” Mr. Ayariga said.

There are reports that StarTimes is in talks to regain broadcasting rights for the league, but the GFA has not officially confirmed this.

  • Akufo-Addo has told us not to ‘run away’ but be accountable – Ahiagbah

Akufo-Addo has told us not to ‘run away’ but be accountable – Ahiagbah

The NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that former President Nana Akufo-Addo has asked his past officials to cooperate with any investigations or accountability measures after his time in office.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, February 18, Ahiagbah emphasized the party’s dedication to openness and accountability.

“We [The NPP] Have No Record Of Running Away; We’ll Be Here,” he stated firmly.

Mr. Ahiagbah’s comments come amid calls for accountability from various quarters of the public as the country transitions into a new political administration.

Until recently, the Office of the Special Prosecutor had declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive on the country’s wanted list. The sick cousin of the former President, according to his lawyers, had told the Chief of Staff about his medical condition, his decision to seek treatment abroad, and availability when needed.

“We’ll Deal With The Issues Here. It Was The NDC Members Who Ran Away. My Own Sister, Sedinam Tamakloe, Disappeared. She Was Tried In Absentia, But She Ought To Be Here. Our Party Has No History Of Our Officials Fleeing From Accountability.”

According to Mr. Ahiagbah, the NPP’s priority remains focused on preparing for the 2028 elections while ensuring that its members answer any questions regarding their stewardship.

“Our Preoccupation Is How We Get Our Party Situated And Contest The 2028 Election. Matters To Do With Accountability—Our People Will Be Here To Answer The Questions,” he assured.

Revealing the directive from the former President, he noted, “There’s An Effective Commitment Right From The Former President Himself. He Has Given A Directive To Ensure That Our People Are Available To Do That.

“I Just Don’t Want To Go Into The Details Of What He Said, But There Is That Disposition From The Former President—An Indication To Stay And Make Sure That You Account For [Your Stewardship].”

Defending the Akufo-Addo administration’s record, Mr. Ahiagbah expressed confidence that history will judge the government favourably.

“We Came To Do The Best We Can. And I Believe That When The Dust Settles, Ghana Will See What We Have Done For The Eight Years,” he said.

Mass dimissal: Stop sacking people and create new jobs – Bawumia goes after Mahama

Former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken issue with President John Mahama for removing public servants appointed by the previous government.

In a statement, he called on the President to prioritize job creation instead of laying off workers, saying the decision goes against democratic values and campaign promises.

“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” he said.

He further described the dismissals as ironic and unjust, arguing that even non-political public servants were being targeted for their perceived affiliations.

“In some of the cases, the only reason for dismissal was that the persons whose livelihoods have been destroyed are known to or related to politicians, as if to suggest that they cannot live independent professional lives, however qualified they are,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia also raised concerns about what he described as a deteriorating security situation in the country, citing attacks on journalists, military raids on former government officials’ homes, and violent mob actions against state institutions.

“This is rather reminiscent of a military takeover and not a peaceful democratic transition,” he bemoaned.

As tensions rise over the mass dismissals, Dr. Bawumia has urged the President to reconsider the decision and lead in a way that benefits all Ghanaians. He stressed that the nation should not return to old political mistakes.

“There is no reset by repeating or escalating what may have happened in the past,” he stressed.

Calling for the protection of state institutions and constitutional order, he declared, “Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better.”

Meanwhile, New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye has filed a lawsuit challenging the dismissals.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he is likely to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin this month.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, after U.S. and Russian officials held talks in Saudi Arabia, Trump strongly suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was responsible for Russia’s invasion.

He also brushed aside concerns about Ukraine not being included in discussions aimed at ending the war.

“I think I have the power to end this war, and I think it’s going very well. But today, I heard, ‘Oh, well, we weren’t invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years. You should have ended it…,” Trump said at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

“You should have never started it. You could have made a deal. I could have made a deal for Ukraine.”

Trump said that he was “much more confident” of reaching an agreement following the talks in Riyadh led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“They were very good. Russia wants to do something, they want to stop the savage barbarism,” he said.

Asked if his administration would support Russia’s calls for elections in Ukraine as part of any peace deal, Trump claimed without evidence that Zelenskyy had an approval rating of just 4 percent and noted that the country’s elections had been suspended under martial law.

In an opinion poll carried out by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in December, 52 percent of respondents said they trusted Zelenskyy, down 12 percentage points from February.

“Yeah, I would say that, you know, when you want a seat at the table… Wouldn’t the people of Ukraine have to say like, ‘It’s been a long time since we’ve had an election?’” Trump said.

“That’s not a Russia thing, that’s something coming from me, and coming from many other countries also.”

Kwesi Nyantakyi to return to football? – Former GFA president reveals plans

Former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi says he has no plans to return to football administration, even after his ban is lifted, because of the difficult experience he went through.

FIFA initially banned him for life from all football activities after journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas released an investigative documentary in June 2018.

The documentary exposed alleged corruption in Ghanaian football and showed Nyantakyi accepting $65,000 from an undercover reporter pretending to be a businessman.

Nyantakyi later appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which reduced his ban to 15 years. This sparked rumors that he wanted to return to football administration.

However, in an interview with Kessben TV, the former CAF Vice President said that while he still loves football, he has no interest in coming back.

“Although I still have a passion for football, I am not interested in becoming FA President again or taking up any other administrative role. The fear of going through a similar ordeal will always be there,” he stated.

He further explained that even if the ban had not been imposed, his experience after the documentary completely deterred him from considering a return. He described the situation as an attempt on his life.

“Honestly, even if I hadn’t been banned, I wouldn’t have returned. That experience showed me that they had the power to harm me because it felt like they wanted to kill me. Not many people can survive such an ordeal,” he added.

Kwesi Nyantakyi led the Ghana Football Association (GFA) from 2006 until he stepped down in 2018.

During his time in charge, Ghana made history by qualifying for its first-ever FIFA World Cup in 2006. He also guided the national team through the 2010 and 2014 World Cup tournaments.

Additionally, under his leadership, Ghana’s U-20 team, the Black Satellites, won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009..

Stay away – Alleged victims in Andrew Tate’s case warn US against interference

Four women who say they were sexually abused by social media influencer Andrew Tate have asked the US not to get involved in his case in Romania.

The women are worried because they heard that US officials asked Romania to ease travel restrictions on Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate, who have both UK and US nationality. Their lawyer, Matthew Jury, told the BBC that they are confused about why the Trump administration is interfering, but Romania says it is not being pressured by the US.

Tate, 38, and his brother were arrested in Romania three years ago and are facing trial for rape, trafficking minors, and money laundering, which they deny.

In the UK, the brothers are also wanted by police for rape and human trafficking, which they also deny. Their extradition to the UK will be handled after the Romania case is over.

Tate’s representatives had no comment on the new development. The Financial Times reported that US officials mentioned the case to the Romanian government last week, and Trump’s envoy Richard Grenell followed up over the weekend. A source said the US asked for the brothers’ passports to be returned so they could travel while waiting for their trial.

The Tate brothers are not allowed to leave Romania but are no longer under house arrest.

Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu confirmed to Euronews that Grenell had raised Tate’s case with him, and that Grenell had said he was “interested in the fate of the Tate brothers”. The minister denied this amounted to pressure from Americans.
A spokesperson for Mr Hurezeanu told the Financial Times: “Romanian courts are independent and operate based on the law, there is due process.”
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu also denied the reports on X, writing: [The US] has not made any requests to [Romania] upon the legal situation of well-known foreign influencers investigated by the Romanian authorities.

“There were no demands either during the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs- Richard Grenell discussion or after it. Romania and USA share the same values regarding the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.”
According to the FT, Grenell said he had no “substantive conversation” with Hurezeanu, but added: “I support the Tate brothers as evident by my publicly available tweets.”
The US State Department has been approached by the BBC for comment.

The Tate brothers have wide support on right-wing social media, and supported Trump during the US election campaign.
Lawyer Mr Jury said: “It’s very clear from members of the Trump administration’s social media posts and public statements that there is a great deal of support for Tate.
“Either they don’t know or they don’t care about the nature of the allegations and how serious they are,” he told BBC Newsnight.
He said the women he represented were “absolutely distraught”.
“To see the most powerful man in the world support their alleged abuser, is incredibly traumatising… it’s gaslighting of a sort.”
And he called the reported US actions a “gross interference in my clients’ right to a fair trial and due process”.

Jude Bellingham receives a two-match ban after red card against Osasuna

Jude Bellingham has received a two-match ban for his comments towards the referee during Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Osasuna on Saturday.

The English player was given a straight red card in the first half after making remarks to referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero. The referee reported that Bellingham said “f*ck you” to him, but Bellingham denied it.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has now punished Bellingham with a two-game suspension for his “disrespectful attitude” towards Munuera Montero.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti backed up his player’s claim that the red card was merely down to a misunderstanding and the Spanish side provided video evidence to support the argument.

Madrid initially asked for the card to be overturned, Cadena SER reports, but the Disciplinary Committee opted for a significantly shorter ban than they could have handed out.

“Taking into account the different factual circumstances invoked, it is appropriate to impose the sanction provided for in said precept in its minimum degree, of two games,” the ruling said.

British journalist Charlotte Peet reportedly missing in Brazil

A British journalist named Charlotte Peet has reportedly gone missing in Brazil, causing concern among foreign correspondents who have asked authorities to intensify the search.

Charlotte Peet, 32, last contacted a friend on February 8, saying she was in São Paulo and planned to travel to Rio de Janeiro. Her family in the UK reported losing contact with her a few days later and provided authorities with her flight details and a copy of her passport.

The Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in Brazil (ACIE) released a statement expressing worry about her disappearance and support for her family and friends.

According to the statement, the case was initially reported to the police in Rio but later transferred to São Paulo, where she was last seen. Brazil’s Department of Homicides and Personal Protection (DHPP) is helping with the investigation.

Charlotte Peet has worked as a freelance journalist in Rio and London for media outlets like Al Jazeera and the Times, according to her LinkedIn profile.

“Her disappearance has sparked growing concern among colleagues and journalists in the region, with ACIE calling for intensified efforts to locate her as soon as possible”, a statement on behalf of its president Edmar Figueiredo and its board of directors said.

A UK Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has been reported as missing in Brazil and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Bechem United announces GHC 100k reward to capture the murderer of Kotoko supporter

Premier League club, Bechem United, has offered a GHC100,000 reward for information about the suspect who killed Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as “Nana Pooley.”

Pooley was stabbed during a Matchday 19 game between Nsoatreman FC and Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park.

On Monday, Asante Kotoko’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, named a man called Brimah as the suspect. Brimah is currently on the run, and the Ghana Police Service is searching for him.

Bechem United has taken a strong stand against hooliganism by offering this reward to help catch the suspect.

“Bechem United FC takes bold stand against hooliganism, offers GHC100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the murderer of late Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong (Nana Pooley),” the club stated.

    Statement below:

After the tragic event, the Ghana Premier League has been temporarily halted. But the FA Cup Round of 16 games will still take place this weekend across the country.

In the meantime, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku is scheduled to visit Asante Kotoko on Thursday to discuss Pooley’s passing further.

  • Govt has acted lawfully in appointment of Births and Deaths Registry Head – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Govt has acted lawfully in appointment of Births and Deaths Registry Head – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has supported the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of Births and Deaths, saying it follows the constitution.

During a press conference on Wednesday, February 19 at the Jubilee House, Ofosu Kwakye explained, “The laws governing that entity clearly specify who should make the appointment. It states that it is the president, and the president has acted in line with the 1992 constitution.”

He further noted, “Section 236 of the constitution stipulates that, in appointing a person as the registrar, the president must consider the relevant academic qualifications, experience, and knowledge of that person in civil service administration. The registrar shall hold office on the terms and conditions specified in the letter of appointment.”

Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has asked its members to get ready for a nationwide strike starting on Thursday, February 20, 2025. They are protesting because the government did not cancel the appointment and give the job to a civil servant, instead of what they call a politically exposed person.

CLOGSAG had earlier warned of a strike after President John Mahama appointed Mr. Adom Botchway to the position.

In response, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye asked CLOGSAG members to stay calm, explaining that the law says the president is responsible for making such appointments.

He added, “Mr Adom Botchway possesses all the necessary experience to take on the role of registrar. CLOGSAG has not questioned his competence for the position; they only claim that he is politically exposed. However, I have just read the law to you, and there is no stipulation that the position must be occupied by a civil servant.”

Mr Ofosu Kwakye continued, “Mr Adom Botchway is a highly experienced public servant who previously served as a district chief executive under President John Atta Mills’ administration. He has many years of public service experience and the required academic qualifications to hold this position.”

He emphasised that the government respects CLOGSAG’s views and seeks further dialogue but reiterated that there is no constitutional provision stating that the position must be filled by a civil servant rather than a politically exposed individual.

Any display of incompetence will result in dismissal – GFA President warns match commissioners

GFA President Kurt Okraku has told match commissioners that they will lose their jobs if they do not do their work well.

He spoke at a training session for match officials on Tuesday, highlighting the need to improve safety and security in Ghana’s top football league.

His warning came after the sad death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong, also called Pooley, who was stabbed during the team’s Week 19 match against Nsoatreman FC in Nsoatre.

After this incident, the Ghana Premier League was stopped while the GFA discussed with all 18 clubs how to prevent future violence.

“We’ll be very, very fair in assessing your work. Be honest,” Okraku said during the engagement.

“Those who fall below the line, unfortunately, will leave us. When you hear the discourse in the public space, you would admit that all is not well. And if we have the opportunity to fix what is not right, this is the most opportune time.”

The suspect in Pooley’s death, known as Brimah, is still on the run. Consequently, A former manager of Asante Kotoko, is offering GH¢10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of the person who killed Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley.

Serebour Boateng announced on Facebook that the reward will be given to anyone whose information helps catch the main suspect in the murder case.

Asante Kotoko’s first team will return to training today, but the club has stated that they will not play any official matches until justice is done for their late supporter.

    About Pooley’s death

Francis Yaw Frimpong, affectionately known as Nana Pooley, was a passionate supporter of Asante Kotoko. Tragically, he was fatally stabbed on February 2, 2025, following a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at Nana Koramansah II Park.

The incident occurred after an on-field altercation among players escalated into the stands, leading to a violent confrontation. Pooley was caught in the chaos and suffered a fatal stab wound to the heart. The autopsy report revealed that the weapon used was about 7.5 cm long, and the cut to his heart was approximately 1.6 cm deep, causing catastrophic internal bleeding.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects in connection with the incident, including former Sunyani West MP Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, who is also the owner of Nsoatreman FC. The football community has been deeply affected by Pooley’s death, and there have been calls for justice and an end to hooliganism in Ghanaian football.

Lookman is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen – Atalanta boss fumes

Atalanta’s coach Gian Piero Gasperini criticized Ademola Lookman, calling him “one of the worst penalty takers” after their unexpected Champions League exit.

After returning from injury, Lookman made an immediate impact by scoring just 42 seconds after coming on in the second half. However, his goal wasn’t enough to overcome Atalanta’s 3-0 halftime deficit against Club Brugge.

Lookman missed an important penalty, which was saved by Simon Mignolet, ending their chances of a comeback. Gasperini later revealed that Lookman wasn’t supposed to take the penalty, as Charles De Ketelaere or Mateo Retegui were the designated takers.

In a post-match interview, Gasperini strongly criticized Lookman’s decision to take the penalty..

“Lookman was not supposed to take that penalty, he is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen,” the Italian manager told reporters.

“He has a frankly terrible record even in training, he converts very few of them. Retegui and De Ketelaere were there, but Lookman in a moment of enthusiasm after scoring decided to take the ball and that was a gesture I did not appreciate at all.”

Lookman has had trouble with penalties before. Fulham fans might recall his famous miss in November 2020, when he tried a fancy panenka shot in the 98th minute against West Ham, but Lukasz Fabianski saved it easily.

Even though Retegui is Atalanta’s main penalty taker and has scored two out of three in Serie A this season, Lookman had also taken and scored one. However, Gasperini’s recent comments show that he doesn’t trust Lookman much with penalties.

Despite their Champions League exit, Atalanta still has a lot to play for in their domestic league. They are currently third in the Serie A standings, five points behind the leaders, Napoli.

Now that their European campaign is over, they will focus on their next league game against Empoli on Sunday, aiming to win and keep their title hopes alive.

The one thing I would want to change abut Shatta – Sammy Flex reveals

Shatta Wale’s manager, Sammy Flex, is concerned about the dancehall star’s intense work habits, warning that he needs to slow down for the sake of his health.

The Dancehall King is famous for releasing hit after hit and ruling the music scene with unmatched regularity.

However, behind the scenes, he hardly sleeps or eats when he’s working, as per his manager.

According to Sammy Flex, once Shatta starts working at his mixing console, getting him to take a break is nearly impossible.

He shared this during an interview on Adom FM’s Work and Happiness when asked what aspect of Shatta’s life he would like to change.

“If there’s anything I want to change about Shatta Wale, it’s that he takes a rest. Sometimes, he’s forced to rest because he just won’t stop working. His career is always on his mind,” he said.

According to the manager, when Shatta Wale is behind his mixing console, time seemingly stands still for him as he becomes deeply engrossed in his craft.

“He is constantly working. That’s why he’s the artiste with the most releases every year,” Sammy Flex added.

2nd Vice President of MUSIGA says Abena Ruthy is not a member amid musician’s disturbing state

Some people have criticized the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) for not helping hiplife musician Kwadee during his tough times. Abena Ruthy, the 2nd Vice President of MUSIGA, explained that Kwadee is not a member of the union.

However, she mentioned that MUSIGA has supported Kwadee before and plans to help him again out of kindness.

“There was news about Kwadee recently. He is not even a member now. But our President was on us to link him up to Kwadee. So that is the kind of thing we are doing. We are a family,” she said in an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z.

Abena further said that MUSIGA is a welfare group that is dedicated to improving the living conditions of its members.

She therefore urged MUSIGA members to contribute to their welfare and insurance policies.

According to her, there is a misconception that every artiste automatically belongs to MUSIGA.

“There is a narrative out there that so far as someone sings, everybody thinks that you are part of us. So we have members in good standing. So as it stands he is not a member in good standing.

In 2018, the Musicians Union of Ghana, led by Ras Caleb Appiah, visited Kwadee at the Willing Ways Foundation rehab centre in Kumasi and gave him some donations.

Currently, there are reports that Kwadee’s mental health has worsened again.

Alverca, near Lisbon, is currently second in Liga Portugal 2 and hopes to join top clubs like Sporting CP, Porto, and Benfica next season.

This purchase follows Alverca’s recent win in Liga 3, a significant recovery after the club’s financial troubles led to its closure in 2005.

Counter the doubts, prove your relevance – Mahama urges Council of State

President John Mahama has urged the newly appointed 31-member Council of State to prove their importance and address public doubts about their role.

During their swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, he acknowledged concerns about the Council’s impact and emphasized the need for them to play a significant role in national governance.

“In recent times, the Council of State has come under criticism from an expectant public who perceive its work as unsatisfactory and merely a rubber stamp for executive decisions. Some have even questioned its very relevance and called for its abolition,” the President said.

“I hold out hope that your tenure will convince doubters of your importance and put to rest any such perceptions. I am confident that with your collective wisdom, we will continue to build a nation that upholds justice, progress, freedom, and unity.”

The call for action comes as the public demands greater transparency and efficiency from advisory bodies.

Former Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, was chosen as the chairman of the Council, which includes notable members like former Chief Justice Sophia Akufo, former Attorney General Betty Mould Iddrisu, and ex-Zebilla MP Cletus Avoka.

In his speech, Mr. Adjaho promised that the Council would meet expectations.

“It is true many have questioned the relevance of the Council of State, and as you rightly pointed out, some have even called for its abolition,” he noted.

“But I want to assure you that this will be a council of difference. Fortunately, many members are distinguished individuals I’ve encountered in my public life, including many accomplished women. We are committed to justifying the council’s role through diligent service.”

Swiss Super League club FC Basel has signed Ghanaian defender Daniel Theophilus Asiedu from Berekum Chelsea.

The 20-year-old has agreed to a one-year contract, with an option to extend for three more years.

Asiedu, who plays as a centre-back, has previously represented Ghana at the U17 (Black Starlets) and U20 (Black Satellites) levels.

He had trials with Basel and completed them in January last year. However, his signing was delayed after medical tests revealed an old cruciate ligament injury that had not fully healed.

Asiedu will be the latest Ghanaian to join the club after Emmanuel Essiam and Jonas Adjei Adjetey.
Daniel Theophilus Asiedu is a promising young Ghanaian defender who recently signed with Swiss Super League side FC Basel.

Born on January 14, 2005, Asiedu began his career at Berekum Chelsea in the Ghana Premier League. He plays as a center-back and has represented Ghana at the U17 and U20 levels.

Asiedu joined FC Basel on a one-year deal with an option to extend for another three years. His move to Basel was delayed in January 2024 due to an old cruciate ligament injury, but he has since recovered and is now part of the club’s U21 team, with the potential to move up to the first team.

  • ‘I will choose Champions League refs over LaLiga refs’ – Madrid’s Ancelotti

‘I will choose Champions League refs over LaLiga refs’ – Madrid’s Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti prefers Champions League referees, noting that there is “less controversy and fewer VAR interventions.” This comment comes as Real Madrid prepares to face Manchester City in their playoff second leg, amidst ongoing disputes over LaLiga officiating.

Real Madrid secured a 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium last week, with Jude Bellingham scoring a 92nd-minute winner. Ancelotti described this as giving the reigning champions a “small advantage” heading into Wednesday’s match at the Santiago Bernabéu.

On Monday, Madrid executives met with Spanish refereeing officials to review audio recordings of a contentious decision in Madrid’s recent LaLiga defeat at Espanyol. This meeting followed an open letter from the club, asserting that Spain’s refereeing system was “completely discredited.”

“Yes,” Ancelotti said in a pre-match news conference on Tuesday, when asked if he “felt calmer” with Champions League officiating.

“I think there’s less controversy, and fewer VAR interventions. The VAR only intervenes when it’s necessary. In the Champions League, the best referees in each country officiate, so the quality is very high.”

Madrid have been unhappy with key decisions in their last three LaLiga games: the 1-0 loss at Espanyol, a 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid, and Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Osasuna, where Bellingham was sent off.

“I’ve given my opinion about what’s happening,” Ancelotti said. “What’s happening is surprising, but I have nothing to add. Obviously we aren’t happy with what happened against Osasuna, Atlético … They were three games where we were hurt by decisions which I still don’t understand.”

Ancelotti said he was “hopeful” that Bellingham would escape a ban for his red card, with Madrid saying the referee was mistaken in his claim that the midfielder had insulted him.

The Italian confirmed that defender Antonio Rüdiger will be available for the City second leg — after missing out in Manchester — but said right-back Lucas Vázquez wasn’t ready to start.

He also rejected Pep Guardiola’s claim that City have a “1%” chance of progressing to the knockout phase.

“Tomorrow before the game, I’ll ask him if he really thinks that they have a 1% chance!” Ancelotti said. “We don’t think we have a 99% chance. We think we have a small advantage that we have to make the most of.”

“I’m happy with the game we played in the first leg,” Fede Valverde — who played out of position at right-back — added.

“I see how the team is playing, how we’ve been training. That makes you feel calm. You know the team will do well. It gives me confidence that we’ll go through.”

Valverde spoke up for referees in a news conference, which upset many Madrid fans.

On Tuesday, the versatile Uruguayan player went on social media to explain his remarks.

“I don’t want anyone to misunderstand me, but above all I want to clarify for our fans: If today I don’t talk about the refereeing we are suffering it is because I am aware myself, and I must focus on tomorrow,” he wrote.

“Everyone has seen what is happening to us in this league, and I haven’t forgotten it, but now we have to focus on tomorrow, and I will be 100% focused as I have always been.”

A former manager of Asante Kotoko, is offering GH¢10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of the person who killed Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley.

Serebour Boateng announced on Facebook that the reward will be given to anyone whose information helps catch the main suspect in the murder case.

“As a former management member of Kotoko, I am offering GH¢10,000 to anyone who will assist in arresting the killer of Nana Pooley,” he posted on Facebook on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

His promise follows a revelation by Asante Kotoko’s lawyer, Sarfo Duku, that the Ghana Police Service has identified the killer.

Speaking to reporters after a court appearance, Duku disclosed that police documents and statements from suspects all point to a man named Braimah as the individual who fatally stabbed Pooley.

    However, he remains at large.

“One person is still at large. He’s called Braimah, and according to the police, based on their findings, he is the one who actually stabbed the deceased,” Duku stated.

“In fact, according to the police, I’m speaking based on their official report, which is now a public document, all the accused persons have admitted that it was Braimah, who is currently on the run, that stabbed Pooley to death.”

On Sunday, February 16, 2025, Asante Kotoko organized a one-week memorial event for their late supporter.

Fans from different Ghana Premier League teams gathered to honor his memory.

Video: Youth Minister says betting tax will be scrapped in the 2025 budget

Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has promised that the betting tax will be scrapped during the 2025 budget announcement.

He mentioned that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is dedicated to keeping the promises made during the election campaign and will not let the people of Ghana down.

The minister also stated that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is working on eliminating unnecessary taxes, like the betting tax, to help reduce the financial burden on bettors in the country.

In an interview with JoyNews, Opare Addo said that President Mahama’s team is working hard to achieve the president’s goals.

“Everybody is committed to meeting the target of His Excellency President Mahama. When the budget is read in March 2025, all the promises we made regarding tax cancellations will be implemented, and young people should look forward to the cancellation of the betting tax,” he said.

The comments align with recent reports that Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson is working to ensure the betting tax is removed during the 2025 budget reading.

The finance minister is engaging the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to scrap nuisance taxes, including the betting tax.

You need a strong, robust team – Kuami Eugene told after Lynx exit

UK-based showbiz expert, George Britton has suggested a strong, robust and well connected publicity team for Ghanaian highlife musician, Kuami Eugene.

He has expressed concerns over Rockstar’s visibility in the entertainment industry after parting ways with long-standing record label Lynx Entertainment after eight years of partnership. Britton believes the singer needs a solid team to maintain his influence in the industry.

“Kuami Eugene has been in the industry for a while. He knows what to do and has built relationships,” he said in an interview cited by MyNewsGh.com.

“But if he wants to work effectively, he needs to form a strong team—one with a good network and members who have key industry connections.”

Britton noted a decline in the singer’s promotional strategies, referencing the recent release of a song on his birthday.

“Back when he was with Lynx, we would have seen more updates about his release. At Lynx, there were people ensuring the public was always informed about what Kuami Eugene was doing. Now, I don’t know who is on his team or what they’re up to,” he told Amansan Krakye.

Highlighting the importance of visibility, he added, “If I don’t see Kuami Eugene posting about his new music on Instagram, and I don’t see anything elsewhere either, it shows just how crucial a good team is.”

Meanwhile, the publicity of his recent releases compared to when he was with Lynx Entertainment, there’s been a noticeable shift. While Lynx Entertainment provided a robust promotional machine that ensured his music reached a wide audience, his recent releases under his new label, Rockstar Records, have relied more on his personal social media presence and collaborations

Kuami Eugene released his latest single “Belinda” on September 13, 2024, after his exit from Lynx Entertainment. This song is his first release under his new label, Rockstar Records, in collaboration with Clear Road Music Group.

    Lynx Entertainment
label’s CEO, Richie Mensah, confirmed in January 2025 that Eugene has left the label. Kuami Eugene had been with Lynx for eight years before deciding to part ways and pursue his career independently under his new label, Rockstar Records.

“Malicious speculation” – Ned Nwoko refutes new wife, pregnancy with Chika claims

Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko has firmly denied the rumors spreading on social media that he plans to marry Nollywood actress Chika Ike as his seventh wife or that she is pregnant with his child.

His Director of Communications issued a statement calling these rumors “completely untrue and based on malicious gossip.”

The statement also rejected the reports that the senator made any remarks about musician Tuface Idibia and polygamy, stating that these claims are false.

“Our attention has been drawn to recent false reports suggesting that Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko is planning to marry Nollywood actress Chika Ike as his seventh wife and that she is pregnant for him. We categorically state that these claims are entirely baseless and a product of malicious speculation,” the statement read.

The statement also mentioned that, being a well-known figure married to a famous actress, it’s common for bloggers to spread false stories to get attention.

However, it highlighted that Senator Nwoko is dedicated to his national responsibilities and political work and does not have time for any distractions.

“This office remains open to journalists seeking accurate information, and we urge media practitioners to verify facts before publication to avoid the legal repercussions of spreading misinformation,” the statement added.

The statement concluded by advising the public to disregard the rumors and rely solely on official communication from Senator Nwoko’s office.

The rumors gained traction after actress Regina Daniels, Nwoko’s wife, deactivated her Instagram account, sparking widespread speculation about trouble in their marriage.

Additionally, Chika Ike’s recent announcement of her pregnancy fueled assumptions of a possible connection with the billionaire politician.

Despite the social media buzz, Senator Nwoko’s office remains firm in its position, dismissing the claims as baseless and urging the public to steer clear of misinformation.

Barcelona climb back to top of La Liga after narrowly defeating Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona managed to scrape through a tense game against Rayo Vallecano and climb back to the top of La Liga, a position they hadn’t held since December.

Robert Lewandowski scored a first-half penalty, which turned out to be the game-winning goal. This win pushed Barcelona above their rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, both of whom had 1-1 draws on Saturday.

Lewandowski’s penalty, his 20th goal of the season, came after a controversial decision by the video assistant referee (VAR). The referee awarded a penalty when Rayo’s Pathe Ciss was accused of pulling down Inigo Martinez, although Martinez was nowhere near the ball.

Rayo Vallecano was furious when they didn’t get a penalty for a similar incident involving Ciss. The tension heightened when Rayo thought they had scored an equalizer, but the goal was disallowed because Randy Nteka, in an offside position, was considered to have obstructed Martinez.

Barcelona missed several opportunities to extend their lead in the second half and were lucky not to concede when Jorge de Frutos missed a chance for Rayo Vallecano late in the game.

With this victory, Barcelona now leads the table with 51 points, ahead of Real Madrid on goal difference and one point clear of Atletico Madrid, with 14 games remaining in the season.

  • DDEP: Finance Ministry disburses GHC6bn to bondholders

DDEP: Finance Ministry disburses GHC6bn to bondholders

President John Mahama has instructed the Ministry of Finance to pay all outstanding Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) coupons and set aside funds for future payments using the Sinking Fund.

Following this directive, the Ministry of Finance released GH₵6.081 billion in cash to DDEP bondholders on Monday, February 17. In addition, GH₵3.46 billion was credited to bondholders’ securities accounts as part of a Payment-In-Kind (PIK) arrangement, following the terms of the DDEP agreement.

To improve debt management, the government also deposited GH₵9.7 billion into the Debt Service Recovery Cedi Account, also known as the Sinking Fund. This money will help cover the next five DDEP coupon payments scheduled for July and August 2025.

President Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration remains committed to meeting all DDEP obligations and rebuilding trust in the economy.

He added that the 2025 Budget Statement will introduce new steps to promote responsible financial management, prioritize key expenses, and improve transparency in government spending.

Despite the economic difficulties inherited from the previous government, the administration is working to stabilize the cedi, reduce inflation, and create jobs.

Through careful financial planning, Mahama’s government aims to restore economic stability and ensure that public funds are used efficiently.

    About DDEP

The Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) is an initiative by the Government of Ghana aimed at restructuring the country’s domestic debt to ensure long-term macroeconomic stability.

The DDEP concluded successfully with the issuance and settlement of new bonds, which have now been listed to serve as the new benchmark securities for the fixed income market. Coupon and principal payments on the old bonds resumed on March 13, 2023. S&P Global Ratings acknowledged the completion of the DDEP by upgrading Ghana’s local currency sovereign credit ratings from selective default (SD) to ‘CCC+/C’. The program saw a high participation rate, with the majority of eligible bonds being tendered. The government is now focusing on engaging with external creditors to ensure overall debt sustainability.

  • NSS Scandal: 72-year-old Kenyan, other ‘oldies’ names discovered on NSA payroll

NSS Scandal: 72-year-old Kenyan, other ‘oldies’ names discovered on NSA payroll

An investigation by The Fourth Estate has revealed serious irregularities in the National Service Authority (NSA) payroll, including the name of a 72-year-old Kenyan, Kwame Donkor, who was wrongly listed as a beneficiary.

The investigation found that Donkor was added to the payroll without an official ID card, which is unusual. Instead, a photo was used. However, when The Fourth Estate ran a reverse image search, they discovered that the photo actually belonged to Emmanuel Mutio, a Human Resource Manager at a private IT company in Kenya.

Another shocking finding was that the same name appeared on the payroll 226 times as a registered beneficiary.

The Fourth Estate initially uncovered the issue in November 2024, but the NSA obtained a court order preventing them from publishing the findings. After the court later lifted the injunction, the report was finally released. The investigation examined payroll records from 2017 to 2023, as well as the 2024 national service year.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Kwaku Krobea Asante, Manager of the Independent Journalism Project under the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), described the findings as alarming.

He noted that the payroll included names of people over 80 or 90 years old, along with fake index numbers, raising concerns about widespread fraud.

“Ghost names in the sense that what the NSA tells us as the number of personnel is different from what they have in their data. This data, we believe, eventually makes its way into the payroll and gets paid. Now, the government has confirmed this.”

“Beyond that, we see how they do this—how they pack the payroll with ghost names, which is what the story is trying to expose. How they use over-age individuals, some as old as 80 or 90 years, to falsify records. How they create fake index numbers in the name of universities to justify these names.”

“Funny names keep appearing—a single name could be repeated 226 times. Such a person supposedly completed the same university, studied the same program, in the same year, and was deployed multiple times. A lot of oddities in the data suggest that these entries were deliberately manipulated.”

President Mahama has ordered an investigation into suspected fake names on the National Service Authority (NSA) payroll.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the president’s spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, a recent headcount of national service personnel revealed possible ghost names.

This verification process was done at the request of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as part of efforts to clear outstanding allowances dating back to August 2024.

After completing the headcount, the Finance Ministry released GHS 226,019,224 to pay 98,145 verified national service personnel.

“This figure is 81,885 less than the 180,030 names presented by the previous management of the Authority for allowance payment in 2024,” the minister’s statement said.

Kotoko’s Nana Pooley’s murderer – Club lawyer confirms

Asante Kotoko’s lawyer, Sarfo Duku, has announced that the police have identified Pooley’s killer. Duku revealed that police documents and statements from suspects point to a man named Braimah as the person responsible for the stabbing. Unfortunately, Braimah is still at large.

On February 2, 2025, a tragedy occurred in the football community when Nana Pooley, a loyal Asante Kotoko fan, was fatally stabbed during the club’s match against Nsoatreman. The incident began with a player altercation on the field and quickly spread to the stands, resulting in the tragic event.

After the stabbing, the Ghana Police Service launched an investigation to find justice for Pooley’s family. This led to the arrest of several suspects, including Nsoatreman owner Ignatius Baffour-Awuah.

While investigations are ongoing, Asante Kotoko hosted a memorial on Sunday, February 16, 2025, to honor their late supporter.

Fans from different Ghana Premier League clubs attended to show their respect.

  • Neymar’s father says the star wants to sign an extended contract with Santos

Neymar’s father says the star wants to sign an extended contract with Santos

Neymar’s father and agent, Neymar da Silva Santos Sr., revealed that Neymar wants to stay at Santos after this summer.

The Brazilian star returned to his childhood club on January 31, signing a contract that runs until June, after mutually ending his deal with Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia.

Due to injuries, Neymar only played seven matches for Al Hilal since his €90 million ($94 million) transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023.

“Our project is not just for five months, it is a contract that we are considering renewing,” Neymar Sr. told TNT Brasil. “We didn’t come here to compete for five months, it was to give Santos the opportunity to restructure itself, to find partners for the club to rebuild itself.”

Neymar, 33, scored his first goal for Santos since returning to Brazil when he converted a penalty he had earned in his team’s 3-1 win over Agua Santa in Sunday’s São Paulo state championship game.

The former Barcelona star also set up Guilherme for Santos’ third goal.
“Important win, well done team, let’s go SANTOS,” Neymar wrote on Instagram.

Neymar, who has not managed to play all 90 minutes in a game for Santos so far, said he is focusing on the present rather than thinking about his future.

Asked about his father’s comments, Neymar said after Sunday’s game: “Let’s take it easy. It’s a contract we made not just between the two of us. One is helping the other. Santos opened the doors for me to reacquaint myself with football, with my joy. I didn’t sign a long contract because I didn’t know how I was going to get back, how I was going to feel in those months. Anything can happen.”

Santos president Marcelo Teixeira is hopeful Neymar will remain at the club at least until the 2026 World Cup. However, sources told ESPN that the player’s wish is to return to play in Europe next season. Moreover, that he is using his time at Santos to recover his technical and physical abilities after the ACL injury that kept him sidelined for over a year until October 2024.

Neymar has reason to be cautious. He recently recovered from a hamstring injury he picked up in November in just his second game back for Al Hilal after being sidelined for a year following a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee.

“As long as I’m on the field I will give myself 100%,” Neymar added. “Let’s take it easy, let’s wait for these moments, enjoy these games. Santos knows the love I feel for this club, the respect I have for them. It’s the beginning of a great era for Santos, I’m sure Santos will rise again and return to the top.”

Santos are back in Brazil’s Serie A, a year after being relegated for the first time.

  • Neymar nets first goal after return to Santos

Neymar nets first goal after return to Santos

Neymar scored his first goal in 16 months with a penalty, helping Santos achieve a 3-1 victory over Agua Santa in the Paulista Championship on Sunday. The Brazilian star expressed his happiness to be back on the field after a long injury break.

He successfully converted the penalty in the 14th minute, with Thaciano adding another goal, and Guilherme finishing with a third goal in the 70th minute, assisted by Neymar.

Neymar’s previous goal was for Al Hilal in October 2023. A severe knee injury limited him to just seven matches after joining the Saudi club in 2023.

“I’m happy to be playing again. I feel I’m improving,” he said. “Obviously I’m not going to be 100% physically, it’s only my fourth game but I’m getting better and better.

“I was anxious to score and wanted to dedicate this to the fans and my family.”

Neymar started his professional football career at 17 with Santos in 2009, where he scored 136 goals and assisted 64 times in 225 matches, leading the team to their first Copa Libertadores title in nearly five decades in 2011.

In 2013, he transferred to Barcelona, and then in August 2017, he made a record-breaking move to Paris Saint-Germain for 222 million euros ($232 million). Later, he joined Al Hilal for about 90 million euros.

According to Brazilian media, Neymar’s contract with Santos lasts until the end of June.

“We’re helping each other, Santos are helping me, they’ve opened doors for me to rediscover soccer, to rediscover joy,” Neymar said when asked about extending the contract.

“I didn’t want to sign a long contract because I didn’t know how I was going to come back. I didn’t know how I was going to feel during these months. Let’s enjoy these moments, its the start of a great era for Santos.”

Santos next host Noroeste in the Paulista on Wednesday.

  • Don’t argue, disrespect the referee – Hanci Flick advices Barca squad after Bellingham red card

Don’t argue, disrespect the referee – Hanci Flick advices Barca squad after Bellingham red card

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, has urged his players to show respect to referees and avoid arguing with them. His comments come after Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham was sent off for confronting the referee during their 1-1 draw against Osasuna.

The referee, Jose Luis Munuera Montero, said that Bellingham said “f* you,” which led to his immediate dismissal. However, Bellingham insisted that he actually said “f* off” and that it was directed at himself out of frustration, not the referee.

After the match, Bellingham insisted he did not insult the referee and called the situation a misunderstanding. The following day, he apologized on social media for putting his team in a difficult situation.

He wrote: “Enough said about the misunderstanding, just wanted to apologize again for leaving my teammates in such a tough position and thank the fans for their support and understanding. See you at home on Wednesday.”

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s home game against Rayo Vallecano on Monday, Flick emphasized that he had reminded his players to stay calm and avoid conflicts with match officials.

“It’s disrespect. For me, it’s like that. But I don’t have to decide (the punishments),” he told a press conference on Sunday.

“I don’t like this behaviour and I said this today to my players because it’s very important. It is not good for the team when you do this and get the red card. It’s a weakness and we don’t like that.

“We have one person on the pitch who is allowed to discuss with the referee and that is the captain. We have to accept that.”

Third-placed Barca can return to the top of LaLiga with a win over Rayo later on Monday.

Lille’s Nabil Bentaleb announces return with a goal one year after heart attack incident

Nabil Bentaleb could not have scripted his comeback any better after the Lille midfielder marked his return to the side following a heart attack last year with a goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win at Stade Rennais.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United player suffered a cardiac arrest on June 18 and there were doubts about the 30-year-old’s future in the game.

However, he was given the green light to return to competitive football on Wednesday when the French Football Federation (FFF) cleared him to play after a medical commission met to assess his condition.

The Algeria international scored the opener in the 80th minute — four minutes after coming off the bench — and ran to the Lille bench to celebrate his first Ligue 1 goal for his hometown club with teammates and coaching staff.

“It’s worthy of a film,” Lille coach Bruno Genesio told reporters. “He deserved it … it’s an incredible, wonderful story.

“Nabil’s goal put us on cloud nine, it’s hard to describe … that will remain engraved in the history of the club, of this season. And in Nabil’s mind, of course.”

Before his heart attack, Nabil Bentaleb was performing exceptionally well for Lille. He had become a key player in the midfield since joining the club in August 20231. In the 2023/24 season, he appeared in 34 matches across all competitions and was known for his dominant play and contributions to the team.

Lille OSC is currently performing quite well in Ligue 1. They are placed 4th in the standings with 9 wins, 8 draws, and 4 losses from 21 matches. They are just 2 points behind AS Monaco in 3rd place.

  • Liverpool keep season ticket prices unchanged for 2025-26

Liverpool keep season ticket prices unchanged for 2025-26

Liverpool have confirmed they will freeze general admission and season ticket prices for next season after supporters warned the club they were at risk of forcing out local and generational fans.

Last month, a number of Liverpool supporter groups teamed up to write an open letter to the club, warning that increased ticket prices threatened to “kill the Kop.” Ticket prices rose by 2% ahead of this season.

A meeting was subsequently held between the club and the supporters’ board to discuss the cost of tickets next term and Liverpool have now confirmed that there will be no further price rises for the 2025-26 season.

As well as adult prices remaining the same, junior tickets will also continue to be frozen at £9 ($11.34) for the 10th season in a row, and are the same price as a portion of local tickets, which have been available to those with a Liverpool postcode since the 2016-17 campaign.

Liverpool say the latest price freeze comes despite significant increases in Anfield matchday operating costs and continued rises in the cost of football operations in general.

Liverpool’s announcement comes amid discontent from Manchester United fans, with the Old Trafford club having made the unpopular decision to raise ticket prices to £66 mid-season. In an open letter to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe last month, supporter group M.U.S.T issued a warning about the impact of further increases.

They warned such price rises could lead to “outright rebellion” in the near future.

Ahead of Liverpool’s clash against United last month, supporters from both clubs united under the Football Supporters’ Association campaign slogan #StopExploitingLoyalty to protest against rises.

Frustration with rising ticket prices has been evident among fans across the Premier League, with Crystal Palace the only top flight club not to raise prices for this season.

  • Pep ‘afraid’ Man City have little chance of winning playoff round against Real Madrid

Pep ‘afraid’ Man City have little chance of winning playoff round against Real Madrid

Pep Guardiola admits that Manchester City have a very slim chance—just “1%”—of staying in the Champions League as they prepare to face Real Madrid in the second leg of their playoff round on Wednesday in Spain.

Real Madrid, who won their 16th Champions League title by beating Borussia Dortmund in last season’s final, secured a 3-2 victory at the Etihad last week. They scored twice in the final minutes, overturning a 2-1 lead that had been given to City by Erling Haaland’s two goals.

Manchester City now face a tough challenge, as they have only won once at the Bernabéu—a 2-1 win in the round of 16 back in February 2020. To stay in the competition, they must find a way to defeat Carlo Ancelotti’s side on their home turf.

Guardiola, who has coached Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the past, admits the task ahead is extremely difficult. However, he remains hopeful that City still have a slight chance of making it to the next round.

“The margin to win in Bernabéu in that position [3-2 down], everybody knows that if you ask before the game, the percentage to go through, I don’t know, we arrive at 1%, or I don’t know what,” Guardiola said.

“It will be minimal, but as much as you have a chance, we will try, that’s for sure, you know? “The chance is minor because the result was not good — five minutes ago, with 2-1, it would be different.

“But with 2-3, the chance is less, but as much as you have a chance, we are going to take it, and we’ll see what happens.”
City have endured their worst season since Guardiola took charge in 2016 during this campaign, losing 12 games in all competitions and surrendering their title hopes by mid-season.

And the City coach admits that, while this season has been hugely disappointing, Saturday’s 4-0 home win against Newcastle could provide a springboard for a recovery going into final weeks of the campaign.

“Listen, there are many, many games that we didn’t play the level we play, and at the end, we lost it,” Guardiola said.

“And that was not just the three points, it’s how it is affecting our minds for the next game. “It happened a lot of times. This season, the reality is that we have been miles, miles away.
