Check out list of 11 companies that have been granted new mining licences recently

Concerns over the ongoing destruction of Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves due to illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) have sparked widespread outrage.

In recent weeks, numerous groups have taken to the streets, protesting and urging President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government to take decisive action to end the galamsey menace across the country.

Among those calling for change are religious leaders, activists, and even members of the president’s own party. Many have suggested that stopping the issuance of new mining licences would allow the government to tackle the existing problems before more companies are given permits.

Despite these demands, however, the government seems to be moving in a different direction. Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, recently revealed a list of new mining leases that had just been approved.

According to information from the Ghana Mining Repository, 11 companies were granted permits in the past few days.

Ablakwa highlighted that these approvals coincided with a meeting between President Akufo-Addo and Organised Labour, during which the president was appealing for the postponement of a planned nationwide strike set for October 10.

“You have not seen the worst. Let me reveal to you this morning to my shock, and I’m sure many Ghanaians will be shocked this morning, particularly the Organised Labour.

To my shock, while the president was meeting with Organised Labour, that same day would you believe that new licenses were being issued for these companies to start mining? That same 3rd of October, two days ago, 11 new licenses to companies. Shocking!” he stated in an interview.

It is worth mentioning that some young protesters who hit the streets on September 22 to protest against the destruction of Ghana’s water bodies, led by Democracy Hub, were arrested and have since been remanded in police custody for 2 weeks.

They are due to appear at the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.

Cocoa Carriers Association starts indefinite strike action today

Cocoa Carriers Association has directed its members at depots in Tema, Takoradi, and Kumasi under the Cocoa Marketing Company Limited to begin an indefinite sit-down strike starting Monday, October 7, 2024, over concerns about their working conditions.

Back in 2022, the Association staged a similar strike, demanding better wages and improved working conditions.

That action resulted in thousands of bags of cocoa beans being left unhandled at warehouses belonging to the Cocoa Marketing Company Limited.

Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, the National Chairman of the Association, Raymond Atanga Abobiga, urged all members to fully support the upcoming strike.

“We are going to report at work but will be at the gate of the various warehouses and then we are not going to work until they attend to our needs and our demands.

“I want the management of COCOBOD and our directors to know that we are not against an individual and that we are fighting a just cause,” he stated.

Ex-Ejisu Juaben MCE Yamoah Ponkoh passes away

Former Chief Executive of the Ejisu Juaben Municipal Assembly, Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh, during John Mahama’s tenure, has sadly passed away.

The news of his death emerged on the afternoon of Sunday, October 6. While the exact cause is yet to be confirmed, sources close to the situation report that he had been battling an illness for several weeks.

A prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ponkoh held several key roles throughout his political journey.

According to Myjoyonline, he was admitted to Living Waters Hospital in Kumasi last week but, after being discharged, passed away at home.

The unexpected passing of Afrifa Yamoah Ponkoh has plunged many into deep mourning, especially within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), where he was respected for his leadership and commitment to public service.

Following the heartbreaking news, NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, conveyed his sincere condolences to the family in a heartfelt Facebook post.

Gyamfi’s message captured the collective sorrow of those who admired Mr. Ponkoh’s significant contributions to both the party and the country.

Video: You are my son, there’s nothing – Mahama to Shatta Wale as he kneels for forgiveness

Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale has once again sought the forgiveness of former President John Dramani Mahama, asking to be pardoned for his past actions. He apologised for his public outbursts against the NDC, which had caused a strain in their relationship.

In a warm response, Mahama told him, “Oh, it’s nothing, you’re my son, and I hold nothing against you.”

Shatta Wale recently revealed that former President John Mahama helped him purchase his first house, a gesture he deeply appreciates and says he will never forget.

The dancehall artist emphasised that he could never be ungrateful to Mahama for this significant support.

In response, Mahama assured Shatta Wale that he would speak to party officials whom the musician might have offended in the past and seek to reconcile the differences.

Shatta Wale had previously been a favorite of Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) until he publicly requested the party to stop using his music for their rallies, campaigns, and other political events.

The rift began when the NDC believed Shatta Wale’s hit song “Mahama Paper” was an endorsement of the former president. Shatta Wale swiftly clarified his neutral stance, insisting that the party should pay if they intended to use the song for official purposes.

Don’t blame Ten Hag, blame the players – Man Utd’s Maguire defends coach

Harry Maguire has called on Manchester United’s players to take accountability for their recent poor performances, rather than placing the blame on embattled manager Erik ten Hag.

With just three wins from nine matches this season, Ten Hag faces increasing scrutiny as United prepare for their upcoming clash against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Tensions escalated further after United squandered a two-goal advantage in a 3-3 draw against FC Porto in the Europa League on Thursday. However, Maguire believes the responsibility lies with the players, not the manager, for the team’s struggles.

“As a footballer, it’s easy to look around and blame other people and blame your teammate or blame the staff or the tactics,” Maguire said.

“You’ve got to look at yourself. We’re the ones that go on the pitch. We’re the ones that have to defend. You’ve got to take responsibility.”

Sources have told ESPN that Ten Hag could face the sack if his team loses at Villa Park on Sunday.

United did the double over Villa last season — winning 2-1 at Villa Park in February — and Maguire believes a similar result on Sunday could finally kick-start their season.

“We’ve got to find belief within ourselves,” he said. “Take the belief from what we did last season at Villa Park. It was on fire last season there. Then we went there and got the victory that we needed last season. And we feel like we’re playing better than we were last season.

“The results haven’t been there. I feel like we should have more points on the board. But they’re not, so we need to do something about it starting with Sunday.”

Harry Maguire has experienced a rollercoaster week, coming off the bench to score a stoppage-time equaliser in Manchester United’s 3-3 draw against FC Porto, despite learning earlier that day that he had been excluded from the latest England squad.

The 31-year-old expressed his surprise at interim head coach Lee Carsley’s decision but shared that he had been reassured about his future with the national team.

“He [Carsely] told me I’m a big part of the future,” Maguire said. “He just wants to see the other lads playing in this camp. And he doesn’t want to take me if I’m not going to start either game [against Greece and Finland], which is fair enough.

“Of course I’m disappointed. I want to play every game for England. But I know where he’s coming from, and I’ve got to make sure that I perform when I’m on the pitch and give him no option to leave me out.

“I was a little bit surprised, I must say. But obviously I back his decision and he’s told me I’m part of the future.”. He emphasized the underutilization of solar energy in Africa and described the situation as tragic

A/R: Fire ravages sheds at Sokoban wood village, seek support from NDC, NPP

Woodworkers at Sokoban Wood Village in the Ashanti Region are feeling devastated and powerless following a recent fire that has severely impacted their livelihoods.

The affected traders have expressed their concerns over the destruction of their primary source of income, leaving them burdened with significant bank loans to repay.

On October 3, 2024, a fire broke out in parts of Sokoban Wood Village, destroying around 18 sheds along with their contents.

Victims of the disaster have reported feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility of repaying the loans they had taken out for their businesses.

DO3 Peter Addai, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service, stated that investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.

“We quickly had to call in other fire tenders for assistance. So together we had about four fire tenders assisting to salvage the situation.

The fire affected 18 shops that deal mainly in plywood and other wood products, and there were no casualties. We were able to salvage 32 shops,” he stated.

Some of the affected victims spoke with Channel One News, highlighting the challenges they are going through because of the incident, and vowed to vote for any political party that will come to their aid.

“I have a lot of dependents. I have children going to school, my wife, my mother. My mother is a widow. I am taking care of a lot of people, so this thing is going to affect me a lot. I can’t tell; I don’t know what is going to happen. I don’t know what to do,” a worker stated.

“This is going to affect the schooling of my children; one is at Legon, one is at KNUST. How will we take care of them? The government should intervene, whether NPP, NDC, or Cheddar. Whichever party wants us to vote for them should come to our aid,” another worker stressed.

Akufo-Addo denies claims of partisan arrest of anti-galamsey protesters

President Nana Akufo-Addo has dismissed allegations that the recent arrest and detention of 53 protesters was an effort to suppress dissent in the country.

Speaking in an interview with France 24 on Friday, October 4, he emphasised his support for peaceful protests as a legitimate form of democratic expression.

This statement follows the arrest of 53 individuals who were demonstrating against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

“I am not responsible for jailing people in Ghana. The courts in Ghana are independent institutions, and they have been so through the Fourth Republic. People misconduct themselves and are brought before the court; it is for the court; it is for the court to deal with them; it has nothing to do with the executive; and their behaviour is what landed them in trouble with the police and the court.

“How can a president whose political career was aided by leading protests have problems with protests? I don’t have problems with protests, and nothing is done in Ghana to prevent people from airing their views.”

The recent protest aimed to spotlight the environmental destruction caused by galamsey, an illegal mining practice that has devastated Ghana’s rivers and forests.

While President Nana Akufo-Addo acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, he reiterated the importance of peaceful, lawful demonstrations, encouraging protesters to collaborate with authorities to develop lasting solutions.

Shifting his focus to regional matters, Akufo-Addo expressed disappointment with the decisions of military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to exit the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following their coups.

Despite this, he remains hopeful that diplomatic efforts will eventually lead to their reintegration into the regional bloc.

Discussing the broader security challenges in the Sahel, Akufo-Addo noted the worsening instability since French troops withdrew in 2023.

The exit of these forces, previously engaged in the fight against extremist groups, has sparked a rise in militant activity.

The president urged West African nations to strengthen their cooperation to address the growing extremism in the region, calling on ECOWAS to intensify its peacebuilding efforts.

Former Speaker Mike Oquaye blasts “tragic” mismanagement of natural resources in Africa’s

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, has voiced his strong dismay over Africa’s management of its natural resources, calling the situation “tragic,” particularly in relation to the continent’s failure to harness solar energy effectively.

Delivering a speech during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Christian Service University in Kumasi on Friday, Prof. Oquaye criticised Africa’s inability to fully leverage its rich natural resources for sustainable development.

He underscored the vast potential of solar power, noting that this valuable resource remains largely untapped across the continent.

“The way Africa is dealing with natural resources that God has endowed us with is very tragic,” Prof. Oquaye said, adding,

“The BBC reported recently that solar energy production in the Netherlands is higher than the whole of Africa put together, and Africa is the home of the sun.

God will not be happy with this,” he stated.

Prof. Oquaye called on African leaders to take bold steps in harnessing the continent’s immense solar potential and to invest in renewable energy initiatives that can foster sustainable development and long-term economic growth.

Allow Bediatuo to continue treatment at one of your Agenda 111 Hospitals – Akufo-Addo told

Entertainment critic Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, also known as Bullgod, has urged the government to bring the ailing Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, back to Ghana for the continuation of his recovery process.

Bullgod argued that since the presidency has confirmed Bediatuo Asante’s stable condition while receiving treatment in the United States, it would be more appropriate for him to continue his medical care in one of Ghana’s hospitals.

He suggested that Bediatuo could be treated at one of the facilities constructed under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s Agenda 111 project, some of which are reportedly completed.

During his appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz on October 5, 2024, Bullgod emphasized that such a move would help restore public confidence in the country’s healthcare system.

He further stated that the fact that a government official is receiving medical attention abroad undermines trust in local hospitals.

“I learnt he [Bediatuo Asante] is in the US for treatment. We should fly him to Ghana to continue the healing since he is said to be in a stable condition. We have hospitals in the country. The Agenda 111 hospitals are there to help. He could be taken to Korle-Bu or 37 Military Hospital as well,” he said in Twi.

This comes after the presidency released a statement to assure the public that Asante Bediatuo is in a stable condition and asked for prayers for him to aid his recovery.

About the Agenda 111 Hospital Initiative:

The project’s aim, as outlined by the President, is to guarantee that every district and region in Ghana has access to high-quality healthcare services.

This initiative is designed to enhance the healthcare infrastructure, aligning with the government’s pledge to provide universal healthcare for all citizens while supporting the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3).

Additionally, the project seeks to fulfill the government’s commitment to establishing a hospital in every district and region, thereby expanding healthcare coverage across the country and improving access to medical services for all Ghanaians.

Ghanaians residing in the United Kingdom have expressed their support for fellow citizens in Ghana by participating in the escalating anti-galamsey protests.

Gathering outside the Ghana High Commission in London, the demonstrators sought to highlight the severe impacts of illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” on both the environment and local communities in Ghana.

The demonstration attracted a varied crowd, encompassing students, professionals, and community leaders, all coming together for a shared purpose.

They held placards with messages such as “Blood, Gold, Greed!” “Water No Bi Politics,” and “Stop Illegal Mining Now!.”

Galamseyers’ chant “we won’t stop” as they embark on a ‘mini’ demonstration

In Accra, a group of young protesters took to the streets to voice their opposition to illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.

In a contrasting display, some illegal miners staged their own protest at mining sites, demonstrating their determination to continue their operations.

These miners, numbering around seven, tied red bands around their tools and shouted slogans emphasising their refusal to abandon illegal mining.

They pounded their shovels and pickaxes on the ground, proclaiming, “We want jobs; we won’t stop.”

The galamsey workers extract gold from the ground, often finding it in metallic dust form, and they also process oxide or sulphide gold ore with the use of liquid mercury.

Simultaneously, the SayNoToGalamsey demonstration, which concluded on October 5, 2024, aimed to highlight the severe environmental damage caused by ongoing illegal mining activities.

The protest called for urgent action from the government and the Ghana Police Service, specifically demanding the release of individuals who had been arrested during previous demonstrations.

Prove yourself else we would come after you– Wontumi to govt appointees over NPP campaign

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a stern warning to government appointees regarding their lack of engagement in the party’s campaign for the upcoming 2024 elections.

He emphasised that any appointee who fails to demonstrate their commitment to the party and the positions they hold will face consequences after the elections.

Wontumi pointed out that even candidates like Kennedy Agyapong, who are running against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, are actively campaigning on the ground.

He insisted that appointees must set aside any complacency and actively participate in efforts to secure the party’s continued governance.

“If you supported Dr. Bawumia during the primaries, you have not done anything. He wants to be president, and that is what you should support him to achieve. Kennedy Agyapong, who contested him, is campaigning and working to ensure that we win.

They have had to prove themselves that they are party members.

In 2016, we won the elections, so if you are an appointee and you don’t prove yourself, we will come after you. Prove yourself.

Kudus scored his first goal of the season by heading in a rebound off the post, breaking his previous goal drought.

Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, and Lucas Paqueta also contributed to the goal tally, securing a convincing win for West Ham and earning them all three points.

Meanwhile, Kudus recently had a heated exchange with West Ham coach Julen Lopetegui during their 1-1 draw against Brentford on September 28, 2024.

The confrontation reportedly occurred after Kudus was substituted at halftime, leading to a disagreement between the player and the coach.

According to The Athletic, Kudus expressed frustration over being subbed off, feeling the manager’s criticism of his performance was unfair.

However, the club hierarchy has assured that the situation has been blown out of proportion, and there is no ongoing tension between the two.

The issue was eventually settled, with Kudus returning to the bench to support his teammates for the remainder of the match.

Ghanaian talent manager Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, popularly known as Bullgod, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his officials to brace themselves for imprisonment after their term ends on January 7, 2025.

Bullgod suggested that the President and his appointees should prioritise the renovation of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, as he believes they will eventually face prosecution for alleged corruption and their involvement in illegal mining (galamsey).

“…Starting from Nana Akufo-Addo to all the presidential staffers, I am giving you a job and the job is very simple; you see the three months that are left, if you know what is good for you, go and renovate Nsawam.

Go and renovate Nsawam because that is where you will spend the rest of your life,” Bullgod said.

Bullgod made these comments while appearing as a guest on UTV’s United Showbiz on Saturday, October 5, 2024.

Recently, the government has faced mounting pressure to address illegal mining. Tensions have further heightened following the arrest and prosecution of protesters opposing illegal mining two weeks ago.

On Saturday, hundreds of Ghanaians concluded a three-day demonstration led by the Citizens Coalition Against Illegal Mining.

The protesters, who were demanding decisive government action against illegal mining and the release of those arrested, marched through the streets of Accra to voice their concerns.

Deputy Bono Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Baba Seidu, has urged politicians and their supporters to manage their emotions and avoid making inflammatory statements that could provoke or anger their political opponents.

He warned that such behaviour could escalate tensions, incite violence, and disrupt the peace currently enjoyed in the nation.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Alhaji Seidu emphasised that political instability would have a detrimental impact, particularly on vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly.

He called on Ghanaians to value and protect the country’s peace with great care.

The Chief Imam also stressed the importance of the security forces in this process, urging law enforcement agencies to remain impartial and professional, avoiding any alignment with political parties.

He emphasised their critical role in maintaining peace and order during, before, and after the December 7 elections.

Speaking during the launch of his campaign at the Obuasi AGA Club House, Ennin outlined his ambitious vision to convert the region’s neglected mining sites into vibrant tourist attractions.

He believes this initiative would stimulate local tourism and generate new economic opportunities for the residents of Obuasi West.

In an interview with Adom News’ Isaac K. Normanyo, Ennin expressed disappointment over the constituency’s stagnation, despite its untapped potential.

He emphasised the urgent need for new leadership, highlighting his long-standing commitment to the community.

Over the years, Ennin has contributed to local development by building toilet facilities for schools, providing interest-free loans to over 2,000 women, and creating employment opportunities for the youth.

His bold plan to revitalise abandoned mining sites showcases his determination to lead the constituency towards progress.

Ennin expressed confidence that, with the support of voters, he can resolve the leadership challenges that have hindered Obuasi West’s development for years, promising a renewed focus on growth and community welfare.

GNAT to go ahead with nationwide strike despite Akufo-Addo’s plea

Thomas Musah, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has reaffirmed the commitment of Organised Labour, particularly GNAT, to move forward with the planned strike against illegal and irresponsible mining on October 10.

In an exclusive interview with Citi News’ Jude Duncan in Accra on Friday, Musah emphasised that the decision to proceed with the industrial action remains firm, despite a recent meeting between Organised Labour and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

During the meeting on October 3, President Akufo-Addo urged the leadership of Organised Labour to exercise patience as the government seeks a lasting solution to the galamsey crisis.

However, Musah clarified that Organised Labour continues to stand by its demands.

These include declaring a state of emergency in mining regions, revoking the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations 2022, withdrawing all licences issued for mining in forest reserves and protected areas, and establishing special courts to prosecute illegal mining offenders.

Musah, who was not present at the meeting, reiterated that the group remains unified in its stance on addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining.

“What’s the definition of more time, With the people dying, what will happen to them? It is for us to make a decision, it is between life and death.”

“Organised Labour, we have all agreed and that is what GNAT is standing by; we agree that there should be a state of emergency on illegal mining. [We still stand by] the decision of Organised Labour on the protest,” he said.

Govt issued 11 new mining licences same day Akufo-Addo met organised labour – Ablakwa alleges

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has raised a significant allegation regarding the issuance of small-scale mining licences.

The MP claims that on October 3, 2024—the very day President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo held a meeting with Organised Labour—11 new mining licenses were issued.

“You have not seen the worse. Let me reveal to you this morning to my shock, and I’m sure many Ghanaians will be shocked this morning, particularly the Organised Labour.

To my shock, while the president was meeting with Organised Labour, that same day would you believe that new licences were being issued for these companies to start mining?

That same 3rd of October, two days ago, 11 new licences to companies. Shocking!” he stated.

In an interview on TV3’s Key Points on October 5, 2024, Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that data supporting his claims could be found on the Ghana Data Mining Repository.

He went on to name the companies he alleged had been granted licences.

Earlier, on October 1, 2024, Organised Labour announced its intent to launch a nationwide strike, scheduled for October 10, to demand a full ban on illegal mining (galamsey).

However, during a private meeting on October 3, 2024, with major union leaders, where the environmental harm caused by illegal mining took centre stage, the president urged the union leaders to reconsider their decision.

He asked for more time to tackle the issues raised and appealed for a postponement of the planned strike.

I avoid English media houses because of my ‘bad’ English – NPP’s Kate Gyamfua

National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfua, has acknowledged her struggle with fluent English. Critics have pointed to this language barrier as a significant drawback, arguing that it hinders her ability to effectively communicate the party’s programs and policies on English-speaking media platforms.

Blaming her poor English skills on her childhood boyfriend, the NPP Organiser noted that her poor English-speaking skills are the reason behind her distance from English media houses.

“You understand English, but you have decided to work in a Twi station. So everyone decides where he or she will be comfortable. I prefer to speak on Twi stations where I can be more articulate and spread my party’s programmes. If I go to a station where they speak English, my comments will be very limited; I won’t have much to say.

I don’t want any problems, which is why I don’t go to English-speaking media houses. I have told you my story: people can choose to say what they want. Whether I am able to speak English or not, I am happy staying in my house.”

“I won’t argue with anyone who says I don’t speak good English. My mother enrolled me in a good school; I attended an experimental school and then to a secondary school, where I got pregnant and came home. When I was young, I had a boyfriend, he attended a local school, and I attended an experimental school, but whenever I spoke English, he made fun of me.

So I was intimidated and decided not to be speaking English anymore to avoid making mistakes. Till now, I hate him for that. I have children; I don’t want to speak English and make mistakes for people to make fun of them.
But the white people I do business with when I speak English, they understand,” she noted in an interview with Adom FM.

She, however, added that, due to her situation, she has ensured that all her children have quality education.

“I have taken all my children to good schools. None of them will do one master’s degree. The little among them will do two master’s degrees. My first child has four master’s degrees.

My children will do things on my own that I was not able to do. I took all my children to schools abroad fully paid by myself and not sponsored by government scholarship,” Kate Gyamfua proudly stated.

4 years to 18 months – Pogba’s doping ban truncated after appeal

Paul Pogba has expressed relief, stating his “nightmare is over” after his four-year doping ban was reduced to 18 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Sources close to the 31-year-old Juventus star informed BBC Sport that he will be able to resume training by January 2025, with eligibility to play from March onwards.

The French midfielder was initially banned in February by Italy’s national anti-doping tribunal (NADO) after testing positive for elevated testosterone levels, a hormone known for boosting endurance.

CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb confirmed to Reuters that the reduced ban took effect on September 11, 2023.

In a statement, Pogba said: “Finally the nightmare is over. I can look forward to the day when I can follow my dreams again.

“I always stated that I never knowingly breached World Anti-Doping Agency regulations when I took a nutritional supplement prescribed to me by a doctor, which does not affect or enhance the performance of male athletes.

“I play with integrity and, although I must accept that this is a strict liability offence, I want to place on record my thanks to the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s judges who heard my explanation.

“This has been a hugely distressing period in my life because everything I have worked so hard for has been put on hold.”

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba personally appeared before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) earlier this summer to contest his doping ban. Pogba had consistently maintained that he would “never knowingly or deliberately” engage in doping and felt the initial ruling was “wrong.”

If the original four-year ban had been upheld, the 2018 World Cup winner would have been sidelined until 2027, at which point he would be 34 years old.

NPP will stay in power for 16 more years; God has given them 24 years of reign – Apostle Osei Sarfo

Pastor of the Pentecostal Christian Assembly Church, Apostle Dr. Kingsley Osei Sarfo, has proclaimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is destined to govern for a total of twenty-four years as it completes its first eight years in office.

In an interview with Okay FM’s Kwame Nkrumah Tikese on the Ade Akye Abia show, he shared that he received a revelation suggesting that the NPP has been granted additional years to lead the nation.

His remarks came in response to a recent prophecy by Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, the founder of the Glorious Word Power Ministry International, who stated that God has returned leadership of the country to John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In addressing Owusu-Bempah’s statement, Apostle Kingsley expressed that the prophecy likely emerged from the latter’s dissatisfaction with the NPP.

He said, “The truth of the matter is that the man (Owusu-Bempah) was offended by the NPP when he was arrested. Some people can make decisions out of anger. He is a man of God, and I respect him very much.

I am sure it is because of anger that he made that statement. But the truth is that the God of Heaven and Earth has given Ghana to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rule for 24 good years.

“… I am telling you the truth. I am saying this without mincing words: God has given Ghana to the NPP for 24 good years, and they have ruled for just 8 years, so they have 16 years more to rule. And note that the 16 years are still there, waiting for them.”

When asked if it was a prophecy, revelation, or prediction, he stated that it was both a prophecy and a revelation.

“It is a prophecy and also a revelation. It is two things. I told the NPP in 2016 that… But when the NPP comes into power, they refuse to adhere to advice until the power is taken away from them again.

So, as for his (Owusu-Bempah’s) prophecy, it shall come to pass, but I want to let the NPP know that they shouldn’t disrespect some of us because we do not have cars, big churches, and the like. God uses us even better than those who have all these things. So, they should take us seriously when we say something to them.

“In 2016, God spoke through me to tell them all these things, but after winning power, they rejected me. They don’t even answer your calls when you call them,” he disclosed in Twi.

Ban PTA if it is interfering with Free SHS – NAGRAT ‘jabs’ govt

National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called on the Ministry of Education to consider abolishing the Parents Association (PA) scheme in Senior High Schools (SHSs) if it undermines the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

This statement follows the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) decision to suspend headteachers from Ahantaman Senior High School and St. Roses Senior High School in Akwatia due to accusations of unauthorised fee collection.

NAGRAT argues that these fees were instituted by the Parents Association rather than the school administrations, deeming the disciplinary action against the headteachers to be unfair.

At a recent press conference, NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu called for the prompt reinstatement of the suspended headteachers, emphasising that the schools should not be penalised for the actions of the Parents Association.

“With the coming in of the Free Senior High School, the role of the PTAs was abandoned. What we now have in the schools is the Parents Association without the teachers,” Mr. Carbonu explained.

He went on to explain that, regarding the suspended headteachers, the Parents Association had independently decided to gather funds for a particular purpose.

“If the ministry feels that the presence of the PAs is negatively affecting the smooth running of the schools within the context of Free SHS, the ministry can ban the formation of PAs outrightly,” Mr. Carbonu added.

2024 elections: Details of Prophet Uebert Angel and Owusu Bempah’s conversation on Mahama’s win

Founder of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, recently shared details of a conversation with British-Zimbabwean Prophet Uebert Angel about a prophetic revelation concerning the 2024 general elections.

Owusu-Bempah revealed that Prophet Angel called him to discuss the predicted winner of the upcoming elections and the necessary steps to ensure the prophecy comes to fruition.

He expressed his gratitude for being approached by a fellow pastor, especially since this was their first communication.

However, Rev. Owusu-Bempah mentioned that he is unaware if any members of the political party have reached out to Prophet Angel regarding the prophecy.

“Prophet Uebert Angel called to discuss with me who will win the 2024 elections. I have never seen him before. He said God has opened his eyes to see who will win the elections, but that person should contact him first.

“So he called the party members. We should ask ourselves if they have done what they were told to do or not,” he said in Twi during an interview with Okay FM.

    Background:

Prophet Uebert Angel gave a prophecy regarding Ghana’s 2024 elections, declaring that John Mahama is God’s chosen leader for the country starting in 2025.

According to the prophecy, Mahama’s path to governance relies on fulfilling three specific conditions, one of which includes a phone call to the prophet from Mahama himself.

Three months later, Prophet Angel provided an update, stating that Mahama had met two of the three requirements necessary for his return to the Jubilee House.

During a sermon at his church, Prophet Uebert Angel urged John Mahama to act quickly, giving him a ten-day deadline to call him and potentially save his re-election campaign.

My English is bad, but it’s my childhood boyfriend’s fault – NPP National Women’s Organiser admits

In an interview with Adom FM, Gyamfua attributed her lack of eloquence to her childhood boyfriend, suggesting that he played a role in her language challenges.

But the white people I do business with when I speak English, they understand.

She, however, added that, due to her situation, she has ensured that all her children have quality education.

“I have taken all my children to good schools. None of them will do one master’s degree. The little among them will do two master’s degrees. My first child has four master’s degrees.

  • 753 Million Barrels of Oil extracted since 2010 – Petroleum Commission announces

753 Million Barrels of Oil extracted since 2010 – Petroleum Commission announces

As of the end of August 2024, approximately 753 million barrels of oil have been extracted since the beginning of commercial production.

The country still possesses reserves of around 2.2 billion barrels of oil that can be extracted.

This total includes about 970 million barrels of oil equivalent that are yet to be produced from three existing fields and the newly approved Pecan field, along with an estimated contingent reserve of 1.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

Egbert Isaac Faibille, Chief Executive Officer (CEO)-Petroleum Commission, said: “It needs to be noted that these contingent reserves are estimated hydrocarbon resources discovered, which are subject to appraisal and commercialisation through approved Plans of Development.”

Mr. Faibille was speaking at the 2024 Local Content Conference and Exhibition in Takoradi

The three-day conference, attended by over 1,000 participants in the oil and gas industry across the continent, was on the theme ‘Attracting exploration and production investments to boost local content-new pathways’.

He said further Exploration and Production (E&P) investments are therefore required to monetise these contingent reserves in the immediate future.

“It is against this backdrop, particularly of the 970 mboe and contingent reserves of 1.2 billion barrels of oil , that the Commission has chosen its theme for this year’s Local Content Conference and Exhibition.

“It is imperative to begin discussions on this issue of attracting investments into the sector and local content maximisation dispassionately, using the broader energy spectrum,” he said.

The PC-CEO pointed out that since the commercial discovery of oil in the Jubilee Field during 2007, the industry has rapidly evolved, attracting major international oil companies and fostering local enterprises.

“Having achieved its first commercial hydrocarbon production from the Jubilee Field in December 2010, barely 40 months after its discovery, Ghana saw a significant uptake in exploration activities leading to over 30 new discoveries offshore Ghana.”

He noted that the Tweneboa Enyenra Ntomme (TEN) and Sankofa Gye Nyame Fields commenced production in August 2016 and May 2017, respectively. This significantly boosted Ghana’s average daily oil output from 100,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) to a peak of approximately 195,000 bbl/d in 2019.

Between 2018 and 2022, recent exploration efforts resulted in six discoveries from a total of seven wells drilled. The successful finds include Pecan South East (Pecan Energies), Nyankom (AGM), Eban (Eni), Akoma (Eni), Afina (Springfield), and Aprokuma (Eni).

“This high success rate is a testament that Ghana’s sedimentary basins remain highly prospective. Of these discoveries, the Pecan Field Plan of Development (PoD) has been approved by the Minister for Energy. It is our expectation that field development will commence soon,” he said.

Leave immediately! – Govt to Ghanaians in Lebanon as country’s conflict with Israel heightens

The Ghanaian government has voiced serious concerns regarding the worsening crisis in Lebanon, where more than one million individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to continuous Israeli airstrikes, including a recent attack in central Beirut.

This situation has intensified fears about the possibility of a large-scale invasion.

In light of the escalating violence, the government released a statement on Friday, October 4, 2024, urging Ghanaians currently in Lebanon to make immediate arrangements to return home using available flights.

To assist in this process, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration recommended that Ghanaian nationals lacking complete documentation reach out to the Embassy of Ghana in Cairo, Egypt, or the Honorary Consulate in Beirut for support.

These initiatives are designed to prioritize the safety and welfare of Ghanaian citizens amid the increasing instability in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the international community, including the United Nations, is actively monitoring developments and striving to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the crisis.

“Considering the deteriorating situation, the government of Ghana encourages all Ghanaian nationals in Lebanon to take advantage of the available flights in Lebanon to immediately leave the country.

“The government entreats all Ghanaians in Lebanon to act promptly on this advice to avoid any emergencies.”

    Background

On Monday, September 23, Israel launched a relentless series of airstrikes across Lebanon, marking the deadliest day in the region since the 2006 conflict with Hezbollah, the influential Iran-backed militant group.

The intense bombardment instilled widespread fear and anguish among the Lebanese population, resulting in the deaths of over 500 individuals, including women and children, while injuring more than 1,800, as reported by local authorities.

As families desperately fled their homes in search of safety, clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah continued in southern Lebanon on Wednesday.

Reports from the Israeli military, Hezbollah, and the Lebanese army confirmed active fighting in at least two border regions, particularly around closed military zones where Israeli troops and equipment had been concentrated.

  • “Neither here nor there” – VRA Senior Staff blasts govt’s proposed merger in energy sector

“Neither here nor there” – VRA Senior Staff blasts govt’s proposed merger in energy sector

Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, has expressed ongoing concerns regarding the government’s proposed merger of the Bui Power Authority and the VRA.

He questions whether this merger will genuinely lead to lower energy costs for consumers.

This statement comes in light of a recent government bill aiming to consolidate the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG), Bui Power Authority, Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO), and the VRA into two distinct entities.

In an interview with Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday, Mr. Ahia raised critical points about the current challenges within the energy sector.

He noted that the VRA currently provides the lowest cost per kilowatt-hour in Ghana’s energy market.

Furthermore, he highlighted that Independent Power Producers (IPPs) account for approximately 50% of the nation’s energy supply, casting doubt on the effectiveness of the proposed merger.

“There is a big problem in the sector. The VRA today is the cheapest in terms of cost per kilowatt hour in the market space in Ghana. The IPPs are there and contribute about 50% of the energy demand of this country.

“So when we say we are merging Bui and VRA, that notwithstanding again, the cost per kilowatt hour at Bui is far higher than VRA.”

“So the agenda to say when I put Bui and VRA together it is going to bring the cost down to the consumer is neither here nor there. How will that happen?” Ahia stated.

Boat capsize in Congo kills 78 nationals

A tragic ferry disaster on Lake Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in the deaths of at least 78 individuals. The vessel was nearing its destination in Goma, having departed from Minova in South Kivu, when it capsized on Thursday morning.

Footage shared on social media captures the moment the boat leaned precariously before submerging. Reports indicate that there were 278 people on board at the time of the incident, according to a local governor.

“It’ll take at least three days to get the exact numbers, because not all the bodies have been found yet,” Governor Jean Jacques Purisi told Reuters news agency.

A local activist, Aaron Ashuza, who was at the scene, told the BBC he saw bodies being pulled out of the river and said the injured had been taken to hospital.

At least two children died after they were taken to hospital after the accident, according to AFP.

Speaking from his hospital bed, 51-year-old survivor Alfani Buroko Byamungu, told Reuters news agency that conditions on the water seemed “calm”.

He added: “I saw people sinking, many went under. I saw women and children sinking in the water, and I myself was on the verge of drowning, but God helped me.”

Bahati Selemani, a dock worker who took part in the rescue effort, described what happened.

“We saw the boat start to capsize. We noticed that the boat was very overloaded and there were also strong waves,” he told AP news agency.

“After that, the boat started to capsize little by little. Those who were upstairs started to throw themselves into the lake, and the boat capsized directly into the lake.”

Accidents of this nature are frequent in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where overcrowding on boats is commonplace. Passengers often lack access to life jackets and many do not know how to swim, exacerbating the risks.

The situation is further complicated by the absence of passenger manifests on some vessels, making rescue efforts challenging. This tragedy follows a recent incident where more than 100 people perished while traveling on the Niger River.

University of Ghana denies rumours of compulsory Apple devices for Computer Science students

University of Ghana has publicly refuted a misleading rumour claiming that students in the Department of Computer Science are required to purchase Apple devices for their studies.

This unfounded assertion suggested that acquiring Apple products was necessary for academic completion.

In an official statement, the University firmly denied these allegations, clarifying that there is no mandate for any students to acquire specific Apple devices for their courses.

The administration urged students, parents, and guardians to ignore this misinformation.

The University emphasised its dedication to offering a technology-driven and inclusive educational environment, ensuring that students are not at a disadvantage based on the devices they opt to use.

Additionally, the management reassured all stakeholders that its academic procedures are transparent and uphold the institution’s core principles.

The confusion appears to have originated from a fabricated message alleging that performance issues within the Department of Computer Science were linked to non-Apple devices.

This false claim implied that students using Android devices were experiencing software compatibility issues that negatively impacted their academic performance.

It further stated that Apple devices were essential for better outcomes and suggested students invest in iPhones and laptops with specific features.

University urged everyone to confirm future information through official sources and to be cautious of falling for such misleading narratives.

Family of Moesha Boduong’s threatens a lawsuit against blogger who leaked her recovery video

The family of actress Moesha Boduong is reportedly gearing up for legal action against a blogger who shared unauthorised videos of her recovery process.

The blogger, who attended the same church where Moesha sought divine healing for her stroke-related issues, filmed and disseminated private footage of the actress without her consent.

Moesha’s uncle, Ahmedu Boduong, voiced the family’s outrage over the violation of her privacy, particularly as she had been recuperating peacefully at home.

He noted that neighbours had shown respect for their privacy during her recovery, refraining from taking photos or videos.

The family is especially incensed that the breach of privacy occurred in a place of worship, emphasising that the blogger’s actions were motivated by a desire for online attention and misrepresentation of the situation.

In response to claims that Moesha had been fully healed by the pastor, her uncle clarified that her recovery was due to a combination of factors, including assistance from various spiritualists prior to her church visit, alongside the church’s support.

The family has declared their intent to take legal action against the blogger and issued a warning to anyone else considering sharing sensitive videos of Moesha.

Be peaceful and responsible – UN Ghana urges in protests against galamsey

United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Charles Abani, has underscored the critical need for responsible mining practices and sustainable development, urging collaboration among all sectors to safeguard the nation’s future.

He highlighted the severe consequences of illegal mining, or galamsey, which contribute to worsening poverty, destroys livelihoods, harms the environment, contaminates water sources, disrupts communities, and facilitates illegal financial activities.

In a statement on Saturday, Abani encouraged protesters to remain peaceful and responsible, while calling on law enforcement to maintain professionalism, ensure public safety, and respect civil rights during demonstrations.

He appealed to key leaders from government, political parties, traditional and religious bodies, civil society, and the private sector to join forces in tackling the illegal mining issue.

Reaffirming the UN’s support for initiatives in line with the #PactfortheFuture, Abani emphasized the importance of sustainability, climate action, and environmental preservation, stressing that these efforts are vital to ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future for both present and future generations.

He concluded by calling for collective ambition and unity in overcoming the challenges posed by galamsey.

Act responsibly and stop courting unnecessary sympathy – Prof Gyampo tells govt

President of the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-UTAG), Professor Ransford Gyampo, has openly condemned the government’s approach in addressing the illegal mining issue, also known as galamsey.

His criticism follows a private meeting between President Akufo-Addo and leaders of Organised Labour, held on Thursday, where the president requested more time to tackle the galamsey problem.

The meeting was arranged after Organised Labour declared an indefinite strike scheduled to begin on October 10.

The strike was announced on Tuesday, October 1, after the government failed to meet their demands for an outright ban on all forms of mining and the declaration of a state of emergency to stop galamsey activities.

President Akufo-Addo urged Organised Labour to reconsider the strike, reassuring them of his determination to address their grievances.

On Friday, October 4, Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar issued a statement reaffirming the government’s resolve to deal with the illegal mining crisis.

However, in an interview with Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Prof Gyampo expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s communication, stating that Organised Labour had not yet fully updated its members on the situation, making the government’s announcement premature and counterproductive.

“First of all, Organised Labour is yet to meet with its membership to brief them on what really transpired. So, I don’t think that it lies in the mouth of the Minister of Information to deliberately issue that statement to create the impression that something is being done when Organised Labour has not even briefed its membership. It doesn’t help,” Prof. Gyampo stated.

He further criticised the government’s approach, suggesting that it was more focused on gaining public sympathy rather than taking effective action against galamsey.

“Why the indecent haste to break the news, to achieve what? This is a fight against galamsey. It is not about asking for better conditions of service where you can use some of these propagandistic tendencies to try to sway or win public sympathy.

“Members of the public that we are fighting for are dying just as we are also dying. So, it is not about courting unnecessary sympathy; it is about doing the right thing,” he added.

Catholic Church set to stage anti-galamsey protest walk on October 11

Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, together with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, and Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals, will spearhead an Environmental Prayer Walk Against Galamsey on Friday, October 11, 2024.

In a press release on October 4, the church emphasised the walk’s purpose: to highlight the devastating impact of illegal mining in Ghana and urge swift government intervention to stop it.

The demonstration seeks to press for a state of emergency on mining operations, particularly in areas surrounding rivers, water bodies, and forests.

Through this action, organisers hope to push for stronger measures to halt environmental damage caused by galamsey and encourage sustainable development practices for future generations.

The protest will begin at Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka at 10:00 am, with participants marching through key Accra locations like Castle Road, Ridge Roundabout, Parliament House, and Oxford Street, culminating at Christ the King Parish in Cantonments.

A petition is set to be delivered to President Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House during the event, calling for urgent action to tackle the galamsey crisis.

The Catholic Church has extended an open invitation to all Ghanaians—Catholics, Christians of other denominations, Muslims, traditional leaders, civil society groups, environmentalists, and the public—to participate in the peaceful protest.

Organizers emphasised that the demonstration goes beyond prayer; it is also a call for prompt, effective measures to end illegal mining, safeguard the environment, and restore the nation’s natural resources.

During a press briefing in Kumasi, Nana Bediako emphasised her qualifications and experience, describing her as the ideal partner to steer the nation towards economic success.

“As Senior Manager at the Securities & Exchange Commission, Ghana, she helped shape the nation’s financial landscape through strategic oversight of investments, licencing of capital market operators, and the development of critical regulations.

Her role in training market operators and educating investors places her at the forefront of financial empowerment,” he said.

Dr. Maryam Issaka Kriese, a respected scholar, has lectured at both the University of Ghana Business School and the University of Professional Studies, Accra.

She expressed her deep concerns about the environmental devastation caused by galamsey in Ghana, emphasising that the problem affects not only Ghana but also her home country, South Africa.

Chaka Chaka called on the government to take strong measures to reclaim the country’s degraded lands and restore its forests.

During an interview on Citi FM on Friday, October 4, she disclosed her intentions to formally address the president at the upcoming Global Citizen meeting in Ivory Coast.

“There is a Global Citizen meeting in Ivory Coast next week, and President Akufo-Addo will be present. I intend to convey this message to him because we cannot continue to let young people suffer,” she said.

Ms. Chaka Chaka emphasised that youth are aware of the solutions, and it’s time for President Akufo-Addo to turn his words into action.

“We need him to practice what he preaches, so that these minerals can benefit everyone and ensure access to clean drinking water. When we say people shall govern, it is the same people who bring the solutions. We need you to listen to the people of Ghana and do what is right,” she stressed.

  • Accra-Tema motorway left in darkness as street lights go missing

Accra-Tema motorway left in darkness as street lights go missing

Nearly all the streetlights installed along the 19-kilometre Accra-Tema Motorway have vanished just three years after their installation.

A recent investigation by the Daily Graphic revealed that most of the lights and poles, put up in 2021, are now missing, with the few still standing showing signs of damage.

The sudden disappearance has left officials scrambling for explanations. Despite several public bodies being involved in the project, none could account for the missing infrastructure, as the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, and the Ministry of Energy appear to be passing blame.

A source within the Ministry of Energy informed the Daily Graphic that the country’s street lighting system is plagued by ongoing maintenance issues, which are currently not being addressed due to multiple challenges.

The key issue, according to the source, is confusion among state agencies over ownership and responsibility for maintaining street lights. For the motorway lights, the Ministry of Energy oversaw their installation, but by law, local authorities are supposed to take over their management once operational, a process that remains unclear.

    Jurisdiction

The entire length of the motorway is under the control of multiple local authorities, which has further complicated the issue.

According to the source, Ghana Highway Authority officials have repeatedly informed the Ministry of Energy that the streetlights are considered part of the road infrastructure and therefore fall under the authority’s responsibility.

“There have been several arguments over who must be responsible for street lights over the years, and we need to come to an agreement on that as a nation,” the source said.

According to the Street Lighting in Ghana Policy Framework (2011), the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are responsible for the development, installation, maintenance, replacement, and operation of street lights within their respective jurisdictions.

The policy framework clarifies the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in ensuring effective street lighting across the country.

“Consequently, all street lighting constructed by the public agencies—central government, the MMDAs, road authorities, and the community—should be transferred to and owned by the local government authorities (MMDAs). Construction of community street lights shall be sanctioned by the MMDA,” it states.

In line with the Local Government (Departments of District Assemblies) (Commencement) Instrument, 2009 (Legislative Instrument 1961), jurisdictional and maintenance issues have complicated the situation.

Additionally, theft of road infrastructure, including street lights, has proven challenging to control on the motorway. According to the source, contractors faced persistent theft even while actively installing the lights, leading to the replacement of three transformers before the project could be completed.

    Situation

Currently, driving on the 19-kilometre Accra-Tema Motorway at night is a nightmare due to the absence of streetlights, leaving the road in complete darkness.

Even when two-thirds of the road was equipped with solar-powered streetlights three years ago, drivers still complained of inadequate visibility, especially on the outer lanes, as many of the lights were faulty.

Back in 2021, Professor Alex Dodoo, Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority, informed the Daily Graphic that the installed streetlights did not meet national standards.

Now, the stretch remains entirely unlit at night.

C/R: GWCL reports improved output, lower turbidity at Sekyere Hemang Plant

Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Central Region has announced ongoing efforts to ensure adequate water supply to Cape Coast, Elmina, and nearby communities.

In a statement, GWL noted that water production at the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant, which serves these areas, has significantly improved.

The plant is now recording an average turbidity level of 9,000 NTU, down from the previous 14,000 NTU, thanks to interventions led by the Central Regional Security Council under the leadership of Regional Minister Justina Marigold Assan.

“As a result, production at the plant has increased from 1.98 million gallons per day to 2.77 million gallons per day,” the statement said, assuring residents that every effort is being made to meet water demand.

GWL also acknowledged the role of the Regional Security Council in improving the raw water quality and pledged to keep the public informed of any changes that might affect supply.

They expressed gratitude for the council’s swift support and urged customers to use water responsibly, reiterating their commitment to delivering reliable water services.

  • Nduom goes live on Facebook today as 3rd phase of Bring Back GN Bank campaign begins

Nduom goes live on Facebook today as 3rd phase of Bring Back GN Bank campaign begins

Chairman of Groupe Nduom, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, is set to address Ghanaians on Facebook today as part of the ongoing campaign to reinstate GN Bank, dubbed the Bring Back GN Bank campaign.

The live broadcast will commence at 5:00 p.m. and can be viewed on Amansan Television (ATV) in Accra, Ocean 1 TV/Ahomka FM in Elmina, as well as across all GN media channels and social media platforms.

In his announcement on Facebook, Dr. Nduom indicated that this third phase of the #BringBackGNBank campaign will focus on media engagement, revealing additional facts and evidence supporting the restoration of the bank’s license, which was revoked.

The campaign initially launched in July and has since visited ten regions, including Upper East, Upper West, and Northern regions. It has effectively educated the public on the circumstances surrounding the revocation of GN Bank’s savings license.

There has been a growing call from citizens, including traditional leaders, religious figures, traders, politicians, educators, and health workers, for the reinstatement of what is often referred to as “the People’s Bank.”

Economists have pointed out that the abrupt closure of such a nationwide bank has exacerbated microeconomic challenges across the country. Investigations indicate that no other licensed national financial institution has effectively supported local economies in the same way GN Bank did.

Numerous small businesses have either shut down or reduced their operations significantly. Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, Chairman of Groupe Nduom, emphasized that the purpose of the Bring Back GN Bank campaign is to clarify the bank’s history and highlight its significant role in expanding banking access throughout the country, the challenges it faced, and the necessity of restoring its license.

He noted that efforts to engage the current government—particularly the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta—and the Bank of Ghana (BoG), as well as institutions like the House of Chiefs and various religious organisations, have not produced favourable outcomes. This lack of progress has prompted the need to publicly share the bank’s story.

On August 16, 2019, the BoG revoked the licences of 23 savings and loan companies, including GN Savings, which had only received its licence in January 2019 after GN Bank was reclassified as a universal bank.

Dr. Nduom expressed his desire to regain the universal banking status due to significant investments made in technology, expansion, and workforce development.

GN Bank has consistently stated that it is owed a considerable amount of money by the government and its agencies, which, if paid, could have helped recapitalize the bank and addressed both real and perceived challenges.

The company has submitted a demand letter to the Akufo-Addo Administration for over GHS7.5 billion, but the administration and its agencies have not responded, despite acknowledging receipt of the letter.

  • Alan Kyerematen vows to complete the Greater Kumasi Industrial City Project

Alan Kyerematen vows to complete the Greater Kumasi Industrial City Project

Leader and presidential candidate of the Movement for Change/Afrafranto Alliance, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has committed to finishing the Greater Kumasi Industrial City and Special Economic Zone in Ejisu if he wins the December 7 elections.

The Greater Kumasi Project, also referred to as the Greater Kumasi Industrial City and Special Economic Zone, aims to develop a significant industrial hub in the Kumasi area of Ghana.

This initiative is designed to enhance economic activities and promote industrial growth in the region, ultimately contributing to the national economy.

During an October 3, 2024, visit to the Palace of Ejisu Manhene, Nana Afrane Okese IV, Mr. Kyerematen highlighted the transformative potential of the project, promising that it would significantly boost Ghana’s industrial growth and economic prosperity.

“If elected as president, I will build the biggest projects that can turn the fortunes of the country,” Mr Kyerematen declared. He highlighted the importance of the Greater Kumasi Industrial City, stating,

“I want every Ghanaian to know that there is something big coming into the country—this project is a massive step towards industrialising our economy.”

The $2.5 billion initiative is expected to revolutionise the nation’s industrial sector and create vast employment opportunities.

Alan Kyerematen revealed that the Ejisu Manhene played a pivotal role in drafting the project, which demonstrates their shared vision for the region. “Nana Afrane Okese IV was part of the team that conceptualised this entire project,” he noted.

To underscore his commitment to the development of Asanteman and Ejisu, Alan Kyerematen disclosed, “I single-handedly secured $30 million in World Bank funding to get this project started – this is proof that I have Asanteman and Ejisu at heart.”

In addition to the World Bank funding, Mr Alan Kyerematen secured $100 million from the government of the Republic of Korea for the first phase of the project.

He pointed out that while the government has already initiated the Buankra Inland Port, “the port alone cannot move the industrialization agenda I have been championing. That is why the Greater Kumasi Industrial City is needed to truly accelerate our industrial progress.”

The suffering in Ghana not exclusive to any ethnic group; we are all suffering – Mahama

Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has underscored that the economic difficulties currently facing Ghana affect every ethnic group and are not confined to any particular community.

During his two-day campaign visit to the Northeast Region, he urged residents of Kulgona, particularly those in Nalerigu, to be cautious of the New Patriotic Party’s appealing yet unrealistic promises as the December 7 elections draw near.

In his speech, the former president recognized the pervasive nature of the economic crisis, emphasising that no ethnic community is spared from its effects.

He pointed out that the hardships experienced by Mamprusis are akin to those felt by the Ashantis and other groups across the nation, reinforcing the idea that struggle is a collective challenge.

Mr. Mahama condemned the NPP for what he called attempts to mislead voters with empty promises.

He called on constituents to stay alert and avoid being swayed by political slogans that do not tackle the pressing challenges in their communities.

By highlighting the shared nature of these economic struggles, Mr. Mahama seeks to promote solidarity among Ghanaians, urging them to focus on real solutions instead of mere campaign platitudes.

“Our brothers came with sweet promises, one district, one factory, one village, one dam, one million dollars per constituency per year, and so Ghanaians naturally decided that they would give them an opportunity, which they did.

Unfortunately, that opportunity, I think has been squandered because today Ghanaians are suffering, and the suffering does not know any ethnic groups. Mamprusis are suffering as much as Ashantis.”

“Ashantis are suffering as much as Ewes. Ewes are suffering as much as Fantis. Fantis are suffering as much as Dagaatis,” he stated.

#StopGalamseyNow protest: A bucket of contaminated waters takes center stage

Protesters at the ongoing #StopGalamseyNow demonstration in Accra are going to great lengths to illustrate the severe effects of illegal mining, particularly on the country’s water bodies.

From filling bottles with water from polluted rivers to offering this water—sometimes with bread—to politicians, a new symbol has emerged: a brown bucket.

This brown bucket, which gained attention on Day 2 of the 3-day protest, stands out for one key reason: it contains water collected from all 16 rivers across Ghana that have been visibly impacted by illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

In a symbolic move to reflect the typical dark brown or murky appearance of these rivers, the protesters deliberately chose a brown bucket for their demonstration.

With a plastered note of ’16 Rivers All In 1 Bucket Mixed With Mercury, Cyanide, and Lead,’ one of the protesters explained the details further:

“This is a bucket of all the 16 rivers that have been polluted, mixed with mercury, cyanide, and lead. We got samples from all the 16 rivers into one bucket. So, whatever you are seeing here is a mixture of all the 16 rivers.

“So, they’ve already mixed it with mercury; they’ve extracted the gold, and this is what is left of the river. This is sending a message to everyone, including the government officials, that this is the state of our river bodies—16 rivers all in one bucket.

So, we are sending a message that this is how bad our rivers have been polluted,” he said.

So far, the protests have been largely peaceful, with no incidences out of the ordinary reported.

The presence of the police is also very high as the protesters continue to drum home their message of #StopGalamsey while urging the government to release the arrested protesters from the Democracy Hub protests about a fortnight ago.

Video: Shatta Wale goes ‘gaga’ after shout outs from Ronaldo’s son

Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has reacted with excitement to a viral video showing Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., the son of football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, endorsing his latest album, “SAFA.”

The video, making the rounds on social media, features the young Ronaldo giving a shoutout to Shatta Wale while one of the tracks from the album plays in the background.

In response, Shatta Wale expressed his joy over the endorsement and shared his desire to meet the footballer’s son in person.

“Ah, is this true? Just seeing this. Gist me more. On my way to see my world’s best CR7’s son,” he said.

Ronaldo Jr.’s familiarity with Ghanaian music can be traced back to his connection with a Ghanaian barber in Saudi Arabia, who is the go-to stylist for many celebrities in the region.

Several social media videos suggest a close bond between Ronaldo Jr. and the Ghanaian barber.

  • Pay us our delayed allowances, other benefits – Magistrates, judges to govt

Pay us our delayed allowances, other benefits – Magistrates, judges to govt

President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges (AMJ), Justice Henry A. Kwofie, has expressed concern over the persistent delays in the payment of medical, fuel, and transfer grants to magistrates and judges, describing it as a barrier to efficient justice delivery.

He noted that the situation regarding delayed allowances and benefits for judges and magistrates has deteriorated significantly, going from bad to worse.

Mr Justice Kwofie, a Court of Appeal judge, said these at the ongoing AMJ annual conference held in Accra yesterday on the theme “A Financially Independent and Accountable Judiciary; The Key to Effective Justice Delivery.”

He said although the issue of delayed payment of allowances to magistrates and judges was discussed at the conference in 2023, the concern had not been addressed.

“The question we need to ask is whether having regard to the concerns and dissatisfaction expressed last year, there has been no improvement in the situation.

Needless to say, and I say this with some sadness, the situation has not only improved but has gone from bad to worse. Almost all allowances with the exception of quinquennial leave allowance are way behind schedule.”

He noted that although the year is now in its final quarter, fuel allowances for the second quarter remain unpaid, making it impossible to discuss the third and fourth quarter’s allowances.

The AMJ president expressed concern over judges having to cover the costs of servicing and maintaining their official vehicles out of pocket, only to face lengthy delays—sometimes up to a year—before being reimbursed.

Addressing the issue of security, Justice Kwofie highlighted the risks judges and magistrates face due to inadequate security measures at the courts.

“As for the security of judges and magistrates, especially in our courts, it is virtually non-existent. Ghana is probably the only country in Africa where anybody can enter any courtroom, including even the Supreme Court without going through a security check. “

He said in countries like Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, there was no way anybody can enter the court premises without having gone through appropriate security.

But in Ghana, the president of AMJ said the security of the courts had been taken for granted.

Unlike other public servants who could demonstrate, sometimes in the most uncompromising ways, to press home their demands, judges and magistrates could only complain about it.

“These issues relating to the welfare and security of judges cannot be taken for granted, unfortunately, unlike other public servants, who go on the street and shout from the rooftops and worse still withdraw their services. We can only complain and talk about it but we ask that these complaints need to be taken seriously,” he said.

6 staff of Winneba Trauma Hospital to be prosecuted over the death of abandoned patient

Six staff of the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, Central Region, have been implicated in a case involving the transfer of a patient in June, which ultimately led to her death.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) concluded an investigation into the incident, uncovering serious misconduct by hospital staff who failed to handle the transfer to Ojobi properly, resulting in the patient being abandoned and subsequently dying.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) announced that the matter has been referred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General’s Department for further inquiry and action.

“The Ministry is of the view that in light of the gravity of the issue captured in the report, involving the loss of life, further investigations should be carried out by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

As a result, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has sought the Attorney General’s assistance to investigate the matter and determine the liability of the staff involved, with further actions to be taken as necessary.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards in healthcare and ensuring that such a tragic incident is never repeated.

In the meantime, the Ghana Health Service will impose sanctions on the implicated staff through internal disciplinary measures.

This follows a June 2024 incident in which a patient admitted to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba was discharged and later abandoned in a bush.

Reports suggest that an ambulance from the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba was used to transport and abandon an elderly woman recovering from leg injuries after an accident, near a roadside by a bush.

Photos and videos online showed her lying with casts on both legs and a wheelchair nearby. A passerby provided a cloth when she appeared cold.

The woman, suspected of having dementia, was admitted to the hospital following the accident. She regained consciousness, but could only mention Gomoa Ojobi as her home, leaving hospital staff unable to locate her relatives.

When no family members came forward and her behaviour, including nighttime screaming and violence, became disruptive, hospital staff allegedly decided to search for her relatives.

A Ghana Health Service investigation revealed she was admitted on May 29, 2024, and discharged on June 13, 2024. Contrary to her claim, she was not a native of Gomoa Ojobi, where community members found her injured and brought her to the hospital initially.

Ghana Aids Commission raises alarm over lack of funds in fight against HIV/AIDS

Ghana Aids Commission has raised serious concerns about the lack of sufficient funding to tackle HIV/AIDS across the country.

Speaking to JoyNews on Thursday, October 3, the Commission’s Director General, Kyeremeh Atuahene, outlined the financial difficulties they face, stressing that these constraints are obstructing key efforts to prevent the spread of the virus, provide treatment, and support those living with HIV/AIDS.

Atuahene emphasised that the shortage of resources is a major obstacle to the Commission’s objectives, which include reducing new HIV infections and enhancing the lives of affected individuals.

Due to the funding gap, access to critical services like testing, counselling, and antiretroviral treatment has become increasingly limited, hampering the fight against the disease.

As a consequence, numerous individuals remain unaware of their HIV status, further fuelling the spread of the virus.

The Commission stressed the critical need for heightened awareness, particularly within vulnerable groups, to curb new infections and encourage those living with HIV to access treatment.

Beyond the urgent need for financial assistance, the Commission called for stronger partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and international organisations to gather resources and bolster efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

“What we do not have is the necessary resources to help us scale the services to ensure that everybody who needs prevention, treatment, and care services receives them, so that we will be able to reduce new infections and AIDS-related deaths and increase the uptake of HIV prevention and treatment services,” he said.

  • Galamsey: Your strike won’t change anything – Kwadaso MP tells Organised Labour

Galamsey: Your strike won’t change anything – Kwadaso MP tells Organised Labour

Deputy Minister for Education, Prof. Kingsley Nyarko, has urged Organised Labour to reconsider its decision to launch a nationwide strike over illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

Speaking at the Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony in Kumasi on Thursday, October 3, he addressed concerns regarding the upcoming industrial action.

Prof. Nyarko appealed to Organised Labour to seek alternative solutions, arguing that a strike may not be the best approach to tackle the galamsey issue.

He highlighted the importance of ongoing discussions and collaboration between all involved parties to find a sustainable solution to the environmental damage caused by illegal mining.

In his view, dialogue and cooperation would prove more productive than disrupting national work output.

The strike, set for October 10, was called by Organised Labour in response to the government’s failure to declare a state of emergency over the galamsey crisis.

Labour groups have raised concerns about the severe environmental damage caused by illegal mining, particularly to water sources and farmlands, and are demanding swift action.

Prof. Nyarko, who also represents Kwadaso in Parliament, acknowledged the legitimacy of Organised Labour’s concerns but insisted that striking would not necessarily lead to the desired changes.

He called for a unified effort between the government, labour unions, and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategy to combat illegal mining and address its devastating impact.

“For me, it’s more about dialogue, because the government and individuals are concerned about the activities of galamsey. The government has put in place interventions to deal with this issue.”

“It demands collective efforts not only from the government but from other civil society, and the media should be involved as well, chiefs, traditional leaders, the clergy, and everybody else must come on board for us to deal with it.”

“I will plead with Organised Labour that instead of embarking on a strike we don’t know when it will end, the best way is to keep engaging the authorities for us to come to a meaningful, progressive, and productive solution to this particular problem. Industrial action will only lead to a reduction in productivity that will affect our revenue.”

  • ‘It was Fella – Sister Derby recounts journey of her relationship, breakup with Medikal

‘It was Fella – Sister Derby recounts journey of her relationship, breakup with Medikal

Ghanaian singer and model Sister Derby recently discussed her former relationship with rapper Medikal, sharing insights into the factors that contributed to their split and how she managed the aftermath.

In a revealing interview with Arnold Mensah Elavanyo on Vibe in 5, she openly addressed the influence of actress Fella Makafui on the deterioration of their relationship, detailing the emotional impact of Fella’s behaviour on her.

Sister Derby expressed that she felt a sense of disrespect from Fella Makafui during her time with Medikal.

“She was mocking me,” Sister Derby recalled, explaining how Fella would frequently post insinuating comments on social media while engaging in an affair with Medikal.

Despite the pain, Derby admitted that she chose not to retaliate or publicly confront Fella.

“I didn’t really care about their relationship, but for him, I wished him well. And of course, it was painful because they were rubbing it in my face.

“Even those times, I never said anything to her or dissed her. I accepted it,” she said.

When it came to confronting Medikal about the rumours surrounding his involvement with Fella, Derby said he continually denied any wrongdoing.

However, as the lies became harder to ignore, the relationship eventually crumbled. Fella Makafui’s presence, once a hidden affair, became public, and she openly pursued Medikal after the breakup.

Years later, following Medikal’s marriage to Fella, he reached out to Sister Derby, asking her to perform at one of his concerts.

Initially, Derby refused, citing her discomfort about being around Fella Makafui, especially given their shared history.

“I didn’t want to be in the same space as her,” she confessed.

Nevertheless, Medikal assured her that Fella would not be involved, as they were said to be in the midst of divorce proceedings during that period.

Looking back, Sister Derby contemplated Medikal’s personality, recognising one specific quality in him that she respected.

“He was incredibly generous,” she said, noting that his generosity was something she appreciated about him even after their relationship ended.
