Ghanaian artist Samuel Adu Frimpong, widely known as Medikal, has ignited discussions on social media with a recent statement he made.
In a now-deleted post, the rapper requested that his loved ones and supporters refrain from mourning his passing when he dies. He also expressed a wish for there to be no funeral held in his honour.
Medikal stressed that instead of grieving, his family and friends should focus on caring for his daughter, Island, and his new wife.
“When I die, make nobody cry. I’ve already lived life to the fullest! I don’t want any funerals,” he stated.
While it’s unclear what prompted his message, Medikal specified that 50 percent of his property should go to his new wife and child.
“My close ones should make sure Island is good, my mom is good, and my new wife and kid should get 50 percent of whatever I own,” he added.
In the meantime, Medikalhas suggested that he is in a new relationship.
While he didn’t share many specifics, he confirmed that the recent speculation regarding his involvement with singer Eazzy is accurate.
Ghana has been reported as the fourth highest debtor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)in Africa, according to the Fund’s 2024 Quarterly Financial Statement.
The nation owes a total of 2.275 billion Special Drawing Rights (SDR), which translates to approximately $3.068 billion.
Egypt holds the top position in Africa, with a staggering debt of SDR 10.050 billion owed to the IMF.
Angola and Kenya follow in second and third places, with debts of SDR 2.989 billion and SDR 2.566 billion, respectively.
Notably, Nigeria and Morocco have fallen out of the top ten debtors, making room for Cameroon and Ethiopia to enter the list.
While IMF loans can offer temporary financial assistance to member countries, they can also lead to significant debt challenges.
Increased borrowing from the IMF contributes to the overall debt load of a country, necessitating careful fiscal oversight.
Additionally, these loans typically come with specific conditions, which can further restrict the government’s financial flexibility.
President of Ghana Athletics, Bawah Fuseini, has called on the government to restore the El Wak Sports Stadium, which has fallen into a state of neglect.
Once a prime venue for sports and athletic events, the stadium’s worsening condition has made it unfit to host key competitions such as the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games.
During the launch of the 2024 SESSA Games, Fuseini voiced his frustration that the event had to be moved to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, putting extra pressure on its high-quality athletic facilities.
“We ask ourselves, why aren’t we hosting this at El Wak? It’s because of the track’s condition.
“We’re appealing to the government, through our board chairman and Acting Director General, Seth Panwun Boyoyo, to renovate El Wak and other facilities nationwide.
“This will alleviate pressure on the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, reserving its world-standard tracks for international competitions while using El Wak and other stadia for domestic purposes,” he said.
Fuseini further emphasised the importance of renovating El Wak and other sports facilities to support the development of athletics and other sports disciplines across the country.
“We appeal to the Ministry and government to refurbish El Wak’s tracks,a hub for athletics and SESSA among security services.
“Renovating it will significantly boost athletics and sports development nationwide, as SESSA encompasses various disciplines beyond athletics,” he continued.
The call for renovations comes at a critical time when Ghana’s athletic infrastructure is in need of upgrades to meet international standards and to provide athletes with adequate facilities for training and competition.
National Communications Director for the Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Mohammed Naziru Seidu, confidently declared that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will fail to secure any votes from Zongo communities in the upcoming elections.
He emphasised that NDC’s candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama, is poised to dominate in all Zongo areas.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Seidu made a bold statement, offering to have his head cut off if Dr. Bawumia wins even a single Zongo community.
Despite being told that such rhetoric was extreme, he stood by his claim, insisting that his head be taken if the Vice President prevails in any Zongo locality.
“But I am telling you before God and man that if Bawumia is able to secure victory in one single Zongo community in Ghana, cut off my head. I repeat, if Bawumia is able to secure victory in one Zongo community in Ghana, cut off my head,” he declared.
He posited that it was obvious that Mahama had been ordained by God to be elected as the next president of Ghana, and his victory would be massive.
He noted that prophets who had earlier prophesied against Mahama’s election win have now come up with a new prophecy, predicting his election as the next president.
Alhaji Mohammed Naziru Seidu lamented that the ruling government, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo with support from his vice president, has destroyed not only the country’s economy but all state institutions, religion, and our environment with galamsey.
“The President Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administrations have not only destroyed our economy.
“They have also destroyed our country with galamsey, and they have destroyed this country through religion. They want to divide this country through religion by making divisive religious comments.
He added, “I know the work we have done and what we are still doing. We know the promises and focus of the Zongo communities.
“We know the challenges they are going through. We know what they have told us, and we know we will convince them to vote for former President John Dramani Mahama. That is why I have said that if Bawumia secures victory in one Zongo community, cut off my head.”
A young unidentified man and a resident of Hohoe in the Volta Region has received ten strokes of cane for destroying campaign posters of John-Peter Amewu, Hohoe Constituency New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate.
Jonas-Kwofi Worlanyo, Vice Chairman, Gbi-Bla House of Justice, a voluntary group for the parliamentary candidate,, told GNA that they had recorded a high increase in the destruction of posters of the candidate.
In Ghana, it is an electoral offence to destroy, remove, or disfigure campaign materials of other candidates or parties, which is unlawful and frowned upon by the electoral code.
These offences are punishable by law either through a fine, a prison term, or, to some extent, both.
Deputy Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu-Bempah, has accused Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, of working against the presidential ambitions of John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, for personal political gain.
Speaking during an interview on Onua TV on October 2, 2024, Owusu-Bempah alleged that Ablakwa is quietly manoeuvring to position himself as a future leader within the NDC by subtly hoping for Mahama’s defeat in the upcoming election.
He pointed to Ablakwa’s public actions and statements, claiming they demonstrate a focus on advancing his own political career rather than fully backing Mahama’s campaign.
Owusu-Bempah urged the public to examine Ablakwa’s previous comments, asserting that the MP has consistently refrained from expressing clear support or praise for Mahama.
According to Owusu-Bempah, this apparent lack of endorsement suggests Ablakwa may have a hidden agenda aimed at his own future leadership aspirations within the party.
“Okudzeto Ablakwa is not supporting John Mahama. He is building his own political career for John Mahama to lose so that he can take over.
“Okudzeto Ablakwa doesn’t support John Mahama, and the inner circles within theNDC know about that.Have you heard of him promoting John Mahama before?
Go back and check the archives. Check his statements in the public domain. If he has praised Mahama before, I will stop politics. Go and check the archives,” he said.

The accident occurred while they were returning from a campaign tour in the Asante Akim South Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
Kwakwa was part of a convoy that included NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, and other party members, though they were travelling in separate vehicles.
According to George Opoku Amponsah, Chairman Wontumi’s aide, the crash took place near the Bomfa junction when Kwakwa’s vehicle attempted to overtake an articulated truck.
The risky manoeuvre resulted in the accident, leaving Kwakwa and his passengers injured.
The injured trio were promptly taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.
After receiving medical care, they were discharged, with all three reportedly in stable condition and on the path to recovery.

In a live TikTok video, the “Gbalagazaa” hitmaker disclosed how some ill-fated decisions in his prime led to his loss of wealth.
“I lost everything; I was living in a single room. I know some people will say why didn’t I save; yes, I saved, but there is a way life will hit you, and no matter who you are, you can lose everything,” Screwfaze, who currently resides abroad, said.
Screwfaze confessed that his depression was compounded by his family’s rejection, including his wife’s decision to keep him away from their kids.
“My family members abandoned me; I was depressed, and even my wife didn’t want anything to do with me, she even prevented me from my children because I made some wrong decisions and refused to listen to advice,” he added.
With a prolific career spanning hundreds of songs, Scewfaze has had theprivilege of collaborating with over two dozen Ghanaian musicians, including esteemed artists like Castro, Shiloh, Mz Bell, and KK Fosu.
Speaking on TV3, she stressed the significance of ensuring both partners are satisfied in a marriage, pointing out that some men focus only on penetration and overlook their wives’ desires.
“If your husband is not able to please you in bed, there are other things he can do to your body that can satisfy you. It is not just penetration.
“There are men who are just so focused on penetration that they just want to bang. He will hit you like a horse rider. And by the time he’s done, the woman would be like, ‘Ah, what was that?” she said.
Referencing the Bible, particularly the book of Peter, Dr. Owusu-Prempeh highlighted that sex should be a mutual experience.
She called on men to consider their wives’ happiness, not just their own.
“Sex is supposed to be mutual. If you truly love the woman, you must be expecting her happinessand her joy. Please, the woman. It is not about you only,” she added.

Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation’s (NIDO) Ghana Chapter took the festivities to theNsawam Medium Security Prisonin Accra, Ghana, bringing joy to Nigerian inmates on October 1, 2024, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations.
A gathering of notable Nigerians in Ghana attended the event, including High Chief Calistus, Pastor Prince Olayemi (President of NIDO Ghana), Rev. Ebenezer, Dr. Tunji Osho, and Mr. Mayor Igwe, among others.
The organisation generously provided essential supplies to both male and female prisoners, such as bags of rice, toiletries, bottled water and beverages, cartons of noodles, and sanitary products. Additionally, cash donations were also contributed.
The visit commenced with a guided tour of the male prison, where Assistant Regional Commander Patrick Thomas Seidu welcomed the delegation.
He emphasised the strong ties between Nigeria and Ghana, noting that the cooperation and respect shown by Nigerian inmates have fostered a harmonious environment within the facility.
“We have lived at peace with the Nigerian inmates. We treat them with dignity as their Ghanaian counterparts, as they are equal before the law,” the commander stated.
Following Mr. Seidu’s remarks, Austin, an inmate who has spent 24 years in prison, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian community in Ghana for remembering them in their struggles.
He shared that some inmates face financial difficulties, especially during critical health crises, which often lead to tragic outcomes. Despite these hardships, Austin remains hopeful that his freedom, and that of others, will come in due time.
NIDO President, Pastor Prince Olayemi, said the purpose of the visit was to connect with the inmates at the Prison. He said they were there to offer them care, support, and love, as well as remind them that there is hope for a better future despite their current situation.
“Today, as members of the diaspora, we have gathered to come to this place to commemorate with them. We know that not everybody in prison are prisoners. We just want them to have a feel that today is October 1st, which is our Independence Day,” he said.
“We have over 255 Nigerian inmates inNsawam prison today. It’s sad, but today, we have made sure we feed all of them and tell them there’s a greater tomorrow.”
He further spoke about the strides the association has made in securing the release of some prisoners.
“We are doing tremendous work. Some of them are in prison now, their jail term has lapsed. Some of them don’t even have hope of how to come out of prison. Some of them have the feeling that at this stage, they cannot go back to society.
So we have a plan to reintegrate them into society through the head of the NAPTIP, and when we pick them up from here, vehicles convey them. We give them food, shelter, all that,” he said.
“It takes some days, weeks to put them back to life. Then, we send them to NAPTIP Nigeria where they reintegrate them before they put them back into society.
We know that at least, with the kind of experience they shared in the past, they’ve learned from their mistakes, and we know that the little we’ve been doing, over thousands of Nigerian citizens in Diaspora have been rescued, and we are continuing this cause.”
High Chief Calistus, in his speech, urged the inmates to be hopeful and maintain a high spirit.
He encouraged them to adhere to the laws of Ghana while assuring them that their plea would be sent to President Bola Tinubu for steps to be taken to address the situation.
Ghanaian footballer David Oduro has recently shared his experiences of training with both the youth and senior squads of the renowned Spanish club, FC Barcelona.
After joining the team from Accra Lions in the Ghana Premier League during the summer transfer window, Oduro initially expected to train solely with the youth side.
However, he had the opportunity to work with the first team, and he has been documenting his journey on TikTok alongside fellow Ghanaian footballers.
Oduro remarked that training with Barcelona’s first team presents a greater challenge compared to the B team. He explained that the atmosphere with Barcelona B is intense, as many players strive to make a strong impression.
“Training with the first team is good because there is no pressure. The youth can press you, and I go in hard on them. What I meant is that training with the first team and second team are different,” he said.
Oduro also opened up about meeting some of Barcelona’s big stars, including the hugely talented Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde.
He describes the feeling of meeting and training alongside players he watched on television as surreal and unbelievable.
“Yamal has a beautiful skin colour. I was like, These are the guys I have been watching on TV and now playing with them,” he said.
Lionel Messi, the forward for Inter Miami, played a crucial role in securing the club’s first-ever MLS Supporters’ Shield with two goals in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew.
Messi opened the scoring early with a close-range strike and extended the lead just before halftime with an exquisite free-kick.
Columbus Crew’s Diego Rossi responded by scoring to reduce the deficit, but Inter Miami quickly regained their two-goal advantage with a goal from Luis Suarez, a former Liverpool forward.
Although Cucho Hernandez converted a penalty for the Crew, Miami successfully maintained their lead.
This win guarantees that Inter Miami will finish at the top of the table, marking their first Supporters’ Shield triumph since their establishment in 2020.
With this latest accolade, Messi adds the 46th trophy to his illustrious collection, which includes titles from both club and international competitions.
By securing the top position, Miami has also ensured home-field advantage for the upcoming playoff matches.
“The first objective has been achieved, and now we have to think about what’s next,” said Messi.
“The first round is three games, but then it’s one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home.”
Miami needs two wins from their final two league matches to beat the MLS record for most points in a regular season, which currently stands at the 73 amassed by the New England Revolution in 2021.
A tragic incident in north-central Nigeria has led to fears of multiple casualties following the capsizing of a boat carrying over 300 passengers on the River Niger.
The disaster occurred on Tuesday night, according to Abdullahi Baba Arah, head of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
Local council chairman Abdullahi Muregi reported that approximately 60 bodies have been recovered from the site of the accident, while Arah confirmed that around 150 individuals have been successfully rescued.
Many of those on board were women and children, travelling to participate in celebrations for the Muslim holiday of Mawlid.
Mr Arah praised the “prompt response” from community volunteers, who have been attempting to rescue the passengers with “brave” local divers.
The ill-fated boat was en route from a locality known as Mundi, with many passengers travelling to Gbajibo for Mawlid, which celebrates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.
While Mr. Arah did not specify the reason behind the boat’s capsizing, such incidents are unfortunately frequent on the River Niger, the third-longest river in Africa.
This is especially true during the rainy season, when water levels rise significantly.
The boats navigating this river are often old and heavily loaded, and obstacles like tree branches floating in the water can create hazardous conditions.
In a similar incident in September of the previous year, at least 24 individuals lost their lives when a boat capsized in the same vicinity, while carrying over 50 passengerswho were traveling to work on their farms.

Ghanaian actress and media personalityBenedicta Gafah has firmly denied ongoing speculations that she has had cosmetic surgery, asserting that her figure is entirely natural.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, Gafah addressed the rumours, stating that despite her curvy physique, she has never resorted to any surgical procedures.
“My body is 100% natural. Yes, it is,” she said. “I have even lost more weight now, yet it is still protruding.”
The actress acknowledged that while she has no issue with individuals who opt for cosmetic procedures to enhance their appearance, she personally feels she is too young for such interventions.
“I am okay with my body. I don’t have a problem with people who do surgery to look good, but in my case, no.”
Though she is open to considering enhancement surgery in the future, undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)is not on her list.
“Should there be a reason to do an enhancement surgery? I will, but for now, no. I will never do a BBL because I am naturally endowed.”
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change and a presidential candidate, to prioritise a campaign centred on policies rather than personal attacks ahead of the December 7 elections.
The Asantehene shared this counsel during Kyerematen’s visit to the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, October 2, where he sought the backing of the Ashanti Region.
Otumfuo emphasised the need for a campaign focused on policies that would improve the lives of Ghanaians, cautioning against the use of insults and divisive rhetoric.

Additionally,Kyerematen introduced hisrunning mate to the Asantehene, seeking the blessing and backing of the region’s traditional leadership as he prepares for the election.
A three-day demonstration is scheduled to kick off today,Thursday, October 3, in Accra, as activists push for the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub members who were detained during a recent protest against illegal mining.
Set to last until October 5, the protest aims to raise awareness of the environmental devastation caused by galamsey, or illegal mining.
The march will begin at Legon Okponglo and make its way to the Black Star Square, following a police-approved route.
The procession will pass through several notable locations, including the Legon Stadium, Okponglo Traffic Light, Shiashie, Shangri-La, and Airport Traffic Light, before reaching key destinations such as the National Service Secretariat, Electoral Commission Office, Parliament House, and concluding at Independence Square.
The protest, organised under the slogans “Free the Citizens” and “Say No to Galamsey,” has gained significant traction on social media, with a large turnout anticipated.
Participants aim to spotlight both the detention of their fellow demonstrators and the ongoing struggle against illegal mining, which is causing severe environmental damage in Ghana.
In response, theGhana Police Servicehas cautioned that they will intervene and disperse the protest if there is any indication that it might disrupt public order or pose a threat to peace.
Government’s spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has expressed optimism about engaging withorganised labourahead of their planned strike on October 10, 2024.
The strike is intended to push the government into taking strong measures against the illegal mining activities (galamsey) that are polluting water bodies nationwide.
In an appearance on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, October 2, Dr. Boakye-Danquah conveyed confidence that the industrial action could be prevented through timely dialogue and intervention from the government.
He stated that efforts are underway to address the concerns raised by labour groups, and he remains hopeful that a solution will be found before the strike commences.
“I am confident that organised labour will hear from the government before the 10th of October,” Dr Boakye-Danquah said.
“I’m sure the strike will not need to happen, especially when the government is preparing to give some timing, some responses to their concerns. This is a very difficult time, and we all feel the pressure.”
He explained that the government’s response to the ongoing galamsey problem is a pressing issue affecting all Ghanaians, and acknowledged the gravity of the situation.
“The choice of addressing galamsey affects every single Ghanaian. We are all under pressure to deal with this menace,” he said.
When asked to clarify why the timing is so challenging for the government, Dr Boakye-Danquah pointed out that managing the expectations of organised labour during periods of strikes or demonstrations adds significant pressure on the government.
“These are difficult times for the government, and clearly, labour is asking for very decisive decisions to be made within the shortest possible time,” he explained.
Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah emphasised that the government remains firmly against illegal mining, recalling President Nana Akufo-Addo’s commitment to risking his presidency in the fight against galamsey.
He pointed out that the president had made it clear in the past that combating the menace was a priority.
Regarding the demands of organised labour, Dr. Boakye-Danquah explained that they are calling for more decisive government action, including potential legal reforms and the possible declaration of a state of emergency in regions heavily impacted by illegal mining activities.
“I looked at the letter thatorganised labourwrote in September, and one of the things they asked for was a major state of emergency to be declared and also asked for a review of the provisions in LI 240,” he said.
The spokesperson assured the public that the government is working diligently to meet these demands and will reach out to organised labour soon with a response.
“I am positive the government will reach out to them soon,” Dr. Boakye-Danquah affirmed, concluding his remarks with optimism that the issue could be resolved before the October 10 deadline.
National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kate Gyamfuah, has dismissed a recent prophecy by Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, founder of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, regarding the 2024 presidential election.
She claimed that Rev. Owusu-Bempah’s declaration, which identified John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, as the divinely chosen winner of the election, was driven by personal anger rather than genuine divine revelation. Gyamfuah believes the prophecy did not come from God.
“I know him; I know the pain, the prayers, and the fasting he has taken us through. He has worked a lot for the NPP, so he is not happy with what happened, as well as some people going on radio to attack him.
So, I firmly believe that it was anger; it was an anger-induced prophecy and not a prophecy from within him or having been told by God.
I won’t disrespect him, but that is what my soul tells me,” she stated during an interview on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
Rev. Owusu-Bempah, who used to be a staunch supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), gave his prophecy during Mahama’s fellowship with the clergy, which was held on October 1, 2024, at DE ICON Event Centre, East Legon.
“When the prayer was going on, this is what the Lord has told me. Because of the good heart of this man, the Lord has entrusted the country in his hands again. Nothing can stop it,” he stated.
Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, the flagbearer and founder of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has declared his intent to remove President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from his Nima residence if he wins the presidency.
In an interview on Kasapa FM’s Ghana Kasa, Kyiri Abosom claimed that the land on which the president’s current home stands was wrongfully seized by the president’s father during his tenure as ceremonial president in the 1970s.
“You have been seeing Akufo-Addo; he lives very close by. Does he have any vision? If he did, he would not still be living here. Why won’t he be living in his mansion but still living in his father’s house? I will evict him from this area if I become president.
According to the GUM leader, the land on which the president resides was formerly a property of the Nima Police.
However, after becoming Ghana’s ceremonial president, Akufo-Addo’s father took ownership of it and erected the building in which the president resides now.
Rev. Andrews intends to evict the president, seize the land, and extend the Nima Police Station.
“That land belonged to the Nima Police Station before his father [the ceremonial president] took it and built on it. Ask Akufo-Addo; he will tell you that initially, his father was not staying there.
He took that land when he became the ceremonial president. We will take that land back and expand the Nima Police Station. I have the old pictures of what the place used to look like.”
He added that as president, he will not resettle Akufo-Addo, who will then be an ex-president when he evicts him from Nima.
“Why should we get him another place to stay? Has he not made any properties in his life? We have paid you for serving us; why should he accommodate you again when you leave office?
Has the state given any teacher who has taught for years accommodation after retiring? Has the nurse been given accommodation? The president must be able to build with the money he’s paid. I will scrap ex-gratia when I become president,”Osofo Kyiri Abosomstated.
Aliou Cissehas been dismissed as Senegal’s head coach after leading the Teranga Lions for nearly a decade.
During his nine and a half years at the helm, the 48-year-old led the team to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) victory, clinching the 2021 title in February 2022.
Although his contract expired in August, Cisse continued to oversee Senegal’s campaign, including their 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso and a 1-0 win against Burundi in the 2025 Afcon qualifiers last month.
Despite the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) seeking to renew his contract, the country’s new government, led by Bassirou Diomaye Faye, opted to part ways with Cisse just over a week before the next set of qualifiers.
“The FSF would like to thank Aliou Cisse for his good collaboration and his brilliant results at the head of various national selections and wishes him every success for the future,” a statement said.
Despite occasional friction between the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) and the government, which finances the national coach’s salary, the timing of this latest development has come as a surprise.
Aliou Cissé, who had already scheduled a press conference for Friday to reveal his squad for the upcoming double-header against Malawi, is at the center of attention.
Cissé, a former player with 35 caps for Senegal, has been at the helm since March 2015. His tenure has been instrumental in keeping the Teranga Lions at the top of Africa’s football rankings for over four years.
Under his guidance, Senegal claimed their first Africa Cup of Nations title in a dramatic penalty shootout against Egypt in Cameroon. This victory came after narrowly missing out in 2019, where they finished as runners-up.
However, their attempt to defend the title earlier this year fell short when they were knocked out in the round of 16 by Ivory Coast, who went on to win the tournament after a tense penalty shootout.
Cissé also led Senegal to two FIFA World Cup appearances, in 2018 and 2022. They exited in the group stage in 2018 and reached the round of 16 in 2022, but Morocco overtook them as Africa’s highest-ranked team by the end of last year.
Currently, Senegal is placed second in their World Cup qualifying group, trailing group leaders Sudan by two points. With four matches played, the next round of qualifiers is scheduled for March 2024.
The FSF’s statement said that Khady Diene Gaye, Senegal’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, had not approved a one-year contract extension for Cisse in a letter it received on Monday.
It said the reasons behind the decision were the “failure to achieve the objectives assigned in November”2022″—namely reaching the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup and winning the 2023 Afcon title—the “regression” in the world rankings and “the risk of disaffection between our national team and the Senegalese in general”.
The FSF is yet to announce an interim coaching team for the upcoming 2025 Afcon qualifiers against Malawi.
Cisse was part of Senegal’s first golden generation during his playing career, which included spells at Sedan, Paris St-Germain, Birmingham City and Portsmouth.
He captained the national side at the 2002 World Cup as they shocked holders France en route to reaching the quarter-finals on their first appearance at the tournament.
Earlier that year, he had missed the decisive penalty in the shootout at the end of the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations final against Cameroon, while in September 2002 he experienced personal tragedy in the Joola ferry disaster.
Eleven family members, including his sister, died when the ship, often labelled ‘Africa’s Titanic’, sank off the coast of The Gambia.
He told BBC Sport Africa in 2022 that he still feels the effects of the tragedy, which he says he could easily have been part of.
“I can’t even count how many times I took the ferry,” he said.
“Every time I came back home, I travelled on the Joola. I could have easily been on the boat too, so I was lucky.”
His coaching career started when he joined the FSF in 2011 and he first worked with Senegal’s Under-23 team, including at the 2012 Olympics, before taking charge of the Teranga Lions following the departure of Alain Giresse.
A seasonedChampions Leaguereferee has reportedly been suspended following allegations of issuing a death threat to a player.
Italian outlet Corriere della Sera reported that referee Fabio Maresca was accused of threatening Khaled Al Murshed during a Kuwait Premier League match between Al Kuwait and Al Arabi last week.
Al Murshed has claimed Maresca said, “See you next time, I’ll kill you,” though another player reportedly believes the referee said: “See you next time.”
The official, who has been involved in European football matches for six years, is said to have insisted it was just a joke,, but a punishment has now come his way.
Due to the allegations, Maresca is reportedly facing a one-month suspension from officiating in Italy. The 43-year-old referee was also pulled from his role as the fourth official in Tuesday’s Champions League clash between PSV and Sporting CP.
Despite his lengthy experience in Italian football since 2011, Maresca won’t face any disciplinary action in Kuwait, as the incident was deemed part of “on-field diplomacy.”
A former Juventus goalkeeper believesDavid de Gea is “struggling” at his new club, Fiorentina, after spending over a year away from first-team action.
The Spanish shot-stopper parted ways with Manchester United in the summer of 2023, bringing an end to his 12-year stint at Old Trafford.
After 14 months without a club, the 33-year-old joined Fiorentina this summer, but his return to football has been challenging. Now, former Genoa goalkeeper Rubinho has shared his thoughts on de Gea’s early performances with La Viola.
Rubinho told Radio Firenze Viola after a 0-0 draw with Empoli: “De Gea is still suffering from having been out for more than a year. But he has already helped Fiorentina a lot in these first games.
I think he can only grow further and show everyone the qualities he has. He is a top goalkeeper, and seeing him defend Fiorentina’s goal reminds me of when there were the likes of [Francesco] Toldo and [Sebastien] Frey.”

David de Gea has featured in five matches across all competitions this season, managing to secure one clean sheet so far.
Despite his involvement, teammate Pietro Terracciano has also had game time in goal for Raffaele Palladino’s squad, with the coach indicating that the competition for the starting goalkeeper position remains wide open.
He said in September: “There isn’t a hierarchy right now. I wanted to see De Gea and Terracciano to understand. I am happy with both. David hadn’t played for a year, so I preferred Terracciano. We’ll evaluate a few things in the coming days.”
After a lengthy absence from top-tier football,De Gea may be experiencing some rustiness. He will be aiming to secure a starting spot for Fiorentina when they face The New Saints in their Europa Conference League opener on Thursday evening.
If he doesn’t feature in that match, the former Manchester United goalkeeper could see action against AC Milan in their Serie A clash on Sunday night.
Jenni Hermoso isset to be featured in an upcoming Netflix documentary alongside other Spanish players, highlighting the controversy surrounding Luis Rubiales and Jorge Vilda.
Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup triumph, where they defeated England 1-0 in the final, should have centred on the team’s success.
Instead, attention shifted to Rubiales, the Spanish Football Federation’s president at the time, who faced backlash after kissing Hermoso during the post-match celebrations.
FIFA later banned Rubiales, and Hermoso has testified in court that the kiss was non-consensual. Rubiales is now facing trial on charges of sexual assault and coercion.
That was not the first controversy that surrounded the Spanish federation.

A year before the World Cup began, 15 national team players (‘Las 15’) made themselves unavailable for selection “until situations that affect our emotional and personal state, our performance, and, consequently, the results of the selection and that could lead to undesirable injuries are reversed.”
Following Spain’s World Cup victory, reports of controlling behaviour by head coach Jorge Vilda surfaced in the Spanish media. Despite the controversy, Vilda remained in his position until after Spain’s World Cup win.
Now, several Spanish players are set to appear in a Netflix documentary chronicling the turbulent year, from the ‘Las 15’ protest to their World Cup triumph.
The documentary, titled #SeAcabo: Diario de las campeonas (translated as #It’sOver: A Champion’s Diary), sheds light on their journey.
Netflix Spain shared images of players likeJenni Hermoso,Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati, and Irene Paredes on X when unveiling the documentary.
Frenkie de Jong made his long-awaited comeback for Barcelona on Tuesday, after being out of action for nearly five months due to an ankle injury.
The Dutch midfielder entered the game in the 75th minute, replacing Lamine Yamal during Barcelona’s 5-0 Champions League victory over Young Boys.
De Jong initially sustained the ankle injury in April during a Spanish league Clasico against Real Madrid, which also caused him to miss the European Championship.
His extended absence sparked criticism in local media, with some questioning the length of his recovery and his salary. De Jong admitted that the media scrutiny, combined with his time away from the game, had been challenging.
“I am really happy with the win and, personally, to be back playing,” De Jong said after the game. “The fans gave me a good reception and I’m grateful for that because you never know how you’ll be received. I didn’t expect it. I’m happy with the way I was welcomed back.
“The team is in good form and has been since the start of the season. We are playing well. We have to keep going now, keep improving and see where it takes us.” When asked how he saw himself fitting into manager Hansi Flick’s team — an whether he’d be open to a role from the substitutes’ bench — the Netherlands international said he’d play whenever and wherever he was asked.
“It depends on the coach. He picks the team and who plays and I’m going to give everything I can,” De Jong said. “It’s always a tough time when you’re injured. It’s been a hard process and there have been some low moments during it.”
Barcelona had opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 loss at Monaco.
Also Tuesday, forward Ansu Fati made his second appearance of the season after replacing Pedri in the 63rd minute. Fati had played a few minutes in Barcelona’s match at Monaco last month.
“It’s a simple reason,” Flick said about the introduction for Fati. “Frenkie wasn’t ready yet, we needed a few more minutes for Frenkie to come out and so we said ok, let’s start with Ansu in that position and then let’s switch him with Frenkie and that’s what we did a little bit later.
“For Frenkie today was an important step, to come back to the team after having suffered such a serious injury, playing some mins today was important for him.
I would have liked to have used him earlier but he came on when he did, he’s come a long way, got some touches, ran a little bit, it was important for him to feel like a football player again, and get that feeling back.”
Ansu Fati rejoined Barcelona this season following a loan spell at Brighton in England last year.
In a commanding victory over Young Boys,Barcelona saw Robert Lewandowski net two goals, while Raphinha and Iñigo Martínez each scored, with Mohamed Camara contributing an own goal to round out the 5-0 win.
“We are a bit more aggressive defensively; we press better; we play compact football; try to look to exploit the spaces, and on top of that, when you win, things are just easier; it’s easier to make these adjustments,” Flick said when asked about his team’s current form. “I think we’re the team with the most offside traps, and for that, we all need to understand the message and our role.”
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach Luis Enrique has admitted uncertainty about how long it will take to rebuild his team into a top contender in Europe following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in Tuesday’s Champions League clash.
With the summer departure of star player Kylian Mbappé to Real Madrid, PSG, a team in the midst of transition, experienced their first loss of the season.
Arsenal took control of the game with first-half goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka, while PSG came close with two efforts hitting the post but ultimately struggled to break down the Premier League team’s defence.
Enrique, who sidelined Ousmane Dembélé due to disciplinary issues, took responsibility for the loss but raised concerns over his squad’s lack of determination.
“Today we were far away from the standards you need in this kind of match. Arsenal were much better in terms of pressure and intensity; they won every duel,” Luis Enrique told reporters.
“It’s impossible to play for a positive result when you don’t win any of your duels on the pitch; their defenders anticipated our attackers, and our defenders didn’t anticipate their attackers. Arsenal were superior.”
Last season, the Spaniard guided PSG to the Champions League semifinals, overcoming his former team, Barcelona, in the quarterfinals, with Mbappé netting twice and Dembélé also scoring to reverse the result in the second leg.
Currently leading Ligue 1 and having secured a win against Girona in their openingChampions League group match, Luis Enrique acknowledged that facing Arsenal presented a much tougher challenge for his team.
“I can’t properly evaluate the level of our team; we will have to wait until the end of the season,” he said.
“This was our first big rival at a higher level. We knew from the first minute they would press us high, and they did it aggressively, and we couldn’t cope with that pressure.
“[Arsenal manager] Mikel [Arteta] has been here for five years; I’ve been in Paris for one year and two months. I don’t know where we are. I have a clear idea where I want us to be, but I don’t know how much time I will need.”
Outspoken broadcaster Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known asCountryman Songo, has criticised former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah for not tackling what he believes are critical issues affecting the team during his meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee.
According to Songo, Appiah should have focused on addressing concerns about the hiring of subpar coaches and an alleged bias against local players.
“Say things the way they need to be said; don’t be afraid. It is clear that Stephen Appiah and others are beating around the bush. They know the real problems of our national team, but they ignore it,” he said in a video shared on his YouTube channel.
“You should’ve told them the truth when you were called. The main issue that Appiah should have addressed was the appointment of bad coaches. He should’ve told parliament.
The most bizarre appointment among them all is the appointment of Otto Addo,” he added.
He said Appiah during his heydays played alongside local players at the Black Stars who were top talents; hence, leading a fight for local players to be given a chance is long overdue.
“First of all, since when did they realise that the local boys deserve a chance to play the Black Stars? When he was a Black Stars player, there were local players as well, and they were very good players.
Today, the truth is that some GFA officials have decided not to allow local players to play for the Black Stars. And also hiring of mediocre coaches.”
For several years, Ghana has largely relied on foreign-based players for the Black Stars, sparking concerns about the technical team continuously overlooking local talent.
At his meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports on September 25, 2024, Appiah reminisced about a time when homegrown players and foreign-based stars collaborated effectively to form a balanced squad.
“The local players should be given the chance to play for the national team. In our time, there were key players, but we worked hard for it. For instance, in the 2004 World Cup, Osei Kufuor, who was playing in Italy, was benched in the second game for Shilla Illiasu, who was playing for Kotoko.
There are other instances where local players did well for the team.”
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addohas officially appointed 21 new judges to the High Court, emphasising the importance of maintaining the judiciary’s integrity and fostering a culture of professionalism within the legal system.
The swearing-in, which occurred on September 30, 2024, Abigail Animah Asare, Dorinda Smith-Arthur, Veronique Praba Tetteh, Charles Kwasi Acheampong, Arith Nsemoh, Abdul Razak Musah, Samuel Djanie Kotey, Stephen Kumi, Abbas Abubakari Adams, Felix Datsomor, Agnes Opoku-Barnieh, Afia Owusuaa Appiah, Ellen Ofei-Ayeh, Winnie Amoatey-Owusu, Enid Marful-Sau, Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie, Ernest Pascal Gemadzie, Nathan Parker Yarney, Oliver Abada, Frimpong Amoako, and Akosua Dansoa Asiama Christopher.
During a concise ceremony at Jubilee House in Accra, the President urged the new judges to recognize that their responsibilities extend beyond legal knowledge and skills; they must also embody impartiality and possess the courage to administer justice fairly and without bias.
He said underpinning this was extreme professionalism and the rule of law.
The President said much of the judiciary’s work began and often ended at the High Court, stating that the Ghanaian people were looking to the judges to demonstrate honesty, sound judgement, and a strong commitment to the rule of law.
“But beyond qualifications, it is their sense of fairness, independence of mind, and devotion to the rule of law that will ultimately define their service as High Court justices,” he said while congratulating them on their elevation.
President Akufo-Addo noted that the determination of Ghanaians to build a nation governed by justice, equity, and fairness could only be guaranteed by the judiciary, particularly the High Court, which played a central role in maintaining and preserving those values.
“The responsibilities that lie before you as High Court justices are thus indeed formidable.
“You are tasked with upholding the fundamental human rights of every citizen, acting as impartial arbiters in disputes between the state and its citizens, and between citizens themselves. You must be the bulwark that defends the liberties of our people and promotes the orderly and just development of our nation,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo emphasised that the authority and respect held by the High Court were crucial for the nation’s effective functioning, stressing that the role of the newly appointed justices went beyond just interpreting the law; “it also involved ensuring that justice is delivered fairly and with integrity.”
To this end, he called on all 21 new justices to exemplify honesty, good judgement, and a strong commitment to the rule of law, since the Ghanaian people were counting on them to uphold these principles.
“I say this: your task is not merely one of interpreting the law…It is also about showing that justice is served impartially and with integrity. The Ghanaian people are looking to you to demonstrate honesty, sound judgement, and a strong attachment to the rule of law,” he stressed.
President Akufo-Addo also urged the judges to avoid corruption in their roles, stating, “Even the slightest hint of corruption irreversibly undermines the authority and effectiveness of our courts and other institutions.”
The tragic event occurred on Friday, September 27, 2024, around 7:30 PM, when unidentified assailants attacked and killed the chief priest.
During a press conference in Accra on Monday, Nii Okojaman, the Dzaatsese of Ngleshie Alata, lamented the brutal murder of Nii Ayitey Konko V, calling it a tragic and heartbreaking loss for the community.
He praised the late chief priest for his ten years of devoted service, highlighting his commitment and integrity.
Nii Okojaman expressed his anguish over the violence that preceded the murder, noting that Nii Ayitey Konko had been subjected to increasing threats and harassment since the passing of Oblempong Kojo Ababio V.
He also indicated that despite multiple complaints filed with the Ghana Police Service, no action was taken to ensure the chief priest’s safety, leaving him unprotected.
“The threats against Nii Ayitey Konko began after the passing of Oblempong Kojo Ababio V, with the opposing faction allegedly employing thugs and land guards to terrorise him,” Nii Okojaman disclosed.
He further disclosed that the late chief priest had applied for a police extract on August 29, 2024, detailing the incidents and seeking protection, but no action was taken prior to his tragic demise.
Nii Okojaman further said that a meeting was convened by the Regional Coordinating Council, chaired by the Regional Minister, to address the escalating concerns surrounding the late chief priest’s safety.
The Dzaatsese said at the meeting, the Regional Minister instructed the Regional Police Commander, Arhin, to act on Nii Ayitey Konko’s formal complaint, which highlighted the threats to his life and detailed previous reports he had filed.
However, according to Nii Okojaman, Commander Arhin failed to take action, instead showing support for the opposing faction, which had allegedly taken illegal control of the Ngleshie Alata Palace.
On September 19, 2024, Nii Ayitey Konko formally petitioned the Ghana Police Commander regarding the lack of response to his earlier complaints.
In the petition, he warned, “My life has been in danger… if I lose my life today, I have no one to blame but the Ghana Police,” underscoring the urgency of his situation, which was ultimately ignored.
Nii Okojaman urged the President of Ghana to intervene immediately to ensure the arrest of those responsible for Nii Ayitey Konko’s murder and also called on the Regional Minister to investigate Commander Arhin’s inaction.
“We will not be intimidated by Commander Arhin or the oppressors who tookNii Ayitey Konko’s life,” the Dzaatsese stressed.
Lead Convenor ofDemocracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor,has clarified his actions during the recent #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse protest, where he took the ignition key from a police towing vehicle.
He stated that his intention was to stop the truck from potentially harming protesters as law enforcement attempted to tow a vehicle carrying essential supplies for the demonstration. Following this incident, Barker-Vormawor was arrested and faced charges related to his conduct during the protest.
“One of the things is that we brought a little van that has all our equipment inside. It has water, placards, medicine, food, and a public address system. The vehicle had just come and was parked under a tree.
Then we saw police officers, and that’s when the escalation started. We saw police officers start to go around the vehicle, presumably thinking that we were going to use the vehicle to do something.
In fact, the vehicle was parked under the tree, so I called the driver and told him to lock the vehicle and remove a laptop that was in there; it can stand there; it’s not a problem,” he explained in an interview he granted to Metro TV before his arrest on Monday, September 23, 2024.
“Shortly thereafter, we saw them bringing a tow truck. Despite the individuals and lives there, they started pushing the tow truck right on our legs, and this was deeply concerning to us. So we were finding all kinds of ways to prevent them from towing the vehicle which our supplies were in; this was a humanitarian vehicle,” he added.
"I put the Vehicle off to stop it from pressing on the protesters..Then I moved towards where the other Police were and threw the keys to them. That's all I did" @barkervogues clears the air on his "Alleged" removal of Keys from a Police Vehicle at the recent… pic.twitter.com/BMeSZaDNDz
The activist stated that he was compelled to remove the ignition key of the truck as a last resort to stop the vehicle from causing injury to the protesters.
Contrary to some claims, he emphasised that his aim was to ensure the safety of the protesters as he immediately threw the key into a crowd of police officers gathered around the scene.
So I turned the vehicle off in order to stop it from continuing to press onto protesters that were there, and what do I do? I moved towards where the other police were and threw the key towards them,” he explained.
“The vehicle continued to back onto us; eventually you see them start pressing in on us. So you see them pressing in, pushing on me with their batons. So I knew that we had to find a way to extricate ourselves if not people were going to get seriously injured.
“So then you see me eventually find a way to walk out of the police vehicle, go around the police vehicle to see how we can find a way to stop this vehicle from continuing to press on people in order to save lives. So I go in there and I see that they had abandoned the vehicle and it was still on.
Oliver Barker-Vormaworis among more than 50 individuals facing a range of charges, including conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and assault on a public officer, stemming from a three-day protest that escalated into chaos, resulting in numerous arrests.
The prosecution alleges that Barker-Vormawor forcibly entered a police towing vehicle, unauthorizedly shutting off the engine and taking out the ignition key. Following his court appearance, he was ordered to remain in custody by a judge in Accra.
After a slow start to the season, Foden capitalised on his second start of the campaign to shine on the European stage.
The match began with Ilkay Gundogan scoring the opener in the eighth minute, netting his first goal since returning to the team with a deflected effort.
Just seven minutes later, Foden found the back of the net himself, skilfully placing a shot into the bottom corner.
City’s dominance continued as they struck the woodwork three times, with efforts from Foden, Gundogan, and Jeremy Doku, but it was Erling Haaland who extended their lead, netting his 11th goal of the season shortly before the hour mark by rounding the goalkeeper, Dominik Takac.
In the 74th minute, Foden set up substitute James McAtee, who scored his first goal for City.
Despite several opportunities, including a stellar performance from goalkeeper Takac that kept the scoreline from escalating, the win marked City’s first in the new Champions League format following a draw againstInter Milan in their previous match.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted approval for the Accra Sports Stadium to serve as the venue for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Ghana and Sudan.
The Black Stars will compete against the Falcons of Jediane during match day three of the qualification series for the tournament, which is set to take place in Morocco.
Previously, CAF had instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to identify an alternative location after the initial temporary approval for the Baba Yara Stadium was revoked.
Following an inspection of both the Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium last week, CAF ultimately chose to reject the Cape Coast venue. A statement from CAF confirmed the approval.
‘’Following a comprehensive review of the reports of the CAF independent inspection regarding the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadia, we are pleased to inform you that the Accra Sports Stadium has been approved to host the AFCON Qualifiers for Morocco 2025. Specifically, it will host the Group F – Matchday 3 encounter between Ghana and Sudan, which is scheduled for October 11, 2024.
“In light of this approval, we kindly request that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the stadium management team prioritise the necessary enhancements to the pitch and other critical areas of the stadium leading up to the match day to ensure an optimal experience for both teams and the attending fans.
“Please note that CAF will continue to closely monitor the readiness of the stadium for this match, as well as for future CAF-sanctioned events.”
The Black Starsaim to revive their qualifying campaign after starting with two disappointing results against Angola and Niger, where they failed to secure a win. This crucial match is set to take place on Friday, October 11, 2024.
The government has announced plans to construct 2,225 new homes for those affected by theAkosombo Dam spillage that occurred in October of the previous year.
This initiative will replace residences lost during the incident and accounts for 40% of the total claims filed during the validation process, as stated by Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister of Works and Housing.
The government is expected to invest between 400 and 500 million Ghana Cedis for the entire resettlement project, which will include the new housing units and additional facilities for the impacted areas.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) released excess water from the Akosombo Dam on October 15, 2023, in a bid to maintain the dam’s safety and structural integrity.
This spillage led to flooding in several low-lying communities, including Mepe, Battor, Sogakope, Mafi, Adidome, and Ada, all located within the North and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region.
While providing an update on the housing sector during a media briefing in Accra, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah highlighted that earlier this year, in April, the government commenced the construction of 115 housing units specifically for those affected by the dam spillage.
Currently, the construction of the 115 housing units is 60% complete. The initial phase of the project includes a total of 1,010 housing units, with the Ministry having received a Commitment Certificate to allocate GHc200 million from the government.
Work on the remaining housing units will commence once additional funds are secured from the central government.
During a recent briefing, the focus was on the government’s strategies to address halted housing projects, create a public-private partnership framework with incentives to reduce the housing deficit, ensure sustainable financing for housing initiatives, expedite the completion of affordable housing developments, and secure land banks for future projects.
The Minister also discussed several key affordable housing initiatives that the Ministry has been implementing to tackle the housing shortage in the country.
He highlighted several ongoing housing initiatives, including the Pokuase-Afiaman Housing Project, which consists of 8,000 units. Additionally, he mentioned the Saglemi Housing Project, where 5,000 units are planned, with 1,506 of those currently partially finished.
There are also 342 units in the Koforidua Affordable Housing Project and 1,904 units under the Tema Development Company (TDC), of which 1,072 are complete.
Furthermore,609 housing units for public sector workers are in progress and are expected to be ready for allocation to interested applicants by October of this year.
“This government remains steadfast in its commitment to providing decent, safe, secure, and affordable housing for all its citizens,” Mr Oppong Nkrumah assured.
Ivory Coast, the top cocoa producer globally, has raised the price it offers farmers for cocoa, now outpacing Ghana, despite both countries’ growers still receiving considerably lower payments than international market rates.
The Ivorian government announced a 20% increase in the farmgate price to 1,800 CFA francs (approximately $3.06) per kilogramme, effective from the harvest starting on October 1, as stated by Agriculture Minister Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani in Abidjan.
This updated price translates to $3,060 per tonne, slightly higher than Ghana’s rate of $3,039 per tonne for its farmers this cocoa season.
The increase may discourage the smuggling of cocoa from Ivory Coast to Ghana, which is the second-largest producer in the world.
However, it might not entirely address the issue of illegal cocoa exports to neighbouring countries such as Liberia and Guinea, where prices are closer to global market values.
During the previous cocoa season, West Africa’s production was significantly hindered by unfavorable weather conditions, pest outbreaks, and insufficient agricultural resources.
This led to a sharp increase in cocoa futures, which surpassed $11,000 per tonne earlier this year. However, prices have since dropped, with futures trading at approximately $7,700 per tonne in New York as of Monday.
Despite this rise in global prices, the pricing structures enforced by both the Ivorian and Ghanaian governments have prevented farmers from fully capitalising on the market upturn.
This situation has deterred investment in cocoa farming and has also encouraged smuggling to neighbouring nations, where market regulations are less stringent and prices tend to be higher.
According to a Bloomberg report from September 19,Côte d’Ivoireis estimated to have lost between 150,000 and 200,000 tonnes of cocoa due to smuggling during the crop year ending Monday.
To tackle these issues, Côte d’Ivoire plans to align its output control, pricing, and marketing systems with Ghana starting from the 2024-25 season as part of a “strategic cooperation” initiative between the two nations, as announced by Adjoumani.

Pastor Hammond Love, widely known as Pastor Love, has been sentenced to 48 months in prison by an Accra Circuit Court for automobile theft.
The case against Pastor Love dates back to 2017, when he was charged with selling a vehicle without the owner’s permission.
The prosecution presented evidence from the complainant, Samuel Amankwah, who imported a Toyota Highlander into the country in 2016 and entrusted Pastor Love with the task of clearing it.
After the vehicle was cleared, Amankwah instructed Pastor Love to sell it for $50,000 and to deduct the clearance fees from that amount.
However, Amankwah later decided to cancel this arrangement as he intended to travel to Ghana in April 2017, at which point he would settle the clearance costs with Pastor Love.
Upon his return to Ghana, Pastor Love was unable to present the car despite numerous requests from the complainant.
When arrested for his failure to produce the vehicle, Pastor Love claimed he had taken out a loan of GHC 40,000 with a 20% interest rate to cover the car’s clearance.
He argued that the accumulating interest led him to sell the car without Amankwah’s permission for GHC 80,000, using GHC 70,000 to repay the loan company.
However,Pastor Love was unable to direct the police to the loan company or identify the individual who purchased the vehicle.
During the court proceedings today presided over by His Honour Isaac Addo, Pastor Love appealed for leniency, citing his status as a first-time offender and his willingness to pay a fine. His request was, however, denied.
The judge remarked that, as a pastor, Pastor Love should exemplify integrity and uphold trustworthiness.
He acknowledged the complainant’s rightful ownership of the car and emphasised that Pastor Love’s sale of the vehicle without consent warranted a strong deterrent sentence.
Presidential Candidate for the Alliance for Revolutionary Change, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has presented a detailed strategy aimed at combating illegal mining, often referred to as galamsey, emphasizing the need to demobilize the equipment involved in such activities.
He criticized the current government’s tactic of seizing and incinerating excavators, labelling it “ineffective and nonsensical.”
Instead, Kyerematen advocates for a more organized and sustainable approach by utilising the military to assist in the demobilization of mining machinery.
This proposal forms part of his comprehensive 10-point plan to address the galamsey crisis, which includes implementing a one-year nationwide suspension of small-scale and community mining operations.
This pause is intended to facilitate improved regulation and environmental restoration.
Kyerematen expressed these views during a meeting organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) on October 1, 2024.
“Demobilisation of all machinery and equipment that are currently used in small-scale and community mining. Under the supervision of the military, if you demobilise equipment, you need to do three things: first, you need to keep them under inventory, two, you need to have them properly stored; and third, you need to preserve them.
“This practice of burning equipment doesn’t make any sense. And that is why the GRP is proposing that you demobilise, and inventorize them so that you know what you have. Otherwise, after one year, they will be out of use.”
Proponents of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as theAnti-Gay Bill, have scheduled a peaceful march to the Supreme Court to protest delays in the final ruling on the bill.
Scheduled for Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the march will begin at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, with participants proceeding to submit petitions to the Attorney General and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
The demonstration aims to push for a resolution to the bill, which has been in limbo since Parliament passed it on February 28, 2024.
The peaceful protest, initially set for two months earlier, will include various religious groups and key stakeholders. The decision to go ahead with the march follows the Supreme Court’s ruling on July 17, 2024, to delay its verdict on anti-gay cases until all legal issues are settled.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities across Ghana. During the march, the sponsors intend to formally request Chief Justice Torkonoo to set a date for the court’s final decision on the matter, highlighting the ongoing national debate on LGBTQ+ rights.
Sam George, the bill’s lead advocate, voiced his concerns in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV, criticising the Supreme Court’s slow action in scheduling a hearing. He stressed that the court’s delay is impeding the resolution of a critical national issue.
“Basically what the Supreme Court has done is stage judgements. The judiciary today is stopping the legislature from doing a constitutional mandate. Based on Article 106/7 of the Constitution, the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court have basically restrained Parliament from doing so without uttering those words.
“Now you say you want to hear the main case, they haven’t said anything to us; they haven’t given us a timetable. Are you hearing it now? One month or two years, nobody knows what’s going on. She has not even called the main case. We need a timetable to know what she’s going to call the case.”
The Member of Parliament noted that the Supreme Court has previously heard cases during vacation periods, highlighting the inconsistency in delaying this particular case.
He emphasised that further delays are not in the country’s best interest.
“The Supreme Court has been hearing cases during vacation. During vacation, the court of the land has been sitting, and it’s about placing a premium on it.
Earlier two months ago, a decision was taken by the sponsors and some other partners, the Chief Imam’s office, and Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Church that we were going to march to the Chief Justice’s office and give a petition to her, demanding from her to give us a timetable.
“This is a major national issue; we need to have a final determination on the matter, and they should act expeditiously. It’s not a matter the Supreme Court can choose and be lackadaisical or drag its feet. We want to see some action.
“It’s coming off this Tuesday, October 8, we will start from Kwame Nkrumah Circle, a peaceful march, nobody is supposed to come with party colours. We will march to the Supreme Court to demand a ruling on the case.”
Background
On February 28, 2024, Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, 2024, a law that outlaws LGBTQ+ activities, including their advocacy, promotion, and financial support.
Under the new legislation, individuals found guilty of engaging in such activities could face imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 3 years. Those involved in promoting or sponsoring these actions could receive jail terms of 3 to 5 years.
The act has been met with legal challenges, with private lawyers Richard Dela Sky and gender activist Dr. Amanda Odoi filing lawsuits to have the law nullified. Additionally, Prince Obiri-Korang,a law lecturer from the University of Ghana, has taken legal steps to overturn the statute.
Although the bill has passed Parliament, its future remains unclear, as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has yet to sign it into law, amid growing international pressure and concerns about its potential economic consequences for Ghana.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, first introduced in 2021, has sparked intense debate, with supporters advocating for the preservation of traditional family structures and critics warning of human rights violations.

Head of the Centre for Ageing Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Joseph Osafo, has thrown his support behind ongoing protests against illegal mining, highlighting the health risks associated with the practice.
During a panel discussion on Peace FM on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, he stressed that consuming water contaminated by galamsey activities poses serious threats to the reproductive system, reinforcing the urgency to put a stop to illegal mining operations.
“It affects your sperm quality; it affects your egg quality. So the direction the youth have taken is very good, but there are issues with their actions. We have to do it again and show Ghanaians and our leaders that we deserve better.
This is not the state of the water bodies left to us by our forefathers. You could drink directly from the rivers, but now you can’t try that. All the water bodies are poisoned,” he stated.
Prof. Osafo’s statement was in response to the arrest of over 50 protesters by the police during a recent anti-galamsey demonstration organized by Democracy Hub.
While lauding the police, Prof. Osafo charged the protesters not to relent in their pursuit but to ensure decency in their quest.
“So I applaud the police and also advise our brothers that the protest is good, so they have to come again and do it decently this time,” he stated.
Police have reported that the protesters were involved in acts of disorder, leading to their arraignment before the court. More than 50 of them have since been remanded in custody after their court appearance.
In the meantime, another protest against illegal miningis set to take place in Accra from October 3 to October 5, 2024.
The demonstration aims to intensify pressure on the government to tackle illegal mining while also calling for the release of the detained protesters.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has urged citizens to exercise patience as the country navigates a challenging economic landscape.
He made this appeal during his Independence Day address, . He defended his contentious economic reforms, asserting that they are essential and beginning to yield positive outcomes.
Tinubu also claimed that Nigeria is making progress in combating the violence that has plagued the northern regions, a statement that some may find hard to believe given the ongoing issues.
Meanwhile, demonstrations in the capital, Abuja, and in Lagos marked the 64th anniversary of independence from Britain, with protesters expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s economic management.
President Tinubu began his speech on Tuesday by telling Nigerians: “I am deeply aware of the struggles many of you face in these challenging times… I plead for your patience as the reforms we are implementing show positive signs, and we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.
Following the speech, Lagos resident Michael Olaleye told the Reuters news agency: “Personally, me I am doubting if it is something that is going to work out because it has not shown really… majority of what the president is talking about has not shown.”
But another city dweller, Victory Azimih, urged Nigerians to be “optimistic” and acknowledge that the government cannot “fix everything”.
Tinubu also addressed security in his speech, saying: “I am happy to announce to you, my compatriots, that our administration is winning the war on terror and banditry.”
He added that the government has eliminated commanders from Boko Haram – a leading Islamist militant group in Nigeria – “faster than ever”.
The military in Nigeria has escalated its efforts against armed groups, increasing both aerial bombardments and ground operations. According to a military spokesperson, nearly 2,000 alleged terrorists were “neutralized” in the third quarter of the year.
However, there have been tragic incidents amid these operations.
Just last week, a military airstrike intended for armed groups in Kaduna state resulted in 24 casualties, hitting a mosque and residential areas, according to local reports.
Additionally, there are ongoing concerns about civilian safety, as attacks by these armed groups continue to be reported.
Recently, media outlets indicated that armed attackers killed two individuals and abducted 44 more in separate incidents in Zamfara andKaduna states.
This surge in violence has prompted protests, with demonstrators expressing their frustrations over the “destruction, hunger, insecurity, and the difficulties” attributed to the current government’s actions.
Similar protests occurred in August, resulting in the deaths of at least 21 people and numerous arrests on various charges.

Chairperson of theElectoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has reported that significant progress has been made in addressing the issues identified in the voter register.
This she said during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 1, held at the Alisa Hotel.
She noted that while the register is still a work in progress and contains some minor inaccuracies, this is to be expected in any large-scale registration exercise.
Jean Mensa reassured stakeholders that the commission is aware of these challenges and is actively working to correct them.
“These errors are not unusual. All it takes are conscientious efforts to get them resolved,” she stated.
She assured political party representatives that the EC has already taken steps to correct the discrepancies identified since the initial release of the voter register.
“You will realise that the voters register for today is different from what was provided to the parties in August,” she explained.
Jean Mensa highlighted that the discrepancies detected to date have been largely rectified.
“The register that we have today is different from what was given to the political parties in August,” she reiterated, urging all stakeholders to trust the commission in its efforts.
“We have a track record of delivering free and fair elections. Our staff are well trained, and we have what it takes to produce a credible register,” Jean Mensa added.
She called on all political parties to trust the commission ahead of the December polls.
Anthony Joshua has received a temporary suspension from boxing following his recent knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last week. The fighter from Watford was defeated in the fifth round during a match at Wembley, where 96,000 spectators witnessed the event.
Dubois successfully defended his IBF heavyweight title with an impressive performance, knocking Joshua down four times throughout the bout.
According to established protocols, Joshua must refrain from boxing for 28 days, a rule enforced by the British Board of Control.
The Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports states that medical suspensions are standard for athletes who have experienced knockout (KO) or technical knockout (TKO) losses.
This brief suspension is not expected to significantly impact Joshua’s career, especially since he has not yet named his next opponent and has expressed his intention to continue competing in the sport.
Following his defeat by Dubois, the two-time champion said: ‘And you’re probably asking, “Do I want to continue fighting?” Of course I want to continue fighting
‘That’s why I said we took a shot at success and we came up short. And what does that mean right now?
‘Are we going to run away? Are we going to live to fight another day? And that’s what I am. A warrior’.
Joshua also praised Dubois, saying: ‘We have to give credit to my opponent Daniel.
‘When I sign up to fight opponents, I don’t really like them in my head anymore, but now it’s done, I take my hat off to him and say well done to him and his team.’
In a recent interview conducted in the ring on Saturday night, Eddie Hearn mentioned thatJoshua has arematch clause allowing him to challenge Dubois once more.
Head of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), Samuel Eto’o, has received a six-month ban from attending matches involving the national teams due to breaches of FIFA’s disciplinary rules according to an announcement from the governing body of football.
Eto’o, a former striker for Barcelona, has been leading Fecafoot since 2021 and will now be prohibited from attending all men’s and women’s matches across different age categories during this period.
“The sanction was imposed in connection with the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup round-of-16 match between Brazil and Cameroon played in Bogota, Colombia, on 11 September 2024,” FIFA said in a statement on Monday.
Details regarding the incidents were not disclosed by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. The statement said Eto’o was deemed guilty of “offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play” and “misconduct” involving officials.
The charges stem from Cameroon’s recent knockout match against Brazil, which ended in a 3-1 defeat for Cameroon after extra time. During the game, Eto’o and the Cameroon delegation were incensed by a penalty decision that allowed Brazil to equalise.
Although Eto’o, aged 43 and a former player for Chelsea in the English Premier League, is banned from attending any national matches—regardless of gender or age—this sanction does not impact his presidency at Fecafoot.
Earlier this year, Eto’o faced a fine of $200,000 imposed by the Confederation of African Football for engaging in a branding deal with an online gambling company, which was deemed an ethical violation.
Additionally, he has been at odds with the sports ministry in Cameroon over their appointment of Belgian Marc Brys as the men’s team coach, which Eto’o deemed “illegal.”
As a four-time African Player of the Year, Eto’o is recognised as Cameroon’s second-most capped player, following Rigobert Song. His club career was marked by significant success, including winning the Champions League four times with three different clubs.
In a controversial incident during the2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, he was captured on video in a physical altercation with a man outside a stadium following a tense exchange.
Such claims frequently emerge during times of poor performance by the national teams, with critics alleging mismanagement of public money by the FA.
In recent times, the FA has faced scrutiny for allegedly exaggerating budget estimates for tournaments to benefit personally.
However, at a hearing before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Monday, Okraku emphasised that the GFA does not manage the finances associated with the national teams.
“For the record, the government of Ghana doesn’t give GFA any money. The Ministry of Youth and Sports funds national team-related activities. No money comes into the GFA’s coffers from the government,” Okraku said.
He explained that the Sports Ministry handles all financial aspects, including budgets and payments for tournaments and qualifiers. An accountant from the Ministry oversees these costs, with the GFA having no involvement.
“Monies used for national teams are paid to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. They make all statutory payments. No cedi comes to the FA,” Okraku added.
Okraku’s testimony before the Parliamentary Select Committee came in response to a petition from the Save Ghana Football group, which organized a protest after theBlack Stars’ disappointing performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The group raised several issues, including demands for transparency regarding the funds allocated from the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 AFCON.
They also expressed concerns over the current funding strategy, claiming that an excessive amount of taxpayer money is directed towards the Black Stars, often neglecting other national teams.
The group proposed that the GFA collaborate with the National Sports Authority on financial planning, as the NSA holds legal responsibility for these matters.
In a tragic incident in the remote town ofLusikisiki, South Africa, a mass shooting has claimed the lives of eighteen individuals, prompting a manhunt for the assailants, according to local police.
Authorities reported that two homes on the same street were targeted during the attack. At one location, 12 women and one man were killed, while a second site saw the deaths of three women and another man.
The South African Police Service confirmed that the 18th victim succumbed to injuries in the hospital on Sunday.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu stated that the motive behind the shootings remains unclear. In a press release on Sunday, police indicated that, aside from the confirmation of the 18th victim’s death, there have been no significant updates, and no suspects have been arrested yet.
Officials noted that the victims were all relatives and neighbours from Nyathi village, Ngobozana, in Lusikisiki.
Reports from South African media revealed that the victims were gathered at the homes to prepare for a traditional mourning ceremony honouring a mother and daughter who had been murdered a year earlier.
They were in the process of organising goods and presents, including furniture, for the ceremony when the shooting occurred on Friday night.
“We heard gunshots and doors that were kicked,” Nomnikelo Ndlovu, one of the residents who was able to hide during the attack, told state broadcaster SABC.
“We tried to hide, and three people were shot. We are still traumatised.”
In a statement on Saturday, the police minister said that there had been a total of 19 people sleeping in two homes in the same yard at one of the shooting locations.
Mchunu added that there had been six survivors at that homestead – four women, a man, and a two-month-old child. A police spokesperson said earlier that the child was uninjured but had been taken to the hospital as a precaution.
There were no survivors at the other homestead.
Mchunu said a team of detectives and forensic experts, including crime scene managers from Pretoria, had been deployed “to piece all [the] evidence together in a bid to apprehend these brutal criminals.”
Regional cabinet member for community safety Xolile Nqatha told SABC that he hoped the critically injured man would make a “speedy” recovery, as “his recovery can help us shed more light” on the shooting.
He also indicated that the attackers might have had some familiarity with the victims.
According to recent statistics from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, South Africa has one of the highest murder rates globally.
In 2022, the country recorded over 27,000 homicides, translating to 45 murders per 100,000 people within a population nearing 60 million. In contrast, the murder rate in the United States stands at six per 100,000.
Health authorities have conducted investigations revealing that the polio cases found in the Eastern Region are linked to a strain currently present in Algeria.
While the origin of the virus remains unidentified, officials are preparing to launch a nationwide mass vaccination campaign, intending to coordinate these efforts with neighbouring countries.
In response to the discovery of a circulating Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus in a river in Koforidua on September 19, the Ministry of Health declared a public health emergency.
This declaration has prompted enhanced surveillance measures to track the source of the virus.
The vaccination initiative aims to immunise approximately 5.5 million children under five years old over the next three weeks.
This effort will be conducted in two phases, with the second phase planned to occur simultaneously with neighboring countries to ensure a synchronised response as the virus seems to be spreading within the sub-region.
Dr. Kwame Amponsa-Achiano, Programme Manager for the Expanded Programme on Immunisation, stated in an interview with 3News that despite the unknown source of the virus, measures are being intensified to address the situation as an outbreak.
“…We are planning to do that in October, towards the middle part of October, maybe the third.
We usually do it for four days. So somewhere around 17th or a week after we do the first round, it’s usually a minimum of two rounds of campaign, and then we’ll do the second one in November.
And we are likely to synchronise with some countries in the subregion, because, as I told you, this has taken on an international dimension because of the linking to Algeria, the Nigerian stream.”
He further noted that processes have already been activated for vaccines from development partners.
“This one is linked to Algeria. I mean, it’s even crossed international borders already, and therefore it cannot be a subnational campaign but a subregional campaign, meaningGhana plus other countries.
