Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho explainedon Wednesday that he skipped the post-match press conference following Saturday’s 3-1 derby defeat to Galatasaray because he “felt disrespected” after being kept waiting for over an hour.
Despite it being Fenerbahce’s first loss of the Super Lig season, leaving them five points behind their rivals, Mourinho clarified that his decision to not attend had no connection to the outcome of the game.
“In 24 years of football, I never in my life escaped from a press conference, especially after a defeat,” Mourinho, who took charge of Fenerbahce in June, said.
“I never had fear of any journalist, any question or any press conference. So [it] wouldn’t be with you that I was going to change my way of being.”
Mourinho shared that he shook hands with Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk after the match and completed the flash interview immediately afterward.
However, he expressed frustration at having to wait so long for the post-match press conference, stating it “makes no sense.” He mentioned that he even stood by the door but was not permitted to enter.
“It has nothing to do with the result, it has nothing to do with anything. It has only to do with something that is correct or is not correct,” Mourinho said. “You finish the game, you go to the flash. And then you wait 15 minutes, 20 minutes, half an hour. And the away coach goes.
“Seventy minutes, I’m sorry, but it’s a lack of respect. So if anybody felt disrespected, I am the one that felt disrespected.”
After the result,Galatasaray posted on their official X account a Photoshopped image of a book titled “The Crying One,” with an image of Mourinho — who famously described himself as a “Special One” during his first spell at Chelsea — looking sad on the cover with the caption: “On sale in stores around Kadıköy.”
Former Black Stars player Derek Boateng has expressed strong disapproval of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the poor state of football pitches across the country, igniting a nationwide debate.
Boateng accused the GFA of neglecting the upkeep of stadiums in favor of financial interests, resulting in deteriorating playing conditions.
The ex-Getafe midfielder pointed out that the subpar quality of the pitches has hindered the Black Stars’ performance, as the players struggle on such uneven surfaces.
Speaking to 3Sports, he called on the GFA to prioritise upgrading the national stadiums to better support the players and enhance their performance.
“The FA needs to wake up and do something because it is their job to ensure that all the fields are in good condition for the players. The only thing they care about, and I will say it every single day, is money.
We have players coming from Europe, where they play on good fields, and then they come here and play on poor pitches. You expect them to perform well and win games, but if the wins don’t come, it becomes a problem.
“The FA officials know what it means for a player to perform well. We shouldn’t have to deal with this. Ghana should have proper fields for home games. It’s really sad to hear about this situation,” he said, as reported by 3Sports on X.
Derek Boateng’s remarks came after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) revoked its provisional approval of the Baba Yara Stadium, citing concerns over an uneven pitch, poor drainage, and insufficient grass coverage.
CAF’s decision followed Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against Angola on September 5, 2024.
In light of this, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the GFA to arrange inspections of the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Stadium by CAF officials to assess their suitability for hosting Black Stars matches.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addohas assured the international community that Ghana’s upcoming general elections will be free, fair, and transparent.
He reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to upholding democratic values and the rule of law, outlining the steps being taken to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Speaking during the world leaders’ address at the annual UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, he stated, “As my presidency draws to a close, I want to assure this assembly that the upcoming 2024 elections in Ghana will be free, fair and transparent.
“Ghanaians have demonstrated time and again in the last three decades the strong attachment to democracy, which they will not permit to be undermined.
“The EC supported by Ghana’ssecurity services is well equipped to ensure that the will of the Ghanaian people is well respected.”
Electoral Commission (EC) officials in the Ashanti Region have initiated steps to remove around 580 names from the Manhyia South voter register, following a court order.
The action was prompted after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency flagged irregularities during the voter transfer exercise and sought legal clarification.
On Tuesday, the Kumasi Magistrate Court, presided over by Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkor, directed the EC to return the affected voters to their original constituencies.
Speaking with Citi News, NPP Manhyia South Constituency Secretary, Alhaji Haruna Alhassan, emphasised that the party would ensure the ruling is fully implemented.
He also urged other NPP stronghold constituencies to check for similar anomalies and seek legal redress where necessary.
“It was during the transfer that we, the NPP in the Manhyia South constituency, became conscious about certain things relative to the transfer of votes to the constituency.
“We became conscious because the transfers to the constituency were not normal to us, but per the LI, there is nothing we could have done…During the exhibition, we followed up and found out that about five or six polling stations out of the 107 polling stations we have in Manhyia South have had some abnormal transfers.”
“For example, we had about 150 transfers to St. Loius Training College of Education…So we sent the matter to court, and we appeared before the court five times.
So eventually yesterday the court ordered that 580 people who were transferred to Manhyia South during the transfer period should be sent back to where their votes were originally. We are going to follow up on that and make sure that the right thing is done,” he stated.
Ministry of Finance has confirmed that it is making progress towards settling the $134 million judgement debt owed to oil conglomerate Trafigura.
In a statement, the Ministry assured that it has initiated the required actions to resolve the payment matter.
“We have made the necessary arrangements to pay off the outstanding claims agreed with Trafigura after several rounds of negotiations,” the statement read, reassuring the public that the government remains committed to honouring its obligations.
This follows a petition from Trafigura, raising concerns and threatening to seize Ghana’s assets in South Africa if the $111 million arrears are not paid.
In a letter to Finance Minister Dr. Adam Amin, Trafigura urged the government to settle the debt by the end of the week to prevent further legal action, while expressing a preference for a peaceful resolution.
The company has already seized one of Ghana’s significant commercial properties, Regina House in London, due to the government’s failure to pay a $134 million judgement debt.
This debt originated from the termination of a power purchase agreement, which sparked a legal dispute between Trafigura and the Government of Ghana.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is scheduled to introduce a Credit Scoring Systemin October 2024, a central pillar of his campaign aimed at simplifying the process for Ghanaians to make purchases on credit and pay in installments.
Dr. Bawumia emphasised that this initiative would transition the nation from a predominantly cash-based economy to one that promotes credit usage, which will greatly benefit small businesses and young entrepreneurs.
At a campaign event in Assin Fosu, he underscored the system’s potential to stimulate economic growth, generate employment, and improve access to credit for individuals across the country.
Dr. Bawumia noted, “This system will open up new opportunities for individuals and small businesses to access credit, which in turn will drive economic growth and job creation.”
At the event, Okumanin Baffour Asare Kyeahene II, the Paramount Chief of the Afutuakwa Traditional Area, urged Dr. Bawumiato address the deteriorating road conditions in the Assin Central Constituency, highlighting it as a significant issue for the local community.
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana couldn’t resist joining the viral dance challenge to KiDi’s hit song ‘Lomo Lomo’ when prompted by a dancer during his recent trip to Cameroon.
The moment, captured in a viral video, took place at the airport during the international break.
After exchanging a few words with the dancer, Onana joined in, moving along to the rhythm of the popular track.
During the September break, Onana featured in goal for Cameroon in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, helping the team secure a 1-0 victory against Namibia and a goalless draw against Zimbabwe.
Onana has also mentioned his intention to take more risks in his goalkeeping style at Manchester United to contribute more effectively to the team.
“Yes, that’s me, and I think it’s what you’re going to see this season because I will take a lot of risks. I can tell you in advance already.
Be prepared because it’s going to be this season, trust me. I will enjoy it even more when this season starts,” he said, as quoted by the Guardian.
Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah has shed light on why players born outside Ghana often struggle to perform well with the national team.
He attributed this challenge to a lack of understanding of the local language and culture, which hinders their ability to fully adapt to the team’s system and playing style.
Appiah recalled that during his era, players had ample opportunities to bond and get to know each other, which helped foreign-born players integrate more easily into the team.
Addressing the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports on September 25, 2024, Appiah clarified that the difficulty these players face is not due to disrespect for coaches, but rather the absence of sufficient social interaction needed for better team cohesion.
🇬🇭Players born abroad find it difficult to adapt in the Black Stars because they don't understand the language and culture – Ex-Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah#JoySportspic.twitter.com/YTQvptOwFm
“These foreign-based players, some of them, don’t speak our local language. When we go to camp, it’s not like in our time when, after lunch or dinner, we would sit, interact, mock each other, and pray together.
“But today, they go to camp and struggle to adapt because they don’t know the culture. It’s not about respect or disrespecting the coaches. I haven’t seen such a thing,” he said.
France’s World Cup-winning defenderRaphael Varanehas officially retired from football at the age of 31, following a severe knee injury.
Varane, who earned 93 caps for France between 2013 and 2022, was instrumental in their 2018 World Cup triumph in Russia and their runner-up finish in Qatar four years later.
Varane began his professional journey with Ligue 1 side Lens before making a high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2011.
During his decade-long stint with the Spanish giants, he played 360 games and collected an impressive haul of trophies, including three La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns.
In 2021, Varane signed with Manchester United, where he made 95 appearances, helping the club win the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
In July, he transferred to Serie A club Como, but his debut was cut short by the knee injury that ultimately led to his decision to hang up his boots.
“I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley,” Varane wrote in a post on Instagram, referencing United’s FA Cup win in May.
“I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it.”
Varane added that he would remain at Como in a non-playing role.
“A new life begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon,” Varane said.
In April, Raphael Varanerevealed that the concussions he sustained over the course of his career had “taken a toll on his body” and emphasized the need for greater awareness among players about the risks associated with heading the ball.
The French defender disclosed that he had suffered a concussion just days before France’s 1-0 loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals, as well as during Real Madrid’s 2020 Champions League last-16 second-leg defeat to Manchester City.
Arsenal is poised togive 16-year-old goalkeeper Jack Porter his debut in the Carabao Cup third-round match against Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday.
First-choice keeper David Raya suffered a knee injury during last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Manchester City, leaving him doubtful for the upcoming fixture.
With summer loan signing Neto cup-tied and 18-year-old Tommy Setford also sidelined due to injury, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is likely to turn to Porter, who just celebrated his 16th birthday in July.
Porter has previously trained with the first team and was on the bench for last week’s goalless draw in the Champions League against Atalanta.
Having signed scholarship terms with the club this summer, he cannot officially sign a professional contract until he turns 17 next year.
On transfer deadline day, Arsenal sought to acquire two goalkeepers after allowing Aaron Ramsdale to transfer to Southampton and sending Karl Hein on loan to Real Valladolid.
Although they secured Neto, they attempted to negotiate deals for Joan García from Espanyol and Dan Bentley from Wolves, but both efforts fell through.
Arteta is anticipated to rotate his squad for the clash with Bolton, potentially including youngsters like Ethan Nwaneri and Miles Lewis-Skelly, while Raheem Sterling may also make his first start after joining on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
Head coach of Al Hilal, Jorge Jesus, has indicated that Neymar is not yet prepared to make a quick comeback following nearly a year on the sidelines due to a knee injury.
The Brazilian forward signed with the Saudi Pro League club in August 2023, but his time on the pitch was limited to just five matches before suffering a significant knee injury while representing his country last October, which included a rupture of his meniscus and ACL.
After undergoing surgery, Neymar resumed training in July, leading to increasing speculation about his imminent return.
However, in a post-match press conference, Jesus tempered those expectations, suggesting that the player still needs more time to fully recover.
“Neymar is an important player for Al Hilal and the league in general,” Jesus, who led Al Hilal to a 19th league title in May, said on Tuesday. “I can’t, however, specify a date as to when he will return, but we will look at the situation in January.”
Neymar will be able to be registered by Al Hilal in January for the second half of the SPL season.
With SPL teams allowed to register a maximum of eight foreign players over the age of 21, Neymar’s place in the roster for the first half of the league campaign was taken by Marcos Leonardo, signed from Benfica earlier in September.
However, upon his return to fitness, Neymar is eligibleto appear in Al Hilal’s ongoing AFC Champions League Elite campaign, as the continental competition has no restrictions on the number of foreign players allowed.
His contract at the club is due to expire in August 2025.
France has dismissed claims of match-fixing after suffering a 4-1 loss to Iran, a result that inadvertently placed them in a more favourable section of the draw at the Futsal world Cup in Uzbekistan.
The match saw France struggle in the first half, ultimately leading to a relatively easy victory for Iran after France allowed a questionable first goal, sparking outrage from several other teams.
This led to complaints being lodged with FIFA by some of those teams.
“FIFA is aware of complaints filed by participating teams at the FIFA Futsal World Cup Uzbekistan 2024 regarding the Group F match between France and IR Iran,” a FIFA spokesperson said in a statement.
“No further comment will be made while this process is ongoing.”
The French Football Federation was not immediately available for comment.
France coach Raphael Reynaud said the way the match played out was about avoiding bookings and injuries.
“It was Iran’s responsibility to be in charge of the game,” he said. “The draw is more open for us, but our main goal was not to get booked and to avoid injuries.”
While both teams had already qualified for the round of 16, the result means France will take on Thailand before a potential quarterfinal against Paraguay, while Iran will face Morocco ahead of a possible clash against world No. 1 Brazil.
“Iran and France, coaches and players alike, have disgraced my sport. You are a disgrace to the world,” Thailand coach Miguel Rodrigo wrote on X.
Retired Brazil great Falcao was quoted by French media as saying: “It shows a lack of respect for the World Cup. The match was clearly fixed from the first minute.”
Pep Guardiola hasconfirmed that Rodri is facing an extended spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury sustained during Manchester City’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
The midfielder has gone to Barcelona for further medical evaluations after being substituted in the first half of the match.
Although surgery is expected, Guardiola mentioned that no definitive decision has been made regarding the specific procedure.
According to ESPN sources, Rodri’s recovery time could range from five to eight months, depending on the final assessment by the medical team.
Despite the severity of the situation, Guardiola remains hopeful that Rodri’s recovery may be quicker than initially feared.
“Still we don’t have the definitive [answer],” Guardiola said at a news conference on Tuesday.
“He will be out for a long time. But there are some opinions that it will be less than we expect. Right now I cannot tell you. We are waiting for the last phone calls and the type of surgery he needs. Tonight or tomorrow we know.”
Rodri’s extended time away from the pitch poses a significant challenge for Manchester City as they pursue their fifth consecutive Premier League title.
Since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019, he has become an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s team and played a crucial role in Spain’s triumph at the European Championship this past summer.
At 28 years old, Rodri is also considered a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or, competing with Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior for the prestigious award.
“I trust a lot in my players. I have a duty to find a solution. He’s irreplaceable, when you don’t play with the best player in the world. My duty is to find a solution, be competitive like many years, and continue to be there.”
Guardiola was speaking after City booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win over Championship side Watford.
Kylian Mbappéis set to be sidelined for three weeks due to a thigh injury, according to a source who spoke to ESPN. This means the star forward will miss Real Madrid’s upcoming derby against Atlético Madrid this weekend.
Mbappé was taken off in the 80th minute during Madrid’s 3-2 La Liga victory over Alavés at the Bernabéu, after previously scoring twice to give his team a 2-0 lead.
He signalled discomfort in his left leg, prompting his substitution.
Following the match, coach Carlo Ancelotti referred to the issue as a “knock,” explaining that Mbappé had requested to be taken off to prevent further complications.
However, on Wednesday, Madrid confirmed the extent of the French international’s injury.
“Following the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the femoral biceps of his left leg,” the club said.
According to a source speaking to ESPN, Kylian Mbappé is expected to be sidelined for three weeks due to injury, ruling him out of key fixtures including a Champions League clash against Lille, a La Liga showdown with Villarreal, and France’s upcoming international break.
As Real Madrid gear up for their derby against Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday, they sit second in La Liga with 17 points from seven matches, just behind leaders Barcelona.
Atlético, with 12 points from six matches, will face Celta Vigo on Thursday before the highly anticipated derby.
Mbappé’s performances have been steadily improving this season, having netted five goals in La Liga, with his most impressive strike coming in a match against Alavés.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, has announced that the government has allocated more than $2.5 million to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to improve the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence (GSCE) in Prampram.
This funding is designated for the construction of a hotel that will serve as accommodation for national teams during their engagements.
During his appearance before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Culture, and Tourism, led by Wisdom Kobena Woyome, the Sports Minister emphasised that the Ministry will closely oversee how the funds are utilised to ensure they are spent as intended by the GFA.
“In 2022, when the prize money came [from the World Cup], a portion of it that we spent—about $5 million—was taken by the government to finance our participation in AFCON, and $2.8 million has been given to the FA to improve the facilities and build a hotel at Prampram,” Hon. Mustapha Ussif explained to the committee.
He further added, “As we speak, at the last Congress of the FA, which was just about two weeks ago,the FA officially broke ground to construct a hotel facility for our national teams at Prampram.
TheMinistryis overseeing the allocation to ensure the funds are used for their designated purpose.
This effort aims to enhance the nation’s sports infrastructure by offering upgraded facilities for the national teams, thereby easing some of the logistical difficulties they currently encounter.
Pep Guardiola has made it clear that Manchester City will prioritize the Premier League and Champions League over the Carabao Cup this season, choosing not to expend unnecessary energy on the domestic cup competition.
Despite securing a 2-1 victory over Championship side Watford in the third round on Tuesday, Guardiola revealed plans to use his reserve players in future Carabao Cup matches, citing a congested schedule.
“In the next round, I can tell you now, we’ll play the second team. We’re not going to waste our energy on this competition,” he confirmed.
While Guardiola had taken the Carabao Cup seriously in previous years, winning it four consecutive times between 2018 and 2021, this season he’s shifting focus.
For the match against Watford, played just 48 hours after a 2-2 draw with Arsenal, he made nine changes to the lineup, giving young prospects such as 16-year-old Kaden Braithwaite and 19-year-old Nico O’Reilly their competitive debuts.
“The schedule is the schedule; we cannot handle it anyway,” Guardiola said. “Today for [James] McAtee, Matheus [Nunes], Jack [Grealish], Phil [Foden], who didn’t play [against Arsenal], the young lad, 16 years old, it’s perfect.
;”That’s why it’s a good competition, otherwise, we wouldn’t win four in a row.”
Erling Haaland was given the night off against Watford, while key players like Éderson, Rúben Dias and Bernardo Silva were named on the bench.
Guardiola insisted he still wants to win theCarabao Cup, but hinted that he will continue to leave out his first-team regulars as they chase a fifth successive Premier League title.
“We play to go through,” he added. “We never throw a competition. Never. But we played 50 hours ago. I’m not going to [take] a risk with the Premier League and the Champions League in this competition.”
Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a journalist and assistant to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, has expressed concerns that Asamoah Gyan’s resignation from the party may be a significant factor that could jeopardise the NPP’s chances in the 2024 elections.
Asiedu, deeply saddened by Gyan’s departure, suspects there may be underlying issues within the party that led to the former football star’s exit. He mentioned that Gyan had previously shown remarkable dedication and passion, making his withdrawal from the campaign a surprising move.
Asiedu also cautioned that unless internal matters are resolved, the NPP may find itself in opposition after the next election.
“I feel within me that someone has done something bad to Asamoah Gyan. The energy and passion with which Asamoah Gyan embraced his position as a member of the youth and sports committee of the manifesto, there is no way he would have resigned if he had not been treated badly. No one is talking about it because we think when we do that, it will cost us the elections,” he said.
Oheneba Asiedu cautioned appointees of the government not to live under the impression that they will be protected by their friends in the NDC should power get into their hands.
“The party is the one that is going to suffer from these actions. They are making the elections difficult for us. There are people in this government who think they have made a lot of friends in the NDC, so should we lose to them and the NDC comes to power, they will be protected. I want to tell them that if the NDC comes to power, it wouldn’t take more than one week for them to regret their actions,” he said.
In an announcement shared on his social media platforms on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Asamoah Gyan revealed that moving forward, he will focus on his role as a former footballer and philanthropist.
Although Gyan did not specify the reasons behind this decision, he assured his followers that he remains dedicated to the growth and empowerment of Ghana’s youth. He pledged to continue spearheading initiatives aimed at their development.
“I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth, I am not affiliated with any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political. I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on the 7th of December. God bless our homeland Ghana. Thank you,” the caption of the statement reads.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has called for trust regarding his decision to bench Marcus Rashford for Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace.
Ahead of the match, Ten Hag had praised the England forward’s recent form, noting Rashford’s return to top performance after regaining control of his career, with three goals in his last two games.
However, in a surprising move, the Dutchman opted to start Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo instead, leaving Rashford on the bench. The 26-year-old eventually came on to replace Joshua Zirkzee after an hour of play.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp claimed “there’s obviously something that’s happened” for Ten Hag to leave Rashford out.
That theory was rejected as “crazy” after the game, with Ten Hag saying he was just rotating his squad, adding: “As a person you are not OK when you bring such speculation if you don’t know what’s going on.”
Earlier this week on the Rest is Football podcast, host Gary Lineker and former England striker Alan Shearer also questioned Ten Hag’s decision., external
Asked about the future around Rashford, before Ten Hag’s side’s opening Europa League game against his boyhood club FC Twente, he said on Tuesday: “I didn’t understand the criticism. People are not entitled to bring speculation.
“If I give an explanation they have to trust my words. If they don’t,that’s not right.”
A total of 39 protesters have been remanded in custody by a court in Accra following their involvement in a demonstration organised by the pressure groupDemocracy Hub.
The first 10 protesters from the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration were remanded after appearing in court today. The group, consisting of about 39 individuals, was transported in separate buses under heavy police security.
In court, the demonstrators faced charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, specifically unlawful assembly. Reports indicate that the first batch of 12 protesters pleaded not guilty.
Of these, 10 have been remanded into police custody, and their case has been adjourned until October 8, 2024.
Another group of 9 individuals also pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, and offensive conduct for breaching the peace.
They have also been remanded and will reappear in court on October 8.
Among those remanded is a fresh graduate currently completing his National Service.
The third batch of 11 protesters appeared in court as the 19 individuals already remanded were sent back to police custody. This latest group has been remanded into prison custody, with their case also adjourned to October 8.
In a separate courtroom, another group of 9 protesters was remanded into police custody, with their case adjourned to October 11. Meanwhile, a bench warrant has been issued for one individual who failed to appear in court.
Oliver Baker-Vormawor, the convenor of the #FixTheCountry movement, is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

The Board Chairman of theEngineering Council of Ghana, Ing. Dr. Kwame Boakye, has expressed that Ghanaian engineers do not receive enough recognition for their contributions.
He emphasised that local engineers are highly skilled, stating their expertise is “second to none.”
Despite the challenges facing the sector, Dr. Boakye noted that engineers consistently deliver their best efforts. He made these remarks during the Engineering Council’s breakfast meeting held in Accra on September 24.
Dr. Boakye further explained that many of the issues with architectural and infrastructure projects in the country are due to a poor maintenance culture, not a lack of professionalism among engineers.
“Generally, we tend to hear of engineers only when something goes wrong. Part of this is because we haven’t exposed the general public to the workings of engineering. Engineers do a lot that, as a nation, we haven’t given them enough credit.”
“Take power generation, for example: VRA is run by Ghanaian engineers; ECG, Ghana Water, though not perfect, demonstrate professionalism in their work. The capacity of Ghanaian engineers is second to none,” he added.
Dr. Kwame Boakye also highlighted that minimal to no budget is allocated for the maintenance of infrastructure projects, resulting in the deteriorating condition of many facilities across Ghana.
“How many politicians have said they helped to maintain 100 miles of road? They talk about the new roads they’ve built.” He added, “We don’t have enough engineering professionals at the governance level; they take orders, and that has to change.”
On his part, Deputy Minister for Works and Housing,Dr. Prince Hamid Armah, who represented the sector minister as the special guest of honor, assured that the government is working to ensure that the engineering sector upholds its standards.
Technical University Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana(TUSAAG) has threatened to initiate a nationwide strike by the end of September 2024 if their demands are not met.
In a statement released on September 8, 2024, TUSAAG voiced their frustration with the government’s failure to uphold the terms of their collective bargaining agreement, despite several assurances.
The Association accused the government of infringing on their rights by refusing to implement revised allowances for senior members of public universities, as instructed by the Ministry of Finance in May 2024.
TUSAAG also pointed out that an addendum to the collective bargaining agreement, signed in July 2024, has not yet been enforced.
The Association further claimed there is discrimination in the payment of common allowances owed to unions representing similar categories of workers at public universities.
They are demanding the immediate payment of the agreed-upon rates for vehicle maintenance, off-campus accommodation, fuel, utility, and sanitation/security allowances.
TUSAAG has warned that they will embark on a nationwide strike if these payments are not reflected in the September 2024 salary validation.
Flagbearer of the People’s National Convention, Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, has filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission (EC) following his disqualification from the presidential race for the upcoming December elections. Mornah was one of 11 presidential candidates who faced disqualification.
The EC stated that these candidates were barred from participating in the December 7, 2024, elections because they did not rectify errors on their nomination forms.
EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, explained, “Mr Bernard Mornah also had incomplete details of supporters. He also used registered voters in a particular district to support the nomination in other districts.
His form also contained varying signatures for the same supporters and in some cases the same signature for different supporters. The committee was of the view that he be disqualified.”
But Mr Mornah argues that his disqualification is a breach of his rights, was illegal and failed to comply with due process requirements imposed by law.
He is therefore demanding “An order of mandamus compelling the 2nd respondent to declare the 1st applicant as duly nominated to contest the 2024 public presidential elections.”
“An order restraining the 1st and 2nd respondents from printing the presidential ballot papers or carrying on with the December 7, 2024 Public Presidential Elections until 1st Applicant is declared duly nominated candidate of the 2nd applicant and allowed to contest the said elections.”
Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori has arrived in South Africa to finalise a move toPremier Soccer League (PSL) side AmaZulu as a free agent.
Ofori, who left the Orlando Pirates after his contract expired in June 2024, has spent the summer training independently in preparation for his next challenge.
The 30-year-old has been a key figure in South African football since 2018, starting with Maritzburg United, where he quickly established himself as one of the league’s top goalkeepers.
His standout performances at Maritzburg earned him a transfer to the Orlando Pirates, one of the most prestigious clubs in South Africa.
During his time with the Pirates, Ofori played a crucial role in their MTN 8 Cup victory, helping secure a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in the final, which ended the club’s six-year trophy drought.
Over his career with both Maritzburg and Pirates, Ofori made over 100 appearances. He now begins a new chapter with AmaZulu, a club aiming to improve on their 11th-place finish last season and qualify for the MTN 8 competition by securing a top-eight spot.
With 33 international caps for Ghana, Ofori brings valuable experience to AmaZulu.
He hopes to help the club replicate their successful 2021/22 season, when they finished as MTN 8 runners-up and reached the CAF Champions League group stages.
Ofori’s most recent appearance for Ghana came at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nationsin a match against Mozambique.
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has called Erling Haaland’s actions a “coward’s move” after the Manchester City forward threw the ball at the back of Gabriel’s head following City’s late equaliser against Arsenal.
After John Stones’ goal, Haaland retrieved the ball from the net and threw it at Gabriel, who had his shirt over his head in frustration and was facing the other way.
Although the Video Assistant Referee reviewed the incident, it was not considered a red card offence, and no further action was taken.
The Football Association has confirmed that no additional action will be taken regarding any incidents during the 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium, including a heated exchange between players at the final whistle.
“The one thing that boiled me up properly was Haaland’s coward’s move,” Wright said in a video on Instagram.
“Throwing the ball at Gabi’s head when he’s not looking. When Gabi’s back’s turned to him. Real coward’s move. Gabi would look him in the eye, you know.
“That’s what bothered me more than anything else. I thought you [Haaland] were bigger than that.”
Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori scored to overturn Erling Haaland’s early opener at the Etihad Stadium, but Arsenal’s momentum took a hit when Leandro Trossard was sent off just before halftime.
Despite being down to 10 men, Mikel Arteta’s side defended resolutely in the second half, only to be denied a win when John Stones netted an equaliser in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
The draw leaves Manchester City one point ahead at the top of the Premier League, with Arsenal sitting two points behind in fourth place.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta defended his team’s tactics in their 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Sunday, calling them “normal.”
The Gunners conceded a 98th-minute equaliser at the Etihad Stadium after being reduced to 10 men when Leandro Trossard was sent off in stoppage time of the first half.
Arsenal faced criticism for time-wasting, with City players John Stones and Kyle Walker accusing them of using “dark arts” to protect their 2-1 lead.
However, Arteta argued that his team had no choice but to defend deeply due to City’s numerical advantage, pointing to a moment earlier in the match when Guardiola’s side was temporarily down to 10 men following Rodri’s injury.
“Well, we had to play the game that we had to play. The first 15 minutes, we couldn’t. They [City] played 30 seconds with 10 men. Look what they did. It’s normal what they did,” said Arteta.
“Unfortunately we’ve been in the same situation. We were in that same situation with Granit [Xhaka] when we lost 5-0 [in 2021]. So we’d better learn. If not, I would be very thick.”
David Raya, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, and Gabriel Martinelli all went down with cramps during the second half at the Etihad, leading to accusations of time-wasting.
Yussif Basigi has officially parted ways with Hasaacas Ladies after 21 years.
The 52-year-old coach is set to take on a new challenge with Tanzanian club Simba Queens, signing a one-year contract.

As Hasaacas Ladies compete in the 2024 Women’s Premier Super Cup, assistant coach Mabel Baffoe Eshun has stepped in as interim head coach.
Basigi recently returned from coaching Ghana’s Black Princessesat the 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has expressed disappointment in the National Sports Authority (NSA) for “neglecting their duties” by renting out the Baba Yara Stadium just weeks before Ghana’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
In July, the stadium was leased for a five-day ‘Kumuyi’ Church program, which left the pitch in poor condition.
The Black Stars went on to lose 1-0 to Angola in their opening qualifier at the venue, with the poor state of the pitch becoming a major issue.
As a result, CAF revoked the stadium’s licence to host international matches, raising the possibility that Ghana may have to play its next home match abroad.
“Of course, [the NSA failed in its duty] by its singular decision to rent the Kumasi Stadium for that program just before the Angola match,” Ussif said.
Renting out national stadiums has become the NSA’s main source of revenue, but this practice has proven to be counterproductive, as the facilities are often left in poor condition afterward.
Meanwhile, the Sports Ministryreleased a statement, ‘directing’ the National Sports Authority, to “take steps to resolve issues with the pitch” at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Former President John Mahama has broken ground for the development of a state-of-the-art 500-seat sports complex in Bole-Bamboi, located in the Northern Region.
The project is a key part of Mahama’s broader efforts to improve sports infrastructure in the area and encourage youth participation in athletics.
Speaking at the event, Mahama highlighted the critical role that proper facilities play in advancing sports, emphasizing their importance in cultivating talent and building strong community ties.
Mr. Mahama highlighted that the newly built sports facility will serve as a centre for various sporting activities, encouraging local youth to participate in healthy competitions and recreational activities.
He stressed that investing in sports not only enhances physical fitness but also fosters community development by promoting unity and teamwork.
The former president expressed his hope that the facility would inspire young athletes and provide them with opportunities to showcase their talents.
In addition, Mr. Mahama pledged to implement policies aimed at promoting inclusive growth in sectors such as education, health, and infrastructure. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that development projects benefit all segments of society, particularly marginalized communities.
“I cut the sod for the construction of a 500-seater modern sports facility for the youth and people of my home constituency, Bole-Bamboi, and its surrounding communities on Sunday.”
“Facilitated by my younger brother, the Member of Parliament for Bole, Alhaji Yusif Suleman, the facility will contain a football pitch with changing rooms, volleyball and tennis courts, and a swimming pool.”
“When completed, this will surely be an excellent opportunity to provide the youth with an avenue to develop their sporting skills and talents, keep them healthy, and create entertainment opportunities through the various games and activities in the complex.
The construction of the sports facility in Bole-Bamboi is regarded as a major milestone in improving the region’s sports infrastructure and strengthening community bonds.
Residents have welcomed the project with enthusiasm, recognising it as a valuable addition that will greatly benefit the youth and positively influence the entire community.
At least 30 decomposing bodies have been found on a boat off the coast of Senegal, militaryauthorities say.
The navy was informed of a vessel that was adrift about 70 km (45 miles) from the capital Dakar, according to a military statement on X. They brought the wooden canoe, or pirogue, into port on Monday morning.
“Recovery, identification, and transfer operations are being made extremely delicate by the advanced state of decomposition of the bodies,” the statement said.
There has been a noticeable rise in the number of migrants departing from Senegal in an attempt to reach Spain’s Canary Islands, a perilous 1,500 km (950-mile) voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.
Fishermen recently discovered severely decomposed bodies believed to be migrants who had been adrift for several days.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the boat’s departure, its point of origin, and how many people were onboard.
In a similar tragedy, 14 bodies, thought to be Senegalese migrants, were found off the coast of the Dominican Republic in August.
In response to the increasing migrant deaths, Senegal’s government introduced a 10-year strategy in August aimed at curbing illegal migration. Recently, authorities have intercepted numerous migrant boats along the country’s coastline.
Despite the persistent loss of life, many young men are driven by unemployment, poverty, and conflict to risk the dangerous journey from West Africa to the Canary Islands.
Some Senegalese fishermen, struggling to make a living due to foreign trawlers in their waters, have turned to migration or lent their boats to human traffickers.
For many West African migrants, the route to the Canary Islands has become an increasingly popular alternative to crossing the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea, though it remains extremely dangerous.
According to Frontex, the European border agency, the Atlantic route experienced a 161% increase in migrant crossings in 2023 compared to the previous year.
Around 40,000 migrants successfully reached the Canary Islands last year, while nearly 1,000 were reported dead or missing, though the true figure is expected to be significantly higher.
Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey marked his 100th appearance for Arsenal during a hard-fought draw against Manchester City on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
The 31-year-old midfielder played the full 90 minutes, helping his team secure a point before a late John Stones goal denied Arsenal victory.
Partey, who joined the Gunners from Atletico Madrid in 2020, has scored six goals and made three assists across his Arsenal career.
Notably, Partey’s debut also came against Manchester City at the Etihad, mirroring this milestone appearance.
He now reaches 300 league appearances overall, including his stints in La Liga.
Hearts of Oak coach, Aboubakar Ouattara, has urged fans to avoid harshly criticizing players, emphasizing that while feedback is welcome, it should be constructive.
He acknowledged the frustration felt by supporters due to the team’s recent poor performances in the Ghana Premier League but emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere.
Ouattara also stressed that the fans are the lifeblood of the club and that their support is crucial for the team’s morale and progress, even during tough times.
“We are working for them (supporters). I understand when they criticise us. You can criticise us and say anything you like, but please do not insult us,” he said after their win over Bechem United.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwnxczcqwkU
Ouattara called for unity in the team, which he believes is the only element to lift the team to the next level.
“What we need is unity. We need to stay together, and if that happens, I think we can achieve a lot,” he added.
Hearts of Oak bounced back with a solid 2-0 victory over Bechem United on Sunday, September 22, 2024, marking their first win of the season after two consecutive losses.
They now aim to build on this momentum when they meet Nations FC in their upcoming match on Saturday, September 28, as part of the fourth round of fixtures in the league.
Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote expressed regret over missing the chance to purchase Arsenal when the club was valued at around $2 billion.
In an interview with Bloomberg’s Francine Lacqua in New York, Dangote shared that his focus on funding his refinery project prevented him from seizing the opportunity to invest in the London-based football club at the time.
He now reflects on the decision as a missed opportunity, given the rise in Arsenal’s value since then.
He said, “I think that time has passed. The last time we had this interview, I told you as soon as I finish with the refinery, I am going to try and buy Arsenal.
“But you know everything has gone up and the club too is doing very well; Arsenal is doing extremely well right now. That time Arsenal wasn’t doing well.
“I think I don’t have that kind of excess liquidity to go and buy a club for $4 billion so to speak and use it as a promotional something.
“But what I will do is to continually be the biggest fan of Arsenal. I watch their games anytime they are playing. So, I will remain a major supporter of Arsenal but I don’t think it makes sense today to buy Arsenal.’
When asked if he regretted not buying when Arsenal’s value was lower, he said, “Actually, I regret not buying it before but you know my money was more needed in completing my project (Dangote refinery) than buying Arsenal.
I would have bought the club for $2 billion but you know I wouldn’t have been able to finish my project. So, It was either I finish my project or go and buy Arsenal.”
In 2020, Aliko Dangote revealed his ambition to acquire Arsenal Football Club once his refinery project was complete. As West Africa’s largest business mogul, he established the Dangote Group in 1981, building it into a regional powerhouse.
Renowned as the wealthiest individual in Africa, Dangote has long expressed interest in owning the North London club, which has grown in value over the years.
Ghanaian talentsDavid Oduro and Abdul Aziz Issahare once again missing from Barcelona B’s lineup for their upcoming clash against Zamora CF in Spain’s third division this Saturday evening.
Since their official introduction by the Catalan club, neither player has made an appearance, and the reason behind their ongoing absence remains undisclosed.
There are speculations that unresolved work permit issues might be delaying their eligibility to play.
Oduro, a left-back, was signed by Barcelona from Accra Lions, while Issah made the move from Dreams FC.
Earlier this year, Oduro participated in trials with the Spanish side before securing a three-year deal with Barca Atletic.
Issah, meanwhile, made headlines with his stellar performance last season, playing a key role in Dreams FC’s progress to the CAF Confederations Cup semi-finals.
The 18-year-old topped the scoring charts in the tournament, netting four goals and providing two assists across 10 matches.
Amid the persistent concerns regarding illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana, a related issue has emerged that warrants immediate and serious attention.
A chief from Trabuom Nwineso No. 1 in the Atwima Kwanwoma District, Ashanti Region, has raised alarm over a horrifying practice linked to galamsey operations.
He claims that illegal miners are engaging in child sacrifice as part of ritual activities before commencing their work.
Speaking to Okaatakyie Afrifa Mensah on AngelFM, the chief revealed that over seven children have allegedly been sacrificed for these rituals, a matter that has been brought to his notice.
“More than seven children have been sacrificed for galamsey. All these cases have been reported to me,” he stated, adding that he has evidence to support these claims.
In March 2023, a former illegal miner revealed a similarly disturbing practice, describing how galamsey operators sacrifice newborns in mining pits as part of rituals meant to help them find gold and other minerals.
During an interview on the same media platform, the retired miner shared that some galamseyers in Obuasi purchase infants from hospitals, spilling their blood underground to summon the earth’s resources.
In addition to sacrificing newborns, he claimed that miners sometimes collaborate to sacrifice one of their own to uncover gold deposits.
At the same time, the Assemblyman for Nwineso No. 1 raised alarms about people falling into abandoned galamsey pits and disappearing, while others have drowned in water-filled pits left unsealed.
He stated, “We are urging the government to help us cover these pits to prevent such incidents.”
Democracy Hub has responded to the Ghana Police Service’s recent press release concerning their ongoing protest, strongly rejecting the claims made by the police.
The group refuted the description of their protest as “unGhanaian, uncivil, and unlawful,” arguing that their actions are in full accordance with their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
In their statement, Democracy Hub expressed concern over the contradiction in the police’s stance, noting that while the authorities claim to protect public safety, they have allegedly resorted to using excessive force and intimidation against peaceful demonstrators.
The organisers denied any involvement in violence or illegal activities, emphasising that protestors were repeatedly reminded to maintain a non-violent stance throughout the demonstration.
Additionally, they accused the police of working with New Patriotic Party (NPP)-aligned groups to intimidate protestors, calling for accountability over these alleged actions.
Democracy Hub called for meaningful dialogue with the police while reaffirming their dedication to peaceful protests and urged Ghanaians to join their cause for justice.
In Ghana, it’s uncommon for traditional leaders, particularly paramount chiefs,to express emotions openly, as doing so is often perceived as a weakness.
An unspoken expectation is that these leaders should maintain composure, regardless of the circumstances.
However, there are instances when prominent chiefs have broken this tradition, showing vulnerability in public while being discreetly supported by their followers.
For example, Nana Akwasi Bosompra, the Paramount Chief of Goaso, nearly cried during a public address in November 2023, expressing his frustration over the lack of progress in his communities, but his aides quickly intervened to shield him.
Similarly, the revered Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was supported by his subjects when he became visibly emotional at a durbar held by the Ga State, ensuring that his tears remained unseen by the public.
A video shared by Banadahene TV on X, shared by the Asante Nation, has shown that Asantehene is indeed human. The King of Asanteman can be seen shedding tears in the video.
According to Asante Nation, the event where theOtumfuo was captured shedding tears was the burial of his mother, the late Asantehemaa Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem.
“He is human. As human as he is, the day grief shadowed his soul, he shed a tear as a human being would. The night his mother, his first love, Asantehemaa Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem, was laid in state. Emotions make us all human,” the video caption read.
New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has emphasised the crucial impact that students have on the future of Ghana.
Speaking at the 58th National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Annual Residential Congress with the theme “Depoliticising Education and Upholding Integrity:
The Role of Students and Stakeholders for National Development,” Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, emphasised that NUGS leadership should prioritise serving members over personal or partisan interests.
“NUGS should not be used for personal gain or advancing personal or partisan goals,” he stated.
As a former president of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) at KNUST, he commended the organisation’s longstanding engagement in national matters.
He urged students to offer thoughtful critiques of government policies while backing initiatives that bring about positive change.
The former Minister of Education also emphasised the importance of student involvement in the upcoming 2024 general elections, noting how the results will influence their future.
“I firmly believe that under a Dr. Bawumia presidency, the NPP offers the students of this country the best opportunities to achieve their full potential in the 21st century.”
Additionally, the Manhyia South MP urgedNUGS leaders to promote critical thinking and engagement among Gen Z voters, ensuring their voices are heard and helping shape the country’s future direction.
Participants at a day’s NationalCSOs Dialogue on Enhancing Excise Taxation in Ghana have called for an upward adjustment of the excise taxes on tobacco products, alcoholic and sugar-sweetened beverages to help prevent diseases and increase revenue generation.
The dialogue was on the theme “Enhancing Excise Taxation for Public Health Protection and Revenue Mobilisation.”
The event was designed to educate civil society organisation (CSO) advocates and experts on the benefits of excise taxes, particularly their positive effects on the nation’s health and wealth.
The goal was to gather support to strengthen and maintain the progress made, especially regarding taxes on health-harming products.
Additionally, it sought to explore opportunities for increasing public awareness and understanding of excise taxes, while clarifying the distinction between these taxes and other forms of taxation.
This clarification is crucial, as harmful product industries have often misrepresented excise taxes to gain public sympathy.
The event was co-organised by Revenue Mobilisation Africa, Vision for Alternative Development – Ghana (VALD), and the CSOs Budget Forum, with funding from the Tax Justice Network Africa.
During a presentation, Mr. Richard Ameevor, a consultant, stated, explained that excise duty (or excise tax) is a a tax levied on the production, sale, or consumption of specific products, such as alcoholic beverages, tobacco, sugar-sweetened drinks, petroleum products, and luxury items.
“It is also imposed on imported products to compensate for the internal levy on goods of like nature,” he said.
Mr. Ameevor pointed out that excise tax is a single stage tax, and it is paid once either by the manufacturer or importer when the goods are removed, loaded onto a conveyance at the factory gate in Ghana or at the point of entry.
“Unlike general sales taxes or VAT (Value Added Tax),which are broad-based and apply to most goods and services, excise taxes are indirect taxes targeted at particular products (often regarded as non-essential or harmful to health and the environment),” he said.
He stated that the purpose of excise taxation is for revenue generation and health promotion (and social policy), and that they are crucial to government to finance public services like healthcare, education among others.
“They are designed to discourage the consumption of harmful goods, thereby reducing the prevalence of health issues like smoking-related diseases, alcoholism, and obesity,” the consultant said.
He stated: “It works on the principle of price elasticity – as the price of a product increases, demand generally decreases. Also support social policy goals such reducing environmental pollution by taxing fuel among others.”
Mr. Ameevor highlighted that excise taxes are in line with global initiatives aimed at reducing harmful consumption patterns and align with ECOWAS protocols, which mandate the application of both ad valorem and specific duties on tobacco products.
He acknowledged the challenges in implementing such taxes but emphasized that excise taxation presents a promising route to promoting both public health and economic stability in Ghana. He urged for stronger enforcement of the laws governing these taxes to maximize their impact.
“The taxes must be balanced to achieve the dual goals of revenue generation and public health promotion, and that the revenue should be used to fund public education on the harms of alcohol, tobacco, and sugar-sweetened beverage consumptions.”
Mr. Labram Musah,Executive Director of Programmes of VALD presented the overview of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and stressed Article six; “Price and Tax measures to reduce the demand for tobacco – (increase tax and price).
He said the article addresses the use of price and tax measures as effective tools for reducing tobacco consumption.
“These fiscal policies aim to discourage the uptake and continuation of tobacco use, particularly among vulnerable populations such as youth and low-income groups,” he stated, and that; “Higher tobacco taxes lead to increased prices, making tobacco products less affordable, thereby reducing demand.”
The article also emphasizes the importance of using revenues from tobacco taxes to fund health programmes and tobacco control initiatives.
Mr. Musah said: “Countries are encouraged to adopt evidence-based tax policies, ensure transparency in the use of revenues, and align these measures with their broader public health goals to achieve sustainable reductions in tobacco use.”

Dubois dominated from the outset, knocking down the two-time world champion three times to claim the IBF heavyweight crown.
In the first round, a powerful right hand sent Joshua to the canvas just before the bell.
Joshua never fully recovered, struggling through the remaining rounds.
The second round saw Dubois take full control, overwhelming Joshua, who was unable to handle the relentless pressure.
In the third round, Dubois landed a sharp left jab that left Joshua staggering.
A follow-up barrage sent him down again. Although Joshua seemed to find some rhythm in the fifth round, Dubois landed a decisive right hook, sealing the victory.
The fight drew an astonishing 96,000 fans toWembley Stadium, setting one of the largest crowds ever for a sporting event in the UK.
National Peace Councilhas called on political parties to take responsibility for restoring public confidence in political institutions and leadership.
According to the Council, parties can rebuild trust by prioritising transparency, integrity, unity, and responsible conduct.
Speaking at the National Dialogue on Peace Beyond Election 2024 on Saturday, September 21, Executive Secretary George Amoh emphasised that political parties must ensure fair elections, respect democratic processes, and prioritise the well-being of citizens.
These efforts, he noted, will help strengthen public faith in the political system.
Amoh also highlighted the crucial role of the Electoral Commission (EC) in addressing these trust issues.
“The posture we put up sometimes—if your words do not go with your body language, it will create some doubts in the minds of the people,” he said.
Regarding the issue with the voters’ register, Mr Amoh said that the Council has engaged both the EC and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and an agreeable solution will be found to resolve the matter.
“We are working not behind the scenes; we intend to come out latest by Monday, looking at the variables.
We are, of course, our leaders; we believe that they have good intentions for our country; what we need to do is create an environment for them to help shape our country to the Ghana we all want,” he added.
A widow battling illness has sought refuge with a Ghanaian pastor to confess her involvement in a tragic situation that led to the deaths of her husband, a military officer, and his colleague due to her infidelity.
Enyonam revealed that while her husband was away on a peacekeeping mission for over a year, she struggled to control her sexual desires and began an affair with another officer who lived in the barracks.
Seeking solace on Prophet Prince Elisha Osei Kofi’s confession show, she explained that after her husband’s return, she was too fearful to perform her marital duties, as her infidelity conflicted with a vow tied to their marriage.
In Ewe tradition, a wife who engages in extramarital affairs can cause harm to her husband if she cooks for him or engages in sexual relations. This could lead to sickness or even insanity.
According to Enyonam, her actions tragically resulted in her husband’s death and that of his colleague.
“I came here because I sinned against my husband, a soldier. He travelled for one year on a peacekeeping mission, and I slept with someone else who was also a soldier in the barracks.
So, when he came back, I was afraid to tell him because I am an Ewe, and before we marry, they give us a stool to sit on as a vow to remain faithful to our husbands,” she said.
Gripped with fear of losing her husband, she resorted to her sister cooking for her husband while he was at work. Upon his return, he ate the food without knowing who prepared it, and she also refused sexual encounters with him.
“I wanted to tell him and plead, but I couldn’t, so I kept quiet. And because of that, I couldn’t cook for him or have sex with him because if I did, he would go mad or fall sick. So, I resorted to one of my sisters to cook for him,” she narrated.
Enyonam further shared that after mustering the courage to confide in a friend about her infidelity and the potential consequences tied to the vow, her friend dismissed the traditional belief. The friend argued that it was nothing more than a superstition designed to discourage infidelity, and there was no real danger.
Reassured by this, Enyonam resumed her normal duties as a wife, including engaging in sexual relations with her husband. Tragically, soon after, her husband fell ill. Despite numerous attempts to save him, moving from one hospital to another, he eventually passed away.
“I told one of my friends about the situation and, per our culture, the consequence, but she said it is an African belief, so I shouldn’t be African, and I went ahead to perform my marital duties.
“He later fell sick, and we went to most hospitals, but he couldn’t survive and died.”
After her husband’s funeral, Enyonam rekindled her affair with the soldier she had been involved with during her husband’s absence. However, shortly after, the soldier also fell ill and eventually passed away.
Now, consumed with fear and experiencing similar symptoms to those that claimed the lives of her husband and the other officer, Enyonam has sought out the pastor, seeking refuge and confessing her actions in hopes of finding relief.
“After his funeral, I continued my affair with the soldier. I dreamt one day and saw my husband playing football with him, and my boyfriend booted my husband in the dream and got a red card.
“Later, he also fell sick and died. Now I am also sick, and I’m scared. I don’t know if my boyfriend’s wife is behind my illness or if it is a result of my actions because she once warned me about her husband,” she added.
Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, has refuted allegations made against him by the National Security Ministry in its recent statement.
In the statement, National Security dismissed claims allegedly made by Abronye DC during an interview on Wontumi TV, where he was said to have accused the leadership of Organised Labour of demanding a bribe to call off a planned strike.
The ministry described these allegations as “baseless and unfounded,” stating that no financial demands were made during its engagement with Organised Labour.
It urged the public to disregard such claims.
However, in a rejoinder, Abronye sought to set the record straight, emphasising that he never made such allegations during his conversation with Wontumi TV.
He denied implicating the leadership of Organised Labour, clarifying that the individual he referred to was the Deputy Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah.
According to Abronye, Ansah demanded a substantial sum of five million Ghana Cedis (GHC 5 million) from certain members of the ruling NPP to prevent Organised Labour from staging demonstrations against the government.
He further claimed that, upon the refusal of this demand, Joshua Ansah developed a personal dislike for the party, leading him to allegedly attempt to tarnish the NPP’s reputation.
“In the said interview, I made an emphatic and true statement that, Joshua Ansah (in person) and not the leadership of Organised Labour demanded five million Ghana cedis from some members of the New Patriotic Party in order to curtail Organised Labour demonstrations against the Government and the Party since we are in an election year.
I continued by stating that, because that request was turned down, Joshua Ansah has developed some form of hatred against the NPP government and therefore has decided to make the NPP government unpopular…” he noted.
Abronye also expressed disappointment with the National Security Ministry’s “knee-jerk reaction” in issuing a response without first verifying the accuracy of the claims.
He suggested that the ministry should have reviewed the recordings of the interview to confirm the truth before making any public statements.
“As a respected Ministry, I suggest the Minister should have called for the recordings of the said interview to ascertain the veracity, or accuracy of the false complaint lodged by the corrupt General Secretary of the Organised Labour,” he added.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have raised concerns that the mpox outbreak across the continent remains uncontrolled, with infections still rising in several nations.
Following the identification of a new variant, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
African countries are grappling with this latest health crisis, coming so soon after the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed significant weaknesses in the region’s healthcare systems.
According to Africa CDC data, mpox cases have surged by 177%, while deaths have risen by 38.5% compared to the same time last year.
“We can say today that mpox is not under control in Africa. We still have this increase of cases that is worrying for all of us,” Jean Kaseya, director general of Africa CDC, told a weekly briefing on the outbreak.
In one week 2,912 new cases were reported compared with the previous week including a new country, Morocco, where a case was reported, confirming the spread of the disease in all four regions of the continent.
So far, 15 of the 55 member states of the African Union have reported cases, Africa CDC said.
“We still have people dying frommpox in Africa. In one week, we lost 14 people,” Kaseya added.
He noted that in countries like Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo, two different strains of the disease were circulating. However, due to inadequate surveillance and testing capabilities, it is unclear whether this is also happening in other nations.
Kaseya mentioned that Rwanda has already initiated its vaccination campaign, while the Democratic Republic of Congo, the outbreak’s epicentre, is expected to begin vaccinations in early October.
The incident took place early on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
David Osafo Adonteng, the Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NSRA), confirmed the details during an interview on Adom FM’s midday news.
According to Mr. Adonteng, the crash involved a VIP bus and a diesel fuel tanker that were moving in opposite directions.
He explained that the tanker, en route from Accra to Kumasi, experienced a tire blowout, causing it to drift into the lane of the oncoming VIP bus travelling from Tamale to Accra.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to rescue several passengers who were trapped.
Enzo Maresca has indicated that Chelsea plans to pursue additional signings next year to close the gap with Manchester City and Arsenal.
This summer, Chelsea was the top spender in the transfer market for the third time in four windows, investing £219 million.
Since the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium took control in May 2022, the club’s total spending has exceeded £1 billion.
Despite these investments, Maresca believes Chelsea is not yet in a position to challenge Manchester City and Arsenal, who currently hold the top two spots in the Premier League.
He said: “I think we are a very good squad, but there are clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal that are ahead of us, no doubt. Hopefully, if we progress and keep improving, we can slowly, slowly be close to them.
But I think it is quite clear that in this moment Arsenal and Manchester City are ahead of the rest.
“Like I have said, the reason why one club is nine years with the same manager (Pep Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016), the other (Mikel Arteta at Arsenal) is five years.
The rest of the clubs… is a short time.”
When asked if that meantChelsea needed to buy more players, he added: “The target after the last summer (window) is to try to do less things but more specific.
“This is the target for January and for next summer. Hopefully it can be like this.”
The United States Ambassador to Tanzania,on Thursday, Michael Battle, reaffirmed that the US remains committed to promoting democratic rights and principles as a fundamental part of its partnership with Tanzania.
This statement follows criticism from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who earlier this week accused the US Embassy of spearheading a condemnation of recent abductions and killings in the country, coinciding with the approach of local elections in November.
President Samia cautioned foreign nations against meddling in Tanzania’s internal matters, arguing that such actions violate the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
She emphasised the need for respect as Tanzania addresses the security concerns surrounding the rising incidents of abductions.
Although she did not name any mission in particular, the president singled out two recently reported assassination attempts on US presidential candidate Donald Trump as “proof” that incidents of pre-election violence were also prevalent in the West.
But, addressing a democracy conference in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, Mr. Battle acknowledged that the US was not “immune to challenges and imperfections” in maintaining democratic standards as it prepares for its own presidential election this year, but remained adamant that Washington’s support for Tanzania, which he said has so far resulted in about $7.5 billion in aid commitments over the years, would remain hinged on respect for democracy and human rights.
“As long as we remain Tanzania’s partner, we will always speak openly and honestly on these principles. We will not back away or hold back. It is an obligation fundamental and paramount to human dignity and human respect,” he said.
The US embassy in Dar es Salaam was the first to publicly condemn the shocking abduction and violent murder of Ali Mohamed Kibao, an official from the opposition Chadema party, which occurred two weeks prior.

Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the disqualification of several presidential hopefuls for the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024, due to their failure to amend inaccuracies in their nomination paperwork.
During a press conference held in Accra on Friday, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa detailed the situation. She noted that the candidates were given sufficient opportunity to correct the noted errors but did not comply with the necessary requirements.
Among those disqualified are Bernard Mornah from the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Janet Nabla of the People’s National Party (PNP).
Other candidates facing disqualification include Nana Stephens Adjepong, Paul Perkoh, James Kwesi Oppong, John Enyonam Kwakwu Kpikpi, Dr. Samuel Sampong Ankrah, and Nii Amu Darko.
Furthermore, candidates Samuel Apea-Danquah, Desmond Abrefah, and Kofi Asamoah Siaw from the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) were also removed from the electoral race.
The EC reiterated that the disqualification process adhered strictly to electoral guidelines, ensuring that the proceedings were conducted with integrity and transparency.
The EC Chairperson noted, for instance, that “Mr. Samuel Apea-Dankwa was presented with a number of issues to resolve, including not filing a tax certificate for his Vice Presidential candidate and then some of his pages from the form, and he had incomplete particulars for some of his supporters.
“Unfortunately, though he was provided with the opportunity to correct this, he was unable to do so and the committee recommended that he be disqualified.”
“Ms. Janet Asana Nabla also used the registration details of supporters in certain districts to support her nomination in other districts. Again, the Vice Presidential candidate did not sign the nomination form. The issues were however not resolved, and the committees recommended that she be disqualified.”
“…Mr Bernard Mornah also had incomplete details of supporters. He also used registered voters in a particular district to support the nomination in other districts. His form also contained varying signatures for the same supporters and, in some cases,, the same signature for different supporters. The committee was of the view that he be disqualified.”
Chief Executive Officer of AC Zenon Limited, Hajia Amina Tahiru, has refuted claims that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, is her relative.
The Akyem Asuom Kontihene, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, alleged that Hajia Tahiru was a relative of Jinapor and has refused to comply with the community’s demands to stop operations and reclaim damaged lands.
Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Point Blank on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday, Hajia Tahiru noted,
“I don’t even know how I was even linked to the minister of lands and natural resources. I am not related to him, at all in no way. I am not from his constituency, that is the irony. I am a Gonja but I am not his relative.
“That is where all the lies are coming from. Yes, I am a Gonja by birth. I am also a Dagomba by birth; those are my identities, and I am very proud to be a Gonja and a Dagomba at the same time, but in no way am I related to Abu Jinapor.”
