Italy legend Salvatore Schillaci passes away at 59

Salvatore “Toto” Schillaci, the former Italy forward renowned for his performance in the 1990 World Cup, has passed away at the age of 59.

The Palermo hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for colon cancer, confirmed his death in a statement on Wednesday.

Schillaci gained international acclaim during the 1990 World Cup held in Italy, where he made a significant impact by scoring six goals and earning the tournament’s golden boot.

Despite Italy’s third-place finish, Schillaci’s outstanding individual contributions were recognized as he was awarded the golden ball for being the best player of the tournament, surpassing notable figures such as Lothar Matthäus and Diego Maradona.

“A football icon is leaving us, a man who has entered the hearts of Italians and sports fans around the world,” Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni posted on X.

“Salvatore Schillaci, known by everyone as Toto, the striker from the magic nights of Italia ’90 with our national team. Thanks for the emotions you gave us, for having made us dream, celebrate, embrace, and wave our national flag. Bon voyage, champion.”

Schillaci later added just one more goal to his international tally, which came against Norway the following year.

Hailing from Palermo, Schillaci also had a successful club career in Italy, with significant achievements at Juventus and Inter Milan.

“Palermo FC, with President Dario Mirri and the entire City Football Group family, express their deepest condolences for the premature passing of Salvatore Schillaci and join in the grief of Francesco Di Mariano’s family,” Palermo said in a statement.

During his club career, Schillaci secured a UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia with Juventus and later claimed another UEFA Cup with Inter Milan.

He concluded his playing days in Japan, where he achieved a J-League title with Jubilo Iwata in 1997.

In 2022, Schillaci was diagnosed with colon cancer and was hospitalized at Palermo Civico in early September.

“He made an entire nation dream during the Magic Nights of Italia ’90,” Inter said.

“FC Internazionale Milano gathers around the Schillaci family for the passing of Totò.”

Roma dismisses manager Daniele De Rossi after a series of winless games

AS Roma have dismissed head coach Daniele De Rossi following a winless start to the Serie A season.

The club announced the decision on Wednesday after the team failed to secure a victory in their first four league games.

De Rossi, a former Roma player who spent nearly 20 years with the club, took over as head coach in January following the departure of Jose Mourinho.

He had signed a contract extension through 2027 just this past June.

In a statement, Roma said, “Daniele De Rossi is no longer serving as head coach of the first team.

This decision is aimed at putting the team back on track as quickly as possible during the early part of the season.”

Roma drew 1-1 with Genoa over the weekend after conceding a late equaliser, leaving them with only three points from their first four matches.

Their next game is against Udinese on Sunday.

Arne Slot celebrated his 46th birthday with his debut UCL win

Liverpool manager Arne Slot celebrated his 46th birthday with a memorable first Champions League victory, guiding his team to a 3-1 triumph over AC Milan in Italy. Slot described the win as an excellent birthday gift.

Taking over from Jurgen Klopp, the Champions League-winning coach, Slot led Liverpool to a comeback victory at the San Siro after falling behind to a third-minute goal from Christian Pulisic.

The Reds secured the win with goals from Ibrahima Konaté, Virgil van Dijk, and Dominik Szoboszlai.

The former Feyenoord boss praised his team’s performance, noting that it was a perfect response after a surprising 1-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest just days earlier.

“A great way to spend my birthday,” Slot said. “We have more than 11 players, and the ones that came in did well. You wouldn’t have said this after five minutes, but after we did well.

“Losing Saturday was a blow, and to be 1-0 down early tonight, you are wondering how we react.

“But if you can play so good it is — I won’t say a disgrace — unbelievable you lose to Forest at home if you can play like this today.”

Slot gave Cody Gakpo his first start of the season and was repaid with an impressive performance by the Netherlands forward, and the manager said the former PSV Eindhoven player produced what he expected.

“I would have played Cody Gakpo on Saturday but he played two games for the national side,” Slot said. “Today was more of a team display than an individual display.”

It was a special day, too, for Liverpool captain Van Dijk, who marked his 50th appearance in the Champions League with just his third goal in the competition.

“Obviously I am very pleased with the win, and I am pleased with the way we bounced back after a difficult start,” he told Sky Italy. “Overall we put in a very good performance with and without the ball.

“When there is a set-piece we try to be important. The delivery was outstanding in my opinion. Overall I am very pleased that we won and we limited them to only two big chances.

“We have been very successful over the years, and I am always grateful for that. Things have moved on, the new manager is here and he has principles that are different.

“We are working on things, and there are still things to improve.”

FIFA partners with WHO in new concussion drive

On Wednesday, FIFA and the World Health Organisation (WHO) unveiled a new global initiative focused on concussion awareness.

Named “Suspect and Protect: No Match is Worth the Risk,” the programme, created in collaboration with brain health specialists, seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of traumatic brain injuries and provide valuable resources for managing these risks, according to their joint announcement.

“By knowing the signs of concussion, by being aware of the risks, and by treating a concussion correctly, you can help to put player safety first,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.

In March, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) sanctioned the use of permanent concussion substitutes following a successful trial, with the new rule making its debut in this year’s Copa América.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, emphasised the need for heightened awareness about concussions across all levels of football.

“WHO is proud to team up with FIFA… to promote ways to protect the brains of footballers,” he added.

A perfect night says Ten Hag as Man Utd thrash Barnsley 7-0

Erik ten Hag celebrated a resounding victory as Manchester United defeated Barnsley 7-0 in the Carabao Cup, calling it a “perfect night.”

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Christian Eriksen each scored two goals, with Antony converting a penalty to complete the scoreline.

This triumph marked Ten Hag’s biggest win since taking charge of United and was the club’s largest victory since their 9-0 thrashing of Southampton in February 2021 under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Not for me but for the team this is the perfect night,” Ten Hag said afterwards. “I think we could do everything that we planned to do; how we win, next round, scored some great goals, entertained the fans, we worked on our game model so we are happy.”

Ten Hag took the opportunity to rotate his lineup for the Carabao Cup match against Barnsley, making eight changes from the side that defeated Southampton 3-0.

Marcus Rashford was one of the few to retain his spot, adding two goals to his tally after scoring at the weekend. This marked the first time the England forward scored multiple goals in a match since February 2023, when he netted twice in a 3-0 win over Leicester City.

“I know from my first season here that when he scores then, for the team, it’s more easy,” said Ten Hag. “When you have a player in your squad who is a guarantee for goals then it can make the difference.

You can do a lot of things very well between the boxes but football matches are decided in the box.”

United have bounced back from the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool by scoring 10 goals without conceding against Southampton and Barnsley.

“I was not devastated after Liverpool, and I am not celebrating now,” said Ten Hag. It is a never-ending process. I know where I want to go, in which direction.

I know we have a lot of speed, dynamic, and we have seen this today and we have players capable of dominating possession. We have to work even harder to get all the stages of the game right.”

  • 2025 AFCON Qualifier: GFA mull hosting of Sudan in Togo after CAF ban

2025 AFCON Qualifier: GFA mull hosting of Sudan in Togo after CAF ban

Ghana Football Association (GFA) is considering relocating the Black Stars’ upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifier against Sudan to Togo.

Discussions are underway, with Togo’s national stadium emerging as the preferred option, though Ivory Coast is also being considered.

This comes after CAF withdrew its approval of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium due to poor pitch conditions.

The GFA is expected to announce the final decision soon regarding the October qualifier’s venue.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revoked its approval for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium after complaints from Angola about the pitch’s poor condition following their 1-0 victory over the Black Stars.

In response, the National Sports Authority (NSA) temporarily closed the stadium for maintenance, stating it would be unavailable for events for at least a month.

If the venue isn’t ready for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on October 7, 2024, Ghana may be forced to play at a neutral venue as other national stadiums fail to meet CAF standards.

Ronaldo’s message to Al Nassr’s dismissed coach

Cristiano Ronaldo bid a heartfelt farewell to Luis Castro following the Portuguese manager’s dismissal from Al-Nassr.

The Saudi Pro League club ended its association with Castro on Tuesday after a sluggish start to the season, marked by two draws in their opening three league games.

As Castro, aged 63, departed, Ronaldo shared a touching tribute to his fellow Portuguese.

Ronaldo took to Instagram to share a photograph of himself with Castro as he wrote, “Thank you for everything.”

Following Luis Castro’s departure, Al-Nassr is reportedly considering former AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli as their next head coach, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Pioli, who left Milan at the end of the 2023/24 season, was previously in talks with Al-Ittihad, but those negotiations fell through.

The 39-year-old, who missed Al-Nassr’s AFC Champions League match against Al-Shorta on Monday due to a viral infection, is anticipated to return in time for their upcoming Saudi Pro League game against Al-Ittihad on Friday.

  • TUC-govt committee meeting on galamsey ends in stalemate

TUC-govt committee meeting on galamsey ends in stalemate

The recent meeting between the government’s ad hoc committee on illegal mining and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) ended without a resolution.

Chaired by Minister for National Security Albert Kan-Dapaah, the committee’s role is to evaluate the effectiveness of current measures addressing environmental damage from illegal mining.

The TUC presented six new demands, during the meeting, which the committee has agreed to forward to the president.

The committee is also expected to propose more effective strategies to combat illegal mining.

Additionally, the TUC is calling for consultations with traditional leaders and other key stakeholders.

Last week, the TUC warned of potential strike action if the government does not take decisive steps against illegal small-scale mining.

The Congress has given the government until the end of September to meet their demands.

In a statement, the TUC Secretary General called for the immediate declaration of a state of emergency in areas affected by illegal mining, a suspension of mining activities in forest reserves, the establishment of specialised courts for offenders, and the use of military force to dismantle mining equipment.

  • Akufo-Addo dismisses NSA Director General over CAF’s ban of Baba Yara

Akufo-Addo dismisses NSA Director General over CAF’s ban of Baba Yara

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has removed Dodzie Numekevor from his position as Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), effective immediately, according to JoySports.

The dismissal is believed to be a response to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) revoking the Baba Yara Sports Stadium’s approval to host international matches.

Sources from JoySports indicate that President Akufo-Addo made the decision after learning that the stadium had been rented out for a church event just six days before the crucial AFCON 2025 qualifier against Angola.

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, through his Chief Director, William Kartay Caesar, issued a query to Mr. Numekevor, requesting him to justify why he should not face consequences for bringing embarrassment to both the presidency and the nation.

Mr. Dodzie Numekevor was given until Wednesday, September 18, 2024, to respond to a query regarding his leadership at the National Sports Authority (NSA).

However, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, dissatisfied with the state of sports facilities under Numekevor’s management, decided to dismiss him on Tuesday afternoon, according to JoySports sources.

Before his removal, Numekevor had taken steps to close the Baba Yara, Accra, and Cape Coast stadiums for maintenance, addressing public concerns about the deteriorating conditions of these venues.

This move followed a letter from CAF, dated September 10, which highlighted the need for a full reconstruction of the Baba Yara pitch and noted the substandard state of the Accra and Cape Coast facilities.

As a result, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been instructed to select an approved venue outside of Ghana to host Sudan for their matchday 3 fixture in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Ghana is currently considering Togo if none of its local venues are cleared to host the game.

Dr. Dodzie Numekevor had served as interim Director General of the NSA since February 26, 2024, succeeding Professor Peter Twumasi, who held the role for six years.

  • EC office rampaged, several injured in NDC ‘Enough is Enough’ demo

EC office rampaged, several injured in NDC ‘Enough is Enough’ demo

National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, had hoped for a peaceful protest, but chaos erupted in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region.

Protesters clashed with police ahead of the party’s presentation of their petition to the Electoral Commission (EC) during the ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration.

The demonstration aimed to highlight alleged irregularities in the provisional voters’ register ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The NDC is demanding an independent forensic audit of the voters’ register, citing concerns such as missing names, duplicate voter identification numbers, and unauthorised transfers of voters into different constituencies.

To express their dissatisfaction, the opposition party organised nationwide demonstrations across all sixteen regions, with the goal of delivering a petition to the Commission.

In the Ashanti Region, a large number of protesters marched from Amakom through Asafo, then to Adum, Dakwadwom, and the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), before finally reaching the Regional EC office.

The march remained peaceful until one protester attempted to break through a police barrier, claiming it was their constitutional right to see the EC accept their petition.

As the police tried to prevent him, others forced their way into the EC premises, which were originally only supposed to be accessed by the protest leaders.

During this confrontation, some protesters sustained injuries, and the main gate to the EC’s premises, along with another gate, was damaged.

The EC has stated that it will file an official complaint over the disturbances. Reports indicated that the protester who instigated the chaos was arrested, along with two others, though they were later released. The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.

There were also claims of police shooting, which the police denied in a statement issued shortly after the media reports surfaced.

Meanwhile, the NDC has formally presented its petition to Parliament in Accra.

The party’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, summarised the NDC’s key demands following the ‘Enough Is Enough’ protest held on Tuesday.

  • Ghana faces EU ban on vegetable exports due to galamsey crisis – VEPEAG warns

Ghana faces EU ban on vegetable exports due to galamsey crisis – VEPEAG warns

Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association of Ghana (VEPEAG) have expressed fears over an imminent ban on vegetable exports in Ghana by the European Union over the deteriorating effects of galamsey.

VEPEAG contends that without clear guidelines, the enforcement of a  ban could jeopardise countless jobs and result in significant financial losses.

Speaking at a press briefing on September 17, 2024, VEPEAG President Dr. Felix Mawuli Kamasah urged the government to take immediate action to prevent further harm to the agricultural sector.

“We want to tell the government that they should quickly come out with a policy in terms of standard and quality and the measures we can put in place.

This will enable us to secure what we are doing. Because when the ban is enforced, a lot of people will lose their jobs. Most of the youth have a lot of interest in vegetable farming or agribusiness,” he said.

Ghana previously faced a similar situation in 2014 when the EU imposed a three-year ban on the import of certain vegetables due to pest infestations.

The ban led to an estimated $30 million  revenue loss for the country before it was lifted following compliance with EU standards.

This time, VEPEAG is particularly alarmed about the pollution of water sources used for irrigation, which has been worsened by illegal mining activities. Dr. Kamasah warned that Ghana could lose up to $50 million in revenue if swift measures are not taken.

“If the ban is enforced, we are looking at around 50 million dollars which will be lost,” he noted.

To push for government action, VEPEAG plans to join Organized Labour in a demonstration against the government by the end of September if no decisive policy is introduced to tackle the galamsey issue.

Dr. Kamasah added, “If the president does not come out with a policy by the close of the month, if we don’t hear anything from him, we will join the Labour people.”

The association continues to call for urgent measures to address environmental degradation and protect the livelihoods of those involved in Ghana’s vegetable export industry.

  • Reece James’ return to Chelsea delayed due to slow hamstring injury recovery

Reece James’ return to Chelsea delayed due to slow hamstring injury recovery

Reece James’ comeback to football has faced another delay as the Chelsea defender’s hamstring injury recovery is reportedly taking longer than anticipated.

According to The Sun, the player’s rehabilitation has slowed, with the club’s medical team expressing concern that his hamstring hasn’t healed as quickly as initially hoped.

However, sources within Stamford Bridge have stressed that there is no indication of a new injury or setback to the affected muscle.

James sustained this latest injury during the summer, following an extended absence after undergoing hamstring surgery in December 2023.

Reece James was restricted to only 10 Premier League appearances during the 2023-24 season, following a similarly disrupted campaign the previous year where he managed just 16 games.

His current hamstring injury also ruled him out of England’s squad for the 2024 European Championship, where the team reached the final.

Although James took part in Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the USA, he has yet to make an appearance in the Premier League this season.

At 24, the fullback has endured a difficult career plagued by recurring hamstring issues, which have undoubtedly hindered him from reaching his full potential.

While no specific timeline has been set for his return, Chelsea fans are hopeful they’ll see their star defender back in action before the year ends.

  • Players likely to strike over rising number of fixtures – Man City’s Rodri

Players likely to strike over rising number of fixtures – Man City’s Rodri

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has warned that players are nearing the point of striking due to the rising number of fixtures.

City is set to face Inter Milan on Wednesday in the Champions League, where a new format introduces at least two additional games before reaching the knockout rounds.

Furthermore, the Club World Cup, in which Pep Guardiola’s team will participate, has been expanded to include 32 teams and will take place next summer.

“I think we are close to that,” said Rodri when asked whether players would strike.
“It’s easy to understand something general; if you ask any player, he will say the same.
“If it keeps this way, it will be a moment that we have no other option, but let’s see.”

With the revamped formats of the Champions League and Club World Cup, Manchester City will face a minimum of four additional matches compared to last season’s guaranteed fixtures.

While they only needed two games to secure the Club World Cup title last December, the upcoming summer will demand a more rigorous schedule.

If City reaches the final, they will be required to play three group stage matches followed by four knockout games.

Over the last two full seasons, City has competed in 120 matches across all competitions.

  • 2026 Commonwealth Games to be held in Scotland

2026 Commonwealth Games to be held in Scotland

Glasgow has been confirmed as the host city for the 2026 Commonwealth Games after receiving support from the Scottish government.

The event will be a scaled-down version, featuring fewer sports and participants, and marks the city’s second time hosting the Games, following its 2014 edition.

Originally, the Australian state of Victoria was set to host but pulled out due to escalating costs. In response, Australian officials have committed significant financial backing to secure the deal.

Scottish Health and Sport Minister Neil Gray met with Commonwealth Games Australia to discuss the necessary funding, receiving the assurances needed to proceed.

The Scottish government has now formally expressed its support to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) for a “scaled-back but high-quality” event.

The 2026 Games will feature 10 sports across four venues in Glasgow, with athletics at Scotstoun Stadium and swimming at Tollcross.

CGF president Chris Jenkins indicated that they are working with Commonwealth Games Scotland to officially announce Glasgow as the host city in the near future.

He said: “We believe Glasgow 2026 will be an important first step in our commitment to reset and reframe the Commonwealth Games as a co-created, sustainable model that minimises costs, inspires athletes, and excites hosts and International federations.”

He confirmed that Commonwealth Games Australia had contributed £2.3m to “enhance the event.”

The total budget for the Games is expected to be about £114m.

Len Clay Sports Stadium now temporary home venue for Kotoko after Baba Yara closure

Asante Kotoko has opted to use the Len Clay Sports Stadium in Obuasi as their temporary home ground for the current season.

This move comes after the Baba Yara Stadium was closed by the National Sports Authority (NSA) for renovation.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently revoked its approval of the Kumasi stadium, citing ongoing issues such as a poor playing surface, which was evident during the Black Stars’ 1-0 defeat to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In response, the Sports Ministry has instructed the NSA to address the problems with the pitch, though there is no clear timeline for when the stadium will be ready for use.

For now, Asante Kotoko will continue to play their home games at the Len Clay Stadium.

The team is scheduled to train there on Friday in preparation for their match against Young Apostles.

  • GFA reports Betway, Soccabet, others to Gaming Commission over unauthorised betting

GFA reports Betway, Soccabet, others to Gaming Commission over unauthorised betting

Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially reported certain betting companies to the Gaming Commission of Ghana. These companies have been accused of offering unauthorised betting on GFA-sanctioned matches without approval from the Football Association.

In response, the GFA has urged the Gaming Commission to take immediate action to investigate and halt these betting platforms from continuing their unlicensed activities involving the Association’s games.

The Gaming Commission is responsible for regulating gaming activities in the country, including issuing licences and permits to operators and individuals who wish to run promotions that include elements of chance.

The betting companies reported to the Gaming Commission include Betway, Soccabet, Sportybet, Football.com, and Ilobet.

The unauthorised use of any of the GFA’s match data by the above-mentioned companies for betting purposes infringes on the Association’s legal rights and is in clear breach of its rules and regulations.

The GFA has a strict policy against unauthorised betting on football matches, as such activities pose a significant threat to the integrity of the game and harm the reputation of the Association.

It will be recalled that President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku issued a stern warning to betting companies operating in the country during the 30th convocation of Congress, held at the GFA technical centre, Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.

He stated that no betting company has been authorised to offer odds on Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches.

The President emphasised that the GFA’s legal team will soon be taking action against betting companies that continue to include GPL matches in their offerings.

“We have not licenced any betting company to take odds on our games,” President Simeon-Okraku said during the 30th Ordinary Congress in Prampram on August 27, 2024.

“We are going to empower our legal department to confront this issue head-on. It is not okay for betting companies to feed on our football.”

The GFA President has made it clear that the association is open to partnering with betting companies but only if they comply with the necessary regulations.

  • Accra and Cape Coast stadia shut for maintenance

Accra and Cape Coast stadia shut for maintenance

National Sports Authority (NSA) has temporarily closed the Accra and Cape Coast Sports Stadiums for maintenance to upgrade them for upcoming international games.

This follows a directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after the Baba Yara Sports Stadium was banned from hosting international matches due to poor pitch conditions.

While CAF recommended a full overhaul of Baba Yara’s pitch, the NSA is now working to make alternative venues, like the Accra Sports Stadium and Legon Stadium, ready for Ghana’s AFCON 2025 qualifier against Sudan.

The GFA has noted that while the Accra stadium is listed in CAF’s database, it still requires significant upgrades.

The Legon stadium, however, does not seem ready to be approved for the game.

On September 6, 2024, the GFA held discussions with the Sports Ministry and the NSA regarding the urgent need to fix the Cape Coast Sports Stadium following the Black Stars’ defeat to the Palancas Negras at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Currently, it appears Ghana might host Sudan in Cape Coast, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
However, should no venue in Ghana meet the necessary standards, the GFA has also considered the option of playing the game in Togo.

This is how much Barcelona paid for Ghana’s youngster Abdul Aziz – Saddick Adams details

Abdul Aziz Issah, a standout player from Dreams FC, has become the second Ghanaian to make the move from the Ghana Premier League to Barcelona.

He secured a loan deal with the Spanish club that runs until June 2025. Reports suggest that Barcelona paid €1 million for the initial loan after starting with a €400,000 offer, as revealed by sports journalist Saddick Adams.

This move marks a significant milestone in Issah’s young career, showing his growing potential on the international stage.

“Barcelona offered 400,000 euros, but the transfer ended up costing them 1 million,” he said on Angel TV.

Aziz joined David Oduro as Barcelona’s two signings from the Ghanaian top flight.

Saddick Adams opined that the duo’s move will positively impact future sales of Ghana Premier League players if they deliver.

“Our reputation as a country will rise depending on how they (Aziz and Oduro) fare. Oduro is a very good player, as well as Aziz.”

Abdul Aziz Issah will be joining Barcelona Atlètic, the club’s B team, for the 2024-2025 season.

Unlike Aziz, who secured his spot through an initial loan agreement, his compatriot David Oduro signed a permanent deal with Barcelona.

Oduro has committed to the club with a three-year contract, solidifying his place in the squad.

This marks an exciting chapter for both players as they embark on their journey with one of football’s most prestigious clubs.

  • 115 FFP charges: Former Man City chairman says he is “worried”

115 FFP charges: Former Man City chairman says he is “worried”

Former Manchester City chairman David Bernstein is “worried” over the 115 financial charges the club are facing at the ‘Trial of the Century’.

City have been accused of violating financial fair play (FFP) rules over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018, and are now the subject of a long-awaited hearing. The legal process, which began on Monday, is expected to last for approximately two months, with a final verdict unlikely to be revealed before spring 2025.

The charges cover a range of alleged breaches, from a failure to provide accurate financial details to non-cooperation with Premier League authorities during the investigation, which could result in serious consequences for the club.

The harshest penalty could see City relegated from the Premier League, although fines and point deductions are also potential outcomes if they are found guilty.

Bernstein, who served as Manchester City’s chairman from 1998 to 2003, shared his concerns about the charges in an interview with Sky Sports. He noted the gravity of the situation and expressed his unease as both a former chairman and a lifelong fan of the club.

“I am not surprised it has got to this stage. There are 115 charges, they cover a wide period of time, and on the surface, they are serious charges and have to be answered,” Bernstein said. “In a way, they should have gotten this resolved somewhat earlier, but these things do take time.

I am a City fan, as well as being an ex-chairman, and I am worried. On the surface, they look to be serious charges. City will have the best lawyers, they will defend themselves as they absolutely have the right to do, and we will see what happens. This is really heavy stuff.”

City have enjoyed tremendous success over the last 15 years, transforming from a mid-table club to one of the world’s most dominant football teams.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8U3dmhpyXI

Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, City recently became the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive league titles.

However, Bernstein is concerned that this remarkable achievement could be overshadowed if the club is found guilty of breaching financial regulations.

“It is a shame because the club has come from where it was, a club that was underperforming for many years, to become arguably the greatest performing club of all time with four Premier League [titles] in a row,” Bernstein explained. “To have the possibility of that being tarnished is really sad, but we will see what happens. We may find that they are not guilty of these things.”

Manchester City have been accused of multiple financial breaches spanning from 2009 to 2018, including 54 charges for not providing accurate financial data, 14 of which relate to undisclosed player and manager payments.

Additionally, the club faces five charges of violating UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, seven instances of breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability regulations, and 35 accusations of failing to cooperate with investigations.

If found guilty, these charges could severely damage the club’s reputation and achievements over the last decade.

Frustrating! This isn’t how to grow football – CAF President on Ghana’s stadium ban

CAF President Patrick Motsepe criticized Ghana and other nations facing stadium bans for neglecting their sports infrastructure.

Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, Kenya, Motsepe expressed frustration over countries being forced to play home matches abroad due to inadequate stadium conditions.

He highlighted the negative impact this negligence has on players and national teams, emphasizing that poor football infrastructure limits the teams’ ability to perform at their best, and places an unnecessary burden on both clubs and athletes due to governmental shortcomings.

“Nothing frustrates me more than a national team or club side having to play home matches outside.

“You can’t grow football if the national teams or club sides aren’t playing in front of their home fans.

“Our conversations in every country are to make sure there is at least one stadium capable of hosting a CAF category C game,” he said.

Last week, CAF announced that it had withdrawn the conditional approval for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host Black Stars matches.

CAF, in a statement to the GFA, mentioned the poor nature of the pitch, drainage, and other issues as the basis for the decision to withdraw the approval.

As a result of the ban, Ghana is likely to face Sudan in a crucial AFCON qualifying doubleheader in October, with Togo or Côte d’Ivoire being the likely venue for Ghana’s home leg in the fixture.

Another Ten Hag- Antony ‘drama’? See what the coach has to say to out-of-favour winger

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has delivered a stern message to Antony regarding his limited playing time this season.

Antony has found it difficult to secure a regular spot in Ten Hag’s lineup, having appeared for just one minute in the Premier League so far, as a late substitute against Brighton.

Last season, the Brazilian had only five goal contributions across all competitions, and Ten Hag seems to be questioning his commitment during training.

With Manchester United set to face Barnsley in the League Cup midweek, Ten Hag has the opportunity to rotate his squad. However, it remains uncertain whether Antony will feature in the match.

Ten Hag has emphasised that Antony needs to significantly improve his training performances to earn more playing time.

Ten Hag told reporters: “We have training every day, and the players have to earn the right to play.

When players are doing the right things in training, when the attitude is good and they show performance in training,, then they will earn the right to play.”

Manchester United will take on Barnsley in a midweek League Cup fixture before resuming Premier League play against Crystal Palace this weekend.

Antony will be hoping for some playing time in these upcoming matches.

2024 polls: Politics of ideas and not insults, be decent with your language – Bawumia to Mahama

NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken issue with former President John Mahama, criticizing his recent statements as inappropriate.

Dr. Bawumia was responding to remarks in which Mahama accused some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and religious leaders of hypocrisy for not criticizing the current NPP administration.

While campaigning in the Amasaman constituency on Monday, Dr. Bawumia stressed that such comments were unbecoming of a former president, calling for a more respectful tone in political discussions.

“You all know that the December polls are between myself and former President Mahama, but we all know, and he also knows, that he will fail, so he gets peeved at the least thing.

I have heard that today he insulted pastors, chiefs, imams, and CSOs, saying they are all hypocrites. Have you heard this before?”

“Is that how a former president should speak?… Recently too, he insulted the EC and said that the NPP government is foolish. Have you heard this before?

“Is that how a former president should speak? We must have some standards of decency in the language we speak as politicians. This election is about ideas, not insults,” he stated.

“It is his right; there’s nothing wrong” – Islamic cleric defends Bawumia on receiving prayers at a shrine

Islamic cleric Alhaji Abdul Hannan Abdul Rahman has defended Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to receive prayers at a shrine during his community campaign in Accra.

The leader of the Coalition of Muslim Organisations Ghana stated that Dr. Bawumia’s actions are consistent with the behaviour of a devout Muslim and do not violate Islamic principles.

“Let’s be fair to him; he is a vice president for all. He represents everyone.

So, if he visits a group and is invited and prayed for without him being the one pouring libation in prayer, it is his right, and Islam has made it flexible for all of us to do such in furtherance of national cohesion,” he stated.

The cleric argued that as a leader in a multi-faith country, the vice president has the right to promote religious tolerance, and Dr. Bawumia’s recent actions reflect his leadership qualities.

As part of his campaign in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia visited several Ga communities, where a video surfaced showing him receiving blessings from a Wulomo at a shrine.

This has sparked debate, with some critics questioning Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to Islam after the video’s circulation. In contrast, NPP supporters have praised him for demonstrating religious inclusivity.

At the same time, former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticised religious leaders for not holding the government and Dr. Bawumia accountable for what he views as poor governance.

  • Ghanaians abroad petition European Union against EC

Ghanaians abroad petition European Union against EC

A group known as Concerned Citizens of Ghana in the Diaspora has formally petitioned the European Union (EU) over concerns regarding the actions of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), which they claim are contributing to rising tensions in the country.

The group highlighted issues surrounding the EC’s response to objections raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) about the Provisional Voter Register, including alleged illegal voter transfers and the EC’s refusal to allow an independent audit of the voter register, as key factors fuelling unrest.

In a statement, the diaspora group also expressed concern over the reluctance of certain political parties to endorse a peace pact ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“We the Concerned Citizens of Ghana in the Diaspora are alarmed by recent developments involving the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) that have raised tensions in the country.

These concerns have been raised by the leading opposition party as well as some leading/founding members of the governing party. We itemise some of the concerns raised below:

“1. Irregularities with the voter’s register with reference to the transfer of voters.

    a. The NDC claims that about 15,000 voters have been captured on the EC’s transfer list with no indication as to where they were transferred from.

    b. At least one EC official has been cited for conducting illegal transfers, hence, the call for a forensic audit – EC has denied the request for an audit.

“2. Recent post-election violence in the just-ended primaries in the Walewale Constituency.

“3. Missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) and calls for an audit.

“4. Refusal of some political parties to sign the National Peace Pact which political parties are encouraged to sign as part of their commitment to ensure peace before, during, and after the December 7 elections.

“These concerns have necessitated a nationwide demonstration, which is expected to take place on September 17, 2024,” part of the petition reads.

The group is, therefore, calling on the EU to intervene in the happenings in Ghana before it turns into a political upheaval.

It asked the EC to conduct an investigation into the matter and engage the various stakeholders involved in the 2024 election to ensure that there is peace before, during, and after the 2024 election.

“Being cognisant of the political instability within the ECOWAS bloc and the potential of these tensions to jeopardise the country’s democratic gains if not addressed immediately and seriously, the Concerned Citizens of Ghana in the Diaspora are taking proactive measures to ensure that Ghana conducts free and fair elections and maintains the peace the country has enjoyed over the years.

“As such, we are calling on the European Union to shift its attention to the developments happening in Ghana and take proactive measures to engage the EC as well as the government to reassure Ghanaians of free and fair elections devoid of bloody confrontations.

We call on the EU to:

“1. Conduct an independent investigation into the allegations and concerns.

“2. Issue a statement to the EC and government regarding your findings.

“3. Engage political parties and the Peace Council to ensure peaceful elections,” the petition concluded.

  • Think before you choose; go for the lesser evil – Pope Francis to Catholics on Trump, Kamala Harris

Think before you choose; go for the lesser evil – Pope Francis to Catholics on Trump, Kamala Harris

Pope Francis has urged members of the Catholic Church to view the upcoming U.S. presidential election as a decision between the lesser of two evils.

While flying back to Rome on Friday, the Pope expressed his concerns about the two leading candidates—former President Donald Trump of the Republican Party and Vice President Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party—without naming them directly.

He highlighted that both candidates, in different ways, hold positions that he believes are “against life.”

“You must choose the lesser evil,” he stated. “Who is the lesser evil? That lady or that gentleman? I don’t know. Everyone, in conscience, [has to] think and do this.”

Abortion and immigration remain key determinants in American politics, and according to the Pope, refusing to welcome immigrants is a “grave” sin, and abortion is akin to an “assassination.” Hence, the electorate must choose between the lesser of two evils.

He, however, emphasised the need for citizens to exercise their franchise, noting that “not voting is ugly.

“It is not good. You must vote,” he stated.

Throughout its history, the Catholic Church has firmly opposed abortion while advocating for more compassionate immigration policies.

The Biden-Harris administration has positioned itself as pro-choice, implementing policies that support women’s right to make decisions regarding abortion.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has maintained a hardline stance on immigration and has outlined plans to introduce stricter immigration policies if he wins the presidency in November.

With just 50 days until the November 5 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump are the main contenders in the race for the White House.

US warns of likely terrorist attack in Kenya

With Kenya marking the anniversaries of significant past terrorist attacks this month, including the 9/11 attacks and the September 21, 2013, Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, the US has issued a fresh terror advisory to its citizens living in the country.

“While attacks can occur at any time, concerns are heightened in proximity to anniversaries of prior terrorist attacks, such as September 11, the September 21 Westgate Mall attack,” the embassy said in a Friday advisory.

Equally, the embassy says the first anniversary of the surprise attack by Hamas on Israel (October 7, 2023) is nearing.

“The US Embassy in Nairobi reminds US citizens in Kenya that they should exercise increased caution due to the risks of terrorism and kidnapping.

Locations frequented by US citizens and other foreigners and tourists in Nairobi and elsewhere in Kenya continue to be targets for terrorists,” it stated.

The embassy has recommended that US citizens exercise caution in popular tourist spots, reassess their personal security measures, stay updated through local media, steer clear of protest areas, avoid large crowds, and maintain a low profile.

The British High Commission in Kenya echoed these recommendations from the US Embassy.

In a revised advisory issued on September 13, the High Commission included the US Embassy’s warning on its website and emphasised that visiting regions near Somalia could lead to invalidation of travel insurance for British citizens if they disregard the advice.

PSG stands by defender Nuno Mendes after racial abuse in new message

Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) Nuno Mendes faced a wave of racist and abusive messages on social media after a French league match.

The club swiftly denounced the harassment and expressed its complete support for the Portuguese left-back, who was targeted following PSG’s 3-1 victory over Brest on Saturday.

Mendes, who is black, posted a racist message he received on his Instagram account.

The incident occurred after Mendes fouled Ludovic Ajorque in the penalty area, allowing Romain Del Castillo to score and put Brest ahead during the game.

“Paris Saint-Germain doesn’t tolerate racism, antisemitism, or any other form of discrimination,” the club said.

“The racial insults directed at Nuno Mendes are totally unacceptable… We are working with the relevant authorities and associations to ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”

Portuguese Football Federation president Fernando Gomes has expressed his solidarity.

“It is deplorable that in the 21st century we still have to deal with so many prejudices and racist attitudes,” Gomes said in a statement.

  • Proceedings begin for Man City’s 115 financial charges

Proceedings begin for Man City’s 115 financial charges

The independent hearing into Manchester City’s alleged 115 breaches of Premier League financial regulations finally began on Monday.

it was previously reported the trial would begin on Monday, with the hearing dubbed by British media as the “sports trial of the century.” It is expected to last for around two months.

The aim is for the final verdict, including any appeal, to be completed by the end of the 2024-25 season

Manchester City, who have claimed the English Premier League title four consecutive times, were referred to an independent commission in February 2023 over charges spanning from 2009 to 2018. The club has consistently denied any misconduct.

If found guilty of some or all of the charges, City could face severe consequences, including fines, point deductions, or even relegation from the Premier League. Such a ruling would cast a shadow over what has been one of the most successful eras in English football.

Since Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group took over in 2008, City have secured eight Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups, six League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

On Friday, manager Pep Guardiola expressed support for the trial, asserting that City should be considered innocent until proven otherwise.

“It starts soon and then [hopefully] finishes soon. An independent panel will decide, and I am looking forward to the decision,” Guardiola told a news conference.

“We’re going to see. I know what people are looking forward to, what they expect, I know, what I read for many, many years.

“I am not a lawyer. [Striker] Erling [Haaland] is not a lawyer. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty.”

Manchester City faces multiple charges, including providing inaccurate financial details, not fully disclosing payments to players and managers, breaching Premier League and UEFA financial fair play rules, and failing to cooperate with Premier League investigations.

This isn’t the first time City has faced allegations of financial misconduct. In 2020, UEFA imposed a two-year ban on the club from the Champions League for inflating sponsorship revenues between 2012 and 2016.

However, City successfully overturned the ban after appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

City said at the time of the referral to the Premier League’s independent commission that they were surprised by the league’s “issuing of these alleged breaches.”

The hearing, set to take place behind closed doors, is expected to last several weeks, casting a shadow over Manchester City’s quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

Regardless of the outcome, both sides have the option to appeal, which could extend the process into mid-2025.

Last season, both Everton and Nottingham Forest were penalised with points deductions for violating the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations, while Leicester City managed to escape a similar penalty after successfully appealing.

“There’s no end to it” – Man City’s Akanji worried over football calendar

Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji humorously suggested he might consider retiring by the time he turns 30 due to the ever-growing demands of top-tier football. The 29-year-old has already featured in seven games for both club and country this season.

His last appearance in the previous campaign was on July 6, when Switzerland exited Euro 2024, and just over a month later, on August 10, he kicked off the 2024-25 season in England’s Community Shield.

Next week, City are set to embark on their expanded Champions League journey, facing eight group-stage matches before the knockout rounds.

To cap off the season, they will also participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, a 32-team competition set to conclude with a final on July 13.

“It’s so tough,” Akanji said. “You don’t just think about this season—but also next season. Let’s say we win the league or cup, then go to the final of the Club World Cup; the Community Shield is three weeks after. So when do we have holidays?

“There are no breaks in winter, so if we are lucky we get two weeks and then we need to be back and into next season. Then the next summer it’s the World Cup. There’s no end to it.”

Akanji has played 48 club games in each of his two full seasons at City and is preparing for a similar workload this term.

“It’s just game after game and I don’t know how it will work out over the next couple of years,” he added. “You can’t just keep adding game after game and assume everything will be like it was. You have to think about the players as well

“At some point you’ll be too tired to play any more games. And then come injuries, definitely. We train as hard as possible and we are fit — but there has to be a limit. Maybe I’ll retire at 30.”

Akanji’s feelings resonate with many players and the leading footballers’ union, FIFPRO.

In June, FIFPRO initiated legal action against FIFA, challenging the governing body’s authority to unilaterally determine the football calendar and its decision to introduce and schedule the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Demanding calendar to be blamed for Real Madrid’s injury woes – Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has attributed the team’s injury struggles this season to a congested match schedule, with forward Brahim Díaz becoming the latest casualty.

Díaz was forced to leave the field during Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday after sustaining an abductor injury in his right leg.

While initial reports suggested that Díaz could be sidelined for up to three months, ESPN sources now indicate the forward may recover sooner, with a revised timeline estimating his return in just over two months.

According to ESPN, Brahim Díaz is expected to be out for more than two months due to his injury.

Initially, the club feared a three-month recovery period, but sources close to the player are hopeful he might return sooner.

At a press conference on Monday, ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Stuttgart, manager Carlo Ancelotti pointed to the packed fixture schedule as a key factor behind the team’s spate of injuries early in the season.

In addition to Díaz, midfielders Jude Bellingham, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Dani Ceballos have also been sidelined recently.

However, Ancelotti confirmed that both Bellingham and Tchouaméni would be fit for Tuesday’s game.

“We’ve looked at what we can do, but it’s out of our hands,” Ancelotti said. “The problem is a calendar that’s too demanding. Now we have a new competition [the Champions League].

We don’t know how it will go, if it will be more entertaining, but the one fact is that we have two extra games.

“I call for people to think about cutting the number of games, to have more attractive competitions.”

During Real Madrid’s victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday, Brahim Diaz had to leave the field due to an injury.

Ancelotti confirmed that defender Éder Militão, who missed Monday’s training session, had simply been rested and is expected to be available for their match against Stuttgart.

The coach also addressed criticism of Vinícius Júnior, who faced backlash for his goal celebration after converting a penalty. Vinícius gestured to silence the crowd at the Reale Arena, a move that has sparked some controversy.

    Ancelotti defended the forward’s actions.

Cristiano Ronaldo has a virus and did not travel to Iraq with Al Nassr for Monday’s AFC Champions League Elite debut match at Al Shorta, the team announced on Sunday.

Al Nassr said that the Portugal forward “wasn’t feeling well” and “was diagnosed with a viral infection,” adding that the team physician confirmed he needs to rest, meaning he will miss the contest against the Baghdad-based club

Playing for Portugal in the Nations League, Ronaldo recently scored against both Croatia and Scotland to take his men’s record tally of international goals to 132.

Ronaldo won five UEFA Champions Leagues but has yet to win a major trophy with Al Nassr.

It’s the first edition of the Elite version, which replaced the AFC Champions League as Asia’s top club tournament.

Ronaldo’s debut in the Elite tournament could now come against Qatari club Al Rayyan on Sept. 20 in Riyadh.

My win always is in the second year – Spurs manager

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has confidently remarked, “I always win in my second year,” following their narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the north London derby.

The match saw Gabriel head in the decisive goal from a corner, pushing Arsenal up to second place in the Premier League standings.

Despite the loss, Spurs have only managed one win in their four league matches this season. Postecoglou, who previously managed Celtic, is now in his second season at Tottenham, having guided them to a fifth-place finish in the 2023-24 campaign.

After the disappointing loss, the Australian was asked about a pre-season interview where he said “usually in my second season I win things.”.

He told Sky Sports: “I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed.

“I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

Ange Postecoglou expressed confidence that Tottenham can compete for trophies this season, despite the club’s last piece of silverware being the 2008 League Cup—their only major win in the 21st century.

The Spurs manager pointed to his track record of success, having secured league titles in his second season with South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, and Yokohama F. Marinos.

He also guided Australia to victory in the Asian Cup two years after taking charge, and won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles during his time at Celtic.

Postecoglou firmly believes this pattern of second-season success could extend to his tenure at Tottenham.

Issah, who is currently on a season-long loan with Barca Atletic from Dreams FC, trained alongside fellow Ghanaian David Oduro.

Prior to being invited by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, Issah had expressed admiration for Yamal’s style of play, which he has tried to emulate.

The promising forward, a key player for Ghana’s U20 African Games-winning squad, is currently on loan to Barcelona’s reserve side, Barca Atletic, and aims to secure a permanent move.

Though he has yet to make his Barcelona B debut, his performance during first-team training has increased his chances of earning opportunities in the senior team as the season progresses.

Not a single standard stadium and they want to be commended – Mahama jabs over stadium ban

NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has criticised the government’s failure to maintain the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, leading to its ban by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

He described the situation as a national disgrace, pointing out that it is unprecedented for the Black Stars to play their home games at neutral venues due to poor pitch conditions.

Mahama used this incident to argue that the current administration has failed in its responsibilities and should not be re-elected in the 2024 elections.

“Recently, FIFA said the national team cannot play matches in Ghana. This is a huge embarrassment for us. It is the first time in Ghana’s history that we have been told there is no suitable stadium to host Black Stars games.

Despite this, they expect us to applaud them for their performance,” he said in Twi, as reported by GhOne TV on X.

It is important to note that Mahama mistakenly mentioned FIFA, but it was actually CAF that made the decision.

About the Baba Yara Stadium ban

CAF withdrew approval for the Baba Yara Stadium due to issues such as an uneven playing field, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover.

This decision followed the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola on September 5, 2024.

In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the Ghana Football Association to invite CAF officials to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Stadium to determine if they meet the requirements to host Black Stars games.

Where’s the money for the pitch maintenance given by FIFA? – Ben Malor quizzes GFA

Prominent broadcaster and former spokesperson for ex-President Mahama, Ben Dotse Malor, has raised serious concerns about the management of FIFA funds allocated to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for pitch maintenance.

FIFA reportedly provided $260,000 to improve football pitches across Ghana, yet the condition of major stadiums in Kumasi, Accra, Tamale, and Cape Coast remains poor, sparking public outrage.

Malor questioned how the funds were used, particularly as the Baba Yara Stadium faces a potential ban from hosting international matches due to its deteriorated pitch condition.

“FIFA had given the Ghana Football Association more than a quarter of a million dollars for pitch maintenance. Where is this money? So, how did we fail so badly?” he wrote on his page.

In 2020, FIFA granted more than $260,000 to the GFA under the FIFA Forward program, intended to improve 80 grass pitches across the country.

The goal was to ensure year-round maintenance, even during the dry season. These funds were also meant to benefit regional and youth teams, especially women’s football clubs.

However, despite this investment, many of the pitches remain in poor condition, sparking questions about how the money was spent.

Malor’s public query adds to growing public outcry, as Ghanaian football fans and stakeholders demand accountability from the GFA.

This call for transparency comes at a time when the state of the country’s football infrastructure is under scrutiny, and the GFA has yet to fully address concerns over the ineffective utilization of FIFA’s financial support.

On Saturday, the GFA issued a statement on its website explaining that the money was not necessarily meant for fixing pitches, adding that it has used the money to build boreholes to maintain some pitches.

His wife, Denise Acquah, joined him, smiling and waving at fans, including some from Crystal Palace.

Ayew, who recently signed with Leicester for £5 million after spending six years at Selhurst Park, has played five matches for his new club across all competitions, scoring one goal.

  • FIFA gave GFA over 260k dollars for pitch maintenance

FIFA gave GFA over 260k dollars for pitch maintenance

FIFA has confirmed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was awarded over $260,000 for the upkeep of grass pitches in Ghana.

According to an email from FIFA to JoySports’ Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, the funds were designated for the “installation of boreholes and water tanks” to enhance the condition of the playing surfaces.

A publication on FIFA’s website last week revealed that “FIFA Forward has also contributed to the maintenance of natural grass pitches at 80 venues in Ghana, benefiting Women’s Premier League and regional women’s clubs, as well as the purchase of footballs for youth and regional development.

“This initiative has supported regional women’s teams, where many of the U-20 national players began their careers.”

This revelation has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the current state of these pitches, none of which seem to be in a suitable condition to host even a Black Stars training session.

However, FIFA clarified in an email to Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, explaining, “FIFA assisted the GFA in maintaining natural grass pitches at 80 match venues across Ghana.

This included the installation of boreholes and water tanks, ensuring that the venues met the minimum club licensing requirements. The total support amounted to $267,273.”

About three years ago, the Ghana FA, in a statement on its website, announced the approval of the “Ghana Football Association Borehole Project” by FIFA.

The statement mentioned that the GFA Executive Council had decided to invest part of the FIFA Forward 1.0 programme funds to improve the quality of pitches and competitions through the installation of boreholes at game centres across the country.

“The borehole project, once completed, will be used to develop pitches for the Premier League, Division One League, Women’s Premier League, and Game Centres of Regional Football Associations, ensuring year-round use, including during the dry season,” the statement read.

At the time, the exact number of pitches and the total amount involved were not disclosed, but FIFA has now confirmed that the funding exceeded $260,000.

Despite the investment, the current pitches in the country are that horrible.

Don’t expect any development if you don’t vote for NPP – Ken Agyapong ‘threatens’ Kintampo North residents

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has delivered a sharp warning to the people of Kintampo North in the Bono East Region.

Agyapong stated that the residents would face serious consequences if they do not vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections.

He criticised the region for what he described as a lack of appreciation, despite its significant number of high-ranking government officials, for supporting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in previous elections.

Agyapong further threatened that if the NPP does not secure victory in the region, he would block any upcoming infrastructure and sports projects.

“If you don’t vote [for NPP] and you insist that we should come and develop this area… I am the Chairman at Ghana Gas who can authorise its construction, but I will personally not do it.

Because you never vote for us. You will collect all there is in the world but won’t vote for us,” Kennedy Agyapong said angrily.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the constituents of Kintampo North to reconsider their voting patterns.

He emphasised that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has consistently demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity and fairness, without discrimination.

Prempeh assured the voters that supporting Dr. Bawumia would mean choosing a leader dedicated to advancing Ghana through transformative policies aimed at driving national development forward.

Judicial Service says Anti-LGBT+ cases at Supreme Court not yet ready for hearing

Judicial Service of Ghana has announced that the cases challenging the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and the Ghanaian Family Values Bill (commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBT+ Bill) are not yet scheduled for hearing by the Supreme Court.

The delay is attributed to incomplete procedural steps by the involved parties.

According to a statement from the Communications Department of the Judicial Service, the parties must first file their respective statements of case and reach an agreement on a joint memorandum of issues before the cases can proceed to court.

“From the above, it is clear that the parties have not completed their work, and therefore, the cases are not ready for hearing,” the statement said.

Recent reports have prompted an update regarding the bill’s promoters, who are now planning demonstrations against the Chief Justice and the Judicial Service.

They accuse the judiciary of causing delays in their cases.

On July 17, 2024, a Supreme Court panel led by Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo postponed rulings on two interlocutory injunctions brought by Richard Dela Sky and Dr. Amanda Odoi, awaiting the final resolution of the main issues at hand.

Discontent has surfaced among the bill’s supporters, including Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo-Prampram, who are dissatisfied with the current pace of the proceedings and have announced intentions to protest against the Chief Justice and the judicial system.

In response, the Judicial Service has stated that the necessary preparations for the cases are still incomplete, thus delaying their readiness for hearing.

“This case (Richard Dela Sky vs. Parliament and Attorney General) was started with a writ filed on March 5, 2024. As of July 31, 2024, neither Parliament nor the Attorney General had filed a defence to the plaintiff’s action in the form of their statements of case.”

Similarly, in Dr. Amanda Odoi’s case, the statement said, “The 1st defendant (the Parliament) filed its statement of case on March 14, 2024. The 2nd defendant (the Attorney General) has not filed a statement of case.”

The Judicial Service assured the public that registries of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and High Courts are open throughout legal vacations to receive all processes due to be filed.

“The general public is further assured of the Judiciary’s readiness to adjudicate any matter that is ripe for hearing.”

Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has presented seven Mitsubishi pickup trucks to the party’s Regional Communication Officers.

This donation, made on behalf of the party’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, is intended to acknowledge the efforts of the officers and improve their ability to advance the party’s agenda.

The trucks will be allocated to the regions of Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Bono, Bono East, Western, and Greater Accra.

In a post on social media, Gyamfi expressed his hope that this contribution would inspire the officers to effectively promote the party’s policies and help secure a significant win in the upcoming December 7 elections.

He also mentioned that a previous donation of four Mitsubishi pickups to the Savannah, Ashanti, Eastern, and Volta regions is already proving beneficial.

In addition, over 140 motorcycles have been distributed to Constituency Communication Officers nationwide.

Gyamfi conveyed his appreciation to former President John Dramani Mahama for his ongoing support and leadership of the National Communications Bureau (NCB).

Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has set the dates for two presidential debates on October 22 and November 19, 2024.

These events are part of several political engagements planned ahead of the December 7 elections.

In a recent statement, the IEA revealed that, in addition to the two presidential debates, a vice presidential debate is scheduled for November 5, 2024, along with five “Evening Encounters” designed to engage political leaders.

The first of these encounters will take place on Wednesday, September 18, with the final one set for Tuesday, October 15.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indicated that their presidential candidate will not participate, citing concerns over the trustworthiness of the IEA as the organising body.

  • Germany to accept 250,000 Kenyan workers under new labor agreement

Germany to accept 250,000 Kenyan workers under new labor agreement

Germany has reached a landmark agreement with Kenya to welcome 250,000 skilled and semi-skilled workers under a targeted labour migration deal.

This initiative is designed to address Germany’s growing shortage of skilled labour while offering new opportunities to Kenyan professionals.

The deal comes at a time when Kenya faces challenges in providing sufficient employment and income for its young workforce. As part of the agreement, five Kenyan bus drivers have already begun working in Flensburg, Germany, as part of a pilot project.

This migration agreement is part of Germany’s broader strategy to manage immigration effectively. It also includes provisions for simplifying the repatriation process for Kenyans residing in Germany without legal status.

Germany’s approach to immigration has been a hot topic, especially with the rise of the far-right anti-immigration party, Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The country has experienced significant waves of immigration, including over a million people during the 2015-2016 migrant crisis and 1.2 million Ukrainians since the start of Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

The labour deal was formalised in Berlin by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Kenyan President William Ruto. As part of the agreement, Germany has agreed to relax some of its immigration laws to facilitate Kenyan employment in its economy.

Kenyan workers will also benefit from extended temporary residence permits if they secure approved jobs, and long-term visas will be available for those wishing to study or undertake vocational training in Germany.

“On the expiry of the long-stay visa, Kenyans may receive a temporary residence permit for study purposes in Germany for up to two years,” the agreement states.

The temporary residence permit may be extended if the purpose of residence has not yet been achieved but is achievable within a “reasonable” period, it adds.

Under the new deal, Kenya’s IT specialists will be permitted to work in Germany even without formal qualifications.

This agreement supports the immigration of skilled workers who have completed vocational training or hold university degrees, provided their qualifications are recognised by the relevant authorities in either country.

The agreement also outlines procedures for the readmission and return of citizens between Kenya and Germany. It includes strict measures to prevent and combat labour exploitation, forced labour, and human trafficking.

During the welcome ceremony for the five Kenyan drivers in Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein’s Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen emphasised Germany’s need for dedicated workers and innovative minds. He expressed that Germany is eager to benefit from the skills and expertise of these new arrivals.

“We simply have to position ourselves in Germany in such a way that it is attractive to come here,” Mr Madsen added.

The drivers are the first batch of Kenyan workers, who will be trained by the Aktiv bus company in a pilot project, hoping to get a job in Germany.

Doctors, nurses, and teachers are among those expected to take part in the programme.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) said the deal was expected to significantly increase access to decent foreign jobs for Kenyan workers in Germany and address labour shortages in Germany.

“It includes mechanisms to protect the rights and welfare of Kenyan migrant workers in Germany, ensuring safe, orderly, and productive migration,” ILO added in a statement.

But there are concerns about a brain drain in Kenya with professionals like doctors and nurses going abroad for jobs, leaving local hospitals with a huge shortage of medical workers.

“It is sad that we are going to service other countries at the expense of our own country,” Ekuru Aukot, a Kenyan lawyer and politician, told the BBC’s Newsday programme.

But Roseline Njogu, a senior foreign affairs official, said Kenya was simply responding to the global labour market demands.

“We have a youth bulge in Kenya, and every year we have a million people joining the local labour market. It takes time and resources to create job opportunities at home,” she added.

  • Postecoglou appeals for empathy during the Bentancur’s racing incident probe

Postecoglou appeals for empathy during the Bentancur’s racing incident probe

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou defended Rodrigo Bentancur after the Uruguayan midfielder faced backlash for a controversial comment about his teammate Son Heung-Min.

Bentancur, during a June TV interview in Uruguay, made an offensive remark suggesting that all East Asians look alike, referencing Son.

Recognising the mistake, Bentancur has since apologised, and Postecoglou has urged leniency as the English Football Association considers disciplinary action.

Bentancur could face a suspension if found guilty of violating conduct rules.

South Korea captain Son posted on social media after the incident that he had accepted Bentancur’s apology and the pair remain “brothers.”.

“We need to let the process sort of play out now. Rodri is well aware of the ramifications of any outcome of the panel,” Postecoglou said on Friday at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Arsenal this weekend.

“In terms of Sonny and Rodri, they had their discussions about the whole incident, and both players understand and respect each other’s position.”

Postecoglou added his belief that any sanction must also come with the opportunity for players to learn from their mistakes.

“We try along the way as human beings to do the right thing all the time, but it doesn’t always happen,” added the Australian.

“We all make mistakes. As I’ve said before, for me it is not just about punishment, but it is an opportunity for people to atone and to learn.

“If we’re talking about having a society that is understanding and tolerant of everything, we must also show that to people who make mistakes as Rodri has made in this time.”

Rodrigo Bentancur is set to be available for Sunday’s highly anticipated North London derby.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou also received positive updates on the injury front, with defender Micky Van de Ven and new signing Dominic Solanke expected to rejoin the squad.

Both players had been absent for Spurs’ 2-1 loss to Newcastle before the international break but are now ready to return, boosting Tottenham’s options for the crucial clash against their city rivals.

Mbappe and Vinicius unperturbed by criticisms; they are happy – Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has expressed confidence in Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior despite their slow start to the season.

Mbappé recently found his rhythm, scoring twice in his latest match after going goalless in his first three La Liga appearances.

Vinícius, meanwhile, has netted once in four matches. Ancelotti emphasized that both players are staying focused and unaffected by outside criticism, showing resilience as they aim to hit peak form in the coming games.

“They don’t seem affected to me, they are training well, happy. Kylian is progressing each day,” Ancelotti told a news conference Friday.

“Many forget they started pre-season in the middle of August… they didn’t have a pre-season, they have improved their fitness with games. They seem very well to me, and happy.”

French superstar Mbappe joined Madrid at the end of his Paris Saint-Germain contract this summer and Ancelotti is still working out how to get the best from the forward, who like Vinicius, prefers to drift in from the left.

Thus far Mbappe has started in the middle with Vinicius in his preferred position, but the Brazilian has lacked spark.

“(Vinicius is) not at his best, but he’s still very important for us,” continued Ancelotti.

“The last thing I’m worried about is the state of Vinicius, he always works well, it’s just a question of time before he’s at his best.

“When a player is not 100 per cent, the important thing is that he gives all he can.”

Real Madrid will face Real Sociedad on Saturday in a La Liga clash, followed by their first Champions League fixture of the season at home against Stuttgart on Tuesday.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti revealed that Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni, two key midfielders, will not be available for the trip to San Sebastian.

However, he remains hopeful that both players could make their return shortly after the weekend, likely in time for the Champions League match.

“We’ll see in the next few days if they’re available on Tuesday,” added Ancelotti.

  • A message from Prince Harry ahead of his 40th birthday

A message from Prince Harry ahead of his 40th birthday

Milestone birthdays often prompt moments of self-reflection, and Prince Harry seems to be in that contemplative space as he nears his 40th birthday this weekend.

The Duke of Sussex has released a statement to the BBC ahead of turning 40 on Sunday, September 15. In it, he has said he is “excited” about the milestone and that his children have given him a “fresh perspective.”

He also told the broadcaster that his mission to “continue showing up and doing good in the world” would continue whatever his age. “I was anxious about 30, I’m excited about 40,” the BBC quotes Prince Harry as saying.

Over the past decade, Prince Harry’s life has undergone a dramatic transformation. He transitioned from his military service and royal duties to stepping away from both roles to pursue a new direction.

Now 40, married with two children, Harry shared with the BBC that fatherhood has brought him a “new perspective” and is “one of life’s greatest joys.”

Though he seeks to keep Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, away from the media glare, Harry remains active in public life outside the monarchy.

The Invictus Games, which he launched in 2014 during his time as a royal, remains central to his efforts. Additionally, he and Meghan have established Archewell, their charitable organisation with a “simple” mission to “show up, do good.”

Since moving to the U.S., Prince Harry has been in the public eye, not only for his charitable efforts but also for his personal revelations.

His memoir Spare offered a candid look at his life, while a Netflix series explored his and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal duties.

Over the past few years, Harry has also been involved in multiple legal battles, including lawsuits against British tabloids and challenging the UK Home Office over his personal security arrangements.

  • Inter and AC Milan reject the idea of renovating the historic San Siro

Inter and AC Milan reject the idea of renovating the historic San Siro

Inter and AC Milan on Friday rejected the project to modernise and restructure the iconic San Siro stadium, which they share, city mayor Giuseppe Sala announced.

“The two clubs said no to the restructuring of San Siro proposed by (construction group) WeBuild,” Sala said after a meeting with officials of the two northern Italian clubs.

“They provided detailed analyses of technical and economic feasibility, and their conclusions are that this project cannot be carried out at a sustainable cost and that they do not wish to move in this direction.”

The two clubs would, however, be ready to relaunch the initial project of a new stadium in the immediate vicinity of San Siro, according to Sala.

“We are not starting from scratch on this subject, but there is resistance from local residents,” Sala pointed out.

“They must present us with a project within a fairly short time frame, but building stadiums in Italy is never easy; it is always very complex.”

In an effort to boost their commercial revenue, AC Milan and Inter Milan, who together have won 10 European titles, have announced plans to leave the San Siro, which is owned by the city of Milan.

Officially named the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, the iconic 80,000-seat venue, built in 1926, no longer aligns with the modern needs of the two clubs.

Both teams are actively pursuing new stadium projects.

Earlier this year, AC Milan acquired land in the suburb of San Donato Milanese, located southeast of Milan, with plans to relocate outside the city’s official boundaries.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan is exploring locations in the towns of Rozzano and Assago, south of Milan, and has also considered building on industrial land in the northern suburb of Sesto San Giovanni.

Despite these developments, the San Siro remains scheduled to host major events, including the opening ceremony of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and potentially the 2027 Champions League final.

However, uncertainty surrounding the stadium’s future could jeopardise these plans, as reported by the Italian media.

  • Valencia’s Rafa Mir to miss two games after sexual assault allegations

Valencia’s Rafa Mir to miss two games after sexual assault allegations

Valencia’s head coach, Ruben Baraja, announced on Friday that striker Rafa Mir, 27, will miss two upcoming matches following allegations of sexual assault made against him last week.

Mir was taken into custody on September 2nd after two women filed a complaint, accusing him and another man of the crime. A judge has since ordered Mir’s conditional release as investigations continue to determine whether there is sufficient evidence for a trial.

On Monday, Valencia confirmed they had initiated disciplinary actions against Mir while maintaining the presumption of innocence. Baraja shared the club’s decision with reporters on Friday.

“It is a moment in which there is a club decision in which I cannot and should not participate because my role is in the sporting sphere, and the club decides to reinstate him,” explained Baraja.

“This week, he is training on the sidelines, and next week he will be reincorporated with the group.

“Once the two-game sanction is over, he will be part of the group like any other player, and I will decide if he plays or not.”

The striker will miss Valencia’s visit to face Atletico Madrid on Saturday in LaLiga and a home clash against Girona next week.

Mir, who has also played for English team Wolves, has denied committing sexual assault.

“Throughout this whole process there have been situations in which it is very difficult to make a Solomonic decision that everyone likes, but we have tried to do things with common sense,” continued Baraja.

“As a coach, it seems to me that an act of indiscipline has to have consequences, not only for him but also for the health of the group.

“This gives us the chance to understand that a person can make mistakes, can have a day when he doesn’t do things right and we have to give him a second chance.”

Mir joined Valencia in July on loan from Sevilla, who signed him in 2021.

  • Man City risk a 100-point deduction in 115-charge FFP case – Financial expert

Man City risk a 100-point deduction in 115-charge FFP case – Financial expert

Manchester City could face a severe 100-point deduction, potentially leading to their relegation, as they prepare for the Financial Fair Play hearing set to commence on Monday.

The reigning Premier League champions, who have secured the title in the last four seasons, are accused of breaching financial rules from 2009 over a nine-year span.

If found guilty of financial misconduct, the club may be subjected to penalties ranging from hefty fines to possible expulsion from the Premier League. The case is expected to conclude by the end of the year.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has told talkSPORT of the possible consequences for City if all of the charges brought against them hold up in a legal battle: “It can’t be a financial punishment; that would make everybody think the whole thing was a waste of time.

If you take a look at the hearing at both Everton and Nottingham Forest, the commissions both said this is a minor breach of the rules.

“Now if the allegations against Manchester City are proven, that surely has to be a major breach of the rules, effectively that the club misrepresented the money coming into the club.

The club have also been accused of disguising payments to players and managers through third-parties, effectively being paid offshore via Abu Dhabi for services provided by members of staff.

That is also completely against the rules, one would think, although it could be that it’s within the Premier League rules so we would have to be looking at a very significant points deduction.

“If all 115 charges are proven, then you would imagine the points deduction would be somewhere in the region of 60-100 points on the basis that they would want the club to suffer enough to be heading out of the division.”

Manchester City have consistently asserted their innocence and are determined to challenge the Financial Fair Play allegations to clear their name.

Should the Premier League impose sanctions, any appeals could extend the case into 2025. If the club faces expulsion from the Premier League, it would mark their first time outside the top division since the 2001-02 season.

  • Nicolas Jackson extends Chelsea contract until 2033

Nicolas Jackson extends Chelsea contract until 2033

Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2033, the club confirmed on Friday.

The 23-year-old initially made the move to Chelsea from Villareal in June 2023 on an eight-year deal. Jackson made an impact by netting 17 goals across all competitions in his first season.

This year, he has already scored twice in four matches.

“I am feeling very good and am very happy to sign a new contract and stay at the club,” Jackson said in a statement.

“It feels great the club has confidence in me. I am working very hard. I am very happy to extend my contract and stay here for many years.”
