Bruno Fernandes acts like a ‘diva’ sometimes -Emmanuel Petit

Emmanuel Petit has criticised Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, calling him a “diva” and suggesting that Kobbie Mainoo could be the future leader of the team.

The former Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona star praised Fernandes for his skill with the ball but questioned his suitability as captain due to his on-field conduct.

Petit noted that Fernandes frequently displays frustration towards his teammates during difficult moments, pointing to his behavior during United’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool in March 2023 as a prime example of his unsatisfactory leadership.

During an interview on Drive, Petit remarked: “I think he’s a good player, but I think he’s a diva.

He acts like a diva sometimes, not like a captain – he wears the armband, but if I’m honest with you, if I’m a teammate in the dressing room and you see the way he’s behaving sometimes on the pitch with his arms all the time complaining, you don’t want that from your captain.

You don’t want that from your teammate and you don’t expect that from your leaders.”

Petit suggested that Fernandes’ performance and demeanour have changed since signing his new bumper contract at Old Trafford.

“I was very impressed during COVID-19 without fans in the ground because he was amazing game after game,” he said. “But he signed a new contract and I saw him with Portugal as well and sometimes I get annoyed when I watch him on TV.

I just want to get into the TV and just play in front of him as an opponent to shake him on the pitch.”

When asked who he would choose as Manchester United captain instead of Fernandes, Petit had a surprising suggestion.

He highlighted Kobbie Mainoo, a rising star in United’s ranks, as a potential future leader as the 18-year-old has impressed many with his mature performances and calmness on the field.

“It’s hard to find the right leader in the team, but the best player so far this season is the youngest one or even (Alejandro) Garnacho,” Petit said, referring to Mainoo.

“I think Mainoo has the potential to wear the armband but he’s too young.”

Bruno Fernandes’ exceptional vision has established him as the key orchestrator in Manchester United’s midfield, with the Portuguese star racking up an impressive 79 goals and 67 assists across 237 games.

He is set to return to action in their upcoming match against newly-promoted Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, September 14.

  • Legon Stadium isn’t fit to host Black Stars games; this is why

Legon Stadium isn’t fit to host Black Stars games; this is why

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has sparked controversy on social media after proposing that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) consider using the University of Ghana Stadium for Black Stars’ home matches.

Critics were quick to condemn the suggestion, pointing out that the UG Stadium does not comply with the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) standards for hosting Category 3 matches.

The ministry’s proposal comes as officials scramble to find a replacement venue after CAF revoked approval for Baba Yara Stadium to host the remaining 2025 AFCON qualifiers in Ghana.

The UG Stadium was recently upgraded for the 13th African Games, where it served as the primary venue for athletics and some football events. Additionally, it has hosted the Men’s MTN FA Cup final and the Women’s Malta Guinness Cup final.

Despite these improvements, the stadium only qualifies to host CAF Category 2 matches.

Here are three reasons why the UG Stadium does not meet the required standard to host a CAF Category 3 match:

    Capacity

One of the key factors for hosting a CAF Category 3 match is the stadium’s seating capacity. The UG Stadium, however, falls short of this requirement.

According to CAF’s updated guidelines from 2022, stadiums must have a seating capacity of 30,000. In contrast, the UG Stadium has only 11,000 seats, which immediately disqualifies it.

Additionally, the limited capacity affects other critical areas, such as the size of the VIP and VVIP sections, which also do not meet the necessary standards for hosting such high-profile games.

    Dressing Room

CAF’s guidelines for Category 3 matches mandate that dressing rooms must have 25 seats and lockers.

In comparison, the dressing room at the UG Stadium is smaller and only provides 21 seats and lockers, falling short of the required standards.

    Media Area

According to CAF, the media area for category 3 games should covered and have big desks that could accommodate a laptop and a notepad.

In contrast, the media area at the UG Stadium is exposed as required and is not spacious either as the individual desks provided are in small size and cannot accommodate a laptop and a notepad.

  • “He is entitled to his opinion” – Ten Hag on Ronaldo’s criticism over ambition

“He is entitled to his opinion” – Ten Hag on Ronaldo’s criticism over ambition

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has shrugged off the latest criticism from Cristiano Ronaldo, maintaining that external opinions don’t affect him or the club.

Ronaldo, during a podcast interview with former United teammate Rio Ferdinand, took issue with Ten Hag’s comments from a pre-season interview in the Netherlands.

The United boss had remarked that the club was “a long way away” from reclaiming the Premier League title, which they last won in 2013.

While Ronaldo agreed that United were not in a position to challenge for the title, he believed that as manager, Ten Hag’s message lacked the right tone.

When asked about Ronaldo’s remarks ahead of Manchester United’s upcoming match against Southampton, Ten Hag appeared unfazed, noting that Ronaldo had essentially echoed the same sentiment.

“No, he said this, if you read the article very well,” said Ten Hag.

“He is entitled to his opinion. It’s OK. He is far away in Saudi Arabia, far away from Manchester.”

After back-to-back losses against Brighton and Liverpool, Manchester United now face Southampton, fully aware that another defeat would mark their worst start to a season since 1986-87, when Ron Atkinson was dismissed and Sir Alex Ferguson took the reins.

Erik ten Hag provided updates ahead of the crucial fixture, confirming that full-back Luke Shaw remains sidelined.

Shaw, despite featuring three times for England in Euro 2024, has yet to play for United this season.

Additionally, striker Rasmus Hojlund is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during United’s pre-season tour of the United States, ruling him out of action once again.

However, new signing Manuel Ugarte is available for selection.

The £50.2 million Uruguayan midfielder returned from international duty on Thursday and is ready to join the squad.

As Ten Hag prepares for the game, speculation around his future continues to swirl following United’s poor start. Some observers doubt the Dutchman will last the full season, particularly with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s increasing influence at the club.

Despite the growing scrutiny, Ten Hag remains unfazed, stating that the external “noise” doesn’t affect him, having recently returned from leading a charity match with his former club FC Utrecht. The manager is focused solely on getting United back on track.

Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo named Bournemouth’s Player of the Month

Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has been named Bournemouth’s Player of the Month for August, following a standout start to the Premier League season.

Semenyo claimed the award in commanding fashion, securing 67.8% of the fan vote, outpacing fellow nominees Dango Ouattara, Luis Sinisterra, and Marcus Tavernier.

The 24-year-old’s contributions have been key to Bournemouth’s early campaign, with two goals and an assist in his tally.

Remarkably, Semenyo is one of just four players in the entire Premier League to register a goal involvement in all three matches during August.

As Bournemouth prepare to host Chelsea at the Vitality Stadium in their next fixture, the in-form Semenyo will be eager to continue his impressive run and make a lasting impact.

  • Hosting a qualifier outside Ghana is a national embarrassment – Stephen Appiah

Hosting a qualifier outside Ghana is a national embarrassment – Stephen Appiah

Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, has voiced his concern over the possibility of Ghana playing its home games at neutral venues, calling it a national embarrassment.

In a post on X, the legendary midfielder expressed that unless it’s for major tournaments, there should be no reason for Ghana to play its home fixtures outside the country.

He urged football authorities to prioritise maintaining the nation’s football pride by ensuring that the Black Stars always have a proper home ground to defend.

Appiah stressed the importance of upholding Ghana’s reputation in the global football arena, emphasising that playing home games at neutral venues undermines the country’s football heritage and pride.

“Playing a qualifier outside Ghana, except in a tournament, is a national embarrassment. We must prioritise hosting our own games and protect our football pride,” he wrote.

The Black Stars are at risk of playing their remaining home games in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations at a neutral venue after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew its approval of Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The Baba Yara Stadium was the only standardised venue in Ghana to host international matches, but the pitch and other facilities have deteriorated, causing CAF’s disapproval.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are now without a win in two games in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, losing 1-0 to Angola in Kumasi before a 1-1 draw against Niger in Morocco.

Angola leads the group with 6 points, followed by Sudan with 3, while Ghana and Niger are both tied with a point each at the bottom.

  • It’s a-wake-up call for authorities – Karim Zito on CAF ban

It’s a-wake-up call for authorities – Karim Zito on CAF ban

Dreams FC head coach, Abdul Karim Zito, sees the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) recent ban on Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium as a much-needed wake-up call for the country’s football authorities.

CAF revoked its approval of the iconic stadium, citing ongoing concerns with the playing surface, leaving Ghana scrambling to find an alternative venue outside the country for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Zito, who also serves as the coach for Ghana’s national U19 team, believes this decision should push football authorities to confront and resolve the long-standing issues affecting the nation’s sporting infrastructure, particularly the poor state of its pitches.

He emphasised the impact these substandard playing conditions have on players’ performance, especially for the Black Stars.

According to Zito, players who are used to world-class facilities abroad struggle to adapt when forced to compete on deteriorating pitches at home, affecting both their comfort and gameplay.

While the ban is a blow to Ghanaian football, Zito hopes it will prompt lasting improvements in stadium management across the country.

“Our players are used to quality pitches outside, so they feel uncomfortable when they come home to play, as they are afraid of getting injured,” he told Joy Sports.

Reflecting on the Angola match, he pointed out how the poor pitch affected Abdul Mumin’s failed clearance, leading to a goal.

“For these reasons, I’m okay with the CAF ban because it will force us to do the right thing,” Zito added, expressing hope that this move will lead to much-needed improvements in Ghana’s football infrastructure.

Amend laws regulating financing of political campaigns in Ghana – GII

Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has called for a major overhaul of Ghana’s electoral laws to provide greater transparency on political party funding.

The organisation has expressed concerns about the potential misuse of illicit funds, including those from illegal mining (galamsey), fraud, and money laundering, by political parties and candidates seeking power, according to myjoyonline.com.

Executive Director of GII, Mary Addah, suggested that political leaders may be reluctant to address illegal mining due to their own involvement or benefits received from such activities.

She said, “It is increasingly becoming apparent that we need to have a regime that regulates our campaigning that also regulates how we get money into our politics or to campaign.

“Both the Political Parties Act and the constitution did not envisage some of these because we believe that we are honest and very great people who believe in volunteering, and so we didn’t envisage some of these things.”

The Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has highlighted that the current Political Parties Act contains significant loopholes that allow for unrestricted campaign financing.

To address this issue, GII plans to focus on monitoring and tracking incidents of vote-buying, campaign finance abuse, and misuse of incumbency in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.

This initiative is part of a new project designed to gather data on these violations and enhance transparency in political funding.

“The Ghana Initiative Consortium has put together the project, and it is intended to monitor campaigns, and spending, track their abuse of incumbency, and document instances of vote buying during the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, she stated.

  • NPP confirms former independent candidate Amoako Asiamah as Fomena Parliamentary candidate

NPP confirms former independent candidate Amoako Asiamah as Fomena Parliamentary candidate

New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially selected Andrew Amoako Asiamah, the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, as their 2024 parliamentary candidate for Fomena.

This endorsement came during a National Executive Council meeting, where the decision received unanimous support.

The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, conveyed the party’s enthusiasm over Asiamah’s endorsement to the constituency’s leadership on Thursday.

Chairman Wontumi highlighted the significant support Asiamah has provided the party, noting his current role as the independent MP for Fomena.

Expressing confidence in Asiamah’s candidature, Chairman Wontumi emphasised that his return to the NPP fold signals a promising future for the Fomena constituency.

He commended Asiamah for his unwavering dedication and the positive impact he has had on the party’s image in Parliament.

According to Chairman Wontumi, Asiamah’s candidature is more than just a routine move; it represents a strong step towards victory for both the constituency and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In response, the 2nd Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, expressed deep emotion, sharing how much he had missed everything about the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a party he has always held dear to his heart.

With renewed enthusiasm, Asiamah pledged his full commitment to leading the party to a historic landslide victory, not only for himself but also for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the Fomena constituency.

Asiamah urged party members and supporters to set aside any past grievances and come together to work for the greater good of the NPP.

He emphasized that unity and focus were crucial at this time. What truly mattered, he noted, was for leaders in the constituency, especially Assembly members, to actively campaign on the many ongoing projects in Fomena.

By showcasing these developments, he believed they could attract more votes and strengthen the party’s position in the upcoming elections.

The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), accompanied Asiamah on a visit to several communities within the Fomena constituency, including Adokwai, Dompoase, and Old Edubiase.

During these visits, they engaged with local residents, urging them to continue supporting the NPP as the December 7 elections approached, highlighting the importance of retaining the party in power for the benefit of the entire region.

  • Why men can’t accuse anyone of rape under Ghana’s law

Why men can’t accuse anyone of rape under Ghana’s law

Recent discussions on Ghana’s legal framework regarding rape, have highlighted concerns over its effectiveness in protecting and delivering justice for men who may be victims of sexual assault.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the EYA Foundation for African Leaders, Dr. Esther Yesutor, has called for significant reforms in Ghana’s constitution to address this issue. She argues that the current legal definitions and protections are inadequate for male victims of sexual violence.

During a recent discussion on sexual assault, Dr. Yesutor criticized this limitation, pointing out that the prevailing legal definitions fail to address the realities faced by male victims.

She stated, “You think that sexual abuse is mostly a female thing. But when you pick 71 men, at least one of them has been sexually abused.

But the unfortunate thing about our part of the world, especially in Ghana, is that men cannot be raped. So if you are a man in Ghana and somebody has sex with you without your consent, you cannot regard that as rape, so you get no justice for that.”

Under Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29), specifically Section 98 of Chapter 6 on Sexual Offences, the term “rape” is narrowly defined as the “carnal knowledge of a female” without her consent.

This gender-specific definition excludes men from being recognized as victims of rape under the current legal framework.

For reference, Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act outlines rape and other sexual offences as follows: Section 97 defines rape as a first-degree felony, with imprisonment ranging from five to twenty-five years. Section 98 specifies that rape is the carnal knowledge of a female aged sixteen or above without her consent.

Section 99 requires proof of at least the slightest degree of penetration for an offence to be considered rape. Section 102 addresses carnal knowledge of individuals with mental incapacity, imposing imprisonment for a term of five to twenty-five years.

Dr. Esther Yesutor has made a clarion call for legal adjustments to better encompass and protect all victims of sexual violence, regardless of gender.

She emphasized, “Rape can only be perpetrated by people who have a penis. How? If a woman forces herself on you, that is sexual assault and not rape, and I think our lawyers would have to do something about that.”

The limitations in the current legal framework have been associated with underreporting and lack of comprehensive data on male victims of sexual violence. Societal attitudes and stigma contribute to the difficulties in documenting and addressing these cases effectively in the country.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez banned from driving after two driving offences, fined £3,020 – Report

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has been hit with a driving ban and a £3,020 fine following a series of traffic violations, Sky Sports reports.

Fernandez was convicted after missing a court appearance and was found guilty of failing to identify the driver of a vehicle linked to the offenses.

“Enzo Fernandez has been disqualified from driving following two driving offences and was fined a total of £3,020, including costs, at Llanelli Magistrates Court after he was found guilty of failing to identify the driver of a Porsche Cayenne on Dec 27, last year [2023],” Sky Sports reported as shared by Vince on X.

Fernandez has struggled with a tough start to the 2024/2025 English Premier League season amid Chelsea’s lackluster performance.

Despite the team’s challenges, he has taken on a key leadership role as vice-captain and has stepped in as captain for several matches this season.

  • “We are not paying” – PSG tells Mbappe in new ruling over the €55m unpaid wages case

“We are not paying” – PSG tells Mbappe in new ruling over the €55m unpaid wages case

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been ordered to pay Kylian Mbappe €55 million in unpaid wages following a ruling by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) on Thursday.

The decision comes after Mbappe filed a legal claim against his former club, asserting he was owed this amount.

Attempts to resolve the issue through mediation were declined by Mbappe on Wednesday, leading to the LFP’s directive for PSG to compensate the France striker for three months’ salary and the final third of a promised bonus, according to RMC Sport.

Mbappe’s departure from PSG was marked by dissatisfaction and broken promises, ending a turbulent tenure at the Parc des Princes.

His exit on a free transfer this summer has already been a significant blow to PSG, considering his status as one of the top players globally.

The additional €55 million payout compounds the loss. Despite this, PSG has announced its intention to contest the ruling and pursue further legal recourse.

In response to the LFP’s verdict, PSG issued a four-word message to Mbappe: “We are not paying.”

The French club told the AP, via ESPN: “In light of the limitations of the commission’s legal scope to take a complete decision on this matter, the matter must now be contested in another legal forum, to which Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to present all the facts over the coming months and year.”

They added: “As a matter of law and fact, the player has made clear, repeated public and private commitments that must be respected, having been afforded unprecedented benefits by the club over seven years in Paris.

And the club looks forward to these being upheld in the proper forum, if the player seeks to pursue this incomprehensibly reputationally damaging matter further, in due course.”

We haven’t heard the last of this, then. While PSG’s lawyers will be busy plotting their next legal move, Mbappe is preparing for Real Madrid’s meeting with Real Sociedad on Saturday evening.

  • Sports Ministry instructs GFA to seek CAF approval for Accra, Legon stadia inspections

Sports Ministry instructs GFA to seek CAF approval for Accra, Legon stadia inspections

Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) has directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to urgently request the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to inspect two major stadiums in Accra for possible approval as alternative venues for upcoming international matches.

This comes in response to CAF’s decision to revoke the Category 3 status of the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, following concerns over the poor state of its playing surface.

In a statement released on September 12, 2024, the Ministry emphasised the need for CAF to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the newly constructed University of Ghana Stadium.

These venues are being considered for approval as Category 3 match sites, which would allow them to host the Black Stars’ next international fixture scheduled for October.

CAF’s withdrawal of approval for the Baba Yara Stadium came after a post-inspection, which highlighted issues such as poor drainage, uneven surfaces, and insufficient grass cover on the pitch.

These problems were flagged during the September 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifier between Ghana and Angola, rendering the stadium unsuitable for international competition.

In light of this development, the Ministry has tasked the National Sports Authority (NSA) with addressing the pitch issues at the Baba Yara Stadium. In the meantime, the focus has shifted to ensuring that alternative venues in Accra are brought up to CAF standards.

The Accra Sports Stadium, which has undergone significant improvements since its last inspection, has resolved most of the issues previously identified by CAF. Meanwhile, the University of Ghana Stadium, which has successfully hosted CAF Category 2 matches, is awaiting assessment for Category 3 certification.

The Ministry expressed optimism that both stadiums would meet the necessary requirements after CAF’s inspection and reaffirmed its commitment to upgrading sports infrastructure across the country.

Additionally, it noted that refurbishment efforts are ongoing at other national facilities, including the Cape Coast Stadium, as part of a wider initiative to elevate Ghana’s sports venues to international standards.

CAF has urged Ghanaian authorities to carry out comprehensive renovations at all major stadiums to comply with the technical specifications required for hosting international tournaments.

Ghana now faces the pressing challenge of securing CAF’s approval for suitable home venues in order to avoid playing upcoming AFCON qualifiers and other key international matches outside the country.

  • Kyle Walker, wife not back together; Annie still ‘traumatised’ by Man City star’s affair – Reports

Kyle Walker, wife not back together; Annie still ‘traumatised’ by Man City star’s affair – Reports

Kyle Walker is reportedly not back together with Annie Kilner and is currently sleeping in a separate room on the third floor of their £4 million mansion.

Walker had been asked to leave the family home over Christmas after news broke that he had fathered a second child with his former mistress, Lauryn Goodman.

While it was previously reported that Walker had returned to their Cheshire home, The Sun now claims that the couple has not reconciled, as Kilner is still “deeply scarred” by the affair.

Following the revelation of the affair, Walker issued a public apology and temporarily rented a nearby property. Despite the apology, their relationship has faced ongoing challenges, and progress towards reconciliation has been slow.

According to The Sun, Walker’s return to the family home is on a “trial basis” after several serious discussions during the summer. However, the future of their relationship remains uncertain.

“It reached a stage where they had to make a decision on their relationship,” a source said, according to the newspaper.

“It was unfair on everyone to drag it out any longer. They either had to make a go of it or move on. They’ve decided to see how things go. It’s on a trial basis.

Kyle’s been back for over a week now, and he’s sleeping in a separate bed on the third floor of the house. Annie is determined to do what she thinks is best for her kids.”

While another source added, “This year has been the toughest of their lives. There is still a huge amount of upset. It will be a work in progress for many years. But if they are to stand a chance, they both need to give it a go.”

As Kyle Walker navigates personal challenges at home, his professional career has also hit a rough patch. The Manchester City defender has struggled for game time this season, with his only appearance being a brief two-minute run against West Ham.

Adding to his woes, new England manager Lee Carsley left him out of the squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures, marking a significant setback for the veteran player.

Walker now faces stiff competition for a spot in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI, having fallen behind youngster Rico Lewis in the City lineup.

The Premier League champions are set to face Brentford in their next league clash on Saturday, where Walker will be hoping to regain his place in the team.

Rio Ferdinand’s reveals conversation with Ronaldo before he returned to Man Utd

Rio Ferdinand has shared a humorous anecdote about his former wife, a former TOWIE star, who was extremely upset with him after he took a late-night call from Cristiano Ronaldo.

The call came in at 1 a.m. in connection with Manchester United.

In the summer of 2021, Ronaldo, who was contemplating his future at Juventus, was reportedly considering a return to Manchester.

Although there was speculation about him joining Manchester City, a move that would have seen him reunite with Pep Guardiola, the deal did not materialise.

Manchester United, where Ronaldo initially made his name, refused to let their rival club sign him.

Instead, Ronaldo rejoined Manchester United, only to leave less than 18 months later following a disagreement with Dutch coach Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo was subsequently released as a free agent.

Former United teammate Ferdinand has been discussing a sensational retracing of steps to English football with Ronaldo, saying on the Portuguese’s YouTube channel: “We spoke on the phone when you were going to go and sign at Manchester United, when you were negotiating to come back, and my wife wanted to kill me!

It was 1 o’clock in the morning, and you rang me: ‘Rio, what’s going on? Can we sort this out?’ You ended up signing for United.

Initially, that must have been a beautiful thing for you because I remember on the phone you sounded so happy. Then obviously, it went a bit sour.”

Ronaldo responded by saying: “I don’t need to prove if I’m right or wrong; it is not my issue any more. I say what I have to say.

For me it is done. But to be honest, what I wish for Manchester is what I wish for me—the best—that they can make the best team they can. I love that club. I’m not that kind of guy that forgot the past.”

Ronaldo won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the first of his Golden Balls during a memorable first stint with United.

His reputation in the eyes of United supporters was tarnished somewhat by his acrimonious departure the second time around, but he will forever be remembered as another iconic No.7 at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

Ghana set to rest of home matches in Nigeria after Baba Yara Stadium suspension

Ghana faces a major setback after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) revoked the approval of the Baba Yara Stadium for upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

During its most recent inspection visit, CAF officials flagged numerous deficiencies, particularly the poor condition of the playing field.

Issues like uneven surfaces, poor drainage, and insufficient grass cover were cited as making the stadium unfit for competitive matches.

In light of the ongoing problems at the Baba Yara Stadium, along with similar concerns at the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadiums, CAF has instructed Ghana to select an alternative venue from a list of approved locations outside the country for Matchday 3 and 4 of the AFCON qualifiers in October.

According to Joy Sports sources, the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria, is emerging as the most likely alternative venue for Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers.

Its proximity to Ghana makes it a practical option, along with two other contenders in Côte d’Ivoire: the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny and the Stade de la Paix.

Other potential venues under consideration include the Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon, and the Berkane Municipal Stadium in Morocco, where Ghana previously faced Niger.

Ghana is expected to finalize and announce its decision to CAF in the coming days.

  • Man City’s 115-charge FFP hearing slated for Monday

Man City’s 115-charge FFP hearing slated for Monday

The start date for Manchester City’s 115-charge Financial Fair Play (FFP) case has been officially set, with the club now preparing to face judgement.

The Premier League champions were informed in early 2023, after an extensive investigation, that they would face charges related to alleged financial violations.

These accusations date back to 2009, soon after Sheikh Mansour took ownership of the club.

Manchester City is accused of failing to provide accurate financial information, including details about player and manager payments.

Despite these serious allegations, the club, which made history last season by winning its fourth consecutive Premier League title, denies any misconduct and is defending its position in an independent inquiry.

Reports have long suggested that Manchester City’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) hearing would start in September and conclude by the end of the year.

It has now been confirmed that the proceedings will commence on Monday, September 16th.

Once all evidence has been presented and arguments heard, a final verdict will be reached.

Speculation has grown around potential consequences for City, which could include point deductions similar to those imposed on Everton and Nottingham Forest last season, significant fines, or even relegation from the Premier League.

However, there is also a possibility that City could escape punishment as they continue to fight the charges in an attempt to clear their name.

The case’s resolution is not guaranteed to conclude by the end of 2025, especially if appeals prolong the process into the new year and beyond.

  • This is why Barca didn’t go ahead with Nico Williams’ signing

This is why Barca didn’t go ahead with Nico Williams’ signing

Barcelona’s Sporting Director, Deco, has shed light on why the club chose not to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams during the recent transfer window, despite the young star being one of the most coveted attackers.

Williams, who boasts Ghanaian roots, attracted interest from top European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, following a standout season.

The winger featured in 31 La Liga matches, netting 5 goals and providing 11 assists, while also playing a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory.

Despite his rising profile, Deco revealed that Barcelona decided against pursuing Williams, citing the club’s already strong lineup of attacking players as the primary reason.

“We didn’t sign Nico Williams as we have Raphinha, Ferran, Ansu, Lamine, plus Fermin and Olmo to help there,” he said.

Sporting Director Deco further highlighted that Dani Olmo’s versatility lessened the need for Barcelona to sign another winger. “Dani Olmo offers us more flexibility, making it unnecessary to bring in another wide player,” he explained.

Although Williams was on Barcelona’s radar, the talented winger ultimately stayed with Athletic Bilbao, where he is under contract until 2027.

His release clause, reportedly around €63 million (£53 million), may have also influenced Barcelona’s decision to hold back from making a move for the 22-year-old.

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has promised that all confiscated excavators from the government’s crackdown on illegal mining will be returned under a future NPP administration.

Addressing chiefs and locals in Prestea Huni Valley and Mpohor in the Western Region, Dr. Prempeh stressed that NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has no plans to outlaw small-scale mining.

His remarks come amidst growing calls for the government to ban small-scale mining due to the severe environmental impact, particularly the pollution of water bodies.

Dr. Prempeh reassured the mining communities that the NPP is focused on supporting small-scale miners, provided their activities are environmentally responsible.

He emphasised the party’s preference for regulating the sector over imposing a blanket ban.

“When the small-scale miners mine, they are able to get money to fend for their families. Small-scale miners vote for the NDC to win about 6 seats in Wassa, but now they [the NDC] say they will shoot and kill small-scale miners. Tell them the lies are enough. We will not shoot and kill anyone.

“We will give all seized excavators to you so you can do your work peacefully. This will help everyone to get money to fend for themselves and also for the community to develop. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will not collapse small-scale mining.

What we do not like is that you put a changfan on water bodies, but anyone interested in the government’s community mining scheme will be able to mine.”

Don’t politicise power; stop calling politicians to plead – ECG MD to debtors

Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has urged Ghanaians with outstanding debts to refrain from seeking help from politicians to settle their dues.

He expressed frustration over the practice of individuals relying on political figures to intercede on their behalf, describing it as inappropriate.

Mahama also lamented the tendency of some to politicize electricity matters because of their connections with influential leaders.

“I will appeal that we don’t politicise power. You go and take your money, then they try to call big politicians to intervene; let us not politicise power,” he is quoted as saying by 3news.com.

Meanwhile, speaking on how digitalisation has made their services easier and more convenient for Ghanaians, he noted that customers can now receive a new meter within just 7 days.

He,therefore, warned Ghanaians not to fall victim to middlemen who charge large amounts of money for their services.

“The online application for matter is effective, you can use *226 to apply. With the loss reduction programme, it should take you a minimum of one week to acquire the metre after payment. This is for a new service connection, you build a new house and need a meter, you will get it in seven days.

“We know that there are goroboys in the system and so we have started our premium service. If you need a meter immediately don’t pay to any goroboy.

“Under PURC single face, you pay GHC 1200 to ECG, you pay this online. The 3-phase metre is GHC 2300. I will urge the public to use the app or go to the ECG offices and pay what the PURC has approved. Let us use the right channels,” he added.

More children dropping out for ‘galamsey’ – GNAT laments worrying trend

General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), in a shocking revelation, highlighted the devastating effects of illegal mining, or “galamsey,” on Ghanaian children.

He revealed that 21% of children aged 5-17 are engaged in child labour, with 14% involved in hazardous activities.

The destruction of water sources due to galamsey has forced children to trek long distances in search of clean water, disrupting their education.

The contaminated water not only endangers their health but also exacerbates the cycle of poverty, stunting their mental development and pushing more children into labour.

As illegal mining destroys the environment, it’s also robbing Ghana of its future by increasing school dropouts, with children forced to choose between education and survival.

Musah called on the government to declare galamsey a national emergency by the end of September. Should the government fail to act, GNAT has warned of strikes that could severely impact the education system.

Musah emphasised that the crisis, particularly the pollution of water bodies, can no longer be ignored, and immediate action is needed to prevent long-term damage to the nation’s youth.

I have warned Osimhen about how he behaves – Jose Mourinho

Famed coach Jose Mourinho has taken issue with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen’s behaviour during matches.

While acknowledging Osimhen’s status as one of Africa’s best footballers, alongside Mohamed Salah, due to his exceptional abilities as a forward, Mourinho voiced concerns over Osimhen’s habit of diving in critical game situations.

He warned that such actions could harm the player’s image.

Mourinho, now managing Fenerbahçe SK, urged Osimhen to adjust his conduct on the field to ensure continued success in his football career.

“He is a fantastic player, but I don’t like the way he behaves, he dives too much. I told him, ‘You and Mo Salah are the best African players.

In the past, it was Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, and George Weah. You cannot behave like this.’ He dives too much,” Mourinho said, as shared on X.

After the breakdown of his transfer to Chelsea, Victor Osimhen has completed a loan move to Turkish club Galatasaray, with his salary fully taken care of.

Osimhen is aiming for a future transfer to Chelsea or another major European team, as he no longer sees a future at Napoli.

Paul Mullin marks Wrexham goal by wearing a Deadpool mask

Paul Mullin marked his goal for Wrexham on Tuesday night by putting on a mask of Deadpool, the superhero portrayed by the club’s co-owner, Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds, along with actor Rob McElhenney, co-owns Wrexham, a club that has achieved back-to-back promotions to reach League One, with Mullin playing a pivotal role in their success.

Paul Mullin has overcome an injury-plagued start to the 2024-25 campaign, making a strong return in Wrexham’s 2-1 victory over Salford City in the Football League Trophy on Tuesday.

Mullin struck first for Wrexham just 18 minutes into the match and celebrated in style, donning a Deadpool mask.

In the latest Deadpool film, titled Deadpool & Wolverine, Mullin portrays a character called “Welshpool,” a version of the superhero with a Welsh flag emblazoned on his costume.

Fellow Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer also makes a brief appearance in the film.

Mullin, 29, joined Wrexham in 2021 and has been a crucial figure in the club’s resurgence under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

  • “I’m happy because things are changing” – Ronaldo on current state of things at Old Traffford

“I’m happy because things are changing” – Ronaldo on current state of things at Old Traffford

There has been a lot of changes at Man United in recent months since the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and former Red Devils hero Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that he is “happy” to see changes are being made at the Premier League club.

The Portuguese star is a legend at the Manchester club having had two spells with the team, with the first going down having some of the best football the Old Trafford crowd has seen from an individual player.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner made 346 appearances for United, scoring 145 goals and assisting a further 64.

Ronaldo won everything in Manchester, and the club undoubtedly has a special place in his heart; however, the forward left the Premier League giants on a sour note after a falling out with current boss Erik ten Hag.

The 39-year-old has admitted on Rio Ferdinand’s Five Podcast that he is “not happy” with how things ended but is aware that he can’t control the past.

The Al-Nassr star said via Fabrizio Romano: “I’m not happy the way it all happened, but in the same way, we cannot control some points of our life sometimes, but it’s done, already done.”

One thing Ronaldo has been happy about is that change is occurring at Manchester United following the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, with Manchester United bringing in some top personnel such as Dan Ashworth and Omar Barrada.

Speaking about the changes that have occurred and continue to be made at Man United, Ronaldo has admitted that he is “happy” with this aspect of the club at present and understands that it will take time for the Manchester outfit to rebuild back to the top.

“Man United need time to rebuild because it’s still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change,” the superstar told Five. “They understand that. This is the only way.

“This is why they show, they start to change again, the structure of the club, the president, the infrastructures and everything.

“The owners of the club are investing in the training ground. I’m happy because things are changing.”

  • Pochettino takes over as head coach for USMNT

Pochettino takes over as head coach for USMNT

Argentinian soccer , Pochettinowho has led some of Europe’s top club teams over the past decade, has been named to lead the U.S. men’s national soccer team through a much-anticipated run at the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

“Mauricio is a serial winner with a deep passion for player development and a proven ability to build cohesive and competitive teams,” said Matt Crocker, U.S. Soccer’s sporting director.

After the U.S. team’s 0-1 defeat to Uruguay in a Copa America Group C match in Kansas City, Coach Gregg Berhalter was seen greeting goalkeeper Matt Turner, as the team faces elimination from the tournament.

The U.S. national team is now under increasing scrutiny, with many calling for Berhalter’s dismissal. The appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as the new coach would be a significant move, given his high-profile background.

Pochettino, known for his stints at top European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, is considered one of the most distinguished coaches ever to be considered for the U.S. men’s national team role.

While Pochettino began his coaching journey in Spain, his rise to prominence came in England with Tottenham Hotspur, where he revitalized the club’s fortunes in the latter half of the 2010s.

His subsequent roles at major clubs have only further solidified his impressive coaching credentials. The prospect of hiring Pochettino is seen as a major step up for a U.S. team traditionally managed by coaches from Major League Soccer.

“His passion for the game, his innovative approach to coaching, and his ability to inspire and connect with players make him the perfect fit for this role. We are excited to have him leading our Men’s National Team,” said U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone.

The 16th-ranked U.S. men’s soccer team is set to play a friendly against New Zealand on Tuesday night, but Mauricio Pochettino will not be at the helm for this match. Pochettino’s first games in charge will be in October, when the team faces Mexico and Panama.

Historically, the U.S. men’s team has underperformed on the international stage, often falling short against nations where soccer is the dominant sport.

Despite this, expectations remain high, especially with the U.S. set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Mexico and Canada.

The decision to part ways with Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed after the team’s recent struggles, was driven by the upcoming World Cup.

Berhalter, who took over the team six years ago following a failed qualification for the 2018 World Cup, had led the U.S. to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup, signaling some progress.

However, the team’s poor showing at this summer’s Copa América, where they did not advance past the group stage, led to growing dissatisfaction among fans and former players, resulting in Berhalter’s departure.

Ghana’s Football troubles started in 2014 -Afriyie Ankrah

Former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has voiced concerns over the declining state of sports in Ghana, which has sparked growing public unease.

He attributed the disorganisation within the sports sector to the underperformance of national teams in recent competitions.

According to Afriyie Ankrah, the problems plaguing Ghanaian football, particularly the Black Stars, stem from mismanagement that dates back to 2014.

Speaking to Oyerepa FM, he emphasised the urgent need for decisive action from authorities to restore and rejuvenate football in the country.

“The state of sports is in shambles. I’m not the one saying it; don’t you know? It may be hard to believe, especially with football, but the roots of the problem started in 2014,” he said in Twi when asked about the current state of sports in the country.

The poor performance of various teams and athletes has raised concerns about the management of sports in Ghana.

The Black Stars have struggled to maintain consistent performance, failing to secure a win in two matches for the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The athletics team also failed to win a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, adding to the woes of Ghanaian sports.

It remains to be seen how various sporting agencies will respond to restore the former glory of Ghanaian sports.

2014 World Cup: They must refund that money! – Afriyie Ankrah tells Ex-Black Stars players

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has voiced his displeasure with the Black Stars players from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, criticising them over financial disagreements.

Ankrah condemned the players for their refusal to participate in training until their bonuses were paid, accusing them of trying to damage the officials’ reputations internationally.

He has called on these players to repay the money to the government, citing their failure to advance past the group stage as a reason for their financial obligations.

“Let’s assume the money will be paid because the nation has never owed players; no matter how long it takes, it will eventually be paid. Why should you insist on not training and even miss two training sessions? Isn’t that sabotage?

“Then they took the money; they should refund the bloody money back to us. When they returned, there were no sanctions or enquiries, so that attitude persisted for seven years,” Ankrah said in Twi during an interview with Oyerepa FM.

Ghana’s national team did not advance past the group stage in the 2014 tournament, securing only one point from three matches.

Tensions rose before the final group game when players demanded $100,000 each in appearance fees, leading to threats of a boycott. This forced the government to arrange a direct flight to Brazil to resolve the issue.

Reports indicated that the main issue was the players’ demand for $100,000 in appearance fees, while the government offered $82,500.

When the players refused to train, the government had to meet their demands and provide cash, resulting in missed training sessions and ultimately, the team’s poor performance.

Those who appointed Otto Addo wasted our money – Countryman Songo

Controversial media personality Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo, has criticised the choice of Otto Addo as the head coach of the Black Stars, alleging that the decision has led to a decline in the nation’s revenue.

Songo did not specify the exact financial repercussions of Addo’s appointment but has called on Ghanaians to direct their frustrations over the team’s recent performance towards the committee responsible for hiring Addo.

He argued that the committee deviated from their stated requirement of selecting a coach with 15 years of experience, opting instead for a less experienced ‘scout.’

“All the persons who were involved in the selection of Otto Addo must go. They told us they needed someone with 15 years of experience, but they went for a trainer scout.

They went for someone who is using the Black Stars to master coaching. It is a big financial loss to the state. The committee members must be dealt with.”

Songo called for the head of Otto Addo and lashed out at the manager, labelling him as pompous.

“Otto Addo is not the only person who should be sacked. The only thing Otto Addo knows is speaking big English and snubbing people.

He pretends like he is a great coach who should not be criticised.

He blamed the pitch at Baba Yara for the defeat but drew with Niger on a good pitch.”

The Black Stars are now without a win in two games in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, losing 1-0 to Angola in Kumasi before a 1-1 draw against Niger in Morocco.

Angola leads the group with 6 points, followed by Sudan with 3, while Ghana and Niger are both tied with a point each at the bottom.

  • Over 150 dead in Vietnam as typhoon floods capital

Over 150 dead in Vietnam as typhoon floods capital

The death toll of Typhoon Yagi has risen to 152 in Vietnam, according to government estimates, as one of the country’s largest rivers reaches its highest level in two decades, flooding the streets of Hanoi.

By Wednesday, flood waters from the swollen Red River reached a meter high in parts of the capital, forcing some residents to navigate their neighbourhoods by boat.

Thousands of people have evacuated from low-lying areas of the city, and 10 of Hanoi’s 30 administrative districts are on “flood alert,” state media reported.
Floods and landslides across northern Vietnam have been the main causes of death from the typhoon, the government said.

“This is the worst flood I have seen,” Hanoi resident Tran Le Quyen told Reuters news agency. “It was dry yesterday morning. Now the entire street is flooded. We couldn’t sleep last night.”

Yagi, which was initially classified as a super typhoon—the equivalent of a category 5 hurricane—but later downgraded to a tropical depression, has continued to wreak havoc in Vietnam since making landfall on Saturday.

It has been described as Asia’s most powerful typhoon this year.

“My home is now part of the river,” Nguyen Van Hung, who lives in a neighbourhood on the banks of the Red River, told Reuters.

A devastating flash flood wiped out an entire village in northern Lao Cai province on Tuesday, leaving at least 25 confirmed dead. Rescue efforts are underway, with hundreds of soldiers dispatched to search for those still unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, authorities are closely monitoring a hydropower plant in Yen Bai province, as a massive influx of water into the dam’s reservoir raises fears of a potential collapse.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nguyen Hoang Hiep, assured the public on Wednesday that the plant remains stable but advised nearby residents to remain indoors as water levels could take up to two days to return to a safer level.

The flash floods were triggered by Typhoon Yagi, which has wreaked havoc across northern Vietnam for the past four days. On Monday, the storm destroyed a major bridge, sending ten cars and two scooters plunging into the Red River.

The typhoon has also caused widespread damage to homes, factories, and infrastructure, tearing off roofs and uprooting trees.

  • CAF revokes certification for Baba Yara Sports Stadium

CAF revokes certification for Baba Yara Sports Stadium

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revoked its certification of the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana, citing technical deficiencies, notably the poor condition of the pitch.

This decision follows CAF’s assessment of the venue after Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola, held on September 5, 2024. The inspection revealed that the stadium no longer meets the standards required to host Category 3 international fixtures.

CAF’s inspection team pointed to several issues with the playing surface, highlighting severe deterioration, uneven patches, poor drainage, and insufficient grass coverage, making it unsuitable for competitive matches.

Historically, the Baba Yara Stadium has accommodated many significant events, including World Cup qualifiers and AFCON matches, with its capacity to seat over 40,000 spectators.

CAF officials expressed disappointment at the venue’s current state, urging Ghanaian authorities to allocate resources for the necessary upgrades.

In a letter, the governing body also emphasised that previous warnings regarding the pitch’s condition had gone unanswered.

“It is important to note that, prior to the match, CAF had expressed concerns about the suitability of Baba Yara Sports Stadium for hosting top-tier international fixtures. Persistent issues at this venue, as well as others in Ghana, such as Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium, have also been noted.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NmxeODYwRE

Given the absence of any other CAF-approved Category 3 stadiums in Ghana, CAF has requested the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to select an alternative venue from among those approved by CAF outside Ghana for Matchday 3 and 4 of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 qualifiers.

The letter from CAF also recommended that the relevant authorities “conduct a comprehensive assessment of all major international stadiums in Ghana to ensure they comply with CAF technical standards.”

CAF has recommended that management of the Baba Yara Stadium hire specialised contractors immediately to carry out renovations necessary for the venue to meet CAF and FIFA regulations.

In a statement, CAF reiterated its willingness to assist Ghana, through the Ghana Football Association (GFA), in upgrading its stadiums to the required international standards.

To this end, CAF offered to provide an experienced international pitch consultant with expertise in major competitions like AFCON, to guide the improvements.

However, the GFA would be responsible for covering the costs of this support.

CAF also indicated that, after the renovation is completed, it would conduct an independent inspection at the GFA’s expense to determine if the stadium could once again host international matches.

With the suspension of Baba Yara Stadium’s approval, Ghana will need to secure alternative venues for upcoming international fixtures, including Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The GFA has pledged to collaborate with the government to resolve the stadium’s issues and restore its status as an international venue.

  • Travelers left stranded at Kenya’s major airport due to staff protest

Travelers left stranded at Kenya’s major airport due to staff protest

Hundreds of travelers were left stranded at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as airport staff staged a protest against the proposed lease of the airport to India’s Adani Group.

The industrial action, which involved workers deliberately slowing down operations, caused widespread flight delays and cancellations on Wednesday.

The aviation workers union opposed the 30-year lease, labeling the deal as unclear and warning it could lead to job cuts. The Kenyan government, however, defended the move, stating that the airport was overburdened and in need of private investment to upgrade its facilities.

Protesters gathered outside the airport, chanting slogans such as “Adani must go” and blowing plastic horns. Footage broadcast by Citizen TV also captured a police officer hitting a protester with a baton.

Wilma van Altena, a Dutch tourist who cut her vacation short to attend a funeral, was among the many passengers affected by the disruption.
“It’s been chaotic… there were hundreds of people outside the airport when we arrived, and we stood around and eventually made it inside,” she told the BBC.

“We have no information. There’s nothing on the boards, we’ve heard nothing from the airline. I need to get home, but I have no idea when that will happen.”

The Zimbabwe men’s football team was also stranded.
The squad had flown into Nairobi after an African Cup of Nations qualifier game in Uganda, but had been given no information about their onwards flight to Harare, an official who did not want to be named told the BBC.

The BBC’s Stewart Maclean, who is among those waiting to catch a flight, said that at around 05:45 BST (07:45 local time), the hundreds queueing outside the airport were calm, patient, but frustrated.

He said that cabin crew and pilots were among those waiting.
In a statement, the Kenya Airports Authority said: “As of 7:00 am, minimal operations had resumed.”

“In the meantime, we are engaging relevant parties to normalise operations. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.”

The Kenya Aviation Workers’ Union had earlier threatened an indefinite strike due to the government’s refusal to reveal details of the proposed lease agreement with the Adani Group. Both the Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission have also condemned the deal, stating that leasing such an important national asset to a private entity is unjustifiable.

These two organizations took legal action, filing a case in the High Court, which has since suspended the agreement to permit a judicial review. A final court ruling on the matter is still pending, with no specific date set for the decision.

Ghanaian students on govt scholarships in UK to be deported over unpaid fees

A group of Ghanaian students studying at the University of Birmingham, UK, are facing deportation after their student visas were revoked.

According to a statement from the UK Visas and Immigration, this visa cancellation is due to the students’ failure to pay their tuition fees.

The majority of these students are on the Government of Ghana Scholarship Scheme, but due to the government’s delay in sending the necessary funds, they have been unable to meet their financial obligations.

A letter from the UK Visa and Immigration Office sent to the affected students outlined their limited options: either leave the country voluntarily or face legal consequences, including possible detention and prosecution. The students now face the threat of deportation if no resolution is found soon.

“You still have permission until 09 November 2024, and the current conditions of your stay will continue to apply until then. Please ensure that you comply with these conditions.

You now have until 09 November 2024 to either leave the United Kingdom (UK) or make another application to stay here. You do not have a right of appeal or administrative review against the decision to cancel your permission.

“If you leave or are already outside the Common Travel Area (the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and the Republic of Ireland) before 9 November 2024, your permission will end immediately, and you will have to make a new application to re-enter the UK,” part of the letter stated.

543 attempts, 81 completed – Ghana Mental Health Authority concerned over rising suicide rate

Ghana is witnessing a worrying increase in suicide cases, with the Mental Health Authority (MHA) reporting a sharp spike in the number of attempts and deaths across the country.

In the first half of 2024, 543 suicide attempts were recorded, with 81 of these tragically resulting in death. These figures surpass the total for 2023, when there were 594 attempts and 48 completed suicides for the entire year.

The GMHA revealed these troubling statistics during the commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day, held annually on September 10.

The report emphasises a pressing need for immediate intervention.

The regions most affected by this growing crisis include Greater Accra, Eastern, and Central Regions, with Greater Accra reporting the highest number of deaths.

The Authority is especially alarmed by the rising rate of suicide among young people, particularly those aged 15-29. “Many of those affected by suicide worldwide are young, and this calls for urgent intervention,” the report stated.

To address the crisis, the GMHA is calling for nationwide education and awareness campaigns. It urges media outlets, health organisations, and communities to actively engage in suicide prevention efforts.

“It is crucial to start the conversation early to prevent the loss of our future generation to suicide,” the report noted, emphasising the need for open discussions in homes, schools, and public spaces to destigmatise suicidal behaviour.

Key preventive measures recommended by the GMHA include building interpersonal skills, restricting access to common methods of suicide, and ensuring timely intervention for individuals showing signs of suicidal behaviour.

“Despite suicide being one of the leading causes of death among young people, it can be prevented,” the report concluded.

With the surge in numbers, the GMHA’s call for action is clear – more needs to be done to curb this growing public health crisis.

Galamsey: Peasant Farmers Association raises alarm over potential food shortage

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has sounded an alarm about a looming food and nutrition crisis that could affect future generations if illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey,” continues unchecked.

In a statement released on Tuesday, September 10, the association called on the government to take decisive action, including enforcing a complete ban on illegal mining, in order to safeguard the environment, protect farmers’ livelihoods, and ensure food security.

PFAG reported that over 1.2 million hectares of farmland have been destroyed due to galamsey, with polluted water sources and damaged irrigation systems making sustainable farming increasingly difficult.

The illegal mining activities have also taken a toll on the cocoa industry and the production of other crops, as farmers struggle with limited access to clean water and fertile land.

The association warned that if immediate steps are not taken, the country could face a long-term food crisis, urging both the government and farmers to work together to eliminate illegal mining for the sake of the nation’s agricultural future.

Laryea Kingston now America’s RPS Academies coach

Former Ghana international, Laryea Kingston, has secured a new coaching role at RPS Academies in the United States, where he will focus on grooming young football talents.

Based in Saint Lucie, Florida, Kingston will collaborate with a team of coaches to mentor and develop rising stars in the multi-sport institution.

With a UEFA Licence B coaching certificate and vast experience from his playing and coaching career, Kingston is set to bring valuable insights to his new role.

Despite the disappointment of stepping down as head coach of the Black Starlets during the U-17 WAFU B Championship in Accra, Kingston shared his excitement about embracing this new opportunity in an interview with Graphic Sports.

“I had other coaching opportunities, but this option is very good for me,” he said.

Kingston explained how his new employers had been following his progress for some time before approaching him with the opportunity.

With his deep understanding of the Right to Dream model, Kingston feels confident in his ability to lead RPS Academies.

“I am very much at home working in an environment that combines education with sports performance, but with even bigger responsibilities this time,” he shared.

“We have a few US-based African players here, but we must widen our talent search. I want to give them a scout in Africa, like we had at Right to Dream, where players are scouted across the continent, especially in West Africa,” he said.

Kingston, who has been awarded a five-year deal, is expected to begin work on September 1.

He has previously worked with Right to Dream Academy and as a coach for the under-18 side of Danish club Nordsjaelland.

RPS Academies offers a broad range of sporting disciplines including football, tennis, golf, volleyball, and pickleball, while placing significant emphasis on academic development.

Ipswich legend Burley undergoing treatment for cancer

Ipswich Town icon and former Scotland boss, George Burley, is currently receiving treatment after being diagnosed with cancer, the Premier League club has confirmed.

The 68-year-old, who led the Scottish national team from early 2008 until late 2009, discovered his illness following a period of feeling unwell earlier this year.

Burley enjoyed a long playing career with Ipswich Town between 1973 and 1985, making 500 appearances for the club, and later returned as manager, guiding the team from 1994 to 2002.

“It has been a difficult time, but I am feeling much brighter now,” Burley said. “In fact, I am able to get to matches at Portman Road, and I am enjoying watching the team playing back in the Premier League.

“We are grateful to the club for the support they have shown me and my family, and I would ask that everyone be respectful of our privacy at this time.”

Burley, who played as a defender, also competed for the likes of Motherwell, Ayr United, and Falkirk.

As a manager, he coached clubs including Crystal Palace, Hearts and Southampton.

He was the last manager to guide Ipswich to Premier League promotion before current boss Kieran McKenna did so last season.

McKenna said: “This club has had some brilliant managers, and George is right up there as one of the very best.

“It has been a pleasure to get to know George since I arrived at Ipswich. He is a positive and optimistic character, and I know he will also take that attitude into the battle he now faces. We are all right behind him.”

Club chairman Mark Ashton added: “Our thoughts are with George, his wife Jill and their family.

“It’s always great to see him here in the directors’ box on a matchday, and we will do everything we can to support one of our all-time greats, uniquely as both player and manager.

  • Key Match Incidents panel declare Referee Kavanagh showing Rice a red card was right

Key Match Incidents panel declare Referee Kavanagh showing Rice a red card was right

The Key Match Incidents panel has upheld the decision to red-card Declan Rice in Arsenal’s recent 1-1 draw with Brighton, affirming referee Chris Kavanagh’s call.

The panel, responsible for evaluating significant refereeing decisions in the Premier League, concurred that Rice’s dismissal was warranted. In the 49th minute of the match, Rice, already on a yellow card, interfered with Joel Veltman’s free-kick attempt by pushing the ball away, leading to his expulsion.

It was the first red card of the England star’s career, with the panel agreeing his actions were “clear, deliberate and impactful” and a second yellow card was correct.

The panel, which unanimously backed the decision, wrote: “Rice knows what he’s doing – it’s a gentle touch, but once the referee sees it he has no choice.”

At the time of Declan Rice’s red card, Arsenal was leading 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kai Havertz. However, Brighton equalized with a goal from Joao Pedro, securing a draw at the Emirates Stadium.

The Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel, comprising three former players or coaches, a Premier League representative, and a member of the Professional Game Match Officials Board, reviewed the decisions.

The panel unanimously agreed that the VAR was correct in overturning Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal in Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United. The goal was initially allowed but later disallowed due to Mohamed Salah being offside in the buildup.

Out of the 23 decisions reviewed for match week three, the panel found only one on-field decision incorrect. They supported all but one decision, where they disagreed on whether Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes should have received a second yellow card during their 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Hughes, who was already on a yellow card, pulled back Cole Palmer just after halftime but was not cautioned by referee Jarred Gillett. The panel unanimously agreed with the initial booking but was split 3-2 on whether a second yellow should have been issued.

However, two of the panellists argued: “Palmer is the wrong side of Hughes and has options left and right; therefore, it is stopping a promising attack.”

  • Kevin De Bruyne fumes over team-mates’ display in Belgium-France clash

Kevin De Bruyne fumes over team-mates’ display in Belgium-France clash

Kevin De Bruyne voiced his frustration with his Belgium teammates following their disappointing Nations League loss to France, calling the performance “unacceptable.”

Despite a slow start, France found their rhythm and secured a 2-0 win over Belgium, courtesy of goals from Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele.

Throughout the match, the Belgian side looked disorganised, failing to link up effectively or pose a threat to France’s defence.

De Bruyne, clearly upset by the lack of cohesion and attacking spark, openly criticised his team’s efforts in the post-match interview.

Speaking to Belgian broadcaster VTM, the 33-year-old midfielder expressed his disappointment and said: “I can’t say here what went wrong. I already did that to the team at halftime.

I cannot repeat that in the media, but it has to be better in every way. If the standard we want to reach is the best, but we’re no longer good enough to get to that level, then you have to give everything. If you don’t even do that, it’s over.”

Belgium’s “Golden Generation,” once considered one of the most talented groups of players in world football, have struggled to build on the promise of their third-place showing at the 2018 World Cup, but that is not De Bruyne’s main gripe.

“I can accept that we’re not as good as in 2018,” the Manchester City star said. “I was the first to see that, but other things are unacceptable. I’m not going to say what.”

De Bruyne also criticised Belgium’s tactical setup, suggesting that the team’s style of play is hindering their ability to perform at their best.

“We are too many at the back. If you stay with six at the back, there is no connection,” he reasoned. “It is what it is. It is not about transition, but about people who do not perform their tasks.”

Following a frustrating conclusion to the international break, Kevin De Bruyne will be keen to bounce back as he prepares to join Manchester City for their Premier League clash against Brentford on Saturday.

  • Memphis Depay joins Brazilian club Corinthians

Memphis Depay joins Brazilian club Corinthians

Memphis Depay has officially joined Corinthians on a two-year deal after parting ways with Atlético Madrid as a free agent in July, according to an announcement made by the Brazilian club on Monday.

At 30 years old, Depay boasts an impressive record with the Dutch national team, having netted 46 goals in 98 appearances.

However, he was not included in the Netherlands squad for the ongoing Nations League fixtures.

Ronald Koeman’s team recently secured a 5-2 victory over Bosnia and are set to face Germany on Tuesday.

Despite his move to Brazil, Koeman has made it clear that Depay’s international prospects remain intact and his transfer will not affect future call-ups to the national team.

“I disapproved of Steven Bergwijn’s move to Saudi Arabia; with Memphis, it can be different,” Koeman told reporters on Monday.

“The level of the league in Brazil is different, so yes, he can still be part of the national team, but it depends on his fitness and if he reaches his level.”

Depay started his football journey at PSV Eindhoven and has since played for several prominent clubs, including Lyon, Barcelona, and Manchester United.

During his time at Atlético Madrid last season, he featured in 31 matches across all competitions and found the back of the net nine times.

Lionel Scaloni expects Lionel Messi to be back in action by October

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has said he is hopeful he will have Lionel Messi available for the World Cup qualifiers in October.

Messi, 37, has not played since sustaining a right ankle injury during the Copa América final against Colombia on July 14.
The Argentina captain recently returned to train with Inter Miami and could feature in Saturday’s MLS game against Philadelphia.

“We hope he starts to play,” Scaloni said of Messi. “When we give the next [squad] list [in October], we will be in contact with him as we do with everyone. Then we will see if he is available to return.”

Argentina strengthened their grip at the top of their qualifying group with a 3-0 win over Chile on Thursday without their all-time leading scorer, Messi.

The World Cup holders are four points clear of Uruguay ahead of Tuesday’s qualifier against Colombia in Barranquilla.

Scaloni is pleased with how the team is responding without Messi.

“It is difficult for a football team not to be dependent on Leo [Messi],” Scaloni said. “It happened in every team he was in, you have a unique footballer.

The good thing about this team is that we have an idea of the game beyond who is on the field, although the performers can change.

Without Leo, we try to do the same, but without that final touch that he has. All the players know what they have to do regardless of who is on the field.”

2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Game with Sudan will be difficult – Black Stars’ Otto Addo admits

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has acknowledged the tough task ahead as his team prepares to face Sudan in their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

During his post-match interview after Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Niger on Monday, September 9, 2024, Addo emphasised the importance of the next two qualifying matches.

He highlighted that victories in both games against Sudan are crucial for the Black Stars to keep their hopes alive for securing a spot in the next AFCON tournament in Morocco.

“It will be difficult again. I knew from the start, it’s just some little margins, little details that can decide.

This will be again, for us, a crucial match. We have to win; there is no way around it, and we have to win,” coach Otto Addo said.

The Black Stars head coach continued, “If we want to have the chance to play better after, we have to win. We are under pressure, this is for sure, and we have to do better.”

Following Monday’s draw against Niger, Ghana is now third on the Group F standings in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

StarTimes owes us about a million dollars – GFA over why broadcasting contract wasn’t renewed

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong disclosed that the association chose not to renew its broadcasting rights agreement with StarTimes due to an outstanding debt of nearly $1 million owed by the company.

The contract between the GFA and StarTimes concluded at the end of the previous football season without a renewal agreement.

The GFA has since granted the broadcasting rights to multiple free-to-air television stations.

In an interview with Kessben TV, Acheampong explained that the association had to source additional funds to compensate the clubs before the new season began.

“StarTimes owes Ghana Football Association close to 1 million dollars.

The GFA had to find money from different avenues to settle the clubs with the

‘StarTimes money that the clubs were supposed to receive.

This is the reason why we could not continue with StarTimes.”

The pictures shown on match day one have since been widely criticised for the poor broadcast.

GES alters Basic schools calendar, students to resume today September 10

Basic schools across the country are set to reopen tomorrow, September 10, 2024, marking the start of the 2024/2025 academic year.

This reopening will officially restore the school calendar for basic education to its original September start date, following a four-year disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A spokesperson for the Ghana Education Service (GES) told the Ghanaian Times that the return to the September academic calendar was aimed at normalising school operations and ensuring smooth transitions for both students and educators.

According to the 2024/2025 academic calendar released by the GES, kindergarten, primary, and junior high school (JHS) students will begin their first term tomorrow, which will last for 15 weeks.

The term will officially end on December 18, 2024, with schools vacating the following day, December 19, 2024.

The second term is scheduled to start on January 7, 2025, and conclude on April 16, 2025, followed by a vacation on April 17, 2025, after another 15 weeks of schooling.

The third and final term of the academic year will commence on May 6, 2025, and will run for 12 weeks, ending on July 24, 2025, bringing the academic year to a close.

The academic calendar was previously adjusted from 2021 to 2022, with the school year rescheduled from January to December due to the nationwide school closures that began in March 2020 as part of efforts to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service wishes to inform you that the reopening date for basic schools (kindergarten, primary, and junior high schools) across the country for the first term of the 2023/2024 academic year is October 3, 2023,” a memo signed and issued by the Deputy Director-General of the GES in charge of Quality and Access, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh,” said.

  • Free SHS: If you can afford private schools, send your wards there – Akufo-Addo to Ghanaians

Free SHS: If you can afford private schools, send your wards there – Akufo-Addo to Ghanaians

President Nana Akufo-Addo has addressed the recent calls for the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy to be made more selective, suggesting that wealthier families should send their children to private institutions if they can afford to do so.

This statement comes in response to growing concerns about the financial pressure the FSHS initiative places on Ghana’s budget.

The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Acheampong Boafo, had earlier proposed that the government should revise the policy, allowing affluent families to pay school fees.

This, he argued, would free up resources to better support students from less privileged backgrounds.

Speaking at the 2024/2025 Annual General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo defended the universal approach to public education, asserting that state-funded schools should remain accessible to all, especially to those who might otherwise be unable to afford secondary schooling.

“People who can afford to pay fees for the education of their wards should send them to fee-paying private schools.

Public schools that are funded by the taxpayer should be free to all who will otherwise be unable to pay for their education.

“That is why the number of pupils who have access to secondary education has doubled since the introduction of the free senior high school policy.”

“Over 5.7 million people have benefitted from the policy since its inception.

The following impact of this dramatic development will be felt in due course and will far outweigh the small number of privileged parents who can afford to pay for the education of their wards,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

Don’t turn yourselves into EC by declaring elections results – Akufo-Addo to political parties

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has issued a warning to political parties against announcing election results before the Electoral Commission (EC) during the December 7 elections.

Addressing attendees at the 2024/2025 Annual General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association, held at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, the President underscored that only the EC has the official authority to declare election results.

He emphasised that adhering to this protocol is essential for ensuring peace and stability throughout the electoral process and beyond.

“Political parties must refrain from declaring election results before the Electoral Commission does so, as this can lead to confusion, misinformation, and even potential conflicts.

“The EC’s role as an impartial and independent body ensures that its results reflect the will of the people, free from partisan influence.

“This assignment of responsibility is essential to maintain public trust in the electoral system and to prevent any undermining of democracy through the spread of unverified or false election outcomes.”

  • “I’m not going to change course” – France’s Deschamps after loss to Italy

“I’m not going to change course” – France’s Deschamps after loss to Italy

France’s head coach Didier Deschamps affirmed on Sunday that he would continue with his planned squad rotations ahead of Monday’s Nations League match against Belgium in Lyon.

Despite a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Italy in Paris last Friday, Deschamps maintained that this loss would not affect his strategy to implement multiple lineup changes.

He emphasised that the pre-arranged adjustments would go ahead as scheduled, indicating his confidence in the approach.

“The six Nations League matches must be used to introduce new players and distribute playing time,” he told the pre-match press conference.

“If we had a different schedule and were playing World Cup qualifiers, I would not have chosen this course, that’s for sure. But I chose it because I believe that we have to go through it. I’m not going to change course.”

Following their first two Nations League matches, France will face Israel and Belgium next month before wrapping up their Group A2 campaign with fixtures against Israel and Italy in November.

Speaking after the Italy loss, where France took an early lead within 20 seconds but ultimately lost 3-1, Deschamps stated that he is seeking a strong response from his team.

He emphasised the importance of rebounding from the defeat as they move forward in the competition

“I can’t be satisfied with the match against Italy, nor can the players. Tomorrow is another game, another context, a different team with the same obligation,” he added.

“The course I have taken is to give as much playing time to as many players as possible. Whatever the playing time, there is always pressure, you have to perform as well as possible.”

Belgium, meanwhile, are still hurting after their Euro 2024 exit at the hands of France, with manager Dominic Tedesco feeling they showed them too much respect in their round-of-16 loss this summer in Düsseldorf, Germany.

“At the European Championship, it was a close one against France. We could have won too,” Tedesco said at a press conference on Sunday. “France were a bit better; they deserved to win, but we also had our chances.

It would be a lie if I said that match is forgotten; it still hurts. I often think about the European Championship, but you also must look ahead.”

Belgium began their campaign with a 3-1 win over Israel behind closed doors on Friday in Debrecen, Hungary, where they had switched the match for security reasons.

Rodrygo expresses disappointment over Ballon d’Or snub

Rodrygo expressed his frustration about being left off the men’s Ballon d’Or shortlist, despite his key contributions to Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League triumphs last season.

Several of his teammates, including Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Toni Kroos, Antonio Rüdiger, Dani Carvajal, and new signing Kylian Mbappé, were named on the prestigious 30-man list, but Rodrygo was notably absent.

“I was upset; I think I deserved it,” Rodrygo told ESPN in an exclusive interview on Sunday. “I don’t want to belittle the players who are there, but I think I had a place in the 30. It was a surprise.

But there’s not much I can do; I’m not the one who decides these things.”

The Ballon d’Or winner is set to be revealed during a ceremony in Paris on October 28. Last season, Rodrygo netted 10 goals in 34 LaLiga appearances and added five goals in the Champions League for Real Madrid.

Despite competition from the arrival of Kylian Mbappé, Rodrygo has remained in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting lineup as part of a three-man attack.

Recently, Rodrygo took to social media, sharing photos of himself holding trophies with Madrid, accompanied by a laughing emoji. He later admitted the post was meant to poke fun at his omission from the Ballon d’Or shortlist.

“I made a somewhat mocking post,” Rodrygo said. “Now there’s not much to say. Everyone knows my indignation. Everyone [has supported me], both in the national team and at Real Madrid. People sent messages.”

Rodrygo admitted that his versatility has inhibited his progress, especially with Brazil, who play Paraguay in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

The forward scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over Ecuador this weekend.

“Often, I’m just filling spaces,” Rodrygo said. “Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as No. 9? Rodrygo. That’s it. It may get in my way a little, but I’m a team player.”

Rodrygo was asked about Madrid and Brazil teenager Endrick, who has been given the ironic nickname “Bobby” by teammates after citing England legend Bobby Charlton as one of his idols.

“Now he has become Bobby!” Rodrygo told ESPN. “He is no longer Endrick. He’s become Bobby, that’s it. There’s nothing to be done, if he gets angry, it’s worse!”

Marc Bernal signs new deal with Barca amid ACL injury – Sources

Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal has secured a contract extension with the club, despite being sidelined for the season due to an ACL tear.

The 17-year-old will sign a deal that runs until 2026, with the option to extend for another three years when he turns 18.

This new contract includes a significant pay raise and an increase in his release clause, which had been set at €20 million.

The club moved quickly to protect Bernal from interest by other teams, especially after losing striker Marc Guiu to Chelsea earlier in the year.

Bernal had been a key player in Barcelona’s opening three matches before suffering the ACL injury in a victory over Rayo Vallecano. He is set to undergo surgery this week.

Despite his injury, Barcelona is showing their commitment to him, speeding up contract negotiations during this challenging period.

joined the club’s academy in 2014, Bernal rose through the ranks alongside teammates Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí, making his first-team debut against Valencia in August.
