Sports ministry gives account of how renovation funds were used after Ablakwa embezzlement claims

Ministry of Youth and Sports has dismissed allegations made by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, regarding the misuse of funds allocated for stadium renovations.

In a recent statement, the ministry urged the public to disregard such claims, reiterating that the funds had been properly used for the intended projects, including the rehabilitation of key sports facilities like the Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Stadium.

The ministry emphasised its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in all renovation efforts.

“The Accra Sports Stadium has undergone three (3) phases of renovation works. Phase (I) contract was awarded in January 2018 at the contract sum of GH¢10,521,760.11 to Messrs Coupbay Construction Limited.

The renovation contract for Accra Sports Stadium was awarded in October 2018 at the contract sum of GH¢18,647,139.41 to Messrs Coupbay Construction Limited.

“Baba Yara Sports Stadium has undergone two (2) phases of renovation since the last major renovation in 2007.

Phase (I) of renovation work on Baba Yara Stadium was awarded in April 2020 at the contract sum of GH¢21,122,068.44 to Messrs Javkier Limited,” portions of the statement read.

It was further disclosed that “The Essipong Stadium was constructed in 2007 for the 2008 AFCON Tournament. However, similar to the Accra and Baba Yara Stadia, there has been no renovation work done since 2007.

The seaside climate also caused the metal works of the stadium to rust. Phase (I) renovation work was awarded on contract in April 2020 to Messrs CI Limited at the contract sum of GH¢17,969,447.10.”

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has urged the public to dismiss allegations made by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, regarding the misappropriation of funds designated for stadium renovations.

The ministry emphasised that the funds have been properly allocated and used for projects, including key renovations at the Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Stadium.

They assured that all financial resources were directed towards upgrading sports infrastructure, as outlined in previous reports.

IES calls for reconsideration of ECG-PDS deal

Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, suggests revisiting the old agreement between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Power Distribution Services (PDS) following the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) concerns about ECG’s financial instability.

The previous concession deal between ECG and PDS was terminated after a forensic audit revealed issues with the Payment Security for the transaction.

Nana Amoasi advocates for reviewing the agreement with modifications to minimise risks and find a sustainable solution to ECG’s current challenges.

“All possible forms of private sector participation can be considered but we must revisit the situation again because things have worsened since we introduced the PDS-ECG arrangements.

So we should re-access and make sure that we take the right risk assessments and get a fair solution to that,” he said during an interview on Ghana Tonight.

Nana Amoasi VII believes that revisiting the concession between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Power Distribution Services (PDS) could address ECG’s current financial challenges.

He stresses that private sector involvement is crucial for securing necessary funding. Although the initial PDS arrangement introduced billing and management expectations, it was dissolved due to questionable dealings.

His comments come after a Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) report highlighted ECG’s severe financial crisis, with revenue plunging below 42% of required funds, raising concerns about bankruptcy across the energy sector.

My disqualification has left my uncle in coma – Bernard Mornah

Flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, disclosed that his disqualification from the 2024 elections has had a severe emotional impact on his family.

He shared during an interview with Peace FM that his uncle, upon hearing the news on September 20, 2024, fell into a coma.

Mornah mentioned that, as of that afternoon, he was unsure if his uncle had regained consciousness.

“As we speak, my uncle in the village is in a coma because of the news that I have been disqualified.

I do not know as of now if he has recovered, but that is the situation with people who are very hopeful of my presidency,” he disclosed.

He faulted the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Jean Mensa, for deliberately disqualifying him without considering the corrections they made in their nomination forms.

“Other candidates were called to come and make some corrections on their nomination forms, and I was also called. We rectified those errors and sent the forms back to the EC, but I am shocked Jean Mensa, whom I have worked with since 2003, could do this to me.

You realised that when she was giving reasons for the disqualification of others, when it got to my turn, she appeared to be fumbling and could not even mention my name.

Someone I have worked with for that long no longer knows my name?” he wondered.

Mr. Mornah hinted that the matter has been referred to his lawyers and is optimistic he will be on the ballot for the 2024 polls despite machinations to remove him.

Video: See how Dr Bawumia and his campaign team celebrated his position on the ballot

A video that surfaced online captures the joyful reaction from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team upon learning that the New Patriotic Party candidate had secured the number one spot on the 2024 election ballot.

In the clip, Bawumia, surrounded by key party members on his campaign bus, is seen smiling and enthusiastically singing along to Kwabena Kwabena’s song “Number One.”

The highlife track was originally composed for Nana Akufo-Addo’s 2016 presidential campaign.

On Friday, September 20, 2024, the Electoral Commission conducted a ballot draw for the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured the top spot on the ballot, while his key rival, former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC, landed the eighth position.

This ballot positioning has led to varied interpretations from supporters of both major parties and other contenders, with speculations on how it may influence voter perceptions and the outcome of the elections.

La Liga president reprimanded after Real Madrid’s appeal in the CVC case

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has received an official reprimand from Spain’s Administrative Sports Court (TAD) following a complaint filed by Real Madrid.

The TAD initiated proceedings in July after Madrid accused Tebas of overstepping his authority and lacking transparency during the August 2021 assembly, where LaLiga clubs discussed the controversial CVC investment deal concerning TV rights.

Though Tebas escaped suspension, LaLiga expressed strong disagreement with the court’s decision and announced plans to challenge the ruling through an appeal, according to a statement released on Friday.

The statement said: “TAD has ruled on a complaint from Real Madrid CF for having called the General Assembly of 12/08/2021 with eight days’ notice, instead of the required 10 days, using the urgent procedure, without expressly indicating the reasons for the urgency in the call.

“From LALIGA’s point of view, there is no violation in the conduct of President Javier Tebas Medrano.

Furthermore, the convening of the General Assembly complied with all statutory requirements.”

LaLiga clubs voted in December 2021 in favour of a €2 billion ($2.2 billion) investment deal with private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, despite the opposition from Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Club.

Occupy Julorbi House Demo: Police-organisers meeting on venue ends in a stalemate

Ghana Police Service and Democracy Hub, the organisers of the ‘Occupy Julorbi House Demo’, were unable to come to a consensus on the venue for the upcoming protest.

In a statement released on Friday, September 20, 2024, the police indicated that during a meeting earlier that day, they had requested Democracy Hub to suggest different locations for the demonstration.

However, the organisers declined the alternative venues proposed to them.

“Police, therefore requested them to propose alternative locations for the demonstration, and the organisers proposed the following:37 roundabout, Airport roundabout, Opeibea intersection, Stanbic Heights, Christ the King and the Arko Adjei interchange.

“In the assessment of the Police, holding the demonstration in any of these locations may endanger public defence, public order, public safety, public health and the running of essential services,” it noted.

“Police, therefore, suggested the following seven locations to them for consideration; the Cantonments Post Office DVLA stretch, the VAG Association junction, MTN Head Office on the Liberation Road, El-wak Side park, Obra spot, Kawukudi Park, Efua Sutherland Park, the frontage of the Trade Fair,” it stated.

It further disclosed that it had gathered intelligence that some protestors are planning to jeopardise the peace, security, and law and order in the country.

“We would like to call on the organisers of the protest to caution their members against these unlawful acts, desist from any attempts to disturb the peace and abide by the Public Order Act 1994, (Act 491) and all other laws in the country since they will be held responsible for any breaches of the law,” it stated.

On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, tensions rose between the police and Democracy Hub after the police obtained an injunction from the Accra High Court to stop the group from staging their protest at Revolution Square, situated in front of the Jubilee House.

The demonstration was originally planned for September 21 to September 23, 2024.

You break into my house and you know you are getting shot – US Kamala Harris

US Vice-President Kamala Harris has spoken of her willingness to use her gun if an intruder entered her home.

“If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” she said in a jokey exchange during a livestreamed event in Michigan with host Oprah Winfrey on Thursday.

After a laugh, the Democratic presidential nominee continued: “I probably shouldn’t have said that, but my staff will deal with that later.”

Harris, who highlighted during the recent presidential debate that she was a gun-owner, went on to reiterate that she supported a ban on assault weapons.

A firearm of that type was “literally designed to be a tool of war,” she told Winfrey. “It has no place on the streets of a civil society.”

When questioned by Oprah Winfrey about whether she had been a gun owner “for a while,” Kamala Harris confirmed that she had.

Harris emphasized her support for the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms in the U.S. However, she also outlined her stance on banning assault weapons, pointing to the country’s ongoing issue with school shootings as a critical reason for the need for such restrictions.

It was “bone-chilling” for a child to have to go through a drill for such an incident, Harris said. “It doesn’t have to be this way,” she added.

After one of the most recent US mass shootings, a 14-year-old boy has been charged with murdering four people at a high school in Georgia.

During Thursday’s event with Winfrey – who also spoke at last month’s Democratic National Convention – Harris was also questioned on topics including immigration and the economy.

Celebrities including Jennifer Lopez featured in the session, which was watched by about 300,000 people.

Harris’s gun ownership has been a matter of public record since 2019, when she said: “I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do – for personal safety. I was a career prosecutor.”

Kamala Harris’s ownership of firearms gained widespread attention in the U.S. following her recent presidential debate with Republican contender Donald Trump.

The 2024 showdown marked the first time the subject surfaced during the campaign.

During the debate, Harris refuted Trump’s allegation that she intended to seize guns from all citizens if she were to become president.

She clarified that both she and her vice-presidential candidate, Tim Walz—an avid hunter—were gun owners themselves.

  • 2024 polls: Bawumia number 1 on the ballot, Mahama at the 8th position

2024 polls: Bawumia number 1 on the ballot, Mahama at the 8th position

New Patriotic Party (NPP) has secured a favourable position in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) balloting for the upcoming December 7, presidential elections.

Evans Nimako, the NPP’s Director of Elections, picked the party’s number during the EC’s balloting event held in Accra on Friday. The NPP will be featured in a prominent position on the ballot paper.

The main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), drew the 8th position, while the All People’s Congress (APC) candidate, Hassan Abdulai Ayariga, secured the 9th spot.

Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) picked number 5, and Nana Akosua Frimpomaa of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) drew the 7th position.

Following the Electoral Commission’s (EC) balloting process on September 20, 2024, independent candidates were also assigned their positions on the ballot paper for the upcoming December 7, 2024, presidential election.

Independent candidate Kofi Koranteng has secured the 10th spot on the ballot for the December 7, 2024, presidential election, while George Twum Barima will take the 11th position.

The New Force Movement, led by Nana Kwame Bediako (Cheddar), claimed the 12th spot, and the Movement for Change will appear last at number 13.

These independent contenders will compete against nine established political parties in what promises to be a competitive election as they all vie for the presidency.

Earlier, Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa revealed that several presidential hopefuls were disqualified from the race due to their failure to rectify errors in their nomination documents. Despite being given sufficient time, these aspirants could not meet the required standards.

Among the disqualified candidates are Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Janet Nabla of the People’s National Party (PNP).

8th on the ballot is an end to NPP’s dark years of governance – NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed contentment with securing the 8th position on the ballot for the 2024 presidential elections.

The party views the number as a turning point, representing the end of what they call eight years of mismanagement and corruption by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking to the media on Friday, September 20, after the ballot draw, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey remarked that the position symbolises a critical moment for the NDC to step in and resolve the economic and governance challenges created during the NPP’s time in office.

“We came here asking for God’s perfect will to be done, and we accept the number eight.

After eight critical years of decay, after eight years of total lack of order, corruption, and darkness that have engulfed this country, I think the eight is quite significant to tell the country that this is the moment to stop the decay after the eight years,” he said.

The NDC General Secretary also expressed satisfaction that the public witnessed the NPP’s disregard for the initial balloting agreement and did what they liked.

“The country clearly will not allow those who are doing everything possible to do what is wrong and those who are doing what is right for the sake of Ghana,” Mr Kwetey said.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has secured the top spot on the ballot paper, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will hold the 8th position.

This arrangement was determined during the balloting process at the Electoral Commission’s office in Accra.

Pep insists De Bruyne could feature in Man City-Arenal clash despite injury

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has not ruled out Kevin De Bruyne’s participation in the upcoming match against Arsenal, despite the midfielder suffering an injury during Wednesday’s game.

Guardiola hinted that there is still a possibility the Belgian star could be available for Sunday’s important clash.

“He feels a little better today… Tomorrow we train and we will see. He could be [involved],” Guardiola told a news conference on Friday.

Kevin De Bruyne was taken off at halftime during Manchester City’s 0-0 draw with Inter Milan after sustaining an injury while attempting to latch onto a Jack Grealish through ball.

City now turn their attention to a crucial Premier League encounter against Arsenal, which could shape the title race. Pep Guardiola’s side remains unbeaten with four consecutive wins, sitting comfortably at the top of the table.

Addressing media concerns about the congested football schedule, Guardiola commented on Rodri’s suggestion that a player strike could be on the horizon, emphasising the growing challenges players face.

“I agree with you, maybe for the first time, that many voices are talking about the players,” Guardiola said. “I’m pretty sure that if something is going to change, it must come from the players. They are the only ones who can change something.

“The business can be without managers, sporting directors, media, and owners, but without players you cannot play. The only ones to have the power to do it is them.

“And also, I’m pretty busy; they’ve done it to adjust the game, to make it more attractive. That’s the reason why many players around the world, not just Rodders [Rodri], are starting to talk. We’ll see.”

Haaland must prove himself in big matches – Mikel Obi

Former Nigerian football icon Mikel Obi has called on Manchester City’s star forward, Erling Haaland, to step up and prove his abilities during pivotal games for the club.

Obi acknowledged Haaland’s impressive goal-scoring feats in European football but noted that the Norwegian striker has yet to consistently shine in crucial matches, especially in the Champions League.

The ex-Chelsea star highlighted that Haaland’s performances in major encounters have not been as dominant as expected, suggesting that he could follow the example of Lionel Messi, who made a lasting impact in key moments throughout his career, solidifying his status as one of the game’s greatest players.

“Right now, he hasn’t [shown up in big games]. We can agree on that.

I want to see him, on Sunday, show up in the big games, which is what Messi did,” he said, as shared by Vince on X.

The retired Nigerian footballer made his remarks after Manchester City’s goalless draw against Inter Milan in their 2024/2025 UEFA Champions League opener.

Despite an explosive start to the Premier League with nine goals in four matches, Haaland couldn’t find the net in the Champions League game.

Premier League pundits have often criticized Haaland for lacking versatility, claiming he’s primarily a finisher. However, the Norwegian striker has brushed off the criticism, stating that such comments don’t affect him.

  • A change in packed game schedule should come for the players

A change in packed game schedule should come for the players

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola emphasised on Friday that the initiative for a more balanced match schedule should be led by the players themselves.

This statement comes just days after his midfielder, Rodri, hinted that players might consider striking due to the strain of their packed game schedule.

Guardiola made these remarks ahead of his team’s upcoming match against Arsenal on Sunday, which falls in the middle of a demanding period of seven games over three weeks for the defending Premier League champions.

“Many, many voices are talking about it,” Guardiola told reporters.

“If something is going to change, it must come from the players.

The business can be without managers, without sporting directors, without media, without owners, but without the players, it cannot be played.

“It is not just Rodri (speaking out); it is many, many players, and not just in this country, but around the world people are starting to talk, so we will see.”

Guardiola was non-committal about whether Kevin de Bruyne will play on Sunday after his captain limped off at halftime of their 0-0 draw with Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday and did not play the second half.

“He feels a bit better today. Tomorrow we’re training and we’ll see. He could be involved,” the manager said.

  • We don’t protect players – Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca on fixtures

We don’t protect players – Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca on fixtures

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has voiced concerns about the intense football schedule, stating that players lack adequate protection from the heavy match load.

He acknowledged that players speaking out about the overwhelming number of games is “an important first step.”

The debate over player burnout has intensified recently, with Manchester City’s Rodri suggesting players are prepared to strike if no changes are made.

His remarks have been backed by Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Barcelona’s Jules Koundé, while Carlo Ancelotti hinted that players might even accept reduced wages if it meant fewer games.

Maresca is the latest to address the issue publicly.

“Yes, no doubt,” he said at a news conference on Friday when asked if there were too many games on the football calendar.

“In terms of games, it’s too much. We do not protect players. The only ones that can do something is the players. We can help them. I think in the last two weeks some of the players have explained what they think, and I think it’s a good starting point.”

Chelsea have opted to exclude Cole Palmer, Wesley Fofana, and Romeo Lavia from their UEFA Conference League squad, prioritising careful management of their game time over the course of the long season.

Currently sitting in eighth place in the Premier League after four matches, Chelsea are preparing for a London derby against West Ham on Saturday.

Manager Enzo Maresca confirmed that Enzo Fernández and new signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who were absent from last week’s victory over Bournemouth due to illness, will be fit for selection.

However, the Blues will still be without captain Reece James and Malo Gusto, who are sidelined with ongoing fitness issues.

  • Players wouldn’t have a problem cutting pay for flexible fixtures – Ancelotti

Players wouldn’t have a problem cutting pay for flexible fixtures – Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said he believes players would be willing to take a pay cut if it meant playing fewer games during the season.

Top internationals competing in the expanded Champions League and the revamped Club World Cup could end up playing as many as 85 games this season, which has led some players to complain about the new schedule overload.

“Football needs to reflect because the aim is to try to play less games to have less injuries,” Ancelotti said in Friday’s news conference.

“If that leads to lowering salaries, the aim is for players to play less games, so I don’t think the players will have any problem to lower their wages if they play less.”

Manchester City midfielder Rodri recently cautioned that players are nearing the point of strike action due to growing concerns about their heavy match schedules.

His sentiments were echoed by several others, including Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Dani Carvajal, who have voiced similar frustrations.

However, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti noted that any strike threats from the players would not alter the current season’s fixture calendar.

“The complaints of coaches and players is not going to change this season’s calendar,” Ancelotti said.

“It’s important to reflect on this and the players more so because they are getting tired. We have to analyse this. The players are thinking about changes in the future.”

Ancelotti also spoke about his team’s form ahead of their game against Espanyol.

Los Blancos go into Saturday’s LaLiga game on the back of a hard-fought 3-1 home win over Stuttgart in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.

“Against Stuttgart we showed some great plays,” Ancelotti said. “I think we play beautiful football. I see that our fans are loving how we are playing.

“Can we play better? Yes, sometimes. With our players, with our characteristics, we have to win and play well.

“We have to think about winning and hope not to have injuries. I hope to see the team improving, keep getting that good dynamic back.”

Real Madrid currently sit third in La Liga, trailing leaders Barcelona by four points after five matches.

While the team has areas to work on, manager Carlo Ancelotti understands that progress will require patience.

  • The focus is to win and not necessarily play well – Real Madrid’s Ancelotti

The focus is to win and not necessarily play well – Real Madrid’s Ancelotti

On Friday, Real Madrid’s manager Carlo Ancelotti, 65, dismissed concerns about the team’s less appealing playing style, asserting that securing victories takes precedence over aesthetics.

With an unbeaten record of five wins in seven matches this season, Ancelotti remains focused on strategies for success, even as he navigates injuries to key players and others who are still working to regain their best form.

“Real Madrid fans prefer winning over playing well,” he said ahead of Sunday’s LaLiga clash at home to mid-table Espanyol.

“Ideally you want both, winning while playing an attractive style of football, but our main objective is pleasing our fans, who are very demanding, so we will keep our focus on winning as we know that our squad is still far away from ideal form.

“We are not at our best, and that is normal in the beginning of a demanding calendar. We will improve as the season starts to get into the important things to play for. For the moment we are in, we are doing well.”

Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni returned from injury in Real Madrid’s tough 3-1 win over Stuttgart, kicking off their defence of the Champions League title on Tuesday.

Despite this positive development, manager Carlo Ancelotti indicated that David Alaba, Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos, and Brahim Diaz will need several more weeks to fully recover.

Ancelotti remains optimistic about forwards Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe, pointing out that while they are still in the process of developing, both players have been making steady progress and are ready to inject the team with the energy needed for a more dynamic attacking approach.

“The criticism doesn’t bother me because I see that the fans are delighted,” Ancelotti said.

“You can play better, but the fans are used to our ‘rock and roll’ football. Not a lot of touches. We try to make the Madrid fans happy. And our game is about intensity, pace… Without wasting too much time in reaching the opponent’s goal.

“These are our characteristics. We have players with a lot of strength and speed, especially on the ball, and we have to take advantage of that.

“For me, I believe that beautiful football depends on the characteristics of the players I have: attacking well, defending well… playing well on the counter. There are many facets and everyone has their own opinion.”

Barcelona top the LaLiga standings with 15 points, four ahead of Atletico Madrid, Real and Villarreal.

Man Utd hire architects to present Old Trafford recommendations by year’s end

Manchester United has engaged the internationally acclaimed architectural firm Foster + Partners to create a comprehensive masterplan for the area surrounding Old Trafford as part of an ambitious redevelopment initiative.

The Premier League club is exploring two potential paths: either refurbishing the existing stadium, which is the largest club venue in the UK, or constructing a new stadium on adjacent land owned by the club.

Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of United, leans towards the idea of building a new facility, and discussions within the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force have reportedly focused on the concept of a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 rather than renovating the current one.

Foster + Partners, based in London, has also been entrusted with overseeing a £50 million upgrade of United’s Carrington Training Complex.

Norman Foster, a prominent figure in architecture, is known for designing some of the world’s most recognisable structures, such as the HSBC Building in Hong Kong, London’s “Gherkin,” and the revamped Reichstag in Berlin.

Foster, founder and executive chairman of Foster + Partners, said: “As a proud Mancunian, I am passionate about the chance to rebuild on Manchester’s great industrial heritage, creating a vibrant new mixed-use community, served by highly sustainable and improved transport links, providing homes and jobs for the local community, all catalysed by a world-class stadium for the world’s most famous football team – Manchester United.”

United’s chief operating officer, Collette Roche, said: “Lord Foster has unrivalled experience in delivering projects of this scale and ambition.”

The anticipated cost for a new stadium is estimated to be around £2 billion, and the task force is set to provide its final recommendations by the year’s end.

Supporters are being encouraged to share their opinions on the redevelopment plans.

Gary Neville, the former United captain who is a member of the task force, has called on fans to actively participate in the consultation process.

Essien names stint with Black Stars as time he suffered most of his bad injuries

Iconic former midfielder for the Black Stars, Michael Essien has opened up about the injury challenges he faced throughout his football career and how they influenced his journey.

He revealed that most of his serious injuries happened while playing for Ghana’s national team, which had a significant effect on his career path.

Despite these setbacks, the ex-Chelsea star expressed no regrets about his time representing the national side.

In a recent interview with Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo from JoyNews, Essien acknowledged that injuries were a tough aspect of his career, but he remains untroubled by them.

“Most of my bad injuries happened when I was playing for the Black Stars, but I don’t hold any grudges. I was just unlucky,” he said, as reported by JoySports on X.

Essien earned his UEFA Licence A in 2023 and is now an assistant manager at Nordsjaelland FC in Denmark.

At 42, he has been with Nordsjaelland since 2020, where he has been gaining valuable experience while completing his coaching qualifications.

In March 2024, he was a candidate for the head coach position of the Black Stars, but the Ghana Football Association ultimately opted for Otto Addo instead.

Essien retired from professional football in 2020, two years after stepping back from international play.

He had an illustrious career with renowned European clubs including Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.

His time at Chelsea was particularly notable, as he became a club legend during his nine-year stay.

  • Arteta says Arsenal have been preparing for the Manchester City game since pre-season

Arteta says Arsenal have been preparing for the Manchester City game since pre-season

Arsenal concludes a demanding week of away matches with a challenging encounter against defending champions Manchester City in the Premier League this Sunday.

Manager Mikel Arteta, 42, revealed that his team has been preparing for this pivotal clash since the pre-season.

Following their victory over Tottenham Hotspur in a north London derby last weekend, Arsenal traveled to Bergamo, where they secured a goalless draw against Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday.

However, there’s little time for recovery, as they now face City on the weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s squad has narrowly defeated Arsenal for the title in the past two seasons, and once again, both teams find themselves at the top of the league standings after four matches, with City holding a two-point advantage.

“We’ve been preparing for this since pre-season. Obviously, we knew the schedule and we know that it’s extremely rare to play in these conditions with three massive away games in six days,” Arteta said.

“But it was what it was so we have prepared for that, both physically, mentally, and tactically.

“We’re making sure that everyone is ready for it because we’re going to need them, especially with the injuries that we had from the international break.”

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard remains sidelined with an ankle injury sustained on duty with Norway and Arteta is unsure of the midfielder’s return date.

“We need to see the development in the next week or so, how the ankle reacts first of all and then the staff will give me an update on the time frame and how long he’ll be out for,” the Spaniard said.

Arteta added that there were no fresh injuries after the draw at Atalanta but had hoped for an extra day of rest after City drew at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

“We wanted the same as them, we’re not getting it, so we have to adapt and make the most of the time that we have today and tomorrow and on the morning of the match to prepare in the best way to go there and win the game,” he said.

Although City have had Arsenal’s number in the past, they have not beaten Arteta’s side in their last three meetings in all competitions, with their last win coming in April 2023.

Arsenal also boast a stellar away record in 2024, dropping points in just the 0-0 draw at City last season, and Arteta said he expected a competitive atmosphere at The Etihad Stadium.

“We go to the home of the champions, the team that I think in Premier League history has been the most consistent ever, not only in terms of results but in terms of dominance and consistent top performances,” he said.

“This is the challenge. We have to go there and prove that again we’ve made another step and we can compete.”

Sir Alex Ferguson says he misses his Man Utd job sometimes

Former manager of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, has revealed that he occasionally misses his managerial role, even 11 years after retiring from his illustrious career.

At 82, Ferguson stepped down from United following the 2012-13 season, having successfully led the team to reclaim the Premier League title from Manchester City.

In a recent interview with the BBC, which was broadcast on Friday, he shared that there are moments when he reflects on his time in charge.

“Yeah, I miss it sometimes,” he said. “I think the first year after retirement, I went to the European final and I said to [his late wife] Cathy: ‘This is what I miss—big games, the European games.’

“So then I went to most of the European finals because I find something I can relate to, something I would liked to have done every day. Because these are the big events that United should always be involved in.”

Sir Alex Ferguson is recognised as the most successful manager in English football, having secured 13 league titles, two Champions League trophies, five FA Cups, and four League Cups during his tenure at Manchester United.

Since his exit in 2013, the club has faced challenges in achieving both trophies and stability, with David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and currently Erik ten Hag all having taken the managerial reins at Old Trafford.

This Saturday, United will head to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.

Check out Cristiano Ronaldo’s opinion on Barca’s Lamine Yamal and Jude Bellingham

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his belief that Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal will emerge as “the best player of this new generation.” The five-time Ballon d’Or recipient noted that he has been highly impressed with the 17-year-old’s performances to date.

“He’s got a huge potential,” Ronaldo told Rio Ferdinand in his Youtube channel. “I see a lot of talent. But let’s see during his journey what’s going to happen.

“But I think he’ll make it. He will be the best player of this new generation.”

Yamal, who scored Barcelona’s lone goal in their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Monaco on Thursday, has broken numerous records since making his debut.

At just 16, he became the youngest goal scorer in La Liga history and the youngest player to appear in a European Championship.

His standout performances helped Spain secure the 2024 Euros title, earning him the Young Player of the Tournament award.

Girona manager Míchel Sánchez, after watching Yamal’s performance in the Catalan derby on Sunday, remarked that he believes the young star has the potential to reach the level of Lionel Messi.

However, Yamal insists he wants to be his own player even though he is honoured to be compared to Barca legend Messi, “the greatest player in the history of football.”

Ronaldo said he believes Yamal is in the right place to do great things.

“He needs luck because he is very young,” Ronaldo said. “I hope he doesn’t have any problems [injuries]. He is in a context that helps him a lot. Spain’s national team is really good.”

Al Nassr forward praised Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham for his impressive performances.

Since joining the Spanish giants in the summer of 2023, the England international has made a significant impact, netting 23 goals and providing 13 assists, playing a key role in helping Los Blancos secure both La Liga and the Champions League titles.

Bellingham’s exceptional debut season at the Bernabéu earned him the title of La Liga’s best player.

“I think he is going to be one of the best players of this new generation,” Ronaldo said of Bellingham. “It’s the same [as Yamal], great talent, huge potential.

“You go to a club where the environment is clean, that it’s good, and you grow like the others, like [Madrid players] Camavinga, Rodrygo, like Vinícius. I think he [Bellingham] is in a team that will help him become a top player.”

Two best saves in my career – Arteta thrilled by David Raya’s stunning double save

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya received high praise from both his manager Mikel Arteta and Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini following a remarkable double save that helped secure a 0-0 draw in the Champions League on Thursday.

Had it not been for Raya’s exceptional stop of Mateo Retegui’s penalty in the 51st minute, along with his swift reaction to deny Retegui’s subsequent header, Arsenal could have faced a frustrating loss in their opening group match against the Serie A team.

“I witnessed two of the best saves I’ve ever seen in my career from David in that moment,” Arteta said.

“If you can’t win, you have to take the point. We started well, then we lost control and were very inconsistent. We didn’t suffer defensively, apart from the penalty.”

Atalanta manager Gasperini was equally in awe.

“He’s a cat. The first save is good, but the rebound is unbelievable. The goalkeeper has been crucial,” the Italian coach said.

Raya was modest about his effort, saying he had been lucky and also paid tribute to Arsenal’s goalkeeping coach, Inaki Cana, whom he consulted while VAR checked the penalty decision.

“It was a long time to decide if it was a penalty, so I took the decision to go to the side, and I went to speak with the goalie coach about where to go and where not to go,” he said.

“He helped me a lot in every aspect, so credit to him.”

While it was a solid start by Arsenal, Arteta was less happy with his team’s performance as they offered little in the way of attacking threat against last season’s Europa League winners.

“We had moments with the ball, but we never got it into dominance or threat,” he said.

“The first 25 minutes we read their approach really well. After that we lost control of the game.”

Al Ettifaq FC honours Ghana’s Prince Tagoe upon his visit to former club

Former Ghanaian international striker Prince Tagoe was warmly received upon his return to Saudi Arabia, where he paid a visit to his former team, Al Ettifaq FC.

Tagoe, famously dubbed the “Prince of Goals,” enjoyed a successful spell with the Saudi Arabian club from 2007 to 2009, earning a reputation as one of the finest Ghanaian players to feature in the league and achieving cult hero status.

During his trip, the club presented him with a commemorative plaque and an Al-Ettifaq jersey.

Tagoe also interacted with the youth squad and is reportedly being considered for a potential scouting position with the club.

“Family, words cannot express the joy I feel in my heart for the opportunity to be with you once again and the love I have for you all.

A humble and appreciative thank you to everyone who made this visit memorable.

God bless you all! Wishing my beloved Ettifaq good luck in tomorrow’s game,” Tagoe shared on social media.

Tagoe will be at the Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium to watch Al-Ettifaq play against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.

  • These are the 11 reasons why CAF banned stadia in Ghana- GFA list

These are the 11 reasons why CAF banned stadia in Ghana- GFA list

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has outlined the reasons behind the ban on Ghana’s stadiums by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

He cited issues such as insufficient floodlighting, malfunctioning scoreboards, and inadequate referee changing facilities.

Furthermore, Asante Twum highlighted additional concerns, including the condition of the playing surface, press conference facilities, media areas, dressing rooms, technical benches for the teams, and the Venue Operational Centre (VOC).

“The CAF officials came to Ghana for inspection, and they raised several issues.

There were problems with the pitch, press conference area, media zone, floodlights, scoreboard, dressing rooms, referee’s changing room, technical area, referee’s technical bench, the two teams’ technical benches, and the venue operational centre (VOC), which monitors CCTV cameras for security reasons,” he explained during an interview with Evans Mensah on Accra-based JoyNews.

Asante Twum pointed out that CAF first raised concerns about these deficiencies during the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, which resulted in the ban of the Cape Coast Stadium.

He further noted that the same problems led to the suspension of the Baba Yara Stadium in 2024.

Togo rejects Ghana’s proposal to use Kégué Stadium for Sudan match

Togo has allegedly declined Ghana’s request to use the Kégué Stadium for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.

As reported by PURE TV, Togo stated that they need the stadium in optimal condition for their own upcoming qualifier against Algeria.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) had been considering relocating Ghana’s home match to Togo, with Ghanasoccernet revealing that both Togo and Ivory Coast were options, with Togo initially being the preferred choice.

However, following Togo’s refusal, Ivory Coast is now Ghana’s only alternative to host Sudan.

The GFA is searching for a new venue after CAF revoked the Baba Yara Sports Stadium’s approval for Ghana’s remaining home fixtures.

Ghana currently lacks an international-standard stadium, as all its national venues have been shut down for renovations.

The National Sports Authority (NSA), responsible for managing the country’s stadiums, closed Baba Yara Sports Stadium after criticism of its poor pitch condition following the Black Stars’ loss to Angola.

In addition, the NSA also closed the Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Sports Stadium, both of which were also found unsuitable for hosting matches.

Should these venues remain unavailable, Ghana will be forced to play its upcoming matches at a neutral location, as none of the three national stadiums meet CAF’s category 3 requirements.

The first-leg match between Ghana and Sudan is scheduled for October 7, 2024.

Ghana falls six positions in the latest FIFA rankings after disappointing display in September

Ghana has fallen six spots in the latest FIFA rankings following a disappointing performance by the Black Stars in September.

The team now sits in 70th place globally and 14th in Africa.

Previously ranked 64th worldwide and 12th on the continent, Ghana’s standing dropped after a loss to Angola and a 1-1 draw with Niger.

These results in the September fixtures have negatively impacted the four-time African champions.

In contrast, Nigeria’s position remained stable despite securing both a win and a draw during the same period, maintaining their sixth place in Africa.

At the top of the African rankings, Morocco remains the leader, followed by Senegal, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Tunisia.

  • Stay away! Tanzanian president Samia warns foreign envoys on abductions

Stay away! Tanzanian president Samia warns foreign envoys on abductions

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan issued a strong warning to foreign diplomats on Tuesday, cautioning them against “interfering” in the country’s internal matters.

This comes amid accusations that Tanzania’s state security agencies are behind a series of abductions and killings of opposition figures, as the nation gears up for local government elections in November.

In her first major statement on the wave of violence, President Samia emphasised that her government is fully capable of addressing the issue without external intervention.

She criticised the statements of condemnation made by several Western diplomatic missions in Tanzania, stating they were unwelcome and violated the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Article 41 of the convention outlines that diplomats must refrain from interfering in the domestic affairs of the host country.

The president made it clear that Tanzania would not accept directives from foreign nations on how to handle the investigation of politically motivated violence.

This statement followed the escalating violence, most notably the September 6 abduction and murder of Ali Mohamed Kibao, a senior member of the Chadema opposition party.

Kibao was forcibly taken in broad daylight by suspected security agents from a bus near the outskirts of Dar es Salaam.

His lifeless body was found in a nearby bush hours later, with his face partly disfigured by a chemical believed to be acid.

The incident came on the back of a growing number of disappearances, detentions, and beatings involving political and human rights activists in what the United States mission in Dares Salaam described in a September 9 statement as “efforts to disenfranchise citizens ahead of (the) elections.”

The European Union, British and Canadian High Commissions, and Norway and Switzerland embassies also issued a joint statement condemning the trend on September 10.

While the US embassy in Dar called for an “independent, transparent, and prompt investigation” into the incidents, the other five missions called for a “thorough inquiry.”

In a televised speech at an event in Moshi on Tuesday marking the 60th anniversary of the Tanzania Police Force’s formation, President Samia said “outsiders” should not claim to be more pained by the events than Tanzanians themselves.

“It is our own responsibility to find out why they (abductions and killings) are happening at this moment in time. We know what we need to do as a sovereign nation, and do not appreciate other countries telling us to do one, two, or three,” she said.

“I believe these statements were not sanctioned by the heads of state of those countries, but I have my own ways of checking with my fellow presidents, and once I confirm that they were not, I will lodge formal complaints with them.”

Before the diplomatic corps raised concerns, President Samia had already ordered a swift investigation into Ali Mohamed Kibao’s murder, with instructions for the findings to be made public as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa also addressed the matter on Monday, suggesting that while it’s “easy to blame the police,” there could be other hidden forces causing disruptions during election periods.

Chadema party leader Freeman Mbowe has expressed distrust in Tanzanian law enforcement and called for Britain’s Scotland Yard to be involved in the investigation. He emphasised that the party is sceptical about local authorities conducting a “proper and transparent” inquiry.

Chadema has further warned that it will organise nationwide protests if there is no significant progress in the investigation by next week.

Kibao’s killing, along with other violent incidents, has triggered public outrage and intensified concerns about safety as the country prepares for the municipal elections on November 28.

These elections are seen as a prelude to next year’s general election, where President Samia will seek re-election, and the ruling CCM party aims to retain legislative control until 2030.

NPP threatens protest if EC accepts NDC’s call for a voters’ register audit – Justin Koduah

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, has announced that the party will stage its own protests if the Electoral Commission (EC) permits an independent forensic audit of the 2024 provisional voters’ register, as requested by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, September 19, 2024, Kodua wrote, “If the EC accepts the position of the NDC, the NPP will also hit the streets.”

This follows a nationwide demonstration by the NDC on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, under the banner of the ‘Enough is Enough Demo.’

The protest was aimed at pressuring the EC to audit the provisional voters’ register ahead of the December 2024 elections.

The NDC claims that the current register is riddled with irregularities and cannot ensure a free and fair election, a position the EC has refuted.

“The irregularities in the Provisional Voters Register (PVR) are not minor oversights or clerical errors; they indicate a deliberate manipulation of the voter database.

“These irregularities pose a significant and immediate threat to the credibility of the 2024 General Elections.

We demand that the Commission takes swift action to preserve the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process and ensure the stability and security of the nation,” the NDC stated in its petition.

The NDC said it has found more than 243,000 unauthorised voter transfers and that the transfers were made without the

knowledge and consent of the affected voters and therefore raised significant questions about who approved them and what role EC officials may have played in facilitating such changes.

  • Vote for Bawumia and I will crack down on Chinese wholesale businesses – Kennedy Agyapong vows

Vote for Bawumia and I will crack down on Chinese wholesale businesses – Kennedy Agyapong vows

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has pledged to take firm action against Chinese businesses operating in Ghana’s retail sector should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secure victory in the upcoming December 2024 elections.

He made this statement while rallying support for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during a campaign event on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

Agyapong’s promise is a response to the increasing concerns raised by local traders about foreign influence in the Ghanaian market. Many local businesses have struggled to compete with foreign retailers, particularly Chinese-owned businesses, leading to frustration within the local trading community.

The Assin Central MP expressed his commitment to enforcing the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, which reserves the retail sector for Ghanaians.

“What the Chinese are expected to do is wholesaling and not engage in the commercial or retail market. We won’t allow them to do it,” Agyapong stated.

Agyapong urged market women and local traders to vote for Bawumia, promising that the NPP would protect local businesses and improve their livelihoods.

He emphasised that Chinese nationals would be restricted to wholesale operations only, with retail remaining exclusively for Ghanaians.

He also advised Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, against opposing his stance in the future should the NPP win power in the December 2024 elections.

“And as I have said before, I will walk my talk, so Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh will be courageous because once I do it, the media will misreport my deeds and cause panic amongst the NPP. We have to empower our own citizens,” he added.

The NPP has outlined several policies to support local businesses if it wins the 2024 elections. Dr. Bawumia has proposed the establishment of an SME Bank to provide targeted financial support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which employ over 80% of Ghanaians.

Other proposals include a flat-rate tax system to simplify taxation for all income levels and create a business-friendly environment aimed at fostering economic growth.

ACEP calls for the dismissal of Management of ECG over GH¢9bn loss

Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) is calling for the removal of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) management, citing poor leadership and alleged mismanagement.

ACEP highlights that revenue losses have surged dramatically, rising from GH¢295 million in 2017 to a staggering GH¢9.7 billion in 2022.

During a press conference on Thursday, September 19, ACEP’s Policy Lead on Petroleum and Conventional Energy, Kodzo Yaotse, urged for the dismissal of ECG’s management due to their failure to effectively improve revenue collection.

“The growing fiscal burden imposed on the economy by ECG’s poor performance has become a ticking time bomb that can undermine the progress made after the domestic and international debt restructuring to keep Ghana solvent.

“With the level of debt accumulation and the intervention required of the state, it is just a matter of time before Ghana is plunged into another debt crisis.

With IPP debt mounting and gas suppliers and transporters demanding payments, the pressure on the government to sacrifice social investment is high.”

Mr. Yaotse also called for an end to what he said is a wasteful use of state resources, which he said cannot be allowed to persist.

“The political lethargy to enable ECG to deliver value to the people of Ghana continues to hurt Ghana’s budget and, by extension, development efforts.

The Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP) estimates that realised power sector shortfalls between 2019 and 2023 were about US$8.25 billion.

“This is a sheer waste of public resources that cannot persist. In light of the above.”

Liberia extradites Guinea’s fugitive involved in stadium massacre

Guinea’s most wanted fugitive, a former high-ranking military officer who escaped from prison last November, has been extradited from Liberia along with his son, according to officials.

Ex-Colonel Claude Pivi, who had been convicted in absentia for his involvement in the 2009 stadium massacre of opposition supporters in Conakry, will now serve his life sentence, the country’s military prosecutor confirmed.

Pivi and his son, Verny Pivi, were apprehended during a routine security check near the Guinea-Liberia border on Tuesday.

Photos circulating online show a frail-looking Claude Pivi in handcuffs next to his son, who is accused of masterminding his father’s prison escape.

Former military leader Moussa Dadis Camara, who was also freed during the jailbreak, was quickly recaptured and remains in custody, serving a 20-year sentence for crimes against humanity.

The charges against Pivi and Camara relate to the September 2009 massacre, in which Guinean troops opened fire on an opposition rally, killing over 156 people and raping dozens of women.

The rally was organised to demand a return to civilian rule, marking one of the darkest moments in Guinea’s history.

Known as “Coplan,” Pivi served as minister of presidential security in Camara’s regime.

The authorities had offered a reward of $58,000 (£43,700) for his capture.
Pivi is back in the main prison in Conakry to serve his life sentence, military prosecutor Colonel Aly Camara said on Thursday.

“He was brought back to the central prison to serve his sentence in accordance with the law,” Col Camara added.

Fatoumata Diariou Camara, one of those caught up in the violence at the rally, told the AFP news agency she was “overjoyed” that he had been recaptured.
“I pray that he will remain in prison forever,” she said.

  • De Bruyne may miss Man City-Arsenal clash due to injury

De Bruyne may miss Man City-Arsenal clash due to injury

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hinted that Kevin De Bruyne could be doubtful for Sunday’s clash against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

The midfielder was forced off with an injury during City’s 0-0 draw against Inter Milan on Wednesday night.

De Bruyne was substituted at half-time after sustaining the injury late in the first half while chasing a through ball from Jack Grealish. His availability for the Arsenal match remains uncertain.

“We’ll assess tonight and I’ll have more information tomorrow,” said Guardiola.

“The doctors said to me he wasn’t right to play but I was thinking about changing it at half-time anyway.

“When you are alone and lose easy balls, it’s a counterattack—it’s impossible to stop it. You have to be more precise. It happened especially on the left side with Kevin. We lost the ball without pressure, and when that happens, they can kill you.”

Despite starting their Champions League campaign with a draw, Guardiola insisted he was happy with City’s performance.

Inter had chances, but so did Guardiola’s team, including two late headers from substitute Ilkay Gündogan.

“It’s at the start of the season,” said the City boss.

“The displays will be better, with more time we will be better. We played so good. I love my team, we are a fantastic team. Inter are a team that defends really well. They are the masters of defending and transitions as well.”

Inter’s best opportunity fell to former Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who blazed over the crossbar from inside the penalty area.

“They put in a giant performance,” said boss Simone Inzaghi.

“I asked them to play exactly as they did. We all know Manchester City and what they are capable of. We knew we had to pull out all the stops and play a great game, and we did it. When we work well as a team, we make it hard for everyone.”

  • Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard to be sidelined for weeks over ankle injury

Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard to be sidelined for weeks over ankle injury

Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard will be sidelined for an extended period due to a serious ankle injury sustained while representing Norway, according to manager Mikel Arteta’s statement on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old midfielder was forced to leave the pitch during Norway’s Nations League match against Austria on September 9 in Oslo and was seen returning to London on crutches.

Ødegaard’s injury caused him to miss Sunday’s North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Arteta provided this update in anticipation of Arsenal’s first Champions League match against Atalanta in Bergamo on Thursday.

“The scans showed that he’s got some damage, especially on one of the ligaments in the ankle,” said the Spaniard.

“It’s something quite significant, so we’re going to lose him for a while.”

Arteta, whose side are second in the league and two points behind Manchester City, said he hoped it would not be months, “but let’s see.”

Ødegaard has become a key player for Arsenal, missing only a handful of games over the last three seasons, and a lengthy absence will come as a huge blow.

“He’s our captain. He’s been one of the biggest and best players in our team,” continued Arteta.

“Our identity is very linked to how he plays and behaves. It’s a big test for the team to see how able we are to show a different face.”

Norway coach Stale Solbakken told VG newspaper he had been fully updated about the injury and was “preparing for a life without Martin.”

“We have to take it week by week and day by day. Some types of damage go faster and some go slower,” he said.

  • Real Madrid’s Courtois supports Rodri’s decision to take strike action

Real Madrid’s Courtois supports Rodri’s decision to take strike action

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has backed Rodri’s warning that players could be close to taking strike action over the number of games they’re being asked to play.

Speaking in a news conference on Tuesday, the Manchester City midfielder said a players’ strike was “close” over football’s hectic fixture list, saying: “I think it’s the general opinion of the players… If it keeps this way, there will be a moment where we have no other option.”

Both Madrid and City are competing in UEFA’s revamped Champions League this season, and are also set to feature in FIFA’s new Club World Cup in the United States next summer, which could see both teams play a total of over 70 games this campaign.

“Rodri is right,” Courtois said on Wednesday, in a conversation with popular Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos. “There are a lot of games. A fan wants to see the best, and we have to find a balance, there are too many games, and there are more injuries.

“With the Nations League, the Club World Cup, games are added. People say we earn a lot of money, that we can’t complain, and that’s true, but we have to find a balance, because the best [players] aren’t always going to be able to play.”

Real Madrid kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 victory over Stuttgart on Tuesday.

However, in LaLiga, the reigning Spanish champions have struggled to find their best form and are already trailing leaders Barcelona by four points.

Amid this, speculation has grown around the future of forward Rodrygo following the arrival of Kylian Mbappé. Despite the rumors, the Brazilian played a key role in the match, assisting Mbappé’s first Champions League goal for the club.

Meanwhile, Madrid’s media has coined the nickname “BMV” to describe the club’s attack, referring to the trio of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, and Vinícius Jr., notably leaving out Rodrygo from the moniker.

“Journalists want to put three letters, and they put Jude, Vini and Mbappé,” Courtois said. “In the dressing room we know the importance and quality of Rodrygo.

He doesn’t have to get angry, but if he plays better, let him get angry.”

England’s Jay Emmanuel-Thomas arrested for reported £600k cannabis smuggling

British footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been charged in connection with an attempt to smuggle cannabis valued at £600,000 ($800,000) through a UK airport.

Emmanuel-Thomas, who began his career at Arsenal and currently plays for Greenock Morton in Scotland’s second tier, was arrested at his home near Glasgow on Wednesday, according to reports from the Press Association (PA).

The 33-year-old forward was taken into custody and transferred to Carlisle, in northern England, for questioning by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Emmanuel-Thomas started his professional career at Arsenal, making five appearances, including a Champions League outing against Shakhtar Donetsk in November 2010.

He later had stints with Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, and Aberdeen, and also played for PTT Rayong in Thailand.

The drug-smuggling case emerged after customs officers discovered approximately 60 kilogrammes (130 pounds) of cannabis in two suitcases at Stansted Airport, which had arrived on a flight from Bangkok on September 2.

Two women were also arrested in connection with the incident.

Emmanuel-Thomas is set to appear in court in Carlisle on Thursday, facing charges related to the importation of Class B drugs.

In August, the National Crime Agency issued a warning to travelers arriving from Thailand, Canada, and the United States, highlighting the severe penalties for attempting to smuggle cannabis into the UK.

Those convicted face up to 14 years in prison.

  • PSG is the star, not an individual – PSG’s Luis Enrique on Kylian Mbappé exit

PSG is the star, not an individual – PSG’s Luis Enrique on Kylian Mbappé exit

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique is embracing the opportunity to lead a team without a global superstar, following the recent departures of Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappé.

After PSG’s 1-0 victory over Girona in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, Enrique was asked about how his squad is adjusting to life without a star player.

Speaking to TNT Sports Brasil, he responded: “Yes, there is a star, one that shines brighter than anything else—and that is the team itself. The team is the star.”

“It’s amazing. It is a feeling that I try to instil in my players. You see it on the pitch, one for all and all for one, like the Three Musketeers. That is marvellous in a team sport.”

Throughout last season, Luis Enrique frequently expressed his annoyance at the persistent questions from journalists about Kylian Mbappé during press conferences.

Mbappé, now 25, left Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) this summer after his contract ended, capping off his final season at the club with a career-best 44 goals in 48 appearances.

The French forward departed as a free agent, joining Real Madrid just a year after PSG had already lost Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Messi, the Argentina captain, left PSG in July 2023 to sign with Inter Miami following a two-year stint in Paris.

Shortly afterward, Neymar moved to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, bringing his six-season journey with PSG to an end.

Despite losing these star players, PSG, who are chasing their fourth consecutive league title, have started the new campaign in dominant fashion, winning all their matches and scoring 13 goals in their first four league games.

  • Ronaldo teaches us how to win, but he doesn’t control the club – Al Nassr CEO insists

Ronaldo teaches us how to win, but he doesn’t control the club – Al Nassr CEO insists

Al Nassr CEO Guido Fienga has clarified that while Cristiano Ronaldo is a key figure in the team, he does not control the club’s operations.

Fienga’s remarks address speculation that Ronaldo has significant influence over both on- and off-field decisions at the Saudi club.

These comments come in the wake of Al Nassr’s decision to part ways with Portuguese coach Luis Castro, who was dismissed after securing only one win in three league matches.

The club has since appointed Italian manager Stefano Pioli as his replacement.

At a club event on Wednesday, Fienga said: “Cristiano Ronaldo is our captain, and he is the strongest player in the world, not just technically but how he behaves.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWVZOehbQFc

“Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t control the club, but obviously, being the No. 1 in the world, he gives the direction of where we have to go and which are the targets we have to reach. He is a winner, and we ask him to teach us how to win.”

Since joining Al Nassr from Manchester United in December 2022, 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo has secured only one title, the Arab Club Champions Cup.

Despite his illustrious career as a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Ronaldo’s time at the Saudi club has seen mixed success, though he has impressively scored 62 goals.

Ronaldo’s deep desire for more silverware was evident in his emotional reaction after Al Nassr’s defeat to Al Hilal in the King’s Cup final in May, a loss that left the team without any major trophies for the season.

“He is a winner and we ask him to teach us how to win,” Fienga said of the former Real Madrid star.

“We want to win with him this year and reach the best target that we can. Cristiano is part of the team and we are very happy to have him in our team.”

Ronaldo missed Al Nassr’s 1-1 draw with Al Shorta in the revamped Asian Champions League on Monday with illness, in what turned out to be Castro’s last game in charge.

“Step by step, we will improve,” Fienga said

“This summer, don’t forget we invested almost $100 million in new players. I believe we did a good job in order to reinforce the club with some good players that we needed… we need to work and give stability to the club to work and to produce the value and not destroy the value every six months.”

    Present a long-term plan – Akufo-Addo charges Sports minister

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has been assigned the responsibility of presenting a comprehensive long-term infrastructure proposal to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, according to a report by Nhyira FM.

The proposal is expected to outline the renovation work required at key national stadiums across the country.

A key highlight of the plan is the installation of hybrid pitches at major facilities, including Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Accra Sports Stadium, and the University of Ghana Stadium.

Additionally, the Tamale Stadium is slated for an upgrade to meet FIFA standards, with plans to convert its surface into a high-quality astroturf.

The proposed infrastructure plan aims to tackle Ghana’s deficiency in having a stadium that meets the requirements for hosting a CAF Category 3 event.

Despite having four national stadiums, all have been declared unsuitable for international matches.

This situation leaves the Black Stars in jeopardy, as they may have to play their remaining home fixtures for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at a neutral venue.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, previously the only approved facility, has now also been rejected by CAF, further compounding the problem.

NPP to lose votes in Ashanti, NDC win in 11 regions – Latest survey reveals

A recent survey conducted by SBM Intelligence forecasts that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is likely to secure victories in 11 regions during the 2024 elections.

The survey indicates that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) may see a reduction in support within its traditional stronghold, the Ashanti Region, where their projected vote share is expected to drop.

The report, titled ‘Ghana’s 2024 Elections: A Preview,’ is accurate as of Thursday, September 12, 2024.

The NPP is anticipated to receive approximately 70.5% of the votes in Ashanti, a decrease from the 72.8% it achieved in the 2020 presidential election.

Additionally, the survey suggests that the NPP will encounter significant competition from the NDC in the Northern, Western North, and Oti regions.

“In the elections, the NDC is projected to secure victory in 11 regions, including all three swing regions, leaving only five regions for the NPP,” the September 2024 report showed.

More so, the NDC is expected to easily maintain three out of the five regions,, namely the the Upper East, Upper West, and and Savannah, and battle the NPP for the Northern region.”

“In the North East, Bawumia’s candidature is expected to help the NPP maintain its win and improve its vote share from 51.40% to 55.8%.”

The report comes with barely 80 days left for the December 7 election as political parties intensify campaigns to solicit for votes.

Meanwhile, over 20 presidential aspirants have successfully submitted their nomination forms to the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest the election.

Police obtain court injunction to prevent ‘Occupy Julorbi House’ demo

An Accra High Court has issued an injunction halting the planned three-day demonstration by the pressure group Democracy Hub.

The injunction comes in response to concerns raised by the Ghana Police Service regarding the protest’s location near the Jubilee House, the seat of government.

The court’s order, issued on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, bars the group from proceeding with the demonstration, which was scheduled for September 21 and September 23, 2024.

A post shared on X on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, by a user of the app named Kwame Asante stated, “The Ghana Police Service has secured an injunction against the upcoming 3-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, which was scheduled for 21st to 23rd September.”

The demonstration aimed to call on the President and the Economic Management Team to take action on issues related to economic mismanagement and corruption.

Vote for Bawumia so that I can get an appointment – K.T Hammond to NDC supporters

Minister of Trade and Industry and Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Kobena Tahir Hammond, has called on NDC supporters in his constituency to shift their support to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections.

During a recent campaign, K.T. Hammond encouraged them to back the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasising that their votes would not only ensure his continued appointment but also support the NPP’s ongoing digitisation initiatives.

“The NDC members here looking at my face like I am a wizard, change your mind and vote for the NPP. Change my mind and vote for Dr Bawumia,, so that the NPP will win the 2024 elections, and I will get an appointment.

Those looking at me, I want you all to become members of the NPP by force. Change your mind and vote for the NPP so that we win the elections.

When he becomes president, he will continue the digitisation agenda; he will bring it to your doorstep,” he stated in a video shared by Joy News on their X page on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

  • Guru wins UG SRC election

    Guru wins UG SRC election

Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has won the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election.

After weeks of intense campaigning filled with disqualifications, legal challenges, and other hurdles, Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, secured victory with 50.7% of the vote, amounting to 9,455 ballots.

Out of a total voter turnout of 18,659, Guru’s disqualification was overturned by the Appeals Board last week.

The disqualification, initially based on his status as a non-resident student, was challenged by the SRC, who argued that he and another candidate did not meet the necessary criteria.

Despite legal debates, the judicial board eventually ruled that the disqualification was valid. However, the Vice Dean intervened, ordering the inclusion of both disqualified candidates and their running mates on the list of presidential contenders.

“You are further directed to carry out the balloting for all the SRC candidates vetted by the vetting committee on Monday (September 16, 2024), between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs (ODSA).”

“You are to immediately communicate this to all the candidates to assemble at the premises of the ODSA for the balloting, “ the September 15 letter read.

The letter further instructed the school’s Electoral Commission to submit the list of candidates and their respective positions to the University of Ghana’s Computer Services (UGCS) following the balloting process.

Today the elections were held, and Guru, along with his running mate, emerged victorious with 50.7% of the vote, securing 9,455 ballots.

Guru and his team will now lead the SRC, overseeing its activities for the 2024/25 academic year.

  • TEWU announces indefinite nationwide strike

    TEWU announces indefinite nationwide strike

Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has aligned with the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) in launching a nationwide strike starting Friday, September 20, 2024.

This move follows the government’s failure to address their longstanding demands for better working conditions, despite multiple protests and negotiations.

In a statement, TEWU highlighted the government’s inability to fulfil previously agreed conditions, including the lack of implementation of Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus allowances.

Although the Ministry of Finance approved these allowances in a letter dated August 2, 2024, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has not yet executed the payments for TEWU members.

The union also expressed concerns over the government’s ongoing neglect of other critical issues.

TEWU also claimed that the government has failed to remit eight months’ worth of Tier Two pension deductions, which were taken from employees’ salaries but not transferred to the union’s scheme for proper management.

The SSA-UoG, which began its strike on Monday, September 16, 2024, expressed similar frustrations over the government’s failure to honour prior agreements.

With TEWU members now joining the industrial action, the strike is expected to disrupt operations at public universities across Ghana.

The union urged the government to resolve these outstanding issues to ensure a secure retirement for its members and to avoid further interruptions to the academic calendar.

AS Roma names Ivan Juric as new coach after Daniele De Rossi’s dismissal

AS Roma have announced the appointment of Ivan Juric, previously the manager of Torino, as their new head coach.

This decision follows the dismissal of Daniele De Rossi earlier on Wednesday, after a series of four winless Serie A games.

Juric, a Croatian coach, has agreed to a contract that runs until June of the coming year.

Italian reports suggest that his contract could be extended if Roma secures a spot in the Champions League this season.

Ivan Juric, 49, resigned from his role at Torino at the end of last season after a three-year tenure where the team regularly finished in the middle of the Serie A table.

He now becomes AS Roma’s third manager in just eight months.

Juric began his coaching career in 2011 as an assistant to Gian Piero Gasperini at Inter Milan and Palermo.

He subsequently led Genoa and Hellas Verona as head coaches for three years each.

Roma, who recently drew 1-1 with Genoa after conceding a late goal, will face league leaders Udinese at home this Sunday.

Man Utd’s Anthony Martial joins AEK Athens

Former France forward Anthony Martial (28), who left Manchester United in June after nine years at the club, has joined AEK Athens, the Greek top-flight club said on Wednesday.

The France international has signed for the 13-times Greek champions on a free transfer and will earn 2.5 million pounds ($3.30 million) per season, making him one of AEK’s highest earners, British media reports said.

In an Instagram post, AEK welcomed Martial, who has won the Europa League and an FA Cup title at United, scoring 63 Premier League goals for the club in 209 appearances.

AEK, who added former Tottenham Hotspur and Sevilla midfielder Erik Lamela to their squad this summer, currently lead the Super League Greece standings.

They have accumulated 10 points from their first four matches and will host Kallithea on Sunday.

  • Stefano Pioli named as new manager of Ronaldo’s Al Nassr

Stefano Pioli named as new manager of Ronaldo’s Al Nassr

Stefano Pioli, the 58-year-old Italian manager, has been appointed as the new head coach of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, following Luis Castro’s departure.

The announcement was made by the club.

Pioli, who departed AC Milan after last season, had guided them to a second-place finish in Serie A but fell short against Inter Milan, finishing 19 points behind.

Since leaving Milan, where he spent a significant part of his career, Pioli has been without a coaching role.

Now, he is set to lead Al Nassr, currently positioned seventh in the Pro League after three matches with one win and two draws.

The team’s recent draw with Shorta in the AFC Champions League contributed to Castro’s exit, prompting the swift appointment of Pioli.

Throughout his career, Pioli has primarily coached in Italy, managing clubs such as Inter Milan, Fiorentina, and AC Milan.

His notable achievement came with Milan, where he won the Serie A title in the 2021/22 season, solidifying his status as a club legend.

Hearts of Oak, Dreams FC, other teams to host matches at UG Stadium

Accra Hearts of Oak and three other Ghana Premier League teams have moved to the University of Ghana Stadium as their temporary home ground. Joining Hearts of Oak in this transition are Dreams FC, Legon Cities, and Accra Lions.

Previously, these teams, with the exception of Legon Cities, played their home matches at the Accra Sports Stadium.

However, due to the recent closure of the stadium for renovation, they have been forced to find an alternative venue.

The National Sports Authority officially announced on September 17, 2024, that both the Accra Sports Stadium and the Cape Coast Sports Stadium are now closed for renovation work.

The decision to renovate the stadiums follows widespread criticism from Ghanaians after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) declared all national venues in Ghana unsuitable for hosting category 3 matches.

CAF had previously approved only the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, but this approval was revoked after Angola raised concerns about the pitch quality during their 1-0 victory over the Black Stars in September 2024.

In response to CAF’s assessment, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has closed the Baba Yara Stadium for extensive upgrades, with plans to bring the facility up to the required standards ahead of Ghana’s next home fixture.

  • Africa aims for success at Los Angeles 2028 after record performance at Paris 2024 Paralympics

Africa aims for success at Los Angeles 2028 after record performance at Paris 2024 Paralympics

African Paralympic Committee (APC) has set its focus on the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles after achieving a historic milestone at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

Africa secured 64 medals, surpassing the 63 won at the Tokyo 2020 Games, including 23 gold, 16 silver, and 25 bronze medals, with athletes from ten African nations reaching the podium.

North African countries, including Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Egypt, along with Nigeria from West Africa, dominated the continent’s top five performers.

Samson Deen, president of the APC, praised the athletes’ achievements but acknowledged the challenges that need to be addressed in preparation for the next Paralympics.

“African athletes have shown that if our governments and our people lift up support, they are going to perform much, much better,” he stated.

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ud_-6QO6Bz0

As the African Paralympic Committee (APC) looks ahead to the Los Angeles 2028 Games, there is a clear focus on increasing athlete representation.

At Paris 2024, 312 para-athletes from 44 African nations competed, with nine countries sending only a single athlete.

The APC and National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) aim to boost these numbers for future competitions.

In the short term, the APC is working to secure a host for the 2027 African Para-Games, following a partnership with a European sports agency.

Samson Deen has emphasised the need for unity across the continent to strengthen and grow para-sports in Africa.

“The biggest challenge we have is disunity among the African people. When we are united, we have one message. If we are together, we can build a strong Africa in para-sports.”

The Gambia’s chef de mission in Paris, Hagie Drammeh, remarked that para-sports have the potential to breathe hope into the lives of people with disabilities.

“There are many people with disabilities who do not believe sport is the way out. We need to get into most of the sports so that people with impairments… will have life in sports.”

  • Sack the Sports Minister too! – Ablakwa to Akufo-Addo after NSA boss dismissal

Sack the Sports Minister too! – Ablakwa to Akufo-Addo after NSA boss dismissal

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has urged the removal of Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, citing the deteriorating state of the nation’s stadiums.

Ablakwa contends that the minister must be held responsible for the failure of sports authorities to maintain these facilities.

He further criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to dismiss Interim National Sports Authority Director General Dodzie Numekevor, stating that it falls short of resolving the broader issues at hand.

“President Akufo-Addo’s face-saving dismissal of the NSA boss cannot suffice.

The sports minister must equally be fired, and all those responsible for this humongous international disgrace and huge financial loss to the state should be prosecuted.

“Creating one scapegoat is not adequate deterrence for the unprecedented monumental international embarrassment the corrupt and inept Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government has subjected Ghana to,” he wrote on X.

The call for the minister’s dismissal comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew its approval of the Baba Yara Stadium, citing concerns such as an uneven pitch, poor drainage, and insufficient grass coverage.

This decision followed Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against Angola on September 5, 2024.

In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the Ghana Football Association to invite CAF officials to assess the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Stadium to determine if they meet the necessary standards for hosting future Black Stars matches.

  • ‘I make the rules’ – Zlatan Ibrahimovic on role at AC Milan

‘I make the rules’ – Zlatan Ibrahimovic on role at AC Milan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has declared himself “the boss” at AC Milan as he discussed his new executive position with the Serie A club.

After officially rejoining Milan last December as a senior advisor, a move confirmed by the club’s owners, RedBird Capital, Ibrahimovic now plays a key role behind the scenes.

The Swedish football legend, who had two memorable spells with the Rossoneri during his playing days, is tasked with revitalising what he describes as a challenging situation at the San Siro.

“I am the boss, and I am in charge; all the others work for me,” the 42-year-old replied when asked by Sky Sports Italia about his role, via ESPN.

“When the lion goes away, the kittens arrive. When the lion comes back, the kittens disappear. The level is very low, there is too much talk but I only think about working.

I was away for personal reasons, but I have been here since day one. AC Milan enjoyed a strong summer transfer window, bringing in Tammy Abraham, Alvaro Morata, Youssouf Fofana, Strahinja Pavlovic, and Emerson Royal, and Ibrahimovic is pleased with the club’s business.

“It went exactly as we wanted, everything we looked for and was missing we got,” he added. “The last one was Abraham, to provide extra reinforcement in attack.”

Since claiming the Serie A title in 2021-22, AC Milan have watched as Inter Milan have emerged as the dominant force in Italian football. Inter not only secured the league title last season but also reached the Champions League final in 2023.

Milan, on the other hand, trailed their rivals by 19 points in the 2023-24 campaign and currently sit in 10th place after four games of the 2024-25 season.

With a lot of ground to cover, Ibrahimovic faces a tough task in restoring Milan to their former glory, but he appears more than ready for the challenge.

Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, which preceded an awkward interview between Christian Pulisic and Thierry Henry, highlighted the gulf in class between Milan and Europe’s elite, and the USMNT star called for change ahead of this weekend’s Milan Derby.

  • Fans ‘accuse’ Casemiro of attempting to stop Garnacho from mimicking CR7 celebration, pose

Fans ‘accuse’ Casemiro of attempting to stop Garnacho from mimicking CR7 celebration, pose

Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho was seemingly stopped by teammate Casemiro from mimicking Cristiano Ronaldo’s signature celebration during their Carabao Cup clash against Barnsley.

Garnacho was one of three United players to score twice as Erik ten Hag’s team dominated in a resounding 7-0 victory, advancing comfortably to the fourth round.

The Argentina netted on either side of halftime, while Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen also bagged two goals each. Ten Hag expressed satisfaction after Antony successfully converted a penalty, marking his first goal of the season.

Despite the jubilant atmosphere at Old Trafford, Casemiro’s subtle intervention hinted at a desire to keep things in check when Garnacho looked ready to celebrate like Ronaldo after his first goal.

Fans believe Casemiro tried to stop Garnacho from hitting Ronaldo’s iconic celebration, with some suggesting the midfielder didn’t want to see Garnacho get in trouble for mimicking compatriot Lionel Messi’s biggest rival.

“Casemiro was stopping Garnacho from doing Ronaldo celebrations coz they’ll kick him out of the Argentina squad,” wrote @NoodleHairCR7 on X.

@kobbieEraa added: “Unc knew the backlash he was going to receive from Pessi fans.”

Meanwhile, @StraightAtHim said: “Bruno and Casemiro really try and stop him after every goal. But Garnacho is absolutely shameless. I love him.”

“Man, look at the way Casemiro was dragging him so he doesn’t do Ronaldo’s celebration, wrote @paapywes, while @Johnny19United added: “Look at the way Casemiro tells him not to and Garnacho shrugs him off.. love it he does what he wants!”

That’s back-to-back wins for Ten Hag’s side, and they’ll look to keep things going at Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

United will then start preparing for their Europa League opener against Twente, before closing out the month with a blockbuster league clash against Tottenham.
