Lamine Yamal’s football boots has Morocco, Spain and Equatorial Guinea flags on them, see why

Young Spanish football prodigy, Lamine Yamal, has garnered admiration across Africa due to his impressive performances and his African heritage.

Ibrahim Sannie Daara, the former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), highlighted Yamal’s dual African descent.

Yamal’s mother is from Equatorial Guinea, and his father is from Morocco, adding to his appeal on the continent.

Despite his African roots, Yamal chose to represent Spain at the international level. In a gesture of respect towards his heritage, he has incorporated the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea into the design of his football boots.

This act symbolizes his appreciation for his parents and his cultural background.

“Lamine Yamal, at just 16, is the youngest scorer in Euro history. His mother hails from Equatorial Guinea, and his father is from Morocco. Eligible to represent both countries, he proudly wears all three flags on his boots when playing for Spain,” Sannie wrote on X.

The young player stood out as a key performer in Spain’s victorious campaign at Euro 2024.

He played a pivotal role in Spain’s opening goal, assisting Nico Williams in the 47th minute.

Following Cole Palmer’s equalizer, Mikel Oyarzabal secured Spain’s victory with a goal in the 86th minute, assisted by Marc Cucurella.

Maxwell Konadu confident of steering Black Leopards back to PSL

Head coach of the Black Leopards, Maxwell Konadu, is leveraging his extensive experience to help the team regain its spot in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL). The 51-year-old coach signed a one-year contract with the club two weeks ago.

Konadu transitioned to the Leopards from Nsoatreman FC in the Ghana Premier League, where he guided them to their inaugural FA Cup victory.

Konadu’s appointment has revitalised the Leopards’ aspirations to return to top-tier football after their relegation in the 2019/20 season. His impressive coaching background includes notable continental and international experience.

Notably, he served as the deputy coach of the Black Stars during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, playing a pivotal role in Ghana’s qualification.

With a robust resume and a wealth of knowledge, Konadu is expected to bring significant improvements to the team, bolstering their chances of making a strong comeback in the PSL.

“I know about Black Leopards from when they were still in the Premiership, and now that they are in division one, they need to fight back. I am well-experienced on the continent.

I’ve been in the World Cups, AFCON, CHANs…I’ve been everywhere. I want to see if all this experience will help me push Black Leopards to the highest level,” Konadu said, as quoted by SowetanLive.

Konadu emphasised his credibility as a seasoned mentor. “In 2014, Kwesi Appiah was the head coach and I was his assistant. We successfully led the Black Stars to the World Cup in Brazil,” he recalled.

“After that, Appiah left and I was asked to coach the national team on an interim basis and I qualified the team for AFCON 2015.

That’s when Avram Grant came in and we went to the final of the Afcon and got beaten by Ivory Coast on penalties. I [also] won the Ghana Premiership with Asante Kotoko [in the 2011/12 season].”

He stated that, with the facilities of Kenpong, the agreement would be beneficial to both parties.

“With this facility, I believe our collaborative efforts will reach new heights. I have drawn a lot of positives from this visit and believe it will help our cause.”

As part of a collaborative program, three players from Kenpong Academy are currently training with the French club Bastia.

  • Neighbours, colleagues of Trump shooter still in shock – All about “quiet and nice” Matthew Crooks

Neighbours, colleagues of Trump shooter still in shock – All about “quiet and nice” Matthew Crooks

The small Pittsburgh suburb of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, is in shock after the FBI identified a local resident, Thomas Matthew Crooks, as the shooter at Donald Trump’s recent campaign rally.

The incident, which occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania, left one audience member dead and two others critically wounded.

Crooks, a 20-year-old kitchen worker, allegedly opened fire with an AR-style rifle while Trump was addressing the crowd. He was shot dead on the scene by a Secret Service sniper.

Residents of Crooks’ quiet and affluent hometown are struggling to comprehend how a seemingly ordinary young man could be involved in such a violent act.

The FBI has confirmed Crooks as the “subject involved in the assassination attempt on the former president” and stated that an active investigation is ongoing.

    Who shot at Donald Trump?

The FBI used DNA to identify Thomas Crooks, who did not have ID on him at the time of the incident. Crooks hailed from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, approximately 70 km (43 miles) from where he attempted to assassinate Donald Trump.

A 2022 graduate of Bethel Park High School, he had been awarded a $500 prize for excellence in math and science. Crooks worked in a local nursing home kitchen close to his residence.

US media reported that Crooks was a registered Republican but had also donated $15 to the liberal campaign group ActBlue in 2021. On the day of the shooting, Crooks was wearing a T-shirt from Demolition Ranch, a YouTube channel popular for its gun and demolition content.

Authorities believe the weapon used in the shooting was purchased by Crooks’ father at least six months prior. Law enforcement sources revealed that suspicious devices were found in Crooks’ vehicle, and bomb technicians were called in to investigate.

These devices appeared to be capable of being initiated by commercially available equipment found in the vehicle.

Having established Crooks’s identity, police and agencies are investigating his motive.

“We do not currently have an identified motive,” said Kevin Rojek, FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge, at a briefing on Saturday night.

The inquiry into what took place could last for months and investigators would work “tirelessly” to identify what Crooks’ motive was, Mr Rojek said.

Speaking to CNN, Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, said he was trying to figure out “what the hell is going on” but would “wait until I talk to law enforcement” before speaking about his son.

Police sealed off the road to the house where Crooks lived with his parents, CBS News reports.

A neighbour told CBS that officers evacuated her in the middle of the night with no warning.

Bethel Park Police said there was a bomb investigation surrounding Crooks’s home.

Access to the area remains tightly controlled, with police vehicles blocking the roads. Only residents have been allowed in or out.
Law enforcement sources told CBS that they believe there was some degree of planning ahead of the shooting.

How much time was spent in that planning, however, remains the subject of an ongoing investigation.

Police believe he acted alone but are continuing to investigate whether he was accompanied to the rally.

    Who was Thomas Matthew Crooks?

So far, the image of Thomas Crooks as a person remains unclear and somewhat contradictory.

Local news outlet KDKA reported that some young locals who attended school with Crooks described him as a loner who was often bullied and occasionally wore “hunting outfits to school.”

In contrast, another former classmate, Summer Barkley, told the BBC that Crooks was “always getting good grades on tests” and was “very passionate about history.”

“Anything about government and history he seemed to know about,” he said. “But it was nothing out of the ordinary. He was always nice.”
Others simply remembered him as quiet.

“He was there but I can’t think of anyone who knew him well,” one former classmate, who asked to remain nameless, told the BBC. “He’s just not a guy I really think about. But he seemed fine.

Jameson Myers, a former member of the Bethel Park High School varsity rifle team who graduated alongside Crooks in 2022, told CBS that he did not make the team.

“He did not even make the junior varsity team after trying out,” Mr Myers added.

“He never returned to try-outs for the remainder of high school.”

Mr Myers remembers Crooks as seemingly a “normal boy” who was “not particularly popular but never got picked on or anything.”

“He was a nice kid who never talked poorly of anyone and I never thought him capable of anything I’ve seen him do in the last few days.”
Other community members said simply that they were shocked that the alleged perpetrator of the shooting could have come from the quiet, green streets of Bethel Park.

Among them was Jason Mackey, a 27-year-old local man who lives near the Crooks residence and worked at his school while he was a student.
While Mr Mackey said that he did not know Crooks personally, he is still reeling from a sense of disbelief.

“It’s just shocking. You wouldn’t think an event of this magnitude would come right out of your backyard,” he said. “It’s just a crazy situation.”

    Did he hit anyone?

One person was killed and two others were injured in the shooting.

All three victims are adult men and were audience members, CBS News reports.

At a news conference on Sunday, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro identified the deceased victim at Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer fire chief who was killed when he “dived on his family” to protect them.

He said that Comperatore “died a hero”.

A GoFundMe page, organised by the Trump campaign’s national finance director, Meredith O’Rourke, was set up in the hours after the attack, with donations going to the families of the injured.

It has so far raised more than $340,000 (£267,000).

In a post to his Truth Social platform, Trump said he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear” and said he felt the bullet “ripping through the skin.”.

Blood was visible on Trump’s ear and face as protection officers rushed him away.

Trump is “doing well” and is grateful to law enforcement officers, according to a statement published on the Republican National Committee (RNC) website.

Argentina wins 16th Copa America after victory against Colombia

Argentina secured their record 16th Copa America title by defeating Colombia, but the match faced significant delays due to disturbances outside the Miami venue.

The kick-off was pushed back by 80 minutes as trouble erupted with ticketless fans trying to force their way into the Hard Rock Stadium.

This chaos left many fans waiting in the Miami heat, and clashes with police resulted in several arrests and some supporters needing medical attention.

On the field, Lautaro Martinez netted the decisive goal in the second half of extra time from a Giovani Lo Celso assist.

The match had few clear chances, with Colombia’s Jhon Cordoba hitting the woodwork in the first half. Argentina thought they had scored with 15 minutes remaining, but Nicolas Tagliafico’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Lionel Messi, who was forced to leave the game midway through the second half due to an injury, was in tears but celebrated Argentina’s third consecutive major tournament win at the final whistle.

The half-time break was also extended to 25 minutes due to a concert by Colombian popstar Shakira, which was criticized by Colombia’s manager Nestor Lorenzo.

Despite the interruptions and challenging conditions, Martinez emerged as the hero and secured the Golden Boot with five goals in the tournament.

Nana Yaw, an emerging musician from Sowutuom known by his stage name Wyllbee, was tragically lynched at Abuakwa-Tanoso in the Ashanti Region while staying overnight at his girlfriend’s home.

According to a report by EDHUB on X, Wyllbee had travelled from Accra to Kumasi to spend several days with his girlfriend, who, unbeknownst to him, was married to a man living abroad and residing with her in-laws.

The family reported that Wyllbee did not inform any relatives of his journey.

Around 1 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2024, he went outside to urinate and was confronted by some occupants of the compound house, who mistook him for a thief.

Wyllbee reportedly explained that he was there to visit his girlfriend, but she allegedly denied knowing him to protect her marriage, escalating the situation.

The occupants then alerted neighbours, who joined in the confrontation, leading to a brutal beating.

Early in the morning, after the family was informed, Wyllbee was taken to a local hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away after being transferred to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for further medical treatment.

‘Kick me out after 4 years’ – ‘The driver-mate’ slogan – Akufo-Addo’s 2016 ‘begging’ post surfaces

As the December 7, 2024, general elections approach, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also the NPP’s flagbearer, has drawn significant online attention with his recent comments about the polls.

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, while addressing a gathering in Nanung, a community in northern Ghana, Bawumia urged Ghanaians to vote for him to become president. He added that if he fails to meet their expectations, they can reject him when he seeks a second term.

“I am the Vice President; I’ve not been president yet and I want to plead with you. I am going to the contest with my senior, John Mahama; he has been president before, and when he comes, he has only four years.

“When I come, I have eight years, so, if you look at the presidency, do we want four years or eight? After four years, he won’t come but I will come for renewal, so please give me the chance so that I can be accountable,” he is reported to have said.

However, this is not the first time such words have been spoken. To remind Ghanaians of a similar moment, an old Facebook post by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, made when he was the NPP’s flagbearer, quickly resurfaced online.

The post, dated February 22, 2016, reads: “This year, try me too. Give me the chance to show you what I can do. Four years is not so far away. If I come and I don’t succeed, kick me out. God knows my heart and I can assure you that I won’t disappoint you. Progress and prosperity are what I am offering the people of Ghana.”

Akufo-Addo made these remarks while addressing a group of Muslim clerics and chiefs from settler communities in Derma, located in the Tano South Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.

  • UG economist descends on Mahama over claims of 8.1% economic growth rate for 2016

UG economist descends on Mahama over claims of 8.1% economic growth rate for 2016

Development economist George Domfe, a senior research fellow at the Centre for Social Policy Studies in the College of Humanities at the University of Ghana, has described a claim by the former president John Dramani Mahama that Ghana achieved a growth rate of 8.1% in 2016 as deceptive and a complete falsehood.

Dr Domfe made these remarks when he appeared on Saturday, July 13, 2024, on Movement Television in Accra on the Bɛkyerɛ Mu show, hosted by Gordon Asare Bediako.

Dr Domfe, who is also a fellow at the Institute of Progressive Governance, said that at a meeting with the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) held recently, Mahama took on the Akufo-Addo administration, asserting that the 8.1% economic growth he bequeathed to the current government has shrunk drastically.

This, the University of Ghana economist said, is factually inaccurate and a complete fabrication.

“Former president Mahama met members of GUTA recently and declared that the sound economy he left for Akufo-Addo has been greatly mismanaged.

“He stated categorically that he left a robust economy, with a growth rate of 8.1% when he left office. This is a complete lie, very deceptive coming from the former president,” Dr Domfe said.

Domfe could not fathom why press who met the former president at his media encounter on 7 July did not ask him to prove his claim that his government had achieved 8.1% economic growth.

Questioning the professionalism of Ghanaian journalists and other media practitioners, Domfe agued that Mahama’s office “ought to have put him on the right path when he departed from the truth”.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMsHGONfy5w

    “Consistent inconsistencies”

“The economy under Mahama’s last year in office grew at 3.4% and that of the previous year, 2015, was 2.1%. It was 2.8% in 2014. In 2017 [the first year of the Akufo-Addo government], it grew at 8.1%; in 2018, 2018 a decline to 6.2%, and in 2019 it went up marginally at 6.5%,” Dr Domfe said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic came to disrupt the growth rate, throwing things out of gear as the global economic climate succumbed to the effects of the pandemic.

“I was shocked when the former president said that the economy got worse in 2018 and 2019 when he knew he was peddling falsehoods.

“The global community is watching him, and if he wins the election, it is there that they would not give any meaningful support to his government because of these lies he is telling the electorate,” he added.

Dr Domfe said that one of the fundamental flaws of Mahama, the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress, is “his consistent inconsistencies over matters of national importance.”.

“Look at his consistent attacks on Free SHS,” Dr Domfe said. “Today, the same person who said if he had GHC2 billion he would not spend it on Free SHS is claiming ownership of the policy he bastardised.

“The NDC spent millions of cedis on advertisements to denigrate the Free SHS policy, labelling it a political gimmick, an impossibility and all that.

“The global community would get to know him for being an inconsistent leader – that is, if he is able to win the 2024 elections. They will take neither him nor Ghana seriously, and this is not good for the country’s image,” Domfe said.

“He has apologised; let’s move on” – Gyampo on NAPO over Nkrumah’s comments

Professor Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana has urged the Ghanaian public to accept the apology issued by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, recently apologized for his remarks comparing President Akufo-Addo’s contributions to those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In a statement on July 12, NAPO clarified that his comments were not intended to belittle Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy.

“I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor,” his statement said.

The former Energy Minister added that he’s noted the concerns raised after his statement and “regret any discomfort caused.”

NAPO’s apology came days after his statement has been met with condemnation, even from some party stalwarts.

He noted that his comment reflects his personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact.
Commenting on this on the Key Points on TV3 on Saturday July 13, Prof Gaympi said “he has apologised; the fact that he had apologized and the public revulsion should serve as a guide. I think let us move on.”

He further stated that ”the outcome of 2024 have already been decided by Ghanaians in their hearts and minds.”

Ken Agyapong Jr. tells how his father stopped paying his fees over what he did to his siblings

Son of Ghanaian Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, Ken Agyapong Jnr, recently recounted a pivotal decision that transformed his life during an appearance on the Konnected Minds Podcast. While pursuing his studies in the United States, he opted to divert his tuition and his siblings’ fees towards a business venture.

Instead of using the funds for their intended purpose, Ken Jnr seized an opportunity to organize an entertainment event featuring renowned rapper Fabolous.

“Myself, two of my roommates, and three of my friends started a company called High Class Entertainment. So, what we used to do was bring different artistes to campus and off campus as well,” he stated.

He mentioned they had the choice of selecting between Drake or Fabolous, who were charging $5,000 and $25,000, respectively for an appearance.

“We didn’t have the money, but usually my dad would transfer my tuition and some of my siblings’ tuition to my account. So, you know what, Let me use the money when it comes in. I am like, I am going to use the money, we are going to book Fabolous, and when the ticket sales come, I will pay everybody’s tuition and we will call it a day,” he narrated.

His plan, however, did not go as intended as the event was delayed, causing his parents to find out about his delay in paying the tuition and subsequently discovering the reason behind the delay.

“It was easier said than done. Everything was going well, but two weeks before the event, the venue, which was like a high school campus, reached out, saying no, we can’t have the show there. They didn’t think Fabolous would fit the establishment, and it’s a school premises and all that. Now it’s like Things Fall Apart, the book,” he added.

He said the family started receiving calls from his sister’s school about the delay in the settlement of her tuition, which led his father to call him to find out what was happening.

“My dad called and was like, ‘What’s happening?’ but I was like, ‘Hello, hello, I can’t hear you,’ then I cut the line. But before you could say jack, he was in America,” he stated.

Despite the event’s success and eventually settling his tuition, Ken Jnr revealed that his father insisted on discontinuing the payment of his tuition fees, warning him of potential disinheritance if he chose to drop out of school. As a result, Ken Jnr took on the responsibility of financing the remainder of his university education.

“I ended up paying them back, but then my parents were like, ‘No, you are a bad boy. I’m cutting you off; you are on your own now.’ My dad said, ‘You either drop out of school or take out a loan,’ and he said that if I dropped out of school, I couldn’t live in his house,” he said.

Ken Jnr disclosed that he financed the remainder of his education, from sophomore year through his master’s degree, using a loan that he is still in the process of repaying.

Despite his father’s wealth, Ken Jnr emphasized that life has not been handed to him on a silver platter. He highlighted that his entrepreneurial ventures have been instrumental in shaping his life and contributing to his success in managing his own businesses.

A shooting at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night resulted in the deaths of a gunman and one audience member, confirmed by the local district attorney. Another spectator is in serious condition.

During the incident, shots were fired while Trump was addressing the crowd on stage. He sustained injuries and was swiftly attended to by Secret Service agents, who surrounded him after he dropped to the ground. Despite having blood on his face as he was escorted away, Trump raised his fist and shouted to those in attendance.

The Secret Service says Trump is safe and under protective measures. A spokesperson said Trump is “fine” after the “heinous act.”

Following a day of active campaigning for both former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential race, a shooting occurred outside Trump’s rally venue in Pennsylvania.

According to three law enforcement sources, the shooter was positioned outside the venue. Two of these sources mentioned the shooter was on a roof adjacent to the property. While some law enforcement sources referred to the individual as a sniper, specific details remain unclear.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger stated that his chief detective informed him the shooter was located on a building adjacent to the property, but he had no further information on the individual.

“It would have required a rifle,” he said. “It was several hundred yards.”

“I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.

Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”

Biden remained mostly out of public view at his residence in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on Saturday, but was at St. Edmund’s Catholic Church attending Mass when the shooting took place.

According to the White House, Biden received a briefing on the incident from Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Homeland Security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall while in Delaware.

CETAG began their strike on Friday, June 14, 2024, in protest against the government’s delay in implementing the arbitral award and negotiated service conditions.

Despite an NLC order to end the strike on June 20, CETAG continued their industrial action, prompting the commission to hold a hearing where it announced plans to sue the government to enforce its arbitral award orders in CETAG’s favor.

The NLC’s injunction now prohibits CETAG from continuing the strike. Additionally, the NLC is requesting the court to restrain CETAG’s Executives, Officers, Members, Agents, Servants, Employees, and any other associated individuals from further participating in the strike action.

“Counsel for and on behalf of the Applicant herein shall pray this Honourable Court for an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the Respondent herein, whether by Itself, Its Executives, Officers, Members, Agents, Servants, Employees or other persons from further embarking on their strike action which they commenced from 14th June 2024.”

The Commission is seeking an order to compel CETAG to comply with its directive, dated June 21, 2024, and call off the strike action.

“AND FOR an order compelling the Respondent herein, whether by Itself, the Executives, Officers, Members, Agents, Servants, Employees or other persons to comply with the Directive of the National Labour Commission dated 2Is1 June, 2024 to call off the strike action upon grounds contained in the accompanying affidavit and for any further orders as this Honourable Court may deem fit.”

The court will be moved on Thursday, July 18, for a hearing.

Ghana be ready for the consequences – NPP’s Ahiagbah over SSNIT sales termination

Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has raised concerns about the long-term implications following the termination of the sale of SSNIT’s 60 percent shares in four hotels.

On July 12, SSNIT announced the cancellation of the sale of its four hotels to Rock City Hotel, which also declared it would not purchase the SSNIT shares. This decision followed threats from Organised Labour to launch a nationwide strike on Monday, July 12.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ahiagbah recognised the impact of Organised Labour and advocates, expressing sympathy for the workers’ concerns. However, he warned against obstructing a legitimate corporate decision, stressing the potential damage to corporate governance, market confidence, and overall certainty.

Ahiagbah urged careful consideration of the action’s implications, fearing it could have extensive consequences.

“The recent halt of SSNIT’s attempt to sell 60% of its shares in the five hotels is a testament to the power of organized labour and advocates. Their unwavering dedication to the sale has prevailed, sending a clear message.

“However, while this may seem like a victory worth celebrating, we must also consider the precedent we have set. Are we opening the door to future interference in public offerings based on political affiliations?

“This could harm corporate governance, market confidence, and overall certainty. Just as we are bound to respect a referee’s decision in a football game, we must also abide by the outcomes of democratic processes, even if they don’t align with our preferences.

“While I empathise with the workers’ concerns, we must also consider the implications of impeding a legitimate corporate decision. We must deeply reflect on the potential long-term consequences of this precedent.”

Your angry, dissatisfied staff will always leak your crooked plots to us – NDC’s Omane to EC

Director of IT and Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Omane Boamah, has informed the leadership of the Electoral Commission that their staff are disgruntled. He claims that these dissatisfied employees are leaking crucial information to the opposition party.

The former communications minister emphasized that unless the Electoral Commission addresses this growing crisis, the staff will continue to pass on their directives to the NDC. He urged the commission to refrain from interfering in their officers’ work and cautioned against allowing themselves to be manipulated by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Don’t allow yourselves to be used by the failed and incompetent NPP to serve the ends of their dubious so-called STRATEGY!”

    Bawumia shuts down Bimbila

New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer and Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is massively campaigning across the nation, leaving no town, region, or village untouched.

This forms part of his extensive campaign efforts to connect with voters at every level.

A video shared on Twitter by National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) former deputy secretary Koku Anyidho shows a huge crowd with chants and drums cheering on Dr Bawumia during a campaign rally at Bimbila in the Northern Region of Ghana.

The vice president was captured reacting to accolades and cheering on from the MC of the programme to the loud chants of the people.

His new favourite song, King Paluta’s “Aseda,” which appears to be his current campaign song, was also being played in the background.

Koku Anyidoho in his caption, said, ” Bawumia in Bimbila. He is coming across as a go-getter who continues to remain very determined and focused on his campaign, not allowing himself to be swayed away from what he has to do. I keep saying that this type of campaign has nothing to do with GDP/FX rates etc”.

  • SSNIT Hotels sale: Strike is still on until an official SSNIT communiqué is issued – NAGRAT

SSNIT Hotels sale: Strike is still on until an official SSNIT communiqué is issued – NAGRAT

President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has stated that the association would not call off its planned strike until they receive an official communication confirming the cancellation of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) sale of a 60% stake in four of its hotels.

NAGRAT, along with other organised labour groups, had scheduled industrial action to begin on July 15 after the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) approved SSNIT’s controversial plan to sell its hotels.

Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw Baah, expressed confusion over why the NPRA allowed SSNIT to proceed with the deal without further engagement, despite initially ordering SSNIT to halt the process.

Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel withdrew its bid to purchase the hotels, citing negative publicity. Subsequently, a statement from SSNIT, issued just before midnight on Friday, July 12, indicated that the sale to Bryan Acheampong’s hotel had been halted.

The brief statement, signed by SSNIT Board Chair Elizabeth Ohene, who had previously defended the deal, confirmed that the process had been terminated.

SSNIT assured pensioners, contributors and the public of “its commitment to managing the affairs of the Trust prudently for the sustainability of the pension scheme.”

But the NAGRAT president said these developments were not reason enough to end its action.

According to him, in the era of technological advancement, anyone could have fabricated the letter, and until they received an official communique, they would not call off their strike.

Speaking on JoyNew’s Newsfile, he said, “ We are in a technological age and people are capable of doing anything with technology. We want don’t want to take a decision that will [embarrass us] on Monday morning.

“We want to get surety that it is the SSNIT board headed by Elizabeth Ohene who actually took the decision ad communicated same the public.”

Mr. Carbonu stated that once NAGRAT receives an official communication from SSNIT, the leadership will issue a statement regarding their decision. He emphasised that they wanted SSNIT to cancel the sale, and if this is confirmed, the teachers’ union will respond accordingly.

On the same program, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association (GRNMA), announced that her association would not call off its strike, citing SSNIT’s apparent disregard for their concerns.

She highlighted that GRNMA went through numerous steps before deciding on industrial action. Thus, SSNIT issuing a general message without addressing her organization and other labor unions directly will not change their stance.

Madam Ofori-Ampofo criticized SSNIT’s approach, suggesting that the least they could have done was to hold a press conference or issue a formal letter on SSNIT letterhead. Therefore, she confirmed that the strike would proceed as planned on July 15.

NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi clashes with NPP’s Miracles Aboagye over Free SHS

A heated debate erupted on JoyNews’ Newsfile today between the Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, and the Communications Officer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Miracles Aboagye, over the Free Senior High School policy.

During the show, Mr. Gyamfi defended former President John Mahama, claiming that it was under Mahama’s leadership, in accordance with constitutional provisions, that the groundwork for the Free SHS policy was established.

He argued that Mahama had initiated the program and had always supported accessible education for all Ghanaians.

However, Mr. Aboagye strongly disagreed. He asserted that Mahama had criticised the policy and lacked any substantial implementation plans.

The debate became particularly contentious, prompting the host, Samson, to intervene after a moment of intense verbal exchange between the two representatives.

Worry as new breed of mosquitoes invade some districts in Eastern Region – DCEs report

District Chief Executives (DCEs) of four assemblies in the Eastern Region have urged the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to address an outbreak of a new breed of mosquitoes that is causing illnesses in their districts.

The DCEs from Akyeamansa, Achiasi, Birim South, and Birim Central Districts reported that these mosquitoes, commonly found in cocoa farms, are large, black, and have whitish markings.

In separate interviews with The Ghanaian Times on Monday, they noted a rise in malaria cases at local health facilities, stressing the need for a lasting solution to prevent further loss of lives.

Achiase DCE Richmond Amponsah Agyabeng stated, “The situation has become a significant health threat in the region, with numerous health centres reporting cases related to these mosquito bites.”

“Approximately, 300 people across the four districts have been hospitalised, though some, including himself, have since been treated and discharged,” he said.

Mr. Agyabeng reported that a National Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound in the Achiase District had already recorded approximately 30 cases, underscoring the need for immediate intervention.

He noted that the issue began in his district about a month ago, with residents initially self-medicating until it became evident that the problem was more severe than initially thought.

Asare Danso, the DCE for Birim South District, confirmed numerous cases in his district and urged the GHS to find a lasting solution.

The same situation was reported in the other two districts.

Eastern Regional Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr. John Ekow Otoo, confirmed that his department had received official reports from the affected districts. In response, a team of health officials from both district and headquarters levels of the GHS has been dispatched to investigate the matter.

“The findings from this investigation will be communicated once the investigation is completed,” he said.

The mosquito invasion in these districts comes just two weeks after the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reported progress in reducing malaria cases and deaths.

At a recent malaria training program for journalists in Accra, the Director of Public Health of the GHS, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, highlighted that malaria-related deaths had significantly dropped from 2,799 in 2012 to 146 last year.

He noted that the testing rate had increased from 38 percent in 2012 to 98 percent in 2023, while prevalence had declined from 27 percent in 2011 to 8.6 percent in 2022. Additionally, deaths due to malaria have decreased considerably.

However, Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe emphasized that malaria remains a public health threat in the country, and the GHS is committed to achieving a zero mortality rate by 2028.

  • Ablakwa calls for the immediate dismissal of SSNIT, NPRA board members

Ablakwa calls for the immediate dismissal of SSNIT, NPRA board members

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for the immediate removal of board members at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the National Pensions Regulatory Commission (NPRA).

Additionally, he is advocating for the termination of SSNIT’s Director-General, Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, and NPRA’s Chief Executive Officer, John Kwaning Mbroh, from their current roles.

In a Facebook post on July 12, Ablakwa said, “In addition, we demand that the entire SSNIT board, the NPRA board, the SSNIT Director-General and the NPRA Chief Executive Officer must all be sacked without further delay.”

    Background

SSNIT engaged in negotiations with Rock City Hotel, owned by Minister of Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, to sell 60% of its shares in four hotels. This move sparked protests led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, and civil society groups on June 18.

On June 28, the National Pensions Regulatory Commission instructed SSNIT to halt negotiations with Rock City regarding the sale of these hotels, pending further review and consultation.

Subsequently, NPRA approved the sale of SSNIT’s shares in the four hotels, triggering a swift response from Organised Labour. Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, assured Parliament on July 11 that all required procedures had been followed amid criticism of the deal’s impact on pensioners.

Following an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council, Organised Labour announced plans for a nationwide strike starting Monday, July 15, with seven government agencies pledging participation.

In response, Rock City announced its decision not to proceed with the purchase of the hotels. SSNIT subsequently confirmed the termination of its plans to sell 60% of its shares in the hotels.

  • Former NDC MP offers himself, Adongo to Bawumia for debate instead of Mahama

Former NDC MP offers himself, Adongo to Bawumia for debate instead of Mahama

Former Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency under the National Democratic Congress (NDC),Daniel Kwesi Ashaimah has issued a challenge to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He proposed a debate involving himself and Honourable Isaac Adongo, MP for Bolgatanga Constituency, alongside the Vice President.

Ashaimah questioned the Vice President’s call for a debate with former President John Dramani Mahama, suggesting it lacked credibility. He recalled a past incident where Dr. Bawumia had dismissed Mahama’s debate request in 2016, telling him to engage farmers in his hometown instead.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused former President John Mahama of avoiding a live debate, insinuating that Mahama is unable to adequately explain his policies.

Addressing thousands of his supporters yesterday (July 10, 2024) in Bunkpurugu, North East Region, Dr. Bawumia said, “I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, on the country, on governance.” “But I am afraid that he is running away from a debate. His people say he doesn’t want to debate. I have never heard of an opposition leader who doesn’t want to debate. But he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies.”

Mr. Ashaimah, however, lambasted Dr. Bawumia, painting him as lacking integrity and moral strength to initiate a debate.

He argued that a leader who has not clarified why Ghana’s economy is struggling, nor demonstrated his ability to fulfill promises made to his constituents, is not worthy of a debate.

According to Ashaimah, Mahama, as a candidate, has the prerogative to accept or reject a debate with someone he views as dishonest. Ultimately, he asserted that Dr. Bawumia lacks the former president’s sophistication.

Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the former lawmaker said, “In 2016, Mahama called for a debate, and Bawumia told him to go to his hometown and debate with businessmen and tell them why businesses were collapsing. He also went on to tell him to debate farmers about why fertilisers were being sold to them when, in actuality, they were never sold. That was what he told Mahama. Mahama is our flag bearer, and the decision to debate or not debate lies with him.

Bawumia should also travel to Walewale and explain why the promise to build a watermelon factory has not materialised. Mahama requested a debate in 2016, but your government refused to engage in one. You also wrote 177 questions to the late Amissah Arthur, which you have yet to answer. He should travel to Pawlugu and explain to his people why they spent our resources while there is no dam there. He should also explain to Ghanaians why the Bank of Ghana incurred losses of GH₵60.8 billion in two years.

He should also explain why they stole $50 million to dig the world’s most expensive hole. After that, he should return to debate with me (Ashaimah) and Isaac Adongo, so I will show him the Bank of Ghana Hospital, Ridge Hospital, Afari Hospital, Mampong, and Konongo Water projects, and they will show us theirs.

Take a look at the people that are talking and appealing for a debate. We will use the same fundamentals to evaluate you, such as inflation, the exchange rate, cedi depreciation, and debt-to-GDP growth. He should quit joking. Myself and Adongo are ready to debate him any time, any day.”

Mahama-Bawumia debate imminent as IEA announces preparations

Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced significant progress in its preparations to revamp its signature Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates.

Additionally, the IEA encouraged candidates to utilize these debates as a platform to articulate their visions for Ghana in anticipation of the 2024 election.

“The IEA is far advanced in its preparations to reorganize its flagship Presidential and Vice-presidential Debates.

The Institute encourages the candidates to take advantage of the debates to inform Ghanaians of their policies to address the country’s challenges,” the Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr John Kwakye disclosed in a tweet on Saturday.

However, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, has challenged former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC to a live presidential debate.

Speaking to a large crowd of supporters in Bunkpurugu, North East Region, Dr. Bawumia expressed his readiness to discuss his vision and policies for Ghana.

While eager for a debate with Mahama, Dr. Bawumia expressed doubts about its likelihood, suggesting that Mahama might be avoiding such a direct engagement.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, on the country on the governance,’ Dr. Bawumia said.

“But I am afraid that he is running away from a debate. His people say he doesn’t want to debate. I have never heard of an opposition leader who doesn’t want to debate. But he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies.”

Dr. Bawumia also remarked that former President Mahama and his team have not effectively communicated their plans for a 24-hour economy to the people of Ghana.

He suggested that Mahama’s reluctance to engage in a debate stems from a fear of being exposed on this issue.

  • The Ambanis: Bigwigs behind the grand, luxurious Indian wedding

The Ambanis: Bigwigs behind the grand, luxurious Indian wedding

Asia’s wealthiest man, Mukesh Ambani, has been in the spotlight across India in recent months. However, it’s not due to a major business deal or significant charitable contribution but rather the extravagant wedding celebrations of his son that have captivated the nation and beyond.

The festivities, beginning in March, have firmly placed the Ambani family at the heart of countless conversations at dining tables across the country.

Anant Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s youngest son, married his long-time girlfriend Radhika Merchant at a family-owned convention centre in Mumbai on Friday, marking the culmination of six months of lavish celebrations spanning the globe.

While Indian weddings are known for their opulence, the sheer magnitude of the Ambani celebrations may have surpassed even those of former royalty.

The presence of Bollywood’s elite at every event, performances by international pop stars like Rihanna and Justin Bieber, and a gathering of VVIPs have provided endless fodder for the media.

Among the distinguished guests were global figures such as Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Samsung CEO Han-Jong Hee, Bill Gates, Ivanka Trump, former UK Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Tony Blair, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and the Kardashian sisters, highlighting the event’s international allure.

“These are very busy people. They aren’t coming just to have fun,” James Crabtree, author of The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India’s New Gilded Age, told the BBC.

“What this tells you is that global business leaders believe the Ambanis are strategically important and also that they see India as a very big market.”

Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, attended the pre-wedding celebrations in March

    Meet the family

Meet the Ambani family, often hailed as India’s foremost business dynasty. They oversee Reliance Industries, a conglomerate spanning from oil to telecommunications, originally founded by Mukesh Ambani’s father, Dhirubhai Ambani.

Dhirubhai, known for navigating India’s pre-liberalisation policies adeptly, left a controversial yet legendary legacy, amassing considerable wealth for shareholders.

Following Dhirubhai’s death in 2002, his empire was divided between his two sons, Anil and Mukesh, after a contentious succession battle—one of India’s most acrimonious. Since then, their paths have diverged significantly: Anil faced bankruptcy woes, while Mukesh expanded into consumer-focused ventures alongside leading Reliance’s petrochemical stronghold.

Mukesh Ambani’s Jamnagar oil refinery stands as the world’s largest. In recent years, Reliance has introduced esteemed luxury brands like Valentino, Versace, Burberry, and Bottega Veneta to India. Additionally, they own a team in cricket’s wealthiest tournament and the iconic British toy retailer, Hamleys.

In 2021, Reliance acquired Stoke Park, a historic country club in Buckinghamshire, and earlier this year, they struck a significant deal to merge their entertainment platforms with Disney, solidifying Mukesh Ambani’s role in the digital streaming arena with rights to global cricket tournaments and international shows.

Bill Gates with his wife Paula Hurd, Anant Ambani and Mukesh Ambani (L to R)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Reliance Industries embarked on an extensive acquisition spree, bolstered by billions in investments from over a dozen global entities, including Meta and Google.

Their collaboration with Meta aimed to integrate WhatsApp’s vast user base in India with JioMart, their online grocery platform.

Reliance’s aggressive pricing strategies have posed significant challenges to foreign competitors like Netflix and Amazon in the same sectors.

Privately, these foreign players have occasionally voiced concerns about a perceived lack of a level playing field, attributing advantages to local tycoons like the Ambanis, who reportedly benefit from preferential government contracts.

“Foreign players face a difficult choice,” says Mr Crabtree. “They can either fight with Reliance or get into bed with Reliance.

Zuckerburg has chosen to partner with them, while Amazon has decided to fight. But these battles are often very costly, and foreigners end up losing.”

Now, Mukesh Ambani’s next target is financial services, with Reliance entering into a joint venture with US-based BlackRock for a brokering and wealth management business.

Bride-to-be Radhika Merchant (centre) is the daughter of pharma tycoons

For the Ambanis, this wedding goes beyond mere celebration. It’s a display of their influence and the respect they command across business, politics, and entertainment circles, notes Harish Bijoor, a brand strategy expert.

“It’s a testament to their magnetism, drawing people from all walks of life—a personal event that resonates globally, even with consumers of Reliance products who may not attend.”

If Dhirubhai Ambani introduced India’s retail investors to the stock market, Mukesh Ambani has significantly intertwined his businesses with the daily lives of average Indians.

Today, much of what Indians consume, from entertainment to fashion and potentially future transactions, originates from Ambani enterprises.

Thus, a spectacular wedding becomes an ideal platform for the family to reinforce its brand with India’s burgeoning consumer class. Unsurprisingly, the event has captured attention both domestically and internationally.

The first half saw an evenly matched contest, with neither team able to score.

However, Ghana’s Vivian Adjei’s entry in the 46th minute proved pivotal, as Japan seized momentum and broke the deadlock with Mina Tanaka scoring in the 51st minute.

Fuel tanker from Burkina Faso overturns on Kintampo-Kumasi/Accra Highway

A fuel tanker from Burkina Faso has overturned on the Kintampo-Kumasi/Accra highway, disrupting traffic since Friday, July 12, 2024.

The accident occurred following a collision with a sedan, resulting in severe injuries to both drivers—the tanker driver losing an arm and the sedan driver losing both legs.

The blockage at FulaniKrom has stranded hundreds of passengers in their vehicles, with concerns mounting over the risk of a fire or explosion.

Despite the alarming situation, witnesses report that no visible efforts have been made by authorities to clear the tanker and restore traffic flow, exacerbating fears among those trapped at the scene.

Passengers are urgently appealing for prompt intervention from relevant agencies to ensure their safety and alleviate the ongoing crisis on the highway.

“We’ve been stuck here since Friday afternoon, with others saying they got here at 10 am. No food, no water, and as we speak right now at 1:40 am Saturday, there’s no solution yet,” said one passenger.

“We’re told they need permission from the Burkina Faso authorities to discharge the fuel and reposition the tanker. But what if it explodes?” another passenger was questioned.

According to another passenger who spoke on condition of anonymity, a fire service officer revealed that they have been keeping the temperature of the tanker under control since 11 am on Friday.

The fireman also mentioned that all authorities have refused responsibility until the tanker is fully offloaded.

2024 polls: Vote me out if I don’t deliver after my first term – ‘Confident’ Bawumia says

Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed to the Nanung community for their support in the upcoming December elections.

Highlighting his potential to lead for two terms, Bawumia contrasted this with former President John Mahama’s single-term capability.

He urged the people to entrust him with the presidency, promising accountability and the option to reconsider if he does not meet their expectations.

These statements were made during his campaign visit to Bimbilla in the Northern region.

“I am the Vice President; I’ve not been president yet and I want to plead with you. I am going to the contest with my senior, John Mahama; he has been president before, and when he comes, he has only four years.

“When I come, I have eight years, so, if you look at the presidency, do we want four years or eight? After four years, he won’t come but I will come for renewal, so please give me the chance so that I can be accountable.”

Regent Nyelinbolgu Naa Dassana Andani Yakubu of Bimbilla has declared unwavering backing for Dr. Bawumia, citing the NPP government’s impactful initiatives in the constituency.

He voiced optimism that Dr. Bawumia, if elected, would institute a healthcare facility, enhance the Bimbilla municipal hospital, establish a university, and upgrade water infrastructure across Nanung.

NAPO-Nkrumah comments : Kwaku Baako’s wife blasts him for arguing ‘anyhow’

Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako, recently apologised to his wife and another individual after mistakenly downplaying the recency of a controversial comment made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This incident occurred following NAPO’s controversial remark during his official introduction in Kumasi on June 9, 2024.

NAPO claimed that President Akufo-Addo surpasses Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in spearheading development in the country’s history.

Kweku Baako explained that, due to his inability to monitor the event in real-time, he initially dismissed concerns brought to him by his wife and another lady, believing the comments were not recent but from years ago during discussions surrounding the Free SHS policy.

Reflecting on the incident during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on July 11, 2024, Baako explained, “I couldn’t monitor what happened in Kumasi, so in the evening, I was at the base, and Aisha called me and said that this is what NAPO has said and she felt so uncomfortable with it. So, I was like, Are you sure? And she said yes; NAPO has said that.

“So, I told her that NAPO had said the same thing some years ago about the Free SHS policy, so it is not current, but it was years ago. We ended up arguing because she was insisting that it was current.”

He continued, “Then I had another text message from Yaaba Bonney Coffee Shop, so I told her that this is an old script, so she should forget because it was mischievous.

“But late at night, when I scanned Facebook and saw the video, I realised that I had made a mistake by misinforming the two ladies.

I have sent an apology to my wife, and she said she wouldn’t accept it because I argue by heart without background. And I have sent Yaaba also a message for misrepresenting the situation.”

Debate after debate – Dede Ayew on reactions after every Black Stars captain is chosen

Ghana captain Andre Ayew has acknowledged that selecting a new captain for the Black Stars will always spark debate.

Speaking during a lecture on sports psychology at the University of Ghana, the veteran forward emphasized that the future captain must be prepared for the inevitable discussions and scrutiny that come with the role.

“There will always be a debate sooner or later. The next one who is coming, there will be another debate.

The next one who is coming in the next 10 years, there will be another debate.

“Anybody who, tomorrow, is going to be the leader of our national team should be ready for it. There are things you just need to learn from, prepare for, and let brush off,” Andre Ayew said.

No NAPO campaign here if he wouldn’t offer a better apology – Western Region Concerned Youth

A group named Concerned Youth of Western Region has criticised Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh over his apology for claiming that President Akufo-Addo is a superior president compared to the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his outdoor ceremony, the former education minister asserted that no Ghanaian president had outperformed Nkrumah, a statement that sparked backlash across political divides, leading to demands for an apology.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh later visited some chiefs in the Western Region, reiterating that his comments were truthful but misinterpreted.

On July 11, 2024, he issued a statement clarifying that his comments were personal opinions and not meant to disparage Nkrumah, and he apologised.

However, the Concerned Youth of the Western Region deemed his apology insincere and demanded a public apology.

Prof. Boakye Yiadom, a group member, insisted that Dr. Opoku Prempeh should apologise unreservedly so Ghanaians would recognise his repentance.

He also urged the chiefs in the Western Region to prevent Dr. Opoku Prempeh and his party from campaigning in the region unless a public apology is issued.

He maintained that “we believe that NAPO should come again and apologise unreservedly for us to know that he has repented… We will not accept his apology.

We believe that Western regional chiefs should come together and also protest strongly against Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to render an unqualified apology to the Western region, the people, and Ghana as a whole because he is entitled to organise his campaign in the region.”

Mahama accept Bawumia’s debate challenge – Financial analyst advices

Financial analyst Prince Obiri Yeboah has called on John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), to accept the challenge of debating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Vice President Bawumia expressed his readiness to debate former President Mahama on the economy and governance, asserting that the NPP has a superior record. During a youth connect program in Bunkpurugu in the North East Region, Dr. Bawumia provoked Mahama, suggesting that Mahama is avoiding the debate to prevent exposing the weaknesses in his policies.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, and governance. I fear that he is avoiding the debate. His people say he doesn’t want to debate. He doesn’t want to debate because he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies.

“He says he has a 24-hour economy that he cannot explain; it is as empty as an empty barrel. He cannot explain it, none of his people can. They say we will be exporting lions and elephants, but when we meet mano a mano, we can debate, and the country will see where our policies lie. That is where we should go; we should give the country an opportunity to listen to us. But if he chooses not to debate, I will sell my policies to the people of Ghana, and you will take the decision.”

But commenting on the issue in an interview on Ghana Kasa on Kasapa 102.5FM Friday, Financial Analyst Prince Obiri Yeboah said Mr. Mahama should avail himself of the debate because the data and figures on the economy indicate that the NPP government has failed.

“I urge former President Mahama to accept the challenge and debate the vice president. If Ghanaians base their votes on the December 7 election on economic management, then the NPP should lose this election. The economic data shows that the NPP government has failed. There is a lot of hardship in the system.

The reason why Ghanaians are not crying out too much nowadays about the hardship is that they have tuned up their minds, not because there has been a significant improvement in their lives. The data and figures show that things are not right with the economy.

“NPP is good at terminologies, everything they do, they have a unique way of couching it and making it appealing to the citizenry, but the overall impact of those catchy terminologies on the living conditions of Ghanaians is negligible. Politicians should be consistent with their principles or standards.

“… Things started going wrong in Ghana two years ago, but the vice president decided not to address concerns raised by Ghanaians about the economy. Today, what has changed and is pushing the Vice President to call for a debate with Mahama?” Prince Obiri Yeboah asked.

    I know Ahmed Suale’s killer – A Plus

Independent parliamentary candidate for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, known as A Plus, has made a bold claim regarding the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Husein Suale. A Plus asserts that he knows who the perpetrators are and has expressed his willingness to provide evidence to support his allegation if required.

“Me, I know the person who killed Ahmed Suale. I swear to God… I swear by the children I have brought to this world, if you try me, you will conduct a press conference every day,” he stated during a Facebook live on Friday, July 13, 2024.

criticisingHis statement was directed at communicators of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), whom he warned against attacking him for criticising their running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

“I’ve said it; I know the person who killed Ahmed Suale. I know the person who allegedly killed Ahmed Suale, so focus on your campaign. If you like, go and call the police. I, Kwame A Plus, will go and write a statement, and they will make it public… from 2017, you’ve always known you can’t fight me. Can’t you just focus on your campaign and leave me?” he questioned.

A Plus emphasised that contrary to the beliefs of some NPP supporters, he has a good relationship with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

    About Suale’s murder

Ahmed Suale was assassinated in Madina on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, by two unidentified gunmen. The attackers shot him twice in the chest and once in the neck after forcibly entering his car.

Jadon Sancho returns to Man Utd after meeting with Erik ten Hag

Jadon Sancho has returned to Manchester United after a meeting with Erik ten Hag to discuss his future at the club.

Following a public disagreement with Ten Hag that led to his exile last season, Sancho is now back in training after resolving the issues with the Dutchman.

According to Sky Sports, their discussion focused on Sancho’s future, resulting in a mutual decision to move past their previous conflicts, potentially paving the way for Sancho’s inclusion in United’s squad for the upcoming season.

Sancho will not be part of United’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Rosenborg, but he will be available for selection afterward.

The Red Devils are set to face the Rangers on July 20.

During his productive loan spell back at Dortmund, Sancho scored three goals and provided three assists in 21 games across all competitions.

He has made 82 appearances for United, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists.

As United prepare for their match against Rosenborg, attention will soon shift to Ten Hag’s team selection. Seeing Sancho back in a red shirt would be a notable development.

CPP refuses to accept NAPO’s apology over claims it doesn’t bear his signature

Convention People’s Party has reacted to NPP running mate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s apology following comments made at his unveiling, which they consider denigrating the achievements of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The secretary to the Independent Committee of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Botsio, speaking on JoyNews, questioned the authenticity of the apology letter, which has since gone viral.

According to him, the apology statement released on the official X account of NAPO does not bear his signature, thus asserting that the letter may be fake, myjoyonline.com reports.

“However, this apology letter does not bear the signature or any other signature so to say we can respond adequately to it will be an exercise in futility.”

NAPO, at his unveiling, said, “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say that from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

In a statement issued on July 10, the CPP demanded NAPO’s immediate resignation from his roles as running mate and Energy Minister. The party also threatened to launch a nationwide protest if he did not resign honorably.

Subsequently, a letter claiming to be an apology from NAPO has surfaced.

His apology said, “My statement last Tuesday, 9th July, in Kumasi on the performance of President Akufo-Addo has elicited varied reactions. The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other Presidents we have had.

“I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor. I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologise sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” he apologised.

Minority vows to frustrate Parliamentary business over Majority’s absence for Bawumia’s campaign

Minority in Parliament is threatening to obstruct parliamentary business if the Majority’s attendance does not improve starting next week.

Since Parliament resumed in July, attendance from NPP MPs has been sparse, with rarely more than 30 present, leaving the Minority to shoulder the responsibility of conducting government business.

This situation follows the recent unveiling of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate by NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on the floor of the House, Deputy Minority Whip Ahmed Ibrahim criticised the NPP MPs for prioritising campaigning with Dr. Bawumia over their parliamentary duties.

Mr. Ibrahim warned that if the situation persists, the Minority will instruct their legislators to also focus on campaigning, potentially crippling the House’s functionality.

People still live in tents: Ablakwa ‘cries’ for dam spillage victims ahead of second spillage

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has issued a warning that another spillage of the Akosombo Dam without resettling the victims of the first spillage could be disastrous, as many are still living in tents.

Ablakwa has called for immediate action in anticipation of the upcoming spillage of the Akosombo Dam. He highlighted that some victims of the previous disaster remain in temporary shelters.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced plans for community engagement ahead of a controlled spillage. However, during the presentation of the business statement for next week in parliament, Ablakwa mentioned that the spillage is scheduled for August 1, according to his information from the VRA.

He also questioned why the parliamentary probe, initiated by Speaker Alban Bagbin, has not conducted any checks to inform the public about the impending spillage.

“Mr. Speaker, it is with a heavy heart that I remind you and this house that it has been 10 good months since the September 15 spillage, which unleashed untold devastation. More than 60,000 people were displaced; in my constituency, more than 12,000 were displaced. We filed a motion, and Mr. Speaker assured us that there would be a committee of inquiry so that, most importantly, we would learn lessons.

I am not too fixated on any sanction or punishment per se; that is not in our interest. Best practices all over the world: when disasters of such nature occur, they carry out a probe so that it will lead to institutional reforms so that there will be far-reaching recommendations so that lessons can be learned and it will be avoided.

“As we speak, there are people still living in tents. If you go to Mepe Degomey Camp 1 or Mepe Degomey Camp 2, there are hundreds of our fellow citizens still living in tents. So those living in tents who lost their properties, Mr. Speaker, how do you think they see us if they hear there’s going to be spillage soon?

Indeed, my follow-ups show that the spillage is going to occur as soon as August 1. That is what I am picking up from my usual deep-throat, impeccable sources.”

Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, the MP for Oforikrom, called for the sector minister to appear before parliament regarding the recent developments. His demand found support from Patrick Yaw Boamah, MP for Okaikwei Central.

Ampem Nyarko, MP for Asuogyaman, who had already filed an urgent question on the issue, urged the Speaker to summon the ministry.

In response, Deputy Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh announced that parliament would conduct a closed-door session with the Ministry for Energy on the matter.

Severe flooding in the Lower Volta area of Ghana resulted from heavy downpours, marking the region’s worst flooding on record.

The flooding was triggered by a deliberate release of water from the Akosombo Dam, displacing over 26,000 people. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.

The last documented spillage from the dam occurred in 2010. The Volta River Authority, responsible for managing the dam, opened its floodgates to alleviate pressure caused by unusually high rainfall.

By September, the Volta Lake, a vast reservoir stretching 400 km behind the dam, reached full capacity. Communities along the Volta River suffered extensive damage due to the overflow, with residents evacuating to safety, leaving behind their homes and belongings.

Agricultural lands were submerged, resulting in substantial crop losses, while businesses in low-lying areas also endured significant damage.

  • Rock City withdraws purchase bid, citing too much “negativity” surrounding transaction

Rock City withdraws purchase bid, citing too much “negativity” surrounding transaction

Leading hospitality firm Rock City has withdrawn its bid to purchase 60% of shares in four SSNIT-owned hotels, citing the “undue negativity” surrounding the transaction.

In a letter addressed to the SSNIT Director General dated July 12, Rock City said it took note of ongoing media discussions and a perceived lack of stakeholder engagement, which has created the perception that “we don’t want to be associated with our brand.”

“Such negativity is not only injurious to our brand but also jeopardises the success of the investment we intend to make in these hotels,” the statement reads in part.

Rock City had emerged as the preferred bidder after a competitive process involving 15 other organisations.

However, organised labour unions have fiercely rejected the sale, calling it “flawed” and “not in the interest of Ghanaian workers.”

This prompted threats of an indefinite nationwide strike on July 15.

  • You’ve got to control them – Man City’s Rodri warns Spanish teammates ahead of England clash

Spain talisman Rodri has called on his teammates to “control” one key England player in the Euro 2024 final this Sunday. Rodri and his Spanish side defeated France in the semi-final to secure their spot in the final against England, who triumphed over the Netherlands.

The Manchester City midfielder has been instrumental in Spain’s quest for the trophy, but he is particularly wary of the threat posed by Phil Foden, his club teammate at Etihad Stadium.

Foden has had a mixed tournament but delivered a standout performance in the semi-final, hitting the post and skillfully navigating pockets of space. He was substituted late in the game, just before Ollie Watkins scored the decisive winner. Despite Foden’s inconsistencies, Rodri believes he has the ability to cause problems for Spain.

When asked which England player he would prefer not to come up against, Rodri replied: “They have a lot of them. I love Phil Foden because I know him, he’s with me,” per AS.

“He’s a player who has to be kept under control because he has an innate ability to move in a small space. But there are many players who can do a lot of damage.

“I don’t like to focus on one player. I like to take a complete picture of England. And we go with our weapons, one on one.”

Rodri will also come up against John Stones and Kyle Walker and added: “I know them well, I know the culture of English football perfectly. They have a very talented team, players who can unbalance and who can control all aspects of the game.

“They defend well, they can attack you, and they are good at set pieces. We have to work on how to hurt them. We have our weapons, and we are confident that we can beat them.”

England have reached their second successive European Championship final and will aim to end 58 years of hurt for the men’s side on Sunday. Spain last won the competition in 2012.

Jonny Evans has secured a new one-year contract with Manchester United. The club announced that Evans, who emerged as an unexpectedly vital player last season, will remain at Old Trafford for another year.

The 36-year-old Northern Ireland international returned to United last summer as a temporary solution but went on to play 30 games across all competitions.

Despite the team’s injury troubles, Evans demonstrated exemplary professionalism throughout his first season back at the club, which he had originally left in 2015. His contributions helped United secure the FA Cup, completing his collection of every domestic trophy available with the club.

Evans told the club’s official website: “I am delighted to have extended my contract at Manchester United for another season.

“To play for this great club and feel the support from our incredible fans is always a privilege.
“Returning to the club last season was an honour, representing the team on the pitch alongside fantastic team-mates under an excellent manager.

Man City’s ‘sidelined’ Sergio sends message to Pep as he moves to Real Sociedad

Sergio Gomez expressed gratitude to Pep Guardiola upon departing Manchester City for Real Sociedad.

Gomez joined Manchester City in the summer of 2022 and initially made an impactful start to the 2022–23 season, often substituting for Joao Cancelo.

However, as the season progressed, his role in the squad diminished due to injuries, leading to his departure from Guardiola’s plans. With just six Premier League appearances last season, the Spaniard has now moved on to join Imanol Alguacil’s team.

    Real Sociedad secured Gomez’s services for €10 million (£8.3m/$10.9m) with a 30% sell-on clause.

The 23-year-old, a product of La Masia, accumulated 38 appearances for the eight-time Premier League champions, contributing to three consecutive league titles and a Champions League victory.

Gomez also expressed admiration for Guardiola upon his exit from the club.

Speaking to the media, Gomez said, per BBC Sport: “Being part of such a talented, ambitious and successful squad was a true honour and winning a host of major trophies, including the Treble, is something I will never forget and will always look back fondly on.

“I am excited for this new adventure but I wish Pep Guardiola and the players every success in the future.”
He will now join Alguacil’s side for pre-season and will hope to make his official debut for the club against Rayo Vallecano in the La Liga opener.

  • Ten Hag labels new assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy as “a man of character”

Ten Hag labels new assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy as “a man of character”

Erik ten Hag is optimistic that Ruud van Nistelrooy will bring a touch of “Manchester United DNA” back to Old Trafford in his return as an assistant coach.

Van Nistelrooy’s comeback is part of a broader restructuring aimed at propelling the club forward in the coming seasons. Alongside Van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag has appointed Rene Hake to the coaching staff.

Both have signed two-year contracts, replacing Benni McCarthy and Mitchell van der Gaag. This marks Van Nistelrooy’s return to Old Trafford after 18 years, while Hake joins from his previous role at Go Ahead Eagles.

Van Nistelrooy’s coaching career has been characterized by steady progression. After retiring from professional play in 2012, he transitioned to coaching in 2013. His journey included stints with PSV Eindhoven’s Under-19 and Under-21 teams, culminating in success with the first team by winning the KNVB Cup in 2023.

Despite interest from other clubs such as Burnley and Leicester City, Van Nistelrooy opted to join Ten Hag at United, underscoring his dedication to the club where he made his mark as a player.

Ten Hag has expressed full confidence in Van Nistelrooy’s coaching acumen and personal qualities.

“First of all, his character has brought him so far and it’s an example for everyone here in the building,” Ten Hag said.

“Of course, he will also bring some DNA of Manchester United in, but that character is such a strong driver and that is also what he shows as a coach. He has such a highly interesting profile, he’s so ambitious, he has the skills and he already has a lot of experience.

“He’s assisted the Dutch squad, in PSV he did the Under-19s as a manager, he did the Under-21s, Jong PSV, who were playing at the second level and then he was manager of the first team. So much experience, but very young, very ambitious, and very driven. With his skills and his intelligence, he will help all the players and the team.”

Meanwhile, Hake’s addition also highlights his extensive professional bond with Ten Hag, forged nearly two decades ago during their tenure at Twente. Hake’s recent accomplishments with Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie further underscore his qualifications.

His deep understanding of Ten Hag’s methodologies and principles is poised to facilitate the seamless integration of fresh tactics at United.

These new appointments promise an exciting season ahead for Manchester United supporters. Ten Hag’s initiative to revitalize the coaching staff aims to usher in a new era of triumph at Old Trafford.

The return of an esteemed figure like Van Nistelrooy not only evokes nostalgia but also strategically aims to motivate and propel the current squad toward greater heights.

My “fantastic balance” – Southgate’s emotional tribute to long-time assistant Steve Holland

Gareth Southgate delivered a heartfelt tribute to his longtime assistant, Steve Holland, on the eve of the Euro 2024 final against Spain.

Their professional relationship began when Southgate encountered Holland during his time in youth development at the FA, while Holland served as an assistant to André Villas-Boas at Chelsea.

Impressed by Holland’s methods and innovation, Southgate invited him to join as assistant coach for the England U-21 team in 2013, allowing him to continue his role at Chelsea, thus marking the beginning of their enduring partnership.

Together with the England senior team, they have achieved notable milestones, including two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final.

Despite their shared football philosophies, they bring distinct styles and personalities to their roles: Holland tends to be more vocal with players, while Southgate adopts a more measured approach.

This combination has proven effective in motivating players to perform at their best.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oo8UK4voL4

“Firstly, I could not do it without him,” Southgate told reporters. “He is a fantastic balance for me. His strengths eat up my weaknesses. He is so meticulous in his preparation.

“We have grown so close. The trust between us is immense and I could not have anybody better alongside me. He has won the Champions League, he has won the Premier League, everything.

He is a proud Englishman like me and there is one medal missing. We have brilliant staff right across the board but clearly, our relationship is really, really strong.”

On Sunday, Southgate and Holland aim for European championship glory, relying on their combined strengths and strategic insights to guide the Three Lions to victory over Spain in Berlin.

Their previous disappointment at Wembley three years ago surely offered valuable lessons, which they now intend to leverage against Luis De La Fuente’s side.

Cole Palmer beats Raheem Sterling, Reece James in latest Fantasy Premier League value at £10.5

Cole Palmer has achieved the largest price surge in Fantasy Premier League history following his standout season with Chelsea.

After moving from Manchester City to Chelsea last summer for an initial £40 million ($52m), Palmer’s Fantasy Premier League value started at £5 million. Following a stellar season where he accumulated 244 points, his price has soared to £10.5 million.

Chelsea’s decision to invest heavily in Palmer raised many eyebrows, given his modest record of six goals in 41 games for Manchester City.

However, the 22-year-old blossomed into a key player for the Blues, impressively netting 25 goals and providing 15 assists during the 2023–24 season.

His stellar performances have now extended to the international stage, where he is making waves for England at the Euros, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Before Palmer’s remarkable price surge in the Fantasy Premier League, Mohamed Salah of Liverpool had previously held the record, seeing his value rise from £9m to £13m for the 2018–19 season.

Looking ahead to the 2024–25 campaign, Erling Haaland claims the title of the game’s most expensive player, commanding a hefty £15 million valuation.

Palmer’s impact on the field continues to grow, as exemplified by his crucial assist off the bench in England’s 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semi-final.

As anticipation builds for the Euros final against Spain in Berlin on Sunday night, virtual managers eagerly await the reopening of FPL to assemble their squads for the upcoming season.

  • Biden under growing pressure as opposition remain unswayed by news conference

Biden under growing pressure as opposition remain unswayed by news conference

Joe Biden’s recent press conference, where he reaffirmed his intention to continue his presidential campaign, has failed to quell dissent within his own party. Three Democratic leaders have now joined others in urging Biden to withdraw from the race.

Calls for the 81-year-old to step aside have intensified since his uneven performance in a televised debate against Republican Donald Trump last month.

During a lengthy briefing on Thursday night, Biden appeared more composed and articulate, but there were notable slip-ups. In one instance, he mistakenly referred to his vice president, Kamala Harris, as “Vice President Trump,” and earlier in the day at a NATO event, he initially referred to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin” before correcting himself.

Despite his efforts, doubts persist about Biden’s candidature, compounded by potential defections in the coming days. Several donors, including actor George Clooney, have withdrawn their financial support, questioning his competence for another term.

A Democratic fundraiser, speaking to the BBC, acknowledged Biden’s adequate performance at the conference but noted it wasn’t enough to sway sceptics within the party.

Looking ahead, Biden faces relentless scrutiny at every public appearance. Any misstep is seized upon as evidence of his alleged inadequacy to run for re-election. Shortly after the press conference, Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes praised Biden’s public service record but urged him to step aside from the campaign.

The strongest candidate to confront the “threat” posed by Trump, he wrote, was no longer Joe Biden.
Illinois congressman Eric Sorensen also posted on social media that Mr Biden ran in 2020 “with the purpose of putting country over party. Today I am asking him to do that again”.

California congressman Scott Peters was the third to speak out, saying the “stakes are high, and we are losing course”.
They bring the tally of Democratic politicians calling on Mr Biden to go to 19.

During the briefing, Biden insisted to reporters that he’s in the race to “complete the job”.

“If I slow down and can’t get the job done, that’s a sign I shouldn’t be doing it,” he said. “But there’s no indication of that yet.”
Many of his supporters in Congress came out immediately after the news conference to echo his belief that he is the best candidate.
“We’ve got to stop the nitpicking and then focus on the work ahead. This guy has done it, he’s done it in the past,” said Democratic National Committee chairman Jaime Harrison.

US allies have voiced their support for President Biden. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Biden’s demeanour during their recent summit meeting, describing him as “very impressive.” French President Emmanuel Macron characterised Biden’s errors as minor slips of the tongue, emphasizing Biden’s command of issues.

Meanwhile, former President Trump took a jab at Biden over his Kamala Harris gaffe, sarcastically commenting, “Great job, Joe!” on Truth Social.

Flashback: Aside your quick temper, you’ve not changed – Kwami Sefa Kayi to Napo

A video has emerged featuring Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, during an interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show.

In the clip, the host posed a critical question to NAPO, asking whether politicians and government officials are aware that their tenure will eventually end and if they consider the implications of their decisions and actions while in office.

Kwame’s question stemmed from a story told by NAPO on how his pastor who visited him on a Friday to invite him fo a harvest service died late Sunday while resting from leading the church’s harvest service.

He advised the need to consider one’s ways life comes with so many uncertainties.

Consequently, Sefa Kayi inquired if holding power influences their personalities including NAPO or if they remain genuine and honest in all their dealings.

Citing his relationship with the host, he threw the question back at Sefa Kayi to give his opinion of his personality whether he has changed since assuming power.

In response, Kwame specifically addressed NAPO’s temper, mentioning that while NAPO has largely remained the same, his irritability and occasional sudden outbursts are notable exceptions.

“NAPO, apart from being easily irritated, you haven’t changed. Your temper is the only problem. Sometimes, out of the blue, you can just explode,” said Sefa Kayi.

Calls for a backdown: Defiant Biden fights on amid high-stakes gaffes

Joe Biden took to the stage with his presidency, re-election hopes, and political future hanging in the balance during a high-stakes news conference on Thursday night.

This session, lasting an hour, marked the conclusion of a NATO summit and was his first unscripted public appearance since a challenging debate with his opponent, Donald Trump. Biden’s earlier gaffe, where he mistakenly referred to Ukraine’s President Zelensky as “President Putin,” had already sparked concerns.

Throughout the conference, Biden, 81, faced persistent questions about his age and fitness to serve another term, concerns that were amplified by his debate performance. Despite these challenges and growing calls from several Democratic politicians and donors for him to withdraw from the presidential race, Biden remained composed.

He repeatedly dismissed worries about his campaign, asserting that his focus was not on his legacy but on completing the work he started when he assumed office in 2021.

“If I slow down and can’t get the job done, that’s a sign I shouldn’t be doing it,” he said. “But there’s no indication of that yet.”

From different perspectives, President Joe Biden’s Thursday night news conference at the NATO summit was seen either as a display of resolute determination or a sign of denial regarding his precarious political standing.

Despite the high stakes, Biden, 81, appeared unfazed by the pressure to step down, prompted by his earlier missteps, such as confusing Ukraine’s President Zelensky with “President Putin” and referring to Vice-President Kamala Harris as “Vice-President Trump.”

These gaffes added fuel to the calls from several Democratic politicians and donors for Biden to withdraw from the presidential race. The president, however, remained defiant, insisting that he is committed to completing his term and pushing his campaign forward.

He reassured the public of his capability to lead, despite continuous scrutiny over his age and cognitive abilities. Biden’s confident demeanor at the news conference, despite these stumbles, aimed to reassure his supporters and dispel doubts about his capacity to win another term and compete against his rival, Donald Trump.

The political landscape remains tense as more Democratic members of Congress join the call for Biden to step down, and his campaign must now grapple with whether this momentum will continue to build. Nonetheless, Biden maintains that the campaign is just beginning and expresses confidence in his ability to secure victory in the upcoming election.

The Democratic delegates who will officially back him as the party’s nominee at next month’s convention were free to change their minds as they pleased, he said, before mock whispering: “It’s not going to happen.”

He indicated that he might step aside if his staff provided data showing he couldn’t win, but current polls still suggest the race is very close. For example, an Ipsos survey released on Thursday showed Mr. Biden just one point behind his opponent, well within the margin of error.

Since the start of the year, support for both candidates has remained remarkably stable, despite the extraordinary controversies surrounding them.

However, polling alone won’t ease the anxiety among many Democratic officials, and the concerns hovering over Biden’s campaign are not easily dismissed. Reports suggest that more Democratic politicians are prepared to publicly break with the president, having waited until after the conclusion of the NATO summit to express their doubts.
