Further announcements regarding new appointments for the Management and Technical Teams will be made in due course.
The “Wonder Club” finished the 2023/2024 season with 44 points, leading to their relegation to the second tier for the first time since 2017.
Following their recent setback, the Board of Directors, under the leadership of Amarkai Amarteifio, has opted to overhaul the current leadership structure to rejuvenate the club.
Ghana’s captain, Andre Dede Ayew, showcased his goal-scoring prowess by netting twice in an exhilarating match featuring football stars such as Sulley Muntari, Afriyie Acquah, Gladson Awako, and Clifford Aboagye on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
Held at Nania Park within the University of Ghana, the game attracted numerous fans eager to see these renowned players in action.
Ayew’s team, donning black kits, included notable players like Sulley Muntari, Afriyie Acquah, Bernard Arthur, Michael Sarpong, and Benjamin Afutu.
The opposing team, clad in white, featured Clifford Aboagye, Benjamin Acheampong, Gladson Awako, and Aziz Tetteh among others.
Ayew initiated the scoring by deftly evading his marker, dribbling past both the goalkeeper and another defender, before confidently slotting the ball into the net.
Sulley Muntari’s aggressive play led to a crucial setup for a teammate, allowing the black team to extend their lead with a second goal.
After halftime, the white team narrowed the gap with a powerful shot from one of their rising stars.
Ayew then added his second goal of the match with a precise header during a scramble in the box. The white team responded with another strong strike, reducing the deficit once again.
Substitute Bernard Arthur, formerly of Hearts of Oak and Liberty Professionals, sealed the victory for the black team by lofting the ball over the goalkeeper for a fourth goal.
The white team managed to score once more, concluding the match with a thrilling 4-3 victory for Andre Ayew’s side.
The renowned retired footballer took the stage and captivated the audience with his vocal performance. He began with the popular song “Do The Dance,” a collaboration with the late musician Castro, and concluded with “African Girls.”
The crowd was visibly moved by Gyan’s melodies, enthusiastically joining in and cheering.
After his performance, Gyan expressed his gratitude to the attendees for their support and acknowledged that other artists were also lined up to perform.
“We appreciate everyone who came out. If I keep singing, the other artistes might outshine me, so I’ll end here,” Gyan humorously said in Twi, as captured in a video shared by blogger Kokoba on YouTube.
After Gyan’s performance, Ghanaian comedian Funny Face took the stage shirtless to entertain the crowd with his dance moves.
The highly anticipated All Regional Games, a project spearheaded by Gyan in collaboration with various sports authorities, commenced on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The event aims to sustain the excitement generated by the recent African Games hosted by Ghana.
During the launch, Asamoah Gyan highlighted that the All Regional Games are designed to provide a platform for talented Ghanaians to showcase their skills.
The event will feature competitions in nine different sports, including football, athletics, and esports.
The All Regional Games are expected to uphold the spirit of the African Games, giving emerging athletes and footballers in Ghana a chance to shine and continue the country’s sporting legacy.
Ampaw has often been at odds with Gyan on various matters, most notably the alleged rape of Sarah Kwablah.
Sarah Kwablah, a former University of Ghana student, accused Asamoah Gyan of rape and sodomy in 2015.
Additionally, Ampaw served as the lead counsel for Ghanaian journalist Osarfo Anthony in a malicious prosecution case.
These legal disputes persisted for six years until the court finally resolved them.
Ampaw explained that his involvement in issues related to Asamoah Gyan was not driven by personal animosity. Instead, he wanted to disprove Gyan’s dismissal of him as a mere social media lawyer.
“I don’t have any personal issue with Asamoah Gyan,” Ampaw stated.
“I just want to prove him wrong because he dared me. He was discrediting me, claiming I was just a social media lawyer and not among the top lawyers in Ghana.
“So I wanted to show him that I am indeed one of the top lawyers in the country,” Maurice Ampaw shared during an appearance on The Delay Show in July 2024.
Lawyer Ampaw emphasized that his legal battles with Asamoah Gyan played a significant role in establishing him as a high-profile lawyer, especially since many of his colleagues avoided taking on such controversial cases.
“The work I do in this country, no lawyer born of a woman can match it. I handle cases that others shy away from,” he stressed.
Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged that his administration will guarantee stipends for players in the Ghana Premier League.
In recent times, the absence of financial compensation for players in the Ghana Premier League has driven many to leave the domestic league for better-paying opportunities abroad.
Former President Mahama has vowed that the NDC will tackle this problem by offering stipends to players in the local league.
“I would also like to assure the sports community that we will improve our stadium infrastructure for track and field sports, upgrade our deteriorating pitches, and provide stipends to footballers in the Premier League,” he stated.
At the Media Encounter on Sunday, July 7, 2024, John Dramani Mahama expressed his views on the matter.
He stated, “We will give equal attention to what we consider to be the least-funded sports, just as we have done for soccer.”
The NDC first made this commitment in 2020, promising to provide Ghana Premier League players with a monthly salary of GH¢1,500.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has stated that the club has the funds to sign Spain and Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, who has impressed at Euro 2024 in Germany.
Williams, 21, renewed his contract with Athletic last year, which includes a release clause of approximately €58 million ($63m).
Despite currently exceeding their annual LaLiga spending limit and being unable to register new signings, Laporta remains optimistic that Barcelona will soon resolve their financial issues and be in a position to acquire players like Williams.
“Economically speaking, we could commit to the signing of Nico Williams,” Laporta told Catalunya Radio on Monday.
“Nico’s a player I like — I like him a lot. We are working with [new coach Hansi] Flick on possible signings. Now we have to leave [sporting director] Deco to close the operations we are working on.
“Shortly we will be able to announce some good news with regard to the financial [issues] and we will be back within LaLiga’s Fair Play limits. And that will allow further good news in terms of [signings].”
Barcelona is eyeing Nico Williams to bolster their attack, particularly after his standout performance at Euro 2024. Williams, 21, has seen his reputation soar as he played a pivotal role in Spain’s journey to the semifinals.
At the Euros, Williams set up the decisive goal against Italy, earning the MVP title for that match, and contributed a goal and an assist in Spain’s 4-1 victory over Georgia in the round of 16.
During his time in Germany, Williams, along with Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal and Pedri, has been frequently asked about the potential of joining Barça next season. Yamal and Pedri, both of whom have grown close to Williams while playing for Spain, have expressed their desire for him to join the Catalan club.
Williams, however, has maintained his focus on the Euros, stating his primary goal is to help Spain secure their fourth European Championship. The Athletic forward, who plays alongside his brother Iñaki Williams at the club, will next take the field for Spain on Tuesday in the semifinal against France in Munich.
Majority caucus in Parliament has defended the Chief Justice’s recommendation to increase the number of Justices on the Supreme Court bench, asserting that no illegality was committed.
In a press briefing at Parliament House on Monday, July 8, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s suggestion was justified given the overwhelming number of cases pending before the apex court.
“The Chief Justice has not done anything illegal, immoral nor unconstitutional in respect of her recommendation for the need to increase the number of justices at the Supreme Court,” he said.
In a letter addressed to the President, the Chief Justice recommended the appointment of Justices Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, Cyra Pamela Koranteng, Eric Kyei Baffour, Edward Amoako Asante, and Angelina Mensah Homiah, all currently serving on the Court of Appeal, to the Supreme Court bench.
She argued that this expansion would help the court manage the large number of pending cases.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking at Parliament House on Monday, July 8, stated that the Chief Justice’s proposal to increase the number of Supreme Court justices to 20 was aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of justice delivery.
He countered claims that the Chief Justice lacked the authority to make such a proposal, citing Article 125(4) of the Constitution, which grants the Chief Justice inherent powers as the head of the Judiciary to make such recommendations.
“The Chief Justice shall subject to this constitution, be head of the judiciary, and shall be responsible for the administration and supervision of the judiciary,” he quoted article 125 (5).
“When somebody is in charge of the management of a body, he is able to determine how to run the place efficiently and what will make the work of that institution to be properly done and to make proposals within the context of the law,” he said.
Touching on what the law says on the composition of the Supreme Court, Mr Afenyo-Markin quoted Article 128 (1) of the Constitution which provides that “The Supreme Court shall consist of the Chief Justice and not less than nine other Justices of the Supreme Court.”
He argued that the framers of the Constitution, in their wisdom, gave a minimum sealing in anticipation that there could be the possibility in the future to increase the number of Justices at the apex that.
“That is why they did not provide for upper sealing; so, if you read this and juxtapose against article 125 (4) clearly you cannot argue that any increase in the number of judges at the Supreme Court above 10 is unconstitutional or that the CJ is wrong in making such suggestion or proposal,” he said.
The Majority Leader addressed critiques surrounding the Chief Justice’s proposal, emphasizing that critics overlooked the detailed justification provided in her analysis. He clarified that the Chief Justice did not simply forward a proposal without substantiation but presented compelling arguments to support it.
Regarding consultations, he noted that the Ghana Bar Association and other stakeholders were consulted, with the Bar Association expressing agreement in principle to the proposal to expand the court.
On the timing of the appointment, Mr. Afenyo-Markin stressed that the Judiciary, entrusted with the constitutional duty to administer justice, operates independently of the country’s electoral schedule.
“The impression these critics try to create is that all that the Supreme Court does is to determine political cases but I can tell on authority that the political cases that go to the SC may not even be up to two per cent of the cases that they deal with.
“So, the narrow path taken by these critics to create the impression about the timing of the proposal is neither here nor there. In any event, to what use or benefit will it be to the President to pack the court or do last minute appointments,” he said.
Of all the current judges at the Supreme Court, the Leader said there were two justices – Justice Paul Baffoe Bonney and Justice Gabriel Pwamang – who were not appointed by the President.
“As astute politician as the President is known to be, I do not think that he will want to trigger a debate in the public domain to poison the atmosphere. He will not do that,” he said.
SSNIT Pension Scheme has accumulated a total of ₵6.8 billion in contributions, as reported in SSNIT’s operational summary for the year 2023.
Contribution collections for 2023, showed about a billion cedis jump from the ₵5.8 billion collected in 2022. In 2021, contributions stood at ₵4 billion while in 2020 SSNIT mobilized ₵5 billion.
The 2023 operations report showed that, private sector contributions stood at ₵4 billion as against a target of ₵3.5 billion. This represents 113.9 percent of its performance.
By December 2023, contributions from the public sector totaled ₵2.8 billion, falling short of the ₵4.8 billion target, achieving 66 percent of the expected contributions.
During the same period, SSNIT disbursed ₵5.4 billion in benefit payments, resulting in a surplus of ₵1.4 billion.
In 2022, total benefit payments amounted to ₵4.1 billion, while in 2021, it was ₵3.6 billion.
State of Membership
The figures indicated that active membership reached 1.9 million, demonstrating notable growth compared to previous years.
According Managers of the scheme, the company was able to retrieve ₵284 million in of arrears.
Sustaining the Performance
The company’s management has committed to adopting strategies aimed at enhancing the scheme’s growth. These initiatives include:
Promoting and educating stakeholders, including self-employed individuals, on the use of the Trust’s digital platforms for making contributions.
Partnering with the Office of the Director General to engage prominent employers or quasi-governmental organizations with outstanding debts to recover funds.
Increasing efforts to enroll new SEED members and ensuring timely payment processing.
SSNIT has justified its sale of a majority stake (60%) in four hotels to a private investor, citing it as the best strategy to rejuvenate the hotels’ financial prospects.
The properties involved are Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, and Ridge Royal Hotel.
During a press briefing in Accra, SSNIT’s Director General, Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, emphasized that after thorough evaluation, the decision to opt for privatization was driven by the hotels’ ongoing financial losses, making a change in management unfeasible.
“We’ve been through quite a lengthy process to do so. Bear in mind, we’ve also tried having external management companies running the SSNIT hotels and that hasn’t resolved the problem either.
“So, for us, we look at it twofold, that we are looking to resolve a problem and do so with the introduction of a strategic investor and we outlined the reasons there.”
“Consistent losses by almost all of our hotels. I know you are aware that Labadi doesn’t make a profit, but the returns are below [par]. They haven’t paid us any dividends with the exception of Labadi. Labadi Beach Resort only started paying dividends for the last 2 years. They haven’t from inception,” he stated.
Despite its profitability, Osafo-Maafo also defended the decision to include Labadi Beach Hotel in the sale. He explained that SSNIT aimed to maximize overall returns, citing the current profits from the hotel as insufficient.
“We want to maximize what we get out of it and the question that I asked somebody the other day is if you were selling your car or even your house, if you were selling your house, you’d make an attempt to actually paint it.
“You wouldn’t wait for your car to be put on stones and then say, now this is the time to sell it. You make it look good. There’s no reason why if a business is doing well and we seek to maximise capital from its to invest elsewhere, we shouldn’t do so.”
“The reason is simple. Returns are lower than we believe they should be, but also cash always has alternative uses. So why not? There’s a good investment rationale for that,” he stated.
The 22-year-old forward, sidelined from Euro 2024 due to a muscle injury, could be available for €35 million.
Brobbey has a history with Ajax, having left for RB Leipzig in 2021, but returned on loan just six months later after struggling in Germany.
Both Arsenal and Manchester United are confident that Brobbey’s added experience will translate to success in the Premier League.
The forward, who has two caps for the Netherlands, previously played under Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax and has expressed admiration for both English clubs.
In the 2022/2023 legal year, the Supreme Court completed only 344 of the 939 pending cases, resulting in a backlog of 595 cases carried over into the 2023/2024 legal year. This backlog increased by 181 cases from the previous year, which ended with 799 pending cases and 385 concluded, leaving 414 cases unresolved.
This data was outlined in a letter dated February 7, 2024, fromChief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornooto President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The Chief Justice requested increasing the number of Supreme Court Justices from 15 to 20 to better handle the growing number of cases and ensure effective justice delivery.
Justice Torkornoo recommended the appointment of Justices Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, Cyra Pamela Koranteng, Eric Kyei Baffour, Edward Amoako Asante, and Angelina Mensah Homiah, all from the Appeal Court, to the Supreme Court.
The Daily Graphic reported that the Chief Justice’s letter followed discussions with President Akufo-Addo and Speaker of Parliament Albert Sumana Kingsford Bagbin about the Supreme Court’s staffing challenges.
Following the Chief Justice’s letter, President Akufo-Addo, through his Executive Secretary Nana Bediatuo Asante, sought input from Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame and the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) on the proposal to appoint five additional justices.
Both the Attorney-General and GBA President Yaw Acheampong Boafo supported the Chief Justice’s proposal. The Attorney-General emphasized the need to address the growing backlog of cases but also advised the government to consider the financial implications of appointing new justices. The GBA agreed in principle but stressed that the proposal should be reviewed after consulting Parliament and the Council of State.
The Chief Justice’s proposal has faced criticism from some stakeholders, including accusations of attempting to pack the Supreme Court. The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) argued that the Chief Justice’s proposal was unconstitutional, claiming the 1992 Constitution does not empower the Chief Justice to nominate Supreme Court justices.
Data and analysis
The Chief Justice’s letter to the President included a detailed analysis and data from the past five legal years to justify the request for additional Supreme Court justices. This data covered the number of cases filed each year, the number of justices available, the backlog from previous years, the number of cases heard, and the challenges in forming different panels due to manpower shortages.
According to the data, the Supreme Court faced 761 cases in 2018/2019, 869 in 2019/2020, 906 in 2020/2021, 799 in 2021/2022, and 939 in 2022/2023. The court concluded 559 cases with 14 judges, 653 cases with 18 judges, 694 cases with 16 judges, 385 cases with 14 judges, and 344 cases with 12 judges in the respective years. This resulted in backlogs of 202, 216, 221, 414, and 595 cases.
The Supreme Court requires five justices to handle appeal cases or exercise supervisory jurisdiction and seven justices for constitutional interpretation and enforcement. For case reviews, the panels include two additional justices.
In her letter, Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo explained that the court currently operates three days a week, handling an average of 15 cases daily and about 180 cases monthly. This workload makes it impractical to form stand-alone panels to address the high volume of cases. Therefore, she requested an increase in the number of justices from 15 to 20 to manage the caseload effectively.
“With the current number of 15 Justices, including the Chief Justice and with recusals necessitated by the oft-occurring situation where judges of the Supreme Court either sat on a matter on appeal at the Court of Appeal, or presided over the trial of a case on appeal, it is practically impossible to create stand-alone in any given week,” the Chief Justice said in the letter. More justifications
Justice Torkornoo further told the President in the letter that the high volume of cases had compelled Justices of the court to sit on multiple panels to deal with the cases, but that due to the number, the court still ended up with a substantial backlog in the legal year.
Such a situation, she said, had also made it difficult for the judges at the apex court to find ample time in conducting or directing research.
“This compels Judges to take longer to work on decisions that satisfy them of the quality of research required for a court of its obligation as the final determiner of issues,” she said.
Again, the Chief Justice said the building of about 100 courts throughout the country since 2022 had also increased the workload on the Supreme Court. “The number of judges needs to be increased to meet the country’s justice needs,” she said. Number of justices
Article 128(1) of the 1992 Constitution stipulates that the Supreme Court should have no fewer than nine judges, excluding the Chief Justice, without setting an upper limit on the number of justices. There have been calls from the public to cap the number of Supreme Court justices at nine, similar to the U.S. Supreme Court.
However, these suggestions have been dismissed by notable figures, including former Chief Justices Sophia Akufo and Anin Yeboah, and former Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye. They argue that, unlike the U.S. Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of Ghana handles a wider array of cases, making a cap detrimental to justice delivery.
The Supreme Court of Ghana has extensive jurisdiction under the 1992 Constitution. It serves as the final appellate court for all civil and criminal matters, chieftaincy disputes, constitutional interpretation and enforcement, and has supervisory jurisdiction. It also handles presidential election petitions, decisions on state secret documents’ admissibility in court, and compensation for wrongful imprisonment.
Critics of the proposed cap point out that in other countries, the Court of Appeal often serves as the final appellate court, and courts like the U.S. Supreme Court can choose which cases to hear. They argue that capping the number of justices would hinder the Ghanaian Supreme Court’s ability to manage its broad jurisdiction effectively.
German referee, Felix Zwayer, previously embroiled in a match-fixing scandal, has been appointed to officiate England’s European Championship semi-final clash against the Netherlands on Wednesday.
Zwayer, 43, will lead an all-German officiating crew for the match.
Jude Bellingham, the England midfielder, had criticized Zwayer in 2021 when he played for Borussia Dortmund. Bellingham was fined 40,000 euros (£34,000) for referencing Zwayer’s prior suspension related to match-fixing allegations.
Zwayer had been banned for six months in 2005 after an investigation revealed he accepted a £250 bribe from fellow official Robert Hoyzer, who was subsequently banned from football for life.
Bellingham’s remarks came following Dortmund’s 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich, during which Zwayer opted not to award a penalty to Dortmund but did grant one to their opponents.
Bellingham, who was 18 at the time, told streaming service Viaplay: “You give a referee that has match fixed before the biggest game in Germany. What do you expect?”
In the last-16 match against Slovakia, he scored a crucial equalizer in the final minute of regulation time and later converted a penalty during the quarter-final shootout against Switzerland.
Additionally, Bellingham found the net in the group stage match against Serbia.
The Football Association has chosen not to comment on his performances.
The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has revealed pragmatic measures he would implement to salvage the Ghanaian economy should he be elected president.
During a media address on Sunday, July 7, Mahama outlined his vision for the various sectors that contribute immensely to the economy.
The 24-hour economy policy will increase the local production of goods for import-substitution, exports and create decent well-paying jobs for the youth.
My government willscrap COVID levy,E-levy, bet winnings levy and nuisance port levies to ameliorate the plight of suffering Ghanaians.
Free SHS has come to stay. No one can cancel it. I am coming to improve its implementation and make it better. I will support any bill intended to improve education in Ghana.
My government will invest $3 billion in ICT and partner with local tech start-ups and businesses to launch a ‘Digital Jobs initiative’ that will create at least 300,000 skilled employment opportunities for the youth in the digital space.
I will establish a National Women’s Development Bank that will be run by women to support one (1) million women-led and women-owned businesses.
I will roll out the One Million Coders Program that will train one million youth in coding and other IT programs for job creation.
I am a staunch Christian who has supported my local Assemblies of God church to build churches for God. But I don’t condone stealing in the name of God. I will conduct a forensic audit into the cathedral loot.
I will not allow any of my appointees to involve themselves in mining or illegal mining. Mining in forest reserves will be banned under my government.
No appointee of mine will be allowed to buy state assets.
I will prioritize fiscal discipline to restore investor confidence in the economy and pursue prudent measures that will boost cocoa and oil production so as to increase our forex earnings and stabilize the exchange rate.
I will fight corruption and ensure accountability on the part of government officials, whether they be NPP or NDC. I will not scrap the OSP. Neither will I be a corruption clearing agent.
I have been out of office for 7 years, 7 months. The NPP has not found any evidence of wrongdoing against me. Their lies against me to the effect that I own hotels in Dubai and that my government spent $10 million on presidential diaries have all been exposed. Don’t fall for the NPP’s lies.
My track-record in the fight against corruption is there for all to see. I prosecuted my own appointees, including my own friend and retrieved about GHS50 million for the state in the GYEEDA scandal.
I will run a lean government of not more than 60 ministers and cut down on government expenditure and waste.
I will create a safe and congenial atmosphere for the media and anti-corruption agencies to Work.
I will pursue justice for the families of the 8 Ghanaians who were murdered during the 2020 general elections and other victims of state-sponsored brutalities and punish the culprits.
I will modernize agriculture to boost food production in order to reduce food inflation and hardships. I will also prioritize agribusiness and agro-processing for import substitution and exports.
I have have been exorcised from the “father for all” syndrome.
We shall protect the votes of Ghanaians through vigilance.
Four (4) years is enough for me to reset Ghana, create a 24-hour economy, wage a serious fight against corruption and restore our nation back to the path of development and progress.
Kaziranga National Park in Assam is grappling with its severest inundation in recent memory.
The casualties, mostly drowned, encompassed 117 hog deer, two sambar deer, a rhesus macaque, and an otter. Back in 2017, over 350 animals succumbed to floods and vehicular accidents during migrations to higher terrain.
Meanwhile, more than two million residents have been displaced by this year’s deluge in Assam. Rescue efforts saved 97 animals, with 25 under medical care and 52 released after treatment.
Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage site, hosts the largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses globally, once on the brink of extinction in the early 2000s.
The park doubles as a tiger reserve and shelters elephants, wild water buffalo, and a diverse range of bird species. It’s also home to endangered South Asian dolphins inhabiting its meandering river systems.
Recently, a heartwarming incident occurred when an 18-month-old rhino sought refuge in a village house near the park, rescued later by the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation, as reported by the Press Trust of India.
Assam continues to grapple with devastating floods caused by heavy rains, pushing major rivers across the state beyond their perilous thresholds.
Torrential rains this year have submerged vast swathes of Kaziranga National Park and inundated thousands of villages, leading to tragic consequences with more than 60 fatalities and displacing over two million people.
The floods have caused extensive damage to roads, infrastructure, crops, and livestock across the region.
Kaziranga, renowned for its rich biodiversity, faces further threats as officials anticipate rising water levels in the Brahmaputra river in the days ahead.
To aid those affected, numerous relief camps have been established throughout Assam. These floods and landslides are recurring challenges during the monsoon season in northeastern India and neighboring regions.
Minister for Children and Integration, Roderic O’Gorman, has ascended to the leadership ofIreland’s Green Partyfollowing Eamon Ryan’s announcement of his resignation last month.
Ryan’s decision came in the aftermath of disappointing results for the Green Party in both local and European elections, where they lost their MEP seats and saw a reduction in the number of local councillors.
The current Irish coalition government, comprising Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, and the Green Party, has been in operation since June 2020.
Ryan’s departure marks the second leadership change within the coalition this year, following former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s resignation as Fine Gael leader in April.
Eamon Ryan announced last month that he was to step down as Green Party leader
The Green Party officially announced Mr. O’Gorman’s new leadership role during a press conference in Dublin on Monday morning. Outgoing leader Eamon Ryan described the event as a moment of transition to a new leadership era.
In a closely contested leadership contest, 1,896 out of a possible 3,425 party members participated in the voting process. Mr. O’Gorman secured 984 votes, narrowly surpassing Minister of State and Senator Pippa Hackett, who received 912 votes.
Effective immediately, Mr. O’Gorman will assume leadership from Mr. Ryan. Later today, he is scheduled to join Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tánaiste Micheál Martin at the coalition leaders’ regular pre-cabinet meeting.
Who is Roderic O’Gorman?
Mr. O’Gorman’s commitmentto the Green Partyspans over two decades. His political career took a significant turn in February 2020 when he secured a seat as a TD representing Dublin West. Upon the formation of the coalition government, he assumed the role of Minister responsible for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration, and Youth.
Before his parliamentary role, Mr. O’Gorman dedicated six years to Fingal County Council, serving the Castleknock LEA. His involvement in local issues included leading the Yes Equality initiative in Dublin West, advocating for marriage equality, and actively participating in the campaign to repeal the 8th Amendment.
Beyond politics, Mr. O’Gorman’s professional background includes a tenure as a law lecturer, underscoring his academic contributions and expertise in legal matters.
In a tragic escalation,Ukrainian capital Kyiv witnessed severe damage to a prominent children’s hospital from Russian airstrikes, resulting in at least 31 fatalities across the country during an early morning barrage.
The airstrikes, unusually occurring in daylight, claimed the lives of at least 17 individuals in Kyiv alone. Among the casualties were two individuals at the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital, the largest pediatric facility in Ukraine, which suffered extensive damage from the explosion.
In central Ukraine’s Kryvyi Rih, the head of the military administration reported a death toll of at least 10, while three more lost their lives in the eastern town of Pokrovsk and one in Dnipro.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, currently in Poland where he has signed a security pact, expressed a firm commitment to respond to the attacks.
“Different cities: Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk. More than 40 missiles of various types. Residential buildings, infrastructure and a children’s hospital were damaged,” Mr Zelensky wrote earlier on social media.
Lesia Lysytsia, a doctor at the children’s hospital, told the BBC the moment the missile struck was “like in a film” with a “big light, then an awful sound”.
This image shows the extent of the damage to the children’s hospital
“One part of the hospital was destroyed and there was a fire in another. It’s really very damaged – maybe 60-70% of the hospital,” she said.
Pictures from the scene showed young children – some with IV drips – sitting outside the hospital as it was evacuated. Dr Lysytsia said Ohmatdyt is a big hospital which carries out many functions, including cancer treatment and organ transplants.
“Now we are in the process of evacuating patients to the nearest hospital.. [but] many patients are intubated and on ventilators and cannot have contact with other patients or go outside,” she said.
Hospital staff informed Ukrainian television that approximately 20 children were receiving treatment in the ward that was struck.
Following the initial attack, another explosion shook the nearby vicinity, prompting hundreds of individuals to seek refuge in an underground passageway.
President Zelensky posted on social media, expressing concern that individuals were trapped beneath the debris of the hospital.
Vitaliy Klitschko, Kyiv’s mayor, told the Reuters news agency from the hospital that the bombardment was “one of the the worst attacks” on the capital since the start of the war.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported via social media that a maternity unit in Kyiv suffered partial destruction from falling debris, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to three others.
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina, as announced by the Women’s Tennis Association, will wear a black ribbon during her Wimbledon round of 16 match on Monday afternoon to honor the victims.
In another part of the country, Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of Kryvy Rih’s military administration, stated on Telegram that an attack on the city had claimed the lives of at least 10 people and left 31 others wounded, with 10 in critical condition.
Kryvy Rih, President Zelensky’s hometown, has faced repeated assaults from Russia since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Sergiy Lysak, head of the Dnipro region, reported one fatality and six injuries in Dnipro city, noting that a high-rise building and a business were among the targets hit.
In Pokrovsk, located in the eastern Donetsk region, three individuals lost their lives. Russian forces have recently seized control of several villages in this area.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Moscow for a two-day state visit, scheduled to meet President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Monday for talks.
This visit coincided with Russian airstrikes that Ukraine alleges targeted civilian infrastructure, though Russia claims they aimed at military sites.
West African leaders’ summit in Abuja, Nigeria, began following an alliance formed by the military rulers of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, who recently announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Hosted amid calls from several regional leaders for renewed dialogue with the coup-affected Sahel nations, the ECOWAS summit aims to address the implications of the new defence pact signed by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger during their recent summit in Niamey, Niger.
Last September, the three countries established the Alliance of Sahel States, allowing for cooperation in response to internal uprisings or external threats. The withdrawal of these nations from ECOWAS in January came after the bloc took a firm stance against their respective coups.
According to Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reporting from Abuja, the timing of Saturday’s announcement by the Sahel alliance was intended to demonstrate the autonomy and self-sufficiency of the three countries apart from the regional bloc.
“But some analysts say Mali and Niger in particular could face difficulties if all member countries of ECOWAS decide to isolate the two landlocked countries,” he said.
“Right now, the military leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger seem to have momentum on their side and they are scouting the global community for support. ECOWAS has a lot of work ahead before it can bring these three countries back into the fold, if at all they agree to do that.”
Speaking at the summit on Saturday, Niger’s General Abdourahamane Tchiani called the 50-year-old ECOWAS “a threat to our states”, adding that the three countries aim to create an alliance free of foreign influence for their people.
In February, ECOWAS opted to relax sanctions against Niger in hopes of fostering better relations, but efforts for reconciliation have seen limited success. The sanctions were initially imposed after a coup in July 2023 that brought Tchiani to power.
Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, a media aide to the Nigerian president, emphasized to Al Jazeera that despite the strained relations between ECOWAS and the Sahel alliance over the past year, there have been some incremental achievements.
“The handling of the fragile situations in these countries – even though perhaps not ideally what we would want – has helped to de-escalate tensions, but at one point, tensions were really high and things could have gone south,” he said.
As the Sahel region shifts towards allying with Russia, the United States is set to complete its withdrawal from a key base in Niger on Sunday, which it had built to combat armed groups that pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS).
About 1,000 US military personnel were set to withdraw from Niger’s Air Base 101.
Following the coups in West Africa, the breakaway countries have had increasingly strained relations with the West, condemning influence, particularly by former colonial ruler France. French troops left Mali completely in 2022, and they completed their withdrawal from Niger and Burkina Faso last year.
Impact on fighting armed groups
Amid the political and militaryshifts following the coups, the armed groups continue to pose a considerable danger to the whole region.
Kabir Adamu, a security consultant, told Al Jazeera that Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger will still need support from the rest of the region.
“If they decide to operate on their own or try to isolate other ECOWAS countries, or other countries within the Sahel, these [armed] groups will continue to exploit these gaps that will be created and of course, continue to impact a heavy toll on both the security forces and the citizens of the three countries.”
According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), which tracks violence in the region, more than 8,000 people were killed in Burkina Faso in 2023, and gains against armed groups largely backslid in Niger.
In Mali, it said, military forces were working with Russia’s Wagner mercenaries and had been involved in “indiscriminate killing” of civilians.
Ghana has confirmed its participation in the highly anticipated2024 Olympic Games 4×100 Men’s Relay event, according to an announcement by World Athletics.
The list of qualifying teams released by World Athletics includes Ghana among the four African nations set to compete. Joining Ghana from the continent are Nigeria, Liberia, and South Africa.
While Ghana’s men’s team secured qualification, the women’s team did not, with Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire representing Africa in the women’s event.
Ghana’s men’s relay team, composed of Isaac Botsio, Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, and Ibrahim Fuseini, secured their spot by winning their heat at the World Relays in the Bahamas, recording a time of 38.29 seconds.
Amoah and Azamati were part of Ghana’s team in the 2020 Olympics 4×100 Men’s Relay Final, alongside Sean Safo-Antwi and Emmanuel Yeboah, finishing seventh.
Hearts of Oak’s captain and defender,Kofi Agbesimah, has unexpectedly asked to terminate his contract despite having a year left on his initial two-year agreement.
The 27-year-old, who signed from Bechem United last summer, has pointed to undisclosed internal issues as the reason for his dissatisfaction.
Agbesimah’s decision follows a stellar season in which he played a vital role, appearing in 30 league matches and scoring one goal during the 2023/24 season.
His leadership and experience have been crucial to Hearts of Oak, and his potential exit would be a significant loss for the team.
Although the club has not officially responded to Agbesimah’s request or revealed the specific reasons behind it, it is believed to be related to internal matters.
Hearts of Oak now faces the challenge of possibly losing a key player who has been integral to their defensive setup and team cohesion.
Nuamah, who arrives from Belgian Pro League club Molenbeek, has inked a four-year contract that will keep him at Lyon until June 30, 2028.
Lyon invested €28.5 million to secure the speedy winger’s services, following his loan spell with them last season.
In a statement released on Sunday, the club praised Nuamah, describing him as a dynamic, fast, and impactful forward.
“A dynamic, fast, and impactful forward, Ernest Nuamah—who made his mark at Nordsjaelland in Denmark between January 2022 and August 2023 (49 matches / 20 goals)—has, through his performances, convinced his coach and club officials to extend his stay at OL.
“Possessing exceptional qualities and great potential for development, the 20-year-old Ghanaian international (11 caps) will resume training on Monday, July 8.”
Last season, Ernest Nuamah made 33 appearances for Lyon in Ligue 1 and the French Cup, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
Nuamah, who has 11 caps for Ghana, played a crucial role in the national team’s recent victories over Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Bayern Munich have officially signed Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, ending his three-year tenure at Selhurst Park. The German giants met the £45m release clause in his contract to secure the deal.
Olise had attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, but ultimately chose to join Bayern.
The Bavarian club is undergoing a significant first-team overhaul in an effort to reclaim the Bundesliga title, which Bayer Leverkusen took from them last season.
This marks the third consecutive summer Bayern has turned to the Premier League for high-profile signings, following the acquisitions of Sadio Mane from Liverpool in 2022 and Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023.
At Bayern, Olise will join an impressive roster of attacking talents, including Kane, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, and Kingsley Coman.
The club recently appointed Vincent Kompany as their new head coach after an extensive search to replace Thomas Tuchel, and they are now looking to strengthen other areas of the squad during the transfer window.
Crystal Palace now faces the challenge of retaining another key player, Eberechi Eze, who is currently with the England squad at Euro 2024.
Palace finished tenth in the Premier League last season, thanks largely to the contributions of Olise, Eze, and the in-form striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Ghana international Antoine Semenyohas secured a new long-term deal with Premier League club Bournemouth. The Black Stars forward will remain at the Vitality Stadium until the end of the 2028/29 season.
Semenyo, who joined the Cherries from Championship side Bristol City in the January 2023 transfer window, initially made 11 Premier League appearances, scoring once in his debut half-season.
In his first full season under manager Andoni Iraola, the 24-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign, making 36 appearances across all competitions. Semenyo netted eight league goals and provided two assists.

— #EurosOnMGL (@JoySportsGH) July 8, 2024 Following his impressive season in the 2023/24 season, Semenyo has now committed to a long-term deal at the club.
With the new contract, Bournemouth believe in the abilities of the Ghanaian forward ahead of theupcoming season.
Ghana’s Black Queens Coach, Nora Hauptle, has reaffirmed her commitment to her current position amid increasing interest from Zambia, who are seeking her appointment as their Head Coach.
Following a strong performance by the Black Queens in February, where they played to an exciting 3-3 draw against Zambia in their 2024 Olympic qualifier in Ndola, Zambian fans have expressed significant support for Hauptle to take over their national team.
Despite Ghana’s subsequent elimination from Olympic contention after a 1-0 loss in the first leg in Accra, Hauptle’s coaching abilities have been widely praised, particularly by Zambian supporters.
Speaking to the media ahead of Ghana’s upcoming friendly against Japan on 13 July, Hauptle expressed her appreciation for the interest but stressed her dedication to her current mission with the Black Queens.
“I’m the Ghana national team coach. Of course, it’s an honour when other countries are asking for me, but I know where I belong.
“I started a mission here. I have a fantastic squad. I have a very good human relationship with my players. So I’m committed here.
“The Mission Volta, the next step is to succeed at WAFCON. I’m willing to fulfil my job here.
“And besides that, it’s not on my mind. But of course, that means that we are not doing things wrongly when there are such demands around.”
The Black Queens are scheduled to leave for Japan on Sunday in preparation for their friendly match at the Kanazawa Go-Go Curry Stadium on 13 July 2024.
Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has told reporters he cannot promise a new stadium under the current economic crisis, as Ghana’s sports infrastructure remains in distress.
Ghana currently cannot boast a world class category A stadium, with the Confederation of African Football often forced to find compromises that allow the country’s football teams to honor continental matches at home.
In an interaction with journalists Sunday night, Mahama was asked how he intended to address that problem if voted into power in December’s General Elections.
“In the current crisis in which we are, I would not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium,” he said.
“But I’ve said that under the big push, we intend to spend a certain amount of money over five years on providing a good infrastructure to include roads, bridges, agro-industrial parks, and so on and so forth.
“That could include sports facilities. And if we make allocation, then we probably would look at providing such a stadium,” he concluded.
The Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium, both built for the 2023 African Games, are the only two facilities currently in good shape to host major multi-sports competitions.
Former Ghana Captain Asamoah Gyan has urged Ghanaians to temper their expectations for the Black Stars, despite the team’s recent impressive victories in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
After a winless streak throughout 2024, the Black Stars secured back-to-back wins against Mali and the Central African Republic in the June 2024 qualifiers for the Canada, Mexico, and USA tournament.
These victories have propelled Ghana to second place in Group I of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, with nine points, just behind Comoros on goal difference.
Demonstrating resilience, the Black Stars overturned a one-goal deficit to achieve a 2-1 victory over Mali in Bamako, and they came from behind at halftime to secure a thrilling 4-3 win against the Central African Republic in Kumasi.
However, Asamoah Gyan believes that Coach Otto Addo will need five years to build a team capable of competing for trophies.
“Ghanaians should limit their expectations of the Black Stars,” the Ghana all-time top scorer told Kumasi-based Pure FM.
“The players are young, we should allow the coach to build the team, let’s say five years to develop the team. After that, then we can expect them to win trophies.”
Suspended Assin Central Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region, Sadique Broni Yeboah, has issued an ultimatum to the party.
He demands that his suspension be reversed within three days. If the party fails to comply, Yeboah intends to pursue legal action against the NDC.
The suspension of Yeboah, along with the Assin Central Regional Chairman, Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, stemmed from their involvement in the suspension of the constituency’s parliamentary candidate, Nurein Shiabu Migyimah.
Yeboah has emphasized his commitment to seeking legal recourse should the party not lift his suspension within the stipulated timeframe.
The national leadership of the NDC intervened in the dispute, declaring the suspension of Nurein Shiabu Migyimah null and void. This decision followed a letter dated July 3, sent by Yeboah’s legal representatives to the General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey.
The letter demanded that the NDC rescind Yeboah’s suspension, asserting procedural irregularities and alleging a breach of natural justice.
According to Yeboah’s lawyers, the suspension violates the party’s constitution and internal regulations, warranting immediate reconsideration by the NDC leadership.
“We have the instructions of our client to demand from you the withdrawal of his suspension forthwith within 3 days and give him a fair hearing if you find it meets so to do.”
“Be informed that we have received strict and unqualified instructions from our client to take legal action against you in the event that you default in that regard,” portions of the letter said.
Nurein Shiabu Migyimah faced suspension from his role as theParliamentary Candidate forhis party, based on allegations related to immoral conduct and activities deemed detrimental to the party’s interests.
Additionally, accusations surfaced claiming that Migyimah was involved in a scandal where he allegedly impregnated the wife of Sadique Broni Yeboah.
New Patriotic Party (NPP)has finalized plans to conduct a parliamentary primary election in the Manhyia South constituency following the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the party’s running mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
According to a statement released by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, nominations will commence on Monday, July 8, 2024, and will close the following day, Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

“An aspiring parliamentary candidate (APC) shall procure nominations forms after the payment of a non-refundable applicating fee of GH 3000 in bankers draft in favour of the NPP national headquarters, Accra.”
“To successfully file the nomination, an APC shall pay a non-refundable filing fee of gh35,000 in bankers draft in favour of the NPP, Headquarters, Accra,” he stated.
Mr Kodua however indicated that women, youth and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will receive a 50% rebate o the filing fees. “This means they will be required to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GH17,500. To ensure clarity, we define a youth as an individual between the ages of 18 and 40,” he added.
TheNPP General Secretary further noted that no individual shall be denied access to purchase nomination forms.
Head of Public Affairs for theWest African Examination Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has issued a stern warning to BECE candidates about attempting to bribe invigilators by placing money and contact information in their answer booklets.
Speaking at a press conference to outline the 2024 BECE rules and regulations, Mr. Kapi highlighted a troubling trend where candidates seek external assistance during exams.
He emphasized that such actions are serious offences and assured that those caught will face strict consequences.
“The council has noted with concern a number of cases where candidates write telephone numbers or phrases such as ‘call me,’ ‘help me,’ or ‘just call my mom,’ etc. in their answer booklets.
Others also insert various sums of money in their answer booklets soliciting help from examiners.
“We wish to state clearly that this is classified as seeking external assistance and is a punishable offence,” he added.
Mr. Kapi also issued a warning against the use of mobile phones and other electronic communication devices by candidates in the exam halls.
He stated that candidates caught committing such offences will have their entire exams cancelled.
He urged parents to ensure their children comply with these directives to avoid the risk of having their results invalidated.
“Mobile phones and other electronic communication devices are prohibited at examination centres.
Neither supervisors, invigilators nor candidates are permitted to bring mobile phones into examination halls,” he stressed.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumiahas announced that plans are well underway to procure and import 100 electric buses into Ghana by the end of the year.
This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and address rising transportation costs as part of the country’s efforts to combat climate change.
During a meeting with members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the introduction of these electric buses will be implemented through a public-private partnership.
He also mentioned that the government will construct charging stations at various fueling stations to support the new fleet of buses once they arrive in the country.
“One of the issues we are looking at as far as reducing the cost of transport in Ghana is that we go through two things: we should move towards electric vehicles, which will help the environment.
Also, with electric vehicles, two elements will help all of us: It doesn’t consume fuel.
“So, when the price of fuel increases, it will not impact the price of electric vehicles. Again, there are not many spare parts in electric vehicles; the main spare part that will be needed will be the battery, which can last for years. It will reduce the transport cost.
“Beginning this month, we are commencing the construction of charging stations because electric vehicles will need charging stations where you can charge your car.We want to place the charging stations in virtually every station’s fueling stations.
“We want Ghana to move towards solar power. So, the charging stations will be hybrid, both solar and electricity, but we want to move towards this by election. This year, we are hoping to bring in close to 100 electric buses to show the public how it is working,” he stated.
Manchester City and Manchester Unitedhave received the green light to participate in European competitions next season, as confirmed by UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB).
Concerns had surfaced regarding Manchester City’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League, alongside LaLiga’s Girona, both of which are owned by the City Football Group.
Concurrently, Manchester United secured a spot in the Europa League by winning the FA Cup, while Nice, a Ligue 1 team owned by Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group, also qualified.
The involvement of two clubs under the same ownership in one European competition posed a potential conflict with UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations. Consequently, adjustments had to be implemented at the board level of all four clubs to ensure their eligibility.
UEFA confirmed on Friday that there had been “significant changes made to the ownership, governance, and financial support of the concerned clubs” which would “substantially restrict the investors’ influence and decision-making power.”
The shares held in Girona and Nice have been transferred to independent trustees “through a blind trust structure established under the supervision of the CFCB.”
The arrangement is limited to the current 2024-25 season, after which ownership shares will revert to City Football Group and INEOS.
Ratcliffe obtained a 27.7% stake in United in February, while INEOS, the chemical company he established and currently leads as CEO, acquired Nice in 2019.
According to a source familiar with the matter, UEFA has already intervened to prevent United from pursuing the signing of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.
“They’ve said we can sell him to another Premiership club,” Ratcliffe said in an interview last month.
“But we can’t sell to Manchester United. But that’s not fair on the player and I don’t see what that achieves.”
UEFA announced on Friday that Manchester United and Manchester City have mutually agreed to a transfer embargo with their affiliated clubs, Nice and Girona, respectively, until September 2025.
This agreement effectively prevents any player transfers between these clubs during the upcoming summer transfer window in 2025.
Despite this restriction, sources informed ESPN that Manchester City are likely to finalize the signing of Sávio during this summer. The winger, previously on loan at Girona, will join City from Troyes, his parent club, which did not qualify for the Champions League.
Accra High Court’s ruling on Friday, July 5, denied Fidelity Bank’s request to dismiss allegations inBright Simons’ defense related to procurement irregularities in their ongoing defamation case.
The court’s decision allows Simons to continue with his counter-claim against the bank in their legal dispute.
The conflict arose when Bright Simons echoed claims by energy expert Benjamin Boakye on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), suggesting improprieties in forex transactions between Fidelity Bank and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In response, Fidelity Bank filed a defamation lawsuit against Simons.
In a surprising twist, Simons not only defended his statements but also countersued Fidelity Bank, arguing that the transactions in question breached the Public Procurement Act and other national policies.
He contended that Fidelity Bank should not profit from such transactions, particularly given the alleged conflicts of interest involving a senior bank executive who sits on ECG’s board and holds political influence.
Fidelity Bank attempted to have these procurement-related allegations excluded from the case, arguing they were criminal matters unsuitable for a civil defamation trial.
However, the presiding Judge disagreed with Fidelity’s argument, citing legal precedents supporting Simons’ right to raise these issues in his defense and pursue a public interest lawsuit.
The Judge referenced several legal cases to support her decision, affirming that Simons’ approach and his counter-claim against Fidelity Bank were legally sound. As a result of rejecting Fidelity’s application, she ordered the bank to pay costs totaling GHS 3,000.
AudreyGrey Legal, Tax, and Professional Services Firm in Accra represent Bright Simons, while Fidelity Bank is represented by the chambers of Dominic Ayine, the NDC MP for Bolgatanga East.
While the Judge did not issue further directives, the ruling sets the stage for a complex legal battle between Fidelity Bank and Bright Simons, with both parties preparing for the next phase of litigation.
Background
Fidelity Bank initiated alawsuit against Bright Simons of IMANI Africa on March 25, 2024, following a tweet where he alleged that the bank conducted a dubious foreign exchange transaction with ECG, potentially resulting in financial losses.
Represented by Dominic Ayine, the NDC MP for Bolgatanga East, Fidelity Bank claimed in its amended suit that Simons’ tweet contained false and misleading information, fabricated to tarnish the bank’s reputation.
Simons, who entered his appearance on March 28, 2024, and is represented by the corporate law firm Audrey Grey in Accra, staunchly defended his statements.
He argued that the figures cited in his tweet, as well as those from Benjamin Boakye’s tweet, were sourced from financial documents provided by ECG’s own financial department to the Cash Waterfall Mechanism committee at the PURC.
In a preliminary hearing on May 20, 2024, Simons refuted all allegations made by Fidelity Bank, maintaining that his statements were based on credible sources and were not intended to defame the bank.
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban visited Moscow for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putinregarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The trip has sparked condemnation from European Union leaders, who have underscored that Orban’s actions do not represent the unified stance of the bloc. Among EU national leaders, Orban remains distinct as the only one maintaining significant ties with the Kremlin since Russia’s extensive invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
He described the trip as a “peace mission” in a post on X. It comes days after he visited Kyiv, where he spent three hours with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday.
Both legs of the trip were carefully choreographed to emphasise Mr Orban as a global statesman, rather than an outsider. Hungary has just taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union, and will hold it to the end of the year. Viktor Orban, speaking in Moscow, said: “Hungary will slowly become the last European country that can talk to everyone.”
The Kremlin said on Friday that talks between the two leaders would last at least two or three hours, but could go on “as long as needed”.
Officials are accompanying them, but there is a possibility they could speak one to one. In footage of the meeting, Mr Putin said Mr Orban was visiting “not just as a long-time partner” but as a European Union representative.
However, European leaders openly condemned the Moscow trip and emphasised he was not representing the EU. “The EU rotating presidency has no mandate to engage with Russia on behalf of the EU,” Charles Michel, President of the European Council, wrote on X.
“The European Council is clear: Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is the victim. No discussions about Ukraine can take place without Ukraine.” “Appeasement will not stop Putin,” European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X.
Who is Viktor Orban, Hungarian PM with 14-year grip on power?
Russian President Vladimir Putin extended an invitation to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to discuss his recent proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine. Orban’s plan includes talks on the condition that Ukraine withdraws from four regions claimed by Russia, which encompass territory currently outside Russian control.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently maintained that Ukraine will not engage in negotiations with Moscow until all Russian forces withdraw from Ukrainian soil, including Crimea. The Kremlin has set forth stringent conditions for talks, which Kyiv and its Western allies view as tantamount to Ukraine surrendering.
Earlier this week, Viktor Orban visited Kyiv, suggesting that a swift ceasefire could expedite peace negotiations.
President Zelensky, who has had strained relations with Orban, did not publicly respond to the proposal. Before Ukraine’s offensive last summer, Orban had warned that Ukraine faced significant challenges in any military confrontation. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Orban has highlighted Russia’s substantial military resources and manpower, indicating a formidable advantage.
Despite these developments, many Ukrainians fear that agreeing to a ceasefire could entrench Russia’s grip over seized territories. They insist that any negotiations should be conducted from a position of strength, rather than under duress.
Orban’s stance on Western aid to Ukraine has been critical, as evidenced by his prior efforts to delay a €50 billion EU assistance package aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense against Russia.
His visit to Kyiv this week was his first in 12 years, in stark contrast to his frequent meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin during that period.
During a joint appearance with President Zelensky, the atmosphere was noticeably formal, with both leaders refraining from taking questions from the media after delivering their statements.
However, Orban’s recent appointment as head of the Council of the European Union positions him as a significant European leader for the next six months.
In his inaugural days in this role, Orban emphasized the importance of resolving past conflicts and focusing on a constructive path forward.
President Joe Biden isunder scrutiny from key Democratic supporters amidst a pivotal phase in his re-election campaign. Some prominent donors are voicing concerns publicly, indicating they may withhold financial support unless the party considers replacing Biden as its candidate.
This comes after a challenging debate performance last week, which has intensified calls for Biden, aged 81, to consider stepping aside.
As he prepares for crucial events including a primetime TV interview and a rally in Wisconsin on Friday, Biden faces mounting pressure to address doubts about his candidacy raised by instances of faltering during the debate.
While he admitted that he “screwed up” that night, he has vowed to stay on as his party’s standard-bearer taking on Donald Trump in the November presidential election.
Scrutiny on his public appearances has markedly increased since the debate.
In a White House speech to military families on Thursday to mark 4 July Independence Day, he stumbled over his words when referring to Trump as “one of our colleagues, the former president”.
And in an interview with WURD radio in Philadelphia, he lost his thread and appeared to say he was proud to be the first black woman to serve with a black president.
Donors have been weighing their options. Abigail Disney, an heiress to the Disney family fortune, told business news channel CNBC that she did not believe Mr Biden could win against Trump.
She said her intent to pull support was rooted in “realism, not disrespect”. “Biden is a good man and has served his country admirably, but the stakes are far too high.” The consequences of defeat in November “will be genuinely dire”, she added.
She joined a select group of wealthy donors who are actively voicing their concerns. Philanthropist Gideon Stein recently disclosed to the New York Times that his family has opted to withhold $3.5 million from various nonprofit and political entities engaged in the presidential campaign unless there is a change in Mr. Biden’s candidacy.
Meanwhile, Hollywood producer Damon Lindelof, known for his substantial donations to Democratic causes this election cycle, penned an impassioned essay in Deadline. In it, he called on fellow donors to join him in pausing their financial contributions until there is a shift in leadership.
Adding to the chorus, Hollywood agent Ari Emanuel, sibling to Barack Obama’s former chief of staff, emphasized during a recent conference in Colorado the strategic importance of withholding financial support to compelMr. Biden’s exit from the race, according to a report in the Financial Times published on Thursday.
“The lifeblood to a campaign is money, and maybe the only way . . . is if the money starts drying up,” he said, according to the newspaper.
Three years ago, Sir Keir Starmer nearly stepped down as Labour leader. It was 2021, and his party had just suffered a defeat in the Hartlepool by-election to Boris Johnson’s Conservatives, losing the seat for the first time.
Fast forward to today, and those three years seem like a political eternity. Sir Keir has now become only the fifth person in British history to lead Labour from opposition to power.
His party has transformed from a significant defeat in the 2019 general election to a victorious 2024. The Hartlepool loss serves as a stark reminder that Sir Keir’s path to Downing Street was anything but smooth.
His life and career had been on a very different trajectory for a long time.
Baby Keir was born to Labour-supporting parents
Keir Starmer, raised in the town of Oxted on the border of Kent and Surrey, was one of four siblings. His upbringing was shaped by his father, a toolmaker, and his mother, a nurse who battled with Still’s disease, a severe form of arthritis.
Sir Keir has openly discussed the difficulties of his childhood, particularly during the high inflation era of the 1970s.
“If you’re working class, you’re scared of debt,” he said during the election campaign.
“My mum and dad were scared of debt, so they would choose the bill that they wouldn’t pay.” The choice was the phone bill.
A young Keir, on the right, excelled at music, playing the flute, piano, violin and recorder
In his youth, Sir Keir Starmer led a multifaceted life. He had a passion for football, often found on the left side of midfield, and showed musical talent, studying violin under Norman Cook, later known as DJ Fatboy Slim.
Known for his rebellious spirit, Sir Keir and his friends once found themselves in trouble with the police for illegally selling ice cream on a French beach to raise funds.
Politics also played a role from early on, evidenced by his name honoring Keir Hardie, the first leader of the Labour Party. Before entering Parliament, Sir Keir engaged in left-wing political activities, hinting at his future path in public service.
Sir Keir, pictured lying down, poses with flatmates during his student years in Leeds
That started at school, when he joined the Young Socialists, Labour’s youth movement.
After school, Sir Keir became the first person in his family to go to university, studying law at Leeds University and later at Oxford.
At Leeds, he was influenced by the indie music of the 1980s, from The Smiths and The Wedding Present to Orange Juice and Aztec Camera.
His biographer, Tom Baldwin, notes his favourite drink as a student was a mix of beer and cider – or Snakebite – and he had a taste for curry and chips.
During his tenure under the 2010-15 coalition government, Sir Keir Starmer faced the challenge of implementing substantial cuts, including reducing the Crown Prosecution Service’s budget by more than 25%.
His responsibilities also included overseeing high-profile cases such as prosecuting MPs involved in the parliamentary expenses scandal of 2009 and prosecuting Chris Huhne, then a Liberal Democrat cabinet minister, for perverting the course of justice by asking his wife to take speeding points for him.
In recognition of his legal achievements, Sir Keir was knighted in 2014. Evaluating his leadership, towards the end of his term, Sir Keir acknowledged in a BBC interview that the justice system continued to fail vulnerable victims, highlighting ongoing challenges despite his efforts.
For a while after graduating, Sir Keir lived above a brothel in north London.
Questions have persisted over Sir Keir’s backing of Jeremy Corbyn
At the age of 52, Sir Keir Starmer embarked on a career change by securing a safe Labour seat in north London, winning comfortably alongside his contemporary, Rishi Sunak. However, his entry into Parliament coincided with a challenging period for the Labour Party, freshly defeated in the general election and facing internal turmoil under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.
Questions surrounding Sir Keir’s alignment with Jeremy Corbyn have been persistent throughout his journey from backbencher to Labour leader and now potentially to Downing Street.
His initial appointment as shadow immigration minister by Corbyn was short-lived, resigning less than a year later along with many others in protest following the Brexit referendum.
Despite these tensions, Sir Keir returned as shadow Brexit secretary, showcasing a pragmatic approach in navigating Labour’s stance on EU withdrawal.
Over time, Sir Keir’s stance on Corbyn evolved. Initially supportive in public statements and working towards electoral success, he later emerged as Corbyn’s successor after the 2019 election debacle for Labour.
Sir Keir made big changes to the Labour party during his time in opposition
Despite low expectations, Sir Keir’s leadership was seen as a potential catalyst for Labour’s rebuilding efforts, contrasting sharply with the long-standing assumption of Boris Johnson’s enduring governance.
Sir Keir’s Labour trailed Mr Johnson’s Conservatives in the polls for much of 2020 and 2021 when the Hartlepool by-election was held.
But that started to change after the first reports of Downing Street parties during the pandemic, when strict restrictions were in place around social gatherings.
There is a clear point in the polls where Labour overtakes the Conservatives in November 2021. Its lead increased significantly after the Liz Truss mini budget and has been consistent and significant ever since.
A ‘ruthless’ leader Sir Keir’s allies argue that wouldn’t have happened without big changes in the Labour Party. Sir Keir has sometimes been ruthless. Jeremy Corbyn was thrown out of the parliamentary party and ultimately barred from standing as a Labour candidate. Economic policy was tightened; meaning policies were junked if they weren’t seen as affordable. Sir Keir embraced British patriotism, using the union jack as a backdrop for speeches and getting his conference to sing God Save the King.
All of that has contributed to Sir Keir’s message of change. He spent the campaign arguing he had changed Labour and could change the country too.
The election result will also mean change for the Starmer family. Sir Keir, now 61, married his wife Victoria in 2007. Her intention is to keep working for the NHS in occupational health as he serves as prime minister.
Lady Starmer has been seen at some high-profile events like conference speeches, a rally last week – and at a Taylor Swift gig. But she is unlikely to play as prominent a role in public life as some partners have in the past.
Sir Keir and Victoria married in 2007
Sir Keir though has been candid about the impact high office could have, particularly on his teenage son and daughter. He told the BBC in 2021: “I am worried about my children. That is probably the single thing that does keep me awake – as to how we will protect them through this.” It’s a challenge the Starmers will now face as they move into Downing Street at the end of a testing, far from straightforward, journey.
Arne Slot has provided insight into Liverpool’s transfer strategies and acknowledged the significant challenge of succeedingJurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Formerly with Feyenoord, Slot is Liverpool’s first head coach, a new role stemming from a structural change in the club’s sporting hierarchy.
He will collaborate closely with the new sporting director, Richard Hughes, to build the squad for the upcoming season. Slot emphasized that his experience in European football has equipped him for this role, where he will work alongside Hughes to secure the best transfer deals.
Talking to reporters, Slot said: “For me, it is not a change. In Europe, we work like this, and I’ve worked at Feyenoord and my former clubs in a similar way. There are not many clubs in the world where one person decides everything. It is a collaboration between many people.
I don’t think there are many sporting directors who bring in players the manager or head coach doesn’t like, and it is the other way around.”
While Slot avoided specifying the exact areas he intends to strengthen, he expressed confidence in the existing squad’s quality and potential.
“Not in specific numbers. There is already a real good team, there were a few new signings last season,” he said.
“So the longer a team plays together if there is a good head coach normally you will see things will improve. It is fortunate I am going to a club where normally not many transfers go out.At Feyenoord, it was almost normal (that) eight, nine, 10 players left the club after every season so it is more difficult for a manager to get this progress.
But here I am expecting him (Hughes) to keep most of our players and I think he wants that himself and from there we can only build.” Taking over from Klopp, who enjoyed immense success during his nine-year tenure, Slot acknowledged the significant expectations placed on him.
“They are big shoes to fill, but you can look at it as inheriting a squad and a team which has a winning culture,” Slot remarked.
“One of the reasons to come here – and there are always more reasons for this – but I do feel we have a real good squad, and as a manager you want to work at a club with good players with an opportunity to win something. The past has shown there is a possibility to win some trophies.
“I like to work with players and like to develop them but I like to win as well, and at this club there is an opportunity to win. It always helps to get to know the city but I think, as a manager, it helps even more if you win most of your games. If we do that in the best possible way it will probably give me some time as well, and if I have time then I can get to know the city a bit better. But it all starts with improving the team and winning as many games as we can.”
When asked about Klopp’s self-description as “the normal one” Slot reflected on the profound impact the German manager had on the club. “It’s special what Jurgen did to this club,” he said. “When he arrived, he said he was the ‘normal one,’ but what made him special was the impression he left behind, winning trophies and his playing style – the fans loved it.
Maybe he said he was the normal one, but I think the fans saw him differently. What he did for the club was more than normal.”
Slot’s appointment heralds a new chapter for Liverpool, building on the robust foundationestablished by Klopp. The Dutchman’s focus on teamwork and continuity indicates a balanced approach to sustaining Liverpool’s competitive edge while promoting long-term success.
As the new head coach takes on his role, fans will be keen to observe how Slot’s strategies develop and how he manages the challenges and opportunities of leading one of the world’s most renowned football clubs.
Real Madrid’s acquisition ofKylian Mbappé doesn’t ensure they will replicate last season’s title triumph according to LaLiga president Javier Tebas.
Madrid, who clinched the LaLiga title with a 10-point lead and four games to spare in the 2023-24 season, have bolstered their squad by signing Mbappé on a five-year deal from Paris Saint-Germain.
This move has raised questions about the league’s competitiveness in the upcoming season, but in an interview with ESPN Mexico, Tebas expressed no concerns about the impact on LaLiga’s balance.
“A star arriving doesn’t always mean a team is better,” Tebas said. “There are other factors. [Toni] Kroos won’t carry on, Nacho [Fernández] won’t carry on either.
Without Mbappé, they won the league with four games left and withMbappé now, it doesn’t mean they’ll win the league with eight games left. That won’t happen.”
Communications director for the campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has refuted claims thatDr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO),Dr. Bawumia’s chosen running mate, is arrogant.
He asserted that these accusations come from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who have previously made similar false allegations against NPP presidential candidates such as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Miracles Aboagye emphasized that anyone who has worked closely with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, knows that he is confident, not arrogant.
“These allegations wouldn’t work; we have advanced. People used to believe these things in the past. If you can recall, in the past, there were similar allegations against Kufuor and Nana Addo. People said Kufuor and Nana Addo were womanisers.
For Kufuor, people said he had relations with a white woman which resulted in the birth of twins, Paul and Peter. Later, we went to look into these things, and it was not true.
“Anybody who tells you that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is arrogant is an NDC member; he or she just wants to spoil his name. Almost every other Ghanaian who is not partisan and has worked with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh would bear witness that he is a team player, a goal-getter, results-oriented,” he said in Twi.
He highlighted NAPO’s successful tenure as Minister of Education as evidence that he is not arrogant.
“Can someone who is arrogant work at the Ministry of Education for four years without any labour unrest? Do you know that it takes love, humility, patience, and respect to deal with labour unions? Boldness and assertiveness are not the same as arrogance. Confidence is not the same as arrogance.”
Dennis Miracles Aboagye further suggested that former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, is the one who could be described as arrogant, citing past comments he has made.
He concluded by stating that boldness and assertiveness should not be confused with arrogance, and that confidence should not be mistaken for arrogance.
Man City’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) case, which includes 115 charges, could extend for another two seasons, according to former Everton CEO Keith Wyness.
The Premier League champions were accused of financial mismanagement in 2023 after a thorough investigation revealed issues dating back to 2009. Although the case is scheduled to be heard by the end of the year, a final verdict may not come anytime soon.
Complicating matters, City have initiated their own legal action against the Premier League regarding Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules. With numerous complexities and neither side willing to concede, this ongoing saga seems poised to continue for the foreseeable future.
Ex-Everton chief Wyness – who now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – shares that opinion and has told Football Insider of a complicated process: “There are two cases – the Man City legal challenge, and the 115 charges. With appeals, this could drag on for another two seasons.
This is a very tricky situation to solve, and there has to be some way that this can be got through. People just don’t want it to drag on, they don’t need that. It affects the Premier League brand considerably.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has got to think about his points about the top six having more say. Here is one of the top six potentially damaging the whole Premier League more than anything else.
If they want that responsibility, they’ve got to show responsibility and not gallivant around shouting about a European Super League. Right now, these clubs are completely absent from any leadership position.”
A Sudan Football Association official,Badrelin Ibrahim, has announced that Sudan’s upcoming match against Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers will take place at Juba National Stadium in South Sudan.
This decision comes amid ongoing political challenges in Sudan, prompting the national team to relocate their home games to more stable venues.
Ibrahim mentioned in an interview with Angel TV that Juba Stadium, which underwent recent renovations and was officially opened in June 2024, will also host Sudan’s matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“Sudan will be playing AFCON qualifying games and also the World Cup qualifying games in South Sudan at the new Juba stadium. We are excited to play in such an environment.
There was an inauguration match there where we won 3-0,” said Ibrahim.

Emi Martinez saved two crucial penalties, ensuring Argentina’s progression to the Copa America semifinals despite Lionel Messi’s struggles. Argentina has yet to find their peak form in the tournament.
La Albiceleste have often appeared disjointed, a far cry from their World Cup-winning days.
However, Thursday evening saw them scrape through with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Ecuador, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Lionel Messi had a tough match, failing to make a significant impact and missing a penalty.
Yet, his teammates stepped up, with Emi Martinez’s heroics in the shootout proving decisive.
Argentina took the lead after 35 minutes when Lisandro Martinez headed in from a well-executed corner.
Enzo Fernandez had a chance to double the lead before halftime but narrowly missed.
It seemed Argentina would secure the win in regular time, but Kevin Rodriguez’s late header pushed the game to penalties.
Although Messi missed Argentina’s first spot-kick, Emi Martinez’s saves and successful conversions from the rest of La Albiceleste ensured their place in the semifinals for the fifth consecutive time.
Ghanaian actor and football administratorYaw Dabo has successfully brought Arsenal football agent Phil Antwi to Ghana to scout players for UK clubs.
The Arsenal agent arrived from the UK at Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. Yaw Dabo and fellow actor Don Little warmly welcomed him.
Phil Antwi’s visit focuses on identifying promising football talents in Ghana for potential development in Europe.
Yaw Dabo, recognized for his soccer academy’s role in nurturing local talent, expressed optimism about the opportunities Phil’s visit could bring.
He emphasized Ghana’s history of producing top footballers like Mohammed Kudus and Thomas Partey, who emerged through similar scouting efforts.
Dabo, passionate about his ambitions as a football administrator, has recently engaged in efforts in Europe to create pathways for young Ghanaian footballers to reach professional levels.
Phil Antwi, known for his connections with European clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal, plans to watch matches in Accra and Kumasi to scoutplayers for overseas clubs.
There is increasing pressure on Sudan national team head coach Kwasi Appiah to resign from his position as an Executive Council Member of theGhana Football Association (GFA)due to a significant potential conflict of interest.
Appiah’s dual roles as Sudan’s national team coach and a member of the GFA Executive Council have come under scrutiny after Ghana and Sudan were drawn against each other for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in a recent draw held in South Africa.
This situation puts the former Ghana international in a position where he must work against Ghana, a country where he holds considerable influence as part of the 12-member Executive Council, the second-highest decision-making body in Ghanaian football.
There have been growing calls for Appiah to step down from his Executive Council role following his appointment as Sudan’s national team coach. However, Appiah has resisted these calls and attempted to juggle both responsibilities.
According to sources from Ghana’s leading football website, GHANAsoccernet.com, Appiah has struggled to participate actively in Executive Council meetings due to his demanding schedule.
With the Black Stars set to face the Falcons of Jediane for a spot in the2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the calls for Appiah’s resignation from the GFA Executive Council have intensified.
Critics argue that it is illogical for him to remain in a position where he would be expected to strategize against Sudan while simultaneously managing the team Ghana seeks to defeat.
Appiah’s role in the GFA is increasingly seen as untenable due to the clear conflict of interest.
Given his commitments with the Sudan national team and his involvement with Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee, it is argued that his position within the GFA Executive Council is now more problematic than ever.
Man Utd is willing to consider offers for Rashford.
Rashford’s future was closely linked to that of Ten Hag. With Ten Hag staying on as head coach, the club is looking to generate funds by selling the 26-year-old academy graduate.
Manchester United is seeking £80 million for Rashford but may have to settle for around £60 million due to his dip in form last season, which also led to his exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros.
Tensions between Rashford and Ten Hag reportedly escalated towards the season’s end, especially after Rashford chose to party in Belfast instead of attending training at Carrington.
This incident followed a warning from Ten Hag regarding Rashford’s behavior after a heavy derby defeat to Manchester City.
The most damaging incident in their relationship occurred when Rashford was omitted from an FA Cup tie against Newport County. He had stayed out late on Friday and then called in sick the following day, with the match scheduled for Sunday.
Rashford had anticipated Ten Hag’s departure, hoping for a fresh start.
However, new United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe decided to retain Ten Hag after the Dutchman led Manchester United to victory in the FA Cup final.
National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed information about Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo’s recommendation for appointing five judges to the Supreme Court.
During a press briefing on Thursday, July 4, 2024, NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey disclosed that they possess a letter from the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Acheampong Boafo, opposing President Akufo-Addo’s attempt to unconstitutionally appoint five additional judges to the Supreme Court.
According to the NDC, the letter indicates that the GBA believes the president and Chief Justice’s proposal to increase the number of Supreme Court Justices to 20 would bypass necessary constitutional amendments.
“The GBA argues forcefully that the request by President Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to increase the minimum number of justices at the Supreme Court to 20 will lead to circumvention of the required constitutional amendment, hence their rejection of same.
“The GBA proposed a review of the conventional number of justices of the Supreme Court every ten years, calling for broader consultation with other key stakeholders such as the Council of State and Parliament”.
Fifi Kwetey called on President Akufo Addo to halt any plans to make further appointments when there are a few months to the general elections.
“With general elections set to take place in a few months, we are of the view that President Akufo-Addo must immediately halt his plans to make any further appointments to the superior courts.
This is in view of the fact that he has already packed the courts with too many of his loyalists to the disbelief of many right-thinking Ghanaians and consummate democrats,” he said.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has dismissed a petition frombusinessman Richard Jakpa, who alleged unfair treatment and rights violations by trial judge Afia Serwaa Botwe.
Jakpa, the third accused in the high-profile ambulance trial, claimed he faced unfair treatment and requested the judge’s transfer, accusing the prosecution of heckling him during cross-examination.
The Chief Justice stated that Jakpa did not provide sufficient evidence to support his claims. Jakpa expressed surprise at the Chief Justice’s decision, insisting that court recordings could corroborate his allegations.
“I received a response from the Chief Justice stating that I didn’t provide evidence, so she cannot transfer the judge. She didn’t say my claims were untrue.
The evidence is in the court recordings, which the Chief Justice could have requested, but she refused to do that and said there was no evidence,” Jakpa said on JoyNews.
Following Richard Jakpa’s complaint of unfair treatment, he has informed the public that he formally approached the Chief Justice, raising concerns about what he views as violations of his fundamental rights and entitlements during the court proceedings.
“Right from thebeginning of this trial till today, I have not been treated fairly by the judge. I wrote a petition to the Chief Justice detailing instances of bias, abuse of my human rights, denial of legal representation, and even the right to visit the washroom,” Jakpa stated.
