England goalkeeper Mary Earps has joinedParis Saint-Germain on a free transfer, the French club announced on Monday.
Earps has signed a contract with PSG that will run until the end of the 2025-26 season, following the expiration of her contract with Manchester United at the end of June. Despite previous talks to extend her stay at Old Trafford, no agreement was reached.
This marks Earps’ second venture outside of England, having played for Wolfsburg during the 2018-19 season. She joined Manchester United the following year, making 102 appearances for the club across all competitions.
The 31-year-old earned the WSL Golden Glove award for the 2022-2023 season, setting a new league record with 14 clean sheets.
Earps was instrumental inManchester United’s FA Cup victory last season, securing the club’s first major trophy in history. She delivered a series of exceptional saves in the semifinal against Chelsea and kept a clean sheet in the final against Tottenham.
During her tenure at United, Earps also achieved international success, winning the Euros with England in 2022 and earning the Golden Glove at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Despite her impressive penalty save in the final against Spain, England fell short, losing 1-0.
Recognized as one of the world’s premier goalkeepers, Earps received The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award in January, marking her second consecutive win.
Barcelona is amongthe prominent clubs showing interest in Athletic Club and Spain winger Nico Williams, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The 21-year-old has garnered admiration from various European clubs, but the Blaugrana are particularly keen on securing his transfer.
Barça has been notably impressed by Williams’ exceptional one-on-one skills, a trait that has stood out during Euro 2024.
Williams showcased his talent in group stage victories over Croatia and Italy before being rested for the win against Albania. He made a significant impact in La Roja’s 4-1 round-of-16 victory over Georgia, providing his first tournament goal contributions by assisting Rodri’s equalizer and scoring Spain’s third goal with a brilliant solo effort past Giorgi Gvelesiani.
Performances like these have further boosted Williams’ reputation, which has already grown this season with eight goals and 19 assists in 39 matches across all competitions at the club level.
While discussions about Williams’ future will likely continue throughout the summer, his current focus remains on excelling at the Euros as Spain prepares to face hosts Germany in the quarterfinals.
Chidinma Modupe Okafor has shattered the Guinness World Recordfor the longest crocheting marathon, clocking in at 72 hours.
During her three-day “crochet-a-thon,” the 30-year-old from Lagos crafted a white dinner gown, breaking the previous record of 34 hours and seven minutes set by Alessandra Hayden (USA) in 2021.
Okafor, who has been crocheting clothes and accessories since childhood, shared that her lifelong passion for the craft, along with a desire to challenge herself both mentally and physically, motivated her to pursue this record.
She told Guinness World Records, “I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits.”
Detroit has made history with the launch of Sports Rap Radio, the first all-Black-led sports radio station in the U.S.
Chidinma Modupe Okafor had to crochet nonstop to break the record, moving to the next ball of yarn immediately after finishing the previous one.
As with all “longest marathon” record attempts, Okafor was permitted only two hours of break each day—five minutes per hour of crocheting.
During these brief breaks, she could eat, sleep, use the restroom, or change clothes, but had to continue crocheting for the remaining time.
She recounted, “My preparation for the record attempt involved rigorous training and mental conditioning. It also required physical endurance and strategizing to maintain a consistent pace while minimizing fatigue.
“Additionally, logistics such as arranging for sufficient yarn with support staff were crucial for the uninterrupted progress of the attempt.”
Initially, Okafor planned to crochet a wedding gown, but as exhaustion set in, she opted for a dinner gown instead, explaining, “I couldn’t do extra hours.”
She was inspired by Hilda Baci,a fellow Nigerian who achieved the record for the longest cooking marathon the previous year.
Kenya’s President William Ruto has announced that additional borrowing will be necessary to sustain government operations after a finance bill, aimed at increasing tax revenue, was rejected due to widespread public opposition.
Last Wednesday, the president responded to violent protests, including the burning of parliament, by withdrawing the contentious bill proposing tax hikes.
However, he lamented on Sunday that this decision had effectively set the country’s economic progress back by two years.
He emphasized the challenge of managing a substantial national debt without the ability to implement additional tax measures.
He said this meant Kenya would have to borrow one trillion shillings ($7.6bn; £6.1bn) just “to be able to run our government”.
This represents a 67% increase from the initial plan.
Additionally, he indicated a contemplation of reducing expenditures across various government sectors, including his own office, as well as decreasing allocations to the judiciary and county governments.
Many demonstrators opposed the tax hikes, arguing that any additional revenue would be misused.
The intended tax adjustments aimed to generate approximately 350 billion Kenyan shillings, while borrowing was projected to reach about 600 billion.
President Ruto underscored that these tax proposals were part of a strategy to alleviate Kenya’s substantial debt burden, which exceeds $80 billion (£63 billion). Approximately 60% of the country’s revenue is currently allocated to servicing this debt.
“I have been working very hard to pull Kenya out of a debt trap… It is easy for us, as a country, to say: ‘Let us reject the finance bill.’ That is fine. And I have graciously said we will drop the finance bill, but it will have huge consequences,” the president said while speaking to journalists on Sunday night.
Mr. Ruto expressed concerns that the budget’s rejection would impact 46,000 junior secondary school teachers on temporary contracts and affect healthcare services. He noted that planned government support for dairy, sugarcane, and coffee farmers, including debt payments to their factories and cooperative societies, would be affected.
Addressing criticisms of the finance bill, Mr. Ruto mentioned considering cost-cutting measures in his office and potentially eliminating budgets for the First Lady and the Deputy President’s spouse.
Despite withdrawing the finance bill, public discontent persists, with further protests scheduled for the coming week. Demonstrators are demanding greater government accountability, with some calling for the president’s resignation. They also accuse the government of being insensitive to their grievances and criticize the police for their harsh response to the protests, which resulted in at least 23 deaths and numerous injuries, as reported by a doctors’ association.
On Sunday the president said the police had “done their best they could”. “If there are any excesses, we have mechanisms to make sure that [they] are dealt with,” he said.
Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudushas reflected on his stunning bicycle kick goal for West Ham in their final match of the Premier League 2023/24 season against Manchester City.

Despite West Ham’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City in the match, Kudus’ goal captured the attention and admiration of fans.

“Those kinds of actions are just instinct; they barely happen in the game. When I envisioned it in my head, I just went with my instinct, and I am glad that it went exactly the way I pictured it,” Kudus said.
In his first season at West Ham, Kudus impressed with a total of 20 goal involvements, scoring 14 goals and assisting 6.
The 23-year-old received recognition for his outstanding goals, winning both the West Ham Goal of the Season and the Europa Goal of the Season awards.

The minister emphasized that this restructuring would ensure a continuous six-year secondary education, with new schools accommodating both JHS and SHS students on the same campuses.
Existing schools with combined JHS and SHS programs would continue this practice, resembling the traditional model where students from different levels studied together.
Dr. Adutwum highlighted that the bill aims to revive a system similar to the old Middle School and Secondary School setup, where theCommon Entrance Examinationdetermined school placement and the Hall Examination served as certification for employment or further education opportunities.

The proposed Free SHS bill, yet to be presented in parliament, aims to overhaul the education system by removing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as a prerequisite for entry into secondary school, according to Graphic.com.gh.
Under the bill, junior high school (JHS) would be separated from basic school and integrated into a six-year secondary education framework. The BECE would solely serve as a tool for school placement.
Dr. Adutwum explained that if passed, SHS certification would become the primary academic qualification in Ghana, replacing the current BECE certification.
The minister emphasized that this restructuring would ensure a continuous six-year secondary education, with new schools accommodating both JHS and SHS students on the same campuses.
Existing schools with combined JHS and SHS programs would continue this practice, resembling the traditional model where students from different levels studied together.
Dr. Adutwum highlighted that the bill aims to revive a system similar to the old Middle School and Secondary School setup, where the Common Entrance Examination determined school placement and the Hall Examination served as certification for employment or further education opportunities.
Why Legislation?
During an interaction with journalists, Dr. Adutwum highlighted the importance of legislating Free SHS. He noted that while the current policy is not mandatory, future governments might discontinue it if they deem it unnecessary.
“We need a law that ensures free, compulsory universal secondary education. This means the minimum education for Ghanaians should be senior high school, not junior high school,” he stressed.
The proposed bill seeks to expand on the constitutional guarantee of free compulsory universal basic education (FCUBE) provided by the 1992 Constitution, extending this right to secondary education in line with Article 38.
This article mandates the state to furnish educational facilities across all levels and ensure access for every citizen.
Dr. Adutwum highlighted the significant impact of the Free SHS policy, which saw a record enrollment of over 505,000 students in its inaugural year.
Despite this achievement, he expressed concern about students not continuing toSHS due to age-related issues, arguing that mandatory secondary education could mitigate vulnerabilities to crime and societal challenges.
The minister praised the Free SHS policy’s positive influence in northern regions, where junior to senior high school transition rates notably exceed those in the south. For example, the Northern Region boasts a 95% transition rate compared to the Volta Region’s 66%.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin challenged the Minority in Parliament to clarify their position on the Free SHS legislation. He announced Executive approval for the Free SHS Bill, slated for imminent introduction in Parliament.
In response, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson clarified that the Minority Caucus does not oppose the bill and urged swift presentation to Parliament.
Dr. Forson reiterated Minority support for policies aimed at sustaining and enhancing the Free SHS initiative.
Since its inception in 2017, the Free SHS policy has benefited over 3.04 million students but has also faced criticism regarding issues like feeding, accommodation, extended vacations, and uncertainties in the SHS academic calendar.
Some educators and think tanks advocate for policy reviews to address these challenges and ensure sustainable funding.
France captain Kylian Mbappe expressed his frustration with playing while wearing a mask, describing the experience as “absolutely horrible.”
The 25-year-old striker sustained a broken nose following a collision during France’s 1-0 victory against Austria in their opening game of Euro 2024. After missing the subsequent goalless draw with the Netherlands, Mbappe returned to the field, scoring in the 1-1 draw with Poland.
Despite his return to form, he found wearing the protective mask uncomfortable. As he prepares to lead his team in the Euro 2024 last-16 match against Belgium on Monday, Mbappe’s discomfort with the mask remains a challenge.
“I didn’t think it would be, but playing with a mask is absolutely horrible,” Mbappe said before the Belgium game in Dusseldorf.
“I have changed [the mask] because every time there was something that wasn’t right.
“It is really difficult. It limits your vision and the sweat gets blocked up so you have to take it off to let it run away.
“As soon as I can take it off I will do, but I don’t have a choice. That is how my tournament is going to be. I can only play like that.
“It is really annoying, but I have to just say thanks to the mask.”
Mbappe’s goal against Poland was a penalty, meaning France are yet to score from open play at the tournament.
“It’s not the group matches anymore,” boss Didier Deschamps said. “It’s a new competition within the competition.
“You have to be efficient. To win matches, you have to score. That’s not done by snapping your fingers, but you need to move the cursor [closer to goal].”
In the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, France secured a 1-0 victory en route to claiming the championship.
Similarly, Belgium secured their spot in the next round by drawing 0-0 against Ukraine after finishing second in their group.
“The quality and quantity of chances we made in the first three games was unbelievable,” he said.
“It is unbelievable that we scored only two goals in three games, and France too, but this is football.”
Belgium were booed after the goalless draw with Ukraine, but midfielder Orel Mangala believes the fans will be behind them on Monday.
“I believe that has been cleared up,” he said.
“I can understand that [reaction]. We we were all frustrated. Now we are facing a new match and I hope that all the fans stand with us and we’ll play with a lot of imagination.”

The origin of his nickname is linked to an accusation by journalist Fiifi Banson, who suggested that Arhinful was the neatest player on the Black Stars team.
This nickname, implying Arhinful’s impeccable cleanliness on the field, was born from a sarcastic comment made by Banson. The journalist accused Arhinful of avoiding tackles, quickly getting back on his feet, and checking his shirt after challenges.
This accusation came after a poor performance against Côte d’Ivoire during the 2000 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Despite the usual muddy conditions of the pitches in the ’90s, Arhinful’s nickname intriguingly suggests that he managed to keep his shirt clean, sparking curiosity about his on-field habits.
In an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah, Arhinful shared the story behind his nickname, revealing how Banson’s comments led to the creation of this unique reputation. This anecdote highlights the unexpected ways in which footballers can earn their nicknames, often beyond their playing abilities.
“I got injured against Cameroon in the first game; I had a groin injury. I didn’t play the next game against Togo, but Giuseppe Dossena (then Black Stars coach) wanted me to play against Côte d’Ivoire at all costs. They injected me and iced me.
Due to the sheer pressure from him and my love for wanting to represent the nation, I said, ‘Okay, maybe I will play.’ But any other coach probably wouldn’t have played me because Yaw Preko had played a good game against Togo,” he said.
“In that match against Côte d’Ivoire, I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t run because, as you know, a groin injury gets worse when you try to stretch it.
So, when we lost that match, Fiifi Banson said on his show on Peace FM that it looked like I didn’t want to play. Like, I didn’t even want to fall.
He meant it in a jovial way, but that comment has stuck in the heads of Ghanaians. People who did not even see the game say the same thing and call me that,” he added.
Arhinful emphasized that the nickname does not bother him, as it is unrealistic to expect a player to emerge from a football match without any stains.
“I don’t know, but it also doesn’t bother me.Because you can’t tell me somebody would play football at Caradan Park without getting stained. It’s not possible.”
Having played for Assin Fosu Soccer Missionaries and Ashanti Gold in the Ghana Premier League before moving to Europe, Arhinful is best remembered for his time with Ashanti Gold and Black Stars.

The 30-year-old Juventus player received a four-year suspension for doping offenses after testing positive for elevated testosterone levels in September 2023.
A subsequent B test confirmed the results, leading the National Anti-Doping Tribunal to impose the lengthy ban, sidelining Pogba until 2027.
However, the French Football Federation (FFF) has extended an invitation to Pogba, who boasts 91 caps and 11 goals for his national team, to join the squad as a spectator for the Euro 2024 round of 16 match at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf on Monday.
Pogba, who insists on his innocence and plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), will watch his team from the stands despite being banned from participating in any UEFA-sanctioned events.

Freezy clinched victory with a fourth-round technical knockout after Labaran, who had initially appeared to dominate, was incapacitated by shoulder pain.
Labaran’s inability to continue the match due to his injury led to Freezy’s fourth win in his professional boxing career.
At 33, Freezy Macbones has now won all four of his professional fights, with three of those victories coming by knockout.
His only defeat occurred during his amateur career when he was beaten by Senegalese boxer Seydou Konate in August 2023 during the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal.

Details have surfaced regarding the scandalous affair involving Nurein Shaibu Migyimah, theNational Democratic Congress (NDC)Parliamentary Candidate for Assin Central, and the wife of the party’s Constituency Secretary.
This revelation has ignited widespread outrage within the party.
Initial reports indicated that Migyimah’s illicit relationship with the Secretary’s wife led to her pregnancy and subsequent relocation, which severely tarnished his reputation and resulted in his suspension from the party.
It was alleged that Migyimah, after impregnating the Secretary’s wife, moved her to Kasoa and arranged accommodation for her there.
These allegations, substantiated by evidence, have plunged the NDC Central Regional Secretariat into turmoil as it grapples with the fallout from the incident.
Further investigation has revealed even more shocking details, including secret meetings between Migyimah and the Secretary’s wife at their matrimonial home in his absence, where they engaged in inappropriate activities.
The NDC’s Central Regional Organizer, Michael M. Derry, revealed in an interview that suspicions of infidelity led the Secretary to install cameras in his home. These cameras captured numerous intimate encounters between Nurein Shaibu Migyimah and the Secretary’s wife.
Previously suspended for six months, pending a formal hearing by the Regional Disciplinary Committee, Migyimah faced charges of “immoral acts and anti-party conduct.”
This suspension has now resulted in his imminent removal as the 2024 Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate by the NDC Central Regional Functional Executive Committee.
In a recent turn of events, the party has intensified sanctions against Migyimah. Mr. Gabriel Nii Kommey Adams, Regional Secretary of the NDC, confirmed that after consultations with national party leadership and key stakeholders, the decision was made to revoke Migyimah’s candidacy.
Meanwhile, Nurein Shaibu Migyimah, the candidate for Assin Central Constituency, described recent events as a ‘nightmare,’ but remains confident in his eventual vindication.
In a previous interview he stated, “I have not received any formal communication yet, but I am taking steps within the party’s framework to ensure a fair hearing regarding the ongoing situation.
This is a political party, and we operate under our party’s constitution. I am young and determined to navigate through this.
“I believe, and I know whatever allegation, anything they’ve said or whatever it is, after I go through the right party structures, I’ll be vindicated. God being so good, God willing, ‘Inshallah’, on December 7, I’m going to win the election,” he added.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_-E7A1oh6o
UNESCO World Heritage Site and significant historical landmark in Ghana, James Fort in Accra, has reportedly fallen into disrepair.
According to Bright Simons, a vice president at IMANI Africa, the fort where Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, wrote his autobiography and campaigned during imprisonment, is now in its worst condition since its construction in 1673, over 330 years ago.
Simons noted that UNESCO has urged Ghana to restore James Fort along with other forts in the country. However, the Ghanaian government has cited financial constraints as the reason for being unable to comply with UNESCO’s directives.
“Imagine the sadness of all who care about Ghana’s heritage when they see its current state (check the video and pictures below).
This is the worst state it has ever been in for approximately 330 years. UNESCO has repeatedly told Ghana to fix its forts and castles (it has the most in Africa).
“Ghana says it can’t fix its forts and castles unless UNESCO brings the money. UNESCO says it can chip in, but Ghana must lead. After much hassle, Ghana committed GHS 2M (less than $150k).
Woefully short! Time to outsource heritage sites to commercial operators on a merit basis,” Simons wrote in a series of posts shared on X on Saturday, June 29, 2024.
He added, “Saddest of all: perhaps the biggest attraction of James Fort – Nkrumah’s jail cell where he wrote his autobiography and campaigned to victory in Ghana’s first multiparty democratic elections – has simply rotted to mould! By the end of the rainy season, nothing would be left!
The IMANI vice president presented images of the fort, revealing a severely deteriorated structure. Most of the fort’s roofs were decayed and had collapsed, leaving its internal structures exposed to the elements.
National AIDS Control Programme has reported anincrease in HIV infections among infants from their mothers, despite the implementation of the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) program.
Dr. Stephen Ayisi-Addo, Programme Manager of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), attributed this trend to inadequate testing and poor adherence to medication among pregnant women. As a result, newborns are continuing to contract the virus from their mothers.
Speaking at the 2023 dissemination of National HIV estimates, Dr. Ayisi-Addo expressed concern over the persistent transmission of HIV to newborns in healthcare facilities.
The PMTCT initiative, jointly implemented by NACP, the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), and their partners, aims to prevent HIV transmission from mothers to their babies. Pregnant women are screened for HIV during antenatal care, and those diagnosed positive receive medication to safeguard their infants from infection.
Recent data from the National HIV estimation indicates that 12,108 mothers aged 15 to 49 are currently undergoing PMTCT treatment, while an additional 13,445 mothers in the same age group require PMTCT services.
He noted that a lot of the babies contracting HIV from their mothers were babies from mothers who missed testing during ANC, saying, “We are talking covering about 90 per cent of all ANC attendance for HIV testing, so those who come in late do not get the treatment to prevent the mother from transmission to the baby.
“We need to be able to improve theANC testing coverage. We need to improve so that people will have supervised delivery on their routine services offered when pregnant women come to the facility,” he added.
The Programme Manager highlighted that non-adherence to medication among HIV-infected mothers is leading to the transmission of the virus to their newborns.
He emphasized that not all identified mothers receive the necessary antiretroviral treatment to prevent mother-to-child transmission.
Additionally, out of approximately 6,000 PMTCT facilities, only 730 are equipped to provide antiretroviral therapy (ARV). Dr. Ayisi Addo noted that some pregnant women face challenges accessing PMTCT services due to transportation issues, prompting a new strategy to decentralize ARV therapy across all centers.
Dr. Ayisi Addo also addressed postnatal transmission risks, particularly through breastfeeding. To mitigate this, the national response program has implemented strict guidelines for HIV-positive mothers on infant feeding practices.
However, adherence to these guidelines remains a challenge, contributing to ongoing transmission cases.
Acknowledging gaps in the implementation of infant feeding guidelines, the Programme Manager attributed this partly to the shortage of trained service providers available to educate mothers effectively on safe feeding practices, potentially exposing babies to the virus.
“It is our aspiration and determination to make sure that we address all these issues and improve on strategic interventions to improve on the figures and reduce mother to child transmission to at least 2 per cent, which is an elimination target.
Dr Stephen Atuahene, Director General of the GAC, said strict adherence to treatment was key as it suppressed the virus and would help to avoid perinatal transmission.
He said it was important for HIV positivewomen to achieve viral suppression before getting pregnant and necessary to maintain the suppression status, saying, “It is also the responsibility of the mother to adhere to treatment, maintain viral suppression status and avoid transmission.
“As long as you can do that, you have a better chance of averting transmission to your baby and so adherence is very crucial to all persons living with HIV and taking the medication. This is so important for mothers because every woman will want to have a healthy baby and therefore you have to avoid any risk that will expose your child to infection.”
Independent Power Producers (IPPs) Ghana have strongly criticized the government’s recent announcement regarding the restructuring of debt owed to power generators in the country, calling it misleading.
Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam stated that the agreement involves IPPs agreeing to a reduction in their claims and allowing the government to extend payments over five years.
However, CEO Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor of the Independent Power Generators Ghana countered, stating that the last discussion between some IPPs and Ghana’s negotiating team took place in April 2024, with no agreement reached on any terms since then.
“It has come to our attention that the Minister of Finance has made public statements indicating that a deal has been reached with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) regarding debt restructuring. We must categorically state that this assertion is misleading and inaccurate”.
“The last engagement with some of the IPPs and the Government of Ghana’s negotiating team occurred in April [2024] and since then, no agreement on any terms has been reached.
The posture and generalisation that the government has secured a debt restructuring agreement with the IPPs are misleading and amount to public deception”, he added.
“We urge the Minister of Finance to refrain from making such inaccurate statements and to engage in transparent and honest communications”, he pointed out.
He emphasized, however, that the IPPs are dedicated to engaging in productive discussions and reaching a mutually advantageous resolution.

According to an eyewitness, the section near the police barrier in Nnudu has collapsed.
As a result, travelers along the Asikuma-Juapong route are stranded, with motorists facing challenges in finding alternative routes.
He added, “Travelers from Asikuma may need to detour through Ho to Pooree to reach Juapong, and those coming from Juapong should take the Pooree route to Ho, etc. It is a regrettable situation.”
He advised, “Those travelling from Ho should avoid the Juapong road and instead use the Adaklu Adidome road or go through Frankadua to reach Juapong.”
A Ghanaian expatriate residing in the United Kingdom recently recounted her experiences navigatingthe UK healthcare system, highlighting the hurdles she encountered.
From the complexities of scheduling appointments to the challenges of accessing healthcare professionals, she expressed frustration with the system’s efficiency.
Despite following protocols diligently, she found it difficult to secure timely consultations with doctors.
In contrast, she praised Ghana’s healthcare system, noting its perceived superiority. In Ghana, she explained, patients can receive immediate care without the need for prior appointments.
This accessibility stands in stark contrast to her experiences in the UK, where she often faced delays and limited availability of medical professionals.
“In Ghana, you can simply go to the hospital when you feel unwell or have a fever. In the UK, you must register with a local hospital when you fall ill. You then have to call the hospital to schedule an appointment.
Appointment times are restricted, with some hospitals only allowing bookings between certain hours,” she explained in a video posted by Instablog9japbm on Instagram.
“If you call outside of those hours, you cannot book an appointment, even if you are sick. When you call at 9 o’clock, you might be told that you are the 20th person in line and will have to wait.
After waiting, you may be informed that the doctor can only see you the next day or later. All of this while you are unwell,” she added.
Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from unjust criticism of potential candidates for the party’s vice-presidential ticket alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking at a press conference held in Parliament on the matter, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the imperfection of individuals and the need for respectful discourse when discussing potential running mates.
He stressed the importance of unity and cohesion within the party as Dr. Bawumia proceeds with the selection process for the 2024 General Elections.
Afenyo-Markin also highlighted the responsibility of Members of Parliament (MPs) to exercise caution in their public statements concerning candidates vying for the NPP’s vice-presidential candidacy.
“None of us can tick every box. So let’s be careful how we describe each other; how we say things about our colleagues; how we approach things and the language we use. It may not be helpful,” he noted.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s counsel seems to directly address comments made by NPP MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, who previously voiced concerns about Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as a potential running mate.
Despite NAPO being seen as a valuable addition to the NPP’s electoral strategy by several seasoned political analysts, Appiah-Kubi was blunt in his assertion that NAPO was not suitable to partner with Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 General Elections.

With an official announcement anticipated soon, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South,Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is poised to be named as the presidential running mate by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the 2024 general elections.
Political analysts and supporters of Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasize that his selection is pivotal in rallying support and strengthening the party’s dominance in the Ashanti Region.
They believe his nomination carries added significance due to his ties with the Ashanti royal family and the Manhyia Palace.
NAPO’s connection with Manhyia
NAPO was born to Ohenena Kwame Kyeretwie and Madam Elizabeth Akosua Nyarko. His father, one of the many sons of the 14th Asantehene, Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II, made significant contributions during his reign.
Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie played a key role in the establishment of Prempeh College, a well-regarded all-boys boarding school in Kumasi. He also donated land for the creation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which honored him with an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1969.
As the son of the Asantehene, Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie served as the chief of Apagya in the Afigya Kwabre District for more than forty years until his passing on June 23, 2013.
Leveraging royalty for political support
The Manhyia Palace, home to the Asantehene, stands not just as a physical landmark but as a central hub of cultural and political influence in the Ashanti Region.
NAPO’s deep-rooted connection with Manhyia has shaped both his personal identity and political career significantly.
As a direct descendant of Ashanti royalty, NAPO carries the weight of tradition and the expectations that come with his heritage.
His nomination as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate is seen as a strategic move that resonates strongly with the people of the Ashanti Region, who view him as a symbol of their values and aspirations.
The Ashanti Region has long been a stronghold for the NPP, and NAPO’s candidacy is expected to bolster this support even further. His royal lineage, combined with his political expertise, positions him uniquely within the party and makes him a compelling choice for voters.
In terms of political experience, NAPO has served as a Member of Parliament since 2009 and held the pivotal role of Minister for Education during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term.
His tenure as education minister was marked by significant achievements, notably the implementation of the government’s flagship Free Senior High School policy.
Currently, NAPO serves as the Minister for Energy, overseeing the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of energy policies, as well as coordinating activities across Energy Sector Agencies.
He will face off against Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who also boasts a distinguished career as an education minister under a previous NDC administration.
Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,received homage from his subjects and visitors from far and wide during the sacred festival On Sunday, June 24, 2024, .
The event, which took place at the Manhyia Palace, marked the fifth Akwasidae of the year and featured a moment of humor, initiated by the Asantehene himself, much to the amusement of his courtiers and guests.
The light-hearted incident occurred when Lady Julia Osei Tutu, the Asantehene’s wife, led the royal family’s nuclear members to pay their respects.
As Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie, the king’s son, approached to greet his father, some courtiers stepped in to help him adjust his cloth according to custom. Traditionally, a male approaching the king must lower the cloth draped over his shoulder as a sign of respect.
Watching the prince already struggling, being whipped up by the courtiers, His Majesty could not help but retort with a comment: “Na ntoma yi wɔn hunu fira mo san akɔworɔ aka ho…” translated as “He is already struggling with wearing the cloth, and you want to take it off again?”
The king’s clearly humorous attempt had the desired effect, instantly drawing laughter from everyone present, including Nana Kyeretwie’s sister, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem. Seizing the moment, the royal courtiers persisted, giving the young prince a lesson on the proper way to wear a cloth before he finally greeted the king.
In another display of culture and family history, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem presented herself to her father, wearing a kente outfit that her mother, HRH Lady Julia Osei Tutu, had worn over two decades ago.

Concerned Youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)in Tamale have voiced their concerns about the upcoming Health Walk and Health Screening event featuring Mr. Sharaf Mahama, set for June 29, 2024.
While emphasizing the importance of health initiatives, the youth group is worried that this event could sideline established party structures in favor of familial connections.
In a statement dated June 25, 2024, the group pointed to a historical trend where familial ties have overshadowed party mechanisms, resulting in governance marked by nepotism and cronyism.
They cited past administrations where family members of party leaders took central roles, which they believe undermined party unity and eroded public trust.
“While we recognize the importance of health and unity in our activities, we are increasingly worried about the repetition of a historical pattern where familial connections overshadow and sidestep the established party structures.
Recent activities suggest a dangerous prelude to a governance style marred by nepotism and cronyism, as evidenced by past administrations where family members of party leaders assumed central roles in governance, to the detriment of party unity and the public’s trust” the statement noted.
As a result, they fear that Mr. Sharaf Mahama’s prominent role in this event may signal the start of an era where “family connections to power overshadow the rightful roles of party structures.”
They further articulated concerns about how this could potentially lead to a governance approach that prioritizes a privileged few over the broader membership of the party.
“We call upon Mr. Sharaf Mahama and other party leaders to respect the institutional mechanisms of the NDC and to refrain from actions that could centralize power within a specific familial circle,” the statement read.
The group emphasized that the strength of the NDC lies in its democratic values and the equitable participation of all members, not in the consolidation of power within a select few.
“Together, let’s stand for a party that values every member’s contribution and upholds the principles of fairness and democratic governance,” the statement concluded.
Kudus, who had an impressive debut season in England’s top-flight league, selected three of his West Ham teammates along with his Ghanaian compatriot Thomas Partey.
Despite Partey’s limited appearances last season due to injury, his influence on the Arsenal squad was crucial, contributing to their second-place finish.
“Yeah, my countryman TP, I think I will go for him as a defensive midfielder. He’s calm on the ball, controls the game, and I just like him,” he said while forming his squad.
Emerson Palmieri, Lucas Paqueta, and Jarrod Bowen—West Ham’s Player of the Season—were selected for the Ultimate Team, with two other Hammers players making the list.
Manchester City’s goalkeeper Ederson was chosen over Alisson, joining Kyle Walker, Virgil Van Dijk, and William Saliba to complete the defense.
Thomas Partey anchors the midfield alongside Paqueta and Kevin De Bruyne.
A Muslim woman has come to the defense of Ghanaian comedian, actor, and skit maker Dr. Likee following threats against him over alleged ‘degrading’ Islamic skits.
This follows an incident on June 19, 2024, when an angry Muslim man named Khalifa warned Dr. Likee during a live interview to stop producing skits that “downgrade” Islam.
In response, another Muslim, Sumaiyatu, urged her fellow Muslims to uphold the peace and love taught by the Holy Qur’an. In a video shared by @gharticles, Sumaiyatu advised Muslims to communicate without threats or violence towards those who may offend them.
Initially, Sumaiyatu felt a sense of fulfillment when she saw the beginning of Khalifa’s video, thinking that the peace and love taught by their Holy book were finally being embraced.
However, her hopes were dashed when Khalifa’s tone turned violent and threatening, which is completely contrary to their teachings.
“I recently watched a video where a man discussed Dr. Likee and his skits about Islam. At first, he spoke positively, which made me think people were beginning to embrace the peace and love taught by our Holy Qur’an.
However, it soon turned negative. Learn to react calmly without threats. Threats change nothing; learn to communicate peacefully” she stated.
She went on to warn Muslims to learn to practice the dictates of their Holy book, by being peaceful and loving.
“So, my fellow Muslims, allow me to ask: can’t we speak calmly to people when they offend us? Can’t we learn to be polite in our communication and how we convey our messages? Why must we resort to threats and warnings? Does that truly bring satisfaction?
What kind of example are we setting? Are we claiming to be better than anyone else in Ghana? Ghana is not solely for Muslims. The Qur’an teaches us peace and love. Don’t you understand love? she quizzed.
Dr Likee has produced and casted in quite a number of Muslim related stories. In some skits where he acts as a Muslim Mallam who violates the dictates of the Holy Book to stealthily eat during the Ramadan among others.
A viral video surfaced showing Ghanaian afrobeat and dancehall artist Black Sheriff, also known as Blacko, dancing with a group of boys believed to be his high school colleagues.
The video, shared by @gharticles on Instagram on June 25, 2024, captures Blacko wearing an orange shirt tucked into blue three-quarter-length trousers, accessorized with a glittering cream belt around his waist.
In the video, he energetically joins in a freestyle dance session following the leader of what appears to be a high school choreography group.
The video has sparked excitement and amusement among Blacko’s fans online, with some expressing admiration and others citing it as evidence of Blacko’s dynamic dance skills, reminiscent of his energetic stage performances.
One user @mis_s_n_aa1d in reaction to the video said,
“then blacko’s late girlfriend was truly in love with this boy may her perfect soul rest in peace🙏because see ein head😂”
Another @the.joewe1d also added “The same kind of dance he dances today 😂😂😂”
Man Utd plans to relocate their women’s team to temporary buildings at their Carrington training complex next season, allowing the men’s squad to utilize the women’s facility during renovations, sources have confirmed.
According to a source, the decision to move the women’s team to portable buildings has left the players disappointed.
Last year, the club unveiled a £10 million ($12.6m) facility shared by the women’s team and academy, featuring amenities like a gym, rehabilitation areas, changing rooms, and a restaurant with live cooking. However, ongoing renovations now necessitate temporary arrangements.
The Guardian, which broke the news, noted that the portable buildings will house essential areas such as changing rooms, meeting rooms, offices, and communal spaces for the women’s team and staff. Despite the changes, they will continue to use the same pitches and canteen facilities as before.
Renovation work commenced recently on a £50 million upgrade of the men’s first-team building, scheduled for completion by the end of the 2024-25 season.
When revealing the £50m investment, the club said: “Temporary adaptations will be made to the rest of the Carrington site to ensure players and staff from all our teams can continue to operate successfully next season.”
News of the intention to move the women’s team to temporary buildings comes after INEOS chairman and United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said the plans for the women’s team are still to be confirmed.
“We haven’t got into that level of detail with the women’s team yet,” he told Bloomberg. “We’ve been pretty much focused on how we resolve the first team issues, and that’s been pretty full time for the first six months.”
When asked if the plans were to be confirmed, Ratcliffe responded, “Correct.”
Sources have revealed that United are set to lose one of their most high-profile players in Mary Earps, who has rejected a contract extension with the club, with the England goalkeeper closing in on a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Gareth Southgate has expressed concern over the “unusual atmosphere” surrounding the England team after they faced boos despite topping Group C.
He urged supporters to stand behind the team, regardless of their feelings towards him personally.
England managed only four shots on target in a lackluster performance during the latest match, yet they secured top spot in the group as Denmark drew with Serbia.
The team received boos from fans both at half-time and full-time at the RheinEnergieSTADION. After the game, Southgate approached the England supporters to show his appreciation; while some reacted positively, others booed and a few beer cups were thrown towards him.
Southgate’s contract with the Football Association expires in December, with a decision on his future to be made after the tournament concludes.
Some fans have questioned whether he is still the right man to lead England after eight years in charge and Southgate said of the full-time reaction: “I understand it. I’m not going to back away from it. The most important thing here is that the supporters stay with the team.
“I understand the narrative towards me and that’s better for than it being towards them. But it is creating an unusual environment to operate in. I’ve not seen any team qualify and receive similar.
“I recognise that when you have moments at the end of the game, I’m asking the players to be fearless, I’m not going to back down from going over and thanking the fans who were brilliant during the game.
“They might feel differently towards me. But for me, we only will succeed if we are together. That energy is crucial for the team and it is so important they stay with the team, however they feel towards me.”
Asked what had changed about the environment around the team, Southgate replied: “I think probably expectation. We’ve made England over the last six or seven years fun again. I think it has been enjoyable for the players. We’ve got to be very, very careful that it stays that way.”
Despite the mixed reaction from fans, England captainHarry Kanenoted an improvement in the team’s performance compared to their previous outing, a 1-1 draw against Denmark.
“That was the aim before the start of the tournament, come top of the group and control our destiny,” he told ITV. “I thought we played a lot better than the other games. We couldn’t just find that finish but we look forward to the next one.
“We created some half chances and there were some that we could maybe have done better.
“I think the boys who came on did really well and kept the energy high and that’s what we need. We need everyone chipping in and that’s what we are doing so far.
“These games are tough. We have been here before and stepped it up in the past when we have got to the knockouts. All games in this tournament are tough. It is going to be a difficult challenge ahead and we have enough ability to keep pushing.”
England must wait to learn their round-of-16 opponents but will play one of the four best third-placed in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.
Several top European clubs, including Barcelona,Man Utd, and Man City, are actively pursuing RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo, according to Nicolo Schira.
Olmo, 26, had an impressive season in the Bundesliga, contributing four goals and five assists, which has sparked interest from multiple top-tier teams across the continent.
Reports indicate that Olmo has a release clause of €60 million, valid until July.
Manchester City is reportedly looking to bolster their midfield options, especially with Kevin De Bruyne’s contract entering its final year and interest from Saudi Pro League clubs.
The uncertain future of Bernardo Silva at the Etihad Stadium adds to City’s interest in Olmo, who could potentially fill a crucial role for the Premier League champions.
Barcelona, despite their financial challenges, are also in the race for Olmo’s signature.
The midfielder has expressed interest in joining the Catalan giants previously, but Barcelona’s financial constraints could complicate any potential deal.
Manchester United is another club keen on Olmo, aiming to strengthen their attacking options this summer.
Olmo’s versatility, capable of playing on the wing or as a striker, makes him an attractive prospect for the Red Devils as they look to enhance their squad.
Earlier this week, the owners of Kevin, a remarkable Great Dane from Iowa known as the tallest male dogin the world, announced his passing, leaving them devastated.
In a statement issued on Monday, Guinness World Records, which officially recognized Kevin as the world’s tallest dog in March, revealed that the three-year-old Great Dane had succumbed to illness following an unforeseen surgical procedure.
In a statement, Kevin’s co-owners, Tracy and Roger Wolfe said, “He was just the best giant boy”.
“We are so glad that he was able to break the record and have that light on him. He absolutely adored the attention. I wish these giant breeds, and all dogs, could live longer than they do. It’s never enough time,” the statement read.
Kevin, the towering Great Dane from Iowa, stood at an impressive 3 feet 2 inches (0.97 meters) from his paws to his shoulder blades.
Guinness World Records noted Kevin’s height exceeded that of an average male Great Dane by eight inches, placing him on par with the stature of many toddlers.
Kevin claimed the title of the world’s tallest living male dog after the passing of Zeus, another American Great Dane, six months earlier. Zeus, who succumbed to pneumonia and battled bone cancer, stood at 3 feet 5.18 inches (1.046 meters) tall during his life.
In a recent interview released by Guinness World Records on June 13th, Kevin’s owners, based in West Des Moines, Iowa, fondly recalled his playful demeanor despite his extraordinary size.
They described life with Kevin, where he shared space with their family, including two small children, alongside other animals like dogs, cats, chickens, goats, and horses.
Kevin, who took his name after the main character in the Home Alone movie series, was well-known for being “terrified of” the vacuum cleaner in the house.
During that interview, Tracy Wolfe expressed amazement at Kevin’s ability to maintain a trim figure while consuming up to 10 cups of food every day and resting for much of the day. “Kevin is just the epitome of a gentle giant. He was … just perfect for us.”
National Sports Authority (NSA) refuted allegations of leasing the Borteyman Sports Complex for religious purposes, emphasizing instead that the event held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, was organized as an educational tour for students.
According to the NSA’s latest statement, the visit was arranged by student bodies from the University of Ghana, the University of Professional Studies, and Valley View University, in collaboration with their respective student representative councils (SRCs).
The purpose of the tour was to familiarize students with the facilities at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
Furthermore, the NSA clarified that the itinerary included a presentation by an unnamed Deputy Minister, contributing to the educational aspect of the tour.
“A letter sent to us stated that “the SRC of the University of Ghana, University of Professional Studies, Valley View University, and other institutions requested a special visitation to the Borteyman Sports Complex as part of a tour of the newest attraction in Accra”.
They intended to tour the facilities at the venue,” the statement read.
“A church was supposed to provide transportation for the students, and subsequently, a Deputy Minister was scheduled to give them a lecture on leadership. Therefore, they were granted access to the hall for this purpose.”
The NSA’s statement comes in reaction to a supposed church service video shared by Sports Journalist Fentuo Tahiro with the caption: “Borteyman Sports Complexis now a church. That didn’t take long.”
The Borteyman Sports Complex features extensive facilities designed to accommodate a range of sporting activities. Among its offerings are a state-of-the-art swimming arena equipped with a 1,000-seat capacity.
This includes a primary 10-lane competition pool alongside an auxiliary eight-lane warm-up pool.
Moreover, the complex houses a versatile multipurpose sports hall that can host up to 1,000 spectators. This flexible space accommodates diverse sports such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.
In addition to these amenities, there is a temporary 500-seat dome suitable for handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, fencing, and arm-wrestling.
The venue also boasts a comprehensive five-court tennis complex, featuring a prominent 1,000-seat center court.
During a study visit toKenya, MPs Emmanuel Gyamfi, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Thomas Ampem, Sylvester Tetteh, and Mohammed Tuferu found themselves amid chaos as hundreds of anti-Finance Bill protesters stormed the Parliament.
The demonstrators set police vehicles ablaze and breached heavy security in response to the approval of the Finance Bill 2024, which introduces new taxes.
The Ghanaian delegation was safely escorted away, though they had inhaled some tear gas during the commotion.
During a media engagement, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Nii Lante Vanderpuye said “We are safe in Nairobi. We were lucky to escape unhurt today.
We, however, inhaled a bit of teargas. We had to be escorted to a bunker and later to a safer place”.
The protests in Nairobi are part of a larger nationwide demonstration against the Finance Bill 2024, which has sparked outrage across the country.
Demonstrators have been assembling in various counties to show their discontent with the proposed tax increases, which many believe will further burden the already struggling populace.
In the capital, the situation quickly escalated as police forces moved in to disperse the crowds.
Just as in previous protests, tear gas was deployed extensively, causing chaos and panic among the demonstrators.
Additionally, reports have emerged that police fired rubber bullets to disperse young protesters, adding to the tension and violence on the streets.
The protests come on the heels of a night marked bymultiple arrests and abductions. Several prominent social media users and content creators were reportedly captured in overnight operations aimed at defusing the planned demonstrations.
Executive Secretary of the Cement Manufacturers Association of Ghana (CMAG) is taken aback by the move by the Trade Ministry to introduce a Legislative Instrument (L.I) to regulate the price of cement products.
Rev. Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah argues that the Minister’s approach to reducing prices is like putting the cart before the horse.
He asserts that his organization was not consulted about the proposal and is unaware of the contents of the draft document.
“We don’t know anything about it. And with my common knowledge in legislative instruments, don’t you involve stakeholders before it gets to Parliament? Don’t you involve stakeholders in the process?” he quizzed on Tuesday.
This development follows public outcry over the rising prices of the commodity. In response, the Minister introduced a new legislative instrument, which faced strong opposition from the Minority.
The NDC MPs are insisting that the legislative instrument (LI) undergo pre-laying procedures before being formally presented.
During a media engagement Dr. Dawson-Ahmoah criticized the Minister’s approach, arguing that the government should prioritize addressing the underlying economic challenges instead.
He pointed out that the price hike is primarily driven by the depreciation of the local currency.
“Why is the Minister avoiding or just running away from this discussion? Previously, our position has beenthat these prices of cement, the increase of prices of cement, it is not done in a vacuum. It is not done just because we wake up in the morning and do it.
It is as a result of a negative trend in the economy, which is warranting such increases, and that is the issue. And like I said, what is happening now with cement prices is just because of the rapid and consistent depreciation of the cedi against the foreign currencies” he added.

The complaint indicated that some students and staff were demanding and collecting money under the pretense of providing rooms and beds to students.

During the investigation, 32 students were identified as victims, confirming that Appiah and Ansong had collected sums ranging from GH₵2,000 to GH₵2,500 each, promising to allocate them accommodation.
Appiah and Ansong, upon arrest, admitted to the scheme and implicated Dr. Ayeh, stating they were engaged in the accommodation and bed-selling operation together.
The investigation revealed that after assuming office, Dr. Ayeh conspired with Ansong to identify students in need of accommodation. Ansong then informed Appiahto find more students.

Member of Parliament for North Tongu,Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has responded to comments made by former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, about the bidding process for the sale of majority government shares in hotels owned by the state pensions body, SSNIT.
In an interview with Accra-based media house, Blay revealed that his son, in collaboration with a consortium of banks, had placed a bid ranging from US$150 to US$200 million for SSNIT’s shares in a group of hotels.
Blay and his son have consistently denied allegations made by Ablakwa, accusing them of state capture in the acquisition of a portion of the Labadi Beach Hotel beachfront.
Ablakwa, in his response to Blay’s remarks regarding the bid amount, highlighted public records indicating that the eventual successful bidder, Rock City Hotels Limited, had valued SSNIT’s properties at US$61 million.
Rock City Hotels is owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and the Minister of Agriculture.
Ablakwa’s post on social media (June 25) read as follows: “Unending murkiness. We were told Bryan Acheampong offered the highest bid of US$61million; now former NPP Chairman, Freddie Blay also says his 34 year old son offered “150 to 200 million” for the SSNIT hotels.
“Another clear justification for my RTI Request for the tender evaluation report and minutes of tender committee meetings. State Capture shall surely be defeated!”
Last week, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa spearheaded a protest called the #HandOffOurHotelsDemo in Accra.
The demonstrators marched from the Labadi and La Palm Beach hotels, and Ablakwa delivered a 15-point petition to the president, urging the cancellation of the planned sale of these hotels.
The presidency has not yet issued a formal response to the petition.
Additionally, Ablakwa has filed a complaint with CHRAJ against the minister, citing a conflict of interest.

Head of Unicef, Catherine Russell, has described Sudan as one of the most dire places for children globally.
She highlighted that Sudan currently hosts the largest number of displaced children worldwide, with millions suffering from malnutrition and the majority lacking access to education.
Russell is on her way to the war-torn country, which has been ravaged by over a year of intense civil conflict, amidst escalating warnings of an impending famine.
Sudan’s agricultural and food distribution systems have collapsed, exacerbated by restrictions imposed by both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on humanitarian aid deliveries.
Speaking from Nairobi, Russell emphasized the devastating impact of hunger on Sudanese children, noting that nine million children face chronic food insecurity, and nearly four million are experiencing severe malnutrition.
“We’re long past time where we need to act, we need to act now or it’s just going to get worse,” she said.
“You can always eventually make progress on something, so nothing is completely impossible. But for individual babies, for children, who are starving now, who are hungry, who are now severely malnourished, it will be too late for them.”
Earlier this month, the BBC spoke to a food security expert who said that by September, 70% of Sudan’s population will be extremely hungry.
“That could lead to two-and-a-half million deaths, or more” Timmo Gaasbeek said. “It could be as many as four million. There is just not enough food.”
The Sudanese military and RSF have effectively partitioned the nation, precipitating a humanitarian disaster.
The RSF stands accused of rampant resource looting and has maintained a month-long siege on El Fasher, a city housing nearly two million residents.
Ms Russell said she couldn’t speak to whether they were using hunger as a weapon of war. But she said the crisis was “100% man made.”
“The challenge for us is not that we don’t have the food, it’s that we can’t get it to the people who need it. And that is really a crisis.”
Ms Russell said Sudan had the highest number of displaced children in the world – five million – and nearly all of its children were out of school, in danger of becoming a lost generation that could contribute to future instability.
“It’s hard to re-teach them, because that’s a lot of lost learning. But it’s also hard, in many cases, to get them back into the classroom,” she said.
“So in that sense, they can become lost… And if you lose that, what do we think the future is going to be like? It’s going to be unstable.”
She will add her voice to the chorus of demands for an end to the fighting. But a recent UN appeal for calm in El Fasher was ignored, and US efforts to restart peace talks have so far failed.
“There’s limited bandwidth” she said when asked about the lack of persistent international engagement to wrest order from the growing chaos in the strategic African country, citing the conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine and Haiti.
“That’s really the reason I’m going, to try to draw some attention to it and say, we need to focus on this right now. This is quite dire.
“And if we don’t do something, it’s hard to imagine how bad it will be.”
