Some US Airline staff suspended after deplaning 8 black passengers over purported body odour

US Airlines has taken action against several employees following an incident where black passengers were asked to leave a flight due to a complaint about body odour.

The CEO, Robert Isom, addressed the issue in a communication to staff, acknowledging that the incident was unacceptable and that the airline failed to meet its customer service standards.

Three passengers filed a lawsuit in May, accusing the airline of racial discrimination related to the incident on January 5th.

“We are holding those involved accountable, including removing team members from service,” the airline said in a statement.
The company has also announced a number of initiatives aimed at preventing such incidents from taking place, including an “advisory group” focused on the experience of black passengers.

Three men, who were not seated together and unfamiliar with each other, filed a lawsuit in May alleging that every black male passenger on a flight from Phoenix, Arizona, to New York City was asked to disembark. In total, eight passengers were removed from the flight.

“American Airlines singled us out for being black, embarrassed us, and humiliated us,” they said in a statement.
The three men – Alvin Jackson, Emmanuel Jean Joseph, and Xavier Veal – were eventually allowed to re-take their seats on their original flight.

In a letter to employees dated 18 June, Mr Isom said he was “incredibly disappointed by what happened on the flight and the breakdown of our procedures”.

“We fell short of our commitments and failed our customers,” he said.

He stressed the airline’s firm commitment to partnering with civil rights groups like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to restore confidence.

This recent incident isn’t the first time American Airlines has faced allegations of discrimination. In 2017, the NAACP advised African American travelers to consider avoiding the airline due to ongoing complaints of disrespectful and discriminatory behavior.

There were also concerns about a corporate environment that appeared insensitive to racial issues and potentially biased.

Although the advisory was lifted the following year after American Airlines made operational changes, the NAACP issued a warning on June 4th of this year.

They indicated that they might reintroduce their advisory unless the airline swiftly and definitively addressed a January incident.

  • Euro 2024: Gareth Southgate in hot water as England squad families question his decisions

Earlier this month, England arrived in Germany for Euro 2024 with high expectations of winning the tournament at the Olympastadion in Berlin on July 14th.

Despite leading their group, their campaign has faced unexpected challenges, starting with a narrow 1-0 victory over Serbia followed by a frustrating 1-1 draw against Denmark.

According to reports from The Guardian, tensions have surfaced among the players’ families.

Allegedly, after the lackluster draw against Denmark, when the players reunited with their families in Frankfurt, there was palpable tension among them.

Surprisingly, the discord did not stem from the match result itself but rather from concerns that manager Gareth Southgate favors certain senior players over those in better current form.

While the report implies dissatisfaction among players due to perceived biases from Southgate, the reality of his squad selection for the Euros’ 26-man squad paints a different picture.

Notably, Southgate opted to leave out several established names in favor of rising talents such as Adam Wharton, Kobbie Mainoo, Marc Guehi, and Eberechi Eze.

As England prepares for their final group stage clash against Slovenia on June 25th, both the team management and players are focused on moving past any internal tensions and uniting to achieve success in the tournament.

  • TikTok admits to granting US govt a ‘kill switch’

TikTok admits to granting US govt a ‘kill switch’

TikTok revealed that it proposed granting the US government the authority to shut down its platform in 2022, aiming to address lawmakers’ worries about data protection and national security.

This disclosure comes as TikTok and its parent company ByteDance battle against legislation that mandates the app’s ban in the US unless ByteDance sells it.

The legislation was introduced due to concerns that TikTok could potentially share data from its US users with the Chinese government, allegations vehemently denied by TikTok and ByteDance. Both companies are actively urging the courts to invalidate the legislation.

“This law is a radical departure from this country’s tradition of championing an open Internet, and sets a dangerous precedent allowing the political branches to target a disfavored speech platform and force it to sell or be shut down,” they argued in their legal submission.

They also claimed the US government refused to engage in any serious settlement talks after 2022, and pointed to the “kill switch” offer as evidence of the lengths they had been prepared to go.

TikTok says the mechanism would have allowed the government the “explicit authority to suspend the platform in the United States at the US government’s sole discretion” if it did not follow certain rules.

A draft “National Security Agreement”, proposed by TikTok in August 2022, would have seen the company having to follow rules such as properly funding its data protection units and making sure that ByteDance did not have access to US users’ data.

The government’s “kill switch” could have been activated if it violated the terms of this agreement, it asserted.

According to a letter disclosed by the Washington Post, TikTok’s attorney alleges that after proposing new regulations, the US government “terminated all substantive negotiations.”

Dated April 1, 2024, the letter asserts that the government disregarded requests for further discussions and declined an invitation to inspect TikTok’s Dedicated Transparency Center in Maryland.

Legal proceedings at the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia are scheduled for September, involving lawsuits filed by TikTok, ByteDance, and TikTok users.

The lawsuits challenge legislation signed by President Joe Biden in April, which mandates ByteDance to divest TikTok’s US assets by January next year or face a ban.

This legislation was enacted due to concerns that data from TikTok’s 170 million US users could potentially be accessed by the Chinese government.

TikTok has refuted allegations of data sharing with China, calling the legislation an unconstitutional restriction on free speech.

It maintains that US user data remains within the country and is managed by Oracle through Project Texas. However, a Wall Street Journal investigation in January 2024 revealed ongoing data sharing between TikTok in the US and ByteDance in China.

In May, a US government official informed the Washington Post that the proposed solution at the time was deemed insufficient to mitigate serious national security risks.

They added: “While we have consistently engaged with the company about our concerns and potential solutions, it became clear that divestment from its foreign ownership was and remains necessary.”

Hajj pilgrims: Over a thousand people reported dead in Saudi due to extreme heat

Over 1,000 pilgrims have lost their lives during this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia, with temperatures soaring to a sweltering 51.8C in Mecca recently.

Approximately 1.8 million Muslims participated in this extensive, largely outdoor pilgrimage, a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for those who are able.

While the Saudi authorities have not yet provided an official death toll, reports indicate that around 10 countries have collectively reported 1,081 fatalities during the event.

At the Emergency Complex in Mecca’s Al-Muaisem neighborhood, crowds gathered to retrieve the bodies of their loved ones and seek information about missing relatives.

In a poignant scene outside the facility, an Egyptian man collapsed in grief upon learning of his mother’s death.

After an emotional outburst, he composed himself enough to call their travel agent for further assistance.

“He left her to die,” he shouted, referring to the agent. The crowd tried to calm him down.

A spokesperson solemnly announced the names and nationalities of the deceased, including individuals from Algeria, Egypt, and India. Only verified relatives were permitted inside to formally identify their loved ones.

According to an Arab diplomat speaking to AFP, the number of Egyptian fatalities has surged, surpassing 650, with 630 of them being unregistered pilgrims. Each year, tens of thousands attempt the Hajj through alternative means due to financial constraints preventing them from obtaining official permits.

Saudi officials have reported that they have removed hundreds of thousands of unregistered pilgrims from Mecca this month alone.

Out of around 150,000 pilgrims, Pakistan has recorded at least 58 deaths, a diplomat briefed on the tally told AFP. “I think given the number of people, given the weather, this is just natural,” the diplomat said.

Indonesia, which had around 240,000 pilgrims, said the nation’s death toll had reached 183 according to the Ministry of Religious Affairs. They added 313 deaths were due to heatstroke.

More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, including more than 1.6 million from 22 countries (AP)

Khalid Bashir Bazaz, an Indian pilgrim, speaking near the Grand Mosque, said he “saw a lot of people collapsing to the ground unconscious”.

Deaths are not uncommon at the Hajj, There have also been stampedes and epidemics throughout the pilgrimage’s history. Each year, the Hajj draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from low-income nations, and illnesses can spread among the gathered masses, many of whom save their entire lives for the pilgrimage.

More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, including more than 1.6 million from 22 countries, according to the Saudi Hajj authorities.

Saudi Arabia has allocated substantial funds for crowd management and safety measures during the annual five-day pilgrimage, but the large number of pilgrims poses significant challenges to ensuring their well-being.

Due to Islam’s lunar calendar, the Hajj shifts approximately 11 days earlier each year. By 2029, the Hajj will fall in April, and in subsequent years, it will take place during the winter months when temperatures are more moderate.

In 2015, a tragic stampede in Mina during the Hajj resulted in the deaths of more than 2,400 pilgrims, marking it as the deadliest incident ever recorded during the pilgrimage. Despite this, Saudi Arabia has never officially acknowledged the full extent of the tragedy.

Nico Williams earns Man of the Match title after Spain’s 1-0 against Italy in Euro 2024

Spain triumphed over Italy with a narrow 1-0 win in their second Euro 2024 group stage match, largely thanks to the exceptional play of Nico Williams.

The Spanish-born Ghanaian winger earned Man of the Match honors after completing 27 of his 29 passes (93%), making four key passes, and delivering the decisive cross that led to an Italian own goal.

Under De la Fuente’s guidance, Spain dominated the game, with Williams consistently troubling the Italian defense.

He generated one significant scoring opportunity, made eight touches in the Italian penalty area, and successfully completed four dribbles.

Additionally, Williams delivered three precise crosses and won five ground duels.

The game’s lone goal occurred in the second half when Riccardo Calafiori, attempting to clear a Williams cross, mistakenly directed the ball into his own net.

This victory bolsters Spain’s chances of progressing to the knockout rounds, with a final group match against Albania on the horizon.

Williams’ standout performance against Italy continues his recent run of impressive form for Spain.

The 21-year-old has cemented his role as a crucial player for De la Fuente’s squad and appears set to significantly impact Spain’s Euro 2024 campaign.

  • Euro 2024: Security warned to keep Kyle Walker’s mistress miles away from his wife Annie

Euro 2024: Security warned to keep Kyle Walker’s mistress miles away from his wife Annie

England’s security team has been advised to keep Kyle Walker’s former mistress, Lauryn Goodman, away from his wife, Annie Kilner.

Walker, the Manchester City defender, is currently representing his country at Euro 2024, with his wife and their four children traveling to Germany for the matches.

Despite requests for her to stay away, Goodman has also made the trip.

Goodman, an influencer who is set to feature in a WAG-themed documentary, shared on social media that she attended England’s match against Denmark with her son Kairo, who wore a No. 2 shirt with “Daddy” on the back during the 1-1 draw in Frankfurt.

To prevent any unnecessary distractions within the team, security personnel have been instructed to ensure Goodman and Kilner remain apart.

A source has told The Sun: “Lauryn is seen as a bit of a troublemaker and Annie’s worst nightmare was running into her. There was talk of Lauryn’s seats being less than 100 metres away. Annie wants absolutely nothing to do with her.

The security team were aware of Lauryn’s presence and were primed to make sure she couldn’t get anywhere near the Wags’ area. Lauryn is a blagger and a chancer, and they were worried she might be able to talk her way in.

given the sensitivities around it, she was kept well away.”

There were discussions about barring Lauryn Goodman from attending Euro 2024, but she insists that Kyle Walker provided her with tickets so their children could see him play on a big stage.

Walker, a Premier League champion, is focused on mending his relationship with his long-term partner, Annie Kilner, after admitting to poor decisions.

England, currently with four points from their two Euro 2024 matches, are set to play again next Tuesday against Slovenia in Cologne.

As they gear up for the game, the Three Lions squad, along with their families and friends, are preparing for another relocation.

Gideon Mensah names Otto Addo as one of the best coaches he’s ever worked with

Black Stars and left-back for AJ Auxerre, Gideon Mensah has praised Otto Addo as one of the finest coaches he has experienced with the Black Stars.

Mensah worked with Addo when he was an assistant to Milovan Rajevac, during Addo’s one-year stint as head coach leading up to the 2022 World Cup, and now in his current role as the primary coach.

Mensah holds Addo’s tactical approach in high regard, reflecting positively on his time under the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach.

“For me, I think he’s one of the best that I’ve worked with in the national team in terms of tactics and how he wants the team to play.

Obviously, he has always played in the national team before, so he knows what Ghanaians expect and what the team also wants.

But I think coming back again shows that he has sat down to think about what was not right and what was good, what to do next, and what to improve on,” Mensah stated.

Billionaire donates $50m to Trump campaign

Donald Trump’s campaign for the presidency has received a substantial financial boost of $50 million from conservative billionaire Timothy Mellon, according to a federal filing disclosed on Thursday.

The “MAGA Inc” Super-PAC reported raising over $68 million from donors in the previous month to the Federal Election Commission.

Reports has it that Timothy Mellon, who is part of the renowned Pittsburgh Mellon banking family, has contributed $50 million. An additional $10 million was donated by billionaires Liz and Dick Uihlein.

Notably, Mellon made his donation a day after Trump was indicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the hush-money case in New York.

Mellon has also significantly supported independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., donating at least $20 million to the pro-Kennedy Super-PAC American Values.

Super-PACs, or independent political action committees, can collect unlimited funds to back a candidate’s campaign.

This donation has allowed Trump’s supporters to outpace those of President Joe Biden in campaign spending in recent weeks.

Mellon, who resides in Wyoming and is known for his low public profile, is an amateur pilot and has led investments in various transportation companies.

The Mellon family’s net worth is estimated at around $14.1 billion by Forbes.

Black Stars up by four spots in FIFA ranking following recent Mali, C.A.R. win

Ghana has climbed four spots in the latest FIFA rankings following the Black Stars’ consecutive victories in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

This advancement has boosted Ghana to 64th place globally and 12th in Africa, surpassing Cape Verde and Burkina Faso, who had previously ranked higher after Ghana’s 2023 AFCON performance.

Prior to the AFCON, Ghana was positioned 61st in the world and 11th in Africa, according to the September 2023 rankings.

However, the Black Stars’ failure to advance beyond the group stage at the AFCON, with two draws and one loss, impacted their standing.

The recent wins against Mali and the Central African Republic in June have helped the four-time African champions improve their position.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has slipped to fifth place in the African rankings after not securing any wins in their two matches in June.

Morocco continues to lead the African rankings, followed by Senegal, Egypt, and Ivory Coast.

  • Putin cautions South Korea against supplying of arms to Ukraine in war against Russia

Putin cautions South Korea against supplying of arms to Ukraine in war against Russia

Vladimir Putin has cautioned South Korea against supplying arms to Ukraine, labeling such a move as “a big mistake.”

This warning follows Seoul’s consideration of arming Ukraine in response to the newly formed Russia-North Korea alliance, which includes a pledge to support each other against aggression.

Putin indicated that Moscow would take actions “unlikely to please the current leadership of South Korea” if Seoul proceeds with its plan to arm Kyiv. He made these remarks while in Vietnam, following an elaborate visit to North Korea where he signed a mutual defense agreement with Kim Jong Un.

Furthermore, Putin threatened that Moscow might provide military assistance to Pyongyang should the US and its allies persist in arming Ukraine.

“Those who supply these weapons believe that they are not at war with us. I said, including in Pyongyang, that we then reserve the right to supply weapons to other regions of the world,” Mr Putin said.

Seoul had earlier condemned the Russian-North Korean agreement as a threat to its national security, and national security adviser Chang Ho-jin had said his country planned to “reconsider the issue of arms support to Ukraine”.

In response to President Putin’s statements, South Korea’s presidential office announced on Friday that it is considering “various options” for supplying arms to Ukraine, noting that their decision will “depend on how Russia approaches this issue.”

Additionally, South Korea summoned Russian ambassador Georgy Zinoviev to express strong disapproval of the military agreement with North Korea, urging Moscow to “immediately cease” its cooperation with Pyongyang.

This development follows a pledge of mutual support between Putin and Kim Jong-un against perceived aggression, with China playing a significant role in their growing alliance. Despite South Korea providing humanitarian aid and military equipment to Ukraine, it has refrained from sending lethal weapons due to its policy against arming nations at war.

Some in Ukraine hope that the military collaboration between Russia and North Korea might prompt South Korea to reconsider its stance.

During Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, Kim Jong-un expressed “full support” for Russia’s actions in Ukraine. There is mounting evidence that North Korean missiles are already being used by Russia in the conflict.

John Kirby, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, commented on the Russian-North Korean pact, stating it should “concern any country that values peace and stability.”

He added that the agreement was “no surprise” as the US had been alerting the international community about the developing defense relationship between the two nations for months.

Japan also voiced its concerns, with government spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi labeling the agreement “unacceptable” and expressing alarm that President Putin did not rule out military technology cooperation with North Korea.

Analysts warn that this treaty could have significant global and regional consequences. Not only might North Korea openly arm Russia, but Russia could also become involved in any new conflict on the Korean peninsula.

Tensions remain high between the two Koreas, which are technically still at war and maintain a heavily fortified border.

Recently, North Korean troops briefly crossed the border into South Korea on Thursday, retreating after warning shots were fired.

This incident marks the third such occurrence in less than three weeks, with South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff suggesting the previous incidents appeared to be accidental.

  • Serbia threaten to quit Euro 2024 over “kill the Serbs chant” by Croatia, Albania fans

Serbia threaten to quit Euro 2024 over “kill the Serbs chant” by Croatia, Albania fans

Serbia has issued a strong ultimatum regarding their participation in Euro 2024, demanding that UEFA address the offensive chants and behavior from Croatia and Albania supporters.

Tensions escalated during the recent group stage matches, where chants like “kill, kill, kill the Serbs” were reportedly heard from the stands.

This has deeply unsettled Serbia, prompting them to threaten withdrawal from the tournament unless UEFA takes decisive action.

The incidents marred the atmosphere as Croatia and Albania faced each other in the ongoing European Championship. Offensive songs and gestures were observed among the fans, actions that Serbia finds unacceptable and detrimental to the spirit of the competition.

In a separate incident, a Kosovan journalist was banned for the remainder of Euro 2024 for making provocative gestures towards Serbian supporters during a match against England.

The Serbian FA is now calling for more action, with general secretary Jovan Surbatovic saying: “What happened is scandalous and we will ask UEFA for sanctions, even at the cost of not continuing the competition.

We are sure that they will be punished, because they have already responded to our appeal to remove the so-called journalist from Albania from the championship.

We will request UEFA to punish the federations of both selections. We don’t want to participate in that, but if UEFA doesn’t punish them, we will think about how to proceed.

We were punished for the cases of fishing and our fans behaved much better than the others. One fan was fined for racist abuse and we don’t want it to be attributed to others.

We Serbs are gentlemen and we have an open heart, so I appeal to the fans to remain gentlemen.”

Serbia faced a challenging start in Group C of Euro 2024, encountering a tight 1-0 loss against England. The decisive goal came from Jude Bellingham, the celebrated Real Madrid player, securing victory for his team.

Serbia’s upcoming match is scheduled for Thursday at the Allianz Arena in Munich, where they will clash against Slovenia in their next fixture.

  • FDA celebrates Supreme Court verdict on celebrity alcohol  ban, says it’s a victory for public health

FDA celebrates Supreme Court verdict on celebrity alcohol  ban, says it’s a victory for public health

Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has hailed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the ban on celebrities in alcohol advertisements as a major win for the public and the health of Ghanaians.

Speaking during a media engagement Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at FDA, Joseph Benneh, stated that “this is a victory for all Ghanaians and a victory for public health and safety”.

According to him, “there is not much to celebrate actually. It is just that we are contributing to the health and safety of the people of Ghana and we are happy the Supreme Court sees eye to eye with us”.

This comes after Celebrities in Ghana challenged the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in court over a ban on their advertising for alcoholic companies.

The case began on November 11, 2022, when artiste manager Mark Darlington Osae sued the FDA, arguing that the ban violated equality and discriminated against the creative industry.

However, the Supreme Court  on Wednesday June 19, 2024 ruled in favour of the FDA where it upheld the Authority’s 2016 guidelines, which bars celebrities and popular figures such as musicians among others from promoting alcohol products.

Manager of the musical duo Reggie N Bollie, Mr. Osae, in reaction contended that the directive discriminates against celebrities and breaches constitutional rights.

He sought the court’s interpretation of articles 17(1) and 17(2) of the constitution, aiming to overturn the FDA’s directive on the grounds of discrimination.

Nonetheless, in a 5-2 majority decision, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, upheld the FDA’s guidelines as constitutional.

Meanwhile, FDA’s Joseph Benneh commended the manager and all other celebrities who partnered with him to seek legal clarity and  redress over the ban.

” It is just not about celebrities but of course, they find themselves within that space and did the right thing in going to court to seek clarification and confirmation as to whether what we are doing is within the context of the constitution” he stated.

  • 10 companies have submitted bids for the Saglemi Housing Project – Oppong-Nkrumah announces

10 companies have submitted bids for the Saglemi Housing Project – Oppong-Nkrumah announces

Ten international and local companies have shown interest in completing the Saglemi Housing Project, the Minister of Works and Housing  according to Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.

He mentioned that these companies had visited the project site to inspect the existing work and they are currently  preparing their proposals, which are expected to be submitted by July 8, based on the Ministry’s work plans.

The Minister made the disclosure during a press conference at the Parliament House in Accra, on June June 20, 2024 .

    Once the proposals are received by the Ministry an independent evaluation entity would be put in charge to scrutinise and present reports based on which the government would award the mandate to a befitting bidder to complete and operationalise the project;

He explained that the government initially borrowed around $200 million to construct 5,000 housing units, of which only 1,506 are partially finished and can be seen at the Saglemi site.

He pointed out that the project is missing three essential components: water supply, electrical infrastructure, and sewage systems.

An evaluation by the Ghana Institute of Surveyors estimates that an additional $100 million is needed to complete these 1,506 units.

Due to financial limitations, Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah emphasised that it is difficult for the government to secure an extra $100 million after having already invested $200 million in the project.

The Minister went on to explain that given the current financial challenges, it became necessary that “Cabinet took a decision that we should select a private developer or a consortium of private developers and let them invest in it so that we can operationalise it”.

However, the evaluation reports that will be presented by the independent entity that would scrutinse the bids would be published for transparency, the Minister said .

“We are committed to every single bid that we are receiving, eventually we will publish every single bid, we will also publish the evaluation report so that you see for yourselves how the various bids were evaluated.”

“So, everything is being done above board, so everybody can have confidence that it will stand the test of time,” he noted.

  • Man Utd, Nice owner Ratcliffe bemoans UEFA rules barring player transfer among the two clubs

Man Utd, Nice owner Ratcliffe bemoans UEFA rules barring player transfer among the two clubs

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has revealed that UEFA’s regulations on multi-club ownership have hindered the club from acquiring a player from Ligue 1 team Nice.

Ratcliffe’s company, INEOS, acquired Nice in 2019 and later secured a minority stake in Manchester United earlier this year.

Although transferring players between clubs with shared ownership isn’t outright banned, the qualification of both Nice and Manchester United for next season’s UEFA Europa League has complicated their ability to engage in transfer dealings with each other.

UEFA rules state: “No individual or legal entity may have control or influence over more than one club participating in a UEFA club competition,” with control defined as: “Being able to exercise by any means a decisive influence in the decision-making of the club.”

Sources have it that United were interested in signing Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

“They’ve said we can sell him to another Premiership club, but we can’t sell to Manchester United,” Ratcliffe, who did not name the player in question, said in an interview with Bloomberg. “But that’s not fair on the player and I don’t see what that achieves.”

Sources have told ESPN that United have decided that Erik ten Hag will stay on as manager after a season in which the club recorded its lowest ever Premier League finish but won the FA Cup.

Ratcliffe said that he is more focused on creating the right “environment” at the club, rather than personnel, as he attempts to take United back to the summit of English and European football.

“The coach isn’t the central issue at Manchester United,” the INEOS boss said. “It’s a sports club. It needs to be competitive, it needs a degree of intensity, but with a supportive side to it because you are dealing with players who are relatively young. It hasn’t had that type of environment historically.”

Ratcliffe expressed his support for Manchester City after the club launched legal action against the Premier League over Associated Party Transaction rules (APT).

The Premier League’s APT rules, originally introduced in 2021 following the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover of Newcastle United, were tightened in February in an attempt to regulate clubs signing lucrative sponsorship deals with companies linked to their owners.

“I can understand why they are challenging it,” Ratcliffe said. “You can understand why they would say that they want an open market, free market.”

The Labour Party has committed to establishing a new football regulator if they win the upcoming UK general election. This regulator would aim to impose stricter controls on club spending to prevent financial mismanagement and protect the interests of fans.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe voiced his opposition to the proposed legislation and also criticized the “anchoring” system that Premier League clubs plan to test next season.

The “Top to Bottom Anchoring” system restricts spending to a multiple of the lowest projected combined prize money and TV rights revenue a team is expected to earn.

“If you’ve got a government regulator at the end of the day they will regulate and that won’t be good,” he said.
    “‘What would anchoring do?’

It would inhibit the top clubs in the Premiership. The last thing you want in the Premiership is for the top clubs in the Premiership not to be able to compete with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG.”

  • Bawumia engages churches because the Muslim community’s vote can’t assure him victory – Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib

Bawumia engages churches because the Muslim community’s vote can’t assure him victory – Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib

Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, defended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s visits to churches despite being a Muslim.

In an interview with GHOne TV on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, Sheikh Shaibu characterized the Vice President’s participation in church activities and interactions with Christians as a strategic political maneuver.

He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia recognizes the electoral landscape in Ghana, where he needs broader support beyond the Muslim community to secure victory in the upcoming December 7, 2024, election.

Sheikh Shaibu pointed out that similar cross-community engagements are common among politicians of different faiths seeking broader voter support, suggesting that such actions are part of the political process and should be accepted as such.

“He (Dr. Bawumia) is employing political tactics. Dr. Bawumia knows that even if all Muslims in this country vote for him, he cannot win the election. True or false? True. So politically, it doesn’t make sense to be on one side,” he said.

“So, he’s engaging in politics, and people must view him from the angle of his political strategy to be able to get the vote from every corner. And like all politicians do, they come to Muslims, and some of them will come to the Chief Imam and request prayers from him,” he said.

The Chief Imam’s spokesperson also indicated that there is nothing wrong with pastors praying for the Vice President.

“Chief Imam lays hands on politicians. He lays his hands on politicians, and it’s in the pictures; people know. When I meet the Chief Imam and Muslim and Christian politicians, they squat and give their heads to him to hold and pray. It is because of how they see him, but it doesn’t make them less Christian,” he noted.

  • Euro 2024: My nose is broken – Switzerland’s Fabian Schar minutes after role in Scotland goal

Euro 2024: My nose is broken – Switzerland’s Fabian Schar minutes after role in Scotland goal

Switzerland’s Fabian Schar (32) sustained a broken nose during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Scotland at Euro 2024, adding to a night of misfortune as he had inadvertently contributed to Scotland’s goal earlier in the match.

Nineteen minutes into the game, Schar collided with Scotland’s Anthony Ralston, requiring medical attention for both players, who continued to play through the remainder of the intense match in Cologne.

This incident occurred just six minutes after Schar’s error, which allowed Scotland to take the lead.

Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer was set to catch a goal-bound shot from Scott McTominay, but Schar’s intervention deflected the ball into the net. Initially recorded as an own goal, the goal was later credited to McTominay.

The Swiss team, favored to win and secure a spot in the next round with a game to spare, faced an unexpected setback due to these events.

“My nose is broken,” Schar told Swiss broadcaster Blue Sport. “There were a lots of tackles and duels, as we expected. They made it extremely difficult for us.”

Switzerland equalised in the 26th minute with a spectacular strike from Xherdan Shaqiri and had plenty of chances to go ahead but were frustrated repeatedly by the indomitable Scots, who were fighting for a chance to reach the knockout rounds of a major tournament after failing in their last 11 attempts.

Schar has endured plenty of rough and tumble, breaking his nose in 2018 and suffering concussions in 2019, 2022 and 2023, two of those on duty for his English side Newcastle United.

“I will feel it more tomorrow,” he said of his latest injury. “It was an intense game for everyone. That brought out my passion a little. That’s part of it. It’s fun too.”

France’s Kylian Mbappe also suffered a broken nose during his first Euro 2024 match and will be wearing a protective mask in the upcoming games.

The Swiss team has not yet provided an update on Schar’s injury or confirmed whether he will participate in the crucial final Group A match against host nation Germany on Sunday.

“We’re past this” – Son accepts apology of teammate for racist remark

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min (31) has forgiven teammate Rodrigo Bentancur (26) following an apology from the Uruguayan, who made controversial remarks about South Korean people during a television appearance.

In a brief video shared on social media from the Uruguayan television program Por La Camiseta, host Rafa Cotelo asked Bentancur for a Spurs player’s jersey.

Bentancur responded by saying, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too, they all look alike.”

Bentancur publicly expressed regret for his remarks last week.

“I’ve spoken with Lolo (Bentancur),” South Korea captain Son said in a post on Instagram.

“He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised. Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all.

“We’re past this, we’re united, and we will be back together in pre-season to fight for our club as one.”

In a separate statement on Thursday, Tottenham said it would provide further education to all players “in line with our diversity, equality and inclusion objectives”.

“We fully support that our captain Sonny feels that he can draw a line under the incident and that the team can focus on the new season ahead,” Spurs added.

Juventus, Lazio race for Man Utd’s Mason Greenwood – Source

Lazio is facing competition from Juventus in their pursuit of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, according to reports.

Discussions have commenced between Lazio and United regarding a potential deal for Greenwood, who spent the previous season on loan with Getafe.

United is seeking to reach an agreement on a transfer fee around £30 million ($38.1 million), although it is anticipated that this could involve several performance-related bonuses.

A year ago, Lazio came close to securing Greenwood on loan before Getafe intervened. According to a source, United prefers negotiating a permanent transfer this summer rather than another loan arrangement.

Apart from Lazio and Juventus, other Serie A clubs, including Napoli, have also expressed interest in the 22-year-old forward.

There has also been attention from clubs in Spain, Portugal, and Germany.

Sources revealed that Greenwood and his family are open to another move abroad as he continues to rebuild his career.

The striker has not featured for United since January 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape and assault, with the case being dismissed in February 2023.

In February, new United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe hinted that Greenwood could potentially revive his career at Old Trafford.

However, sources informed ESPN that a return to United is currently considered the least likely scenario this summer.

Greenwood impressed during his loan spell at Getafe last season, scoring 10 goals. Despite Getafe’s interest in bringing him back to the club, they are unable to meet United’s financial demands.

Leicester names Steve Cooper as new manager after Enzo Maresca

Leicester City has appointed Steve Cooper as their new first-team manager on a three-year deal, the club announced on Thursday.

Cooper, who steered Nottingham Forest to the Premier League in 2022, takes over from Enzo Maresca. Maresca left Leicester to join Chelsea as head coach in May, having guided Leicester to promotion from the Championship last season.

“I am really excited and proud to be appointed Leicester City’s first-team manager,” Cooper said of his appointment. “This is a fantastic club with a rich history and passionate supporters.

I am excited to work with such a talented squad and I’m looking forward to the challenge of achieving our shared ambitions in the Premier League.”

“We are delighted to welcome Steve to Leicester City. His vision for the team, including his ability to develop players and implement a dynamic style of play, is very much aligned with our aspirations for the club,” Leicester City Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said.

Cooper was dismissed by Forest in December 2023 following a string of five defeats in six matches.

Forest appointed Nuno Espírito Santo as his replacement as they managed to stay in the Premier League despite a points deduction for breaching financial regulations.

Leicester, meanwhile, are dealing with their own financial issues after being referred to an independent commission by the Premier League in March over alleged breaches.

The club has initiated legal action against the Premier League and Championship in response.

  • Sudan accuses UAE of contributing to the civil war by supplying arms

Sudan accuses UAE of contributing to the civil war by supplying arms

Sudan has leveled accusations against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for allegedly supplying arms to a paramilitary force involved in the country’s ongoing 14-month civil conflict, sparking a contentious debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Sudan’s UN ambassador, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, accused the UAE late on Tuesday of providing weaponry to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been engaged in combat with Sudan’s military since April 2023 and faces allegations of committing ethnic-based war crimes.

The Sudanese envoy asserted that Khartoum possesses evidence of these arms transfers and intends to submit a dossier on the UAE’s actions to the International Criminal Court.

Addressing reporters post-meeting, he emphasized urging the council to take decisive action, including public condemnation of the United Arab Emirates.

Sitting next to Mohamed at the horseshoe-shaped Security Council table, UAE Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab called Sudan’s charge “ludicrous” and designed to distract from “grave violations that are happening on the ground”.

    Last stronghold

“If they seek an end to the conflict and civilian suffering, then why won’t they come to the Jeddah talks? Why are they blocking aid? What are you waiting for?” Abushahab asked.

In May, the United States and Saudi Arabia sought to resurrect ceasefire talks in Jeddah that stalled last year due to alleged violations of agreements on both sides. Sudan, however, refused to participate.

Aid agencies, which have warned that Sudan is on the brink of the world’s largest hunger crisis, have said aid is being blocked by all of the warring factions in the country.

In January, a UN report compiled for the UNSC said it had “credible” evidence that the UAE had sent weapons to the RSF “several times per week” via Amdjarass in northern Chad. The UAE denied the accusation.

Since the escalation of tensions between Sudanese armed forces and the RSF into full-scale conflict last year, more than 14,000 lives have been lost, with 33,000 people injured and 10 million displaced, according to the United Nations.

The dispute arose at the UN on Tuesday amid warnings from UN Assistant Secretary-General Martha Pobee about ethnic-based atrocities in Darfur, western Sudan.

Pobee emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, which is under siege by the RSF. She called for measures to prevent further atrocities, protect essential infrastructure, and alleviate civilian suffering.

El-Fasher, home to 1.8 million people, is the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region, infamous for genocide and war crimes dating back two decades.

The RSF, initially formed by Arab militias, is accused of killing up to 300,000 members of Black ethnic minority groups and displacing millions.

Last week, the UN Security Council approved a resolution demanding that the RSF end its siege of el-Fasher and withdraw all fighters threatening the safety and security of civilians.

Media outlets shared visuals showing expended artillery shells that landed in residential areas.

Another resident recounted the tragic death of a shopkeeper neighbor, struck by a shell during the incident.

“Loud blasts woke us up,” resident Moustapha Adoum Mahamat told Reuters via telephone.

“Our house was shaking as if someone were shooting at us. Then we saw a big fire at the military camp and smoke and things exploding in the air,” he said. “We could see artillery fly over us.”

According to a Reuters witness, flames and explosions persisted for approximately an hour, with smoke spreading throughout the city.

The fire originated a short distance from Chad’s primary international airport, which authorities confirmed remained unaffected by the incident.

Double standard, arrogance! – Paul Kagame slams the West of double standards on democracy

On Monday, Rwandan President Paul Kagame criticized Western nations for exhibiting “double standards” on democracy, just ahead of the country’s upcoming general elections next month.

President Kagame, who has led Rwanda since 2000, made these comments in response to a question regarding accusations from critics that he is holding onto power.

“Democracy is about freedom of choice. If that is the case unless the definition has changed over time, I have never known of any place where democracy has succeeded when principles and ideals have been dictated from the outside,” Mr Kagame said, speaking in an interview on national television.

“They say you have been there too long, but that is none of their business … Rwandans are the ones to make those choices. They have the freedom to do it. But you find that in most cases, the complaints are from outside. These are double standards; it’s even arrogance,” he said.

President Kagame’s remarks followed the National Electoral Commission’s decision to approve him and two other candidates for next month’s presidential election.

Running as the candidate of the ruling Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), Kagame will face Frank Habineza of the opposition Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana.

Kagame emphasized the importance of considering the unique political context of each country, noting that perspectives on democracy will differ. He questioned whether the form of democracy practiced in Rwanda truly contradicts the general concept of democracy.

“Some of these countries have strict rules, and they don’t want anybody to interfere in their politics, but they find it easy to get involved in other people’s politics. What sense does it make?”

”If interfering in other people’s affairs is wrong, what gives you the right to go and get involved in other people’s affairs … Some of them are leaders of their own countries in spite of their very low ratings. But that is democracy I’m told,” he added.

Rwandans are set to vote for their president and members of parliament on July 15.

  • Ghana sees demotion as it moves from grade ‘C’ to ‘D’ in World Bank’s latest assessment

Ghana sees demotion as it moves from grade ‘C’ to ‘D’ in World Bank’s latest assessment

Ghana has dropped further from the grade “C” it scored in 2021 on the independence of its Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) i.e., the Auditor General’s Office to a “D” in the latest World Bank assessment covering the period 2023 to 2024.

According to the World Bank’s Independence and Accountability in Governance report, which evaluates the independence of Ghana’s SAI and the audit recommendation follow-up process, Ghana received a score of 6.5 (a “D”) using the InSAI methodology.

This marks a significant drop from the “C” grade (8.0-8.5/10) Ghana achieved in the 2021 Global Synthesis Report by the World Bank.

The “D” rating suggests moderate SAI independence, indicating that while some independence indicators were met, there is substantial room for improvement.

The assessment, based on benchmarking against international standards and practices, offers recommendations for enhancing the independence of Ghana’s SAI.

Ghana is urged to establish clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to clarify the audit recommendation follow-up processes for all stakeholders. Additionally, it is recommended to provide Internal Audit Units (IAUs) with necessary training, office equipment, and relevant tracking databases to improve their effectiveness.

The report also highlights the issue of non-implementation of audit recommendations.

“There is the need to refocus attention on all types of audits as required by the laws of Ghana, to encourage and promote probity and accountability in governance and the deployment of limited public resources in the best interest of the public.

The PFM Act, 2016 (PFMA) Act 921 places the responsibility of audit follow-up on Audit Committees, Internal Audit Agencies, Spending Officers, and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Despite the legal requirements, audit recommendations are not effectively followed up on or tracked.’, the World Bank asserts.

The assessment finally calls for Spending Officers to undertake a root cause analysis of audit issues and communicate these clearly to enhance understanding and increase the likelihood of resolution of identified infractions and/or irregularities.

“I didn’t come to hurt anyone” – Snippet of Adakabre interview with late LaBianca CEO

Broadcaster Adakabre Frimpong Manso has aired the first three-and-half minutes of an audio recording of the late Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Labianca Company Limited, Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh.

In the audio, aired on the Wednesday, June 19, 2024, edition of his programme on Neat FM, the late businesswoman shared details of her journey to becoming a multimillionaire frozen foods importer from a humble beginning as a pure water seller at the Tema Harbour.

“I went to the harbour in 1978 as an iced water seller. In our time, there was nothing like ‘Slay Queen,’ so you had to work hard. I am the type that likes living; I was born with it, so I tried to work in order to cater to my lifestyle.

“After completing my education, I went to the harbour and served traders coming from Kumasi, Dunkwa, Nkawkaw, and others. I was named ‘Small Girl’ due to my size,” she stated.

She noted that at the time, only the State Fisheries Company and Mankoadze Fisheries Limited were importing frozen foods into the country.

Through diligence, Madam Asomah-Hinneh said she learned a lot about the business and later had the opportunity to travel abroad, where she built contacts.

“I didn’t stay long; I returned to continue working at the harbour. I didn’t come to hurt anyone. I traveled with the objective of searching for suppliers, so when I returned, I knew what I was coming to do — I met fish suppliers and chicken suppliers,” she stated.

She revealed that her journey into entrepreneurship brought her challenges in the form of instigated media attacks.

“I started experiencing troubles a little after I began working. The trials I went through were that I would get up one day, and I had been handed over to a newspaper to be dealt with. I went through tribulation for 13 years.

“Sometimes, I was compelled to ask myself whether I should stop the work or continue. But I also realized the business was booming because of the quality of products my suppliers were bringing me,” she stated before Adakabre ended the broadcast of the tape.

Last week, Adakabre announced his intention to release segments of the mentioned recording.

He revealed that the audio is from an interview with Eunice Buah conducted in August 2023.

Recalling the events, Adakabre stated that he was at home when Eunice Buah called him, requesting a meeting at her residence.

Following her instructions, Adakabre arrived without his car.

Upon reaching her home, the Neat FM broadcaster was led to her bedroom, where she confided in him, recounting various events for over an hour.

After the recording, Adakabre claims Eunice Buah instructed him not to broadcast the tape but to keep it until after her death.

Following her passing on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Adakabre expressed uncertainty about what to do with the audio he had kept.

Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh, owner of Labianca Company Limited, a leading frozen food importer in West Africa, died on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

According to reports Eunice Buah, a Western Regional representative on the Council of State, died after a brief illness.

Additional reports indicate that she had recently returned to Ghana after undergoing medical treatment abroad.

Leaked IG tape: Committee submits report to parliament

Special parliamentary committee, headed by Samuel Atta Akyea, the MP for Abuakwa South, has submitted its report to Parliament on the investigation of a leaked audio tape allegedly conspiring to remove Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

This committee, formed by Speaker Alban Bagbin, was established in response to widespread national concern following the leak.

The report, which includes the committee’s examination of the audio conversations and any subsequent recommendations, was presented to Parliament, representing a significant development in this prominent inquiry.

The leaked audio involved senior police officers and Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), discussing plans to remove the IGP.

The committee’s report was officially laid before Parliament on Tuesday, June 18, with the Clerk of Parliament stating, “The report of the Special Committee of Inquiry into the contents of a leaked audio tape of a high-ranking police officer and others in an alleged conspiracy to remove the current Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and related matters has been duly presented.”

The submission of the report is anticipated to shed light on the incident and inform Parliament’s actions regarding the findings.

The demonstration was needless – NPP’s Nana Akomea on Ablakwa led #Handsoffourhotels demo

Spokesperson and communications director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea has downplayed the essence of the #Handsoffourhotels demo which was held yesterday June 18, 2024 at the Labadi Beach Hotel.

Organized by North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the protest aimed to oppose the sale of Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) 60% stake in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Member of Parliament for Abetifi Bryan Acheampong.

Ablakwa cited lack of due process and violation of procurement procedures in the sale.

However, member of Dr Bawumia’s campaign communications team member, believes the protest was unnecessary as the North Tongu MP had already presented the case to Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

It is an independent government agency in Ghana responsible for promoting and protecting human rights, investigating complaints of human rights violations, and addressing issues related to administrative justice.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show on Tuesday June 18, 2024 Nana Akomea stated that “I mean the case is with CHRAJ hence I don’t see the need for a demonstration. You have gone ahead to organise a demonstration when the case is still in the hands CHRAJ”.

According to him, the discontent, strife, and anger surrounding the Rock City Hotel owner’s purchase of shares in the Labadi Beach Hotel are due to his political affiliations.

He cited an expectation of a different reaction if the purchaser had been someone politically neutral or of a different political persuasion.

“I accept that the person who won the bid for the shares in the hotel sis the problem now. Because whatever you do Bryan is a senior member of the party. Hence assets owned by SSNIT being sold to him would become a problem because he is politically exposed.

When he is taken out, we have to look at the objective figures”.

Derailing Ablakwa’s claims of lack of transparency and murky in SSNIT dealings with Bryan’s Rock City Hotel, Akomea believes that “good look at SSNIT approach and mechanism of dealing with this sale is so transparent”.

Hajj: Hundreds of pilgrims loose their lives over extreme heat – Reports

Reports from various sources indicate a significant death toll, primarily attributed to scorching temperatures during this year’s annual Muslim pilgrimage(Hajj) to Mecca.

According to diplomats speaking to French news agency AFP, at least 550 pilgrims have lost their lives, with Egyptians constituting the majority of the deceased, mainly succumbing to heat-related illnesses.

The pilgrimage, which commenced last Friday, has been marred by various incidents including stampedes, tent fires, and other accidents, resulting in numerous fatalities over the past three decades.

Saudi state TV reported temperatures soaring to 51.8 degrees Celsius (125.2 Fahrenheit) in the shade at the Grand Mosque in Mecca on Monday.

Recent studies underscore the growing risks posed by rising global temperatures during the Hajj.

A 2024 study published in the Journal of Travel and Medicine warns that climate change may surpass current heat management strategies.

Additionally, a 2019 study from Geophysical Research Letters highlights increased temperatures in arid Saudi Arabia, posing severe dangers to pilgrims.

Tragically, Tunisian sources report the deaths of 35 citizens, many due to extreme heat, while families continue to search for missing relatives in Saudi hospitals.

Jordan has issued 41 burial permits for its deceased pilgrims, primarily from heatstroke cases.

Iran reported 11 fatalities and hospitalized 24 pilgrims, although the causes of death were not disclosed.

Three Senegalese citizens and 144 Indonesians have also lost their lives during this year’s pilgrimage, with Indonesian health ministry data confirming the deaths without specifying the exact causes.

  • Russia-North Korea to partner against ‘any enemy’ in event of attack in new level ties – Putin

Russia-North Korea to partner against ‘any enemy’ in event of attack in new level ties – Putin

Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia and North Korea have elevated their relationship to a “new level,” committing to mutual assistance in the event of an attack, marking a “breakthrough” partnership.

This declaration came during the Russian president’s rare visit to North Korea.

As Putin commenced his first visit to North Korea in 24 years, thousands of North Koreans lined the city’s broad streets, chanting “welcome Putin” and waving Russian and North Korean flags, along with bouquets of flowers.

The visit featured a meticulously arranged display of influence in the authoritarian state.

During the visit, the two leaders signed a new strategic partnership agreement, replacing previous deals from 1961, 2000, and 2001, as reported by Russian state news agency TASS.

He said the deal encompasses the “political, trade, investment, cultural spheres, and the security sphere as well,” calling the pact “truly a breakthrough document.”

Putin said joint drills involving the United States, South Korea and Japan were “hostile” toward North Korea,” characterizing the US policy as “confrontational.”

Kim, meanwhile, called the new “alliance” a “watershed moment in the development of the bilateral relations.”

But the deal between the two autocrats raised many questions, too – including whether Russia’s nuclear deterrent now extends to North Korea, and vice versa, or whether the two nations will now hold joint military drills.

Putin received an enthusiastic welcome during a ceremony at Kim Il Sung Square in North Korea’s capital, where mounted soldiers, military personnel, and children with balloons cheered under large portraits of both leaders.

They introduced their respective delegations and stood side by side as the Russian national anthem played. Later, they rode together in an open-top limousine, smiling and waving to the crowds.

The event underscored North Korea’s close ties with Moscow and likely served as a reminder to the West of Putin’s enduring influence, despite global criticism following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The partnership holds significance for Russia as well. While several governments have accused Pyongyang of supplying arms to Moscow during its conflict in Ukraine, both countries have consistently denied these allegations, despite substantial evidence suggesting otherwise.

On Wednesday, Putin gifted Kim an Aurus car during their exchange of presents, as reported by Russian state media. This marks the second time Putin has bestowed this model upon his North Korean counterpart.

Additionally, Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov mentioned that the Russian leader also gave Kim a tea set. Ushakov didn’t specify what gifts Putin received but described them as “also good gifts.”

Putin arrived in North Korea early on Wednesday local time, exactly 24 years after his last visit to Pyongyang.

The visit underscores the deepening alignment between the two nations amidst shared hostility towards the West and growing concerns over their enhanced military cooperation on the international stage.

Before their talks commenced, Kim expressed his full support and solidarity with the Russian government, military, and people. He specifically referenced Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, emphasizing their efforts to safeguard sovereignty, safety, and territorial stability.

“Situations continue to be complicated and ever-changing, but I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that we will continue to strengthen and closely engage in strategic communication with the (Russian) leadership,” Kim added.

Putin hailed the countries’ ties as based on “equality and mutual respect,” and said an expected new bilateral agreement would “form the basis of relations between the two states for many years to come,” according to Russian state agency TASS.

He also added that he hoped Kim would visit Moscow for their next meeting.

The burgeoning relationship has sparked concern in both Seoul and Washington, not only over North Korea’s arms transfers to Russia, but also the prospect of Moscow transferring its superior military technology to aid Pyongyang’s heavily sanctioned weapons program

  • I swear I will be faithful; I will obey – Ramaphosa’s pledge at inauguration for second term

South Africa has entered a “new era,” announced President Cyril Ramaphosa as he was inaugurated for his second full term.

Despite the African National Congress (ANC) not achieving a parliamentary majority in last month’s election, Ramaphosa remains in power.

The ANC formed a coalition with its long-time rival, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and other parties to govern. In his inauguration speech, Ramaphosa commended this coalition but cautioned that failure to address deep inequalities could lead to instability in the country.

“Through the ballots that they have cast, the people of South Africa have made plain their expectation that the leaders of our country should work together,” President Ramaphosa, 71, said solemnly.
“They have directed their representatives to put aside animosity and dissent, to abandon narrow interests, and to pursue together only that which benefits the nation.”

Among those in attendance were the leaders of Nigeria, Angola, Zimbabwe, Congo-Brazzaville, and Eswatini, who gathered in the Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre outside the Union Building in Pretoria. A large crowd assembled outside the government’s official seat, waving national flags.

Under a crisp blue winter sky, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo administered the oath of office to President Cyril Ramaphosa. This event marks a significant moment for South Africa, highlighting Ramaphosa’s journey from union leader to mine boss to president, and underscores the unity deal as a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

“I swear I will be faithful to the Republic of South Africa… I will obey, observe and uphold the constitution and all other laws of the republic,” the president said.

A band performed the national anthem, followed by a 21-gun salute and an army helicopter fly-past. The African National Congress (ANC), which has ruled since the end of apartheid in 1994, lost its majority for the first time after the May 29 election yielded no clear winner.

The ANC secured 40% of the vote, a 17 percentage point drop, losing 70 seats in parliament. Lawmakers re-elected Mr. Ramaphosa after the ANC formed a power-sharing agreement with the pro-business Democratic Alliance (DA), which received 22% of the vote, and three smaller parties.

The DA, the ANC’s main new governing partner, holds free-market ideologies that conflict with the ANC’s social welfare traditions and is often perceived as serving the interests of the white minority, an allegation it denies. Despite their differences, both parties are united in their goal to repair the country’s infrastructure, ensure basic services like water and power, and create jobs.

This coalition represents a shift towards the political center, as the ANC’s left-wing and populist breakaway factions declined the invitation to join a national unity government.

In his address, Mr. Ramaphosa assured South Africans that the coalition is dedicated to reducing inequalities and fostering economic growth. He also highlighted the stark divisions between the affluent and the impoverished within the country.

Despite progress, “our society remains deeply unequal and highly polarized,” he said.

“There are toxic cleavages and an incipient social fragmentation that can easily turn into instability.”
And he warned against “those who seek to stand in our way, to inflame tensions” and “undermine our institutions.” They will not succeed because South Africans are resolute, he said.

Mr Ramaphosa did not say to whom he was referring. But the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party formed six months ago by former President Jacob Zuma didn’t attend what it called the “farcical” inauguration.
The party, which won 15% of votes and obtained 58 parliamentary seats, also boycotted parliament’s first sitting last Friday.

It has since joined a counter-coalition of opposition parties, vowing to oppose the policies of what Mr Zuma described as an “unholy alliance” between black and white elites to benefit the markets, not the people.
It “must be crushed before it finds its feet,” he said, “in the streets, in the courts and in parliament.”

MK has stated that its protests will be peaceful, though concerns remain that Mr. Zuma’s stance could incite violence among his supporters, who previously instigated deadly riots in July 2021 following his imprisonment for refusing to testify at a public inquiry into corruption during his presidency.

President Ramaphosa is expected to appoint a cabinet in the coming days, incorporating members from the DA and three other smaller parties, collectively holding 68% of the parliamentary seats. Following this, the president is anticipated to outline policies aimed at reviving the struggling economy.

The coalition faces several challenges, including potential ideological clashes within the alliance, dissatisfaction from left-wing elements within the ANC, and the threat of volatile political opposition. Despite these obstacles, many South Africans are hopeful for the coalition’s success.

“This is a moment when we must choose to either move forward together,” Mr Ramaphosa said “or risk losing all we have built.”
The former trade unionist and business tycoon first became president in 2018 when his predecessor, Mr Zuma, was forced to resign because of corruption allegations. Mr Zuma has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Mbappe to wear mask in subsequent games after breaking nose, likely to miss Netherlands game

France captain Kylian Mbappe (25) sustained a broken nose late in his team’s 1-0 Euro 2024 victory over Austria on Monday, the French Football Federation confirmed after the match.

The injury occurred when Mbappe collided with Austrian defender Kevin Danso’s shoulder while contesting a header.

He was substituted shortly before the end of the game and transported to the hospital in an ambulance for X-rays.

“Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second half of the Austria v France match this Monday in Duesseldorf,” a statement from the federation said.

“The captain of the French team was first taken care of by the medical staff and doctor Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed a broken nose.

The diagnosis was confirmed during radiological examinations at the Duesseldorf hospital.

“Kylian Mbappe has returned to the base camp of the French team. He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately.”

France face the Netherlands on Friday and Mbappe is now a doubt for that clash—a huge blow for France.

“A mask will be made so as to allow the number 10 of the French team to consider resuming competition after a period devoted to treatment,” the FFF said.

  • I’m getting better in my pairing with Jude Bellingham; it’d get better – Phil Foden

I’m getting better in my pairing with Jude Bellingham; it’d get better – Phil Foden

After a shaky start to England’s European Championship campaign that had critics questioning his starting spot, Phil Foden (24) insists his partnership with Jude Bellingham (20) will only flourish.

Foden was a headliner this past Premier League season, pouring in 27 goals for Manchester City across all competitions to win Premier League Footballer of the Year honours.

But lining up on the left of a front three in England’s 1-0 win over Serbia, with Jude Bellingham occupying the central No. 10 position in which Foden has thrived with City, he drifted out of the game.

“Jude’s obviously an exceptional talent,” Foden said in a Football Association video. “He’s a leader now; I think he’s turning into a leader. I think our link-up play is good at times and I think it’s improving as well, and can keep getting better. So he’s an exciting talent and I enjoy playing with him.”

While some chalked up Sunday’s performance as just a bad game for Foden, it drew criticism from some pundits.

“I don’t think Phil Foden played well, he didn’t get into it,” former England striker Ian Wright said on the BBC match broadcast. “People talk about Foden and his positions. I can understand that because of how good he is as a footballer, but he didn’t get into the game.

“We can’t always blame the system. He needs to make it happen for himself and demand the ball,” Wright said.

Former Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas said players with Foden’s talent have the quality to hold the ball anywhere on the pitch.

“It’s about: do you want it enough to make a difference and hold the ball for your team? Do you want to make things happen? Do you enjoy getting the ball under pressure?” he said. “I think players like Foden, they need to step up.”

Foden, whom City manager Pep Guardiola has described as the “most talented player” he has ever seen, struggled during his European Championship debut three years ago as well and was taken out of the team after England’s opening two games.

His performance at the 2022 World Cup was notably different. He made his first appearance as a 71st-minute substitute against Iran.

He then scored in England’s 3-0 victory over Wales and provided assists for goals by Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka in their 3-0 win over Senegal in the round of 16.

“I think the first game of a major tournament is always the most difficult,” Foden said of the Serbian win that England nearly blew with a nervy second half. “Obviously, we had to defend at times and dig deep.

“But I think that shows a different side to us and if we’re going to win something, I think that we have to do that.”

England, who sit atop Group C, face Denmark on Thursday in Frankfurt and close out the group stage against Slovenia on June 25th.

Be happy you have this star on your team – C.K. Akonnor to Kudus critics

Former Black Stars head coach, C.K. Akonnor, has acknowledged that West Ham midfielder Mohammed Kudus is Ghana’s biggest star player and that we should be happy to have him in the Black Stars.

He said this on the sidelines of the 2024 Euros viewing party held at the German Ambassador to Ghana’s residence in Accra in an interview .

After addressing the future of the Black Stars and his future in coaching after not serving in a head coaching role since leaving the Black Stars job, Akonnor spoke on Mohammed Kudus’ importance to Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team.

“He is our star and we can’t argue about that. He is our star, he is the person making waves as far as Ghana soccer is concerned and there is nothing wrong with that.

He is a good player, a young chap who has developed from youth to this level and so we should be happy to have somebody like him.”

In his debut season with West Ham, Kudus produced 18 goals and seven assists in 48 appearances; he finished second in West Ham’s Player of the Season Award voting.

Kudus recently played in Ghana’s 2-1 win over Mali and 4-3 win over Central African Republic in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Kobbie Mainoo addresses rumours surrounding his interest to play for Ghana

England and Manchester United rising star Kobbie Mainoo has revealed the thought process behind his decision to choose between representing Ghana or England.

The 19-year-old, born in England to Ghanaian parents, had a breakthrough season under United manager Erik Ten Hag, appearing in 32 matches across all competitions and scoring 5 goals.

His impressive performances attracted interest from both the Ghana Football Association and the England Football Association, with Mainoo ultimately opting to play for England.

After making his competitive debut for England in their 1-0 victory over Serbia in the Euro 2024 opener, Mainoo explained the factors that influenced his choice.

Brussels declines to host the Belgium-Israel match over anticipated protests

The municipal government of Brussels has declared that hosting an upcoming UEFA Nations League match between Belgium and Israel in the city is unfeasible due to security concerns and the anticipated likelihood of protests.

“The city of Brussels considers it impossible to organise a Belgium-Israel match in the King Baudouin Stadium,” a statement said.

“After a careful and in-depth analysis, we must conclude today that the announcement of such a match in our capital in these particularly troubled times will undoubtedly lead to large demonstrations and counter-demonstrations, jeopardising the safety of spectators, players, Brussels residents and our police forces.”

The match is set to take place on September 6.

Global demonstrations in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza have prompted protests in Belgium as well.

Pro-Palestinian activists have organised demonstrations and sit-ins at universities, prompting some Belgian universities to partially or completely sever ties with Israeli institutions.

  • Messi names Sergio Ramos as fiercest rival in El Clásico

Messi names Sergio Ramos as fiercest rival in El Clásico

Lionel Messi recently reflected on his intense rivalry with Sergio Ramos during their time facing off in El Clásico matches in Spain.

Messi, who played for Barcelona, often clashed with Ramos, the stalwart defender of Real Madrid, in heated encounters.

Despite their fierce competition on the pitch, their dynamic shifted unexpectedly when they became teammates at Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

In an interview on his nephew’s YouTube show, Messi recalled their battles, saying, “We fought a lot with Sergio Ramos.

In the Clásicos, we always had intense confrontations before becoming teammates.” Ramos, in turn, has praised Messi as “the best player football has ever produced.”

Meanwhile, Ramos’ recent departure from Sevilla was confirmed by the Spanish club on Tuesday.

The veteran defender, 38, returned to his childhood club last summer after a stint with PSG, where he scored seven goals in 37 appearances.

Despite turning down an extension with Sevilla, Ramos emphasised that he has no intention of retiring and remains eager to continue playing for at least another one or two years.

Ramos, a decorated player with Spain, including a World Cup and two European titles, is now rumoured to be considering a move to Major League Soccer (MLS), where he could potentially face off against Messi once again.

Messi, now captain of Argentina, joined Inter Miami in the MLS in July 2023 following the expiration of his contract with PSG.

“I haven’t taken a decision yet,” Ramos said. “I have not signed anything with any club. Fortunately, I have interesting options. I’ve earned the right to decide my future and that of my family.”

Ramos recently travelled to Dallas to support Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic during the NBA finals, leading to speculation that he could join an MLS club after leaving Sevilla.

“I am a great fan of the NBA and I have a good rapport with Luka Doncic from our time at Real Madrid,” Ramos said. “But I didn’t go to Dallas because of anything relating to my future.

The USA has always attracted me because of the quality of life but that has nothing to do with taking a big decision.”

Kobbie Mainoo speaks on Ten Hag’s coaching tactics

Kobbie Mainoo expressed his satisfaction with Erik ten Hag remaining as Manchester United manager, highlighting that it provides players with a sense of stability and confidence moving forward.

Following a successful season that culminated in winning the FA Cup and ending on a positive note, Ten Hag’s retention ended speculation after the club considered other managerial options like Thomas Tuchel,, Gareth Southgate, Mauricio Pochettino, and Thomas Frank.

Mainoo, who made significant strides in his career last season, including his Premier League and England debut, looks forward to continuing under Ten Hag’s leadership and aims for more silverware in the upcoming season.

“I’m so grateful to him that he put so much trust in me and believed in me to play on the team and I can’t thank him enough.”

Mainoo made his first appearance as a late substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 Group C win over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen after opting to turn down an approach from Ghana to represent the birthplace of his parents.

ESPN reported in February that Southgate was considering fast-tracking Mainoo through England’s ranks as a result and the 19-year-old said: “I am proud of my Ghanaian heritage and there was speculation, but, yeah, it has always been a dream to play for England.

I am happy to be here. It was considered, but I wanted to play for England.”

Mainoo also reserved praise for Declan Rice, who has become a pivotal midfielder for Arsenal and England following his £105 million ($133m) move from West Ham last summer.

“Dec is such a good player, so reliable and dominant in midfield,” he said.

“When I get to play next to him, it is always a joy to have someone so strong on the ball next to you and you can always trust him no matter where you are on the pitch.”

“I think he is worth every penny, he is such a good player. He has proved that in the Prem and at the international level.

Kantamanto ‘the official suppliers’ for Ghana Amputee team jerseys – Richard Obeng

Coach of Ghana’s amputee football team, the Black Challenge, Richard Obeng, revealed the team encountered difficulties during their successful run at the 2024 African Amputee Football Cup of Nations (AAFCON).

Obeng highlighted a major hurdle they faced before departing: a shortage of jerseys. This compelled the team to acquire a new set from the well-known Kantamanto market.

“The jerseys we wore to participate in the AAFCON were bought at Kantamanto. This was not catered for,” Coach Obeng stated during an interview with Starr FM.

The coach highlighted the limited sponsorship received, which covered only tickets and the participation fee, leaving the team without provisions for accommodation.

“The hotel in which we slept for the tournament was taken care of by the local organizing committee. We did not even have camping.

From our budget, we never received anything except the participation fee, which was $8,500,” he explained.

Coach Obeng also addressed the need for financial accountability, a sentiment echoed by the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif.

Despite the challenges, the team remains committed to transparency and responsible management of funds.

“It’s not my private team or a private club. We are aware that one day we will have to account.

In 2021, when we travelled with our own money, we still have an account of that on our record, right? But nobody asked us to bring our expenditure,” he concluded.

  • Mortgage, new management – Saddick Adams explains Essien’s alleged bankruptcy

Mortgage, new management – Saddick Adams explains Essien’s alleged bankruptcy

Reports have surfaced clarifying that the Accra High Court’s order to auction two properties belonging to former Ghanaian international Michael Essien is not directly linked to his personal financial hardships.

According to a disclosure by Dailyguidenetwork.com on Monday, June 17, 2024, the Commercial Division of the Accra High Court mandated the sale of Essien’s properties situated at Stephen Quarshie Crescent, East Legon, House Number 9, and House Number 204/205, Trassaco (Phase 2) Adjiringano, all in Accra.

While the specifics of the court proceedings remain murky, Kickgh.com’s report hinted at Essien grappling with financial challenges, including unresolved loans.

However, sports presenter Saddick Adams, popularly known as Sports Obama, shed light on the situation during his evening sports show on Angel FM on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

Adams clarified that while the factual basis holds, Essien’s decision not to contest the lawsuit is primarily a strategic one rather than a direct result of financial difficulties.

The journalist disclosed insider information, indicating that the legal dispute began about five years ago when Essien faced legal action for defaulting on mortgage payments for the properties.

Despite being named as the principal defendant, Adams explained that custody of the houses had been transferred under the management of Essien’s wife.

“Essien has not taken out a loan. It is being reported that he is in debt due to several loans, but the truth is that it is a mortgage he signed while he was playing and was paying in bits.

Then it got to a point where payment was not coming through as it was supposed to. So the property owner or the bank that financed it decided that they wanted to take it back, so it is not a loan.

“Essien also left the house in the care of his wife, Akosua Puni. He had no interest in it as his property, and so the control was left in someone else’s care who was expected to continue with the payment of the mortgage,” the journalist said.

Despite initial suggestions of financial challenges, Sports Obama clarified that the former footballer, Michael Essien, is currently in a stable financial position. According to him, Essien possesses numerous properties in Ghana and Europe.

Obama further explained that Essien’s decision not to contest the lawsuit was not driven by financial distress. Instead, he emphasised that Essien is actively interested in selling the properties, considering the costs associated with the mortgage.

“According to a close friend of Essien who also had a property in the same area, the cost of the mortgage shot up while property prices in the area have also gone up.

“So when the case went to court, he allowed for the property to be sold and took his share to buy a new one at a different location. That is more advisable than paying, say, a hundred thousand pounds every year on the mortgage,” he said.

  • Essien, Asamoah Gyan,Muntari other footballers who have lost properties in legal battles

Essien, Asamoah Gyan,Muntari other footballers who have lost properties in legal battles

For several Ghanaian football stars, their post-career lives have been marked by legal battles resulting in substantial financial setbacks.

Once celebrated for their prowess on the field, these former athletes have seen their investments dissipate due to disputes with business associates, former spouses, and even former teammates.

These losses have arisen from a range of factors, including failed entrepreneurial ventures and issues arising from personal relationships and marriages.

Here are five Ghanaian football stars who have lost monies or properties due to court rulings:

    Sulley Ali Muntari

In 2019, a Milan court ruled that Ghanaian football star Sulley Muntari owed over $100,000 to Italian businessman Rodrigo Renato Gianno.

According to a Ghanasoccernet report in 2022, despite agreeing to settle the debt, Muntari failed to do so, prompting the businessman to travel to Ghana and file a case against him at the Accra High Court.

The businessman’s aim was to enforce the Milan court’s order and ensure Muntari fulfilled his financial obligations.

The debt arose during Muntari’s tenure at Milan, where he had engaged the businessman to arrange plane tickets and accommodations for him.

    Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan’s financial woes stem from two significant legal disputes.

The first involves a lengthy legal battle over the annulment of his marriage to Gifty Gyan, resulting in substantial losses.

The High Court ordered Gyan to transfer ownership of a house in the United Kingdom and a four-bedroom house in Spintex, Accra, to his ex-wife. He was also required to relinquish ownership of a gas filling station and two cars to her.

Furthermore, Gyan has been making monthly alimony payments of GH₵25,000 to his former wife.

    Arthur Moses

In 2014, Arthur Moses, a former Ghanaian football star, faced upheaval in his marriage, leading to the loss of the majority of his assets to his ex-wife, Patience Arthur, amid a contentious divorce.

Following prolonged legal battles, the Supreme Court of Ghana ruled in favor of Patience Arthur. She was awarded GHS 1 million (about USD 160,000) in alimony and gained possession of Moses’ houses, cars, and businesses as part of the settlement.

    Michael Essien

The ex-Chelsea midfielder is the most recent Ghanaian football star facing substantial legal setbacks, set to forfeit several properties.

According to a report from Daily Guide on June 15, two houses owned by the iconic midfielder will be auctioned to settle debts owed to multiple creditors and institutions.

The auctioneer has estimated the value of one of the properties to be between $20 million and $30 million.

    John Mensah

In 2014, John Mensah, a former Ghanaian football captain, divorced his wife Henrietta.

The Accra High Court, under Justice Doris Bempong, mandated Mensah to fulfil financial obligations and transfer designated properties to her.

Recently, in 2022, Henrietta revealed that Mensah purportedly sold the properties in question.

Despite initially complying with alimony payments, Mensah has reportedly ceased making them.

  • 500,000 immigrant spouses to be granted legal status – Biden announces

500,000 immigrant spouses to be granted legal status – Biden announces

President Joe Biden has introduced a new policy aimed at shielding hundreds of thousands of undocumented spouses of US citizens from deportation, according to officials in his administration.

Immigration has emerged as a significant challenge for Mr. Biden in this election year, prompting him to issue a broad executive order aimed at reducing the influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border.

Under the new policy, undocumented spouses who have lived in the US for at least 10 years will be permitted to work legally.

The White House estimates that more than 500,000 spouses will benefit from this initiative.

Addressing a gathering at the White House on Tuesday, President Biden emphasised that this measure aims to make the US immigration system fairer and more just, benefiting immigrants, married couples, and all Americans.

Recent polls indicate that immigration remains a top concern for many voters leading up to the presidential election in November.

The White House also expects the new policy to extend benefits to approximately 50,000 young individuals under the age of 21, whose parents are married to American citizens.

This move represents the most significant relief effort for undocumented migrants already residing in the US since the Obama administration introduced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) in 2012.

“The action I’m announcing today will go into effect later this summer,” Mr Biden said at the White House.

“The steps I’m taking today are overwhelmingly supported by the American people, despite what the other team says,” he added, a reference to Republicans.

The White House announcement coincided with the 12th anniversary of Daca, which protected over 530,000 migrants brought to the US as children – known as Dreamers – from deportation.

Senior administration officials stated on Monday that undocumented spouses of US citizens would qualify if they had resided in the country for 10 years and were married as of June 17.

Those eligible will have three years to apply for permanent residency and can obtain a three-year work permit.

On average, the White House estimates that eligible individuals have been in the US for 23 years, with a majority born in Mexico.

They will be granted “parole in place,” allowing them to stay in the US while their status is adjusted.

NumbersUSA, an organisation advocating for stricter immigration controls, criticised the new policy as “unconscionable.”

The organisation’s chief executive, James Massa, said in a statement: “Rather than stopping the worst border crisis in history, President Biden has overreached his executive authority to use an unconstitutional process, circumventing voters and their elected representatives in Congress, to send a message that amnesty is available to those who enter illegally into the United States.”

Alex Cuic, an immigration lawyer and professor at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, told the BBC that while the action affected a “narrow group”, it marked a “start” for a segment of the US immigrant population that historically would face complications normalising their status in the country, even when eligible.

“A good majority of them [would have] to leave the country in order to come back lawfully,” he said. “It’s like they physically enter the US, but their immigration ‘soul’ doesn’t come with them.”

By permitting beneficiaries to parole in place, Mr. Cuic emphasised that officials are eliminating the necessity to separate families when one spouse must leave the country to apply for lawful permanent residence.

A senior administration official indicated on Monday that the application process is expected to open by the end of the summer.

The White House is also preparing to streamline and expedite the visa process for highly skilled undocumented immigrants who have obtained degrees from US universities or received job offers in their fields, including Dreamers.

Mr. Biden’s announcement follows his recent issuance of a comprehensive executive action allowing US officials to swiftly deport migrants entering the US illegally without processing their asylum claims.

The White House clarified that this action will occur once a daily capacity threshold is reached and the border becomes “overwhelmed.”

Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued the Biden administration, arguing that the action violates US immigration law.

During the announcement, Mr. Biden urged those who find the measure “too stringent” to “exercise patience.”

“[In] the weeks ahead, I will speak about how we can make our immigration system more fair and just,” he said.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy director at the American Immigration Council, said that while the two announcements “don’t intersect with each other at all,” the more recent action may help the administration “get some positive headlines after the pushback” they received over the border announcement.

“The Biden administration has been receiving a lot of flak from people saying that their focus has all been on new arrivals, when there are so many long-term undocumented immigrants stuck trying to navigate our complicated immigration system,” he added.

“I think the actions you’ve seen the president take over the last few weeks really go towards addressing both those concerns,” Mr Reichlin-Melnick added.

  • Nvidia now world’s most valuable company, with a market valuation of $3.34tn

Nvidia now world’s most valuable company, with a market valuation of $3.34tn

Nvidia surged to become the world’s most valuable company on Tuesday, reaching a new all-time high in its share price.

Closing at nearly $136, up 3.5% for the day, Nvidia’s market capitalization now surpasses that of Microsoft. This milestone follows its earlier overtaking of Apple’s valuation earlier this month.

Specialising in computer chips crucial for artificial intelligence (AI) software, Nvidia has enjoyed robust sales and profits driven by soaring demand for its products in recent years.

Investors are optimistic about its future earnings potential, propelling its share price to new heights, although some have raised concerns about its lofty valuation.

With Tuesday’s rally, Nvidia is now valued at $3.34 trillion (£2.63 trillion), nearly doubling its value since the beginning of the year.

Just eight years ago, the company’s stock was trading at less than 1% of its current price.

In the competitive landscape of AI development, Nvidia stands out as a dominant player, commanding the majority share of the AI chip market.

This competitive advantage positions Nvidia favourably in the eyes of investors, who anticipate continued growth in its market value based on strong sales and profit performance that consistently surpasses analyst expectations.

In May, after its latest set of financial results were published, Quilter Cheviot technology analyst Ben Barringer said the company had “once again cleared a very high hurdle.”

“Demand is showing no signs of switching off either,” he added.

However, not everyone shares the same optimism.

Back in February, Barclays credit analyst Sandeep Gupta expressed caution, suggesting that Nvidia might struggle to sustain its substantial market share amidst growing competition. He also raised concerns about the profitability of Nvidia’s customers in monetizing AI software.

What does ‘broke’ mean to Michael Essien? He owns mansions in Europe – Saddick Adams

Ace sports broadcaster Saddick Adams, also known as Sports Obama, has refuted claims of a “fall from grace” concerning Chelsea legend Michael Essien following a recent court ruling.

Speaking on the Angel Sports show, Saddick Adams provided a detailed account of Michael Essien’s involvement in the situation.

Sports Obama explained that during his playing career, Essien made substantial investments in real estate and other ventures, which now sustain him in retirement.

He highlighted that Essien’s real estate portfolio includes mansions in England and Spain, which are rented out and sold at high prices.

Adams clarified that the two houses being auctioned due to the court ruling were properties Essien had bought on mortgage, managed by his wife, Akosua Puni.

“Essien owns numerous properties in London. During the Roman Abramovich era, Chelsea players were encouraged to buy houses in Cobham, one of the most expensive areas in London, reserved for millionaires.

The house is a large mansion valued at millions of dollars.

“Essien was not particularly concerned about the house. He has many properties in Spain and England; his mother even stayed there. Those who claim he is bankrupt do not understand Michael Essien.

What does ‘broke’ mean to Michael Essien?” he questioned.

Following reports about two houses owned by Chelsea legend Michael Essien being listed for sale, Sports Obama’s statement has gained attention.

According to a report from Dailyguidenetwork.com, the properties are located at Stephen Quarshie Crescent, East Legon, House Number 9, and House Number 204/205, Trassaco (Phase 2) Adjiringano, all in Accra.

An auctioneer, who spoke anonymously, confirmed receiving directives from the Deputy Sheriff of the High Court to sell these properties.

The auctioneer estimates that one of the properties is valued between $20 million and $30 million.

Locked-up Investment Holders’ Forum to resume picketing today

Members of the Locked-up Investment Holders’ Forum will resume their picketing at the Finance Ministry today, Wednesday, June 19, due to the ministry’s failure to engage with them as previously promised.

The investors had submitted a petition to the Finance Ministry, seeking assurances that would enable the Bank of Ghana to release funds locked up in defunct finance houses.

Dr. Adu Anane Antwi, the convenor for the forum, stated that the absence of meaningful engagement with the Finance Ministry has left them with no other option but to take to the streets.

Dr. Antwi emphasised that their decision to resume picketing is a direct result of the ministry’s lack of responsiveness.

“We will be resuming our picketing this Wednesday, as the meeting that was promised by the Deputy Minister for Finance, Dr Stephen Amoah, with us after he returned from his trip on May 27, 2024, has still not come on.

“I sent the Deputy Minister a text message and a WhatsApp message last Thursday reminding him that we are still waiting for him to call us for the meeting.”

  • Supreme Court to announce verdict on FDA ban of celebrity alcohol advertisements today

Supreme Court to announce verdict on FDA ban of celebrity alcohol advertisements today

Supreme Court will deliver its judgement on the case filed by Mark Darlington Osae challenging the ban on celebrities appearing in alcoholic advertisements.

The seven-member panel of the apex court has previously deferred its judgement twice, most recently on May 8, 2024.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) issued a directive prohibiting celebrities from endorsing alcoholic beverages.

This measure aims to prevent minors from being influenced by celebrities to consume alcohol.

Mark Osae, manager of Reggie ‘N’ Bollie and Skrewfaze, filed a writ at the Supreme Court on November 11, 2022, contesting the FDA’s 2015 regulations as discriminatory against the creative arts industry.

Osae, who is also a music publisher at Perfect Note Publishing, seeks to have the Supreme Court invalidate the FDA’s regulation.

Mr. Osae, the Chairman and Co-Founder of the Ghana Music Alliance, stated that the FDA directive, which ordered that “no well-known personality or professional shall be used in alcoholic beverage advertising,” is inconsistent with and in contravention of Articles 17(1) and 17(2) of the 1992 Constitution.

Mark Darlington Osae argues that Articles 17(1) and 17(2) of the 1992 Constitution guarantee equality before the law and prohibit discrimination based on social or economic status and occupation, making the directive null, void, and unenforceable.

Before Osae took the matter to the Supreme Court, several stakeholders in the creative industry, such as Wendy Shay, Shatta Wale, Brother Sammy, Kuami Eugene, and Camidoh, voiced their opposition to the directive and urged its repeal.

The FDA’s directive prevents celebrities from promoting alcoholic beverages through any medium. This policy is part of the Ghanaian government’s efforts to shield children and young people from alcohol advertising.

However, Osae contends that this child protection measure would deny the entertainment industry valuable income opportunities.

In his writ filed on November 11, 2022, Osae claims that certain aspects of the FDA’s 2015 regulations discriminate based on economic status and occupation, among other factors.

The artist, manager, and music publisher are thus asking the Supreme Court to declare unconstitutional the guidelines stipulating that “No well-known personality or professional shall be used in alcoholic beverage advertising.”

    Reliefs Sought:

    (a) A declaration that, on a true and proper interpretation of Articles 17(1) and 17(2), which guarantee equality before the law and prohibit discrimination against persons on grounds of social or economic status, occupation, among others, Guideline 3.2.10 of the Guidelines for the Advertisement of Foods published by the 1st Defendant on February 1, 2016, which provides that “No well-known personality or professional shall be used in alcoholic beverage advertising,” is discriminatory, inconsistent with, and in contravention of Articles 17(1) and 17(2) of the 1992 Constitution, and thus unconstitutional.

    (b) A declaration that, on a true and proper interpretation of Articles 17(1) and 17(2), Guideline 3.2.10 of the Guidelines for the Advertisement of Foods published by the 1st Defendant on February 1, 2016, which prohibits well-known personalities and professionals from advertising alcoholic products, is inconsistent with and in contravention of Articles 17(1) and 17(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantee equality before the law and prohibit discrimination against persons on grounds of social or economic status, occupation, among others, and consequently null, void, and unenforceable.

    (c) An order striking down Guideline 3.2.10 of the Guidelines for the Advertisement of Foods published by the 1st Defendant on February 1, 2016, as being inconsistent with and in contravention of the letter and spirit of the 1992 Constitution, and as such nullified.

    (d) An order of perpetual injunction restraining the Defendants, their agents, servants, or assigns under the pretext of acting under Guideline 3.2.10 of the Guidelines for the Advertisement of Foods published by the 1st Defendant on February 1, 2016, from doing anything to prevent any well-known personality or professional from advertising alcoholic products.

Video: Watch as police sprayed pepper spray on #HandsOffOurHotels protesters

A near-peaceful protest against the sale of Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong, turned chaotic due to an altercation between police and demonstrators.

Some protesters were pepper-sprayed and tear-gassed by law enforcement officers.

A video sighted online shows an officer raising his hand above a human shield created by the police and releasing pepper spray into a crowd of advancing protesters.

The exact cause of the protesters’ aggressive behaviour towards the police is unclear. However, the lead convenor of the demonstration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is also the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, accused the police of acting in bad faith.

“The police demonstrated bad faith, and I have told the regional police commander, ‘You don’t invite me to your office on June 12, and we agree on the route, modalities, and terminating point. You told me clearly that it would end at Christ the King Parish, and it was communicated to the demonstrators,’” he told Starr News in an interview.

According to the North Tongu MP, things could have been worse if the protesters had not demonstrated maturity in response to the unnecessary provocation by the police.

“Only God knows what would have happened. I have told the police hierarchy that when we return to parliament, they will receive a nice message from us about why they demonstrated such bad faith and why they engaged in the needless provocation,” Mr. Ablakwa added.

Mr. Ablakwa further stated that the minority would utilise parliamentary processes to hold the Ghana Police Service accountable.

  • Jakpa admits recorded AG audio was doctored

Jakpa admits recorded AG audio was doctored

Third accused in the ambulance case, Richard Jakpa, has admitted that the audio recording of his conversation with the Attorney General (AG), which is in circulation and was presented as evidence, is doctored.

He confirmed in open court that the recording, submitted by the accused as Exhibit 10, does not capture the full conversation.

Jakpa stated that only the parts of the conversation that would support their case were included.

Earlier, the Court had admitted an audio recording into evidence, capturing a conversation between Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the case.

Dr. Ato Forson, the current Minority Leader in Parliament, and businessman Richard Jakpa face allegations of deliberately causing financial loss to the state amounting to 2.37 million euros through the procurement of ambulances.

Both have pleaded not guilty and are currently awaiting trial.

Mr. Jakpa is expected to endure a thorough examination from the Prosecution, anticipated to last at least five hours, in accordance with the Case Management Completion plan.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal filed by the legal representative of Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, against an Accra High Court’s decision to dismiss an application for mistrial in the ambulance trial.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, presiding over the ambulance trial, ruled that the application filed by former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was not tenable.
