  • Wikileaks founder Assange leaves UK after his release under a plea deal with US authorities

Wikileaks founder Assange leaves UK after his release under a plea deal with US authorities

After a prolonged legal battle spanning several years, Wikileaks has announced that its founder Julian Assange has departed the United Kingdom following a negotiated agreement with American authorities.

Under this deal, Assange, aged 52, has agreed to plead guilty to charges related to conspiracy in the acquisition and disclosure of national defense information.

The United States has long contended that Wikileaks’ disclosures, which included sensitive details about the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, posed significant risks to lives.

Assange had been held in a British prison for the past five years, contesting efforts by the US to extradite him.

Reports from CBS, the BBC’s US affiliate, indicate that Assange will not serve any additional time in US custody, and his detention period in the UK will be credited towards any sentence. According to information from the justice department, Assange will be returning to Australia.

Wikileaks confirmed via X, formerly known as Twitter, that Assange departed from Belmarsh prison on Monday after spending 1,901 days confined in a small cell.

He was then “released at Stansted airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK” to return to Australia, the statement added.

Video shared online by Wikileaks appear to show Assange, dressed in jeans and a blue shirt, being driven to Stansted before boarding an aircraft.

The BBC has been unable to independently verify the video.

His wife, Stella Assange, tweeted thanks to his supporters “who have all mobilised for years and years to make this come true”.

An agreement, where he will admit to a single charge, is set to be formalized in a Northern Mariana Islands court on Wednesday, June 26. These Pacific islands, part of the US commonwealth, are significantly nearer to Australia than federal courts in Hawaii or the mainland US.

Agence France Press quoted a spokesperson for Australia’s government as saying that the case had “dragged on for too long”.

Richard Miller, Assange’s attorney, refrained from providing any comments when approached by CBS. The BBC also sought input from his legal representative based in the United States.

Throughout the legal proceedings, Assange and his legal team consistently argued that the charges against him were driven by political motives.

In April, US President Joe Biden acknowledged that he was reviewing a request from Australia to dismiss the prosecution against Assange.

In a significant development the following month, the UK High Court granted Assange permission to launch a fresh appeal against extradition to the US.

This decision allows him to challenge the assurances provided by US authorities regarding the conduct of his potential trial and the protection of his freedom of speech rights.

After the ruling, his wife Stella told reporters and supporters that the Biden administration “should distance itself from this shameful prosecution”.

US prosecutors had originally wanted to try the Wikileaks founder on 18 counts – mostly under the Espionage Act – over the release of confidential US military records and diplomatic messages related to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Wikileaks, which Assange founded in 2006, claims to have published over 10 million documents in what the US government later described as “one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States”.

In 2010, the website released a video filmed from a US military helicopter that depicted the deaths of over a dozen Iraqi civilians, including two Reuters journalists, in Baghdad.

Chelsea Manning, a prominent collaborator with Assange, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking classified documents. Her sentence was later commuted by then-President Barack Obama in 2017.

Apart from his involvement in the leaked video, Assange also faced legal accusations of rape and sexual assault in Sweden, which he consistently denied.

To avoid extradition to Sweden, Assange sought asylum in Ecuador’s London embassy, where he remained in hiding for seven years. He argued that extradition would lead to subsequent extradition to the US for his involvement in the leaked materials.

In 2019, Swedish authorities dropped their investigation into the allegations, citing the passage of time since the initial complaint.

However, UK authorities subsequently arrested Assange for failing to surrender to the courts during the extradition proceedings to Sweden.

Throughout these prolonged legal battles, Assange has maintained a low profile and has reportedly experienced deteriorating health, including suffering a minor stroke while in prison in 2021.

Krachi West Hospital threatens a close down of mortuary, other units over dumsor

Krachi West Municipal Hospital in the Oti Region is currently grappling with severe challenges caused by frequent power disruptions plaguing its operations.

Dr. Hilarious Gadze, the Medical Superintendent, revealed that the hospital has incurred nearly GH₵70,000 in fuel expenses to keep generators running amidst the ongoing power outages.

The situation has escalated to the point where hospital management has issued a stark warning: continued power failures could compel them to close essential facilities such as the mortuary.

This potential closure would have profound repercussions for the local community, as the hospital serves as a crucial lifeline for numerous residents.

Beyond financial strain, the power cuts have severely impacted the hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality medical care. Vital medical equipment remains inoperable, hindering their capacity to provide essential treatments.

Dr. Gadze emphasized the critical need for a reliable electricity supply to sustain the hospital’s healthcare services effectively.

As the crisis intensifies, he expressed concerns about the hospital’s future viability, highlighting the looming possibility of having to shut down vital services if the power situation does not improve.

In addition, Administrator Raphael Tumawu informed Adom News that the persistent power challenges have significantly affected the hospital’s financial stability.

Recent power outages have led to the malfunction of recently repaired air conditioners and critical sterilization equipment in the theatre, further complicating medical operations.

Mr. Tumawu urged NEDCO and other relevant authorities to swiftly intervene to safeguard the hospital’s financial health and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for patients in need.

NDC pledges a $500m allocation in fight against ‘galamsey’

Special Aide to NDC flagbearer John Mahama, Joyce Bawa-Mogtari, emphasized in an interview with Evans Mensah on PM Express that should their party secure victory in the upcoming election, they plan to allocate a substantial $500 million towards tackling the persistent issue of illegal mining, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey’.

She stressed the critical nature of this problem and underscored their commitment to deploying further governmental funds to effectively combat it.

The former Deputy Transport Minister said, “John Mahama actually said in his speech at the University of Mines and Energy, for example, that at least $500 million will be deployed first into research to get data and of course using modern technology.”

“Everybody’s interested in this conversation…there is something that modern technology does for us. It makes things much easier and presents a better photograph and actually satisfies something that humans cannot do,” she explained on Monday.

Mahama to Deploy AI to Fight Galamsey

During the ‘3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining’ hosted by the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani, former President John Mahama outlined new strategies to tackle illegal small-scale mining.

He proposed integrating cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to monitor and regulate this sector, aiming to mitigate its adverse effects on the environment and address widespread concerns among Ghanaians.

The initiative reflects a proactive approach to managing the challenges posed by illegal mining, particularly in relation to water treatment costs as highlighted by the Ghana Water Company.

“We will introduce and encourage technological innovation to improve capacity for coordinated monitoring of the small-scale mining sector and reduce environmental impact,” he said.

He proposed the utilisation of AI to identify small-scale mining and galamsey activities, monitor excavators, and establish geo-fences around concessions to prevent mining operations in unauthorized areas, including water bodies.

“This will include using AI to locate all small-scale mining and galamsey operations, track excavators, and geo-fence all concessions to ensure mining operations are not conducted in unapproved areas, including water bodies.”

This initiative aims to strengthen coordinated efforts in monitoring and regulating mining activities, thereby promoting sustainable mining practices and environmental conservation.

    Technology Does It Better

Adding her voice, Joyce Bawa-Mogtari said despite the government’s failure to use drones to fight the menace, AI can be more effective.

“You can sit in your room even and be able to tell that the military that you’ve sent, instead of the ones that we saw in videos wearing mufti and going out there to engage in these activities themselves, are working.”

“These are technologies that will be used to actually expose some of these acts.”

According to her, due to the importance of the subject matter, a lot of support could be obtained for free from various stakeholders in the mining industry.

“Remember that climate control and climate change are big conversations. There are government-to-government and state-to-state conversations that are taking place. There’s a lot of resources…there will be conversations that will lead us to this process, but note also, that it is a matter of public interest.

“Larger mining companies invest a lot in their mines. The activities of these illegal responsible miners affect their activities too. It is also their responsibility in terms of corporate image to invest in this and they are doing a great job already.”

Madam Bawa-Mogtari said CSOs are already having conversations about how to support the fight, so the next NDC government will count on them to “help with education and training.”

Two police inspectors slapped with a 5-year prison term over secessionist activities

Accra High Court has sentenced two Police Inspectors to a combined total of nine years in prison for their involvement with the Western Togo Restoration Front (WTRF), a secessionist and banned organization in Ghana.

Billy Akuaku, who financially supported another group called the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), received a five-year prison sentence and a GH¢6,000 fine. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional five months in prison for Akuaku.

Gabriel Dorduno, also a financial contributor to the HSGF, was sentenced to four years in prison and fined GH¢3,600. If Dorduno did not pay the fine, he would serve an extra three months in prison.

His sentence was given in absentia.

These sentences were issued after Judge Mary Yanzuh found both men guilty at the conclusion of their trial. The charges included membership in banned organizations, namely the WTRF and HSGF, and making contributions to these groups.

Akuaku faced an additional charge for accepting financial contributions from members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation’s Jasikan Branch.

The court justified the harsh sentences, stating that as members of the security service, the defendants should have protected the Ghana Police Service and the country rather than leaking information.

The prosecution argued that based on intelligence gathered by the National Security Council, an operation was conducted to identify and arrest WTRF members.

These members had blocked the highway in Juapong and Sogakope and set fire to two STC vehicles on September 25, 2022.

The prosecution said that during investigations into the activities of the banned organization, the investigation team discovered a WhatsApp group platform with the “SEC ADMI”, a group created by high-ranking members of the organization to discuss security-related issues. .

In addition, the prosecution told the court that further investigation revealed that some members of the group were security personnel, including those charged here.

The prosecution said the now-convicted accused were also found to be members of the two WhatsApp platforms of the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), namely “Psalm 21” and “HSGF”.

According to the prosecution, Akuaku was arrested on March 7, 2021, and taken to his residence in Adzogekope. During the search of his room, the investigation team discovered eight WTRF membership cards, one of which was issued in his name.

Additionally, they found a notebook containing financial records of members from the Jasikan branch of WTRF, along with a list of executive members titled “Upper Lake-Oti Provincial Executive Committee”.

On the same day, the investigation team proceeded to Dordonu’s residence, where they found a WTRF membership card, a notebook labeled “Funeral Contribution”, and a mobile phone.

Subsequently, the station officer informed Dordonu to appear before the Director of the Intelligence Unit at the CID headquarters. Dordonu complied on April 8, 2021, and was subsequently arrested.

During interrogation, Akuaku admitted to being a member of HSGF. In Dordonu’s case, he acknowledged ownership of the notebook found in his room but denied possession of the WTRF membership card.

The prosecution detailed that according to the notebook labeled “HSGF JAS BRANCH” found in Akuaku’s room, he had made monthly contributions of GH¢10 each for September and October to HSGF.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Akuaku had contributed GH¢150, while Dordonu had contributed GH¢100 to HSGF.

GMOs, land banks a necessity for attainment of Ghana’s food sovereignty – Expert

Research scientist at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission’s Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute, Dr. Daniel Osei-Ofosu, highlighted the potential for Ghana to achieve food sovereignty by integrating biotechnology into local food production.

He emphasized the need for well-defined land banks and discussed how genetically modified foods could address challenges such as low yields and food insecurity, thereby reducing the country’s reliance on imported food products.

“Importation of basic food including onions, tomatoes among others demand that we begin to strongly consider innovative ideas such as GMOs to help us become food sufficient. It is very necessary,” he told the B&FT at a biotechnology forum in Accra.

Ghana faces a significant annual import bill exceeding US$430 million for tomatoes and onions from neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.

The cost of a box of tomatoes in local markets surged from GH¢4,200 in January to GH¢7,500 in June this year.

Over the past decade, Ghana’s food import expenditure has soared to an estimated US$10 billion, as reported by the Ministry of Finance.

Dr. Osei-Ofosu emphasized the urgent need for dialogue and the adoption of biotechnology to support local farmers in producing essential food commodities.

He highlighted that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) offer plant breeders tools for disease control, adaptation, and other benefits, dispelling misconceptions about their safety.

Managing Ghana’s agricultural landscape effectively through initiatives like land banks is crucial for achieving food security and sovereignty, Dr. Osei-Ofosu added.

“Once these land banks are designated and remain unencroached, the call for innovation and biotechnology in food production will also increase,” he said.

A symposium convened to address the progress of genetically modified cowpea developed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research focused on its advancement towards commercialization.

Dr. Richard Ampadu Ameyaw, National Coordinator of the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB) and a research scientist at CSIR, revealed that development of the GM cowpea has reached its final stages.

Nevertheless, it is currently undergoing regulatory approval.

“This means all due diligence, including trial and field work, has been done. We are engaging the National Seed Council and other critical stakeholders for a final decision of approval and commercialisation,” he said.

See how the cedi will do from tomorrow forward – Finance Minister boasts about govt’s performance

Finance Minister Dr. Amin Adam has confidently forecasted a rebound of the Ghanaian Cedi against the US dollar after its recent depreciation against other major currencies.

The minister, who is also the MP for Karaga, made this assertion while announcing the successful completion of the government’s debt restructuring program with official creditors.

Dr. Amin Adam highlighted that the restructuring of $5.1 billion in debt with these creditors, alongside the completed restructuring of $13.1 billion with Eurobond holders, will restore economic confidence.

This renewed confidence is expected to attract investors to the local economy, thereby strengthening the cedi.

“Watch the cedi to the dollar after tomorrow… Let’s watch it and see; the confidence will come,” he stated.

“The investors will return to Ghana, and the growth trajectory will even become clearer for all of us,” Dr. Amin Adam added.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in the UK over the weekend, Finance Minister Dr. Amin Adam lauded the economic management by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He expressed confidence in the NPP’s prospects of winning the 2024 general elections against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“On the economy, our record is better than their record. On the size of the economy, we’ve done better than them. On per capita income, we’ve done better than them.

On job creation, we’ve done better than them. On economic growth, we’ve done better than them,” the minister said.

Family of suspended form 3 student of Labone petitions GES over assault, his suspension

Ghana Education Service (GES) has received a petition to launch a thorough investigation into the physical assault and indefinite suspension of Abraham Sambou, a third-year student at Labone Senior High School.

In a letter addressed to the GES on June 21, Mrs. Raissa Ebu detailed the incident that occurred on June 18.

She reported that House Master Mr. Eric Agyemang, also known as Power, allegedly slapped Mr. Sambou following a false accusation by the school prefect, Blessing Nyamekye, who claimed Mr. Sambou was using a mobile phone and had refused to hand it over.

“In addition to the assault, Master Sambou was prevented from attending classes on the same day and was kept in the senior house master’s without food nor water until after 2 PM, when we arrived to meet with the school’s management.”

“Following this, Master Sambou has been indefinitely expelled from the boarding house despite his denial of the false allegations.

Master Sambou maintains that he does not use a phone at school; he was merely defending himself against the prefect’s harassment and false accusation,” she stated.

Mrs Ebu expressed that this unjustified, undocumented expulsion without due process has created a significant issue for the entire family. This is because Master Sambou would now have to travel daily from Kasoa in the Central Region to Labone, Accra.

“The family is deeply concerned about the mistreatment of our ward Master Sambou and the conduct of the school authorities, particularly Mr Agyemang, who has admitted to slapping the vulnerable final year student- a student who needs all the psychological help he can get as the WASSCE approaches.”

“Mr Agyemang justified his actions by claiming Master Sambou lied about his father’s availability when asked to provide his father’s phone number.

Later, it was confirmed that Master Sambou’s father was indeed unavailable as the call was eventually answered by the boy’s mother,” she further said.

Mrs Ebu also mentioned that during their visit to the school to discuss the issue, the headmistress of the school Mrs Rejoice Acorlor openly supported Mr Agyemang’s actions. She stated that she would have acted even more severely by slapping the boy and hitting him with her shoes.

“She also mentioned that if the incident had occurred before the registration for the WASSCE, she would have ensured Master Sambou was not registered for the exam,” she added.

Mrs Ebu pointed out that such a boastful stance by the headmistress raises serious concerns about the school’s governance and the quality of education.

“The wrongful actions against Abraham Sambou have caused significant distress and disruption to his education, particularly as he prepares for his final examination.

Following the assault, Master Abraham Sambou has been experiencing severe headaches and pain in his left ear and left eye, necessitating treatment at the Amanfro Polyclinic on Wednesday 19th June 2024.

“As of the time of writing this petition, Mr Eric Agyemang has a photograph of himself on his WhatsApp Display Picture (contact number 0244382506) in which he is seen purportedly [displaying] a gun.”

“It is imperative that Master Abraham Sambou is given a fair hearing as required by natural law so that he can continue his studies without undue physical and psychological trauma,” she stated.

Video: Afari Military Hospital left to rot in the Ashanti Region; concerned citizen ‘cries’

A concerned citizen has lamented the deplorable state of the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region.

In a tweet shared by @YayraKoku and seen by TIG.post, a man describes how the 500-bed capacity hospital could serve over six communities once completed adding that, the abandoned hospital is larger than the ‘famous’ Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

“This is Atwima Nwabiagya, where the Afari Government Hospital is located. This hospital, with a 500-bed capacity, is larger than Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, yet it has been neglected and is now overrun with weeds” he fumed.

He stated that the current administration has repeatedly promised to commission the hospital, but these promises have yet to be fulfilled.

“The cars parked here are engulfed by vegetation, and while there are quarters for workers, the entire area is abandoned, guarded only by security personnel

It’s been eight years, and every year brings new promises about its commissioning” he said.

He recounts how the Vice president and flagbearer of the ruling NPP Dr Bawumia promised to commission to the two hospitals in August during his campaign tour to the Ashanti Region expressong his doubts over the potency of such promise being fulfilled.

Considering the current state of the hospital, he asked ” Does this look like a hospital that can be commissioned in August?”

During his visit to the Ashanti region, the Vice President mentioned that both the Afari Military Hospital and the Sewia Hospital would be commissioned by August 2024″ he continued.

He urged the government o halt some of the Agenda 111 project to focus on the completion of the Afari Military Hospital.

“Instead of pursuing the Agenda 111 project in Kumasi, can’t we focus on completing these two hospitals first? They could serve around ten constituencies. It’s frustrating to see such a significant facility left to deteriorate, especially when it has the potential to provide crucial healthcare services” he said.

    About Afari Hospital

The Afari Community Hospital, also known as the Afari Military Hospital, is located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Its construction began in 2014 during the presidency of John Dramani Mahama under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. The project was initiated as part of a broader effort to improve healthcare infrastructure across the country.

The hospital was intended to be a state-of-the-art facility with modern medical equipment to provide high-quality healthcare services to the military personnel and the general public. It was part of a series of health infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in Ghana.

The current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has continued the project. However, there have been delays and challenges in its final completion and operationalization.

“We shall never allow our Parks and Gardens land to be sold!” – Ablakwa in new revelation

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has advised Dani Ike Estate Developers Limited to request for a refund in a suspected sale of state property Parks and Gardens to their firm.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post on Wednesday June 23, 2024 the outspoken Member f Parliament commended the officials in charge of the Park for their resistance to the said firm in their bid to claim ownership of the state’s property.

“Dani Ike Estate Developers Limited are well advised to stop the harassment and go for a refund from whoever sold our prime Cantonments land belonging to Parks and Gardens to them.

I commend officials of the Department of Parks and Gardens for their courageous and patriotic resistance so far” he noted.

Highlighting the significant importance of the Garden in the restoration of Ghana’s vegetative cover, he mentioned how the park has served as “active green open space where diverse tree species are cultivated, and other seedlings are nursed to meet our national environmental objectives” since its allocation to us by our colonial master in 1952.

“The 10.8 acres Parks and Gardens land was allocated on 2nd October, 1952 by the then colonial Commissioner of Lands as our foremost Horticultural Nursery” he added.

Consequently, Ablakwa has vowed to fight against the sale of the the over 65 years old vegetative cover, assuring a Parliamentary inquiry into the alleged sale of Parks and Gardens.

“We shall never allow our Parks and Gardens land to be sold! Parliament will soon launch an inquiry into the ongoing despicable state capture and all those harassing public officials to vacate because they are the new owners should get ready to appear before us at live public hearings.

Ugly State Capture shall be defeated!” he stated.

The Department of Parks and Gardens in Ghana was established in 1961, primarily to enhance the aesthetic appeal of urban areas and to promote environmental sustainability.

It was founded during the tenure of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who recognized the importance of green spaces for improving the quality of life in cities.

The department’s mandate includes the creation and maintenance of public parks, gardens, and recreational spaces. Over the years, it has played a crucial role in landscaping major urban centers, providing botanical services, and contributing to environmental education and conservation efforts.

Despite facing challenges such as funding and urbanization pressures, the Department of Parks and Gardens remains a key institution in Ghana’s efforts to promote green urban environments.

    Kimmich nears Bayern departure

Joshua Kimmich appears poised to leave Bayern Munich either this summer or next year, as he is unwilling to extend his contract, according to reports.

The 29-year-old, currently under contract with Bayern until 2025, has shown no interest in renewing his deal, opening the possibility for a transfer this summer.

The report indicates that Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City are the only European clubs capable of securing the Germany international.

Kimmich, one of Bayern’s highest earners with an annual salary of approximately €20 million, could be too expensive for other potential suitors.

If a transfer is not secured this summer, Kimmich could leave as a free agent next year, causing a significant financial loss for Bayern.

This scenario means Vincent Kompany’s side might entertain transfer offers.

However, serious discussions are not expected to occur until after Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign concludes.

Wait for Karma! – Countryman Songo blast Ogum over ‘sacking’ of Kotoko players

Patrick Osei Agyemang, known as Countryman Songo, a former member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s management committee under Nana Yaw Amponsah, has criticized coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, accusing him of political maneuvering and hypocrisy.

In response to the club’s decision to release over 18 players, Countryman Songo claimed that these players are being ‘punished’ due to their association with Nana Yaw Amponsah.

He alleged that Dr. Ogum is letting his personal issues with Nana Yaw Amponsah influence his treatment of the players, assuming their loyalty lies with Amponsah.

Countryman Songo cautioned Dr. Ogum to reconsider his actions, suggesting that karma will eventually catch up with the coach for his treatment of the players.

“Nana Yaw Amponsah brought him to Kotoko and made him a league winner as a coach. The players who have now been released were part of the squad that won him his first league title as a coach.

“He engaged in politics and ostracized them because he thought they were Nana Yaw Amponsah’s players and would not perform for the team, but these players are professionals.

He referred to them as senior players, yet they were signed by Nana Yaw Amponsah.

“Initially, he favored the players he brought to the club, but when he realized they were not performing, he reverted to the seasoned players signed by Nana Yaw. He has nothing to offer Kotoko.

“All he does is engage in politics and hypocrisy. Karma will deal with him. Kotoko endured a struggling season because of politics. The coach doesn’t have solid plans for the team, so they will continue to struggle,” he stated on his Adom TV show.

On June 18, 2024, Asante Kotoko announced the release of eleven players at the end of the 2023/2024 Ghana football season.

The following day, the club confirmed the dismissal of an additional seven players, raising the total number of players released to eighteen.

The incident occurred on Sunday in Rubavu district, where 37 people sustained injuries, with four being hospitalized for serious conditions, as stated by the Ministry of Local Government.

This happened as campaigning for the July general election kicked off on Saturday, with President Kagame hosting two rallies in northern Rwanda over the weekend.

It apologised to the deceased’s family, adding that a medical team on site “did everything possible”.

President Paul Kagame is running for a fourth term. He has been Rwanda’s de facto leader since 1994, when his then-rebel group, the Rwanda Patriotic Front, took power following the genocide against his Tutsi ethnic group.

Kagame won the previous presidential election in 2017 with almost 99% of the vote.

At 66 years old, Kagame has faced criticism from human rights organizations for suppressing the opposition. However, he staunchly defends Rwanda’s human rights record, asserting that the country upholds political freedoms.

After Sunday’s stampede, the ministry of local government reminded “those participating in campaign activities… to follow the instructions given by those in charge to ensure the safety and tranquility of those participating in campaign activities”.

Paul Kagame and his RPF Inkotanyi party have not issued a comment regarding the fatal incident at the rally. However, the party did share a video on Facebook on Monday morning showing Kagame taking the stage at the event.

In the footage, supporters dressed in party colors can be seen dancing, cheering, and waving flags. The party reported that approximately 250,000 people attended the rally.

In the upcoming presidential race, Kagame will be competing against two other candidates: Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana.

Diane Rwigara, a vocal critic of Kagame, has been barred from participating in the election.

The electoral commission stated that Rwigara failed to provide the necessary documentation proving she had no criminal record and did not demonstrate sufficient nationwide support to qualify.

Rwigara, who was also disqualified from the 2017 election, has dismissed these claims, asserting that she was unfairly denied the right to campaign.

Rwandans will go to the polls on July 15 to elect their next president and lawmakers.

Father of late Hans Kwofie seized his car keys 2-weeks before his accident

The untimely passing of ex-Ghana Premier League striker Hans Kwofie has surfaced new revelations about his final moments, including the pivotal role his father played.

Kwofie tragically lost his life on Friday, June 21, 2024, in a fatal road accident involving another friend of his.

According to reports, prior to the accident, Kwofie’s father had attempted to prevent his son from taking the ill-fated journey.

It was disclosed that his father had intervened by confiscating his car keys in an effort to dissuade him from driving. The vehicle involved in the crash, however, belonged to a different friend.

“Even the car he was using was not his. The car belonged to Samuel Nzemaba.

His father had seized his personal car two weeks ago because he did not want him to drive,” a sports presenter stated on Saturday, June 22, 2024, on Sompa Sports.

Additional details surrounding the tragic incident revealed that Hans Kwofie had plans to travel to Germany in early July to finalize a move to a new club.

His companion, who also lost his life in the accident, was scheduled to get married just a day before the fatal incident occurred.

“His friend, who was to get married today (Saturday), had come to visit him at home, and they were told of food being prepared; Hans’ wife told them she was preparing food, but he said no, the food will take time.

So they moved a car to go and eat at a bush chop-bar around Dadwin. They were going to eat and return, and that’s when they met the tragedy.

“They had finished eating and were turning around to return when the incident occurred,” the report by Sompa Sports added.

Hans Kwofie, renowned for his goal-scoring prowess, clinched the top scorer accolade in the Ghana Premier League during the 2017 season.

He also made three appearances for Ghana’s U-20 national team, the Black Satellites.

Throughout his career, Kwofie showcased his talents with several clubs in the Ghana Premier League, including Medeama, Ashgold, Legon Cities, Bechem United, Heart of Lions, and Aduana Stars.

Tragically, at the age of 35, he was playing for Birgunj United FC in Nepal at the time of his passing.

Netizens blast Google over ‘hide-and-seek with lions’ post

Google issued an apology following widespread criticism for a controversial comment made on its Africa page on X.

The post, intended to encourage interaction, asked followers to share their most memorable football stories, highlighting football as the continent’s most popular sport.

Attempting a humorous tone, the post jokingly contrasted this with the suggestion that hide-and-seek with lions is not the common pastime.

“Here’s Africa’s most common game. No, it’s not hide-and-seek with lions (although that sounds exciting). It’s football! Share your craziest football stories with us. We’re all about that kick it life,” the post stated.

However, several users on the social media platform were quick to point out a racist undertone to the post, specifically the attempt to feed into a stereotype about Africa.

“‘Google Africa’ being openly racist is wilder than wild,” @_FarouqOlami commented.

“What’s with this stereotype of a whole continent, @googleafrica? Africa is diverse with rich cultures and modern cities. Why couldn’t you celebrate the sport without the ‘hide-and-seek with lions’ reference?” another user, @Uchedible, posted.

In response to the backlash, Google removed the post and issued an apology, clarifying that it was intended to be humorous.

“We sincerely apologize for our tweet today. Our intent was humor, but we missed the mark and offended many. We will strive to do better,” the company said.

  • Akufo-Addo to meet organized labour over SSNIT hotels saga on June 25 – Ablakwa reveals

Akufo-Addo to meet organized labour over SSNIT hotels saga on June 25 – Ablakwa reveals

Following the “Hands Off Our Hotel” protest, President Akufo-Addo has arranged a meeting with Organised Labour on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, to discuss the controversial sale of SSNIT hotels.

This announcement was made by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during an interview on TV3’s KeyPoints on Saturday, June 22.

“Organised Labour has informed me that the President has invited them to a meeting on the 25th of this month, which is Tuesday,” Mr. Ablakwa revealed, expressing his hope that the meeting will not be an attempt to persuade Organised Labour to retreat from their opposition to the sale.

Mr. Ablakwa voiced his frustration, stating, “I’m so disappointed in this President that he has taken so long to intervene in this scandalous matter and just stop this rot.”

Amid mounting concerns, President Akufo-Addo has invited Organised Labour for a meeting on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, to discuss SSNIT’s controversial decision to sell 60 percent of its shares in several hotels.

These include prominent establishments like Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Beach Hotel, Ridge Royal Hotel, and Busua Beach Hotel, with Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong identified as the buyer.

The issue gained traction following a demonstration led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, under the banner “Hands Off Our Hotels.”

Ablakwa presented a petition urging the President to intervene and halt the sale.

During the demonstration, Ablakwa raised concerns about the suitability of Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotels as the buyer, citing alleged financial losses and failure to file tax returns for 2022 based on documents purportedly intercepted from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

In response, Bryan Acheampong denied to substantiate his claims with the alleged intercepted documents from GRA.

Victims of banking clean-up to receive GHC 1.5bn bailout from Akufo-Addo – Finance Minister

President Akufo-Addo has directed the Finance Ministry to release ¢1.5 billion to support customers impacted by the banking sector clean-up.

This announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam during a UK Town Hall meeting over the weekend.

Dr. Amin Adam highlighted that the President’s directive requires the disbursement to be completed by October.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians, noting that individuals are responsible for their own investment choices, not the government.

“Ideally, government should not be held responsible for the investment decisions of individuals, but this government is so caring.

“Mistakes were made and people were not well-informed, and they didn’t know who to consult to be advised, but we also know that the people who are affected are suffering, and we have heard that some people have died and others had to commit suicide.”

“This government is so caring that in the first place, we granted some bailout to all the affected and I want to tell you again that the President has directed that we do another bailout.

“So between now and October, we will release 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis to the affected people,” he said.

Dr. Amin Adam has also announced the successful completion of Ghana’s debt restructuring program with its official creditors.

The Karaga Member of Parliament highlighted that the government has successfully restructured $5.1 billion in debt with these creditors and has also finalized the restructuring of $13.1 billion with Eurobond holders.

Former UTAG president ‘condemns’ Bawumia’s kayayei training programme

Former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, has expressed concerns that recent government initiatives, such as constructing hostels and providing training programmes for female head porters (kayayei), will promote rural-urban migration.

“I believe it is a retrogressive measure; such initiatives always set us back because we aim to stop rural-urban migration. In an attempt to do that, you don’t build an edifice in Accra. You would only be calling them to come to Accra.

“This is a common economic indicator… One would have thought that they would be given incentives to stay back.

So, if you build hostels and train those coming to Accra, and give them money to work, who is going to ensure that after six months they won’t leave Accra and return to the North? And if all of them leave, no one would be here,” he said.

Recently, Vice President Bawumia inaugurated a modern hostel facility for female porters, mainly from northern Ghana.

The initiative also featured training and educational sessions designed to equip these women with essential survival skills.

The first group of beneficiaries has already completed the program and received startup capital to launch their own businesses.

  • Ghana’s debt restructuring is over – Finance Minister

Ghana’s debt restructuring is over – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has announced the successful completion of Ghana’s debt restructuring program with its official creditors.

According to the Karaga Member of Parliament, the government has restructured $5.1 billion in debt with these creditors and has also finalized the restructuring of $13.1 billion with Eurobond holders.

Speaking at a UK Town Hall meeting, Dr. Amin Adam emphasized that these efforts have led to savings of $8 billion for the country.

“Last two weeks, we concluded negotiations with the official creditors, and we have agreed to restructure 5.1 billion dollars, I am telling you that the government is good in negotiations and of this amount, we are going to make savings of $2 billion.”

“As I speak to you, tomorrow morning, there will be an announcement that we have also concluded our negotiations with the Eurobond Holders of $3.1 billion and ladies and gentlemen when we announce it, please read the details. We have negotiated a good deal for Ghana and that is $8 billion,” he said.

So between now and October, we will release ¢1.5 billion to the affected people.”

The government recently secured a deal with bilateral creditors to delay interest payments and postpone the maturity date of restructured debt.

To meet its IMF target, Ghana, with an economy valued at $77 billion, must reduce its debt to 55% of GDP by 2028, down from a projected 109% before restructuring began.

The current agreement with bondholders would leave the debt slightly above this target. However, Ghana’s economy performed better than expected in 2023, growing by 2.9% compared to the IMF’s initial target of 1.5%.

This improved performance means a revised Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) can accommodate the bondholder agreement, according to Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam.

Ghana started its debt restructuring efforts over a year ago as part of an IMF deal, reaching a preliminary agreement in January to restructure $5.4 billion in obligations under the Group of 20 Common Framework for Debt Treatment. This set the stage for restructuring Eurobond debt.

  • NAPO’s vice presidency bid: NIB report shows 89% of NPP supporters are open to any candidate

NAPO’s vice presidency bid: NIB report shows 89% of NPP supporters are open to any candidate

A confidential report from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) regarding the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) selection of a running mate has been leaked, causing significant upheaval in the political landscape.

Based on a nationwide survey of 5,116 party members over two days in mid-June, the report offers a deep look into the party’s internal dynamics and preferences.

The survey aimed to measure support for Dr. Yaw Mathew Opoku-Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the current Minister of Energy from Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region.

While initial speculation suggested strong support for NAPO, with some reports claiming up to 70 percent backing his candidacy as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, the leaked report reveals a different story.

It shows that 84 percent of respondents see NAPO as the best pairing for Dr. Bawumia, with 88 percent considering him the party’s preferred choice. Surprisingly, 89 percent are open to any candidate selected by Dr. Bawumia.

This revelation challenges previous assumptions and highlights party members’ flexibility regarding the running mate selection.

Critics have questioned the NIB’s methodology and conclusions, accusing the bureau of bias. They suggest the survey may have been designed to favor NAPO by limiting respondents’ options to him and a few others, potentially skewing the results.

The report has also sparked a broader debate about transparency and inclusivity within the NPP’s decision-making process. Questions have been raised about the exclusion of prominent female figures from consideration, despite their significant contributions to the party.

In response, party members have expressed mixed opinions. While some support NAPO’s candidacy, others criticize what they see as an attempt to pressure Dr. Bawumia into selecting NAPO as his running mate.

The leaked NIB report has exposed internal divisions within the NPP and ignited a debate about fairness and the integrity of the party’s nomination process.

With elections approaching, the NPP leadership faces a challenging task in navigating these issues to ensure electoral success.

Two new football academies to be commissioned this year – GFA

Ghana Football Association (GFA) plans to inaugurate two additional football academies in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions as part of its strategy to identify and cultivate young football prospects nationwide.

Professor Isaac Kwame Mintah, Technical Director of the GFA, indicated that these new facilities will extend the GFA Elite Football Academies initiative, following the successful establishment of a similar academy in Winkogo, Upper East Region, earlier this year.

Addressing the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) Knowledge Exchange Seminar in Accra last Thursday, Prof. Mintah emphasized the long-term goal of these endeavors: to nurture promising young players for the national youth teams, with the ultimate aim of bolstering the senior national team.

“Even as we speak today, we have already started the process to establish a second academy in the Ashanti region, specifically in Kumasi, which will serve students from the Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions,” Prof. Mintah explained. “Additionally, we are planning to open another academy in the Greater Accra region this year, hopefully in Prampram.”

The GFA’s strategy includes establishing Elite Football Academies in all ten footballing regions of Ghana within the next seven years.

“The goal is to have one academy per region, ensuring a continuous supply of talent for our youth national teams, which will eventually feed into the senior national team,” Prof. Mintah added.

“Our aim is to maintain a robust talent pipeline, positioning Ghana to excel in the World Cup and potentially conquer the world stage.”

Former Ghana international and FIFA High Performance Expert, Tony Baffoe, praised the initiative, noting its potential to strengthen the country’s football foundation.

“The more regional centres we have where players can train, the better it is for the country. This approach will help develop future stars like Dede Ayew and Kudus,” Baffoe said.

The Head of the FIFA TDS, Ulf Schott, mentioned the scheme’s objective to support national teams in reaching their full potential, particularly as FIFA expands the World Cup to 48 teams.

FIFA has allocated $200 million for the Talent Development Scheme over the next four years, aiming to ensure that every talented player has the opportunity to be selected and developed,” Schott stated.

The TDS emphasizes funding, expertise, training, education, and knowledge exchange. Currently, a Knowledge Exchange Workshop is taking place in Ghana, involving ten Member Associations: Ghana, Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, and Zambia.

With the Academies Programme, FIFA aims to establish a high-performance academy or centre of excellence in at least 75 member associations by 2027.

Self-acclaimed chief given a 15 month jail term over fraudulent sale of land

An Accra Circuit Court has handed down a 15-month prison sentence to a self-proclaimed chief and businessman, Nii Kotey Susubribi, also known as Nii Isaac or Kotey Nii Quaye, for engaging in fraudulent land dealings.

Presided over by Evelyn Asamoah, the court found him guilty of charges that included making death threats and conducting deceitful transactions.

Tears streamed down his face as he awaited police escort to begin serving his sentence.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong, who led the prosecution, the case involved two complainants: Alfred Agbosu, a businessman from Achimota, and Freeman Kofi Owusu, residing in New Achimota, Accra.

In 2003, Agbosu purchased 1.869 acres of land in Abehenase from the Amah Asor family, lawfully represented by the accused’s late elder brother, Kotey Nii Kwei.

Agbosu obtained a Land Title Certificate in December 2005 for the land, upon which he constructed two single rooms that he later entrusted to his caretaker, Korsi Tondey.

The prosecution detailed that trouble began in February 2015 when the accused, now convicted, started interfering with Agbosu’s property, claiming ownership.

“The caretaker, fearing for his life, packed his belongings and left the land.

The accused person then fraudulently sold a portion of the land to unsuspecting members of the public, including the second complainant, Freeman Kofi Owusu, for GHc42,000.”

The prosecution added that a search obtained from the Land Registration Division of the Land Commission in Accra confirmed Mr Agbosu’s title to the land.

  • Minority to protest over locked up medical supplies at the Port

Minority to protest over locked up medical supplies at the Port

Minority in Parliament has declared its preparedness to stage protests if the government does not promptly resolve the issue of stalled containers holding crucial medical supplies at the Tema Port.

Despite assurances from Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye that efforts were underway to clear these containers, the Minority noted that several of them still languished uncleared at the port.

“The Minority will not relent in our efforts to push-clear those locked-up commodities and drugs from the port,” they added.

At a press conference in Parliament on Thursday, the Ranking Member of the Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said: “As we speak now, not all the containers of drugs and commodities at the port have been cleared.

“We are a group of reasonable people, and so we have heard the plea by the Minister of Health that we should give him two weeks.

“That notwithstanding, we have heard him, but we are sending a clear warning that within his own two weeks, all the containers of drugs should be cleared from the port, and not some as they have been doing,” he added.

Mr Akandoh, who is also the MP for Juaboso, observed that in spite of persistant pressure on the government to clear all the containers, it was dragging its feet.

In his view, the “insensitivity and irresponsibility” of the government had become legendary.

“I think that when it comes to matters of health, the government must move with alacrity because it borders on the lives of the people,” he said.

The government released some funds to the Ministry of Health last week to facilitate the clearance of essential medical supplies that had stalled at the Tema port for over a year now.

“The Ministry of Health’s receipt of GH¢7,429,694.39 from the Ministry of Finance for the settlement of demurrage highlights a concerted effort to expedite the clearance of the medical commodities,” a release issued by the ministry said.

The allocation was made to address the extended delay in clearing essential supplies donated by the Global Fund for Community Foundation, intended to support Ghana.

These supplies, gifted by the Global Fund at no cost, have been stuck in bureaucratic hurdles, causing significant delays in their release from the port.

The government is obligated to settle taxes, levies, and port charges totaling US$3.6 million, which are required to facilitate the release of these commodities.

  • Health Minister announces 65% completion of $9M Children’s Hospital in Weija

Health Minister announces 65% completion of $9M Children’s Hospital in Weija

Construction of a new children’s hospital in Weija, within the Weija Gbawe municipality, is currently at 65% completion.

The facility, which is being funded by the World Bank with a budget of $9 million, will accommodate 120 beds upon its anticipated opening.

The hospital aims to address the increasing concerns about the deteriorating state of the Princess Marie Louise Hospital, the capital’s sole public children’s hospital. By easing the burden on the existing facility, it will also facilitate necessary future renovations.

During a recent inspection by Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, contractor Joseph Adams of Awerco Construction Limited confirmed that efforts are underway to meet the September deadline for project completion.

The new hospital is set to include an emergency unit, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, recovery wards, three operating theatres, VIP wards, imaging and biomedical laboratories, an outpatient department (OPD), and accommodations for mothers.

Dr. Okoe Boye commended the progress made by the contractors and encouraged them to adhere to the established timelines. He also urged them to prioritize hiring skilled workers from the local community to support the local economy.

“This project is a testament to the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration’s commitment to improving pediatric care in Ghana,” he said.
“Once operational, this new hospital will significantly enhance healthcare delivery for children in Accra and beyond,” Dr Okoe Boye added.

He highlighted that the initiative formed part of a broader governmental drive to enhance healthcare infrastructure nationwide, with a particular emphasis on improving child health.

Speaking in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, the Health Minister noted significant progress in the construction of the 500-unit Maternity and Children’s Block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

This new facility aims to replace the structurally unsound 45-year-old structure that was recently demolished.

The revival of this project was achieved through collaboration involving the First Lady’s office, the Manhyia Palace, and the Multimedia Group. It resulted in the establishment of a Mother and Baby Unit to alleviate immediate congestion issues at KATH.

Further underscoring the government’s commitment to child health, the Health Minister announced in November 2021 that the National Health Insurance Scheme would cover childhood cancers.

This groundbreaking policy includes the diagnosis and treatment of major childhood cancers like Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, Burkitt Lymphoma, Retinoblastoma, and Wilms Tumour, which are highly treatable when detected early.

Additionally, construction is underway for a 40-bed Pediatric Oncology block at the children’s unit of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, developed in collaboration with private sector partners. This multipurpose facility is set to significantly enhance healthcare delivery for the country’s future generation.

The new Mother and Child Centre, a centenary project at Korle Bu, is poised to replace the outdated Maternity block and revolutionize maternity healthcare at Ghana’s premier health facility.

During a recent inspection, Dr. Okoe-Boye expressed optimism about the ongoing projects and their potential to transform healthcare delivery nationwide.

He stressed the importance of prioritizing specialist hospitals in Ghana, noting their crucial role in providing specialized medical services, enhancing professional specialization among healthcare providers, and relieving overcrowding in general hospitals.

This strategic focus, he emphasized, would elevate the standard of medical care available to the nation’s youngest citizens.

In 1990, the National Development Policy Framework (NDPF) was developed under the National Development Planning Commission, which subsequently became known as Ghana Vision 2020 – a long-term plan for Ghana to become a middle-income country by the year 2020.

With food security a priority for Rawlings, agricultural policies were initiated that resulted in the recognition of Ghana’s food production growth of 148 percent for the period 1995-1997 as “the third highest achievement on the record after Jordan (157%) and China (156%)” in the World Bank’s 1999-2000 Development Report.

A Shining Light for African Unity
Jerry John Rawlings’s influence extended far beyond the borders of Ghana. He was a staunch advocate for African unity and development, believing that the continent’s strength lay in its collective efforts. His leadership and vision for a united Africa inspired many across the continent.

President Rawlings was a vocal proponent of Pan-Africanism, a movement that seeks to unify African nations in their quest for political and economic independence. His speeches and actions emphasized the importance of solidarity among African countries, urging them to work together to overcome common challenges. Rawlings’s belief in the potential of Africa and its people was evident in his tireless efforts to promote cooperation and mutual support among African nations.

In October 2011, he was appointed as Ambassador of the Pan-African Parliament. A year before he had been appointed by the Conference of Heads of State of the African Union as the AU High Representative for Somalia, a crucial period when strong leadership was required to ensure the needed political transition and stability in the war-stricken country.

President Rawlings forged strong relationships with other African leaders, working collaboratively to address issues such as poverty, conflict, and underdevelopment. His influence was instrumental in fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose across the continent. Rawlings’s legacy as a champion for African unity continues to inspire current and future leaders to strive for a more prosperous and united Africa.

His significant role in resolving the Liberian conflict cannot be forgotten. In 1994 under his chairmanship of the Economic Community forest African States (ECOWAS), the Akosombo Accord and Accra Peace Agreements were signed.

    A Global Statesman
President Rawlings’s impact was not confined to Ghana or Africa; he was a respected statesman on the global stage. His eloquence, passion, and commitment to social justice earned him admiration and respect worldwide. Rawlings’s voice was a powerful one in international forums, where he advocated for sustainable development, good governance, and human rights.

Rawlings’s efforts to promote peace and security were evident in his involvement in various international initiatives. He played a key role in mediating conflicts and promoting dialogue in regions plagued by instability. His contributions to global discussions on development and governance underscored his belief in the interconnectedness of nations and the importance of working together to address global challenges.

Throughout his career, Rawlings maintained strong relationships with global leaders and organizations, contributing to discussions on issues ranging from economic development to environmental sustainability. His legacy as a global statesman is a testament to his belief in the power of international cooperation and his commitment to creating a better world for all.

    An Unforgettable Legacy
As we mark what would have been his 77th birthday, the absence of Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings is deeply felt. His leadership, vision, and unwavering dedication to justice left an indelible mark on the world. Rawlings’s passing in November 2020 was a profound loss for Ghana, Africa, and the international community. However, his legacy continues to inspire and guide us.

Rawlings’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life, his humility, and his commitment to justice made him a beloved figure. He was a leader who truly cared about the well-being of his citizens, and his actions reflected his deep-seated belief in the power of the people. His charismatic personality and principled leadership endeared him to many, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him or were touched by his work.

In Ghana, Flt Lt Rawlings’s contributions to economic stability, social development, and democratic governance have left a lasting legacy. The institutions he helped build and the reforms he implemented continue to shape the nation’s progress. His vision for a just and prosperous Ghana remains a guiding light for future generations.

Across Africa, President Rawlings’s advocacy for unity and cooperation continues to resonate. His belief in the potential of the continent and his efforts to promote solidarity among African nations serve as an enduring source of inspiration. His legacy as a champion for African unity is a reminder of the power of collective action in achieving shared goals.

    Rawlings Lives On
On this special day, we celebrate the life and legacy of President Jerry John Rawlings. His remarkable contributions to Ghana, Africa, and the world are a testament to his visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and deep commitment to justice. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on, inspiring us to strive for a better, more just, and prosperous future.

Happy birthday, President Rawlings. You are deeply missed by your family, friends, admirers, followers and millions of people in Ghana and across the world. • SSNIT needs no one’s approval to make decisions – Freddie Blay

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, expressed opposition to the idea of SSNIT seeking approval or consultations before making investments in other businesses.

In an interview with TV3’s Beatrice Adu on The Keypoints, Mr. Blay argued that SSNIT operates with its own board, which should have the autonomy to make decisions independently.

Regarding concerns raised by Organised Labour about their representatives on the board opposing SSNIT’s sale of the hotels, Mr. Blay emphasized that decisions of such significance cannot be dictated solely by a minority within the board.

He defended SSNIT’s transparency in publicly advertising the sale of the hotels, stating that such actions are within the board’s prerogative and are binding on all stakeholders involved.

“SSNIT decided to get involve with hotel management and purchased some hotels… I don’t believe they want to consult TUC before they do that…When you have a decision and they take a decision , the decision is binding; it is one decision…I will be surprise that four members of a board taking a decision that we don’t want one hotel to be sold.

“I can’t question the decision of SSNIT because government appointed members. I don’t have any problem with that if they decide that as a policy….indeed I’m not too sure when they decided, some tell me that they decided to dispose it as far back as 2015, 2016 when NDC was in office.

Mr. Blay stressed that he would have purchased the hotels being sold if he has the financial muscle.

  • Juve may use a key player as a bargaining chip for Man Utd’s Mason Greenwood

Juve may use a key player as a bargaining chip for Man Utd’s Mason Greenwood

Juventus is reportedly considering offering a prominent player as part of a deal to secure Mason Greenwood from Manchester United this summer.

Greenwood showcased his talent during a loan spell at Getafe last season, scoring five goals and providing one assist, which earned him the club’s Player of the Season award for 2023-24.

Several clubs, including Juventus and Lazio, have shown interest in Greenwood, suggesting his tenure at Old Trafford may be nearing its end.

Chiesa, whose contract with Juventus runs until 2025, is seen as a valuable asset for potential transfer dealings, although his final decision is expected after Euro 2024.

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Chiesa’s future at Juventus, hinting that his continuation with the club remains a possibility despite ongoing speculation.

“Juventus and Federico Chiesa’s agent Ramadani have already decided to meet after the Euros in order to decide his future,” he said.

“No negotiations over new deal at this stage, Juve are still open to proposals but Chiesa’s decision will be after Euro2024. Full focus on the pitch.”

Following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Albania and a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain, Chiesa and the Italian squad face a crucial task of regrouping before their upcoming match against Croatia.

Their aim is to secure passage to the knockout stages of the tournament in Germany.

Italy currently occupies the second position in Group B, holding a two-point advantage over Croatia, who are in third place.

  • Bayern attempted to sign Barca’s Lamine Yamal before his breakthrough

Bayern attempted to sign Barca’s Lamine Yamal before his breakthrough

Bayern Munich made an attempt to sign Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal before his breakout in La Liga when he was just 14 years old.

According to Sky Germany, Bayern had identified Yamal as a ‘top’ target at the time, with former club officials Hasan Salihamidzic and Marco Neppe eager to bring him to the Allianz Arena, seeing his potential to become a Ballon d’Or contender.

However, Yamal chose to stay with Barcelona.

Currently, at 16, Yamal is impressing for Spain at Euro 2024. He has started both games against Italy and Croatia and has even been spotted completing his homework in the dressing room.

Last season, he scored five goals and provided eight assists in 37 appearances for Barcelona in La Liga.

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, has openly expressed his admiration for Yamal following the youngster’s strong performances for the national team.

“We have the ability to continue to impose our style. We played very well with a high press, which allowed us to get the ball back. But one of the characteristics of Spain is our ability to change approaches and that variety is our strength,” he said.

“We have different qualities, different tactical approaches, and that’s an extra difficulty for opponents. If you have players with the speed of Lamine [Yamal] or Nico [Williams] or Ferran [Torres], that gives you something else. And the players know that. I have always tried to communicate that.”

Following a 3-0 triumph over Croatia and a 1-0 win against Italy, Yamal and his teammates now lead Group B. With their top spot secured, they are set to face Albania on Monday (June 24) and will likely rest players for that match.

Erling Haaland has been sharing snapshots from his holiday in Italy, where he’s enjoying his summer break aboard a massive yacht.

Following a successful season in which he helped Manchester City secure their fourth consecutive Premier League title and won back-to-back Golden Boot awards for the 2023/24 season, the Norwegian striker is taking some well-deserved time off.

After spending time in France and Spain, Haaland has now ventured to Italy.

On Instagram, he posted several photos showing him and his friend, Norway teammate Erik Botheim, relaxing on a luxurious yacht.

The 23-year-old regularly visits Marbella and its Playa Padre club.

With Norway failing to qualify for Euro 2024, Haaland has no immediate football commitments and is likely to remain in holiday mode for the rest of the month.

Euro 2024: France, Netherlands set remarkable record with goalless draw

The goalless draw between France and the Netherlands on Friday ended an extraordinary Euros streak that had lasted since the previous tournament.

As noted by StatMuse, the match at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig was the first 0-0 game since England and Scotland’s stalemate at Euro 2020.

Prior to this, 50 consecutive games had seen at least one goal.

Despite the draw, it wasn’t a setback for either team as both had secured wins in their opening matches.

Now, France and the Netherlands will vie for the top spot in Group D, with France set to play Poland and the Netherlands gearing up to face Austria.

  • Murder of soldier at Kasoa: Police still waiting for Indictment Bill for Benlord and others

Murder of soldier at Kasoa: Police still waiting for Indictment Bill for Benlord and others

The police have yet to receive the Bill of Indictment in the case of Nana Barima Ababio, also known as Benlord Ababio, who allegedly shot and killed a soldier over a land dispute in Kasoa.

Once received, the Bill of Indictment will be served on both the accused and the court, enabling the commencement of committal proceedings for the defendants to stand trial at the High Court.

Detective Inspector Samuel Adu Berchie informed the court that the accused, Benlord Ababio and Nana Amo Kofi Kwakye, were not present in court on Thursday due to security concerns.

The prosecution explained that the police had received information that the family of the deceased soldier planned to storm the courtroom during his burial today.

As a result, the court adjourned the case to July 4, 2024, and ordered the police to release the deceased’s vehicle to his family.

Benlord, a self-proclaimed traditional ruler, and Kwakye are facing charges at the Achimota District Court for their alleged involvement in the murder of Lance Corporal Michael Danso.

Upon reviewing the police docket, the Attorney General’s office advised that Benlord be charged with murder and that both Benlord and Kwakye be jointly charged with conspiracy. The court has, however, reserved their pleas.

According to the prosecution, on April 30, 2024, around 1600 hours, Lance Corporal Michael Danso, along with two colleagues, Lance Corporals Abdul Omar Rahman and Ametus Matthew, drove to Millennium City Police Station in a Toyota RAV4 to report a trespass.

They had been informed that encroachers were developing land belonging to Lance Corporal Abdul Omar Rahman.

Benlord reportedly arrived at the police station, attacked Lance Corporal Michael Danso, and opened fire, killing him instantly. He was subsequently disarmed and arrested by the police.

Following further investigations, the police also arrested Kwakye.

Ama Governor offers her first oral advocacy in court in defence of #OccupyJulorbi ‘detainees’

Lawyer Elorm Ababio, also known as Ama Governor, gave her first oral advocacy in court in defence of protesters detained by the police during a September 2023 demonstration.

Recently called to the Bar after two previous denials, Ms. Ababio appeared before an Accra High Court this week on behalf of the activist group Democracy Hub and 34 other individuals.

In April 2024, Democracy Hub and 33 other applicants filed a motion to relist their human rights case against the Ghana Police Service, which had been struck out by the High Court (Human Rights Division) due to a lack of prosecution.

The plaintiffs sued the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General, alleging unlawful arrest, torture, and detention of protesters during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration in September 2023.

The motion to relist followed an April 9, 2024, decision by Justice Barbara Tetteh-Charway, who struck out the case after both plaintiffs and respondents failed to appear.

Democracy Hub shared news of Ama Governor’s court representation on their X handle.

“We are happy to announce that Yesterday (June 19) Ms Elorm Ababio @Ama_governor appeared for Democracy Hub and 34 other protestors, who were arrested during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

“This was her first oral advocacy since Ama was called to the Bar. Ama herself was at the protest, and gave an interview which was relied on to further deny her a call to the Bar for the second time

“We are happy that Ama did not forget her fellow protesters at #OccupyJulorbiHouse and came back to represent them. Shows the purity of her spirit!” their post read in part.

  • Bear allegedly kills 58-year old man in Japan

Bear allegedly kills 58-year old man in Japan

A 58-year-old man, Yasuhiro Kobayashi, has been killed in a suspected bear attack in Japan.

Kobayashi, a construction worker, was found in a forest in Nagano Prefecture on Friday afternoon with severe wounds on his head and back, according to a spokesperson from Nagano Central Police Station.

This incident is part of a rising number of bear attacks, as the animals increasingly encroach into populated areas.

Kobayashi was discovered by a colleague who went searching for him after he failed to return to work from a construction site, reported Japanese broadcaster NHK.

The newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported that four people were injured in bear attacks in Nagano this month alone. Authorities in the prefecture have issued stern warnings to residents, advising them to avoid venturing into the mountains at dawn or dusk, when bears are most active.

Residents are also encouraged to travel in groups and carry noise-making items like bells.

Bear sightings and incidents typically peak in April, when bears emerge from hibernation in search of food, and again in September and October as they prepare for winter.

However, reduced acorn yields, a primary food source for bears, have made their movements more unpredictable.

In December, Japan’s environment ministry reported that six people were killed and 212 injured in bear attacks between April and November of the previous year, surpassing the previous record of 158 injuries in the 12 months from April 2020.

In response, a panel appointed by the environment ministry suggested revising hunting laws to permit the use of guns, including tranquilizer guns, against bears entering residential areas.

Currently, firearms can only be used on a bear in a residential property if ordered by police.

Additionally, some municipalities are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to manage the problem. AI-linked cameras can detect bears approaching city centers and notify officials accordingly.

  • Ghana needs patriotic leaders, not unscrupulous leaders to sustain democracy — John Mahama

Ghana needs patriotic leaders, not unscrupulous leaders to sustain democracy — John Mahama

Presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, emphasized the crucial role of patriotic leadership in upholding democracy within a nation.

According to him, regardless of the duration of a country’s democratic practices, the integrity and honesty of its leaders are paramount.

A leader’s commitment to transparency and truthfulness is essential to safeguarding the will of the people and preventing any erosion of democratic principles.

“You can have the best constitution and the best regulation and laws, if an unscrupulous leader decides to take advantage of the situation, the person will do so.

“And if he does and we don’t have the population to push and hold him back, then he will get away with it,” Mr Mahama added.

The former President was delivering a public lecture on the theme: Sustainability of democracy in Africa: The Ghanaian experience,” in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, last Wednesday.

It was organised by the Christian Service University as part of activities marking its golden jubilee celebrations.
    Occurrence

Referring to the United States as a case study, Mr. Mahama pointed out that despite the country’s long-standing democratic traditions spanning more than two centuries, there was a notable incident where former President Donald Trump was able to provoke individuals to storm the Capitol Hill following his electoral defeat in 2020.

He highlighted this event to illustrate how vulnerabilities within even established democracies can be exploited.

Mr. Mahama emphasized that such occurrences could potentially transpire in any nation lacking a steadfast leader genuinely committed to the nation’s welfare and democratic values.

Mr Mahama further said that leadership, such as the Office of the President “are weighty and must be approached with utmost seriousness”.

“Ghanaians are in dire straits and this is not the time for comedy or concert party,” he said.

On the December 7 general election, the former President said that following experiences learnt from the last elections in 2020, the NDC was going into the upcoming poll with its own referee by remaining vigilant to ensure every vote cast for the party was accounted for.

“We will enter the ring with our own referee by taking advantage of every instrument we are afforded to make sure that the vote you cast for me is protected and counted,” he said.

Mr Mahama explained that the reason the NDC always accused the current Electoral Commission (EC) of being in bed with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government was due to its disposition that had consistently shown that it could not be trusted.

“Indeed, it is also a fact that this government concocted reasons to remove the plain Electoral Commissioners and replaced them with people of their choice,” he alleged. Mr Mahama further said that although the President has the power to appoint members of the commission, such members should not be people with known political affiliations.

He argued, however, that certain members of the current commission are influenced by political affiliations, citing one individual who purportedly serves as a patron for a youth organization associated with the NPP called Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON).

“This commission has shown that it cannot be neutral. A commissioner has said that the NDC is a serious existential treat to Ghana’s democracy, and he is still there.

“How do you expect such a person to conduct a free and fair election?” he asked.

Mr Mahama said the NDC was not expecting the EC to rig the elections in their favour, but was only calling for fairness to ensure that the will of the people was respected.

Govt releases GHC 80m to WAEC – Majority Chief Whip announces

Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has made a notable announcement in Parliament revealing that the Ministry of Finance has allocated GH¢80 million to support the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in organizing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

This development comes after concerns voiced by Yusif Sulemana, the Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, regarding the government’s outstanding payments to WAEC.

Initially, WAEC had received only GH¢2.3 million of the required GH¢95.83 million.

The council had requested at least 50% of the total amount to facilitate the BECE and additional funds to manage the examination process and release the results.

Scheduled to occur from July 8 to July 15, 2024, at examination centers nationwide, the BECE faced uncertainty due to financial constraints.

In his address, Frank Annoh-Dompreh reassured Parliament that the full GH¢80 million required for the WAEC examinations had been disbursed.

He affirmed that he had personally followed up on the matter and received confirmation from Minister of State Abena Osei-Asare that the funds had indeed been released.

“You raised an issue about the release to WAEC for the conduct of exams and the respected ranking member gave you copies.

So, myself and the Chief Whip, we followed up and spoke to the Minister of State, Abena Osei-Asare, she got back to the ministry and confirmed that indeed, they have made a significant release.

We are told an amount of 80 million has been released,” Annoh-Dompreh said.

Malawi swears in comedian-turned as vice-president after death of the old

Renowned comedian-turned-politician, Michael Usi, has been sworn in as Malawi’s vice-president during a ceremony in Lilongwe’s parliament.

The 55-year-old takes over from Saulos Chilima, who tragically died in a plane crash earlier this month, along with eight others.

After his inauguration, Dr. Usi received a standing ovation as he expressed his mixed feelings of sadness and gratitude.

He pledged to honor his predecessor’s legacy and thanked President Lazarus Chakwera for his trust in him to serve as vice-president in the coalition government.

Dr. Usi’s appointment has sparked mixed reactions among Malawians. Some have shared clips of his acting career on social media, questioning his seriousness for such a high office.

Conversely, others have commended President Chakwera for respecting the alliance with Chilima’s party by appointing its deputy leader.

Known popularly as “Manganya,” the character he plays in the popular TV sitcom Tikuferanji, Dr. Usi has often been a controversial figure.

Despite his current political role, he was filming an episode just last week, according to his aide.

With over two decades of presence on national radio and television, Dr. Usi is a well-known celebrity in Malawi.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYrlFT0TH0Q

He has also been an advocate for the development of Malawi’s film industry, often struggling financially to make a living in this sector.

Initially funding his acting career through his work as a hospital clinician, he holds a qualification in clinical medicine and a PhD in youth development from the University of Bedfordshire, UK.

Dr. Usi has also worked extensively with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (Adra), where he held various roles, including country director.

Through Adra, he supported educational radio and TV soaps addressing social issues such as HIV.

Despite his commitments at Adra, Dr. Usi continued his acting career and participated in various productions, primarily in the local Chichewa language.

His popularity as a comedian led some to initially perceive his political movement, founded around seven years ago, as a joke.

However, his political ambitions proved genuine, as his movement “Odya zake alibe Mulandu” (he who does not take what belongs to others but only eats what’s his is a free man) eventually merged with Dr. Chilima’s UTM party.

Dr. Usi’s political career gained momentum ahead of the 2019 elections, where he and Dr. Chilima held large rallies together. Dr. Chilima named Dr. Usi as his running mate, highlighting their shared eloquence and ability to draw large crowds.

Namibian court overturns ban on same-sex acts; rights activist rejoice

In a historic victory for gay rights activists, Namibia has declared laws banning same-sex acts between men unconstitutional.

Although convictions for “sodomy” and “unnatural sexual offences”—remnants of colonial rule—were infrequent, these laws perpetuated discrimination and instilled fear of arrest among gay men.

There are no existing laws in Namibia that prohibit sexual relations between women. While same-sex marriage remains illegal within the country, Namibia does recognize the unions of same-sex couples married abroad, provided one partner is not a Namibian citizen.

Following the high court’s decision in Windhoek on Friday, members of the LGBTQ group Equal Namibia shared images of celebratory embraces in the courtroom.

“Welcome to a new Namibia. A born-free Namibia,” the group said on social media.

The term “born-free” was most famously used in neighbouring South Africa to describe the first generation of children growing up in the dawn of democracy after white-minority rule ended in 1994.

‘I no longer feel like a criminal’
This court case was brought by a Namibian activist called Friedel Dausab, with backing from the British charity Human Dignity Trust.

“It won’t be a crime to love anymore,” Mr Dausab said, reacting to the verdict. “I no longer feel like a criminal on the run in my own country simply because of who I am.”

Expressing his feelings, he simply said he was “just happy”. The United Nations has also praised the ruling, describing it as a “powerful step” towards a more inclusive society that would enhance access to health services and HIV treatment.

Amnesty International, fearing backlash from the ruling, has called on the Namibian government to safeguard the safety and dignity of LGBTQ individuals.

The organization noted it had already observed instances of “alarming” and “threatening” rhetoric in the lead-up to the court case.

Namibia, which was first colonized by Germany, achieved independence from South Africa in 1990 after a long and difficult war.

In recent years, several African countries have repealed anti-LGBTQ laws, but South Africa remains the only nation on the continent where same-sex couples can marry and adopt children.

Tourist dragged from police station, lynched, burned to death in Pakistan for blasphemy

In north-west Pakistan, a tourist was forced out of police station and killed by a mob after being accused of blasphemy.

The incident occurred in the town of Madyan, Swat district, where the police had been attempting to protect the man from the large crowd that had gathered after he was accused of desecrating the Quran on Thursday.

Lynchings are not uncommon in Pakistan following accusations of blasphemy, which can carry the death penalty. Last month, a Christian man was similarly attacked and killed after being accused of burning pages of the Quran.

Video footage of this latest incident has sparked outrage on social media in Pakistan, showing the victim’s body being paraded through the streets before being set on fire. Police confirmed that the tourist was “torched” and reported that 11 people were injured, including eight officers.

Malakand division’s regional police chief, Mohammad Ali Gandapur, accused a local mosque of inciting the mob after police had initially rescued the man, who was visiting the Swat Valley, a popular summer destination.

Dr. Zahidullah, a police officer in the Swat region, told BBC Urdu that police made significant efforts to clear blocked roads and disperse the angry crowd on Thursday night.

Authorities have opened a case against hundreds of people involved in the incident, some as young as 13, and have deployed additional security forces to the region.

Hotels in the town, previously full, are now seeing tourists scrambling to leave.

Violence fueled by religious accusations has increased in Pakistan since blasphemy was made a crime punishable by death in the 1980s, a law originally established under British rule in the 19th century. Even baseless accusations can provoke protests and mob violence against the alleged offenders.

Human rights critics argue that minorities are often targeted by such accusations. Approximately 96% of Pakistan’s population is Muslim, and other countries like Iran, Brunei, and Mauritania also impose capital punishment for insulting religion.

They were joined by sports broadcaster Dan Kwaku Yeboah and other notable figures for the friendly game.

In a video shared online, Laryea and Sulley lined up for a free kick, reminiscent of their national team days.

However, Laryea’s attempt was saved by the goalkeeper, much to Sulley’s amusement.

Among the quartet, Sulley Muntari retired most recently, while Laryea Kingston has transitioned into coaching.

Derek Boateng currently serves as a scout for Right To Dream, and Charles Taylor has taken on punditry duties at Angel FM since retiring from professional football.
