2024 polls: “We have been ready for years” – IGP Dampare assures public

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has assured the public of the Ghana Police Service’s preparedness to oversee security operations throughout the upcoming December 7 general elections.

He conveyed this commitment during a gathering at Accra’s Alisa Hotel on Thursday, July 4, where he engaged with a distinguished group organized by the Christian Council of Ghana.

Dr. Dampare underscored that the police, alongside other security agencies within the National Election Security Task Force, have implemented robust measures to institutionalize and integrate election security in recent years.

This effort has contributed significantly to ensuring peaceful and secure electoral processes.

He emphasized the proactive stance of the police in treating local elections as matters of national importance, ensuring adequate security measures are in place.

He reassured Ghanaians of a peaceful process, stating, “We have been ready for years because we have institutionalised and mainstreamed election security for the first time in the history of this country.

Elections are not seen as events but as a process in a cycle where the end of one is the beginning of another.”

The IGP also noted the success of recent elections, including internal party elections, saying, “All the elections for the past almost three years, including internal elections of the parties, the selection of parliamentary candidates, and presidential candidates, have been historically secure.

This is an indication of our readiness, working in concert with security forces and more importantly, with patriotic Ghanaians who want to see the country remain at peace.”

He additionally highlighted the significance of professionalism and adopting a de-escalation approach in managing conflicts, emphasizing that the police’s actions should be justified and focused on preserving peace and security for the welfare of forthcoming generations.

For the 2024 elections, we are ensuring a clear de-escalation mindset amid confusion and agitations. We need to be professional and ensure that we settle issues among the conflicting parties in a way that unites them,” he added.

GSS predicts increased congestion in Accra by 2030

By 2030, Accra, Ghana’s vibrant capital, is anticipated to face increased congestion due to substantial population growth, as indicated by recent findings from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The GSS’s latest projections for 2021 to 2050 reveal a significant rise in population throughout the Greater Accra region.

As of 2024, Ghana’s projected population surpasses 33 million, marking an increase from 30.8 million in 2021.

In the coming years, the Greater Accra Region is expected to accommodate a growing number of school-age children, projected to reach 2.96 million by 2030.

Moreover, the youth population aged 15 to 24 years is anticipated to nearly double in size.

Dr. Faustina Frempong, Deputy Government Statistician, who presented the data, emphasized the need for government intervention in managing the rapid population growth within the Greater Accra region, which is constrained by limited land space.

These population projections aim to provide insights into future demographic trends, aiding policymakers, researchers, and the public in understanding potential developments and facilitating the achievement of national, continental, and global development objectives, according to the GSS.

Andre Ayew is currently a free agent after his loan spell at Le Havre ended in June 2024. He finished the previous season as the club’s top scorer in the French Ligue 1, significantly contributing to their survival in the league.

Jordan Ayew, who lost his starting position towards the end of last season, aims to reclaim his spot in the upcoming campaign.

Labour Bank: TUC to set-up bank to support its members

Trade Union Congress (TUC) has announced its intention to establish a Ghana Labour Bank.

This bank will offer soft loans to all members of the Trade Union Congress.

Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of TUC, announced this initiative during the 11th Quadrennial Conference of the GPRTU held in Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region on Thursday July 4, 2024.

“Yesterday, the TUC General Council met, and we have agreed that we are going to set up a Ghana Labour Bank”.

“The Labour Bank will serve two purposes by providing loans for our members so that you can either procure a house or purchase a vehicle,” he explained.

One of the numerous financial related challenges members of the Union are currently facing is the high interest rates.

TUC members face challenges of  accessing due to the high-interest rates charged by traditional financial institutions.

This makes it difficult for workers to afford borrowing, limiting their ability to finance personal and business needs.

Also, many union members, particularly those in lower-income brackets, struggle to access credit due to stringent requirements imposed by banks.

This includes the need for collateral, which many workers do not possess.

Consequently, the TUChas taken this decision to complement efforts of banks in issuing loans to workers.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Ghana is the main umbrella organization for trade unions in the country.

It represents the collective interests of its member unions, advocating for workers’ rights, fair wages, and better working conditions.

The TUC engages in negotiations with employers and the government to secure favorable terms for workers and plays a crucial role in shaping labor policies in Ghana.

AFCON 2025 qualifiers: Ghana to take on Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan

Ex-Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah, is set to confront his former team, Ghana, as he guides Sudan in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In the recent draw held in Johannesburg, South Africa, Ghana was grouped in Group F alongside Sudan, Angola, and Niger.

Ghana, positioned in Pot 1 alongside Africa’s top-ranked teams, prepares to navigate familiar rivals on their path to securing a spot in the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Formerly leading Ghana to the 2019 AFCON, Appiah now aims to make a significant impact with Sudan, who have shown strong form in recent competitive fixtures.

Under Appiah’s leadership, Sudan currently leads Group B in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, ahead of past AFCON champions Senegal, DR Congo, Togo, South Sudan, and Mauritania.

With four matches played, Sudan sits at the top, demonstrating their potential on the continental stage.

The Sudanese team seeks to replicate their World Cup qualifying success as they strive for their 10th AFCON appearance.

Despite a rich history in the tournament, including their 1970 championship, recent editions have posed challenges, with their last appearance ending in the Group Stage in Cameroon 2021.

Meanwhile, Ghana pursues their fifth AFCON title, last claiming victory over four decades ago. The Black Stars view their group as a promising opportunity to secure their 25th AFCON participation, leveraging their strong position in African football.

With both teams eager to assert their prowess, the upcoming clash between Ghana and Sudan promises a captivating showdown, highlighting the competitive intensity of African football.

  • Australian senator steps down after controversy over her vote on Gaza

Australian senator steps down after controversy over her vote on Gaza

Senator Fatima Payman has chosen to step down from Australia’s governing Labor Party, a decision that follows her recent support for a motion advocating for Palestinian statehood (Gaza) against her party’s stance.

The Labor Party imposes strict penalties for members who diverge from its official policies, and Senator Payman had previously faced an “indefinite suspension” from the party’s caucus after indicating her intention to defy the party line again.

“This is a matter I cannot compromise on,” the 29-year-old said on Thursday, adding that she was “deeply torn” over the decision.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Ms. Payman expressed gratitude for his leadership and refuted claims of coercion leading to her resignation. Ms. Payman has chosen to join the crossbench as an independent senator.

As Australia’s inaugural federal politician to wear a hijab, the 29-year-old lawmaker comes from a family that sought refuge in Australia following Afghanistan’s takeover by the Taliban in 1996.

“Unlike my colleagues, I know how it feels to be on the receiving end of injustice. My family did not flee a war-torn country to come here as refugees for me to remain silent when I see atrocities inflicted on innocent people,” she said during a press conference on her resignation.

The conflict in Gaza has become a volatile political issue in Australia that all sides have sought to carefully manage.
Officially the government favours a two-state solution, but it did not back the motion on statehood after trying – and failing – to insert a condition that any recognition should be “as part of a peace process”.

The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy the Hamas group which runs Gaza in response to an unprecedented Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October, during which about 1,200 people were killed, and 251 others were taken hostage.

More than 37,900 people have been killed in Gaza since then, including 28 over the past 24 hours, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Ms Payman said that since crossing the Senate floor to vote with the Greens party last Tuesday she had received “immense support” from some colleagues, and “pressure… to toe the party line” from others. She also reported receiving “death threats and emails that were quite confronting” from members of the public.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who handed down the indefinite suspension on Sunday, had repeatedly said Ms Payman could rejoin the caucus – where MPs discuss the government’s agenda – if she was willing to participate “as a team player”.

But in a statement earlier this week, Ms Payman said she had been “exiled” by Labor – explaining that she had been removed from meetings, group chats and all committees.

  • Jeff Bezos announces intentions to sell another $5 billion in Amazon stock

Founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, has announced plans to sell an additional 25 million shares of the tech giant, valued at nearly $5 billion.

This decision follows a peak in the company’s stock market value earlier this week.

Earlier this year, Bezos had disclosed intentions to sell Amazon shares worth approximately $8.5 billion, marking his first such move since 2021.

Amazon’s stock has surged over 30% in 2024, driven by expectations of increased demand for artificial intelligence technologies, particularly benefiting its cloud computing division.

Last month, Amazon’s market capitalization exceeded $2 trillion for the first time, although it still trails behind Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft, each surpassing the $3 trillion mark.

Amazon recently reported strong quarterly earnings, underscoring the success of its AI investments.

Bezos, who founded Amazon in 1994 from a garage in Bellevue, Washington, now serves as its executive chair and remains its largest shareholder.

Apart from Amazon, he also established Blue Origin, a space exploration firm that successfully launched six customers to the edge of space in May.

According to Forbes’ Billionaires list, Bezos ranks as the world’s second wealthiest individual with an estimated net worth of around $214 billion.

Lazio raise transfer offer for Man Utd’s Mason Greenwood

Lazio have upped their bid for Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood, though it falls short of his asking price. Juventus have cooled their interest, leaving the Serie A club in pole position.

Spanish teams, where Greenwood shone on loan at Getafe, are considering alternatives.

United are ready to sell Greenwood, seeing no future for him at Old Trafford. They’re seeking around €50 million (£42m/$54m), a sum many clubs find prohibitive.

Sportitalia reports Lazio have crafted a €25m (£21m/$27m) deal with a hefty sell-on clause, potentially up to 50%.

Sky Sport Italia notes Marseille are also contenders from Ligue 1.

Greenwood, capped once by England, is reportedly open to moving to France, eager to settle his future swiftly for a fresh challenge.

A 3rd marriage ceremony for former City’s winger Riyad Mahrez

Former Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez recently celebrated his third wedding ceremony with his model wife Taylor Ward, this time in Italy.

The 33-year-old winger now plays for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.

Ward had previously shared the challenges of moving from England to the Middle East, but the couple has settled into their new life.

Mahrez proposed to Ward in 2021 with a £400,000 ring during a trip to the Greek island of Mykonos.

They first married in a Muslim ceremony in January 2022 and then held a London-based event in September 2023.

Their latest celebration of love took place at Villa Balbiani near Lake Como, a luxurious property featuring a swimming pool, private pier, and boathouse, providing ample space for guests to enjoy the outdoor ceremony.

X Factor winner Leona Lewis performed at the event, where guests danced into the night.

Ward was escorted down the aisle by her father Ashley to the song ‘You Are The Reason’ by Callum Scott, with the venue adorned with hundreds of white roses.

  • Euro 2024: Phil Foden worried about Southgate; he says he ‘feels sorry’

Euro 2024: Phil Foden worried about Southgate; he says he ‘feels sorry’

Phil Foden has expressed his sympathy for Gareth Southgate, stating that the England players should shoulder the blame for their disappointing Euro 2024 performances.

With a quarter-final against Switzerland approaching, the team is under intense pressure to improve following their underwhelming showing in the tournament’s early stages.

Although their dramatic victory over Slovakia on Sunday offered some relief from criticism, the focus is now on delivering a stronger performance against Switzerland.

Foden openly acknowledged England’s struggles and empathized with Southgate, stressing that the players need to take more responsibility on the field and that the manager should not be held solely accountable for the team’s poor displays.

Talking to reporters, Foden said: “I feel sorry for Gareth. In training, he has been telling us to press and be high up on the pitch.

Sometimes it has to come from the players. We have to be leaders and I feel like in games we could have got together more and worked out a solution. We have spoken about it more and if it happens again we can find a solution and adapt our press.

“The players have to take some of the blame. There has to be some leaders to get together. There is only so much the manager can do. He sets you up in a system and tells you how to press.

You never decide when a person is going to drop deep as well. The players have to adapt to what the other team is doing to be better. Hopefully, you will see a different side to us pressing wise.”

Southgate has voiced worries about the fitness of his squad, particularly concerning key players such as John Stones, who has been managing injuries.

Stones was observed with strapping on his right knee during training, heightening concerns about his readiness to play. Despite these obstacles, Foden maintains a positive outlook on England’s chances against Switzerland.

“You can prepare for a game but you can’t prepare for players moving out of position and making it awkward for you. Hopefully, going into this game we can get it right,” he said.

England’s path through Euro 2024 has been rocky, yet there’s optimism that the early matches’ lessons will translate into a better performance in the knockout rounds.

Foden’s candidness about the team’s flaws shows a mature attitude toward tackling their problems. As they gear up to face Switzerland, the emphasis is on unity, tactical precision, and a strong resolve to progress further in the tournament.

  • Euro 2024: The results are obvious – Lamine Yamal hits back after Spain’s label as a ‘team of kids’

Euro 2024: The results are obvious – Lamine Yamal hits back after Spain’s label as a ‘team of kids’

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has hit back at comments from Jens Lehmann in which Spain’s squad at Euro 2024 were branded a “team of kids”.

Former Germany international goalkeeper Lehmann made that jibe ahead of his nation facing La Roja in the quarter-finals of this summer’s European Championship.

The ex-Arsenal star said during an appearance on Welt TV: “We’ve seen the good results [Spain] have had, without doubt, in the group phase.

In terms of technique, they might be better than us. But they’re small in terms of height, and they’re inexperienced. They’re a team of kids. They have very young players. They don’t have much international experience.”

Spain only have seven players under the age of 25 in their squad, including 16-year-old Barcelona wonderkid Yamal.

The record-breaking youngster told reporters when being made aware of Lehmann’s “kids” claim: “Well, we’ve already said that all these things help us to come out more motivated.

In the end, what is he going to say? He is German, he is going to want to help his national team but, well, it will be seen on the pitch that we will show whether we are small and inexperienced.”

Lehmann’s comments have not been well received in the Germany camp, with World Cup winner Toni Kroos – who is preparing to head into retirement – saying of his fellow countryman: “Lehmann does not represent us. He always has a different opinion than others.

They have shown that they have players with experience: [Alvaro] Morata, Rodri, Nacho, [Dani] Carvajal. It’s not true what he says, we expect a very top Spain team. They play very well, but so do we. I am looking forward to a beautiful game.”

Spain and Germany are gearing up for a high-stakes quarter-final clash on Friday. This matchup, worthy of a final considering both teams’ stellar performances, will see only one advancing to the semi-finals to face either France or Portugal.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo faces accusations of ‘ambush marketing’ at Euro 2024

Cristiano Ronaldo faces accusations of ‘ambush marketing’ at Euro 2024

A former sponsorship head has called for Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to be punished by UEFA for alleged “ambush marketing” at Euro 2024.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, currently participating in the European Championship, had a dramatic recent match. He missed a stoppage-time penalty in a last-16 clash with Slovenia, leaving him in tears, but later converted in a tense shootout.

Ronaldo is collaborating with fitness company WHOOP, which has released data from wearable devices monitoring his heart rate, athletic performance, and sleep score.

According to the data, Ronaldo “entered a flow state and dropped his heart rate” when taking the first penalty for Portugal, with his heart rate spiking to 180 bpm when Bernardo Silva scored the decisive spot-kick.

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VWazEQyuwnY

Ricardo Fort, former global sponsorship head at Visa and Coca-Cola, alleges that Ronaldo has violated UEFA regulations.

He posted on social media: “Cristiano and WHOOP is ambush marketing to Euro 2024. It is illegal and both the player and the company should be fined.”

He added: “The post is about a UEFA matches, uses the names of the two national teams playing, score, and a player on the field. They are implying an association with the event and that is illegal. Not having ‘a competitor as a sponsor’ isn’t a reason to tolerate infringements.”

If the data had been collected during home workouts, there would be no issue. UEFA has previously acted against “ambush marketing,” as seen when former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner received an £80,000 fine and a one-game ban for revealing Paddy Power-branded underpants after scoring for Denmark at Euro 2012.

  • Confirmed: Erik ten Hag’s contract extended by Man Utd until 2026

Confirmed: Erik ten Hag’s contract extended by Man Utd until 2026

Man Utd have confirmed the extension of Erik ten Hag’s contract as manager until 2026. This vote of confidence from United’s new minority owners, INEOS, comes a month after they ended the search for a new manager.

United have activated the extension on Ten Hag’s original three-year contract, which means he will continue on the same terms without a salary increase.

The club is also in the process of assembling a new coaching staff for Ten Hag, with legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy being considered for a position.

“I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together. Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined,” Ten Hag said.

“However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.

In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together.”

“With two trophies in the past two seasons, Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football,” said Dan Ashworth, United’s new sporting director.

“While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas for improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards and outcomes.

This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level; now we need to do it more consistently.

With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club.”

United conducted a thorough search for a new manager after a significant decline in their performance towards the end of last season, resulting in their lowest-ever Premier League finish, ending eighth.

The club considered Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, Mauricio Pochettino, and Thomas Frank, and engaged in serious discussions with Thomas Tuchel, before ultimately deciding that Ten Hag was the best fit for the role.

Ten Hag’s leadership in guiding United to victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City played a crucial part in their decision to give him another opportunity to set things right.

Currently, Ten Hag is serving as a pundit for Dutch broadcaster NOS during Euro 2024, but he will soon begin preparing for United’s pre-season campaign.

This kicks off on July 15 with a friendly against Rosenborg in Norway. The Red Devils will also play against Rangers before heading to the United States, where they will face Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool.

Additionally, they will meet City again at Wembley in the Community Shield before starting their Premier League campaign against Fulham on August 16.

“No matter how the NDC opposes it, we will force it on them” – Afenyo-Markin on Free SHS Bill

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has issued a stern warning that any efforts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to oppose the Free SHS Bill will not be tolerated.

He emphasized that, similar to previous bills that faced strong opposition, the majority in parliament will ensure the Free SHS Bill is passed regardless of the challenges.

The Majority Leader reiterated that the bill will surely be passed, even if it means forcing it on the minority.

“The ranking member on the education committee, Nortsue-Kotoe, said they will not support the bill, so it is fair to say that the NDC does not support the Free SHS Bill,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He added, “There is no fear of anything. We only want to enact the law to bind all of us and build a new national psyche that free SHS is not negotiable. No matter how the NDC opposes it, we will force it on them.”

Afenyo-Markin expressed these views during an interview on Onua FM’s ‘Yen Nsempa’ on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, in response to comments made by the Ranking Member on the education committee, Nortsue-Kotoe.

This comes after NDC’s Nortsue-Kotoe criticized the NPP government’s claim of prioritizing education, arguing that a government that owes money to school uniform suppliers cannot boast of prioritizing the country’s education sector.

“As we speak now, the government owes monies to those who supplied school uniforms two to three years ago to senior high school students. They owe monies to people who supplied textbooks and furniture to senior high schools. So, what are they trying to say?” he questioned.

If enacted, the Free SHS Bill would make the Free SHS policy legally binding on all successive governments, ensuring that no future administration could discontinue it.

  • M4C has just 32 hours more to ‘live’ – NAPO’s camp reacts ahead of announcement as running mate

M4C has just 32 hours more to ‘live’ – NAPO’s camp reacts ahead of announcement as running mate

Constituency Organizer for Manhyia South, Alhaji Abubakar Alhasan, known as Aboba, has revealed that the unveiling of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), will mark a significant return of members from the Movement for Change back to the party.

According to him, this event, which will also introduce the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, is set to take place on Tuesday, July 10, 2024, at Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region.

Alhaji Abubakar Alhasan emphasized on Abusua 96.5 FM’s Abusua Nkomo show with host Kojo Marfo that the Movement for Change, previously separated from the NPP, will face internal challenges immediately following the endorsement by the National Council of the NPP.

“In the next 32 hours, when the National Council endorses the candidate, the Movement for Change will implode.

The only persons who will remain with Allan Kyerematen will be his confidants, like Joseph Amoah and the KNUST political science lecturer, Dr. Akwasi Amakye Boateng.”

“The members of the Movement have already spoken extensively with us behind closed doors and told us they are excited that one of their own has been chosen to partner with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They are willing to return to the party,” Aboba stated.

He also revealed that before the grand event at Jubilee Park, the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, will be introduced to and seek the blessing of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

NAPO, as he is fondly known, will also be taken on a procession through the main streets of Kumasi before arriving at Jubilee Park.

Abubakar Alhasan debunked assertions that President Akufo-Addo had reservations about the choice of NAPO, insisting, “Per my information, the president commended Dr. Bawumia for presenting the very name he was waiting for.”

“The name of the flagbearer’s choice was packaged and sealed in a special luxurious envelope deliberately imported from Dubai and presented to the president,” he boasted.

Sources within the National Council indicate that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will proceed with the process to declare the Manhyia parliamentary candidacy vacant immediately after Thursday’s council meeting, allowing interested individuals to contest.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who doubles as the NPP’s flagbearer, has formally nominated Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, as his preferred running mate for the upcoming December 2024 presidential election.

Dr. Bawumia made this announcement following a crucial meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House, where he informed the President of his choice.

Prior to the meeting, several names were speculated as potential running mates, but Dr. Opoku Prempeh, the current Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, emerged as the favored candidate.

The stakes are high for both the ruling NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NPP aims to secure a third consecutive term in office, while the NDC seeks to avoid a third consecutive electoral defeat.

Upon unveiling, Dr. Opoku Prempeh will compete against Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of opposition flagbearer John Mahama.

Both candidates have previous experience serving as education ministers, and their respective records in the education sector will be pivotal during the campaign.

My ministers would be appointed from both NPP, NDC parties – Alan Kyerematen

Leader of the Movement for Change and an independent presidential aspirant, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has announced his intention to appoint half of his ministers from Parliament, drawing specifically from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Emphasizing a commitment to constitutional mandates, Mr. Kyerematen stressed that his ministerial selections would prioritize individual merit over political allegiance.

These remarks were made during a radio interview in Accra on Wednesday July 3, 2024.

“I hear people asking, how are you going to get your ministers but that is very simple.

I am saying that I will pick ministers from the two parties that are represented in Parliament and if there are other parties that will make it to Parliament, I also have the flexibility to pick independent candidates,” Mr. Kyerematen stated.

“I am picking them not because they are NPP or NDC. I will pick them on the basis of their own individual merits.

It is just that they are in Parliament and I am required by the constitution to pick at least half of my ministers from Parliament.”

  • Atta Mills’ 2009 SONA was the inspiration behind the idea of procuring ambulances – Jakpa

Atta Mills’ 2009 SONA was the inspiration behind the idea of procuring ambulances – Jakpa

Ghanaian entrepreneur Richard Jakpa has disclosed the origins of the government’s ambulance procurement, which has sparked controversy and legal proceedings. The Attorney General has alleged that Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson caused financial loss amounting to 2.3 million Euros through the purchase of allegedly sub-standard ambulances, with Mr. Jakpa being the third accused in the case.

Mr. Jakpa has countered these claims, accusing the Attorney General of conducting a witch-hunt against Dr. Forson. In an interview with JoyNews’ Elton Brobbey on ‘The Pulse’, Mr. Jakpa detailed the steps leading to his involvement with Big Sea Company Limited to facilitate the deal on behalf of the government.

According to him, “the blueprint, everything emanated from me because I am an entrepreneur.

“The first State of the Nation Address (SONA) by Atta Mills, spoke about the lack of ambulances in the country. And it was serious and that was one of his priorities. So as soon as I heard it, as an entrepreneur, I immediately put the team together and tasked them to go across the country to find out the state of ambulances.

“They went round, they spent some time and we realised we had about 34 ambulances or so in the country. And that was serious. So we put together a proposal,” he said.

He said he contacted his bank at the time and secured suitable financial arrangements and then proceeded to present the proposal to secure ambulances for the Health Ministry which included a loan facility.

“And luckily for me, I was able to convince the bank. They sought approval from the underwriters in South Africa. It was approved and then they ring-fenced the 15.8 million euros for this project. And gave me the term sheets. They signed it nice, it was signed.

So I attached it to the proposal, and then wrote officially to the Ministry of Health… Their own is a technical specification of the ambulance but the financial term sheet is not within their domain, it’s for the Minister of Finance.

“So, therefore, they sent the whole document to the Minister of Finance and they copied my company that the health [Ministry] was interested because it wasn’t going to be a burden on the budget. It will be three years to pay and there’s even a moratorium, so it was easy for them.

So as soon as they copied my company, then I realized that the government was interested, health was interested and they only wanted Finance advice on term sheets, which falls under the domain of finance. So as soon as we got a letter we said okay, then we’re in business. We started scouting out for manufacturers, who had our technical specification,” he explained.

Following this initial phase, Mr. Jakpa’s exploration led him to Big Sea Company Limited, where negotiations were finalized in 2011.

He explained that while he initially became Big Sea’s agent in Ghana, their attention to detail eventually led them to engage Jakpa@Business for all their operations across West Africa, except Nigeria.

What a yellow card means at Euro 2024, check out the status of your favourite player

As Euro 2024 progresses, the presence of yellow cards threatens key players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jude Bellingham, and Kylian Mbappe with potential suspensions.

Maintaining discipline is pivotal in football tournaments, ensuring top athletes remain available throughout. Yet, amidst the physical demands and trials of new rules limiting referee interactions to captains, yellow and occasional red cards are inevitable.

Here’s an overview of Euro 2024’s yellow card suspension regulations and the players potentially facing exclusion from the semi-finals.

At Euro 2024, the yellow card rules and suspensions are straightforward: A player receiving two yellow cards faces a one-match suspension.

However, it’s crucial to understand that yellow cards accumulated during the group stage, round of 16, and quarter-finals are reset before the semi-finals.

This means that players carrying yellow cards into the quarter-finals can relax once they advance, as these cautions won’t carry over. The only scenario where a player would miss the final is if they receive a red card in the semi-final.

Several other key players, including Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo, and Kieran Trippier, are also walking a disciplinary tightrope with yellow card cautions. Another booking in the quarter-final would see them suspended for the potential semi-final match.

Captain Kylian Mbappe is carrying a yellow card into the quarter-final and will have to be careful not to get booked again or else he will be ruled out of the semi-final.

As well as Mbappe, Didier Deschamps will be mindful of the fact that Antoine Griezmann, Aurelien Tchouameni and Ousmane Dembele are all on yellow cards too.

  • Gayton McKenzie, the gangster turned Sports Minister in South Africa

Gayton McKenzie, the gangster turned Sports Minister in South Africa

Former gangster and bank robber Gayton McKenzie, who transformed into a nightclub owner and opposition politician, has now been appointed as South Africa’s minister of sports, arts, and culture.

President Cyril Ramaphosa selected Mr. McKenzie, leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), for the position in the new multi-party government announced on Sunday, following the African National Congress (ANC) losing its parliamentary majority in the May 29 election.

A prolific tweeter, the 50-year-od relished his appointment, posting a photo of himself putting on football boots and, with a touch of humour, typed: “Thank you for all the well wishing messages, I will reply shortly I’m just busy getting ready, I have work to do 🥅 ⚽️.”

For Mr. McKenzie’s admirers, his appointment is a testament to how he overcame adversity to achieve success. He robbed his first bank before turning 16, became a fully-fledged gangster, and spent seven years in prison.

Following his release, he vowed to change his ways.

However, the nightclub he owned was later shut down, as was a branch in Cape Town registered in his name, following legal action over alleged unpaid rent and electricity, according to the IOL news site.

“I’m not interested in clubbing. I’m busy with other projects. We killed the Zar brand – there are no future plans [for Zar],” Mr McKenzie was quoted as saying at the time.

Nowadays, he is better known as a politician, having launched the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in 2013 with Mr. Kunene as his deputy. More than a decade later, the party secured 2% of the national vote and performed even better in the provincial elections in the Western Cape, achieving 8%.

The party’s support primarily came from the coloured community, as people of mixed race are referred to in South Africa.

The PA’s signature slogan is “Ons baiza nie”, an Afrikaans phrase which loosely translates as “We are not scared”. Afrikaans is widely spoken in the coloured community, which makes up around 8% of South Africa’s population.

“For the first time there is coloured people also going to parliament through the Patriotic Alliance. We are the only party that takes all races to parliament,” Mr McKenzie said, after the results were announced.

Political analyst Kagiso Pooe told the BBC that Mr McKenzie had a “bravado” style, which appeals to his constituency.

“People want to believe and see someone that comes from their type of background and isn’t shy to say: ‘This is who I am.’ You see it with people like President Zuma, President Trump and other such personalities,” he said.

Mr McKenzie’s campaign against undocumented migrants was a vote-winner for him, the analyst added.

“Unfortunately, mainstream politicians and parties have shied away from this and he tackles it directly.”

Critics denounced his campaign as xenophobic. He waged it under the slogan “Abahambe”, which he has translated from the Zulu as “Let them go” – and, in a publicity stunt, he visited the border with Zimbabwe to chase away people trying to enter South Africa.

He faced accusations of hypocrisy, as critics highlighted a 2013 SABC interview where he described immigrants from other parts of Africa, including Zimbabwe, as an “integral” part of South Africa’s economy. In the same interview, he controversially stated, “the problem with us is – black people I’m talking about here – we are lazy.”

As Mr. Ramaphosa began negotiations for a coalition government, Mr. McKenzie publicly expressed his desire for his deputy to run the home affairs ministry, which oversees immigration. He also sought the police ministry for himself, arguing that his previous life as a gangster uniquely positioned him to address South Africa’s high crime rate.

“None of them [other politicians] are equipped to deal with the mafias, with the murder rates we are seeing. South Africa needs me,” he was quoted as saying by the TimesLive news site.

He was unperturbed when he failed to get the post, saying he had in fact asked for the sports ministry in “off-the-record” negotiations with the ANC.
“Sport can be used to change children’s lives. A child in sport is a child out of court,” he said.

“There’s one promise I’ve made: I will make spinning [of cars] one of the biggest sports in this country,” he added in a live Facebook post.

Car spinning is a recognised motorsport in South Africa – it involves vehicles being driven in circles and a driver climbing out to perform stunts.

But there are many unregulated events and as IOL sports journalist John Goliath wrote, stigma still surrounds it as a lot of people in the coloured, Indian and black townships often do spinning in the streets, which is viewed as dangerous.

“The spinning of tyres started in the townships as a ritual to honour fallen gangsters during the apartheid era,” he said.

Mr McKenzie has promised to make it possible for car spinning to take place in a safe environment, and to help keep young people away from gangsterism and drugs.
“The spinners will be recognised,” he said, adding: “When a boy has an interest in cars, he doesn’t have time for drugs. He just worries about his car.”

But Mr Ramaphosa’s decision to give Mr Mckenzie a seat in his cabinet is politically risky, as he is at the centre of an investigation ordered by the Western Cape government. It is controlled by the Democratic Alliance (DA), a fierce political rival of the PA, although they are now partners in Mr Ramaphosa’s government.

Until last year, Mr McKenzie was the mayor of Central Karoo, and was accused of failing to account for 3m rand ($161,000, £127,000) raised at a glitzy gala dinner in 2022 to improve public services, including repairing swimming pools and replacing bucket toilets.

According to local media, a court ordered him last month – just weeks before his promotion to the cabinet – to declare certain financial records to investigators.

While the PA described the ruling as “flawed”, the DA welcomed it, saying Mr McKenzie would “soon learn that corruption does not pay off”.

The DA kept up the pressure by picketing last week in the small town of Beaufort West, which is part of Central Karoo, to demand answers about the money.

Mr McKenzie said in a post on X that he intended to visit the area to give “feedback”.

“The truth shall come out. I have nothing to hide,” he said, adding: “Lies have short legs.”

“I might have had 12 rand in my pocket but I had billion rand in my mind. And that is what people do not understand – they concentrate on what they lack instead of how to get what they lack,” he said in a 2013 interview with public broadcaster SABC.

He became a highly paid motivational speaker and authored several books about his life, including “A Hustler’s Bible.” He also ventured into various businesses, ranging from mining in Zimbabwe to running nightclubs in South Africa, partnering with Kenny Kunene, his close friend from prison.

Mr. Kunene gained the nickname “Sushi King” after his extravagant 40th birthday party at the Zar Lounge nightclub in a wealthy Johannesburg suburb, where sushi was served on the bodies of women dressed only in their underwear.

Ivan Toney reveals his fury at being tagged a substitute after role in Bellingham’s bicycle kick

England striker Ivan Toney has emphasized his crucial role in Jude Bellingham’s last-minute equalizer against Slovakia at Euro 2024.

Bellingham’s acrobatic effort saved England from elimination, pushing the round of 16 match into extra time, where Harry Kane scored the winning goal to secure a quarter-final spot for the Three Lions.

While the headlines focused on the Real Madrid and Bayern Munich stars, Toney insists his contribution as a late substitute just before the equalizer was vital.

“I feel we do a lot at club football,” Toney said. “If you can’t get the ball you [do something else]. I pulled the defender away. Take nothing away from Jude… a run is not a wasted run even if you don’t get the ball.”

Toney’s stoppage time introduction was his first appearance at Euro 2024, having been left on the bench for their three group stage matches.

However, the Brentford star is not happy with being labelled a substitute, preferring to call himself a finisher.

“Yes, I was annoyed but there was still 30 minutes of football to play [including extra-time] and you have got to come out of that mood and focus,” he told reporters.

“I feel like people call them substitutes, others finishers. I think you have to be ready and there’s more than 11 players needed to win a tournament.”

Toney hopes that England manager Gareth Southgate will once again call on him as a substitute in the quarter-final match against Switzerland on Saturday, as the team aims to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

Bayern Munich signs Fulham’s João Palhinha in new €56 million deal – Sources

Bayern Munich and Fulham have reportedly reached a preliminary agreement valued at up to €56 million ($60.4m) for the transfer of midfielder João Palhinha, sources have revealed.

This deal marks a record sale for Fulham, with €51m guaranteed upfront and an additional €5m in potential add-ons. The 28-year-old is expected to commit to a four-year contract.

Currently with the Portugal squad preparing for their Euro 2024 quarterfinal against France, Palhinha is anticipated to finalize the transfer only after the conclusion of his national team’s tournament journey.

This move concludes Bayern’s persistent pursuit of Palhinha, which initially faltered last year due to Fulham’s difficulties in securing a replacement.

Despite a previous failed attempt when Palhinha was poised for a medical in Germany, it appears he will now achieve the transfer he has long desired.

Speaking last weekend, Palhinha said: “As far as my future is concerned, both clubs know where I want to be in a month. I am currently concentrating on my work with the national team and on making history for my country.”

Palhinha joined Fulham from Sporting CP in 2022 and made 79 appearances for the Cottagers, winning their Player of the Year award in his opening season.

More taxes: Bank of Ghana is broke, Ghanaians to pay for it – Sammy Gyamfi

National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has reiterated government’s intention to introduce what he describes as Bank of Ghana (BoG) recapitalization tax.

An add-on to it’s about fifty taxes introduced since his assuming office in 2017.

During an interview with TV3’s Captain Smart on Onua TV’s Maakye Show, he revealed that, government plans introduce a levy to aid the recapitalization of the Central Bank. Nobody he said would be excluded he added.

“They will call it Bank of Ghana (BoG) recapitalization levy. They would add it to your VAT, everyone would be made to pay.

As they have printed money and spent it recklessly among themselves, they are coming tax, trotro drivers, fisherfolks, among other informal sector workers to raise money to go fix their self induced mess” he noted.

He went on to slam the government over the huge sum of money pumped into the new Bank of Ghana headquarters which is currently still under construction.

Highlighting the incompetence of the incumbent government and the deteriorating value of the Ghana Cedi against the dollar, he jabbed that,

“Amid this they have awarded a contract in dollars, $250 million when they are after people charging in dollars because they aren’t even confidence in their ability to sustain the dollar hence they have awarded a contract in dollars which is equivalent to GHS 3 billion” he added.

He went on to express his frustration over the perceived misuse of public funds.

“You just can’t make sense of this, its become so cheap, that everyone is dipping their hands into state coffers. So Akufo-Addo did you come to solve Ghana’s problems or you came to came to become a problem for Ghanaians to solve?

What crime did we commit against these people(NPP)? where did we go wrong? I weep when I sit to read these documents. What Ghana is going through is a rape of our public purse.

Sammy Gyamfi’s revelation is a reiteration of NDC’s Ato Forson’s claims about a year ago.

It will be recalled that in 2023, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during a press conference on August 9, 2023 announced government’s intention to introduce a new tax in addition to it’s about fifty since his assuming office in 2017.

Colleagues, ladies and gentlemen of the media, fellow countrymen and women let me assure you that very soon Ghanaians would be made to pay for Bank of Ghana recapitalisation levy.

A tax to recapitalise the central bank of Ghana. So as we speak the Central Bank has collapsed.

Euro 2024: Lehmann labels Spain as a “team of kids’

Former Germany goalkeeper and current German television pundit, Jens Lehmann, has expressed confidence in the Euro 2024 hosts’ chances against Spain in their upcoming quarterfinal clash on Friday.

His remarks, noting Spain’s perceived inexperience, have stirred controversy in the Spanish media.

The highly anticipated match between Spain and Germany in Stuttgart is being portrayed as a clash between the tournament’s top two teams thus far.

Reflecting on his extensive experience, Lehmann, who played 61 times for Germany and was part of their Euro 2008 final loss to Spain, pointed out what he sees as vulnerabilities in the Spanish team.

“We’ve seen the good results [Spain] have had, without doubt, in the group phase,” he told Welt TV. “In terms of technique, they might be better than us. But they’re small in terms of height, and they’re inexperienced.

“They’re a team of kids. They have very young players. They don’t have much international experience.”

Those comments have not gone down well in Spain. Wednesday’s frontpage of country’s biggest sports newspaper, Marca, read: “Lehmann, the historic German goalkeeper, is another one who doesn’t take us seriously.”

Spain emerged as the only team to achieve a perfect record in the group stage, winning all three matches against Croatia, Italy, and Albania in Group B without conceding a single goal.

Lamine Yamal, a 16-year-old standout from Barcelona, has impressed in their attacking lineup, alongside 21-year-old Nico Williams from Athletic Club.

Meanwhile, tournament hosts Germany topped Group A, beginning with a commanding 5-1 victory over Scotland, followed by a 2-0 win against Hungary, and concluding with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland.

“It’s another opinion, it’s respectable, but we don’t share it,” Spain forward Mikel Oyarzabal said on Tuesday, when asked about Lehmann’s comments. “We know we’re a group that makes a great team. People will have their reasons for saying what they think, but it doesn’t affect us.”

UEFA launches inquiry into Turkey’s Demiral for his Euro 2024 celebration

UEFA has initiated an investigation into Turkey defender Merih Demiral’s actions following allegations of inappropriate behavior during his celebration after scoring a goal at Euro 2024.

Demiral scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Austria on Tuesday, securing a spot in the quarterfinals.

Following his second goal, Demiral appeared to make a hand gesture associated with the Turkish ultra-nationalist organization Ulku Ocaklari, also known as the Gray Wolves.

UEFA confirmed on Wednesday that it had appointed an inspector to look into the matter, without specifying a timeline for the investigation.

Turkey’s next match is against the Netherlands in Berlin on Saturday.

Demiral had previously been among 16 Turkish players cautioned in 2019 for making military-style salutes during games, coinciding with a Turkish military operation in Syria.

The Gray Wolves group is banned in France, and Austria prohibits the Gray Wolf salute, widely recognized among Turkish nationalists.

  • Everton ink five-year deal with Senegal’s Ndiaye

Everton ink five-year deal with Senegal’s Ndiaye

Everton have secured Senegal forward Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille on a five-year deal.

The Toffees paid an undisclosed fee for the 24-year-old, who transferred to Marseille from Sheffield United last summer.

Ndiaye netted four goals in 46 appearances last season, contributing to the French club’s run to the Europa League semi-finals.

“He is still young but has experience at European and international level and we feel he will be a really positive addition to our squad,” said Everton manager Sean Dyche.

Sheffield United “reluctantly accepted” a reported £20 million offer for Ndiaye, following his impressive performance of 14 goals and 11 assists that helped secure their promotion from the Championship in the 2022-23 season.

The Blades had signed Ndiaye from non-league side Boreham Wood in 2019.

The France-born forward, who spent time in the Marseille academy, later moved to Senegal, his father’s homeland.

Ndiaye becomes Everton’s third summer signing, joining after winger Jack Harrison, who returned on a season-long loan from Leeds, and central midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, who made a permanent move from Aston Villa.

“The main reasons I wanted to join were how big the club is, its history and the part I can play in helping the team in the forward direction it is going in,” said Ndiaye, who has made 20 international appearances.

“I’m so excited. I’ll be very proud to be part of the last season to play at Goodison Park, too.”

Everton’s director of football Kevin Thelwell said: “Iliman is a player we have admired for a long time and we are delighted to bring a much sought-after player of his quality to Everton.

“We think he will excite Evertonians and give our attack a different dimension.”

“Without a doubt it’s the last Euro for me” – Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed that the European Championship in Germany will be “without a doubt” the last of his impressive career.

The 2024 Euros mark Ronaldo’s record-breaking sixth appearance in a European Championships.

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the European Championship in Germany will “without a doubt” be the final tournament of his illustrious career.

The 2024 Euros will be Ronaldo’s record-setting sixth appearance in the European Championships.

The following tournament, hosted by the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, will take place in four years when Ronaldo will be 43 years old.

The next tournament will be hosted by the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland in four years, when Ronaldo will be 43.

“Without a doubt it’s the last Euro [for me], of course it is,” Ronaldo told Portugal TV’s RTP.

“But I’m not emotional about that. I’m moved by everything that football entails, by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm I see in the fans, having my family here, people’s passion… it’s not about leaving the world of football. What else is there for me to do or win?”

Ronaldo, who made his debut with Portugal in 2003 and won the tournament 2016, is the men’s all-time leading scorer with 130 goals.

“The most important thing about the journey I’ve been on is the enthusiasm I still have for being here,” he said.

“It’s 20 years representing and playing with the national team, bringing joy to people, to the family, my children, that is what motivates me most.”

Ronaldo’s mental fortitude was tested on Monday when Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved his penalty shot in the 114th minute.

Portugal ultimately triumphed in the round-of-16 match, defeating Slovenia in a penalty shootout where Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved all three of Slovenia’s attempts.

The Al Nassr superstar was overcome with emotion as the game went to a penalty shootout and had to be consoled by his teammates.

“It’s football; those who fail are those who try, too,” Ronaldo said. “I will always do my best for this shirt, whether I fail or not.

“As you saw, I missed the penalty but I wanted to be the first to score [on the penalty shootout] because you have to take responsibility when the team has to.

You can’t be afraid, I’ve never been afraid to face things head on, sometimes I get it right, sometimes I don’t, but giving up is something you’ll never hear from my name.”

Ronaldo, who is the record goal scorer in the history of the competition with 14 goals, has yet to find the back of the net in Germany.

“Obviously it’s frustrating when we can’t score, but it’s football,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said.

“In the end, the result was positive was the most important thing.

“I lose twice this year on penalties [to Al Ain in a penalty shootout in the Asian Champions League quarterfinals and to Al Hilal in the King Cup of Champions final], and now I won.

“I think football sometimes has to be fair, and it was fair because I think Portugal deserved to win.”

Portugal will now face France in the quarterfinals on Friday.

“We will now have a difficult game against France, who are the favourites to win the competition along with Germany and Spain,” Ronaldo said.

“But we are going to war — this is football. The team is doing well, this [win against Slovenia] was a boost of energy that the team had, and we will fight until the end.

Baffour Gyan’s advice to Kudus concerning Saudi links

Retired Ghanaian footballer Baffour Gyan has suggested that Mohammed Kudus seek advice from his inner circle concerning the reported lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.

In an interview with the media , Baffour Gyan encouraged the West Ham star to discuss the offer with his family before making a decision.

Gyan emphasized that although Kudus is a widely celebrated football star in Ghana, his choices significantly impact his family, making it essential for him to include them in such important decisions.

“He is a Ghanaian, and we all love him, but there are some decisions that you take with your family, and this is one of them. It’s a decision he has to make with his family,” he said.

Baffour Gyan revealed that he was instrumental in persuading his brother, Asamoah Gyan, to accept an offer from the Chinese club Shanghai SPG.

After a successful spell in the UAE, Asamoah Gyan signed a two-year contract in 2015, earning £225,000 per week.

Baffour Gyan acknowledged being one of the people who urged Gyan to accept the deal, stating on Wontumi FM, “I was part of those who pushed him to China.”

Asamoah Gyan admitted it was a difficult move but, after consulting with his family, was convinced it was the right step.

“It was a difficult decision for me, but I spoke to everyone around me, and we decided it was the best move for me. Luckily, it turned out well for me, and we have managed to establish companies that are employing Ghanaians,” he said.

According to ESPN, Al-Ittihad is interested in signing the Ghanaian player for $150 million.

The Saudi Pro League team is also offering a weekly salary of $300,000. Additional benefits for the 23-year-old include business class travel for his family, free accommodation, and cars.

Son of Ghana’s late former president John Evans Atta Mills, Kofi Sam Atta Mills, recently took part in an NDC health walk in the Northern Region.

Leading alongside Sharaf Dramani Mahama, son of former president John Dramani Mahama, they joined hundreds of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in Tamale over the weekend.

The walk aimed to mobilize youth support and increase voter turnout for the NDC in the upcoming 2024 general elections, seen as crucial for the party’s mission to change Ghana’s leadership from the ruling NPP.

Kofi Atta Mills’ involvement reflects his commitment to rallying Ghana’s youth and supporting John Dramani Mahama’s bid to “reset the country on a better path.”

Other prominent attendees at the event included former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrissu, along with MPs Alhassan Suhiyini representing Tamale North, Murtala Mohammed from Tamale Central, and several other influential NDC leaders from the Northern Region.

Speaking at the health walk, Henry Osei Akoto stated that “there is no difference between President Akufo-Addo and the oppressors Dr. Kwame Nkrumah fought in Ghana in the 1950s prior to and after securing Ghana’s independence through to 1960s.”

He added that the NDC winning the December 7, 2024, presidential election will be the second Independence Day for Ghana.

Western Region fishermen ‘cry’ over insufficient govt support during closed season

Fishermen in the Western Region have expressed frustration over inadequate support and a shortage of premix fuel ahead of the 2024 closed fishing season.

The announcement of the season by Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hawa Koomson, on July 1, 2024, in Dixcove, has triggered concerns among the fishing community.

According to the fishermen, the government’s provision of a bag of rice is insufficient to meet their needs during this period.

They are calling on the government to offer additional financial assistance to alleviate the hardships they will face during the ban.

“The one bag of rice they are bringing would not be enough for a family of four or more without money.

How are we going to cope with this?

So, the government should rather put in place proper financial support for each fisherman because the fishing industry is the major source of livelihood in their Ahanta Area,” one of them said on behalf of the rest.

Meanwhile, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hawa Koomson, has given a stern warning to fishermen as the closed fishing season begins.

This period is vital for allowing fish stocks to replenish and sustain the country’s marine resources.

At an event in Dixcove, Western Region, on July 1, Koomson emphasised the imposition of severe penalties for those who violate fishing regulations.

“It has come to my notice that some fisherfolks are planning to land their fish at the Togo border during the closed season.

Therefore, kindly be warned that they will be apprehended and charged if they go ahead with their intention.

Furthermore, there shall be no use of monofilament nets and any unauthorised fishing gear after the opening of the season,” she stated.

  • 2024 polls: ACDT warns of potential cyberattack threat

2024 polls: ACDT warns of potential cyberattack threat

Africa Centre for Digital Transformation (ACDT) has issued a warning about potential cyber threats to Ghana’s upcoming December 7 elections, urging stakeholders to take immediate steps to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

In a press release, the ACDT highlighted the increasing risk of cyber-attacks in Ghana, especially as digital systems play a crucial role in various aspects of Ghanaian society, including elections.

ACDT urged the government to develop and regularly update incident response plans to swiftly address and mitigate any cyber incidents that may arise.

Executive Director Kwesi Atuahene emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity in ensuring a secure, transparent, and credible electoral process in Ghana.

“As we approach the 2024 elections, we must be prepared to counter cyber threats and protect the integrity of our electoral systems,” Mr. Atuahene said.

Emphasizing the national significance of addressing these threats, the organization stressed the importance of securing the electoral process.

The ACDT’s concerns are underscored by previous cyber incidents during elections in West Africa.

In Nigeria’s 2015 and 2019 elections, cyber-attacks targeted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), attempting to breach databases and spread misinformation.

Despite some compromises, INEC maintained that these incidents did not affect the overall election outcomes.

Similarly, in Sierra Leone’s 2018 elections, cyber-attacks on the National Electoral Commission (NEC) aimed to disrupt voting processes and manipulate public opinion, prompting enhanced cybersecurity measures by the government to safeguard the electoral process.

Referencing Ghana’s own electoral experiences, the ACDT noted incidents such as the 2016 cyber-attack on the Electoral Commission’s website, causing temporary disruptions.

The ACDT is committed to supporting the Ghanaian government, the Electoral Commission, and all stakeholders in this effort, urging them to prioritize cybersecurity and work collaboratively to protect Ghana’s democracy from cyber threats.

Hearts’ Aboubakar Ouattara labels Kotoko mass dismissal as waste of money

Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara has emphasized that he views it as inefficient and costly to terminate players’ contracts and recruit replacements.

In contrast to rivals Asante Kotoko, who released 21 players after the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, Ouattara stated that Hearts of Oak will not follow suit.

Despite their lower league standings compared to Asante Kotoko, the coach believes it wouldn’t be wise to let go of players who underperformed in the previous season.

In an interview with SportsObama TV, the coach said, “We are friends, and their sacking of players is not my problem. We are Hearts of Oak; I have my agenda and my policies.”

“Who is losing? You are sacking 100 and bringing in 200; what are the results?” he asked.

“When I look at the results, we are struggling, and every time we are doing the same thing. Why haven’t we changed? If you are building a house and you demolish it and start all over again, aren’t you wasting money?” the Ivorian questioned.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak have parted ways with one of their key players, Salifu Ibrahim.

About to 1.8 million peoples have student loan debts of over £50k

A recent report has uncovered data revealing that nearly 1.8 million individuals in the UK now owe at least £50,000 in student loan.

According to figures from the Student Loans Company (SLC), over 61,000 people have debts exceeding £100,000, with an additional 50 individuals each owing over £200,000.

The release of these statistics follows a Freedom of Information (FOI) request seeking information on loan holders with above-average debts eligible to commence repayments.

Previously, the SLC reported that the average debt for borrowers in England starting repayments was just under £45,000, but recent government data shows this has risen to £48,470.

Debt levels can soar for students undertaking multiple or lengthy courses, compounded by accruing interest over time.

In the fiscal year 2023/24, approximately 2.8 million individuals in England made repayments on their student loans, highlighting that while only a small percentage face debts exceeding £100,000, a majority owe more than £50,000.

Earlier this year, the BBC revealed that the highest reported UK student debt stood at over £231,000. Recent updates now indicate that this figure has climbed to £252,000 within a span of three months.

Tom Allingham, from website Save The Student, said such debts were “alarming” but were “in no way indicative of the norm”.

The National Union of Students (NUS) branded it “ridiculous” that none of the main parties are offering “reform” of student finance in the election campaign.

BBC News has compiled a table illustrating the number of student loan holders facing significant debts: more than £50,000, £100,000, and £200,000.

Graduates burdened with substantial debt have also voiced their apprehensions about the existing system.

One such individual is Titi, a senior electrical engineer based in Croydon, who preferred not to disclose his full name. His student debt has escalated to over £128,200, increasing by £788.11 from 6 April to 6 June this year.

Asante Kotoko targets Sudanese striker Karim Abdelrahman

Asante Kotoko is reportedly set to sign 19-year-old Sudanese striker Karim Abdelrahman to enhance their attacking lineup for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

This young talent has been recommended to the Ghanaian club by Kwasi Appiah, the Sudan national team head coach and an Asante Kotoko IMC member, according to Brutal TV GH.

Karim, who started his football career with Al-Merreikh, is the younger brother of Mohammed Karim Abdelrahman, the Sudan national team and Al Hilal striker.

Despite being the younger sibling, Karim is noted for his impressive physique and versatile skills on the pitch.

Sudanese journalist Rahim, in an interview with Brutal TV GH, described Karim as “a very promising talent with a strong build, capable of playing with both feet and scoring with headers.”

After a disappointing season that saw the Porcupine Warriors finish sixth without any trophies, the club is now focused on restructuring the squad for the next campaign.

As part of their rebuilding efforts, Asante Kotoko has already released eighteen players, with plans to loan out some of the remaining players and offer new contracts to others.

Intense turbulence forces plane to divert to Brazil, injuring 30 passengers

An Air Europa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flying from Madrid to Montevideo made an emergency landing in Brazil after encountering severe turbulence, resulting in injuries to approximately 30 passengers.

The incident occurred mid-air, prompting Flight UX045 to divert to Natal Airport in northeastern Brazil en route to its destination in Uruguay, according to the airline’s statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

It added that passengers who suffered injuries were “receiving attention”.

An Air Europa spokesperson reported that the plane, carrying 325 passengers, encountered turbulence over the Atlantic Ocean as it approached the Brazilian coast.

The aircraft landed without incident and was met by a fleet of ambulances.

Airport officials reported that several passengers required medical attention and were transported to the nearest hospital.

According to local medical personnel speaking to Brazilian media, they treated around 30 passengers of various nationalities, with 10 of them needing hospitalization. The injuries sustained included cranial fractures and facial cuts from impacts during turbulence.

This incident occurred shortly after a Singapore Airlines flight experienced severe turbulence over Myanmar, resulting in numerous injuries and the tragic death of a British passenger.

Although severe turbulence remains uncommon, recent research suggests that climate change may be contributing to an increased risk.

  • Biden criticizes court ruling declaring Trump’s immunity as undermining the rule of law

Biden criticizes court ruling declaring Trump’s immunity as undermining the rule of law

President Joe Biden has criticized a recent Supreme Court ruling that granted former President Donald Trump partial immunity from criminal prosecution, calling it a “dangerous precedent.”

Biden argued that the decision undermines the “rule of law” and does a disservice to Americans.

Trump, on the other hand, celebrated the court’s ruling as a significant victory for democracy. The justices determined that while a president is immune for “official acts,” they are not immune for “unofficial acts,” sending the case back to a trial judge.

This ruling is expected to further delay Trump’s criminal case related to allegations of attempting to undermine the 2020 election results, which handed victory to Biden.

The trial judge now needs to identify which actions Trump took in his capacity as president, a process that could span several months. It is unlikely that any trial will commence before the presidential election in November.

In a televised statement late on Monday, President Biden said: “This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America. Each of us is equal before the law. No one, no one is above the law. Not even the president of the United States.

“Today’s [court] decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what a president may do.
“The man who sent that mob to the US Capitol is facing potential criminal conviction for what happened that day.

The American people deserve to have an answer in the courts before the upcoming election.”

Mr Biden was referring to Trump being on trial for his alleged role in stirring up the riot.

“Now, because of today’s [court] decision, that is highly, highly unlikely,” Mr Biden said.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, a trial judge now faces the task of distinguishing between actions taken by Donald Trump in his capacity as president and those undertaken in a private capacity.

This determination process is expected to be lengthy and may delay any potential trial until after the November 5 election. Trump hailed the ruling as a significant victory, describing it as a “big win” on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The Supreme Court’s ruling grants partial immunity to all former presidents from criminal prosecution, specifying that acts performed as part of official presidential duties enjoy total immunity. However, acts considered “unofficial,” conducted in a private capacity, are not covered by this immunity.

The lower court judge tasked with Trump’s case will now need to assess which specific behaviors of the former president are pertinent to the criminal prosecution.

This case involves allegations that Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 election result by pressuring officials at the Department of Justice (DoJ) to initiate investigations into voter fraud, despite lacking substantiated evidence.

The three liberal justices on the Supreme Court strongly dissented from Monday’s decision. Justice Sonia Sotomayor said: “The president is now a king above the law.”
Democratic Congresswomen Judy Chu said the fallout from the court’s decision would be far-reaching.

“If a president says in any official capacity that they want to do something that we would consider to be improper and criminal, he could be immune from the actions that he takes,” she said.

he recent six-three Supreme Court ruling is expected to significantly postpone any potential trial involving Donald Trump until well after the November election, if it proceeds at all.

This ruling also affects other ongoing criminal cases against Trump, including those concerning classified documents found at his Florida residence and allegations in Georgia related to efforts to overturn his narrow election loss in the state.

According to CBS, Trump’s legal team is pursuing efforts to overturn his May conviction in New York, where he faces charges of falsifying business records linked to an alleged encounter with adult-film star Stormy Daniels.

The team has reportedly referenced the Supreme Court’s decision in a letter to the judge handling the case, although the contents of the letter have not been publicly disclosed.

The New York Times initially reported on these developments, noting that Trump currently faces four separate legal challenges.

After a brief pause, De Bruyne replied with a question, “What is the Golden Generation?”

Euro 2024: Bellingham may escape ban for a fine after indecent behaviour towards Slovakia bench

Jude Bellingham is under investigation by UEFA for allegedly “breaching the basic rules of decent conduct” after making a crotch-grabbing gesture towards the Slovakia bench during England’s Euro 2024 round-of-16 victory in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Sunday.

A source revealed that, despite the gesture following his stoppage-time equalizer, a ban from UEFA is unlikely. Instead, Bellingham, 21, could face a fine if found guilty.

Bellingham explained on social media that the gesture was an “inside joke to friends,” but UEFA has tasked its disciplinary body with investigating the incident.

In similar past cases, Cristiano Ronaldo and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone were fined €20,000 for comparable gestures in the 2019 Champions League, but neither received a ban.

England is set to face Switzerland in the quarterfinals in Düsseldorf on Saturday.

In a statement issued on Monday, UEFA said: “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct by the English Football Association player, Jude Bellingham, having allegedly occurred in the scope of this match.

“Information on this matter will be made available in due course.”

UEFA has charged the English FA with supporter-related issues following the Slovakia game.

The investigation focuses on “lack of order or discipline among supporters” and incidents involving the “lighting of fireworks.”

French film directors in custody after accusations of sexual misconduct

French media reports that prominent filmmakers Benoît Jacquot and Jacques Doillon have been placed in police custody for questioning regarding allegations of historical sexual abuse.

Actress Judith Godrèche has accused Benoît Jacquot of raping her during childhood, and Jacques Doillon of sexually assaulting her during the same period.

According to AFP news agency, the two filmmakers arrived at the Regional Directorate of the Judicial Police (DRPJ) in Paris on Monday morning.

Both men have denied the allegations, and their legal representatives have criticized their detention.

Marie Dose, Jacques Doillon’s lawyer, argued that no legal grounds justify his detention for questioning “36 years” after the alleged incident. According to French law, individuals can be held in police custody for up to 48 hours.

Earlier this year, Judith Godrèche, aged 51, filed a complaint against Benoît Jacquot, aged 77, accusing him of raping her in 1986 when she was 14 years old.

She alleged that he exerted an unhealthy “hold” over her during a relationship that extended into the 1990s. Additionally, she accused Jacques Doillon of sexual assault during a film shoot in which she acted.

These accusations prompted a joint investigation in February.

Early in her career, Judith Godrèche gained recognition for her roles in two films directed by Benoît Jacquot: “The Beggars” (1987) and “The Disenchanted” (1990). Jacquot has been active in filmmaking since the mid-1970s, and his drama “Farewell, My Queen” opened the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival.

Ms. Godrèche also starred in Jacques Doillon’s 1989 film “The 15 Year Old Girl,” which competed at the Moscow International Film Festival. Doillon’s recent works include “Rodin” and “You, Me and Us.”

She has since appeared in numerous other films, including “The Overnight,” “The Spanish Apartment,” and “The Man in the Iron Mask.”

I owe part of my emergence as Minority leader to the media – Speaker Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed deep appreciation for Ghana’s media during an event in Kumasi on Sunday, June 29, 2024.

He credited the media for recognizing his leadership potential and portraying him as a trustworthy figure that Ghanaians can depend on.

Bagbin emphasized that since assuming the role of minority leader in 2020, the media has been instrumental in providing him with the necessary support for his success.

“I have reached this far in politics because of my partnership with the media. Whether we describe that relationship in flowery terms or not, it is a truism that I managed to climb this high because I was identified by the media in the early part of my journey in parliament as one of the people who could be relied on, who could be trusted.

“And that is what lifted me when my party lost the elections in 2000 to become the minority leader of parliament. And during that period, the media was solidly behind me.

Some gave very positive accounts of me; others gave very negative accounts of me, and that brought public focus on the character called Bagbin,” he said.

He added, “Definitely, that is what politics is about, how you can combine positivity with negativity to achieve results. It’s part of the diversity of creation.”

The Speaker of Parliament also indicated that the house is committed to the protection and growth of the media in Ghana.

“Parliament is committed to moving with you to make a change in the political culture of our beloved country, Ghana. We cannot succeed as a country without the media.”

  • IMF attributes disbursement of 3rd tranche of bailout to Ghana’s economic progress

IMF attributes disbursement of 3rd tranche of bailout to Ghana’s economic progress

IMF Mission Chief for Ghana, Stephane Roudette, has lauded Ghana’s impressive economic achievements despite global adversities, the chief mentioned in a press conference on July 1, 2024.

He highlighted the country’s substantial progress under the IMF-backed Post-COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG).

“Ghana’s performance under the PC-PEG has been commendable,” Roudette stated. “The country has surpassed expectations with a strong GDP growth of 4.7% in the first quarter of 2024, demonstrating resilience and effective implementation of fiscal policies.”

He mentioned that Ghana has shown strong overall performance under the program, meeting all quantitative performance criteria for the second review and nearly all indicative targets. One exception was noted.

He highlighted significant advancements in crucial structural reforms, such as improving revenue generation and rationalizing non-priority expenditures, which are expected to bolster the economy upon realization.

Last Friday, the IMF approved the release of the third tranche amounting to $360 million, bringing the total IMF disbursements under Ghana’s three-year bailout program to approximately $1.6 billion.

This decision follows Ghana’s successful negotiation with its Official Creditor Committee, a crucial step required to unlock the third tranche.

Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam emphasized the effectiveness of robust measures implemented, attributing them to the recent revitalization of the economy.

“Growth is proving to be more resilient and robust than initially programmed and the economy continues to show strong signs of recovery in Q1 of 2024.

Overall Real GDP growth for Q1 2024 was 4.7%, the highest since Q1 of 2022.

This growth performance is better than the 3.1% growth recorded in the same period in 2023. Industry grew the most at 6.8%, followed by Agriculture at 4.1% and Services at 3.3%. The 2024 Q1 GDP growth rate for industry is the highest since Q4 of 2020,” he said.

Minister Amin Adam also noted the progress in managing inflation and stabilizing the exchange rate. “Headline inflation declined to 23.1% in May 2024 from 25.0% in April 2024, after peaking at 54.1% in December 2022.

The Cedi has also stabilized, with year-to-date depreciation against the US dollar at 18.4%, compared to 22.0% in the same period in 2023.”

The Minister highlighted significant achievements in debt restructuring, noting that Ghana successfully negotiated with the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) to restructure $5.1 billion of its official bilateral loans.

This agreement is expected to provide $2.8 billion in debt service relief from 2023 to 2026.

Furthermore, negotiations with Eurobond holders resulted in restructuring $13.1 billion, leading to the cancellation of $4.7 billion in debt and providing $4.4 billion in debt service relief over the same period.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline and implementing ongoing structural reforms aimed at ensuring sustained economic recovery and growth.

“We are committed to sustaining our macroeconomic policy adjustment and reforms to fully restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability while fostering a sustainable increase in economic growth and poverty reduction,” he concluded.

Barcelona removes farewell post to Félix, Cancelo over intended bid for duo’s stay – Source

Barcelona deleted a farewell statement for João Félix and João Cancelo, as they still hope to re-sign the Portuguese duo, a source has revealed

On Sunday, Barça initially thanked Marcos Alonso, Félix, and Cancelo for their time with the club as their respective deals concluded.

Alonso’s contract has expired, making him a free agent, while Félix and Cancelo’s loans from Atlético Madrid and Manchester City, respectively, ended on June 30.

However, the club later removed Félix and Cancelo’s names from the statement and social media posts.

A source explained that the deletions were because Barça intends to extend their stays, and the original statement suggested their departures were final.

Félix, who netted 10 goals in 44 appearances for Barça last season, returns to Atlético, while Cancelo, with 42 appearances, goes back to Manchester City.

Both players are currently with Portugal at Euro 2024.

Despite this, Barça remains in ongoing discussions with the duo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, while awaiting clarity on the club’s financial situation this summer.
