Ejisu By-election: Political Science lecturer condemns ‘White envelope’ incident

Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has described the ‘white envelope’ incident during the Ejisu elections as regrettable, unsuitable, and ill-timed.

His remarks follow the emergence of a viral video showing MP Prof. Kingsley Nyarko allegedly handing an envelope, suspected to contain cash, to some Electoral Commission (EC) officials at a polling center during the ongoing by-election in Ejisu.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Pulse on April 30, Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that regardless of the MP’s intentions, the timing of the envelope’s exchange was inappropriate and could be construed as an attempt to influence the elections.

“Pulling out a thing of that sort at that moment is totally wrong even if there is no intention of influencing anybody. Because you see, for elections to be free and fair, you should not doubt the process because anything will create doubt, I think my good friend knows better.”

“So he should have acted very well. Even if it was something else. It was not money. It was nothing. You shouldn’t have pulled that thing out there. Anything that will raise an eyebrow will obviously undermine the electoral process,” he said.

Meanwhile, the EC has announced that it is investigating the incident and has withdrawn the two temporary staff members implicated.

The EC has pledged to disclose its findings as it probes the matter.

Despite the concerns raised by the envelope incident, Dr. Asah-Asante praised the peaceful conduct of the Ejisu elections and emphasized that all elections should be conducted in a similar manner.

“I think that the elections have been smooth but this is a very unfortunate incident. This has been a peaceful election so we don’t expect anything to come in to affect the situation,” he said.

Ejisu By-election: Dr. Serebour Quaicoe urges against condemning EC officials until content of ‘bribe’ envelope is verified

The Electoral Commission’s Director of Electoral Services, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, confirms that an investigation has been initiated into the alleged bribery involving two officials during Tuesday’s by-election in Ejisu.

Following a video showing New Patriotic Party Member and Kwadaso MP, Prof. Kingsley Nyarko, handing over a white envelope suspected to contain cash to electoral officials, two electoral body officials have been withdrawn for investigation.

Dr. Quaicoe notes that the outcome of the investigation will dictate the Electoral Commission’s subsequent actions.

In an interview with JoyNews’ Ohemeng Tawiah after the withdrawal of the two temporary officers from the Ejisu Constituency by-election, he states that the contents of the envelope given to the officials are yet to be determined.

“For now, we shouldn’t crucify them till we do the investigation and get to the root of it because clearly if you watched (the video), the parcel was being given to them and the people were not ready to take it.”

“So it was dropped on the table but when it was dropped, who took it? We don’t know”, he added.

The Electoral Commission affirmed its commitment to upholding its fundamental principles of integrity, truth, and transparency, leading to the decision to withdraw them.

“The Electoral Commission has taken immediate steps and has withdrawn the two (2) temporary staff while investigations take place.

“The commission upholds the principles and values of integrity, truth and transparency. These values are reinforced during the training of all temporary staff.

“Smart move!” – Anyidoho applauds Bawumia for campaigning without announcing his running mate

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress NDC, Samuel Koku Anyidoho is suggesting that Dr. Bawumia’s decision to begin his campaign for the Flagbearer position before naming his running mate is a politically strategic move.

Mr Anyidoho believes that by establishing his presence first, Bawumia ensures that whoever becomes his running mate will always be considered the second-in-command without any aspirations for the top position.

Essentially, Anyidoho sees this as a way for Bawumia to maintain control and avoid any potential challenges from his running mate.

In an X post he wrote, “From a politically strategic perspective, it makes lots of sense for Dr. Bawumia to kick-start his campaign as Flagbearer & establish his presence before naming his running mate so that, ad infinitum, the running mate shall always be Number 2 with no “funny ideas”. Smart move.”

Prepare for jail next year because we are going to prosecute corrupt NPP appointees – Malik tells Charles Bissue

Deputy National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has issued a warning that if the NDC assumes power in the future, Charles Bissue and other NPP appointees accused of corruption will face legal repercussions.

Malik’s statement follows recent remarks from the NPP suggesting that the current government will not relinquish power easily.

However, according to the Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, it is evident that the NPP is fearful of being exposed. Furthermore, he asserts that not only will they be exposed, but John Mahama (when he becomes president) will also ensure that they face consequences for their actions.

“I am sayin that President Mahama has said that, next year by this time, Many corrupt appointees will be standing trial, President Mahama has repeatedly said, that the president’s corrupt appointees who engaged in corruption….and I know that next year by this time,. Even Mr Charles Bissue himself will be standing investigation. Because I mean he is the first gentleman to count corrupt money on camera. And all these people will be prosecuted. So if because of the prosecution of such people you stand on the podium and say “we will never hand over power”, then prepare for jail next year,” He told Roland Walker on TV3’s morning show program.

NPA pledges to alleviate financial pressures on LPG traders amidst challenges

In response to growing concerns voiced by the LPG Marketers Association, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has assured steadfast support to ease operational costs for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) traders.

The contentious issue under discussion pertains to the proposed imposition of an $80 per metric ton (MT) levy on suppliers’ premiums, aimed at enhancing investments in bottling plants and cylinder margins.

Abass Ibrahim Tasunti, Head of Economic Regulation at the NPA, reaffirmed the authority’s proactive stance in tackling industry challenges to ensure sustained viability.

Mr. Tasunti delineated the NPA’s comprehensive strategy, which incorporates regulatory directives and innovative measures to alleviate the financial burden on stakeholders.

“While taxes are indispensable for government revenue, we recognize the imperative of striking a delicate balance. In light of this, we have advocated for a reevaluation of the tax burden on LPG,” stated Mr. Tasunti.

He expanded on collaborative efforts between the NPA and bulk distribution companies (BDCs) to streamline importation processes and lower related expenses.

“Our dialogue with BDCs has paved the way for exploring alternative procurement avenues. Through consolidating quantities and conducting transparent competitive tenders, we have successfully negotiated premiums, significantly trimming costs. The introduction of the $80 per metric ton levy complements this endeavor, fostering a more sustainable pricing framework,” Mr. Tasunti explained.

The NPA’s proactive interventions have yielded tangible outcomes, as evidenced by a remarkable reduction in premiums from $100 to $30 per metric ton.

Mr. Tasunti underscored the positive ripple effect of this initiative on the overall LPG importation cost structure, highlighting its pivotal role in adapting to pricing fluctuations.

The Ghana you want is not what we want – Koku Anyidoho tells Mahama

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Koku Anyidoho has downplayed John Mahama’s vision for “A Better Ghana.”

Anyidoho contends that late President Atta Mills was the only leader genuinely committed to advancing a Ghana that benefits all citizens.

He suggests that Mahama’s version of “A Better Ghana” prioritizes the interests of his inner circle over the welfare of every Ghanaian.

Thus, he concludes that what Ghanaians want for ‘A better Ghana” is not the same as what Mahama is gearing up for.

“Which Ghana do we want apart from, “A Better Ghana”? Prez Mills started giving us the Ghana we All (not a few greedy bastards) want, & when you “conspired with nature” for him to “give way”, u ate all the meat & fed us bones. Obviously, the Ghana you want is not what we want,” he posted on X.

ORC increases GHS650 penalty for defaulting companies to GHS1,000 effective May 1, 2024

Effective May 1, 2024, the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has announced an increase in penalties for companies in default.

The penalty fee has been raised from GH¢650 to GH¢1,000, aimed at discouraging non-filing or late filing of annual returns.

This directive applies to both private and public companies limited by shares, as well as private and public companies limited by guarantee, including schools, churches, associations, NGOs, CSOs, foundations, etc.

“In accordance with Section 126 of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), which mandates that every company file their Annual Returns at least once a year or within thirteen (13) months after incorporation,” a statement from the ORC read.

The Office emphasizes the mandatory requirement for every incorporated company in Ghana to submit an annual return, regardless of its operational status.

According to section 126(1) of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), the annual return must be certified by a director and secretary of the company and submitted to the Office of the Registrar of Companies, along with the audited financial statements for the year.

“Consequently, effective from May 1, 2024, the ORC will impose an updated penalty of GH¢1,000.00, up from GH¢650.00, on companies in default for each month the default persists, in line with section 126(7),” the ORC declares.

“Should a company fail to comply with this section, the company and every officer of the company in default will be liable to pay the Registrar an administrative penalty of twenty-five (25) penalty units (approximately GH¢300.00) for each day the default continues,” it added.

Nonetheless, the ORC clarifies that the hike in penalty fees is not intended to impose financial strain on companies. Instead, it aims to discourage persistent non-compliance with the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992).

“Companies with a financial year running from January 1 to December 31 are required to file their Annual Returns in the first quarter of the subsequent year,” it stated.

“Additionally, companies with a financial year beginning on September 1 and ending on August 31 must file their Annual Returns in the last quarter of the preceding year. Annual returns may also be filed for a period determined by the directors of the company,” the Office concludes.

Young Ghanaian man Seidu Rafiwu, vying for the Guinness World Records title for the longest individual walk, successfully finished his journey at Independence Square in Accra today.

Rafiwu commenced his trek on Saturday, April 27, and completed the 383 km journey in 96 hours from Techiman to Accra.

He concluded his record attempt earlier today at Independence Square in Osu, Accra.

Reports of Rafiwu being rushed to the hospital due to exhaustion almost marred his Guinness World Record attempt on Saturday, adding controversy to his endeavor.

However, he later dispelled the rumors, clarifying that the viral video showing him receiving treatment in the ambulance was actually part of his scheduled recovery session supervised by his medical team.

America’s Jesse Casteneda set the current walking marathon record in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, in September 1976, covering a distance of 228.930 kilometers.

Ghanaians are hopeful that Seidu Rafiwu’s endeavor will achieve similar success.

3 lives lost in new Koforidua highway Collision

A collision in New Koforidua off the Ejisu-Konongo Highway in the Ashanti Region on Monday (29 April) claimed the lives of at least three individuals tragically.

The incident involved a Nissan Pick-Up with registration number GN 1645-21 and a Mitsubishi Fuso Truck registered as GT 8794-W.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which promptly responded to the scene, reported that the collision caused severe damage to the Nissan Pick-Up and partial damage to the front of the Mitsubishi Fuso Truck.

The GNFS reported that the road crash, reported to the Konongo Fire Station at 16:30 hours, resulted in one injury and claimed the lives of three individuals.

Among the deceased were Michael Obeng, a Ghanaian, and two suspected Indian nationals.

The bodies were conveyed to the Stewards Morgue for preservation and subsequent investigation.

Kenya Airways halts flights to DR Congo due to detained crew

Kenya Airways, Kenya’s national carrier, has halted its flights to Kinshasa due to the ongoing detention of its crew by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)’s military concerning a contentious shipment of banknotes.

The airline announced the suspension on Monday, indicating that it will be effective from Tuesday.

Kenya Airways cited challenges in overseeing and supporting its operations in Kinshasa as reasons for the decision.

“Due to the continued detention of KQ employees by the Military Intelligence Unit in Kinshasa, Kenya Airways is unable to support our flights without personnel effectively. As a result, we reached a difficult decision to suspend flights to Kinshasa effective April 30, 2024, until we can effectively support these flights,” said the carrier’s managing director, Allan Kilavuka, in the notice.

“The continued detention of our employees has made it difficult for us to supervise our operations in Kinshasa, which include customer service, ground handling, cargo activities, and generally ensuring safe, secure, and efficient operations.”

The decision made by KQ is expected to provide opportunities for other airlines operating the Nairobi-Kinshasa route, such as Ethiopian Airlines, Precision Air, ASKY Airlines, and South African Airways.

Last week, Mr. Kilavuka disclosed that two employees of the airline were arrested and detained on April 19, 2024, due to alleged missing customs documentation related to valuable cargo intended for shipment on a KQ flight on April 12, 2024. However, the said cargo was not uplifted or accepted by Kenya Airways due to incomplete documentation.

Mr. Kilavuka mentioned that military personnel in Kinshasa took the two employees to the military section of the air wing to provide statements but they were held without communication until April 23 when embassy officials and a KQ team were granted access to them.

Although DRC authorities have yet to comment on the situation, sources reported to The EastAfrican newspaper that the issue revolves around the transportation of $8 million that was seized before being loaded onto the KQ plane.

  • Ghana will own 100 per cent of its mineral resources when I become president – Bawumia

Ghana will own 100 per cent of its mineral resources when I become president – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, has pledged to ensure that Ghanaians gain complete ownership of 100 percent of the nation’s mineral resources if he wins the presidency.

He stressed that his administration would prioritize substantial shifts in how the country manages and controls its natural riches, implementing policy frameworks aimed at empowering Ghanaians to fully exploit the benefits of the nation’s mineral wealth.

Dr. Bawumia made this assurance during a breakfast gathering with religious leaders in the Eastern Region on Monday, as part of his extensive campaign tour across the nation.

“I am going to refocus our paradigm for natural resource management. For the most part, Ghana has not maximised the benefits of our natural resources,” he said.

“Since the days of the Portuguese in the 15th century, gold has always been taken out of Ghana. We haven’t benefitted much from our natural resources; I am going to change that paradigm. I am going to bring a bigger focus on ownership of our natural resources.”

“It is as if right now we don’t own our natural resources. I believe that if we do the exploration; and we are going to empower our universities and the Geological Service Department to do the exploration, once we explore that we have seven gold belts that we haven’t yet discovered,” he stated.

After thorough exploration confirming the presence of gold, Dr. Bawumia assured that under the new policy, Ghanaians will have full ownership of these resources, standing at one hundred percent.

Dr. Bawumia’s nationwide campaign will cover all 275 constituencies across the 16 regions until the first week of June.

“Bold Solutions for Our Future,” is the theme for his campaign, focusing on three key pillars: The battle of Ideas and Character, The Battle of Records and The battle of effective campaign.

The NPP Flagbearer and his campaign team will prioritize an issue-based approach, presenting practical and customized solutions to address the pressing concerns of the Ghanaian populace.

Their outreach will encompass a diverse array of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, clergy members, youth organizations, traders, drivers, farmers, and students. Additionally, they will engage with businesses, associations, and the media to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Market centers and other public venues will serve as platforms for Dr. Bawumia to directly hear the voices of traders and consumers, while townhall meetings and ongoing stakeholder engagements will facilitate dialogue with Ghanaians nationwide.

Since being elected as the NPP Flagbearer on November 4, 2023, for the December 7 elections, Dr. Bawumia has been extensively involved in consultations and interactions with various groups across the country, demonstrating a commitment to understanding and addressing their needs.

Embrace businesses in agriculture, its still attractive – Ghanaian youth urged

An expert in agribusiness, Abraham Dwuma Odoom, is urging Ghanaian youth to prioritize agriculture and recognize it as a lucrative entrepreneurial opportunity capable of transforming their lives.

Addressing attendees at the 2024 Youth in Agribusiness Festival in Kumasi, Mr. Odoom emphasized the importance of seizing agricultural initiatives and economic opportunities created by both the government and private firms.

He highlighted that these initiatives often provide essential resources for farming, such as land, water access, modern equipment, and planting materials, which are typically barriers for youth entering the sector.

By leveraging existing resources and policy initiatives, interested individuals can access the necessary support to launch successful agricultural ventures without starting from scratch.

The two-day programme, which was held under the theme “Agribusiness Modernisation: Tool for Sustainable Youth Employment in Ghana,” was organised by the John A. Kufuor Foundation.

Mr. Odoom emphasized that if a significant portion of Ghanaians ventured into modern agriculture, it would lead to a more stable economy and lessen the country’s dependence on imported goods.

He also used the platform to advocate for consensus on the prudent use of pesticides in Ghanaian farms, cautioning against excessive usage due to its detrimental effects on health. He stressed the need for deliberate efforts to regulate pesticide usage.

Expressing concern, Mr. Kwasi Nyamekye, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), highlighted the growing preference for foreign products among Ghanaians. He cited the poultry industry as an example, noting that although it provides significant employment opportunities, locals tend to favor imported poultry products, often citing cost as a deterrent.

Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, Chief Executive Officer of the John A. Kufuor Foundation, outlined the program’s objective of creating platforms for Ghanaian youth to capitalize on the abundant opportunities in the agricultural sector. He emphasized the urgent need for young people to take up roles in agriculture as the elderly, who have traditionally dominated the sector, retire.

Prof. Agyeman-Duah stressed the importance of embracing modern farming technologies to tackle unemployment and drive Ghana’s socio-economic development.

Fuel shortage in Nigeria halts business operations in Nigeria

Last week’s fuel shortages in parts of Nigeria have intensified, causing disruptions to businesses, particularly in the commercial hub of Lagos.

According to reports from privately-owned broadcaster Channels Television, public transport services were suspended on Monday, leaving commuters stranded. Those fortunate enough to secure transportation had to contend with inflated fares.

Local media accounts depict motorists enduring lengthy queues at the few operational petrol stations. Many stations have shuttered due to supply shortages from the formerly state-owned oil company, leading to a surge in black market sales at exorbitant prices, sometimes triple the normal rate.

Last Thursday, Abuja, as well as neighbouring Nasarawa and Niger states, witnessed the resurgence of long queues at petrol stations.

Despite assurances from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) that petrol prices would remain stable and supplies were sufficient, panic buying persisted. The NNPC attributed the limited availability of petrol to logistical challenges, which it claims to have addressed.

Contrary to rumors, an NNPC spokesperson, as reported by privately-owned newspaper The Punch, denied allegations of fuel rationing and favoritism towards supplying Abuja.

Nigeria, despite its status as one of Africa’s largest economies and oil producers, frequently grapples with oil scarcity issues.

  • SSNIT provides clarification on government’s pension contributions

SSNIT provides clarification on government’s pension contributions

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has confirmed that the government has fulfilled its obligations regarding pension contributions for public sector employees.

Additionally, efforts are being made to address outstanding legacy debt.

This affirmation addresses worries raised by an International Labour Organization (ILO) actuarial review, which warned that without reforms to strengthen funding levels, SSNIT’s reserves could be exhausted by 2036.

During a press briefing, Joseph Poku, SSNIT’s Chief Actuary, shed light on the pension fund’s financial status and ongoing discussions with the government regarding legacy liabilities.

“With these legacy debts, before you can come to a final figure, there has to be an agreement. There has to be some kind of discussion with the state, with the government, and then we arrive at that target,” Mr. Poku stated.

He explained the complexities involved. “Even when it comes to the computation of debts, we have a way; we know based on the law, we need to sit with them as we are doing and then they’ll go through everything before we can arrive at a definite figure. I can’t give you a definite figure right now.”

The Chief Actuary clarified that outstanding debt comprises principal amounts as well as accrued interest and penalties. “The debt has a principle component and then the penalty. So we need to agree on all that before we can come out with the total debt that the government owes.”

On the urgency of increasing SSNIT’s contribution rate from the current 11 percent to the recommended 22 percent level, Mr. Poku stressed the need for extensive consultations with stakeholders. “We haven’t indicated a rate that we need to push. We need to engage employers. We need to engage workers. The labour unions are key…on coming out with a specific rate,” he said.

“We, actuaries, will give proposals – 10, 12, 15, 16 percent – whatever. But what I can tell you is the report says our contribution rate that will make the scheme more sustainable is 22 percent,” he said, acknowledging SSNIT is presently “doing half of what we are supposed to based on the actuary report.”

“We should rather be talking about that more and sensitising stakeholders so when we come to them and suggest any figure, they’ll know where we are coming from,” Mr. Poku advocated.

Addressing questions on reserve levels, the actuarial chief said providing a definitive lump sum is impractical given outstanding debts owed. “You cannot say our reserves are 13 billion or 20 billion because it’s a difficult figure to pinpoint. We have debt people owe that factors into the calculation once reconciled,” he added.

However, the Chief Actuary affirmed SSNIT’s active involvement in the ILO’s actuarial process. “SSNIT is conversant with every result in their report. We work with them, provide data and assumptions – everything was discussed before the final report.”

Responding to a query on how long benefits could be paid solely from reserves if no new funds came in, Mr. Poku explained SSNIT’s annual reserve-to-expenditure analysis underpinning such projections. “Given expenditures versus calculated reserves, it can take three years, four years, five years without contributions. The latest for 2022 will be 2.4 years – if you collect no contributions or returns, based on expenditures your reserve will last around three years.”

Crucially, Mr. Poku confirmed ongoing high-level negotiations between SSNIT and financial authorities regarding the unsettled pension debt amounts. “There’s an ongoing discussion on that. Fortunately, we’ve established at year-end, twice yearly, we sit with them and agree on the debt position. We’ve accepted and are negotiating how to pay once reconciled. “It’s not like we started and will end next month…We periodically reconcile debts, then try to make payment arrangements,” he added.

He concluded that SSNIT is currently working on a funding policy“with the ILO’s technical support to formalise long-term objectives, understand financing options, ensure sufficient assets and enhance transparency”.

Bawumia vows to give incentives to Churches and mosques when he becomes president

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to prioritize faith-based organizations if victorious in the 2024 general elections.

He underscored the substantial contributions of churches and Islamic groups in constructing schools and hospitals for the nation.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that these organizations have surpassed many external development partners in their impact on Ghana and should be regarded as development partners.

“That golden age means we are going to give incentives to the faith based organizations to help government. There are lot of incentives we give to our external development partners. They bring in things duty free and so on but they don’t do as much for us as the faith based organizations. I am going to give a lot of incentives to the faith based organizations to help government”.

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during a breakfast gathering with clergy members and Imams in the Eastern Region, commencing his nationwide campaign tour from Akropong.

He highlighted that external development partners receive several incentives, including duty-free imports, yet their contributions are not as significant as those of faith-based organizations.

“I want us (government ) and the faith based organizations to have a very very close relationship. I have said, if you look at the work that the faith based organizations, the churches and so on have done for Ghana, it is more than many of our external development partners will ever do for Ghana. Much much more. The schools they have built, the hospitals they have built but we always don’t treat our faith based organizations as partners in development. I want to bring a whole new chapter in the relationship between our churches, our faith based Islamic organizations and bring a golden age of that relationship between the church and faith based organizations and government”

Dr. Bawumia seeks to foster a “golden age” of collaboration between the government and faith-based organizations by providing them incentives to support governmental initiatives.

‘We will jubilate in Nigeria if we experienced Ghana’s level of dumsor – Nigerian comedian

Renowned Nigerian comedian Parrot Mouth remarked that Ghana’s current power challenges are comparatively milder than those experienced in Nigeria.

He emphasized that Ghanaians should value the periods of electricity they receive before outages, as the situation is considerably worse in Nigeria.

Parrot Mouth highlighted the rarity of stable power lasting even two hours in Nigeria due to the inadequacies of their electricity infrastructure.

He expressed that Nigerians would perceive Ghana’s intermittent power supply, which Ghanaians find frustrating, as a reason for celebration.

“The thing [power outage] that we [Nigerians] will thank God for is what you people [Ghanaians] are angry about. For example, [in Ghana] when the light goes off, some people will get it in the morning while others have it in the evening.

“In Nigeria, if they turn on the light for two hours, we will call them to take it back because the moment it goes off, it can last for 40 years. If we get light for an hour, we thank God. Due to the situation, we contribute money to purchase generators for electricity. I would say Ghana is a lovely country,” said Parrot Mouth on Hitz FM.

Frustration ensued at a total Filling Station in Nigeria as a customer express disbelief over a new policy requiring her to purchase meat pie before buying fuel.

She queried the fuel attendant about the station’s primary function, pondering whether it was a fuel station or a bakery.

The customer captured the moment on video, capturing her displeasure towards the fuel attendant.

“See I no really understand weytin dey happen for this Total Filling Station like this. Because how on earth, I go come, they go tell me say I must buy meat pie before I buy fuel. You must go buy meat pie before you buy fuel. Is this place open for a meatpie or open for a fuel station? Rubbish… This is Total filling station trying (unprintable word) with the masses that we have to buy meatpie before we can buy fuel. What kind of insult, rubbbish. This is total rubbish,” she indicated

Cocoa prices plummet 10% as traders exiting market intensify price fluctuations

Cocoa futures experienced a 10% decline in both New York and London, driven by increased margin calls and uncertainty surrounding a historic market crunch.

Traders withdrew from the market, resulting in significant price fluctuations.

The most-active contract in New York dropped by as much as 10% to $9,510 a ton, marking the largest intraday decrease since 2008 and extending declines from the previous week.

The market entered a correction phase, with futures falling approximately 18% from the record high set on April 19.

This decline coincides with a reduction in the number of outstanding contracts, nearing the lowest level in over a decade based on data compiled by Bloomberg.

Increases in margin requirements for trading and a large reduction in the number of outstanding contracts “opens up more space for trend reversals, with fewer players being able to drive more abrupt movements,” said StoneX analyst Leonardo Rossetti.

Bean supplies could see a slight improvement due to rainfall in West African growing regions, potentially benefiting the upcoming mid-crop harvest. However, this rainfall does not fully address the severe shortage that has led markets into a third consecutive year of deficits. Additionally, the wetter weather contributes to a lack of new bullish events, as money managers persist in reducing their net-long positions.

“The shortage is not over,” said consultant Paulo Torres, a London-based trading and agricultural consultant. “The elephant in the room is the fact that Ivory Coast and Ghana do not have cocoa, so there is no way prices can fall significantly.”

Measures in place by govt to ensure the return of uninterrupted supply – ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reportedly declared that no part of the country experienced load shedding on Sunday, April 29, 2024, signaling a significant improvement in power generation nationwide.

As per information obtained by asaaseradio.com from an internal source at ECG, the 7-week long load shedding program, reminiscent of the dumsor era, is nearing its conclusion.

The source revealed that the absence of load shedding on Sunday indicates an imminent end to the dumsor period, describing it as the best weekend of power supply since the commencement of load shedding.

Additionally, the source affirmed that there are no plans for load shedding in the foreseeable future.

These developments echo the assurances given by Herbert Krapa, Chairman of the Board of ECG, who stated in a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, that the government has implemented effective measures to resolve the current power crisis and ensure uninterrupted power supply for consumers.

“As I said earlier today at Kaleo, at the Commissioning of VRA’s 15MW Solar Plant, the Government has put in place immediate measures to ensure the return of uninterrupted supply of power to consumers. I can, therefore, state that the unfortunate power challenges Ghanaians are facing should be over in the next few days.

“We are fully confident that the measures being put in place should resolve the service interruptions. We empathise with all consumers and apologise unreservedly for the effects of the outages on our daily lives. Please bear with us. We are fixing it and we are nearly there,” Herbert Krapa’s post read

For the past few weeks, power consumers across the country have been dealing with power outages.

In light of these challenges, a portion of the Ghanaian public is asking the Ministry of Energy to publish an official timetable to keep consumers updated on power availability.

  • How Akufo-Addo was hastily whisked away amid tension at Yagbonwura first anniversary celebration

How Akufo-Addo was hastily whisked away amid tension at Yagbonwura first anniversary celebration

The people of Gonjaland have strongly criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo’s behavior during the recent 48th Annual Congress of the Gonjaland Youth Association and the 1st Anniversary of Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I.

In response, they have declared that they will not invite the President to any future events. This decision was reported earlier by InsiderGH.com.

“in an attempt to undermine the authority of the Yagbonwura and the collective pride of the people of the Gonja Kingdom, the Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency, Hon Abu Jinapor, reached out to the Yagbonwura and requested that he stood up and descended from his skins in order to exchange hand shakes with the President. The Yagbonwura didn’t pay heed to this. Then, the NPP regional Chairman, Mr. Kalamonia equally followed up to the King and also placed the same request, which the Yagbonwura played a deaf ear to.”

The incident occurred in Damongo on Saturday, April 27th, 2024, where President Akufo-Addo faced severe criticism for what many perceived as disrespectful behavior towards the King and Overlord of Gonja.

Attendees at the event expressed palpable anger as the President addressed them. Questions arose about whether similar conduct would be accepted if directed at other revered traditional leaders like the Asantehene or Okyehene.

The situation reached a boiling point when President Akufo-Addo, citing time constraints due to his waiting helicopter, insisted on delivering his speech out of turn. His Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon Abu Jinapor, exacerbated tensions by forcefully taking the microphone from the Master of Ceremonies to make the announcement.

The President’s abrupt departure amid rising tensions left a sour impression on those present. Witnesses described a heated atmosphere, with murmurs of discontent drowning out the President’s words.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, despite pressure to leave in protest, chose to stay, demonstrating patience and respect for the event’s protocol.

A delegation of prominent Paramount Chiefs, dispatched by the King and Overlord of Gonja, intervened swiftly to prevent further escalation and convinced Mahama to remain after President Akufo-Addo’s departure.

Critics have criticized President Akufo-Addo for disregarding the established program lineup, which dictated that the King’s speech would precede his own. Many questioned the appropriateness of speaking before the Yagbonwura, who had extended the invitation.

Mahama Haruna, a prominent media personality and recipient of the 2024 NExA Media Personality of the Year award for the five Northern regions of Ghana, expressed outrage at the President’s actions and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

As Gonjaland reflects on this incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting traditional authority and adhering to protocol in Ghana’s diverse cultural landscape.

  • I love my wife, but I cheated on her and now I have HIV – Man cries out for help

I love my wife, but I cheated on her and now I have HIV – Man cries out for help

A married man has expressed deep regret after engaging in infidelity with a national service personnel while his wife was away.

The man shared that he was enticed by the constant care shown by the young lady, ultimately leading to their intimate encounter.

Unfortunately, he not only succumbed to temptation but also contracted the HIV virus as a consequence.

With his wife currently out of the country, he is at a loss on how to disclose the news to her.

Filled with remorse, the married man seeks advice on how to navigate this distressing situation.

Narrating details of the story, The Late Night Chat Show host on Hitz 103.9 FM, Tima Kumkum read this out…

“I have been married for 4 years and my marriage has been an amazing one. We tried to have kids in the first few years but it wasn’t coming. We went through checkups and everything showed we were ok. So we just left our faith in God’s hands and trusted that he would give us in his own time. To our surprise, God bless us just last year November with a bouncy baby boy. My wife’s parent are in the state so she opted to go and give birth there. Due to that she took a long live and travelled around July las year as our baby was due in November. Tima, ever since we married, I haven’t looked at any other woman apart from my wife. I have made a conscious effort to stay faithful to her because my wife is just a good woman. We both work but I have never bought groceries for the house before.”

“She would always buy groceries from the USA and make her mum ship to us as her contribution to our home and even bills Tima, she makes us split 50/50. There is a national service personal at my workplace who will always come to my workplace and ask me if I have eaten. I mean she started showing so much concern just when my wife left the country and I also played along. Tima before I knew it, we were so much into each other and since my wife wasn’t around, I started going out on dates and having date nights with her and one day I went to visit her at her place. Before I could say jack, we had done the thing. Tima I felt so bad. That was around August last year.”

“Now it became as if were now serious but I told her there is no way I could marry her and she said she knows am married but she is in for the fun. So I did succumb and we had sex almost everyday except when she was maturating. Tima I became addicted to her because she could bring the craziness in me. Fast-forward,, just few days ago, I started feeling uneasy, and I saw some unusual rash on my arms so I took it to the hospital and some test was run. Only for the doctor to tell me I am HIV positive. Tima as I am sitting here, the only person I have slept with ever since my wife traveled is this national service lady.”

“Now my wife is returning with our baby next week. How do I break such a news to her. As for the lady I am sure if I lay my eyes on her, I might end up in jail because she has caused me my life. Tima I cannot give this virus to my very good wife. I have regretted every action. I should have just stayed faithful to my wife. I am a church leader and a very respected youth leader. Now how will people see me should the news break. The doctor advised me to inform my wife so she can take precautions.”

“But if I do tell her, I don’t know how she is gonna take it. I love my wife. I don’t wanna loose my marriage. Please what do I do? “

  • CBOD opposes BEST as exclusive buyer for Sentuo Oil

CBOD opposes BEST as exclusive buyer for Sentuo Oil

The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) strongly opposes the government’s suggestion to designate the Bulk Energy Storage and Transportation Company (BEST) as the exclusive off-taker for Sentuo Oil Refinery Limited’s output within the gold for oil programme (G4O).

According to government assertions, this proposal aims to regulate the exchange rate by indirectly channeling Sentuo Oil Refinery’s cedi liquidity through BEST to oversee USD allocations within the G4O programme.

However, industry stakeholders have expressed doubts about this proposal, with CBOD asserting that it contradicts the deregulation policy governing the petroleum downstream sector.

“We object to this proposal and respectfully appeal to the Head of the Economic Management Team (EMT), Vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia, to review this proposal,” a statement issued by CBOD read.

“Providing the needed USD liquidity under the G4O programme can still be achieved without necessarily anchoring the entire output of Sentuo Oil Refinery Limited (SORL) with BEST, formerly known as Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST),” the statement argued.

Additionally, the chamber argues that the government’s strategy may result in market obstacles and shortcomings, potentially impeding the downstream sector’s development in the medium to long run. Moreover, it warns that by excluding Bulk Oil Import, Distribution, and Export Companies (BIDECs), the government could suppress private sector engagement, leading to a monopolized market that is detrimental to consumers.

“The G4O programme has nearly given 50 percent control of the market to BEST whereas Sentuo production accounts for 20 percent of the market needs. Having a single player control such a monumental share of the market will rob the market of the benefits of the efficiency, lower prices and growing local market expertise that the deregulation policy has occasioned,” CBOD stated.

In contrast, CBOD called on the government to create a framework promoting fair market practices, transparency, and inclusive engagement of all stakeholders.

The declaration highlighted the significant role of BIDECs in national progress, such as ensuring energy security during crucial periods and investing in storage infrastructure. It concluded by reiterating the Chamber’s dedication to collaborating with the government to establish a viable G4O framework that encourages innovation, sustainability, and efficiency within the downstream petroleum sector.

Govt allocates $20m for expansion of Kpong Irrigation Scheme

Minister of Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong has announced the approval of $20 million to expand the left bank of the Kpong Irrigation Scheme, a project to be executed by the Food Systems Resilience Programme (FSRP).

This decision follows the government’s prior allocation of $20 million in 2011 under the Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project (GCAP) to initiate the Kpong Irrigation project, benefiting farmers in the Asutuare enclave, including the Golden Exotic Company Limited.

The rehabilitation of the irrigation scheme aims to further enhance the water infrastructure and assist farmers in the enclave in boosting their agricultural yields.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong made this announcement during a speech at a grand durbar commemorating the 20th anniversary of Golden Exotic Company Limited, Ghana’s leading banana exporter, held at Kasunya in Asutuare on Thursday, April 25th.

“The people of this community must know that the government has pumped $20 million into the irrigation scheme around this area and I have also approved another $20 million to expand the left bank of the irrigation scheme in this area which is going to be implemented by the Food Systems Resilience Programme and that will amount to $40 million in this area alone.”

Benedict Rich, the Managing Director of Golden Exotic Company Limited, revealed in an interview with Citi News that the company has utilized drone technology to enhance productivity.

“Drone technology has really advanced in the last few years and we have been trying it and a lot of the work that can be done by hand has now been done by aeroplanes and drones are just a gamechanger and we use them to apply fertilizer and use them to count the bananas and use them to monitor diseases.”

  • Food prices to decrease by 2025 – World Bank report

Food prices to decrease by 2025 – World Bank report

The April 2024 Commodity Outlook Report from the World Bank has recently been published, indicating a significant decline in global food prices for 2024, with an anticipated decrease of 6 percent, followed by an additional 4 percent drop in 2025.

This decline primarily stems from reduced prices for grains, oils, and meals, while other food items are predicted to experience price increases in 2024. However, 2025 is expected to bring widespread decreases in food prices.

The grains price index is projected to decrease by 11 percent in 2024, driven by ample global grain supplies. Specifically, wheat prices are forecasted to fall by 15 percent in 2024 due to increased production, with an additional 2 percent decline in 2025.

These forecasts occur in the context of intense export competition, slightly higher production, offset by somewhat increased consumption, and the lowest end-of-season stocks-to-use ratio in eight years.

Global maize production is expected to reach a record high in the 2023–24 seasons, while global rice production remains steady in 2023-24, resulting in the stock-to-use ratio dropping to its lowest level in three years.

Due to constrained global markets and export restrictions imposed by India, rice prices are anticipated to increase by 8 percent (year-on-year) in 2024.

In Ghana, there is a noticeable reversal in food disinflation as evidenced by the food inflation rate, which surged from 27.0 percent in February to 29.6 percent in March 2024.

This uptick in food inflation coincides with ongoing concerns regarding food insecurity in the sub-Saharan region. With global food prices expected to decrease, it remains uncertain how these changes will affect Ghana’s food market and the overall food security situation in the country.

4 historic landings of large aircraft witnessed in Ghana

In the span of the last seven years, Ghana has witnessed the arrival of a remarkable array of aircraft at both Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and Kumasi International Airport.

The Airbus A380, operated by Emirates, marked a significant milestone in 2018 with its successful landing and departure at Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 3. This event, a one-time service to the new terminal, showcased the airport’s capability to accommodate the world’s largest commercial aircraft.

Piloted by Ghanaian Captain Solomon Quainoo and UAE national First Officer Faisal Alhammadi, this historic A380 landing underscored KIA’s readiness for such prestigious flights.

The recurrence of history transpired on September 29, 2022, as another A380, operated by British Airways, graced KIA’s tarmac, reaffirming Ghana Airports Company Limited’s proficiency in handling some of the globe’s largest passenger planes.

In a more recent development in 2023, US Vice President Kamala Harris embarked on a historic visit to Ghana aboard Air Force 2, the official call sign for any United States Air Force aircraft carrying the Vice President. The grandeur of this jet was on display at KIA for three days during her official visit.

Adding to this aviation saga, the Airbus A320 operated by EgyptAir made its debut at the newly-renovated Kumasi International Airport on April 25, 2024. Transporting the Egyptian football team Zamalek, the A320 landed to play a football match with Ghana’s Dreams FC. Notably, this marked the third successful A320 landing and takeoff at Kumasi International Airport since 2019, as reported by AviationGhana.com.

Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, highlighted during a recent tour of the new Kumasi International Airport that its inauguration is scheduled for May, preceding its full operationalization by June 2024. Expansion plans are underway, including runway extension works to accommodate larger aircraft beyond the A320 and B737, aiming to enhance the airport’s capacity and capabilities.

  • Dumsor collapsing pub and club businesses

Dumsor collapsing pub and club businesses

Intermittent power outages in parts of Accra have resulted in substantial financial setbacks for pubs, clubs, and eateries in the city.

Business owners attribute the inability to refrigerate perishable goods and entertain patrons as the main causes of these losses.

Osu, recognized as Accra’s nightlife hotspot, typically teems with activity after dark, boasting a diverse array of pubs, clubs, and dining establishments.

However, the unpredictable electricity supply has inflicted severe blows on these enterprises. One such venue, Philipos Tilapia Joint, is grappling with significant financial losses due to the recent power interruptions.

Mary Avenue, the chef at Philipos Tilapia Joint, echoes similar concerns in an interview with Citi News. She notes that they’ve had to scale back their fish purchases due to the uncertainty surrounding power availability, adversely impacting their business operations.

Furthermore, the inability to play music and maintain optimal drink temperatures has resulted in customer dissatisfaction and a downturn in business.

“It’s really affecting us because, for some time now, we used to buy our fish in bulk, but because of the light off, we now buy it half because we don’t know what might happen. Secondly, we can’t play music and the drinks become very hot. When the customers come around and you talk to them, they say it’s too hot, meaning the customer has to leave. It makes the work too hard for us, so that’s the challenge we are facing here.”

John Asare, supervisor at Shades Lounge, expressed concern about escalating unemployment rates in the country, fearing exacerbation if power outages persist.

He emphasized that prolonged power disruptions could deter customers, hampering revenue generation for businesses and potentially resulting in layoffs.

“This could lead to unemployment because definitely when we are not getting customers due to the power outage and then the business is not running, we won’t get money to pay our workers so definitely we will only ask them to leave.”

In response to this challenge, pub and eatery proprietors in Accra are advocating for a load-shedding schedule, aiming to gain operational predictability and alleviate the adverse effects of power interruptions.

SSNIT has sufficient funds to pay benefits due members – Management

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has responded recent posts suggesting that it will not be able to pay benefits to members by 2036,

SSNIT’s management highlights a consistent upward trend in contributions, debunking claims of diminishing reserves.

Assuring that they have the capacity to fulfill its members’ benefit obligations with ample funds at its disposal.

This comes in response to assertions from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) suggesting that by 2036, SSNIT might struggle to meet benefit payments due to declining reserves.

In a statement conveyed to the Ghana News Agency, SSNIT management clarified that pension disbursements do not solely rely on reserves, among other pertinent points.

“The SSNIT Scheme presently receives contributions and has enough funds to pay accruing benefits due members. The pension scheme is a partially funded scheme and pension payments are funded from contributions and returns from investments.”

“…There has been steady growth in contributions. This growth is well supported by the current demographics and the dedicated activities of our staff in getting new employers and contributors to join the scheme,” the statement noted.

It added that “investment income has been healthy and would offset any unexpected deficit that may arise…The Trust has never missed any pension payment since 1991, when the pension scheme was introduced.”

“Can you break the 8 with power outages?” – A Plus asks NPP

Entertainment Pundit, Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A Plus, is questioning the ability of the National Patriotic Party (NPP) to break the 8 when the country is currently faced with frequent power outages.

“Can you break the 8 with power outages? Yet they (New Patriotic Party members) get triggered when they are told the truth, is this not stupidity? Why should there be power outages in this country?” he quizzed.

He urged Ghanaians to refrain from passivity when it comes to demanding that the government addresses citizens’ concerns.

Adding that the importance of active engagement, stating that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, with only a few months left in his tenure, appears indifferent to the plight of ordinary citizens.

A Plus criticized Akufo-Addo’s presidency as a deception and expressed frustration over the president’s apparent disregard for pressing issues.

“Nigeria’s case has worsened because of passiveness, we will never be silenced. At this point, everyone should forget about Akufo-Addo, he cares less; the youth, old folks and workers must rise and make demands.

“If you rely on Akufo-Addo, he would disappoint you. He is seeing out his term, he has scammed everyone. He begged for votes, today he says chiefs should stand to greet him.

“He is done, and is now sitting on a high horse without regard for anyone, he is done and has gone tone deaf with few months to the end of his tenure. He doesn’t care whether you sleep in darkness or whatever,” A Plus submitted.

Former ally turned outspoken critic, A Plus, voiced his opinions on the April 27, 2024 episode of the weekly entertainment program, United Showbiz on UTV, hosted by MzGee.

In his online statement, Buchi vehemently criticized the practice of viewing pornographic material, likening it to infidelity and highlighting its detrimental effects on the sanctity of marriage.

His comments have ignited discussions within Christian communities, garnering support from many who agree with his stance on preserving marital fidelity and moral principles.

Israeli hostage pleas for husband’s release from Hamas

Aviva Siegel, a former Israeli hostage, has pleaded with international mediators to increase efforts to secure the release of her husband, who is still held captive by Hamas in Gaza.

Siegel herself was freed in November after enduring 51 days of captivity, but her husband Keith has been held for 193 days.

The couple was abducted from Kibbutz Kfar Aza during a Hamas attack on Israeli communities near Gaza on October 7. The attack resulted in approximately 1,200 casualties and 250 hostages.

According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, Israel’s retaliatory campaign has led to the deaths of over 33,000 Palestinians.

Aviva Siegel expressed disbelief that her husband remains in captivity under harsh conditions, nearly five months after she last saw him in Gaza.

“I’m not speaking. I’m screaming and need help from the whole world to help take Keith out and all the hostages,” she said.

“I was there for 51 days. I know what it’s like and when I try and imagine Keith being thrown into the corner, on a mattress on the floor, with no human rights at all. It breaks my heart, and he’s not there for a day and not for two days. I’m back for nearly five months,” she said.

Russia warns of stern retaliation if Western assets are touched

Russian officials threatened the West on Sunday with a “severe” response in the event that frozen Russian assets are confiscated, promising “endless” legal challenges and tit-for-tat measures.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russia would never cede territories seized from Ukraine in exchange for the return of frozen assets.

“Our motherland is not for sale,” Zakharova wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

“An Russian assets must remain untouched because otherwise there will be a severe response to Western thievery. Many in the West have already understood this. Alas, not everyone.”

Reacting to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, the United States and its allies imposed restrictions on dealings with Russia’s central bank and finance ministry. They also froze approximately $300 billion worth of Russian sovereign assets in Western nations, primarily in European rather than American financial institutions.

In a distinct statement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked that there remains a significant amount of Western capital in Russia, which could become the focus of Moscow’s retaliatory actions.

“The prospects for legal challenges (against the confiscation of Russian assets) will be wide open,” he said. “Russia will take advantage of those and will endlessly defend its interests.”

  • Australians protest against rise of killings of women

Australians protest against rise of killings of women

Rallies have occurred throughout Australia following a surge in recent incidents of violence against women.

Protesters are advocating for gender-based violence to be officially recognized as a national emergency, with calls for more stringent laws to combat it.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has acknowledged the severity of the issue, describing it as a national crisis.

On average, a woman in Australia has lost her life to violence every four days this year.

Organizer Martina Ferrara emphasized the need for alternative reporting avenues for victim survivors, empowering them to share their stories and navigate their healing and reporting processes.

“And we want the government to acknowledge this is an emergency action and take immediate action.”

Speaking at a march in the capital Canberra attended by thousands of protesters, Mr Albanese admitted the government at all levels needed to do better.

“We need to change culture, the attitudes, the legal system and the approach by all governments,” he said.

“We need to make sure that this isn’t up to women, it’s up to men to change men’s behaviour as well,” he added.

Responding to calls by protestors for violence against women to be classified as a national emergency, Mr Albanese said the classification was normally used during floods or bushfires to release a temporary injection of cash.

“We don’t need one month or two months – we need to address this in a serious way, week by week, month by month, year by year,” he said.

His comments were met with mixture of heckles and cheers,

But Australia’s federal attorney general, Mark Dreyfus, has rejected holding a royal commission into gender-based violence.

Mr Albanese has repeatedly called gender-based violence an epidemic but it’s not new: in 2021, marches took place across the country over allegations of sexual misconduct within the government.

In Adelaide, it was estimated around 3,000 people rallied outside the city’s parliament building on Saturday.

Protests have also taken place in Brisbane, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Newcastle over Friday and Saturday, 9News reported.

Recent killings have put the issue back in the spotlight.

Earlier this month, a man stabbed six people to death in a Sydney shopping centre. Five of the victims were women and the police are looking at whether they were the target.

New South Wales Police Force commissioner Karen Webb said “the offender focused on women and avoided the men”.

The rallies also coincided with the charging of a man with the alleged murder of 30-year-old mother-of-four Erica Hay, who was found dead after a house fire in Perth earlier this month.

In all, 27 women have been killed in the first 119 days of 2024, according to data compiled by the campaign group Destroy the Joint.

‘Bobrisky receives no special treatment, wears prisons uniforms’ – Correctional Service

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Lagos State has refuted rumors suggesting that the well-known social media personality, Idris Okuneye, commonly known as Bobrisky, resides in a VIP apartment within the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

Several online reports alleged that Bobrisky, who is currently serving a six-month prison term for abusing naira notes, has been enjoying special privileges in a newly constructed VIP apartment within the facility.

However, the NCoS, in its recent press statement signed by spokesperson Rotimi Oladokun, has categorically denied such claims.

The statement explicitly stated that there are no en-suite cells or one-bedroom flats at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

It clarified that Bobrisky, like other convicted inmates, is housed in a shared cell within the facility.

The statement emphasized: “The Nigerian Correctional Service Lagos State Command wishes to address some mischievous and misleading online publications that have come to its attention.”

“Without prejudice to NCoS right to seek legal redress for the libelous publication, outlined are clarifications on the said issues.

“The convicted inmate, Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju a.k.a. Bobrisky is currently serving a six-month jail term for abuse and mutilation of the naira note within the custody of the custodial center in the state.

“The Convict is entitled to the reformative and rehabilitative platforms, either educational and/or vocational training as provided to all inmates in custody.

“Idris has been allocated a shared cell with other convicted inmates. There are no en-suite or ‘one-bedroom flat’ style cells in our Custodial Centre as the cell blocks infrastructure is built as shared buildings to accommodate multiple inmates.

“Idris is being treated just as every other inmate without any special amenities or privilege accorded. All inmates are entitled to family and legal visits. These visits are monitored and regulated by NCoS.”

  • Sierra Leone power crisis restored

    Sierra Leone power crisis restored

Sierra Leone has finally seen the return of electricity supplies after enduring weeks of power cuts, a relief that came after the country settled a portion of its $48 million (£38 million) debt to a Turkish firm.

This crucial $18 million payment coincided with the resignation of the country’s energy minister, who took full responsibility for the crisis.

Freetown, the capital, largely relies on electricity from a Turkish ship stationed off the coast, but severe supply reductions—from 60 megawatts to 6 megawatts—had been enforced due to unpaid bills, exacerbating the prolonged disruption.

The power shortages had profound impacts, with residents enduring days without power, and hospitals grappling with the consequences. Tragically, at least one infant reportedly succumbed due to the lack of electricity, highlighting the dire consequences.

Medical professionals resorted to using mobile phones for illumination during procedures, underscoring the critical need for uninterrupted power.

Before the restoration of power, Fatmata Gassim, a second-year engineering student in Freetown, voiced her frustration, questioning how daily tasks such as ironing clothes and cooking could be accomplished without electricity.

The resignation of Kanja Sesay prompted the direct supervision of the energy ministry by President Julius Maada Bio’s office, indicating a significant shift in management.

This isn’t the first time Karpowership has wielded its leverage over African nations due to unpaid bills, having previously cut off power to Guinea-Bissau.

The floating power plants operate by converting gas into electricity, offering a vital energy source for nations with struggling infrastructure.

Despite some progress, access to electricity remains limited in sub-Saharan Africa, with over 50% of the population lacking grid connections, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad).

  • Heatwave in Mali making ice more costly than bread

Heatwave in Mali making ice more costly than bread

In some parts of Mali, the cost of ice cubes has surpassed that of milk and bread due to record heat.

“I’ve come to buy ice because it’s very hot now,” says 15-year-old Fatouma Yattara as she visits her local vendor in the capital, Bamako.

Amidst extended power outages rendering her fridge useless, she turns to ice cubes as a makeshift solution to preserve food and beat the scorching heat of a heatwave, where temperatures have skyrocketed to 48°C.

It works to an extent, but price hikes are making life even harder. “In some places it’s 100 francs CFA ($0.20; £0.16)” for a small bag, she says, “even 300, 500 – it’s too expensive.”

As a result, ice becomes pricier than bread, with a typical baguette typically priced at around 250 CFA.

For Nana Konaté Traoré, the situation is even more challenging, as she now finds herself compelled to cook daily instead of the previous routine of a few times per week.

“We often go a whole day without power,” she says, “so, the food goes bad, and you have to throw it away”.

The problems began almost a year ago, with Mali’s state power company failing to match growing demand after accumulating hundreds of millions of dollars in debt in recent years. Many Malians do not have back-up generators as it is expensive to refuel them.

No electricity means no fans at night, forcing many to sleep outside. And it is affecting people’s health.

“We really suffer,” says Soumaïla Maïga, a young man from the Yirimadio district on the outskirts of Bamako.

“At night it can reach 46C – it’s unbearable because I suffer from dizziness. I have to pour water on myself to cope.”

Since March, temperatures have soared above 48C in parts of Mali, killing more than 100 people. Most vulnerable are the elderly and the very young.

“We were seeing about 15 hospitalisations a day,” says Prof Yacouba Toloba, who works at the university hospital in Bamako.

“Many patients are dehydrated – the main symptoms are coughs and bronchial congestion. Some also have respiratory distress,” he tells the BBC.

Schools in some areas have closed as a precaution, and people in the Muslim-majority nation were advised not to fast during the Ramadan period which ended recently.

“We need to plan more for these situations, which will perhaps come back. This time it took us by surprise,” adds Prof Toloba.

The deadly heatwave is also affecting neighbouring countries such as Senegal, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger and Chad.

Human-induced climate change is to blame for these extreme highs, according to scientists at World Weather Attribution (WWA).

“Extreme 5-day maximum heat as rare as the observed event over Mali/Burkina Faso would have been 1.5C cooler and 1.4C cooler over the larger Sahel region if humans had not warmed the planet by burning fossil fuels,” their latest report says.

With temperatures expected to remain above 40C in Bamako over the next few weeks, people are trying to adapt to their new normal.

As sun sets in the capital, Ms Konaté Traoré takes several large mats outside to her yard and lays them down.

“We have to be outside all the time because of the heat. When it’s hot I get sick,” she says.

    “It’s not easy at all.”

“There is no bad blood between Daddy Lumba and me” – Nana Acheampong clarifies beef rumor

Renowned Ghanaian highlife musician Nana Acheampong has addressed the longstanding rumors of discord between him and his brother from the music industry, Daddy Lumba.

Contrary to popular belief, Acheampong clarified that there was no animosity between them as purported by their fans.

He revealed that they made a genuine decision to split as solo artiste.

But it was never the reason that they had a beef.

“There is no bad blood between my brother Lumba and me. We never said we were fighting and informed you to also fight. You were the ones who made up your minds to fight because you thought we were fighting. I think people didn’t understand why we had to split up.

“They thought we had a fight and fell apart; they didn’t know we had an amicable decision to be solo artistes. Nobody even took a step to ask us why we decided to split, they just perceived that we fought,” the musician clarified during an interview on GHPage TV.

‘We are not twins or blood brothers’ – Nana Acheampong on resemblance with Daddy Lumba

While much attention has been drawn to the perceived music feud between Daddy Lumba and Nana Acheampong, their uncanny resemblance remains a focal point of discussion.

Despite being depicted as rivals in the highlife music scene, the similarities between these two icons outweigh their differences.

Addressing these perceptions, Nana Acheampong revealed that their relationship transcends mere competition and is rooted in brotherhood.

Speaking to GHPage TV, the Ghanaian highlife legend emphasized that although they are not biologically related, they often find themselves paralleling each other’s actions.

Nana Acheampong noted that their likeness extends beyond physical appearance to encompass their musical styles, leaving him astounded by the parallels.

The ‘Nanka ebeye den’ hitmaker disclosed that the resemblance is so striking that he frequently faces inquiries about whether they share blood ties or are even twins.

“For the resemblance, people talk about it a lot. I get a lot of comments about it and he does experience the same. People actually think we are blood brothers or twins.

“We find ourselves doing the same things even if we are out of each other’s sight. For instance, when I made my hairstyle, I didn’t even know he had done the same thing. Look at my face, my hair, and look at his,” he stated.

Nana Acheampong also recounted an interesting instance when Daddy Lumba’s mother once mistook him for her son.

“I remember I had this outfit that I didn’t know he also had. There was an instance where I went to visit Lumba’s mother one day and she thought it was her son. She said, ‘Kwadwo, why didn’t you tell me before coming,” he recalled.

Tackling claims of ‘rivalry’ between them he said,

“There is no bad blood between my brother Lumba and me. We never said we were fighting and informed you to also fight. You were the ones who made up your minds to fight because you thought we were fighting. I think people didn’t understand why we had to split up.

“They thought we had a fight and fell apart; they didn’t know we had an amicable decision to be solo artistes. Nobody even took a step to ask us why we decided to split, they just perceived that we fought.”

  • Elon Musk visits Beijing to discuss enabling autonomous driving mode on Tesla cars – Reports

Elon Musk visits Beijing to discuss enabling autonomous driving mode on Tesla cars – Reports

Media reports have it that Elon Musk, is in Beijing to discuss implementing autonomous driving mode on Tesla cars in China.

Mr. Musk aims to introduce Full Self Driving (FSD) capabilities in China and transfer locally collected data abroad to enhance its algorithms.

While FSD is operational in countries like the US, it is not yet available in China.

This development follows a US report linking Tesla’s autonomous driving features to at least 13 accidents, including one fatality.

China stands as Tesla’s second-largest market. Competitors such as Xpeng, headquartered in Guangzhou, are striving to rival Tesla by incorporating similar self-driving features in their vehicles.

To address concerns, Tesla has previously made efforts to reassure Chinese authorities, including establishing a data center in Shanghai to process consumer data in compliance with local regulations.

The visit coincides with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) investigation into whether a recall effectively addressed safety issues related to Tesla’s driver assistance system.

The NHTSA noted that despite requirements for drivers to remain attentive and ready to take control when autonomous driving is activated, drivers involved in the crashes “failed to sufficiently engage.” The regulator’s analysis occurred before Tesla’s announced recall intended to address the issue.

Tesla’s software is designed to ensure driver attention and limit the feature’s use to suitable conditions, such as highway driving.

Mr. Musk has pledged that Teslas will serve as autonomous “robotaxis” for years. In 2015, he projected Teslas would achieve “full autonomy” by 2018, and in 2019, he anticipated robotaxis would be operational the following year.

This month, the Tesla CEO announced plans to unveil the company’s robotaxi in August.

Critics allege that Mr. Musk consistently exaggerates the potential of full autonomous driving to boost the company’s stock price, which has declined due to challenges such as global declines in demand for electric vehicles and competition from lower-cost Chinese manufacturers. Mr. Musk refutes these claims.

The carmaker’s profits plummeted in the first three months of the year to $1.13 billion (£910 million), down from $2.51 billion in 2023. Its stock has plummeted by 43% this year.

I don’t worry about death prophecies , I commit it to God – Kofi Kinaata

Ghanaian artist Kofi Kinaata has offered his view on death prophecies, expressing a lack of concern and placing his trust in a higher authority.

During a recent interview on Joy TV, the acclaimed musician highlighted his faith and confidence in God’s guidance, adopting a composed and philosophical attitude towards predictions of death or adversity.

“I don’t worry about death prophecies, I leave it to God,” Kofi Kinaata remarked, reflecting on the various prophecies that have surfaced over time regarding the fate of individuals in Ghana’s entertainment industry.

His remarks follow a recent online death prophecy concerning him. In the viral video, a pastor can be heard urging individuals to pray for Kofi’s deliverance from the snares of the devil.

“…and that you a man that sings that they call him Kofi Kinaata, that represents Takoradi, they should pray for him. I kid you not. I don’t give prophecies about these musicians. I don’t do that. But in the hour when the angel was speaking to me, I saw him and the angel told me he was the next they were going for. They will cut off his life prematurely if care is not taken,” he said.

According Kinaata, he had received a lot of such prophecies.

“I hear this every month, sometimes in a month it would come from different places”

“I don’t even want to talk about it. That’s what he has seen and he’s saying it. Maybe me too I have seen it and I haven’t come out to say it,” he said.

He further noted that he prays about five (5) times a day not because of said prophecies, but because of his own Christian beliefs as he was tired of hearing them.

‘I’ll take money to join a ‘dumsor’ protest – Comedian Warris

Calls have emerged for Ghanaian celebrities and influencers to take to the streets in protest against the escalating issue of erratic power supply in the nation.

While some celebrities have embraced this initiative, others remain skeptical.

In response to the situation, Ghanaian comedian Warris expressed his stance, stating that he would only participate if compensated. He contended that in Ghana, organizers of such protests typically have substantial financial support, thus he would request payment before engaging in such an endeavor.

Warris views the protest as a business partnership rather than a voluntary service to the country.

“If they call me and there is money, then it is for a good course. It is for a good course that there is light for us to work and get money. If they call me and they tell me they want to partner with my brand I will join them. Fixing the light is a good course and it’s the lord’s work. My issue is that if I’m selected then I’ll have to be paid.

“Let’s say for example if I decide to join Ola Micheal for a demonstration, I will have to take money before I present myself for such a demonstration. This is because I don’t know where Ola passed and the kind of money he has taken from the powers that be to organize such a demonstration,” he retorted.

Grow up! – Gyedu-Blay Ambolley reacts to Shatta Wale’s recent outburst

Some weeks ago, following the Abeka Salafest concert, Shatta Wale once again targeted Stonebwoy on social media.

Initial reports indicated that Shatta Wale and his ‘rival,’ Stonebwoy, were both slated to perform at the same event.

However, it later surfaced that Stonebwoy opted out of the show, citing a desire to avoid any potential confrontation with Shatta, particularly in light of his recent online tirades.

In response to Stonebwoy’s absence, Shatta Wale took to social media to vent his frustrations, directing insults and mockery towards the Burniton Music head.

In light of these developments, Ghanaian highlife musician Gyedu-Blay Ambolley remarked that it was time for Shatta Wale to mature.

The artist behind “Adwoa Amissah” acknowledged that while conflicts are commonplace in showbiz, those occurring in the present era are less than ideal.

He subsequently encouraged Shatta Wale to communicate his grievances with dignity and respect.
