American-Israeli hostage makes first appearance in Hamas video

Hamas released a video on Saturday featuring two hostages: Keith Siegel, who holds both American and Israeli citizenship, and Omri Miran from Israel.

In the footage, Siegel, seemingly under coercion, appeals to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to engage in negotiations with Hamas for their release. This marks the first appearance of Siegel in a video since he and his wife were abducted by Hamas from their residence in Kibbutz Kfar Aza on October 7.

CNN has not been able to authenticate the time or location of the video’s recording. However, the hostages mentioned their inability to observe the Jewish holiday of Passover, which concludes on Tuesday. Miran expressed this sentiment.

“I have been here for 202 days,” which suggests the video was filmed on Thursday.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment.

This is the second hostage video released by Hamas in recent days. Last Wednesday, the group released a video featuring Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American hostage abducted from the Nova music festival on October 7.

In the video, which lacks a specific date, Goldberg-Polin is depicted with a portion of his left arm missing, several inches above the hand.

The latest footage from Hamas prompted a response from Siegel’s family in a video released on Saturday by the Hostages Families Forum Headquarters.

“Keith, I love you, we will fight until you return,” said his wife Aviva, who was released in November as part of the last hostage deal after 51 days in captivity.

“Seeing my father today only emphasizes to all of us how much we must reach a deal as soon as possible and bring everyone home,” his daughter, Ilan, said. “I demand that the leaders of this country watch this video and see (our) father crying out for help.”

The hostage forum called the proof of life of Siegel and Miran “the clearest evidence that the Israeli government must do everything to approve a deal for the return of all the hostages before Independence Day (May 14). The living should return for rehabilitation, and the murdered should receive a dignified burial,” the group said in a statement.

“Now is the time for the government and its leader to prove through actions their commitment to the citizens of Israel who await the return of the hostages. The Israeli government must not miss this opportunity to bring them all home!” the statement added.

On October 7, Hamas militants forcibly entered the residence of Omri Miran, his wife, and their two daughters at Nahal Oz Kibbutz. Miran was taken captive, but fortunately, his family members survived the ordeal.

  • ‘I bought a house for my mother from my collabo with Burna Boy’ – Tarico

‘I bought a house for my mother from my collabo with Burna Boy’ – Tarico

When Mozambican DJ and super-producer Tarico concocted a particularly lively beat one day, little did he know how drastically it would alter his life and that of his two companions.

Inspired by the sound of coins jangling in a pocket, songwriter and vocalist Nelson Tivane coined the phrase “Yaba Buluku.”

With his gravelly, powerful voice, Preck belted out the lyric, turning it into an instant hit.

“After we concluded the song we went to a rural zone and we put a car with a big sound there, and we connected the song on the car and we saw many people dancing and ask ‘Who is the owner of this song?’ Then we knew this song was going to be big!”Tarico recalls, chuckling.

None other than the African Giant, Burna Boy, realized the strength of Yaba Buluku and jumped on the remix, a move which had a massive impact on Tarico, Tivane and Preck.

“We were travelling all over Africa. Too many big artists were asking us for features. People started to know our faces outside of Mozambique. We became internationals,” says Nelson.

“And money! I bought a car, land, and a house for my mother,” adds Preck.

Now calling themselves Yaba Buluku Boyz, the trio dropped their first album, Donsa, on Friday.

Like the original hit, it is a high-energy, danceable amapiano, and features big African names including Ghana’s dancehall king Shatta Wale, Timaya from Nigeria, and Harmonize from Tanzania.

“Music for us is coming out naturally, it’s an organic thing,” says Tivane,

“When Tarico is done with the beat, he shows the boys and we start to exchange ideas. When we get to the studio, it is magical, we feel the energy. I love all the songs on the album.”

Netizen allegedly drags Shatta Wale over King Promise’s Singapore success

Ghanaian Afrobeats sensation King Promise is currently making waves across the Asian continent during his tour, and as a result, his ‘big brother’ Charles Nii Armah is facing some collateral damage.

A video showcasing King Promise’s electrifying performance in Singapore, where he reportedly became the first Afrobeats artist to sell out such a massive venue, has stirred up some online trolls targeting Shatta Wale.

Wale, who has shifted his focus from advancing his career to engaging in frequent social media attacks on others, has left many social media users feeling frustrated.

Following the circulation of King Promise’s performance video on social media, one internet user took a jab at Wale, highlighting his penchant for attacking Stonebwoy rather than prioritizing his own career advancement.

“Opana will be in Ghana fooling his carrier whilst boys are putting their names on globe,” one netizen wrote.

Ayra Starr ready for criticism as she joins Chris Brown on US tour

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has stated her readiness to face any criticism regarding her choice to open for US musician Chris Brown during his upcoming US tour.

Chris Brown’s highly publicized assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 garnered significant media attention, making headlines worldwide.

As a result of the assault, Brown was sentenced to five years’ probation and a community service order.

When questioned about the possibility of facing criticism for touring with Brown due to the assault incident, Starr addressed the issue during an interview on the BBC’s Focus on Africa podcast:

“I’m prepared, I’m ready… I won’t respond, I’ll let people do their thing and I’m just going to work.”

“Rihanna is my queen but I try to, like, separate my work”.

Starr, who has rapidly become one of Africa’s most popular musicians, said Rihanna is her “number one” and she would like to collaborate with the Barbados-born icon “by God’s grace”.

Starr has recently completed recording her second album, titled “The Year I Turned 21.”

  • Eno Barony raps better than Strongman – Medikal

Medikal, the renowned artist behind “Too Risky,” recently weighed in on two Ghanaian rap artists.

In his assessment, Medikal proclaimed Eno Barony as Ghana’s top female rapper, asserting that she outperforms Strongman, one of the nation’s leading rappers.

During media interviews to promote his upcoming concert, Medikal discussed his perspective with Adesope-shopsydoo in London.

Medikal arrived in London on April 25, 2024, in preparation for his highly anticipated Indigo 02 concert, scheduled for May 3, 2024.

“There are a lot of people holding the rap culture, like Strongman and Eno. Eno Barony is the dopest female rapper in Ghana. She is so dope. She runs better than some of the male rappers. Eno raps better than Strongman,” he said in the interview shared by Gh Kwaku on Instagram.

He also discussed emerging talents in Ghana and their efforts to establish themselves in the music industry.

However, Medikal’s remarks sparked reactions among internet users, with some fearing they could ignite a feud between the two rappers, while others deemed the comparison unnecessary.

    Below are the reactions:

Medikal paaaa, how can eno rap better than Strongman, Even you medikal sef , you no dey rap better pass Strongman; stop that comparison!”.

“Why you go Dey there and say Eno is better than Strongman? just do your shii and go somewhere make you no compare anyone.”

“This is another way of promoting Eno and Strongman. What he said about them is a way of promoting their music … because someone who doesn’t know the difference between them will quickly go on YouTube and stream their songs to determine whether what MDK was saying is true or not …which will develop more streams and attention for both of them. The two of them are going to gain internet attention from our YouTubers, radio stations, and a whole lot more. the internet will talk about them for some days or weeks. So you people should shut up and learn from these guys.”

Addressing the prophecy on Joy Prime’s morning show, Kinaata acknowledged awareness of it but conveyed his lack of concern.

“I don’t even want to talk about it. That’s what he has seen, and he’s saying it. Maybe me too; I have seen it, and I haven’t come out to say it,” he said.

Kinaata also disclosed that receiving such prophecies had become routine in his life, as he has encountered them on a monthly basis ever since he embarked on his music career.

He clarified that his religious practice of praying five times a day is based on his Christian beliefs rather than fear of these prophecies. He expressed his desire to distance himself from such negative predictions.

  • ‘I provided 4 cars, rented in a luxurious estate for her – Shatta Wale on claims of abandoning his mother

‘I provided 4 cars, rented in a luxurious estate for her – Shatta Wale on claims of abandoning his mother

In the midst of online conflicts involving Shatta Wale, accusations of neglecting his mother often arise.

Despite repeatedly refuting these claims, the dancehall artist has taken additional steps to illustrate his support for his mother.

To counter assertions of abandonment, Shatta Wale has detailed various contributions he’s made to enhance his mother’s life. He highlights purchasing four cars for her and securing an upscale apartment in Accra, among other provisions.

These revelations emerge as some criticize Shatta Wale for allegedly neglecting his mother while focusing his attention on feuds, notably with Stonebwoy.

Ayisha Modi, in particular, criticized Shatta Wale for directing energy towards conflicts rather than caring for his mother.

“You are insulting someone’s dead mother while you can’t even feed or take care of your living mother. You just keep fooling. Bring yourself wai,” Ayisha Modi, a former member of Stonebwoy’s camp earlier stated.

However, addressing these claims, which are fast becoming a ‘label’, Shatta Wale said, “Everyone in my life has spent my money including my parents. That’s why when I hear people talk about my mother, you amaze me. People actually think I am not sensible enough, they think I abandoned my mother. They think I don’t take care of my mother.

“I gave my mother four cars and rented a house at an estate for her. You don’t know about these things yet you talk nonsense about me all the time. All the good things I did for her, she doesn’t appreciate.”

    Background

Sometime in 2022, Shatta Wale’s mother, Elsie Avemegah, took to social media to vent out her frustration after claims of being kicked out of her East Legon apartment which was rented out to her for 6 years.

In a series of radio interviews making rounds on social media, Shatta Wale’s mother who claims not to have set eyes on her son for over five years and counting, stated that her condition is worsening by the day and all efforts to reach out to him have proven futile.

“How can an old woman like me, over 60 years woman be roaming about the streets with polythene looking for a place to sleep? If night falls, I become worried because there is no place for me to sleep. Anyone feeding my son with bad counsel should stop because I am really suffering. For three weeks I have been in a mess.

“The security prevented me from entering the house. Those around him feeding his mind with lies should stop it. I haven’t done anything to Shatta to deserve this treatment. I am really hungry. Currently, I am living in a bush around Kasoa. For the past five years, I haven’t set my eyes on my son,” she earlier stated in one of the viral audios.

Shatta, who is said to have since not heeded his mother’s outcry, has experienced all forms of mockery and intense criticisms.

My parents’ divorce did not help me – Shatta Wale

Dancehall artist, Shatta Wale has shared his journey of coping with the trauma and profound challenges stemming from his parents’ divorce.

The dancehall artist revealed that he missed out on the chance to grow up under the care of both parents, a desire he had harbored since his youth and still carries with him today.

Shatta recounted the significant impact his parents’ marital troubles had on him, admitting that at one point, he felt compelled to leave home to preserve his mental well-being.

He explained how his parents’ decision profoundly affected his life, even leading to a period of homelessness for him.

“Growing up, I lived with my parents for a while but they did not help me. They made a mistake and broke up. They created a broken home; our home was broken and it affected me so much. Our broken home affected me. Anytime I talked or complained about this, they labelled me disrespectful. So, I left them. I left the house. I run from my parents.

“You know what my parents put me through? Because of them, I slept on the streets, I slept in front of stores. Those days, it was the prostitutes at Nkrumah Circle who were watching over me. I slept at filling stations at Circle including the one that got burnt. I slept on the streets of Adabraka and so on,” he stated during Facebook Live.

Shatta Wale mentioned that he has developed a coping mechanism of cutting people off due to trauma.
He explained that similar to how he ran away from his parents in the past, he continues to swiftly distance himself from anyone who causes him stress.

“As a result, I started running from stress, running from people who would stress me. That’s where I learned how to cut people off because I don’t want stress. I cut people off without thinking twice. I am the chief cutter. I have learned that in life, it is important to cut off anyone who wants to bring negativity into your life,” The SM boss stated.

  • Mexico announces victory in labor dispute over copper mine

Mexico announces victory in labor dispute over copper mine

On Friday, Mexico announced its success in a labor dispute. The dispute revolved around a mine operated by a top copper producer.

The United States had requested an investigation last year. The probe focused on alleged worker rights abuses at a Grupo Mexico mine.

Grupo Mexico, a Mexican mining and transport conglomerate, ranks as the world’s No. 4 copper producer.

Mexico contended that the United States-Mexico-Canada trade accord did not apply.

This was because the alleged labor violations predated the pact’s implementation in 2020.

“This ruling … sets a precedent of not allowing retroactivity in trade agreements,” Mexico’s economy and labor ministries said in a joint statement, adding that such cases should be avoided in labor and other trade disputes.

Operations at the San Martin mine, which produces lead, copper, zinc, and silver, ceased from 2007 to 2018 due to a strike.
Grupo Mexico stated that operations at the mine resumed in 2018 after obtaining worker approval.

However, the union claims that negotiations were conducted with a group of unauthorized employees.

Last year, a U.S. complaint referenced a request from a Mexican miners union led by Napoleon Gomez, an ally of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and currently a senator from the ruling party, along with two prominent U.S. labor organizations.

A union lawyer informed Reuters that they were awaiting confirmation of the panel’s decision before making any comments.

Mexican officials contended that although they discovered Grupo Mexico had “consistently violated workers’ freedom of association and collective bargaining rights for 16 years,” the matter was under the jurisdiction of national authorities.

In a statement on Friday, the company praised the Mexican government for “effectively defending our country’s sovereignty.”

  • Putin didn’t order Navalny’s killing – US intel suggests

Putin didn’t order Navalny’s killing – US intel suggests

The Wall Street Journal’s report has it that on Saturday, U.S. intelligence agencies have determined that it’s unlikely Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the killing of opposition politician Alexei Navalny at an Arctic prison camp in February.

Navalny, aged 47 at the time of his death, was known as Putin’s most vocal domestic critic. Despite being labeled as extremists by the authorities, his allies have accused Putin of orchestrating his murder and pledged to provide evidence to support their claim.

The Kremlin has consistently denied any state involvement. Last month, Putin described Navalny’s death as “sad” and stated he had been willing to exchange the jailed politician with the West, on the condition that Navalny never returned to Russia. Navalny’s allies claim negotiations toward such an exchange were in progress.

The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, stated that U.S. intelligence agencies had concluded that Putin probably did not order Navalny’s killing in February.

However, Washington has not absolved Putin of overall responsibility for Navalny’s death, given that the opposition politician had been a target of Russian authorities for years, was imprisoned on charges deemed politically motivated by the West, and had been poisoned with a nerve agent in 2020.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied any state involvement in the 2020 poisoning incident.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday he had seen the Journal’s report, which he said contained “empty speculation”.

“I’ve seen the material, I wouldn’t say it’s high quality material that deserves attention,” Peskov told reporters when asked about the matter.

Reuters could not independently verify the Journal report, which cited sources as saying the finding had been “broadly accepted within the intelligence community and shared by several agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the State Department’s intelligence unit.”

According to the paper’s sources, the U.S. assessment drew upon a variety of information, including classified intelligence, and an examination of public events, such as the timing of Navalny’s death coinciding with Putin’s re-election in March.

Leonid Volkov, a senior aide to Navalny, dismissed the U.S. findings as naive and ridiculous, as reported by the paper.

India probes facilities of spice producers MDH and Everest due to suspected contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is collecting data on products from Indian spice manufacturers MDH and Everest. This action comes after Hong Kong suspended sales of certain products from these companies due to allegations of containing elevated levels of a pesticide known to cause cancer.

“The FDA is aware of the reports and is gathering additional information about the situation,” an FDA spokesperson told Reuters on Friday.

This month, Hong Kong suspended sales of three MDH spice blends and an Everest spice mix for fish curries. Singapore also mandated a recall of the Everest spice mix, citing elevated levels of ethylene oxide, which poses health risks, including cancer with prolonged exposure.

Reuters broke the news of the U.S. FDA’s investigation into the alleged contamination of Indian spice products.

Both MDH and Everest have not yet responded to Reuters’ requests for comment on the issue. Everest has previously asserted the safety of its spices for consumption, while MDH has not addressed inquiries about its products.

MDH and Everest spices are widely popular in India and are distributed in Europe, Asia, and North America. India’s food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), is currently evaluating the quality standards of these companies following the regulatory actions taken in Hong Kong and Singapore.

India’s Spices Board, responsible for regulating spice exports, announced on Wednesday that it had requested export data on MDH and Everest from authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore. The board is collaborating with the companies to identify the root cause of the quality issues, while inspections at their plants have commenced.

In 2019, certain batches of MDH products were recalled in the U.S. due to salmonella contamination.

  • Missiles from Russia strike energy facilities across 3 regions in Ukraine

Missiles from Russia strike energy facilities across 3 regions in Ukraine

On Saturday, Russia unleashed a volley of missiles targeting Ukrainian power facilities, striking locations in both the central and western regions of the country.

This onslaught inflicted damage to equipment and resulted in injuries to at least one energy worker, according to officials.

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko conveyed via the Telegram messaging app that the Russian strikes specifically targeted the Dnipropetrovsk region in central Ukraine, as well as the western regions of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.

DTEK, Ukraine’s leading private energy company, reported that four of its thermal power stations bore the brunt of the attacks.

“The enemy again massively shelled the Ukrainian energy facilities,” DTEK said in a statement. “The company’s equipment was seriously damaged. At this very moment, energy workers are trying to eliminate the consequences of the attack.”

Galushchenko reported that one energy worker sustained injuries, while DTEK confirmed casualties without providing further details.

The commander of the Ukrainian air force revealed that Russia conducted coordinated overnight strikes, deploying a total of 34 cruise and ballistic missiles, of which Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 21.

Since March 22, Russian forces have intensified their attacks on Ukraine’s power infrastructure, targeting thermal and hydropower stations almost daily.

Officials stated that Ukraine has lost approximately 80% of its thermal generation capacity and about 35% of its hydropower capacity. The country’s energy system had already been weakened by a Russian air campaign during the initial phase of the war in February 2022.

Despite mild spring weather in recent weeks, Ukraine has been grappling with an electricity deficit, leading the government to implement scheduled blackouts in various regions and resort to emergency electricity imports.

Governor Serhiy Lysak reported that Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 13 Russian missiles in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

“Unfortunately, we could not avoid the consequences. Energy facilities in Dnipropetrovsk and Kryvyi Rih regions were damaged, fires broke out.”

Lysak noted that the city of Kryvyi Rih experienced disruptions to its water supply.

Meanwhile, in the western regions of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, firefighters were tackling extensive fires at multiple energy facilities, as reported by regional officials.

“It is difficult for the energy system to maintain the production and consumption balance. We have to help,” said Maksym Kozytskyi, Lviv regional governor, urging residents to save electricity, especially during the peak evening hours.

Transitioning seamlessly into her new role, she commenced the session with a heartfelt song before sharing biblical verses from the Book of Isaiah, aligning with her chosen theme, “Accelerating God’s Speed in Life.”

Mr. Beautiful lauds NDC, criticizes NPP leadership and staunch supporters over poor governance

Clement Bonney, popularly known as Mr. Beautiful, has expressed disappointment with the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The actor expressed concerns about what he sees as the failure of the NPP to fulfill its promises and adequately support its supporters.

Mr. Beautiful expanded his critique to fellow actors Kalybos and Agya Koo, who have aligned themselves with the NPP.

He indicated that if he were in their position, he would feel too embarrassed to appear in public because of what he views as the absence of significant advancements during the NPP’s administration.

“If I were Kalybos or Agya Koo, I would cover my head with a scarf because I would be too ashamed to show my face in public.

“It has been 8 years, what do they have to show for it?” he asked.

He recognized the influence his backing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had on his career but asserted that he would make the same decision again without any hesitation or remorse.

He stated that his choice empowered others to openly express their political allegiances.

Mr. Beautiful praised individuals, especially in the Ashanti Region, who have transitioned their support from the NPP to the NDC.

He contended that considering the present condition of the Ghanaian economy, they have made a wise choice.

  • MHA allocates the month of May to boost mental health awareness

MHA allocates the month of May to boost mental health awareness

In a notable effort to advance mental health well-being, the Mental Health Authority of Ghana, along with the Ministry of Health and various stakeholders, has declared May as “Purple Month,” dedicated to mental health awareness.

This initiative aligns Ghana with other nations such as the United States and the United Kingdom, which also dedicate May to similar awareness campaigns.

Prof. Pinaman Appau, CEO of the Mental Health Authority, underscored the importance of extending awareness efforts beyond the conventional observance of World Mental Health Day on October 10th.

“A single day is not enough to address the complex issues surrounding mental health. By expanding our focus to the entire month, we can make a more substantial impact,” said Prof. Appau.

Previously, Ghana encountered difficulties as October’s observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month overlapped, diverting attention away from mental health issues.

The transition to May is strategic, sidestepping conflicts and amplifying the impact of the awareness campaign.

Ghana’s Purple Month is inspired by Mental Health America’s initiative started in 1949. Prof. Appau noted, “We are adopting a model that has shown great success in other nations. Our goal is to boost mental health awareness, combat stigma, and celebrate recovery, making a genuine difference in the lives of Ghanaians.”

    Why Purple?

Purple has been the emblematic colour of the Mental Health Authority since its inception. It symbolizes a blend of the calming stability of blue with the vibrant energy of red.

This colour choice reflects the Authority’s commitment to providing hope and support to those affected by mental health conditions.

“Purple stands for dignity, peace, and independence, all of which are critical in the context of mental health,” Prof. Appau explained.

    The Significance of Purple Month

Mental health awareness is crucial for the holistic well-being of individuals across various dimensions of life.

Unfortunately, stigma and lack of understanding often prevent people from seeking necessary help, leaving them isolated and reducing their life quality and productivity.

Purple Month seeks to change that by advancing mental health treatment and behavioural health education.

“We aim to foster dialogue, encourage proactive approaches to mental health, and ensure early intervention,” stated Prof. Appau.

This year’s theme is: “Movement: Moving for Our Mental Health.”

According to Prof Appau, the campaign aims to increase awareness about the significance of mental health and the beneficial impact of physical activity on psychological well-being.

Dr. Pinaman Appau explained further that more than 2.3 million Ghanaians experience mental health disorders, and this makes awareness, education, and support for mental health advocacy important now, than ever.

“In keeping with the Authority’s mission to raise awareness among the general public, elevate the voices of mental health service users and caregivers, and fight for the rights and needs of individuals impacted, this month-long campaign also exhorts people to include movement in their daily lives as a means of promoting mental wellness,” she added.

During Purple Month, the Mental Health Authority focuses on several key outcomes:

Enhanced Understanding of Mental Health Symptoms: Diagnosis of mental health conditions provides validation and facilitates access to appropriate treatments and coping mechanisms. Open discussions during Purple Month enable individuals to comprehend their experiences and seek support effectively.

Diminished Stigma Surrounding Mental Health: Purple Month endeavours to bridge gaps in understanding and combat the enduring stigma surrounding mental illness. Through education and awareness-raising activities, communities can shift their perceptions of mental health, fostering greater acceptance and support for individuals facing mental health challenges.

Enhanced Mental Health Knowledge: Educating caregivers, employers, parents, and the broader community about the impact of mental health on daily life is crucial for fostering supportive environments. By prioritizing mental health care, communities can empower individuals to thrive and lead fulfilling lives.

Promotion of Mental Well-being: Purple Month highlights the distinction between mental health and mental illness, promoting mental well-being as a proactive approach to emotional health and cognitive agility. By reducing stigma and embracing

      A Call to Action

The Mental Health Authority invites everyone to engage in Purple Month activities, which include media campaigns, local events, and educational programs.

These initiatives are designed to enhance community support for mental health and encourage individuals to seek help and celebrate recovery.

As Purple Month unfolds, it becomes more than just an observance; it’s a vital movement toward improving mental health understanding, reducing stigma, and empowering individuals to lead more fulfilled lives.

Prof. Appau’s message is clear: “Let’s embrace Purple Month as our chance to foster a supportive environment where mental well-being is prioritized, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.”

Prof. Appau said the activities will include school, corporate, and community outreach programs, educational workshops, and traditional and social media campaigns designed to inform and involve the public in mental health discourses.

She further implores Ghanaians to add a touch of purple this month in their various places of work and gatherings, wear ‘purple month’ or mental health-related T-shirts, disseminate mental health-related information on their social media handles, and share their journey of movement and wellness on social media using the hashtags #MoveForMentalHealthGH and #PurpleMonth.

Dr. Appau called on citizens to “inspire each other with our commitment to mental wellness.”

    1. Abandoned Luxury: Cost of car maintenance scares owners

Abandoned Luxury: Cost of car maintenance scares owners

The ownership of a vehicle is increasingly becoming financially burdensome, even for those considered affluent in the city, with some owners of luxury cars resorting to leaving their once-valued assets at mechanic workshops.

Escalating insurance premiums, along with the mounting costs of fuel and maintenance, are forcing car owners to relinquish their vehicles.

Vehicles have become very important means of transport and a key component for running the country’s economy.

However, these days, owning even the smallest of vehicles is considered luxury or a social signifier of an aspiring middle-class household.

The prices of vehicles have reached eye-popping levels, yet even more costly have spare parts and maintenance become.

As such, the title ‘car owner’ is becoming a privilege for a few.

        Prices of some cars

A newly-imported 2010 Toyota Yaris, a dependable compact car with good fuel economy but by no means a luxury car, sells for GH¢93,000.

        A G-Wagon parked at a mechanic workshop.

        A newly-imported 2008 Toyota Corolla sells for GH¢85,000. A 2013 Honda Fit sells for GH¢135,000.

A G-Wagon gathering dust at a roadside mechanic workshop.

It’s no wonder the price of Ghana-used cars have shot up as people hold on to their cars with care, knowing they will not be able to afford new ones.

        Observation

In a striking trend, some owners of luxury cars are increasingly leaving their vehicles at mechanic workshops.

Some of these cars have been there for nearly two years.

Jaguar vehicles left at the mercy of the weather

“We are unable to trace a lot of the owners whose cars end up at our shops,” a mechanic, Isaac Adjei, told TV3 in an interview.

Models of Benz, Toyota and BMW have been left at the mercy of the weather and decorated with dust.

        Abandoned luxury cars

The mechanics, who receive over ten faulty cars daily, are worried about the limited space to keep the piled-up cars.

According to Adjei, “we usually repair a lot of the cars by the roadside due to insufficient space.”

The cost of maintaining luxury vehicles in terms of routine servicing and parts replacements for brands like Jaguar have exploded.

Vehicle dealers blame exchange rates, import duties and soaring insurance premiums.

Clifford Ansu is an official with the Vehicle and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana (VADUG). He observes that even the cost of parts replacements for ‘smaller’ cars have skyrocketed.

“The fact that I am driving a V8 doesn’t mean that you should increase the prices of the duty of V8 and the prices of its parts. Even these days the smaller cars that have small engines, their spare parts have also gone up.”

“Toyota Corolla 2016-2017 engine now is selling for 55,000-60,000 [cedis]. So, if you want to talk about V8 engine, then you are talking about a lot of money,” Ansu said.

        Visit to Abossey-Okai

Abossey Okai is a town in the Ablekuma Central Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

It hosts the largest automobile parts market of Ghana, with busy streets of traders.

In my off-record interactions with some owners of the luxury vehicles, they admitted the challenge they face in maintaining their cars.

Top of their worry was the rising cost of spare parts.

“Items I used to buy for 500 cedis have shot up to 600 cedis in less than 2 weeks,” a spare parts dealer, Kojo Acheampong noted.

Another dealer, Nana Atuobi, added that “these days I need the dollar equivalent of 150,000 cedis to import items that previously cost 38,000 cedis.”

Some wonder – whether owning a luxury vehicle means one is necessarily rich.

“If somebody is using V8 or any of those luxury cars, it is probably because of their safety. But don’t assume they are using such cars because they are rich so you want to increase taxes on the spare parts of such vehicles,” Clifford Ansu opined.

For spare parts dealer Acheampong, the message is simple: “Buy cars you can afford to maintain because we’d continue to increase cost of spare parts.”

On the other hand, there are some who are unable to drive their luxury vehicles due to wrong chassis or identification numbers, making the cars mere decorative items at home.

The safety, comfort or cozy rides these cars come with are in no doubt, but the explosion in maintenance and spare parts costs is depriving the owners of their once envied status in the neigbourhood.

If I were Kalyboss or Agya Koo, I would cover my head in shame for supporting NPP – Mr Beautiful

Ghanaian actor and comedian Clement Bonney, widely known as Mr. Beautiful, has voiced criticism against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), contending that their actions have caused embarrassment to their supporters.

Mr. Beautiful expressed his disappointment, suggesting that if he were in the shoes of fellow actors Kalybos or Agya Koo, who strongly aligned themselves with the NPP, he would feel too ashamed to appear in public.

He attributed this sentiment to what he perceived as the NPP’s failure to fulfill its promises and adequately support those who campaigned on their behalf.

“If I was Kalyboss or Agya Koo, I would cover my head with a scarf ‘mayafi’ because I would be too ashamed to show my face in public. It has been 8 years, what do they have to show for it,” he quizzed during an interview with Nana Yaa Brefo and Isaac Ekow JB on Yen Nsempa, Onua FM, April 26, 2024.

Mr. Beautiful admitted that his endorsement of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had impacted his career, yet he affirmed that he would make the identical decision again without hesitation or remorse, as it inspired others to follow suit.

He commended individuals, particularly in the Ashanti Region, who had switched their allegiance from the NPP to the NDC, suggesting that they have made the right decision given the current state of the Ghanaian economy.

“In 2016 because of what I did, now major celebrities in the NPP can come out to declare their political affiliation. Everyone was afraid to show their faces or political colours in public, which is unfortunate because everyone belongs to a party and everyone votes. That is why I disclosed the political party I am affiliated with in 2012.

“People criticised me and threatened not to patronise my movies because of this, now all those people who supported that agenda and mindset in Kumasi have migrated to the light. They now see what I saw in His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, he is good nurtured, he thinks of his people he is indeed a human being.

“The persons who have migrated to the NDC have seen the light, and if there was an award to be given, they should dully be awarded for making the right decision because the Ghanaian economy is not looking great nor promising at all,” he said.

He commended the NDC for the achievements made within their tenure, such as building new infrastructure like airports, harbours, schools, and hospitals, with what he saw as a lack of tangible progress under the NPP’s tenure.

“NDC in 4 years built new airports, harbours, more schools and more hospitals were built, but what do the NPP supporters have to show for their toil, when you all went to support President Akufo-Addo and his driver’s mate, Bawumia for 8 years, what do they have to show for it,” he quizzed.

        Motorcycle-riding assailants violently attack Accra’s Class FM/TV

The peaceful ambiance of the early morning in Accra was abruptly shattered when motorcycle-riding assailants carried out a bold attack on the premises of Class FM/TV on Thursday, April 25th.

Brandishing petrol bombs and hurling stones, the assailants targeted the reception area of the media firm, causing chaos and significant damage.

This incident, unfolding in the early hours of that fateful day, has prompted widespread concern and condemnation. The police have promptly launched an investigation into the matter to apprehend the perpetrators and ascertain their motives.

Abena Yiadom, the General Manager of Class FM/TV, shared details of the frightening experience in an exclusive interview with Citi News.

“This morning, on my way to work, I got a call from our administrator saying we had been attacked during the night,” Yiadom revealed. She described how the security personnel on duty witnessed the assailants arriving on motorcycles and launching their assault.

“The overnight security personnel said that they were here when they saw some men on motorbikes. They stopped right behind the wall that’s directly opposite our reception area. And then all of a sudden, they started throwing stones towards the reception area,” Yiadom explained.

The reception area, with its glass doors, became the primary target of the attackers. “As they threw the stones, the glasses shattered and then they started hurling what they believed to be petrol bombs inside, and it caught fire,” Yiadom recounted.

Thankfully, the absence of flammable materials in the reception area facilitated the swift extinguishing of the fire, averting additional damage.

The motive behind the attack remains elusive, leaving the staff and management of Class FM/TV perplexed and apprehensive.

This incident has sparked apprehension regarding the safety and security of media establishments in the nation, evoking memories of numerous similar attacks on other media outlets and journalists throughout the country.

Otumfuo@25: Asantehene lauded for contributing massively to peace and democracy in Ghana

Head of stakeholder relations for the Otumfuo Foundation, Kwame Owusu Ababio, emphasized the profound contributions of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to the peace, stability, and democratic progress of Ghana throughout the past quarter-century.

April 26th marks the exact 25-year milestone since Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s solemn oath-taking ceremony, where he pledged allegiance before the Golden Stool with unwavering commitment and honesty.

Speaking with Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday, Ababio highlighted Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s remarkable journey since assuming the throne a quarter-century ago, noting the enduring impact of his leadership.

“The king has been very phenomenal in his reign over the past 25-years and his rule has not focused on only cultural and traditional issues alone but transcends beyond traditional and cultural issues to political areas, where he has been able to link up with various governments to broker peace for other ethnic groups.

“And also lead government delegations where it was needful to go out there and solicit for help for the people of Ghana. And he has also been associated with the peaceful co-existence among various political, religious and ethnic groups.”

“You recall that in 2012 when the political temperature was very high prior to the general election, he had the courage and goodwill to make the political candidates sign a peace accord. So these and other things have been the high point of his legacy,” he said.

      4. Here are 4 strategies to conquer feelings of jealousy and envy

Here are 4 strategies to conquer feelings of jealousy and envy

At some stage, every individual experiences feelings of jealousy or envy towards others.

While these emotions are common, not all of them should be entertained; it’s essential to cultivate resilience against our emotions.

Envy and jealousy, in particular, can be pervasive emotions that may overwhelm us if left unchecked. Here are some effective approaches for managing these difficult feelings.

Remember that everyone has personal struggles too

Always remember that behind every success is a struggle. Most people do not showcase the less desirable parts of their lives—the aspects you wouldn’t envy.

Keep in mind that you might not be able to endure their hardships if you were in their shoes, which is why envying their achievements is unwise.

Understand the personal cost of envy and jealousy

Envy and jealousy are burdens that only you carry. Feeling envious or jealous of someone else is a heavy load, and you bear it alone.

Choosing to be genuinely happy for others not only frees you from this weight but also opens the door to potential blessings and opportunities. Otherwise, envy and jealousy can blind you to opportunities for your own growth and happiness.

Try to open up to the people you envy

Sometimes, expressing your feelings of envy in a light-hearted manner can be therapeutic. Sharing these feelings can help dissipate them, allowing you to laugh and talk it through, which often eases the bitterness and discontent these emotions foster.

Learn to accept that we all have different destinies

Understand that our paths in life are not the same; we are all meant to fulfill different roles and face different challenges.

While it may seem like some people have no problems, stepping into their shoes could reveal a very different reality. Remember, just because some carry their burdens well does not mean these burdens aren’t heavy.

By adopting these perspectives and practices, you can better manage feelings of jealousy and envy, leading to a healthier emotional state and more fulfilling relationships.

      5. 4 things you need to do to keep your lips moisturized

4 things you need to do to keep your lips moisturized

Do you use the right products to keep your lips plump and healthy? Stay calm, unlearn, and relearn some new ways to keep your lips moisturized and hydrated.

Moisturizing your lips is one of the most essential skincare routines many of us overlook. Many individuals ignore lip care as a minor aspect of their overall skincare routine, but deserting lip health can lead to discomfort, dryness, and chapping.

Soft, smooth lips make you feel more comfortable and confident in your appearance and elevate your overall aesthetic. However, here are 4 things you need to do to keep your lips moisturized:

        1. Use a hydrating lip balm regularly:

One way to moisturize your lips is by using a good hydrating lip balm that contains ingredients like petroleum jelly, shea butter, beeswax, vitamin E, or natural oils such as coconut oil or avocado oil.

These ingredients help the lips lock in moisture and prevent them from drying out. You can use it throughout the day when you feel your lips becoming chapped or dry. By making it a habit, you will notice a significant change in the appearance of your lips.

        2. Drink plenty of water to keep them hydrated

Drinking plenty of water keeps your body hydrated from within, which naturally moisturizes your lips. Drinking water keeps them smooth, soft, plump, and less prone to dryness or chapping.

By drinking adequate water, you give your lips the hydration they need to stay soft and healthy. It helps peel off dead skin cells and replace them with new ones, helping to maintain a natural moisture balance.

        3. Avoid licking your lips

Licking your lips can make them even drier, as saliva contains enzymes that are meant to break down food, not moisturize your lips.

Constantly licking your lips takes away the natural oils that keep them hydrated, leading to dryness and irritation. Instead of licking your lips, try using a lip moisturizer or lip balm to provide the protection and moisture your lips need.

        4. Exfoliate your lips with a sugar scrub

Exfoliating your lips makes them smooth and soft. Doing so three times a week can help get rid of dead cells and allow the moisturizer to penetrate, giving them a fresh appearance.

To make a simple sugar scrub, mix some sugar with a bit of honey or coconut oil to create a paste. Gently massage this mixture onto your lips in circular motions for a minute or two, then rinse it off with warm water. Finish off with a moisturizing lip balm to lock in the hydration.

In conclusion, proper lip care is an essential skincare routine. Making it a priority will give you the smooth, clean, and healthy lips that you’ll love.

Embrace the new lifestyle of making lip care part of your daily routine, and you’ll see the amazing improvement it brings.

Keeping your lips moisturized not only enhances their appearance but also boosts your confidence, allowing you to be your authentic self. So, embrace this new habit and enjoy the benefits of proper lip care.

      6. Here are 3 methods to prepare fresh orange juice without using a squeezer

Here are 3 methods to prepare fresh orange juice without using a squeezer

Whether you’re craving fresh orange juice for breakfast or need it for a recipe, there are several simple methods to get that golden nectar with tools you likely have in your kitchen.

Here are three easy ways to make fresh orange juice without a squeezer.

        Hand rolling method

Start by softening the orange to get the most juice. Roll the orange on your kitchen counter, applying a bit of pressure with your palm. Do this for about 20 seconds until the orange feels slightly softened.

Next, cut the fruit in half and hold one half over a bowl. Squeeze the orange tightly with your hands, twisting slightly to coax out as much juice as possible. This method is hands-on and can be a bit messy, but it’s super effective and quick.

        Fork twisting technique

For this technique, cut the orange in half as you would for the hand-rolling method. Take a fork and insert it into the halved section. Use the fork as a makeshift juicer: twist and turn it while squeezing the orange with your other hand.

This helps to break up the segments and release more juice. It’s a bit more labor-intensive than hand squeezing, but it can yield a surprising amount of juice, and you get to work out any frustrations by really getting into it!

        Grate and strain approach

This method requires a little more equipment but is excellent for extracting every bit of juice. Cut the orange into quarters. Then, using a box grater, grate the orange pieces over a bowl, flesh side down.

This technique helps break down the orange completely and captures not only the juice but also some of the pulp (which you can strain out if you prefer your juice pulp-free).

Once you’ve grated the fruit, gather the pulp in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth and squeeze over the bowl to ensure you get all the juice.

Whichever method you choose, making orange juice without a squeezer is a straightforward and satisfying way to enjoy a fresh, tangy treat. Plus, it’s a great way to impress your friends and family with your resourceful kitchen skills!

      7. These 5 ways will make a cheating partner confess immediately

These 5 ways will make a cheating partner confess immediately

Being suspicious of your partner’s fidelity can be emotionally exhausting, particularly when there’s no concrete evidence but lingering doubts remain.

Here are some refined strategies to help you gain clarity on your suspicions without resorting to invading their privacy.

Engage in casual conversation and listen carefully

Start by casually inquiring about your partner’s day and the individuals they interacted with. Maintaining a relaxed tone helps prevent them from feeling defensive. Dishonest individuals typically steer clear of providing detailed accounts, so gently encourage them to expand on the specifics of their experiences.

        Check consistency without alerting suspicion

Revisit the conversation on another day, but start from the middle of their previous narrative and ask them to continue. Pay close attention to the details.

Inconsistencies or alterations in their story may indicate deception. Approach these follow-up questions with the same casual demeanor to avoid putting them on guard.

Don’t ask yes and no questions

Opt for open-ended questions to prompt more elaborate responses. This technique makes it harder for your partner to give simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers, which can often bypass deeper truths. Avoid double-barreled questions that offer them an escape by choosing which part to answer.

        Ask like you already know

Instead of asking if they were unfaithful, frame your questions as though you have more information than you actually do.

For example, say, “You mentioned you were with John last night, but I heard that wasn’t true. What happened?” This strategy can prompt them to disclose more than they intend.

        Be calm and patient

If the truth does not immediately come to light, remain calm and patient. Pressing too hard can make your partner withdraw further and complicate the situation. Often, inconsistencies or slips will emerge naturally if there is dishonesty.

By employing these strategies, you can approach your concerns thoughtfully and respectfully, potentially leading to more open and honest communication with your partner.

      8. 7 possible reasons why you experience dizziness upon sudden standing

7 possible reasons why you experience dizziness upon sudden standing

Pay closer attention to your body’s signals and seek medical assistance when needed.

We’ve all encountered it – that moment when you stand up too swiftly, and the surroundings appear to spin. Suddenly, you’re hit with a sensation of dizziness, lightheadedness, and perhaps a touch of instability.

While it may catch you off guard, feeling dizzy upon standing is a relatively common occurrence.

        What causes this?

Dizziness, also referred to as postural hypotension or orthostatic hypotension, occurs when there is a sudden drop in blood pressure as you transition from a seated or lying position to standing.

While lying down or seated, blood is evenly distributed throughout your body. However, upon standing, gravity pulls blood towards your legs. Ordinarily, your body compensates for this change by constricting blood vessels and increasing heart rate to ensure consistent blood flow to the brain.

Occasionally, this adjustment may not occur swiftly enough, resulting in a temporary decline in blood pressure. This diminished blood flow to the brain is responsible for the sensation of dizziness.

7 reasons why you might feel dizzy when standing up

Several factors can contribute to dizziness when standing up. Here are some of the most common:

Dehydration: Not drinking enough fluids can decrease your blood volume, making it harder for your body to maintain blood pressure when you stand up.

Certain medications: Medications like blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and diuretics can sometimes cause dizziness as a side effect. If you’re concerned about a medication, talk to your doctor.

Blood sugar fluctuations: If you have diabetes or experience blood sugar swings, sudden drops in blood sugar can also contribute to dizziness.

Anemia: Anemia is a condition where your red blood cell count is lower than normal. This can lead to dizziness because red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body, including to your brain.

Heart conditions: Certain heart conditions can affect your heart’s ability to pump blood effectively, potentially leading to dizziness.

Dehydration after exercise: Sweating during exercise can deplete your body fluids. Not rehydrating properly after a workout can lead to dizziness when standing up.

Hot weather: Hot weather can cause blood vessels to dilate, which can lower blood pressure and contribute to dizziness.

This list is not exhaustive. If you experience frequent or severe dizziness, it’s important to consult your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Tips for managing dizziness when standing up

Here are some strategies you can try to reduce the feeling of dizziness when standing up:

Rise slowly: Take a moment to gather yourself before standing up from a sitting or lying position. Slowly rise to a sitting position first, then pause for a few seconds before standing fully upright.

Hydrate consistently: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to stay well-hydrated. Aim for eight glasses of water daily, adjusting based on your activity level and climate.

Eat regular meals: Eating regular meals and snacks can help maintain stable blood sugar levels, which might lessen dizziness.

Avoid hot and crowded places: Hot weather and crowded environments can worsen dizziness. If possible, seek out cool, air-conditioned spaces when feeling lightheaded.

Compression stockings: Compression stockings can help improve blood circulation in your legs and may reduce dizziness upon standing.

        When to seek medical attention

While occasional dizziness when standing up is common, certain situations warrant a visit to your doctor. Here are some red flags:

Frequent or severe dizziness: If you experience frequent or severe dizziness that disrupts your daily activities, seek medical advice.

Falls or fainting: If dizziness leads to falls or fainting episodes, consult your doctor to rule out any underlying conditions.

Chest pain or difficulty breathing: These symptoms can be signs of a more serious issue and require immediate medical attention.

“Credit management needs a digital system to operate” – Economist

An Economist and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Stanbic Bank, suggests the government should embrace effective digital systems for managing credit in Ghana.

Andani urges the government to establish robust technological infrastructure to streamline loan acquisitions and implement monitoring mechanisms to ensure efficient fund utilization.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency during the launch of the 10th anniversary of the Chartered Institute of Credit Management (CICMG) in Accra, Andani highlights the importance of these measures in addressing the recurring debt crisis.

He emphasizes the need for accountability from the government and advises against excessive expectations from citizens to avoid undue pressure for debt accumulation.

Additionally, Andani cautions political leaders against making overly ambitious promises at various levels of governance, which may lead to unsustainable spending beyond budgetary limits.

Currently serving as the Executive Chairman of LVSAfrica, an integrated business advisory and enterprise development firm, Andani expresses concern over Ghana’s recurring debt crisis.

Ghana’s debt is now “unsustainable”, with the government implementing a US$3 billion loan-support programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to overturn the situation and reach 55 per cent debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 55 per cent by 2028.

“Our current debt situation leaves so much to be desired; I’ve been in finance for a very long time, but we’ve not seen this level of despair within our credit system, and the impact on financial services,” Mr Andani said.

With over two decades of experience in banking, particularly in credit management, the former banker identified the recurrent debt crises in Ghana as stemming from governments’ failure to appoint individuals who could effectively utilize borrowed funds.

He proposed the adoption of digital technologies to allocate loans to the most efficient users and to implement thorough monitoring to ensure optimal returns in the country’s productive sectors, thereby facilitating timely repayment.

He emphasized the centrality of credit in financial services, as it typically serves as the conduit for acquiring sufficient funds from investors, investing these funds for profit, and subsequently repaying the loan.

“Financial service providers gather resources from surplus owners who want them for safe keeping and access it anytime they want and also make it available to those who want to use it create asset and develop enterprises,” he said.

“It’s for all the operators; the government, citizenry, financial service providers, and regulators to rethink our role and manage expectations, and rearrange the payment, which is what’s been done, and be able to pay back,” he advised.

During the event, Dr. Anthony Aubynn, Chairman of CICMG, encouraged credit management professionals to persist as catalysts for change, advocating for policies that foster responsible lending practices and promote financial inclusion.

Dr Aubynn said it was important to “embrace innovative technologies, such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics to streamline processes, mitigate risks, and extend financial services to underserved communities.”

Safeguard your SSNIT deductions – Organized labor told

In response to a report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) warning that Ghana’s Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) could deplete its funds by 2036, labor expert Austin Gamey has called on organized labor to safeguard employer deductions to SSNIT.

Gamey pointed out that the pension scheme has been marred by corruption and government intervention.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight programme on Thursday, April 25, 2024, Austin Gamey said, “The whole scheme has been bedevilled by corruption and government interference…The government must not manage the scheme. Organised labour must protect the deductions by employers”.

He emphasized the necessity of managing SSNIT without government intervention and advocated for oversight of fund managers to ensure proper accountability for entrusted funds.

As of the end of December 2021, the government’s debt to SSNIT amounted to GH¢9.35 billion, with late payments comprising GH¢6.9 billion of this total.

The government’s delayed payments have also resulted in a 1.3 percent reduction in SSNIT’s investment returns.

According to the ILO report, the government’s failure to make timely payments has effectively shifted a substantial financial burden onto the private sector.

“Past experience suggests that, by not paying on time and not paying the interest income on delayed contributions, the government shifts an important part of the cost to the private sector,” the report said.

The ILO forecasted that SSNIT would exhaust its funds in fulfilling its financial obligations to beneficiaries in the future.

      11. Ghanaian SMEs encouraged to collaborate in reducing trading costs under AfCFTA

Ghanaian SMEs encouraged to collaborate in reducing trading costs under AfCFTA

Appiah Kusi Adomako, the West African Regional Director of CUTS International, has emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnerships among Ghanaian SMEs to alleviate the expenses associated with exporting and trading within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Addressing a Public-Private Dialogue organized by CUTS International Accra, with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), under the theme “Making logistics work for Ghanaian SMEs to trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area,” Adomako highlighted the logistical hurdles faced by Ghanaian SMEs in trading. These challenges encompass high freight costs, poor road conditions, and the absence of rail infrastructure across the continent.

This, according to him, makes it almost impossible for SMEs to trade under the AfCFTA. “SMEs who deal in the same goods should consider coming together, so they can save cost of production and export under the AfCFTA” he added.

He further reiterated the importance of stakeholder collaboration to address the issue of trade logistics. “AfCFTA will not become successful if we do not address the issue of trade logistics, but this is something that the Government alone cannot do; it involves the private sector too. We need to decolonize trade logistics and Africans must own and operate shipping lines that can facilitate trade. Governments must provide the enabling framework to allow for the organic growth trade infrastructures, ” he said.

He, however, noted that, “it is when the Government creates the enabling framework, the private sector will be able to take advantage of it.”

Dr. Fareed Arthur, the National Coordinator for Ghana’s AfCFTA Coordination Office, disclosed during his remarks that a 2023 report from the African Development Bank revealed that approximately 53 percent of roads on the continent were paved, yet they handled 80 percent of goods and 90 percent of passenger traffic. Additionally, many of the railways, established during the colonial era, have not been adequately maintained and were not designed to support intra-African trade in goods.

He also highlighted that the AfDB report indicated that only 13 African countries had direct flights to approximately 20 neighboring countries, with approximately five percent of the passenger and cargo aircraft from the 230 airlines operating in Africa. Mr. Adomako urged African governments to expedite the process of connecting road networks, ensuring favorable shipping conditions, and establishing carriers to facilitate the movement of people and goods.

Dr. Stephen Amoah, a Deputy Finance Minister, expressed the government’s commitment to collaborating with value chain stakeholders to address logistical challenges in the country, with the aim of enhancing intra-African trade. He emphasized that such collaboration was crucial for enabling Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to thrive and increase their participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Furthermore, Dr. Amoah emphasized the importance of investing heavily in logistics infrastructure to facilitate seamless trade with neighboring African countries. He called on all stakeholders to unite their efforts and resources to develop an efficient and effective logistics system that would support sustainable business growth.

Dr. Amoah noted that while trade facilitation between two countries elsewhere was often smooth, the situation was different among many African countries. He emphasized the necessity for all stakeholders to join forces to prioritize the development of logistical infrastructure in Ghana.

Ms. Sofia Kamarudeen, the Ghana Component Lead for the GIZ Programme Support to the AfCFTA, explained that the purpose of the dialogue was to delve deeper into logistics issues and provide strong recommendations to the government to address the challenges.

“We’re committed to this topic, which is a long-term ambitious project for Africa. We will continue to support institutions to create more platforms, which will further boost the logistics sector and the progress made towards that,” she said.

“While MBA Professors were failing me, I was over $40m rich” – McDan

Ghanaian business tycoon Daniel McKorley, commonly referred to as McDan, shares insights into his academic challenges despite early career success.

Reflecting on his time pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, McDan discloses facing academic hurdles despite possessing substantial wealth.

With over $40 million in his account, he recounts the disparity between his financial achievements and academic struggles.

“I made my first million dollars at the age of 28 and lost it all at the age of 32. And I remember when I was doing my MBA and… doing my MBA, one of the most difficult parts in life.

“You would run to the class and a professor would look at me and give me D and Fs meanwhile I had 40 million dollars sitting in my account. Can you imagine, can you do that? That is very difficult but we call that discipline,” he stated.

Even with his financial achievements, McDan emphasizes the importance of striving for academic accomplishments.

“It is not because of money but you have to get somewhere. You know I always say that when you are young work hard. You reach a certain stage of your life, you work smart. You get to a certain stage your money has to work for you.

“So, when you are at a point and you are still working for money then you have a problem, your money has to work for you,” McDan added.

We lose $85m to shipping lines every year – Abossey Okai Spare Parts dealers lament expensive duty rates

Abossey Okai Spare Parts dealers have shared their reason for rejecting Bawumia’s Flat rate policy purported to alleviate high duty rates on imported goods into the country.

Incumbent Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to introduce a straightforward, citizen, and business-friendly flat tax system upon assuming power.

However, according to the Spare Parts dealers, the proposed flat rate regime would not serve the best interest of importers.

Head of Communications for the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, Takyi Addo, expressed this sentiment during an interview with Morning Show Host Daakyehene Ofosu Agyemang on New York-based Adinkra Radio.

“Vice President Bawumia invited us the leadership to the Jubilee House and we made him aware of our concerns about high duty rate on items we import. We suggested that he should make duty fixed rate. With this one, the rate is constant. When you import items you don’t have any problem with exchange rate, you have no problem with a customs officer, you pay for the items and then you clear them. But Veep Bawumia says he will introduce Flat rate and we don’t want that. With the Flat rate, it is based on percentage.”

“Mahama has promised to introduce fixed rate, if this is implemented one problem traders face at the Port which is demurrage will be solved. Every year, the amount of money we lose to shipping lines through demurrage is about $85million. This is due to negligence of a government. Alan Kyerematen, a trade expert has also promised to introduce fixed rate for us when he’s elected President and that will greatly help us traders. The more importers bring in items, the more money the government makes. A fixed-rate regime is the way to go, that is what importers want.”

Diana Asamoah exposes Junior Pastor for stealing GHC4k from her Momo wallet

Ghanaian gospel artist Diana Asamoah has leveled accusations against her junior pastor, Rev. Eric Kwame Asante, alleging that he stole Gh4000.00 from her Mobile Money wallet.

According to the gospel singer, the incident occurred while the victim was monitoring her transactions, during which the accused purportedly captured her pin code.

Subsequently, he allegedly withdrew GHS4,000.00 from her account without her knowledge.

However, she claims to have been aided by the Holy Spirit in exposing him.

Diana Asamoah went on a live session on TikTok to affirm the situation as its already circulating on social media.

“Greetings to all Ghanaians, I trust you are well. You may have come across a circulating video on my status and TikTok regarding my own Pastor, Rev. Eric Kwame Asante. I often translate his sermons from English to Twi, as he is my Bible reader and is known for speaking in tongues fervently. In my absence, he frequently assumes my role. This is not the first or second time he is misbehaving. However, he typically humbles himself and seeks forgiveness, and I forgive him.

“I am sharing this to caution you all about individuals who come into your life claiming to be men of God. With the assistance of the Holy Spirit and Dr. Digital (referring to Bawumia), it is now impossible to evade detection, no matter how far one goes to commit theft. The individual in question claimed to have seen my pin code or password while I was conducting transactions and proceeded to withdraw GHC4,000.00, allegedly intending to spend it on women. However, the Holy Spirit, who reveals all things, exposed his actions to me.”

“It is important to note that the individual involved is a respected man of God who leads prayer meetings and other activities. I share this not to discredit men of God, as I hold them in high regard, but to emphasize the need for vigilance. Despite his recent claim to have left the CAC church, after numerous conversations, he remains unyielding.”

“Just when I went about to sleep in the night, the Holy Spirit exposed him to me.”

Abossey Okai Spare Parts dealers are expressing their disagreement with the proposed flat rate system that would be introduced by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), should he win the presidential election.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, currently serving as the Vice President, has pledged to implement a straightforward flat tax regime that is favorable for both citizens and businesses once he assumes office.

During his address at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Wednesday, February 7, Bawumia stated that his administration would grant tax amnesty to individuals and businesses for a specified period, aiming to simplify the tax system and foster economic growth.

“My administration will introduce a very simple, citizen and business-friendly flat tax regime. A flat tax of a % of income for individuals and SMEs (which constitute 98% of all businesses in Ghana) with appropriate exemption thresholds set to protect the poor.”

“With the new tax regime, the tax return should be able to be completed in minutes! We will also simplify our complicated corporate tax system and VAT regime,” he said.

      18. Provide funding to fix challenges in Energy sector – IES to Finance Ministry

Provide funding to fix challenges in Energy sector – IES to Finance Ministry

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has urged the Energy and Finance Ministries to promptly allocate funds to address the current energy sector difficulties.

IES highlighted that the sector’s current issues stem mainly from inadequate liquidity for purchasing fuel to power certain plants at full capacity.

They stressed the urgency for the two Ministries to resolve this issue.

Additionally, IES reiterated the importance of equipping ECG with resources to reduce technical and commercial losses, deploy more smart meters to detect theft, and improve distribution efficiency to increase revenue.

These measures, they emphasized, are crucial for ECG to fulfill its mission of providing quality, reliable, and safe electricity services to support Ghana’s economic growth and development.

IES’s recommendation follows recent sanctions imposed by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for regulatory violations. Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of IES, emphasized to the Ghana News Agency that liquidity challenges have hindered scheduled maintenance of some plants, resulting in outages.

“We expect the Ministry of Energy to coordinate and work with the Ministry of Finance to find alternative funding sources to deal with the challenge, thus, to procure fuel to get some of the power plants online,” Nana Amoasi VII said.

Regarding the regulatory sanctions, he explained that PURC’s action was essential to signal to other service providers the regulator’s preparedness to penalize any violators of sector regulations.

“The current action is consistent with the oversight responsibility that PURC must have over the industry,” he said and encouraged ECG to oblige with the orders of the Regulator.

Nana Amoasi also called on the Regulator to impose further sanctions on ECG if it fails to meet the April 22 payment deadline to PURC and the April 30 payment deadline to cash waterfall mechanism beneficiaries.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission instructed ECG’s Management and Board to settle GHS446,283,706.29 by April 30, 2024, to ‘Category B’ beneficiaries of the cash waterfall mechanism. This directive follows ECG’s failure to pay shortfalls from August 2023 to February 2024 to beneficiaries by March 25, 2024.

Additionally, PURC imposed an initial regulatory charge of 3,000 penalty units totaling GHS36,000 on ECG for not submitting details of all bank accounts to the Commission. This charge is due by April 22, 2024.

According to Mr. Ishmael Edjekumhene, a PURC Commissioner, the commission has not received any updates on ECG’s actions regarding payment or negotiations on the sanctions.

Last month, Mr. Sam Dubik Mahama, Managing Director of ECG, emphasized the importance of consumers promptly settling their bills to boost revenue and improve the company’s operational efficiency.

Meanwhile, the Energy Commission’s 2024 Energy Outlook for Ghana emphasizes the necessity for significant investments in the energy and electricity sub-sector. Specifically, there is a need for improved reliability in gas supply due to the increasing reliance on natural gas for power generation.

Govt orders FGR to revamp mining operations swiftly

In response to a protest organized by the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) of the TUC-Ghana at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on April 25, the government has instructed Future Global Resources Limited (FGR) to swiftly revamp its mining operations.

Abdul-Moomin Gbana, the General Secretary of the union, clarified in a statement released on April 14, 2024, that the protest aimed to prompt the government to revoke the mining lease of Future Global Resources Limited, the operators of the Bogoso-Prestea Mines.

The union contends that since assuming control of the mine in 2020, Future Global Resources has not demonstrated adequate financial capability to manage it effectively. Despite a recommendation from the Minerals Commission to the Minister of Lands & Natural Resources to revoke the license, no action has been taken thus far.

During the picketing at the Lands Ministry, Lands Minister Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, representing the government, acknowledged the union’s concerns and directed FGR to address them without delay.

Mr. Jinapor assured the aggrieved workers of the government’s commitment to enhancing their welfare.

The government’s directive to FGR was prompted by the pressure exerted by the GMWU, underscoring the impact of collective action in addressing labor issues.

The union’s persistent advocacy for its members’ rights led to prompt government intervention, underscoring the importance of organized labor in the country’s governance.

In response to the government’s directive, Future Global Resources Limited is expected to take immediate action to address the concerns raised by the GMWU.

“The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, on Thursday, 25th April, 2024, engaged members of the Mine Workers Union who were picketing at the Ministry and assured them of Government’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to revamp the Prestea and Bogoso mines, and secure the welfare of its workers,” an excerpt of the statement said.

“I don’t need to apologize for doing my security work” – Ashanti Regional Minister on ECG Manager’s arrest

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has refused to apologize for the apprehension of the Ashanti Regional Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He justified his actions by asserting that he had instructed the Police to detain Mark Wiafe Asomani, the ECG’s Ashanti East Manager, due to security concerns.

During a press briefing in Kumasi on Thursday, the Minister disclosed the existence of agreements between the ECG and the Kumasi Technical University to settle the University’s outstanding debts.

Mr. Osei-Mensah assured journalists that he was simply fulfilling his duties and had not engaged in any misconduct.

“Do I have to apologise for doing my security work? What I want to tell you is that I asked the police to invite Ing Mark Asomani Wiafe on security grounds because of the happenings in the electricity sector in the region and the fact that a task force can always come from outside to disconnect without the proper information.

“What is ironic is that they tell me that they are not under me and for that matter, I cannot tell them what to do but they want to tell me how to execute my security responsibilities as enshrined in the Securities and Intelligence Act of 2020, Act 10(30).”

The Minister also rejected allegations that certain ECG managers are part of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

Prof Naana Jane repeated same points made by NDC in 2009 – Dennis Aboagye

Communications director for the Bawumian Campaign Team, Dennis “Miracles” Aboagye, minimized remarks made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, during her official introduction on Wednesday (24 April).

Opoku-Agyemang cautioned about repercussions for corrupt current government appointees should the NDC secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

However, Aboagye, speaking on Asaase Radio’s 12 o’clock report on Thursday (25 April), characterized her remarks as “not surprising.”

“All the things the professor said on the podium are things that they’ve repeated severally; in fact, they are not different from the things they said when they were coming to power in the year 2009 and they were in power for eight years and not a single of the things that she rattled about yesterday (24 April) were they able to do.”

Aboagye also highlighted purported corruption within the NDC’s leadership, citing former president and current NDC flagbearer John Mahama’s implication in a corruption controversy concerning the acquisition of aircraft for the nation.

“Standing on the podium and screaming greedy and screaming corruption, I don’t think she should have screamed it; I think she should have simply lowered her voice and looked straight into the eyes of the people who were seated in the front row and she was speaking to; on that front row was the former president, who was the former vice-president and brought global shame to this country as a result of corruption-related activity.”

“You heard their own attorney general, Martin Amidu, indicate that whilst the former president was vice-president, then president Mills commissioned an investigation into activities that the former president did in the purchase of some aeroplanes for the country.”

Okuapehene denounces Kwesi Addo as Amamprobihene for 2 years

Okuapehene Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III has officially rejected Kwesi Addo’s claim to the title of Amamprobihene.

This decision comes after it was discovered that Kwesi Addo had been portraying himself as Amamprobihene for more than two years.

In a video shared online, Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III explained that numerous attempts were made to communicate with Kwesi Addo, including delegations and summons, but he persistently ignored the authority of the Okuapehene.

The video, posted by the Okuapehene palace, depicted Oseadeeyo Addo Dankwa III visibly upset as he addressed the gathered audience, reaffirming his jurisdiction over the Amamprobi area.

During the 5th Awukudae observation, the Okuapehene stated, “Earlier, when the linguist was speaking, he mentioned some issues with regard to Amamprobi. Anything that has to do with Amamprobi is my business. Our ancestors established that place. My blood runs through that town as well. Everyone gathered here, including visitors, and even those fighting us, know the history behind Amamprobi.

“So, why is someone parading himself as the Amamprobihene or whatever he calls himself? When I ascended this throne, there was nothing like an Amamprobihene or even an Odikro from from that place.”

He vented his frustration, alleging Kwesi Addo’s involvement in deforestation.

“I have been reliably informed that he has been felling trees (deforestation), engaging in all sorts of nuisance. If he truly works with me, he would have honoured my summons.

“But as the Okuapehene, I have the absolute powers over that land. Therefore, I won’t allow that so-called Amamprobihene to disrespect me,” the Okuapehene stated.

Internet shutdowns violates human right – CSOs

A group of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has vehemently denounced internet shutdowns, stating that they represent a serious infringement of basic human rights.

Felicia Anthonio, Manager of the KeepItOn Campaign, has emphasized that the CSOs are urging governments to refrain from implementing internet shutdowns under any circumstances.

“Internet shutdowns violate fundamental human rights, and governments have the duty to protect these rights. The media needs to re-echo these calls that we are making,” the media quoted Felicia Anthonio to have said.

She emphasized the common pretext utilized by governments during election seasons, urging them to abstain from justifying actions under the guise of national security. Instead, she advocated for prioritizing efforts to expand internet access, thereby fostering enriched national discourse.

“A lot of governments would shut down the internet during election periods with excuses that it is for national security reasons. But we need them to stop using that as an excuse and rather look at increasing access to improve national discourse,” she added.

The CSOs stressed the internet’s crucial role as a platform for communication, information access, and expression, especially during pivotal events like elections. Thus, any effort to disrupt internet access violates individuals’ rights to freedom of expression and information.

Governments worldwide have increasingly resorted to internet shutdowns as a means to quell dissent, regulate information dissemination, and retain authority.

During election years, 24 countries have imposed internet shutdowns, impeding the full enjoyment of various fundamental rights and freedoms.

      25. ILO predicts SSNIT reserves to be depleted in 12 years

ILO predicts SSNIT reserves to be depleted in 12 years

The International Labour Organization (ILO) predicts that SSNIT’s reserve will be fully depleted by 2036, as per an actuarial valuation study on the trust’s sustainability.

ILO further states that the total income, which comprises contributions, investment income, and other revenue, will no longer cover annual expenses, including pension payments to retirees, by 2029.

“Starting in 2029, total income (contributions, investment income and other income) is no longer sufficient to pay for annual expenditures.

“The reserve starts to decrease. During the year 2036, the reserve drops to zero” the research emphasised.

SSNIT’s sole means of meeting payment demands is relying on its reserves, initiating the depletion process. This trend is expected to persist until 2036, as indicated in the valuation report, when the reserves are projected to reach zero.

The reserve ratio, calculated as the end-of-year reserve over the annual expenditures, declines from 3.4 in 2021 to 0 by 2036. Consequently, the scheme will be unable to pay pension benefits in the absence of contributions, investment income, or other revenue streams.

The delay in government payments emerges as the primary factor driving this scenario, as highlighted in the valuation report. Of the total indebtedness to SSNIT, amounting to GH¢9.35 billion as of December 31, 2021, 73.7% (equivalent to GH¢6.9 billion) is attributable to late contributions by the government.

The report underscores that this results in a 1.3% decrease in the expected returns on SSNIT’s investments.

According to the study, “Past experience suggests that, by not paying on time and not paying the interest income on delayed contributions, the Government shifts an important part of the cost to the private sector”.
