A prominent player in the agricultural sector, Agri-Impact, has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to tap into the university’s expertise and its E-Learning infrastructure.

This partnership aims to revolutionize the agricultural sector under the Harnessing Agricultural Productivity and Prosperity for Youth (HAPPY) program.

Led by Agri-Impact and involving nine collaborators, the HAPPY initiative spans four years and aims to leverage technology and innovation to empower young individuals across the agricultural value chain. Supported by the MasterCard Foundation, its main goal is to create dignified job opportunities for 326,000 young people, with a special focus on empowering women and individuals with disabilities.

The program targets four primary value chains: rice, soya, poultry, and tomatoes. By leveraging industry expertise in each value chain, the initiative aims to enhance production, productivity, value addition, market access, enterprise development, and address policy issues related to youth participation in agriculture.

Over the project’s duration, the program aims to boost production in these value chains by 180,000 metric tonnes annually and generate US$200 million in revenue, while reducing imports by 10 percent.

During the event, Agri-Impact’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Dan Aquaye, underscored the transformative potential of ICT in agriculture, emphasizing its role in providing real-time information and data for informed decision-making by farmers.

Agri-Impact’s Deputy Group CEO, Julie Asante-Dartey, highlighted that the initiative would equip farmers with the necessary knowledge and resources to effectively embrace ICT in agriculture, enhancing profitability and competitiveness within the value chain.

Professor Ben Banful, Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at KNUST, reiterated the university’s commitment to the program’s success, pledging to collaborate diligently with all stakeholders to ensure its triumph.

Ugandan authorities lift ban on meat sales amid foot-and-mouth disease outbreak

Ugandan authorities have reportedly lifted the recent prohibition on meat sales in the capital city, Kampala, amidst an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

Last week, health officials had implemented the ban and mandated the closure of all slaughterhouses to contain the spread of the outbreak.

However, Minister for Kampala City and Metropolitan Affairs, Minsa Kabanda, informed the Daily Monitor newspaper on Sunday that the ban had been suspended while the government evaluates the disease’s impact in the capital.

Despite this, Ms. Kabanda emphasized the importance of ensuring animals are tested before slaughter.

Traders had opposed the ban, criticizing the government for its failure to prevent the disease from spreading.

Local media reports indicate foot-and-mouth disease has been detected in 40 districts across the country.

South African opposition faces backlash for inviting US to monitor election

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has condemned the Democratic Alliance (DA), the country’s primary opposition party, for its call to the United States and European nations to oversee the forthcoming elections.

The DA forwarded this appeal in a letter dispatched last week to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and several European foreign affairs ministers.

“The DA’s letter to the United States government is quite disingenuous and it is almost trying to sell our country to other powers in the world,” President Ramaphosa was quoted as saying by state broadcaster SABC.

“And we have regional organisations in the world like Sadc, AU and have the UN as well. They always come to monitor our elections and now for a non-state entity to sell our democracy.”

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) party also slammed DA for the letter on Saturday, accusing the opposition party of offering “South Africa’s sovereignty on a silver platter”.

South Africa’s elections are planned for 29 May.

Polls by research firms suggest that ANC’s share of the vote could fall below 50% for the first time since it came to power in 1994, fuelled by widespread dissatisfaction with the state of the economy, public services and c

Kenyan man faces arrest for alleged unauthorized legal practice

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) bar association reports that an arrest warrant has been issued for a Kenyan man accused of practicing law without proper qualifications, following his failure to appear in court.

The case has garnered attention from Kenyans since the man was exposed as an unlicensed lawyer last October, sparking a range of reactions from outrage to support and amusement.

At that time, legal authorities in Kenya called on the police to apprehend the individual, who had been practicing law using the alias “Brian Mwenda”.

They alleged that he was an impostor who had assumed the identity of a genuine lawyer named Brian Mwenda Ntwiga.

Subsequently, he surrendered himself to the police.

He was subsequently charged with six offenses, including forgery and identity theft, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Idris Elba leads smart city project to challenge stereotypes in Sierra Leone

Actor Idris Elba, spearheading the development of a smart city in Sierra Leone, states that his motivation for the project is to challenge the stereotypical image of Africa.

Elba, in collaboration with Siaka Stevens, the grandson of Sierra Leone’s former president, shares plans to construct the eco-city on rural Sherbro Island, situated off the West African coast.

Partnering with renewable energy firm Octopus Energy Generation, the initiative aims to establish a sustainable energy source for residents through wind and solar farms.

This endeavor is particularly significant as currently, fewer than one-third of households in Sierra Leone have access to electricity.

“Are we ever gonna make a profit? I don’t think so, but it is about being self-reliant, it’s about bringing an economy that feeds itself, that has growth potential,” Elba told the BBC Newsday programme.

“I’m very keen to sort of reframe the way Africa is viewed. We often view the framing of Africa as an aid model and this opportunity is completely different,” he added.

Elba informed Newsday that the city aims to draw businesses and innovation, as well as cater to tourists and uplift local communities.

Additionally, the actor intends to establish a film studio and a retirement home for his mother within the city.

Elba’s mother hails from Ghana but relocated to the UK, while his late father was of Sierra Leonean descent.

24-hour economy is great but unfavorable for current economy – KSM

Ace Satirist, Kwaku Sintim-Misa also known as KSM, has emphasized that for a 24-hour economy to be feasible, former President John Dramani Mahama must first ensure economic stability.

During an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat, he emphasized that Ghana’s current economic conditions are not conducive to sustain a 24-hour economy.

“I think the idea of a 24-hour economy is great and good to know that around the clock we are working and the economy will be moving. But my advice to Mahama is to understand that a 24-hour economy is possible and recommended when the economy is running.

“There is an economy that is booming, but where we are now, we are going in reverse. You must stop the reverse, make it stable, and fix everything that you need to fix then let’s start moving forward. Then in our movement forward you fix in the 24-hour economy and other thing that you want to do,” Mr. Sintim indicated.

He stated that in order to achieve a more effective 24-hour economy, Mr. Mahama must prioritize stabilizing the current struggling economy before taking further steps.

“You have to set the economy on a firm footing, the economy is now like a free fall. I am not making these statements as a politician, I am making these statements as a concerned citizen of Ghana, KSM who is seeing things. I lived it and I know and saying that we need to stop the free fall,” KSM stated.

LGBTQ+ activities can bring the world to an end – Ola Michael

Entertainment commentator, Ola Michael, has clarified that the actions of LGBTQ+ people have the potential to end the world.

During a recent conversation about the parliamentary endorsement of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill on United Showbiz with MizGee, he brought up analogies of similar activities in the Bible that caused the distraction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

According to the Bible, Sodom and Gomorrah was a nation destroyed due to the widespread wickedness and depravity of their inhabitants.

The cities were known for their rampant sinfulness, including, homosexuality, violence, and disregard for the laws of God.

God decided to punish these cities for their evil ways, and ultimately, they were destroyed by fire and brimstone as a divine judgment.

Thus, his assertion that LGBTQ activities may play a major role in bringing the world to an end.

“God observed that the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah were inhabited by people engaging in the behavior we’re discussing. His anger was evident when he discussed it with Abraham, indicating his displeasure with the act. He reluctantly considered destroying them by fire, fearing that if left unchecked, the behavior would spread to others. The wrongdoing involved men desiring relations with other men and women seeking intimacy with other women, driven by feelings of suppression and desire for autonomy. If the world will come to an end. This is what will bring it to an end,” Ola Micheal explained.

Parliament approved an Anti-LGBTQ+ bill aiming to outlaw the actions of homosexuals.

Yet, President Akufo-Addo has not yet approved the bill, delaying its enactment.

This has sparked various discussions and debates among the public.

While some Ghanaians eagerly await the president’s endorsement of the bill, others argue that the penalties outlined in it are cruel and warrant reconsideration.

Wife reveals John Kumah’s motto during ‘cancer’ battle – Lilian Kumah

The widow of the late Dr. John Kumah, who served as the deputy finance minister and was a member of Parliament for the Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti Region under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has unequivocally refuted claims suggesting her husband’s demise was due to food poisoning.

In an exclusive interview with Wilberforce Asare from Asaase News, conducted at her residence in Chantan, a suburb in Accra, Apostle Lilian Kumah emphasized that her husband had been battling a severe illness for more than a year.

She clarified that this terminal disease was diagnosed by doctors in Germany and ultimately led to her husband’s passing on Thursday, March 7, 2024, ruling out any connection to food poisoning as circulated by sections of both mainstream and social media.

    Stop the speculation

Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, the General Overseer of Disciples of Christ Ministries, spoke with a somber and mournful tone as she urged those speculating about her husband’s cause of death to cease their conjectures.

She emphasized that such speculation only serves to deepen the pain of both her immediate family and the broader Kumah family.

Additionally, she called for prompt police intervention against individuals such as Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, who have publicly alleged that her late husband was poisoned without providing any evidence to support their claims.

She emphasized the importance of halting baseless accusations and urged for responsible behavior in such sensitive matters.

“Why is it that someone (referring to Captain Smart) has been this bold to claim that he knows for a fact that a person like John Kumah who has serviced his country virtually all his life, was poisoned, while he was working for his country and party (New Patriotic Party, NPP), why should we sit down and not bring that person to book.

“If it is true that a person who is not dead but alive claims that he knows how my husband (John Kumah) died and that he was poisoned, and that person is still moving around for the past three weeks, it hurts me, it saddens me and I do not know how best to express my frustrations about these false claims by Captain Smart,” the widow of John Kumah, Apostle Lilian Kumah said.

“If there are laws in this country concerning such false claims, I think this is the time for the leadership of the land to bring that wicked person (Captain Smart) to book to prove his false claims and to point out the persons who were involved in the poisoning of my late husband,” Mrs. Kumah further stated.

    The August diagnoses

Apostle Lilian Kumah disclosed the true cause of her husband’s death, revealing that John Kumah had been diagnosed with a blood-related illness during a medical examination in Germany in August 2023, where she accompanied him.

She emphasized that despite numerous medical check-ups both in Germany and Ghana, none of the doctors they consulted ever mentioned any concerns regarding poisoning in John Kumah’s blood vessels.

“My husband went through pain but he never showed that he was in pain. He went through all the pain to do everything he needed to do during the period of his ill-health.

“He was motivated by a particular motto that he always operated by which is, “We don’t do what is convenient, we do what we are commanded to do”. So [despite] all the pain, he endured,” Mrs. Kumah remarked.

“Right from day one since he was diagnosed in Germany, I have been part of the medical processes my husband went through, and no one, none of the doctors ever told me that my husband’s medical situation was because of poisoning.

“I have all the medical reports both from Germany and Ghana and food poisoning has never been mentioned in any of the reports,” the late John Kumah’s widow added.

    Last moments

Dr. John Kumah passed away around 12:40 PM at the Suhum government hospital. An ambulance transporting him, along with his wife and a medical doctor, from Ejisu to Accra was diverted to the Suhum medical facility when the doctor onboard noticed Mr. Kumah’s rapidly deteriorating condition.

Upon arrival at the hospital a little after 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 7, 2024, the medical team immediately worked to stabilize him in order to continue his journey to Accra, where he had planned to proceed to Germany for ongoing medical treatment.

However, despite the efforts of the medical staff at the Suhum government hospital, they were unable to save him.

    John Kumah’s profile

Dr. John Kumah, who sadly passed away, had a diverse professional background, having served as a lawyer in private practice and an accomplished entrepreneur for over 15 years. His leadership skills, creativity, innovation, and dedication to job creation and youth development were evident throughout his career.

As the inaugural CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Dr. Kumah played a pivotal role in establishing NEIP as a key player in Ghana’s entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Under his guidance, the program provided training to 7,000 startup staff members in 2018 through the Presidential Business Support Programme and extended financial support to 1,350 beneficiaries.

Prior to his government tenure, Dr. Kumah co-founded and managed Aduaprokye Chambers, a prominent law firm, and established Majak Associates Ltd, a successful building and construction company.

In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Kumah was conferred with a Doctorate in Business Innovation from the Swiss Business School in Switzerland in November 2020, following his completion of a Master’s degree in Applied Business Research from the same institution in 2019.

Tema Port processes 18m tonnes of Cargo in 2023

Despite facing challenging economic conditions locally and internationally in 2023, the Tema Port successfully managed 18 million tonnes of cargo, while the Takoradi Port handled eight million tonnes. This marked a significant improvement in performance during the latter half of the year following a slow start.

Mr. Michael Achagwe Luguje, the Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), noted that the Takoradi Port outperformed its previous year’s performance in 2023.

He credited this improvement in the second half of the year to collaborative initiatives between GPHA and its external partners, as well as broader economic factors.

One such initiative involved implementing a scheme to stabilize exchange rates charged on transit goods every three months to mitigate the impact of fluctuating rates and prevent increased costs.

In early 2023, the Authority engaged stakeholders from Ghana and shipping lines to identify factors contributing to the decline in import figures.

The findings were subsequently presented to Ghana’s economic management team.

Mr. Luguje expressed optimism that measures would be taken to address the escalating cost of doing business in Ghana’s seaports. He clarified that while GPHA is often blamed for high business costs, port charges account for only 10% of the total clearance expenses.

“A good chunk of it comes from duties and statutory taxes; the government’s attention has been drawn to it, and they are looking at it to see what can be done to reduce it,” he said.

“Apart from that, other operators like shipping lines and freight forwarders also contribute to it.”

He emphasized to the business community that the efficiency of port systems and infrastructure directly impacts the cost of doing business in the logistics sector.

This is why the GPHA is actively implementing measures to enhance port efficiency, aiming to position Ghana as the preferred hub in the sub-region.

  • Why is Captain Smart freely walking about with false claims about my husband’s death? – John Kumah’s wife quizzes

Apostle Mrs Lilian Kumah, wife of the late Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, is questioning why Captain Smart is making false claims about her husband’s death and hasn’t faced any consequences for doing so.

During a live TV programme, Captain Smart claimed that the Deputy Finance Minister, who died on Thursday, March 7, 2024, had been severely affected by food poisoning.

But the wife of the deceased has debunked poisoning rumors surrounding his husband’s death, clarifying that her late husband had been battling with a terminal disease for nearly a year now since it was discovered by his doctors in Germany.

According to her that is what her husband succumbed to on Thursday, 7 March 2024, and not food poisoning.

Thus she is upset and wishes the authorities will take legal actions against Captain Smart for wrongly fueling Ghanaians with poisoning rumors as cause of John Kumah’s death.

Ignore Nigel Gaisie, he was aware of my husband’s illness – Wife of John Kumah

The wife of the late Dr. John Kumah, Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, has stated that self-proclaimed prophet Nigel Gaisie was aware of John Kumah’s terminal illness before his prophesy on December 31, 2023, predicting the death of a Ghanaian deputy minister in 2024.

Mrs. Lilian Kumah revealed in an interview with Asaase News that Nigel Gaisie had access to detailed information about the health of the late deputy finance minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu constituency because of his close relationship with their family.

She further mentioned that her family chose to sever ties with Nigel Gaisie upon learning that he had used the information they provided him with to make predictions of doom during his watch night service on December 31.

“Nigel Gaisie was like a brother. He knows my late husband, lawyer John Kumah personally, one-on-one. We have sat in this house and eaten together several times. That is how far we go. When he came from abroad to start a church in Ghana, he came to my church, Disciples of Christ Ministries and I did a programme with him dubbed “Let the Prophet Speak”.

“We know him very well and have been aware since November 2023 that the late John Kumah was seriously sick. My husband had a lot of respect for men of Ghana in this country and that included Nigel Gaisie when my husband and I thought he was a genuine man of God,” Apostle Lilian Kumah stated.

“Nigel Gaisie knew very well that my husband was terminally ill as far back as August 2023 but regardless of that, he stood on his altar on 31st December 2023 to lie through his supposed prophesy that a Ghanaian deputy minister will die in the year 2024. What does he want to achieve through these fake prophesies?” John Kumah’s widow further stated.

It hurts me! it saddens me! – Wife of John Kumah reacts to poisoning allegations

Contrary to circulating reports, the widow of John Kumah, the late Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, has refuted claims that her husband died from food poisoning.

Apostle Lilian Kumah clarified in an interview with Asaase News that her husband bravely battled a severe illness for over a year. She revealed that the late John Kumah had been fighting a terminal disease since it was diagnosed by his doctors in Germany nearly a year ago.

This illness, she emphasized, was what ultimately led to his passing on Thursday, March 7, 2024, and not food poisoning as speculated.

    Stop the speculation

Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, who also serves as the General Overseer of Disciples of Christ Ministries, spoke with a tone of solemnity and grief as she urged those speculating about her husband’s cause of death to cease their conjectures. She expressed how such speculation only serves to deepen the anguish of her immediate family and the broader Kumah family.

Furthermore, she called for swift police intervention against individuals like Blessed Godsbrain Smart, widely known as Captain Smart, who publicly alleged that her late husband was poisoned without presenting any evidence to substantiate his claims.

“Why is it that someone (referring to Captain Smart) has been this bold to claim that he knows for a fact that a person like John Kumah who has served his country virtually all his life, was poisoned, while he was working for his country and party (New Patriotic Party, NPP), why should we sit down and not bring that person to book.

“If it is true that a person who is not dead but alive claims that he knows how my husband (John Kumah) died and that he was poisoned, and that person is still moving around for the past three weeks, it hurts me, it saddens me and I do not know how best to express my frustrations about these false claims by Captain Smart,” Apostle Lilian Kumah said.

In discussing the true circumstances surrounding her husband’s passing, Apostle Lilian Kumah revealed that John Kumah received a diagnosis of a blood-related illness in August 2023 during a medical examination in Germany, where she accompanied him.

Mrs. Kumah emphasized that during all the medical evaluations her husband underwent in both Germany and Ghana, none of the attending physicians ever mentioned the possibility of poisoning in his bloodstream.

“My husband went through pain but he never showed that he was in pain. He went through all the pain to do everything he needed to do during the period of his ill-health.

“He was motivated by a particular motto that he always operated by which is, ‘We don’t do what is convenient, we do what we are commanded to do.

Dr. John Kumah passed away at approximately 12:40 PM at the Suhum government hospital. He was being transported in an ambulance with his wife and a medical doctor from Ejisu to Accra when the journey was diverted to the Suhum medical facility due to Mr. Kumah’s rapidly deteriorating condition.

Upon arrival at the hospital, just after 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 7, 2024, the medical team attempted to stabilize him so he could resume his journey to Accra, where he was scheduled to continue on to Germany for ongoing treatment. Despite the efforts of the medical staff at the Suhum government hospital, they were unable to save him.

In 2023, banks in Ghana recorded a significant improvement in their bad debt situation, with GH¢4.33 billion being written off, marking a substantial 79.2% reduction compared to the previous year.

This bad debt, categorized as loan losses, depreciation, and other factors, contributed to a total estimated bad debt of GH¢20.8 billion for the year.

The Bank of Ghana reports that banks reported lower impairments on financial assets in 2023. Total provisions and impairments decreased by 79.2% in December 2023, following a sharp increase in December 2022 due to significant impairments on restructured bonds.

However, despite these improvements, asset quality risks remained elevated in December 2023, reflecting the lingering effects of the macroeconomic challenges faced in 2022 on the banking sector.

Although there was a moderation in the growth of non-performing loans (NPL), the industry’s NPL ratio rose to 20.7% in December 2023, up from 16.6% in December 2022. Similarly, the NPL ratio adjusted for fully provisioned loan loss category increased from 6.6% to 8.4% during the same period of comparison.

The NPL stock saw a notable increase of 37.4% to GH¢15.8 billion in December 2023.

Formerly leading the now-defunct Hiplife/Hip Hop group 4X4, Captain Planet is advocating for Ghanaians to explore opportunities abroad rather than returning to their homeland.

Expressing disillusionment with the country’s leadership, he asserts that Ghanaian authorities overlook the welfare of their citizens while amassing properties overseas.

In a candid post shared on X, Captain Planet urges Ghanaians to prioritize their well-being over notions of patriotism.

“If you’re fortunate enough to leave this country, please don’t come back. These leaders are only acquiring properties for their families & they don’t give a shit about you. Don’t die for this country in the name of being patriotic. Your future is not secured here. BE WISE,” he said.

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has opened up about her past relationship with fellow politician Kennedy Agyapong, revealing that their romantic bond was strained by political differences.

The lawyer, who shares two children with the Assin North Member of Parliament, described him as a ‘sweet father’ despite his public persona as a controversial figure.

During an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr FM, Hon. Adwoa Safo refuted claims of Hon. Agyepong being a violent person and dismissed allegations of abuse during their time together. She attributed the end of their relationship to conflicting aspirations and goals.

“You’ve gone into relationships and you realize things don’t work out, so its with everybody. I’just like anybody…you go into something and probably as time goes on you don’t see it the way you want it, probably you’d want to move on.

“Sometimes you need to share in your dreams, once we are both politicians we have very competing interests and competing goals and vision. At some point it might not be on the same level and you might want to push it on your own. Politics probably pushed us apart. Ghana needs a National Housing Fund to address challenges facing affordable housing programmes – Chairman of Comet Properties

Executive Chairman of Comet Properties, Nana Odeneho Kyeremateng, suggests the creation of a National Housing Fund to tackle the hurdles encountered by affordable housing programs in the nation, particularly concerning financing.

Kyeremateng posits that establishing such a fund would furnish the necessary initial capital for the government to lend to real estate firms.

These loans would enable them to embark on developments catering to workers with low incomes.

“It will also help the banks when it comes to the provision of mortgage for persons earning below some salary levels in the country”, he said.

Mr. Kyeremateng made these remarks on PM EXPRESS BUSINESS EDITION with host George Wiafe, emphasizing that all stakeholders must demonstrate commitment to offering decent housing to workers.

“We need to find a lasting solution to the housing challenge thing, otherwise we will be going, round and round the issue and not address anything”, he stressed.

He suggested that the private sector, not the government, should take the lead in providing affordable housing in Ghana.

    Financing National Housing Fund

Offering additional advice, he suggested that the government could explore utilizing revenue from rental taxes to fund the Ghana Housing Fund.

Nonetheless, he dismissed arguments suggesting that introducing new taxes might be a more viable approach for financing the proposed fund.

He reiterated that the proposed strategy could offer a more sustainable means of providing the necessary financial backing for the Ghana National Housing Fund.

Affordable Housing and Mortgage in Ghana

He disclosed that an aspiring homeowner might require approximately $40,000 to $50,000 to acquire a two-bedroom house in non-prime areas.

Regarding concerns about Ghana’s mortgage system, Nana Kyeremateng contended that commercial banks should not be faulted, as access to long-term financing poses a significant challenge for financial institutions in the country.

“That is why mortgage is very expensive and does not favour a lot of people with low incomes in the country”.

The Executive Chairman of Comet Properties, also rejected arguments that most of the properties provided by the real estate firms in Ghana are very expensive.

Flashback: Ghanaians will sell kids to survive if Mahama wins – Frimpong Boateng

Eight years ago, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) warned that if President John Dramani Mahama secures victory in the upcoming December 7 presidential election, Ghanaians will likely face severe hardships, possibly resorting to extreme measures like selling their children to survive.

He emphasized that the past four years under the Mahama administration have already brought considerable suffering to the populace.

As a result, he urged voters to choose Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP as an alternative, believing they are better equipped to alleviate the nation’s challenges.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen political programme on Thursday October 13, Prof Frimpong Boateng said: “They [NDC] should not have even attempted to contest in the elections because they have failed Ghanaians.

“Ghanaians will sell their children before eating if Mahama wins the elections. He (President Mahama) was not prepared for the presidency. He was sitting somewhere when he became the vice president and eventually became the president, so, he was not fully prepared for the presidency. That is why Ghanaians are suffering under him. There is the need for him to have been adequately prepared for the presidency.”

When his attention was drawn to the infrastructural projects undertaken by Mr Mahama and the NDC, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital said: “Infrastructural projects are good, the interchange is good but the value for money is what we are looking at. How much money have you [Government] spent on those projects? We will need to know whether we are getting value for money.”

Deputy Minister-designate for the Gender Ministry, Dr. Benjamin Sekyere Yeboah, has revealed that he faced mockery from fellow MPs when his nomination was announced.

During his vetting in Parliament in Accra on Friday, Dr. Yeboah disclosed that numerous colleagues questioned whether he was suitable as a male nominee for the Gender Ministry.

In a conversation with the Appointments Committee Chairman, Joseph Osei Owusu, Dr. Yeboah mentioned that it was only former Minister of Railways Development, Joe Ghartey, who encouraged him to seize the opportunity.

“Mr. Chairman, it may interest you to know that when the President appointed me to the Gender Ministry, many people asked me, ‘Are you a female?’

“I had to quickly research to find out if I was the only male to hold such a position, but I discovered that I may be the fourth person,” Dr Yeboah explained.

He continued, “It was only Honourable Joe Ghartey who encouraged me, saying, ‘Sekyere, you are fortunate. Your position is significant. You will rise.’

“He was the only one who supported me. Others mocked me, questioning why the President chose me for the Gender Ministry.”

Despite the obstacles and skepticism at first, Dr. Yeboah stated that he was determined to change the Gender Ministry and have a significant impact.

“But I believe that everything happens for a reason, and I am committed to working hard to ensure that gender issues are addressed comprehensively,” he concluded.

KATH sees an annual admission of over one thousand stroke patients

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital sees an annual admission of over one thousand stroke patients, a stark contrast to the mere 200 cases recorded four decades ago.

To enhance stroke treatment, the hospital has introduced a time-sensitive and minimally invasive treatment approach.

Ischemic strokes, caused by reduced blood flow due to a clot, are prevalent at the hospital.

However, effective treatment remains a challenge, prompting experts to explore modern treatment options.

Traditionally used drugs did not effectively dissolve blood clots, resulting in permanent disabilities for patients.

The introduction of active stroke thrombolysis aims to administer clot-busting drugs during acute ischemic strokes, dissolving blood clots in the brain.

This new service will integrate thrombolysis into routine stroke care at the hospital, revolutionizing treatment methods.

Consultant Neurologist at KATH, Dr. Fred Stephen Sarfo, hailed the implementation of thrombolysis services as a groundbreaking advancement.

Stroke has been noted as a top rampant medical condition being recorded in the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Active stroke thrombolysis will administer clot-busting drugs and medication to dissolve blood clots in the brain during an acute ischemic stroke.

Thrombolysis services will incorporate thrombolysis into routine stroke care at Komfo Anokye (KATH).

At the launch of the implementation of thrombolysis services, Consultant Neurologist at KATH, Dr. Fred Stephen Sarfo said the new method is revolutionary.

“That cloth is what the treatment [active Stroke thrombolysis] seeks to dissolve to restore blood flow to the brain, be able to talk again, and in essence, cure the stroke. Unlike in the past when there was not a proper cure for it. This is revolutionary and will change the stroke treatment landscape.

“This one almost cures the stroke so the person doesn’t have to deal with paralysis and disability. The approximate cost is about 15 thousand cedis for treatment to be given and highly standardized and subsided at the Komfo Anokye,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah, Chief Executive of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, explains that the hospital’s latest approach aims to enhance the provision of tertiary healthcare services.

“In line with the hospital’s new strategy to optimize the delivery of tertiary healthcare through innovation and research, management has supported the KATH Multidisciplinary Stroke Thrombolysis Team to commence the delivery of this special service to save stroke patients brought in time to this hospital from suffering the worst possible impact of the disease.

“I will therefore, enjoin all stakeholders especially the peripheral hospitals and indeed members of the general public to act with speed in getting stroke patients quickly admitted at KATH for this service,” he said.

The Ghana Health Service’s Deputy Regional Director of Clinic Care, Rita Larsen-Reindolf, is urging all parties involved to intensify stroke public education.

“Awareness can be championed by stakeholders. Ghana’s health service is ready to take up the challenge and support the new step of KATH. For the immediate terms, awareness and public education is what we can capitalize on,” she said.

Ugandan authorities ban meat sale in Kampala over foot-and-mouth disease outbreak

To combat an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease affecting animals, animal authorities in Uganda have reportedly prohibited the sale of meat in the capital city of Kampala.

In a letter cited by various local media outlets, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries stated, “Movement of cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and their products and by-products from, to, through and within Kampala Capital City Authority, Kampala District, is prohibited until further notice.”

The ministry also ordered the closure of livestock markets, slaughter places, butcheries, loading grounds, and animal shows across the entire district with immediate effect.

Although the letter is dated March 1, Kampala authorities received it on Thursday, as reported by the privately owned Daily Monitor newspaper.

A city official informed the newspaper that they would collaborate with other agencies to enforce the quarantine measures. However, despite the restrictions, local media sources indicate that butcheries in the city are still operational.

Foot-and-mouth disease is highly contagious and causes fever and painful blisters inside the mouth and under the hooves of affected animals. It can be particularly lethal for young animals.

When they went to bed that night, Mr. Kumah revealed, he was restless and had trouble falling asleep, but every time he went to see how his son was doing, he was soundly asleep.

“I didn’t understand what was happening but finally, day broke and we were going about our duties normally. We looked at me very quietly throughout the day and will smile.

“I asked what the problem was and he just told me it was nothing but from what I saw during those last moments, I’m convinced he knew where he was going and is happy,” he recounted amidst tears from mourners who had gathered at their residence in Ejisu.

The health of the MP was reported to have worsened, prompting the mobilization of an ambulance to transport him to Accra due to his inability to board a flight.

While en route to Accra on Thursday, his condition allegedly became critical, leading the ambulance to divert to the Suhum Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

His body has been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for further arrangements.

Senegal’s electoral commission confirms readiness for March 24 presidential election

Senegal’s national electoral commission says there’s no cause for alarm over its preparedness to conduct the presidential election on 24 March.

It’s been a joyful mood in Senegal as the government finally fixed a day for the delayed presidential election.

But there are concerns the electoral commission may not have enough time.

The commission has assured Senegalese that they have nothing to worry about, with an official telling the BBC that they are not under any pressure.

The official said electoral materials had already been sent to the regional offices and their teams mobilised before elections were postponed early last month.

The move to hold elections before 2 April, when the mandate of President Macky Sall comes to an end, ends the crisis that divided the country and led to protests for weeks.

Prior to Wednesday’s announcement, authorities had attempted to postpone the original 25 February poll to December, which resulted in the political crisis.

  • Teenage pregnancy common among adolescents aged 15-19 in Ghana

Teenage pregnancy common among adolescents aged 15-19 in Ghana

Aproximately 15.2% of female adolescents aged 15-19 in Ghana have experienced pregnancy, highlighting the prevalence of teenage motherhood in the country.

This rate accounts for nearly one-fifth of the global prevalence, showcasing the significant impact within this age group.

Regional disparities are evident, with teenage pregnancy rates varying from 6% in Greater Accra to 26% in the Savannah Region.

Although alarming, there has been a decline in teenage motherhood from 19% to 11% since 1988.

These findings were disclosed during a zonal dissemination event of the Ghana 2022 Demographic and Health Survey.

The statistics emphasize a complex landscape of adolescent pregnancy and motherhood, with notable differences across regions.

The Ashanti region ranks second highest, with 24% of adolescent pregnancies recorded.

The dissemination of the 2022 Demographic and Health Survey brought together health experts, district, and assembly health executives to analyze the implications of the survey’s findings.

Head of the Social Statistics Section at the Ghana Statistical Service, Sarah Woode explained “It is not the best that within that age period we are having as many young women being pregnant.”

“This is a worrying situation that policymakers should do something about,” she said.

The Ghana 2022 Demographic and Health Survey serves as a comprehensive population-level study aimed at monitoring and evaluating the utilization and management of healthcare services across all 16 regions of the country.

Over a five-week period, the dissemination exercise focused on data collected from 15 key areas, including child health, malaria, infant and child mortality, HIV/AIDS, and health insurance.

Additionally, the survey explored topics such as marriage and sexuality, fertility, family planning, household water and sanitation, women’s empowerment, domestic violence, and agency, as well as consent and coercion.

Emmanuel George Osei, Director of Regional Offices at the Ghana Statistical Service, emphasized that the report will serve as a crucial source of information for the Ministry of Health, enabling the assessment of outcomes and impacts of health programs.

“Health facilities use our data a lot. This guides them in their policy evaluation and formulation regarding health issues in the country. The Ghana health service and the health ministry can use this in the light as well,” he said.

  • Mepe Development Association express disappointment in Akufo-Addo over response to Akosombo Dam

Mepe Development Association express disappointment in Akufo-Addo over response to Akosombo Dam

The Mepe Development Association (MDA) has voiced its disappointment in President Akufo-Addo for what it perceives as an inadequate response to the devastating Akosombo Dam flood disaster.

In an official statement released by the MDA and signed by Fabian Mawulenu Kojo, Chairman of the MDA, the government’s ‘deafening silence’ on the plight of over 40,000 displaced persons during the 2024 State of the Nation Address was criticized.

The association condemned the president’s behavior as “the epitome of insensitivity and dereliction of duty” toward the affected communities.

Despite promises made by the state and its agencies four months ago, the MDA asserted that the affected communities, particularly those in the Lower Volta region, have been left to fend for themselves.

Tragically, many lives have been lost, and thousands remain traumatized and homeless.

Additionally, the MDA expressed disappointment in the lack of action from the inter-ministerial committee chaired by the Chief of Staff, which has failed to visit the affected communities or engage with local leaders to assess the impact of the disaster and plan a way forward.

The association also highlighted the insufficient support from the government and the delay in disbursing funds allocated for disaster recovery.

Despite announcements of significant financial aid, including pledges from the World Bank and the government’s budget allocations, the Mepe Traditional Area, at the heart of the disaster, has yet to receive any substantial assistance.

Furthermore, the statement criticized specific government officials, including the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, and the Deputy Director-General of NADMO, Mr. Seji Saji, for their apparent lack of involvement in relocation efforts and disaster management.

The MDA emphasized the urgent need for accountability and action from the government to support the resettlement of flood victims, restore livelihoods, and reconstruct infrastructure in the affected communities.

In conclusion, the association called on President Akufo-Addo and the inter-ministerial committee to address the plight of the affected communities without further delay.

The MDA warned that the patience of the people has been stretched to its limit, demanding immediate action to alleviate their suffering.

  • Zenabu’s inspirational path to overcoming poverty, empowering marginalized communities

Zenabu’s inspirational path to overcoming poverty, empowering marginalized communities

In the aftermath of enduring the loss of her father and grappling with poverty, Zenabu Awinbe Salifu has emerged as a symbol of hope for numerous disadvantaged individuals in the Upper East Region.

“I hail from a family of 11, and I’m the 5th born. I was born in Takoradi, began my primary education there, then continued at Manga JSS in Bawku after my father passed away in the early 80s,” Zenabu recounted.

In the face of pervasive gender bias in northern Ghana, where preference is often given to male children, Zenabu defied the odds that could have resulted in early marriage or school dropout.

Instead, she took on various menial jobs to finance her school expenses, challenging the notion that investing in a girl’s education is futile.

Zenabu, having triumphed over numerous challenges, now dedicates herself to helping young girls and vulnerable women overcome similar obstacles. Through her NGO, the Sung Biela Foundation, she empowers disadvantaged individuals, embodying resilience and empowerment.

Initiating projects that significantly impact the lives of many schools and individuals in the Upper East Region, particularly within the Kusaug Traditional Area, Zenabu’s efforts have reached approximately 30,000 students through donations of teaching and learning materials.

Her mentorship and career guidance programs instill hope in young girls, motivating them to pursue education and aspire to a brighter future.

Additionally, Zenabu supports widows by facilitating their involvement in small-scale trading, enabling them to attain financial independence and stability. Through these diverse initiatives, Zenabu demonstrates her dedication to uplifting communities and fostering positive societal change in the region.

    Supports to schools

In 2021, Zenabu’s NGO extended a helping hand to Manga Junior High School in the Bawku Municipality by donating essential educational materials including mathematical sets, textbooks, pens, pencils, exercise books, erasers, and past question & answer booklets.

Recognizing similar challenges faced by seven other schools in the Binduri and Bawku West Districts, as well as within the Bawku Municipality, Zenabu’s organization also provided educational resources to alleviate their burdens.

Journalists covering the donation ceremony uncovered worrying situations at some schools, such as Binduri Junior High School A and B, where the headmaster then, Joseph Abugre, expressed the difficulties in teaching and learning due to the lack of textbooks.

Similarly, other schools like Kpeliwega JHS, Zabugu JHS, Azariya JHS, Buabula Primary and JHS, Asobelaga Primary School, and Watania JHS faced similar challenges, prompting Sung Bie’la Foundation to select them for donations.

Drawing from her own experiences as an orphaned child struggling to access education at Manga JHS, Zenabu hopes that her contributions will ease the educational journey for young students. She recounted her personal hardships and emphasized her desire to motivate children to pursue their studies, inspired by the support she received during her own education journey.

In 2022, a similar act of generosity was extended to students in the area, and in 2023, educational materials valued at 28,000 cedis were donated to eight disadvantaged schools in the region. These beneficiary schools included Gentiga Primary and Junior High School, Bansi Junior High School, Yakut Modern Girls School, Yebongo Junior High School, Kusanaba Junior High School, and Kusanaba Senior High School, situated in the Bawku Municipal, Binduri District, Bawku West District, and Bolgatanga areas.

Thanks to the generous support of sponsors and donors who share the foundation’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for rural children, all schools received vital educational materials and supplies, encompassing textbooks, writing materials, and other learning aids.

Zenabu emphasized that these donations were part of the foundation’s mission to assist vulnerable individuals and communities in northern Ghana in improving their living conditions. She encouraged students to prioritize their studies and urged teachers to provide guidance and support, particularly to those students in need.

The foundation aims to equip children with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in life through its various programs and initiatives, believing that collaborative efforts can significantly impact the lives of rural children and help them build brighter futures.

Teachers from several schools expressed gratitude to the organization for its efforts in aiding underprivileged children, pledging to utilize the donated items for their intended purposes.

Visit Bawku communities and donations to needy

In December 29, 2022, two days before the New Year, it was a warm Thursday afternoon. Both adults and children waited patiently to receive their share of clothes, shoes, rice, salt, and other food items gathered from charitable people across Ghana in a manner as though they were spectators in a stadium to watch a football match.

Those who lacked clothing and shoes moved toward the pickup that had stopped in front of a house near a mosque. Other residents including children and adults had also started to move closer to the Nissan pickup, and soon a group of people engulfed in awe emerged. Many children who did not have or have few clothes or shoes got one or two of them.

Bolgatanga Senior High School student Asaanbil Mustapha, 18, said, “I don’t know what it means to have these things.” Items like books and a solar lamp were given to Asaanbil so he can continue to study at home.

A rough count put the number of recipients at close to 300, either having given up on education or juggling it with manageable problems.

There was no difference in the situations at Kaadi, Agumse, and Atuba. Because of their extreme poverty, parents and guardians cannot afford to buy essential items for their children. Majority of them in the communities had experienced daily effects from that. Many of them had no expectations for the holiday season because of the harsh realities they had to face early in life. One of the kids, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “Honestly, I didn’t expect anything.”

Zenabu said, “It is my responsibility to help the underprivileged through some support from friends to improve their quality of life.” Zenabu stated that wanting to support society has always been a personal passion of hers.

In Zabugu, Agumse, Atuba, and Kaadi, things that other children take for granted were actually necessities. “I want everyone here to know that this is not the end for them; you will rise above this and transform into a better person someday, who will also return to assist those in need.”

Some elderly women who collected their gifts were excited. When asked what prompted the excitement, one of them responded that she never imagined she would receive such items.

Only death, according to Zenabu, will make her give up helping society’s less fortunate.

Over 500 widows and underprivileged received foodstuffs

On December 26, 2022, a group of widows and underprivileged people from various communities in the Kusaug Traditional Area in the Upper East Region were overjoyed when they received food gifts from the Sung Bie’la Foundation. The NGO provided them with food at Bawku Technical Institute.

For the past nine years, “we have been assisting community members, including the less fortunate in society, such as widows,” Zenabu said.

Zenabu stated that by empowering widows and underprivileged such as the aged through feeding programs, they have improved their working relationships.

She indicated that the programme has helped widows reduce stress by providing them with food to share with their family members. Beneficiaries were given rice, salt, and cooking oil, among other things, at the event.

Mba Saaki Anaane from Songo in the Garu area, one of the beneficiaries, praised the foundation for assisting them during this festive season.

“We are grateful to have been given food to feed our families; may the Almighty God continue to bless us through such feeding programmes,” she said.

Another Songo Garu resident, Hawa Akolgo, said she would have struggled to feed her family if the assistance had not arrived. Hawa requested that Zenabu and her team continue to assist the underprivileged, as they do not have immediate assistance.

For Zenabu, it is her responsibility, as well as the responsibility of all Ghanaians, to assist widows and the underprivileged because they did not wish to become what they are today.

“I help widows because they have no other support than the little farming.” Zenabu stated that she is always available to help them.

Sung Bie’la gifts baby items to mothers at health facilities in Bawku

On December 29, 2022, Sung Bie’la Foundation presented gifts to 19 newly delivered mothers and their babies at Vineyard and Quality hospitals in Bawku. The Foundation surprised the mothers who could have spent so much on purchasing items such as diapers, baby clothes, sanitary pads, and other necessities due to the current economic challenges. The gift was part of the Foundation’s effort to help women live meaningful lives.

Zenabu said that the declaration for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pledges that no one will be left behind on the collective journey to end poverty, eradicate hunger, and combat inequalities, and that special attention must be paid to the needs of the vulnerable.

The mothers who received the items expressed their gratitude to the Foundation and asked for God’s blessings on them. Taiba Rauf, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying she did not expect such a generous gesture. “May God richly bless them so that they can continue to give back to society.”

Joyce Boahene, the Vineyard facility’s midwife, was excitement and urged other organizations to emulate Sung Bie’la to support vulnerable women.

Simon’s legs amputation and Zenabu’s support

Simon Alale whose legs were amputated after a bus accident in 2019 on his way back to Garu in the Upper East Region got support from Zenabu’s foundation.

The accident had destabilized the life of the former caretaker of a cocoa farm in Prestea in the Western Region. When his father died, Simon took over and assisted the family until he was returning home for the final funeral rites.

Simon said the anguish he feels every waking hour as a result of losing both legs is mirrored by the pain he sees his family going through, pain that makes him angry and sad. Simon was doing everything he could  to turn back time, to stop the pain, and to start over.

The story of Simon had moved the founder of the Sung Bie’la Foundation who decided to donate GHȼ7,000 to help the family. Zenabu said she heard about Simon’s condition through another person and decided to speak to some friends who supported.

“Initially, he wanted us to get a tricycle that will work for him because he has no legs. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to raise the funds to get him the tricycle.”

Simon started a business for the benefit of his family and to the glory of God. “I’d use the money to open a shop, stock items, and sell them. It could assist me in caring for my mother, wife and children.”

Because the house was not connected to the national grid, Zenabu gave two solar lamps to the family. Simon said that he was starting to see reasons why he needed to let go of the past and start over.

JoyNews highlighted Simon’s predicament which attracted a philanthropist who wants to remain anonymous to assist him establish a business.

The philanthropist donated 5000 cedis to the accident victim through Sung Bie’la Foundation that initially donated 7000 cedis to Simon. This meant that a sum of 12, 000 cedis had been donated to Simon to establish the business.

Simon thanked them for the assistance provided so far and requested more in order to establish himself successfully.

International Women’s Day presents opportunity for Zenabu, others

As the world observes International Women’s Day, it presents a significant opportunity to recognize the accomplishments, resilience, and fortitude of women worldwide like Zenabu.

In a gender-equal world, imagine a reality devoid of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. Picture a society that embraces diversity, fosters equity, and promotes inclusivity – a world where differences are not only accepted but celebrated. In such a world, Zenabu and countless other women wouldn’t have had to endure the childhood challenges they faced. Instead, they would have been empowered to pursue their dreams without the barriers imposed by societal norms and gender expectations.

It’s a vision where opportunities are equally accessible to all, regardless of gender, and where every individual is valued and respected for their unique contributions.

Zenabu attributed her journey to perseverance, determination, hard work, and an unwavering spirit of resilience, alongside the grace of God. She emphasized that her impoverished upbringing serves as her primary motivation, compelling her to strive diligently to uplift others from similar circumstances.

“My impoverished background serves as my motivation; it compels me to work hard so I can uplift others from poverty,” Zenabu expressed

Reflecting on the impactful work of her NGO over the past four years, she underscored the importance of prioritizing faith, diligence, focus, determination, and perseverance in achieving one’s aspirations.

Her advice encapsulated the essence of her personal ethos: “Put God first, work hard, stay focused, be determined, and persevere until you reach your goals.”

Drivers warned to adhere to traffic laws

Head of the Orthopaedic Unit at Wenchi Methodist Hospital in the Bono region, Emmanuel Denteh, urges road users to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent fatal accidents during the Easter holidays.

He emphasizes that the festive season sees increased travel, with drivers sometimes prioritizing profit over safety by speeding, overloading vehicles, and driving recklessly.

“I want to remind all road users, especially commercial drivers, of the need to be cautious on the road and strictly observe road traffic rules and regulations to avoid accidents during and after the festivities,” he added.

Addressing JoyNews in Wenchi, Mr. Denteh voiced concern about the influx of accident casualties admitted to the Orthopaedic Unit with fractures, twists, and joint dislocations.

He attributed this surge to the festive season’s celebrations, during which many drivers indulge in alcohol consumption, leading to speeding and reckless overtaking.

“Alcohol and driving are never compatible and leads to destruction, so drivers and motorbike riders shouldn’t be intoxicated before driving.

“The thing is if you drink, do not drive, if you drive, do not drink,” he stressed.

Mr Denteh said, “There is a new practice where motorbike riders push their mobile phones into the crash helmet on the chin to keep conversing over the phone while riding, but this is very dangerous”.

He urged motorbike riders to be extra careful on the roads and use crash helmets to escape head injuries or even death during accidents.

He further stressed the importance of road signs and implored road users to let it be their priority, adding without knowledge of road signs, one cannot call him or herself a good driver.

He said road safety is a shared responsibility, calling on all stakeholders to play their roles to prevent the carnage on the roads in the country.

  • Life of MPs become miserable when they leave parliament – Joe Wise

Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Joseph Osei Owusu, has underscored the importance of MPs taking charge of their futures, pointing out the lack of societal support once they exit office.

Speaking at a session honoring the late Kwadwo Tawiah, a former MP for Kpandai, Owusu lamented the challenging circumstances many former MPs encounter after leaving Parliament.

He highlighted the tendency for society to overlook their difficulties, only recognizing them during emergencies or financial crises.

“There have been several instances where former MPs are seen in miserable conditions, struggling to pay for hospital bills and support their families,” Joe Wise noted.

Member of Parliament for Asawase, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the absence of unity among MPs.

He observed that many MPs are unfamiliar with their colleagues’ personal circumstances and challenges.

“Life after Parliament is unbearable for many members,” Muntaka added, urging MPs to support each other regardless of political affiliations.
