“I will not accept it, the winner should be given the victory” – Pakistan politician after elections were rigged in his favour

A senior Pakistani politician, victorious in Karachi’s provincial elections, resigns.

The elections on February 8 faced rigging accusations, particularly against independent candidates aligned with jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Caretaker government and election commission dismiss rigging claims, citing existing investigation mechanisms.

Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, representing the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party, emerges as the winner of provincial seat 129 in Karachi, securing over 26,000 votes.

Rehman alleges discrepancies in the vote count, claiming that votes originally cast for Saif Bari, an independent candidate backed by Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, were reduced from 31,000 to 11,000 during the tabulation of votes from individual polling stations.

Khan, currently incarcerated on corruption and criminal charges, saw his PTI party barred from contesting elections, prompting its members to run as independents. Despite accusations, the military denies interference in political matters.

“Public opinion should be respected, let the winner win, let the loser lose, no one should get anything extra,” Rehman told Reuters on Wednesday.

“I will not accept it, the winner should be given the victory.”

Saif Bari was unavailable for comment, and the PTI stated that it would take some time to get back to them. A request for comment from the election commission was not immediately answered.

Ghanaian woman fined for assaulting sugar daddy’s wife with boiling soup

In a recent case before the Amasaman Circuit Court, a young Ghanaian woman, Afia Agyeiwaa, has been fined GH₵1,200.00 for throwing boiling palm nut soup at her sugar daddy’s wife, Madam Vida Ntiamoah.

The incident, which occurred in November 2023, resulted in harm to Madam Vida.

Agyeiwaa admitted to the offense when she appeared in court. However, her sentencing was delayed until February 15, 2024.

At the time of the incident, Agyeiwaa was pregnant, and she is now the mother of a two-month-old infant.

During her appearance in court, Agyeiwaa pleaded for leniency. Madam Enid Marfo-Sau, who presided over the case, considered Agyeiwaa’s status as a nursing mother.

Additionally, it was noted that Madam Vida had informed the prosecution that the matter had been resolved amicably at home.

Taking these factors into account, the court imposed a fine on Agyeiwaa for her actions.

During the sentencing proceedings, the court learned that the complainant, Madam Vida, expressed a desire to withdraw the charges against Afia Agyeiwaa.

However, the court deemed it too late to drop the charges, although it took this information into consideration.

According to Police Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah, Madam Vida is a trader residing in Mayera Dunyo, while Afia Agyeiwaa, who was seven months pregnant at the time of the incident, is currently unemployed and also lives in Mayera Dunyo.

Inspector Awuah-Ansah provided further context, stating that Madam Vida’s spouse, Kwadwo Dwuma, is a traditional priest with four children. Agyeiwaa was identified as Dwuma’s girlfriend, which led to tensions between her and Madam Vida.

The prosecution detailed the escalation of the conflict, explaining that Agyeiwaa frequently insulted Madam Vida despite her attempts to ignore the insults. The situation reached a boiling point on September 19, 2023, when Agyeiwaa, who was cooking nearby, verbally abused Madam Vida while she was in her kitchen.

  • Israel stands firm against unilateral imposition of Palestinian state

Israel stands firm against unilateral imposition of Palestinian state

Israel has officially declared its opposition to what it perceives as the unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood, insisting that any such recognition must be achieved through direct negotiations.

Prime Minister Netanyahu brought the “declaratory decision” to a vote in the cabinet, which was unanimously approved, as reported earlier in the day.

Netanyahu emphasized during the weekly meeting that this move follows recent discussions in the international community about potential attempts to unilaterally impose a Palestinian state on Israel.

Efforts to establish a two-state solution, with a Palestinian state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza alongside Israel, have remained stagnant for decades.

According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office, Israel categorically rejects any international mandates regarding a permanent agreement with the Palestinians. It asserts that any agreement must be reached through direct negotiations without preconditions.

The statement further asserts that Israel will continue to oppose the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. It warns that such recognition, especially following recent events, would reward terrorism and impede any prospects for future peace agreements.

  • Belgium foreign minister urges activation of diplomacy to cease Israel’s Gaza conflict

Belgium foreign minister urges activation of diplomacy to cease Israel’s Gaza conflict

Belgium’s Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib has told Al Jazeera that “it is crystal clear that the proper answer to this conflict is not a military one”.

“We need to negotiate to activate diplomacy and that’s exactly the message that hundreds, maybe thousands of people are delivering by the demonstration on the street [outside the Conference site]. As responsible politicians, we have to work hard to find an agreement for a two-state solution. This is the only way to tackle this problem properly,” she said outside the Munich Security Conference.

“[At the conference] I have heard that the negotiations are not going well. Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, is saying that he will maybe launch a ground military operation [in Rafah]. This is really alarming,” Lahbib added.

“There are 1.5 million people, a civilian population, who are in very difficult, disastrous situation. Humanitarian access is blocked over there. We must remind that the International Court of Justice decision asking for the humanitarian aid access should be respected.”

  • Israeli strikes render Gaza Strip’s second-largest hospital inoperative

Israeli strikes render Gaza Strip’s second-largest hospital inoperative

Amidst ongoing conflict and fuel shortages, the Gaza Strip’s second-largest hospital, Nasser Hospital, in the southern city of Khan Yunis, has been forced completely out of service.

Local and UN health officials reported that Israeli raids have contributed to the hospital’s closure as Israel engages in battles with Hamas militants in the Palestinian enclave.

Despite the hospital still providing shelter for patients afflicted by war injuries and Gaza’s escalating health crisis, the facility lacks power and adequate staffing to attend to all patients, according to Hamas health officials.

“It’s gone completely out of service,” the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qidra told Reuters.

AI falsely accuses, fines artificial intelligence expert of using phone while driving

“There are only four medical staffers currently caring for patients inside the facility,” he said.

Gaza’s hospitals have become a focal point in the ongoing four-month conflict between Israel and Hamas, the ruling party in the Strip.

Most hospitals have been rendered inoperable due to the intensifying fighting and severe fuel shortages, leaving Gaza’s population of 2.3 million without adequate access to healthcare.

Tens of thousands have been injured by airstrikes, while many others suffer from chronic illnesses and, increasingly, starvation, according to officials from Hamas’s health department.

Accusations of Misuse of Medical Facilities

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have conducted operations within medical facilities, claiming to have discovered Hamas weapons and evidence of hostages being held in hospitals. Hamas denies these allegations. The international community stresses the importance of protecting hospitals, which are designated as protected under international law.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged Israel to allow its staff access to Nasser Hospital, where a week-long siege and IDF raids have hindered efforts to assist patients.

“Despite our efforts, WHO teams have been denied entry to assess patient conditions and address critical medical needs,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The IDF reported that its special forces have been engaged in operations in and around Nasser Hospital, resulting in the elimination of dozens of Hamas militants and the seizure of a significant number of weapons.

According to the military, ongoing operations have targeted terrorists in Nasser Hospital, leading to the arrest of at least 100 suspects, the neutralization of armed individuals in the vicinity, and the discovery of weapons within the hospital premises.

Hamas has refuted claims that its fighters use medical facilities as cover for their activities.

    Impact on Gaza’s Population

Israel’s air and ground offensive has had far-reaching effects across Gaza, displacing nearly all inhabitants from their homes. Hamas health authorities report that 28,985 people, predominantly civilians, have been killed in the conflict.

The conflict began when Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people, primarily civilians, and the abduction of 253 hostages.

  • Judge in Brazil fines construction firm R$240m over collapsed building

Judge in Brazil fines construction firm R$240m over collapsed building

In the city of São Paulo, a judge has imposed fines totaling R$240 million ($48.3 million; £38.3 million) on officials and construction firms in response to a catastrophic building site collapse.

The tragedy occurred in 2007, claiming the lives of seven individuals when a massive sinkhole suddenly emerged, engulfing pedestrians and vehicles. The incident transpired as workers were excavating a tunnel to expand the metro system in the Pinheiros neighborhood, leading to a sudden collapse of the earth.

The judge attributed the disaster to “negligent” and “hazardous” actions, emphasizing that project leaders disregarded warnings from experts who stressed the urgent need for support structures in the tunnel. Despite these warnings, construction continued hastily in a bid to expedite the project.

Former executives of São Paulo’s Metrô, an engineer, and a construction inspector, alongside six companies, were among those ordered to pay compensation. Even one worker, who tragically passed away in 2018, was held liable posthumously, with the judge mandating restitution from his heirs.

The sinkhole, spanning 2,200 square meters (23,680 square feet), swallowed a minibus, demolished seven homes, and displaced around 200 individuals. Aerial images of the site depicted the magnitude of the crater, with vehicles submerged within.

Prosecutors emphasized the profound impact of the disaster on São Paulo’s populace, describing the trauma as “extraordinarily intense” for Brazil’s most populous city.

Despite the verdict, those convicted are anticipated to file appeals against the ruling.

Navalny: The award-winning film documenting a life and possible death

In the award-winning 2022 documentary “Navalny,” Canadian director Daniel Roher engages in a poignant exchange with Russian political activist Alexei Navalny.

The first question posed to Navalny, “If you are killed, if this does happen, what message do you leave behind to the Russian people?” sets a solemn tone.

Navalny’s subsequent response, “Come on Daniel, no,” with a smile, now carries a weighty significance following his tragic demise in a Russian prison.

The film, which unfolds Navalny’s investigation into his poisoning with the nerve agent Novichok, captures his resilience amidst peril. Despite facing grave danger in Russia, Navalny’s resolve remains unyielding.

Roher reflects on the profound impact of his friendship with Navalny during the filmmaking process. Their bond, built on mutual respect and humor, provided moments of levity amidst the gravity of the subject matter.

The documentary chronicles Navalny’s harrowing ordeal, from his collapse on a flight to his eventual arrest upon returning to Russia. It captures the tension of Navalny’s return and his subsequent imprisonment, juxtaposed with intimate moments spent with his family.

Throughout the film, the specter of Navalny’s mortality looms large. In a poignant scene, Navalny acknowledges the possibility of his demise, remarking on Roher’s filming with a wry humor tinged with resignation.

Released before his death, “Navalny” garnered acclaim for its gripping portrayal of Navalny’s courage and determination. Now, in the wake of his passing, the film serves as a poignant testament to his legacy.

In the final scene, Navalny’s words resonate with a haunting significance. “We don’t realize how strong we actually are… Don’t be inactive,” he urges, leaving behind a powerful message for the Russian people.

Mr Roher says that making the film has changed his life.

“It had such a profound impact on me as a human being,” he said.

“When I think about his life, it will remind me that no matter what situation life throws at you … if you have levity and you do not lose your humanity – keep laughing, keep writing your wife’s Valentines Day messages – everything will be better.

“Everything isn’t going to be okay for Alexei as we know, but his life is a masterclass in courage and resilience, and light in dark.”

  • President Biden pledges $60bn in military aid to Ukraine

President Biden pledges $60bn in military aid to Ukraine

President Joe Biden has pledged to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that $60 billion in military assistance is en route.

Although the measure awaits a final congressional vote, President Biden expressed confidence that it would pass.

President Zelensky had previously urgently requested additional weaponry to prevent a “catastrophic” situation in Europe.

The US attributed Ukraine’s withdrawal from the battle at Avdiivka to a lack of congressional support.

Russian forces captured Avdiivka, a crucial gateway to the eastern regional capital Donetsk, marking a significant territorial gain.

A White House statement lamented the withdrawal, attributing it to insufficient congressional action leading to ammunition shortages.

After months of political negotiations, the US Senate approved a $95 billion foreign aid package, including $60 billion for Ukraine. However, the package faces challenges in the House of Representatives, where Republican members are divided on the issue.

President Biden expressed his determination to support Ukraine, stating, “I’m going to fight until we get them the ammunition they need and the capacity they need to defend themselves.”

President Zelensky also urged US lawmakers to approve the financial package, expressing gratitude for President Biden’s support.

The conflict in Ukraine remains a focal point, with President Zelensky highlighting the need for additional weapons to counter Russian aggression.

Ukraine’s reliance on Western support, particularly from the US, remains crucial in its efforts against Russia, which has superior military capabilities.

International support, including from the UK and the EU, is seen as vital in bolstering Ukraine’s defenses against Russia.

However, Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko expressed disappointment with the American leadership, stating, “We’re dying every day.”

Avdiivka has been a battleground since 2014, when Russian-backed fighters seized control of parts of eastern Ukraine.

The recent territorial gains by Russian forces underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Thailand’s ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra returns home after jail release

Thailand’s former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, convicted of corruption and abuse of power, has been released on parole and returned to his mansion in Bangkok.

The billionaire, aged 74, was freed from a police hospital where he had been serving a one-year sentence. He had been detained upon his return to Thailand in August after 15 years in self-imposed exile but did not spend a night in jail due to health complaints.

Originally sentenced to eight years, his term was reduced to one by the king shortly after his return, sparking criticism over preferential treatment for the wealthy and powerful.

Thailand’s Move Forward Party, which won the majority of seats in the last election but was blocked from forming a government, called for equal treatment under the law.

Questions have been raised about Thaksin’s health, with Senator Somchai Swangkarn questioning the need for parole.

Thaksin, a polarizing figure, was seen leaving the police hospital, greeted with well wishes on social media. He is eligible for parole due to age and health reasons, though conditions of his release were not disclosed.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin stated readiness to listen to Thaksin’s political advice but has no immediate plans to meet him.

Thaksin, ousted by a coup in 2006, spent years in exile in London and Dubai. His family’s Pheu Thai party currently holds power in Thailand.

While reviled by Bangkok’s elite, he remains popular among rural Thais for his populist policies. Thaksin made history as Thailand’s first elected PM to serve a full term from 2001-2006.

Anas’ exposé has cost Ghana football a lot – John Paintsil

In the course of his appearance on United Showbiz, former Ghanaian footballer John Paintsil attributed part of the decline in Ghanaian football to Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ exposé.

He contested the notion that the Ghana Football Association solely bears responsibility for the current state of football in the country.

Expressing uncertainty about the objectives of the SaveGhanaFootball demonstration held on Valentine’s Day, Paintsil questioned its purpose.

He emphasized that the state of football in the country relies on club owners, stressing that it is their duty to ensure their clubs excel and produce talented players deserving of national team recognition.

Reflecting on his own experience, he recalled playing for Berekum Arsenals in the lower division, yet his standout performance led to an invitation from the U-20 coach, Emmanuel Afranie, which he lived up to.

Addressing rumors of bribery for national team selection, he affirmed that he didn’t engage in such practices during his career and cannot speak for the current generation.

The former West Ham United defender went on to assert that the negative impact of the Anas Exposé cannot be overlooked when discussing the state of football, as it disrupted the sport and is partly responsible for its current condition.

  • Anti-gay bill: It is unjust to penalize people because their actions differ from others – Human rights researcher

Anti-gay bill: It is unjust to penalize people because their actions differ from others – Human rights researcher

A human rights researcher, Dr. Michael Gyan Nyarko, has voiced his dissent against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, emphasizing that his apprehensions extend beyond mere suggestions of non-custodial sentences.

In his view, a democratic society should embrace diverse perspectives and viewpoints, even amidst disagreement with others’ beliefs.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, February 17, he argued that penalizing individuals for actions or beliefs divergent from others’ opinions is unjust and incompatible with democratic principles.

“It’s okay to disagree with such views or conduct but the idea that because you disagree with a particular view, then the people should suffer criminal consequences for it, is completely overbroad and it’s something that the democracy should not admit.”

“If you disagree with LGBTQ rights because of your religion, that is fair enough, you should have the right as a religious person to say I disagree with it. I will protect your rights too to say that,” he said.

Dr. Nyarko underscored the difference between moral disapproval of an action and imposing criminal penalties for that action.

He highlighted that while society may morally disapprove of numerous activities, it doesn’t necessarily warrant criminalization of those actions.

“People might disapprove of smoking or drinking alcohol but to the extent that, you will say that, because I have a moral disagreement to that particular conduct, then the person should be criminally liable, it’s wrong“he said.

On Thursday, February 8, Parliament passed a law imposing a three-to-five-year prison sentence for those who intentionally promote or financially support LGBTQ activities. Additionally, individuals caught engaging in such activities themselves will face sentences ranging from a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 3 years.

The advancement of the bill had been at a standstill for months, provoking frustration among its supporters. They accused certain Members of Parliament of conspiring with pro-LGBT advocates to obstruct its passage.

During a passionate press conference, Sam George, the leading advocate for the anti-LGBT bill, stated:”Those who have gone and gotten influenced by persons who have an interest in the LGBTQ should return whatever influence they have collected because we will fight, and the next time we address the media, I will mention names.”

Shatta Wale voices frustrations over media treatment compared to Nigerian artists

Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale has once more voiced his frustrations with how certain Ghanaian media outlets tend to undervalue him in comparison to Nigerian artists.

He disclosed that Burna Boy had stayed with him in Ghana for eighteen months, yet now, Burna Boy receives more recognition than him.

Shatta Wale further lamented that despite Davido visiting Ghana and heading straight to his residence, their relationship has deteriorated over time due to the treatment he receives from Ghanaian media channels.

“Everyone with whom I began music has stopped.” The industry has created the impression that they do not have any markets, but in my opinion, they are still operating in some. I am not even considered a celebrity by most Ghanaians, and I always have a problem with the media because they treat me disrespectfully.

Because they have microphones, people will say anything when they sit in the radio. Additionally, I do not play because I have a microphone. I don’t disrespect people, but when people disrespect me, I retaliate. Davido came to Ghana and drove right into my house to see me.

Burna Boy came to Ghana and stayed with me for one and a half years, but today you can’t even compare us. The problem is us, because we don’t want to see the good in our artists, not foreigners.”

When Burna Boy sought refuge in Ghana amidst conflicts in Nigeria, Shatta Wale embraced him like family and offered his support.

Throughout Burna Boy’s stay, Shatta Wale collaborated with him on numerous songs and accompanied him to various performances.

U.S. to establish 5 military bases for Somali Army

In a bid to enhance the capabilities of the Somali national army amidst persistent threats from extremist groups, the United States has announced plans to construct up to five military bases for Somalia.

The memorandum of understanding, signed by Somalia’s defense minister and the U.S. charge d’affaires in Mogadishu, marks a significant step towards strengthening Somalia’s defense infrastructure.

These military bases, to be associated with the Somali military’s Danab Brigade, were established in 2017 under a joint initiative between the U.S. and Somalia.

The Danab Brigade, comprising 3,000 men and women recruited, trained, equipped, and mentored from across Somalia, serves as a vital quick-reaction force in countering the extremist group al-Shabab.

While progress has been made in improving security, evidenced by the reduction of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, al-Shabab remains a persistent threat. The recent attack inside a military base in Mogadishu underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Somalia in combating extremism.

Despite its popularity among voters, especially in light of the upcoming competitive election year, the NHI bill’s phased implementation at a significant cost raises concerns among business stakeholders.

CLOGSAG boss reacts to reshuffle done by Akufo Addo

Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), Isaac Bampoe Addo, has criticized the basis for the recent ministerial reshuffle by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to Addo, if the reshuffle was primarily influenced by the performance of ministers who are lawmakers in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries, rather than their actual performance in office, then it sets a dangerous precedent for the country’s development.

Addo expressed concern over the apparent disregard for ministers’ impact and competence in their respective ministries, suggesting that prioritizing electoral success over job performance undermines the concept of meritocracy in public service.

In an interview with TV3’s Daniel Opoku on Thursday, February 15, Addo called for a reevaluation of the criteria used for ministerial reshuffling.

He questioned whether electoral success should serve as the sole measure of ministerial performance, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive assessment that considers ministers’ effectiveness in their roles.

“Because this is the benchmark that the highest level of governance in this country has given for ministers, not that they are performing in their ministries but it is based upon how they performed in their primaries at the constituencies.

“I think this is something we have to look at because it is dangerous for  our development  if this is the performance criteria that is being used.”

President Akufo-Addo relieved Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta of his portfolio in government, with immediate effect.

The other ministers who have also been removed include Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Works and Housing Minister Francis Asenso Boakye, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, Health, Kwasi Anoako Attah, Roads and Highways, Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Hon.
