Nollywood mourns the loss of veteran actor Dejumo Lewis

Nollywood actor Saidi Balogun has announced the passing of veteran actor Dejumo Lewis, who died at the age of 80.

Balogun confirmed the sad news through an Instagram post on Saturday, sparking an outpouring of condolences from fans and colleagues in the industry.

The cause of Lewis’s death, renowned for his role in ‘The Village Teacher,’ remains undisclosed.

The comments section of Balogun’s post reflects tributes to the incredible actor and wishes for eternal rest and strength for his grieving family.

    Background

Born in 1943, Mr Lewis was famous for the Kabiyesi role in The Village Headmaster, Nigeria’s longest-running television soap opera shown on NTA from 1968 to 1988 that starred Justus Esiri, Femi Robinson, and many others.

Thirty years after ‘The Village Headmaster’ was rested, the popular comedy-drama series aired on NTA returned to the screen in 2021.

It was after the NTA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP), which officially marked the beginning of a partnership to bring the iconic drama series back on the air.

The late actor reprised his role as Kabiyesi in the much-loved series now produced by WAP.

The late actor was featured in many films, such as Bisi, Daughter of the River in 1977, a historical drama about Bisi, a young woman caught amid political turmoil in pre-colonial Nigeria. He played the role of Ologbo, Bisi’s wise and protective father.

Pade Pade of 1983 is a comedy film that follows the hilarious misadventures of two friends who travel to London for a better life. The ace actor played Chief Maja, a wealthy Nigerian businessman who becomes their reluctant benefactor.

He played the role of Chief Ogunbiyi, a powerful politician with a hidden agenda, in the Thunderbolt movie of 1995. This action thriller stars Olu Jacobs as a detective on the trail of a dangerous criminal.

Mr Lewis also featured in A Private Storm of 1996 as Chief Olorode, the family patriarch who tries to guide his sons through the complexities of love and tradition. The drama tells the story of a young woman caught in a love triangle between two brothers.

Mr Lewis is also known for his memorable performances in films such as “A Place in the Stars” (2014), “Crossroads” (2020), and “Power of 1” (2018).

Sporting his wife’s T-shirt, he held a placard reading ‘More strength Afua’ and stood by her performing space, garnering admiration from onlookers.

The couple shared smiles and waves as an unidentified woman in the background praised Afua’s husband for his supportive gesture.

This display of solidarity follows his active participation in supporting Afua alongside her in-laws throughout the event. Afua’s brother expresses confidence in her ability to reach the 117-hour mark set for the singing marathon.

“We are poised to break the record and set a new record. So, I’ll encourage each and everyone at home to come and support this agenda and let’s all support the flag of Ghana because it hasn’t been easy. From 24th till now, it has not had rest not for a minute,” he exclusively told GhanaWebTV.

Afua Asantewaa Aduonum has currently surpassed the halfway mark of her attempt to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest singing marathon by an individual.

Zambia’s Foreign Minister resigns amid cash allegations from Chinese businessman

Zambia’s Foreign Minister, Stanley Kakubo, has stepped down from his position following allegations that he was captured on video receiving a stack of cash from a Chinese businessman.

While not denying his presence in the video, Mr. Kakubo cited “malicious claims over a business transaction” as the reason for his resignation, emphasizing the need to prevent government distraction amid controversy.

The video shows two individuals counting neatly stacked cash in both US dollars and Zambian kwacha, sparking speculation on social media about Mr. Kakubo’s involvement. Concerns were raised regarding the absence of a bank transfer and questions about tax payments related to the transaction.

Images of unverified handwritten notes mentioning the exchange of $100,000 between a Zambian and a Chinese mining company, dated July 8, 2022, further circulated on social media.

In his resignation letter, Mr. Kakubo did not dispute the video’s authenticity but claimed victimhood to “malicious claims over a business transaction” involving his private family business and a business partner.

Mr. Kakubo, who will continue as a Member of Parliament, expressed the intention to provide accurate context around the recent developments in due course.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema accepted the resignation, acknowledging Mr. Kakubo’s past contributions. This marks the second controversy involving Mr. Kakubo, with a previous bribery accusation dismissed as receiving a calendar and diary from a Chinese-owned cement company.

Chinese companies are significant investors in Zambia, with over 600 businesses investing more than $3 billion, as reported by the Chinese embassy in 2022. Mr. Kakubo’s resignation comes amid President Hichilema’s commitment to combat corruption, while the opposition calls for an investigation into the former minister.

  • Renowned Australian chef Bill Granger dead

Renowned Australian chef Bill Granger dead

The “godfather” of avocado toast, Bill Granger, an acclaimed Australian chef, passed away.

Granger, a self-taught chef from Melbourne, rose to prominence as a well-known international restaurateur and food writer.

On Christmas Day, at the age of 54, he passed away in a London hospital with his wife and three daughters by his side.

“He will be remembered as the ‘King of Breakfast’, for making unpretentious food into something special filled with sunshine,” they said on Instagram.

“He will be deeply missed by all.”

His cause of death has not been made public by his family.

Granger gained a devoted following, including many of his colleagues, over the course of his 30-year career. He also published 14 cookbooks, hosted several cooking shows on television, and launched over a dozen restaurants worldwide.

A number of celebrities, including Australian actor Hugh Jackman, former Masterchef Australia judge Matt Preston, and culinary icon Jamie Oliver, paid their respects to the star, describing him as a generous, gregarious, and endearing man.

“He was the loveliest man, and the joy he gave us – whether through his food, his books, the spaces he made for us or in person – came from the kindness and generosity and sheer, shining exuberance of his very self,” food author and TV chef Nigella Lawson wrote on Instagram.

“So devastated for his family. It’s too cruel.”

Granger began his career in 1993, after he dropped out of art school to open his first restaurant in Sydney when he was just 23 years old.

Bills – a sunny corner cafe – became renowned for simple dishes like avocado toast, ricotta pancakes with honeycomb butter, and top-quality coffee.

Its popularity exploded, and from there he opened more cafes in Japan, Korea and London with offshoot chain Granger & Co.

Australian chef Darren Robertson said Granger had “changed the entire breakfast game”, while Masterchef Australia alumnus Adam Liaw described him as “arguably [the] most influential pioneer of modern Australian food”.

“His ‘sunny’… codification of Australian cafe culture at Bills is the model on which every Australian cafe around the world is now built. Great guy, too,” Liaw wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Such was his impact that in January, Granger was recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia – one of the country’s top honours – for his contribution to tourism and hospitality.

Speaking to the BBC in 2019, the chef reflected on the humble foundations of his breakfast empire.

“I’ve done all these extraordinary things, just from liking to cook pancakes and scrambled eggs, which is pretty amazing.”

Granger is one of the people credited with the popularity of avocado and toast.

He recommended using an avocado that had been left to ripen for two to three days, before scooping it out its skin with a tablespoon in one smooth movement. It should then be chopped into egg-shaped chunks, he said.

“Just crush it on the sourdough toast yourself, and always serve with citrus – lemon or lime – and good sea salt, and coriander for freshness,” he told the Australian Financial Review.

Granger is survived by his wife and business partner, Natalie Elliott, and his three daughters, Edie, Inès and Bunny.

  • New York Times sues OpenAI, Microsoft over copyright infringement claims in ChatGPT training

New York Times sues OpenAI, Microsoft over copyright infringement claims in ChatGPT training

The New York Times, a prominent US news organization, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement in training the language model.

The lawsuit contends that ChatGPT, along with other large language models (LLMs), unlawfully used “millions” of articles from the New York Times without permission, resulting in damages amounting to “billions of dollars.”

The lawsuit argues that ChatGPT, by incorporating New York Times content without authorization, is now a direct competitor to the newspaper as a reliable source of information.

It claims that the language model sometimes generates “verbatim excerpts” from New York Times articles when queried about current events, offering access to subscription-based content for free.

Additionally, the lawsuit highlights instances where the Bing search engine, powered by ChatGPT, produced results sourced from a New York Times-owned website without proper attribution or referral links. This, according to the New York Times, not only deprives the newspaper of subscription revenue but also impacts advertising revenue from website visits.

The legal action, initiated in a Manhattan federal court on Wednesday, alleges that attempts for an “amicable resolution” were made in April when the New York Times approached Microsoft and OpenAI. The BBC has reached out to OpenAI and Microsoft for comments on the matter.

    Multiple lawsuits

It comes a month after a period of chaos at OpenAI where co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was sacked – and then rehired – over the course of a few days.

His sacking shocked industry insiders and led to staff threatening mass resignations unless he was reinstated.

But as well as the internal issues, the firm is now facing multiple lawsuits filed in 2023.

In September a similar copyright infringement case was brought by a group of US authors including Game of Thrones novelist George RR Martin and John Grisham.

That followed legal action brought by comedian Sarah Silverman in July, as well as an open letter signed by authors Margaret Atwood and Philip Pullman that same month calling for AI companies to compensate them for using their work.

And OpenAI is also facing a lawsuit alongside Microsoft – and programming site GitHub – from a group of computing experts who argue their code was used without their permission to train an AI called Copilot.

As well as these actions, there have been many cases brought against developers of so-called generative AI – that is, artificial intelligence that can create media based on text prompts – with artists suing text-to-image generators Stability AI and Midjourney in January, claiming they only function by being trained on copyrighted artwork.

None of these lawsuits have yet been resolved.

Shatta Wale describes Serwaa Amihere a “foolish’ villager

Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale has stirred controversy by referring to TV presenter Serwaa Amihere as a “foolish villager.”

The cause of the verbal attack revolves around Serwaa Amihere questioning the lack of support from Nigerians for Ghanaian singer Afua Asantewaa’s Guinness World Record attempt.

Afua Asantewaa is currently striving to break the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon, a feat that has garnered attention.

However, Shatta Wale took offense at Serwaa Amihere’s social media post, leading to a heated exchange and widespread discussion on various social media platforms.

Earlier this year, Nigerian Hilda Baci embarked on a World Record attempt, garnering significant love and support from Ghanaians. Various Ghanaian blogs extensively covered her journey, and social media users from Ghana rallied behind her.

In a noticeable contrast, the ongoing singathon by Afua Asantewaa, aiming for the Guinness World Record, has received minimal attention from Nigerian blogs.

Nigerian social media users appear largely unaware of Asantewaa’s impressive endeavor, creating a distinctive difference in the level of cross-border acknowledgment between the two events.

Serwaa Amihere jumped on social media to wonder why, writing: “Has any Nigerian tweeted in support of Afua?”

Shatta Wale was pissed over the question and descended on Serwaa Amihere and other Ghanaians raising similar sentiments.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stressed the need for prioritizing and investing more in the creative sector to unlock its immense potential.

During a surprise visit to Akwaaba Village, where singer Asantewaa Aduonum is attempting to break the world record for the longest individual singing marathon, the Vice President expressed concerns about the sector’s underinvestment hindering its growth.

“What is clear to me is that talents exist. There is a massive amount of talent in the creative arts but I don’t think we invest sufficiently in the sector.

“I believe that the returns on the investment could be high for the country because we are looking at job creation, exchange earnings and so on. But I don’t think that we have done sufficient over the years and we have to pay attention to this sector,” he said.

He asked Ghanaians to continue supporting the singer.

“What Afua is trying to do is to break a world record and it is not very easy to do. So on a day like this [Christmas day] when everybody is spending time with their families, It could be very lonely and I think that as Ghanaians we should give her all the support and encouragement we can.

“So I think we should give her all the support so I thought I should stop by here and let her know that Ghana is behind her and she should go ahead and break the record.”

“I have been following and I think that she is doing great. I think that Wednesday we will be back here by the grace [of God] and we will be back here to break the record,” he added.

Nigerian actress Ireti Doyle discusses conditions for nudity in film roles

Nollywood actress Ireti Doyle has disclosed the specific condition under which she would consider performing a nude scene in a movie.

The veteran actress emphasized that the script’s justification for such a scene is the sole requirement for her to engage in nudity on screen.

She clarified that she would decline any roles involving nudity for the sake of publicity or commercial purposes.

Ireti Doyle, 56, shared her perspective on this matter during a recent episode of the “Terms And Conditions” podcast.

She said, “There are characters that I wouldn’t play. And it has nothing to do with love scenes or nudity.

“For instance, if you expect me to go nude in a film, the script would have to justify it. If it was for sheer sensationalism and click baits, absolutely no. But if you are telling a story of rape or abuse, and there is something required, I’m sure we can work something around where you can achieve the level of realism that is required.

“And more to that like I said, as a professional actor, whatever objections you have about executing a character or a role, should be discussed before hand. Not while you are on set. You read the script. You knew what was required. What are you all about?”

Severe thunderstorms kills 10 in Eastern Australia during Christmas, Boxing Day

At least 10 individuals, including a nine-year-old girl, lost their lives during severe thunderstorms in eastern Australia on Christmas and Boxing Day.

The state of Queensland saw the majority of the casualties, leaving tens of thousands without power. Victoria and New South Wales also experienced widespread flooding and destructive winds.

The impactful storms brought strong winds that tore roofs off buildings, uprooted trees, and even ripped concrete-based electricity poles from the ground.

Despite the forecast of further thunderstorms, conditions are expected to improve over the next day.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever had a concrete power pole destroyed by a storm, that’s pretty significant. That’s unprecedented,” said Queensland Premier Steven Miles.

Residents in parts of New South Wales and South Australia were shocked to find hailstones the size of golf balls blanketing their lawns in summer.

“I haven’t seen anything like this in probably the 20 years I’ve lived in the town,” a resident of Melrose in South Australia told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

The most recent storms occurred over a week after Cyclone Jasper caused significant flooding in several parts of Queensland, with some areas receiving more rain in a matter of days than they would have in a year.

According to Mr. Miles, the damage caused by both storms could be worth billions of dollars.

They come after a string of heatwaves that have caused recent bushfires in several states, including New South Wales.

El Nino weather, usually linked to extreme events like cyclones and wildfires, is currently affecting the nation.

“When you start to piece together the experiences of this summer so far it is clear that we are living through an era of escalating climate consequences,” Simon Bradshaw, research director at the Climate Council – an independent communications organisation – told the Reuters news agency.

Australia has been plagued by a series of disasters in recent years – severe drought and bushfires, successive years of record floods, and six mass bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef.

A future of worsening disasters is likely unless urgent action is taken to halt climate change, the latest UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report warns.

Among the 10 people killed in the extreme weather over Christmas and Boxing Day was a girl, named in local media as nine-year-old Mia Holland-McCormack, whose body was found in a flooded storm drain after she went missing.

“Mia loved adventures and getting up to mischief,” reads a statement from a relative on a GoFundMe fundraising page set up to help Mia’s family following her death.

Three men drowned after a yacht capsized near Moreton Bay, off the coast of the city of Cairns. A further eight people had to be rescued from the water.

A man whose body was found in Victoria’s Gippsland region is thought to have been camping with a woman who was also killed.

Two women were found dead north of Brisbane after being swept away by floodwaters into a storm drain, while a further two people were killed after being hit by falling trees.

Reggie Rockstone, widely recognized as the ‘Hiplife Grand Papa,’ has expressed concern about certain occurrences on social media that seem to reflect a sense of animosity towards Ghanaian celebrities.

The veteran Ghanaian musician believes that the comments on social media platforms often magnify the negativity and hypocrisy directed at these public figures.

Israel expands ground offensive in Gaza refugee camps amid prolonged conflict

Israel has broadened its ground offensive, targeting Palestinian refugee camps in central Gaza, signaling a prolonged conflict with Hamas.

The United Nations has expressed deep concern as recent Israeli strikes in Bureij, Nuseirat, and Maghazi camps reportedly resulted in numerous casualties. The conflict has intensified in southern Gaza, particularly in the city of Khan Younis.

Amid the escalating violence, the Palestinian president has characterized the situation in Gaza as “beyond a war of annihilation.” The Hamas-run health ministry reports a grim toll, with at least 195 people killed in the past 24 hours and a total of over 21,100 casualties, predominantly children and women, during the 11-week-long conflict.

The conflict was triggered by a cross-border attack by Hamas gunmen on southern Israel on October 7, resulting in significant casualties and hostage-taking.

Palestinian media cited local officials and witnesses as saying dozens of civilians were killed as Israel kept up its strikes across Gaza overnight.

Heavy bombardment was reported in the Middle Area, particularly in Bureij, Maghazi and Nuseirat camps.

In Nuseirat, Israeli warplanes targeted the homes of the Nasser and Hazouqi families, killing a number of people and wounding dozens more, according to the official Wafa news agency.

Hamas-affiliated Safa news agency also reported that five had been killed in a strike on a girls school in Maghazi.

Residents meanwhile told Reuters news agency that there was heavy fighting east and north of Bureij district and in the nearby village of Juhr al-Deek.

Image caption,Israel has ordered the evacuation of areas of central Gaza where the UN says more than 150,000 people are living

There was no immediate comment from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), but spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told reporters on Tuesday evening that its forces had “expanded the combat to the area known as the Central Camps”.

The IDF also reiterated on Tuesday its order for residents to leave more than a dozen central areas running from the Gaza-Israel perimeter to the coast, including Bureij and Nuseirat camps.

According to the UN, the affected areas were home to nearly 90,000 people before the war. They also now include six shelters hosting about 61,000 displaced people, mostly from the north.

The residents have been told to move immediately to shelters in the nearby town of Deir al-Balah, which is already struggling to cope with several hundred thousand displaced people.

The UN human rights office said on Tuesday that it was gravely concerned about the continued bombardment of the Middle Area and its densely populated camps, citing a report from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) that Deir al-Balah’s al-Aqsa hospital had admitted 131 dead following Israeli strikes on Maghazi and Bureij on Sunday.

It also warned of a “deepening and already catastrophic humanitarian situation”, saying that all roads connecting the three camps had been destroyed and that any shelters and hospitals still operating were critically overcrowded and under-resourced.

A Palestinian woman living in the UK, Alaa, told the BBC that her family had been in Maghazi during Sunday’s strikes and were “having to live with… constant loss, constant fear”.

“Pulling people from under the rubble and losing friends, losing family members, being displaced, losing homes,” she said. “My four-year-old nephew, he had to evacuate with my family the other day and he was crying, asking for his dad who was killed a month ago.”

The IDF’s chief of staff, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, warned that the fighting with Hamas was taking place in “a complex area” and would therefore “continue for many more months”.

“There are no magic solutions or shortcuts in the fundamental dismantling of a terrorist organisation, except persistent and determined fighting, and we are very, very determined,” he added.

“We will also get to the Hamas leadership, whether it takes a week or months.”

He was speaking amid new signs of rising regional tensions with incidents linked to Iran-backed groups in the Red Sea, on the Lebanese border and in Iraq.

In his first interview since the start of the war, the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas – a political rival of Hamas who is based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank – said it was unprecedented in Palestinian history.

“What’s happening in the Palestinian territories is far beyond a disaster and far more than a genocide. The Palestinians have never seen anything like this,” he told Egypt’s ON TV.

“Even during the Nakba catastrophe in 1948. What’s happening today is far worse,” he added, referring to the Middle East war that followed Israel’s declaration of independence in 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were forced out of their homes.

Mr Abbas also warned that the West Bank could implode at any time.

On Wednesday, six Palestinians, including a 17-year-old boy, were killed in a drone strike during an Israeli raid on a refugee camp near the western West Bank town of Tulkarm, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

The IDF said six “armed terrorists” were killed in an air strike after they threw explosive devices at troops carrying out an operation to arrest wanted people.

In a tragic incident in Florida, two teenage brothers were arrested following the fatal shooting of their 23-year-old sister amid a dispute over Christmas presents.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the young woman was shot in the chest by her 14-year-old brother while she was carrying her 10-month-old son.

The situation escalated when the older brother, aged 15, retaliated by shooting the younger sibling. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a disagreement regarding the distribution of Christmas presents.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri stated that after the incident, the 15-year-old fled the scene, discarding his weapon along the way.

The 14-year-old brother was subsequently hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to be taken into police custody upon his release.

The incident has left the community in shock, highlighting a devastating outcome from a family dispute.

Local authorities are currently deliberating whether to try the younger brother as an adult for his sister’s murder, according to Sheriff Gualtieri.

The victim, a mother of two, was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries. Sheriff Gualtieri noted that she suffered from internal bleeding and respiratory failure.

Fortunately, the baby she was carrying at the time was unharmed in the incident.

Meanwhile, the 15-year-old brother has been apprehended and faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and evidence tampering.

Lee Sun-kyun parasite actor dies at age 48

Renowned South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, celebrated for his standout performance in the Oscar-winning film Parasite, has been discovered dead in an apparent suicide in central Seoul.

Authorities found the 48-year-old actor’s lifeless body in a car near a city park on Wednesday, strongly suspecting he took his own life, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

Prior to his death, Lee had been under investigation since October for alleged involvement in illegal drug use. The police received a report stating that he had left his home after leaving a note. The actor’s body was transported to Seoul National University Hospital, and although an autopsy was suggested, his family declined. Lee is expected to be laid to rest on Friday.

An investigation has been initiated to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death, encompassing the timeline of his arrival at the scene and the exact time of his demise.

Lee Sun-kyun’s portrayal of the patriarch in Parasite contributed significantly to the film’s success, which secured four Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture award.

According to Yonhap, Lee Sun-kyun was under suspicion of consuming drugs, including marijuana and ketamine, with a hostess at a bar in Seoul. Despite admitting to taking substances provided by the hostess, he claimed ignorance about their illicit nature. The hostess allegedly informed the police that he had used drugs at her residence on multiple occasions, an assertion he denied. Lee had sought a lie detector test through his lawyer.

Contrary to the accusations, the results of his drug tests came back negative or inconclusive, as per the report. The police expressed regret over Lee’s death amid the ongoing investigation, emphasizing that the inquiry had been conducted with his consent, as reported by News1 Korea. Lee underwent three rounds of questioning, including a 19-hour session last Saturday, according to Yonhap.

Lee’s agency, HODU&U Entertainment, said in a statement: “There is no way to contain the sorrow and despair. We respectfully ask that you refrain from spreading false facts based on speculation… so that [Lee’s] final journey will not be unfair.”

News of his death sparked strong reactions online.

“I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for him. Rest in peace,” read a comment on one of the news reports.

“Aren’t celebrities human? People can make mistakes in their lives. It’s so sad,” said another.

There was also praise for his work.

One fan, writing on X (formerly Twitter), wrote: “I laughed and cried a lot while watching your acting. Thank you.”

  • Germany’s stern finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble passes away at 81

Germany’s stern finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble passes away at 81

Wolfgang Schäuble, the esteemed finance minister known for his no-nonsense approach, has died at the age of 81.

Schäuble, a prominent figure in German politics, served as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s finance minister for many years, playing a crucial role in navigating the country through economic challenges.

His passing marks the end of an era and is met with reflections on his impactful contributions to Germany’s financial landscape.

Current Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he had shaped his country for more than half a century and Germany had lost “a sharp thinker, a passionate politician and a pugnacious Democrat”.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Former UK Chancellor George Osborne praised Schäuble as “a great man, who had unified his country and was the last of the post-war Germans”.

For many Greeks, however, he was a hate figure during the eurozone debt crisis, as architect of a highly unpopular austerity programme imposed on their country. Former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis said history would “judge him harshly”.

Wolfgang Schäuble joined the conservative CDU party in 1965 and entered the Bundestag seven years later when he was 30.

As interior minister of West Germany, he co-signed the treaty in East Berlin that unified the country in August 1990. He later called reunification “the high point of my political life”.

Nine days after Germany was formally reunited, he was shot in the spinal cord and jaw during an election campaign event and used a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

He returned to the public stage months later with an impassioned call for the reunified country’s capital to be moved from Bonn to Berlin.

Wolfgang Schäuble (L) signed Germany’s reunification treaty on 31 August 1990 weeks before he was shot in the spine
He went on to lead the CDU in 1998, until Angela Merkel took over in 2000 in the middle of a party donations scandal.

On becoming Germany’s chancellor in 2005, she appointed him first as interior minister then later as finance minister, where he spent eight years focused on balancing the German budget.

He achieved Germany’s so-called schwarze Null or black zero budget deficit in 2014 and he was widely viewed as the driving force behind the austerity policies adopted by the eurozone in response to the debt crisis that began in 2008.

“Greece’s debt crisis and the crises it generated offer a clear warning to European policymakers not to allow public debt to pile up indefinitely,” he told the European Parliament in 2011.

His no-nonsense approach to the eurozone crisis led him to proposing a Greek “time-out” from the euro, although that was rejected by Athens.

As Greece took on three international bail-out loans, taxes rose, salaries and pensions were slashed and unemployment soared.

Leaving government in 2017, Schäuble became president of the Bundestag. He was its longest-serving MP, winning 14 constituency elections.

In a speech to the European Parliament four years ago, Wolfgang Schäuble said that without European unification, east and west, there would have been no German reunification, and he warned that the “rules-based international order was under pressure”.

He withdrew from frontline politics only last year.

Sarkodie reignites feud with ex-girlfriend Yvonne Nelson

Just when it seemed that the rift between Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie and his former girlfriend, actress Yvonne Nelson, had subsided, a surprising revelation has reignited the controversy.

At Sarkodie’s recent Rapperholic Concert, he chose to perform the diss track he created in response to her book, “I AM NOT YVONNE NELSON.”

The book delves into her relationship with Sarkodie, exploring the romantic entanglements and controversies that ensued.

Social media went crazy after learning this information. Yvonne Nelson, however, posted a mysterious message on X, the former Twitter, following his performance.

In addition to defending his son, the well-known figure in the media denied allegations that he was a lousy father.

Renowned broadcaster Kwesi Kyei Darkwah, popularly known as KKD, has come to the defense of his son, Kwaku Kyei Darkwah, against online insults.

KKD emphasized that Kwaku is an independent adult who can make choices about his life.

Despite criticisms, KKD highlighted his son’s success in the fashion industry, working with major international brands, and urged people to reconsider their judgments before condemning him.

“I have only two children and they are all doing well for themselves. Even the one they are criticizing is an adult and I cannot tell him what to do with his life. He is doing well for himself; he is making lots of money. If you love him, call him and talk to him. But if you sit on social media, insult him, and even insult me in the process, think about your poverty-stricken self.

“Pardon me, but some of you critics even struggle with goats over weeds. I have looked after my son and he is living his life. If you know him, call and advise him but if you don’t this doesn’t concern you,” he stated during a discussion on PowerFM.

To buttress his points, KKD listed some of his son’s achievements highlighted below:

He has worked with the popular high fashion brand, Givenchy

To counter the perception that his son is not successful, KKD revealed that his son had served as a luxury consultant for Givenchy.

He has also worked with the astute designer fashion brand, Tom Ford

KKD revealed that his son had previously served as a PR manager for the well-known American clothing and perfume brand, Tom Ford.

He speaks for major co-operations in the US and makes a lot of money

I now agree with why my parents disapproved my marriage to a Ghanaian – American based in Ghana

An American who moved to Ghana with her parents and siblings a decade ago, Yaa Baby, shares her understanding of her parents’ disapproval of her marriage to a Ghanaian.

Despite their refusal to attend the wedding, Yaa Baby, who chose to stay in Ghana for love, acknowledges her parents’ opposition to her relationship with Kofi Awuah, a Ghanaian video director.

“My parents left Ghana after a decade. My siblings left with them but I didn’t. I didn’t go back because of my husband. You can put the blame on love,” she told Deloris Frimpong Manso.

Despite the strong opposition, Yaa Baby decided to wed Kofi Awuah in 2016, and she hasn’t looked back as she enjoys her new life together.

Yaa Baby, real name Chloe, responded that she thought her parents wanted the best for her when asked how it made her feel that they couldn’t attend her wedding.

“They wanted to protect their daughter,” she said on The Delay Show monitored by GhanaWeb. “Now, I’m a mother so I’ve understood some things from their side. It will help me. While I raise my children, as she grows, I’ll know how to handle certain things with her, so, it happens for a reason. I don’t think I wished I changed; it made me who I am.”

Yaa Baby gave a detailed account of how she first got to know Kofi Awuah, saying, “I’ve known him for about 16 years.” Although we weren’t close, I knew him. I was aware of his residence, as well as his parents and siblings.

“It took time before I fell in love with him. Marriage wasn’t part of my initial plans. It just came naturally. We’re not just in a relationship; he’s my best friend. We were friends and one thing led to the other. I believe it was God’s plan.”

Why her parents did not support her decision to marry Kofi Awuah

In the interview that aired on January 22, 2023, Yaa Baby claimed that her parents had rejected her decision to marry Kofi Awuah because of false stories that had been spread by her best friend and church members about the Ghanaian.

Yaa Baby and Kofi are parents to a boy and a girl. She has acted in several TV shows and commercials.

Dada Hafco reflects on social media’s dual role in the music industry

Ghanaian Highlife artiste Terry Asare Boamah, popularly known as Dada Hafco, shared his perspective on the impact of social media, describing it as both a blessing and a curse.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Abrantepa, he highlighted the significant role social media plays in fostering growth within the music industry.

Dada Hafco acknowledged the positive aspects of social media, particularly its role in promoting an artist’s music and facilitating outreach to a broader audience.

However, he also delved into the drawbacks, emphasizing how the landscape has evolved.

Unlike the past when artists could track the number of records sold, the current reliance on streaming services poses challenges, making it difficult for artists to earn a sufficient living.

“I would say that social media is a blessing and a curse. It has actually brought the world to our doorsteps but at the same time, it has huge positive impacts and negatively as well. For me as an artiste, it helps in so many ways. It helps in so many words; promoting your music, and reaching a wider audience,” he said.

“A lot of people have also said that it has diminished their business in the sense that back in the day when you were selling records, you are able to know the number of records you sold unlike the streaming platforms when you can’t get like a million dollar from the number of songs you’ve streamed. Profitably yes, we are using it but there are a few bad nuts that are coming out of social media. People are using it for a lot of wrong reasons like scamming,” he added.

With the release of their song “Puupuu,” Hafco is warning people not to fall for the seduction of the ostentatious lifestyles that are portrayed on social media. He emphasizes that people who give these images too much attention run the risk of being misled by them and experiencing needless pressure.

Daniel Duncan-Williams returns from rehab after impact of Marijuana

Daniel, widely known as Dee Wills and the son of Arch-bishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has revealed the reasons behind his six-month hiatus. He shared that he has recently emerged from rehab after grappling with the destructive impact of marijuana on his life.

In his disclosure, Dee Wills expressed the profound effects of marijuana addiction, emphasizing how it nearly led to the deterioration of his mental health and sanity.

“The reason you haven’t been seeing me for the past six months is because I have been working on myself and I sent myself to rehab. Six months ago, I realized that I have a problem. I realized that I wasn’t thinking or processing well and my mind was just absolutely messed up due to marijuana,” he established.

Daniel, the last son of Action Chapel’s founder, announced his return on social media, saying that despite the difficult journey, it has been worthwhile.

“Going through the process is being a rough road but I managed. I went to my dad’s rehab, compassion, in Prampram Ghana. It wasn’t the easiest thing but thank God, I’ve got my mind back. So, I want to promise you my family that this new road I’ve taken is my new lifestyle and I am going to stick with it. Dee Wills, Daniel -Williams is back. Thank you,” he added.

    Daniel Duncan-Williams’ struggles

Daniel, widely known as Dee Wills, has found himself entangled in a string of controversies, notably marked by a highly publicized social media meltdown on platforms like Twitter and Snapchat.

In previous instances on social media, Daniel openly accused his father of being a demon, alleging that the police were paid to arrest him when he threatened to leave their home. Additionally, he shared explicit videos involving himself in intimate acts with women, among other provocative content.

By early June, Daniel made further claims, asserting that his father did not support his rap career and had consequently severed financial ties with him. He defended the release of nude videos as a means of staying authentic to himself and connecting with his fans.

    U-turn

After the several scandals, Daniel rendered a public apology to his father.

He had since been spotted severally preaching to his peers on social media, asking them to abstain from drugs and other vices.

    Bipolar

In response to several of Daniel Duncan-Williams’s viral video posts, his family released a statement on June 9, 2020, stating that their son has been fighting bipolar disorder for the previous six years.

The statement claims that when he doesn’t take his prescribed medicine as directed, he relapses and posts offensive content on social media.

The Archbishop released a statement through his spokesperson, Bishop Ebenezer Obodai, saying while the family acknowledges that “the obscenities are abhorrent” people must “understand that he (Daniel) has a serious illness”.

After disclosing that his son had acute bipolar disorder, he called the police to see how Daniel was doing during his “meltdown.”

The family asked Ghanaians and others to offer prayers for them as they pursue medical assistance for him.

“The Archbishop said, “This is a test of his faith. I acknowledge the situation my son is in, and I still love him…please pray for us…. Love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8.”

Renowned sound engineer and music producer, Zapp Mallet, issues an apology for remarks made during Afua Asantewaa Aduonum’s ongoing singathon challenge.

According to GhanaWeb, Zapp Mallet faced backlash from social media users for expressing negative comments about Afua Asantewaa.

Known for his expertise in music, Zapp Mallet provided critiques on Asantewaa’s voice and other aspects of the challenge.

Despite some Ghanaians rallying support for the journalist and entrepreneur, the music producer suggested that Afua Asantewaa might not achieve her goal of singing non-stop for three days.

In response to the criticism received, Zapp Mallet has now offered an apology.

He said: “Even professional singers won’t attempt a feat like this without a voice coach around to be coaching what to do. No strategy. Just play, I will sing. I feel for Afua paa. Herrhh! Find some heavy to eat. Singing is for the strong. Don’t let deceive you. Now you see you can’t even hit the key? So off-key. All bcos you tire. Smh. Where are our “famed” voice coaches? The girl is damn tired and she’s losing her voice. Won’t somebody show her how to revamp it? With the way she’s singing? Smh”.

  • Galal Yousif’s art reflects escape and loss amid Sudan’s conflict

Galal Yousif’s art reflects escape and loss amid Sudan’s conflict

Renowned artist Galal Yousif successfully fled Sudan as conflict erupted earlier this year, carrying only a small backpack with a few essential belongings.

Capturing the turmoil of his journey, Yousif immortalized the experience in his painting “Man With a Heavy Heart.”

Originally created as a mural in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Yousif arrived after a challenging journey in June, the painting has now been recreated on canvas in Kenya, where he has found temporary refuge.

The artwork depicts a powerful image of a man with a hand over his heart, surrounded by large circular red dots reminiscent of gunshot wounds.

A moon shines behind his head, and on the ground lies the backpack, symbolizing the profound losses experienced by the Sudanese people during the eight-month conflict.

Notably, the car key he initially packed serves as a poignant reminder of a hopeful return that never materialized.

In the heart of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, artist Galal Yousif invites me into his home, which doubles as his studio, and shares the profound sentiment behind his creations. “I paint my pain,” he confides, unveiling his mission to transform personal experiences into a collective visual narrative that vividly portrays the extensive losses endured by many in war-torn Sudan.

His art serves as a poignant commentary on the toll of what he describes as a “useless war” that has claimed numerous lives. The conflict erupted in April, stemming from a dispute between two generals in the ruling junta—escalating into a clash between the army and the formidable paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The United Nations reports that approximately seven million people have been displaced from their homes due to the ongoing fighting.

Yousif recounts the ominous onset of the conflict, which he first sensed while working late in his studio near Sudan’s presidential palace. The fateful night of April 15 saw the gathering of troops nearby, prompting his decision to drive back to his family’s home in the northern part of Khartoum. He arrived just before dawn, narrowly escaping the outbreak of fighting that ensued shortly after his return.

In his dual role as an artist and storyteller, Galal Yousif aims to capture the shared experiences of loss and upheaval, offering viewers a powerful reflection on the impact of conflict on the lives of the Sudanese people.

“Chaotic days” followed, he says, as there was no water, electricity and little food – and he struggled to care for his elderly aunt and uncle and other relatives.

Every night he heard the sounds of planes and gunfire and could see large plumes of smoke descending over the city – prompting him to take the decision to leave.

He hoped it was a temporary move – managing to get bus tickets for all the family to head to their ancestral home in the city of Rufa’ah – around 150km (93 miles) south-east of Khartoum.

As the situation deteriorated and with his relatives too frail to travel further, Yousif realised that as a well-established artist he could do more to support them if he headed to Nairobi. So he set off with his backpack on public transport to Metemma, a town on the border with Ethiopia where thousands of people were heading.

A month later he managed to get a flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi where he has found a community of other Sudanese artists who had also fled the once-thriving art scene in Khartoum.

According to Khartoum art curator Rahiem Shadad, around 35 of these artists are now in the Kenyan capital, including other big names like Bakri Moaz, Yasir Algari and Hani Khalil Jawdat. Others have settled in Cairo.

Mr Shadad, who owns Khartoum’s Downtown Gallery, representing many esteemed contemporary artists, tells the BBC his art space now lies in ruins.

A vast amount of artwork, including at least 165 framed paintings and 300 other pieces belonging to 60 artists, has also been lost, he says.

In recent months, the curator, who is also in Nairobi, has spearheaded numerous exhibitions of Sudanese art in the city.

He recently set up The Rest, a space for those in exile to live and work, with support from Nairobi’s GoDown Arts Centre.

Despite this warm welcome by Kenya’s art community, life is difficult for the Sudanese artists because of issues around asylum, lack of documents and their lack of substantial incomes.

“Some of these artists came with just $100 [£80] in their pockets,” Mr Shadad says.

Many of them are also deeply traumatised by their experience and losing their entire catalogue.

“Emotionally and spiritually, I am not OK,” artist Tibian Bahari tells me about not being able to return to Sudan where her father and sister still live.

Tibian Bahari in front of one of her works in Nairobi, Kenya - September 2023
Image caption,Tibian Bahari, seen here at an Alliance Française exhibition in Nairobi, wants to keep the spirit and culture of Sudan alive through her art

Her aim is to keep Sudan – a “sacred and magical land” – alive through her work, which currently centres around depicting the country’s topography.

This determination comes down to her clothing.

“I always wear my jalabiya every morning,” she says, referring to the ankle-length, loose-fitting robe with wide long sleeves worn by both men and women in Sudan.

She feels a deep sense of “responsibility” to share “truthfully” her journey and map out the art of displacement and especially keep a space for Sudan’s women artists.

Many artists were part of the civilian protest movement that prompted the overthrow of Sudan’s long-time leader Omar al-Bashir in 2019. Afterwards, the army initially entered into a power-sharing arrangement with civilian groups, before seizing power and the decent into war.

These artists feel their dreams have been crushed by the conflict – and that the world has forgotten them in the wake of the conflict in Gaza.

In the last week, fighting has escalated. Yousif’s family has been under attack by the RSF in Rufa’ah.

Before the phone lines went down, he heard that his family, including his aunt, uncle and some of his siblings, had been forced out of their home by the RSF. They had managed to seek shelter at his grandmother’s house in city centre.

“For the second time, my family has lost our home, first in Khartoum and now in Rufa’ah,” he says, describing a city under siege.

“Nobody can go out,” he says, adding that they are virtually prisoners unable to move around or flee.

Like his painting, Yousif feels his heart continues to bleed.

Daddy Lumba reveals emotional struggle to perform mother’s tribute

One of the most fascinating interviews with Daddy Lumba took place in March, and some major stories came out of it.

Among the many things he revealed was the fact that he wrote the well-known song “Theresa” in memory of his late mother.

    Read the full details below

Ama Esah is a song that Daddy Lumba wrote in memory of his late mother. The legendary Ghanaian highlife singer has admitted that he can’t sing certain of his songs live.

Lumba claims that he is unable to perform songs to which he has a strong emotional connection. Ama Esah is one such song that he wrote especially in memory of his late mother.

“Those close to me know that I am very emotional, so, I have a lot of songs such as one that I composed for my mother, Ama Esah, that I can’t perform on stage even if you kill me. Because if I sing it, I would be compelled to stop and leave the stage,” Lumba said in a recent interview shared via his YouTube page.

The legendary musician revealed this information while discussing the inspiration behind “Theresa Abebrese,” one of his hit songs.

Lumba claims that one of the songs he can’t sing live because of the feelings it arouses is one honoring his first love, Nana Konadu, also known as Theresa Abebrese.

“Looking at how pretty, how empathetic and how smart she was and knowing that a woman of Theresa’s calibre is no longer in this world, I feel pained whenever I play the song. I’ve never been able to perform it on stage before, but I will do well to perform it one day in her honour,” he stated.

  • South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun who starred in Parasite dead

South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun who starred in Parasite dead

The renowned South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, celebrated for his role in the Academy Award-winning movie “Parasite,” has tragically passed away.

At the age of 48, Lee was discovered unresponsive in his vehicle, located in a prominent park in Seoul, on a Wednesday.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain uncertain. However, it has been reported that Lee left a note before leaving his residence, leading to speculations about the nature of his death.

Lee had been the subject of an investigation concerning alleged drug use since October.

In the critically acclaimed film “Parasite,” Lee portrayed the head of the affluent Park family, which becomes the target of a scheme by a destitute family who infiltrate their household under false identities. This darkly comedic critique of social class disparities earned “Parasite” multiple Oscars, including Best Picture.

According to reports from Yonhap news agency, Lee was under suspicion for consuming substances like marijuana and ketamine. These were reportedly provided by a hostess at a bar in Seoul. Lee maintained that he was unaware of the illegal nature of these substances.

This hostess allegedly informed police that Lee had used drugs multiple times at her residence, a claim Lee refuted. He had even requested a lie detector test through his legal representation to support his denial.

The results of Lee’s drug tests were either negative or inconclusive, adding complexity to the case.

Police expressed their regret over Lee’s death occurring amidst the ongoing investigation. They clarified that the inquiry had been proceeding with Lee’s cooperation, as reported by News1 Korea.

Yonhap news agency detailed that Lee had been subjected to three interrogation sessions, with the last one, conducted on the previous Saturday, extending for 19 hours.

It’s so sad,” another commenter said.

The actor, who was married to actress Jeon Hye-jin and had two young sons with her, had a career spanning more than two decades.

The late Lee Sun-kyun, who gained widespread recognition through his lead roles in numerous films and TV shows, reached international stardom with his captivating performance in “Parasite,” a groundbreaking achievement that marked the first non-English language film to secure the Best Picture Oscar.

Throughout the 2010s, Lee became a household name, with his acting prowess and versatility earning him acclaim. However, his career took a sudden turn amid allegations of drug use, tarnishing the squeaky-clean, family-man image he had maintained.

In South Korea, celebrities are subject to high standards of propriety, and Lee’s alleged involvement in drug-related activities had a significant impact on his reputation. The fallout was evident when he was dropped from “No Way Out,” a mystery TV series already in production since October.

Reports indicated that businesses swiftly removed posters and advertisements featuring Lee from their establishments, underscoring the repercussions of such scandals on the public image of South Korean celebrities.

Drug offenses, particularly those involving marijuana, are treated seriously in South Korea. The country imposes strict penalties, including potential prison sentences of up to five years for marijuana consumption. President Yoon Suk Yeol has pledged a stringent crackdown on drugs, with the authorities bolstering the drug crimes department and the national police chief declaring “a total war” on drug-related activities earlier in the year.

Lee is not the only South Korean celebrity who had been investigated for drug use recently. Earlier this month, K-pop star G-Dragon was cleared of drug allegations after weeks of investigations.

Actor Yoo Ah-in is currently standing trial for drug use.

Prophet Oracle confesses to sacrificing family members for spiritual powers

In a shocking revelation, Prophet Oracle, born Nana Nketia and the leader of King House Chapel, has admitted to sacrificing members of his own family to gain spiritual powers.

According to Prophet Oracle, his journey began when a spiritualist took him under his wing for 22 years. During this period, he was nurtured by the spiritualist and his army of over 7,000 dwarfs.

The turning point came when the spiritualist, who was 170 years old at the time, prepared to leave the earthly realm to reside permanently under the sea.

This impending departure necessitated the selection of a new leader for the dwarfs, and Prophet Oracle was chosen as the successor.

However, this leadership role came with a grim requirement: the sacrifice of seven people within a 17-day deadline.

Prophet Oracle disclosed that he chose to sacrifice his father, elder brother, his brother’s wife, and their son, driven by a deep-seated hatred for his father and elder brother.

This disturbing confession, highlighting the depths of his involvement in spiritual rituals and the tragic consequences it brought upon his family, is further elaborated in the video below.

Plane with Indian nationals, detained in France, arrives in India

A plane carrying hundreds of Indian nationals who were held for days at an airport in France over human trafficking fears has arrived in India.

The chartered Airbus A340, which had been flying from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Nicaragua, aroused suspicion during a refuelling stop.

It left with 276 passengers but 25 people including two minors remained in France after applying for asylum.

Two suspected traffickers also remain in France for further investigation.

However the two were set free by the courts.

The Legend Airlines flight landed in Mumbai early on Tuesday local time.

Photos shared by news agency ANI show several passengers sitting on plastic chairs at the Mumbai airport after the flight landed. Some of the passengers could be seen leaving the airport but BBC Marathi reports that most of them refused to answer questions from the media.

The plane had initially been prevented from leaving Châlons-Vatry Airport, about 130km (81 miles) from Paris, on Thursday after authorities received an anonymous tip-off that some passengers might be “victims of human trafficking”, Parisian prosecutors say.

Most of those aboard were believed to be Indian citizens working in the UAE. A third of the passengers are reported to be from India’s affluent western state of Gujarat.

French authorities reportedly also suspected that the people on board might have been travelling to Nicaragua before attempting to enter the US or Canada.

It was not clear whether authorities had definitively determined that no crime had been committed before allowing the plane to leave.

It is also unclear why the flight went to Mumbai instead of resuming its journey to Nicaragua.

Legend Airlines is a Romanian charter airline with a fleet of four planes, according to the online flight tracker Flightradar.

Sekyere East Health Directorate calls on public collaboration to fight neglected tropical diseases

The Sekyere East District Health Directorate is calling upon the public, particularly residents in the district, to join forces in addressing the escalating cases of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

Dr. Justice Ofori Amoah, the District Director of Health Services for Ghana Health Services, highlighted the pressing need for external support to effectively control and manage these cases.

During the launch of the campaign against Neglected Tropical Diseases in Effiduase, Ashanti region, Dr. Amoah emphasized that factors such as shyness, ignorance, economic challenges, and spiritual beliefs contribute to residents not reporting NTD cases at health facilities.

“We need to continue to look for the diseases for case management,” Dr. Amoah said.

The designation ‘neglected’ is utilized due to the predominant impact of these diseases on underserved and marginalized individuals who encounter barriers to basic services and possess limited political influence. As a result, these diseases are often neglected in both domestic and global health agendas, experiencing reduced political prioritization and resource allocation.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) constitute a group of twenty viral, parasitic, and bacterial diseases, predominantly affecting over one billion individuals within the world’s most marginalized populations.

According to Chief Biomedical Scientist at the Neglected Tropical Disease Programme, Edward Tei Hervie, “Ghana has 14 NTDS and every district in the country has at least two of the disease.”

Within this year, the Sekyere East District has documented 2,471 cases of scabies, 22 instances of lymphatic filariasis, 55 cases of yaws, and 5 cases of leprosy. Regrettably, 7 deaths among children have been attributed to rabies cases.

Emphasizing the significance of promptly reporting suspected cases, he highlighted the crucial role it plays in effective control and management.

“We are emphasizing that residents should report cases to the nearest facility,” he stated.

In the last three years, Dr. Justice observes that the numbers have been increasing, attributed to the case search carried out by the directorate, with support from World Vision and the Women’s Hope Foundation.

“The more we search, the more we discover, indicating that the cases are present in the communities. Therefore, our best course of action is to actively engage with the people and encourage them to report any suspected cases,” he emphasized.

“The more we search, the more we discover, indicating that the cases are present in the communities. Therefore, our best course of action is to actively engage with the people and encourage them to report any suspected cases,” he emphasized.

The occurrence of these diseases has negatively affected the economic and social well-being of residents, with school-going children and farmers being particularly impacted.

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for the Effiduase/Asokore constituency, who initiated the campaign, has pledged support from his office to assist the district health services in overseeing and addressing the situation.

He said, “The diseases are preventable and can be treated. Capacity building for health personnel is crucial. So, I have looked for the money for all this.”

Chiefs, opinion leaders, politicians, teachers, and residents are urged to collaborate with the health directorate in identifying, treating, and monitoring cases of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

This call to action was underscored by Dr. Justice Thomas Sevugu, the Municipal Director of Health Service for Atwima Nwabiagya and the National Chairman for the District Directors Group.

The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for five fundamental strategic interventions to accelerate the prevention, control, elimination, and eradication of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

These interventions encompass innovative and intensified disease management, preventive chemotherapy, vector control, veterinary public health, and the provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.

When he doesn’t trust you, they take your phone. We’ll talk about that later, properly. After he eats his fave jollof and fried egg. Around Teshie/Nungua.”

Wale openly confessed to his past involvement as a fraudster, claiming to have accumulated significant wealth from it. The dancehall king made this startling admission during his Christmas concert while engaging in a competitive comparison with Stonebwoy and Sarkodie.

Shatta Wale boldly asserted his financial superiority over Stonebwoy and Sarkodie, citing his past involvement in fraud as the reason for his wealth.

Wale questioned his fans if they had ever heard of Stonebwoy or Sarkodie being linked to internet fraud, insinuating that his past involvement allowed him to amass more wealth than they could ever imagine.

This admission appears imprudent, especially considering Shatta Wale’s close association with Hajia, who is currently facing fraud charges in the United States.

Russia verifies a warship’s wreckage in the Black Sea

In a Tuesday morning airstrike at Feodosiya in Russian-occupied Crimea, the Ministry of Defence reports the large landing ship Novocherkassk damaged by Ukrainian aircraft with guided missiles.

Ukrainian Air Force claims warplanes destroyed the ship. One fatality and several injuries reported, with six buildings damaged.

Port’s transport operations are reportedly normal after cordoned-off area and contained fire.

Footage purportedly showing a huge explosion in the port was shared by Ukrainian air force commander Lt Gen Mykola Oleshchuk.

The images have not been independently verified. However, satellite imagery from 24 December shows a ship at port in Feodosiya that appears to be the same length as the Novocherkassk – a landing ship designed to transport troops, weapons and cargo to shore.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Ukraine’s air force has denied that Russia shot down two of its Su-24 bombers about 125km (77 miles) from the occupied Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv.

It has also recently denied a claim by Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu that his troops have seized the key town of Mariinka in eastern Ukraine.

The area has been used by Ukraine as a defensive barrier since 2014, when Russian-backed fighters seized large swathes of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

A file image of the Novocherkassk warship
Image caption,Russia says the Novocherkassk was damaged, while Ukraine says it was destroyed (file image)

Tuesday’s attack on Feodosiya is not the first time that the Novocherkassk has been targeted by Ukrainian forces.

In March 2022, Ukraine’s defence ministry reported that the ship had been damaged in an attack on the occupied Ukrainian port of Berdyansk in which another amphibious assault ship, the Saratov, was sunk.

In a post on Telegram, Lt Gen Oleshchuk wrote that the Novocherkassk had gone the way of the Moskva – the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, which sank in the Black Sea last year.

Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelensky quipped that he was “grateful” to the country’s air force “for the impressive replenishment of the Russian submarine Black Sea fleet with another vessel,” in reference to other Russian ships that have been sunk during the war.

“The occupiers will not have a single peaceful place in Ukraine,” he said.

Russia seized and annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and its forces based there played a key part in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Russian forces in Crimea have since come under repeated Ukrainian attack. Last month, Ukraine’s military said it had destroyed 15 Russian navy ships and damaged another 12 in the Black Sea since the start of Russia’s war.

After a missile strike on the headquarters of the Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol last September, satellite images showed that the Russian navy had moved much of its Black Sea fleet away from Crimea to the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.

  • Forgotten Spanish-Moroccan love letters that never reached their intended recipients

Forgotten Spanish-Moroccan love letters that never reached their intended recipients

Trash letters from Spanish women to Moroccan men written decades ago expose a history of forbidden topics during the colonial period.

“When will you come back to Spain?” The desperate-sounding plea had been carefully written out on the page, a sign of how important it was for Carmela.

“Tell me that you are not looking at any other women,” she wrote from Granada in 1944.

However, the man for whom these words were meant was never able to read them. Carmela’s love letter from overseas did not reach its intended destination in Morocco.

Instead, it found itself concealed in the depths of the Spanish archives, within an unexpected trove of hundreds of passionate messages exchanged between Spanish women and Moroccan men.

Confiscated during the 1930s to the 1950s, these letters document clandestine romantic relationships.

For decades, the colonial authorities of the Spanish protectorate in Morocco methodically confiscated this correspondence.

The boxes overflow with expressions of love: “I am crazy for you… I am like a goat for you,” writes a woman from Valencia.

Some letters include photographs, featuring dozens of women with meticulously styled hairdos, offering glimpses of their appearance to distant lovers. One woman sent a picture of herself riding a bicycle, a candid snapshot of everyday life.

Conscientious bureaucrats filed these letters neatly into envelopes, where they were then forgotten among routine administrative documents, gathering dust until discovered and published by academics Josep Lluís Mateo Dieste and Nieves Muriel García.

Each letter provides a tantalizing glimpse into an entire relationship, shedding light on the repression faced by these connections.

Spanish officials employed various measures to thwart such relationships.

A 1937 directive stated, “As a general rule, marriages between Moroccan soldiers and Spanish women must be prevented.”

Since 1912, Spain had asserted sovereignty over a portion of Morocco as a protectorate, dividing the nation with France.

Resistance from the Berber community, notably during the protracted and brutal Rif War (1921-1926), challenged this claim, resulting in the Spanish army’s defeat by forces led by Abdelkrim al-Khattabi.

To address this, the Spanish government bolstered its troops in Morocco and enlisted thousands of Moroccans into its army.

By the 1930s, a substantial strip along the north of the country was effectively administered by Spain, with its capital in Tetouan. In 1936, General Francisco Franco, based in this territory, initiated a coup against the Republican government, marking the start of the Spanish Civil War.

In 1948, a letter was intercepted between Carmen from Zaragoza to her lover Abdeselam in Morocco. The authorities in Tetouan immediately banned both from crossing to the opposite side.

In the letter, Carmen gave news of their daughter, who would now grow up without ever seeing her father. The officials did not take the child into consideration.

Why did they regard these relationships with such contempt?

Part of the answer lies in the dictatorship’s reactionary ideology.

Franco’s government was aggressively misogynistic, rigidly controlling the mobility of women and restricting their access to employment.

It also saw itself as a defender of Catholicism, and for religious reasons, women who married Muslim men were seen as “lost to the faith”.

But the biggest single reason was what officials called “prestigio de raza”, “the prestige of the race”.

For colonial rule to continue, Spain had to be seen as superior to Morocco.

As the government understood marriage to be the subordination of a woman by a man, any marriage across the colonial divide would make a Spanish woman subservient to a Moroccan man.

If this came to be known, it would undermine the very basis of colonial domination.

By contrast, relationships between Spanish men and Moroccan women, which were plentiful in the protectorate, did not attract such extensive scrutiny and censorship as they reproduced the larger power structure of society on an intimate scale without threatening it.

This was not specific to Spain: the fear of European women entering into relationships with colonised men was common across all European colonial administrations.

In the neighbouring French zone, officials expressed similar disapproval for the political consequences of these relationships.

The Dutch in the East Indies and the British in India saw relationships between European women and colonised men as much more threatening than the reverse, and policed them accordingly.

While the range of measures to discourage these relationships went from disapproval to outright bans, the underlying rule was the same: such relationships were a threat.

These letters, however, reveal that beneath the surface of colonial society, encounters were common and led to a whole range of relationships: friendships, courtships, sexual encounters and marriages.

Opening them is thrilling – a window into lives that official documents rarely tell us about. But it is also unsettling – most letters never made it to their destination. It feels like an invasion of privacy, as these people never chose to be included in this archive.

When Morocco became independent in 1956, the protectorate government in Tetouan shut down and its archives were mostly forgotten.

They ended up mostly near Madrid, in the central archives of the administration in the university town of Alcalá de Henares where – like most of Spain’s colonial history in Africa – they were forgotten.

But despite the recent publication of some of these letters, their stories remain poorly known, and this long-forgotten archive has not yet revealed all of its secrets.

  • Here are 4 tricks that leads a woman to have orgasm without penetration

Here are 4 tricks that leads a woman to have orgasm without penetration

Ever thought about exploring alternatives to penetration for intimate experiences?

Society often presents sex as solely a man-woman interaction, predominantly involving vaginal or penetrative acts.

However, there are numerous ways to achieve orgasm without relying on vaginal sex.

While vaginal intercourse may be satisfying for some, it’s not a prerequisite for orgasmic experiences. As certain penetration positions may not consistently stimulate the clitoris, it’s beneficial to consider other methods that involve skill and finesse.

Here are some alternatives to explore:

    Oral sex

Experiencing oral pleasure can be more intense than genital intercourse due to the giver’s increased control, the ability to vary sensations, and a heightened focus on specific areas.

Tongues serve as dynamic tools for pleasure, offering distinct sensations based on their shape—whether pointed or flat—resulting in a range of satisfying experiences on a vulva.

The versatility of oral sex presents numerous dimensions, and the exploration with your partner can continually improve over time as you both experiment.

    Fingering

To some people, fingering is just the pre-show to the main event.

Well, it’s not always the case, as having your partner explore your vulva and vagina with their fingers can be intense, erotic and can create a whole pleasurable moment.

A couple can spice up their ‘fingering game’ by trying out some light BDSM-style play.

For example, have your partner blindfold you or lightly tie your hands behind your back, so they can focus exclusively on working their hands down there.

Once she is sufficiently aroused, you can take two fingers and gently push them into her vagina. You can use the tips of your fingers to stimulate her G-spot (on the front wall of her vagina, the area facing her abdomen) or her A-spot (towards her spine).

Note that a woman’s vagina area should be well lubricated, if not, consider using a lubricant for this purpose.

    Role Play

Role play is a great way to experiment with different fantasies in the bedroom because it allows you to tap into the incredible erotic power of your brain.

It can start small, and you don’t need any special costumes.

When it comes to hot, steamy sex, your brain is your biggest pleasure organ, and the more creative ways you use it, the more creative ways you can come up with an amazing path to orgasm without penetration required.

    Add some toys

A stronger orgasm can be experienced by pressing a vibrator up against your clitoris, and while playing with toys alone may seem a bit solitary, doing so with a partner can be unexpectedly sensual.

You can let your partner take charge and decide how hard, quickly, and where to press the toy.

Abrantie the Gentleman faces setback as employee vanishes before Milan Show

Fashion designer ‘Abrantie the Gentleman,’ Oheneba Yaw Boamah, disclosed that a trusted employee disappeared before a Milan show.

Boamah, speaking on Joy Learning TV’s Career Trail, mentioned inviting two models and a reliable tailor to join him for a fashion event in Milan.

Despite covering their travel expenses, the tailor he trusted failed to show up upon their arrival in Milan.

“Could you believe this was a tailor that I trusted so much? I wanted to set an example for my other workers. I took all expenses, paid for this tailor, we got to Milan and he just vanished. I couldn’t see him again,” he lamented.

Abrantie remembers that he suffered a severe setback as a result of the tailor’s actions, missing his flight back to Ghana.

“We were supposed to find ways and means to pay to get back to Ghana,” he explained bitterly.

Given that he was speaking on behalf of Ghana and showcasing designs at the event, the fashion designer acknowledges that this incident has been one of his low points as a designer.

According to Abrantie, there were those who had the misconception that he had planned the incident.

“Imagine you being invited; it was a very big programme, Expo Milan. It was a very huge organisation. They were thinking you came with all these people just to come and do this and it was all planned. I got to Milan and there were giant billboards of me mounted in Milan.”

“That was how huge it was. There were paparazzi too. So after the paparazzi one of the people just sneaked out and these same people doing the paparazzi think everything was planned”, he stated.

Black Stars player Agyemang Badu, who was in Italy at the time of the incident and assisted in arranging this return trip to Ghana, received a thank you from Abrantie.
