NPP firmly rejects proposal to shield experienced MPs in primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) dismisses proposals to protect seasoned Members of Parliament (MPs) in the upcoming primaries, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values.

The response follows comments by Kwame Ayimadu-Antwi, MP for Asante Akim Central, expressing dissatisfaction with the party’s perceived lack of support for experienced lawmakers.

While NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, acknowledges the worth of considering measures to safeguard experienced MPs, he underscores the need for careful evaluation to prevent compromising the democratic foundations of party primaries.

“The allegation that somebody is orchestrating somebody, that is just talk for people because maybe one thing is against them or the other. That should not be part of the conversation. But is it the expectation that the party should create a certain system? I think that I agree but my worry about that suggestion is what system is it and to what extent is it going to impact the basic allowance of democracy to prevail,” he remarked.

Further highlighting the potential advantages of open competition, Richard Ahiagbah suggested that it guarantees the selected candidate has the strongest public support and acts as an incentive for performance.

“If it is a system and arrangement that will affect a true and true practice of democracy then that will not be the system we want,” he added.

NCCE urges collective effort to safeguard Ghana’s 4th republican constitution

Eric Adu, the Ahafo Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), advocates for active participation from every Ghanaian in upholding the nation’s constitutional rule, especially as the 2024 general elections approach.

Adu emphasizes that fostering political tolerance and respecting religious diversity, faith, and ethnicity are crucial elements for a successful electoral process.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Goaso, the Ahafo regional capital, Adu underscores the significance of Election 2024 as a key indicator for measuring the strength of the nation’s democracy. He highlights the need to consolidate the gains made in the country’s fledgling democracy, based on the Fourth Republican Constitution.

Adu raises concerns about the increasing prominence of religion and faith in the Election 2024 campaigning, urging vigilance to ensure that no one exploits these aspects to disrupt the nation’s peace.

“The flag-bearers of the two major political parties are affiliated to Islam and Christianity and that depicts the instrumental role religion and faith will play in the next general elections,” Mr Adu stated.

He emphasized that everyone must take precautions against because constitutional rule continues to be the best and most reliable way to enable accelerated national development.

tendencies that have the potential to taint the national general election and undermine the current state of harmony and social cohesion.

Touching on the Commission’s theme for 2024: “Together We Can Build Ghana, So Get Involved”, Mr Adu expressed worry about the rising rate of corruption in the country, which remained the bane of the nation’s economic development.

Eric Adu emphasizes that the monetization of the nation’s politics poses a dual threat to Ghana’s multi-party democracy and hinders the selection of competent leaders for comprehensive development. As the 2024 general election approaches, Adu urges the electorate to publicly condemn politicians and political parties resorting to the use of money and gifts to influence votes.

Expressing concern over the insufficient funding and resources available for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to fulfill its constitutional and civic education mandate, Adu calls for support from corporate bodies and development partners.

Despite this, he underscores that civic education is a collective responsibility and appeals to religious and civil society organizations to actively participate in enlightening the public about their civic rights and responsibilities.

“Daddy one of my classmates said you are a thief, is it true?” – Kwesi Nyantakyi recalls humiliations after Number 12 exposé

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, , shares the distressing moment during the Number 12 exposé when his daughter’s classmate labeled him as a thief.

Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Nyantakyi expresses the emotional impact of the incident as a parent.

“She came to me and said, ‘Daddy one of my classmates said you are a thief, is it true?’ My brother, how will you take that as a parent? Nine-year-old, so you know, that was what was in the media so when they are going to school we tell the driver not to switch on the radio for the children to hear what is going on.

“Not that they were gossiping about it, a classmate came to ask her that I learnt that your daddy is a thief is it true? It’s devastating, so what I told her was maame close your ears to these things. Close your ears, that is somebody’s imagination. It is not true, how can I be a thief? I am not a thief,” Mr. Nyantakyi stated.

He went on to say that because Kennedy Agyapong and Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin defended him, he had grown to respect them.

He claims that he was never in a relationship with Kennedy Agyapong.

“I was disturbed by the negative publicity but I was unperturbed about the truth or otherwise of the matter. I was sure that one day, people will get to know the truth.

“That is why I have developed a certain respect and love for people like Honorable Ken Agyapong. He seemed to be the only person who stood up for me publicly and the Right Honorable Speaker. But you know the interesting thing, I had never met Kennedy Agyapong neither had I spoken to him,” Mr. Nyantakyi narrated.

He continued: “Some people may have thought that I went to place a plea before him to come to my aid. Apart from seeing honorable Kennedy Agyapong on TV and then listening to him on radio, I never had a personal encounter with him. Mr. Speaker I knew him long ago as my senior but I hadn’t met him for more than two decades.”

‘I am not convinced TB Joshua performed fake miracles – Blakk Rasta over BBC documentary

Blakk Rasta expresses skepticism towards allegations of fake miracles against the late TB Joshua, disputing claims made in a BBC documentary.

He points to miracles performed in European and Asian countries, insisting on their authenticity.

Blakk Rasta firmly rejects the notion that TB Joshua’s miracles were fake, opposing the narrative presented in the BBC documentary.

“I will not be convinced if anybody tells me that the miracles that TB Joshua performed were all fake miracles, I wouldn’t believe that. My brother, he [TB Joshua] travelled to Japan. He went all the way to Asia, Europe and even America. Are you telling me that the tens of thousands of people who were seen falling down and vomiting blood all had been paid to do a certain Cantata?

“Are you telling me that even family members who we knew, went to the SCOAN and were allegedly healed of cancer or other dangerous diseases they came home and were healthy, are you telling me that they’re all fake? How about those who just touched the TV and then got healed? How do you explain that? I will not believe that,” he said.

In response to the BBC documentary unveiling reported abuses within the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), led by the late Prophet TB Joshua, Blakk Rasta shares his views.

The documentary delves into sexual abuse, rape allegations, and manipulations of miracles within the SCOAN, sparking varied reactions. Some criticize the prophet, while others question the authenticity of the allegations against the deceased man of God.

Businesswoman faces attempted murder charge in relationship, property dispute

A 36-year-old businesswoman, Nduta Wangai, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to run over her boyfriend’s wife, Rebecca Ngumi, during a dispute over the man and their shared residence. The incident occurred on January 5, 2024, at Ridgeways estate in Starehe Sub-county, Nairobi.

Apart from the attempted murder charge, Wangai also faces an additional count of malicious damage to property, accused of causing damage to Ngumi’s property estimated at one million shillings. The damages include destruction to Ngumi’s gate, garage wall, and her Mercedes Benz vehicle.

The confrontation unfolded when Ngumi, preparing for work, heard someone at her gate. Upon sending her house help to check, Wangai claimed she had come to speak to Ngumi’s husband. Ngumi informed her husband, and as they approached the gate, a disagreement ensued, leading Wangai to drive her car into the gate.

    Run for her safety

The complainant, fearing for her safety, began to run as the suspect reportedly drove straight at her. The suspect, identified as Ms. Wangai, is accused of spraying the complainant with a substance believed to be acid.

Despite several attempts by Wangai to reverse and hit the complainant, she instead damaged Ngumi’s car while the latter sought cover.

Ngumi promptly called the police during the incident, leading to their swift response. The suspect allegedly threatened to kill the complainant and made repeated attempts to run her over before Ngumi found refuge between objects in her compound. However, Wangai fled upon learning that the police had been alerted.

Detective Constable Erastus Matuanga of the Starehe DCI’s office, who had submitted an affidavit opposing bail for the suspect, did not produce it in court. In the affidavit, Matuanga mentioned an ongoing dispute over the house where Ms. Ngumi resides with her husband.

“The accused (Ms Wangai) claims to have contributed to its purchase through the complainant’s (Ms Ngumi’s) husband and instead of seeking legal remedy to solve the matter, decided to use violent ways to claim the same and it is feared that once released on bond, she will pursue the claim through the same means which may even lead to murder”, Matuanga said in the affidavit.

The detective mentioned that the investigation team has yet to obtain statements from crucial witnesses due to their work commitments.

During her appearance before Senior Principal Magistrate Helen Okwani at the Makadara Law Courts, Ms. Wangai denied the charges and requested lenient bail and bond conditions. She, a mother of four children with the youngest being seven years old, was released on a one-million-shilling bond without the option of cash bail.

The case is scheduled for mention on April 9, with the hearing set to commence on July 4. Notably, Ms. Ngumi’s husband is listed as a witness in the case.

Corruption activities out of control in Akufo-Addo’s govt – Mahama

The Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has once again voiced strong criticism against the current administration, accusing it of unchecked and widespread corruption.

Mr. Mahama likened corruption to an unbridled entity running amok throughout the country.

During his tour of the Volta region on Thursday, January 11, Mr. Mahama asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is incapable of eliminating corruption, highlighting the involvement of its members in such malfeasance.

Addressing the crowd in Tegbi, the former president pledged that his administration, if elected, would make concerted efforts to eradicate corruption.

Furthermore, he issued a caution to party members holding positions of authority, emphasizing that he would not shield them if found guilty of corruption.

“Now, corruption has broken loose and if it was in the IGP’s custody, it has broken the jail and is running all over the country. It’s obvious that the NPP has no desire or the ability to check corruption because their people are involved in the corruption, and they cannot deal with it.”

“So I have said if they [the NPP] can’t deal with it when we come, we will deal with it for them. When the NDC comes, we will hold those who have misconducted themselves accountable. But I must also caution our people that those of us who go into positions of authority, if you also abuse your trust, I am not going to come and defend you.”

“We are a listening party, and we believe that power is given to a political party or to leaders to come and serve us. We are not seeking power just to be arrogant and opulent in our attitude. We are seeking power because we want to solve the rightful needs of our people,” he added.

Asenso-Boakye received bribes worth US$20K during his time at the presidency – Ken Agyapong alleges

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, asserts that corruption allegations surrounding his fellow MP for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, are accurate.

Agyapong accuses Asenso-Boakye, who currently serves as the Minister of Housing, of misappropriating funds within his ministry.

Additionally, Agyapong resurrects past reports alleging that Asenso-Boakye had solicited bribes to facilitate access to the president during his tenure as deputy Chief of Staff between 2017 and 2021.

“Today because of president Akufo-Addo, Asenso sits on radio and talks big that if Ken will win (flagbearership), NPP is better off in opposition, is that what power is about? How much money have you stolen from Housing (ministry)?” he asked while addressing NPP delegates in Bantama.

“Even as Deputy Chief of Staff, you were taking bribes of US$20,000, you think the man was not truthful? Ask Kwabena Asante of Adom FM about the Chinese people, a deal I eventually blocked.

“If you recall, I warned the NPP that they were disgracing Nana Akufo-Addo, those at Jubilee House that were taking money to grant access to the president, I was referring to Asenso, today I am telling you,” Agyapong stressed.

He was in Bantama to support his brother Ralph Opoku Agyapong, who is running in the NPP parliamentary primary against Asenso-Boakye. Agyapog threatened to disclose incriminating information about the corrupt activities of the Bantama MP if delegates chose Asenso.

  • Akufo-Addo is planning to hand over “dumsor” to the next govt – Mahama

Akufo-Addo is planning to hand over “dumsor” to the next govt – Mahama

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 election, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed concern that the current government is leading the country back to the era of severe power crises known as “dumsor.”

Various regions in the country have been grappling with inconsistent power cuts, causing frustration and resentment among the populace. Many electricity consumers are dissatisfied with the lack of prior communication and explanations regarding the widespread outages.

The government is facing a financial obligation to the West African Pipeline Company (WAPCo) amounting to $19 million. Deputy Minister of Energy, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, confirmed that $13 million has been settled, leaving an outstanding balance of $6 million.

He reassured that the government is actively engaged in discussions with WAPCo to devise a payment plan for the remaining amount.

Additionally, the recent power outage experienced in parts of the capital, Accra, was attributed to a fuel shortage, as explained by the Deputy Minister for Energy.

During a stakeholder meeting with members of the NDC in Sogakope, Volta Region, as part of his “Building Ghana Tour,” Mr. Mahama anticipated that if the NDC regains power, they will inherit power cuts, a challenge the party had successfully addressed during its previous term in office.

“Today ‘dumsor’, they’re treating it like a football because he wants to kick it over the 7th January 2025 line and hand the trouble over to somebody else, and yet we resolved it before they came into office.”

In order to transfer Value Added Tax (VAT) collected from customers who have exceeded their lifeline power consumption, the government has asked the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to communicate with the two nation’s power distribution companies.

Mr. Mahama denounced this action, claiming that it will put additional strain on customers who already pay more for electricity because of current power taxes.

“Today, they’ve put Value Added Tax on electricity bills. And COVID levy, NHIL levy, GETFUND Levy all on electricity bills, and so that’s going to send the cost of your electricity bill up. Already, there was a 29 per cent increase, there was a 19 per cent increase, then they tried to fool us with a 4% increase, and now it’s going up again astronomically” he lamented.

The tariff increases continue to hurt a lot of businesses.

According to John Mahama, cutting back on government spending might assist in lowering the high taxes that have driven up the cost of goods and services.

“It’s making Ghana a very difficult place to do business. All business people are complaining. The owner of this hotel who has given us this resort to do this thing, you should ask him how much he’s paying in utility bills. And yet, because of the mismanagement by the President and his cousin and his Vice President, it has plunged all of us into a difficult situation where they have pledged to the IMF [International Monetary Fund] to raise as much revenue as they can.”

The key is to cut back on your expenses while you are increasing revenue because that is what any rational, sane person would do. Because you can lessen the burden you’re placing on the taxpayer by cutting back on your expenditures.

“If they cut down the expenditure of the Office of the President; they’ve doubled it. Year-on-year budget went up by 82 billion cedis, and so if you reduce the rise of the budget in terms of expenditure, then you could reduce the incidence of tax. You might not need to place Value Added Tax on electricity, so that you pass the relief on to the people of Ghana” the former President noted.

Meanwhile, the former President has assured that the NDC will restrain itself from starting new projects but focus on completing new ones.

“All the projects that they inherited they have abandoned, and they themselves have started projects that they know they cannot complete. And yet, instead of finishing the abandoned and ongoing projects, they have started news projects like agenda 111, some of them are at foundation level, some they’ve raised the block work, but they know that they cannot finish it before they leave.

“So, what they will do is to push them on to somebody else and say that, we started this and you came and you’ve abandoned it. But look at the mess you’ve created, how are we going to get money to finish all those projects” the former President quizzed.

“But I pledge that we will restrain ourselves from starting new projects. Whatever little resources that we come and meet, we will spend it on completing the ongoing and abandoned projects.”

Mr. Logic changes his mind, now supports John Dumelo for politics

In a remarkable change of stance, Mr. Logic, a prominent figure in entertainment punditry, has redirected his political support from Fred Nuamah to John Dumelo, the well-known actor and politician.

This shift marks a significant turn in his earlier position, where Mr. Logic had shown visible support for Nuamah, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Movie Awards and a notable name in the industry.

Mr. Logic’s initial backing of Nuamah sparked discussions about the blending of entertainment and politics, especially considering Nuamah’s early acceptance of his endorsement.

However, in a surprising reversal of his stance, Mr. Logic has now publicly shifted his allegiance to John Dumelo.

This unexpected development came to light during the year-end episode of UTV’s showbiz night, where Mr. Logic expressed his regret over initially endorsing Fred Nuamah.

He admitted that had he known the ongoing political exchange between Nuamah and Dumelo was actually a strategic move for election momentum, he would have opted for a different, more informed endorsement decision.

This change has piqued the interest of both political and entertainment observers, highlighting the dynamic and unpredictable nature of celebrity endorsements in politics.

“I wouldn’t have backed Fred Nuamah initially if I had known they were using mind games to attract attention. Upon reflecting on my endorsement of Fred and the feedback received from John, I regret throwing my support behind Fred Nuamah. They were manipulating public perception as part of a stunt to build momentum for the upcoming election. Therefore, I retract my initial endorsement of Fred Nuamah. I am now neutral, and both parties can proceed to confront each other without my allegiance.”

Afua Asantewaa desired to sing till sunday but we adviced her not to – Medical Director shares

The Medical Director at Sonotech Medical and Diagnostic Centre and the official physician overseeing Afua Asantewaa’s Guinness World Records’ longest singing marathon attempt, Dr. Grace Buckman, shared insights into the extensive medical preparation and support provided for the event.

In a conversation with Joy FM’s entertainment journalist Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z, Dr. Buckman revealed that her team conducted thorough medical evaluations on Afua prior to the start of the sing-a-thon. She emphasized the involvement of medical experts from diverse specialties who joined forces to ensure Afua’s well-being throughout the event.

Dr. Buckman recalled that despite facing a challenging moment on the second day, where Afua considered quitting, she found renewed motivation and strength to carry on.

Additionally, Dr. Buckman mentioned that while the initial plan was to conclude the event on Thursday, December 28, 2023, Afua expressed her desire to extend the singing marathon to Sunday, December 31, 2023, showcasing her remarkable endurance and commitment.

“The original pan wasn’t for end on yesterday [Friday December 29, 2023] like we did, it was supposed to be the day before [Thursday] so we actually had a meeting with the family, the main players and everything and we had a beautiful exit plan.

“But then in the morning when we were supposed to wrap up, we didn’t know where the energy came from. Now she had a lot of energy and started going on again with the singing and all, so we said let’s allow her for some hours again and see how it goes. But later in the evening again we realised a dip. A lot of fatique had set in; not just physically but mentally as well, so you realised there were dead times when she wasn’t really singing so we wanted to stop at that point but during that time she even said she even wanted to end on Sunday,” she told the host Kwame Dadzie.

Dr. Grace Buckman (Medical Director – Sonotech Medical and Diagnostic Centre)

Dr. Grace Buckman, the Medical Director at Sonotech Medical and Diagnostic Centre overseeing Afua Asantewaa’s Guinness World Records’ longest singing marathon, explained the rationale behind reaching an agreement with Afua to conclude the event earlier than initially planned.

In addressing the challenges faced by Afua during the singing marathon, Dr. Buckman emphasized the toll it took on her body and the medical team’s concerns about potential health issues post-event.

The team, consisting of 26 health practitioners, prioritized both the immediate well-being of Afua and the potential aftermath.

Afua Asantewaa, an event organizer, successfully concluded her Guinness World Record attempt by breaking the record for the longest individual singing marathon at 7:00 am on Friday, December 29, 2023.

The five-day singing marathon began at midnight on Sunday, December 24, 2023, surpassing the 105-hour record set by Indian artist Sunil Waghmare in 2012.

Acknowledging the support from the public, Afua Asantewaa expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to her remarkable feat, whether present at the Akwaaba Village or supporting from afar.

“At a point, I kept asking which day it was, and I finally got to know that today is Friday. On behalf of my family, team, volunteers, the media, and Ghana Tourism Authority, I would like to say thank you to everyone who participated in this attempt; it has been a smooth journey and a very successful one,” she noted.

Later, during an after-party that held to celebrate her win at the Akwaaba Village, she was named a Tourism Ambassador by the Ghana Tourism Authority.

In the meantime, Afua would have to wait for the results from the Guinness World Records after submitting the entire work to them for assessment.

The Full Monty actor Tom Wilkinson dies at 75

Renowned British actor Tom Wilkinson, celebrated for his roles in iconic films such as “The Full Monty,” “Shakespeare In Love,” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” has died at the age of 75.

The news of his sudden demise was confirmed in a statement released by his family, revealing that he passed away at home surrounded by his wife and loved ones.

Wilkinson’s illustrious career garnered him widespread acclaim, earning a Bafta for his role in “The Full Monty” and securing two Oscar nominations for “Michael Clayton” and “In The Bedroom.” His versatility was evident in over 130 film and TV credits, spanning from period dramas like “Sense and Sensibility” and “Belle” to dynamic roles as criminal masterminds in movies like “Rush Hour” and “RocknRolla.”

George Clooney, who shared the screen with Wilkinson in “Michael Clayton,” praised the late actor as “the epitome of elegance,” emphasizing his transformative impact on every project and fellow actors. Wilkinson’s contributions extended to Emmy-winning performances, including portraying Benjamin Franklin in the mini-series “John Adams” and earning an Emmy nomination for his role as Joe Kennedy in “The Kennedys.”

His unexpected passing on Saturday elicited tributes from fellow actors and industry figures. Robert Carlyle, his co-star in “The Full Monty,” described him as a “real titan of an actor,” while Phil Davis and Will Young hailed him as “powerful and delicate” and “British acting royalty,” respectively.

US filmmaker Scott Derrickson remembered Wilkinson as an “amazing talent” and shared a fond memory of an unexpected kiss on the set of “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.” Tom Wilkinson’s legacy leaves an indelible mark on the world of cinema.

US film maker Scott Derrickson said Wilkinson was “an amazing talent” and recalled a time when the actor gave him a surprise kiss on the lips on the set of The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Born in Leeds before moving to Canada and then Cornwall in childhood, he found his calling at the age of 18 when he was asked to direct a play.

“For the first time in my life, I started doing something I knew how to do,” he said.

“I realised it wasn’t necessarily just these southern middle-class types that got to be actors; it could possibly be people like me. And once I knew, I never changed my mind.”

He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) before following the well-worn path to theatre and television work. In 1986, he got his first major screen role in mini-series First Among Equals, based on Jeffrey Archer’s best-selling novel.

Playing alongside him was Diana Hardcastle. The couple married in 1988, and also went on to play husband and wife in The Kennedys in 2011, and in 2014 action film Good People. The couple had two daughters, Alice and Molly.

When he portrayed Pecksniff in Martin Chuzzlewit for the BBC in 1994, Wilkinson said: “I looked at it and I thought, I can’t get it any better than that. It came out exactly as I meant it to come out. It won a couple of prizes and I thought, I can act, there’s no question.”

Three years later, he was cast as a former factory foreman who joins fellow unemployed workmates in staging a strip show in The Full Monty.

“I was simultaneously offered the lead in a TV series and a possible part in a low-budget movie,” he told The Guardian.

“I remember phoning a friend and he said, ‘Take the TV, take the TV’. But I didn’t follow his advice, and the TV turned out to be crap.”

The low-budget movie, meanwhile, turned out to be the highest-grossing British film up to that point, and took his career to a new level on both sides of the Atlantic.

Wilkinson received high critical acclaim for Todd Field’s 2001 US domestic drama In the Bedroom, in which he played a bereaved father. He was nominated for an Oscar for best actor.

He hoped the film would do two things for him, he later said. “One, [prove] I could play the lead role in a movie. Two, I could play an American lead role. And it did both of those things.”

The actor earned his second Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in Tony Gilroy’s 2007 legal thriller Michael Clayton, starring George Clooney.

Wilkinson’s other credits included Batman Begins, The Patriot, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Gathering Storm, Black Knight, Valkyrie, The Lone Ranger and Denial.

He also provided the voice of the fox in the TV adaptation of children’s best-seller The Gruffalo.

His long term agent Lou Coulson has described him in interviews as “one of the best”.

Off screen, Wilkinson was known for being down-to-earth and keeping a relatively low profile. He said in an interview: “I like to go to Waitrose and not be recognised.”

In the 2005 New Year Honours, Wilkinson was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama.

  • How do Red Sea assaults affect global trade?

How do Red Sea assaults affect global trade?

The stability of global supply chains is under threat as the world’s leading shipping companies are rerouting their vessels away from the Red Sea, in response to increasing attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

These attacks have led to a significant shift in maritime traffic, avoiding one of the most crucial and busiest shipping lanes globally.

The Houthis, showing solidarity with Hamas, have targeted ships they claim are bound for Israel, although the destinations of all the attacked ships remain unconfirmed.

Recent Developments: The intensification of these assaults began with the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October.

The Houthi group, supported by Iran, has been employing drones and missiles to attack international ships passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

This narrow waterway, only 20 miles wide, lies between Eritrea and Djibouti in Africa and Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula, serving as a pivotal route for ships heading north towards Egypt’s Suez Canal.

In an attempt to mitigate the risk of further attacks, major shipping companies like Mediterranean Shipping Company and Maersk have now chosen to take a longer, alternative route.

This detour navigates around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, then proceeds up the continent’s west coast, significantly extending travel times and potentially impacting global supply chains.

BP has also paused all shipments of oil through the Red Sea, blaming the “deteriorating security situation”.

The longer journeys will add at least 10 days shipping times and cost companies millions of dollars.

Why is this shipping route so important?

Any ship passing through the Suez Canal to or from the Indian Ocean has to come via the strait of Bab al-Mandab and the Red Sea.

The Suez Canal is the quickest sea route between Asia and Europe and is particularly important in the transportation of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

About nine million barrels of oil per day were shipped through the Suez Canal in the first half of 2023, according to freight analytics firm Vortexa.

    Information graphic for Suez Canal

Analysts at S&P Global Market Intelligence said nearly 15% of goods imported into Europe, the Middle East and North Africa were shipped from Asia and the Gulf by sea. That includes 21.5% of refined oil and more than 13% of crude oil.

But it is not just about oil. Container ships carry all sorts of consumer goods seen in the shops including TVs, clothes, trainers and sports equipment.

What is the impact on consumers?

It is inevitable that supply chains will be affected due to ships being diverted away from the Red Sea, but consumer goods “will face the largest impact”, according to Chris Rogers, head of supply chain research at S&P Global Market Intelligence, though he does note the current disruption has occurred “during the off-peak shipping season”.

Delays to products reaching shops can be expected, with container ship journeys expected to take at least 10 days longer due to the Cape of Good Hope route adding about 3,500 nautical miles.

The extra distance will also cost companies more. Shipping rates have risen 4% in the past week and those costs could be passed on by businesses to customers.

However, rates still remain much lower than last year, and are far below the levels seen in 2021, when freight charges soared in line with demand as Covid restrictions were eased.

There are also fears the disruption could push up oil prices.

A rise in oil prices, a key ingredient in car fuel, can lead to higher prices at the pumps and also drive higher inflation. Inflation, which measures the pace of price rises, has been falling in the UK and is currently 4.6%.

When it comes to shipments of LNG being disrupted, even if wholesale energy prices rise, any increases would not feed through to domestic bills until April 2024 at the earliest.

This is because the energy price cap, which limits the amount suppliers can charge, has already been set for January.

Is moving freight by sea the only option? Mr Rogers says transporting goods by rail instead would require “crossing Russia”, which is under economic sanctions due to invading Ukraine, while “trucking from the Gulf to Israel may only offset around 3% of shipping”.

What is being done in response?

The attacks have led the US to launch an international naval operation to protect ships in the Red Sea route, and countries including the UK, Canada, France, Bahrain, Norway and Spain have joined.

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin held a virtual meeting with ministers from more than 40 countries on Tuesday, and called on more nations to contribute to efforts to keep shipping safe in the region.

But some shipping companies are reluctant to immediately start using the route again despite increased security.

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, which have both have ships that have been attacked by Houthi rebels, welcomed the extra measures but said it is difficult to determine when they would go back to using the Red Sea, meaning there could be disruption for some time.

  • Tragedy strikes on wedding day as lightning claims 16 lives in Bangladesh

Tragedy strikes on wedding day as lightning claims 16 lives in Bangladesh

On what was supposed to be a day of celebration for his wedding, Mamun found himself burying 16 relatives who fell victim to a tragic incident of lightning in Bangladesh.

Dressed in their finest attire, Mamun’s family members were en route to join him when a heavy storm struck, forcing them to seek shelter under a tin shed on the riverbank.

Unfortunately, they were struck by lightning during the downpour. Bangladesh, prone to extreme weather, experiences an average of 300 lightning-related deaths annually, a stark contrast to the United States, which records fewer than 20 deaths despite having a larger population.

The burden of such incidents weighs heavily on the South Asian nation, leaving survivors like Mamun to grapple with the aftermath of the devastating event that unfolded in August 2021.

The 21-year-old, sharing his story for the first time, recounts the gut-wrenching moment he received the news while getting ready for his wedding at his in-laws’ home in the Shibganj area of the country’s north-west.

“Some people were hugging the bodies,” Mamun recalls, “the injured were crying out in pain… children were screaming. I was at a loss. I could not even decide who I should go to first.”

Image caption,The funerals took place on the evening of Mamun’s wedding

Mamun lost his father, grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunts. His mother wasn’t on the boat and survived the lightning attack.

“When I found my father’s dead body I simply burst into tears. I was so shocked I fell sick,” Mamun says.

Later that evening, the funerals of his relatives took place – the wedding feast they were meant to enjoy was instead distributed to the homeless.

Mamun later got married, but says he doesn’t celebrate his wedding anniversary as it triggers painful memories. “After the tragic incident, now I am really scared of rain and thunder.”

Lightning is a big killer in Bangladesh, claiming more lives annually than floods.

    Lightning in Bangladesh
Image caption,Reported deaths and injuries due to lightning have increased greatly in Bangladesh

The number of reported deaths due to lightning has also risen steeply, from just dozens per year in the 1990s.

Nasa, the UN and the government of Bangladesh cite increased storminess due to climate change as a reason for the increase in deadly strikes.

“Global warming, environmental changes, living patterns are all factors for the increasing death toll due to lightning,” Md Mijanur Rahman, the director general of Bangladesh’s disaster management division, told the BBC.

Such is the seriousness, that the government has added lightning strikes to the official list of natural disasters the country faces which includes floods, cyclones, earthquakes and droughts.

The majority of victims of lightning are farmers, who are vulnerable to the elements as they work the fields through the rainy monsoon months in the spring and summer.

    Abdullah's football shirt
Image caption,Abdullah was wearing his Barcelona shirt when he was struck by lightning

A football shirt, hanging on a rickety fence, overlooking a field in the Satkhira region of Bangladesh is a poignant reminder of one of the victims.

Just days earlier, the shirt had been worn by Abdullah as he went into the vast rice fields to do his day’s work.

Now, draped over the wooden barrier, the Barcelona football shirt is singed and frayed, the burnt edges of thread show where the lightning left its mark in May this year.

Abdullah’s wife of three decades, Rehana, took me to the field to tell me what happened the day she lost her husband.

It was bright and sunny as Abdullah and a group of farmers went to harvest rice. By late afternoon a heavy storm began, and a lightning bolt struck her husband.

“Some of the other farmers brought him to this roadside shop,” Rehana says, pointing to a small shack along the lane. “By then he was already dead.”

    A picture of Abdullah

Back at Rehana’s house, the rice Abdullah harvested a day earlier lies in fresh piles outside the small one-room dwelling.

The couple had recently taken out a loan to build a second room to extend their modest home.

Inside, the couple’s 14-year-old son Masood is reading a book. With no primary earner, Rehana fears she will be left with a lifetime of debt and wonders how she will pay for his studies.

“The fear gripped me so deeply that now if I see a cloud in the sky, I don’t even dare to let my son go outside any more,” she says consumed by tears.

    Rehana pictured on a farm
Image caption,Rehana says she doesn’t let her son outside following the death of her husband

Lightning is a growing concern in other countries too – including neighbouring India which has also seen a rise in the number of strikes in recent years, but a significant reduction in the number of fatalities due to a number of initiatives.

There are efforts in Bangladesh to do more to reduce the number of deaths due to lightning.

Activists say more tall trees need to be planted in remote rural areas to absorb the impact of the strikes, especially in places which have borne the brunt of deforestation.

They also call for a large-scale programme to build lightning sheds, so farmers can take safe shelter, and for broader early warning systems to alert people about possible storms.

One challenge is the poor connectivity and lack of mobile usage in the areas where people are the most vulnerable.

A lack of awareness is also a challenge. Many in the country don’t realise how dangerous lightning can be – few people anywhere in the world expect to be hit by a thunderbolt.

Farmer Ripon Hossen – who was with Abdullah the day he was killed – never imagined what lightning would look like up close, until it struck.

    Farmer Ripon Hossen
Image caption,Farmer Ripon Hossen says he is terrified to work in the open but needs the income from farming

“There was a big loud sound, and then I saw lots of flashing lights,” he recalled. “It was as if a disk of fire had fallen on us. I felt a great electric shock and fell to the ground.

“After a while, I opened my eyes and saw that Abdullah was dead.”

Ripon can’t believe he survived. He says he’s terrified to work in the open, but in this impoverished agricultural area farming is the only source of income for him.

“I cry whenever I think of my friend Abdullah,” he says.

“When I close my eyes at night, all the memories of that day return like a flashback. I can’t console myself.”

  • US destroys houthi boats after red sea hijack attempt

US destroys houthi boats after red sea hijack attempt

The US Navy intervened to halt an aggressive attempt by Houthi-controlled boats to board the Maersk Hangzhou, a container ship, in the Red Sea.

Originating from Yemeni territories under Houthi control, four small vessels engaged the ship, approaching dangerously close.

In response to the distress signal from the Maersk Hangzhou, US warship helicopters engaged the attackers. After coming under fire, they eliminated three Houthi boats in self-defense, resulting in the loss of their crews, while the fourth boat escaped.

Houthi forces have increasingly targeted Red Sea shipping since November, launching over 100 drone and missile strikes against passing vessels, focusing on those associated with Israel as retaliation for the conflict in Gaza.

The Maersk Hangzhou, registered in Singapore and operated by a Danish company, became the latest target in these series of attacks.

Following this incident, Maersk, a global shipping leader, has temporarily suspended its Red Sea operations for two days. This decision comes shortly after resuming the route, bolstered by a US-led mission to safeguard maritime traffic in the region.

The attack occurred early in the morning, around 06:30 Yemeni time, with the Houthi boats employing mounted weaponry and small arms in an attempt to board the ship, getting within 20 meters.

The ship’s crew issued a distress call, and their security team engaged in a firefight, as reported by the US Central Command (Centcom).

Helicopters from the nearby USS Eisenhower aircraft carrier and USS Gravely destroyer responded to the call for help and were shot at while “in the process of issuing verbal calls to the small boats”.

The helicopters “returned fire in self-defense, sinking three of the four small boats, and killing the crews”, Centcom said. It added that the fourth boat “fled the area” and no damage had been recorded to US personnel or equipment.

It was the second attack on the Maersk Hangzhou in 24 hours, after it was attacked with missiles on Saturday.

The anti-ship missiles were fired from Houthi-controlled areas as the destroyers Gravely and Laboon responded on Saturday, according to a previous Centcom statement.

A US Navy admiral told AP the missile attack was the first successful strike since a global patrol was launched on 18 December.

Centcom said while the ships were responding to the distress call, two anti-ship missiles were fired from Houthi-controlled areas at the pair of US navy vessels.

The USS Gravely destroyed the inbound ballistic missiles, Centcom said, adding it was the twenty-third “illegal attack by the Houthis on international shipping” since 19 November.

Centcom added the Maersk Hangzhou is “reportedly seaworthy and there are no reported injuries” on board.

Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) organisation reported an incident in the Red Sea about 55 nautical miles (101km) to the south-west of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.

In a statement, the organisation said an unidentified ship had reported “a loud bang accompanied by a flash on the port bow of the vessel” and several explosions.

No damage was recorded and all members of the crew were reported unhurt, with the vessel escaping the area to a nearby port, the statement said.

The rise in Houthi attacks over several weeks has led many shipping firms, including Maersk, to divert their vessels away from the Red Sea, travelling around the horn of Africa instead.

To reach the Suez Canal in Egypt – which connects to the Mediterranean Sea – ships must pass through the tiny Bab al-Mandab Strait, just off the coast of Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.

The Tehran-sponsored rebels have previously claimed to only target “Israel-linked” commercial ships in response to the war in Gaza, saying the attacks are an attempt to stop Israeli attacks on Palestinians.

In a statement on Sunday, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said he told Iran’s foreign minister that Tehran “shares responsibility for preventing these attacks given their long-standing support to the Houthis”.

Watch: Yemen’s Houthis released video in November showing armed men dropping from a helicopter and seizing a cargo ship

In response, the US launched Operation Prosperity Guardian – an international coalition to safeguard shipping in the the region.

In an interview with the Associated Press, US Navy Vice Admiral Brad Cooper said the Houthis do not seem to be ending their “reckless” attacks in light of the maritime taskforce.

He added that 1,200 commercial ships have passed through the Red Sea since the operation was launched, with none hit by drone or missile strikes until Saturday.

After the international taskforce was announced, the US Department of Defense said the Houthis had carried out over 100 drone and ballistic missile attacks since November. These attempted strikes targeted 10 commercial ships linked to more than 35 different countries, it added.

Maersk said last week that it was preparing to resume journeys through Red Sea – after diverting to the much longer route around the Cape of Good Hope because of recent Houthi attacks on shipping.

Sunday’s attacks have led to another 48 hour pause.

The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important shipping lanes as it links markets in Europe with Asia.

Analysts have warned the attacks could see a rise in prices, as it is also one of the most important routes for oil and liquefied natural gas shipments produced in the Middle East.

When I landed in Ghana, I felt like I was back home – Boris Kodjoe

Renowned actor and philanthropist Boris Kodjoe, born to a Ghanaian father and a German mother, has consistently promoted the notion that being of mixed heritage should be viewed as an asset rather than a challenge.

Kodjoe, known for his notable roles in both film and television, has been a vocal advocate for individuals with diverse cultural backgrounds, encouraging them to embrace the richness of their heritage. His perspective resonates deeply with the experiences of many African Americans who are on a journey to rediscover their roots.

In a recent interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Kodjoe expressed a profound sense of connection and belonging, particularly highlighting the moment he touched down in Ghana. He emphasized that this experience allowed him to feel a strong connection with his ancestors, reinforcing his belief in the significance of cultural roots.

For Kodjoe, the fusion of different cultures and traditions creates a unique tapestry that contributes to an individual’s identity. Through his advocacy, he seeks to inspire others to celebrate the diversity within themselves and recognize the value of their mixed heritage.

“My mother, who is white had a hard time navigating two black children. My father left when I was five so I only saw sporadically. When we came to Ghana we came with him so as soon as I came to Ghana I felt the connection. This is home here more than I do in Germany.

“But growing up my parents always instilled in us that being of mixed heritage was an asset. Is nothing to be ashamed of, it is nothing to hide and it is not a liability, it is an asset because you can speak more than two or three languages. You are attached to various cultures and you get to know the world. So it is always being presented to me that way,” Mr. Kodjoe stated.

He mentioned that many African Americans lack knowledge of their roots.

“I was a baby in Ghana and I have pictures running around Tesano, that is where we lived, that is where my uncle lived and played tennis for three years at the Tesano Club House.

“Knowing my roots and knowing heritage, my ancestry, and knowing my family is something a lot of African-Americans don’t have. There is that disconnection from their ancestry,”

    WHO IS GYEDU -BLAY AMBOLLEY?

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley , affectionately known as the “Simigwa Do Man”, was born in 1947-04-14 in the port city of Sekondi-Takoradi, in the Western Region of Ghana, West Africa. The multi-talented, International, Ghanaian Musician is a Saxophonist, bass guitarist, guitarist, composer, percussionist singer, Band Leader, Arranger and record producer. He celebrated his “Silver Jubilee” in music in 1998. This versatile, irrepressible singer, songwriter, producer and “musical-life-force” exploded on the music scene twenty-five years ago with a jazzy highlife sound called ‘SIMIGWA’.

Ambolley’s early years of musical interest dates back to the age of eight, when he began playing with his father’s flute until he was able to teach himself how to play.
His formal musical training came at the age of fourteen under the apprenticeship of “Uncle Bonku” who taught him the guitar. The young music enthusiast continued to learn the rudiments of music from the late’ Sammy Lartey and Ebo Taylor.

Ambolley spent a great part of his day listening to records of musicians living in the United States. He contributes his free style of singing to such mentors as James Brown, Ray Charles, and ‘the late’ Sam Cook. Ambolley’s name has become synonymous with Simigwa music and dance since his first hit single was released in 1973. Since that hit, he has led many bands including his own in 1979-80. The band leaders’ talent was not limited to Ghana. Ambolley was invited to London where he performed to “standing room only” crowds. Having experienced success in his own country, as well as London, it was time for the ambitious musician to test his musical abilities elsewhere. In 1988, Ambolley left Ghana and arrived in New York (U.S.A.).

Ambolley’s performance career is extensive. He has toured throughout West Africa, Europe, Canada, and the United States. He has performed on the same stage with some of the world’s most celebrated artists, such as the late Miriam Makeba of South Africa, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti of Nigeria, the late George Howard, Angela Bofill, Norman Connors, Manu DeBango, Lakeside, Chikuzan Takahashi of Japan, Ricardo Estrada of Cuba, Mayuto Correa of Brazil and toured Ghana with Oscar Brashear and Michael Session. Because of his originality, his performances have left audiences raving and shouting for more, as was the case at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. He has played the House of Blues in Hollywood, and is a frequent performer at the Jazz Bakery in California.

Returning to Ghana in 1997, Ambolley was honored with a standing ovation from Ghana’s former President, J.J. Rawlings and the first lady at Ghana’s Music Awards Nite.

Ambolley has so many albums to his credit and has received numerous musical awards. Additionally, he received a Congressional, Gubernatorial Certificate of Special Recognition by Congresswoman Juanita Millinder McDonald. Also L.A. • Venice implements measures to tackle over-tourism impact

Venice implements measures to tackle over-tourism impact

Venice is set to implement new regulations, effective from June, aimed at mitigating the impact of mass tourism on the iconic Italian city.

The measures include a ban on loudspeakers, which can cause “confusion and disturbances,” and restrictions on tourist groups exceeding 25 people.

Over-tourism has become a pressing concern for Venice, and these efforts follow the approval of a trial €5 fee for daily visitors in September.

The city, spanning just 7.6 sq km, hosted nearly 13 million tourists in 2019, with numbers expected to rise post-pandemic, prompting measures to address the strain on the historic city.

The latest policies, overseen by Elisabetta Pesce, focus on enhancing the management of organized groups within the historic center.

Amid the challenges posed by over-tourism, an increasing number of Venice residents are opting to relocate to escape the potential overwhelm caused by tourists.

Citizen associations are actively monitoring available beds for both tourists and residents.

The city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, faced a potential listing as endangered due to climate change and mass tourism impacts, though it was ultimately spared.

Venice joins other European destinations in adopting measures, such as entry fees and fines, to address the adverse effects of excessive tourism.

Gomey’s unique journey commenced when he discovered a post by Guinness World Records on TikTok.

Intrigued by the potential opportunities, he explored their extensive range of record categories and ultimately chose to take on the captivating challenge of lipstick application.

“I am a nurse and asides that, I do makeup. I entered makeup and a whole list came concerning makeup out of which I chose lipstick application,” Gomey shared in a phone interview with GraphicOnline.

“So, with mine, it’s not going to be a marathon or race, just that I have been limited to applying lipstick within 30 seconds on different models”.

The existing record for this achievement is an impressive 4 applications in 30 seconds, set by the renowned Chinese makeup artist and influencer Li Jiaqi in 2018. While Li’s attempt occurred during a live webcast, Gomey’s endeavor is scheduled to take place at a location in the Greater Accra Region yet to be confirmed, promising an electrifying atmosphere for onlookers.

“I’m excited to showcase my talent on a global platform and inspire others to chase their dreams,” Gomey expressed with infectious enthusiasm. “I also want to encourage Ghanaians to rally behind me, just like they did for Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum during her incredible sing-a-thon attempt. Their support will be my strongest weapon on this record-breaking journey.”

Gomey’s event, which could last up to three hours, is expected to be a colorful spectacle. The world record attempt is the main attraction of the event, but there will be plenty of exciting side events and entertainment as well, making sure that everyone has an amazing time.

Baby girl pulled alive from Gaza rubble after Israeli air strike

In a remarkable rescue operation in Rafah, southern Gaza, rescuers pulled a baby girl named Mariam Abu Akel alive from the rubble following an Israeli air strike.

People on the scene used their hands to free Mariam from the debris, and a rescuer swiftly transported her to a nearby hospital, where doctors attended to her cuts.

Tragically, Mariam had been sheltering in a house with her family during the air strike, which claimed the lives of her mother and sister. Fortunately, her father and young brother survived the incident.

The same air strike resulted in the death of 20 people and left 55 others injured, according to a spokesperson from the Hamas-run health ministry.

The ongoing conflict has led to more than 21,500 casualties, predominantly children and women, in Israeli retaliatory attacks on Gaza.

Many are still believed to be trapped under the wreckage of buildings destroyed by air and artillery strikes.

Israel initiated its military campaign in Gaza in response to a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, causing widespread casualties and hostage situations.

  • Biden administration approves emergency weapons sale to Israel

Biden administration approves emergency weapons sale to Israel

The United States President Joe Biden’s administration has once again authorized an emergency weapons sale to Israel, bypassing Congress, as Israel intensifies and broadens its attacks on the Gaza Strip, sparking international outrage.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed Congress of his second emergency determination in less than a month, approving a $147.5 million equipment sale to Israel, announced by the State Department on Friday.

“The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to US national interests to ensure Israel is able to defend itself against the threats it faces,” the State Department stated, citing the urgency of Israel’s defensive needs.

The package includes ancillary items necessary for Israel to manufacture the 155mm shells it had previously acquired. This emergency determination bypasses the usual congressional review process for foreign military sales, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to Israel’s security.

Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane, reporting from Washington, DC, highlighted the broader context, noting the Biden administration’s previous calls for Israel to reduce conflict intensity. Despite such calls, the emergency weapons sale provides Israel with the munitions required for a high-intensity campaign.

Ensuring Israel gets weapons to continue its intense phase of the war, while also urging it to lower the intensity of fighting, is “strategically self-defeating” for Washington, according to Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara, who called Friday’s decision “astounding”.

“One really has to look deep to see if there is any meaningful explanation for why the Biden administration wants to bypass Congress in order to expedite weapons to a country that is involved in war crimes,” he said on Saturday.

The move was “morally scandalous” given that the war has caused record damage and killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, Bishara said, but it is also “politically suspect in the sense that why would you want to bypass Congress twice in the same month? What is the urgency to bypass your own guidelines?”

On December 9, the Biden administration made another emergency determination to approve the sale to Israel of nearly 14,000 rounds of tank ammunition worth more than $106m.

Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, criticised the US’s role in the war, saying: “While these crimes have been committed with Israeli hands, they were sponsored and backed up by the US administration.”

In a televised statement on Saturday, he added that the group holds the Biden administration “accountable for their direct role in sponsoring and orchestrating this ongoing genocide against our people”.

    ‘Record’ devastation

The move to expedite more weapons comes as Biden’s request for an enormous $106bn package that includes aid for Ukraine, Israel and other perceived national security needs has yet to pass Congress, as it is entangled in a debate over US immigration and border security policies.

The Biden administration has tried to counter criticism over the mounting death toll in Gaza and continued US arms sales to Israel by saying it constantly maintains contact with Israel to stress the importance of minimising civilian casualties.

However, Luciana Zaccara, an associate professor in Gulf politics at Qatar University, told Al Jazeera it was pursuing a “dual-track” approach when it comes to the war.

“On the one hand they are trying to convince the public opinion that the US is really concerned about civilian casualties but also they keep sustaining Israel (militarily),” he said. “It is totally contradicting … it is hard to understand how this is in the national interest.”

The policy was especially perplexing in light of “mounting pressure” in the US, including among Democrats, against the war as civilian casualties in Gaza continue to rise, Zaccara said.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that the war “is generating destruction comparable in scale to the most devastating warfare in the modern record”.

By mid-December, Israel had dropped 29,000 bombs, munitions and shells on Gaza, destroying or damaging nearly 70 percent of homes, the report said.

Some Democratic lawmakers have suggested further significant aid to Israel should be contingent on concrete promises by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to curb civilian casualties in Gaza.

More than 21,000 Palestinians have now been killed in the besieged enclave since October 7, most of them children and women, in what has been widely described as collective punishment. Thousands more are missing.

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said on Saturday that Israeli authorities continue to impose “severe restrictions” on humanitarian access despite deliveries of aid from Egypt and through the Rafah crossing.

He also said they are “creating a stream of baseless misinformation” to accuse aid agencies over gaps in deliveries.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned again that the conflict could spread to the wider region if not halted immediately.

Ghanaian rapper, Okyeame Kwame, recently clarified why he chose not to disclose details of his personal relationship with actress Nana Ama McBrown in his book, “Love Locked Down.”

During an interview on The Portfolio, the artist explained that he finds it inappropriate to exploit intimate details about someone he has shared a personal connection with in the past solely to boost book sales.

Three people have been ordered by an Adentan Circuit Court not to host a “All-white or All-black attire party” on January 1, 2024.

Michael Ayenu, Dennis Tawiah, and Francis Ayenu are the three.

In order to prevent conflicts and disturbances of the peace in Adenta, Accra, t

The court said: “In the interest of upholding and ensuring public peace and order, and in the interest of protecting lives and property, the respondents, Francis Ayenu, Dennis Tawiah and Michael Ayenu; their agents, assigns, workmen, servants and any other person or group claiming through or under them are hereby restrained and or prohibited from organising, holding, carrying-on, executing, throwing or proceeding with the planned “All white/ All black” event/ party or other event name of description they may give it, and as planned for the 1st day of January 2024.”

The Adenta High Court received a writ from an interested party named Francis Ayenu, who also filed an injunction against the other partners to stop them from holding any events on December 28, 2023, and January 1, 2024, according to the Police.

The Police said, however, “even though the processes had been served on the defendant, they went ahead to hold the event on December 28, 2023, in flagrant disregard to the powers and authority of the High Court, Adenta and they are again planning to hold the second event on January 1, 2024, despite the pending injunction.”

It said Police intelligence revealed that Francis Ayenu and his group were also planning to organise the same event at the same venue on January 1, 2024, and use “land guards” to disrupt the event of Dennis Tawiah and Michael Ayenu.

The Police argued that “if the planned action is executed, there would be a total breach of peace”.

The Police, therefore, prayed the court to restrain Francis Ayenu and Dennis Tawiah together with Michael Ayenu and their agents as well as any other person associated with the organisers of the event from carrying out the planned event on January 1, 2024.

Lebanese Embassy clears up confusion about mistaken identity at Sing-a-thon event

The Lebanese Embassy in Ghana has issued a clarification regarding media reports that inaccurately identified the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Mr. Maher Kheir, as Sunil Waghmare, who holds a Guinness World Record from India.

This correction comes after H.E. Mr. Maher Kheir’s visit on Thursday, December 28, 2023, to Akwaaba Village, where he extended substantial support to Ghanaian entrepreneur and journalist, Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, in her bid to set a record.

While photographs and videos from the event showcased H.E. Mr. Maher Kheir’s participation and the Lebanese community’s backing for Afua Asantewaa, some media outlets mistakenly reported him as Sunil Waghmare.

The Embassy has stepped in to rectify this error.

In a statement issued on Friday, December 29, 2023, the Embassy stated, “Recent reports have mistakenly identified H.E. Mr. Maher Kheir, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, as Mr. Sunil Waghmare, the Indian Guinness World Record holder. We would like to correct this error and confirm that Ambassador Kheir, due to the friendly relationship between the people of Lebanon and the people of Ghana, attended the event at Akwaaba Village on Thursday, December 28th, 2023, in a gesture of support for Mrs. Afua Asantewaa O. Life has been challenging after going through divorce – Basketmouth

Renowned Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth, recently shared that this year has been challenging for him, especially after his divorce, leading him to take a hiatus from the comedy scene.

During his performance at the 1030 Laughs and Music event held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) this week, Basketmouth incorporated humor into addressing his personal struggles.

He playfully remarked about wearing grey, not due to aging, but because he’s been contemplating the difficulties he’s faced in the past few months.

“Most people think I have dyed my hair but that is not so. I have been thinking too much. Imagine going through divorce after 12 years of marriage and things you expect to go well for you are not happening. It has not been easy for me at all,” he stated.

Basketmouth shared insights into the paradoxical world of music during his recent performance. He pointed out how musicians make significant earnings by performing songs for their fans, only to have the same fans singing those songs back to them on stage.

“If I am taking money like Davido, Burna Boy or Wizkid,  I would probably quit comedy. $2 million for just a performance is a big money,” he said.

The Ghanaian trio comprising Afia Barcelona, OB Amponsah, and Lekzy Decomic delivered an outstanding performance on stage.

OB Amponsah added a touch of humor, sharing a hilarious experience where people often mistake him for an Uber driver due to his small car.

He humorously recounted instances at the mall and other public places where individuals awaiting their Uber rides would check his car’s number plate, assuming he might be their driver.

“One time, a guy actually opened the back door and entered my car and said he was going to Nungua, I had to tell him I am not an Uber driver. This is actually not fair to us using smaller cars,” he said.

The evening featured remarkable musical performances by Nacee and Cina Soul, adding a melodic dimension to the event. Comedians Mic Danfo, Hogan, and Gordons brought laughter to the audience with their entertaining acts on stage.

Serving as the compere for the night, Foster Romanus skillfully managed the proceedings, ensuring a delightful and well-coordinated event.

  • Global carbon emissions reach potential peak in 2023

Global carbon emissions reach potential peak in 2023

Experts suggest that global efforts to mitigate a climate catastrophe may have achieved a critical milestone, with the peak of global carbon emissions from energy use occurring in the past year.

There’s a growing consensus among climate analysts that 2023 could be noted as the year when annual emissions reached their highest point before the global fossil fuel economy embarks on a terminal decline.

Considered a pivotal tipping point in the pursuit of net-zero emissions, this milestone is seen as a crucial moment.

However, for many climate experts, it’s an inflection point that should have arrived earlier. While encouraging, it falls significantly short of the swift reduction required to meet global targets.

Leading climate scientists consistently emphasize the urgency of reducing carbon dioxide buildup in the Earth’s atmosphere before 2030 to limit global heating to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Achieving the necessary emission reductions demands a global transformation of unprecedented scale, a task that, according to most experts, is not yet in progress.

“We can take a small pause to celebrate this tipping point,” said Dave Jones, a director at the climate thinktank Ember. “But in a way it’s worrying that we are still talking about when emissions might peak. The reality of the situation is that we need deep and fast reductions in emissions if we hope to stay within the vanishingly small budget for carbon which remains.”

The International Energy Agency (IEA) raised hopes earlier this year of an end to the fossil fuel era when it predicted for the first time that the consumption of oil, gas and coal would peak before 2030 and begin to fall as climate policies took effect.

“It’s not a question of ‘if’, it’s just a matter of ‘how soon’ – and the sooner the better for all of us,” said Fatih Birol, the head of the IEA.

To understand how the world may have already reached an end to rising global emissions, just two years after one of the steepest emissions hikes in history, it helps to look at the global electricity sector.

“The world is teetering at the peak of power sector emissions,” said Malgorzata Wiatros-Motyka, the lead author of a report by Ember. Earlier this year the report found that emissions from generating electricity had plateaued over the first half of 2023 and could be poised to fall from next year.

The report studied power generation across 78 countries representing 92% of global electricity demand. It found a 16% rise in the amount of solar power generated and a 10% jump in global wind power output.

In the IEA’s flagship report, widely considered to be one of the most influential in the climate and energy debate, it found that the steady rise of wind and solar power was on track to outpace the world’s growing demand for energy – meaning renewables will start to displace fossil fuels on a global scale.

At the same time the rollout of electric vehicles globally is expected to start eroding the demand for road fuels, which makes up about 50% of the oil demand in developed countries.

These trends have accelerated since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which triggered a surge in the commodity price for gas and oil in 2022 and incentivised a renewed focus on securing domestic sources of clean energy instead.

In one scenario put forward by the IEA, based on the stated policies of global governments, it found that emissions may peak as soon as this year before beginning a slow decline. The IEA is careful to say that none of its scenarios should be considered a forecast. The “stated policies” scenario is one of the more reliable barometers of what the future may hold because it is based on “a detailed review of the current policy landscape”, or in other words, what governments are doing rather than what they are say they will do.

The findings are backed up by a number of separate studies, all from well-regarded energy authorities, which paint a picture of a world at the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era.https://interactive.guim.co.uk/uploader/embed/2023/12/co2_emissions/giv-134252EM3FEfcd8ZA/

An analysis of China’s carbon emissions – the highest in the world and more than the emissions of the US, India and Russia combined – found that they may reach a peak this year before falling into a structural decline by 2024. The study by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, undertaken for Carbon Brief, found that China’s rollout of wind and solar power had been faster than expected this year and could eclipse the country’s growing energy appetite.

A peak in China’s emissions this year was also found by Climate Analytics, a climate policy institute, which predicted that an emissions peak for the world’s most energy-hungry nation could drive the world to an emissions “tipping point” in 2023.

Dr Neil Grant, an author of the report, said: “For years, energy demand growth has outstripped renewables deployment, despite record additions of wind and solar. We’re now approaching the tipping point, where renewables overtake demand growth and start displacing coal, oil and gas. This would mark the beginning of the end for the fossil economy.”

There is a note of caution in the prediction though. Claire Fyson, another author of the Climate Analytics report, warned that the existing trends seeing rising renewables and electric motoring would need to continue to allow emissions to begin falling.

“This won’t just happen by itself,” Fyson said. “Technologies often follow an ‘S’ curve where they really take off but over time their progress can slow. You need government policy to continue to incentivise renewables and [disincentivise] fossil fuels.”

Not everyone agrees that fossil fuels have reached the beginning of the end. Some of the biggest oil producers in the world have publicly stated that oil demand – and emissions – show no sign of falling.

The US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) said earlier this year that energy-related carbon emissions would continue to rise, in line with growing global demand for oil, until 2050. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) has also predicted that global oil demand will continue to grow out to 2045, albeit at a slower pace than in recent years.

“I think you have to think about the motives behind these projects,” said Fyson. “It’s in Opec’s best interest to forecast a rise in oil demand.”

Strong oil demand forecasts can create a self-fulfilling prophecy. They might encourage governments to back further oil and gas exploration to avoid a shortfall, which in turn can lead to lower oil commodity prices if there is more oil and gas than needed. This creates a disincentive to switch from a fossil fuel vehicle or heating system to an electric alternative if it’s cheaper to use gas or oil.

Opec has consistently underestimated the rollout of electric vehicles in its official forecasts, which are used by governments to inform their policies, according to experts. Its forecasts for the number of electric vehicles on the roads by 2022 were too low by an average of almost 60% over the period 2015-2021, according to a recent report by Zero Carbon Analytics. In 2021, the cartel’s forecasts for the global electric vehicles fleet just one year ahead were wrong by 49%, the report found.

Amy Kong, the author of the report, said the forecasts were “wildly wrong year after year” in what appears to be an “underhand attempt by oil producers to persuade investors and governments that fossil fuels have a future”.

Even in a world of declining fossil fuels and carbon emissions there is a clear risk of failing to move fast enough to reduce emissions in time to prevent global heating of 1.5C above pre-industrialised levels, according to climate experts.

The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that for the world to have a shot at keeping global heating below the 1.5C target set out in the Paris agreement emissions will need to fall by about 9% every year. For context, emissions fell 5.4% when the Covid-19 pandemic brought global economies to a standstill in 2020 before starting to rise again.

There will need to be great strides in addressing the world’s record high carbon emissions, but from next year there’s a strong chance that at least they will be moving in the right direction.

    Hello to you, dear reader!

When the former Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha delivered his New Year message back in 1967, he pulled the cord marked “truth bomb”. “This year will be harder than last year,” he declared. “It will, however, be easier than next year.” I mean … on the one hand: thanks for not sugar-coating it, Enver. On the other: way to kill the party buzz, you monster!

I don’t want to murder the atmosphere (or indeed any dissidents) by reminding you of the news year you’ve just lived through – or by warning you of the news year you’re about to live through. It’s not big, it’s not clever, and it’s sure as heck not seasonal.

But I will say, pointedly, that our reporting feels particularly necessary in dark times. If you can, please help support the Guardian on a monthly basis from just $2, so as to keep it open for everyone. I can’t tell you how much it would be appreciated. A free press is needed now as much as it has ever been – and on some days, more than it has ever been.

In return for this support, I am formally* bestowing upon you the right to refer to yourself – in conversation, in the pub, and on any business cards you may care to have printed up – as “a newspaper baron”. Face it: if you pay to support a news organisation, then you ARE to all intents and purposes a newspaper baron. Just enjoy it! All the others do.

With that, it simply remains is for me to wish you a very happy holidays, and a splendid new year. Goodness knows you’ve earned it.

  • South Africa lodges ICJ case alleging Israel’s involvement in ‘genocidal acts’

South Africa lodges ICJ case alleging Israel’s involvement in ‘genocidal acts’

South Africa has officially submitted a case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of committing “genocidal acts” in the Gaza Strip.

The United Nations court has confirmed the initiation of proceedings, focusing on alleged breaches of Israel’s obligations under the Genocide Convention.

Israel vehemently denies the accusation, dismissing it as “baseless” and expressing strong opposition to what it calls a “blood libel” spread by South Africa.

ICJ’s Role and South Africa’s Statement

The ICJ, based in The Hague, Netherlands, serves as the principal legal body of the United Nations, resolving disputes between states and providing advisory opinions on international legal matters. South Africa, in its application to the ICJ, emphasized its obligation “to prevent genocide from occurring.” The country expressed grave concerns about civilian suffering in Gaza due to what it perceives as indiscriminate force and forcible removal of inhabitants.

    Genocidal Allegations and Requested Measures

South Africa’s 84-page document argues that the “acts and omissions by Israel” are “genocidal in character,” intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial, and ethnic group. The application requests an expedited ICJ hearing and urges the court to indicate several “provisional measures,” including a cessation of all Israeli military activities in Gaza.

    Israel’s Response and Counterclaims

Israel’s foreign affairs ministry spokesperson, Lior Haiat, denounced South Africa’s claim as a “despicable and contemptuous exploitation of the Court.” He accused South Africa of cooperating with a terrorist organization (Hamas) and emphasized that Israel directs its military efforts against terrorist entities. Haiat stated that Israel is committed to international law, endeavors to minimize harm to non-involved individuals in Gaza, and facilitates humanitarian aid.

    Deterioration of Diplomatic Relations

The ongoing conflict has strained diplomatic relations between South Africa and Israel. In November, South Africa recalled all its diplomats from Israel, prompting a reciprocal move from Israel recalling its ambassador from Pretoria. The South African national assembly voted to suspend all diplomatic relations with Israel, although the government has not yet formally responded to the vote.

    Previous Referral to the ICC

South Africa had previously filed a referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding alleged war crimes by Israel in Gaza. The ICC investigates and prosecutes individuals charged with genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Israel does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC.

    Background of the Conflict

The current conflict between Israel and Hamas was triggered by a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, resulting in casualties and hostages.

The situation has led to a significant loss of life in Gaza, with over 21,500 people reported killed, predominantly children and women, during Israeli retaliatory attacks, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
