  • The 5 stages of love and potential hurdles at stage 3

The 5 stages of love and potential hurdles at stage 3

Let’s abandon the rose-colored glasses for a grounded view of love’s evolution.

Love, a term often casually used and occasionally misinterpreted, poses intriguing questions. What truly defines it? How does it transform with time? Is love purely a result of chemistry, or does it develop into something more profound? The answers to these questions remain elusive.

Psychologists propose a five-stage model for the unfolding of love. Introduced by Professor Arthur Aron, this framework aims to chart the journey from initial butterflies in the stomach to an uncertain destination. The ultimate outcome is largely unpredictable.

    Stage 1: Infatuation

This is the “honeymoon phase,” where you’re head over heels in love with your special someone. You’re obsessed with their smile, their laugh, their very existence. It’s intense, exciting, and…temporary.

Sadly, this feeling, fueled by hormones like dopamine and oxytocin, making you feel as high as a stoner, never lasts. Butterflies can’t fly forever.

    Stage 2: Intimacy

As the initial frenzy settles, we enter stage two – intimacy. This is where you get to know each other, flaws and all. You share secrets, dreams, fears, and vulnerabilities. You slowly build a foundation of trust and understanding; like a safe space.

As the intense passion of early romance subsides, you develop a deeper connection with your partner; a feeling of strong attachment and contentment. The sex might not be as wild, but it’s deeply satisfying.

    Stage 3: Disillusionment

This is the phase where we begin to see things as they truly are. Our temporary colour blindness to those glaring red flags finally clears off.

You might be faced with different opinions, habits, or even dealbreakers. The rose-coloured glasses come off, and we see each other clearly.

It is a bumpy phase, and sadly, many relationships never make it past this third stage.

    Stage 4: Commitment

If your love survives stage three, congratulations! You’ve survived the storm and entered the fourth stage – commitment.

This stage is about choosing each other and building a future together. You’re weathering a storm and emerging stronger, knowing you can face anything as a team. You stand by each other through thick and thin and pick each other up when you fall. It’s about “we,” not just “me” and “you.” You both decided to make it work, and it worked.

    Stage 5: Companionship

Remember those butterflies you felt in stage one? They might return, but in a different form. This new phase is both a comfortable and fulfilling one. It’s a quiet assurance that your partner is your rock, your confidante and best friend. You understand each other, respect each other, and simply enjoy being together.

Not many couples reach this phase, but those who do are the ones who patiently and consciously work on their relationship.

  • 10 subtle indicators your partner might be prone to guilt-tripping

10 subtle indicators your partner might be prone to guilt-tripping

The manipulation technique known as guilt-tripping is not uncommon in relationships and finds its roots in certain cultural and religious practices aimed at molding individuals’ behavior.

Employing emotional manipulation to make someone who cares about you feel guilty has been a longstanding tactic used to influence behaviors and shape belief systems.

If you find yourself questioning whether your partner or a significant person in your life is employing guilt-tripping tactics in your relationship, or if you are curious about whether you have guilt-tripped others in the past, leading to certain behaviors or belief systems, consider these 10 signs indicative of a partner who engages in guilt-tripping:

    1. They always make you feel bad

Does your partner suggest you do not work as hard as them, their parents, or other people they know at home, work, or both? That’s guilt-tripping I dealt with a lot in my relationship.

    2. They use the past against you

If your partner keeps bringing up the past to control you, that’s guilt-tripping.

    3. They make you feel guilty by never letting you forget how great they are

Does your partner keep reminding you of favors they did for you? It might be just one favor, and they keep mentioning it so they can guilt trip you in doing whatever they need to be done.

    4. They use your feelings against you

Some partners have mastered faking emotions, whether anger or sorrow, but won’t directly tell you what they need. You start running around trying to figure out what their pain is and do things to appease them.

These are expert manipulators, and their response is a stale “nothing” or silence to guilt-trip you into moving mountains to please them.

    5. They use conflict avoidance against you

The silent treatment could last for a very long time to guilt trip you to gain eternal favors. Guilt is a strong emotion in the human psyche. The silent treatment is an art, and it could be argued that it’s the topmost form of emotional guilt-tripping.

You are stuck in suspended animation as you have nothing to go with except what you are feeling within — mostly confusion and guilt.

    6. They assume the role of a disapproving parent

Often, I have seen a partner assume the role of a disapproving parent and guilt trip you through cold shoulders, sideways looks they give you, and even using “that” tone in their voice.

    7. They will tell you that you “owe” them

This form of direct guilt-tripping happens rarely, but it still does when your partner tells you directly you “owe” them.

    8. They engage in passive-aggressive behavior

When your partner doesn’t want to directly ask for something because they are not “that” person but will tell you how someone else does something for their partner without asking for it. That’s passive-aggressive guilt-tripping.

    9. They thrive on “tough love”

When your partner belittles your efforts so you do more for them, that’s another way your partner is guilt-tripping you. But, if you ever question them, they will say, “I care about you.” or things like, “I know you can do more/better.” or “It’s for your good.”

    10. They constantly gaslight you

Gaslighting is another form of guilt-tripping. This is abuse carried out by master manipulators in a relationship. And, to me, it’s the cruelest form of guilt-tripping. They do something and deny it so convincingly you start wondering if you are going insane.

    Impacts of guilt-tripping in relationships

You might stop trusting your partner and feel like you always walk on eggshells.

Feeling belittled is common if you have been guilt-tripped for a long time. You might fear that your partner has spies in your close relationships, and you might feel fear even when your partner isn’t with you.

Your partner might fulfill their demands but is losing the relationship, and resentment runs high. When guilt-tripping in relationships goes on for some time, it might backfire, and the other partner may start to use it, too.

Then guilt-tripping might become the norm in the relationship. Or, the relationship dissolves, and whoever feels they’re being taken advantage of might walk away. The long-term feelings of resentment might ultimately be too much to bear.

This behavior affects your emotional, physical, and mental health. If mental illness is present among either partner, it could be made worse.

How to cope with guilt-tripping in relationships

Clear communication is crucial. If your partner resorts to guilt-tripping, recognize their emotions and express your guilt feelings. Collaborate on establishing healthier communication methods to address their needs.

Establish and uphold boundaries, making it clear that you’ll fulfill their requests within your capacity. Avoid conveying through body language that you’re unaffected, preventing the perpetuation of the guilt cycle.

Silent compliance may lead to guilt-tripping others in your relationships, such as family or children. If efforts prove insufficient, seeking professional assistance might be necessary to regain control of your life.

  • Why Delay does not want to accept Freezy Macbones’ proposal

Why Delay does not want to accept Freezy Macbones’ proposal

In the course of Freezy Macbones’s interview on The Delay Show, an unexpected twist occurred when the host playfully alluded to his age, humorously suggesting that entering into a relationship with him might cast her in the role of a sugar mummy.

This lighthearted exchange unfolded shortly after the boxer openly expressed his admiration for Delay and his aspirations to marry the media personality.

Renowned for his victorious bout in April 2023, the UK-based Ghanaian boxer was recounting his achievements in amateur fights, which followed five prior losses.

He elaborated on his resilience in the face of defeats, and the conversation took an intriguing turn as they explored the topic of age.

He said: “In my amateur days, it was simple: knock my opponent out, or I lose. That’s the essence of my unique style. I experienced a tough stretch, losing five consecutive fights out of eighteen. Despite the setbacks, I emerged victorious in fourteen or thirteen of them. If I had given up, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Every loss was accompanied by tears because I knew, back in the gym, I trained harder than anyone else.”

When Delay was asked if losing to opponents younger than him had anything to do with the fact that he was thirty years old at the time, he replied negatively.

“Those you met were in their twenties,” 41-year-old Delay said. “You’re 30. If I date you, I become your sugar mummy, I’m just saying. So, if you fought were younger, could that be the reason you lost?”

This provided Macbones with another chance to express his admiration for Delay, this time by asking if she was worried about her age.

He asked, “Do you care about that?” leaving Delay puzzled. She responded, “About what?”

He clarified, “About being older than me,” and they both laughed.

In the initial stage of the interview, Macbones was starstruck as he openly expressed his desire to marry Delay.

“Wow!” was the first word he exclaimed upon being welcomed to the show. “I can’t believe it,” he added when asked about the reasons behind his expression.

“I can’t believe I’m seated right in front of you,” exclaimed Macbones before he disclosed the communications he has had with people about marrying her. “You can ask Sister Denta; I’ve always told her that I won’t marry anyone except you. Meeting you is all part of God’s plan.”

  • Cedi weakens against major currencies despite inflation dip, Central Bank intervention

Cedi weakens against major currencies despite inflation dip, Central Bank intervention

Last week, the Ghanaian cedi experienced a 1.22% depreciation against the US dollar in the retail market, alongside losses of 0.65% to the pound and 0.19% against the euro, despite a cooling inflation rate of 23.2% in December 2023.

Despite the Central Bank’s auction of $20 million for Bulk Oil Distribution Companies in its first 2024 sale, corporate demand continued unabated.

The retail market or forex bureaus closed trades with the cedi at GH¢12.33/$, compared to GH¢12.18/$ the previous week.

Analysts are optimistic about the potential positive impact of the expected $600 million inflows from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) following the board’s approval of Ghana’s program review on January 19, 2024.

This is anticipated to enhance market sentiments, bolster foreign exchange reserves, and strengthen supply-side interventions.

On January 12, 2024, the government reached debt restructuring agreements with official creditors, signaling a positive step in Ghana’s economic recovery.

Year-to-date, the local currency has depreciated approximately 1.50% against the dollar in the retail market.

  • 15% VAT on electricity aimed at settling outstanding debts in energy sector – Agyapa Mercer

15% VAT on electricity aimed at settling outstanding debts in energy sector – Agyapa Mercer

In a bid to bolster its COVID-19 recovery program, the government has elucidated the reasons behind the implementation of a 15 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption.

The move is geared towards generating additional revenue to support the recovery efforts.

Deputy Energy Minister Agyapa Mercer, in an interview with Citi FM on Monday, January 15, underscored the challenging nature of this decision.

Nevertheless, he emphasized its necessity, particularly in settling outstanding debts owed to independent power producers.

“Obviously, if you look at the scope of the tax and what it is intended to do—raise revenue to meet some obligations of the government in the energy sector—it will interest you to know that, as we speak, as of July 2023, the amount of money that we owe to the IPPs alone is in the region of GH¢1.7 billion.”

Increasing demands from the Minority and energy experts urge the reconsideration of the Value Added Tax imposed on specific residential electricity consumers.

In a correspondence conveying the Finance Ministry’s policy to the Public Utility Regulatory Commission, Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta indicates that the value-added levy will be applicable to electricity consumption beyond lifeline units.

The ministry clarifies that this initiative is a component of the government’s Covid-19 recovery program.

  • Army Chief denies refusing CDS role amid alleged attacks

Army Chief denies refusing CDS role amid alleged attacks

Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has denied rumors suggesting that he rejected an offer to become the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

The senior army officer dismissed the unfounded speculations, expressing frustration over the unwarranted criticism he has faced as a result.

Addressing the issue on JoyNews, he remarked, “The name Oppong-Preprah is causing unease and anxiety, leading to baseless attacks on me. I fail to comprehend the reasons behind these attacks.”

“Even this morning just before I got here, a publication was sent to me where it is being indicated that I have refused to accept the appointment of CDS and as a result there is a stop in the military shakeup.”

His remarks come just two weeks after the presidential office issued a statement refuting rumors suggesting a politically-driven reorganization of the military hierarchy to favor the ruling party in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Major General Oppong-Peprah clarified that following the spread of these rumors, certain individuals resorted to seeking supernatural intervention to eliminate him.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that those perceiving him as a problem were misguided.

“I have been taken to juju people and all that. We have pictures of it. In fact, it was one of the military police gentlemen who brought me pictures. But I am still standing here, I am not dead and I will not die. If you can’t cope up with what I do, just sit down and zip up. That is all,” he said on January 15, 2024.

Again, he added that people mistake him for an Akyem but he is Bono from Dormaa Ahenkro.

The high-profile army officer said people might look at his achievements in the security service for which reason they think he is a threat. However, he emphasised that he did not accomplish the successes on his own but it was a collective effort.

“For the past four years together, teamwork we have achieved so much and people are jealous of us. That is all. I did not do it, we did it as an army together with my staff officers and everyone. Commanding officers team going to Bundase and adding to whatever we are doing over there. It is teamwork, it is not me, Oppong-Preprah so don’t attack me” he added.

  • 7 versatile sneaker styles ideal for pairing with any dress in your wardrobe

7 versatile sneaker styles ideal for pairing with any dress in your wardrobe

Achieving effortless style can be tricky, but the effortlessly casual combo of a dress and sneakers nails it every time. Not only does this fail-safe ensemble let you showcase a variety of dresses—ranging from micro minis to full-skirted maxis—it’s also the perfect fashion solution for those busy days on your agenda.

Whether you’re running errands followed by a movie date or hustling from brunch to happy hour, there’s a dress and sneakers ensemble for every occasion.

In the following section, we’ve curated 21 fantastic ways to rock a dress with sneakers, along with all the styling tips you need to effortlessly pull off this look throughout the year.

    Nike Sneakers

Whether you love high tops, low tops, or edgy statement sneakers, there’s a pair of Nikes out there that’ll suit your aesthetic and look great with a dress. Since Nike delivers sneakers in so many vibrant shades, we recommend going to color matching or color-blocking route when pairing a dress with these sneakers.

    White Sneakers

    Getty Images

White sneakers are a classic wardrobe staple for a reason: they go with everything. When it comes to styling white sneakers with dresses, you can’t go wrong with an all-white or timeless black-and-white color palette. If you’re not a fan of minimalism, try pairing white sneakers with your favorite floral dress for a breezy, bohemian vibe.

    Dad Sneakers

    Getty Images

We likely won’t be escaping the burgeoning popularity of the dad sneaker—not to be confused with the chunky dad sneaker, which is its own genre—anytime soon, so we’re leaning in by taking an elevated approach to styling these celeb-loved sneakers. When worn with a chic wrap dress or linen maxi, dad sneakers become deliciously subversive. They’re equally on point when given a ’90s-styling treatment via a slip dress worn over a tee shirt.

    Chunky Sneakers

Chunky sneakers tend to have a bit of bulge in their silhouettes, making them supremely comfortable statement shoes. Wearing these shoes with dresses featuring thigh-high slits, elegant draping, or airy fabrics with slip and movement such as chiffon, silk, or satin, is a great way to balance out their bulkiness.

    Platform Sneakers

    Getty Images

A close cousin to the chunky sneaker, platform sneakers have a touch less edge—quite literally—and are generally found in sleeker silhouettes than their more abstractly shaped chunky counterparts. While there’s no wrong way to wear platform sneakers with dresses, we prefer putting those extra inches to work and wearing platform sneakers with long maxi dresses.

    Colorful Sneakers

Street style is all about catching the eye and nothing pops on concrete quite like a colorful sneaker. Create a dopamine-inducing color-blocked ‘fit by wearing sneakers and accessories in the same vibrant shade and a dress in a contrasting color. Alternatively, you can go for a monochromatic moment by picking two-tone sneakers that match your dress and outerwear. Last, not least, but certainly low-lift, check your closet for dresses featuring colorful prints or patterns and choose a pair of sneakers in a similar color family for a cohesive, more subtle look.

    Adidas Sneakers

Another celebrity favorite, Adidas sneakers are among the most streamlined styles in this roundup. While the brand does deliver some stellar color combinations, its classic Samba and tennis shoe styles in black and white are especially great options to wear with dresses thanks to their versatility. One option is to amp up these sneakers’ timeless vibe by wearing them with an equally timeless midi dress in a jewel tone or elevated print. Alternatively, you can use these sneakers to ground an over-the-top playful look by wearing them with tiers of sheer tulle for a coquettish statement look.

Otokunor offers support to embattled goat farmer in Berekum, calls on MoFA to assist him

Agricultural Economist and National Democratic Congress (NDC) member, Peter Boamah Otokunor, has extended support to Semanhyia Farms’ founder and CEO, Fredrick Benneh Frimpong.

Semanhyia Farms has been in the spotlight for the past two weeks due to an order from the Berekum traditional authorities, instructing the relocation of the goat farm for customary reasons.

The situation has left many Ghanaians bewildered and frustrated, questioning why the goat farmer was initially allowed to commence operations when it was well-known that local religious beliefs prohibit goat rearing.

They consider it unfortunate that Mr. Frimpong has been given a mere two weeks to cease operations after five years.

In response, Mr. Otokunor, who also runs a commercial farm took to Facebook to express his support for the young man.

“As a Ghanaian agripreneur, you are confronted with a myriad of economic, managerial and human resource challenges. Having to deal with such a socio-cultural challenge in addition will be the biggest blow ever to agribusiness. It is very heart breaking. Farming In Africa, please kindly reach out and let’s explore possible ways of support and partnership to relocate.”

Additionally, he called on the Food and Agriculture Ministry to also come to the rescue of Semanhyia Farms during this challenging period for him.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on the Minister of food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong to take swift action in aid of Semenhyia Farm, to save the business of the young agriprenuer and the hundreds of employees working there.
Agriculture remains the most potent avenue for exponential economic growth and massive job creation. It remains in govt interest to support and encourage young minds who venture into it, other than scare them away from it.”

It remains to be seen whether his calls on the Agric Ministry would heed his calls for support for the young man.

“I want to include Atta Mills’ autopsy report in the family’s file” – Odumna Queen Mother discloses

Queen Mother of Odumna has shared details of why she is demanding the autopsy report of the Late President Atta Mills.

According to her, the autopsy report of all the prominent people who died in their clan has been file in their document.

Unfortunately, that of Atta Mills after several years has still not been handed over to them despite several demands over the past 12 years.

“If you understood me correctly, I mentioned that I would file it. Every notable individual who passed away in our residence has their autopsy report documented in our records. I am the 3rd Queen mother and have predecessors. When I assumed this role, I thoroughly examined everything. So, there is no reason for the autopsy report of Atta Mills to be absent from our records,” she explained to the media.

Meanwhile, the Kyedomhemaa of Ekumfi Asaman, Nana Enyinfua III, has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assistance in obtaining the autopsy report that reveals the cause of President John Evans Atta Mills’ death in 2012.

Emphasizing her role as the head of the maternal family, she expressed that neither she nor the state of Ghana possesses information about what led to the demise of their royal family member, who served as the President of Ghana at the time of his passing in 2012.

Nana Enyinfua made this request while leading a delegation from the Oduma Clan of Ekumfi, the maternal family of the late Prof Mills, to express gratitude to the President for renovating the final resting place of the late President Mills at the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday, January 12, 2024.

Here are tips to avoid broken heart while watching football match involving the Black Stars

You leave every Black Stars game feeling anxious and emotionally spent, much like you would from watching a gripping thriller

Here are some suggestions to help you get through the emotional rollercoaster for devoted sports fans who are determined to watch every Black Stars game but are looking for ways to deal with heartbreak following the game.

    1. Keep your expectations low: Adopt a mindset that “he that is down fears no fall.” If you don’t have high expectations, you can enjoy the victories of the Black Stars more and lessen the blow of losses because you weren’t expecting too much in the first place.

    2. Detach your emotions: In the world of football, expect the unexpected. Approach it with a mindset that acknowledges it as a game where wins and losses are inherent parts of the experience. Avoid excessive emotional investment.

    3. Eat first: Ensure you eat before the match, as the outcome might affect your appetite. If the game goes well, you’ll have the energy to celebrate; if not, at least you won’t go to bed on an empty stomach.

    4. Get a distraction after the match: Following a disappointing loss, engage in a positive distraction like watching a fun movie or listening to upbeat music.

To prevent going to bed disheartened after a disappointing match, consider diverting your focus. Football, as a joyful pursuit, fosters unity and harmony among a nation’s citizens. Victories by the national team unite people, setting aside differences for collective celebration.

Conversely, losses evoke a shared sense of disappointment. The following tips provide a practical approach to supporting the national team without succumbing to overwhelming emotions when expectations fall short.

  • 4 ways you damage your hair by applying styling gel

4 ways you damage your hair by applying styling gel

Using styling gel can be beneficial for achieving your desired look, but it’s important to exercise caution. Excessive or improper use of styling gel may result in potential damage to your hair.

Here are four ways styling gel could harm your hair:

    1. Drying effect: Many styling gels contain alcohol, which can have a drying effect on your hair. Alcohol is used in gels to help them dry quickly and provide a firm hold.

However, over time, this can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and brittleness. Dry hair is more prone to breakage and split ends.

    2. Buildup and residue: Regular use of styling gel can result in product buildup on the hair and scalp. This residue can be difficult to remove with regular shampooing and may require the use of clarifying shampoos.

The buildup can make hair look dull and lifeless, and it may also contribute to scalp issues such as dandruff.

    3. Weighing down hair: Some styling gels are heavy and can weigh down your hair, making it look flat and lacking in volume. This is particularly true if you use too much gel or if the product is not properly washed out.

Over time, the weight of the product on the hair strands can lead to stress and breakage.

    4. Chemical ingredients: Some styling gels contain harsh chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances that may be irritating to the scalp and damaging to the hair.

Ingredients like sulfates and parabens, commonly found in hair care products, can strip the hair of its natural oils and contribute to dryness and damage.

To minimize the potential damage from styling gel, consider the following tips:

Choose a quality product: Look for styling gels that are free from harsh chemicals and alcohol. Choose products that provide a strong hold without excessive drying.

Limit usage: Avoid using styling gel every day to give your hair a break and prevent product buildup. When you do use it, try not to apply excessive amounts.

Proper removal: Make sure to thoroughly wash out the styling gel from your hair. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to cleanse and moisturize your hair.

Regular hair care: Maintain a good hair care routine, including regular trims, deep conditioning treatments, and using products that promote hair health.

Remember that everyone’s hair is different, so what works for one person may not work for another.

Pay attention to how your hair responds to styling gel and adjust your usage accordingly. If you notice signs of damage, consider exploring alternative styling products or methods.

Cyclone Belal prompts school closures in Mauritius

Schools in Mauritius have been closed due to the imminent threat of heavy rains leading to potential flooding.

The nearby French island of Réunion has been placed on the highest cyclone alert level after being struck by the powerful Tropical Cyclone Belal.

Authorities are urging residents to remain indoors, and emergency services are currently not authorized to intervene. Unfortunately, extreme weather conditions have already resulted in fatalities in both Réunion and Mauritius.

In Réunion, the body of a homeless man was discovered in the resort village of Saint-Gilles on the west coast shortly before the cyclone alert was escalated from red to purple on Monday. Tragically, the man had declined evacuation efforts.

In the Mauritian village of Baie-du-Tombeau, a 75-year-old man lost his life due to drowning on Sunday.

Additionally, two surfers braved the storm at sea in La Preneuse in western Mauritius. While one managed to reach the coast safely, the whereabouts of the other surfer are currently unknown.

Please exercise extreme caution, follow all safety guidelines, and stay tuned for further updates on this developing weather situation.

“How can a star be black? Name the team Black Soil – Shatta Wale after Black Stars defeat

Renowned Ghanaian reggae dancehall artist, Shatta Wale, has openly expressed dissatisfaction with the Black Stars’ disappointing performance in their AFCON opener against Cape Verde.

The multiple award-winning artist suggested that the GFA officials should consider renaming the team ‘Black Soil’ because, in his view, the stars are not delivering noteworthy results.

In a video commentary, Shatta Wale argued that the team’s name, ‘Black Stars,’ should be substituted with ‘Black Soil,’ indicating his belief that the squad may not achieve significant success, contrary to their past performances in the tournament.

“How can a star be black? Name the team Black Soil so they can at least produce something because black soils are the best”, he stated.

  • SSNIT set to boost efforts in enrolling additional self-employed individuals

SSNIT set to boost efforts in enrolling additional self-employed individuals

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) plans to enhance its efforts to include more individuals in the informal sector and self-employed category in Ghana into the state-operated Tier One pension scheme.

Building on the achievements of the previous year, marked by the introduction of the Self Employed Enrolment Drive (SEED), SSNIT envisions a more assertive strategy to promote the initiative.

The goal is to draw in a greater number of individuals in this demographic, ensuring a more secure future for them upon retirement.

The Director-General of SSNIT, Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang, who announced the Trust’s resolve last Thursday, said “We have developed a good initiative that will help many people to guarantee a better future in retirement and we must sustain the campaign this year and beyond.”

    Expansion

The count of self-employed individuals enrolled in SSNIT witnessed a more than fourfold increase in the last two quarters of the previous year.

Starting from approximately 14,200 in May, the figure surged to over 57,000 by the end of the last month, and additional enrollments are anticipated.

This remarkable growth is credited to the vigorous efforts of the management of the state-operated pension scheme, with plans for further intensification in the coming year and beyond.

The campaign’s primary objective is to include a substantial number of workers from the informal sector of the economy into the pension scheme.

The director-general emphasized that although SSNIT has successfully enrolled tens of thousands of self-employed individuals into the scheme within a brief period, the upcoming task remains formidable. He asserted that “we will not relent but continue to push harder to increase the numbers into the hundreds of thousands and the millions per our laid down plan of action because we see the potential”.

According to the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), approximately 600,000 out of the 6.7 million self-employed individuals in the country currently possess some form of pension coverage.

This implies that a substantial 6.1 million self-employed persons lack any form of pension coverage, presenting an opportunity that the managers of the tier one pension scheme intend to capitalize on.

Of the 6.7 million independent contractors in the nation, the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) projects that 600,000 have pension coverage.

The managers of the tier one pension scheme hope to take advantage of the staggering 6.1 million self-employed individuals who do not have any kind of pension coverage.

    Sustainability

Regarding the sustainability of the pension scheme, Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang reiterated the commitment of the scheme’s managers to ensure the continued viability of the pension system, which is crucial for both formal and informal workers.

He affirmed that the scheme remains solvent and viable, emphasizing the Trust’s responsibility to sustain it as one of the continent’s premier state-run pension programs, despite challenges from various sources.

The director-general of SSNIT pointed to initiatives like SEED and highlighted that the current scheme could be further enhanced with increased participation, hence the ongoing campaign.

Additionally, he mentioned that SSNIT is actively ensuring that its investments yield optimal performance, generating the necessary funds to consistently meet its obligations to workers on pension.

Dr Ofori-Tenkorang said much as some of the investments of SSNIT were not performing as expected, those equities were minute, “however, we are working around the clock to determine the appropriate action to take in the best interest of the scheme”, he assured.

He argued once more for people who haven’t joined the scheme to do so and not use unfavorable rumors about how it is run to avoid it.

K.T. Hammond requests disqualification of Sammy Binfoh, extends petition to NEC

Adansi Asokwa MP, Kobina Tahir Hammond, extends petition to NPP National Vetting Committee, seeking disqualification of all three opponents in parliamentary primaries.

Earlier, on January 2, 2024, Hammond petitioned the Ashanti Regional Vetting Committee, seeking the disqualification of his main opponent, Sammy Binfoh Darkwa.

The regional committee cleared both candidates, prompting Hammond to escalate the petition to the National Vetting Committee.

Dissatisfied with the decision of the Ashanti Regional Vetting Committee, Hammond expressed discontent with the ruling by NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

K.T. Hammond asserts that his rivals, notably Sammy Binfoh Darkwa, the Managing Director of the Ghana Publishing Company, do not meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the parliamentary primaries, as outlined in Article 12(4) and (7) of the party’s constitution.

He urges the National Vetting Committee to disqualify his opponents based on the allegations he has raised against them, citing their purported lack of affiliation with the NPP and minimal contributions to the constituency’s advancement.

Simultaneously, the campaigning for the January 27 primaries has escalated, with aspirants actively engaging delegates in preparation for the upcoming election.

  • All you need to know and do to achieve your new year resolutions

All you need to know and do to achieve your new year resolutions

Every game has a start time. There is also a time when the game ends, and the players can review their performance, design new strategies and start all over again without carrying the weight of the past.

You may lose miserably, but fortunately, the game ends. You have another opportunity to dust yourself, wipe the slate clean, review your strategies and start again with high expectations for the next game.

The game of life is not different. There are days we win, and there are days we may not be able to achieve all that we have planned to do.

The seasons of life provide an opportunity to reset our expectations no matter what has happened in the past.

Unfortunately, we rush from one activity to another without allowing ourselves to review the progress made, put the past flaws behind us and look forward to the future with renewed hope.

The start of a new year may seem like an ordinary day, week or month, but it offers an extraordinary opportunity for a fresh start. Hence, the popularity of New Year’s resolutions.

The new year is an opportunity to reflect on your life, start afresh and set new goals.

In this new year, you can wipe the slate clean and start again regardless of what happened in the past year. You have an incredible opportunity to examine your life journey in line with our values and highest aspirations.

Many ideas abound, but in this article, I share a couple of principles and steps that can aid you so you can set meaningful goals and achieve them.

    A. Timeless truths about goal setting:

First, there are three truths to remember as you set your goals for 2024 and beyond. These three truths hold generally:

    1. We underestimate what we can achieve in 10 years and overestimate what we can achieve in 1 year. You may not earn your 1st million in 2024, but you can before the decade ends. Your life may not change radically in one year. However, you can set the foundation for a great future in one year.

    2. We unlock our greatness by doing hard things rather than crossing a finish line. You can push yourself a little further. Do not strive to finish first. Focus on what matters to your life. Life is not a race.

    3. We undermine our efforts when we feel unworthy of the goals we set for ourselves. You deserve every goal you set for yourself. Heaven has put it in your heart. If you work towards it, then you can achieve it.

    B. Steps to effective goal setting:

Spend time and effort to make your new year goals specific, measurable and time-bound, though they may be audacious. For every goal you set, you must do the following:

    1. Identify the benefits you can derive from achieving your goals and the cost of neglecting to do what you must do. These will keep you focused and motivated when you feel like giving up.

    2. Develop a plan to anticipate and address potential barriers or challenges that may cause you to deviate from your intended course. Life events happen, but rarely should they be the excuse for our lack of progress.

    3. Act on the basic ideas you can implement immediately to generate momentum and set yourself up for success in the major areas. Consider the tortoise because it only makes progress by sticking its neck out. Set up the first meeting, make the call, and investigate what you need to do to start work on your goals.

    C. Develop your goal package:

We enhance our chances of success when our goals are integrated and serve a bigger purpose in line with our values. It is about balance and harmony in our lives.

Our lives have many facets, and our goal-setting process must respect that. Do not adopt someone’s goal as your goal because that sounds interesting and trendy.

A way to address this is to set goals for every aspect of your life. This process helps you to avoid setting goals that may undermine or conflict with other aspects of your life.

Consider setting a goal in each of the following areas of your life including Faith, Fitness, Family, Finances, Work and Professional Development. Most importantly, your goal package must align with the person you aspire to become. Do not prepare a shopping list of goals. You can set new ones when you achieve the one you have already set.

    D. Act on your Goals:

Once you have used the steps and ideas above to set your goals, you have to act on your goals.

The magic happens when you begin to act on your goals. William Hutchison Murray beautifully captures the power of taking action on our goals.

He notes, “Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.”

The above is an encouragement to start working on your goals even when you do not have all your ducks in a row.

Starting is great, but you need to keep your momentum. You can sustain your progress by sharing your goals with someone you can trust to hold you accountable. We go farther by going together.

    Happy New Year!

    ….be of good cheer.

  • Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta highlights crucial debt restructuring deal

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta highlights crucial debt restructuring deal

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta hailed the debt restructuring deal as a pivotal moment for Ghana’s economy.

Speaking on PM EXPRESS BUSINESS EDITION with George Wiafe, he emphasized its significance in expediting the reduction of the country’s debt to sustainable levels.

The interview will air on JOYNEWS this Thursday, January 18, 2024. Mr. Ofori-Atta acknowledged the challenging negotiations with official creditors but commended the Finance Ministry, government officials, and the cooperation of creditors for reaching this agreement.

He asserted that this accomplishment demonstrates the commitment of all partners to assist Ghana in restoring debt sustainability in alignment with the IMF’s program targets.

    Background

On January 12, 2024, the Finance Ministry declared reaching an accord with the Official Creditors Committee on debt treatment within the G20 common Framework.

Following months of negotiations regarding the restructuring of Ghana’s debts, the OCC members, after a conclusive round of meetings last week, unanimously settled on December 2022 as the deadline.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva welcomed the debt treatment agreement in a statement.

According to her, “This agreement clears the path for IMF Executive Board consideration of the first review of Ghana’s three-year Extended Credit Facility Arrangement in the next few days”.

She added that “The Government of Ghana looks forward to further engaging with the Official Creditors to ensure prompt implementation of the agreed terms”.

Proposed terms reached with creditors for restructuring Ghana’s debt

The Finance Minister had kept details of the “term sheet” confidential. However, he didn’t dismiss the possibility of December 2022 as the deadline for restructuring Ghana’s debts.

Mr. Ofori-Atta also acknowledged that Ghana would initiate debt servicing after the four-year moratorium, with payments starting after five years. Interest rates on these debts are anticipated to range between 2-3%.

Additionally, Mr. Ofori-Atta mentioned ongoing discussions with official creditors to finalize the Memorandum of Understanding for the deal.

He noted that “the terms of the agreed debt treatment are expected to be formalised in an MoU between Ghana and the official creditors in the coming days”.

But will this affect the proposed date for the IMF Board meeting, the Finance Minister responded “No because the agreement reached with them is enough for the IMF Board to meet”.

“We are prepared for this Board meeting and hopeful that Ghana will pass this first review”, the Finance Minister added.

The minister further stated that bilateral agreements with each official creditor committee member will be used to execute the Memorandum of Understanding.

  • GSS initiates 2024 Ghana Business Survey data collection phase

GSS initiates 2024 Ghana Business Survey data collection phase

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) would like to notify the public that as of January 15, 2024, the field data collection for the 2024 Ghana Integrated Business Establishment Survey Phase I (IBES I) has officially started.

The Service has trained and deployed approximately fourteen thousand (14,000) Field Officers nationwide for this data collection initiative.

IBES I is designed to encompass a comprehensive list of all business entities across the country.

During the field data collection period, the Field Officers will visit every structure and space in their assigned areas to enumerate all identified business entities.

This includes businesses operating in structures, those in open spaces, mobile businesses, and virtual businesses. Thus, the survey aims to cover all business entities conducting activities in Ghana, irrespective of location, status, or size.

The primary objective of IBES I is to compile a comprehensive list of businesses, capturing essential characteristics that contribute to the development of a robust Statistical Business Register and other key statistical indicators, ultimately enhancing national development. Key outcomes of IBES I include:

    1. Providing updated data on the activities, locations, ownership, ages, and sizes of businesses to inform policy, planning, and the monitoring of business growth and national development programs.

    2. Facilitating the revision of key macroeconomic indicators such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Producer Price Index (PPI), and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) by capturing the current structure of Ghana’s economy.

    3. Assessing the employment status of workers employed by businesses to bridge the gap between firms’ labor needs and available skills.

    4. Investigating the characteristics of the informal sector to guide the development of policies aimed at formalizing the economy and improving the welfare of workers in various sectors.

The public is advised that Field Officers can be identified by their Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES) Vests and Identification Cards. Cooperation from the public is encouraged to ensure the success of the field data collection exercise.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) expresses gratitude to institutions, organizations, and individuals for the support received and seeks further cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of this crucial national exercise.

Landslide in Tanzanian mine claims the lives of 22

A landslide at the Ng’alita mine in Bariadi district, Simiyu region, resulted in the tragic death of twenty-two individuals, as reported by district commissioner Simon Simalenga.

The incident occurred on Saturday when a group engaged in mining activities in a restricted area due to heavy rains, according to Simalenga’s statement to Reuters news agency.

Upon learning of the incident, President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her profound sadness at the loss of lives.

“These fellow Tanzanians were small miners in the area, trying to earn a living for themselves, their families,” she said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Mr Simalenga said he was initially told that there were 19 to 20 people trapped in the mines, but that 22 bodies ended up being retrieved.

According to quotes attributed to Faustine Mtitu, the acting commander of the region’s fire and rescue forces, as reported by AFP news agency, the search has been concluded. Mtitu stated that he is “convinced that there are no more bodies trapped in the rubble.”

Mr. Simalenga mentioned that approximately three weeks ago, a group of individuals commenced mining activities in the mineral-rich area. Subsequently, the government implemented safety procedures in response. The area had been restricted due to persistent heavy rains, leading to flash floods.

“The regional mining officer visited them and stopped them from mining as it was working on the required procedures” Mr Simalenga said.

Unregulated and illegal mining is common in Tanzania, which is one of the largest gold producers in the world.

  • Central Region reports 664 fire incidents with zero fatalities in 2023

Central Region reports 664 fire incidents with zero fatalities in 2023

In 2023, the Central Region reported 664 fire incidents compared to 570 in 2022, indicating a 16.5% increase. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, unlike 2022, which had two deaths among the 570 cases.

The Regional Office of the Ghana National Fire Service expressed concern about the elevated rate of increase. Bushfires rose from 114 in 2022 to 159 in 2023, mainly attributed to farmers and hunters.

Domestic fires increased from 195 in 2022 to 234 in 2023, primarily caused by electrical faults due to poor wiring and LPG accidents, according to DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Regional Public Relations Officer.

“Burning of rubbish also caused some commercial fires,” he added.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) provided specifics on additional incidents managed by the Service, including 125 road traffic extrications, one flood response, and the handling of six bee attack situations that led to 10 injuries.

“There were four well rescues where two died and two survived, one rescue from a septic tank and one case of electrocution,” he explained.

However, in 2023, the Service received 34 prank calls. DOIII Hudu, expressing concern about this occurrence, emphasized that fire safety is a collective responsibility. He urged the public to refrain from making prank calls and to diligently adhere to all protocols to ensure the safety of everyone.

Highlighting bushfires as a major concern, he stated that the Service would persist in educating stakeholders about the laws against bush burning and the associated consequences to reduce such incidents.

“It’s illegal to burn bushes and you will be held accountable if your actions lead to bushfires,” he warned.

The Fire Officer highlighted that the Service’s primary challenge was covering extensive distances to respond to distress calls.

This, he observed, led to increased response times, resulting in some incidents spiraling out of control. Consequently, he appealed for the establishment of more fire stations to safeguard lives and property.

Works and housing ministry denies Asenso-Boakye’s involvement in alleged property sale

The Ministry of Works and Housing has refuted claims that the Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye, was involved in a dubious attempt to sell government property.

In a widely circulated video, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, asserted that there was a collaboration between a former Chief Justice and the Sector Minister to sell the official residence of the late Justice Samuel Marful-Sau.

However, the ministry has denied any such allegations.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Ministry’s Public Relations department rejected the allegations, emphatically asserting that  “has been no such sale of the property.”

The Ministry went on to explain that the current changes occurring at the late Justice Marful-Sau’s official residence are a component of the Government Redevelopment Programme (GRP).

According to them, “The GRP was necessitated by the need to find residential accommodation in Accra for the ever-growing number of public and civil servants.”

Ketu North youth leave NPP to join NDC over poor NPP governance

Some young individuals in the Ketu North Constituency of the Volta Region, purportedly affiliated with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), have defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Their decision is attributed to dissatisfaction with the perceived ineffectiveness of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government. The group officially declared their switch on January 11, 2024.

Among them are former NPP executives in the region, expressing their inability to continue endorsing what they view as a faltering administration.

In an interview with Citi News, Bernard Akpabli Agbeli, a former youth organizer of the NPP in the area, stated that these youths have pledged their support for the NDC and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

“Already, I have declared my total support for John Mahama and the NDC. We will campaign for them, and we will make sure that we win the presidential and will form the majority in the parliamentary election. I was the polling station youth organiser, formerly polling station organiser; I was constituency youth organiser as well.”

“So I’ve served this party [NPP] for about 27 years now. Everybody knows me very well in the Volta Region here, and the leadership of the party in the region also knows me; they know how hard-working I am. This government is not ruling us well. So it is because of that I took this decision,” he said.

  • Shalimar Abbuisi shares insights into her arrest and deportation

Shalimar Abbuisi shares insights into her arrest and deportation

Shalimar Abbuisi, the spokesperson for the ‘The New Force‘ political movement, has addressed the public after being deported by the Ghana Immigration Service.

In an interview on JoyNews on Friday, January 12, 2024, she accused the Immigration Service of unjustly deporting her.

During her custody, she claimed that the officers were primarily focused on revealing the identity behind the ‘man in the mask’ campaign, a detail she refused to disclose.

“… I’ve been active in Ghana in the media space. Not just in Ghana, but I’ve been active in the media space for some time. Been travelling back and forth, been involved in charity work and humanitarian work in Ghana for some time.

“And after the video came out with me as the spokesperson for the new force, I got a call from immigration to come to their headquarters for some questions. So, I went willingly. When they invited me a couple of days after I went, they started to ask me all kinds of questions about my residence permit, which I’ve been travelling with back and forth for years.

“It’s been recently extended by another immigration officer. It was obtained through an official immigration officer, and I never had any problems with it. So they started to question me about the permit. They asked me about certain documents that I had never seen before, and they asked me questions about the new force. So, I was very confused about why I was there. And then eventually, after some hours of questioning, they told me I had to stay there overnight,” she narrated.

The spokesperson for ‘The New Force’ continued to narrate her encounters during her time in the custody of the immigration service. She revealed that numerous individuals were confined to the service’s cell, enduring deplorable conditions. She expressed concern that some of these detainees had been held for months without undergoing the necessary legal procedures.

“So, I stayed in the cell overnight at immigration. And the things that I’ve seen there were just. I don’t have words for it. It was very shocking. There were so many people there. I think more than 15 people from all different nationalities, Africans, Arabs, Asian people. And it was shocking to see that some of them were already there for nine months without a hearing, without a lawyer, without anything, and in just inhumane circumstances.

“Keep in mind, it was men and women together in the same cell. Some of them didn’t even have the chance to make a phone call. They were stuck there for months. Nobody to call, no lawyer, no counsel, sharing mattresses. It was baffling, the things that I’ve seen there,” she said.

She further indicated that after being brought to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) by the immigration service, she was informed that she was being placed under arrest without facing any charges.

“Then the next morning, I was transferred to NIB. I didn’t know where I was going. They just took me out of the cell. Then they transferred me somewhere. I didn’t know where I was going, so I was just being pushed in a van and they took me somewhere after I found out I was at NIB. And that is where they told me I’m under arrest. I still didn’t know what exactly for at that moment because there were no official charges. So, yeah, that’s how it went.”

Abbiusi said that she spent about six days at the immigration cell and one day at the NIB cell with all forms of human rights violation before her release after the court granted her bail.

After her re-arrest, she spent one day in a cell at the NIB before being deported.

Belgian national Shalimar Abbiusi, who rose to prominence as the face of the New Force movement, was detained and brought before a Ghana Immigration Service court on charges of making a fraudulent declaration in order to be granted a residency permit.

She was later arrested again and deported from the nation after the state on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, dropped the charges against her.

The young boy, known as Abdul according to an eyewitness, tragically lost his life while waiting for his father in the cargo area of their Motor King tricycle, situated in front of Jiso Plaza. They were planning to continue their journey to work.

Unfortunately, a Benz tipping truck carrying sea sand, suspected to be traveling from Kumbungu to town, accidentally struck the boy, resulting in his untimely demise.

According to an observer who spoke to Citi News, the tipper truck seemed to lose control when a Mazda saloon car crossed its path. This caused the truck driver to inadvertently run over the young boy, causing severe injuries to his organs.

“The saloon car, in an attempt to prevent an accident, hit the tricycle the boy was seated in, leading to him falling off the car. Then came the tipper truck, which ran over his head. The boy just gave up at the spot because the tipper was loaded with sea sand. It’s really a sad day,” an eyewitness, who gave his name only as Ezekiel, recounted the incident to Citi News.

In the meantime, a fourth vehicle, identified as a tricycle commonly known as “yellow-yellow” in Tamale and Pragyia in other regions of the country, swerved to avoid a head-on collision with the Mazda saloon car. Unfortunately, it ended up falling into a nearby gutter, resulting in damage to the tricycle.

The lifeless body of the deceased has been transported to the hospital, while both the tipper truck and the Mazda saloon car have been delivered to the police station for further investigation.

John Mahama expresses confidence in election victory, rules out Supreme Court contest

John Mahama expresses strong confidence in winning the upcoming December elections, affirming that there will be no need to challenge the results in the Supreme Court.

Instead of engaging in legal disputes, Mahama underscores the significance of vigilance and united efforts within the party to secure a triumph.

Addressing party supporters during his “Building the Ghana We Want Tour” in Dzodze, Volta Region, he outlines his vision for a transparent and equitable election process.

He urges the party to remain watchful throughout the electoral process in December and collaborate to achieve victory collectively.

“I’m not going to the Supreme Court because I know I’m not going to lose, maybe that person will be going to the Supreme Court. The election is going to be decided at the polling station and the coalition centre and that’s where the NDC is going to be.

He also said the upcoming election will be the best in the history of Ghana.

“We won’t go to the Supreme Court again because we know we won’t get justice. We are going to police this election and it is going to be the best policed election in the history of Ghana and we are going to follow the results every step of the way until the final result is declared.”

Every human being is a witch or wizard – Osofo Kojo Bentil claims

Prominent spiritual leader Osofo Kojo Bentil, the Founder and Leader of Onyame Kese Krom, has made a profound statement, suggesting that every person has the inherent capability to be a witch or wizard—an insight often overlooked by many.

Osofo Kojo Bentil shared this thought-provoking revelation during an appearance on TV3’s Confessions, hosted by Miss Nancy. In the interview, he expressed concern about the tendency of black people to be slow in recognizing certain truths.

“It is sad oftentimes that we as black people always want to be the last people to come into anything,” he remarked.

“I said we are all witches and wizards, but we just do not know.”

The spiritual leader went on to elaborate on his perspective, linking rebellion to the first sign of witchcraft.

“Let me show you a simple trick,” he added.

“It says rebellion is the first sign of witchcraft, and who rebels? Every single one of us rebels, growing up at a point in our lives, teenage years. So, according to the Bible Yardstick, it means all of us have the tendency to become witches and wizards to a particular degree.”

Osofo Kojo Bentil questioned why African and black people seem to be the last to realize this inherent potential. Drawing parallels with the Western world, he pointed out the existence of schools dedicated to witchcraft, where practitioners evolve into top scientists.

“It is an energy, it is a spirit when you see something the average person is not seeing,” Osofo Kojo Bentil explained. “When you’re about to go into a car, something in you tells you to sit home, don’t go. That is your soul giving you information about what is happening that is not manifested physically, and all of us have that ability,” he further explained.

He emphasised that being in tune with this energy doesn’t necessarily involve harmful practices, stating, “It doesn’t take a witch to kill somebody; even in the churches, we kill.” According to Osofo Kojo Bentil, it is an individual’s characteristic, and those who resist the idea may themselves possess the qualities of a witch.

The assertion that we are all witches and wizards, according to him, sheds light on the latent potential within each person, waiting to be recognized and understood.

  • PNC affirms 2024 election timetable despite dismissed Dani Baah’s counterclaim

PNC affirms 2024 election timetable despite dismissed Dani Baah’s counterclaim

A statement signed by General Secretary Janet Nabla dismisses Mr. Moses Dani Baah’s denunciation of the published election timetable of the People’s National Convention (PNC).

The statement emphasizes that Mr. Moses Dani Baah is no longer a member of the party. The PNC had previously announced regional elections scheduled from January 15th to January 31st, 2024, national elections on March 2nd, 2024, and presidential elections on March 24th, 2024.

Mr. Baah, in a counter press statement, claimed to be the Chairman of the party and asserted that the party had not discussed nor agreed upon dates for the internal polls.

Subsequently, the party has issued another statement clarifying that Mr Baah “is not a member of our party, and we urge you to disregard any statements or actions attributed to him”.

“We would like to appeal to the media to ignore any statements or actions attributed to Moses Dani Baah, as he is an imposter and not a member of the Peoples National Convention”, the statement continued, adding: “It is worth noting that a judge from the High Court, Justice Yao Gauwu, ruled that Dani Baah and his cohort have no right to prevent the party and the General Secretary from functioning just because they have taken

legal action against the General Secretary for their dismissal”.

The PNC, thus, said its originally announced date for the internal polls still hold.

    Read the full statement below:

MOSES DANI BAAH IS NOT A MEMBER OF THE PEOPLES NATIONAL CONVENTION

We are writing to bring your attention to the false claims being made by an individual named Moses Dani Baah.

He is currently purporting to be the chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC).

However, we would like to clarify that Moses Dani Baah is not a member of our party, and we urge you to disregard any statements or actions attributed to him.

It is important to note that there was a previous individual named Moses Dani Baah who held the position of chairman in the PNC.

However, he was dismissed from the party due to fraudulent activities.

Specifically, he withdrew 1.7 million Ghana cedis from the party’s funds without

    accounting for it.

Additionally, he and his accomplice withdrew and spent 150,000 cedis that were designated for party offices.

Furthermore, Dani Baah and his accomplice held a meeting inviting party chairmen and secretaries from the various regions. However, their invitation was rejected by the participants.

Despite this, they proceeded to call the media and falsely announced it as a National Executive Committee Meeting (NEC), which requires the attendance of nine regional chairmen out of the 16 regions.

They failed to meet this requirement.

Due to these financial irregularities and misconduct, Dani Baah and his cohort were suspended and subsequently dismissed from the PNC for violating Article 14(1a and 1b) of the party’s constitution by taking the party to court without first seeking internal redress. This information was communicated to all media houses at the time.

Initially, the party believed that Moses Dani Baah and his cohort would provide valuable wisdom due to their old age if given the positions.

However, it became apparent that they were using the party for their personal gain.

In 2020, Dani Baah and his accomplice sued Ghana, demanding taxpayer money for an additional pension package on top of the ex gratia received as former members of

    parliament.

The PNC should have learned from this and voted against them.

The NEC’s decision to suspend and subsequently dismiss them aligns with the appropriate course of action.

Furthermore, prior to becoming executive members of the PNC, Dani Baah and his cohort used the PNC letterhead to solicit funds from a Ministry.

The Ministry, upon receiving the letter, forwarded it to the PNC leader at the time, Dr. Mahama.

As the National Women’s Organizer, I was present when Dr. Mahama called Dani Baah and his accomplice to inquire about the letter and the intended use of the funds.

They were unable to provide a response.

More recently, it has come to our attention that Dani Baah and his accomplice changed the ownership of a party vehicle to their personal names.

We promptly reported this matter, and the Attorney General’s office has confirmed the change of ownership.

They have directed the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the case. If not for the slow

pace of justice, this man and his accomplice should already be in jail.

We would like to appeal to the media to ignore any statements or actions attributed to Moses Dani Baah, as he is an imposter and not a member of the Peoples National Convention.

It is worth noting that a judge from the High Court, Justice Yao Gauwu, ruled that Dani Baah and his cohort have no right to prevent the party and the General Secretary from functioning just because they have taken

legal action against the General Secretary for their dismissal.

The ruling was sent to all media houses,

so it is surprising that Dani Baah is still receiving attention from the media.

Anyone who provides resources or support to Dani Baah does so at their own risk, as he has been expelled from the PNC since 2022.

We appreciate your cooperation in clarifying this matter and ensuring that accurate information is disseminated to the public. Please feel free to reach out to us if you require any further clarification or information.

Note: The election timetable provided by the party still holds.

    Thank you

    PNC: Service with Honest

Adentan court sentences Mobile banker to 6 years in prison for forgery, embezzling GHS162,700

Adentan Circuit Court sentences mobile banker, Grace Addy, to six years in prison for embezzling GHC162,700 belonging to customers of an undisclosed Rural Bank.

Following an audit of her accounts, the 29-year-old was found guilty of collecting money and diverting it through other mobile money accounts for personal use and travel abroad.

Grace Addy pleaded guilty to charges of forgery of documents and two counts of stealing. The court sentenced her to two years for forgery, three years for stealing GHC20,000, and six years for stealing GHC142,700, with sentences to run concurrently. The complainant, a Rural Bank manager, reported the theft after an audit in December 2023.

The audit revealed that Grace Addy collected money from customers but failed to account for it to the bank. Investigations found that she had been collecting money from customers between January and December 2023 but did not deposit it with the bank. Instead, she transferred the funds to other mobile money numbers for personal use.

Grace Addy also forged receipts to deceive a customer, Salifu Alhassan, into believing she had paid GHC40,000 when she had only paid GHC20,000.

She informed the police that she stole GHC162,700 and gave it to three men to facilitate her travel abroad. However, she failed to lead the police to these individuals.

In her statement, she mentioned giving the entire sum to a person named Hamisu at Libya Quarters, Madina, to process her travel documents, with the intention of repaying customers after her arrival abroad.

  • Efforts to go digital in the absence of employment is a costly joke – Kofi Amoah tells Bawumia

Efforts to go digital in the absence of employment is a costly joke – Kofi Amoah tells Bawumia

Ghanaian entrepreneur and economist, Dr. Kofi Amoah, has voiced his disapproval of the nation’s political leaders, alleging misappropriation of public funds instead of concentrating on fostering an atmosphere conducive to job creation.

He argues that endeavors like the current administration’s emphasis on digitalization would be ineffective without a concurrent focus on job generation.

Dr. Amoah’s remarks were triggered by a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who announced the introduction of a digital solution aimed at eradicating ‘ghost’ names from the government payroll.

Dr. Kofi Amoah asserts that many individuals facing economic hardship are like ‘walking ghosts,’ a consequence of the policies implemented by the current government.

“As much as DIGITALIZATION is presented as a spoke in the wheel of development, it’s an expensive joke,” wrote Citizen Kofi, as he is popularly known, on Friday, January 12.

“It’s crazy to build an expensive payment police system in a bankrupt country where the majority of the people have no payments coming to them because they have no JOBS!,” he posted.

“Amendments to Anti-Gay Bill could be completed by March” – Anyimadu-Antwi

The Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, expressed confidence that the committee would complete the amendment of clauses in the bill concerning the promotion of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, commonly known as the anti-gay bill, between February and March of this year, facilitating its passage.

The bill, designed to criminalize LGBT activities, has generated controversy since its introduction in Parliament by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, and other lawmakers.

Despite Speaker Alban Bagbin’s assurance that the anti-gay bill would be passed before the Christmas break, the clause-by-clause amendments at the consideration stage were not concluded.

During an interview with Citi News, Mr. Anyimadu-Antwi expressed his confidence that the remaining amendments would be completed when Parliament resumes, allowing for the bill’s passage.

“We were at clause four, so we did clauses one, two, and three. And then we have clause four, clause six, clause eight, clause nine up till the end of it. So when we get back in Parliament, we have amendments in almost all the clauses, and it ends at clause 24.”

“And I am very sure that in February or March, we will be able to go through what is otherwise known as the LGBT, and then everybody will be free,” he said.

  • Cheddar urge Ghanaians to pay attention to his message and not his personality

Cheddar urge Ghanaians to pay attention to his message and not his personality

It’s been almost a week since Ghanaian entrepreneur Nana Kwame Bediako disclosed his presidential aspirations. His revelation, especially as the mysterious ‘Man In the Mask,’ has stirred discussions among Ghanaians.

People are now scrutinizing his background and eagerly awaiting insights into his vision for Ghana’s future.

However, there is a segment that has raised concerns about his public image, juxtaposing it with his recent political ambitions.

The 43-year-old has been frequently seen socializing with prominent celebrities, both locally and internationally, including Floyd Mayweather, sparking questions about the alignment of his public persona with his newfound political goals.

This topic surfaced during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, January 12, 2024.

The man known as Cheddar thinks that people might have had the wrong idea about him.

He claims that instead of living the life of a simple celebrity, “it’s me cherishing my relationships with people and letting them respect my vision.”

In light of this, he asked Ghanaians to shift their focus back to the main points of his speech rather than its auxiliary elements.

“They are just looking at the glittery part and who is the star and all of that. Don’t just concentrate on the messenger, you need to concentrate on the message hence that’s why I came with a mask. Because I was asking the country which one are you choosing? Are you choosing the face that you want to find? Or you’re going to look for the message that this person is bringing?” he quizzed.

On January 7, the mysterious ‘Man in the Mask,’ previously known for his discreet campaign, ‘The New Force,’ stepped into the limelight, revealing himself as the self-proclaimed ‘messiah’ with a vision to rebuild Ghana and Africa.

During an impromptu press conference arranged due to the last-minute cancellation of the Ghanaian government’s rally called ‘The Convention 2024,’ Nana Kwame Bediako assured that he posed no threat.

The intended event in Accra had gathered influential African thought leaders, including Professor PLO Lumumba, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao from Zimbabwe, and Peter Obi, to engage in discussions about key challenges hindering the continent’s development.

Papa Kwesi Nduom aims for Municipal Chief Executive in Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem

Founder of Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has definitively announced that he will not be the PPP’s presidential candidate. He expressed a desire to vie for the position of Chief Executive of the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem municipality instead.

This statement came in response to inquiries regarding his potential candidacy for the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections. Dr. Nduom, the PPP’s founder, conveyed his response through a post on Facebook.

“The position I want to be elected to serve in. This is for those who have been agitating to get me to join the 2024 Presidential race, note this. What I want, is the opportunity to contest in an election to become the Chief Executive of Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem municipality. I want to show our people in practical terms how to administer an area for the benefit of the citizens. Clean environment, good infrastructure, jobs, education for all, quality healthcare etc,” his post read.

Before pursuing the presidency, Mr. Nduom was actively involved in Ghanaian politics.

In 2000, he contested the parliamentary seat for the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem constituency under the Convention People’s Party but faced defeat.

However, he successfully reclaimed the seat in 2004. During President Agyekum Kuffour’s administration, he served as the Minister of Energy and later as the Minister for Public Sector Reform.

Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom has participated in Ghana’s presidential elections on three occasions:

CPP Presidential Candidate – 2008 Elections: In July 2007, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom resigned from government to become the Conventions People’s Party (CPP) presidential candidate in the 2008 general elections. Despite vigorous campaigning alongside running mate Michael Abu Sakara Foster, the CPP did not secure a victory. Dr. Nduom received only 1% of the total votes cast, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged as the winner with Professor Evans Atta Mills as its leader.

PPP Presidential Candidate – 2012 Elections: In 2012, Dr. Nduom founded the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) after leaving the CPP. He contested the presidential elections with Brigitte Dzogbenuku as his running mate. Although he faced defeat for the second time, Dr. Nduom garnered 64,267 votes, revealing campaign funding and assets transparency. The PPP became the third-largest party in the country, but the NDC, led by John Dramani Mahama, won the presidential mandate.

PPP Presidential Candidate – 2016 Elections: Representing the PPP, Dr. Nduom participated in the 2016 presidential elections, declaring it his “final round.” He stated that he would not seek the presidency again if unsuccessful.

“The 2016 elections will be the last round, it will be the final time for Ghanaians to vote for me. If I don’t win, I won’t contest the presidency again,” said Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom in July 2016.

The electorates once again did not give Mr. Nduom the nod at that year’s polls. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo emerged winners of the presidential elections.

Gas station manager in the Western Region remanded for alleged GHS1.2m fraud

Manager of Gaso Filing Station in Wassa Gyapa, Western Region, Sylvester Koomson, has been remanded by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for allegedly embezzling and defrauding the company of over GH¢1.2 million.

Koomson, who is the cousin of the filing station owner, Collins Opoku, managed the station for over three years, during which he allegedly committed the crimes.

The accusations against Koomson include diverting company funds intended for supplier payments into his own pocket, resulting in a debt of over GH¢1.2 million for the company. Collins Opoku entrusted the management of the filing station to Koomson based on trust and family ties.

Upon returning from engagements and receiving tips from workers, Opoku conducted a financial audit, substantiated by supplier confirmations of the station’s indebtedness.

Collins Opoku revealed that the audit also uncovered fraudulent activities by his brother, Joseph Teye, who managed general merchandise for him.

Teye allegedly defrauded Opoku through over-invoicing, over-pricing, non-payments, and underpayments of merchandise, resulting in multimillion-Ghana cedi losses. Teye was accused of stealing construction materials meant for projects and smuggling them to Takoradi.

Both Sylvester Koomson and Joseph Teye were arrested and remanded on the same charge of defrauding the company of millions of cedis. They were arraigned before the Tarkwa Circuit Court, with ASP Oduro as the investigator and SUP Juliana Essel Dadzie as the prosecutor.

The court refused bail for the accused, remanding them to police custody until January 19, 2024, to allow for further investigation in collaboration with the Economic and Organized Crime Organization (EOCO). Presided over by Her Ladyship Hattia Abena Manu, the court rejected the plea for bail from the accused’s counsel.

Ralph Poku Adusei denies alleged connections with Togbe Afede amid Joe Wise’s claims

Private legal practitioner and NPP parliamentary candidate hopeful for the Bekwai constituency, Ralph Poku Adusei, has strongly refuted any associations with Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and President of Asogli Traditional Area.

This comes in response to a controversial statement made by Joseph Osei-Wusu, aka Joe Wise, the sitting member of Parliament (MP) for the Bekwai constituency and First Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament.

During an interaction with delegates, the MP claimed that Poku Adusei, a key contender in the NPP’s parliamentary primaries in Bekwai, could only withdraw from the race if the paramount chief intervened.

In a telephone interview with Asaase News, Adusei vehemently denied engaging in any business transactions with the traditional ruler.

“I have no business dealings with Togbe Afede, let alone a client,” Poku Adusei said, adding: “Such claims are attempts to discredit me, and it won’t work.”

Describing the claim as unfounded, Poku-Adusei urged the public to disregard such allegations and assured them that he remains committed to his principles and values.

“I challenge Joe Wise and all his assigns to provide evidence to support what I consider to be frivolous claims. Until they do, I will continue to focus on the welfare and well-being of the good people of Bekwai,” he added.

On Thursday, January 11, 2024, Nana Dwamena Akenten II, the newly installed paramount chief of the Offinso Traditional Area, pledged allegiance to Sikadwa (the Golden Stool), Asantehene, and Asanteman Council.

The ceremony, held at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, symbolizes the authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over the Offinsomanhene and the Offinso Traditional Area.

Top paramount chiefs of Asanteman, including Sampamanhene, Nana Yaw Sammor-Duah II; Seikwamanhene, Nana Kwaku Dwumah Ankoana II Fiaprahene; Tuabodommanhene, Nana Agyei Kooko Beyeeman; Berekummanhemaa, Nana Akosua Ameyaahene; and Goasomanhene, Nana Akwasi Bosomprah, were present at the event.

Before swearing the oath to Otumfuo, Nana Dwamena Akenten II was carried in a palanquin through the principal streets of Manhyia, as reported by The Asante Nation on X.

The process of filling the Offinso Stool gained significant attention after Otumfuo turned down a candidate proposed by Offinsohemaa Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko.

Following months of deliberation, Nana Amoako Poku, a 68-year-old royal from the Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family, was nominated and accepted by Otumfuo, leading to the removal of Offinsohemaa.

Kwesi Nyantakyi dismisses claims of president being “in His Pocket”

Former Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has emphatically refuted a widely circulated false quote that claimed he asserted having President Nana Akufo-Addo “in his pocket.”

The fabricated quote gained traction after investigative journalist Anas Armeyaw Anas’s number 12 exposé in 2018, resulting in Nyantakyi’s condemnation and subsequent resignation from his roles at the FA and CAF.

Speaking on Starr Chart with Bola Ray, Nyantakyi vehemently denied ever making such a statement, labeling it as propaganda intended to smear his reputation and disrupt his political aspirations.

He challenged Anas Armeyaw Anas to produce any tape featuring him uttering those words, emphasizing that the statement is entirely false.

Addressing the disrespectful cartoons that emerged during the controversy, Nyantakyi expressed his frustration, stating, “I never ever said that, but I saw cartoons of Kwesi Nyantakyi reduced into a spider with Nana Akufo-Addo’s protruding in my pocket. It was very disrespectful.”

During the exposé, Nyantakyi acknowledged that he had conversations about business with a group of people posing as investors.

He clarified that the group had misrepresented itself as a sizable business conglomerate that was able to invest $2 billion in a refinery located in Ghana.

“I said that I am a Ghanaian, I know politicians and once they want to invest I can lead them to these politicians and I don’t think there was anything bad about that,” he continued.

“These are people who falsely represented themselves as large business conglomerates and that they could be a refinery in Ghana, which cost over $2 billion and that is how it all came about.”

Nyantakyi justified his participation by saying that he saw no inherent issues with mediating talks between politicians and possible investors.

Kaakyire Kwame Appiah explained that he lost control while driving on the wet road on Tuesday, January 9. He attributed the accident to the wet conditions, poor state of the road, and a brake failure.

Despite the harrowing incident, he reported that all four occupants of the vehicle survived with minor injuries and have been promptly taken to the hospital.

“I was driving along the Nkawkaw dual carriage road in my car with 3 others. It had slightly rained and some parts of the road were not good. All of a sudden the car lost control and I started shouting “Jesus, Jesus”.

  • Akufo-Addo to be dragged to court over refusal to sign Witchcraft Bill and others – Speaker

Akufo-Addo to be dragged to court over refusal to sign Witchcraft Bill and others – Speaker

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced that Parliament intends to seek legal interpretation regarding President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to withhold his signature from certain bills passed by the House.

In the previous year, President Akufo-Addo declined to sign the Criminal Offences Bill of 2022, the Witchcraft Bill, and the Armed Forces Bill of 2023. His rationale for withholding assent was attributed to the financial implications associated with these bills.

The Speaker of Parliament stated that, in response, Parliament plans to take the matter to court to seek a legal interpretation of the situation.

“I want to end up by assuring you that I will definitely be in touch with my good friend the president, his excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo even though I disagree with him in his refusal to assent to our bills and I have given notice that we will be in court about this matter,” he said.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, maintains that President Akufo-Addo is not qualified to judge whether the bills in question are constitutional because that is the exclusive jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. As such, the Supreme Court alone should address any claims of abuse.

The Ghana Armed Forces Amendment Bill, introduced by MP Francis-Xavier Sosu, was specifically mentioned by President Akufo-Addo as having financial costs related to substituting life in prison for the death penalty.

The Speaker of Parliament, in an official response to the president, stressed, “The determination of any unconstitutionality is the sole purview of the Supreme Court, not the President. Hence, if there were concerns about Parliament acting beyond its constitutional authority, i.e., acting ultra vires, the appropriate course of action would be an action before the Supreme Court, not an executive declaration of unconstitutionality.”

“Again, the constitutional discretion vested in the presiding officer of Parliament, as per Article 108 and subject to Article 296, suggests that any allegations of misuse of this discretion should be contested in a court of competent jurisdiction, rather than being pre-emptively adjudicated upon by the President.”

Chairman Wontumi denies disrespecting Asantehene, threatens legal action against media outlets

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has refuted a news report that accused him of disrespecting the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during a vetting process of NPP parliamentary aspirants last week.

He said that the news report, which was published by the Punch newspaper and AkomaFM/Onuaonline, both affiliated to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), was false, malicious, misleading, and aimed at creating a rift between him, the NPP, and the Asantehene.

He said that he had never made any statement or gesture that would warrant such a disgraceful and unfounded reportage, and that he had always served the Asantehene with pride and dignity as the regional chairman of the NPP.

He said that the writers and sponsors of the news report could not provide any evidence to support their claims, and that they hid behind vague phrases like “it is alleged” and “he is reported to have”.

He said that this was a calculated move to tarnish his reputation and distract him from his focus of leading the party in the region to break the eight-year cycle and make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the next president of Ghana in 2025.

He gave the Punch newspaper, Broadcastergh.com, and AkomaFM/Onuaonline a 24-hour ultimatum to retract and apologize to him and the Manhyia Palace, or face legal action.

He urged the party faithfuls and the good people of Asanteman to disregard the news report and treat it with the contempt it deserves.

He said that he respected the traditions and customs of the Asante Kingdom, and that he would not allow anyone to destroy the cordial relationship between him, the NPP, and the Asantehene.

I have lost 6 policemen, 8 soldiers, 15 bodyguards who used to work for me – Obinim

Head pastor of the International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim, expressed his nostalgia for the privileges he once enjoyed as a pastor.

He shared that in the past, his security detail included six (6) policemen, eight (8) soldiers, and fifteen (15) bodyguards who accompanied him everywhere to ensure his protection.

However, he noted that the current situation is different, and he now either travels with a fellow pastor or walks alone during his trips.

In a TikTok live session monitored by GhanaWeb, Bishop Daniel Obinim advised the public to be cautious with their lives, especially when experiencing success and financial prosperity.

“People are saying they like the current Obinim. Brother, what I have gone through in life, that I am not in the limelight anymore, is a lot. Right now, when I am walking, no one follows me. There is no soldier or bodyguard apart from my driver, Pastor Raymond.

“Previously, I was followed by 6 policemen, 8 soldiers, national security, Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) officials, and 15 bodyguards, but today, where are they? No more. I walk alone or with my pastor,” he said.

Obinim is not as vocal in the public sphere as he once was, though it is unknown why he would make such assertions.

  • Even if Otumfuo strips naked, respect his throne – Blakk Rasta slams Wontumi

Even if Otumfuo strips naked, respect his throne – Blakk Rasta slams Wontumi

Controversial media figure Blakk Rasta has condemned the Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, for reportedly disrespecting the king of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Blakk Rasta expressed strong disapproval of Chairman Wontumi’s comments, which appear to undermine the authority of Otumfuo, deeming them deplorable and unacceptable given the revered status of the Ashanti Kingdom.

He rebuked Chairman Wontumi for his lack of respect toward Otumfuo, emphasizing that his popularity and wealth should not lead him into a conflict with the Asantehene.

During the UrbanBlend show, monitored by GhanaWeb, Blakk Rasta urged Otumfuo to address Chairman Wontumi, whom he labeled as “arrogant,” so that he could learn a lesson about speaking against authorities.

“You cannot disrespect Asantehene [Otumfuo Osei Tutu II]. Even if he strips naked and runs around like David, respect the throne that he sits on. That kingdom is so historically powerful and bigger than Asantehene. So, if you disrespect the Asantehene, you are not only disrespecting one king, you are disrespecting all the kings that ever sat on the throne, and you are disrespecting that ancient kingdom.

“How on earth should Chairman Wontumi open his mouth because of some dirty galamsey money that he has, sit back and say that he has built his own kingdom and that you have your police, you have your military, and that Asantehene cannot order you around? It means that I will spew every kind of nonsense into your face and tell you anything that I want to. That’s what it means,” he said.

In addition, he urged President Akufo-Addo to see to it that Chairman Wontumi is held accountable for his derogatory remarks.

“Apart from Asantehene summoning the arrogant Chairman Wontumi, I call upon the president of the country [Akufo-Addo]. If he’s truly the president and is in charge, you need to call this man to book.”

    Background

Chairman Wontumi is said to have received summons from the Manhyia Palace for allegedly undermining Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

Onuaonline.com reported that Wontumi questioned the Asantehene’s authority last week at a meeting of the NPP parliamentary primaries vetting committee.

According to the report, the party chairman declared, “I have established my kingdom,” and he would not think twice to challenge the Asantehene if he disagreed with him on any matter. He made this declaration without being provoked.

“I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)” the report quoted Wontumi as stating.

The incident report highlighted the involvement of Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the NPP and chairman of the vetting committee, during the incident.

Nana Kwaku Duah, Kokosohene, who was also present at the time, reportedly expressed strong disapproval of Wontumi’s statement.

“For you to even say those words in my presence is unacceptable, and I’m not happy about your weird and disrespectful behaviour,” Kokosohene reportedly fumed at Wontumi.

The Asanteman Traditional Council is reported to have written to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the NPP, after the incident to arrange for Chairman Wontumi’s appearance at the Manhyia Palace and to provide an explanation for his alleged disrespect for Otumfuo.

In response to the claims, Chairman Wontumi urged the general public to disregard the information because there was no way he could disrespect Otumfuo insisting that “it is a calculated attempt by some elements to bring disunity between himself and Otumfuo.”

Clash erupts between police, COCOBOD Anti-Illegal Mining team in Ashanti Region

Tensions escalated on January 11, 2023, in Brofoyedru, Ashanti Region, as a near-violent clash unfolded between the police and the Ghana Cocoa Board’s (COCOBOD) Anti-Illegal Mining team.

The COCOBOD team, engaging with cocoa farmers and miners to combat illegal mining’s harmful effects on cocoa farms, discovered allegations of police officers extorting money from illegal miners.

A confrontation ensued when COCOBOD officials questioned ten police officers returning from illegal mining sites, leading to a pursuit.

The conflict intensified at a police barrier in Brofoyedru, with threats of violence from the police.

Despite attempts to conceal their identity, COCOBOD officials successfully documented the police vehicle details and identified officers involved—P. A. Abdellah and one Amidu.

“The COCOBOD team was informed that the Police have arrived, going round taking money and removing parts of the excavators from the miners. The Police later met COCOBOD officials on their way who tried to stop them but the police refused, upon reaching a barrier at Brofoyedur, they were obstructed by one of the COCOBOD’s vehicles and the two teams clashed, one of the Senior Police Officers threatened to shoot the COCOBOD officers in the heat of confrontation” Head of COCOBOD’s team, Prof. Michael Kwateng narrated.

Prof. Michael Kwateng, head of the COCOBOD Anti-Illegal Mining Unit, expresses concern over multiple reports implicating the police in illegal mining, causing distress among farmers facing continuous cocoa farm invasions.

Despite the frustrations, he emphasizes COCOBOD’s steadfast commitment to combat illegal mining and protect farmers and their essential cocoa farms.

Urgently, COCOBOD officials call on Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the alleged involvement of police officers in illegal mining.

The impact of illegal mining and smuggling resulted in COCOBOD falling short of its projected purchase of 850,000 tonnes of cocoa last year.
