Why did you touch our Eurobonds after all the money you made from COVID-19 – Michael Blackson to govt

Renowned American comedian and actor of Ghanaian heritage, Michael Blackson, has once again criticized the Ghanaian government, claiming it has jeopardized his investment.

Previously, Blackson revealed that he bought Eurobonds to fund his school in Agona Nsaba (Michael Blackson Academy), but he has faced difficulties in recovering his investment.

He explained that he chose to invest in Eurobonds, believing it would support the long-term financial sustainability of the free school he established.

However, he said, “Ghana decided to use our money to pay their debt to China or whoever and leave us hanging.”

Frustrated by the circumstances, he publicly addressed the finance minister regarding his concerns.

On September 23, 2024, he took to social media to express his dissatisfaction, sharing a post from the Ministry of Finance that highlighted the assistance the country received during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He questioned why the government had to interfere with their investment.

The post read, “If Ghana received that much money for Covid, why did they touch our Eurobonds? Why did they use people’s life savings? We still need answers.

“Ghana has received US$1 billion allocation from the historic US$650 billion IMF SDR allocation to boost global recovery.”

  • Coalition Against Galamsey criticizes National House of Chiefs for rejecting mining ban

Coalition Against Galamsey criticizes National House of Chiefs for rejecting mining ban

The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has responded to comments made by the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, who dismissed calls for a complete ban on all mining activities in Ghana.

The chief has instead advocated for stronger regulations to ensure responsible mining practices.

However, the Ghana Coalition highlighted that illegal mining not only depletes natural resources but also causes widespread pollution and degradation of water bodies, jeopardizing the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

The coalition underscored the importance of a united front among stakeholders, including the National House of Chiefs, in tackling the challenges posed by galamsey.

They insisted that a clear and definitive stance from the National House of Chiefs could mobilize communities and foster compliance with environmental laws, ultimately contributing to more sustainable mining practices in the country.

“The Ghana Coalition against Galamsey, with a sense of pressing urgency, has noted with utter disappointment the position of the National House of Chiefs conveyed through its president, purporting to reject any ban on all forms of mining. The Coalition further notes the House of Chiefs’ notable silence and its belated position, now published.”

“Should this statement be correctly understood as it is relayed, the Coalition notes that the National House of Chiefs has regrettably reinforced and incentivized the rampant and wanton destruction of Ghana’s environment and the commonwealth bequeathed to us by our forebears.”

“The seemingly rather shocking endorsement of illegal mining is particularly worrisome, considering the constitutional mandate entrusted to the body to act as custodians of the customary resources of the various communities led by its members,” an excerpt of the statement said.

In a recent statement, the coalition pointed out that the involvement of some traditional leaders in illegal mining has worsened the situation.

They urged the National House of Chiefs to adopt a strong stance against galamsey and promote sustainable mining practices that protect the environment and improve the well-being of communities affected by these operations.

The coalition believes that chiefs play a crucial role in guiding their people and setting a constructive example in the fight against illegal mining.

This call comes after Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs, dismissed suggestions for a total ban on mining activities in Ghana.

Instead, he pushed for tighter regulations to ensure that mining is conducted responsibly.

In response, the Ghana Coalition pointed out that illegal mining not only exhausts natural resources but also leads to severe pollution and destruction of water bodies, threatening the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

The coalition emphasized the need for unity among all stakeholders, including the National House of Chiefs, to effectively address the challenges posed by galamsey.

They argued that a clear and decisive position from the National House of Chiefs could inspire communities to adhere to environmental regulations, ultimately promoting more sustainable mining practices across the nation.

Democracy Hub vows to remain steadfast in campaign against illegal mining

A protestor, Naa Densua, highlighted that galamsey activities have devastated numerous forests and severely polluted water bodies.

The organization initiated a three-day protest on September 21 to raise awareness about the harmful impact of illegal mining. However, numerous demonstrators were arrested on the second day.

As a result, the streets were deserted on the third day of the protest.

Speaking on JoyNews the Pulse on September 23 on what the group’s next line of action would be, Naa Densua said, “We will go out again. You know why? My grandchildren do not deserve to be drinking galamsey water ever.”

The police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, one of the leaders of the demonstrators, following the arrest of several protestors on Sunday for various offenses.

Although the police launched a manhunt, Mr. Barker-Vormawor has stated that he is not evading authorities and is willing to cooperate.

In the meantime, Mr. Barker-Vormawor has been taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service in relation to the recent protests.

  • Tanzanian police take action against upcoming opposition protest

Tanzanian police take action against upcoming opposition protest

Authorities have taken action against a planned protest organized by Tanzania’s leading opposition party.

According to Chadema, several of its leaders were detained on Monday. Additional arrests occurred in the Magomeni district of Dar es Salaam, where protesters were assembling for a demonstration against purported killings and abductions of government critics.

This crackdown has heightened concerns about the possibility of increased political repression in the East African nation as local elections approach, followed by next year’s national vote.

Video footage posted on X by Chadema showed police arresting the party chairman, Freeman Mbowe, as he arrived “to lead a peaceful protest”.

In another post, police were depicted outside the residence of deputy chairman Tundu Lissu prior to his arrest. Authorities reported the detention of 14 individuals, including Mbowe and Lissu, for violating the ban on protests.

Before the arrests took place, police were observed surrounding the homes of both party leaders.

Lissu, who narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in 2016 after being shot 16 times, had previously shared on social media platform X that three police vehicles filled with officers in riot gear were stationed outside his home.

“They’ve informed me I’m directed to be taken to the Regional Crimes Officer. I’m getting ready to go,” he said.

Over the weekend, Dar es Salaam police chief Jumanne Muliro cautioned that the proposed rally would disrupt public order and that his officers would enforce strict measures to prevent it.

Since Saturday, riot police equipped with water cannons have been deployed in strategic locations throughout the city.

Chadema has charged that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government is reverting to the oppressive methods of her predecessor, John Magufuli.

Hassan assumed office in March 2021 after Magufuli’s unexpected passing and initially seemed to promote a more democratic environment by lifting restrictions on opposition gatherings and the media.

However, Chadema now claims that security forces are involved in the disappearances of several members and the murder of Ali Mohamed Kibao, a senior party official who, according to authorities, was attacked with acid and beaten to death last month.

In a speech shared on X on Sunday, Mbowe asserted that the planned protest would remain peaceful.

“We are neither carrying any weapons nor planning to violate the peace as some people allege,” he said. “We have seen the deployment of armed police officers in the city but we are ready to face them.”

When Chadema last tried to hold a rally in August, police arrested hundreds.

Rights groups and Western governments, including the United States, have criticised the crackdowns as “antidemocratic”.

  • Diddy faces legal battle after celebrating 30 years in music industry

Diddy faces legal battle after celebrating 30 years in music industry

Rap icon Sean “Diddy” Combs celebrated his 53rd birthday two years ago, with a grand party at his $61 million mansion in Beverly Hills.

The event drew a star-studded crowd, including the likes of Jay-Z, Travis Scott, Mary J Blige, Kehlani, Tinashe, Chris Brown, and Machine Gun Kelly, who gathered to honor his influential career.

The occasion also marked his 30th anniversary in the music industry—three decades during which he built an entertainment empire and reshaped hip-hop, both as an artist and producer, working with legends such as Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, and The Notorious B.I.G.

Fast forward to 2024, and Diddy’s career is now under heavy scrutiny.

In a legal case filed in New York, Combs faces accusations of kidnapping, drugging, and coercing women into sexual acts, sometimes using firearms and threats of violence.

Earlier in March, the same Beverly Hills mansion that hosted his opulent birthday party was raided by police, who reportedly seized supplies allegedly intended for orgies, dubbed “freak offs,” including drugs and over 1,000 bottles of baby oil.

Combs has denied all allegations and entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday, September 17. This court case follows a series of lawsuits filed by multiple women against the music mogul over the past year.

Here is how the allegations against Mr Combs have stacked up:

    16 November 2023: Cassie’s lawsuit

Casandra Ventura, a singer and model known as Cassie, was signed to Mr Combs’ record label and dated him for more than a decade.

But in a civil lawsuit, she said the mogul had used his position of power to “set the groundwork” for a “manipulative and coercive romantic and sexual relationship”.

Her lawsuit included graphic descriptions of violent abuse, alleging that Mr Combs “regularly beat and kicked Ms Ventura, leaving black eyes, bruises, and blood”.

She described parties known as “freak offs” – drug-fuelled, days-long sexual performances – which Mr Combs allegedly coerced women into, and filmed for his own pleasure.

Ms Ventura also accused the musician of sexual abuse and rape, and claimed that many of these incidents were witnessed by his “tremendously loyal network” who “were not willing to do anything meaningful” to stop the violence.

The lawsuit also alleged that Mr Combs destroyed a car belonging to US rapper Kid Cudi, to dissuade him from dating her.

Mr Combs strenuously denied the allegations and accused Ms Ventura of extortion.

They settled the case for an undisclosed amount a day after it was filed in New York, with Mr Combs maintaining his innocence.

November to December 2023: More lawsuits allege sexual assault

In the weeks after settling Cassie’s lawsuit, Mr Combs was accused of sexual assault dating back to 1991 by multiple women.

One lawsuit was filed anonymously by a woman who claimed Mr Combs and another man had coerced her into sex.

In a second, Joi Dickerson-Neal accused the star of drugging and sexually assaulting her when she was a college student in 1991. She also claimed he filmed the attack and showed it to other people without her consent.

A third woman, Liza Gardner, filed court papers accusing Mr Combs and another man of raping her and her friend more than 30 years ago, when she was 16.

Ms Gardner also alleged that Mr Combs had turned violent days after the attack, choking her so hard that she passed out.

In the lawsuit, she said Mr Combs had become irate while trying to track down her friend, because he was worried she would inform “the girl he was with at the time”.

The lawsuits all came shortly before the expiration of the New York Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily allowed people who said they had been sexually abused to file claims, even after the statute of limitations had expired.

Mr Combs denied all the allegations, and his spokesperson called the lawsuits a “money grab”.

    December 2023: Underage sex claim

Another woman sued in December, claiming she was “sex trafficked” and “gang raped” by Mr Combs, former Bad Boy Records president Harve Pierre and another man in 2003, when she was 17.

In court papers, the woman, known only as Jane Doe, alleged she was given “copious amounts of drugs and alcohol” before the attack and was left in so much pain that she could barely stand or remember how she got home.

In response, Mr Combs said he “did not do any of the awful things being alleged”, while Mr Pierre said the “disgusting allegations” were “false and a desperate attempt for financial gain”.

    December 2023: Diddy’s denial

On 6 December, Mr Combs responded to the flurry of lawsuits with a statement on his Instagram page.

“ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,” he wrote. “For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy.

“Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday. Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”

    February 2024: Accusations of grooming

Music producer Rodney Jones Jr, who produced nine tracks on 2023’s The Love Album, sued Mr Combs in February 2024, accusing the star of making unwanted sexual contact and forcing him to hire prostitutes and participate in sex acts with them.

In court papers filed in New York, Mr Jones also claimed that Mr Combs tried to “groom” him into having sex with another man, telling him it was “a normal practice in the music industry”.

Mr Combs’ lawyer, Shawn Holley, called Mr Jones “nothing more than a liar” and described his claims as “pure fiction” that could be discredited by “overwhelming, indisputable proof”.

17 May 2024: Cassie assault video leaked

CCTV footage emerged showing Mr Combs assaulting Cassie Ventura in the hallway of a Los Angeles hotel in 2016.

The pictures, broadcast by CNN, showed a man pushing Ms Ventura to the floor and kicking her while she was on the ground. He later attempted to drag her by her shirt and throw an object at her.

A day later, Mr Combs apologised, saying: “I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”

Ms Ventura later posted a statement highlighting the lifelong impact of domestic violence. “It broke me down to someone I never thought I would become,” she wrote.

21 May 2024: Former model sues

Model and actress Crystal McKinney accused Mr Combs of drugging her and forcing her to perform oral sex in the bathroom of a New York City recording studio in 2003.

Two days later, Mr Combs was sued again by April Lampros, who alleged four instances of sexual assault between 1995 and about 2000.

Ms Lampros claimed she met the musician in 1994 while a student at the Fashion Institute of Tecnhology, and that an initially romantic relationship “quickly turned into an aggressive, coercive, and abusive relationship based on sex”.

In one incident, she claimed the star forced her to take ecstasy and have sex with his then-girlfriend.

July 2024: Combs maintains innocence as eighth lawsuit filed

Former adult film star Adria English claimed she was “groomed into sex trafficking over time” in a number of events between 2004 and 2009 at Mr Combs’s star-studded parties.

His lawyer Jonathan Davis responded: “No matter how many lawsuits are filed it won’t change the fact that Mr Combs has never sexually assaulted or sex trafficked anyone.”

    10 September 2024: No-show at court hearing

Mr Combs failed to attend a virtual hearing for a lawsuit filed against him by Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith, a Michigan inmate who claimed the star drugged and sexually assaulted him at a party in Detroit in 1997.

The no-show led to a default judgment against Mr Combs, who was ordered to pay Mr Caredello-Smith $100m (£75m).

The judgment was later set aside, after the musician’s lawyers filed an appeal.

11 September 2024: Girl band star sues

Dawn Richard, a former singer in Mr Combs’ girl group project Danity Kane, filed a suit against the star.

The singer, who later joined Mr Combs in the band Diddy Dirty Money, alleged that the musician sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions by touching her body, as well as verbally abusing and overworking her.

16 September 2024: Combs is arrested

The star was arrested in a Manhattan hotel room after a grand jury indictment.

His lawyer said the star had co-operated with authorities and voluntarily relocated to New York in anticipation of the charges.

“These are the acts of an innocent man with nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court,” he added.

17 September 2024: Charges and details of ‘freak offs’ revealed

In an appearance at the US District Court in New York, Mr Combs was charged with sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

In an indictment that was unsealed at the same time, prosecutors alleged that he also engaged in kidnapping, forced labour, bribery, and other crimes.

They described him as the head of a criminal enterprise that abused women, using threats of violence to force them into participating in drug-fuelled orgies with male prostitutes.

These “freak offs” were “elaborate and produced sex performances” and were highly organised parties, prosecutors said.

Mr Combs’ associates allegedly booked hotel suites, recruited sex workers and distributed drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine and oxycodone to coerce partygoers into sex and keep them “obedient”.

His staff allegedly arranged travel for the victims and organised the supply of intravenous fluids to help them recover from the parties, which sometimes lasted for days.

Prosecutors also alleged that Mr Combs taped the “freak offs” and would use the footage to pressure his victims into silence.

If convicted, the musician faces a sentence of 15 years up to life in prison.

Mr Combs’ lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, declared his client’s innocence, and described the “freak offs” as consensual.

“Is it sex trafficking?” he asked. “Not if everybody wants to be there.”

Mr Combs pleaded not guilty to the charges.

But he was denied bail after prosecutors argued that he posed “a significant risk” to the trial, reporting that he had “already tried to obstruct the government’s investigation of this case, repeatedly contacting victims and witnesses and feeding them false narratives of events”.

The judge cited the star’s anger issues and history of substance abuse as reasons for keeping him detained until the trial.

“My concern is that this is a crime that happens behind closed doors,” he said.

Mr Combs’ lawyers appealed the decision, offering to place the star under the watch of a round-the-clock private security team.

However Judge Andrew L Carter Jr said that, even under those terms, Mr Combs could still use employees to contact witnesses.

He will be detained at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center until his trial.

No driver is dead, motorcyclist, passenger in critical condition – Kofi Kinaata

Kofi Kinaata has revealed that the motorcyclist and his passenger who collided with his vehicle are in critical condition.

He made this clarification while denying reports that his driver died at the scene.

After the accident, rumors spread about several fatalities, including that of one of Kofi’s drivers and a passenger on the motorcycle.

However, the artist has confirmed that he and his team are unharmed, stressing that only the motorcyclist and his passenger are in serious condition.

He added, “They weren’t wearing helmets, so this outcome is unfortunately expected.”

It is not sinful to stake lotto, bet, have multiple piercing – Brother Sammy

Ghanaian gospel artist Brother Sammy has shared his perspective on Christians labeling activities like betting, eating pork, and getting piercings as sinful.

He expressed that he does not view these activities as immoral and finds it perplexing why Christians often categorize enjoyable aspects of life as sinful.

He called for an end to using Christianity as a tool to intimidate others while affirming his position on these matters.

During an appearance on United Showbiz on UTV, Brother Sammy revealed that he participates in betting regularly, seeing it as a way to increase his wealth.

He noted that many people pray for financial breakthroughs but frequently dismiss betting as a viable option for quick income.

The gospel artist also addressed what he sees as hypocrisy among pastors who permit their children to take part in American lotteries while discouraging others from similar activities.

Although he has never played the lottery, Brother Sammy stated that he would not preach against it. He pointed out that he knows someone who has helped build churches using money earned from betting.

Additionally, he criticized the way individuals with tattoos and piercings are treated in churches, highlighting societal judgments they face.

“Even when boys with tattoos and piercings enter churches, they look at them with judgmental eyes, it’s not fair. They judge Rastafarians but allow women to wear weaves and synthetic hair. We need to be truthful to each other”.

Brother Sammy emphasized that he does not, and will never, adhere to the moral standards that constrain society and limit their freedom of choice.

  • Kenya to deploy additional 600 police officers to Haiti to combat gang violence

Kenya to deploy additional 600 police officers to Haiti to combat gang violence

Kenya has committed to sending an additional 600 police officers to Haiti in the coming weeks to assist in combating gangs that have taken control of much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and surrounding areas.

This increase will raise the number of Kenyan personnel, who have been deployed gradually since June to support Haiti’s struggling police force, to a total of 1,000.

During a visit to Haiti, President William Ruto expressed his support for transforming the current Kenya-led security initiative into a comprehensive United Nations peacekeeping operation.

Several other nations have also pledged to contribute at least 1,900 additional troops.

The situation in Haiti remains volatile, with a UN human rights expert warning that gangs are expanding their reach into new territories, resulting in further displacement.

The UN Security Council is expected to meet by the end of the month to consider renewing Kenya’s existing mandate for another year, which could pave the way for a full UN mission in 2025.

This development would enhance funding and resources for the operation, which has faced challenges due to inadequate equipment.

While addressing the Kenyan officers at their base in Port-au-Prince, President Ruto praised their achievements over recent months.

“There are many people who thought Haiti was mission impossible, but today they have changed their minds because of the progress you have made.”

He expressed confidence that they would prevail over the gangs and committed to seeking improved equipment for them.

The nearly 400 Kenyan officers on the ground were going out on patrol “working hand-in-hand with Haitian forces to protect the people and restore security”, Ruto said.

“Our next batch, an additional 600, is undergoing redeployment training. We will be mission-ready in a few weeks’ time and look forward to the requisite support to enable their deployment,” he added.

Nonetheless, there has been criticism in Haiti regarding the absence of a decisive action against the gangs.

A UN human rights expert who recently visited the area stated that the mission is under-equipped and requires helicopters, night vision goggles, and drones.

“The Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), authorised by the UN Security Council in October 2023, has so far deployed less than a quarter of its planned contingent,” William O’Neil said on Friday.

The smuggling of arms and ammunition into the country persisted despite an international embargo, enabling gangs to expand their influence into new regions, he noted.

The UN expert, who traveled to the southeastern part of the country, reported that the police lacked the logistical and technical resources needed to combat the gangs effectively.

He quoted a policeman in Jérémie as saying: “The situation borders on the impossible. We have to learn to walk on water.”

Sexual violence had drastically increased and more than 700,000 people were now displaced, Mr O’Neil said.

“This enduring agony must stop. It is a race against time.”

He said the solutions already existed, but efforts had to be “redoubled immediately”.

“It is crucial to stifle the gangs by giving the MSS Mission the means to be effective in supporting the operations of the Haitian National Police, as well as to implement the other measures provided for by the United Nations Security Council, including the sanctions regime and the targeted arms embargo.”

Nollywood actress Mojisola Adebanjo has candidly admitted that her looks and allure have contributed to landing several acting roles.

During a recent interview with Potpourri, she revealed that her appearance, along with her facial expressions and fashion sense, has frequently swayed casting choices in her favor throughout her career.

“Yes, I believe my sex appeal and beauty have contributed to landing roles. I frequently receive compliments on my attractiveness, especially regarding my facial expressions, presentation, dress sense, authenticity, and voice.

“For instance, in 2021, I was cast for a role because of a photo that showcased a specific look, which resonated with the casting team,” she explained.

Adebanjo stressed that her versatility is her greatest strength as an actress.

“I consider versatility to be my greatest strength. Being able to adapt to a variety of roles and genres allows me to showcase my talent and connect with diverse audiences. You can see this in my movie Farida’s Secret and my role in the YouTube series Oga Osas, among other projects.

“Versatility is essential for bringing depth and authenticity to each character and making a lasting impact. Alongside versatility, a strong work ethic, resilience, and a commitment to refining my craft are vital for success in this industry,” she stated.

Fondly referred to as Jisola by her friends, Adebanjo also emphasised on the impact of streaming platforms on Nollywood’s reach.

“Netflix and other streaming platforms have significantly expanded the distribution of Nollywood films. They provide our industry with a global audience, allowing our content to be viewed by people beyond traditional Nigerian and African markets.

“This exposure not only enhances the international visibility of Nollywood films but also fosters cross-cultural exchange and collaboration,” she added.

  • Cedi depreciates further, reaching GHS16.16 to a dollar

Cedi depreciates further, reaching GHS16.16 to a dollar

Ghana’s cedi continues to depreciate against key international currencies, including the US dollar.

After a year of sustained pressure, the local currency showed some stability in July, with inflation gradually easing. However, checks by GhanaWeb Business on September 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM, revealed that the cedi is trading at GH¢16.16 to the dollar, GH¢21.44 to the pound, and GH¢18.03 to the euro in several major forex bureaus nationwide.

Bloomberg recently reported that the cedi has weakened further, down by 0.1%, trading at GH¢15.67 per dollar. This decline could aggravate the challenges faced by the Ghanaian economy, particularly affecting the pricing strategies of businesses.

Over the past month, the cedi has fallen by nearly 1% against the dollar, following a cumulative depreciation of almost 24% in 2024, according to Bloomberg.

Additionally, Ghana’s dollar bonds maturing in 2032 saw a slight increase, rising by 0.2 cent to 52.36 cents on the dollar as of September 11, 2024, in London.

  • Ghana loses GHS4.6m to SIM swap fraud in 2023 – BoG reports

Ghana loses GHS4.6m to SIM swap fraud in 2023 – BoG reports

The Bank of Ghana has reported a surge in SIM swap fraud, which has increasingly targeted users of mobile banking services. In 2023, this scheme led to losses of about GH¢4.6 million, with 15 cases documented by the central bank.

This scam preys on people who use mobile banking, such as banking apps, WhatsApp banking, or accounts linked to their phone numbers. Criminals deceive telecom companies into transferring the victim’s phone number to a SIM card under their control, often assisted by telecom insiders.

With the phone number in hand, fraudsters can intercept calls and messages, gain access to banking apps and mobile money accounts, and bypass security protocols to carry out fraudulent transactions.

Even during cheque processing, fraudsters can manipulate mobile phone verifications.

The risk isn’t limited to individuals, as corporate entities can also fall victim, potentially losing large amounts of money.

Certified Fraud Examiner and Financial Crime & Fraud Lecturer at the National Banking College, Ransford Nana Addo Junior, warns “It is not only individual accounts. When a SIM swap happens on corporate accounts, it’s more dangerous. For instance, if the CFO of a hotel has his number swapped and a fraudulent transaction is initiated, the fraudsters will be the ones receiving the confirmation.”

He also noted that SIM swap fraud extends beyond banking:

“It goes beyond just the mobile channels and even beyond banking. For instance, if somebody wants to intercept your medication information sent through SMS or your SSNIT records, it can be intercepted through SIM swap as well.”

To safeguard yourself, exercise caution when sharing personal details and frequently check your accounts for any unusual activity. If you suspect fraudulent behavior, take immediate action by reaching out to your service provider and bank to secure your accounts and limit potential harm.

Regarding payment service providers, the Bank of Ghana has mandated adherence to section 34(3)(a) and (b) of the Payment Systems and Services Act 2019 (Act 987). This regulation stipulates that a customer’s electronic money account must be deactivated for two days following a SIM swap or replacement. The account can be reinstated once the customer provides valid identification, thereby reducing the risk of SIM swap fraud.

The report revealed a 5% increase in the total number of fraud cases reported, resulting in losses of GHS 88 million in 2023.

  • Report suggests policy rate could decrease by 1.0% to 1.5%

Report suggests policy rate could decrease by 1.0% to 1.5%

The Bank of Ghana’s Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) is projected to decrease by 1.0 to 1.5 percentage points during the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting next week.

IC Research suggests that the drop in inflation to 20.4% in August 2024, along with a previous reduction in US interest rates by the Federal Reserve, provides a compelling argument for lowering the Bank of Ghana’s policy rate.

This potential reduction is likely to bring down borrowing costs and interest rates.

IC Securities’ research division noted that the unexpected drop in headline inflation for August 2024 heightens expectations of a dovish approach at the late-September 2024 MPC meeting.

“The case for policy rate cut gets stronger, given a higher real policy rate and prospect of earlier FED rate cut. At the current inflation rate, Ghana’s ex-post real policy rate rises to 8.6%. This stands at 180bps [basis points] above the December 2023 real policy rate which triggered a 100bps cut at the January 2024 MPC meeting”.

IC Research noted that, compared to its counterparts, Ghana’s real policy rate is somewhat higher, with Kenya’s real rate standing at 8.35% and Uganda’s at 6.50%.

“Our forecast disinflation in September 2024 suggests an even higher ex-ante real policy rate of 10.0%”, it mentioned.

This, it said, strengthens the case for a cut in Ghana’s nominal policy rate with low risk of losing attractiveness on Ghana cedi-denominated assets.

The anticipated cut in the US Fed rate, which will precede Ghana’s MPC decision, will also narrow the interest rate differential on US dollar Ghana cedi and support between 100 – 150bps cut in Ghana’s Monetary Policy Rate, it concluded.

  • Rabies outbreak detected in South African among marine mammals

Rabies outbreak detected in South African among marine mammals

An outbreak of rabies in seals has been identified by scientists in South Africa, marking what they believe is the first occurrence of the virus spreading among sea mammals.

State veterinarian Dr. Lesley van Helden revealed that at least 24 Cape fur seals, found dead or euthanized across South Africa’s west and south coasts, tested positive for rabies.

Rabies, which primarily affects mammals and can be transmitted to humans, is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. The virus is typically spread through saliva, often by bites, but can also be passed when animals groom or lick each other.

Though rabies has been common in wild animals like raccoons, coyotes, foxes, jackals, and domestic dogs, its transmission among marine mammals had not been previously documented, according to van Helden and other experts.

A case of rabies in a sea mammal was recorded in the early 1980s in Norway’s Svalbard islands, where a ringed seal was likely infected by a rabid arctic fox. However, there was no evidence of the virus spreading among seals at that time.

The discovery of rabies in Cape fur seals was first made in June after a seal bit a dog on a beach in Cape Town, infecting it with rabies. This prompted authorities to conduct rabies tests on brain samples from 135 seal carcasses collected since 2021. Additional tests on 20 new samples revealed more positive cases.

Researchers are now investigating how the virus reached the seals, its spread among large seal colonies, and what measures can be taken to control the outbreak.

There are around 2 million seals migrating along the coasts of South Africa, Namibia, and Angola. Dr. van Helden suggested that the virus may have been transmitted to seals by jackals in Namibia, where the animals hunt seal pups.

Genetic analysis confirmed that the rabies virus found in the seals matched strains found in black-backed jackals in Namibia. It also indicated transmission between the seals themselves, as the virus sequences were closely related.

In South Africa, especially in areas like Cape Town where seals and humans interact closely, authorities have issued warnings. Gregg Oelofse, head of Cape Town’s coastal and environmental management, emphasized the need for caution.

For the past three years, officials have been puzzled by incidents of unusually aggressive behavior in seals, along with a rise in seal attacks on humans, some of which resulted in bites. Fortunately, no human rabies cases have been reported so far.

According to Oelofse, local authorities have begun vaccinating a limited number of seals at two popular harbors in Cape Town, where the animals are a tourist attraction.

A rabies-positive seal carcass from August 2022 suggests the virus has been present in the seal population for at least two years, Oelofse added.

Experts said there were still many unknowns.

It’s hard to predict long-term transmission dynamics, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Dave Daigle said. He noted previous instances of rabies viruses winding up in new hosts and then dying out. In 2021 in the U.S., for example, gray foxes were spreading the raccoon rabies virus variant for two years, and then transmission stopped.

The U.S. public health agency is watching the situation in South Africa, but has yet to see “clear evidence that this is going to be a long-term issue,” Daigle said.

Another uncertainty is whether the vaccine will be effective in seals, as it has never been tested on them. However, experts are optimistic that it could work.

A logistical challenge also exists, according to van Helden: vaccinating a large number of seals, which primarily live in the ocean and migrate across more than 3,500 kilometers (2,170 miles) of coastline. While land animals can be immunized through bait that delivers oral vaccines, seals typically only consume live fish, van Helden pointed out.

South African authorities are working closely with international experts on this issue.

Govt seeks to raise GHS5.881bn through treasury bills this week

The government aims to raise GH¢5.881 billion in its treasury bills auction scheduled for September 20, 2024.

In the previous week, the government surpassed its treasury bill target for the first time in ten weeks, after experiencing nine consecutive weeks of undersubscriptions.

A total of GH¢5.529 billion was raised in the latest auction, exceeding the GH¢5.400 billion goal by GH¢129.67 million.

For the auction held on September 13, 2024, and settled on September 16, 2024, GH¢4.698 billion was allotted for the 91-day bill.

Meanwhile, the government accepted GH¢594.37 million for the 182-day bill and GH¢245.74 million for the 365-day bill.

In total, GH¢4.849.15 billion worth of treasury bills were sold last week.

Interest rates stood at 24.91% for the 91-day bill, 26.80% for the 182-day bill, and 27.07% for the 365-day bill.

Bank of Ghana’s data shows that all bids submitted during this week’s auction were accepted.

  • Blood shed in Burkina Faso as Islamist attacks on churches increase

Blood shed in Burkina Faso as Islamist attacks on churches increase

A report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) indicates that Islamist insurgents in Burkina Faso have intensified their attacks on civilians, engaging in door-to-door killings, throat-slitting, and targeting Christian worshippers.

The report cited statistics revealing that over 6,000 deaths have occurred in the West African nation in the first eight months of this year, including approximately 1,000 civilians killed by Islamist militants.

Since 2016, Burkina Faso has been grappling with jihadist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS).

After Captain Ibrahim Traoré took power in a coup two years ago, he promised to address the severe security challenges within “two to three months.” Nevertheless, the violence has only increased since then.

Released on Wednesday, HRW’s report documents gruesome atrocities committed by jihadists.

Attacks are often carried out in retaliation against communities who have refused to join the ranks of the jihadists or have been accused of collaborating with government troops, HRW said.

A February attack on church worshippers in the north-eastern village of Essakane left 12 dead.

“I saw a huge pool of blood and traces of blood all over the church, as well as bullet marks on the benches,” one survivor, who lost his brother at the hands of the assailants, was quoted as saying.

The Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), one of the key militant groups in Burkina Faso, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Al-Qaeda linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) fighters were also highlighted several times in the report.

“The jihadists opened fire in the village indiscriminately,” said a 35-year-old farmer who witnessed an attack by alleged JNIM fighters in the town of Sindo, Hauts-Bassins region, on June 11.

“We found bodies in the village, on the outskirts and in the bush.… Some were shot, others had their throats slit,” another resident said.

Witnesses also said that in June, militants stormed the town of Mansila after killing dozens of soldiers at an army base nearby. The locals told HRW that jihadists went door-to-door, ordering people out of their homes and killing men they accused of collaborating with the army.

HRW said that Burkina Faso’s army and civilian groups affiliated to it have also committed atrocities during operations against the insurgents.

A previous report from the watchdog accused the Burkinabè military of massacring at least 223 civilians in February.

Large swathes of the West African country are run by the jihadist groups, leaving the government in control of just roughly half of nation.

Quoted in HRW’s report, the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) has recorded more than 6,000 deaths in the first eight months of the year, including around 1,000 civilians killed by jihadist groups.

These figures do not include the 100 to 400 civilians killed in an attack on August 24 in the northern town of Barsalogho, HRW said.

JNIM claimed responsibility for the massacre.

Experts told the BBC that the scale of the Barsalogho attack points to a larger problem in the Burkina Faso’s security architecture.

“The country is yet to come up with a security strategy that can defend not just the people, but also its territorial integrity,” said David Otto, an international defence and security analyst.

Ryan Cummings, who has co-written a book on the Islamic State in Africa, said: “We often hear reports by some commanders in the Burkina Faso military that they have less ammunition than what the insurgents have access to, and that’s a worrying development.”

Burkina Faso has pivoted towards Russia for military aid after breaking its decades-old alliance with former colonial power France.

It has also formed an alliance with two other pro-Russian juntas in the region – Mali and Niger – to fight the jihadists.

Mr Otto says the three juntas have still been unable to consolidate their power, making it difficult for them to focus on the jihadist threat.

Mr Cummings said that successive governments had not done enough to professionalise Burkina Faso’s armed forces, leaving troops without adequate training and weapons.

The insurgents operate across the region, and JNIM claimed responsibility for an assault on Mali’s capital, Bamako, on Tuesday.

A military training school and the country’s main airport were attacked.

The army acknowledged suffering losses but did not specify the number of casualties.

  • Ousted Gabon president quits politics, demands wife’s release

Ousted Gabon president quits politics, demands wife’s release

Ousted President of Gabon, Ali Bongo, has declared his intention to exit politics a year after being removed from power in a military coup.

“I wish to reaffirm my withdrawal from political life and the definitive renunciation of any national ambition,” Mr Bongo said in a letter addressed to the Gabonese people.

In a recent statement, the ousted leader called for the release of his wife and son, who are currently detained on corruption charges.

Questions remain about whether this appeal comes after negotiations with the military authorities or if he hopes that resigning from politics might facilitate his family’s release.

Health concerns had been significant for Mr. Bongo, especially since he suffered a stroke in 2018, with many worried leading up to the 2023 presidential election.

The military seized power in August, shortly after he was declared the winner of a disputed election opposed by rival factions.

Having ruled since 2009, he succeeded his father, who held power for more than 40 years. The Bongo family has long-standing connections to France, the former colonial power in Gabon.

Celebrations erupted at home following the coup led by Gen Brice Oligui Ngeuma, although regional and continental organizations, along with France, condemned the action.

One week after the military takeover, the ousted president was freed from house arrest, yet he has stayed in Libreville, the capital.

Gen Nguema has adopted a conciliatory stance, stating that the deposed president is free to travel abroad.

However, in his letter, Mr. Bongo noted that his movements are still restricted and monitored daily.

“My visits depend on the authorisation of the military. Isolated from the outside world without communications, without news of my family,” he added.

He urged for an end to the “violence and torture” inflicted on his French-born wife, Sylvia, and their son, Noureddin, insisting they should both be released.

They are currently in pre-trial detention, facing allegations of embezzling public funds.

Mrs. Bongo is charged with money laundering, forgery, and document falsification, though she has not publicly addressed these accusations.

Her attorney, Francois Zimeray, criticized her detention last year, describing it as arbitrary and illegal.

Mr. Bongo stated that both his wife and son are “helpless scapegoats,” reiterating that his decision to step away from active politics extends to them.

The military authorities have not responded to Mr. Bongo’s remarks but have previously denied allegations of torturing his family members.

Throughout their decades in power, Mr. Bongo and his family have faced accusations of personal enrichment at the nation’s expense, which they have denied.

Despite Gabon’s oil wealth, one-third of its 2.4 million residents live below the poverty line, according to United Nations estimates.

While acknowledging the shortcomings of his presidency, Mr Bongo hoped the junta would end what he termed “national suffering” and pleaded for national reconciliation.

“I understand that despite the achievements made under my mandates, too many Gabonese people are still suffering and this remains my greatest regret.”

Gen Nguema has promised that there will be free and fair elections leading to the establishment of a new civilian government.

However, he has not publicly commented on whether or not he will run for the country’s top job in polls that are planned for next year.

“I call on my country, its leaders and my fellow citizens to renounce vengeance and to write its next history with harmony and humanity,” Mr Bongo added, pledging never to pose any threat or trouble during the country’s transition.

  • GEXIM offers SMEs concessionary interest rates of 9% to tackle financial challenges

GEXIM offers SMEs concessionary interest rates of 9% to tackle financial challenges

The Ghana Export-Import (GEXIM) Bank has expressed its dedication to overcoming the long-standing financial challenges faced by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana by offering concessional loans and grants.

“We will provide SMEs, not only with capital, but at concessionary interest rates of nine percent per annum to address the access to finance challenge that SMEs have had all this while,” Bright Evans Darko, Head of SME Department, GEXIM, said.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, he mentioned this after the final regional sensitization exercise for the Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Growth and Opportunity (SME GO) initiative in Accra on Wednesday, September 18.

Climaxing the 16 regional engagements with SMEs and other stakeholders, the Greater Accra sensitization officially launched the SME GO initiative for implementation.

Interested businesses were encouraged by Mr. Darko to promptly register for the program by contacting the Ghana EXIM Bank, Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), and the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) for assistance.

For those SMEs applying for financial support under the SME GO initiative, he advised waiting for a 30-day response period from the participating financial institutions.

Additionally, he indicated that the Bank would provide technical and production support to small businesses through its future modern food processing plant, aimed at enhancing value addition and exporting Ghanaian products.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the GEXIM CEO, Ms. Rosemary Beryl Archer, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), stated that the Bank would offer loans, technical assistance, and advisory services to the SMEs involved.

This approach, Ms. Beryl Archer noted, aligns with the Bank’s commitment to supporting the government’s goal of transforming the Ghanaian economy into an export-led one.

“In the last seven years, the Bank has made a deliberate attempt to provide various forms of support to Ghanaian SMEs with the recent one being a capacity building programme for over hundred Ghanaian SMEs by a team of experts from Thailand,” she said.

Mr Michael Okyere Baafi, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Trade and Industry, urged the participating financial institutions not to renege on their pledge to the initiative, saying, “the sensitisation is over… the SMEs want to see you in action.”

He pledged the Ministry’s commitment to working collaboratively with the participating financial institutions to ensure that the SMEs would have access to affordable finance to take their businesses to the next level.

Launched by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on July 16, 2024, the SME GO initiative is to assist Ghanaian SMEs to scale up and build their capacities as sustainable businesses able to compete favourably in the international marketplace.

Under the initiative, SMEs would be given the needed funding, requisite technology and innovation, knowledge enhancement and other relevant resources and tools to aid their growth into international giants.

  • Government dedicated to expand SMEs – Minister of State

Government dedicated to expand SMEs – Minister of State

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through the SME Growth and Opportunity (SME-GO) program.

This initiative aims to enhance the sector by offering essential financial and technical assistance.

During a stakeholder sensitization event in Accra, Minister of State Abena Osei-Asare highlighted the government’s dedication to supporting the SME sector, often seen as the backbone of the Ghanaian economy.

This event marked the end of the national sensitization tour, bringing together important government officials, development partners, and SME representatives.

Ms. Osei-Asare stated that the SME-GO program is designed to tackle various challenges faced by SMEs, such as limited access to financing, insufficient technical support, and a lack of capacity-building opportunities. In recent weeks, the program has reached out to 3,250 SMEs across all 16 regions, educating them on how to access available resources and support.

“We have fulfilled our promise to move into ‘execution mode’ by engaging SMEs across the country. Today, we conclude this phase in Greater Accra with the assurance that we will continue to listen, engage and provide the needed support to ensure this vital sector’s growth,” Ms Osei-Asare noted.

She elaborated that the SME-GO program, in collaboration with Development Bank Ghana, Ghana EXIM Bank, Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), and other vital organizations, has been carefully crafted to enable SMEs to foster innovation, generate employment, and aid in the country’s economic transformation.

“We are speeding up and scaling up support for businesses,” Ms. Osei-Asare said.

She also emphasized the vital role of SMEs in supporting Ghana’s economic recovery, asserting that the sector’s growth is essential for sustaining the country’s improving fiscal health.

In recent months, Ghana’s economic indicators have shown encouraging trends. The minister highlighted that growth for the second quarter of 2024 reached an average of 6.9 percent, primarily fueled by the industrial sector. Additionally, inflation, which had surged to 54 percent in December 2022, has dropped to 20.4 percent by August 2024, comfortably within the government’s target for the year.

“Our fiscal position has significantly improved and we are broadly on course to record a positive primary balance at 0.5 percent of GDP in 2024. The surest way to sustain this macroeconomic stability is to bolster SMEs, which are the lifeblood of our local economies,” she added.

Government’s renewed focus on SMEs is not only driven by the need for economic stability but also recognition that the sector holds enormous potential for job creation and innovation.

“The decentralised engagements across all regions have confirmed the prudence of our renewed focus on SMEs. These businesses are the backbone of regional and local economies; and with targetted interventions their potential to anchor economic recovery and transformation is undeniable,” the minister explained.

In addition to government assistance, the SME-GO program has garnered substantial international support. The initiative has received GH¢700 million from the government to aid the Ghana Enterprises Agency and Ghana EXIM Bank.

Moreover, Development Bank Ghana is investing around GH¢1.2 billion, while the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank has committed US$400 million. The African Development Bank has also contributed US$40 million.

Osei-Asare emphasized that the partnership between public and private entities is crucial for establishing a more robust ecosystem for SMEs.

  • Ghana benefits from 75% of mining revenue – Sulemanu Koney dismisses offshore hoarding accusations

Ghana benefits from 75% of mining revenue – Sulemanu Koney dismisses offshore hoarding accusations

Sulemanu Koney, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has refuted the idea that Ghana’s mining companies stash their profits overseas, stating that 70% to 75% of mineral revenue is repatriated to the country each year.

During an appearance on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, September 19, he highlighted the significant financial impact that the mining sector has on Ghana’s economy.

“A lot of money comes back into the country,” Mr Koney stated.

“It’s not true that a lot of firms are holding their money outside. On average, between 70% and 75% of mining revenue comes back into Ghana every year. That is in foreign exchange, and it is used to run the operations of the mines here.”

He added that the funds are critical for maintaining operations and paying for labour, energy, and other consumables.

“Mining is an energy-intensive industry. You need power, diesel, and labour to run these operations. How do you pay for them if the money is sitting offshore? Naturally, the money has to come back,” Mr Koney stated.

The local procurement policy within the mining sector guarantees that a substantial amount of mining supplies is sourced from local vendors, enhancing contributions to the Ghanaian economy.

Mr. Koney noted that certain vendors are paid in foreign currency, but this requires prior approval from the Bank of Ghana.

In response to skeptics who doubt the sector’s transparency, Koney contended that these misunderstandings arise from a lack of information.

“A lot of people have blocked their minds to what the Ghana Chamber of Mines says, which is why we work with civil society organisations to provide credible information,” he explained.

Mr. Koney’s comments highlight the mining sector’s vital contribution to generating foreign exchange for the country and bolstering local businesses.

“If this money didn’t come back, imagine what would happen to our cedi. The mining industry’s revenue inflows are keeping things stable,” he affirmed.

Why are you afraid of forensic examination if you have nothing to hide? – Nyaho Tamakloe questions EC

Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Tamakloe has condemned the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision not to perform a forensic audit of the voter register before the 2024 elections.

During an interview with Joy News on September 19, he likened the EC’s position to an effort to hide evidence.

“Why should they fear a forensic examination if there’s nothing to hide?” he questioned. “This isn’t about partisan politics; we’re facing a serious issue that transcends NPP, NDC, or any other party. We need to focus on the state of our nation, which is already in distress.”

He stressed that this issue transcends party politics and pertains to the significant challenges facing Ghana’s democracy, urging citizens to take a national perspective instead of a partisan one.

“Things are getting worse and I am getting worried. I know there are elders my age and they have gone silent for reasons I don’t know. I hope with the sort of alarm bells from the trade union organisations and other sectors, that Ghanaian will sit up now,” he said.

His comments came in response to allegations from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which asserted that the EC denied their request for a forensic audit after raising concerns about irregularities, including the unlawful transfer of votes.

The NDC has accused the EC of enabling illegal vote transfers and is calling for a forensic audit to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

8 additional data providers, users of credit reporting system gain approval from BoG

In 2023, the Bank of Ghana reported receiving 13 applications from non-banking companies seeking recognition as data providers and authorized users of the Credit Reporting System (CRS).

Of these applications, eight were approved by the central bank. According to the BoG’s annual report on credit activities, these approvals enable the respective companies to contribute data to credit bureaus and access credit information from them.

As of December 2023, a total of 33 companies had been officially designated as part of the system. The report explained that the approvals were granted based on the companies’ involvement in trade credit or the processing of data essential to enhancing the credit reporting framework.

The approved institutions included retailers, fintech companies, and credit unions.

The Bank of Ghana also initiated discussions with the Microfinance and Small-Scale Loans Centre (MASLOC) and the Ghana Enterprise Agency to develop procedures for their participation in the CRS.

Additionally, the central bank began talks with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to further expand the system by incorporating relevant data for a more comprehensive CRS.

“The engagement, when completed, will allow ECG to submit credit information to credit bureaux to improve the credit reports of consumers and businesses.”

Lecturer to receive GHS 1.9m compensation from Bolt over identity theft

The Adentan Circuit Court has ordered Bolt Ghana Limited to pay GH¢1.9 million to Justice Noah Adade, a lecturer and CEO of a software solutions firm, for failing to prevent the misuse of his identity by one of its drivers.

Justice Noah Adade, an Information Technology Consultant, had filed a GH¢2 million lawsuit against Bolt, claiming negligence on their part.

He alleged that the company violated the Data Protection Act by utilizing his personal information for a driver without proper verification.

Adade contended that Bolt did not confirm the ownership of the vehicle with registration number GR 2052-22 before allowing its registration.

In his lawsuit, he sought a court order for Bolt to remove his personal data from their database and demanded compensation for the unauthorized use of his information.

He recounted an incident in August 2022 when he booked a ride through the Bolt app, only to be shocked to find his name and image associated with the driver.

When he confronted the actual driver, whom he recognized, the driver apologized.

Adade emphasized that Bolt Ghana Limited had a responsibility to conduct thorough and diligent operations, which it failed to uphold.

Ultimately, the court ruled in favor of Adade, mandating that Bolt compensate him for the damages incurred.

My assistant in Ghana under threat over my Eurobond tweet – Michael Blackson

In a recent turn of events, Ghanaian-American comedian, Michael Blackson has revealed that his assistant’s life is now under threat, following his public outcry on social media over financial difficulties he attributes to government actions.

According to Blackson, his assistant, who resides in Ghana, has been receiving alarming threats in reaction to his earlier tweets.

“My assistant in Ghana called me yesterday and said he was getting threats because of my tweets,” parts of his tweets read.

Puzzled by the situation, Michael Blackson, questioned what wrongdoing he had committed, asking whether he didn’t have the right to voice his concerns after being robbed in the country.

“Let me get this straight, I decided to come home because of the love and passion I have for home but I get robbed and since I don’t have the power to fight back, I decided to tell the world my problem and now they threaten my people. Smh,” he added.

The Ghanaian-American actor also touched on his investments, sharing that after researching Ghana’s bond history, he initially believed they would be a secure option, but the outcome proved to be far worse than expected.

“I did my research on Ghana and bonds, in their history of existence there has never been an issue. So, I said to myself this interest can keep my school going. $10k a month will be good to pay teachers, cooks, cleaners, security, lunch, electricity, water, books, etc.

“I figured $1m would get me $10k, I got one payment and it stopped. It’s been 2 years, mind you they had my $1m and I had to find $10k each month. Now you know why I’m pissed,” he stated.

Michael Blackson criticised the Ghanaian government for using funds from Eurobond investments to pay off debts, leaving investors like him in a tough situation.

He explained that he invested in the Eurobonds, believing they would sustain the free school he built.

“Who’s the Minister of Finance in Ghana? I have issues with this guy. People from the diaspora chose to invest in our continent, and now our money is being used to pay off debt. We’re left with disappointing options: a 37% cut for 5% interest over 11 years, or no cut with just 1.9% interest over 15 years. I’m very disappointed in my people for this,” he expressed.

His remarks have sparked a flurry of responses on social media, particularly from celebrities and media figures.

Manhyia warns political parties to desist from campaigns near palace and historic sites

The office of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has issued a stern warning to political parties and their supporters, urging them to refrain from bringing their campaigns and associated materials near the Manhyia Palace and significant Asante heritage sites.

In an interview on Opemsuo Radio, a palace spokesperson cautioned that serious repercussions would befall any individual or political group that ignores this directive.

“Let’s all listen to this announcement carefully because if you defy this caution, you will be invited. Yesterday, leaders met and everyone was tasked to send out the message to all the political parties and, by extension, the entire nation. You have the right to splash your posters wherever, but places like the Airport Roundabout are off limits… it is disrespectful to go and hang party colours around the effigy of Okomfo Anokye or our Queen Mother; it is disrespectful,” he said.

As Ghana approaches the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, political parties are intensifying efforts to boost their presence nationwide by displaying posters, billboards, and flags.

However, this surge in campaign materials has resulted in the defacement of numerous public and private properties, sparking widespread concerns.

Recently, a photo surfaced on social media, showing the statue of Okomfo Anokye adorned in the colors of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

Vote for Bawumia to secure me a top govt job – K.T. Hammond ‘begs’ constituents

Adansi Asokwa Member of Parliament (MP) K.T. Hammond, has urged his constituents to support and vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, in the upcoming December 7 elections.

The Trade and Industry Minister, who is campaigning for his 7th term in Parliament, expressed confidence that a victory for Bawumia would secure him a prominent role in government come 2025.

While addressing his constituents, Hammond made a particular appeal to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), asking them to shift their loyalty and vote for the NPP to ensure his continued success and the party’s triumph in the 2024 elections.

“The NDC members here, stop looking at me as if I’m a wizard. Change your mind, vote for the NPP, and especially for Dr. Bawumia, so I can secure a top appointment. I want all of you to become members of the NPP by force,” he added, emphasizing his desire for a strong turnout.

“Change your mind and vote for the NPP so that we win the elections. When he becomes president, he will continue the digitisation agenda, he will bring it your doorstep,” he stated.

K.T. Hammond has been the Adansi Asokwa MP for six consecutive terms, spanning the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th parliaments.

  • GSA clamps down on company producing low standard mattresses in Afienya

GSA clamps down on company producing low standard mattresses in Afienya

A Chinese firm ZXZ Company Limited, producing the popular Moonda mattresses in Afienya, has been forced to close down.

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) discovered that the company had been using uncertified materials, a dangerous gamble that put countless Ghanaians at risk. Acting on a tip, the GSA launched a market investigation, only to find that ZXZ was manufacturing mattresses with polystyrene, a material meant for packaging, rather than the approved polyurethane.

But the surprises didn’t end there. When a team of GSA officials, police, and media personnel visited the factory, they uncovered another layer of the company’s illicit operations: ZXZ had been assembling electronics – televisions, refrigerators, and sound bars – under the Asano brand, all without GSA certification. The company was caught red-handed.

A Chinese woman who identified herself as the factory supervisor initially defended the use of these materials, claiming they were allowed in China. However, after further questioning, she admitted that the factory did not have the necessary licenses to operate in Ghana and agreed to close the factory until the legal requirements were met.

George Anti, head of the GSA’s Special Products Unit, expressed his dismay at the extent of the unlicensed activities. He reaffirmed the GSA’s commitment to ensuring only safe, certified products make it to the market. He also warned that sleeping on mattresses made from polystyrene could pose long-term health risks. Before ZXZ can reopen, the GSA will ensure all substandard products are destroyed, and the factory complies with regulations.

“Ghana is open for business, but it must be done within the right regulatory framework. It makes no sense to invest heavily in establishing a facility and then operate illegally.

The company has committed multiple offences under our act, each with its own penalty units; so we will tally all the penalties and ensure they are paid before allowing the factory to reopen,” he said.

The GSA team, on a random inspection, also discovered a Chinese-owned plastic recycling plant operating without GSA licence at the same Bright International Industrial Zone.

The GSA has therefore sent a word of caution to all foreign-owned manufacturing companies operating without registering with the Authority to do so immediately to avoid any punitive measures.

    AGI concerns about illegal operations

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has repeatedly expressed concerns over the years about foreign-owned businesses flooding the market with substandard goods, which are sold at cheaper rates than standard products from local competitors.

This recent case serves as a major confirmation of those concerns.
This company’s substandard mattresses obviously sell for less than the quality products of Ashform and Latex Foam among others, impacting their businesses negatively.

Furthermore, until Ghana Revenue Authority performs a tax audit on this company it’s easy to conclude that it isn’t paying the right taxes – hence short-changing the state.

To create a fair playing ground for both local manufacturers and foreign investors, it’s important that Chinese firms operate according to national regulations, pay the right taxes and produce quality goods and services.

  • Cedi poised for recovery as high interest rates, gold exports provide support

Cedi poised for recovery as high interest rates, gold exports provide support

Ghana’s cedi appears poised for a recovery after reaching a new low against the dollar, driven by elevated interest rates, an improved government financial outlook, and increased gold revenues.

“We believe the upside to the dollar/cedi is limited now, as risks concerning Ghana’s outlook should already be in the price, while real rates are likely to remain wide and positive,” SG strategist Gergely Urmossy wrote in a note to clients.

The cedi slipped by 0.1%, hitting a new low of 15.69 per dollar at 1:27 p.m. in Accra. This brings its year-to-date decline to 24%, fueled by concerns that the government may overspend ahead of the December presidential elections, a pattern seen in the past.

However, in July, the government projected a 2024 budget deficit of 4.2% of GDP, improving from a previous forecast of 4.8%.

This aligns with the growth projections of the International Monetary Fund, which provided Ghana with a $3 billion bailout to assist during a prolonged debt restructuring after its 2022 default.

Real interest rates, adjusted for inflation, have remained strong due to easing price pressures. The central bank has maintained its benchmark rate at 29% since January, while inflation has fallen to 20.4% from 23.5%.

Additionally, the cedi is benefiting from robust gold exports, helping to counter the disappointing cocoa revenue caused by unfavorable weather conditions.

“We are seeing a growing offset from Ghana’s robust gold exports,” Nikolaus Geromont, a strategist at Absa Group Ltd., said in a note to clients. “Given that we expect the current account surplus to rise, the pace of the cedi’s weakness could ease from here.”

Passport forms worth GHS100-GHS150 to be invalid after Oct. 18 – Foreign Ministry to applicants

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has informed passport applicants who paid for their applications before April 1, 2024, that they must complete their biometric data capture by October 18, 2024.

This directive is aimed at applicants who have not yet visited their designated Passport Application Centres (PACs) to finalize the process.

According to a press release issued on September 18, 2024, the Ministry stressed that failure to complete the biometric capture by the stated deadline will result in the invalidation of their applications.

“Passport applications submitted under the previous fees of GHS100 and GHS150 will be invalid after this deadline. This follows an upward revision in passport fees, in line with the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Regulations, 2023 (L.I 2481), which came into effect on April 1, 2024,” the release stated.

The Ministry urged applicants to adhere to the timeline to avoid delays or complications in receiving their passports, adding, “Applicants are advised to act swiftly to avoid their applications being invalidated.”

This reminder forms part of the Ministry’s efforts to streamline the passport application process and ensure timely completion of all necessary steps for processing.

Joe Mettle reflects on friendship and grief following KODA’s passing

Gospel singer Joe Mettle has shared his deep sorrow over the passing of his colleague, Kofi Owusu Dua Anto, known affectionately as KODA.

According to Mr. Mettle, the experience has been particularly challenging due to the close friendship they maintained until KODA’s passing.

During an interview on Joy Prime’s Changes show, the singer told Roselyn Felli, who inquired about his feelings upon learning of his colleague’s death, that “it was a difficult moment and still is.”

He added that, although the musician is gone forever, reflecting on shared moments makes him feel as if KODA is still with them.

“Sometimes we’re still living in denial about the fact that maybe he’s still around. Once in a while, you have the awareness that he really is gone,” he reiterated.

Mr. Mettle believes that the loss of the ‘Hossana’ hitmaker is part of God’s plan, trusting that KODA is resting peacefully in God’s embrace.

Meanwhile, the final funeral rites for the late singer are set for Friday, September 20, at KICC Dominion Center, off Spintex Road.

All fans and supporters are invited to join the family as they say goodbye to their beloved.

  • Not a single gospel artist reached out to me after my injury – Sonnie Badu

Not a single gospel artist reached out to me after my injury – Sonnie Badu

UK-based Ghanaian gospel artist Sonnie Badu has opened up about feeling overlooked by his peers in the gospel community after sustaining an injury in 2023.

He revealed that during his time on the sickbed, not a single gospel musician reached out to him, leaving him to navigate one of the most challenging periods of his life alone.

In an interview on Joy Prime’s late afternoon show, Changes, the singer expressed his surprise at this lack of support, especially given their shared connection within the gospel community.

“Not even a single one checked up on me. Personally, if I heard that somebody had gone through something or seen it, I would have been calling. I don’t care whether I’m cool with you or not. But not even one person did,” he told Roselyn Felli on Wednesday.

When he recognized that no one was concerned about his well-being, he found the strength within himself to push through and complete the project he had started.

“When I realised that not even a single gospel artist colleague or pastor would check up on me, that’s when I said even if I died, nobody cares; I have to rise up quickly,” he continued.

Nevertheless, he noted that a few pastors, including Nigerian Pastor Jerry Eze, Prophet Agyemang Prempeh of Ultimate Charismatic Centre, Apostle Amoako Atta of the Lord’s Parliament Chapel International, and Pastor Kingsley, showed him love by reaching out to him on some social media platforms.

Despite this, the composer of “My Confidence” was motivated by the indifference he faced to recover quickly and proceed with his December Rhythms of Africa concert.

On the day of the concert, his injury worsened, but he pushed through the pain and delivered an outstanding performance.

The musician expressed his gratitude to God for His healing grace and mercy, explaining that the initial fall impacted his head before shifting to his leg, which could have led to a fatal outcome.

After the incident, some Ghanaian social media users mocked him, claiming the injury was staged to gain attention for his concert. However, Mr. Badu stated he didn’t hold it against them, acknowledging that such behavior is typical among Ghanaians.

“Ghana like seeing is believing, and I’m going to show them what I went through. It’s ugly,” he said.

  • I left Eats Avenue because of rumours that I have slept with Medikal’s manager – Efia Odo

I left Eats Avenue because of rumours that I have slept with Medikal’s manager – Efia Odo

Efia Odo has responded to various rumors surrounding her departure from the restaurant.

The socialite noted that some individuals alleged the restaurant owner discovered her in a compromising situation with Medikal’s manager, which supposedly escalated the problems that led to her leaving.

While she acknowledged that Kofi Jam, Medikal’s manager, was indeed present at the restaurant, she refuted any claims of inappropriate behavior between them.

“One instance Medikal’s manager came there. They said my co-owner saw me chopping the guy at the restaurant. Like how?” she quizzed.

Efia further explained that her friendly demeanour is often misinterpreted as sex appeal.

“I am someone who welcomes everyone. I am very hospitable and sociable. I will flirt with my customers because the more I flirt, the more money comes. I do it to both males and females just to let them know that I am not a welcoming person,” she stated.

Efia Odo also remembered facing accusations of having an affair with the restaurant owner due to her frequent stays in his nearby apartment.

While she confirmed that she did stay there, she stressed that their relationship was purely platonic, with no romantic involvement.

She described the restaurant owner as an uncle, even referring to him in that manner.

Regarding the impact of these rumours on her, she added, “A lot of this gossip affected me; I am human.”

Akufo-Addo, Mahama have no authority to ‘address’ Asantehene – Kwaku Manu

Renowned Ghanaian actor Kwaku Manu has asserted that no one in Ghana has the authority to address the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in a specific manner.

He emphasized that neither the current nor former Presidents, nor the Parliament of Ghana, possess this power, given the significant role the King plays in the nation.

Expanding on the Asantehene’s supremacy, Kwaku Manu noted that even the Supreme Court lacks the jurisdiction to intervene in matters concerning the Asantehene.

“Our president, Akufo-Addo, and former President John Mahama cannot address the Asantehene, they do not even have the power to address any issue concerning the Asantehene. Even Parliament can’t address Otumfuo. I hardly do tribalism but I want to explain for some people to understand.” He said.

The Kumawood actor’s remarks came in response to comments made by Accra-based broadcast journalist Afia Pokua, who attempted to belittle the King amid ongoing disputes involving his subjects and other tribes, including the Bonos.

During a segment on Onua FM’s ‘Bribi Gye Gye wo,’ hosted by Mona Gucci, Pokua voiced her frustration over what she perceives as the Ashantis asserting dominance over other tribes and the Asantehene’s inaction on the matter.

Her comments have sparked significant outrage among the Ashanti community, with many criticizing the journalist for what they consider derogatory remarks.

While sharing some history of the Asante Kingdom, Kweku Manu said; “The white never ruled the Asantes. Asantes fought for their independence before Dr Kwame Nkrumah fought for independence for the whole country. We didn’t have a country called Ghana, we only had Gold Coast but during those times, there was a whole kingdom called “Asanteman”

I enjoyed flirting with customers at “Eats Avenue” because it made them pay more – Efia Odo

Ghanaian socialite Efia Odo has revealed that she enjoyed flirting with customers while working at Eats Avenue, as it often encouraged them to spend more.

During her appearance on Bants and Rants, Efia opened up about her time at the restaurant and how her interactions with customers contributed to the eatery’s success.

“I’m a sociable person, and I enjoyed flirting with customers. It usually led to them spending more, which was great for business.”

Efia also addressed her controversial tweet in which she informed the public that she is no longer affiliated with Eats Avenue, advising that all who go there should “eat at your own risk.”

She explained that her comment stemmed from anger over negative feedback about her.

“‘Eat at your own risk’ meant that now I’m not there. Obviously, I acted out of emotion, and it’s something I shouldn’t have tweeted. People who go there because of me will now wonder, ‘Efia Odo says to eat at your own risk—what does she mean?’ Obviously, that was a mistake on my part.”

“Looking back now, it was very childish of me. I was simply trying to say, ‘I’m not there anymore, so if anything happens, it’s your own risk.’ If you get the wrong order, don’t come to me. Normally, people reach out to me in my DMs because I handle a lot of the PR, so it was more of a way to say, ‘If you have problems, don’t come to me.’”

Efia reiterated, “Looking back, it was indeed childish of me. I was just trying to clarify that I’m not responsible anymore, but it came off differently.”

President of National House of Chiefs rejects mining ban, urges stricter regulation of galamsey

President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has rejected proposals for a complete halt to all mining activities in Ghana, instead pushing for stricter regulations to promote responsible mining.

He emphasized the significant role mining plays in the nation’s economy, cautioning that shutting down the industry entirely would bring adverse effects.

His remarks come as calls grow for the government to tackle the issue of illegal mining, known as galamsey, which has led to widespread environmental and water resource damage.

Several organizations, such as the Ghana Medical Association and Organised Labour, have urged the government to either ban small-scale mining or declare a state of emergency to address the galamsey crisis.

While acknowledging the harm caused by illegal mining, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II suggested that the focus should be on encouraging responsible mining practices.

He pointed out the importance of the Minerals Commission in overseeing mining operations and argued that enforcing proper mining procedures is a better solution than an outright ban.

The chief also highlighted the significant employment mining provides, especially for young people, warning that a total ban could result in widespread unemployment.

He stressed the importance of balancing environmental protection with the economic benefits derived from mining.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II called on the government and stakeholders to enhance regulations and ramp up efforts against illegal mining, while ensuring that responsible mining continues to contribute to national development.

“You all know I am against Galamsey, and I will continue to fight against it, but that should not prevent Ghanaians from engaging in mining activities. Gold is for us, but the right methods should be used to mine it. That is why there is an institution like the Minerals Commission that is responsible for regulating these activities.”

“We are pleading to those calling for the declaration of a state of emergency, and those calling for a ban on mining should know the benefit the nation gets from mining. If we stop mining, most of our youth will be pushed out of jobs.”

“We should adopt the right measures to regulate illegal mining so they can all do responsible mining. As for the mining, we will do it, but we will do it responsibly.”

Some family members conspired with my enemies to kill me – Ajagurajah

Prophet Kwabena Boakye Asiamah, the founder of the Ajagurajah Movement, better known as Prophet Ajagurajah, has revealed that he has kept a low profile because some assassins were hired to kill him for undisclosed reasons.

In an interview with Kingdom FM, reported by MyNewsGh.com, the self-proclaimed bishop claimed there is a conspiracy involving certain family members and adversaries who want him dead.

He noted that he has been followed whenever he appears for interviews.

“Someone paid assassins to kill me. It’s a conspiracy between some family members and my enemies,” he disclosed.

He explained that he feels watched during his media appearances, prompting him to be more cautious. “I used to share my interview flyers a week in advance, but now I only post them three hours before the show to prevent them from planning an attack. Many people dislike me. They think I’ve sought protection, and yes, I have. The issue is that the protection I have is so strong that they don’t understand,” he asserted.

Ajagurajah further emphasized that his unpopularity stems from the affection he shows to people outside his family. He stated that he would rather give his money and possessions to those who are not related to him than share with his family members.

“They expect me to spend my money on them, but I won’t. I prefer to use it on outsiders,” he declared.

Wontumi calls for arrest of retired Police Commander over allegations of inciting unrest

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has called for the arrest of retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathan Kofi Boakye under citizen’s arrest.

Wontumi claims that COP Kofi Boakye, who is allegedly involved in the security arrangements for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is training opposition members to incite unrest in the Ashanti Region during the upcoming December elections.4o

“… Kofi Boakye, if there is any disturbance here, we will hold you responsible. This place belongs to us. You were lobbying for the IGP position in an NPP government, and today you are the one training NDC mercenaries to perpetrate violence. I am going to deal with you. I am stronger than you, I will deal with you, Kofi Boakye.

“If you meet Kofi Boakye anywhere, arrest him and bring him to me on citizen’s arrest. I will hand him over to the police… We have a lot of things we can do, but we won’t do them. However, if he goes little, we will go bigger. This is a strong warning,” he stated during an interview on his Wontumi radio on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

He made the remarks in response to a nationwide protest organized by the NDC on Tuesday, calling for the Electoral Commission to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Although the NDC gathered significant numbers during their demonstrations across the sixteen regional capitals, Wontumi dismissed the event’s influence, stating that it failed to capture the attention of Ghanaians.

We’ve received no such communication – Blue Gold Bogoso Prestea on mining license termination

Blue Gold Bogoso Prestea Limited has dismissed claims that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources terminated the mining leases of FGR Bogoso Prestea Limited as of September 3, 2024.

According to a statement from the new operators of the Bogoso and Prestea mines, they have not received any official notice regarding the alleged termination.

The statement also affirmed that the mining leases remain valid and are fully owned by the company.

The company reassured its employees to “maintain their composure and continue their work, as the termination process of a mining lease must adhere to established legal procedures to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders and ensure that due process is observed.”

This clarification follows a statement by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, on September 18, 2024. He explained that the “decision to terminate the mining leases was made after reviewing various reports from the Minerals Commission, consulting a Ministerial Committee on the company’s operations, and engaging extensively with all relevant stakeholders.”

The acquisition of the mines by Blue Gold came after Future Global Resources (FGR) encountered significant operational difficulties, leading to a decline in performance since 2017 and accumulating over $200 million in losses, primarily owed to local suppliers, government agencies, and its employees.

FGR previously held a 90% stake in the project, with the Government of Ghana owning the remaining 10%.

The Bogoso-Prestea mine boasts a storied history since 1912 and has produced over 9 million ounces of gold.

BoG intensifies effort to combat financial fraud

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has intensified monitoring mechanisms within the financial sector to curb the rising number of fraud cases.

This follows the release of its latest annual Fraud Report, which revealed that the number of staff involved in fraudulent activities in banks and Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs) jumped from 188 in 2022 to 274 in 2023, reflecting a 46 percent increase.

Additionally, the financial losses due to fraud climbed by 7 percent, reaching 88 million cedis over the same period.

In an interview with Joy Business, the Deputy Director of the Financial Stability Department at the BoG, Dr. John Dadzie, mentioned that strategies have been set in place to require banks to provide a detailed plan to address the issue.

“The Bank of Ghana is concerned about fraud prevention across all banks. We do not differentiate between institutions with higher or lower fraud rates. Upon releasing our reports, we write to all banks to submit strategies outlining their plans to minimize fraud incidence and related losses”, he said.

Dr. Dadzie stated that the aim of the BoG is reduce fraud in the financial sector to the lowest level to discourage staff and the public from being enticed to engage in fraudulent acts.

He added that it is the wish of the bank to stop from fraudulent activities from occurring in the first place.

“Fraud is fraud and from the regulators point of view, we are looking at not having fraud situations at all. Even if a bank has one or two incidences of fraud, the impact could be very significant”, he pointed out.

Declining to mention specific names of banks involved, Dr. Dadzie said the mandate of the central bank is to put in measures that will prescribe punitive actions for anybody involved in fraud in the financial sector.

“The Bank of Ghana is very much concerned not just in terms of who has more or less. Fraudulent activities are unacceptable, and from a regulator point of view, we aim to eliminate such occurrences entirely. Even isolated incidents of fraud can have significant consequences for banks”.

  • GRA urged to tackle smuggling of canned and PET bottled beverages into Ghana

GRA urged to tackle smuggling of canned and PET bottled beverages into Ghana

The American Chamber of Commerce and the Spain-Ghana Chamber of Commerce are calling on the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to urgently address the smuggling of canned and PET soft drinks into Ghana from neighboring countries.

Both chambers argue that this illegal activity jeopardizes the survival of legitimate beverage producers and erodes government revenue from taxes.

In a joint statement, they highlighted that some of these smuggled beverages are sold without tax stamps and at prices well below market rates, making them accessible primarily to those avoiding customs duties, excise taxes, and other levies.

They also expressed concerns about the potential health and safety risks these smuggled products pose to consumers.

“The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) cannot verify the quality of these beverages, as they bypass established health regulatory processes. Authorised dealers and franchisees suffer reputational damage when inferior products are passed off as their own in the market”.

“We urgently call upon the GRA to take decisive action to halt the smuggling of these PET and canned beverages, particularly Coca-Cola products, which are among the most affected. We also urge the FDA, local authorities, and market leaders in major regions such as Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi to act decisively to protect these brands, preserve government revenue, and safeguard employment opportunities within the beverage sector”, they stated.

“Additionally, we entreat the Ministry of Trade and Industry, through the Ghana International Trade Commission (GITC), to address these unfair trade practices. This action is essential to encourage investment in Ghana’s manufacturing sector and ensure a level playing field for all businesses operating within the country”, they opined.

They emphasized that beverage smuggling into Ghana weakens legitimate businesses, diminishes government tax income, and presents potential dangers to public health and safety.

They urged all relevant parties to work together in addressing and resolving this issue efficiently.
